001Okay, I'd like to go ahead and call the um regular meeting of the board of education for Martinez Unified School District to order. It is 5:30 on February 23rd. Do we have any public comments for close session? >> There are no public comments. >> Then we will adjourn to close session. Thank you. meeting. I have one item uh to report out for close session. On motion of member Logan Campbell, seconded by Annie Horic Martin, the board in closed session voted 50-0 to approve a confidential settlement agreement in the matter Martinez Unified School District versus um OAH number 2025110741 to resolve a special education dispute and demand for certain educationally related costs including attorney's fees where district receives received waiverss and releases of claims in exchange. Matthew, do you want to lead us in the pledge
002of >> allegiance? I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands nationy andice for all. Okay. Do we have any changes to the agenda? Yes, we have a letter for the action item AB the AB1200. We're adding a letter from the county office. CBO Canon will speak to it in his presentation as well as um an edited resolution number two, I'm sorry, resolution uh number 2026-17. It's for the um permanent interfund transfer from fund 20. So, another an edit. So, just an update >> and the correspondence. Andy's just going to talk about it in his presentation. >> That is correct. >> Okay. All right. Thank you. Um, do I have an motion? >> I'll move to approve the agenda as amended. >> Second. >> Student rep
003>> I. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. >> Next we have highlights and recognition. Um, do you want to introduce uh Los Huntus Elementary Arts students? Dr. Patrick. >> Uh, yes. And I think they're here. So, if we could have them come up. Our Los Huntus Elementary Arts students. And I see Principal Cresbow. Hi. How are you? I'm going to welcome everybody. And I've got two students, Leo F and Chloe Martin. Um, thank you for letting us present. Um, one thing that I do want to say is Las has been very fortunate to have an art teacher for the past two years who offers art lunch for our students on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Wednesday. Um, I often debate who gets to decide what beauty is. Um, at Lasis, all of
004our students get to actually participate and debate and decide what is actually beauty instead of leaving that to the wealthy and powerful. So, my children are the wealthy and powerful. Um, and they will become that as they experience more art in their lives. I'm gonna have Leo go first. Is that good? Perfect. Hello, my name is Leo F Simmons and I am a third grader in Miss Lutz's class at Lassumas Elementary School here in Martinez. Today I would like to share with you why I love attending our lunch bunch with Miss Reyes at last elementary. We have our lunch bunch at last zoomas on Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Wednesday during our lunch recess time. I love attending our lunch bunch with Miss Reyes because it is creative and inspiring. I love the art that
005everyone creates in class because everyone matters. You must be thinking, how about being number first? But we can't think about number first if we don't have any numbers. It's a kind, peaceful, and inspiring environment that everyone should love. What if you don't love it? You say, well, I say try something new and give it a chance. And art is beautiful. Art can't be rushed. But either way, everyone should have a chance to enjoy it. Hello. Happy Monday. My name is Chloe Martin and I am in third grade at Los Hunis Elementary School in Mrs. Redell's class. I would love to share with you why I love art lunch bunch at school. I love going to art lunch bunch because every it's very fun and you get to see the art teacher, Mrs. Reyes. Miss Reyes
006always has so many fun activities for for us. You get to do things like color, paint, crochet or weaving. Plus, if you're tired, Plus also you're tired from playing kickball, you get to stay inside indoors and relax and work with your friends on all the these fun activities. You also get to see other students from other classes and everyone is so kind. I also like talking taking home all of my arts creations because my mom puts them up on the fridge or the or in her bedroom. Last The last time I went to our lunch bunch, I created a rainbow with all the colors and I gave it to my mom. That's awesome. That sounds wonderful. I have a question for you. Do you get to eat while you're doing art or do you have
007to eat first and have less time to do your art? You can go up to the podium if you want. >> Normally do lunch first and then we get a option to do recess or library or lunch bunch. >> Wonderful. Wow. And I saw your picture. That was awesome. Do you ever do crocheting >> or do you just do pictures? Okay. Awesome. And did you bring anything? >> No. Okay. Well, thank you very much for sharing that. That sounds awesome. Oh, look at that. Awesome. Very nice. Well, we really appreciate it. You guys spoke very well. I love it. Thank you very much for coming. That was very brave. I I was just going to compliment them uh on their artwork and exceptional speaking skills. I've been up here a year and you guys did
008way better than I could have ever done. So, great job and thank you for coming here today. >> So, third grade is my favorite grade and you guys were fabulous. You're so expressive when you speak and um you made me want to come to your lunchtime art program. Sounds like a lot of fun. So, thank you for coming. >> Okay. Anybody else? No. Okay. Comments from our student representative >> at Los Hunus Elementary. Third grade students took their trip to the John Mir house last week. Loses had their Valentine's dance on Friday, February 6th. It was wonderful to see so many parents and students join for a fun night of dancing. Lasus Elementary also wants to thank the incredibly supportive community for participating in recent fundraisers at Jax and Otis Spunk Meer. Fifth grade students
009will perform the annual Dr. MLK Jr. musical this Friday and the Losas PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 24th at 5:30 p.m. Loses Elementary Spirit Week will start the week of March 2nd. John Mir Elementary students and families enjoyed enjoyed an evening of fun and dancing at their annual friendship dance. John Mir Elementary is celebrating kindness week with student peacekeepers and the school counselor. Oh, excuse me. Student peacekeepers and the school counselor planning and implementing lunchtime activities in conjunction with kindness week. Students are participating in spirit week. Students were recognized and celebrated for demonstrating fairness by earning PBIS tickets. These tickets provide students with the opportunity to select prizes at the end of the week, reinforcing positive behavior and encouraging continued growth. The May Amongst the Stars Black History Month assembly is on
010Friday, February 27th. The PTA meeting is on Tuesday, February 24th at 6 p.m. and the ELAC Academy is starting Monday and Tuesday of this week. John Sweat Elementary fifth graders took an environmental field trip on the Delta Discovery Educational Tour. Fourth graders are currently hands-on learning about the California Gold Rush and California history in Col. John Sweat Elementary students at all grade levels put on a wonderful performance of The Secret Garden through Missoula's Children's Theater. The second grade is headed to San Francisco to the Academy of Sciences. And the John Sweat Elementary walk and roll program is starting in March. Mel Park fourth grade classes are hosting Kids for the Bay lessons where they learn about environmental stewardship. They then take a walking field trip to a nearby park to learn about cleaning up and
011preventing pollution. Last week, Melo Park had their spirit day on Friday. It was multiples day where students dressed alike and twinned with each other or with teachers. Harvest of the month was presented to all classes. Students learned about potatoes and all of the other versatile ways that they are prepared. The fourth grade concert is this Tuesday and they're going to be performing songs of the gold rush. Students will be starting their one school, one book schoolwide event this week. Every student in the school received a copy of the same book and they'll be reading it together. And that's happiness according to Humphrey, which I actually read when I was in elementary school. This weekend, Melo Park has the special someone dance and special someone bowling events. Students get to invite a special adult in their
012lives to attend one of these events. Now, for my personal comments, I'm delighted to announce that Alhamra High School has elected my successor, M Walls. I've known him for years through AP classes and mock trial, and I cannot think of anyone else that I'd like to see succeed me on the board. Hopefully, we'll see him at the next few meetings. Uh, and then I can give you guys an official introduction. Um, senior year has been busy as always with sports starting and scholarship applications to do. I'm battling the everpresent affliction of senioritis along with, I'm sure, many of my classmates. But I'm excited to end the year strong and prepare for graduation. And finally, I'd like to remind everyone that there will be a celebratory concert for Black History Month this Saturday, February 28th, at
0137 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building at Alhhamra with many wonderful performers. I hope to see you all there. Thank you very much. So, you haven't heard any from college yet? You haven't heard any responses? I think next week. Okay. Well, good luck. I know you're going to do well. Okay. Let's see. Uh, do we have any organizational reports from MEA? How about from CSEA? Okay. Do we have any comments from the PTA? Okay. So, um, public comments. The public may address the board regarding any item within the jurisdiction of the board of education of the Martinez Unified School District. For items on the agenda, the public may comment at the time the board considers the agenda item. For items not on the agenda, the public may comment under public comment. These comments are limited
014to three minutes each. 20 minutes have been allocated for this portion of the agenda. Additional time is allowed at the end of the meeting if there was not enough time to speak during public comments. To comply with the Brown Act, the board may listen to comments from speakers, but can neither discuss nor take action on issues presented. Members of the board are very limited in their response to statements or questions by persons commenting on items not on the agenda. Okay. Do we have any changes to the consent calendar? No changes to the consent calendar. >> I did want to we used to have a board member that always recognized gift donations and we've been remiss in not doing that, but we had one from John Sweat PTA uh for New Leaf Community Science for $1,820.
