013gluck director of administrative services and she is going to present the ian white memorial installation by troop 860. so good evening i would like to welcome karen and alan white along with current and former troop 860 and their scout masters karen and alan can you come up to the podium today we are presenting karen and alan white parents of ian white a former hermos valley student with a legacy plaque that he that will be installed at hermosa valley school ian was an extremely special person that touched me as well as his classmates and he was a boy and he was a boy scout and i know he touched a lot of you in december 2013 ian was diagnosed with cancer while he was in eighth grade and i was his principal and i was proud

014to get him through eighth grade with darren i wish we had zoom back then we really tried to keep being connected with his classmates and we had computers and we just couldn't get the video to work and darn cove it happened and they got it all right so um i it was it was he was just a great kid so let me tell you a little bit about him um he was in troupe 860 and they did a project at hermosa view where i was the principal and we had these tables that were there god knows forever and him and all these young men came to the school and they refurbished them they painted him and our school was sparkly shining and clean and it was great and he did this when he was sick

015and he did it with a passion and i was so proud of him for everything he did despite his obstacles he earned the eagle scout award on october 24 2007 and he was able to get his scout master conference in his hospital room he lost his battle with cancer a few months later in january 5th 2008. um he never got to attend high school in person but graduated from miracosta nonetheless and there is a scholarship in his name it's called the ian mayo y lazarus cancer foundation award is given each year to the scout of troop 860 who best exemplifies the leadership strength courage and inspirational spirit and his of his character but what i want to say to you too is i am thankful that i was able to spend this time with him

016when he was sick for those that don't know you that don't know me um ian couldn't go into school but he kept visiting me as much as he could and we had some great conversations that made me so happy all the time and i appreciate that time we spent together um he taught me to cherish small things in life and he'll never be forgotten um we want to present this plaque this was the original plaque that was at her most view and we want to give it to the family so they can have it and there's a card there um a lot of amazing people help to contribute the plaque and now we're going to have this beautiful new plaque at hermos the view school and we're going to continue to put it in the

017area um you want to share it with everyone so that's going to go in our new school at hermosa view and it will be back in the lunch area we're blind so i just want to say to karen allen thank you for lending sharing your son with us he was truly a special person sylvia said um ian attended hermosa you you and valley he loved school very much he loved the kids uh he had a lot of good friendships and still i'm sure he would still be friends with a lot of them um kids today he um he graduated a year behind his um his original class and then he went to miracosta he did go to school for about nine months and then he relapsed cancer and went to his lungs and he was

018unable to attend school after that so um but hermosa did such a great job teaching him and nurturing him that even after only attending high school for nine months he um in 2007 he actually took the um what is it the high school equivalency exam and he actually passed with only nine months of school in high school so that goes to show you how much mimosa valley school really um nurtured him and taught him so thank you very much for this honor too can't wait to see it installed okay and thank you to 860 we really appreciate all your hard work thank you thank you christine for rescuing that old plaque and giving it to us i appreciate it yeah thank you very much yeah we're going to have a board president join as well

019too and we had good times there was four years of treatments and i think 100 weeks of chemotherapy and uh toward the end the dorm side family i got involved in getting into a gene therapy program that looked pretty good like we were going to be in the stadium but it wasn't enough he had a wonderful summer the summer before he died he developed a new lifestyle he spent the summer at the beach and uh he went to school he lived a whole lifetime that summer but uh there's a post threat to this and the story i i've told many times that after after he left us we kind of uh exposed the door to his room we didn't go in there very much and in about a year and a half later my wife

020said that we got to do something with his room let's turn it into an office so one sunday morning we go in we start taking his airplanes that he made off of saving and we don't we didn't ever had tv at our house that he wanted our kids to read but he found a tv antenna i do a lot of a lot of dormitories and technologies there's a bed up above and a computer station down below as him and i do and we start tearing that down and what do we give away and what do we throw away and when we get things here and about and i hear somebody say hello i have on my lookout for the father ray now from our lady of guadalupe riding by these bicycles i said father can

021you come in we need to talk to you and party bikes came in and said 15 minutes but i was really sure it thought it is that uh everything was all right with him and uh and he said well hey he had an appointment he had to leave and we're just kind of standing there saying for 25 years sylvia do you want to hold up the new clock all right thank you so much all right thank you everyone for that thank you sylvia and family and troop appreciate you taking the time to be here next i'm going to transocean over we're going to present our employees of the year christine cue it it's you and i'm out all right so this is our second annual employees of the year very excited um i'm gonna talk

022a little bit about our process slide what do we do no no no no no no just yeah christine's got it yeah all right cool thanks sorry there's you know surprise ending um okay so uh here's our process um you mean like employees of the year are nominated by their colleagues um the principal selects a classified and certificated staff member from each school and this year we had a whopping 36 employees nominated wowser wow goodness just for context last year i believe we had 21 employees nominated so just a lot of love in the air all right slide here are some of the nominating qualifications i will not read them all but they just you know we we have some pretty great people here and the people that like were nominated are you know they're

023just darn great and something i really want to highlight as well too is like you know this and the previous and probably ongoing art you know unique years um and so the what i think you're going to see today is that um you know everyone really is employee of the year as far as i'm concerned when it comes to uh this year um but uh these people had you know unique opportunities to distinguish themselves and you know like what i call the you know the covet plus year um and they've just you know made some achievements that go above and beyond to what i would say meet the moment um so just really really grateful to them and i'm looking forward to hearing more about them slide first up i'd like to invite principal lisa

024tonita and miss heather meyer to come on up miss tanita it's your show well i don't i mean when you see heather i think you already know what i'm about to say but i'm super excited to share with you heather myers as our employee of the year for classified it was really hard we have a lot of a lot of employees like you dr johnson mentioned there was 36 nominees but heather is our school librarian and so much more um you can see her every morning on 25th street valet welcoming kids with a big smile and a hug um if you come at lunchtime you'll see her at the picnic tables having book lunch clubs at on fridays she's in the health office helping putting on band-aids and ice packs so you name it no

025job is too big or too small miss heather myers is there um she's always ready to jump in and support in classrooms and anywhere in the school and this has been a really challenging year for librarians at we're at vista and she is the librarian on a cart she doesn't actually have a has a physical space but she's so flexible and creative she has just spread that love of reading throughout the cart going back and forth to both campuses as well um and she's just the inspiration not just to the students to the staff she always has a big smile on her face and is just ready to say how can i help and i think one of the phrases she always says is that readers are leaders and she is the walking evidence of

026that and um i can't think of anybody better to just honor and recognize today so congratulations to miss heather myers all right heather thank you and heather would you like to say something do you have a speech prepared i don't know if i was supposed to i just wanted to say like you know we're good say that we right in the front yeah and i'm gonna get all emotional i'm not gonna cry but i'm gonna cry i'm just really happy to be here and i work with the best people and you can do your best when you work with the best people and i remember when i interviewed with you i walked out of that interview and i called my husband and i said they are never going to hire me and i was so

027thrilled and it's been a wild ride ever since so thank you so much thank you so much i really you're very welcome and lisa is gonna come back up and present your plaque to you the wave we have the wave it's right up there in front yeah all good yeah just yeah just just keep that to yourself all right yep great did we get that wave for her lisa there you go excellent congratulations lisa you just you just stay right up there because we're gonna do classified employee of the year you just we're gonna keep it going oh sorry uh certificated i was like i got a little fuzzy on this one that's okay we can still celebrate her all right so next hit it all right super excited to share miss shelley baldi um

028district nurse with you as our employee of the year for certificated she i don't know what other word to explain to describe her she's absolutely amazing she's like wonder woman um running around our campus uh as you know this year has been very very challenging with health protocols and things changing all the time but she's always kept everybody whether it's students staff family you know their health and safety a priority and it's kept our schools open and and um students are able to learn and thrive because of that um and if you watch her if you ever on campus you will see her literally running up the stairs to classrooms down back to the health office just to support students wherever they need whether it's their health needs whether it's you know covered protocol and

029you know when can i come back to school um she is just a calming voice that's always caring and is giving wisdom in meaningful chunks so everybody's like okay i got this we can do it i can't imagine doing this year without nurse shelly she's just been amazing and i know she not only runs up and down our hallways and stairs but she also gets in her little car and runs over to valley too to support there so um shelley's gone above and beyond duty and i wish she was here i thought she was coming sorry um but should i what should i do with what you're gonna do is you're going to hold up the wave okay and hold up the certificate okay and then we're all going to say shelly we love you

030one two three shelly we love you all right i'm pretty sure she heard that so we can all feel good yeah uh shelley shelley's been dealing with some homes yeah the woman's always left she's probably working right now to be totally frank so um good stuff and we'll we'll circle back to her so thank you for that all right next i'd like to invite principal bledsoe and she's going to present her classified employee of the year certificated employee of the year nope you're wrong classified employee of the year okay and hillary's back join me yeah follow my lead sorry my apologies oh hey hilary how's it going all right hillary so hillary is going to present classified employee of the year please yeah miss carrie always has a smile on her face and brings a

031calm positivity to the front office at valley school all day every day miss carrie welcomes students and parents is ready to learn and accomplish anything jumps in whenever and wherever needed and gets things done she pays close attention to detail and keeps track of a million things messages to pass along what staff has come in and headed out which students are headed to whose office whose parent dropped off which forgotten item and every other fleeting detail in the front office carrie cares about kids and adults and her commitment to our school community is reflected in her work ethic and her output she has kept the office up and running through many transitions and challenges over the past few years and always with genuine care and humility most people don't get to enjoy carrie's sense of

032humor as she's visibly typing away and answering phone calls and writing party slips but i can tell you she has made me laugh harder than just about anyone in the front office and carrie is very fun loving but also very loving and it is my honor and pleasure to present carrie with this very well deserved award tonight carrie on behalf of your colleagues at valley school thank you for your extraordinary work wait wait wait carrie can you say a few words i hear you're good at jokes all right let her take a picture very good since she won't speak i'll say something uh sylvia just whispered in my ear she's my higher um so carrie we just could not be more pleased i can just really say just being in the district just two years

033like like when the first time i heard about carrie pinky if if you know her the the the word was i was like i was like who's this like carrying like no that's pinkie and i was like all right who's pinky so like and i'm like i'm like she has like four different jobs so like i'm looking through like expense reports they're like no she like literally does every job here on campus like food services to custodian to uh uh what was the latest oh attendance i almost forgot what you did because you worked so many jobs so and and now she will be our future administrative assistant um and she deserves it congratulations we love you carrie thank you all right next up we're for realsies gonna have jessica bledsoe present the certificated employee

034of the year i'd like to invite denise veletini stern okay denise i know don't judge me there's a lot to talk uh denise is a one-of-a-kind leader professional and friend i'm going to hold it together i promise i promise throughout our considerable time together in only one year i have become to rely on her calm voice and measured responses even when she says no she does it with such poison grace that you literally can't argue with her taking her word for it has become the theme of my year and she's never let me down to say that denise is well respected on our team is the understatement of the century in a year like no other right her knowledge of special education as well as her experience in hermosa has been the north star for

