just a heads up the live stream is starting right now all right thank you once you guys will you guys make sure your mic's on over there okay mike is on monday mike's son thank you you're welcome i just don't want you guys see as each chapter i highlight with a different color highlight let me show you something ready see this you're all here watch this see don't so if you say got it oh my gosh look who look cool you know what though you've got a couple extra steps in yeah i'm impressed that's right by the way right here all right it's like old days bob i would like to bring to order this meeting um lake tahoe unified school board of education on july 25th at six o'clock and uh let's start with

the pledge uh let's all just stand and do the punch i pledge to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic justice for all ms chandler would you please take the roll call number one because present it's just because i'm not looking at the agenda specifically that trustee kemper was joining us virtually is that correct correct yes solicitor is listed at the top moving on to number two is there a motion to adopt the agenda am i allowed to make a motion you can't i think that we adopt the agenda i'll second it so there's been a move by trustee turnbull to a motion to adopt the agenda on a second by trustee riley all those in favor please say aye aye aye all those opposed motion carries um we will

do communications from the public later because there is only one topic on this board meeting and with that we move into number four uh board professional development workshop six to seven thirty take it away president turnbull members of the board thank you very much just making notes that we are just reporting um not having cameras on we do have uh an additional attendee and that is bob right well thank you for joining us today okay and since we do have a visitor for those that may be listening online or watching later the board of trustees has spent this past not quite a year yet now probably eight months or so working through the the governance floor and uh each month we skipped a month based on a couple of conflicts but uh each month we've

been reading a chapter and discussing the specifics of that chapter and how they impact us as a governance team and how we can work effectively as a team to do what's best and necessary um moving ourselves forward as a district so appreciate that that's just kind of an intro to it we are on chapter eight um and i'm excited about this chapter because i think that each chapter has brought us a new learning new reflection conversation to help guide us how we can become more and more cohesive and collaborative and successful and chapter eight is specifically called the governing schools right and so i just wanted to start with and we do have a little note taker or study piece that we've been putting together all the way through and on chapter 8 i had

written the ingredients for the entire governance team to have thoughtful purposeful governance is commitment to community so i didn't mean to have that those question marks there i think i change it to recognize and value one another's perspective and willingness to listen carefully three believe in their superintendent or we're collaboratively with the superintendent and and what i just really didn't feel like we've jumped into those it's really clearly out of those four elements or ingredients for entire government team have thoughtful purposeful governance and i think the book has outlined those those components for us conditions that sustain this work by the way just in regards to taker i had written it as a question and thought you know what i'm not going to i'm actually selling it out because so that's why i didn't remove

those question marks conditions that sustained this work governance workshop discussion meetings government's handbook onboarding a new team members governance assessment tool and really that set up this chapter to really talk about four specific elements but before we jump in is there any opening thoughts many of the board members on the opening of this chapter and those first two components the ingredients of the entire diverse team to be thoughtful and purposeful and the conditions to sustain this was one of my favorite chapters um i really like the governance workshops and getting to know each other and where each other's you know our perspectives and our points of view that you don't get sitting up there in a formal meeting any other initial thoughts before we jump into the chapter well i guess and the only thing

i would say is i'm glad to know that we have kind of made some inroads and all of these maybe none of them are complete but we're on the right track sure you know i i appreciate that the intros right it's always a good working progress right and how we go about building our team building our process looking at how we do the things that the book says our you know research-based successful practices for guys but obviously we continue to work through and to grow all right anything else before we move on the we could set him aside right yeah we did that to lori when she was in one of these yeah yeah you know there's a chair back you know with one person attending it's good um all right so let's dive in

and and then the chapter really is about four tools discussion meetings government's handbook board self-evaluation and board continuing education so what i'd love this to do is jump in to talk about discussion meetings and your thoughts around what the book said about the social media um so i'll stick with that okay just in the efforts of science percentage i highlighted chapter one chapter on page 138 the second paragraph in the book and it reads highly effective boards find alternatives without undermining the spirit of the letter of the open meeting laws or brown act right one of these is use of discussion meetings and so it goes on to say these are formal notice meetings usually with the superintendent and maybe one or two senior established to discuss general governance issues reviewing the writing government's protocol

checking out how the meetings are going assessing the world review of companies health of the board um superintendents to share strategic ideas about the future so that that's what they spelled out overall the discussion meeting i would say that we haven't necessarily been engaging in this session well we have a around sort of an end around okay and we sort of fake it inside pitch it around the end by having our monday meetings and by having two of us with you going over agenda and whatever is out there i'm talking about whatever on the agenda that's out there that needs to be discussed it allows us to express ourselves to ask questions in depth for example i thought today when you and i were together and you go hey why are we paying out three

million dollars [Laughter] that was a really big big sort of uh sign for poorer for val but it was it was a bond service yeah it gives us a chance i'm gonna just put it in perspective when you came on board 2020 and everybody does things differently so you have to one of the things in there you have to be able to work with the superintendent you have to and this is really important you have to trust the superintendent but to trust the superintendent you have to allow the superintendent to run his or her system i like the monday meetings because it gives me an opportunity to listen to others okay and bring up ideas that maybe i'm not thinking about or if i say something they may have a question for me and so

