035are going to move on with uh our continued rewards and presentations at 14.1 which is student services update um that is [Music] so today we're going to continue the conversation related to um positive behavior inventions and supports and discipline um at the last meeting in april we briefly reviewed the pbis discipline matrix and also our secondary school data and tonight we're going to be looking at our elementary school data so first starting with las vegas again this is a multi-year snapshot of suspensions on the number of students suspended over the course of the school year so it's a four-year picture and as you can see um we have had some suspensions this year total number of five students have been suspended um with a total of um eight suspensions and um that's a little bit

036less than the 18 19 school year which is probably um as we talked about last time due to covid and the most um reflective of a true a true school year um due to the co-impact we covered over the 1920s 2021 school years and then the next school um is morello park and um you can see their suspensions have been down this year although there have been a couple suspensions of two students have been suspended for a total number of five uh suspensions and then the next school is john muir um and um you can see that suspensions have been up at junior this year um with a total number of 10 suspension 10 students suspended and uh for a total of 14 suspensions and so um i would break down the data that way

037just so you can see that we often sometimes see students um the same students having had more than one suspension so if i just reported total number of suspensions i think it's also important to see like how many issues we're actually talking about and then finally the last school john sweat um has not had suspensions this year um and which is reflective of a typical year for china and then um i shared this um diagram um at the last meeting that just to reflect on as we're talking about um doesn't find dna that's only a piece of um what happens at a school site and we also look at this data in context of what's happening academically for a student as well as in terms of social emotional learning and in total what supports and

038interventions are needed to address the whole child's needs and so um one of the things that we looked at in terms of multi-year planning at our sites especially in light of cobit and the impact of code on learning loss as well as mental health needs it is what additional supports are needed at our sites and if you go to the next client um we look we look specifically at how counseling support mental health support has been allocated at our sites and for the school year with the influx of additional common money and it's temporary in nature however we knew that our sites have increased needs so we did increase counseling in all of our sites in terms of the allocation um and prior years our elementary schools typically had two days um two or three

039days of district provided counseling support and that has been increased so that all of our elementary schools have at least three days a week of counseling support however laws can just use chose to use their own money to increase their counseling services to a full five days a week of support and then our junior high has five days a week of general education counseling plus um they also have tier three male health support which is an additional five days a week to support our students with special education needs who receive counseling services to their ieps and then alhambra also has five days a week um um and the center is specifically um and then lastly just to um reflect this that type is pretty small i'm sorry about that but just to kind of show

040a brief snapshot oops um of the roadmap in terms of where we are with social emotional learning and pbis we began this journey several years ago and it certainly had some bumps in the road due to covet and school closures and it's kind of created some stops and restarts along the way but um back in the 2018-19 school year we um our doc piloted the shoes love social emotional learning curriculum and at some of our elementary schools and it was adopted at both las quintas and john sweat elementary um the sites there the staff unanimously unionistically chose to implement that curriculum that year as part of the pilot and then um the following school year we had pbis teams at all of our secondary sites in the 1920s school year and of course the covent

041closure is happening in the spring of that year that certainly impacted the work that those teams were doing and we've had to kind of adjust and reform teams and restart since then and then the following school year um choose lab and character counts um social emotional learning curriculum was adopted at all of our elementary schools um and then at the start of this school year um he kind of kicked off the year with her will focus on social emotional learning and knowing especially that what our staff and our students were coming out of from being in distance learning victoria kobe so we did a one and a half days of professional development for our staff we needed to choose a lot of as well as some experiential learning related to trauma-informed practices for all of

042our staff and august with the school year and as i mentioned before we increased counseling support to three days a week at all of our elementary sites and um this year our junior high team launched pbis and um we are working to relaunch pbis at alcanbar and vicente um as i mentioned before those teens were ready to go before covet and are needing to restart there so that's just uh some of the highlights of where we are along the journey for social emotional learning and supporting our students um needs any questions more questions thank you general good information um quick question on the tier two tier three mental health support what can you describe what that entails with five days a week what i mean three days a week is it a one-on-one session time

043is it what does that do it can be and so tier two reflects um i didn't include it this time if you remember from last time the triangle with tier one being universal supports and tier two is what we call targeted support which is the additional services that some of our students need or supports some of our students need in order to access and um do well in school whether it's behaviorally emotionally or academically and so our counseling services fall into that two or two and two to three um support depending on the level of the testing is so our counselors at our elementary schools and our secondary sites are doing individual counseling they're doing group at the elementary they do a lot of push-in service and to hold for whole class um i know

044at morrell park for example and some of our other elementary schools they have a focus on mindfulness and so there's a they do a push-in um session for a whole class related to mindfulness they also do some targeted sessions for students that might be based on specific needs like whether it's social skills or anger management or group grief and loss those kinds of things so it really depends on what the need of the site is and the counselors work very closely with the site administration and the school staff to make sure that the services they're providing online with the needs of the students there is that the teachers that are requesting that are scheduling that for the individual students or is that so referrals can come from just any of the staff members um the

045administration and as well parents and we have a referral process that all of our counselors use at all of the sites one other question about the um the discipline data the number of occurrences i'm assuming this is all tracked by type of occurrence as well correct yes additional breakdown that you provided on that what type of what students are being suspended for yes um yes i have that information that i can provide a lot of time or i just so am i reading your last quest correctly that the these um three days per week is going to continue at least through 2023 is that correct correct so when we did when we adopted choose love is that specifically for an elementary based program or is that something it's actually tk12 okay we started in elementary

046um but since then um our secondary sites have looked at it as well but it is designed to go tk through 12. and how is it different or the same as pbis that you've been talking about so and i'll have one more question and then does it interlock with um web so pdis is not a program um or a type of intervention it is um pbis stands for positive behavior interventions [Music] interventions supports and services that schools put in place for just to address student needs choose love and falls under that because it is a social emotional learning curriculum and part of pbis is teaching students and providing instruction and support to students in areas of need so for our students who might have social skills deficits for example um or have needs related to

047friendship or bullying um or you know anger management those kinds of things let's choose love is designed to be actually a tier one support it's a whole class in uh support where a teacher is delivering lessons to the whole class related to a specific topic that's um within the best of the shoot club curriculum and are we looking into adopting that at the secondary um and then obviously are we are we continuing to roll out of it i i i'm just wondering because i i actually really appreciate this up and down because i know that that we got started and stopped and started and stopped and it and priorities have changed as well along the [Music] no and i'm just wondering are we because i don't want to completely unravel every all this work that

048we've done over the years but is it number one does this choose love still fit for our elementary and if so um does it fit in our secondary because certainly those kids who were really getting a lot of those programs in second and third are actually pretty close so it makes some sense to streamline that and then is there is there a limit on the program as far as time and curriculum and other resources so one of the things that we were really looking at in choose love is that it is a tk through 12 programs that provides that continuity across grade levels and elementary secondary so students are hearing the same type of language and um across sites regardless of whether they're coming from morello or john muir all of our kids feed into

049the same secondary program so there's real value in having that consistency that's part of that pdis model is that um our expectations are really clear for students and um if students from morello are hearing one thing and students from los angeles are hearing something different then the junior high team has to do complete kind of reteaching so back to kind of the starts and stops um choose love um the secondary teams did look at choose love and um we had actually youth who was on the board she's left kane and spoke to the staff and kind of introduced the curriculum and the staff were very interested in it that as i shared previously um they said alcanbra the pbs team needs to reform after kobe kind of staff have changed obviously you've had a change

050in leadership as well and so alhambra specifically needs to re-restart that and we're going to do a re-introduction of choose love at the junior high the team has been working all school year in looking at their supports for students and they are doing pbis lessons for um for their students but um it's not directly issues a lot of curriculum and it's my understanding at this point in time so again we're going to be looking at that again so part of it is doing that relaunch for secondary making sure we're all on the same page and of course we need to make sure that staff um this is something that stop girl in agreement that this is what they're going to do because it is a part of that multi-tiered systems of support that we have

051in place for our students is ensuring that we have that um social emotional learning um addressed within the school day thank you that that definitely helps i i think i i would ask that if if there are changes and decisions that that are being made going in different directions that you keep the board just kind of advised i think it was a little it was difficult when we had two schools doing one the character counts and then she's going to choose love and um and then funneling into the junior higher wouldn't like be nice to have some consistency so if there are concerns of the secondary about the program maybe we need to look at it also at the elementary and i'll just speak to another character accounts piece but um really genre is the

052only site that is still using formally using the character counts program but they're also using chief love and supreme part because that staff really invested quite a lot in training and bringing in the character counts program into their staff and into their school and when they look to choose love though they really thought that there was value in that program too but they didn't want to just put aside all the work that they've done with character counts but it really did have made a significant difference in their community so um they are they are moving forward with both any more questions general two other questions um with regard to the support of the counseling support and mental health is this um by the counselors that we have the district staff or is this consultants too

053or is it a combination of both it's actually a combination of both right now um it's majority district staff but we had some staffing changes mid-year and so and when we increased um support at our secondary level we weren't able to uh hire in this position so we've brought in a couple contractors to make sure that our services are being provided and one of the concerns of the high school is being we were down on counselors anywhere two counselors correct i think you're referring to academic counselors these numbers only reflect the mental health counseling so it's one mental health counselor at the high school with five days a week it's five days a week but it's a mixture of staff it's not just one person okay and then the other question um the metrics that

054we have i guess to measure this to to see how it's doing or the performance seems like it's it's predominantly dependent on suspensions and expulsions is that correct we look at a variety of what's one piece but we also look at attendance data um even student performance data there's a variety of things it's not just as a one are there any these tools to do like positive reinforcement like you know bonus bucks or you know so partisan yeah so part of the pdis model is looking at um how do we do a pre pre-survey as well as a midpoint and kind of post survey as well what supports are already in place so you identify the needs of the site in terms of looking at how um have expectations already been identified for example does

