001[Applause] foreign so Miss rebel Murphy is our teacher of the year [Applause] um Rebel began her career in East Whittier as a substitute in uh 97-98 school year and then you were offered a contract already by January of 98 to be a kindergarten teacher at Orchard Dale and she loved orchardell so much that she never left and she has been there ever since um she's taught second grade she's taught third grade kindergarten anything else that's it okay that's enough Rebel is a teacher who always goes above and beyond in everything she does even in her last year she is continuing to learn and bring new strategies and knowledge to her third graders Rebel has created a classroom learning environment that engages and helps meet the needs of all of her students she brings in all

002of her vast experience and cultivates creative critical thinking Minds she's an example of a lifelong learner continuing to improve her craft as she sprinkles in all of the Fantastic strategies that keep her students chanting singing writing and reading I do love going in her class Rebel also serves on our instructional leadership team and our Safety Committee ready to support our academics and keep our students and staff safe she was dedicated to the School Musical over the years which allows her to support our students by exposing them to the Arts through music and drama she always devoted her time to make the play a huge success as a colleague Rebel is always helpful encouraging and supportive she connects with people asks how they're doing and is always ready with kind words and encouragement Rebel will be

003retiring at the end of this school year and she will be profoundly missed she has been a Cornerstone at Orchard Dale um I'm one of the people she encourages all the time so I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated teacher thank you foreign [Applause] started 25 years ago in Orchard Dale has been my second home and I always wanted to be a teacher but in the 70s there were no positions so all the counselors all principals said don't even think about it so I got into this a lot later and I'm gonna tell you what it's like to be a teacher I'm going to explain my worst day and my best day it was the same day I had a very challenging student and that particular day

004he was winning and it's one of those days where you even question anything you're doing everything you're doing and so at the end of the day we had a staff meeting and the secretary came in and pulled me out of the meeting because the young man was there to see me and I didn't recognize him at first and he said I came to thank you and I said I'm sorry what and he said years ago you taught me in third grade and I really struggled academically and you worked with me on a project on Saturn and he says I just want to let you know I just got my approval to join the jet propulsion lab wow in Pasadena that's what it means to be a teacher your worst days and your best days I

005want to thank all the principals I've had over the last one last year there's been many um I took I teased Diane how she was the one who hired me and I said you did everything you could that first year that you threw everything at me to quit we had an earthquake we had floods I had to go on an ambulance with a student we had a lockdown I mean everything she said yeah I just couldn't get rid of you so I was there to stay I want to thank all the principals all the support staff the AIDS all my co-teachers and um especially my family it's been a great career and I'll miss it but I want to thank also the parents for trusting me with your children and thank the students for teaching

006me so much thank you [Applause] [Music] Miss McKay before you go Mr zaryatis can you explain to people who might be listening or how are we going to get the information out that there's a new link so if they go to YouTube Channel can we send a district-wide email right now and informing people of that that's the only but you people wouldn't be able to hear it if we said it because they wouldn't be on their link and then is it also on the district website now too it's always been on the district website but is it is that link working at the moment yeah yeah okay so so if people were to go on to YouTube right now they would be able to click on that link and that link would work yeah and

007then can we send can we send out a district-wide all staff email right now and informing people that that link is now active thank you sorry Miss McCain all right I didn't write a speech for this part um so I'm gonna right okay so actually I Orchard Dale this is my seventh year now at Orchard Dell I I love this place I I really do everything we do is is amazing and this year it's even better because now we're out of covid pretty much and and we're being able to do a lot of the wonderful things that we were able to do in the past and it has really made a huge difference on everything that we're doing at school it really has um we have our our Harvest our fall festival I keep saying

008Harvest is Fall Festival on on Friday this Friday I hope to see you guys there it would be amazing we're going to have a great time apparently there's a petting zoo so so come on by like come and join in all of the fun because everything we were doing this year is just we've just been trying to bring back all of the community all of our families and just doing some really really great things um we've been having these great coffee with the principals we've brought in officer Salazar from the CHP and he came and talked to them at our last one by the way he's a parent at my school so he's going to be doing a lot for me if he's he's told me um Chloe was saying the fifth grade is doing

009all these different fundraisers to raise money they did a a lemonade stand one day they had a great time and let me tell you we got our our wild cats are always lined up all the way around the place so we we always bring in all of the best and one of the best things I love about our school is our PBIS we're a silver Award winner um Roar every single morning um get ourselves ready for the for the day um I have my Safari guides that are right there to be open-hearted and helpful and and they they walk our Littles to their classes anybody who needs help they're right there this morning there was a bunch of pumpkins for second grade and they were carrying the pumpkins over for the second graders so they're

010they're always just there to be very helpful I I feel like our school is just such a a kind kind place to be um and then in the center there in the green we have a a new stem lab that we've kind of started with um Dr Swanson from Whittier College has come and she has helped us a lot and then Chris Mendoza has also been working with her and we've got some really great uh things that we've been doing with our with our students from preschool all the way through fifth grade so it's really really a wonderful place to be so thank you I I do want to congratulate our um teacher of the year Rebel Murphy and our sort of a classified employer of the years with Lima Corona and I know our

011board will want to congratulate them too as we move into board reports and comments uh Mrs scareda would you like to share first sure I want to know so congratulations on arshadel great job Parker and Chloe um he looked a great job sky's the limit you know you know I like to say reach for the moon you'll end up at a star um or you just might get to the moon you never know congratulations to uh the teachers Miss Corona Ms Murphy you'll be missed um I think all the behavior are leaving if I if I heard correctly if I didn't I apologize it was a little bit difficult to listen uh much love to miss Corona who is um Jose and she's taking that extra step I did attend a piece online seminars um

012as a lifelong learner I tend to do these things outside the board uh one of them was the diversity equity and inclusion which is a Dei professional development I met a lot of great people along the way that I think will be able to bring a lot of great information to the district um also I attended one on microaggressions on how we still apply them unconsciously highly recommended this would be great book which I thought oh I'm I'm going to get it because I I maybe I do them and I don't even realize it isn't my progressions you know for good people but we don't need to be so I have those microaggressions or apply them in their classroom and also bringing gender awareness um at all age groups so those are things that that

013um that I I did this past I guess a couple of weeks I've been really busy with meetings uh I do want to say that I I don't know if the teachers are protesting out there today um because I I couldn't be there I tried to be there Mr Patterson knows that I tried to be there I I'm one of those people that uh I'm gonna I'm in a really tough place and I really don't like not being able to be there when things like this occur but we preach to all of our students to stay kind and I asked I asked the ball of you to say kind and let's lead by example because that's what we teach our students that's why we became educators we became educators to pay it forward you just

