that is it we'll start without me I'm gonna try to see a nutshell [Music] well he came and he left okay you are now live on YouTube hey Leonard how are you good question if I win will you raise my insurance rates [Laughter] you're politically correct all right you are yeah so far president president Turnbull ready to begin turn this on how about that I'd like to bring to order this meeting of the board of education on October 13th 2022. if you are planning to attend via YouTube and would like to comment Please be aware that you may send your comment in writing to info ltusd.org before 12 pm on the meeting date and your comment will be read into the record please put public comment in the subject line let's move on to 1A

Pledge of Allegiance let's all rise I pledge allegiance to the power of Advanced to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice B Miss Chandler would you please take the role please State for the record if you are present president Turnbull present trustee Mansfield present trustee Riley president trustee Bannister present trustee Kemper present thank you two is there a motion to adopt the agenda I moved to adopt the agenda second we have a motion by trustee Mansfield to adopt the agenda a second by trustee Kemper with all those in favor please say aye aye aye all those opposed that motion carries and with that we will move on to number three conduct interviews for appointment to the board of education to fill trustee area 2 vacancy well I'd

like to say welcome to the two of you welcome Mr Carter and Mr Leonard um I mean I have returned sorry that was that was a great start of my day um it's um so wonderful to see two people step up and um trying to serve the public education system as you two just have so I thank you for being here um the way this is going to work we have nine questions in total you will each have two minutes to respond I will alternate between the two of you to to answer initially and trustee Mansfield will be giving you time warnings so um if are there any other questions before we begin on this our writing thank you good luck and I'm setting my timer so that goes off I don't mean to be

obnoxious I guess that just means that's two minutes I pressed two minutes there you go all right very good well um we'll start with you Mr Carter please tell us a little about your involvement or participation with Lake Tahoe Unified School District or any of our schools uh I have three daughters uh they all went through the school system uh in their entirety of K-12 except for the oldest when we came here when she was third grade um and I had interaction then as a parent and so on um we also taught our own child my wife has an education and um a master's in educational counseling so and then beyond that I my wife became a teacher here she retired two years ago so in some sense a lot of my involvement you might

say is second hand in that in that General way but yet it was a topic although a lot of the times around around the house as to you know how the school is doing or various aspects of that and by the way she was she retired in 21. um she was a special ed teacher um my own involvement in school beyond that in general not this Camp here was that I was the director of a foster home agency and then after I was that for five years I was a case manager with Therapeutic Foster children of which I spent a lot of time at schools in in either conferences with me with other people such as psychologists and psychiatrists as well as the school staff and people obviously the children four out of five times

had an IEP so I'm pretty well versed in those I would consider myself let me boost a bit uh in those areas I've dealt a lot with therapeutic who had DSM now it would be considered a dsm-6 diagnosis um I also incidentally when I was in my 20s it was kind of a fluky thing but for one year I was a teacher's aide for fourth grade in a public the grammar school on the coast but and I learned a lot there the you know a lot of lessons does that mean I got to quit I am sorry we're getting out the wrinkles okay thank you um Mr Heatherton would you respond also would you like me to reread the question I've got it here great um of course my involvement I've got three current students

in the system uh one that graduated um and myself I graduated here in 88 my both my sisters graduated here in 78 and 80. my father and father graduated from South Ohio in 58 and 60. so I've Got Deep Roots here um involvement with the schools I was on The Bijou site Council I believe it was seven to eight years ago that was for two I think three year stint um so getting some familiarity and um accepted the challenges of learning the acronyms asked for cheat sheets on that many times beyond that just lots of volunteering and School Board not School Board member Boys and Girls Club board member for I believe it was six years so I learned a lot from that and a lot of involvement with Dr tarwater at the time thank

you um question number two comes back to you now of course because we're alternating um Mr Heatherton what qualities would you bring to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education uh as a person I believe my qualities uh are I'm a person of high integrity and honesty I always try to put um you know the concerns of everybody um involved in the decisions and try to arrive at a decision or a conclusion that everyone benefits I realize that not everybody can win in every decision but um I I feel that there's always a conclusion that can be mutually beneficial and I believe that I have a tremendous amount of caring for people thank you and um Mr Carter would you like me to reread the question is it due or is it it's

