okay welcome everyone to the governing board meeting of the Mount Diablo Unified School District on November 10th 2021 call this meeting to order at 605 pm all right so we will begin with Pledge of Allegiance and roll call I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all foreign and we'll begin with roll call vice president Mason here trusty Mayo here trustee baller here trustee McLaren here trustee and Zoe here I'm also present so we are all accounted for um and we'll begin with our land acknowledgment we recognize that the Mount Diablo Unified School District sits on the territory of The confederated Villages of Liz John The ancestral and unseated land of the bay
bay Miwok and Northern yakut the successors of The Sovereign Verona band of Contra Costa County as members of the mdusd community it is vitally important that we not only recognize the history of the land on which we learn but also we recognize that the land we inhabit and learn on is the ancestral land of these people who are alive and flourishing members of mdusd and broader Bay Area communities today thank you and that takes us to 6.2 review and potential approval of the agenda any changes to the agenda this evening yeah um excuse me president count I'd like to pull item 11.2 okay thank you very much any other changes we have a motion to approve would we like to move the board reports as we have done recently we could do that however the
agenda is very short well we'll get them in early then maybe we just leave it as is what do you think so it's up to you okay I think we can leave it as this okay so I will go ahead and um make a motion to approve the agenda with item 11.2 being pulled publishing by trustee Mason second by trustee McFerrin and we'll take that to a vote trustee Fowler yes okay motion passes five five zero with concurrence from our student board member thank you okay so 7.0 report out taken in closed session item 7.1 negotiations the board may discuss negotiations or provide direction to its Representatives regarding represented employees pursuant to government code section 549-57.6 the board received information and provided Direction item 7.2 there was no item discussed for that one item 7.3
confidential student matters pursuant to Ed code 35145.51 case um there was a motion and vote 50 to approve the agreement as presented item 7.4 conference with legal counsel anticipated litigation potential exposure to litigation pursuant to 549-56.9 B one case the board received information okay and that takes us to public comment tonight we have four speakers this evening so you all can do your full three minutes uh three minute length and we'll begin with Doug Novotny followed by Amanda Graves we generally keep our masks on in the room thank you can you reset my time we can reset the time just a minute okay is it working I don't know yeah it is thank you thank you all right you may begin okay I'm no Pro so I'm here to speak about critical race series CRT
so call and I'm calling for parents to wake up everyone to speak up the so-called anti-racism desecrates my hero Martin Luther King there's been a tidal wave of rejection from parents that's just begun in Virginia last week and I think it's going to be much much bigger and you guys need to wake up to that and respond here at mdusd I hope that you are not members of the National Association of school boards although I fear you may be and I think you should reject the letter which they sent calling upon the Attorney General to investigate and challenge parents at domestic terrorists we are not terrorists there's no one here calling for violence there's no one you're making threats but we are angry about your malfeasance and we're going to speak up about this we're
going to do Freedom of Information requests to find out if you've been participating with that group and if you're doing other corrupt things in this way so we are angry about it now school is most media and many politicians say the CRT isn't being taught in the schools I understand that it's an insulting misdirection of course you're not teaching law school texts to K-12 but you are teaching teachers all the basic tenets of CRT I've studied this stuff I'm a PhD I know about it and it's it's insulting to do that it's dishonest it's actually worse when you don't teach the theory outright because then people can't see it as a theory to be challenged it's being snuck in like a trojan horse Tony lays it out well he said you do teach CRT to
teachers when you teach them to teach students different based on their color you teach them that the freedoms of Western Civilization are for fomenting white supremacy and somehow evil in that way secretly racist that capitalism is a tool of this straight from Kimberly crenshaw's book titled critical race Theory the toxic divisive lie that's spreading throughout the curriculum in English even math even under the guise of socio-emotional learning parents who are seeing this you need to wake up and see what they're teaching your children our children under the Guides of that it's poisonous racialized identity being hoisted on them word games Equity there's another trick sounds good but actually it doesn't mean equality at all means inequality on purpose taking from some to give to others based on race it means dumbing down accelerated programs straight
from Richard delgado's book called critical race Theory all teachings political that's straight from Gloria Ladson Boeing CRT and education it's anti-humanist according to them not me it's against MLK it's color of skin not content of character it's racial essentialism please stop doing it stop lying to us about it let MLK be our shared hero and return to your core Mission please teach subjects not racialized politics thank you next we have Amanda Graves followed by Ginger megley good evening so first I would like to say that I love my job I love my students and I was not planning on speaking tonight but that all changed after receiving Miss Harrington's email today at 3 45 and I decided that speaking up was important I teach my two children who are here today and my 30 students