035us at valley she authentically cares about the kids and decisions center around what's best for them always i almost never find her office empty because she has secured her position as wise counsel and the result of that is that she's never alone that's challenging for a school psychologist who has performed 50 000 assessments in one year no joke i don't exaggerate the combination of skills denise brings to the table are endless i in closing i formally move to change her title to your royal highness deity of the least restrictive environment and mental health awareness in all seriousness we are all so lucky to have this fantastic person as a member of our team and our community family too thank you this is yours i too emma sylvia sylvia you will be on the panel you

036shouldn't have said that for him denise got off that podium really fast so we'll assume that she also is trying to avoid speaking so i will say i'm a huge fan of denise as a special educator special educator she's the real deal um and we're just really grateful to her leadership for last years we would seriously not be where where we are right now with support for our students with special needs and i'll be first say during the height of covid they were first to rush back in the door quite literally so thank you for that don't don't do it yet don't do it yet christine hold all right i'd like to present to you your administrator of the year hit it christine miss hillary over back this over back come on up here congratulations

037all right now we're going to say nice things about you miss over back exemplifies perseverance mission and hard work hermosa hired hillary in 2014 to teach kindergarten and since then she is taught third grade fourth grade and sixth grade one year ago miss overbeck became the principal of hermosa's first summer school in its history she was so successful in this endeavor to which she named summer propel academy that the district was inspired to develop a long-term plan and write a grant to provide summer propel academy for years to come thanks sylvia thanks you too because it was a lot of work all right during this same summer hillary was busy interviewing for an administrative position with the district for the fall this was also the same summer when she was facing a layoff notice she

038was a finalist but did not win the administrative position subsequently hillary agreed to become a sixth grade teacher another change to her grade level assignment from the previous year it would be a great story and personal resilience if it ended there but it doesn't this school year will be considered one of the most challenging in the history of public education that said it almost underestimates how intimidating it was to face this school year back in september 2021 through circumstance hillary was asked to become the assistant principal of hermosa valley one week after school began keep in mind she had just taken on a new grade level assignment after a brief offer opportunity to discuss with her family smart she agreed agreeing to an overwhelming challenge that included a new principal relative a relatively new and

039somewhat kooky superintendent and becoming an administrator with which she had just spent her career being a colleague at the same school miss overbeck rose to that challenge and then some her work this year represents exemplary resilience in the face of adversity and inspiring loyalty to the mission of public education she was called upon and she embraced her calling as an education leader one of the many qualities i admire about hillary is her faith i believe her faith is what makes her such a standout educator embodying a strong belief in doing your best to make the world around you better and more specifically better for our kids said she's also a pretty damn good assistant principal sometimes dubbed the most grueling job in administration taking on the dirty work of running a campus hillary does it

040all schedules student support bike safety recess duty you name it she probably has a hand in it hillary is a get it done kind of administrator and as great as she was in the classroom her impact campus wide has made the best little beach schools a little bit better on behalf of her most beach city school district i want to thank miss hillary overback her family travis caleb and asher and her principal jessica bledsoe for her extraordinary accomplishments and recognize her as this year's administrator of the year congratulations thank you very much congrats take a picture you're gonna have to say a few words too because you work for me dr johnson and ford and the person who hired me thank you this is a huge very unexpected honor and i am so grateful to

041work for the best little beach school district in the world um i love my job i love my colleagues i love all of our kids so um i love showing up to work every day and it's a pleasure to do all of that list of random things um so thank you for that opportunity and thank you for this honor you're very welcome yeah let's talk if we have all the employees of the year come down a photo please [Applause] oh my goodness all right now people can go to bed [Music] well that was a fun set of announcements thank you dr johnson yeah no problem we're going to move on to public comment at this point um we see who clears out here see what's remaining feeling we were going to have no problem coming

042in just a feeling um are there any pink slips christine pink slips pink pink notes are there any pink comment cards no we don't have any comment cards for this evening so seeing that there's no comment cards we're going to close public comment and check on virtual public comment there's nobody waiting for virtual comment tonight maggie nobody waiting for virtual public comments we're going to close public comment and go to written communication uh so let me check here let me do a log out and see if i've captured everything that might have gone to the board and then we can do round robin on that uh so received an email um doing kudos for hearts of hermosa from parent andrew cahigas to me i received an email from carolyn petty about the marijuana task force

043the board received an email from suzanne evans about the sand dune uh the board received an email about uh school safety procedures from sonia parikh parika and i received an email from parent diana shu on school calendars are there any other correspondence needs to be reported out nope jen good quentin good okay that is it on written communication turn into the superintendent update thank you maggie okay so um first i did uh it's it's a busy week um we had open house at valley um on tuesday it was fantastic thank you to the board for your attendance we have open house on thursday at hermosa vue just so great to get back into classrooms and just a lot of positive energy in the air is having students you know show their parents their projects and

044just getting to see the culmination of the work so it was just a really great evening [Music] on that similar vein we held our first senior send-off event where we invited back our redondo and miracosta 12th graders who are about to graduate for reunion and to see each other to see their old teachers and to do it on our campus and we had a lot of activities bye capri tell your dad i said hey um so it was a great um a really really great uh evening and just we learned that we learned a lot i mean like from talking with our students and it was really great to see them interacting with each other that was probably the most special part honestly and something i just want to highlight is that it really continues

045to demonstrate just the unique quality of attending hermosa schools that binds these kids together and it is very special um and and you talk to any one of them and that is the first thing that they'll say so i was just very taken by that um we had our tri-agency meeting last week with beach city's health district and the city of hermosa beach it's been a really fruitful productive relationship and our focus has been youth safety for the last year we plan to give that update to the board in july our bike safety assembly which was one of the initiatives from the tri agency was held also last week two weeks ago week and a half ago and it was complete with an awesome personal account from one of our local residents david and his

046initiative love your brain about the importance of wearing bike helmets we also had hbpd come down and give a great and great words about some of the rules and regulations around bike safety uh particularly around e-bikes and then we um also we two of our miracosta students have been working with hppd and our school district and our teachers and staff to to film this awesome safety video that will be out by the end of this week super excited to see that debut and then we'll have a bike rodeo event which will be a bike training exercise next week for our third grade students will they'll be in all day safety activities where they'll learn rules of the road and get some pretty intensive training about bike safety so really just trying to do our part

047to make sure that the community and our students are safe and we thank you for everyone's support team effort also next or next week is we're having a unhoused awareness assembly unhoused population awareness assembly so we do have um several members of our community are unhoused and do not have a home and we've been working with harbor interfaith as well as the city hermosa beach to provide some awareness activities for our students in order to learn a little bit about the why behind that we've worked with our associated student body in order to um gather their questions and we're going to be i think a pretty awesome assembly that's kind of that's going to be interactive and so we'll also see that next week and this will be a series that will continue end into

048next year as well too uh we met for the north uh i remember the neighborhood traffic management plan um and uh good meeting actually took place in this room and got a lot of good feedback about the implementation of the traffic management plan at vista um and we're making like that next transition over uh to uh the final resting place of our campus population with third through fourth graders being at hermosa vista so we're probably going to see a different traffic pattern which we believe will be lighter one because of the demographic of students are more likely to walk or ride their bike to school and two because there's just significantly less students so we're going from 395 students that are currently at hermosa vista to approximately 250 um and that's because the the there's

049one less grade level that will be there and that will be moving forward um we had our tk nancy left that we had our tkk hermosa vue sneak peek parent tour um special thanks to erickson hall nancy and the team and we got our our new incoming tkk parents onto the campus they got to see um the tkk buildings take a look a walk around we had a little video that we made for them and some images and walked them through a lot of great questions it was really fun a lot of excitement and energy from our parents and we're looking forward to that opening date in august and the debut um what is it the second year so second year second year third year second year second year of full day tk kender wow

050yeah jeez man oh my god so um uh looking for that and then finally on friday at hermosa valley i will get my comeuppance because of the success of the dolphin dash and be pied in the face by miss gretchen bizzy now i i plan to dress really nice that day you mean like in hopes that miss fizzy will see how good i look and be like no i don't want to ruin your suit so i'm really hoping that that's how it's going to work out i did see her throwing shot put in the field the other day which i don't really i don't really understand i don't know if she's involved in that sport um but uh i hope it all works out for me so come on down if you'd like to might

055alumni send-off um steven's not here this evening but i wanted to send my congratulations and thanks uh on behalf of the board to him for his work he's done on the bike safety campaign and um open house last night was wonderful so i know a bunch of us were there we're looking forward to the vista views uh open house this later this week so thank you anything else from the board i was just gonna say the wellness um committee did meet i was not in attendance but dr johnson can give us just a brief update that's right yeah sorry yeah you were there sorry i thought i was gonna escape um uh yes wellness council met it was a we did an in-person meeting and did a little thank you breakfast they are just such

056a great crew and maggie and jen both know just some awesome parents and stay our counseling staff uh principal plot bledsoe and um we did some uh final uh planning for just the structure of the committee next year and they're just a thoughtful group and and we had some really great ideas about how to continue to make that committee council i call it a council now more innovative and then we also put the final touches on the uh hermosa beach wellness programs um uh an inventory of our work this year going into next year and then new proposals for next year and that is currently available on our website under uh wellness council thank you for that and be on behalf of the board thank you to those participants for volunteering their time this year

057and all their good intentions and thoughts okay moving on to superintendent report and board discussion uh kicking off with r-54-2122 social studies hi um i'm here to talk to you about one of my favorite topic topics which is curriculum adoptions it's probably the highlight of my job that i get to do every few years but we're going to talk to you about the processes but most importantly about the best curriculum that we picked for our district and how it aligns to high engagement and an abundance of opportunities for our students to learn about history social science in a context that's exciting so right please um when we make all of our decisions in our district we do look to our three lcap goals and the adoption of a new um history social science curriculum just

058hit all three of these um goals in that we're looking at professional development we're looking for inclusion and equity when we're teaching our students and we're trying to provide them with a curriculum that is um financially aligned to our district's financial goals as well it's like but here's why it's the best curriculum there's so it's so exciting um we did a pilot of a k-5 curriculum we did social studies weekly which is aligned to the content standards from the california department of education we have been using this curriculum at hermosaview for quite some time and we brought um grades four and five to pilot um social studies weekly what we were really focusing though on is the history social science um curriculum for grades six through eight and we hadn't done an adoption since 2006

059so we wanted to make sure it was aligned with content standards as well as frameworks but here are some things that i want to tell you why it's the best curriculum it highlights rigor and it's engaging there's high impact for inquiry based activities it's aligned to evidence-based writing and there's compelling essential questions for our students so they can access higher order thinking skills there's interactive timelines and maps i can go on and on probably for a whole day about why our process was rigorous why we picked it and why our um committee chose this curriculum next slide please um here's my fantastic group that i worked with i was fortunate to have um teachers administrators as well as different subgroups of populations that represent special ed and el in our group classified staff as well