indirectly these discussion meetings that they talk about in the book we actually do but not all together it's it's two and the superintendent two and the superintendent and sometimes i've you know i go to a third meeting with with another one so there's five there's five okay and it's fine it's fine so and having the opportunity to visit something several times you get to develop that little conversation yes and here's the deal you walk away like we get from our meeting and i it's a couple things to talk to me a little bit about hey you know i'm going to ask some questions here during the during the big board meeting here and we'll get some answers and we'll find find out what's going on but this is i this is i think the strength

of what has happened since 2020 is having an open communication among the board and the superintendent okay in the slow steady process yes and it's not we're not in a hurry it's a turtle's pace and i like i like i like that you see the monday meetings prior to working as discussion you're discussing awesome but you could write chapter 10 and put it in the book and i think people might like what you're doing seriously okay because here's the deal you put five people in a room with two assistant superintendents and the superintendent there's going to be some silence with some of them or some people are not going to ask questions or they're just going to sit back when it's only three sometimes that hey well what do you think right come on and

we did that today okay and i think that there's a real strength to that well i i i appreciate that and i think that i appreciate hearing your perspective of it um i know that the intent that i had is is that you know a board board materials can become very complex right and and can be overwhelming and and it provides the opportunity because it's not about we have only two board members so we don't have a forum in me and we're able to really get in and discuss and go over and ask questions and ask questions and just and and really think i think what you said president turnbull is like thinking about this is a you continue adding to the conversation and building on especially when you think we do agenda item information

and item discussion and agenda item action it builds on each of those times so i appreciate that trustee kemper was i seen you i thought i saw you wanting to jump in oh i was listening um i i wanted the only thing i want to add is that i mean i do think that uh these meetings are an example of discussion meetings right where we're discussing a chapter for instance um with the whole group and uh i appreciate doing these kinds of discussion meetings with the whole group um in a public setting so that the public um can learn along with us if they choose and i and i guess i'd i look for more opportunities to have meetings that are considered discussion meetings on a um on a topic i mean i understand that's

what we do you know our normal process in terms of having an agenda item that's information and then discussion and then action but i'm thinking about discussion meetings in the future like for instance development of the lcap and i think you know anna marie does this uh dr cohen does this well where she brings us something uh new or big i mean a good example is the differentiated assistance plan that's on the agenda for thursday it's a new requirement you know it's a new maybe a newer program that we all need to learn a little bit more about and and there may be some opportunities for discussion um in terms of you know staff is is laying out what the requirements are and what the proposals are and we have an opportunity to ask questions

and maybe make some suggestions but to me that's an example of a discussion meeting um where we just take a little more time and give all the board members an opportunity to kind of learn together and that's what i see these book club meetings are like that as well but i think it's nice to do it in a public setting because the public can grow and learn alongside us and and the trainings that we do kind of function in the same way yeah um and i would say that the board self-evaluation when you're doing that meeting it's the same thing also so there there's a sequence of them that we're we're doing so i always wanted to have ones that were more topic-oriented but now i totally understand why we can't do that as much

right although it does say if you're floating a new idea right out the gate maybe you could have a have a conversation about it but well you know it's funny give you one in a second but but i appreciate that was just shared and reading from the book on page 139 which i was that's funny i was reading my heart and then realized oh yeah it's here on the right side pulled out of and it says discussion means a lot of trusting since we didn't take the time to develop a shared understanding that leads to the board's active participation ownership of the of the moral impairment district-wide coherence and so i think that i think what i would say is if we see like something that's a pretty big topic that really needs us to

make sure that we take time with it schedule a discussion meeting specific to it so that it's not in that sense of information discussion action it's more of a and i'm going to throw this out there because this was brought to me by one of our staff this year like if we say oh well what's happening let's have universe i think that'd be a great but that's a major shift for a district right to do something like that it's not this is just an information item right this is a we better have a discussion meeting to talk about yeah and get a shared understanding and start to generate some direction like because that's a big sum up so i would have liked to do it when we did the when we drew the school boundaries

um i don't know if that was already too long too late in the pro in the year and and for the whole sequence but it would have been good at that for that because that's that's a transformative i think that's a great statement right if we would have been thinking about could have with as we were redoing um looking at the schools and areas and transportation areas and all of that we knew it was going to be a big lift with the community could have we had a night and evening or saturday morning to just talk right that's a great i think it's those major topics that can um be also be highly political environment right and you want to make sure you're working through it together there might be an opportunity for example if

we're going to have a discussion around high school schedule [Music] say that again even doing group visits to school to kind of see what the problems are and then not just see it on paper oh yeah that point of accent oh or something like that so one thing i would be careful of what kosher said if something zeroed in on a specific site is that does that lead to a specific employee or something certain things so more topical you know larger scale i think it is a good example that hey we're looking at changing start times and areas let's have this let's have a discussion meeting i i don't know if i'd like to serve just because of the information discussion in action so i i think more a lot of alliances and understanding i

don't know that's the right term but we're getting a general understanding of the reasons and the topics of what's exploring that further right so that's the way i was picturing it you know kind of an educational opportunity so this is you know let's say we're you know looking yeah here's pros and cons here's you know the consequences that we might see anyway laying the whole thing out from your perspective right and then having a conversation follow that and taking in that information and chewing on it for a little bit anything i i thought this was really important for a tool to discuss because interesting i think i really appreciate trustee reilly saying well we kind of do them regularly just do them one superintendent two and then a differentiation of that so that really is