number two what qualities would you bring yeah to the well I bring to the uh the quality I would bring would be a deciphering mind I I have an education a master's degree in religious and philosophical studies um inside I think that would be kind of the high point of understanding and being able to decipher what would be of the benefit in a plus in order to improve the school situation in whatever aspect is being discussed uh I believe I also bring a high degree of uh honesty and so on uh to the table so to speak uh and I'm been on Committees of other source business or whatever and I'm usually I've been a pretty good team player again I'll say I think I've been one uh so I I would say those are

the individual type qualities of being honest and above board and a person that can work civilly with others thank you and also to you Mr Carter number three as a board member what is your primary purpose and how will you fulfill that purpose well again uh the main the main thing is for it is even stipulated in some of the questions in applying for this is the the overall goal is to improve um the the school system that's the general one and uh that would be my primary purpose everything would revolve around is this actually helping us to become or succeed in educating the children um whatever that may take or whatever that deals with uh how it how will I do that I think I have some expertise in helping out in various areas

uh with within the school um in fact I have a varied background in a lot of different ways and those would be directly depending on which Committee in fact I'd say there's probably no committee that I wouldn't have something positive to really add to it some I think I could add more than others I have a background too also in the science kind of field uh and also um in in in the education field of deciphering and how do you come up with with uh your goals or how do you go about it and so on and of course this is all under direction again I'm a team player so I understand in going through this government of handbook uh that the process that it looks like it takes so Mr hetherton um I believe

uh my primary purpose would be to make sure that the priorities and caring of the students is first and foremost beyond that I my purpose would be to make sure that the teachers are being heard and that they believe and trust that they have a voice that matters um to the district and to the board um beyond that how I how would I achieve that I would achieve that through open communication and working with and trying to listen to all the constituents but primarily trying to re-engage the community and develop that sense of Pride that I believed existed more so when I was a student in the district so it would be I don't know if what's allowed but um maybe some Outreach stuff to get different varying opinions and uh take into consideration the

different perspectives and move forward from there thank you um and also Mr Heatherton okay what is important for a board member to know about the District budget well I did look through the budget a bit there was a lot of terminology that I listened to that varied from my business in particular quite a bit the numbers were a lot larger as well um primarily um I think the the goal of the board would be to ensure that fiscal responsibility is uh taken into consideration and followed and abided by and that the uh safety of the students and the staff is of utmost uh importance so you know facilities proper protections and education to those aspects thank you and um Mr Carter yes um I've been on a lot of budget committees in my life the

biggest issue or shall I say for me the what I have understood in the way I've understood budgets is discretionary funds need to follow the goals that the school establishes the board and so on and uh that's basically the way I would I go about budgets is if we say we're going to build a shout out back at one of the schools and you know is did we really budget the money for that are we really fooling ourselves we've set goals but we're taking the money and spending it somewhere else um most of the time when it comes to uh I'll call it a governmental agency a lot of the funds already are not discretionary and so I I and basically from having talked with uh uh Todd Curtis here our wonderful superintendent I'm not

lobbying okay and uh uh that that's pretty much the case and that's what I pretty much expected thank you and uh Mr Carter number five what are your priorities if you are selected as a board member well my first and foremost priority is are we really educating the child and that sounds kind of broad um but it it is it it what what is this child really learning I'm a I'm pretty much a deaf guy on um curriculum um what are we really saying when we say we're teaching a certain thing or if there's a book let's say and it's it's saying certain things um what is it really teaching the child and is this whatever it's teaching is it really educational uh and that requires then just more definition you might say I'm a

guy that's kind of into definition uh what when we use terms uh you know are they subjective in a sense or are they objective in that they are Concrete in their meaning uh and that's just basically life going through and trying to find out or decipher what what is really going on a lot of that comes from having worked I taught parenting uh classes and as I said I was the director in the foster care agency and I I worked with foster parents and obviously 65 bed spaces with kids and a lot of times we in fact the big issue is you you set goals and so on uh and you evaluated your goals and so a lot of it comes down to are we honestly evaluating our goals and so on and are we