that being an upstander is important today I will be that upstander I can't sit quietly while I feel verbally attacked unfortunately by my own School District that I teach it you're not just making me look bad but my fellow Educators as well the email sent by Miss Harrington on behalf of ndsd was kind of appalling and quite sad media and mbusd have been in negotiation for months not just on salary but other important issues such as class sizes combo classes and nurse caseloads mdusd would not negotiate salary with media until October 28th the reason that was told to Medea was because the district needed to hire School Services of California to assist in looking at finances Miss Harrington's email says media is proposing higher cost items such as large pay increases reduced class sizes and
high pay for covering classes when substitutes are not available teachers can move up the pay ladder it costs money to do so it cost me about fifteen thousand dollars to get my continuing education units not every teacher can afford that I am blessed that I can but I don't get paid fifteen thousand dollars extra each year it's going to take me a long time to move up the pay scale to do so so while I could afford to do that some of my colleagues can't reduce cost sizes yes teachers are asking for reduced class sizes can you really tell me parents don't want smaller class sizes I have 30 students in my class it's popped because I'm a combo class my neighbor is a second grade teacher she has 32 second grade students in her
class 32. higher pay for covering class sizes I'm actually going to cost that off because I'm running out of time so again miss Harrington mentioned that teachers received a bonus of fifteen hundred dollars absolutely correct my two children went to daycare morning and after school cost about 900 a month it went up to twenty four hundred dollars a month during the pandemic so that fifteen hundred dollars for a lot of families did not go far BayCare is still expensive and positions oh excuse me I just wrote this while I was at my son's football practice so it's not as eloquent as I would like so the closing paragraph today from Miss Harrington's email said the district team will continue to focus on a higher level education experience for all students while supporting the needs of
the community and being fiscally fiscally responsible can we start being physically responsible not by not agreeing to spend 194 thousand dollars on baked goods tonight when the bid was originally twenty four thousand dollars can we can we be fiscal responsible by not getting new work trucks and cars that were barely 10 years old can we be fiscally responsible by not hiring outside companies such as California school services to look at our budget can we be more fiscal responsible by not paying fifteen thousand dollars for Roth eye Consulting so email said tonight are hurtful teachers have teachers love the children we're in it for the children not for the money at the same time asking to be paid a living wage should not look down upon thank you Ginger megley followed by Holly Pitts good evening
board members superintendent Clark my name is ginger megley I'm a second grade teacher at Valhalla I've been with the district for over 20 20 years I have a few things to say first of all don't be deceived by our load numbers here most of us are busy working on report cards that are due so teachers work really hard and we this to come here to do this it takes time away from our students but we do it because it's important but we're tired of coming here we're tired of protesting we're tired of wearing our blue shirts we want to get on with it most teachers I know are angry they're frustrated and they're ready to strike and that happened at your first proposal we were very devastated and it was very insulting now we've been
asking for lower class sizes for a long time I think our parents would want to know that San Ramon has class sizes of 24. Moraga 21. New Mexico 18 Spokane Washington 18 Utah 15. I could go on and on 31 in a class of Primary students is just not working and right now our kids are coming to school with because of covid and distance learning with immense needs and it's just too hard for us and it's we're not getting we're not meeting their needs it's too hard now there's more to this class size than just the teachers having a less work load the class size the class size results in a very low ratio of adults to students on campus at our site there just aren't enough adults to care for and supervise all our
students we try our best we do our best but it's very hard it becomes a safety issue as well as an educational issue so think of that safety is very important I know it's very important to the district you need to get more teachers and more adults on campus and you have to pay them because you need adults to guide these kids no matter what age they are it's so important now the other thing I want to say about class size if you don't have a small class size that begin to begin with and you have these large class sizes because you don't want to put in the money well you're going to end up paying for that later down the line because it will affect when kids don't get enough attention from their teacher
they don't get enough support they don't get the individual attention that they need and deserve then they pay for it you pay for it with a high graduation right a low graduation rate excuse me uh behavior problems intervention that you have to pay for so at some point it's it's not it's not going to work out for you because class size it's small the teachers can get there they can work they can do intervention early which all everyone says in education that's important so just to sum up um we do a lot of work stop making our job harder help us support us let's work together let's make education really much better in mdusd than it has been we can do this but we got to work together we're not your enemy we want to