055the school display the rules is it clear to students what the expectations are are those kinds of things in place so that when pdis teams are working on um putting supports in place they know what those priorities are so there's a formal checklist that students are using to kind of drive their work to ensure that it's a comprehensive model that they're putting in place and addressing um all of the needs that need to be a part of the pdis and the positive interventions but as far as and they do they do have tangible rewards that the kids can do um throughout for uh exhibiting the behaviors that they're supposed to sorry thank you [Music] all right well thank you so much for bringing this report back to us um we will look forward to hearing

056progress in probably all these areas relatively uh smaller all right our next uh agenda item number is 14.2 which is the superintendent's report this is presented by and just uh just a couple of things this week um many of you might have seen on the website that are in the newsletter that our covert testing has been decreased our lab called and we weren't getting the traffic that we used to get so we are continuing we must continue to offer it we're happy to continue to offer it at alhambra high school only mondays wednesdays and thursdays the same hours as always posted on our district website um there is the federal government did come through and say that they're no longer going to pay for uninsured tests people who are uninsured um didn't have to worry

057about having insurance that the federal government had grants to cover the cost but our lab lsa labs they can't honor they will honor any uninsured testers who have been previously tested by at one of our sites before march 22nd so if anyone was tested and didn't have insurance they're gonna pay for them and honor them anyway so um i wanted to let everyone know that as well as citizens oversight committee for both um measure q and measure r and k that measure r and k of the bonds measure q's our parcel tax we are in desperate need of community members to sit on those panels if you know anyone who is interested the commitment is about an hour or less twice a year once in october once in april and on both you take a

058look at so for instance the parcel tax we passed a parcel tax um three years ago measure q and we are supposed to be spending that money specifically on counselors um art um music those types of things and so this oversight community looks at the budget that we've spent the money we've spent and the money that we're predicting to spend in our next us budget to make sure that everything aligns with the words and the language in the parcel text and the bond let's see reminder uh september 24th is our mdf run i know it's far away but it's going to sneak up fast saturday september 24th keep the date open you don't have to run you can walk and if you don't want to do either you can stand on a corner and hand

059out water so volunteers are are always accepted okay um i think that's that's it [Music] our next item is public comments under government code section 54954.3 members of the public have the right to address the board on any matter within the forced jurisdiction however the board may not take action on any non-agenda item individual speakers will allow three minutes to address the board with 20 minutes total for this portion of the agenda additional time is allowed to be at the end of our meeting uh if we need additional time uh we do have one person who is pulling apart for public comment that's linda polkara good evening uh the reason i filled out for public health because i wasn't quite sure linda olivera martinez california um i wasn't quite sure where to ask the question

060about a program that i understand that's being implemented for the folks that have not passed the a through g program and i understand it was in the amount of 144 000 that it was going to be a six week program and i wanted to know more about it and i know you can't answer questions but maybe during the meeting and i even submitted a public um comment card under um 17 um let's see that had to do with the eloc programs because i'm thinking well maybe that program is under the e-lock and maybe we'll hear about it when you come to that uh 17.7 so if it's not included in 17.7 then i'd like to know more about that program for instance when it's going to start and when it's going to end and how

061it's going to be measured as far as progress and success and um also the ethnic breakdown of the students that are going to be in that a special six-week program so um i mean if you saw the statistics that came out on the amg uh it's dismal for um english learners that only 22 of them passed um and socially a disadvantaged only 33 percent passed um no african americans out there were 14 that were in that program none of them has so we've got some some real problems here and if you've got this special program her 44 000 program that's going to help them i want to make sure that there's an effort to bring in the categories of students that scored so low thank you oh one more thing i'm not sure um i'm

062working with the city of martinez for a sequel to mile this coming sunday at the farmers market and i just wanted to invite all of you and see if there's a way that the school district could also advertise it for all the parents and the students um and invite you and everyone administration students parents to the event uh from eleven to one o'clock and i understand there's bocce tournament going on so we've got competition with the italians [Music] meeting uh 16 is our consent calendar are there any changes in consent calendar any more questions or comments on the consent calendar i have a comment regarding the construction inspection services for john sweat um it seems like this uh business entity is headquartered out of washington state and i would like to put it up for

063consideration of preferential hiring or local businesses included in our solicitations for future discussion [Music] i'm going to ask john to come and comment for us our instructor uh as most people have multiple residences he actually this business is listed out of washington yeah yeah that's where he was he was was here he went to washington he's just keeping everything that it was for violent purposes that's the problem okay do we so do we do you have a question do you want to pull this one off the consent calendar yeah okay uh any other more questions any public comments saying none will bring you back to the board for action i have to approve the insight calendar second uh all in favor any post obsessions so carrie uh 17.1 is moving into items for board consideration

064or action uh 17.4 is a measure our renault park project this is an action item presented by helen rossi with the assistance of john clark yeah there's three slides they're connected right here if you just click [Music] shouldn't you be able to blow it up here scroll down as we continue to prepare the design build region documents in the myrtle park and i'll be good to do an update uh what's transpired over the last few years since it was in together as a group um when mayor r uh came into uh implementation uh we came up [Music] kitchen facility and then relocating the administration so we can create during the process since we've been doing this for quite a while it was a master plan update uh basically two years ago and during that process

065additional items were identified that were beyond current budgets which was improving the circulation drop-off area and trying to uh remove woodridge from the back of the canvas so the concept was developed to move wood bridge over closer to the plate build area and create additional parking by by moving the parking out of the circulation area it created a bigger queuing area something more parts that are stacked waiting to do pick up and then also with multiple lanes uh the right lane can actually pull through and go into the new parking lot through our queueing through the left area so uh as we are preparing to go out for the design build rp uh probably early june um we were intending to have a concept included that would uh add the drop off three things in

066additional parking lot area so we can get pricing on that to bring back uh to the board to see if we can somehow include that in the project depending on the financing uh you know i think you're really aware of the last year the escalation has been pretty tremendous so we're really uh holding on to see what the costs have happened uh over the last year in the regard but we've reached the rp in uh in june we'll probably be back to the board late august those national numbers that will be looking for approval to issue that agreement and the goal is to start basically a little right here from now the school's out trying to do the front of the school area get set up for new construction um build new facilities during the

067school year and come back the following summer and modernize the existing classrooms so um can you explain john if we decide not to do any um extra parking does that drop off pickup area have to be worked on anyway yeah so if you look at the second slide which is the original budget uh in order to get the kindergarten and the admin building in front of the campus we have to pull out the curb lane uh out for them what it is now so you have to do a big new configuration that doesn't necessarily affect i mean improve the drop-off in circulation it's more just the available space that we need for the buildings the concept that came up during the match planning a couple years ago really does a major uh drop off basically

068the three curve three lanes and drop off the pickup like you see the schools that we've been doing from the los angeles uh john where you can see the three lanes and it's also coming in at john sweat so you've got a drop off plane kind of lane for the compute and out of the drop-off thing and then you get a password even though you know it's always going to be congested it does help a lot with the base project it's really just pushing the curve out of reconfiguring it um there's also concerns that uh since we started this project you know ce has made a lot of changes so when you look at that slide and you have department installs it back up in the drop-off area if we were starting a school right

069now they would allow us you know design process and you look at the the option a that came up that is basically compliant with today's standard of not having the heartbeat areas that act up into a drop off we want to set a complete separation so again you know we were looking forward to including this uh just to get pricing um because really this is the ultimate improvement to that site that does help with the uh the drop off circulation and queuing it does facilitate the ability to uh get woodbridge in a place that's more conducive to having them not on our proper campus and then creating the space for additional classrooms whether it's new buildings or uh you know we're in discussions with bridgepot possibly you know using their facilities and modernizing that since

070they're already set there and they were set at the same time as the british schools so they're the same vintage thing and when we talked about those john and i and we talked about the woodbridge portables if we renovate them through this time into two classrooms when we go to do in 20 years or so when the canvas needs to be replaced anything would be replaced including those because they wouldn't be two new ones that stuck on that sore thumb so it just keep everything in mind um the other thing that i wanted to mention while we were talking about this project was the city of martinez we have a lot of this agreement with the city of martinez currently i spent at the same time today um getting them noticed a 12-month notice that

071we need to revise that need to end it and then do our construction and then put it back in place so that the community members have access to the park as it is and what the city of martinez has on morelo clark's site in our land used agreement his use of the field um the snack shack with the restrooms attached to the shining star free sport so um [Music] so what we're looking for today is permission from the board to um when we go out for our rfp our permission to include the new parking um for pricing and foreign as part of the project our additional our original cost is 650 000. we do have that money in 135 for facilities um should the board want to go in that direction if it ends up

072being more we have to of course take a look at the whole project depending on this village and just to interject you know when you look at the program so far i would say that you're very ecstatic about where we are we've got basically three brand new schools being built finishing our second and starting martha and the combination of all three of those is within the budget and the status of those you know i think that you've got to do it i do think that is [Music] parking because it was a couple of the issues that kept kind of circulating was how close we're moving everything to the front curb line um and i think if we can get the bulk of the cars off it does not only does it doesn't help people on

073morela with it and the queue up in the neighborhood um but that does that does alleviate several of the site problems that we've continued to experience there including um after school parking in the fire zone so we'd have an actual parking lot which i think would be would be great so this the 650 is is the configuration of the parking lot that's a lot of money but it actually sounds like a pretty good deal considering some of the price tags on our on our other yeah the 650 was really the addition of the parking lot itself i mean we had money to do the curb line rework so now it's just you know what direction goes so it's kind of the original scope takes care of most of the stuff on the parking lot drop-off

074area it's the additional parking that's added because we're basically shipping here you know even at the bottom side uh you know there's a lot of work that has to happen through there the whole piece of meeting gets removed it kind of looks the same as it does now but it's completely different so there's not a lot of impact with what it is now on our neighbors that are kind of posted up that slide uh no not on the ones that are uh uh there's really if we don't have any neighbors uh on the close of the fence line up to the south that's pretty much the same are we going to have a line of sight issue though working are we going to keep is there going to be a line of sight issue of