meeting what we said we were going to set out to do hmm I'll defer to my wonderful person here all right Mr Heatherton I think your lobby um what are the priorities uh priority number one uh children are safe and are provided a environment to learn and to thrive not only as students but to feel safe in voicing you know what they're going through another priority would have to be getting up to speed on District issues or policies as quickly as reasonable um that is uh it's a little overwhelming going through the prior agendas and trying to grasp at any small level of understanding of what the board has gone through and it's going through so that would definitely be a higher priority to get up to speed and so that I could be a

productive and trusted member with a trusted voice as soon as uh thank you and still with you Mr Heatherton how should a board deliberate over a current controversial issue well as any successful group of people would deliberate you take into consideration the different perspectives gather the facts and do your best to establish an outcome that follows current protocols laws and rules taking into consideration everybody's feelings but feelings are kind of secondary at that point when it comes into a rural situation so Gathering the facts and taking into considered Edition perspectives and coming to A A group decision thank you and Mr Carter very careful um yeah I agree it's a sense in first that you basically shall I say non-emotionally take into consideration data and input and there's a there's a point really basically at

first really coming to grips with what is the controversy and if you don't Define the controversy uh and and once you really get the true data it's kind of like a court situation you you have to come up with the data first and then ultimately from that and but I also think that in this process a lot of it is just the the board itself together coming up and discussing this the issue and uh and and basically being uh pliable in in a sense where they can work together over the over the the issue and it's a controversial one and not everybody's going to like your outcome possible to please everybody okay moving on Mr Carter this is also yours how as a board member will you engage with the community um well I'm retired

I engage with the community um so yeah I'm in fact I read the little booklet and uh I didn't see anything in there I I engaged with it pretty openly and if it behooves me or the board because in there it said that it's not mandatory in my terminology my interpretation but I have absolutely no good problem being out in the public in a at a public place a ball game or whatever or or in the coffee shop where it's a kind of a talk you know meet your board member or questions and answers I've been pretty good I would say uh socially with people I get along with people pretty well I have very few memories so I I don't I I'm open to engagement and I guess that if that's the kind of

what you're looking for I do have the time and I do enjoy the engagement engagement and children thank you Mr Heatherton yes um well I enjoy going to extracurricular activities um unfortunately I'm a little biased towards sports with my background but I I do have a daughter who loves going to plays and musicals so I I do enjoy that as well I would be remiss to say that I enjoy that a little bit more from my time with my daughter though but um I'm very open to uh communicating with people I'm out and about in the community my whole life um Beyond uh Beyond meetings with people if the I I can't recollect Beyond uh meetings with uh superintendent if the board has opened themselves up to that or if they're in attendance at those

but I would have no issue um you know working that in the schedule and being open to to all areas of input thank you um and Mr Heatherton the next of course please finish this hypothetical situation if a parent cornered you in the grocery store and asked for your support on a particularly hot issue you would uh unfortunately I I almost try to go to the grocery store in Disguise my business that can be some controversial encounters already but um yeah I've shopped at six in the morning a lot um no you'd have to uh you know do your best to listen uh try to be unemotional and if it is as I'm learning and reading about the brown act if it's not an agenda item you're not allowed to talk to it but I

think you uh try to do your best to summarize their concern and then bring that back to the board into the superintendent and get direction on the appropriate way to handle it and um Mr Carter uh I've been in this situation many times uh it's it's basically you acknowledge that you hear them but basically you Endeavor not to engage and usually in this type of a situation it's not that really difficult you kindly tell the person I can't discuss this issue this is something that depending on the issue they're bringing up this is something that I would have to bring to the board or basically that it's it's not appropriate for me to engage you in this line of thinking accusation whatever's going on and it you know it kind of goes with the next

question in a way so that's a and that's the way so do you want to just move into the next question they're angry and they disagree well I have a saying this your actions or your behavior in this case is speaking so loud I can't hear what you're saying in other words if this person is angry and verbally attacks and so on my my initial reaction is I'm pretty patient I basically just kind of I'm quiet down and that's usually the best way in other words I don't engage in some kind of a verbal tiring and that usually has a tendency to bring them down um and so and it's through that and then ultimately uh addressing it is usually in such a way that you know let's talk civilly something of that nature sometimes