015So, thank you for that. Uh do I have a motion to approve the consent calendar? >> Are you going to ask for public comment? >> Not for the consent calendar. >> Oh, sorry. >> Oh, were there any public comments? No, I didn't see any. No. I make a motion approve the consent calendar. >> I'll second it. >> Student rep. >> I. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. >> Okay. The first item um discussion item is the LCAP midyear update MUSD framework of focus teaching and learning. Amy Espinosa. Good evening board members and Dr. Patrick. Thank you. Tonight I'll be going through the midyear LCAP update for you. Just a reminder the background on the midyear LCAP um review. It began in 2023 with a Senate bill and tonight um I need to
016report out on the data related to our metrics as well as our midyear expenditures and our implementation data. Here you'll see um that we approved our budget on June 23rd, 2025 and the actuals here are listed on what has been spent up to the first interim. Just a reminder for the metrics, I'll be sharing if uh we have a known outcome, if it's in progress, or if it's been finalized. And you'll see that once we get to the metric slides. And then for the expenditures and implementation, it'll be similar showing um if it is has been finalized, complete or uh I will share there is one that is discontinued that you'll see just a reminder that our LCAP goal one is focused on academics. So here it here it is if you'd like to read
017it for yourself, but the main focus is academics across um all areas and competencies. We do have a lot of metrics and actions and so on each of the pages I'll be highlighting one of them rather than all of them. But if at the end you have any questions I can answer then I will do so. But on this page I'd like to look at the second metric listed here. You'll see this is a percent of all students in grades three through eight and 11 who met or exceeded standards on the state ELA and math assessments. You'll see a column listed baseline. That baseline, just a reminder, is from two years ago. And then our desired outcome is for the next year, which will be our third year of our three-year LCAP. So here with
018our midyear update, you'll see that for ELA, we're at 56.0. 07% of students met or exceeded standard for and then for math we're at 45.32. This is listed as in progress because if you see in the desired outcome column um we have 67% for ELA and 55% for math. And so that's our desired outcome. And so you'll see there on this page um I'd like to go through the metric the second one as well which is our California science test. This has changed over time because before we had the gauge right where we had the color coding and now we have the percent. And so we started with our baseline at 36.8 8 and our desired outcome is 51% and then our midyear update at this point in time is 39.78. So we continue to
019be in progress. On the next page of metrics for goal one, um I'd like to look at the last one. This is implementation of academic standards which is a local indicator. Just a reminder that we have multiple local indicators that are completed in a narrative form that are attached to the LCAP that I'll present in June. Here you'll see for the implementation of academic standards, there are three ratings. So there are three subcategories in this area. Our in our baseline year, our first rating was a three, our second was a four, and our third was a fifth. And as you can see for our current midyear update, we continue to be the same, but we have a desired outcome of a four, a five, and a five. So this continues to be in progress. Again,
020for metrics for goal one, graduation rate, you'll see we're staying pretty consistent here. We uh had our baseline at 95.8. We currently are at 95.1 and we are um have a desired outcome of 98%. So we continue to be in progress broad uh providing a broad course of study which is the second one listed here is 100% of students were maintaining that at this point in time. This a broad course of study includes um courses like AP courses, honors and this would be for our students in our stu specific students groups listed there for the metric and that is marked as a status final because we're continuing to maintain what our desired outcome is. Moving on to actions for goal one. You'll see that the implementation note is a little bit different than in the
021last slide. So this is fully implemented or partially implemented. You can see for our what we budgeted for the expenditure in the second column and the numbers in the third column go with our first interm which is from the December board meeting. And so those numbers have fluctuated and Andy will go through that as he um presents next next month I think it is on the second interim. So there you can see how what our expenditures have been up to that point in December based on our action steps. And so here you can see um that we have common assessments. That one is almost um completely spent and partially implemented. And common assessments here has to do more not just with spending the money but the implementation of our common assessments as well. Going on
022to um the next set of actions for goal one. You'll see across here we have fully implemented all the way down with the exception of algebra readiness and mastery which is not implementing. Um the decision was made at the high school level after the LCAP was written um the first year to not continue with offering algebra readiness and mastery and thus that's why that is listed as not implementing on to goal two which I should have mentioned in the first goal. This is a focus goal and our first goal is a broad goal. So our broad goals are for everyone. Our focus goals are for specific groups. And this group um is our English language learners. Here the metric um that I'd like to highlight is the reclassification rate. You can see that our baseline
023we were at 27% of EL students were reclassified based on the metrics um provided to us by the state. And we currently at the midyear have are at 35.5% and that is listed as final because we have surpassed what we had put our desired outcome to be. For the next set of metrics for EL, I wanted to focus in on the percent of secondary EL students reporting school connectedness and high expectations from the healthy kids survey. You'll see those numbers listed across the bottom and you shall be receiving um information on the outcome of the healthy kids survey from coordinator Ali in the coming month um from this year's information. But now you have a sneak preview because you have the midyear um update. Here you'll see our seventh graders are at 67% which is
024staying pretty close to where our baseline was. our 11th graders at 56, which is also very close to what our baseline was listed as for school connectedness. And then for high expectations, we're at 71 with a decrease and 67 with a decrease as well. And so you can see that um we didn't move in the direction we wanted to in that area. And so we'll be needing to look at trend data around that. And so that goal or that metric continues to be in progress. Then looking here at our action um steps, I wanted to point out that we have two that are planned. And so these are continuing to be put in place um through this school year. And for those of you who participate in the LCAP uh executive advisory committee, you know
025that our goals and actions depending on how where we are in status will roll into next year's LCAP based on our priorities. And so you can see that we have some here planned that we're fully implementing and then ongoing implementation should be the top one. Same here we have partially implemented and fully implemented. Um and the expenditures these tend to happen later in the year and so expenditures haven't didn't occur by December. For LCAP goal three this um goal is all around um equity inclusion and the feeling of being welcoming and having a healthy learning environment. And so thinking about attendance and suspension as well in this goal. This is a broad goal. So this is for all here. I'd like to highlight the first metric which is our chronic absenteeism rates. You'll continue to
026you'll see that our chronic absenteeism rates have um dramatically decreased. We our baseline was 17.3% and we are currently at 10.5%. So that is a very huge decrease with our desired outcome being 10%. So we're very close to that desired outcome. In this metric, you'll see that we have our unduplicated student groups uh pulled out so that we can look at those metrics individually. So you'll see for two or more races, our baseline was 18% and we've gone to 10.7%. So we've seen uh a dramatic decrease there. And you'll see that if we were looking at just that part of the outcome, we would have finalized that status. And so you can see that with our um student groups down below in the suspension as well. Looking at these metrics for goal three, I wanted
027to highlight the top one, which again is our healthy kids survey. We use a lot of this data throughout our LCAP to get a sense of um what our students are feeling when they are at school and how that um feeling impacts them. And so here we have our belonging and connectedness. Um our fifth graders, our baseline was 75%, we've gone up to 82%. So, we're trending in the correct um correct way, but you can see that um each one of the groups have gone up slightly for for this area and uh hopefully we'll make our desired outcome by the end of next year. Again, this is from the healthy kids survey. You'll see that we have our meaningful participation listed here, our academic motivation, and again our school connectedness. So looking at it across
028our um secondary uh students in particular. So you have our seventh, 9th, and our 11th graders listed here in all three of those areas. Again, our healthy kids survey. And this one is looking at the parental involvement. And so does the school encourage parental involvement? And so you'll see that we have some of these are trending in the right direction and some are not. And so thinking about how are we involving our parents within our school sites. This LCAP goal is not just based on students feeling welcome and belonging but also parents as well. This this metric continues to be in progress. And so looking at our action steps um for goal three, you can see that we have partial implementation and fully full implementation. And so our counseling support is one of our LCAP
029goals uh or action steps. And so you'll see that one listed across there which is fully implemented. And then our final actions for goal three are listed here with our school and facility safety which is um significant to all of our school sites ensuring that we have a safe welcoming environment. And so there is a significant amount of budget expenditures listed in that area with our actuals that we had spent by the first interim. So again, um, as always, we have our opportunities and challenges as we go through the school year. We're proud of the trend of our chronic absenteeism and our suspension rates as we've seen a a significant improvement as well as we have made growth in academics. And so we're continuing to think about the science indicator as we're seeing a minimal