075putting further parking in the very back of that area it's hard to see in that van right now but there is uh two obviously considered on the second plan um there is an ability to put a pipeline uh right where this drop-off circulation goes before you go to the parking lot dash line and then there was another consideration of possibly getting it up here the only concern that we have with getting it there is if somebody was to come in with a big vehicle and you know trucking down my mistake um how they would turn around and get out it would be kind of like man so it's great for closing it off um you know keep people out but there might be some issues if somebody came in there by mistake or i couldn't

076get you running it out um somehow trying to back up that link because it's a big number of truck cars i i just i know part of the issue with that campus is having a singular point of entry and it's still this still kind of has three points of entry for the front of the school and so it doesn't were you having for the students yeah so we i mean yeah i don't know okay so when the uh the addition of the kindergarten is put right here and that's why the admin was added right here so this is really the single point of entry so this is where basically everything's becoming going we still have the exiting so for for exiting people can still come out um you know through these exits or come out

077back [Music] [Laughter] and this administration basically follows [Music] hours you know when school starts you have to physically go into the admin area to get into the campus so this is truly the same concept and the other drop off the current drop off is 80 off right don't we have gates around where the new kitchen is uh so this is basically this is the drop off for right right there yes you've come all the way here to drop off [Music] does this so this this makes it better because the drop off basically starts here comes all the way around and like you said you always want the entry to be at the end of the drop-off so of course there but to the end to the parking lot and then with the kitchen going in

078right here so the food service delivers would actually be coming in right here so it'll be like a little like a little access drop-off area so that any food service can come in here okay great thanks any more questions john i don't know if this is something that you would be able to answer but and i i had a child at that school over six years so i totally am on board with the new drop off lane and parking lot um but my only concern is it looks to me like the kids that are going to whitmer chapter school are gonna have to cross the parking lot what are we gonna do to make sure that that's not a safety problem come on from here yeah yeah so this would be like the sidewalk crosswalk

079would [Music] same thing and drop them off before the school started and then pick them up in a day so even usually there's a back and forth time frame with this with the new plan would this then be mean that when all four schools are done they would all have the lanes without parking backing up right okay i think that makes sense to have all of them eat even though we don't have to in this case but to be with the newest compliance that makes a lot of sense to me one question on the great walkway to the to the drop off one of these i've witnessed and experienced with the new uh drop off at john muir is it's majority of it is a narrow sidewalk and so people have a tendency to wait

080to get a large landing to open doors and people can pass is there an opportunity to expand this sidewalk for that issue so they're getting full utilization if it's not already being done concerning some people what the sidewalk is doing [Music] and then the other question i have is regarding the island um it doesn't what's the path of travel for we're creating the island with no clear ada connection to the school facility so what's the plan there yeah i think most of the ada will be brought into over here with this piece here or beyond here get on the sidewalk [Music] you might be able to put a crosswalk somewhere across here you might give you the stalls in that crosswalk it's just sometimes when you have the crosswalk and drop off then you get

081that conflict going on with you right across it's not uncommon but that's one again we're just doing the concept now so once we get somebody on board with design builder they'll have to take that to the next level and actually take the state and get it approved so a lot of that stuff because when it comes and understood and but obviously with the budget numbers um paying attention to it now is there what are the lighting considerations for the new parking lot uh so this parking lot has the existing uh lighting was retrofitted with led um three or four years ago but i think a lot of times you move because then obviously this will be really posted as new and that's all including the success um other more questions i don't have any questions

082but i i do think we should include this in our class all right um so let's bring it back this is an action item um [Music] i'm going to approve the plan with the updates to the parking second [Music] post extensions it's so simple thank you you know it is eight o'clock uh and we do have an interpreter here that we usually give a five-minute break to so if it's okay with everyone let's take a five minute break and stretch and we'll be back [Music] okay we are at uh 17.2 which is the review of resolution 2022-19 uh recognition of lgbtq pride month and this is an action item and just presented by at our last board meeting i brought um forward a resolution the same resolution um on resolution 22. i can't go home

0832022-19 for lgbtq plus pride month and i was asked to make some revisions and bring it back again for discussion and i added um four um revisions and if you separate them by whereases then it's numbers the seventh and the eighth so whereas the lack of awareness and understanding of issues facing lgbtq plus children and youth has contributed to higher rates of school dropout academic failure and school disengagement and number nine whereas lgbtq plus children of youth who experience discrimination harassment ability have a risk three to thirteen times higher for a diagnosis of depression anxiety suicide suicidality and other mental illnesses other than their heterosexual cisgender peers and then number 10 whereas the pride the progress pride flag serves as a comprehensive symbol of lgbtq plus pride and the lgbtq plus civil rights movement and

084they last whereas whereas flying the flag and flying the pro progress pride flag throughout the month of june further symbolizes the district's celebration of diversity and support for the lgbtq plus community so tonight i present the revised resolution for discussion and possible action all right uh any more questions discussion yeah yeah so um first i'm really excited to see this back and with the revision so thank you very much for that um i i also want to say i'm really i've been pleased to hear from so many community members and so much support um from our students from our parents from [Music] um all kinds of groups really in support of this i think that's really great to see i was thinking specifically of sarah stafford's comment and talking about how there wasn't currently a

085gsa i won't tell you how long ago but i was a member of the original gsa at alhambra high school and that was in the days before the performing arts building it was in the drama room those who are familiar with the campus that drama room was under a staircase in the furthest reaches of the campus and it's really really cool to be on this floor talking about this instead of in a room literally under the stairs so um it's i just see how how far we've come and i think this is really really a good step for progress and something you know this resolution is something that probably should have happened years ago so we're here now and that's great i did also last time make some comments about um the policy regarding flying

086the flag we do have existing policy and we've had a chance the board members had a chance to review that policy it does not preclude us from flying an additional flag i do still feel like it's really important to make sure that we have language in that policy if we do move forward with that to ensure that we are um i guess only flying flags that are within what our district goals are our l capitals that are reflective of our student body and so i think i'm probably not the right person to craft that language but i think there are some examples locally of districts and other entities who've made those policy revisions and i think we can follow their lead and i think that would make a lot of sense i think it always

087makes sense to look at our policy and make sure that we have our rails in place um but i am really excited for this and i um i want to fly the flag i want to do it with those policy changes if possible so for me i see a couple ways we could proceed on this we could and maybe there's others and we can hear that too we could pass a resolution tonight with the flag provisionally knowing that we're going to get policy updated we know we also have a timeline we're at the end of april we want to get this done obviously by june 1st before that really so that staff has time to actually get a flag and be ready um or we could i suppose pass the resolution separately and then bring

088the flag portion back to our next meeting and vote on that separately i think that would maybe also be an option so i'd love to hear other members thoughts on how we could proceed on those okay recording yeah sometimes i forget to turn on my microphone um yeah i completely agree with you i i'd love to see us pass this tonight um because i know we have some people in the audience that would love to see that also but um i don't have a problem with you know obviously i don't have a problem with updating our flag policy um and i was thinking the same thing that you know i know the college board did something similar a couple of years ago where they updated their flag policy and they had some criteria that you

089know included that it must be a nationally recognized flag um it can't be you know for another country a political party a campaign a religious organization and i thought we could also include something about um there must be a relation to our distribution statement or an lcap goal which um this prime flag is completely related to our lcap goals of uh you know diversity equity inclusion and students being safe at school um so i agree with you that it's overdue and i hope we can get it done if not tonight then very soon thank you i think before we agree on the whereas with flying the flag i think we need a informational agenda item to discuss what the current board policies are and then any proposed changes to those report policies i don't want

090to put the carpet for the horse i think it's a good discussion but i think we should have the flag discussion before we pass through no well not before it passed a resolution before we included the resolution the fight piece that's why i think we need to have that conversation with the board um so that we know what our parameters are for any future quest for client practice i agree with jeremy it seems like it is the cart from the horse i do understand um obviously the district is is here to provide the safe and support of the culture as we've identified in our mission statement um i do believe that they find the flag um i i don't i don't uh i have trouble saying that it represents the entire community we represent we

091fly the united states flag as it represents all of us as americans we fly the california flag as it represents all of us as californians and i don't know that the entire community is in support um i support any practice trainings community groups organizations that demonstrate effectiveness to help improve our social uh understanding and acceptance and betterment of the community and then teach our children to be respectful and accepting of one another um but i don't think uh demonstrating the price flag at this time is equitable for the representative support of the entire community um well [Music] here here's where i'm coming from because i i want to be sensitive to the time of both of our staff and where things are at and i don't even know if this is possible because when we

092make a resolution i think it's something that we need to stand behind and i take it seriously which is why i'm not a huge fan of just doing resolutions for resolution sake so i think i i want to caution that um but what i don't want to do is i don't want to hold up something that if we have support for the board and obviously we're not to the point where we're taking action um taking out bits and pieces of things until we can you know talk about it later if we we've already kind of got a consensus here um but i just think i'm in favor of just moving this forward and if we want to do it conditionally if there's some issue where we're unable to um reconcile the policy on flags and

093that's something that we could be precluding ourselves to do but i think part of this is also um stating the intent um i felt comfortable with giving the community an opportunity to reach out and be heard on this issue which is why it was set for information which is why we brought it back for discussion tonight so that's that's where i'm at um is moving forward and then looking at reconciling and i think that's pretty consistent to what we just did with the field using the football thing which is you know we we knew that there was a time constraint and we made some considerations and you know we try to stay within our policy as much as possible but i also don't want to have to have all these agenda items um for relatively

094um you know having having a lot of staff time uh taking a look at bringing things back multiple times so that we can change a little piece of policy so that's where i'm at um is there if you guys want to have other questions or we can address otherwise i'll open it up probably can i just can i just clarify so what you're suggesting is move forward with the whole thing instruct staff to look at the policy make sure it's congruent with what we're doing here if we need to make any revisions we do that in time for this after yeah we have two main things before the first june yeah so i'm good with it like i agree with you i think it doesn't make sense to necessarily pull this out do it again