that works sometimes it doesn't sometimes it's best just to walk away it works that way having DSM for children and in fosterone this is was every week somebody engaging you angry uh over something that may be important in that but in reality in the whole ball of wax it was or is it that could be a scenario but she handled it Mr Heatherton uh excuse me I'm sorry yeah one second um I think we need to read the question on to record um because we're okay being live stream lived yeah the question wasn't right Sergeant okay that's fine yeah how would you handle someone that is angry and disagrees with your opinion and directly verbally attacks you and or the board so uh depending upon the intensity of their anger and the attacks um the

initial solution may be just as easy to walk away but I think there would need to be a conversation uh about kind of engaging in a kind of a common uh a 24-hour rule where uh you try to allow cooler heads to Prevail and maybe set a mutually agreeable time to discuss that a little bit further with the person after everyone has had a chance to allow their emotions to settle a bit um beyond that just recognizing the fact that they're um you know acknowledged that they're angry acknowledge that we all have uh hot points and uh you know emotional items that get us going and um that you respect that but that this maybe is not the appropriate time or place to do that and try to figure out a better solution or a

better environment for that conversation to occur thank you and with uh did you yeah um president Turnbull I just was looking at the time and with the Duke to the two candidates moving so quickly through um and just if the board um would want there's not an additional question but allow each candidate to just have a final minute to share anything else that they would like with the board prior to moving off of this agenda on the specific agenda item if that is um suitable for you president terminal um it's fine for me should we say still two minutes keep it at two sure so it's just my thought that we moved rather quickly through those questions um we didn't we didn't give them to two minutes very often in an effort to help you

as board members to to have your final you know to start your deliberations I thought it'd be worthwhile to just ask each candidate um just to maybe any final thoughts or things they'd like to share with you give them just a little think time yeah yeah giving it to him um so you know maybe think something that you think we should know that we didn't cover um both candidates thank you so much and and just a note um my wife doesn't like me to go to the grocery store with her um but uh but yeah I think it's just an opportunity for you as the board has has to deliberate here shortly and make a decision very quickly that since we have a little bit of time you just have the opportunity to take two

minutes to just share whatever you think might be worthwhile for them as they move quickly into deliberation shortly okay so and and president Turnbull regards to whom I'm not sure where you were at I think it might be I think they should do rock paper scissors I was just gonna suggest that rock paper scissors you know I might say that that may be considered unfair yeah you know I'm not sure I think we should just whoever was last certainly do yeah and which I think probably that was Mr Heatherton that finished the last question that needs to go next so maybe when you feel ready okay you know certainly um beyond the information that was in the application packet and the answers to today's uh information I think it would be um I think it'd

be important for the board to know that um this is something that I kind of I feel like I kind of need in my life at this point um I having three children in the school district still starting to uh just feel like a sense more of obligation to my family to be more involved again taking the Hiatus from being involved I also feel like it'd be an amazing opportunity to learn to be a better listener which I'm not the greatest at that on a current basis I have a tendency to interrupt people so this enforce uh personal growth additionally if it would be appropriate I'd like to ask the board a question hmm and anybody can answer as a board what do you feel is the greatest challenge ahead of the district say in

the next six months you know what can we do this um we make a note of that question and after both candidates go we can answer that question so Mr Heather what was that just as far as like you know for future involvement here what what big stuff's facing okay so and I'll help with that question after uh what you know but what's big stuff is facing I just just so that we can hear from both final counts thank you um my upper most highest goal is to be a service we would say to the community but to be more specific primarily to this board doesn't mean that the education of the child is secondary but I understand that in order to be of service to the child to the rest of the school that

my primary purpose is to be of service to you uh and that's the reason why I want success but I find that in order to really gain success in obtaining goals if you want to put it in that vernacular is a heart service is caring and servant and that's that's my shall I just call it my upper my way I want to operate and I feel that through that we would be successful as a team and and ultimately obtaining where completing goals so I think that would be probably the biggest aspect extremely important to be successful or cause my community to be a better community Through service and primarily in this case service on this board people okay thank you very good and of course board you they were you were asked a question so