030amount of growth in that um indicator which is new as well as our climate results from our healthy kids survey. >> Thank you very much. >> Um I had a question on the LCAP goal one actions. Um I just wanted to clarify the algebra readiness and mastery that was algebra 1A and 1B correct that we got rid of. No, >> it was called um algebra support. They ran it for one year prior to me taking my position. So I believe it was third so like four years ago. It was a class that a student would have taken in lie of an elective. And so why did we in lie of an elective? So they still can get tutoring and things like that. It's just you're not going to have that class because Correct. So that
031class the a section from their master um calendar or their master schedule was paid for out of the LCAP. They did not see growth or the results that they wanted to see with the students taking an algebra class and a math support class simultaneously and therefore they discontinued um wanting to provide that class. >> Okay. Thank you. And then um the credit recovery you said fully implemented. Um can you give me a little bit more because I know at one point in time we credit recovery we got reimbursed for ADA. Is that what this is referring to or No. >> No. That what you're referring to is what's called attendance recovery. And so that's a completely different that's not part of the LCAP. Credit recovery is when a student is in need of making up
032credits because of a class that they may have received a D or F in. And so this occurs throughout the school year um after school time. We pay for um teachers to support that as well as the summer school program. >> Perfect. Thank you. Um questions? >> Yeah, I just have one. It's been a little bit since I've been on this committee, so I know that there's probably a really good answer for this that I just don't remember. >> Always welcome. We meet next Wednesday. >> Uh when like in the English language learners where we are saying we're meeting our metrics or with chronic absenteeism when where we're really close, the committee then has a choice. It's not like okay, done and now like we met it so we don't have any goals around that.
033we could bring that goal back and just modify it for another metric or how does that typically work and is it kind of a case by case? So if we if it's a metric that we've met, we continue to keep the baseline the same. So we don't change the baseline, but when we write our narrative around the LCAP toward the end of the year, then we would document that we had met our metric that we were continuing to of course we're not going to say, "Oh, okay, great. We reclassify 35%. No worry, we don't need to do reclassification now. But then we continue to want to see growth and trend in the right direction. Same for chronic absenteeism. Once we've met the metric, we don't change what our desired outcome is until we rewrite our
034three-year LCAP, which will be at the end of next school year. Oh, and then let me add just real quick because this might answer someone else's questions. If an action is ineffective, for example, once we get to the third year, then we cannot roll the action over, but the metrics are required by the state. And so the metrics are laid out pretty much. These are your metrics and then we need to show how what our data is coming from. Sorry, >> Logan, do you have any questions? >> No. Brenda, >> I this is probably a silly question, but is the information that you're giving us, the data, is that from the middle of the year from district assessments? >> The data that uh that's shown, it'll tell you exactly what it's from. So, for example,
035if it's FastBridge, it'll say winter or fall. So, that will tell you what part of the year we took it from. If it's CASP data, that means it came from the 2025 CASP because that's our most recent CASP. Same for any dashboard data. So, chronic absenteeism, suspension rate, all that is coming from the dashboard that was just released in November. >> And so, it should list there for healthy kids survey. That's coming from the results of the healthy kids survey that was taken this fall. Um, so fall of 2025. So my follow-up question then is um I was looking at page 15 the reclassification rate as well as other um areas. How how does the improvement that we're seeing how do we have any idea how that's going to come out with CASP? So, if
036we're we're not measuring, they're not all measured through CASP, but if I have a reclassification rate that's gone way up, am I expecting to see my English learners uh CASP scores come up also in ELA? >> If I'm reclassified, I'm no longer an English learner. >> Okay. So, they'll be pulled out. So, how is that going to affect our dashboard in terms of scores? it could potentially affect the dashboard in terms of the student group like the number of population. So let's say we were right on the cusp of having a student group. We were at 37 e students. We ended up um reclassifying 10 of them. That puts us in the end number that doesn't give us a score any longer on the dashboard. That would that would be extreme. That wouldn't happen. But
037how this relates to the dashboard is the number of students within that student group that are part of the count. So remember the dashboard isn't necessarily our CASP scores. That's separate. It's how they do on the CAS that the CASP scores come out in on a different platform. The dashboard is just saying how many students in a student group met or exceeded performance and how close to standard they were. So it's complete it's a completely different metric than if we were looking at meets or exceeds on the CASP. >> So I guess what I was trying to get at is if we are pulling these students out so they're no longer going to be part of um English learners for CASP, right? they're going to be >> put into whatever other group >> maybe. >>
038Is that going to Yeah. Is that going to >> is that going to affect our scores for that subgroup then? >> It seems to me that if you're pulling out all the kids that are have been reclassified that we may see lower scores. You potentially have, but you have to remember on the dashboard for example and even CASP you're only looking at particular grade levels. So, if we had a cluster of English learners, let's say in eighth grade, we they'll be pulled out anyways because they're ninth graders the following year, for example. Do you see what I mean? So, that changes our student group no matter what because ninth graders are not taking the CASP and therefore wouldn't be in the academic parts of the dashboard either. And so there's always a flux with the
039academic portions because you're only talking about third through 8th grade and 11th grade. So there's these gaps. So thinking about your student groups, that's why they're pulling your student groups, looking at the in number of your student groups and then determining the percentage that those students are away from standard on the dashboard and or meeting or exceeding standard on the >> It's not going to affect it. You're basically saying it because we're constantly going on. There's other things that >> there's other variables that would affect it before. Yes. >> Thank you, >> Amy. There's a there's a couple of metrics that say um planned and a couple that say ongoing. What is the difference between those? And does because it's a three-year LCAP, does that mean that everything all of them are going to be
040completed by the end of next year? By the end of next year, we'll give a final on all of them, no matter if they were ongoing or planned. So ongoing meant that we have started to establish the protocols and what was occurring. I don't have one right in front of me to say use as an example. And planned means we haven't moved forward with it yet. I think like our multicultural celebration says planned and that's because we haven't had it yet and so we don't know what the expenditures will be exactly for that. >> Matthew, did you have any questions? No. Okay. Public comments on that? No. Okay. So, we're going to go ahead and um close the regular meeting and we're going to go ahead and open up the public hearing. and Andy is
041going to do that for us. >> Uh, thank you, President Ber and members of the board. Tonight, I'm presenting the AB1200 public disclosure that's associated with the tenative agreements reached with Martinez Education Association and CSEA Chapter 99. Uh this disclosure reflects a 2% ongoing raise effective July 1st, 2025 along with the statutory benefits that correspond to that. The total cost of the settlement along with other adjustments um that are going to be seen in the second interim um report next week or two weeks from now um that also includes the $2.5 million reduction that was approved earlier this month. um will make the cost of this settlement increase to about $875,000. Um after these adjustments, um our multi-year projection does show that we can afford this agreement in this current year and in the next
042two subsequent years um which means that we can stay above our 3% minimum um reserve amount um which is what the contraosta county of office education was reviewing. Um, so the amendment tonight, that letter is from the Office of Education and it's their role to review our financial data when we go through a salary settlement and they have determined that we can meet our fiscal obligations like we had thought we could. Um, and at the same time though, they're encouraging us to continue to look um at the budget that's coming up with some caution um for all the reasons that you already know that it's not established how we're receiving those funds, but it looks like it'll be mostly one time and we need to be mindful of that as we get into the budget
043planning period that'll end around June. But ultimately, this disclosure helps us to meet all of the requirements under AB1200. And so tonight, um I'm asking that the board approve this resolution or uh this disclosure. And I'm happy to answer any questions that the board may have. >> We're actually going to approve it afterwards in an action item. Correct. Right. Um do I have any public comment? Sarah Stafford. Um, in the public hearing information, it's the wrong date. Settlement includes a salary schedule increase of 2% effective July 1st, 2026 through June 30th, 2026. >> The one attached to our agenda online says July 1st, 2023. Show me the area you're looking at again. >> Right there. >> Yes. Um, and the purpose of that is because the actual the CBA is effective from 2023 to 2026.