014keep that in mind that's my report thank you Mrs Carrera Mr sanabre would you like to share this evening um yes I would like to congratulate everyone that has been recognized today I also want to say that I uh I had the opportunity to attend the Dia de los Muertos um in which I was able to represent East Rio city school district City school district and I got to meet many people including congresswoman Linda Sanchez I also attended Evergreen Elementary's Harvest Festival where I'm I and my brother we were able to start our little business selling glow-in-the-dark um items I also want to say thank you to me tell them the name of the company oh wow it was clever oh yes um my me and my brother came up with it uh uh globros

015because it was with us working together what was the name again what was the name again I wanted to say thank you to Miss Kennedy and Miss dad for coming um I also wanted to say thank you for everyone that I want to come and help support Evergreen Elementary thank you thank you Cincinnati [Applause] um congratulations to our orchardelle staff it's always proud again I can say this every time to see a outstanding staff being recognized as Murphy and Miss Corona you both will be missed and thank you for the great job you've done at Orchard Dale and Parker and Chloe you know great job I know it's a little nerve-wracking to be on the front but you did it you did a great job and I like the El Presidente shirt um this past

016week I was able to attend a couple of harvests or fall festivals over at La Colima series dressing up and seeing the kids having fun and being more traditional than the drive around Trunk or Treat the last couple years we've done so great job both the schools and looking forward to some that are still happening the uh in the next couple days so looking forward to that and then lastly Halloween's coming up so children and parents please safe trick-or-treating and making sure that all our students return back safely and um ready for school the next day because it is Monday so it's school's Tuesday so be safe out there and um have a great rest of the week thank you um yeah I just want to say thank you to Parker and Chloe thank you

017for leading Us in the pledge and also for being school school leaders in your school so thank you for that um congrats to Mrs Corona and Miss Murphy on being employees of the orchardeo and you know happy retirement um to Miss Murphy and you know good luck Miss Corona and your new adventure um and also last week I was able to attend the ocean view Harvest Festival so miss hunger thank you very much once again you guys always put on a great great showing over there I was able to be a judge for the pumpkin carving contest and once again lots of creativity like you know man those are really really awesome you know pumpkins that you know that we had a judge it was very very hard to be a judge so like I

018said just thank you to the students thank you to PTA for allowing me to be a judge I'm just you know so congrats again on Ocean remix hunger and lastly I was able to attend uh another volleyball and flight football game here at Eastwood middle school and like I said once again I really truly enjoyed it yes I also want to congratulate the uh Miss Corona and Miss Murphy from Orchard Dale congratulations um I did have a chance to go to the spooky concert at Hillview and it was spooky but it was really good the music was great but it it really surprises out there all of a sudden you jumped it was really cool and I did go to series and Evergreen fall festivals and I did see our own Jacob there you know

019what an entrepreneur I mean really look at this agent he's already out there with this business I thought it was great thank you yeah um I also attended the wake up put here which I usually do every month and that's always really good to go to go to and see and I usually see Jacob's dead there oh yes um other than that I think um are we the the Spooktacular is this weekend yeah yeah the so I don't know we have 419 people signed up how many 419 encounters I'll see you all there wow okay that's it thank you I don't think he was just kidding well I also want to Echo the sentiments and the comments from our board I want to congratulate um Mrs Murphy on her time here with us at East

020greater middle school and on her retirement um as someone who also retired from the principal ship some time ago it will be hard to leave but you will find other wonderful things to do and you'll share your gifts and talents in so many other ways so congratulations and to zolemo Corona congratulations on your move going forward I think it's always very exciting to hear when our employees are moving forward and doing other things and and that's that's really really exciting and congratulations to you as well um and I also wanted to share that um it always brings me great joy to see Mrs McKay because she and I serve for a short amount of time at a neighboring district and it was such a pleasure to be able to come and see her as a

021principal at Orchard Dale um when I was the principal at a school and their neighboring District she was I believe in AP and so I'm just so excited to see all the amazing things she's doing at archerdale and how she's growing with that Community that's just so awesome to see um I was able to scoot in for a little bit to Evergreens Harvest Festival and it was really really a great thing to do and unfortunately I got I did get to Laurel but I got there a little too late because our calendar said it was going to be a little later than time actually was but I'm going to make it up by attending um Laurel's Red Ribbon Week we got an invitation all the board to do that and so I hope to be

022able to do that I am also going to attend the East greater Middle School Red Ribbon Week um CHP I think it is um assembly that's going to be held there I'm hoping also as others are here to attend some of the costume parades as possible and then looking forward to the Whittier spectacular I always wanted to participate I have never participated in the past so I'm dragging my husband along and a friend from a neighboring District to do some fun things at this particular and to um walk with now 400 and some of our employees which I think will be very exciting I said walk not run so um thank you everyone so much for being here we're so grateful to have you join us we are now going to take a short break

023oh you're insure now yes oh no no no okay okay that's right okay I just want to make sure I'm skipping skipping okay I'm gonna take a short break um so we can do some um photo ops and so um we're gonna take a five minute break correct yes all right thank you everyone oh I like that we even have the countdown timer like that was awesome thank you [Applause] definitely a test ride [Applause] yeah I know one of the slowbros s is that his product is that what he's making is that what he's selling one why didn't why didn't um did you have any takers for your trunk or treat oh yeah I saw Christine coming by oh y'all are talking about fast did you stop there at the same five minutes we decided

024to warm things up a little bit Yeah and have a timer I hope you're not going to ask me now Norm violation Norm violation if that's not my style I what all right ready everybody that's a good good choice all right we're calling our meeting back to order thank you everybody for joining us once again this evening and as we move forward into this portion of um our meeting the first item for our next area is uh CSEA Commons just before we do that Miss Sandoval and mrano can we get away from coming in the middle away from the door please and ladies can we get away from the door please thank you yes thank you there's plenty of seats in the front too if you want yeah hello um my name is Michelle Ruiz

025I am the past president for csca's chapter 87. um congratulations to our employees from archerdale we really appreciate all of your hard work my son was actually in your class in the Army so yeah oh yeah um CSEA has been negotiating our contract for almost two years and we hope to wrap it up soon it's been a long process we appreciate interest-based bargaining but it can be time consuming so we're hoping to get more dates on the calendar and hopefully wrap this up this school year um CCA has not started negotiation negotiating wages but we have heard about some of the obstacles that are certificated employees are encountering in their negotiations we are hoping this is not a sign of what is to come when we begin negotiating salary increases we do stand here today

026and I know that there are several classified employees in here we stand here today in solidarity with our certificated employees um [Applause] employees work side by side with teachers when working with the students in the classroom there is literally Blood Sweat and Tears occurring by both certificated and classified employees on a daily basis we're coming out of a pandemic in the workload it's at a level that has not been seen in many years if at all teachers and classified employees are working with students that were at home for a very long time these students have been through a lot and the emotional mental and physical stress is affecting everyone including our certificated and classified employees we implore the board members and the administrators to consider increasing salaries that better reflect the hard intents and consistent