060as parents involved the diversity of our group with our educational partners helped in having a great dialogue and in regards to creating a rubric that outlined what our district wanted in a curriculum next please um the one we had uh three days of professional development um that i led the first thing was um just what does the history social science framework look like there were some major shifts that are listed here um we really worked at creating a rubric because we wanted to pick the best curriculum but what we had to do is look at the framework first to look at what topics and what subjects and how they align to the content standards and we previewed four textbooks right please um day two we had several publishers come to show us their program um

061when you're sitting there you look at everything and everything looks great it's not until you create a rubric and you align it to district needs and you actually pilot it in the classroom that you can make a decision based on the content the internet interactiveness with students so we sat we listened to everyone we created a rubric and we narrowed it down to two publishers slide please um we chose to highlight tci which is teachers curriculum institute as well as mcgraw-hill impact um you can see um the timelines that we used we sent communication out to our parents to allow them to come in to look at the textbooks and to preview any materials that we had like please the most important thing was our rubric our rubric was our deciding factor on what we

062would choose and we did it base our choices from the california history social science project out of uc davis which is a consortium of educators and professors who want to keep history um alive and make sure it's aligned properly um we looked at various things that were important to hermosa beach we looked at does it align with our technology um is it differentiated and is it rigorous are there big essential questions for our students are there writing components how is it aligned to the common core standards we wanted to pick a curriculum that expanded our students knowledge of history but also split into the different areas of social studies english language arts and science this is a very interactive curriculum and we also wanted to have a hard copy as well as a digital copy

063we want our students to be able to have lighter backpacks when they go home but in the classroom they have a textbook that they can refer to and we wanted it to work with our single sign-on that was really important as well as work with any device that a student may have at home whether it's a chromebook or their phone or an ipad those were the things that were really important for us as well as interactive maps that could be changed based on the boundaries of how history is changing every day life please so after we did the pilot we reviewed our rubrics the teachers also talked to the students in about the both curriculums and in regards to what they appreciated about tci and what they appreciate about impact and really what it boiled

064down to is we needed rigor we wanted differentiation we wanted to align to content standards and we wanted it to be able to be accessible to students at home as well as school no matter where they were at we did choose impact by mcgraw-hill we are very excited about it because we feel it's the best curriculum that we can offer for our students and we will have this curriculum because we are adopting it for seven years so the cost presented is a one-time cost and we will be using our lottery funds um to purchase that there is inclusion of professional development for our teachers that we will schedule some time for them to be trained on the materials we'll have class sets of textbooks for every student in class including our special education classes so

065we're very excited about that we did decide on the pilot to have fifth grade be included on impact because they will be on the same campus as six or eight and we wanted that transition to be seamless for our students as they prepare to go to middle school so that was one change that we did do through the dialogue we had and then k through four we will continue to use social studies weekly it is a weekly magazine that students use in the classroom they can bring home there are a lot of primary sources there as well and we've used it for a few years at most of you and we really enjoyed it and the fourth grade team found it very valuable as well please so here's the next pieces of the adoption process

066and once the um board adopts the curriculum um we need to schedule some days for professional development with our staff as well as order the textbooks and um ops get rid of our old textbooks and bring them to the board too as obsolete materials slides please that's it thank you so much as a former social studies teacher i too i'm very excited about this um jason what was the last president exhibited in this social studies textbook i don't know it was like carter or something uh any questions from the board can you just talk a little bit about the parent um component of who who was in the committee and how that worked because i feel like that's a real i just want to make sure parents know that they were listened to and and

067heard that that was my impression um first of all we solicited parents via an email and we actually had more parent volunteers than we had spots um this was it's very exciting because as we move forward to new um adoptions we know we can encounter our parents to be there and parents were chosen from grades sixth seventh and eighth there were multiple parents male female parents that have been in the district for a long time parents that were new to the district so we had a cross group of people some people no one knew other people you know we've known for a while that are very active they participated just like the teachers in regards to all the professional development we dissected the framework chapter by chapter um they were placed in groups with teachers

068so they had the collaboration with our staff so they can hear our staff as well as our staff could hear what parents wanted we um previewed all the materials they were helped in the creation of the rubric they assisted with actually coming to the library and looking at the textbooks during different hours and they shared with their cohort's appearance what they were doing and how they were participating we also sent a letter out to our families in regards to the adoption that they were welcome to come and look at the textbooks um as well at the valley school office thank you and just in terms of like ideological spectrum there was parents from all different sides of the everything yeah so i just wanted to make sure the public knows that it was it was

069pretty heavily scrutinized by families as well i think it's a good story dialogue from all people involved in the committee and the parents were what represented on all sides great thank you clinton uh kudos uh to to you guys for conducting such a rigorous process one kind of question there was a reference in the presentation to common core i'm not super familiar i know you know common core math is uh um often talked about is there a common core for social studies or how does that relate so how it's related with the common core is in the language arts component of it so in the new history social studies standards there is a lot of writing and public speaking and those align with the common core standards for each grade level along with the content

070that's required for each standard in history social study great thanks and i don't know if this was a factor in the decision at all and it looks like these are all very california-specific so i don't know if there's any such thing as a national social studies you know curriculum offering or recommendations but do we know how popular mcgraw is versus tci in california versus other options they both are very um though they're both liked by in california i know um manhattan beach adopted um mcgraw oh great okay thank you very much other questions doug you're good no no i have no other questions but i know pbe adopted um mcgraw as well excellent thank you so much for presenting on that excited for our students to have new textbooks thank you california lottery okay uh

071moving on to the lcap budget presentation people want to know where our budget our taxpayer dollars go for the water it's it's funding social studies textbooks okay okay serious stuff here paula and i are here to present the lcap as well as the budget for next school year um the budget as well that as well as the lcap are aligned very closely to our three goals um just a reminder this is our second year of our lcap so the lcap does report on progress um and then we have the opportunity to enhance our um goals based on our action items slide please um what is the lcap so um everyone knows that the lcap who's been on in public education for the last few years is based on our lcf funding um and it's linked

072to the needs of all students but there is a high concentration on our unduplicated students that we focus on and the actions that we create and it is a three-year plan we are in year two of our three-year plan so you can see um how we fared from last year based on the lcap that's presented in the board um agenda and it tells the story of how our district's doing based on the goals that we created based on the needs and feedback we received from our parents as well as teachers and staff who are considered educational partners side please there are eight priorities that need to be addressed in the lcap these are addressed within our three goals we must include these eight somewhere in the three goals and we cover them very nicely so

073when you look at our goals you can see underneath where the prior priorities are and this just ensures that we have a well-rounded lcap that it includes all the following um conditions of learning engagement and people pupil outcomes slide please i'm the lcap so we're funded lcff paula does most of the budgeting but our funding needs to be in proportion with our unduplicated students so our actions need to show that we are improving the educational benefits that those students are getting with the funding that we receive from the state so our actions need to be tied specifically and they are addressed um specifically in the lcap the funding can also be used for all students as well but we do need to target um our funding for unduplicated students and report out on it we

074are looking at quality and not quantity so we want to see improvement in all of our areas of growth and opportunities slide please the one nice thing about the lcap it is a cycle it's not a year plan that we put away it's a it's a plan that we look at we measure our data we learn from what we're doing right or what we need to change and how we can improve it our job as a public educators is to ensure we're providing an excellent educational program for our students and that they're making gains in academic areas as well as social emotional areas based on our goals slide please when you look at hermosa beach we have a ton of educational partners and we're very fortunate in that we have so many opportunities to gather

075input from our families from our staff as well as students and it just doesn't include surveys we have committees um that provide feedback to our superintendent as well as our lcap committee as well as our pto um every voice is important to us and we take every suggestion into um consideration and we use it when we're measuring um what we want to do as a district and how we want to prioritize our goals slide please you can see that from the amount of surveys that we've taken this year we've received a lot of feedback and from the diverse partners that we have from parents staff and students um we have surveyed a lot this year i think next year we're going to spread out our surveys a little bit more because we did survey our

076families and our staff but we were coming out of cova so we wanted to hear every voice slide what kind of needs were identified by our family the first thing was professional development and in what areas so we need to continue to focus on our intervention level literacy tier 2 strategies science we also want to provide professional development to our administrators as well to give them the opportunity to continue to grow and learn in various areas of the educational process and our students they want more diverse options in their curriculum so we've done i i feel like a really good job miss blood so in asking students what they want to learn dr jason and i also have been to um dr johnson sorry i've been to the high school and asking our students like

077what did they learn from her most or what do they want differently and we're taking that into consideration they are educational partners as well even though they've moved on to the high school so that's been really helpful in providing different options for us our social emotional wellness isn't one of our number one priorities to make sure that our students feel safe at school feel comfortable so they can learn and thrive and we want to continue with high engagement we want to make sure our students are engaged in the learning process and participating so they can retain the information they receive side please we will continue um with our lcap um and the three goals that we have we've added um additional funding to um the three um goals um but they are aligned to the

078feedback that we've received from our educational partners slide please um our goals remain the same you can see our priority areas are listed on the bottom um so we're going to continue to do the work that we've started and continue to improve our students performance as well as our social emotional well-being slide please so when we talk about our unduplicated students these are the areas that we really are focusing on so our intervention teacher we want to provide um outside of the instructional day support to students that are below grade level and small group instruction that's online as well as in person we have our intervention curriculum we're going to continue to and expand this curriculum and provide a target it's going to be targeted to our duplicated students we are going to continue with

079iready sound partners level of literacy intervention and ireti along with um the things on the right those are all new that we we're using to augment our expanded programming um we're going to add orton gillingham professional development for special education departments they can really focus in on closing the achievement gap in reading we've added air tutors this year as a pilot for students who need extra help in math we've created a elective called student academic support that's targeted to students who are not meeting grade level and progress and that we can work with them closely as well as implementing play works on the elementary school site bye please under culture of excellence here's the areas that we're focusing on are unduplicated students for our english learners we're going to continue with professional development reclassification to

080support our students elpac testing supported by our el coordinator and 2.9 english learner support we have a intervention program for those students that they're able to attend and get additional assistance on the right we've really dug into what we want to do for next year and i'm excited for the work that's coming ahead of us we're going to purchase some guided reading collections for our classroom teachers we're going to continue with the fnp coaching so our staff can become well-versed and more diverse with the fnp program very excited is the pre-k program that is rolling out from the state we've just looked at some fantastic curriculum that we're excited to bring to the district um so there's a lot of excellent things um happening but most important grade level planning days um we really want

081to focus on data talks with our grade levels and bring ireti in to look at that data and then how do we take that data to move our kids up to the next level that's something i really would like to focus on next year bye please in regards to goal three on the right we are going to continue to spread the word about hermosa beach we know enrollment enrollment enrollment we want to pack those classrooms with students but we also are going to provide some paraprofessionals for the tk classroom that's a new mandate that's coming down get some help with our additional schools and provide some additional support at the school sites and our e-lab program i'm excited about that too we're going to be providing additional enrichment programs um at the schools bye please

082cancel and summer all you're next so we'll talk a little bit about the local control funding formula um it's the money that we get from the state um to fund all the programs that we run at the school and they've been identified in the lcap certain goals and funds have been tied to specific goals next slide so this is the budget overview for parent slide this is about um what sylvia was talking about for the intervention classes our high needs students are unduplicated students the left side of the chart shows the different buckets of money that we get from the state local and federal funding and then on the right there's that small piece of the pie 189 000 has been set aside for that program next slide budgeted in our lcap this year is