044So, it's the three-year agreement. So, that is just indicating that that is the first year of this agreement because what we're doing is we're amending that agreement with this salary settlement >> on the >> is it on the agenda? >> On the agenda summary, not on the attachment, right? In the text it says effective July 126 through June. >> Thank you. >> Yep. Thank you for pointing that out. Do you mind filling out a public comment card too? Um okay. So we can correct that. I guess yeah it's going to be too bad. Okay. Um any questions from the board? Then we will go ahead and close the public hearing and we will resume our regular meeting. Uh so the first action item is in regards to AB1200 disclosure for tenative salary agreements. Um Andy
045Cannon and you just explained this. Um do we have any questions? Do I have public comment? Does anyone want to make a motion? I will move to approve um the AB1200 disclosure for the tenative salary agreements. >> Second >> student rep if you vote on it or not. >> I >> all those in favor >> I so moved. >> I think sorry I don't think you can vote on that. I won't do these ratifications either. Sorry. Um, next up we have the ratification of 2526 reopener contract between MEA and um, MUSD. Janelle Ayat. >> Good evening. This is the first of many items I have for you tonight to consider. This is the um, consideration of approval of our tenative agreement with the Martinez Education Association um, which represents our certificated unit. Um attached here
046you have the um overall tenative agreement which indicates the changes to the contract that were negotiated through our reopener negotiation sessions as well as the associated um salary schedules that reflect the 2% um salary increase. We're asking the board to approve the TA and the salary schedules tonight. >> Thank you. Board questions, public comment. Do I have a motion? >> I'll move to approve the ratification of the 2526 reopener contract between MEA and Martinez Unified. >> I'll second it. All in favor? >> I. >> So moved. Next up, we have ratification of 202526 reopener contract between CSEA and MUSD Janelle Ayat. This item reflects the um tenative agreement between the district and our classified unit CSEA chapter 99. Um, attached here are is the overall TA with the articles that were negotiated through our reopener
047um, negotiation sessions as well as the updated salary schedules that reflect the changes in the um, negotiated salary increase which is 2% retro to July 1, 2025. And we're asking the board to approve the TA and the associated salary schedules. Thank you. Any board questions, public comments? I'll make a motion or um to ratify 2526 reopener contract between CSEA chapter 99 and MUSD. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I so moved. Next up, we have ratification of meet and confer process between the supervisory confidential unit and MUSD Janelle Ayat. Tonight, I'm also asking the board to consider approval of the tenative agreement with our supervisory confidential unit. This um we engage in a meet and confer process with our confidential classified employees. Um and um the agreement is for a 2% salary uh
048increase retro to July 1, 2025. So tonight um we're asking the board to approve the meet and confer as well as the um revised salary schedules. >> Thank you. Any questions? Board questions? No. Public comment. Can I have a motion? I'll move to approve the mean and confer between um the confidential supervisory unit and MUSD. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. >> So moved. >> Next up we have ratification of meet and confer process between Martinez Association of School Administrators and MUSD Janelle Ayat. Uh we have engaged in the meet and confer process with our um MASA unit which represents all of our management both certificated and classified management and have a TA for the 2526 school year which reflects the salary increase of 2% to retro to July 1, 2025 and
049status quo for benefits. Um we're asking the board to approve the TA and the associated salary schedule for this school year. >> Thank you. Any board questions? Public comment. Do we have a motion? >> I'll move to approve the ratification of meet and confer process between uh MASA and MUSD. >> I'll second. All those in favor? >> I so moved. >> Next up, we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-12. Eliminate and or decrease the number of certificated employees due to a reduction or elimination of particular kinds of services. Janelle Ayat. Switching gears here. Um we are we have reviewed our um particular kinds of services that we believe we need for next school year and have identified certain positions to be eliminated or reduced and those are reflected in the attacked resolution 2026-12. Um
050this will resolution will impact certain certificated employees who are currently employed leading to a reduction in staff um due to the elimination or reduction in need of these specific services. Um the attached resolution outlines the specific impacts and details the implementation of these reductions. >> Thank you. Any board questions? Public comment. Do I have a motion? I make a motion to adopt resolution number two thou 2026-12. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. >> So moved. Re. Next up, we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-13 regarding the discontinuence of classified employees due to a lack of work andor funds. Janelle Ayat. >> Under education code, um the district may provide notice of layoff to classified employees due to lack of work or lack of funds. And we have um identified the need
051to lay off or reduce positions for the 2627 school year. Um the resolution before you 26 2026-13 identifies the specific positions that will be affected by the layoff or reduction. We are asking the board to approve this resolution authorizing the elimination and/or reduction of the number of classified employees identified on the attached resolution. Thank you. Board questions, public comments. I'll make a motion to approve the resolution 2026-13. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. Next up, we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-14 regarding the decrease in work year of certificated administrative employees. Janelle Ayat. >> As part of the budget reduction process and following a review of administrative workload and fiscal conditions, the district has determined that certain certificated administrative positions may be assigned a reduced work year beginning with
052the 26 27th school year with a corresponding proportional adjustment in annual salary. As a result, implementing this resolution will impact certain certificated administrative um employees who are currently employed leading to a reduction in work year. This action does not constitute a layoff or reduction in PKS and is not disciplinary in nature. The attached resolution outlines the specific impacts and details the implementation of the decrease in work year for the 2627 school year. >> Thank you. Board questions, public comment. Do I have a motion? >> Make a motion to approve resolution number 2026-14. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. Next up, review and adoption of resolution 2026-21 regarding the decrease in the work year of classified administrative employees. Janelle Ayat. This specific resolution is similar to the previous one except that
053it's specific to the classified administrative unit and reflects the reduction in work year from 261 days to 260 work days starting with the 2627 school year. Again, this is not a layoff or a partial layoff and is not disciplinary in nature and the resolution outlines the the specific impacts as well as the implementation of the reduced work year for our classified um administrators. Thank you. Any board questions? Public comment. Do I have a motion? >> I make a motion to approve resolution 2026-21. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. >> Next, we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-9 for one furlow day for certain management employees during 2627 school year. Janelle Ayat. Also, as part of the budget reduction process, the board determined that implementing a limited furlow day for
054certain management positions was a reasonable and prudent fiscal decision um while trying to reduce expenditures. Um this resolution 2026-9 outlines the implementation of a one-day furlow for the 2627 school year for the district's management employees who did not have a reduced work year as approved in the prior resolutions. um and for contracted management employees as identified in the schedule attached to the resolution. >> Thank you. Any board comments, >> public comments? All right, I'll make a motion to approve resolution 2026-9. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I so moved. >> Next, review and approval of administrative salary schedule for 2627 school year. Janelle I >> my final item for the evening. Um this item is being brought now that the board has approved the prior resolutions um regarding the decrease in work year