a discussion right where maybe the discussion he was also talking about is that learning and understanding that getting him hey this is a major main topic like sometimes when you guys shannon chen and i go over what the board has asked for future and sometimes what you've asked for isn't exactly what we bring isn't exactly what you asked for but it didn't it aligns with it and sometimes i think well let me just sometimes they're a big bra i want to hear more about special education maybe we just have a learning data learning meeting about special education right because it's a lot more in-depth than above the 15-minute presentation from dr cohen maybe what we just want to learn i think that's important especially when if we if and when we onboard new board members

that there are we have to remember that not everybody coming into the boardroom is former educators uh maybe not have as much understanding of some of the main topics so maybe these learning meetings are also part of that transition the other thing is that that's really only the second category that they're referring to the first one being basically the mechanics of how does this group function and so you know i guess the evaluation kind of comes with that but generally that's not something we touch um you know to reviewing or writing government's protocols checking on how meetings are going assessing over all health of the board no that kind of that's a really a different focus you know absolutely having that purpose as well yeah very good any other comments i would just add to

that you call it educational session or motivational session okay where whatever topic because i think lori has a good point bringing people together and just communicating and talking but our job is to also listen okay not always to be talking and so i and i'm i'm i'm i'm trying to think of a subject let's say but let's say we get into let's say we get into some kind of curriculum issues right it would be a good idea to ask for feedback out there so forth and so on okay you feel this way okay so something like the stage coming out of the new circular topic that we need to be looking at let's do an educational session with an educational session bring in the when we did you know you were there lori was was

a guest bob was there when we brought in teresa and megan and we were trying to figure out the characters this characteristics of the new superintendent but we wanted to use data right and and and all of that it was an opportunity where people came in here they listened some wanted questions to be asked but it was inappropriate the first time but when we did meet collectively we'd let the people in the audience be part of the breakouts and that was an educational session these are the things that we see our kid might my child's gone through uh kindergarten through third grade and struggled and you got to learn things and i think part of that is that it's an educational session and part of it has to be listened so you know partly i

think the um indicator might be something like is this going to be controversial and if it is going to be controversial no you know that there's a range of opinions and so it should be assumed that the board might come in with a range of opinions as well you know even when we first adopted our uh coded um the whole system that we did whatever you know um that might have been another opportunity to have a really robust discussion amongst the board the public could be invited or whatever specifically for education discussion the only problem was that we were all isolated zoomed in there were so many problems about the facilities plan yeah that before we would have lost the entire committee to about an educational meeting about why we need to have them i

would love to go in that direction that there will be certain topics out there let's listen what i would say about going that direction i think that you guys already are asked to do i think it has to be really well thought out that this is a topic that is that is well i just went back to the last couple of years and i came up with two yeah right i think that's right i think that it's like hey but it's knowing it before and i think we could have projected both of them though like like just you talked about um the start time and transportation areas and then i just talked about so we could have said hey this is a big big big rocks right so let's start with an education session well

i love it i love the conversation so anything final before we move to the second tool yeah okay the second tool is on the list is governance handles now what i want to say there's plenty to read in here about government what i want to say is this in my experience with the government's handbooks the board somewhere along the line passed a policy and then adopted a governance handbook and if you had could see me on the screen there it's usually the big binder a couple inches thick and most people don't ever get through a big binder now i think we've got to do even more with a governance handbook because sometimes i got we got to even spell out how operations of the boardroom and some of the some of the practices we do

which but i did bring for everybody tonight what i'm calling our governance handbook um and it's what we really have worked through the last couple years with a little bit of adjustment thank you um and because now again i don't think this is the end-all be-all i just wanted to bring it up um and i think trustee kemper we sent you a copy i have it yep i'm looking at it and and i think it really kind of needs to spell out the functions of the board but not go too far i mean i think it's missing a few things but when you look at it it's got the district motto vision and mission it's got the school board gold and priorities it's got a resolution that every time we have a change in our

board we bring it back and resolve to do a resolution [Music] get updated every two years and we can review it and we can agree upon it every two years or even more often if something changes because i think if there's a change in the board it needs to be brought forward right because there's a change on the board so you got it in the appearance and responsibility for governance standards and board protocols so i see there's a lot of mechanics here and i think that's that's important yeah i'm also looking for a little history like i'm wondering i mean this is not well brought through but you know when you're coming on board so what have been significant resolutions what have been the significant policy updates or you know whatever these things that are

um part of the story that the board has been telling that is you know i don't know exactly what that would look like but it feels like this is very hollow in a way like this doesn't orient you to the culture of really what the you know the initiatives have been all the sort of thing you know that's why i mentioned like maybe maybe the resolutions but maybe they're not relevant anymore i don't know but well i think that any and all ideas are important um and i was thinking about what systems i mean and i was thinking about what's the what's the date of their life that's actually what i was meaning what are you asked to do and so i actually thought about what in my mind maybe added is something that says