08316.6 million dollars um 14 million a little over 14 million have been tied to specific goals next slide now we get to the meat of the presentation the budget i just wanted to share a few of the guiding principles and assumptions for the budget this year um the first one would be enrollment um is based on our moderate enrollment projections um our funded ada what has been recommended for us to follow is current year enrollment prior year enrollment or a three-year rolling average for 22-23 it's the three-year rolling average that is the best for our district and the consecutive years it would be the current year as we continue to build enrollment the current year is going to be the um the highest model to use for 22 23 you can see um the revenue

084and expenditures and our net budget is deficit spending 599 which is down a little over 500 000 from second interim next slide when we take a look at our reserves i want to draw your attention to the reserves by percentage is at 30 percent uh for by at the end of 2223 next slide so our next steps is we've presented to you today we'd like you need to have the lcap adopted prior to the end of the june and then we need to upload it to the la county office of education website five days after the adoption and then upload it on our district website and just ensure that it's available for our public our parents and our educational partners to view it and it is available at the district office downstairs at room 1

085and has been since friday june 3rd questions this is a massive undertaking and i knew there was a stakeholder group thank you clinton for being a part of that um but thank you both for all of your attention and work on this um i want to i have some questions but i'll open up to the board for any questions or comments um yeah thank you for all the hard work that has gone into this i this may be a more question for jason but um you know paul you talked about using the three year rolling average uh can you talk about one of you guys kind of where we are on legislation and um cola and ada and enrollment and thing things like that i know we've been highly involved in uh advocating for what

086what is best for us yeah i can take that one so um it's it's looking good uh the governor and the legislature i think are closing in on an agreement granted that could you know come as late as late august um i don't think it'll take that long just because it seems like there's a lot of alignment between the governor's proposal and the legislature um uh what i would say is that the cola increases that we're seeing is that's that's pretty much a given at this point there doesn't seem to be any um discrepancy there if anything i think we'll see more money not less on the hold harmless and or rolling average um the i would say that it it still works you know it still matters but some of the one-time costs that

087are or one-time cash that's being proposed on top of the lcff almost makes it a push to some extent um and so it's i think it's an additional per student yeah so um i would say that that as we get into july like it'll become hard and i think a good sign is that laco released a formula based off of these numbers so um we feel pretty confident that we're seeing numbers that are close to what it's going to be and or likely will be better if not worse so give you enough yeah that was perfect thank you thanks just to clarify though it's not going to be the whole harmless categorical anymore it's going to be a one-time lump sum that will be given to districts to to use as they need right that

088that is correct giving that there yeah some limited instruction about how that million-dollar you know the 1500 per ada can be um spent right to mitigate learning loss and a few other things right um just to clarify that one time money has not been included in this because it's still not been decided we feel that those parameters that we've like on those money so that we've been working around for so long at this point that we're not worried about that level of restriction in the categoricals i was just going to say i just um i i like that we continue to put in our lcap the social and emotional wellness part i'm just looking back at some of the california healthy kids survey information and it's pretty distressing when you look at fifth grade to

089sixth grade to seventh grade um in terms of their social emotional distress and considered suicide and chronic sadness and those kind of the statistics are still pretty high so i just in case families are wondering why funds are still getting put in that direction i still think this is a an area where we continually have to be aware of all the time and just try to keep unlocking kids as much as we can in their brains and what's happening so i have a question probably for you jason on this um first of all i really appreciate the the benchmark data percentages we're looking at where it shows like where we want to get to and how we're putting in measurables in there it's super helpful uh as we're measuring all this work i'm curious so

090like when we're looking at the data where i'm looking on page 16 of the lcap where it starts to talk about where our students are doing at from i ready and majority of our students are in the high 70s at or above grade level but our unduplicateds are still really low with for els off of ela you know 61 for our economically disadvantaged 51 with students with special needs what's the possibility that all the interventions like not that we're in the forecasting business but with all the interventions we're proposing next year like how do we what what growth can we expect based off those interventions with pretty sizable gaps so we saw a subgroup growth in all of our subgroups per our already performance we'll learn our casp results at the probably late june july

091like look at his crunch scrunchy face at me come on have faith in the cde so i i would say that that like we we felt that we felt that that the work that we did you mean like that was actually probably our greatest level of growth this year was our subgroups if you know looking at that final i ready report um we did do a deep dive which we're talking about our summary goals today and so each site reviewed their their cohort data which is like traveling from grade to grade same group of students as well as looking at our subgroup data and our mark across the board is a growth level of you know somewhere between three and five percent you know three percent being where we want to be that includes our

092subgroups um and what we're really uh looking for and what we've talked about as as a leadership team and with the ed leadership teams is is really looking at that cohort grade to grade growth and then within those cohorts subgroups as well too the great thing is is that we put the data systems in place that are necessary to have that data at our fingertips and then we have structures of assessment that are now in place in order to do so and then like that information not only travels as a group right within our reports but also on the individual level for personalized learning um so that's you know silviano if think that ad there but like that's that's where we want to go and to answer your question we don't we don't necessarily distinguish

093our subgroup growth from our such and then you know furthermore we we do compare our subgroup to state you know comparatives and and we're very much outperforming state averages when it comes to our subgroup performance as well so i also want to add that um this year with the summer school all of our unduplicated students were invited to summer school any other comments from the board thank you all so much okay moving on to the district goals summary dr johnson got that clicker it's just a test drive all right um good evening uh tonight we're going to uh present on the goal summary um uh thank you the board of education uh our principals our educational leadership teams last year we worked together in order to create our district-wide goals um we aligned that with

094lcap as you've seen like in making that all these plans work together that's why we also hold our single plans for our school sites as well as our lcap it's all one in the same um for a unified uh direction of the district um we've been giving progress reports uh where we've been whether it be through our equity and inclusion action plan benchmarks or our progress reports on goal summary that occurred in january and then our i ready uh presentations as well this is just a very global view of the summary of those goals so uh in summary our you know our district has been successful this year despite the challenges of covid and such um our academic achievement does meet the pre-covered 2018-2019 levels if you were to take one thing from this is

095that you know through all the turmoil we came out of this achieving at the level that we were achieving prior to covid um most school districts in our state and nationally cannot say that um and so we're very proud of that community effort efforts by our staff and and our students and our families um we're going to you know continue to focus on uh growing our inclusion initiatives um we do think the reason we've been so successful in our subgroup performance is because we've taken a focus through inclusive practices and intervention and establishing targeted benchmark data having an understanding of awareness of the performance of our students i think has been a great strength of the district team and our our teachers and school sites uh and as to demonstrate the cde i think we're

096going on our third year running that they're going to be delaying the dashboard which is the statewide assessment performance levels so again to really to understand how to support students you have to know where you're at and it seems that that we as a state have been struggling to do that yet hermosa beach um is continuing to be transparent with its data publicly publish on a trimester basis um and you know establish that baseline for our students and then finally we have also you know been in the middle of a major construction project measure s is on its way to completion august 2022 will be the final touches of hermosa view and we will officially be with our three site plan here are our three goals these are the overarching equity and inclusion culture of

097excellence and financial stewardship everything that we do is guided by these principles and the goals that are subject to them in the area of culture of excellence our goal was to improve academic achievement from the trimester 3 i ready benchmark performance what you see there is our iready assessments it's 78 percent and 76 percent you mean like in comparison the i ready trimester three we've maintained um our fnp assessment uh testing will be completed by june 10th um and we'll have that data available for the board then um and then the achievement goal um will be presented so our next year's goal because we have established that baseline now we feel confident that we know where we're at where we're headed and that will be presented in our 22-23 goal summary so the next presentation

098next was to improve our system of professional development and implement a strategic plan for it as you can see there is a breakdown of our professional development strategic plan dates as well as how we went about utilizing our our time in a strategic manner to improve teacher collaboration below you'll see all the various areas that were focuses of training or deep dives into training one of our most intensive work was working with the fanta sentinel benchmark reading assessment system again going back to making that foundation of reading and understanding how our children are reading and also helping our teachers understand how to support those children and then we train them in the tool level literacy intervention which is a small group reading intervention which we are continuing in our implementation process um it is um

099the board had an opportunity to see it happening at hermosa vista and we're continuing to expand that practice out going into next year finally um we looked to coming off of the covet year we were looking to rebound and to expand or increase our classroom programs we were highly successful in this thanks in part to our hermosa beach education foundation and hvpto along with all of our various community sponsors there's a list of all the various electives that were brought in just highlight one math in the real world which was taught by danica brown and brought real real life a real world college and career experience to a math class they had for example ceos from companies including marlin equities come and present to them and other various projects that took place in the class

100we secured multiple grants and donations to fund professional development summer school cova testing employee wellness and then as i think a good product about like the you know promoting our culture of excellence our parents rated the school district 32.9 which is considered great on the net promoter score oh that's that's me actually at the st patrick's day parade look how cute that kid is oh cutie all right um our equity and inclusion initiative was focused on to reach our subgroup students and to support them with academic achievement um through intensive intervention as well as providing social emotional wellness to our students recognizing what they were coming out of during covid um we also uh in part we worked with ucla center x in order to work on culturally responsive teaching practices make our campuses more

101responsive to our students so therefore again like focus more on who we are teaching i mean like and how we can best meet their needs uh we had stipended positions where we call the responsive practice specialists they were amazing one of your employees of the year heather meyer was one of them and there are some of the activities that they were participating in to roll out some school-wide themes and activities and then finally we are very proud of our equity dashboard um if you haven't seen it please visit it on hbcsd.org uh we're we're the only dashboard that we know of um uh the california department of education is i think still trying to get theirs going with respect uh so um and this is a trimester-based system where we uh report on our achievement

102for all diversity and inclusion as well as social emotional wellness with measurable data about our progress as a district towards these goals again a major focus of the equity and inclusion initiative was targeted intervention for our students focusing on tier 1-3 interventions which is i mean like intensive versus universal interventions in the classroom there you can see the percentage of students that are performing below grade level and math and before below grade level in reading and then we look forward to our fontesim panel reading results and there is a number of students that are participating in our various interventions offered for our students finally a social emotional wellness intervention was of this work um there you see reports of our panorama survey data and comparison data from the prior year uh uh thank you to

103the board and to the education foundation we continue to bring back our two counselor system i think we're seeing the fruits of that and how we again met the moment considering our fte offering prior to coven uh and all the various programs they've brought forward the school-wide programs that we've introduced is such a wide variety you know from uh sandy hook programs like start the day with hello all the way to an executive functioning group or of course you see there the bike safety video produced by our miracosta students just all components towards wellness that i really do i'm very proud of this work that we've done and we were recognized for this work with the california pivotal practice award and one of 21 schools i think in l.a county school districts in la county