055for certain certificated and classified management employees as well as approving the one-day furlow for certain management employees. We are asking the board to consider and approve the administrative salary schedule for the 2627 school year which is updated to reflect those corresponding reductions. Okay. Thank you. Any board questions? Public comment. I'll make a motion to approve the administrative salary schedule for 2627 school year. >> Second. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. Next we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-17 authorizing a permanent interfund transfer from fund 20 special reserve for postemployment benefits to fund 01. This is presented by Andy Cannon. >> Uh thank you. So tonight resolution 26-17 with its amendment is being brought forward to the board. As you may recall, during the budget reduction process, the board determined that this
056item could be brought to for um a proposal for dis for a district fiscal reduction plan. It was identified as one step that we could use in order to reduce the number of staff reductions for the 2627 year. Um for your reference, fund 20 is specifically designed for our retiree benefits or future obligation program, and we determined $420,000 would be moved into the general fund. Um, and again, these resources will be used to help with deficit spending and to avoid unnecessary layoffs of staff. Um, so tonight we ask the board to approve resolution 2026-17 as amended. >> Thank you. Do we have any board questions? Public comment. >> Do I have a motion? >> Make a motion to approve resolution 2026-17. >> Second. Can the student rep vote on this? This isn't salary anymore, right?
057>> Yes. Yep. So, student rep. >> All those in favor? >> I so moved. Aren't you glad to be voting again? >> Uh, let's see. Okay. Review and adoption of resolution 2026-18 authorization for sale and issuance of not to exceed 45 million. Right. Aggregate principal amount of general obligation refunding bonds. Y Andy Cannon. >> I thought you were going to read the whole title. That's >> No, I'm not. >> Janelle has more resolutions, but I have the longest title for tonight. Um, so we are pleased to bring this to the board this evening. Um 2618 um authorizes the board to refund $45 million in general obligation bonds. That means that we're refinancing those. Um currently two of these bonds that were sold in the past have a rate of about 4.1% and we believe that
058we should be somewhere near the 3.6% rate when these are refinanced. In total, that puts us somewhere in a savings market of 2.5 to$3 million for these two different bonds. and that is direct savings for the taxpayers and those that supported um the bond measures um throughout Martinez. Um and this is a continued effort by the board and district leadership that when we have an opportunity to refund bonds, we choose to take it. Um you may recall that in 2024 we had a bond refund where we saved taxpayers almost $800,000. So, we are looking at within a within a year or two, we will have saved the community of Martinez almost $4 million um on these bonds. Um and with that, I want to take a moment to express that we appreciate um the citizens
059of Martinez, those that support a very good, strong, and healthy facility program for our schools. Um and it is paying off and will continue to pay off um for a seable foreseeable future. Um, as always, we'll continue to monitor the markets and when we have an opportunity to refund, we're going to do that. Um, but tonight, it's my pleasure to bring forward 202618 resolution um with um district and the board being able to refund $45 million in general obligation refunding bonds. >> Thank you, Andy. Isn't it nice to give a good presentation, happy one? Um yeah, I did what you said about the um community to um approve these bonds and so I'm very excited to see that and that's a good savings. So, thank you very much for keeping on top of that. Um
060any other board questions, public comments? Do I have a motion? >> Make a motion to approve resolution 2026-18. >> Second. >> Student FA student rep >> I. All those in favor? >> I so moved. >> Next we have review and adoption of resolution 2026-20 approval of piggyback agreement with Benyan Sports Services for Alhamra High School synthetic track surfacing project. Andy Cannon. >> Uh resolution 2620 represents the final contracted portion of the Alhhamra High School track and field and tennis court project. The previous resolutions and projects included the infrastructure of building and designing the new track and field area. Um we also had the um synthetic surface that's going to go the inside of the track. This last contract will be the actual surfacing of the running track area. Um it'll include the track subsurface like
061I said before and with these components now underway, this is the final phase for this contract of at least getting it approved. Um, so we recommend tonight that 2620 resolution in an amount not to exceed $627,000 26, excuse me, 627,264 be approved. >> Thank you very much. This is definitely needed, so I'm excited to see it here. Um, any board comments, public comments? Do we have a motion? I'll move to approve resolution 2026-20. >> I'll second. >> Student rep. >> I. >> All those in favor? >> I. So moved. Okay. Next we have CSBA delegate assembly election form. Um I'm presenting this one. So um we normally get um normally we do this on a um discussion and then we have a vote at the next meeting. However, at this particular time, we have three
062openings for delegate assembly and three incumbents. So, there's not a lot of discussion necessary unless you want to discuss it or either someone you don't want to vote for. Um, so just bringing this forth if everyone's had a chance to look at their packets and um make a decision on this. There any questions? Any public comment? I'll just I'll just say that they're all incumbents and I know they all do a lot. I' I've met all of them. They all do a lot for their boards and um this is a big time commitment. So, it's nice that people are willing to do it. >> I agree. Yes. >> And with that, I make a motion to um approve the uh the uh CSBA delegate ballot. >> Second. >> Student rep? >> I. >> All those
063in favor? I so moved. Okay. Next up, we have a superintendent report. >> Thank you, Trusty, president, board members, staff, and community. I am going to report on the governance actions for the 2526 school year. And I'll start by um saying being fully transparent. Um, I have a requirement with staff to not exceed 10 slides, but this does because I just couldn't leave things off the list, but I'm not going to speak to every single item. I will go through it as quickly as possible and then entertain any questions um if you have them. I also want to take a moment to turn your attention to the very last slide uh before it says questions. Um, I created a legend because we I use quite a few acronyms just in case so you know what
064I'm referring to when I use an acronym. All right. So, thank you Joe. So, the governance actions are aligned to four different areas of focus. So before we go through the slides, I just want to highlight um the areas are teaching and learning, safe and supportive schools, sound fiscal management, and community engagement. So you'll see as we go through the slide presentation, we're focusing on those key four areas. All right. So for goal one, um this particular uh area of focus has four different slides. Um but we I want to highlight a couple of things that um we are doing that I think we are doing a really phenomenal job in and that is um making sure that um we are have we've improved in our CAS math scores in sixth seventh and e 8th
065and third grade. Um you when you visit classrooms you will see that our teachers are using the LL intervention at 75% and of course we're going through a new textbook adoption for math and we have approximately 13 teachers participating and you also can see that we have you know a variety of of things that we're doing that are to help align instruct our instructional practice and to encourage and promote cohesion throughout the district. So, we have um our site visits and I when I was talking with the team because we typically go um in teams to visit um but I think Amy goes every time. So, anytime anyone can't go, someone is always there to see what's happening in classrooms, to respond to questions, to um be a think partner or whatever. just ensuring that