you know these are we have four beans and this is the schedule and you're asked to attend a discussion monday this board meeting discussion you're asked to get you know these are the things we're asked to do um so i was thinking more of a so i guess maybe this is a how and that's a what um i'm still looking for some stories some background but i guess you know that would have to be that would take a lot more judgment calls and then it would also perhaps become dated so there's problems with both of that but you know it it just what's the tone what's the it you're the historian come on what do you think i understand what you're trying to say the only problem you have is that every two years you

have an election right and one election is it's mansfield you and myself in 2020 we were elected to the board it could have very easily been three different people okay that history leaves when the three when the people have the most history or understanding of what's going on they leave but the the history of what you have been that significant initiatives like like all this that we've worked on with sustainability for example okay like this resolution well yeah i do think what you're saying bonnie about having some of those resolutions that it may be i don't know included they're on our website i mean i think about the lcap as being something too that's a little more details about our you know our goals and how we're gonna how we're gonna accomplish them okay so

let me interrupt that just for a second absolutely let me just take the alcohol they all count a very dense document that we actually do is we do a condensed little version of it it's not actually part of the handbook it's it's the local control accountability plan that if i would be handy just so you know in the next couple weeks we're gonna find out who's running for two seats now if it's not if it's it's just our garbage support right so i don't have to do any training but if it's if it's people that aren't are running i'm gonna remember one of them treat them just like their board members right away because i want to get them up to speed i don't want to wait until they're elected in november so start inviting

them to go over agenda inviting them to uh to review important documents what are some important documents facilities master plan right that's that's part of the history right but yeah but i don't think it's so maybe in this document we say see these documents right it's that simple to say what's important in the handbook i think it's a great idea right is that important documents of the board and so are they all consistently now posted on the website there should be i haven't checked recently yeah they all should be right but i think and again i'm gonna say this if i i think it's actually pretty important because it's representative of what the board does and so if you're not interested in anything exactly then you're in the wrong so so so what i hear

is okay listen they said but can i say this two different ways right now i absolutely really hear you yeah how do we make sure this is kind of almost whole but yet if we follow these things that are written in here which align a lot with what's in here by the way i don't think you can see me and lori but i'm holding the governor's handbook should be just handed out and the government support book we follow these things oh we're doing a good job right yeah i'm going to go back to this is this part of the systems that we wanted to establish right we didn't feel like we had really good systems going you know running everything but but i'm still going to say that i keep harping on the idea of

story communicating out there these are these are really the big things that we're working on we're really trying to transform some things right and um that's i think that a message cannot be put out enough ways so let me ask this question because i'm trying to think about how we logistically i understand well and i like the idea of suggesting that that they're all in one spot on the website because they should be available to everyone anyway right yeah and i think that the district motto vision and mission statements and the school board's rules and priorities are important sheets that tell the story right is it because i can tell the story about how we got to the decision i could tell a story about the mission and why these taglines and brands and how

they came about because they were all these were all things that were said that night in the session the board's goals and priorities have come about through workshops and and retreats to come to so i think they do give the level of importance right so then part of telling the story is the dog is the thing right because i'm make sure that we and for every anyone in this community they can read the outcome okay here it is um and whatever else that we consider to be really important and it goes back in in the in the uh in the book in chapter eight there's a there's a there's a situation in there where they finally say what does the word stand for that's what you're asking if you have those documents there and i

do agree with you that if somebody doesn't want to sit down and read the lcap or doesn't want to read certain documents they probably shouldn't be on the board and i would say that you know anybody getting elected this year is going to be significantly part of like the facilities master plan going forward and all of this and and they that should be something that they're seeing and i think i think to add to that is that what is this what you know what does the word stand for we go back i think to the first chapter we go back in the book that moral imperative in the unity of purpose which you're talking about is already in here okay and so you can sort of intertwine those that these are the important documents this

is what you know not just the board but this is what the district stands for but that moral imperative these are the things that we believe in well so actually and if you look on the page 140 the bottom right parts to a government's handbook and you just said one a description of the board's moral imperative and unity is purpose right yeah i think we could have we can add to that every time yeah we're updating the document yeah yeah but i think it aligns with it where it says board of doctors strategic goals these are things that we've approved you know these are that's their strategic goals yeah right i don't know strategic i always kind of get confused about when how that word is used in these situations so the important document strategic

world really are the elements yes right in this document so we just have to think about it in this document rewards goals and priorities about being born focusing on right yeah um number two a description of the board and superintendent rules their description of the district's government's culture yeah it's kind of here but i think that that's part of what you're always saying describe it i understand the other thing is that and here again i'm kind of making this up right now but the idea that we're we're not in the weeds at all you know if you're coming in because you want to get these books banned out of the library or whatever it is this is not the place for you right the idea that what the board focuses on are these big things

and so here's an example of what that looks like in action right and with that said though and again i just think we have to make sure we're thinking about maybe we put more a little bit more reference to it um when i was just going back and thinking about the big strategic goals really if we look at the priorities the goal priorities that you guys have here and that goal is written in one developed strong distribution that builds a culture of shared leadership and ownership of all student outcomes i think that tells a story right there in itself which is my in my thinking and then it's priority student preparation performance culture engagement team professional growth and learning and safety right and those are and we think about it when i think about the

