and with a list of 25 or more charities then start to research each one which one that they feel is speaks to them by examining specific needs sharing personal connections or stories and breaking down financial stats they produce powerful informative presentations through their determination and hard work 25 becomes a final number of three or four through student voting last school year almost 65 percent of students chose to plan organize and create various fundraisers helping multiple charities and non-profits in our neighborhood as well as the broader community nearly 100 percent of our families and students attended events donated and supported our causes there was a fall carnival fundraiser for the virginia paws for pitts rescue scavenger hunts and social and socials involving students helped raise funds for the ronald mcdonald house including an entire dinner prepared
for our students prepared by our students for their residents raffle gift baskets were a huge hit supporting various causes a winter wonderland festival was held as a food and winter coat drive for school families but also open to the community on saturdays no questions asked everyone was invited to come take whatever they needed we held a valentine's day event for the american heart association we co-sponsored an end of the year block party with our student equity team for the community students personally contacted area businesses and service organizations like the health department that are offered covert vaccines and valuable health information the rescue squad sheriff and police departments fire department the local masons lodge the buffalo the buffalo soldiers and many others the carnival-like atmosphere brought the students the neighborhood and these organizations together in a
fun unique way this year the students are already busy planning events that will help the local boys and girls club and caring for creatures they are working to make the food winter coat drive an annual event and the list is still growing i can't wait to see what our amazing young people do next thank you for your support thank you for those comments i guess we'll save questions to the end or you guys want to break up questions save questions to then you want to do them right yo we've got so many questions get ready we'll go ahead and break it up um are there any questions so do you get to play with the animals and caring for creatures um we're hoping so last year virginia paws for pitts brought out these fabulous dogs
and the kids just fell in love so hopefully we will maybe i missed it but uh the lab school has all different ages of kids um which students do this this work or this well dude this we started this last year and we started on a middle school level so it's grades six through eight did all of this last year we are now trying to move it into the into the upper grades and to the high school which is a little different but we're hoping to carry the same enthusiasm to the higher grades thank you thank you if you would like to come around we can shake hands or do whatever you're comfortable with i think that'd be great oh okay okay thank you oh i did it again i believe we have one additional
presentation i heard socks mentioned i'm very curious i can't even find two matching ones in my own house hi i'm lily i'm a senior at monticello high school my sister and i uh started civil society in 2016. my dentist office was looking for donations and one of the items on the list was socks we saw that that was being overlooked so we decided to donate that the next year we donated socks again this time to uva we did that to uva children's hospital we did that for a few years before expanding and six it since expanding we've donated over seven thousand pairs uh and 4 000 pairs last year we've donated to places like richmond children's hospital the boys and girls club at both cherry avenue and southwood and the salvation army this year we
are looking to donate more stocks to more places right now we get donations through donation boxes at businesses some of the businesses from last year include ragged mountain kindness cafe and athleta we also take donations through our website which directs people to ronald mcdonald which is our fiscal sponsor and those are how the donations are funneled through and this year i'm looking to expand [Music] even more donate more socks and involve my school as an officer of multiple honor societies and clubs i'm planning to use hours as an incentive to donate [Music] that is incredibly impressive um and was a joy to listen to do we have questions for lilly how do you connect with the different organizations you give the socks to [Music] so we just reach out to the organizations uh we find
um whatever person is best based on their role like best fit to communicate with uh for instance when we started with the ronald mcdonald house we've reached out to the person who was in charge of organizing their events and opportunities thank you lily if you have the opportunity to see some of the people who receive your socks i can imagine that's a very heartwarming feeling can you tell us a little bit about that yep so i haven't been able to see it as much the past few years because of covid but just recently a couple weeks ago we donated some socks to the haven and as we were bringing them in it was just nice to see everyone's reaction and how happy they were to get socks as socks are the most needed item in
homeless shelters thank you if someone wanted to make a donation where would they go when this should be on the record and on the website so our website uh walks people through how to donate we it's actually through ronald mcdonald what's the website um so our website is civilsau socklub.org and then ron mcdonald house of charlottesville for online donations you just in the comments section of making a donation you write our organization so if the daily progress wanted to put down your website what would it be sevillesockglove.org seavillesocklove.org yes okay it's also a great shirt so i might have been to the website but i imagine it's done well it's great branding with these little hearts made out of socks um thank you so much for that presentation we really appreciate it we'd love if
you come around and shake our hands or whatever you're comfortable with [Music] so how many years have you been doing this wow great job i think that's cute yeah it's a stock queen ms armand that concludes our spotlight on education right [Applause] next up on our agenda is 5.2 announcements um we have two coming from the superintendent we have one coming from the school board i'm going to start with this school board if you're ready to say cup oh you're going to do it that's great oh it's going to do it fight it out and fight i win you win this is national suicide prevention month september is suicide prevention awareness month across the country the national alliance on mental health is highlighting together for mental health a campaign that brings caregivers together to advocate