104in the area of financial stewardship our goal was to attempt to return our enrollment to the 2019-2020 levels um while we were not successful in reaching uh uh pre-2019 2020 levels um i do think that we've made substantial gains in our enrollment progress as the board learned last last board meeting we have now surpassed our data analytics projections decision insight that provides us projections they projected our ceiling was 1253 and our current projected enrollment is 1260 um and uh that that actually says there's actually dated information 75 students on interdisciplinary we're now up to 83. complete uh construction view this is you know a major undertaking you know it's you could say that measure s has been a decade-long uh venture and thank you to the hermosa beach residents something that's really special just about

105measure us that i reflect upon is that the people involved we're talking about multiple generations of hermosa residents that have been involved in this um and we're really looking forward to our ribbon cutting ceremony on august 25th at 1 pm um invites will be going out shortly august 18th is the completion date and that will also be the completion of the measure s project there you see there a great picture me and the crew that's actually i was i was working with a hammer just because like we got to get this thing done yeah every hammer counts i mean like they told me to leave the project because i actually created a scheduled delay by how bad my work was but um every everything price so we're we're on target um for completion um the

106three site strategic plan was presented to the board back in february um and we'll continue to make those staffing adjustments as we move through the summer um and our uh i think we have like this like very complicated moving plan thank you paula finally also in financial stereo shippo is continue to expand our community and business partnerships um with local non-local organizations we're we are blessed with just a wealth of uh relationships and um we have a we have a little you know philosophy in the district office so you know show me the money we go out there and we hustle for that money um so we secured a number of grants there you can see some of those dollar amounts of grants that were secured we're particularly proud of the professional development grant that

107we secured to ensure a third day of professional development at the start of each school year for the next five years as well as summer school intercession uh with the the elope grant that we literally hustled the state to increase our allocation um to secure summer school for indefinitely um and again special thanks sylvia as well too for our partnership with star to make sure that we were eligible for that grant hbf is is continuing to have their having a banner year um and just that the amount of effort that goes into the fundraising like we just cannot do it without them uh thank you for the residents who give and then we have been in the process of exploration for a proposal um considering a tech turf solar bond um and you know again

108aligning ourselves with the 21st century everyone is very well aware of a drought the increase of the cost of living particularly for things like electricity and making sure that our campuses are the most efficient and also that we have the best facilities and the best technology for our students you at this time i'll take questions so many things the best little beach city has going on uh questions from the board so just in terms of what then um just so if we have some feedback or comments or how do we want to just i had a couple just curiosity questions like why we might have moved some words around is now the time we want to talk about that are we going to read that is the next uh the next board discussion is for

109the 22-23 goals i believe it's what you're referencing um so this would uh be primarily just questions or discussions on the summary that you just saw for the 21-22 goals i don't have any questions but um you know it takes a village so thank you to you know everybody from jason on down for making this all happen that's a lot of stuff that we we got done so thank you thank you team effort yep great job thanks just echoing that i i think it's really impressive under the circumstances coming out the year we came off of opening as early as we did you know rebounding as quickly as we did and still not just rebounding and surviving but you know really advancing the district whether it be with our dashboards with our equity and inclusion

110initiatives um with you know choosing new advanced fantastically rigorous curriculum uh you know we've been we haven't just made it through we're we're thriving growing and getting better uh as well so kudos to you and the whole team yeah just for perspective i mean i sit on a different a charter school board also and this is not the report that they are giving to us about how students are academically performing in their school district so it is a real struggle and so you know great hats off to our families and communities and students and and teachers and everyone that really you know got us back into school quickly and and stayed on on on task yeah ditto one one square mile of excellence uh just like all the way around only about that point four

111yeah you're welcome yeah at 1.4.4.4 is not bad either um i think you're just getting kudos from the board jason to you and your team and please relay that to the staff um about all the great work that's gone in this year it's a nice way to cap off the air knowing that we we just soared through these goals great team effort thank you and and just we're grateful and for the support of the board um for i know i'm up for the next presentation but i was going to uh return to the diocese with permission just for working in groups is there a powerpoint in that or you just want to have the conversation off there we'll project the uh sorry we'll project like the goal summary and then i'll talk about process and

112then just turn it over the board got it my discussion moving on to superintendent report r-57-2122 the 22-23 goal proposal thanks maggie so um i i'm gonna just explain a little bit about the process and then i'm gonna turn over the board for questions comments and feedback and we should very much consider this a working session of the meeting um the uh we began work on planning for next year uh you know september 2021 so uh the focus and the adoption of the board's goals and uh 2122 was to create a foundation for a three to five year plan that we were looking beyond just the annual year and recognizing that many items were ongoing in order to so to speak get legs um uh with that said um starting with our board workshop going

113as far back as uh january we began to articulate um revisions and tweaks to these goals in order to take us the next annual year um in order to make sure that it kind of has quentin put like that like that we're continuing to advance the ball when it comes to our goals and not staying in the same spot um so we have been collecting feedback from a variety of places and so going back to a lot of this work is also aligned with our lcap and how we collect data whether it be from the california healthy kids survey the net promoter score the panorama surveys our ed leadership teams which is our grade level leaders with our principals our leadership team administration and then also feedback from the board from workshops and board meetings

114um through that we um then took uh feedback from our most recent workshop and then with a survey was created for the board in order to collect feedback about the current goals and how to advance them uh the superintendent me took that feedback and combined with our data in order to refine the 21 22 goals into the 22-23 goals this is being presented to the board today as a draft it is only a draft and really uh me putting it together is just a vehicle to move the board forward in order to like articulate a draft the the steps in the process is today the board started this evening the board should take this time in order to look through and provide comments and feedback which i'm just going to work on the active document

115as the board is discussing and i'm also here to answer any questions like this is the the district schools but we've tried to also make it a process where your feedback has been interactive with the staff and community feedback if as well too um then from there i'll take and create another draft and like and present at the board via board update the board will provide feedback there and then we'll come back together on june 27th in order to see another iteration based off of that feedback in the next draft um from there the board will again provide feedback and refinement and then we will look to have a final draft present to the board for adoption at our july 12th meeting um and that will be our process you can see that like this

116is like a train that is running with our lcap as well too but we pretty feel pretty confident based off of the feedback that we've received and some of the uh alignment with the board that we got from its feedback and with our goals that the direction within the lcap particularly with expenditures is pretty consistent um alongside but like all those adoptions are pretty much taking place at the same time um so we like our process we think this is a good thing and thank you to the board for uh continuing to help us to work in alignment with district goals in the lcap so at this time i'm going to turn it over to maggie in order to facilitate discussion and i'm here to answer any questions the board may have about this draft

117of goals thank you thank you uh and again thank you for taking the board's direction on this uh and all the feedback we gave you back early on this year and being so thoughtful with this document really excited to dive into it um so for the board we have there's i think there's an overall conversation to have and then uh we can go section by section on this um off of the three different areas so i'd like to start just at the top with overall impressions of of um what jason laid out in terms of process or how it just feels in terms of the goals being laid out so we can start broad and then get get narrow does anyone have any thoughts let me start off yeah remember i i like my first

118impression when i you know first saw this was i i like it um it's it's it's got a large measure of continuity with what we've been doing and you don't want to be radically changing your goals year to year hopefully you're you're setting some long-term goals and there's some consistency and i see that here but look we're all still almost done measure s and we've got a you know some of our major goals are going to be moving along and i like you know how uh you know right away i think it's thinking about the legacy thinking about community alumni uh and state-of-the-art facilities i think that's a great kind of uh subtle transition in progress yep yeah i would second what quentin said with just i i really dug the word legacy and just

119how that kind of shifted i just that was really um a great word choice personally i think thesaurus did you well on that one um my my one question would be um just curious why equity fell off the um the second bubble and just what if there was a reason behind that parallelism come on they're one word each yeah so that's okay but i think it might be that's fair there's been discussion from various stakeholders um uh and um in our groups because we've asked feedback from all groups about that including conversation and feedback from the board as well too about the the placement and order of goals well i i do agree and i we feel that no goal takes precedence over the other as a staff um but there there was feedback that

120we should be leading with the culture of excellence and that doesn't diminish the focus on equity and inclusion but rather just sets the tone the culture of excellence for all we can put a pin in it yes any other top line i know i just have some yeah one more thing top line um no nothing further beyond what uh clayton and jen said i agree i like the simplicity of you know the one words um the the word legacy i think is really strong uh of what's here um they're also in alphabetical order the other reason to switch up the order unintended but a good point a very good point uh i i might fall on my sword over legacy i'd have such a visceral reaction to it um she's [Laughter] why well lucky for

121you all i uh stephen and i were able to talk about this document stephen they really appreciate all the thought you put into it before going to europe and um legacy in stevensworth on this were historic and backwards looking and so potentially using an alternative one word header like foundation might be something more in there that allows us to talk about level setting with how we do um facilities and community um i actually really like stewardship just as a word but maybe it's not inspiring enough stephen you're totally wrong i'm just kidding so anyways i think there's so as i actually totally agree but stewardshipper no that legacy has to be backwards looking it's far it's completely forwards looking that us now are leaving the legacy for those coming we're building a legacy after we're

122building legacy for those coming after us i am i'd be happy and maggie you yeah legacy might be an area i think we need to come back and talk a little bit further about choices around equity and inclusion you know there might be a bigger conversation can you have inclusion without equity um on that but we can we're going to put a pin in some of these things and just yep come back and refine okay uh then moving into this first goal here off of culture of excellence which i guess would now just be excellence so so uh if you if you look at the way because like this is the document that we do use and we do post and so if you look is um the the banner right is one words but

123the the goals and their names are actually still retain culture of excellence equity and inclusion and then legacy sorry sorry uh legacy is is still singular don't apologize it's good um okay so let's dive in maybe we could do a foundation of legacy um okay culture of excellence um i know for me i love that we're putting in some some measurables off of these here um any other dives in that we want to take off of culture of excellence just to clarify in the percentage there's been a lot of discussion about achievement goals just like it's like you know why three percent so there is there are other documents where we go deeper and we share with the board there are some refinements we're still making because we have some data that's still coming in

124with the off the fmp but each site or yeah each site has uh individualized goals which have been shared with the board um those documents aren't secret but like there there's depth to them so we can either review those at a later time or continue to discuss that the three percent is like the 50 000 foot view right where we looked at all of our data across the board we looked at all the cohorts and based off of our rate of growth you know and like what is uh ambitious yet also meaningful and what we what we came up with is is that that that falls within a three to five percent average of where we're hoping for growth particularly actually with our subgroups that's that is our major aim so um that's you know

125you could say like well jason like where you know where's the fall individually like it you know in some cohorts like we're looking at more on the three percent side of growth based off of that cohorts remember a grade level class is like such a specific group of kids um so we can you know take a deeper dive the board would like as well too those documents are available just i want to play off of what you were just talking about the three percent i get that you know there's a thousand different ways you could measure uh academic achievement or slice it and dice it so this is pro this could very well be the best way um i'm wondering about like you know one of the things that we talk a lot about you