elf caps three goals one is about student preparation performance one it's about professional growth and enlargement [Music] that's and that's goal number two and i mean i they're not right they need to align right and then the third goal is really about culture and engagement with people and helping and building that team that includes parents and everyone else i mean so again what i was thinking about when i read the chapter and i was thinking about what we have but we do have a big old binder out there that was developed this is 10 pages right now maybe it needs a few more right i'm finding a few things out but let's get to the heart of it in this document then it's the documents that tell the story yeah but i mean i think

maybe it's about almost a little narrative to start instead of just you know a real narrative to start about this work and the belief of this current board and how we function just just a narrative that somebody can read it's like a story at the beginning would it be all appropriate to have to include things like the survey results for example of the you know um organometrics and and you know what these things are called you know just so that people can get a sense of the pulse of what's happening and why we're addressing certain things and that kind of with that yeah because we put that out on the board well they're i just think again it gets really thick but i think it tells the story so i think keeping it's the wine

yeah i bet i think keeping these results in some form of something that's also there in a package here's here's our recent survey reasons and summary pages of how we know or how we have it i think that's i think that's powerful information so i don't want to say it's part of the government scandal [Music] right yeah and i think that we so maybe um actually i've got an activity for you to help with this in a little bit and i'm gonna move this along a little bit so just trying to stay timely are there any other thoughts about the government's hand before we before i move the conversation forward to the next school what my favorite part [Music] i missed i missed the end of val's 139 it says most of the time agreements

reached by the board are celebrated but usually not recorded in a way that can be ingrained in the culture the thing is like how do you it's the it's the applications right it's just like a learning problem every you know you you teach a student something and then that now now you have to apply it and that's a lot harder and so like how do you how what's our process for applying but one of the things that we have on our agenda this week is a review of board policy 7310 naming of facilities and we may make some amendments to it and that needs to be recorded well it will be because if you make any changes to that it'll become policy right and so i think that's the other really important thing there's so

much that we were right there's so many politicians there's so many things is that learning board member learning okay especially a brand new board member that's just trying to you know hey i'm really concerned about the district in this or i really am interested in that and being able to direct and teach how to go get more policy how to read it to find out i mean you know because i've seen and not as much here i'm trying to think of a moment here but i'm not it's not coming but places where i've been before where somebody will be we need to talk about x it's an agenda but but the x isn't it is a board policy no i know but they came in with an agenda we're going to yes yes yes i

want to address i've got these seven things we're going to do and usually policy says about that because usually we have a policy and or something from the governor's handbook that says how we do well then that brings connotation you look like you were to say something no i'm just wondering if you want to have this on loan for anyone who's uh whoever puts in for the board okay yeah that's part of i am planning for all of that to make sure you guys know okay the next tool the book talks about is board self-evaluation now i want to say this this is kind of an interesting topic of conversation how do we really self-evaluate how do we really do this and um we had in previous time there is lots of different ways that

people self-effect right we talk about csba has a self-evaluation we last year decided to take our protocols and say how do i rate myself how do i rate our i think and i guess the present term i'm looking to you a little bit because i know that you it doesn't really jive fully but i've been trying to explore how do we do this to just think about our functionality and what we're doing and i really couldn't come to anything more than but to say board members should continue to ask themselves as a board is are we true to this unity of purpose statement we keep the district focused on learning achievement for all students scale of one to five what do we see i really believe that part of an evaluation is powerful um but

i'm not sure is it important now this one i think price importance too but what i think we need to say what's important to us through self-evaluations so i want to just open up that i think we need to talk about self-evaluation and i'm ready to give you a self-evaluation to see um even if it's not what we were looking for i think it's a start to actually starting this shift so under is there anything that you guys highlighted or looked at specific to what the book says about board self-evaluation yes um the most important effective word of the self-evaluation is part of governing culture it's that it institutionalizes the assessment process the message it sends is that the board is not above accountability and also protocols will remain visible if they are evaluated and

perhaps the most valuable of all is the discussion of load foreign protocols during the analysis of the evaluation result and what i was interested in when we did it last year is the discrepancy between how we evaluated ourselves [Music] yeah you know it's interesting but one of the things that you just read i appreciate it is talk about the protocols right the things that we hold ourselves to do i think the self i think the self evaluation there's an accountability to say hey we all agreed to do a resolution to have these things that this is how we function this is how we commit to working and i think we have the responsibility to do a self-reflection in the self-evaluation so i think and i think that's what that calls that so i just want

to go back because it seems like i'm not sure if i was misunderstood or not i was i was rejecting the idea of the csba one it's extremely clear yeah okay and and i can't say that this doesn't serve the purpose i was looking for you know the only thing i don't like about it is it's so abstract and sometimes in memory you're like digging down like uh i'm not sure did we do that you know and so that's the only thing that's that's um no and i i've i've spent some time really trying to see how do we do this to a little deeper level i think that's what you're really asking for right and and so just to push our conversation forward i'm going to give this to you but before i do