and he's headed out but with from the lab school jen underwood here is here tonight who's principal at merrier weather lewis elementary school and amy morris for broadest wood elementary school i think i got everybody right okay and then the other announcement that i have is that our next school that will be conducting the name review committee for will be meriwether lewis we've already had a meeting with the staff and there's been a chair appointed and we're moving forward with that with committee work but there will be a press release going out tomorrow so i wanted to give the board a heads up thank you thank you for those announcements and thank you mr irani for standing out in the rain today um directing all the traffic mr irani did anyone who owed a ticket
for parking inappropriately pay that ticket okay um thank you all for being here we do we do appreciate it it's always nice to see familiar faces as well the next item is public comment 7.1 ms lee will be leading us on that thank you thank you the school board invites and actively seeks the public's input in the matters relevant to school board governance and provides for time during its business meetings to hear from albemarle county residents and community members during public comment we expect respectful and on-topic comments the school board wishes to maintain appropriate meeting decorum so that persons can observe and hear the proceedings of the school board and that attendees online are not subject to inappropriate language and conduct members of the public wishing to provide public comment during the school board meeting
may sign up online at www.k12albemarl.org board by 3 30 pm the day of the meeting the clerk will email zoom links to the speakers on the day of the meeting so that they can log into the meeting to provide comment tonight we do have two zoom speakers and i would like to urge you to turn off your live feed as there is a delay and just go through the zoom link before public comment commences i will announce the order in which the speakers will comment speakers will have three minutes to make their comments and they will be notified here by the light system speakers during the meeting or those submitting written comments should state name and address or magisterial district further speakers should limit comments to those matters that are relevant to the school board
governance or the operations of the school division although the school board will not respond to comments made during public comment school board members may address comments at the end of the meeting agenda under other business tonight we have five speakers i'll go ahead and announce them all right now so you have a sense of the list we have liz koenig or koenig sorry tyler gifford maggie morris katie morgans and heidi gilman bennett so first will be liz good evening my name is liz koenig i serve as the secretary of the apple moral education association and i teach at woodbrook elementary school on may 12th this board directed the division to look at alternatives to collective bargaining over the summer a steering committee of a few dozen employees met five times to discuss alternative models i
was a part of that committee on august 11th a presentation was made to this board on what was discussed which in my opinion did not accurately reflect on what had been decided by the committee because we had reached consensus on very little on september 8th we still have no mechanism for employee voice no path forward and no communication from the division to the steering committee since august 2nd your directive on may 11th was to explore meaningful meet and confer options and other alternatives to the collective bargaining resolution which was backed by over 1400 employees in this division it is now clear that the alternatives on the table are no substitute for a robust collective bargaining resolution in fact during the steering committee's work the division offered two possible models for acps to follow here one
was a document from a human resources team in canada for using interest-based negotiations during collective bargaining between the union and the company the premise was setting up a successful bargaining process between two equal part partners in negotiating in other words what we presented to you in our collective bargaining resolution the other model shared with us was a collaborative employee process from arlington public schools how did using that model go for arlington on may 26 2022 the arlington school board passed a collective bargaining resolution giving bargaining rights to its employees even with the employee voice mechanism held up as a model for us to follow school staff in arlington still requested and were granted their labor rights under a collective bargaining model i am including these documents with a copy of my written statement and an
email to the board this evening it's clear from this work clear from the very own resources relied upon by this division that collective bargaining is the way forward we have already wasted precious time thousands of dollars of resources paying the employees involved in the steering committee not to mention the thousands more dollars to pay employees and substitutes to enable participation in the future committee this misguided effort is also taking valuable time and attention from division employees which is unsustainable in response to the query of a member of the steering committee about the lack of communication since august the division admitted that the work had stalled because they were overwhelmed with the demands of a busy back to school season all of these resources both money and time could have gone towards setting up a collective
bargaining structure in response to the wishes of the majority of acps employees and by the way the earlier transportation discussion is related to this too seventy over seventy percent of our transportation workers signed cars asking for collective bargaining that makes a difference because of this board's fear to be among the first in virginia to champion the rights of its school employees and pass a collective bargaining resolution we're now behind we have explored the alternatives they will not suffice now is the time to return to our resolution and work with us and the majority of your employees to pass a collective bargaining resolution that will move the important work of our public school system forward thank you [Music] thank you miss coney next we have tyler gifford who's on zoom [Music] hey good evening i'm a
resident of the samuel miller district and a parent of a first grader at mountain view elementary i'm speaking in regards to the transportation department planning of late bus routing and for all those families impacted that cannot speak out here tonight at mountain view elementary the transportation department has selected the two buses for southwood community to be definitely running on a late pickup and drop-off schedule i've also confirmed with my son's first grade teacher if he were to ride the bus and be an hour late to school then he would miss morning meetings and daily writing morning meetings are an essential time in elementary schools for students to foster relationships with both their teacher and peers missing this daily meeting would be detrimental to their social emotional learning as the board should already be aware the