you could either consider answering that question which is really what's the kind of big stuff facing the board moving forward um you could do that either right now if you'd like um president Turnbull whatever Direction you'd like to give to your you know if you'd like to answer for other give other boards members opportunity or to move directly into the next agenda item which is the deliberations and selection and within that conversation sharing some of those those big things that the boards made before with so whatever your direction is at this time any member members of the board would like to respond you are certainly welcomed did someone want to speak um to that question you know I would say um mental health is a big thing the mental health and the safety and obviously

we are looking at um the bond for the school district so those I feel are going to be really big um the safety is a huge thing with our district you know we got a grant three years ago for SRO at so we have one at the middle and the high school but with short staff at the Police Department sometimes that has interfered with that kind of coverage so you know my opinion it's mental health safety and the bond um down the road we are going to be looking at things like the 4x4 at the high school the schedule curriculum which Mr Carter you mentioned already I feel those are pretty big topics coming up great thank you do you guys have anything to add to that uh great job uh trusty Pastor those are

some of the big issues I think related to um curriculum it's you know we are looking at um just trying to build capacity to teach to you know teach our students what they need I think we're learning we've got new assessment tools that are providing this information about where some of the gaps are I think the big challenge is how do you you know how do you create time there's not enough time maybe in the day but also just how to be creative about uh really helping teachers and aides um serve the kids where they where they really need the help you know to to get to grade level and be able to succeed you know so those are uh huge challenges too so so all of these are strategies or projects that are really

underpinning our our drive to improving achievement our achievement is not where we wanted so um that's that's right let me add that what we're about to face I would say in the next couple years is going to be unbelievable it's going to be unbelievable because we may be having a decline in enrollment we have gone through two years of where students haven't been in the classroom for seven and a half hours you mentioned that achievement Gap so we have a lot of things we have to do but the nice thing that I see in the last two years is that we're trying to develop a system and I agree with both of you I think both of you have the right attitude this is about kids this is not about five people sitting up here

or a superintendent and no offense it's not about YouTube okay it's about what we can do best for kids and there's a lot of I will just call them political Wars we're facing right now whether it be you know Banning books or critical race Theory or mass or gosh you know we had to go through a stages of phases in which we were fighting um covet so what I want and what I see that we face is that we have to develop a system that is best for kids and I honestly believe that in 20 July of 2020 we started that unfortunately we've had to now go around and face covet several times and I pray and I knock on wood that we don't have to face that and we can have a normal sort

of period of time where the kids come to the Forefront and that we don't have to spend a lot of time on mass we don't spend a lot of time on covid and stuff like that so you meet either one of you whoever's chosen you may be coming at the right time where we had to have some normalcy or a new normal I call it a new normal I don't we can't go back to 2019. that's not going to happen but we can start a new note all right well thank you um as you're going to speak all righty so with that I think we move into our discussion period um agenda item number four board deliberations and selection right um we're doing it here yep yeah um president Turnbull members of the board this

is an open discussion um and you are open to make a motion a second a vote at any time that you're ready however you want to conduct your conversations this is your opportunity and we are you know as we had said that the the the the the directions for this is that we we're not going to do any follow-up questions during deliberations this is your conversation now this is the five of you so this is um reading the applications and then uh listening to the candidates question answers to our questions which I feel like our questions kind of repeated what was in the application um I'm both candidates are amazing um but I'm actually leaning towards Mr Heatherton um he still has kids in the district and me being the only board member that had

a kid had still has a child in the district I feel like that's a really unique perspective um it's um also um he's a businessman in our community so he's already dealt with like the angry parent or a concerned citizen which I know Mr Carter as well has um I just feel like the answers Mr Heatherton was giving was really kind of refreshing and well-rounded um that's just kind of my thoughts on it right now I feel like his answers were in his application were pretty spot on um and even with him mentioning his own shortcomings um he brought that to the table which to me also talks about personal growth and willing to learn a new um perspective in his I mean this is a career piece I mean honestly this being on this