and i know uh trustee campbell probably already pulled it up yeah what i really thought of this is basically the same thing a little bit a little bit more to it but basically the same thing but not i'm evaluating myself and evaluating more just evaluate the word in your perspective this is how we did it um shannon and i worked on this and we just pulled basically this hammock together but the next thing i i've asked is is how level of importance is this unity of purpose statement and actually reflecting on how important is that statement so as i give it to you you'll see and we did it for the basically this whole government's handbook is for you guys to say i think we're waiting at three and a half or three i'd actually

prefer you just do that don't go with no house i prefer you go three four two five and then if you say yeah we're really operating really highly and then say but is this really important is this one like they have to haves and it really stands out or is it not because i think that that's important to me to know as your superintendent but also for our next discussion on this i was thinking the discussion was should focus on the art yeah our weaknesses right the ones that don't come up as well well and also on this so after each section it says any comments for an and is there anything missing so this is an opportunity so let me hand this out real quick um because one of the things that also shannon

you know something that that's been hard and i don't even know how to say this well and i don't know how you put it in here is that sometimes we found ourselves as a board as a group in a little bit of a crisis mode responding to something and i'm wondering how we avoid those last minute crises becoming dominating the situation well i actually think that there are protocols and rules that establish how that shouldn't happen like that okay if you dig deep into what this says right indifferent to i've been i'm right now i'm not going straight to it but i think that there's a place of that not staying kind of above the fray of the but here's the thing i'm gonna say that's why i also wanted to say well if you

don't see it under the comments is there anything missing right because what we're gonna so what i'd like to do because i think the self-evaluation is important i think also what's important is not just the thing that this is it that has it done and to provide board members their insight to saying also you know what this is the rating one or two for me this isn't really all as a superintendent i'm like oh man and as a board member you go yeah this is a one we're actually not aligned very well but we'd have to have a conversation about it because of our governance together as a team so that's why because um i think at times speaking of you know with vulnerability i think there are times where i think something's important board

members might not and i'm thinking oh my gosh if we don't have and then when we actually sell it say i may say it because i'll fill one out as well um more about the importance than evaluating you it's not my place to do that um so you as a board think that i'll find one just randomly number seven on board protocols no individuals board members to come between superintendent his earthquake members and attempt to undermine the superintendent board members of the time permits are encouraged to visit let's say you guys go you know what really not that important you really did it too and for me and i didn't right because i have to know that i'm i'm working with my team and that's there's no undermining i think it's important for us to

have alignment on on the importance and so it'd be a good conversation i've had an issue in the past i think because i found some of these insulting and uh and so they feel unimportant because they're insulting like well of course kind of thing and so i think sometimes i i'm getting better at understanding why in the long term it's important but it it still sometimes feels insulting like if that's not where you're coming from then why are you here you know and i actually when you say that i remember our first conversation yeah i had this i brought i used the same thing two years ago it wasn't i think you called out that data why not 2020. our group historian right [Music] without question but there was discomfort with some of the way

things written well number one i'm open to rewriting it functions like this so it may sound disrespectful but it's really being cut and dry on some but you might listen again this is why i wanted to do this piece you might go you know what i've got a part of me and where we can have a conversation because what i've actually proposed is we come up with a date in a couple weeks and actually discuss how we scored level of horrors things that you think are missing things that you think need to be added and rewrite this over the next month or so and and and and and the new resolution now if if and when the board changes in november and into december we'll be going back over it again and resolving it again

but i think that that's really important as part of the feedback process the self-evaluation [Music] oh is that what it is let's take this home and read it and digest it a little bit right okay and then i don't see another maybe another opportunity where we can just sort of go through a few things that may i mean what was the word you used insulting yeah okay here's what i would say once you look at that i don't think we have to be in a race to get this done no i i think this and i think especially if we have new folks running through the board to engage in this conversation alongside you as as public to see and hear the conversation and so i would tell you that i had a tentatively scheduled

and i really really tend to tuesday august 16th for a special orbit to go over and when you say sit down and talk i i actually think that what i'd love to see us do is take and knowledge exactly wrong i don't want to rush do not rush go through it score what on scales one of the five that what you think we as a team a government team do is have been performance of it what's important of it and possibly make a note of how you would prefer reward and or remove because removal is okay too that's what the board thinks and also what's missing i'm sorry what did you suggest it's really i just i had put up this calendar tuesday august 16. and we already have an agenda through using 5 36

06230. so that i think that was the date that was that's pretty easy to move but yeah no but you know what shannon had made a comment to me right before he came in here that there was some other conflict but i would agree with trustee riley that it's not to be rushed but what i'm thinking about is giving you guys enough time to truly self score to determine where you really think is the level of importance that that statement that protocol that purpose uh that standard that role if it what level of importance it means and then adding and or even making notes on yours and what you think it should say because this really is ours when we did this two years ago i brought something i took something you had i brought

something for me and i said here's and that was a good start for us because i want to actually update this also right in this chapter any thoughts well yeah i'm going back to i'm struggling with what you mean by importance but i'm working on like let's take this one here it says we assume everyone in the room is here because they care about public education like that doesn't feel important to me but i don't think i'm i don't think i'm missing something right let's just take this respect not necessarily armored right okay but if you go out and you really actually study this that's an important point there are people they're not concerned about public education kids they have an agenda item it could be ethnic studies it could be critical i think or