students from southwood community are low income and are typically learning english as a second language so this decision appears to be widening the equity gap between our low low-income and affluent students i've reached out to habitat for humanity in order to better understand the real impacts to our community and look forward to sharing this information with acps soon i've also reached out to the greater community and discovered the same as the board has earlier in this meeting that other school bus routes appear to cause similar equity issues for low-income communities without the benefit of knowing how these decisions were made from the outside this appears to be discriminatory i do not envy making these decisions however they were actually made i recognize there's no easy way to provide equitable impacts however there's unquestionably more room
for consideration in regards to where the least amount of impact should occur while the community was given less than 18 hours to prior to the first day of school to prepare for the actual routes with bus driver shortages the transportation department has had the last two years of experience to better prepare engage and communicate a more equitable plan for example if asked some of my neighbors in redfields oak hill farms mosby mountain and whittington communities have more work flexibility and would volunteer to drive our students to school in order to provide on-time busing for those students families who are most impacted and least flexible from correspondence with the transportation director miss white and speaking with the director of equity ms kaiser i was told student density and efficiency of bus routes were prioritized without regard
for equity dr kaiser recognized the current routing is not equitable i'd like to remind everyone on the strategic plan that was approved by the school board on july 8 which states the values of acps are equity excellence family community and wellness so together the school board the superintendent and the transportation department take primary responsibility for ensuring that albemarle county public schools is an effective and equitable school system so i ask you the school board who is clearly aware of this equity issue from your questioning during the transportation update to have the transportation department immediately reconsider bus routes within your own magisterial districts and promise to report back to our community at the next board meeting it's important with the data that was presented earlier the transportation department does not drop riders who have not ridden
yet but would otherwise their buses were on time better communication needs to occur with the community thank you for your consideration and i look forward to following up on this equity issue within our community thank you for your comments mr gifford next we have maggie morris who is also on zoom [Music] hello i'm maggie morris i'm from the samuel miller district i'm a retired albemarle county public school teacher and i'm really disappointed in the way that the transportation was has been provided at the beginning of this school year i understand from an afghani family that i'm working with they have a child at greer a child at journey and a child at albemarle high school they've been late every day both going and coming home the parents have no car they cannot help with transportation
the same is happening at mountain view at burley middle school i have a friend who is now unable to participate in after school activities because it is too late to get home to go to football and also is getting to school late as well my personal experience in the classroom i know that this has a strong long-term impact on our students late arrivals routinely at the beginning of school for our youngest learners in elementary school will not provide them the security of having a strong routine they come in in the middle this is the introduction to their learning this is also shaming this is a reiteration of feeling lesser than for children of low income it needs to change immediately not when the data is ready i notice lily's compassion and i would like to
see the same kind of compassion paid to these students and families who are impacted by this transportation i believe we need an equity audit and the situation needs to change immediately not at the next time that people get together to talk about the data i also believe that these families need an apology this has been unequitable people were told at burley middle school i know that the burden of this transportation impact was going to be shared it has not been shared both in the morning and in the afternoon for our youngest learners at bright stars three-year-olds being hungry and having a longer day like this is really inhumane our goals are to have equity but this is not equitable it is so clearly against the strategic plan these children do not have equal access to
instruction and they don't have equal access to emotional care either i want to thank you very much for your comments um you're over the three minutes thank you very much for your comments okay next we have katie morgan's [Music] hello my name is katie morgans i'm a teacher at mountain view elementary school and i'm also here to talk about the buses we all know there's a bus driver shortage but i just want to give you a picture of what that looks like at mountain view and my concern is really about who is being affected so we have three double backs daily actually and you can see who is left at school every afternoon so i personally did an equity audit and i interviewed my colleagues our student body is about 55 percent students of color
it's about 90 percent of the kids who are affected by these transportation issues there's 41 classrooms from bright stars to fifth grade all but one are affected in some classrooms it's a third or even forty percent of the class that are on those late buses there's students who have switched to car rider for the time being because their parents don't know if their buses will be coming or when they'll be staffed there are students who come in you know maybe the bus is only 20 minutes late so they get there at 8 20 but their class is going to specials at 8 20 so they skip breakfast so they can go with their class to specials i have kids getting picked up early because their parents won't be there when the late bus gets home
in the afternoon so they're missing the afternoon instruction so it is really a big issue equity-wise i am really glad you're getting monthly transportation updates i think that you should be con collecting the demographic data as well i didn't ask my colleagues for this information but you can see you know based on the neighborhoods and the students who are left at school it's a lot of students who come from lower income families it's a lot of students who speak english as a second language and you know these these families are just being um disproportionately impacted there's currently a big racial gap basically who is able to make it to school [Music] we've also had the issue that families were explicitly told that there would be the double backs would be spread out it would be