work with you please trust us we're here for the kids and you know what without great teachers you don't have a school thank you thank you all right we've been allowing a little extra time because we have very few speakers tonight but that's not something we can normally afford to do all right uh Holly Pitts tolero stretch it up hi my name is Holly Pitts I work at both Olympic High School and home and hospital again I was not going to come here tonight I was just going to continue to email you and tweet to you but today I received that email that was sent to the entire mdusd Community um talking about the negotiations between Medi and the district so that brought me in this email makes me livid just livid it's an example
of the gaslighting and the lies the district continues to come up with thank you so I want to clear up just a few of the misconceptions okay Medea does not have a metoo clause if the district doesn't like that Clause they need to take it up with other bargaining units and stop using it as a threatening tool in negotiations okay the district has yet to show Medea that it cannot support the pay increase of 12.5 percent that we demand okay they say they cannot but the words don't mean anything they have to be able to show us and not just some Linguistics not just some rhetoric actually show us on paper where is all of the money going not payroll all of it so far we haven't seen it media remains competitive well I did
a simple little search of the surrounding districts just to see okay we're competitive I'm an eighth year teacher anywhere in any District around me right now I can make four thousand to ten thousand dollars more does that sound competitive to you it doesn't to me that's not competitive so if running a school district like a business is the model which seems to be the universal model then you have a failing business model if you have a failing business in general we are not here for profit we're here to serve our community teachers and counselors cannot do their job if they cannot support themselves it's really simple it's just that simple we know our worth like she said don't be fooled by our numbers we know our worth it's time you learned it or we will
show it to you thank you for your time thank you very much that concludes public comment item 9.1 District organizations did we have any speakers tonight or District organizations okay all right that takes us to 10.0 recognitions and resolutions 10.1 review and potential approval of resolution 2122-31 regarding accounting of Developmental fees for the 2020-2021 fiscal year in the capital facilities fund Dr Clark I'm going to call Dr Gonzalez up for this item I'm happy to answer any questions that the board has uh this is the one year so this is the annual fund 25 accounting for developer fees uh what we're actually doing at the next board meeting is we're bringing back the five-year at that point in time and then these will coincide in the future but what we're required to do is we're
required to have a resolution to approve the spending every year and what we really do plan on doing is starting to spend that down with the completion of the facilities master plan that we are really hoping we can bring to you in December thank you very much trustees any questions or motion I would make a motion to approve resolution 21-22-31 regarding accounting of Developmental fees for the 20 2021 School fiscal year in the Capitol facilities fund government code section 66001-d and 66006b second thank you motion by trustee Mason second by trustee Mayo any further discussion we'll take it to a vote trustee Fowler yes yes thank you the rest of us are voting electronically motion passes 5-0 with concurrence board member thank you next we have 10.2 review and potential approval of board resolution 2122-36
for personnel with variable term waivers Ary I was going to take this item and the next item good evening board members um the variable term over gives our employees additional time to complete their requirements and we're presenting you tonight with two employees for your consideration for this type of approval thank you do we have a motion Madam president I move that the board approved the variable term waiver which is a resolution 21-22-36 thank you motion by trustee Mayo second by trustee Mason any further discussion thank you thank you we'll take it to a vote trustee Fowler yes and the rest of us are electronic motion passes 5-0 with concurrence from our student board member item 10.3 Dr scudero is going to take this item review and potential approval of resolution 2122-38 revision to board meeting
dates oh okay that's all right the next item yeah so I have this so what we are what we are looking at is um is whereas the governing board of the Mount Diablo Unified School District has approved resolution 20 21-36 here wherein the state may November and December only one meeting will be held and whereas resolution 21 22-36 which further re was further revised with resolution 20 21-63 here appended to add a new meeting um and this new meeting was at the time was on was that May 26 um however what we're proposing is that we had an additional meeting on December 14th okay thank you do we have a motion on this item I'll note that the board approved resolution 21-22-38 revision to board meeting dates a second thank you motion by trustee McFerrin
second by trustee and zawi any further discussion everyone's looking forward to adding an additional date to our workload very nice uh okay we'll take it to a vote trustee Fowler yes all right and motion passes 5-0 with concurrence from our student board member and thank you trustee Fowler for your willingness to add one more meeting to your busy schedule okay that takes us to our Public Employee appointments 11.1 review and potential approval of personnel appointment principal Meadow homes Elementary School yes and that was this is Dan uh Dr Dr scadero will do this item thank you uh we would like to bring for your the board's review and potential approval the appointment of Catherine zidro for the position of principal at Meadow homes Elementary School during our 27-year career in education Katie has taught students