critical race theory it could be replacement theory okay so actually that's going to turn up see here's where i'm going in your mind you're going yes it is yeah and see and i'd love to have that discussion when we come back that's what i'm saying i'm gonna say you give it a two i give it a four and then i come back and say let's look at this let's see your yes that was perfect because one person might go it's not all important or this is insulting it's not that's why it's not important another person this is important let me tell you why i think so and then if it's important one more thing but like if something's in not important and and i agree with that's not having this right let's also do that

but those discrepancies where maybe a board member is really a one or a two and a quarter of the five of the rest of the group you go okay what do you think what do you think about that and actually have that conversation because that's where we get more alignment that makes sense yeah that's that's president trump this is this is this is kind of i got to this a little bit because of my thinking about our conversation and i know that this is the same thing right but i thought about the importance piece that generated the conversation i said you remember when we used to meet for an adult beverage okay we get into those back in the pre-covered years 2016 to 2019 okay and we get into these really philosophical you and i

never we didn't always agree but we were able to have a dialogue and i've always felt that both of us sort of moved to the center of them i think that's what the purpose of this is but again if everybody sported a one or two you go you know what it may not have even the meaning to be in the doctor and the doctor or if if the conversation if you said well it doesn't mean it has little meaning to me or importance because it says this but you say well that's happening so that it had meaning for both of them right see that's the kind of confidence that's going to be a pretty intense conversation so we could do a saturday like but you know i'm trying to not take your saturdays from you

at all but what we do is we we digest this and then we'll come back and pick a date well what i'd love for you to do after that but i'd love for you to give me a date where you'll complete this oh give it to shannon so that we can do a compilation of it and then find a date to have a conversation i do feel like like in the second section on rules and responsibilities there's not enough information there so it says we carry out these responsibilities in each of the following areas and it says finance and that really isn't descriptive enough right and human resources even more problematic so here's what was saying that's why we wrote you know is there anything missing yeah right and so you you you give us

that feedback but then we talked about what all the details needed because of java finance and i probably have andreas they're going okay what do i need to make sure for the finance type or hr side whatever it might be right and so then we get into that more depth because i think that's really important because that's that's where we're addressing when you come in with an agenda maybe it's you know under one of those things right i think what i didn't want to do is change [Music] todd would you just uh confirm that the one through five rating that five means it's the most important yes five means man and i i like to do i like to do like this i champion this man it's important okay or it's important great yeah yeah

it's there i mean i wouldn't want to get rid of it two you know maybe i need to talk a little bit about more about this one i really don't think okay right it's that gives you a sense of it and if you think about performance fine we are rocking that thing man we are the champions of it we we're doing such a great job hey what we're doing good three you know we're doing it as average as it may be we'll do it two we could probably get a little better one i'm not moving right that's that's when you think about the scoops okay three could be like we've started the line we started alignment right but we're not where we want to be we would call it good i'm just using so you

might give it a three and that would be the discussion but i see that down what i'd say about it tying back to the chapter is the chapter says you got to be consistent you got to do that you hold this up accountable we will take we will also take last year's and show how you stored or not the individual scores but how you scored yourself award last year so you can see you can see that in comparison right and then we make adjustments to it what do you think sure so can i press on just a little bit how long do you think you need to to really go through this to really assess to really score to think about what it's missing and to to trustee riley's point not rush yeah my problem

i'll be very honest uh early early august yes really i have a little rule with my wife i don't bring this stuff i didn't even say would you guys like to get it in august 2018. yeah that's the second board meeting of the month yeah then we do a special board meeting and to review it sometime the week of september all i'm thinking is that things start to really ramp up and um well i could also press you to head out back to us this third day i mean i'm not saying what i'm saying is if you're worried about hey it's gonna get wrapped up and we have a little bit of summer still we can do something i could say have it back thursday night and then give us some time when we schedule

uh when are you going i'm going to be gone a few days at the beginning of august well what about the unless you see that but that defeats heaven we're just talking about what i'm saying how about something in between how about something that's fine i'll compromise if it's anything beyond let's say august 10th i'm fine you know i would what meets the time is the follow-up of that conversation exactly and you know if you just put it out three weeks i'm not going to look at it again for another two weeks right [Music] yeah it's like we do especially right now right i guess so i'm just gonna say this and all right so today's date is monday july 25th 25th can you have it to me by the end of next week which

is friday the 5th yes again i'm not trying to agree with you i don't want to rush the process i'm just asking this is not me no i can do whatever we need to do okay i'm also thinking of someone else okay i'm just gonna leave it at that that that may be it okay but if that's that's what we feel i can do whatever you guys want me to do let's get let's let's just kind of go around the table uh do you think that you could have this completely into shannon you're going to be gone a couple days i'll get it done so uh yes all right so let's do this let's set a date and then after that i will establish i will find a day for us and like i said

i have tentatively in my mind i thought uh the 16th or the 18th of august could be the 17th i was just thinking that week and that actually would give us plenty of time to compile but do you guys think about it i'll follow up one on one with you to finalize it in there so just a logistical issue i'm i'm not i don't i'm not anywhere near here during regular hours and so and i'm not gonna have it done by thirty years if we can send this to you the problem oh if you'd like that documentary oh sure i'll do that yeah so would anybody else like electronically i'm gonna run i thought i'm old i don't do that stuff yeah so i'll make sure i could even take this and scan it and