every other day and that has not happened so like other speakers i encourage an official apology about the inequitable busing practices and also fixing this immediately so that it is spread out among our community and one community doesn't have to shoulder the entire burden thank you [Music] thank you ms morgans and last we have heidi gilman bennett [Music] hello my name is heidi gilman bennett samuel miller district i am here as a parent and community member on international literacy day to sound the alarm about third grade reading albemarle county public schools has taken some very important first steps a commitment to anti-racism training for leaders and teachers and culturally responsive teaching started to implement the science of reading and one year ago dr haas set the goal of all students reading on level by the
end of second grade but i'm very worried about the k3 reading scores both sols and pals and i urge transparency about this data at the september 22nd meeting the uva equity center analysis shows that the acps achievement gaps pre-pandemic were some of the widest in the state so yes the pandemic is exacerbated long-standing gaps but it also exposed a broken system as a lifelong literacy professional it seems to me that the reading instructional system here is deeply flawed and when i say system i mean the structures put in place by district leaders of which teachers have no control such as curriculum assessment staffing and more i urge you to listen to our amazing hard-working reading specialists and teachers to understand what is and is not working i look forward to hearing your action plan both
for fixing the system and for helping the many kids and families who are struggling now [Music] decades of reading research shows that we must intervene early and it also lays out a road map the good news is that other school divisions in virginia are making progress and so can we thank you [Music] thanks ms gilman bennett and thanks to everyone who commented tonight i yield back to you sheriff olson thank you miss leo that concludes public comment we'll be moving on to school division business item 8.1 building services update on our summer 2022 construction ms snotty [Music] all right good evening thank you for having us tonight i'm lindsay snotty director of building services and here with me this evening is matt wortman who is our deputy director for billing services as of april this
year so we're excited to have him on board so we're very very busy this summer you're going to see an amazing video that matt put together with patrick huddleston to highlight some of the projects and gives you some good aerial views of the projects as well but i wanted to also tie this work back to the strategic plan and part of what we're working on is equitable transformative resources within our facilities and it's nice to see facilities in the strategic plan in this iteration and showing that we'll develop sustainable modern facilities infrastructure and equipment and distribute those resources in an equitable manner so you'll see a lot of projects tonight that touch almost every school in our division at different levels so i'm going to move into the video which is more fun than the
slides and you'll see matt's excellent work the deputy director here at building services this video is aimed to just show you a fraction of the projects that our capital team completed this past summer this summer's work included several of our annual maintenance projects for various equipment and components of their facilities as well as the completion of several standalone capital projects the first of which was the completion of the crozet elementary school edition and renovation project over the course of eight weeks at various times more than 130 personnel from nielsen builders were able to complete several of the key components to this project the first of which were our existing classroom renovations work in these areas included cubby reconfigurations new casework and sinks as well as installation of the necessary components for the new geothermal hvac
system this work included installations of the new heat pumps and duct work within the individual classrooms we are excited about this new hvac system the first of its kind in albemarle county public facilities this summer's work also included completion of the new kitchen addition on the north side of the site a new serving line new kitchen equipment and stainless steel panels enable our child nutrition team to provide healthy meals to all of our students on a daily basis as a result of the new kitchen addition we were able to then expand the cafeteria dining area into the space that was previously the old kitchen this also included the ability to add an outdoor dining area on the front side of the school with expanded glass for increased visibility and natural lighting into the space this
summer's work also included an expansion to the front parking lot increasing the parking capabilities at the school by over 50 new spaces lastly this summer's work included completion of the new 30 000 square foot edition on the south side of the property 18 classrooms were built to house the expanded student population of the crozet community flexible furniture was installed in each of the classrooms and two classrooms on each of the three floors were installed with a folding partition to increase the flexible options for teaching staff wide corridors with new wayfinding color schemes will help students and staff navigate throughout the building these were coordinated with a whole building signage package to connect the old with the new and finally the design makes integral connections from the interior to the exterior including with great views of
the mountains to the west work this summer also included several annual maintenance projects at walton middle school we completed the second phase of the roof replacement for that facility over the last several years the entire building has had a new roof installed when completing roof replacement projects we always increase the amount of insulation on our roofs which improves the energy efficiency of all of our facilities behind the school improvements to the water distribution system were also initiated unfortunately due to supply chain delays this project will continue into the fall our construction crew was able to make the necessary interior piping connections but is currently waiting on the new water tank to arrive once installed it will look very similar to the new water tank recently completed and installed at broadswood elementary school walton also had
several bathroom renovations completed this summer this work included new tile flooring new fixtures and new toilet partitions throughout the restrooms this work was also completed at several of the bathrooms at holly mead elementary school this past summer western albemarle high school was another facility where we completed re-roofing operations as part of the annual roof replacement program other work at western this summer included completion of the new ada ramp on the back side of the school allowing students to safely access the bus loading area and providing accessible egress from the facility work on the new western softball field house was also completed this facility offers concessions restrooms and an announcer's booth for clear views for in-game commentary additionally as part of the annual painting and flooring program the softball dugouts were repainted to provide visual consistency
