Today's general comment will be item specific only. And Ms. Grajeda is also here, I'll note that. We'll go directly to the item specific comment, and the first person is Isabel Gonzalez. Are you here? Come on down, you'll have 2 minutes to speak once you begin. Isabel Gonzalez, please come on down. Ms. Gonzalez is going to speak in Spanish, so if you'd like to hear what she's saying in English, please put your hands up and we will get you a translation headset immediately. Okay. Listos,
gracias. I belong to ELA committee from my school and also with a SSC committee. I also support the parent liaison for schools and we have obtained thousands of signatures to bring back to school police. For this reason is why I've heard the voices of many parents that are worried because of the decisions that are being taken for the education of our students. Now, in this evaluation of the superintendent, um more so, we want an evaluation and results from you all, public servants, each and one of you from the school board of LAUSD. A physical exam, so we know if you have a heart or if you're just robots that are being manipulated. We want results from the detection of drugs because they're allowing the cons- for them to use drugs and arms, firearms inside and
outside around the schools and this is the proof. Uh the the the parent that came last time and she demonstrated that to you. We want results of a vision exam and audiology exam to make sure that you that they are supervising what's happening at the schools and if in reality they listen to the problems that are the same problems every year. We talk about or we talk and talk and it seems like you can't see, hear us, or talk to us. Thank you. Thank you for your time. Okay, the next speaker on tab one is Maria Daisy Ortiz. She signed up to speak remotely, but I do not have her on the line in front of me. Are you in the room, Ms. Maria Daisy Ortiz? No. Okay. Tab two, we have Maria Luisa Palma
calling in. Maria Luisa Palma, please press star six to unmute yourself. And you'll have two minutes to speak once you begin. Maria Luisa Palma. Good morning. My name is Maria Luisa Palma. I can only assume that the anticipated litigation you have on your agenda today is related to the tragic death of Kimberly Zavaleta. As we know, their family's attorney has brought forth to you a call for action on anti-bullying, increasing supervision on campus, and clear reporting on threats and violence, among other things. So, we ask you here once again, how many more? How much longer will it take before you accept your mistakes that were made? You continue to pay out very expensive settlements with education dollars that will not be able to use for other children's education. But, in some cases, perhaps in the
case of Kimberly, that those settlements will be merited, but there's nothing you can do to bring that child back to their family. There are so many ways in which your policies hurt children. We have the practices of PBIS, restorative justice, which we continue to tell you are not working. The tiered fidelity index is a sham process in which schools self-rate themselves. The changes to uh state law and willful defiance. UTLA directed the closures of all our schools during the pandemic, causing impressively huge amounts of harm to our students. And they, of course, requested and asked you board members to remove school police from campuses and you complied. We presented to your proposed resolution on behalf of community members for safety accountability plans. That has not occurred. So, who do you really work for? Who do
your policies benefit? In 2022, Ms. Kelly Gonez said on the record on defunding school police, quote, "If you're causing harm to a small group of students, that is enough to address the action that is causing harm, even unintentionally causing harm. So, when are you going to fix it? This is on you. Thank you for your time. Moving on to tab three. We have Diana Guillen in the audience. Come on down, Ms. Guillen. You'll have 2 minutes to speak when you begin. And then, after Ms. Guillen is Mr. Juan Magandi. Buenos días, miembros del board. Good morning, members of the board. My name is Diana Guillen and I represent I represent parents leasing for the school for the schools. Well, we know that you will have another day of negotiations with all the unions, but specially
we are worried about the teachers union. What type of decision makings will you make? Because five of you have your agenda that's compromised along with theirs. You don't have an community agenda. You have the agenda that has to do with the teachers unions and that is what they want. They want to have more personnel so that they can continue charging their tariffs and also they want the personnel to, well, for them not to be rectified or be called upon when something is going wrong. They want to have They want people that have a long time working at the district for it to be because of the time, not because of the results. And I believe that as a community we want results for our children. We want better academic results because that is not what's
going on. There are for people, the ones we know because honestly, you don't give the information in those black black masses that other people talk about. You don't we don't know what's being negotiated in there. You don't bring to light to what's got going on and the teachers union are saying, well, they make a little not to not enough money and this is a profession where if teachers don't like it, I believe that you change your profession. They should be negotiators. They should be engineers. I don't know any other thing that maybe pays them more because school is not for it to not it's not so you can make money. It's to help the community. It's for our children can have a better future in and the way we're doing things now, if you don't
ask results from the teacher and you don't renew that and you don't enforce results, then they will waste money as always. Children will be low academically and the community and there will be more crime or And you're saying we will defend the children so they don't get criminalized and you're taking them to crime because you're not giving them the education. That is what you're not understanding. Thank you. Thank you for your time, Mr. Magaña. Come on up. You have 2 minutes to speak. When you should begin. All right, Mr. Magaña, we're ready for you. Thank you. 2 minutes when you begin. Okay. Uh I'm counting to see how many personnel is and how many parents come to see what you're doing. And this is the same thing that happens at the parent committee. Every Everyone
is personnel. And you, too. Right? Oh. Oh, it's funny to celebrate a negotiation that's in a pact, black in a black mass where everything is agreed upon. And the problem is how are we going to share the cake, right? It's funny because there are candidates that don't have rivals in their campaigns. And you know what? They should They should have had the decency to pay a rival for at least to to to be the backup and to just to make it look like there's a competition. Do at least do that. Because you are doing a bad job. And you still have the decency to say that you are doing the job to help the community, the poor, the students. You're not doing any of that. It's a disgrace to know that there's a lot of
mediocrity and you don't have rivals. You know why? Because they are being financed by those groups. >> [snorts] >> Mafia groups that are the ones that are being paid by their campaigns and they don't allow to the democracy to be involved. They don't allow a parent to come and fix the educational problems in this district. What What is What is your What is What is your What information do you have? Well, I worked as a representative or a principal. Oh, how beautiful you've had you've worked in. When have you worked as When have you cleaned homes? When have you worked in the farms? When have you been persecuted by immigration? It's nice to come here and say, "Yes, I come from a poor family and my mom would sell here and she received welfare, but
thanks to LAUSD I'm a millionaire now and I have a good position now. You know what it is? It's a It's a laugh. You're laughing at the people that are fighting and making a living. >> concludes public comment. The time is now 11:13 a.m. and the board is going to recess into closed session. Thank you.