027work that is occurring in the classroom in the offices and at every site with classified and certificate employees thank you foreign [Applause] next we'll have comments from ewi hi it's Missy Michelle I am the President of ewi and I'm sick right now so that's my mask but I'm gonna breathe from back here it's not covered I tested everything like that it's I think I got it from an elementary teacher on Thursday making posters yeah it's an elementary cult so um I uh I just wanna say thank you very much to all of our folks who have come out today um we we standing up here me we royally however we want to look at it um since the very beginning we have asked for 13.7 on schedule for everybody this is a c-e-s-w-e-e-a-a work we're

028looking for admin and confidential employees all of us deserve this and um in bargaining because our number doesn't change doesn't mean we're not bargaining it means that's our number and so we are looking at 13.7 percent on salary across the board everybody everybody deserves it it is exactly what you've got on our line item and to offer us a seven on seven off um again is insulting um I had new teachers tell me how demeaning it is this was their second year working in this district and after last year they're like oh my God does this happen all the time evidently every year um the thing is is folks can be angry at Dr Vargas it's not her she's on the bargaining team she's not directed she takes orders from you guys we can be

029angry at Super I shouldn't call you Supermarket we can be angry at superintendent Patterson but you guys are the ones who make those decisions the buck stops with you our book stops with you and so we want you to um please reconsider your offer um I was doing the math because you know that's what I do and um did you know that even with 13.7 percent we're still not going to be as high on the LA County pay scale as our administrators um we won't really go up from where we are we're still going to be ranked about eighth or ninth but that's because everyone around us makes more than us and they all got a big raise to go along with what their District got um we we just want to be treated fairly

030we can I mean the grocery store I heard that your Thanksgiving dinner is supposed to cost more than 500 more this year if you can find a turkey and you know this is this is crazy so I'm hoping that some folks take the opportunity tonight and get an opportunity to speak with you and just share with you that um we respect you more than you're respecting us right now so we ask that you please [Music] [Applause] please consider passing on to your employees exactly what the governor saw fit for us to get based on the rate of inflation and what's going on right now so please thank you [Applause] thank you Miss Michelle we're going to continue with our comments from our superintendent Mr Patterson I want to thank Mrs Murphy for everything that she

031does over at orchardelle as well as Miss Corona but I think we might have to reconsider giving orchardell awards if everybody leaves when they get them um we're looking forward to ctd and TTD day coming up it's always a great opportunity for us to engage in the professional learning across the district to be able to support our students and our staff um really excited Jacob did not mention it but he is going to be leading with me the student advisory Council on November 2nd um that is where the two representatives from each of our 13 student councils come together to meet with me and to Jacob to be able to talk about things that they find important as students in our district and things that they would like to see so that we can continue

032to look for more ways to hear our students voices and the things that um actually impact them um many much mentioned has been uh made of Officer Salazar and his connection to Orchard Dale but we have been able to pry him away from orchardell I believe he a couple of officers were attacked by a dog intentionally intentionally for you you know as part of the presentation to where um the uh and all these are flyover too okay so the presentation from CSEA and that partnership which we've never really enjoyed before is fantastic we're also using that to have some com I mean uh connection with the public information officer from the Whittier PD to be able to talk about ways that we can have a better a closer relationship with WPD as well um and

033then um Mr Gonzalez corrected me um we received 435 um entries but multiple of those entries for Spooktacular are for families so I'm a little nervous to see what that end number is but well over 500 um staff students and parents will be running walking jogging crawling whatever ends up being at this Spooktacular but once again it's another way for us to kind of make sure that ewcsd is closely knit and working well with the city as well and our partners so that's all I have it's beautiful oh one more thing I'm sorry um the city used to pay for crossing guards in the city of Whittier but when everything went um South the city council made the decision to pull the crossing guards that supported our school sites that are in the city of

034Whittier for the next couple of years they've reinstituted 18 of those crossing guard spots we've we've kept them to our general fund but they are now going to relieve us of that obligation which is over two hundred thousand dollars so that's another great great to have the commitment of our of our city and they are also looking to support um creating softball fields at East Whittier so that we then can use some of our elop funds to look at supporting the PE facilities at each of our middle schools and not just East Whittier so we'll replace some of the potholes with some debtor less dead grass itself thank you it's all good it's all good all right so um it is now the part of our um meeting where we will prepare for public comment

035and Mr Patterson is going to put the public comment slide there just a reminder that this is a community meeting this is a board meeting we ask for you to please direct your comments to the board and to use discretion because we do have children in the room that you keep all of your words very professional and very um appropriate and and respectful and we thank you so much for that in advance and now Mr Patterson can you please facilitate um the public comments yes so we do have 11 cards on one topic and we do have one card on a separate topic so per our board policy the 20-minute rule would the board like to have each comment be two minutes in length yes I think so how does everybody feel about this okay

036okay so so everybody has the opportunity to speak we are going to make our three minutes two minutes so I'm gonna ask the first six individuals to please come over to the podium Kevin Canard Kelly Sonata Brent vogelman Angelica palaio Scott marasek and Laura Sullivan please and if you don't do it in that order that's fine it's just we'll start with that Mr Kennard three minutes seems really difficult to do what I have to do in two but I will say before we get started that you know you're getting old when you title your presentation take minutes foreign [Laughter] hello my name is Kev Connor I've been teaching the district for nearly 25 years teaching for me is not just a vocation or a job it's my craft it brings me happiness joy and certainly

037validation the teaching is equal parts hard work planning and love but the love of teaching has been really challenged by the careless and degrading actions of the district school board Administration the callousness of this concern for our well-being both physically and financially is appalling because of this the love of teaching lies bleeding in my hands Morales had an all-time low for everyone at this district teachers office staff ground crews even on-site administrators having having been trudged through the valley of Despair caused by the fear and uncertainty of coven 19. we were directed back into unsafe classrooms under the premise that children wouldn't spread the deadliest virus of the last hundred years or maybe 500 please we all have stories about how that went Contracting covet dealing with worried and sick families someone who've lost loved

038ones um wearing multiple hats to make things work we were asked and we responded we towed the line and serviced our students but that doesn't matter to the administration apparently our fortitude means nothing I am dedicated to my job but this District does not seem dedicated to me at all or to any of us any study on morale and performance will show that when morale is low performance is decimated we are flatly one of the lowest paid districts in Los Angeles even before coal disbursements were made from Glendora to Anaheim Carbon Canyon to the other side of LA we are the most poorly compensated I was shocked to see that at 10 to 15 years for a ba with 45 units we were as much as 15 behind everyone around us we are taking an