with the new adjacent field house these projects represent just a fraction of the work that building services completed this past summer we will continue to work hard to ensure high quality learning environments are available to all of our students and staff thank you thanks it makes the slides look not as exciting but we'll all try to jazz them up a little bit so a lot of work going on this summer some other things we didn't have video of want to include some pictures we did a large and are continuing to do a large hvac project at elmer high school you'll see the section of the building outline where that project is impacting and it's also the second floor of that same area other hvac projects include included air handler replacements at woodbrook elementary and stony
point and at the henley journey tech lab spaces and each time we do this with the hvc equipment we're installing more efficient equipment and we're also looking to increase our control and ability to bring in more outside air in lieu of cova and for other purposes as well here are some rooms that receive the second grade furniture this is a project that impacted every elementary school all the second grade rooms received the modernizing flexible furniture in their spaces the greer walk-in clear freezer was installed to give the child nutrition staff more capability in that space and for generator installations agner career journey and community lab receive generators next summer we have holly mead scheduled for a generator and after that we just have one school that we still need to do so all schools will
have generators at their locations we use this for typically emergency lighting and emergency systems when power goes down in some spaces we have some ability to run additional equipment for our shelter space if we needed it the career elevator we're working on this it's nearly complete and the renovation was providing updated electrical components again ran into supply chain issues with this project and then painting and flooring updates this is another one that touches almost every school during the summer just different degrees but this is we try to touch everything kind of spread the wealth with the painting and flooring so it jazzes up the spaces a bit signage updates so these have been a big project for us as the school names have changed for some locations we've updated signage throughout some of that even
included at mountain view kale was in the floor in the vct flooring in the cafeteria so some some signage changes are bigger than others but mountain view journey like lakeside and community lab school recently well journey working through the design but the design on the bottom right is nearly complete so we'll have those in production soon [Music] and you may have noticed if you've been to school recently we've completed a lot of sidewalk and paving repairs our all the noted deficiencies in the sidewalks at all schools have been corrected over the summer and that was about 480 that were noted everywhere so we've done that by shaving down so we don't have a tripping hazard in those locations and i know some of you like to hear trailer updates we have taken some away at
scottsville we lost the four classroom pod red hill elementary took the two classroom pod away as a result of the construction projects with the additions and mountain view we've taken away the two classroom pod in the single classroom and brownsville two classroom pod has been removed this is the niffy safe routes to school project that is making a path a sidewalk from elmer high school down to journey there are two separate portions of the project um the portion from journey to albemarle high school is still under construction we fast tracked the portion and added to the one that goes behind albemarle high school to give a path for the community members that doesn't have to cut through the campus so we fast track that project [Music] and then the master plans that we've been working
on not just this summer but before are the lams lane master plan dlr group is our architect on that project developing a phase plan of short-term and long-term recommendations for the future direction of the landslide campus the signage that you saw for journey is part of a larger signage package that came out of this or signage package recommendations for wayfinding and for what that campus looks like to keep it more coherent so that's going to be the first step in that the journey sign will be a prototype for what it looks like across that campus and then the alberon western study quinn evans is doing that work and we've conducted a physical assessment of campuses and we're working on different projects that the architect has come up with to see which ones the community responds
to which ones they think are a priority and we're actually doing a student lunch meeting tomorrow admiral high school to just get feedback from a group of about 10 students and then custodial projects there aren't that many pictures but it's a lot of work if you've ever been to our schools over the summer you'll see how disruptive they look and we have to keep the summer school classrooms in intact and then we tackle the ones that aren't being used but all the floors get redone it's a lot of work especially this year we had to get the rooms back to what they looked like pre-covered and during kova we just had to take out all the collaborative furniture that we were that we worked so hard to get into the schools and now that's all
back but that was a really big effort by a lot of people in our department and in our schools to get that done with a lot of support from administrators to say hey where do you want this what goes what stays how are we going to make this come back together again and i want to also highlight some environmental projects with some contingency funding in the scottsdale and red hill projects for the additions we were able to install a large rate scottsville and a slightly smaller one at red hill elementary so these are only two schools in the appalachian power territory everybody else is in dominion but it was we're really excited to install this and we will have an environmental dashboard coming up soon that will show all this data and we were able
to do the contract work was great and they did some lessons with the with the students at the schools as well around this all right i'm going to have matt wortman come up and do some acknowledgements for us and thank you good evening um we just wanted to take a brief moment to acknowledge the team members that really made this summer's work happen within building services jeff rahm david via kaitlyn wetzel lisa walker sheila hootman pam snyder and stephanie rose these are really all the people behind the scenes that make this stuff happen every summer summer is our busy period um it's when we go into high gear and it's definitely um it's definitely a team effort that can't be done by any one individual i also want to thank patrick huddleston from the communications
team who put together that wonderful video that you saw we also i don't i don't think we could get to play but we had a time lapse video of the cross a edition as it was going up we had a camera um installed we'll certainly share that with the board and put it on the website so the public can see it it's a pretty cool video and then finally i want to acknowledge the local government team that we have worked with for years as far as we can tell local government has has always helped us with our large capital projects and for the last decade or so they have played a very large role in our ongoing annual maintenance projects as well and so the team in fes the facilities planning and construction division comprised