board it is like a part-time job you know and um it is a big it's a big commitment but um you know it's fun as well it's got a lot of fun moments it's humbling there's time I felt like when I came on this board when my swearing in it was like pitchforks and torches and it just felt like the first several years actually this final year has been my only year where I feel like oh there's no drama now you know and um I do feel like both candidates would handle turmoil well um but I do appreciate the fact of um John's answers and that his kids are still in the district um thank you trustee banister I agree with you and I believe that both of these are very qualified candidates and um

but I am leaning also toward Mr Heatherton um a few of the things that I um really liked that he said was um on question eight if you're in the grocery store what do you do kind of thing listen summarize bring it back to the superintendent and to the board and kind of it and it really depends on what the the issue is is it an issue with the teacher have you talked to the teacher have you talked to them um but just to listen and not try to solve it or make promises because we are one of the things that I really love about this board that we are a cohesive board we listen to arguments we deliberate we discuss um and then we come to a consensus and it's like the feelings it's

what's best for kids over our own personal oh but I really want kind of thing so um I think both candidates are very qualified but I also am looking forward Mr Heatherton [Music] you want me to say something so um I'll give you directions from the show president yeah you know I no it's fine it's fine I actually I don't think I have a strong opinion I I consider having children in the district an asset as well as a challenge um gosh it's it's um anyway I you know I could elaborate on that a little bit just in that there's um there's personal tugs on your opinion and heart um there's um time issues your children will also um know that you're the board on the board right um so there's some interesting elements to

that and um as someone who had um has has to the time and gets involved in the community I can see that that's also a strength for Mr Carter I I don't think I have a strong leaning um either way honestly I can see strengths in both directions and I think they're you're both my candidates I'm so pleased that you're sitting there thank you thank you both of you are worthy candidates um but I'm gonna for me the difference that I see if I have to first of all don't really like this system I've done this three times all right two of the three times we've had to do this has been area two okay area two has not with all due respect candidates have not or didn't have not wanted I guess to run

a campaign or run against people or whatever the issue may be but they're just we just we've had to feel this now twice this will be the this will be the third I wasn't on the board the first time this be the third time the last three candidates have been appointed so I don't like the system but we have to do the system the five of us would rather the voters make this decision not us okay because four years from now if you run it's going to say appointed incumbent you're not okay so you have a stigma Mr Carter I would love to go out and have a an adult beverage with you sometime and just sit down sort of pick your mind and pick your brain and just have a great conversation okay I

find you uh I find you very compelling however I also am leaning and not leaning I am going to vote for Mr Heatherton for a variety of reasons I do believe that I would like to have a board member have children in the school system just because it gives us a different perspective and sometimes we Overlook stuff it's compelling to me for that but to be very honest both of you did a wonderful job okay and to work with either one of you would not bother me one iota okay and I would not feel bad about hey so and so on but so and so lost and so forth so what like trust or a black president Turnbull said thank you because I think you both are highly qualified candidates thank you um and now

I would get to be the last person and I don't know that I have a much more to add but I I want to um just thank you both I really appreciate you stepping up and um I was in your shoes just two years ago I was appointed to fill um Barbara Banner's seat so I got to go through the same process that was on Zoom though so that was more interesting maybe I don't know challenging I could be in my pajamas though no nobody knew I was doing my bunny slippers that day but no I um so I really I really do um I really liked seeing both of your answers um to the questions and you know I would like um Mr Carter I like your um focus on Improvement you know like

that's just really being focused on the goal of what can we do every day you know what how can we do something better and um so I appreciate just your emphasis on that and just understanding the roles of boards and and kind of the behaviors uh when you have to approach somebody that's bringing a challenging problem you know that we're not we're only one of five board members and we don't get to make the decisions we have to we have to do it collectively so I appreciate that um but I I am another board member who is leaning toward Mr Hetherington and I I think primarily I liked um your focus on trust you know on really building trust and I think the one I would say one of the challenges I didn't bring up