0398 000 uh uh about 8 000 difference between us and Fullerton for a 15-year teacher this is flatly wrong we are whopping 11 lower than our surrounding districts for two minutes um [Applause] [Music] [Applause] good evening my name is Scott marousek and I've been teaching this District since 2009. I'm fortunate to have a career where I truly love what I do I love my classroom colleagues and even my admin I love helping to change the trajectory of so many students each year as they head off to high school and Beyond I get the privilege of working with some of the best teachers in my opinion and being able to learn grow and become better at what I do I'm also part of our leadership team at my site I'm also part of the mtss committee

040which is a vision set up by the district that I truly believe is something that we need to effectively put into practice at all our sites I say all this to let you understand that I'm so heavily invested in this district and its vision of where it wants to go that I just wish my district was able to show how invested it was in me I mentioned all the items that I love about my job my career my purpose that now I would like you to mention how much I dislike having to stand here and speak to you guys again I don't want to come off condescending or rude but truly want to speak from my heart I was offended last year when my district offered me one percent when other surrounding districts were getting

041up to seven to eight percent I hated having to come into this room and basically grovel over something that should have been given to us initially I have six family members that teach in surrounding areas and once again their districts are taking care of them without any issues as I'm having to speak up for something I feel that should have been offered to us from the beginning I feel disrespected offended and ultimately very discouraged morale is a very important part of being a good leader and a morale as a whole is very low today there's nothing worse than being unappreciated in your job that you put so much time effort and passion into I've had many conversations with new teachers as missia mentioned with Eastwood here with first and second year teachers and they're asking

042is this how it always goes is this a battle of teachers versus District I wish I could say that it's not always like this but the last couple years have really been trying on this district and its employees California isn't a huge teacher shortage and job postings that once would have doubled applicants can barely come up with a handful of people that are interested in qualified we have so many great Educators in this district and knowing this should motivate the board to truly make them feel like they're appreciated and respected for what they do I wish the board would reconsider the offer and treat us like professionals that we are thank you for your time [Applause] [Music] [Applause] good evening my name is Kelly Sonata and I'm an 8th grade language arts teacher in my

04331st year at Granada Middle School I'm also the author of ewe Budget Bytes I'm happy to sign in [Applause] since the beginning of the school year you've heard individual members of the ewcsd family speak to you about the financial hardships they are facing and I'm sure tonight you will hear more we've just heard two very eloquent speakers I'm going to keep my comments short because you hear from me plenty um the numbers are there the discussion's there we talk about declining enrollment and it is real but I noticed in looking at our Personnel part of the district website we seem to also be in a time of declining employment we currently have 74 job vacancies 66 classified and eight certificated anyone at a site with a vacancy knows what a hardship that is and yet

044we can't get people to take the jobs it's not going to help if they see that they're not going to get compensated they would the way they would in another District I know I've worked with Dr Vargas I know she works very hard to find the very best people for this district and I'm sure it is very frustrating for her that she can't find them please board if you really want this to be the best District around you need to attract the best people you need to keep the best people you need to pay us what was available made available to us thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] my name is Laura Sullivan and I've been with ewcsd for 22 years in my 22 years in this District I've worked for five principals and five superintendents

045when I look at the school boarding cabinet I suspect that when I finally retired that not one of you will still be working at East Whittier I bring up this to I bring this up to point out that the backbone of the school district the backbone of any school district is its teachers we are the continuity of the operation we are dedicated to our students we are the ones that purchase supplies for our classrooms and our students the images you post on Instagram are of teacher-funded classrooms not what is given to us by uh the district or the government the colorful paper the cute teacher pay teacher activities and the classroom Decor are all teachers the US education system is built on teachers unpaid labor and self-funding of our classrooms nothing you are able to

046do as a school board is going to change how our education system works however you are in a position to help your teachers in this school district I've been to enough board meetings over the last 22 years to hear many board members you included um talk about how we need to get more education funding at the state level how we need to get involved for the benefit of all our students well the state of California listened this year and it's sending you a 13.7 percent Cola that will continue the yearly that means funding in every lcap category has increased by 13.7 percent you need to pass that full Cola on to your teachers you can't put students first if you put teachers last I listened to Missy Michelle speak at the last board meeting unfortunately

047the people listening at home were not able to hear her comments however she provided some statistics for you last week our superintendent's salary is number one when compared to other local superintendents our administrator's salaries are number two and number three when compared to other local school districts and our teachers salaries average number nine when compared to other local school districts I will remind you that you can't put students first if you put teachers last right now it is very clear who you value in this district and who you do not foreign [Applause] I've been in the district for 20 years this will be my second decade so thank you for having me uh Mr operation I have your son in my class and he's been a great student so far and I hope I look

048forward to working with him um so you guys are talking about the Harvest fast and those things happen not because of Administrators but because of teachers they're the ones that are putting that together I'm from East Whittier Middle School and Miss Carnahan puts on that Harvest Festival and that haunted house is darn spooky they do a great job but she's the one organizing that she doesn't get paid extra to do that she's getting Miss stampful doesn't it feel you as well so 13.7 doesn't cover what we actually are putting forward in this District but that's what we're asking for and I think we deserve that I'm just going to tell you a quick little anecdote story of mine that happened at the end of last year we had our end of year party at one

049of teachers houses and um rather than celebrating the end of the school year and what we're going to do for the summer um one of our team members on our language arts team was moving on was pretty much moving on to a different job because it was a better opportunity where she was going to get paid more and she had better support and I'm probably not the only teacher in this room that says they've gone through that with the teacher in this District but if we're paying better and we're giving better support we can keep those teachers here we missed that teacher dearly she was an awesome teacher and she's a great asset to the school that she's at but her being here would have been so much better so I'm just here to say

050we deserve 13.7 thank you [Applause] hi my name is Angelica pelayo I'm the El lead at Granado Middle School it's the first time that I've been here um I can tell everyone's super passionate about this I can see why um so I work closely with our El students and their families which is why I feel the need to advocate for our eels and our teachers that support them our El students deserve to have support in all of their classes in order to access the curriculum this means that they need to be supported by qualified staff such as a bilingual Aid however how can all students receive support when we only have one bilingual Aid and 15 classes that require support please consider adding more hours to the bilingual Aid position because no one wants to

051work for only 15 hours a week and trained AIDS leave our district because we are not willing to offer more hours than other districts are if we preach Equity we need to stand by it one last thing don't undervalue us please we are the ones scrambling to provide the support and it's not there [Music] [Applause] Yvonne Harris Natalie Morales Amy Swanson Katie grindsteiner Lydia gotschel and Sandra Sandoval good evening my name is Yvonne Harris and I teach the opportunity classroom for the district for those of you don't know those are the students who have been transferred out of their home middle school for Behavior reasons so I teach a lot of equity with them because they come in and they tell me all the time that it wasn't fair it wasn't fair what happened to