of the chief blake apple now deputy chief tyler gifford and the project managers monty breeden walter harris steve hoffman and their oa our management analyst darius garcia these individuals have been instrumental over the years to our team and we're very thankful for their help and support as albemarle county continues to grow so too much their service level of service and so as you are probably aware as part of this year's annual budget they're included funding for positions within a building services department to expand our own capital team and so starting actually many of them started last week but we will moving forward have our own team of project managers who will spearhead our capital program we believe that this will expand our level of customer service to ensure that we can know every student and
so moving from left to right there on your screen this team will be jamie allen who is a project manager project inspector jamie actually was in building services came up as our previous electrical foreman and so we're really excited to have him on our team kagan squire another project manager project inspector comes to us by way of uva caitlin wetzel who is our management analyst will provide key support to this entire team as we complete our daily work and then finally gerald harris who is a senior project manager who comes to us by way of colorado we're really excited to have this team as i say we feel that it's going to greatly expand our level of service moving forward and of course this is just one small component of the entire building services team
which makes our schools uh function every day the work that these guys do is absolutely incredible everybody from our maintenance crews to the custodial team that keeps our facilities in tip-top shape enables enables each student and staff member to provide a high level of education for our students so thank you very much to the board for your support and we'd be happy to take any questions that you all might have are there any questions from the board i have two um when we do roofing projects like the one at walton are they solar ready or how do we deal with that and the second question will be are you coordinating the signage work for journey with the boys and girls club since they're all going to be right there yes and yes so the signage
we've actually had uh represented from boys and girls club on the committee with us on the design committee so they're on board we're making sure their name is the longest so we have to make sure our widths accommodate their width because our all of our names are shorter so we've been definitely accommodating that i do think it'll be a great signage package i think it's going to do a lot for that campus and we're going to get rid of some of the signs that are just too confusing and putting people just confusing for a visitor coming to our space for the first time we've also worked on colors so people who don't speak english as their first language don't necessarily rely on the words there will be colors that are consistent for each school that
direct them to the different paths the solar piece yes the roots will be solar ready i think we'll be working with the advisory committee for environmental sustainability to figure out what that pathway looks like probably looking at a power purchase agreement that we would use every time we added a roof to a build or replaced a roof on a building thank you sure i don't know this isn't a question it's a statement crozet elementary is gorgeous it's just absolutely gorgeous if any of my colleagues have not made it out there go look because i mean it it's just uh i took my child and she was fairly bitter that she didn't get to attend the new and improved crow's elementary it is it is absolutely gorgeous it's we got very lucky with the contractor we
had in that job and our project manager matt so matt was the project manager for crozet when he worked with local government we stole him from local government he and he actually finished out that project as an employee building services or is finishing it out uh we also should have thanked the staff and the students in the administration at crozet because they have to bear with us a bit as we're figuring out you know the last pieces because it's always a mad rush in the summer especially the project as big as that yeah it's a nice facility there any additional you know i end up saying this every year and uh in terms of being in quite a number of schools so far this school year and over the summer your folks do such a
wonderful job in terms of keeping it clean keeping it polished and the pride that i see in their eyes and you know as we talk about it uh it just is heartwarming thank you i'll pass that along we have a great team i have one question what um happens to the trailers when you remove them it depends on where they came from some release so they would just end the lease they go back to the owner um and then some i'm not sure exactly brown's rules i think everything we removed this summer was the least okay but it's some that are old we might sell back to somebody or figure out who the buyer is on it [Music] i'm very impressed by the videos that's all patrick and that but patrick's amazing that was good
like drone work and stuff i was very impressed um thank you guys so much for that presentation no further questions thank you for your time and your support next on our agenda is 8.2 which is our school year enrollment update and i believe ms schmidt will be presenting for that i hope you have a video [Music] i know i expect now they had a video so yeah i do not have a video i have handouts you have handouts in front of you good evening tonight i am presenting the our enrollment on the 10th day of school which was yesterday september 7th our more official enrollment uh benchmarks are september 30th and march 30th that's what we use to report to the state budgeting purposes and enrollment projections but the tenth day is a good check-in
point um i have this the two pdfs up here but i know it's hard to see so we gave you two handouts uh the first is an overall summary by school and then the other is by school and grade so let's start with the overall summary which has the blue and the green and the orange to orient you the first column of numbers is the enrollment as of yesterday these are k k through 12 and do not include pre-k students the green column is what we had projected and you can see the comparison of actual versus projection and then the orange column is the enrollment from last year and the comparison so as you review this data there are a couple figures i want to point out we've talked a lot about the crozet edition