066all students have the resources and teachers have what they need to teach in their classes. And so we have visited um all of our campuses at least three times. And so we make it a point to go on a regular basis. Um I was at two campuses today. One not to visit classrooms, but I did get into some classrooms and that is one of my favorite things to do. So very happy to say we're doing that. Um we are also working on developing ELA pacing guides. So it's in progress. Um we are working on aligning benchmark assessments. Some of that has happened for us as a result of some of the stakes work the state's work around our screeners and being able to identify where students are in certain academic areas. But we are also
067developing our own um assessments that all of our students will be doing on a regular basis to make sure that we're hitting those instructional goals. Um as well as we are currently developing a walkthrough form and it is in progress. We do have um a template. We haven't rolled it out because we're still playing with it, massaging it, making edits as necessary. Next slide, please. uh other areas and I won't speak to everything here but you can see that we have a lot of academic um resources that we use in classrooms. So we're using the our youth life uh phonics pilot. We have um our intervention again for for English language arts and 79% of our teachers are actively using and I think it's really important to highlight that our Tulsa is um offering support
068in ELA across our school district and um serves in a variety of different uh capacities to ensure that um students um are getting what they need academically and teachers are receiving academic support as well. And um we also have our ELD um ed services coordinator who has completed four of five trainings for six of seven of our schools. Next slide, please. Um, this is a really what we're doing around special education is really critical and it it really should be highlighted because I know that it's something that school districts across the state of California are struggling with because we all know that while we see that um our students and their needs um our special needs students, they it those numbers continue to go up and funding is less and less um we are school
069districts are having to do um a lot to provide services for students with very limited resources. And so one of the things we really want to be intentional about is making sure that our students are um having you know access to um a gened experience and inclusive model and so the least restrictive environment. And I'm happy to say that um right now we're seeing an increase in the percentage of students that are having access to general ed and you can see the numbers. Um but I want to highlight specifically that um we areif we started at 51.1% to the goal was to get to 60% for 24 25 um I'm sorry for 2526 um and you know we are really close to meeting that goal. I believe we are actually at that 60% mark. So,
070we're doing the things that we said. We're focusing in the areas that we assured um the board we would be. And so, I'm just happy to report that. We also have two additional co-taught um geometry classes um that we're going to be adding for the 2627 school year. Um and um expanding co-op math for 2728. So, this is a succession plan that we're continuing to build on. So everything is not happening in one year, but we're definitely um heading in that right direction. Um and another thing that I think we really need to acknowledge is that we're reducing skills for bio and history sessions. So when we're talking about very similar to making those adjustments in LCAP with reducing some of those um classes that are not meeting the muster and not moving students and
071ensuring that they're receiving, you know, high quality educational experiences that move reducing those classes and enhancing students experiences by giving them access to regular edwards ensuring that they're receiving quality education. So, we're really excited about that. Next slide, please. Um, of course, in um evaluation, you know, the state changed uh the uh let's see, the California teaching profession changed their um uh standards. And so, our our staff has been trained on the new evaluation handbook with those updated standards. We're also really ensuring um a open regular communication to administrative um cabinet on evaluation timelines because evaluations are critical as well as um our internal e edte website which is is currently under development and our tech department is working really closely with the team the school site teams to ensure that we're ready for state
072testing across all of our schools. All right, next slide. All right, the next goal for safe and supported schools. So, um, everyone is aware and you approved tonight. Thank you very much. The updated immigration policies which have to be published by March 1st with the California Department of Education. So, we'll take care of that right away. Um, we also have our standard response protocols in place. We have new teacher orientation training and also training in our August and October uh PD days. Um we open the year with um a big task of having to put together those trauma kits and to get them into classrooms as outlined by SB868. So that has happened. We continue to collaborate with the Martinez Police Department. They've worked very closely with us by attending meetings with the board, attending
073community meetings, um just being accessible whenever there are challenges that are happening in the community, making sure that we know um if there's ever a question about safety. We are always notified in a timely manner. We really appreciate the Martinez Police Department and that collaborative relationship that has been established. Um, we also are doing the administrative council tabletop training, SRP exercises as well as the PTA safety champions um, at every site. They also assisted with replenishing emergency supplies. So, we're really appreciative of our PTAs. They really, really support us in a way that is just amazing. We're thankful and we don't take it for granted. Next slide please. And then of course you can see Andy has been before us in various meetings asking for approval, sharing and providing updates about some of the measure
074O modernization projects as well as um you know just making sure that our facilities are topnotch. Um and I just you know want to acknowledge his hard work and his and the team. They work really diligently and not only addressing these things that are highlighted in the slide, but also just being very responsive to community s concerns that sometimes arise. So just really celebrating and acknowledging that commitment to ensuring that our facilities and that we're good partners with our city um you know whether it's the garden or individual neighbors that have concerns about things that are happening with our facilities. Just being responsive to those needs is really important. um you know because we exist in the community, we're an asset to the community and so we always want to continue to promote and celebrate
075those relationships. So I just want to highlight that. Next slide, please. Um again, supporting safe and supportive um schools around areas of climate and attendance. And as you just heard in our LCAP update, we are doing some remarkable work around attendance, but we have more work to do in climate. And so um we're looking at expanding PBIS to um you know to our sites and we recently expanded this year to um John Mir and Alhhamra and things are moving along um well for those two sites and we're seeing um evidence of that with you know just those little data points and when you visit campuses and seeing the messages and how it's being received by students being responsible, being respectful, being safe. Um, you know, it's that's one of the key things is to get
076students to take responsibility for their own actions. So, that's something that we're really um proud of and we want to continue to pro promote. Um, we also uh want to highlight a strengthened safety communication system as well as um updating our social media policy. Thank you very much, governing board. And um working on the practice roll out, all of those things that's new, but those are things around ensuring school safety and improving climate because, you know, we want our students to engage and access all of those common ways of communicating in in today's current society. But it also we also know it has to be measured. It has to be respectful. It has to be thoughtful and it has to be safe for kids. So we're really pleased about our work around that. Next slide