052them and I try to tell them that life is not necessarily Fair but as I look upon my colleagues as I stood outside next to my colleagues holding signs as a huge majority of the community very politely nobody rude um honked and waved and gave us thumbs up the the idea that we should have equity for what we're doing was so blatant I'm not going to talk about what a wonderful teacher I am I'm doing exactly what everybody else is I put in hours that never get paid for I dedicate my time uh talk about a spectacular uh talk about after school sports the end of the year tournament for the entire uh school district and Beyond never got paid for one of those things and I never cared because I always felt that representing

053this District was part of my job part of my heart I went to the East Whittier City School District my kids went to the East Whittier School District I love this District I dedicated this is my 24th year and I've dedicated a lot of time my daughter came home and told me hey Mom we got our raise she is in her sixth year Granite she is a social worker she's not a teacher but she is in her sixth year and she is making commiserate to what I am making in my 24th year and believe me I am so happy for her it's all you want for your kids but I've calculated my time when I'm walking my dog around my block and I have parents and kids honking I have had over 3 500 kids

054of this districts because I have been in this district and I just think I'm deserved I deserve 13.7 percent thank you very much [Applause] [Music] good evening board I want to say thank you to to the board for listening to the concerns I voiced last I voice at the last board meeting I am happy to see that repairs at Laurel and other schools have begun to be made it's a great step towards having equally beautiful facilities that our kids and staff can be proud of so thank you for that tonight I would like to address you from the heart when I started here like a lot of my colleagues here tonight this District was a family a true Community this is why you have a lot of us who are still here having devoted decades

055to this District we felt valued and appreciated this has not been the case the last couple of years now now we feel that we are part of this of a business and we are expendable commodities with the bottom line to me what happened to that Community what happened to that community that continues to be professed about what is not happening in reality take care of your people and don't continue to undervalue us show us that we are worth it thank you [Applause] hi my name is Natalie Morales and I have been an educator in this district for 17 years I am also a mother to three amazing children ages nine seven and five today I'm speaking to you as a mother who has recently become the Sole Provider to our babies we're going to provide

056them a life that they deserve I commute to work and I struggle to pay for gas I have three mouths to feed I have school supplies to continue to continually purchase athletic fees that need to be paid and all of the other things that are needed when providing for children I am a seasoned teacher with a master's degree yet I struggle I am asking you the board to give us the cola that was already supposed to be the help I needed to provide for my babies that is the right thing to do that is what will make us the Educators in your District feel valued and appreciated we show up we show up every single day we show up in our darkest moments we are here for the children that are part of this community

057and now we are asking you to do the same thank you [Music] [Applause] good evening board my name is Katie grinsteiner I am a teacher at Granada Middle School I'm here for all of those teachers who are under 10 years of teaching we've heard a lot from our very seasoned teachers tonight I want to tell you that right now as an educator I can go anywhere and all of my seven years of teaching people are taking our district used to be a district where it attracted the very best the very brightest in fact when I got my first job at East Whittier Middle School I was stoked I had friends my best friend's mom taught at La Colima for 25 years and I couldn't wait to be a part of that family and then I

058got hired at Granada a school that I graduated from as a middle schooler and I was even more excited to be teaching in a classroom that I once learned in to be teaching alongside colleagues that once taught me and now I'm here not so prideful anymore tonight I was proud but not because of my district leadership I was proud because I stood by teachers who had the same interest as me who were fighting with me for money that we deserve we shouldn't have to beg we shouldn't have to grovel for money you already received for us it is your legacy that you leave behind when you are on this board and I would implore you to consider that Legacy as we go back into negotiations give us the 13.7 percent we deserve and then we

059can talk about what we've earned thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Lydia God show again I was here a year ago talking about Cola with everyone and uh guess what you guys did the right thing you gave us the cola so we're here tonight to kind of remind you of a few more things and let you know about a few other things that I've learned in the last year of the numbers of teacher applicants at the universities way down talked with Whittier College asked them how many teacher applicants they have this year you'll be shocked to know the number secondly um in the last six months I've talked to two teachers 30 years of age-ish not not they don't even know each other and they just are telling me Lydia this is the last year we're

060teaching we just can't do it anymore we're just not getting compensated for the hours we're giving the hours we're putting in we just can't make it financially and guess where they're going the tech world they take the brightest you know so we've got a problem coming up it's um you guys are in a position to get East Whittier ready for this tsunami that's coming of lack of teachers okay uh we are definitely not compensated for what we should be the 1938 labor law clumps us with doctors and attorneys we can't get paid overtime so where do our salaries fit within their salaries I could give you stats but I know I'm down to two minutes but you know we don't even come close so again it's that Financial thing that's happening so the cold is

061there position East Whittier in the right position when this tsunami comes because you can tell how many jobs haven't been filled it's coming the tsunami is coming so position this District in the right place because unfortunately the new generation is not going to work for free probably [Music] [Applause] [Music] and I have to say those of us that have been working for free we're fading away [Applause] hello my name is Amy Swanson I am a resident of Whittier I have friends and family that live in all of your constituents districts and voted for many of you campaign for many of you I've been at Hillview Middle School for 19 years I am the fifth generation person in the city of Whittier in my family um in case you were in your meeting and missed us

062outside I can't say anything that anyone all these people already said but what I want to put on the record is that those of us that are here tonight are also representing hundreds of people that could not be here we represent a whole group of teachers that just couldn't be here right now for whatever reason that is so um at the end of the meeting if you missed the 230 people that I counted out there because when we go on field trips we count heads I can't help it um 230 people out there that took the time to say we need this and I wanted to show you all these posters but I won't I'm going to show you the only poster that really matters it says Cola cost of living adjustment we're not asking

063for raises we're not asking for more than what was already given we're asking for what we deserve we went through covid where we couldn't get coveted funding we couldn't get help from the state and all these special things that other people were getting because we were working 20-hour days during the pandemic California has given us a little bit of a payback to say Thank you so please pass that on to us we don't need another training we don't need another categorical fund okay don't need it hang on only out two minutes we are your categorical funding we are the programs because without us all of your trainings mean nothing and I've been here through a lot of them and they've and you're spending millions of dollars I don't know why there is a 30 million

064dollar Reserve I don't know why you're going on a 17 a 13 000 Retreat I would love 13 000 in my summer saver that'd be a dream help us help us [Applause] thank you to everyone for your public comments thank you for sharing your thoughts and for being respectful we greatly appreciate that we are going to continue with our presentation this evening a broad course of study presentation and Dr Oz is going to be sharing that with you tonight thank you [Music] good evening board I'm excited to be able to update you on our broad course of study initiative we know that this initiative is very important and near and dear to our hearts it's a very important priority for our district and has been for many years this broad course of study initiative again

065just demonstrates our district commitment to being able to provide a well-rounded education for our students to be able to support them with developing those 21st century skills as well as perhaps finding Newfound talents as well as exploring variety of interests our broad course of study initiative focuses on three areas art music stem and college and career Explorations we are very proud to be able to let you know that our all of our elementary school students are currently being able to be uh receive instruction in both art and music we are blessed to be able to have the support of four credentialed teachers along with one instructional assistant that supports uh this Initiative for Elementary art and music um this semester all of our students are again receiving our in music you'll see that our students