126guys present to us a lot about are things like percentage of kids at or above grade level or you know and you know in so i wonder is there a an intentional reason for not using that say or saying that look we want to make sure there's that for the for the cohorts that are most at risk whatever that they're being raised up a certain amount like what what you're thinking for choosing you nailed it and a lot of it has to do with with you mean like goals are as valuable as the people that are trying to reach them and that who is that that's our students and our staff right at the end of the day you mean like and our staff are the ones that are in particular i mean paying attention

127to it and we hope as we create more of a goal culture that students through personalized learning will be better brought in with their own goals but we're starting somewhere and so the focusing on a rate of growth i mean like removes the factor of every cohort is so different the unique part about hermosa is is though it's district it really is also like one school and as a district you can see these like wider averages you mean like across the district to create norms whereas the difference between two different grade levels that may be parallel like second and third grade we see some pretty substantial differences between them so a three percent average based on the cohort is actually more meaningful because um this might get like a little too uh labyrinthy but what

128we're really chasing is not just like oh and third grade kids will you know increase by three percent it's third grade kids will increase three percent from their baseline at the beginning of the year and we're confident enough in our assessment process now that we know what that is it's across the board known so when those kids take their diagnostic assessment when they take their fmp we're looking for a three percent growth rate from there until the end of the year based off that baseline so that's that it's really moving more towards a personalized look at the learning of our students can i just make sure i uh so if my kid is starting third grade you know they haven't absorbed most of the third grade curriculum obviously right so i would see i would

129expect to see them grow a lot in the course of third grade so three percent doesn't sound like a lot of growth in the course of third grade i mean i may be misunderstanding what that metric means yeah so if a student so um a student at second grade right you mean like after completion of that you mean like you know their mastery of say the ela standards i mean like in like their student is performing at 85 percent mastery of the standards right so our expectation would be is that that student i mean like the following year you mean like you would achieve at 88 mastery based off a rate of growth i mean like rather than saying like well our students are going to all be you know at 80 percent i mean

130like you know that's what we hope to be because we looked at our statewide i'm sorry our our district-wide average and our district right average was 78 percent at ela so three percent off of that is you know we really hope that all students get to 81 what we're looking at is from a more individualized lens and it's about growth rather than just overall achievement because our test score is already the top five percent in the nation right we we know that we are you mean like one of the best school districts in california so now it's how do we get better okay thank you it's great to much greater good thank you well i would agree with what i was i was also curious as to why we would take it from the beginning

131of the year not the end of the year so there is the summer slide and also too like you're you're meeting students where they're at so if you you could no i mean just the base like the baselines again i would just why wouldn't we measure our growth from the end of the year we want to like three percent so so um a student you know let me you could right you you could but again it goes back to like i'm a teacher in a classroom right and if i had you know very little assessment systems in place i might look back to that cast score and be like okay like that's my that's the baseline that that is what we're trying to work off of however also too like we have you know it

132um diet uh i see what you're saying i i get what you're saying you mean like that i think just it's something to think we don't have to answer it tonight but i just think like understanding what where we're going to pull the data from at what time of the year and i didn't realize i wasn't reading this as an individual i was reading it like individual student growth i was reading it as like um where it's you know let's say 70 85 in language arts and and where we're gonna move our whole our whole uh all students that is that is still true and and i'm sure i'm over explaining right now that is still true and like i'm only pointing out that like we have diagnostic benchmark data that we track during the

133course of the year and i already produces projection right so like through the diagnostic we can project you mean rate of growth of students i mean like and that should be three percent over right their performance based on that mastery that's what i ready normally says is like an ab like a like an average rate of growth i already can produce an average rate of growth but to your point though yes a student at the end of the year mastery should be performing you know on average three percent greater than their prior year that is our goal and then my other thank you i still think it's something we should just look into like when when do we wh what part of the year we want to take this data from um and then my

134other question would be um around data just oh i i'm sorry i had it and i just lost it oh i just think of and it probably goes down to um equity and inclusion the the continual improve no sorry the target and support and improve achievements so i i look towards i have some questions about that so we can get to that one this goal also relates to that goal to me that's correct yeah so i i my concern is that if we have a population of students uh ells that are still fairly below you know not not doing as well as other students are that three percent is not really moving the needle for them so i just feel like maybe that's not enough of a like maybe again like what clinton was saying

135it's like shouldn't we look at it via subgroups also and make other kind of uh what i would say is like it's it's also purposeful that targeted subgroup achievement improvement is not is not in the equity and inclusion goal and this is focused on overall achievement i understand it's not i'm just saying i think we might want to consider adding that or or looking at how to add that or like have a you know so we're not looking at the third or fourth or fifth year of our ell students not making gains like i think that's but that's not accurate though our ul students are reclassifying and performing at a very high rate we did increase their achievement this year so it's not like that we're in a situation where ell students are dramatically underperforming

136okay maybe we should just look at that again because i'm not sure i'm seeing the same data you are okay yeah um but going back to the culture of excellence number one it's um the the noodle i would have would be look at the first bullet point and maybe adding things like looking at best practices um as well can you repeat that for us just a little bit so we're taking notes sure i'm just like on culture of excellence point number one bullet point number one we say establish a vision an action plan for excellence in science through committee curriculum and coaching slash training but i think it's also important that we go and look at best practices in establishing a robust science program like in the in the neighborhood that we live in in

137areas the schools that are doing great work in science and in k-8 could we just you know again for the sake of like language and and brevity you mean like just that is noted and implied in the work of the committee i'm not sure it is so i'm just asking if someone can make sure we work because we're all the people that are in charge so like we'll we'll we'll imply that right like in the work of the committee just for the sake of brevity within the goals okay it's just i feel like it does require then you know sub time and things to consider going out so i just don't want it to get like it's in a committee but it's just it's not accounted for with money part of our work so we

138we have been budgeting that money in regard to planning for for science and and professional development time and so uh what i would say is just that the jessica bledsoe and i who plan to work the committee together like that is part of our plan to visit science programs great that's all i had in that section uh stephen's contributions i want to make sure everyone here students that we're missing the nps scores out of this in terms of talking about how we um measure student experience um and so there should be targeted goals around increasing um the skull the scores from good to uh great and possibly even to excellent um so it might not be a year thing but i do have feedback about that i would say from a staff point of view

139like i do have concern about using the mps as a metric you mean like in a in an evaluative way i mean like i think it's good information for us i think it's important i mean like that we reflect upon it and work towards that but to evaluate mean staff based off of an mps survey i mean like i just i i have some concern starting with that not all parents participate in the survey the survey is self-select and so there's there's flaws with it i mean like it's good data but i don't know if it's necessarily evaluated data for goals for the district and for our staff well take it down as a bullet point for discussion and we can circle back around to it before that we're taking notes on everything that's being

140talked about um anything off of student experiences and professional development this group i like the second vote they're the identify and develop areas of learning supported by community partnerships for science technology engineering art math like that hints at it doesn't say it super explicitly but i think that is could capture you know saying hey we want you know our programs to be focused around uh you know excellence in you know where do we live we live close to spacex we live close to the ocean we want to be uh you know we want our we want i i think there's scope and and for themes that like could really kind of um both be real and be great for kind of uh building an identity uh around what we're trying to be excellent in you

141know uh i think i really actually like this bullet you had on the front page which is signature programs and that's what i'm really kind of wondering here is uh you know and this could be this could be frankly partly a board's responsibility too but i would love you know ideas from uh leadership in the district around what are those signature programs we want to be good at math we want to be good at english we want to be good at science but is there like is there another twist on that which is when we say science we're going to like be just amazing and be the best i don't know k to a district in uh you know around this aspect of science because we happen to be so close to the aerospace industry

142or the space industry or the or amazing ocean uh opportunities i don't know so i i just encourage you guys to sort of see what signature programs could be turned into because i think that's what that second bullet hints at sylvia wasn't there development once upon a time of like 90254 curriculum like there was something that was specifically looking at like the environment and like everything of 90254 right um okay a good zip code it's a great zip code um okay any other things off of culture excellence right now we can come back to it if there are equity and inclusion top line pieces off the goal it's not numbered um peter can you shut your door if the beeping is coming from in there okay to go back to nps stuff why is it

143appropriate for this as opposed to student experience in programs so we have nps here as one of our ways to monitor school climate so just curious why why it's appropriate here but not office student engagement and programs yeah so so monterey i so you and i both had the pleasure of sorry i cleared my desk so i was nervous about the question um uh you okay aaron um so uh the um you and i both have read steven's feedback i mean like and what stephen stated is that he wants to create a numerical goal right you mean like that so like we're setting a target and i i agree that mps's are great as a mosaic right you mean like or multiple measures or like a dashboard but setting the singular target based off of

144the nps i think is problematic okay so to answer your question is not so worried about the rating why are we why would we use it here around dei but not for students i think that it'd be it's fine and are appropriate if you want to introduce that but that's such as far as like why i because we didn't at the time the irvs were written that there was no feedback about that incorporating yeah um other questions thoughts off of equity inclusion i would love to see under bullet point number three a program like pro uh thoughts and program around digital literacy because i have a strong belief that our a lot of our social and emotional wellness trauma is due to digital devices and social media and i think that programmatically there's a lot

145of great new programs coming out that support digital literacy in in schools and i i think that might fit under that um unless you see it in a different place no i don't i don't gen and to piggyback off of that through the wellness council that has been a topic of discussion and about incorporating that through those programs so i would say that is absolutely aligned um it will likely be in the form of school-wide programming and not necessarily embedded within the curriculum i'm not saying it won't be down the road um but i i i would say to eback on to you that uh calling that out would be very much an alignment with the feedback that we've received and the direction that we plan to take i just want to put a plug-in

146for potentially making a bold direction and curriculum because i think there's some really good curriculum out there and i bet we have some amazing staff that might want to teach something like that um along with a school-wide thing i just think sometimes it can be talk to okay like you can it's just gonna a poster is gonna go up on the wall and it might not be take you know this is a deep dive i'm like i think we need to start deep diving with kids and really understanding what we have in front of us with these digital devices yeah absolutely and and um could we say that this year would be an exploration process thank you i think um just as context you know i i started off on the board a year and

147a half ago kind of a learner and observer of what was going on with regard to dei and partly thanks to my estimate colleagues have become a big advocate for it one of the things that's made me a big advocate uh besides it's just fundamentally the right thing to do is is jen's point from a few minutes ago that it really supports culture of excellence right having a healthy welcoming learning environment is conducive to high academic performance right and and uh so so i think these these two things are closely linked and i i i wonder if there's anything we can do in how we talk about it that makes that clearer that you know that so what i'm wondering is you know should should should some of the language here so one of the

148goals here be something about you know creating a healthy learning environment you know to to support facilitate you know excellence in education or something like that and and because that's i think what resonates a lot with a lot of parents that i speak to is that you know what equity and inclusion is about it it's not you know uh it's not about special interest groups it's about creating an environment that is healthy for all the kids right and that's something i think everybody can get behind so i'm just wondering if we can play with the language here that makes that i think the link to academics clearer and that sort of that holistic environmental um part of this clear yeah it would be great if the board could um work together to wordsmith the spirit