077please. Our third goal is sound fiscal management. and everyone in this room. I I you know was here for some of the really hard conversations and the um ideas and thoughts around you know fiscal management and you know we listened and we heard the community and we're continuing to try to be responsive. But these are some of the things that we're doing to ensure fiscal management and that is the collaboration between um business and personnel on staffing um successful negotiations with our bargaining units, positive budget certifications that you heard that notice that I shared from the county office. Um even the recent approval of our uh negotiation settlements and saying that we will have a you know sound budget for the next three years. Those are all very positive um attributes that lead to sound
078fiscal management as well as um strengthening fiscal transparency um you know our budget oversight work that we will continue to do and enhance and make better. So, we've been listening to the community around um you know, the process and and taking some of that critical feedback and we're just going to go back to the drawing board and and make it better. Um but we we do really u want to highlight that having that as a process um does lead to more transparency and allowing you as the governing board to hear more more voices around the budget and to consider those voices when making decisions. Um, this one I'm extremely excited about because I know that school districts across the state continue to really struggle with attendance and our attendance is up. We started at the
079beginning of the year with I believe it was 90 94.2 attendance rate. It is now at 96.2. Um, and we know that, um, for next year, the goal was to get to 97%, we might get there sooner. So, I'm very excited about that because we know that students that come to school, they're having more academic opportunities to learn and we want students in seats. We want students to learn. That is our that is why we're here. So, I'm excited about that. Also want to highlight the expanded use of digital tools for budget as well as um we are really working to reduce those electronic expense claims um that are scheduled for launching the 2627 fiscal year and um Joe is working really hard on that and we really appreciate all of his efforts and I
080wanted to highlight that in this presentation. Next slide sir. Thank you. Um uh the other thing there's there's a lot happening around the the sound fiscal management and um we're always thinking of revenue enhancements and while we put in the slide the 360,000 um that does not include grants because you know not only do we receive grants from like our um MEF and MRC and we receive support from Kowanas and Rotary and just a variety of different community organizations and agencies that serve this community, but we also have um you know grants that come through the state. And so we I just dropped that in there because that is something that leads to revenue enhancement, but that that we really it doesn't that 360,000 does not include what we get from grants because that grant
081money is more vast. Um, but you can see all of the various connections and um, the contributors to our increased revenues and we're going to just continue to look for ways to enhance that. I'm very excited about that as well. Next slide, please. Um, so technology and cost reduction. So, we're looking at um a ways that we can utilize and access technology, but maybe looking at it very differently in terms of not necessarily buying devices that students take home, but maybe going back and looking at, hey, these devices are better serve students in the classroom. will mean saving and being able to make sure that students have access to technology and that they're able to utilize it during the time of instruction is critical for the district. Um but we also want to um we're
082so we're looking at backup solutions and we're also working very closely um in our sped department working closely with our CBO to ensure that we're aligning FTE with student needs so that we're not overstaffed but we actually have the staff that we need and they're providing the services for students. Next slide please. All right, community engagement. So, that's really important. So, um we're you we're continuing to utilize Parent Square as a central communication hub. Um we've increased our um presence on Parent Square and social media. Um we've presented for CAC for for sped um the for transitions, diplomas, and pathways. Um, we've also meet with parents and community members in a variety of different ways. Next slide, please. I think I highlight some of those. Um, our negotiation updates are shared after each session. We
083have our monthly HR and bargaining unit leadership meetings and um, we also have our budget advisory committee um, which are directly for stakeholder input. Next slide, please. Um, and lastly, we've held two of four LCAP, ECAC, EAC meetings, two of four curriculum advisory council meetings, DAC, DEI, and educational services newsletter, as well as collaboration with PTA council, MEF, MRC, Kowanas, Rotate, Rotary, Boys and Girls Club, and the city of Martinez uh, school liaison committee. So, lots going on. Um, we're very busy, very involved, and very, um, excited as ambassadors for MUSD. And this concludes my report. And of course, I'll entertain any questions. Thank you very much. It was very informative. Um, do we have any board questions? >> Um, thank you for that very informative report. That was a lot of information. Um, and
084I know you're very busy, which is shown in your report and um, every the whole team is very busy. Um it this is kind of maybe more of a comment than a question, but as far as community engagement, I recall a couple meetings ago, I think. Um one of the students made a public comment about students not getting notification of board meetings and that was only on Parent Square and I'm wondering is that the case and is there more we can do maybe to kind of also keep the students informed about the different things going on in the district, not just at their school? Yes, I I do recall I took notes of that and so yes, we can definitely make sure that that's happening. I just don't recall if we talked about it right
085away, but I'll make sure that we we get right on it. >> Okay, that's great. Um yeah, and I I think um Parent Square has been a really um good tool for parents. I know um since I'm don't have a child in the district anymore, um it I get notifications only because I'm on the board. So, I appreciate also that we have increased social media use and um some of the things on the website and stuff like that because that's really the only way that community members that don't have children in the schools are going to know what's going on. >> So, thank you for all of that. >> Thank you. >> The students get >> I was I'm sorry. I was just going to add to what she said. Sorry. Um the students get
086like parent square but it's what's it called? Student square. >> Yeah, student square. >> So are board meetings on there? >> I check my email and I' I've never seen like notifications. >> So that would be something easy to add just to that because they do have their own portal of information. Okay, thank you. >> I made note of it. >> Okay, perfect. Yeah, thank you. Thanks. >> Okay, go ahead. >> I just have one comment in terms of revenue enhancement. Maybe it doesn't go there, but um we haven't talked about workforce housing at all um this year. And I'd really appreciate more information on that and where we are what we're looking at. I know it's very very early in the process of thinking about that, but I know that last year the board
087and I think you Mr. Canon attended um information sessions and I I think it would be really good to hear about that again and so that we don't lose sight of maybe the vision of where we're going. Um so that's just more of a comment than a question. >> Sure, we can do that. >> What she said. >> Okay. >> Student rep, did you have any Matthew? No comments. Public comment. No. Okay. Um, so on to board reports. Um, so again, thank you very much for that. Uh, let's see. I had, um, actually Logan and I had toured the Martinez adult education last Wednesday. Um, it was very nice. We met almost we went into classrooms. Not that everyone was in classrooms, but we got a tour and um, you know, got more information from
088them and I think they were happy to see us. And also wanted to recognize um there's an employee that's been there for 18 years, Judy Sabia, and she's retiring at the end of the year, but um she has seems to do a lot of stuff and um I think they'll be missed, but she's going to be retiring, so good luck to her. And then um on Thursday, um I had the privilege of attending the orchestra concert. Um and of course Sarah puts on a wonderful Stafford puts on a wonderful presentation. is the junior high and the high school and so it was packed in the um gym. So, um great job to all the musicians and um I know the band was like twice as big as the orchestra, but um it was Yeah. Yeah.