066in grades K and two are currently receiving music and students in grades three through five are receiving art instruction that instruction began at this at the end of August and will continue until the end of January and then the grades will swap so that by the end of the year again all of our elementary school students will receive instruction in both art and music [Music] in regards to music all of our elementary students are receiving instruction that is um centered on the California Arts standards for music students are learning basic elements of music as as well as our fully engaged as they are singing age-appropriate songs they are developing as musicians um and being able to support them in Reading Writing and Performing simple rhythmic and melodic patterns you will when you visit the classrooms

067you will see lots of movement and energy as our students are responding um to that to music through movement and they are also exploring music of a variety of cultures as well as songs of American heritage in regards to the Elementary art program once again our students are also receiving standards-based instruction that's aligned to the California state Visual Arts content standards art lessons incorporate analytical and reflective on discussions you'll see a variety of academic discourse involved as our students are engaging in academic conversations in relation to Art they're learning about the art making process they're developing their critical thinking skills they're learning about various artists and art history as well as provided opportunities to show self-expression they are also exploring different uses of art tools such as illustration painting 3D construction and sculpture making when

068you see our classrooms you'll also see them really exploring social emotional learning as well and using art and as a as a way to kind of support their problem-solving skills empathy and such here are some beautiful pictures of our amazing students as they are engaging in art take a look at all of those diverse um art projects there again as they are exploring um different aspects of art using oil pastels watercolors creating various types of work you'll see that again all of those works are very unique you will see lots of smiling faces when you visit our classrooms again more beautiful um pictures of our students and their amazing artwork we're really excited at the end of the year our students will have the opportunity to display their art at the Whittier Art Gallery oh

069nice here are some pictures of our students engaged in music instruction so you will see there with Mr Hartman and join him as he is using his guitar there and Mrs pruick as students are singing along um and again engaging in lots of movement throughout music instruction stem is also an important aspect of our broad course of study initiative is it our it is our goal that next year we will open up maker spaces and stem Labs at every Elementary School site so as a result we are preparing for that our superintendent and staff in various areas um ESS maintenance business have been visiting all of our elementary school sites in order to ensure that every room has been designated in in order to ensure that a room has been designated for the Makerspace and

070stem lab and that it is outfitted for exploration and creativity we intend to use these um stem and Makerspace slabs to be able to provide robotics instruction to support students with the computer science and engineering standards foreign area is our college and career Explorations area so this very recently Mr Gonzalez and ESS teamed up to get another thought exchange out there to get the input from our families our students elementary and middle school as well as our Elementary Middle School parents to see where are our students interests as we move forward in thinking about college and career Explorations and those enrichment opportunities we want to provide after school potentially in additional additional time elop funding potentially our summer programs so you can see some of those high-rated responses drama cooking stem robotics music dance foreign

071language engineering computer programming martial arts even gymnastics popped up as areas of interest in our community potentially for opportunities for us to explore through a multitude of funding and potential Community Partnerships that we're so fortunate to have so we'll be really looking at offering those opportunities at various School sites open to students across the district in a variety of ways Saturday programs potentially after school programs maybe even programs over the summer or break times as well she's trying to drag out that one a little bit longer team players so um in thinking through the remainder of the school year we wanted to be sure Mr Patterson our our whole cabinet team have been and extended uh work here extended departments here at the at the district office have really tried to lay out a timeline

072to be sure that we're we're really focused this remains an important Focus an intentional planning for the remainder of the school year so this year we'll continue to implement art in music it's wonderful to see the work of our students every day to see that they're getting these opportunities we've brought these opportunities back that have so long been cut from our school so we're very proud of that we'll continue to implement those rotations throughout this year we'll outfit every classroom this year like um Miss Ramos mentioned for stem labs and maker spaces to open next year we'll plan for our instrument program we know that we really wanted to Launch that this year there's been there's a lot of challenges that that space challenges in addition to looking at our stem Labs we're really looking

073to identify a music room at each one of our elementary sites it's very difficult to move instruments from classroom to classroom like our teachers travel right now our art and music teachers we want to have a place where we can store music instruments tune them keep them safe as well and then also properly clean them and store them so we're looking at that for next year as well and then like we mentioned uh providing those opportunities for college and career Explorations and areas of interest and the second half of the school year in 2324 we're really looking forward to and hopefully to expand our bcos rotations to include hopefully two teams of four so we'll be able to be at school sites more often using additional funding through our um our music and art grant

074that we are going to receive uh be able to offer an art Muse an art teacher a music teacher a PE teacher and a stem teacher to go in and be able to free up hopefully entire grade levels at one time and be there more often so there's more consistent time for with students in each one of those areas that stem teacher would of course be part of that Makerspace in stem lab which would be open to teachers as well to take advantage of when that teacher isn't there but then there's someone there's a real Point person for us who can lead that work at the school site as well and then provide enrich continue to provide enrichment opportunities and identified College and Career areas of interest will continue to seek out more input about

075that from our community and our students and our staff to be sure that we're we're providing our students within with multiple opportunities to explore those areas of Interest and then we hope to get a chance to check out check out our first inside ewcsd Mr Gonzalez has worked with myself and the entire cabinet to identify areas that we would like to focus our staff working so hard on specified projects with our students we chose first to highlight in our broad course of study works we had hope you had a chance to to check out that publication via social media and really this will be something we we produce every couple of weeks that really highlights all the wonderful things that our schools are are doing with our kids and our staff is the programs our

076staff are able to provide with our kids for our kids and that concludes our presentation and the rest of that eat inside ewcsd document so I just wanted to make sure that um I gave credit to um Mrs Ramos our director so apologies that I didn't mention that before so Ward are there any questions that you have regarding the presentation or any um any thoughts yeah I did and thank you for for the great presentation so the elementary the elementary Arts and Music program I don't see the rotation did you did I miss how frequent are they going to every school site every other week okay how much time do they spend in a kidney is it in each class or a grade level each time or is it the whole day for that day

077yeah so so the music teachers see right now they go into every third fourth and fifth grade class or is the opposite right now our K2 they go into K2 right now sorry every K hurt Kinder first and second grade class while the um while the art teachers are in the upper grade classes so they are able to hit every class on that one day that they're there and then they return back two weeks later and so for that first half of the Year they'll get a solid you know one of those experiences and then it'll flip-flop the second half of the year well I'm glad that we're we're projecting that we want to add to it and have the two teams because I definitely feel it's important to have that at the Elementary's and