149of that because i think that's more language than it is actually like uh sure action um and uh just to circle back as well too uh because i'm now looking at the equity inclusion goal uh we did set an academic target gen it was because we looked at our cohort data and it was about reducing the number of students that are performing below grade level um and that's that's how we generate that number sorry that just escaped me while we were having that discussion so go ahead sorry i was just curious when we um talk when you know we look at what sorry when the staff is looking at what they are for next year and how they're planning do they take a look at that information and make their make their goals as a

150grade level or as a staff or a based off of that information um can you um be a little more specific on which information so you had hyperlinked two um pieces of information that were deep dives from each staff and their goals and my question is i'm not i just i'm not i'm not you know at the presentations or how they're looking at the data or how they're being talked through that those those goals that you saw came from the teacher leadership teams and their principal yeah so my no that was clear and evident my question was were they presented all the data were they looking at the california healthy kids survey and the data that we're seeing were they looking at how the subgroups are doing and then identifying those students in their classroom

151and making and having conversations i i just wasn't that you know i'm not there you're i'm not sure if you're there so how they're giving direction on that the principles work with their staff in regard to those conversations so i i mean like i can report back from you know again what that is i can tell you what we're told you mean like in regard to our principal means we need the principles regularly and they work with their ed leadership teams and they're looking at the i-ready data i mean like the scl and california healthy kids survey data i'm not saying it is exclusive but it was exclusive from this conversation there was more of a focus on achievement and our various our three major benchmarks f being one of them and the casp which

152we're still waiting on that data um so i i can't speak to that level the the the plan if you look forward though is that they would have access to individual student data at the start of the year because what we've done with powerschool and the data storing and the dashboard and like so all that information is available now and then the beginning of the year also begins those diagnostics so they're already well aware of those students that are performing below grade level they have the metrics of where those students are performing below grade level and we're building off of a goal culture of reducing those students that are below grade level by three to five percent depending on what tier either far below or below standard my my only challenge would be just to

153conf continuously um overlay some of this information on those just academic conversations is i feel like they just don't go they're just not in a silo anymore you know it's i i feel like i used to just talk about it as academics and not really ever think about the social and emotional sure and now they just they they're just so intertwined and i i really feel like again i'm not there so these conversations may be happening but i would just challenge us to bring those forward quarterly or you know just that hey you know what's going on with our students academically and social emotionally and how they're they're you know we have the data so that's why that's a really good point i mean like and you know we've we have laid a focus on

154achievement levels i mean you know um for a lot of different reasons right and so i think that's a really good point we can take that feedback back um the panorama data and chk studies shared with our staff particularly panoramas we did it twice um so we can start to you know look at the lens we do compare with the prior year um but setting goal culture around that um is a good question it's more i'm looking at it like if i'm looking at like california healthy kids let's just say and you take you know how many sixth graders do we have what's our quantity of sixth graders about 150. so 150 sixth graders out of 156th graders 17 of them felt hopeless and chronic sadness and now if we overlay that with you know

155the percentage of kids that are you know far below basic or you know you know that aren't doing as well it's like there is a correlation i i do believe and if and so that's where it's like i feel like we need to be like reminding staff just like and teacher you know and anybody just like what do we need to do it's not just like like let's try to get them to learn math some more it's like how do we love them yeah into into loving math and we agree and that's a really good point and we can continue to look at comparative analysis of that data and like how we can deliver that to staff in a meaningful not overwhelming way yeah i think we have all the right people and the to

156do this i'm just thinking i just want to know if our approach is just considering these things one of those one of those things is that both principles are bringing on board positive behavior support intervention and school-wide systems um you know some people think that it's you know it's just behavior correction which is not what it is it just it creates a different conversation and proactive behaviors about reinforcing positive student behavior and doing it in like a targeted systematic way across the school um so both sites are implementing that um now i'm like can i like because it's part of the wellness console conversation was a good conversation about marrying that to like our programs like play works um and positive initiatives and human engagement on the playground campuses and how these things need to

157work hand in hand and so right you mean like in you know the prior year like there was a focus on our uniform discipline policy right and like making sure that that was clear and concrete whereas you know i would say that the the direction of our current principles are focused on implementing a school-wide behavior intervention plan and and more importantly onboarding their staff to implement it so i think that we're chasing the right thing and i i definitely think you bring up a really good point about taking that number off the chks and then also looking at that in relation to the far below basic students that's a that's a very valid point and an interesting way of looking at the data okay then on to legacy or also known as stewardship i'm going

158to throw out an idea that kind of it doesn't directly pertain to this but jason and i were dialoguing off of a potential grant that was out there for something called community schools and community schools don't apply to hermosa beach underneath like the federal and state definition of a community school because you have to have 50 of your population that's meeting an unduplicated account right you have to have a very vulnerable population to like meet the the eligibility to get the money that goes along with it but the concept of a community school is what we're doing and i think so i want to throw this out into the goals conversation because i think it's language that we should start building towards because it acknowledges the need for us to have really strong partnerships with

159a variety of organizations that shows that public schools can't be all the things to all the people all the time right like we can't be a public health agency we can't do all of these things it requires us to have partnership and so as we move and if if we were to move into a community schools framework where we acknowledge how much we rely on partnerships i think it does a great service to our teachers to say like be a teacher right like let us figure out how to support you so you can teach it allows us just to acknowledge all of the supports that go into making a great system so something to think about it doesn't come with money um because we're not eligible but there are really great frameworks that are out

160there for how you think about a community school in terms of the pillars that go into it so i just wanted to throw it out there as we start thinking about goals work of how we also might want to talk about language about the work we do goals conversation vision conversation right there um but i do like how we started putting some other targets in place here for the five year master plan um and our increase of enrollment other thoughts off of stewardship legacy sorry i mean yeah no i agree um going back to the little bit of the conversation before um i'm not opposed at all to i like stewardship as well i was just disagreeing with the reasoning for changing legacy um was what i was my my point was about um i

161like i do like stewardship as well so i just wanted to throw that out and i would be happy to share you know because i'm the one that's trying to like synthesize everything and yes i did find legacy out of soros.com um so uh just about the the the why because we've been participating in a lot of conversations lately with our student alumni and and and how i we arrived there i could go now no i think yeah go ahead you don't have to go into it no you don't you don't need to go into it the word legacy the wrong choice um okay i like either i like either but i do like it too i don't know it resonated with me it didn't mean backwards it didn't mean going backwards that was stephen's

162yeah um what about off the bullet points here which are numbered yeah no i import no i like i like the bullet points as well i think you know looking back um particularly around enrollment you know as we were looking at the last presentation you know as we've seen as the time has gone on over the last couple of years of what's really kind of realistic on enrollment i think we'd all agree that we set a goal that wasn't realistic in hindsight you know we thought it was at the time to get back to 1345 yeah or 13. whatever you yeah yeah we were actually just counting the ada so we were looking at 13 uh 1306. 13 but 1345 was what it was yeah but you know let's not look backwards people let's look

163forward exactly yeah so i i think that um you know setting a three different side that's a reasonable i think achievable goal and i feel like that much more is something we can truly strive for and i think we can get there as we continue to grow outreach permits um programs t well tk will kind of automatically get us there a little bit yeah um but uh i i think as we continue to develop that i like the look at the fiber master plan we're coming out of a little bit measure s was a six year plan obviously went further back than that um but it's been now six years i think yesterday uh might have been to the day um so um you know to look at five years and going out now that

164we have a three site plan you know we're going into the you know well i think we'll learn a lot next year so i'll be interested in refining this goal even further um a year from now because i think we we have certain expectations about how a three site plan will work but you never quite know until you actually do it um 100 i just like and and this has been a staff conversation a community conversation but you know it has to be acknowledged that we're probably the only district in california that has the setup and so this is you know within within our means right the how we're going to approach it i have no doubt that it'll evolve in the coming years to get it right yeah no totally you know that five-year

165plan will also continue to evolve going forward um i also like you know it seems like there's going to be state funds again and how we finish some of the other projects particularly at valley that we weren't able to get to and how we prioritized some different things we've been able to do pieces of that some of those pieces like the parking lot you know may not make more any sense to do how we're originally going to do it anymore so kind of looking at those pieces there um but these are really key points so i i like that bullet as well and then the community and business partnerships is always given um how we raise those those dollars for the the delta as we always talk about between what the state gives us even

166though the state is growing and it's more it's um as paul went through earlier it's still not enough uh not nearly enough so how we how we fill in that that gap and between grants and hbf and pto and everything else is always an important piece so i i think these are with whatever we want to call it um importing key goals thank you other thoughts off of uh stewardship this runs kind of countered what doug was just saying about like setting achievable goals i got a question about i mean you know having been in the district now whatever nine ten years um and been close to hbef and other fundraising efforts uh in this question in my head of like you know whether um this district can you know like whether or not there's

167a number of students and a structure and a plan that could uh you know alleviate our dependence on the generosity of of the parents and i i don't think that that's going to go away i think we live in a great community and parents are are eager and happy to support the schools but as you know when i put my finance hut on it feels like we're vulnerable if we're persistently sort of dependent on on that source of revenue and i i don't that may not be like a lot of it is out of our hands because it's driven by legislation and what the state will provide but i just i wonder if you know part of our legacy thinking should be you know how do we over three years five years hopefully mitigate this

168dependence on you know what is from you know been pretty consistent lately but isn't always guaranteed to be there in terms of uh parental funding yeah do you wanna take that jen no i was just gonna add to that and that it just um i'm not sure why the proposition didn't pass in manhattan beach but if there were either bond but if but if we're continually asking for for money for something and then we want to go and ask for a bo you know the community for a bond it's like it i think there might have been a reaction to that that's just a thought i i would just point out i mean like in regard to this is that um this what you're speaking to clinton really from my perspective i mean like there

169i don't believe that there is an enrollment number that will alleviate the dependency on ed foundation or the community's gender university as a whole because i think that includes measure s because of the nature of how we currently stand with the lcf funding there are districts that are near us that receive almost double per pupil per pupil student funding and this district could run without that parent community donation but it would have to do so without the enrichment that it has i mean like that we you know we see our fte numbers for you know what it would take to have five classes in a schedule right but you know we you know include almost an additional 10 fte for all the enrichment experiences which i agree with you that there should be a number

170that we can get to that the public school nature of public schools you mean like can provide those things um but there you know there is a problem um with funding and our congressman you know al murasuchi and and the south bay have been chasing this for years that it's just it puts us in our communities in this situation i'd just to provide a counterpoint to that i i think a manhattan beach is somewhere over the past 20 years that took like 500 million dollars in bonds that they've passed right the hermosa beach in its history has done uh less than 100 million in its entire history uh with our bond and then the bond that happened in 2004 or 2005. what was the gym the gym like 13 million 13 million and 59 for

171measure s so it's like 70 total so i think just in terms of how we talk about um school finances like i am loath to bring in any other district on terms of what it costs to fund an education for hermosa beach students and we are an underfunded district we cannot we we do not fund our students for what they need for a proper education and so like starting from that theory and then asking our community to like fund an education that actually meets the needs of students uh without relying on generosity of parents like is it is a calculus that i think like having parents donate money to try and fill a gap of what a education should be provided to students is entirely different than like well we're making all these asks of