in grades K-8 and served as an instructional coach in the elementary school vice principal sharing their bachelor's degree in social work from CSU Sacramento and her master's degree in educational leadership from Cal State East Bay Katie enjoys spending time at home with her husband and two precious Senior Dogs she looks forward to trips to visit her adult son in Oregon during school breaks all right thank you very much do we have a motion Madam president I move that the board approved the appointment of Catherine Isidro as principal to be assigned to Meadow homes Elementary School a second motion by trustee Mayo second by trustee in Zoe any further discussion I just want to say thank God like um Meadow homes has been without a principle of all school year long and their tight-knit community that
does sorry that deserves to have strong leadership um and that Gap has been painful so I'm just so excited that this week they get to have somebody sitting in that office um so I look forward to getting to know principal essential definitely very exciting all right we'll take that to a vote trustee Fowler yes okay motion passes five zero with concurrence from our student board member congratulations [Applause] your permission uh can as easy to come up and introduce you yes please please we're excited to meet you oh government board president vice president trustees Dr Clark distinguished community members District staff it is a privilege to be welcomed to mount Avila Unified School District particularly as the new principal of meadow homes Elementary I'm grateful for the trust that you're placing in me I will always
do my best to promote the site Vision at Meadow homes of an education that prepares inspires and motivates our students to reach their full potential and to the medical homes Community teachers staff families and students I am so excited to meet you and to work together for Student Success really looking forward to a brilliant Journey thank you thank you so much very exciting okay all right uh and there are no items under 12.0 reports so that moves us to board member reports 13.0 all right who would like to go first trusty and zabard mine is brief um I know that I'm going to leave a bar I attended a bar I'm going to leave a bar to my colleagues who also attended um I want to thank um Dr Francis for allowing me to attend
a black parent meeting at Riverview middle school this week um that was really inspiring and motivating and just like the meetings that preceded um that were district-wide for black parents and looking ahead to the future of the African-American shoot um parent advisory sorry can we get the next word parent advisory committee is coming I think it will just be such a value add to our community and to our schools and provide excellent opportunities of learning um but where I want to focus my words today is to trustee Fowler is that I just um at the last meeting you described the the leadership of you as president of BSU at College Park and um your fellow members of really uh of doing something that I feel like you really didn't shouldn't have had to do and
that was to speak up to your English teachers um about the use of the inward in literature and in your classrooms and how that makes you feel and you inspired me and made me feel just so proud yet so hurt proud that like you all stood up you stood your ground to these to some teachers who had no understanding at first and you were able to show them the way and exact change but um I feel really sad and mad that you were put in a position to do that and that the adults around you have failed in this this isn't your job um so I just I brought you a cupcake that he's offering but I just want to say thank you because also that leadership inspires me that our future is going to
be all right like the in the hands of babies I know you're about to be grown but in the hands of babies great things um are to come and so I feel honored to serve with you but just feel really honored that you took that leadership I will point out that this issue we know isn't unique to College Park and I know other students have have brought it up in other settings and and same thing you should not have to do this we have to do better but thank you for doing it all right thank you trustee and Theory does Steve mcquerry all right um so last Tuesday I attended the CAC meeting um it was an in-person meeting um which seemed to bring in some new people um and on the other hand there
were some folks that I'm used to seeing in the zoom meetings that weren't able to attend um so there was a pretty good discussion kind of around how to make these meetings um accessible um so I look forward to seeing how we can work together um to that end um I appreciated the speaker series um James woven who we heard from um here last month about the Hope program spoke about mindset um and it was a topic that really resonated with our group there were lots of interesting questions and comments on this topic um I attended the abar meeting a couple weeks ago um and we had really good discussions around um around a lot of different topics I was in the breakout room I'm on curriculum um and we did discuss um kind of
how we're we're addressing um slurs in literature and I've been engaging with community members around this um and kind of talking about how we um take on this topic in the district where I teach um and so um anyone that would like to speak with me I would hope that you would reach out to me about this or anything else um I would like everyone to know that the next abar meeting is next Monday from 5 to 6 30 on Zoom these meetings are open to anyone who would like to attend um and then yesterday and today um I got a substitute for the first time in a very long time a year and some change um and I went to uh the grading for Equity uh training kickoff um and so Joe Feldman who
um wrote this book facilitated um the PD and um aohsd offered the training to teachers um and while I can't really capture everything about the pedagogy involved in the book or during my training um it focuses on um grading that um is accurate bias resistant and motivational um some practices that are related um are establishing a minimum grading policy and using a four-point scale rather than a traditional percentage scale um I'm very much looking forward to overhauling some of my own grading practices and speaking with anyone in mdusd that would like to speak about grading for Equity um and um any efforts to make our grading more fair um and then uh on Friday night I attended the varsity football game at Concord High School and took my husband with me and we watched the