send it to uh shannon yeah that's it yeah that sounds great that sounds great okay shooting for a special meeting in the week of august 15th to do a first review that's what i'll call are you talking like a couple of hours or what how much time yeah probably a two-hour window just to go over the results start our conversation and then resk and then schedule another time that's what i'm thinking because i think to present i don't think we need to rush the conversations around this so um august 15 so what about putting it off one week one week because um in my case my work schedule changes and i've got a lot more flexibility the reason why i said that is until we off from board night we have a board meeting 25th

right so i'm really flexible guys that's tuesday is my last like regular uh no i'm talking the 16th no i think she's trying no i'm really getting mixed up here i'm talking about do you have any more let's see yeah i don't think i was on the fifth oh no the six no the 16th the 16th is my last really full day [Music] i really do agree that we don't want to have to rush it we want to get we'll get we'll compile these results and we'll create a conversation all right um the last part of the chapter is continuing board education and i think what's important and i just highlighted this when the the there are just right the beginning right there are two instances the boards tend to see the assistance from outside

consoles when things are not working or in crisis um yeah or to strengthen their governance system and and i think that we have done it i want to complement this i think we've done a really good job with our professional development our continuing board education um and i think it's really worked on strengthen our system i think it's been wonderful i i really am proud of it and i'm proud of you guys this time and commitment i'm proud of you reading i think what i want to make sure is is back to something you said president turnbull i want to make sure we're providing professional development so that we're not in crisis like when it says here when things are not working or or are in crisis i'd like us to always be thinking about

being proactive so that we don't fall into things or fall into crisis what do we need you know i think that we could talk about the professional development of our book talk about the professional development of going to csva annual education conference we can look it up we can talk about when we've had mike and amy here and work with us i was just reviewing just the other day some of the conversation we had around the poverty from last that's from last january some powerful learning we had together i'm really thinking but i want us just to stress that when we feel like who we're a little less safe before it gets not functioning or very hard talk about professional development and continue in our learning and continue our work i think what's really important

is and i i want to give a great compliment to people that really worked hard through this book and the discussion and so forth and so on but the thing is we're lifelong learners okay we have to model it we have to we have to model yeah it's in our evaluation we have to tell the community we're here to learn here to listen learn and then make decisions what we have are finishing this book i know there's one but i didn't finish it but i did finish because you maybe you you told me it's an important chapter okay but anyway but my point is is lying lifelong learners it is important for us to model that we want to get better and we don't have all the answers and that's why we have to listen

at times do more listening when we do these educational sessions versus doing a lot of talk we do a lot of talking from the book and that's great okay but i think we just got to keep that model going and i say we read another book and we have more discussions and we do we pick up two or three topics or whatever we want to call them as far as it's educational sessions and i think that'll help us culturally in the community and i think it will open it up to some parents now we may get some people coming in and they have an agenda and so forth and so on but hey so be it that's why we're here and so i give a big shout out that time and effort that all of

us in this room and lori and arizona have put forth from this book and the leadership of dr cutler to get us through this i feel very very good in interaction that we're good okay is there anything is there i probably probably should just wait um that's okay all i was gonna suggest is if you're really um trying to educate prospective board members or whatever um something that's come up in the past is what is the time commitment that is a pretty consistent question well i think earlier i think the government has to show that it does yeah yeah i think so many times here's what your month will do and this we're done in this many hours maybe to prepare the meeting or whatever and yeah actually that um that that table that todd

you put together that shows the calendar of the year like when certain things happen each each month too yeah i agree absolutely because larry and i both had a conversation with someone last time around that when they learned they realized you're gonna have to read a lot you have to come to meetings and you're gonna have to visit meet with the superintendent hey guys before we put closure to tonight the last chapter is right into the occasion and here's what i'd like i'd like to ask you to if you haven't already to make sure you read it i would like to do right into the occasion as a conversation as part of our last piece to updating our governance so what i mean is is as we make when we finalize our self-evaluation as we

make any changes from the self-evaluation to the handbook to the additions that we talked about tonight talking then about what rising to the occasion and so i'm thinking along the lines of we won't necessarily do that special meeting until september for sure maybe the end of september and then we choose our next book is that okay so read it but what i'm what i'd like to do is tie it together as a closure with both finishing updating our government's handbook finalizing what we think about our self-evaluation and then what it means to rise to the occasion and really thinking about what it means to lead now in these times and these changes did you want to talk about this in that week of the 15th at the same time that we're going over there i

would rather not do it it could be a very big discussion yeah i would rather not be conflicting what i'd rather do is work itself through all that because i think the final chapter which is that it's not very fun it's really quick we'll create a really forward thinking conversation in essence [Music] okay um board members anything else from the chapter this i i knew that we were going to do a little longer tonight that's why i would schedule it for an hour and a half um you know as i told that we wanted to make sure we had a little more time not to rush not feel rushed in the hour um it's a quarter after is there any other conversations on the floor for i am going to ask i think formally should

i ask now formally yes dr cutler are there any communications from the public thank you um so are we adjourning yes hey with that at 7 15 i joined this meeting of the lake tahoe unified board of education on july 5th