089But it was really it was wonderful event and so um if you missed it this year, definitely try to go next year and I think they do still have at least one more um concert that is um at PAB. Oh, is two? Well, one's just um like where they get evaluated, right? >> Right. >> Open house. >> Oh, okay. At open house, too. Okay. >> In the play. Okay. Yeah. So, there's still more opportunities to hear the music. Um which they do. Again, fabulous job. Um and that's pretty much it for my report. Uh I'm reporting on behalf of Martinez Education Foundation. Tonight we have our third annual readathon which will be taking place at our elementary sites March 2nd through the 6th and in our first two years we raised over $120,000. This has
090supported literacy and library positions. So as people recall those library media specialist assistants library media assistant rather have been on our potential list of cuts. We have unfortunately had to cut them each year, but MEF has been able to the last two years backfill them so that there hasn't been a disruption in services to our students. And we this year also gave out a $2,000 library grant to each of our elementary schools using the readathon money. And we also this year funded the Sunde literacy program which is used at all four of the elementary school sites. I don't remember the number. I know it was over $50,000, but I'm not going to give an exact number, but that came that was able to alleviate that money from the MUSD general fund. Um, so it freed
091up that money because uh MEF took on that amount. So, we're hoping for a very successful third event this year. So, you can support by signing your kids up, pledging for kids that you know, um becoming a sponsor. That's what I'm doing because I don't have an elementary school student anymore. um and encourage our kids to read. The instructions for families went out today and reminders will be going out um continuing until the day. And so later in March, I'm hoping to have a good progress report with a really successful event and ways that we'll continue to support literacy and library media. >> You guys have started taking off a bunch of my stuff already. So yeah, the readathon is still taking sponsors. Um, I'll be out there on the 27th, uh, volunteering and on
092the 4th of March, uh, reading aloud with some of the other trustees, I think myself, Brenda, and Tanya are all signed up. They might have some more spots. >> I would love to. I didn't I didn't know about it. So, >> contact Courtney Jensen. >> That's who I would recommend. Um they're $100 shy the Alhambor High School Drama Club from their fundraising goal. So uh anybody here before you leave, you know, it's a $100 shy. That's it. There is. But she can tell you all about it. Um and then what else? Uh February 25th at the high school the district one city council meeting. You've probably seen them. They're going around each district. Uh, district one will be done at Alhhamra at 6 PM, I believe, in the performing arts studio. >> Yeah. So, if
093you want more stuff about the what's going on in the city, I would go check that out. And on March 11th, I think right before our facilities meeting, myself and Trustee Leel um signed up for a grant uh writing seminar that's being put on by the county. Uh there's lots of spaces open. So if anyone's interested, it is not all day, but in order to get some type of certificate, you'd have to attend from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. And that's going to be at the MRC clubhouse. And you can find more information on that uh through the county or on your District 5 supervisor's uh social media. That's it. >> I hate to say mine's pretty long, too, and I don't even know where to start. So, um I do want to say that
094Mr. Pitulo is being recognized with an impact award by the city um on March 5th and I believe most of the board is going um which is fabulous. Our music program um just continues to grow. The band performances last Thursday were incredible. I think there was over 200 at the part that I attended and what was amazing to me is that all of the kids were doing exactly what they should be doing the entire time. I was just mesmerized by the entire floor filled with musicians all doing what they should be doing. Um, that in itself was impressive and the music was fabulous. Uh, the music boosters for the junior high had a fundraiser at States Coffee on Saturday. Half the sales states gave to the music boosters and somebody, was it you that said
0953,000? >> Oh, somebody told me it was like $3,000 >> which is just amazing. the generosity and um then they had um some young musicians performing um in kind of like a little area outside and they had their their cases open and people were tossing in money and it was uh it was quite fun. Um, let's see. I I do want to say that we will read and we were invited to read. Um, and if if any of the schools want us to attend stuff, I'm having trouble finding without combing through all the calendars uh events. So, if there's something that you think we would enjoy um seeing or coming to, please let us all know. Um, and uh, if other groups want us to read, if other schools want us to come by and
096read that first week in March, I know I'd love to. Anybody needs a book suggestion, I have many. Um, so I'm real happy to fit anybody with a book. Um, and I really hope that that we raise tons of money because libraries and books are so important to our kids. And then finally, uh, last week I heard from community members in the Lasutus attendance area that some families did not receive, uh, the recent enrollment mailers or received them only in English. And given the importance of reaching all the families, I'd appreciate an update um maybe at the next board meeting on enrollment at Lassunis across all grade levels as well as the outreach efforts underway to support TK and kindergarten enrollment and ensure communications are effectively reaching families in both English and Spanish. >> So,
097>> can you talk about the walkthrough and then the feed first thing? >> Oh, yeah. There's a lot there's a lot. I thought you would do that. Um yeah, so um Trusty Campbell and I uh were able to walk through Lasutes today and view the Feet First U program that's going on there. It was so impressive. Again, um the person the lead speaks both Spanish. >> Oh yes, I'm sorry. Yeah. And Dr. Patrick, sorry you were so quiet. I didn't see you over there. Um yeah, we were all three there and it was really really impressive because uh it was kind of martial arts but um the the lead man speaks Spanish and um English and the the group of kids had a ton of girls which I was very very impressed with because sometimes
098we tend to forget the girls in these um kinds of activities. All the kids were engaged. Um they were having a great time. I recognized some of the equipment they were using. I'm like I have that. So, um, very exciting to see that program and to see our kids engaged in something very positive. >> And the one thing I want to recognize is like again is feet first because none of these kids have had to pay for this out of pocket. All of it's been covered. I think what was it? How many kids? I miscounted. You got it right. >> There were I know because I'm a teacher. I was like >> 25. There was 20. >> I think it was 27 because there was two in the middle. But had they all been going
099around then I would have said 27. But yeah, there were 27 kids. I didn't even have to count. >> But then Logan verified there were 27 kids. >> Yeah. >> Right. >> So, thank you to Feed First for doing that for our students. >> Yeah. There's It's been a busy couple of weeks. Um last week we had our DEI committee meeting and we talked about um where we were with the um spending of the grant, which is almost complete, and that's been a really nice um thing to work with. And we also talked about what the different schools were doing for Black History Month. and a lot was going on including the concert that was mentioned um for this weekend. So hopefully folks can attend that. Um and I also attended the orchestra concert which
100was lovely. So I'm I'm looking forward to the next one. And I also got to um I volunteered to judge one of the mock trial competitions at the courthouse last week. Um I did not get to judge Alhamra, but I don't know what school I judge. They don't tell us what schools they are, but um the students are always really impressive. They basically put on an entire trial and this year it was a um a murder trial and um they have witnesses. They have and they're playing all the parts, the attorneys, the witnesses, the expert witnesses. um they object to evidence. The judge makes them explain their objections, which I was really impressed with because I know some attorneys that can't really do that very well. Um but the students did it very well and
101then the judge rules on it and uh and we have to score. So, it's really fun. Um and I heard Alhamra made it to the quarterfinals, which is really great. And um not to put Matthew on the spot, but he also told me that he won a couple of awards. So, congratulations If if I could just add to that uh trustee, it's going to be in my parent square message, but we also had in Alhambor student one first place for courtroom artist Kim Lee. So, we are going to um it's in my parent square message that's going out um probably Wednesday morning because I want to add a few things to it. But yeah, we're really excited about it. I'm I want to make sure that I'm I can come and watch next time I
102because I love it. So very very happy for our students that participated and I think that Alhamra is going to have be some real serious competition to Alkalanis and some of those other uh school districts. So we'll just keep getting ready and get better and better and Matthew will come back and say, "Wow, look at how my my cloud ride." So yeah, I just wanted to share that. That was really good news. >> Thank you. >> Okay. And we don't need additional comments from the public and we don't need to go back to close session. Any future board agenda items? >> Yes. So, thank you, Brenda, for bringing up the workforce housing. I have actually been meaning to do that for a while, so I figured we'd make it official and request for that to
103be on a future agenda. Where we left things, we had our now retired superintendent, Helen Rossi, uh Mr. Cannon, myself and Michael Cass from the city of Martinez were our ad hoc committee. Then we attended the workforce housing workshop series that was put on by CSBA. That concluded and that ended our ad hoc committee. But I think that we do need to be engaging with this work. There was so much that we did and so much that we learned and then I would think Mr. Canon probably agrees we have more and more and more questions at the end of it that we still need to so it needs to be an ongoing conversation and so I don't know how um I trust that President Buger and Dr. Patrick will be able to decide the best
104way to agendaize it but it might be worth having a discussion of reopening reestablishing a committee to be able to have these ongoing um ongoing work around this. So I would like to see that when possible. Okay. Anybody else? >> Yeah. Uh I have one. Um I'm sure the district does it and I know at the county level uh we had one of our teachers that's here that's being recognized, but um I'd like to see some semblance of uh whether on a monthly or quarterly basis that we could recognize staff as a board, not just retirees. uh you know, it's an opportunity for them to see that we appreciate all that they do, but also for us to be able to meet uh the different staff within the district. >> Thank you. >> Okay. >>
105Sorry, I have one more thing because you just triggered something that we did not say in our personnel in our consent calendar. We have two teachers retiring. So, congratulations and thank you for their service. and one Charelle was my PE teacher in sixth grade and I worked alongside her for seven years and so I wish her all the best and um and thank you for your many many years of dedicated service to our kiddos. >> I have to piggyback on that too because she was my daughter's uh PE teacher and gave her a love of running. She runs marathons now, half marathons, excuse me. And uh that's all Char. So, if you're listening, Char, thank you for everything you've done for our kids and uh welcome to retirement. Okay, with that, uh, we are adjourning
106the meeting at 8:09 M.