095i like it i think it's making a really nice clear statement here but i do i obviously i want the policy i just want to make sure that we are you know doing it in the correct way and i agree i think it's exactly like the field usage policy we wanted to make sure we wanted to hit the timeline and we also want to make sure our policy was in line and that we were hearing from you know citizens would be to take action on the resolution as proposed tonight right and then figure out the what are the languages for the core policy and the next two weeks that's okay um we have i have eight comment cards and um i think there's a few other there's three other common cards uh so what i

096will do is i'll read them off um we have three minutes for each common uh comment but of course if um the speaker ahead of you has a similar comment what you you have you're free to come up introduce yourself and say just what he or she said or um you know thank you for hearing me you don't have to you don't have to feel obligated to use the full three minutes but you're willing to do so uh so let me read off the first three speakers we have um i think it's it's quinn webb i'm not sure um uh followed by christina griffon followed by robin uh well then i can't read your handwriting so okay all right so those are our first three um hi i'm quinn i use ebay pronouns and i'm

097an openly queer student at alexander high school i've been out since around 2018 to 2019 and i want to talk about my experiences in the district where this is so important with the representation um since or since junior high around seventh grade um to now i've encountered multiple teachers that neglected to use my preferred name and um walking calls of alhambra my friends and i have experienced flowing or appearing queer and called multiple homophobic and transphobic slurs by people we don't know and people we know um transphobic jokes from classmates i've barely talked to um and a lack of support throughout all of that even when recorded it doesn't get taken care of the way that it needs to um this year i had to drop pe because my teacher would not stop splitting the

098class with boys and girls and i would not be comfortable with the girls and i would not be safe with boys um and i had to drop pe this year because of that because i would participate and if i didn't participate i would fail um this means for me that i have to use my junior year half of my junior year to make up those points for something that i'm not in control of for something that affected me and hurt me personally i have to make up for it um i don't have i i have one safe place to use the restroom um it is in the vice principal's office there is only one gender neutral bathroom um and you need to get permission or cats to use it and i know for a fact

099i'm not the only chef person at this school so it's not fair that we only have one restroom um i uh don't have a safe place to change for pe if i hadn't been dropped i unless it's in the vice principal's office which leads to invasive questions for peers that i'm just not comfortable answering um i am in support of the resolution to recognize pride month and i would like to see the district do more to protect the safety of kids like me and provide a more welcoming environment for all students [Applause] [Music] hello lord thank you for hearing from me today um over the last two to three years since both of my children have come out we've gradually cut out certain people and places from our lives we protect them from people in

100places where they would be exposed to unnecessary judgment every negative comment or ignorant question is like a small papercut just a little sting at once but when experienced in the same spot over and over it turns into some painfully large laceration however we cannot cut out school in nusd schools my kid who's out i have one who's more out from the other um has been marked at they've been shoulder checked and the esler has been directed at them and their friends but when we drive around town and we see a pride or a love winds flag it's always pointed out to each other in the car and brings a smile to our face they say oh they're cool but what my kids are really saying is those people are safe pride month was born out

101of protest in the fight for human rights and i'd like to say that 50 years later our society has done a good job of creating equity for lgbtqi8 plus people but a survey done by the university of connecticut and human rights campaign foundation in 2017 found that among more than 12 000 respondents teams who are ranging in age from 13 to 17 and from all 50 states in washington dc it found that these teenagers are not only experiencing heartbreaking levels of stress anxiety and rejection but also overwhelmingly feel unsafe in their own school classrooms lgbtq plus young people who participated in the survey also made it crystal clear that supportive families and inclusive schools are key to their success in well-being at our house we fly the progress firefly the congress high flag is special

102in that it reminds us that even within our own lgbtqia communities there are people of color and gender diverse populations who have additional challenges and who we need to pay special attention to in order to promote equity for our diverse populations even within the lgbtqia community voting yesterday is a small show of support for these kids teachers and parents in the queer community voting no is a place of blatant disregard for who they are and you're saying to these families we don't care enough about your inclusion or even your safety not enough to do what's right to field some questions standing up for others isn't always easy it may not be popular without controversy but telling our lgbtqia families and supporting you we are an inclusive and safe pace for you isn't as controversial or

103as difficult as i think some of you might think it might be in fact it's only a start it's the very least [Applause] [Music] good evening board members and staff my name is robin cruceless i achieve her relative pronouns i'm the board president of rainbow community center of conscious class county for rainbow our mission is to build equity community and well-being among our lgbtq plus community and our allies rainbow is happy to donate a pride lot for you to raise if you'd like we've offended this offer to other cities and school districts across county nineteen cities across the coastal house county embrace the pride flood many school districts including pittsburgh unified antioch unified mount diablo unified and hopefully martinez you would fight after tonight we'll be finding the pride of life [Music] why is the

104prime flag important to fly that's a question we get quite often and there's really kind of two reasons affirmation and hope at the last meeting i heard a parent talk about their young student in the schools who was scared to use the bathroom because there was a transgender student using that and it made me sad but i wasn't surprised because if you follow any of the media social media tv anything the rhetoric involved is so harmful and so toxic towards the lgbtq community and there's nothing good is ever said about our community we grow up and we hear the bad you hear the bad all over the place you watch movies we're represented poorly in movies if you look on social media there's just horrible comments all through any type of post around trans people

105lgbtq plus people and it's really frustrating that there's nothing good ever said and that affirmation just hearing somebody say being trans being gay being queer is good is so powerful such a huge statement and is life-changing it can literally save lives of lgbtq youth thought of suicide any other group if cisgender people came in and said 40 of cisgender people on a suicide there would be all kinds of actions being taken but here we're we're debating whether we need a policy for a flag and raising the flag is proper use of your government speech you're legally given government speech as an elected body you can raise that flag no matter what your policy says you're able to raise that flag and i'm really grateful that you brought it up that you can raise the flag

106and adjust the policy in the meantime i think that's the right solution because i think this moment really calls not only does this affect our community as well just hearing that we're bad hearing that we're wrong everybody hears that that young person who's scared to go to the bathroom because if there's a transgender person who's about that's what they hear when they see those same things they hear that we're bad we're wrong but maybe when they see that high flag raised up on the raise up on the flagpole they might think you know what maybe that's wrong maybe maybe they're good maybe i don't need to be scared so it does affect us all it affects every one of us thank you for sharing your time [Applause] [Music] all right then we'll move on to

107gina garrettson followed by curtis bernano um hi my name is garrickson and i've been a martinez resident for 10 years i currently reside in area one of the trustees um and i'd like to speak in favor of the resolution i've been a girl scout volunteer and leader for almost eight years and this year at the beginning of the school year i asked the scouts what's the cause that's important to you and they said the trevor project and that is an organization that works to eliminate suicide and help with mental health problems amongst our lgbtq students and when i researched that i learned that our students our lgbtq students are more likely to commit suicide than those who don't identify with that group this is a marginalized and at-risk group and i am happy to come

108from a tradition of american education that puts forward policy and disrupts our systems to include such marginalized groups such as ethnicity your first year language of origin your abilities or disabilities how much money you have in your pocket all throughout our historical our history as an education system we've made efforts to include these marginalized groups i heard from my own trustee carlos that he is concerned that the pride flag may not represent everyone and my response to that is i'm okay with that because my child is a student at a martinez junior high she does not identify with this group but we've taught her that representation for another group it doesn't take away anything from you actually it makes a pathway for inclusion or whatever it is you want to identify as tomorrow this flag

109is a representation to a generation of safety of inclusion of a place where they can come and be themselves yesterday i was teaching a group of brownie girl scouts about inclusion and i brought out a big balloon rainbow and i asked them which color is the best so they all had their favorite and then i asked well which one is the most important one girl said red and then another girl said they're all equally important because you can't have a rainbow without any of the colors and the lesson in that was that we all belong we all belong in our school district no matter how we identify the color of our skin our background which area we live in all of those situations so i would encourage you and thank you for the opportunity and

110for me to speak to this point and i hope that we'll see the black [Applause] stevens [Music] all right so um my name is curtis bonanno i'm a biology teacher and the environmental science teacher at alhambra high school i'm new to the district this year um and i'm also gay and when i heard from my student co-four who's in my ap environmental science class fantastic student that there's some reluctance to flying the pride flag um i felt scared felt scared um and i felt a little bit saddened um felt a little bit angry um and basically when i heard that um i thought about all the laws being passed in state legislatures throughout our country um most people know about the don't say gay bill in florida kind of the thing with that is trying

111to seek to make people like me invisible trying to make it so it's illegal to talk about people like me even existing um third graders so when i heard that at our district there's some reluctance to say that hey we have gay staff members we have gay students um i told my students that hey i'm a gay man if you wanted to be here to support me they couldn't make it like a little too much homework um that you know this this was something that i cared about and that um for me um as an educators queer it is really important that um i am visible i'm visible to all the students who are like me in high school and middle school and didn't have any representation didn't see any gay teachers or any gay

112people and in fact saw when they were in middle school the state of california voted away the right for people like me to get married um so that visibility is something that i really think is the most important part of this resolution um i don't know where other district resolutions go but i know they're not really posted around schools they're not really hung on a flagpole um when something like this gets passed there's a lot of this you know talking statements been made but the real statement comes when everybody drives past the district and they see that product like flying they know that martinez unified supports all of their students who are currently in their schools and will be in their schools in the future and support all educators um who identify as queer or

113who are allies of the community who are going to be coming through and being employed by the district so that's all i gotta say thank you are john stevens good evening thank you board members and uh staff for allowing us to speak on this issue this evening and i really want to applaud the students here who have come forward it's an issue that i've been working on for many many years i've been out of high school for 50 years i've forgotten a few things but i never had an instructor who came out said he was gay and thank you very much for being leaders on that i wanted i actually was going to talk about something totally different i heard we all had to say this i just want to say that one of the