earlier but I think it's something I wanted to do you know coming to the board is this notion of enhancing parent and Community involvement and you emphasize that um Mr heatherington in your application and it seems like a really tough nut to crack you know I I Rely a lot on the teachers and our administrators to um schedule meetings you know go go to fiestas you know um attend different community events and really try to get more Community input and participation and you know covet has obviously been a big challenge but I also think there's something I know there's things we're not doing and that we can do better right and I hope that maybe by the fact that you've got students in the school district um you have an opportunity to pick the brains

of parents and and try to find out what motivates them to show up you know and I think especially with our um Latino population and some of the other populations we need to go to where they are um we need to really be open to their input we need to invite them to participate and just as uh many people mentioned here about we don't have we haven't had candidates run for office in this area um you know I hope that we could start today um recruiting people to step up and participate whether it's thinking about four years from now or two years from now for to be on the board to run for office or to participate at the PTA levels um I think we need to be more intentional about that invitation so I'm

hopeful that Mr Hetherington you can help us with that and I'm glad that's something that's your desire that you want to do and it's a goal so I appreciate that um and I also I also am learning to be a better listener so I appreciate your goal in doing that and wanting to do that as well as personal growth and I hope that um you know I share the concern about the sense of obligation you have a sense of obligation to your family which is always going to be your priority um and I do uh I am I do hope that that doesn't get in the way of serving all the students in our on our community because um what your students your children may need um may not be the best solution or the

best or the highest priority or need in terms of other students in the district that need a lot more support right now so I hope that you can hold all that in mind as well so thank you so with that would someone like to make emotionally I just want to real quick um I want to thank both of you guys for coming applying I mean I'm actually pretty heartbroke to leave the seat but it's not by choice it's because I'm moving um this having a conversation about something that I treasure a lot and having to have this uncomfortable discussion right in front of you because all this time I thought we were going to go into closed and like not have to you know and then come out with the magic name but I I

just really appreciate you both doing this stepping up answering um the call um one of the greatest things somebody said to me when I came on to this board because Miss Banner told me this is a piece of cake position it's fun it's easy and it has not yet been that but uh I mean it's been fun but it hasn't been necessarily easy but um at the time when I came on appointed as um trustee Riley mentioned nobody ran against me I turned my paperwork in I want to save five minutes before the last day of the last minute because I was just so on the fence so the fact that you guys have stepped up put thought into it I mean your answers are all very well thought out I really really appreciate like

I it this makes me feel better knowing that there's people that'll step up so um that being said with stepping onto a school board um the community is with the school board trustee position the community is trusting you as an individual to make the right decisions and steps for the greater good and that is something that I know I remind myself all the time it's not about Brandy it's not about my kid it's about the greater good um so that being said long-winded apologies coffee um I make a motion that we appoint Mr John Heatherton to trustee area to please is that the right way that would be fine motion emotional work I will second president Turnbull before you ask if there's any further discussions just a couple things I'd like to just say before

you take the vote um and let me Echo as the superintendent um just my appreciation for both of you coming forward um and and I had a night a wonderful meeting with Mr Carter the other day thank you for that um I had a conversation with um Mr Heatherton on the phone so I appreciate that as well um I was relieved to know that we had two really quality applicants that would be possibly one of the one of one of which would be joining the board and uh and so I just appreciate that um a note and Mr Heather obviously you're you have been a motion in a second um this position doesn't take the seat until December gets sworn in our first meeting in December um just wanted to make sure that that this

says this is not an immediate seat taking it and and your name will be submitted this afternoon moving forward if you're the selected candidate for the vote I just but I just wanted to make sure because after it's done you know we move on but thank you so much because it means a great deal to me as a superintendent so at this point is there any public comments I have not received any requests to speak and are there any further questions from the board [Music] okay so with that we have a motion by trustee banister to appoint Mr John Heatherton to the to Phil trustee area to vacancy we have a second by trustee Riley with all those in favor please say aye aye aye all those opposed that motion carries thank you I'm going

to Maui by the way we're going to be taking it righty so with that we move on to number five announcement of items to be discussed in closed session letter A Public Employee dismissal discipline release government code section 54957 and B public employee performance evaluation government code section 54957 and with that at 421 by a journey into closed session