172people like this is a community responsibility because it's these are our communities kids and we are not providing them with what i think should be a basic public service for them to be good citizens so like i think there's a different messaging calculus to talk about in terms of like how manhattan beach has looked at it what they've chosen to do with their funding how they choose to raise money and what's possible for hermosa beach um my two cents off of that question i have another question though that talks about marketing and in terms of how we talk about the permit program in light of california's declining enrollment as a state and the conversations and comments you've made jason that it does become um uh really important to have great a great product to serve

173people with and and people are competitive right so i think the more we think about hermosa beach schools as being a magnet school where we can bring in students from all over and they are attracted to the great work we do it's easier than us talking about permits right because it's not just about permits in we we provide a great service and we want to make sure we are providing the best education possible to kids who want it so i think there is some language working that we're doing in terms of of um talking about numbers of students who are in schools yeah i really like that um approach to it i think this is a really good way to to put it okay last thoughts on uh stewardship i'm not gonna let it go

174and i'm not um okay it would still be in alphabetical order as stewardship so it's fine with me uh thank you so much for starting off the conversation on this and picking up where we left off i think do you have questions on the board right now to before we finish brainstorming on this yeah we i mean like you know because like so i'll be tasked with you know writing an iteration of the draft from this feedback you mean like so um just as narrow as we can try to get or maybe a re-review of that would be helpful uh so at the 27th we'll be doing another dive off of this or you'll send it out prior to the 27th for us to do an up up down on well so i'm sorry off

175of this discussion we're gonna try to create some feedback off that we were kind of hoping that maybe it give me a give me a minute sure ford when we get through this process right here we're going to do consent and we're going to give everybody a five minute break to get some energy grab some water have another piece of coffee because we still have to get keyboard action yeah we we i think that i can create a draft off this i will say that the feedback has been broad you mean like so um i just hope that what we i come up with out of this you know meets all five people's um needs so yeah we're here every month on the month give you more food we gotta like run a school district

176as well too in august so we're really hoping you guys can pin this one down for us so as long as the board is not gonna take some wild leaps you mean like we can boardsmith and narrow all we want i i what i i think just for the sake of direction because keep in mind like your staff is planning right now and so i i think that just like it would be helpful if we could maybe kind of revisit right now like some of the feedback that was given so we have clarification because as much as i appreciate the process like we are in the reality of writing the yellow cap and signing dollars so i didn't hear anything off of this that was radical departure off of programs that you mentioned here maybe

177we could review those because i think at this point what's important is the staff's understanding of the board's feedback so like if sylvia's been taking notes from me so i i kind of would like to kind of go like point by point and make sure there's clarity um yeah over here sorry you're gonna do it you'll read it out i am yeah i can still be taking notes okay so what i hear for a growth target that that the board finds that you know a three percent growth target is is appropriate and accepts the school site's recommendation for those overall overarching targets so culture of excellence three percent and you're going to give us clarification if that was off of individualized personal growth or off of by cohort it is off of by cohort okay

178and we i hope cohort of each grade level is its own cohort so three percent performance by grade level and we are measuring and what you're going to come back to us after you think about where we want to start the measurement from for the baseline no that was just a misunderstanding in my part like that the baseline in the way that we're talking about it is off of final performance data for the the school year prior does anyone have for me three percent like enough is never enough but given everything that we have going extra three percent as a goal makes sense to me um are but we are not including subgroup in that in that three percent though are we subgroups are subgroups are the are part of that it's it's across the

179board and whole and then to address jen's point in equity inclusion we looked at it from a different vantage point for goal of reducing the number of students below grade level and that is that's in the same way cohort can only look at yeah far below basic to basically et cetera yeah i just would like to just get clarity that we're looking at the same data on those subgroups um yeah sylvia we took notes on that sylvia is going to provide the board um thanks sylvia uh our third trimester i ready presentation that uh demonstrated the growth of our subgroups um throughout the year this is the school year yeah and to know because sorry jenna or my inaudible as you're talking that one of the concerns of our principles and how we evaluate the

180ell is that our students redesignate so you actually were part of this for the equity inclusion stuff they re-designate so quickly that at the time that they're on grade level they've been redesignated so really the the subgroup that we've designated as the struggling subgroup is the first year english language learner students i mean like so there is a degree of expectation that they are performing below grade level and something to also keep in mind too is that subgroup population is so small that the state of california itself does not take data on it on the dashboard because it's statistically not irrelevant not those kids aren't which is really hard to set goals or measurements when you have cohorts that could be so wildly different in their needs okay just as long as we're looking at

181the same yeah follow up thank you thanks john okay what i have on um for establishing the committee just it's just making sure that there's acknowledgement that time is uh time for visiting um these the uh best programs but there's an acknowledgment that that is embedded in the work of the science vision committee thank you um and thanks for calling that option um there was feedback about needing an mpss an nps score data and i expressed concern from a staff standpoint about setting an achievement target or sorry yeah in a target goal on the nps score happy to have it as a factor but a measurement but establishing an actual target we view as problematic uh i'm not going to have steven's argument for him so he can have that on the 27th month but

182i think where i'm concerned on this is that we um and maybe it's just not written in here it's an implied but we don't know how students actually feel about the programs that we're putting out there so if we're talking about improving student experience not so much student outcomes but if we're talking about improving student experience we don't have a way that we're planning on measuring that uh so i guess that's where i am interested in making sure that we put something in there that allows us to show growth uh not just by programs but by student status family student satisfaction can the focus i think that that for us it's much more measurable and attainable if the focus is students and because it's not self-select like when we conduct surveys with students we conduct

183them in the house versus i'm sure you're aware of so your background like like self-select when it comes to survey data you mean like that there's no rule on participation so i think that the advantage of students not only is it more meaningful but it's much more measurable so that that is something that i think is very relevant and i would be yes or rather i just think it's important that we're looking at student experience yeah and just another place to look at it is in the california healthy kids survey because they call out you know information about is school really boring is what's meaningful participation is you know those kind of there is language in there that actually resonates with what i think kids would actually are thinking and if our goal is to

184like make that number less you know and like let them have a you know more schools more fun so we're looking at either um item two bullet point three or item three bullet point three as a as a place where maybe that some language or some goals can be incorporated around those bullets i think a conversation with your team about like what's the appropriate data that we collect to help us gauge whether or not we're being successful is important and i think like we have a lot of different metrics that we're already using so like whichever one we want to pick or whatever combination ones that we want to pick it'll just be helpful for us to see whether or not we're meeting these goals i i think that the feedback about trying to collect

185um feedback about student experience and measuring that the programs that we offer is great and and really where we need to head so i i we will we will come back to the board with with something substantial on that um on number two still under culture of excellence um i don't know if it's language change but like just we you know hear that you know building an identity um around the themes uh where what quentin stated i i do feel like that that is exactly where we want to head you know and some of the relationships we're trying to build so um we'll take a look at it for the language but we from a staff understand we totally concur on where we want to go and part of the work that we would like

186to test the science vision committee is about looking at our science program as a program about connecting our students and science to their community looking at like the same the an example being like the sand dunes project uh we're so close to the ocean and oceanography um biology physical science was feedback that we got from our high school alumni um the arrows yeah along with aerospace so that's that's where we want to go so that's just i want to reinforce that yeah yeah let's go 90254 curriculum well no i was saying i think the spirit your spirit the spirit you just articulated is what i was after as it's you know and i don't think it has to happen necessarily with the next articulation of the goals i think over the course of years it

187would be fantastic if we got better and sharper and clearer and you know to to use some of steven's language since he's not here developed a brand you know for what it is we're really distinctive at i think i i really again i really like the bullet you had around signature programs what is that signature program or programs that would distinguish our fantastic middle school from or and elementary schools from other really good elementary schools rather private elementary school yeah and middle schools and we've talked a lot sorry it came back to me we've talked a lot about experiential learning yeah um as being something and and that's something that we feel like that one of our science teachers has done a great job with hannah loath um and trying to trying to build that

188um if you're at our open house it even represented that okay i'm gonna move it down to inclusion the goals have been numbered just wanna make sure that's clear uh big improvement yeah no problem um jason my feedback on that one was probably a bit fuzzy so i just typed something out and sent it to you guys as as an example to help so that you weren't oh the number the numerical system or no no no okay like some some word i i think i just wanted to highlight i didn't say this earlier so awareness and capacity to me are good but i think they are secondary to trying to build a healthy environment and so that was my suggestion is that that first new numbered equity and inclusion goal be really clear and succinct

189about we're trying to build a healthy environment for all of our students or something like that yeah and that's helpful yeah and i think actually the third bullet number three partly captures it as well so i kind of brought it up underneath there as a suggestion that's that's that's very helpful yeah i get i would say like i just don't want us to water this down too much so i think i would put it more on the number three section than i would changing the language of diversity equity and inclusion i think you i i feel strongly that we need to keep some of that language we're in a drought so we're not going to water down anything for you um okay so uh i'm gonna keep on uh going really good uh the digital

190literacy and school-wide digital we will try to incorporate some language around that um and that was good feedback and we i that's very much aligned with the direction that we're trying to head and then we'll take a look too and just so on the page about uh we like the idea of trying to triangulate achievement data with our wellness data um i think that the equity dashboard is a step in that direction but i think jen kind of gave us a different dimension to look at it in that way um so we'll we'll try to explore maybe some language focus around that that's an interesting interesting point but we appreciated that and that's what we have for feedback for accurate inclusion okay okay i think legacy sorry stewardship sorry uh financial stewards i don't even

191know um is the one that maybe is the least concrete for staff aka me um we talked about the community schools piece but i may we may consider a little more direction on what that would be in the form of a goal suggestion was off of language and how we think about this so i don't know if it's a goal that that goes into it it's as we as we work to frame what we do can we go back to equity and inclusion for a second i just wanted to i didn't hear in the number three section anything about digital literacy you did i just missed it i'm sorry i'm getting tired jen we know you turned to a pumpkin after nine i know it's ten i'm like oh we gotta take a can i

192have a motion someone please so moved for how long 30 minutes in 30 months well i don't know i think we can power thank you and i i do appreciate the board's time and just you know we have a motion until 10 30 and it's been seconded by doug thanks doug i do appreciate the board's time and clarifying this it just helps make our work more concrete so i actually on on this school we i don't have substantive edits or changes to it based off the board's feedback would the board consider that accurate yeah we were mostly just vaguely rambling because it was late yeah it seemed like to me there were kind of two things to consider one was obviously the name yeah the second was the idea that maggie brought up about the

193how to market the permit program differently like the magnets magnet idea [Music] that was the other piece that the board seemed to like your hair is this fluffy dug it reminds me of the french cupid dolls thank you and we'll i believe we can move forward without knowing what the title of the goal is going to be thank you board okay i need a thank you so much to the team on getting that together really appreciate it we're going to move on to consent is there a motion i move that we prove the scent motions a second thank you christine do we have a any opposed member call aye board member cliff hi vice president clerk gardner aye president beauvoir monica hi all in favor for the moon okay um everyone given that jen has