114things that i remember i wrote in it by the way that was largely jewish and one of my friends said to me after we were in high school found out that i was gay and it's that much you've been taught you couldn't go home and tell your family i said right i couldn't go home to my mother like you could go hey guess what mom i'm jewish is that okay because you've been going well of course it's okay i'm jewish too you need to go home and have that conversation with your family there was nowhere for me to go many of these people may not be able to go along with their family and many others that leaves it up to our educational system to help them to nurture them for them to love themselves

115and for other people to love them raising that that flag says you were valued as much as any other human being in this school and it does apply to everyone in that respect it applies to every human being it is about decency my last comment is about this and i was getting my master's in public administration and i had a great professor i focused in the area of management and policy and dr rowe said several qualities about seven policy and those include conflict and uncertainty and what i'm talking about is what you were talking about today uncertainty about is this health scene really going to work and he said one other thing it's also always full of unfinished business this is exactly what board member martin was addressing let's go ahead and do what we

116have here today we may have to change it later in the scholarly words of henry grove she's right thank you [Applause] as a parent and student and me member in this district i applaud our district our board members for bringing forward this point for discussions very important issue i want to express my my whole support for this resolution but not without the the last uh statements regarding flying the flag itself without these last two statements uh acknowledging and calling to the flying of the flag the first several statements have no meaning without actually flying the flag we have to look at those first statements of how can the district model advocate actively support or promote inclusion and respectful treatment of all students without flying the flag how are we able to provide a safe and

117inclusive environment free from discrimination without flying the flag how are we committed to providing a safe nurturing and tolerant environment in our schools all of these will just be words without action and as board member sequenza mentioned a proclamation for proclamation sake uh there was a concern there's a lot more concern over um the message that flying the flag would send to other potential unknown or entirely hypothetical groups that may or may not be asking you to to fly their flag i would be more concerned over that i would be more concerned about the message that we're sending to our students by not flying the flood fear of what we're saying to other groups then it opens some door and some red carpet for us to fly any flag that anybody wants is unfounded as

118we as as you are a body that is capable of updating that policy of setting standards of making sure that whatever group comes before you is in line with our values as a school district i don't really know why that's a concern that's something completely within that control so i ask for full support of this proclamation in words and in action thank you [Applause] good evening board members anna marie i too i'm here to support the raising of the black visibly and proudly throughout our district i also want to acknowledge our community members and the lgbtq community that's here tonight to speak we see you here to support you and i'm very thankful for the women board members who are the mama bears here that we're here to support we are parents and we should

119all care about all children and this is important for our community to take a position and to support these community members that are not seeing the most vulnerable and the most marginalized community members are the ones that need our help we show allyship by showing being prideful raising that back in our community so please do not disappoint tonight i'd love to see a 500 vote tonight thank you [Applause] the first comment is from sarah bragg i'm a third generation nusd graduate and parent and i'm asking the trustees to raise the progress pride flag the flag is a signal to our lgbtq plus students that they are seen and supported by the adults in charge of their education it tells them their safety and that of their lgbtq plus parents educators and district employees is important

120and that the adults in their lives are committed to listening and learning you have that opportunity to let them know that they are valued by way of a symbolic action already undertaken by our surrounding districts this gesture is meaningful to the kids who are out those who are already accepted and have a safe place with their parents it is even more critical for those kids who aren't those kids who know they can't go to their parents or are scared to do so need that signal to come from other adults in their lives i have heard there are concerns that the flag will raise questions from the community i ask you to borrow from the bravery of our young people who are courageous enough to live as their authentic selves in the face of our regular

121bigotry and bullying in our schools and answering those questions i ask you to consider the most important question if the flying is a message of ldgtq plus people are welcome in our schools and community what message is sent when adults in charge refuse the next comment is from lisa guy hello superintendent rossi i would like to ask my letter we read aloud during public comment on item 17.2 of tomorrow's board meeting members of the martinez unified school district board my name is lisa gotti i have two children by a school district i'm writing to strongly encourage you to vote to recognize pride them and fly the pride flag as you consider your decision i would ask the following what is the message to our community when we pass a revolution of support for a marginalized

122group but vote against making that support visible if all 19 cities in our county and many local school districts proudly fled the flag without an issue what do you believe makes students so martinez more difficult i would argue that if there is something that makes showing visible support for lgbtq plus community uniquely problematic for martinez then that is precisely what makes doing so so important would you have hesitated to make your support for civil rights visible this moment is no different right now the rights and safety of the lgbtq plus community are being attacked across our country in very real ways now is when it's important to show your support thank you for centering your vote on the children in which this district starts hello mr rossi i would like to start by saying thank

123you for the job you are doing for the current situation our country is in dealing with the school district's concerns must be very difficult to say the least i am a mother of two my dollar is four and a half years old and my son just turned 16 months my husband and i have always taught our children to respect others to be kind and to most importantly rest my and most importantly my rest people as you would like to be treated it is our belief that the school district has a duty to uphold inclusion for all no matter the person's gender race or religious belief we also feel that raising awareness for lgbtqia community will have a tremendous effect on how other communities should be treated as well thank you greetings thank you for your

124time sincerely thank you all right so that can bring it back is further discussion before or since this is an action either we can uh entertain emotion i'd like to make the motion if no one else has anything we'd like to say first i move to approve this resolution as written and i will happily second my question all in paper can you opposed abstentions standing okay uh [Applause] [Music] all right um and thank you all for for being here and providing your comments and um we'd love for you to stay with us as well all right so 17.3 is the public employee appointment position um so um just to refresh the board members we have appointed um helen rossi as our interim superintendent [Music] about reconciling um compensating our inner superintendent for the job that

125she's doing and increasing her pay to that of the current superintendent the previous superintendent salary um and that in south that would include the prior superintendent salary based on um the longevity which is over a 12-year longevity which we have for our administrators uh and the ten percent or the the me too uh edition that which would have happened we've offered all of our other employees if that makes sense um so are there any is there any more discussion we do have to do this and um we don't don't do all of this in public and i know it's probably very uncomfortable but um it's something that we have to do so is there any questions that hopefully i can address uh and if not we'll look into that for put up a comment and

126remove this off for action any questions for clarification from the board no there's no attachment so just based so so what i always advise is that what we decide to do tonight we put into um we put into a document that we then wrap that that becomes part of the agreement and obviously those are things in our financial it's part of an employee file all right so does everybody have an understanding of what we're doing we're essentially paying helen what the very minimum of what she's owed for doing the superintendent job as a superintendent and we're giving her a nice big thank you for continuing to do her other job which is okay um do we have any public comment on this are you seeing none um if if you'll allow me to make the

127motion it might be clearer um so i moved to compensate our interim superintendent for the base pay salary for the superintendent of 210 000 and allowing her with the longevity piece and uh i'm sorry the negotiated settlement within the rest of the district so yeah all right move to second all in favor opposed abstentions [Laughter] so um so we'll move on with that um and we're gonna move on to 17.4 which is the survey regarding superintendents um superintendency this is um it says it's presented by alan but it's my understanding that katie you're gonna kick this off uh since you are the one of the two members on our subcommittee yes thank you and i will just say to those watching and definitely until i'm three years out of the classroom because my presentation game

128is off so bear with me on the presentation and not as good as the staff usually gives us so um basically we kept the survey open for a week we had um i believe it was 338 responses um you're gonna so a couple of notes as i go through this i'll i'll kind of make it make a little bit more sense there's two documents that were attached this afternoon so i apologize for the late attachment but they are available as public documents we did not collect emails so these are all fully anonymous but because we created this subcommittee it is a matter of public information public records so the full results in just their raw data are available in a spreadsheet which would be kind of insane to try to present so what i did

129is i kind of tried to aggregate the data a little bit in a way that makes sense so i'll kind of go through what i did leave out of this was there were a couple of questions where people could add additional comments and i didn't do that because i just didn't feel right trying to i didn't know that i could really draw conclusions from that and i just didn't want to cherry-pick any data by you know picking someone's comment and leaving others out so this is kind of the the responses that have multiple choice options but i will and that good board's had a chance to also review it so if we see any kind of trends through those comments that we feel like may be valuable to share them that's we can do that

130too so then go to the do i have is this up there we go okay so first question was um really simple do you reside within the martinez unified school district boundaries um so you can see 82.8 percent of the respondents said yes um 17.2 said no and i think it's going to become clear why that chunky is there because that doesn't mean that they're still not a stakeholder as you'll see in upcoming slides so go ahead and go to the next one um do you have a child or children attending an and usd school yes it was about 73 no was about 26 percent okay and then this is the one where um type of stakeholders oh no sorry this is uh what site does your child or children attend and so of course

131this could have multiple respondents because you know a parent could have kids at three different sites or more so uh you can kind of see with the elementary schools they were i mean i think that that's a pretty fair representation less responses from los angeles than any of our other elementaries um and then i think as expected more from the junior high on the high school and then um unfortunately no representation from the merchandise of double education and just one from the early intervention preschool program okay and then this is the one where stakeholders so you can see we had 34 of our respondents our staff um or teachers and so i think that's that's a significant chunk that may also not live in the boundaries but are still obviously important stakeholders to hear that

132voice and some other categories we have been a current musd parent resident without children currently in the school district current and usc student i know i know because i really wanted to get a lot but we've got the eight students responding um we got something uh grandparent guardian or other and i would rather not say no one responded in that way so we got pretty good data there go ahead to the next one okay this the copying and pasting and the formatting was kind of difficult so i apologize for that and that's why the highlighted yellow at the bottom so that you can see the actual whole question so this was thinking about our next superintendent's professional experience please select your top three priorities and we did have some you know some definite data here

133that i think we have um some strong strong preferences here so the first was uh proven track representation yeah proven track record of raising student achievement that was people's first priority um and then followed by uh site administration experience followed by and pretty closely the next two experience working with a district similar in size to that of musd and strong knowledge and experience with district budget budget and financial matters what other folks responded to this and another were options where you could select another and make your own comment but there would be no way it was just one you know it would be like one response and they were all unique and so if folks are interested in finding out what those responses are that's something that you could look at the spreadsheet and see