uh coupled with the crozet edition was a redistricting of students from brownsville to cross a so that's why you're seeing the big swing in numbers between those two schools our largest increase as compared to last year was at baker butler which added 51 students and admiral high school which added 62 students you will see our middle schools did see a decrease some of that was anticipated as the outgoing eighth grade class was larger than the incoming fifth grade class but two or three of the schools did not meet their projection and then overall while we did not meet our projection we did increase by 125 students as compared to last year so then the second document which is the teal one up here this details the 10-day enrollment by grade level and this document does
include pre-k because i know there was a question around pre-k last time on this document i want to call your attention to the kindergarten figure as you know that is one of the hardest ones to predict so we are very encouraged that we were fairly close on that so the accuracy is encouraging but also the size of that kindergarten because that's a cohort that will obviously progress through the year so that's encouraging as far as future years because we will be seeing some decrease in birth rate so kindergarten will be interesting to go forward are there any questions just as a curiosity i did finally curious that third and is it 11th and no 10th and 11th um were increased is is there a reason for that do you know a reason for that they
um so the the um when you say increase that's an increase that's a variance in that what we projected i would have to go back to see if they actually increased or not good job are there any questions from the board i thought it was really good i just wish there had been a video next year just one question as i recall when we had the dip in enrollment the covid dip it was about two-thirds of that dip was in elementary school two-thirds of an elementary school and about half of that was kindergartners and i do see that our second graders now are the low number in that so we didn't get all those kindergartners back correct so that second grade class they were kindergartners the not the year it closed but the first full
year of coving right [Music] are there any further questions thank you for that presentation [Music] the next item on our agenda is item 8.3 the family life education review and update i think we have a variety of presenters for this good evening i'm debbie collins deputy superintendent tonight we are bringing our family life curriculum for your review this curriculum has both changes in content and in process the delivery system according to school board policy igah you are to review and approve any changes in family life curriculum tonight ms katina dudley will discuss our process for review and our recommendations for changes in the acps family life curriculum miss dudley thank you miss collins good evening and thank you for your time this evening i want to put in front of you some information based on
a review team considerations for the year so each school division is required to appoint a community involvement team to assist in the development of the program and to promote community involvement regarding family life education the board of education guidelines were written to assure that parents have opportunities to review the family life education program annually and to adopt their children out of all or part of the program so during the 21-22 school year the family life education review team met on april 25th participants included families students family life educators school nurses division leaders and school leaders this team met via zoom to provide feedback and input regarding the standard structures and procedures including the family life education curriculum prior to meeting on april 25th each committee participant received a copy of the family life education curriculum
for albemarle county they received access to the virginia department of education family life curriculum and they received a copy of the albemarle county opt-out form and they were all asked to review those documents in preparation for our meeting on the 25th so like everything we do this work is tied to our mission and vision statements you are familiar with our mission and our vision these statements emphasize that we work together to create lifelong contributors and learners in a dynamic and diverse society in the fall of 2021 we implemented our strategic plan which included three goals thriving students affirming and empowering communities and equitable transformative resources goal one facilitates networks of care for all of our students in order to ensure that each student is supported to do their best strategy one within the first objective
which is included on this slide includes the development of a curriculum which incorporates competencies and portrait of a learner i just wanted to highlight three of those adaptability empathy social justice and inclusion in order to affirm the identities and experiences our students bring to the classroom we as a division are committed to developing learning environments that respect and champion the diversity of life experiences that support the physical and mental health of our students the family life recommendations that i put in front of you tonight are aligned to these goals and our strategic plan so i have three recommendations tonight based on our conversation and ongoing conversations that have been had throughout the year recommendation one is that we revise the family life objectives goals and standards essentially what you will see in these standards so
first of all in front of you i gave you two documents one is an opt-out form that's the three pages the other is the document that includes all of our standards from k through 10th grade so family life is taught k through 10. so there are appendices attached to this slide deck and the appendices actually show you the tracked changes so you could go and see what those track changes are so what you have in front of you are our draft of the recommendations that are being made here so with these recommendations to revise the family life objective goals and standards the first is that we update the goals to include the most recent language from the virginia department of education that we also update the goals and the standards to include content that was
previously approved and policies that have been put before you for the last two years so there's been various policies that have been updated over the past couple of years that have come from the state and we just wanted to make sure that all of our standards were updated to be aligned to those policies and then there was a statement about the values from elmar county and that was a really old mission and vision statement so we completely removed that statement and then in the school board statement that you see at the top of those goal standards we just included a statement about the school board supporting the mission and the vision of almar county schools so that as that mission and vision statement changes it doesn't have to necessarily be changed on this document sorry