078especially the music program art as well because the middle schools have their program so it's a nice feeder program for our middle schools but just to be Expo exposure is a lot for students so if they're not exposed to music or all other you know vapa type subjects I think it's important to do that so thank you facility right now or or a contract lineup like will it be like based on FLL robotics or just like a company or you're going to hire that's going to come out we won't have a company that will staff it but we are working with our um our instructional coaches Mr Darren Meyer and Mr Chris Mendoza to identify the appropriate developmentally appropriate tools for us to implement in our stem labs to support a robotics program it will

079look different um at the primary grades versus the upper grades but it will be our own staff who who use those materials um and and teach uh teach our students those skills so everything will be in-house yes for the during the day yes thank you yes Mr sanabi other any questions you have no um anyone else Mr what are you doing um I want to share that um it is a it was a dream for me when I joined the board that we would begin to develop a comprehensive Arts and Music program uh K5 and I say this frequently but I say it because it's true that the research is very clear that when younger children are involved in a comprehensive arts program for those that do choose to go to college they outpace their

080counterparts that were never exposed to music K-5 there's something about the exposure and the integration of the Arts K-5 that makes a bigger difference than even six eight or nine twelve and I think it's absolutely fascinating and I had spoken to someone back in 2019 and this woman that I spoke to she has all the stats and I need to get them to Mr Patterson but I just want to thank you both so much for everything you're doing I want to thank publicly our teachers that are involved in that it is just so powerful to see I was a very young teacher when Prop 13 came and I was teaching at a school in the Montebello Unified School District that had an elementary school band and Orchestra it was incredible and when Proposition 13 came

081and schools were stripped of the monies that were being used to pay for these programs it was devastating we lost the teacher we lost the program we lost all the instruments it just it was devastating so to be able to see this decades later and to be able to look at the kinds of potential things that we as a board can do to do Outreach to look for funding for instruments funding for program goals funding for materials which is something that I know many of us really love doing it just makes me excited to think that there's something that's tangible now that when we go out and we speak the community or we are asked questions that we can say well we have this and we have that so I just want to thank you

082so much for everything you're doing it just um as a as a as a woman who began singing and dancing at three it's a very powerful thing for me I come from a musical fan family and the Arts are just my passion so I just want to thank you again so very much for everything you're doing to promote this and to support it and again to all the teachers that are involved in teaching or working with our students thank you thank you so much thank you all right the next item on our agenda is um an information item and um it says that Dr sevis is going to guide this but perhaps you're going to guide us Mr Patterson on the great adjustment no this is just an information item that Dr Steve is prepared

083there's no presentation involved it's just the number of students and the trajectory of those retentions over years okay I do have just a clarification clarified question for I know I'll say the bulk in 2122 rnk correct what is the typical right now they're all different but what's the typical reason why a student would be retained and echidner is it age or just well we have a quite a rigorous process to retain a student because there has been no evidence really that social promotion I mean that that that retaining the student um has an added benefit so there are very unique circumstances and when you think of the fact that we had you know 800 kindergartners you know seven is not a lot so those are students who have gone through significant student study teams um

084some usually they're on the younger side of the of the um birth date um but really it's just not having that that ability to attend to the task not being able to meet the the criteria to be a successful first grader more significantly than any other student but everything to add doctors I would just say that we really look very closely at maturity just like Mr Patterson said we aren't necessarily looking at academics because when you're in kindergarten you're that's their first exposure many of our kids so if they didn't get what the letter O says on that kindergarten they will get it again in first grade it's really their Readiness and that maturity that they that they that they demonstrate like Mr Patterson said to attend to task their their their emotional uh regulation

085and maybe just that they just need more time they just wouldn't they would we would see that as a benefit that they could use more time to develop those that maturity do these numbers any of them represent and move forward any kids push forward because this is this adjustment forward the 21 the second column is the 2122 number of kids who are accelerated okay so that's the third okay yeah we weigh those both very heavily and really like Mr Patterson said there's no real research out there to demonstrate that it's it's good on either direction you know when we think about parents who really process to skip a grade for example and we understand that that's that's something that might seem really desirable as a first or second but then your your child's the youngest

086to go to college the college you know your child may be the youngest as a freshman in high school and sometimes socially and emotionally that's not the best for the students so we weigh those decisions very heavily like Mr Patterson said SEC processes um there's obviously consultation with our school psychologists and the retention scales that we use also with our teachers thank you thank you any other questions I have a question um I don't think it really pertains to the to this but I know I know we eliminate it the fourth grade scale may I know why you mean fourth grade you're you know right now the grade is like one two three and it used to be one two three four maybe if you were reading at a if the student was reading at

087a higher grade level they would get a four because they were achieving above average the average right so they were at you know right now we have the three which is the cutoff here you're referring to the report card system um I think that's probably putting Dr sevi's a little bit on the spot since she's only been here for seven months so let's can we do some research on that and provide you a comprehensive answer in the board memo sure I just thought you guys would know since you guys were on board because I you guys voted on that I assume that was not a vote that was brought to the board that's that's that's that's that was just something that came up got you okay yeah not a problem okay thank you thank you

088I do want to say I just want to add the comment that I'm really happy to hear Mr Patterson and from Dr Seva said we are not um looking at retention as as a strategy um from the time I was a kindergarten teacher I began to learn about retention and I really had to fight tooth and nail my first great colleagues who wanted me to retain large chunks of kindergarten kids and it wasn't until I was able to show them the very beginnings of research back in the mid 1980s that showed that it was not impactful in terms of of supporting children so I'm so grateful to hear hear that that means a lot so back then we used to retain students in oh Middle School which was even worse of the research that's right

089thank you thank you for that thank you so much for that information doctor Service as well so here is the part of our agenda where we look to do some possible rules of items for the consent agenda so at this time um is there a member of our board who wants to request an item to be removed from our discussion and consideration before we move forward yeah I'd like to um move number four five eight and nine all right so you want to pull those for a separate discussion and vote separate yes or yeah for separate separate yeah yeah there's just it's just my difference they're not well do they need to be pulled Mrs career or you just have questions through the discussion process I have I have um I think the one that

090we need to be the one that needs to be pulled to be voted on on itself is number eight um but I do have a question on a question on number nine and on the on the other I can ask you I could just ask the question so Mrs our normal you mind if I yeah go ahead our typical process is that we uh vote we we vote to approve the consent agenda that Mrs dabs will ask for a first and a second and then she will open it up for discussion normally the only time that we pull an item for a separate vote is when there's absolute concern over the particular item because of conflict of interest or something where you really do not believe that um it that it needs to be a

091second vote a separate vote so is that what you're wanting well I I don't know because I have questions on some of these items that I I feel need to be addressed I I think that's all so I I don't know I think we need them so is the only one that you have a sign because if you're just asking for clarification then we can just go ahead and move the agenda all together but if you have a significant concern where you think my answer might sway your vote without him obviously you know I don't know what you're asking me because we haven't had this discussion yet so um that would be the one that I would those will be the items that I would pull if you really think that the answer is significant