134what people specifically included for their other responses but i think we kind of saw some clear trends here with the choices given uh okay so then the next one is thinking about our next superintendent's professional qualities please select your top three so again we had some clear um we had excellent communication that was something that people really wanted oral and written one good communication from our superintendent um this one and i'm sorry i didn't put the full questions they didn't sorry i missed that uh but the last one demonstrates ability to think outside the box to solve difficult problems so that was actually another um popular choice and then maintains visibility and accessibility so people really wanted to see a person on our sites accessible out in the community and some of the other ones

135were experiencing experience successfully managing an executive team that's that top one uh being culturally responsive creating a collaborative work environment um ability to manage multiple projects at once exceedingly responsive with follow through so following through with communications and then this had to do with recognizing valuing and affirming staff members okay and then the last one what areas of concern require immediate attention within our district so this question i think this gives us a lot of really great data and when we move forward we're going to be able to you know potentially create goals for our superintendent around these things knowing that these are some things that's really important to people so the top one was improving student behavior and disciplinary practices on campus on our campuses addressing learning loss due to the pandemic and that

136was followed by supporting our site administrators so um the other categories there were improving our school site facilities and adding additional college and career pathways for our high school students increasing equity training for staff and students adopting curriculum in line with our district equity goals improving athletics facilities increasing athletic opportunities for students and improving existing athletic programs and increasing professional development opportunities for teachers and staff so again i think this is kind of a snapshot overview if you want to really do a deep dive into the raw data it was also attached and so you're welcome to do that one comment i will say just since we already approved our last action item too is i would be remiss not to say how many people specifically called helen rossi for the job that she's she's

137doing and there was a lot of support for her potentially moving forward in this position also that was the time i saw [Music] yeah yeah so yeah that's okay all right well thank you for that um carlos you want your i know you guys work together on this and and thank you guys for i know that i know that i know you you somehow find time to to make this work and to do it and i i think we all agree that the questions that you put uh put out the last time were really good um and i think we got we got data that is that is helpful on many different levels for us which is great did you have did you want to supplement with anything or no respond and just you know

138identify some of the issues we had early on so i think it was good obviously more numbers were getting better but i'm actually really impressed with it with the numbers that's a that's a lot of people i think is a really good cross section um i i've done this a couple times so i thought i'd give you my from what i recall these are pretty similar to the last couple times we've asked our stakeholders things that are important to them and to me that that means that we're still serving as a similar type of population but that there's a certain expectation of leadership style good or bad or different i wanted to share that with you because obviously the communication is the number one thing every subcommittee i've ever found every i mean every meeting

139whether it's at the site not related to the school board i think we always hear that um so i wasn't surprised that that was um data the rest of the stuff is pretty much in line with what i recall jeremy these are isn't that about right you you did this survey the last time but and i think when we did it before that it was it was pretty similar um and i know that some of the data said people always commented someone was going to stick around well we can't we can't guarantee that i understand the sentiments and i said i really understand um but but i you know that is something that we obviously um can't do i think it's more of a feeling um but yeah i think i think these results are

140similar to our last one um yeah certainly similar to what i've heard out in the community as far as priorities go so um [Music] yeah i mean thank you both um i'm sure this was a lot of time and uh i mean i i sometimes i noticed in the comments that people were able to write an event i did notice there were several comments that said you already have helen rossi doing a great job where are you looking for someone else um we also did have a lot of comments that said someone will stay a long time which as our board president said we can't really control that although i think someone that's invested in the community and has shown that is a good start that's really all we can do um and i the

141other trends i saw were there a lot of comments about someone you know someone who um believed in and practiced transparency and had good communication skills and also um someone that would improve discipline and behavior so um i think those are the biggest that that i noticed and i i just thought that this was really um helpful and like you said what will also i think help us focus uh going forward not just the superintendent not not just on who we hire but some of our goals uh in the years to come um do you want me to open this up and then we'll bring it back for the discussion is there a problem all right let's see now it's back to us we did put it as an action item because if someone wanted

142to make international items they're free to we're free to entertain that i mean ultimately we understand that this is a decision that the board makes as far as um you know what we're going to do next how we're going to do that um is there some discussion as to i mean really the way i see it we have we have two ways to do it we we post or we appoint those are our two those are our two options um i would like to move on with this as soon as we can because i think in my mind the stability of the districts um is super important and we owe that to all of our state holders to kind of make a decision here pretty soon so that's my month yeah i mean i um

143seeing these results there's nothing here that tells me that we have need to go out because i think that all of the qualities and all the things that are really important to the community when you see these trends are [Music] present in our interim superintendent i think we have that we have a level of dedication to the community record she's held every single position here basically it feels like it's a whole school district but in in district office she's held various different positions and so knows how to manage all of these different apartment departments um so i'm not really keen on let's go spend twenty two thousand dollars to find someone who may or may not be able to do the job that needs to be done that's where i am and i feel like

144this really supports that and the kinds of things that we're looking for and we are [Music] we have to we have to negotiate a contract so we can maybe give direction i can work on that um and we can have it at a close at our next closed session if that would be um the direction i guess that i i get that that's that's the direction yeah i agree and so to clarify on that yeah i think you'd be authorized to be sort of in that direction and then we would figure out if that's something if that's where we go um and then we can we can we can do that process as as we've done previously with regard to that position i don't have a problem with any of this my only concern is

145that i think the last time we talked about this um we were really kind of talking about well are we gonna hire a firm to search and blah blah blah and um what's on the agenda tonight is just the survey and i'm just concerned that we might get some you know well how come you didn't put appointing someone on the agenda and give the public a chance to comment on that thank you um so one of the one of the things is this is we're not taking action so um and if we were to move forward um obviously there's there's multiple opportunities i mean just because we have closed session and we discuss something there's still opportunity for people um and then whatever happens with the superintendent that's always open that's always done in an

146open session so even you know if we do move forward with an appointment just like if we appointed um through through a higher firm process uh it would they would go through the process and then have another formal discussion on it that's that's not we have to report it out so so it's it's a closed session meaning since it's personnel but it is open from public comment before okay so i wanted to make sure that if the public wanted to comment they would have an opportunity we we have hired a couple of people over the last couple of weeks and i don't recall that there's always been a chance for the public to comment on that so i just wanted to throw that out there yeah no i think and and tonight was and i

147think what we're doing is we're we're talking about what's next steps we're not taking any action i mean obviously we can um until it becomes an action item we continue to explore different things um what we got to do is we got to weigh what community input was and from there we have to make our decision um and yeah jeremy touched on something that we don't really talk about and say we get a lot of communication from people that live in our districts right now and are out in the community who aren't always represented here but that's what we take to the table when we do that so i think that's important too especially now that the um the publicist has some time to take olynyk surveys um i wouldn't imagine this timeline moving quickly

148because nothing ever nothing ever does so we're talking you know may at the earliest june likely um before there's any sort of action on this particular item anyways so carlos did you have um thoughts no i think it could be a good utilization of resources to avoid a recruitment effort when we've done quite a bit of commentary back on endorsing uh helen and yeah obviously making sure that the community sells the opportunity to bring it up discuss it and address it but endorse that okay so um we can explore that obviously we tonight and we can continue to gather information if there's something uh that we need to discuss further obviously okay all right so thank you for um giving us the information uh and we'll bring it back for our next board meeting um

14917.5 is it's not a lot of you guys sorry um now let's go a little bit further so we know how long we have to make a question for um okay 17.5 is martinez unified school district facilities this is alibaba high school tennis courts project isn't information if i wanted to put it on here [Laughter] [Music] we looked at our summer projects and one of the summer projects was to repair the one side of the quartz that wasn't repaired in the last program and resurfaced and fixed the cracks in the tennis courts at albany high school so a point was brought up that in the recent past which we found was the board had approved over 2 million 100 in stabilizing the hillside to fix the problem um to help it's never going to be

150fixed because the hillside was made into tennis courts just like with other you know buildings like the d building and so on and so forth in the track so there's constant movement and so the point was brought up that we'd already spent over 2 million and then we between the 22 2.1 million and the current estimate of almost two hundred thousand dollars to do the repair of just half of the courts we spent another sixty to seventy thousand dollars on repairing the tennis courts in between twice yes so the board is tonight um joe schoenstein our project coordinator wrote the fact that for eight hundred thousand dollars we could do something called put in a poster attention slab to eliminate these frequent need of repairs due to the hillside movement and [Music] if in talking

151about that if the board wanted to do that we'll explain that in a minute we would put off the fixing of the tennis courts for a year because we have to fix the track and we couldn't do both projects at the same time with the amount of work that has to go into the um the post-retention slab it'll effectively float on top of the right and which would stop the problem of the cracks not stopping the deep the deep breath due to the use of the hillside so um i brought it here tonight just to talk about that because we have to book our our summer targets right now on the calendar and you figure if we're spending if it's 200 000 now just to fix half of it in another couple years i'm sure

152we're going to be fixing the other half of it and this is going to be a continual band-aid on something we can do in one shot here so um we're just bringing it up for conversation and discussion this evening what else i think that was uh that was all that was uh mentioned um so [Music] yeah so i've been around here a while it just kind of dawned on me that we spent a ton of money up there and if you actually run the money i i it wasn't that hillside wasn't just for the tennis courts we did we [Music] but the problem becomes if you do the math on this we're essentially replacing the same as the turf field right and in the same amount of time it's about a 1.1 million dollars to

153replace the lower field so we we figure you have to be saving a hundred thousand dollars plus a year in your reserve to be able to replace it okay now we're talking a tennis courts and [Music] it just seems like a lot of money to be continually knowing that we're gonna have to continue to do this um it's almost twice as much it's just replacing the field so i thought instead of having it on this year's summer project list maybe we need to think of a way that we can at least stop the bleeding a little bit on the tennis courts even if it means it's one year and i don't know how they're great some of them are pretty bad some of the courts in the back but i think they're possibly usable at