and then the third revision came from a recommendation that standard 9.7 be aligned to the state standard 9.3 and so you'll see a revision in standard 9.7 and there was another change where it was just a language piece that was incorrect and so we updated the terminology there to be more correct and aligned to the standards as well so that's recommendation number one recommendation number two is that we combine genders for instruction and family life education in grades six through health two family life is currently instructed in a gender separate classroom environment with boys in one classroom and girls in another classroom and that occurs in grades 4 through health 2. so our recommendation would be that all students receiving instruction together without separating based on gender in grade 6 through health 2. i just
wanted to highlight what happens in grades four and five in grades four and five they are separated for family life instruction for one day there's various content that they're taught on those days that's highlighted but one thing that we also wanted to recommend is that in grades four and five all materials will be presented to all students so if they are continue to be separated for that one day that they will all be presented with the same material families and students will have a choice in the composition of the peer group to which they learn alongside and those choices have been updated and listed on the opt-out forms that are in front of you and so that would be for grades four and five and our final recommendation would be that we revised the opt
out form the first three revisions to the opt-out form just are aligned to the revisions that we have on our standards and our goals the fourth revision would be to remove the goals for students in special education classes was we weren't really clear why that was on their teachers follow ieps and plans for students and special ed courses in all of our classes and we don't necessarily include that language on all of our curriculum documents because that's just something that teachers receive in their classrooms and all teachers including family life educators would follow those same iep guides and then in grades four and five in addition to allowing students to opt out of the full curriculum or part of the curriculum we would like to recommend that families be able to choose the learning environment
for which their student participates in family life education and so you will see that there are some options for families to check as far as the learning environment that their students participate in and those three recommendations were my my student would participate with all girls or all females my student would participate with all males my student would be in a gender combined environment or i would like to have a conversation with my teacher regarding this information [Music] just some updates on communication on august 19th when teachers returned we pulled in all of our family life educators k through 12 or k-10 we put these recommendations that we're putting in front of you tonight in front of all of our educators that particular day we also have a letter that will be shared with our community
that will go out tomorrow that will give this families access to this presentation and some other information that they'll be aware of and know what to expect every year in family life education family life educators send out two forms of information to families the first form of information goes out in the fall it's the opt-out form that you have in front of you so families receive that in the fall and then two weeks prior to teaching the anatomy portion of the family life education teachers are also asked to send that form home again the last slide includes all of the appendices so you'll see the documents that you have in front of you but then you'll also have access to the tracked changes that are being recommended as well that's all i have to recommend
for tonight are there any questions for miss dudley is there a reason that six through the upper grades couldn't we couldn't have an option to have gender specific classes in addition to having the option of having combined classes that is certainly an option we don't know we were we really that was one of the considerations especially for middle school i just we were also thinking about staffing and how those would be taught because you're teaching male female and then you'd also have an option for combined gender so these are these are the recommendations that we're putting in front of you are based on the feedback that we've received it's also based on lots of research that has been read and we certainly can consider options but this is just the recommendation based on the feedback
that we got from the committee and the research that we have received miss suddenly i hate to confess my ignorance but i will who are our family life teachers i mean what kind of how is that staffed i don't i don't know it's mainly our health and pe teachers okay k through 12 through k-10 and ms dudley just as a reminder when during the semesters are these taught uh is it throughout or is it later in the most most of our schools teach family life education in the spring we do have in high school that family life is taught to ninth grade and this fall into tenth grade and the spring tenth grade teaches or i might have that backwards but because of driver's education and 10th grade health they flip it so that they
can get the driver's education taught to the student so that they can be prepared for their driver education courses thank you there any additional questions i guess i would say for people um listening because i know we've gotten feedback on this in the past we are not voting on this tonight this is for information there are two additional weeks during which people can provide comments via email i know we've gotten some via email and i guess i did have a question for you miss dudley is the presentation and those dependencies and links is that available to the public if they go to the publicly facing electronic school board or it's just us no these are available to the public we've actually had the public in this slide deck all day and yesterday the letter that
we are sending out tomorrow has a link to the presentation it also gives that information that you just shared that the board received these recommendations tonight and in two weeks the board will be making a decision based on these recommendations okay great while hearing no further questions i believe that concludes our school division business thank you so much for the presentation and the time that you spent putting it together thank you thanks for your time this brings us to 9.0 other business is there other business by any board member or the superintendent i just i'd just like to mention the fact that the denver broncos are playing russian wilson lacking seahawks on monday night and anybody wants to give condolences to mr alcaro they should probably go ahead and do that other serious business [Music]
um i guess i would just say real quick i i'm not going to take forever but the transportation piece is obviously still very concerning you know the letters are racking up the experiences i think we've heard from a variety of constituents i think we've heard compelling information and i would just echo that the more immediate changes we can make the better we've and i hope you can move heaven and earth to get southwood served because that's a whole bunch of people over there that's all for me um with that i believe we have no closed meeting i will call this meeting adjourned good job co-chair you don't want you should get