092enough to where it could sway your vote to approve it [Music] you pull right now okay cool right now can we pull item eight for a separate vote number eight number eight please okay okay that's good anyway because Mr Ortega needs to abstain from that one anyway okay we'll pull number eight okay all right that's why I'm pulling okay so we're we are going to pull item number eight for a separate uh discussion and vote but we can proceed forward um and you're okay with that Mrs got it in terms of getting uh answers to your other questions yes yes okay okay all right so as we move forward um um we are going to we are now at item where we approve our consent agenda items um items one to three and one through

093nine before we have any discussion on these items can I get a motion to approve I move the recommendation of superintendent the Board of Education approved consent agenda items I3 through I-9 except I i8 okay thank you can I get a second a second all right it's been moved by Mr roboticio seconded by uh Mrs Kennedy now we will open up for discussion this is which item would you like to discuss first okay so first we'll go I guess with the classified member I think it's number nine okay so for the league of accent when people are unpaid foreign can you explain how a situation like the one that's up here for Miss Mesa Munoz um like six times as I'm falling so um so if they don't if there's not a benefit that they

094qualify for or if they've exhausted all the benefits where they would be getting paid then they would apply for an unpaid leave on that okay all right okay and then it stayed at 9 26. I have them open I don't are you still are you still on classified no I'm done this fast that's the only question I had so what's your next item that you want a question on the next item is dated 926 and it has a bunch of vendors and it talks about age five uh which number is it yeah which number is it yeah I'll get to the number it would have to be isn't it it's in five it's in five okay it's in five everyone yeah yeah okay which which is it what questions so my my question is I

095noticed that all of them are being looked at a lot of the schools for asbestos and led which is a survey a track project yes so some schools that are missing okay so as we've talked about um each one of our elementary schools with the exception of series and left mean well are going to be having HVAC systems put into each one of their cafeteria slash nprs so these are the first these are the first schools of that group um to go through that so you can see one two three four five six seven um and then you have so there are no middle schools correct because the middle schools are the board's agreement through measures R and Z were to do the Middle School gyms so this is just the testing for asbestos and

096and lead abatement and the survey to do that before we break ground for for the installation of those um HVAC units The Next Step um is to bring an RFP um or go through the the bidding process to hire a contractor to come in and place those HVAC units in our MPR and cafeterias okay so we have only one Middle School where the project is gonna happen no no no no no no all of that can you hear me out line item twelve PO number 23 1071 yes okay ideas group it says East Whittier Middle School HVAC project yes and then okay okay and then if we go down to item 22. um I'm sorry 23 it says the same thing that the elementary is saying about Asbestos and website survey correct project at Eastwood

097Middle School correct so we are so we're we are doing it for only one Middle School no this is the this is the time frame when East Whittier is being brought to the board I believe we already have the the already we've already had board approval for each for the other two so the reason why East Whittier is behind Granada in Hillview is because there are different considerations with that particular building so Granada and Hillview have already been approved by the board it's 22-23 fiscal year okay okay so is it possible to put the acceptable um references to lgbtq to add the Ia plus are you talking with regard to kinder future yeah exactly all night item number 82. you want that's that's how the contractor eats so when we put the information into the

098this item this is how the actual contract reads okay so this is just a matter of the board approving the actual expenditure of eight thousand dollars for a Kinder future to provide those services okay the okay so the acceptable references to lgbtq Plus ads in IA that's not that's not something that we can change what I'm saying is this contract specifically says that um we've we have not as a board had had conversations around the actual I um specific terminology and nomenclature that we use but we can definitely engage in that conversation okay so this contract is written by Kinder and that's how kinder this this depth of conversation I really need to be able to do some pull some more information for that okay okay I just I just wanted clarification number 83 Boys

099and Girls Club yes um restrictive funds is this a paid program for the parents right now the way that we pay the way that we charge for boys and girls club is 45 a year 40 if we charge our parents forty five dollars a year for this program do we have anything special for low-income parents for boys and girls but we did not I don't know I'm not sure I understand your question all our boys and girls our boys and girls club serve all of our Title One schools if they is an application process and if they cannot and if they cannot um pay then then the 45 is going to be waived over the next two years under elop we are not going to be charging any of our families for any of our

100programs such as the win Club Boys and Girls Club and right and right now um our commitment has been so this 720 000 that you see is specifically the Asus Grant so the after school safety and education grant um and they take Boys and Girls Club basically runs our entire Aces program but that is specific to a specific allocation from the state so our commitment using elop funds has been to add in any student above that number and right now the only um school that has a wait list is Mulberry and the only reason they have a wait list is as people have mentioned it's very difficult to get entry-level positions field across the the educational sector all right and this is I know we've had this conversation before foreign older student their child out

101early that legislation changed and so the boys and girls club actually has a new policy in place to allow students to leave but it's not like I'm gonna leave every day at five o'clock so there are there are parameters around that because this is tied to Aces so there's just some restrictions there are still some restrictions correct to me see it says here as needed right and then um it's just that the consultant will provide one page a language pathologist assistant to provide additional support to our schools so since this is for our special ed um did how many how many um speech and language students do we know do we have any uh any quantitative data on if it worked I don't change therapy or we could just no because we're renewing this right

102this is a master agreement so the the first one is to approve from the board level APO that then gives us the opportunity through the special education department to spend that twenty five thousand dollars right but my question is were they effective this they have not provided they have not provided the services yet Mrs Carrera it says okay that's my question all right any other questions no for the rest of our our war before we get to item uh eight any other questions Mrs Kennedy Mr okay all right all right so hearing none Mrs Hernandez would you please pull the board strap Mauricio yes Mrs Carrera yes Mr urjiaga yes Mrs Kennedy yes and Mrs dapps yes all right we will now move to um open up discussion for item eight so before we do

103make um this motion we do Mr Thiago will not be able to vote on this particular item as he has a family member on the on the item all right any questions can I get a second a second all right so it's been moved by Mr roboticio seconded by Mrs Kennedy any further questions on item eight all right hearing none Mrs Hernandez would you please pull the board Mr Santa Maria yes yes Mr aparicio yes Mrs Carrera yes Mr artiago abstain Mrs Kennedy yes Mrs doubts yes all right thank you we now move to our adjournment section but before we do I just want to make sure that every one of us here and those that are watching on YouTube know that our next Board of Education meeting will be held on November the 14th

104but before we move to adjourn are there any board members who would like to make any comments going forward yes as always please try and save water we're still in a drought and one other thing I want to remind everybody of is that we live in earthquake countries so please be prepared at all times in your home you know have water have all you know they have lists of stuff if you go on the internet on what you should have your list of medications a flashlight because we seem to forget since we haven't had an earthquake for a while but you know it's always there it's always there the possibility so please always be prepared for that thank you good thought Mr operation yeah yeah Mr San Andreas no no I do have a question