154least six of them maybe just four of them um and maybe we can be creative i know there's other schools that don't have eight courts since most of them have six um but if we have to do it for a year so that we can repair them and repair them to do a way that we're not going to continue to have to throw that kind of money i think it's worth as a board taking a look at rather than just saying yeah throw another 200 on it and let's deal with it in another two years another thing joe thought of and he called me about this this morning is he needs to look into the feasibility apparently there are basketball hoops on the tennis courts and how that would impact this lab probably the putting

155down the posts into there may not be a good thing so we'd have to look at that as well so he's investigating that right now um just because you have to drill down and then make them stable into this lab and it might take away from the purpose of having this lab so that's he's looking into that so i'd like to advocate um in addition to this i guess we're on top of this is doing a geotech report for the area and figuring out if that is the best solution based on the soil conditions if there's opportunities to address the soil conditions whether it be watery you know so mixing whatever it might be to fix the problem comprehensively to track the tennis courts and uh and possibly even grant funding and additional state participation

156by conserving the water and processing [Music] to look at the the water from the up around the track that we talked about to see if we there's a better solution to stop that there as even though they are fixing that if we can stop the excess water so he i gave him permission to go ahead and bring someone in to take a look at that as well so i think it's all in combination that one whole thing [Applause] and that's going to happen regardless because we're getting that track fixed yes that's how that the engineer person will be out soon the track is so the city of martinez is actually considering a repair of tennis courts at kidney valley so across the street from the park there's a couple tennis courts in there the repair

157they're considering is called the slip sheet or something i'm not an engineer so i don't know what it is but that seemed to be a more physically efficient repair rather than taking out the entire concrete base of the status quo so i don't know if you can check that out but in the geotechnical conditions are probably different in the two areas i don't know if it's a if it's a feasible fix but the city of martinez is actually looking at a repair of their extension i will um give it to joe to investigate it's probably i mean it's still probably going to be 10 years i mean i think we've been lucky that's on a huge house the thing is is that we're we're now putting you know every decade we're putting a million and

158a half plus and on the ghosting tennis courts um so you know if we take a year to review this maybe we find a different location too i think that's where i was going as we talked about in our facility um there are you know we do have updated the future plans for al camera which of course would be changed should we decide to go up for our bond really back in so it may be something that we look forward to in the next year to see how we can relocate them so it's not so much of a problem so so everything is open right now i just i would just hate to you know just i just need to give you the facts about spending this amount of money on the project that we

159just keep spending this amount of money do we have any do we have any public comments on this okay so this is for this is for information um oh i'm sorry well i don't know that i have comments because i've got a lot of comments on this a very frequent user of all of these places and that helen brought up kind of my main concern and my main interest um in that over this next year that the reviewing of the possibility of just some complete uh rearranging of athletic spaces to stop trying to fight that hill i mean it's just a continual process and i think that's a well-established fact at this point and while i imagine that it's really unthinkable about trying the the thought of trying to redo our lower the knowledge field

160because uh because that has been somewhat recent uh the actual thought of moving a track back down to the track and tennis courts because that's a very large flat space and this has been something that's been tossed around um i really like to see some more discussion on the feasibility of that that traditional new track and football setup and then where the baseball field is now uh being a large enough area for tennis courts and even more field houses storage you name it that's that's been something that we as frequent users on campus have discussed quite a bit and there's probably issues with that as well but i think we're at a crossroads here especially if we're going to consider bond and really need to kind of just make it wider than the possibilities of

161rearranging these facilities thank you all right um so this is only for information so we can't take any action but do we give you enough direction okay all right um i need to entertain a motion to continue our meeting to 9 45. has anyone wanted to do that okay sorry all in favor all right [Music] um 17.6 review of single plans for student achievement it's an information item that says your name will test so tonight this is an information item and all the plans are listed for you to review with the exception of alhambra i will be bringing forth alejandra's at a later date with the transition in the administration they are in the process of being brought back to the school site council for review um the school plan for student achievement is a

162comprehensive document it provides details about the school's planned actions and expenditures to support student outcomes and overall performance all sixes are aligned with the goals and actions of the local control accountability plan rflcat which lays out goals for the entire district the annual process of developing reviewing and updating the subset is conducted by each school site council which is a collaborative advisory group made up of school staff parents community members at the secondary level students so these plans are quite extensive i want to thank all the school site councils from all the school sites as well as the administrators um and once the plans are approved by the board the plans will be available on our district website and that's the sites great thank you are there any more questions any public comments [Music] uh

163agenda i hope so i'll have to check in with our next school science council that sepsis worked with us since it was brought to the hospital site council but they need to review it again is there any is there any timeline that we're concerned with they don't get here quick enough sorry i mean i know we need to get it done but i'm just thinking do we have to do a special meeting if we don't i don't think okay great thank you um i'll keep you on the hook i think you get the next one which is 17.7 expanded learning opportunities so the expanded learning opportunities program plan is a new program it's a plan um that was developed in legislation in 2021 so it's brand new it's new to everybody and uh it's the

164intention is for um for us to give opportunities to um for lease we'll offer students tk through six uh particularly our unduplicated students comprehensive after school and inter session extended learning opportunities so intersession would be um school breaks and uh so like winter or summer so that's okay so um yes thank you so um it's also so it's providing services for like academics kind of um after school tutoring or like with um so it's before school or after school um the funds can't be used for um like during the day school so it can't be used for like lunch programs or recess and it's mainly for like enrichment so and it also gives families the flexibility to participate kind of based on their needs some of the requirements are that we have to develop this

165um we're calling a dop plan and it has to be brought forth to the board and then approved and um it's a nine-hour program for um during the school day so that counts the instructional minutes of the school day but it also includes the before and after school day um so the nine hours is for the school days does that make sense i see you kind of wondering no so a school so like um so for example we have our hours during the school day an extended learning plan wants um to extend the hours to a nine-hour program so within our school day those hours count so when the kids are in school that counts as the hours towards the nine hour program but in addition that after school or before school will include to

166make up that total of nine hours do we have to do it for nine hours we have to provide it yeah parents don't have to um their students don't have to participate for those full hours like after school or before school but we have to provide that nine-hour program every day five days a week so monday through friday yeah and then the intersession would be so those additional 30 days on top of like school days so christmas break spring break summer thanksgiving break and are those nine hour days too um yeah okay [Music] [Applause] so uh the program is offered to um all students like 10k through six that's the program's intention but they also know that it's a new plan and so we're developing and know that it's like a slow process um to

167get all of those kids included because it's brand new so they're kind of giving us time to develop a plan they know it's a it's a living document so it can be adapted and changed we need it to meet our needs of our community and our students and so this is was kind of like the planning here they wanted us to start it this year but understood under the circumstances that there was a lot going on so we're starting kind of the implementation of it starting this summer and then going into the 2022-23 school year another thing that they really want is to have community partnerships so it's a plan that they really want the districts and leas to reach out to canadian partners and the ratio for it is first through sixth is 20

168to one but tk programs have a 10 to 1 ratio meaning 10 students to one teacher and the state is anticipating that this will be part of our district's apportionment in the future years and so they're planning to do ongoing funding so it's not like a it's going to end in a certain year so right now they're planning to offer this money every year thank you so part of our plan is to partner with woodbridge so starting this summer we're providing a summer school program within the district for current k-5 students it's it's right now it's invitation only just being based on our staffing issues we don't have enough staff to um invite every student that that we could we're giving priority to our unduplicated students that's what the yellow p plan is uh um

169recognizing so priority to english learners foster youth homeless and our socioeconomically disadvantaged identified students focusing on students who are struggling in math and reading that's our summer program and the program will have um intervention and read their enrichment components to give students a well-rounded rounded and balanced experience students are referred to participation by teachers and school sites and students are recommended will receive communication from the district and all the enrollment details and we're also offering enrichment at the junior high again like we did last year um so that's the district summer school plan and then we'll go to the next line and then bringing in uh woodbridge as part of that summer plan uh also our elementary is going to be at john muir elementary so we'll have woodbridge at john muir elementary and their

170program is set up in two week increments like our summer program so they align and they offer academic support they offer healthy fitness recreational enrichment components so the support components consist of homework assistance intervention and focus area so working really closely with the educational services department um and with the woodbridge director psych principals so it'll be that very like kind of cohesive program so during the school year woodbridge children's center provides child care on weekdays before and after school woodbridge is open for winter and spring break fun weeks so that helps meet that 30-day criteria and then also with the summer camps and they offer a whole day program activities like including like travel field trips as well as in-house field trip adventures so that's kind of where we're starting with um our elop plan

171and starting at our two sites that have the most unduplicated students would be john mayer and lost for next school year but also knowing again that this is a living document so as needs arise we can change the document include sixth grade or we have some other activities at the other elementary sites we can include them as well are there any questions that's a lot i have a ton of questions and i don't know if it's not retaining because it's been a long long meeting um how many students are we are we initially with this first wave trying to reach because i think that's why i'm trying to wrap my head around it because it seems like that is a huge cost and it sounds fantastic um and that's great if someone's going to fund

172it for us i'm just i'm wondering if we're going to be stuck you know without funding in a year and really see the benefits of this and and try to i think that's what that's also why not because of the funding but because it's a huge project too of starting out smaller at those two sites we don't have an exact number because i have to um send out the invitations and how many parents want to enroll um so it's like really working with closely with woodbridge and their staffing as well because there's limitations on that so i mean are you thinking like 10 kids are we taking 40 kids no we're thinking like something between not no way more than 10 but maybe about 40 and it could probably go they do have um in

173the actual um requirements for the grant that it's not an optional grant but in their requirements they're we are required to reach out to a certain percentage in the first year of unduplicated that have to be involved in that program and then that um it kind of changes that over time but they did give us quite a bit of a substantial amount of money i think it's 441 000. yeah we have a little to to start with our first installment okay and it's um so it's like it's almost like two parts of this grant and how much money you get so we kind of fall we fall under or as a district for less than 80 percent of undue depleted students so that first year we have to at least reach 50 percent of our

174unduplicated students at this at those sites um families they can't afford to send their kids to woodridge um this would pay that that tuition if they if they get received free and reduced lunch they we cannot charge them to participate and that would be in the leverage and we can cover that with that money which would also help to boost attendance i just i have a hard time seeing how we could put 40 kids in a wood bridge um even 20 for a lot of the sites and then my other question was um is very requirements to having um certificated staff so i think they have to follow um it doesn't have to be certificated staff no but it's the ratios have to be that way so so do we i mean are we responsible

175for curriculum that we're using for arrangement that's being done at woodbridge so we could partner so that could be part of it as well we don't have to but we could partner also with like extra technology devices that we may have that we could um have them have their wood bridges as well so they can access excel they can act um so that's why it's a good partnership with woodbridge so we can work directly with them with any interventions or academic support or fast bridge data but also um including that enrichment piece where it's it's fun and they're getting that that extra curricular activities too and another thing um why why we're doing it during summer as well because we found a lot of families didn't participate last year because it was it was a

176half day so this gives the opportunity for families that weren't able to participate in summer school last year because of the day it was so short and that this would give them the opportunity to ex attend our summer school but also have that um after school here yeah i think i mean i've never understood half day summer camps i always say it's for taking for teachers kids i got the benefit of that being a teacher's kid but it's very difficult for working parents to get your kid to a three-hour program so i'm i'm glad that someone's acknowledged that they need that full writing and also too like if we're not able our summer school program for our elementary initially we wanted it to have two in two week sessions so a total of four but

177parents could pick either the two one of the two or all four but also we came into an issue where parents were on vacation and then that would take a spot from someone else who could stay about four weeks um so and then with this it would also enable our families to participate in that full day with bridge summer program if we are not offering that second um two-week session sorry any other questions on this i have a couple and you may have already said this and if you did i apologize it has been a long day um so my understanding from what you said is that we are required to offer this to all tequ for six students but we're going to give priority to unduplicatedness we're required to give access to all students

178so not necessarily invite but we have this program and we can um it can be on uh i'm lacking the word right now but um application okay i know it's all kind of tricky because it's all new and everybody's kind of like trying to decipher what all the rules are so that way we can make it a good plan and is this something we're thinking of starting like this june yes okay so oh you are so busy okay um okay i mean i like the idea i know it doesn't matter what i like or not because we have to do it but um i like the idea of after school and summer school i'm going to give my little editorial comment um i grew up in jamestown new york very similar sci school district to

179martinez their per people funding is 22 000 a year ours is like 12 000 so i feel like the state is always like finding ways to not increase not fully fund our schools but do all these little special programs and make more work for us any other questions yes okay yes okay so obviously a lot of information to download and process and um i'm understanding this correctly [Music] stop me right go straight we're talking about a year-long program for tk through 6th graders that part of that would be inclusive or represented during their class time at school so sometime before sometime after during the school year and then when summer comes would bridge would facilitate that that demand or time requirement um for the program correct so far so what bridge would also um help

180support us during the school year with the b4 right right and woodbridge so this is funding coming from the state to pay for this and woodbridge is a private organization that pays us for our facilities and utilization of space which we're going to be paid by the state to pay them to use facilities and these facilities don't currently include the use of the recreational facilities am i correct the gym the uh the playgrounds and full use of the school and multi-use for yeah sites okay but you're gonna assume i'm going transactions of dollars back and forth is going to get very very challenging it'll be under a contract we're under contract for at least they pay an annual fee um we are in the process of changing that because of las vegas [Music] facilities i'll

181wrap it up i'm just uh trying again it gets logistically challenging to corby's point and trying to satisfy need and just creating complete chaos and headache for the staff and checking the dollars we're talking about woodbridge just has a facility space so that's just facilities we're talking about contracting them for services so that would be different i don't really love it i mean to be to be fair i think it'd be nice if we could offer that kind of program internally not having to do that but i understand we don't really know what that looks like yet um i'm wondering is there a time thing is there is there a time issue for action because one we obviously have a ton of questions just because i don't think we under understand the scope of it

182um can we bring it back again um or i mean or maybe submit some other some some smaller questions because is there a date unadopted on when it has people approved does it have to be board approved or just it has to it has to be board approved there's no date when it has to be board approved but i was just trying to do it so we can implement the summer program but i mean i definitely think we need to do that but it sounds to me there's a lot of older questions and i don't quite have public questions too okay you're gonna have to let us do our meeting here um and we need to we need to make sure we have those answers and courtney asks is it open for everyone that to

183me is i think we need to have a set idea of who we're opening this up for for access and who's doing the approval and selecting it because as a working parent and this sounds fantastic but i don't think that for example i don't think my family would be the ones that should be receiving this kind of support and so i would like to make sure that we're we're identifying the right people um for the right for you know the right experience there is there are requirements for the unduplicated count there is also a fee for non-free and reduced lunch people we can put it on a sliding scale to something that we talked about based upon the sliding scale that um woodbridge uses that syntax i forget where they get their slime skill from

184the state from the state child care agency so it's from the but i know i read for a fact in something last week that freedom reduced lunch children don't have we can't charge them that's how they give us this money the reason we're using woodbridge is because on staffing for the program if we try to ask our teachers to stay for nine hours a day we're not going to have staffing i i'm being honest it's it's too much bridges in that business we can support them with our technology and all this and it's on our campuses so it's going to help our families because otherwise we're going to have to worry about how we're going to transport them so you know there's a lot of thought that went in there but we need to do

185a better job of explaining it all at the next me okay so what i was going to suggest just for maybe to help out because this is brand new to you but maybe would it be helpful if you bring it back for the next meeting that needy board members can submit specific questions to you and if community members have i guess email maybe that will help you kind of inform what it is that we're looking for and then i mean i think we're all more things happier today and and then bring it [Music] this is this is what i was going to be reacting to i was more interested in the other program i talked about the amtg plan anyway i've got clarification from that renee during our break so i'm kind of understanding that

186better but no this is um yeah you you've addressed it by saying it's going to be addressed at the next morning more questions are going to be asked the public will be able to comment so originally it was really about a to g that i got that clarified thank you thank you all right thank you okay so we'll bring it back in the future we'll try and get it as clear as we can um okay the next portion is 17.8 this is the first reading of csba updates uh and i'll turn this over to you okay so attached to the agenda of board policy and administrative rights that have been recommended for revision by csba we are as a district we are way behind they'll probably be 21 every agenda and so i tried to

187simplify it in um in the way that i i submitted it on here every just for because there are so many of you that have not done them or seen them the top sheet is is what we call our uh our checklist and it highlights the actual which policies are included in this month or this week and who actually did them the cabinet member's name and thank you to kevin frazier who kind of went through all of these for us and pulled it together she's been a lifesaver behind that i put in the guide sheet which actually tells you what was updated in that policy um and then on the actual policy there are highlights and those highlights are what have been changed um some of them have notes like this is revised or so

188on and so forth but you should be able to see the difference the new one is on top and then the old one is behind it and the highlighted changes are on the new one so you should be able to go through all four months and we'll just keep them coming if you have questions it would be helpful if you reached out to the individual cabinet member whose name is on the actual ig so that they can explain to you why we've chosen to take that adoption they are not all mandatory so we do not adopt and not all changes so just for a little context we are supposed to be doing these regularly and i can't think of we haven't done a couple years march 2019 okay so 2020. so you've done maybe one

189okay so in the in the past and we can obviously figure out how we want to do it moving forward but i think it's a little bit it's a little bit easier to digest so when we bring them for information if there's particular ones that someone wants to pull out and talk about um note it and they don't always have to come back the next time um most probably 80 90 95 of them um we're just catching up to what the encode requires us to do and they're pretty simple but we also want to make sure that there's a time to discuss them and assume normally if there is a question between this meeting and the next time they're brought forward and see if we can get ahold of staff um and then for my

190some will let me know for the agenda of coming forward we can pull certain pieces um sometimes uh in the past we've pulled certain ones and we've had discussions based on the changes the law falls near how it doesn't apply to this district um so that's what we've done that's what i've done in the past with with previous makes up makeups of the board um and it it tended to work we got a lot of work it takes a ton of time so however you want to digest it i mean i'm guilty of not always looking until right you know the day before um but if we can do it you know before that it comes up for um foreign any questions on these particular ones no all right um any public comment yeah okay

191so these ones unless there's unless there's something within this packet that you want specifically pulled out will most likely be here for our approval test meaning along with hopefully some other ones a little bit more okay all right so thanks everybody um we have been through [Music] uh does anyone else have anything to share i just want to thank everybody who's delighted all this stuff it's [Music] and also um we had some students and staff members come tonight and that what they did is really called speaking truth to power they gave us some very vulnerable and heartfelt um comments that i think were very brave so i just wanted to thank them for that and i'll just do one more quick one we had a couple of public comments and um dieter also mentioned that

192you know passing a resolution for the sake of a resolution isn't doing that much and so i'm really excited for i sit on the curriculum advisory council we have a lot of novels coming up which i'm really excited about that are going to be they'll come to the board and be you know hopefully adopted at a high school level and i think that the teachers who presented them really thoughtful about including a variety of text fiction nonfiction that's certainly a very wide representation of our student body and so i think that's really in keeping with a lot of the resolutions that we have passed so i'm excited that we will be able to put some of that action behind those resolutions um in the coming weeks and months and years you know in perpetuity and

193um we're gonna we're in jordan tonight i do want to let you know and we haven't asked her yet but um it's probably kothar's last meeting with us next um the next meeting that you've already spoken with okay because it's the senior awards night is going to be our final uh meeting in uh may so uh we hopefully will have our new representative is family appellant so uh oh good then we'll both be here so we're gonna do a little extra acknowledgement of them and which i wish you well and welcome so thank you everyone for your patience tonight you