the Red Devils come out ahead just in the very last part of the game which is really fun um I do want to say that I was really impressed um by our cheerleading teams there was it was wonderful to see um Concord High recently hosted um an event for um young um young students to come out and work with the cheer team um and um it was a very well-run event everything seemed really smooth um and so I had a really good time um I mentioned it before but I have this coming Friday off and so I am it's gonna be a day on for me I'm really looking forward to doing some School site visits um and so I've been setting those up and I look forward to reporting out about that experience at
our next meeting wonderful thank you trustee McLaren trustee Mason I attended the abar meeting and the student meeting led by our own trustee Fowler and also the mayor's meeting with Dr Clark all of them had very good conversations and all of them were um with folks that want to make our district a better place to be so I appreciated that thank you trustee Mayo um first I would like to mention that I did attend the CAC meeting Mrs McFerrin gave an excellent report and represented the board very well her comments are always very well received um then I attended the Mount Diablo business education Alliance meeting as many of you did that was held this Monday and I participated in the Engineering subcommittee Group I appreciate the work that's uh being explored there and the
individuals involved in that subgroup are planning additional meetings so there might be an um a project for the students in the spring which will I think be very exciting especially because it involves the engineering involves the stem Fields then on October 29th I was able to go to Cal State East Bay Concord campus to honor CSUB Public Health mentors that were placed throughout Contra Costa County as part of the together towards help Grant there was a grant that was received with the university and a couple of other agencies to place graduating students as mentors in our high schools or in non-profit organizations so they can gain experience regarding work in the medical field and also be the what the beacon and the inspiration for young people to become involved in Medical Careers because as we
know there will be an increased demand for employees in the medical professional in the medical field regardless of what area you choose to go into and so there were two students that were placed uh these are college students that were placed at Ignacio Valley High School Shannon Carr and Mount Diablo High School Haley Davis and so they were there this fall and did an excellent job and the Mrs April trees was the one that sponsored these individual students or these students and um it looks like there will be an additional 20 that will be placed in high schools throughout Contra Costa County in the spring so this grant has really blossomed in providing this experience not only for the college students but also giving a role model for young people to look up with because
they work with the students on its particular projects so it was exciting to attend this event and hear the stories and the experiences of all the students whether they were placed in a high school or in a non-profit organization or in a senior care facility for example so that's my report thank you wonderful I have one other thing I apologize I want to take a moment to thank Veterans for their service um there have been over 10 family members in my family and my husband's family who have served in various combats um and our veterans and no matter what the venue of service was there are always scars that are not visible and stories that have never been shared so on behalf of I hope all of the board we want to thank our veterans
who have provided service to our country thank you very much trustee Mayo trusty Fallon uh thank you to my fellow trustee who highlighted what I did um and honestly it was my honor to do that and I felt like the black student union at College Park was a great place to start and how I'm also meeting with other black student unions amongst the district to help them with this issue as well and I feel like when it comes from the students perspective and the students voices it's a much more heard opposed to if it was coming from a a teacher or a principal instead I feel like the students voices are very impactful and that's just one example of it following up with that I did have a meeting with the high school principals regarding
the black student union meeting at College Park and the issues amongst literature how the n-words being said aloud when reading how there's not um enough diverse curriculum and how there's no teaching the significance of the word when it comes up during classroom so it comes up during classroom during a school in middle school and it's not really addressed and one thing that a student highlighted in the blacks union meeting was that she felt as if she was very sheltered because she didn't really know what the word meant she just obviously when you're told oh don't say this you want to say it so I think teaching the significance of the word is very crucial to understanding the emotional impact it has on students um I also had the first student advisory committee meeting where um
Charisse and Deborah attended which was amazing several high schools and middle schoolers were there they attended and we had some icebreakers discuss what topics we're going to work on this year we also talked about how why is Sac important to the district why it's been official following that um in the California Student board member Association that I'm in one of my goals is making sure that every District every student board member in the association does have a student advisory committee so I shared the bylaws with them that Michelle created last year and I'm also working with one of the members to maybe create a template and we're kind of combining both of our districts bylaws together which is very cool I also attended the state seal of Civic engagement meeting last Saturday with Miss Johnson
and Michelle lost the fellow the trustee of last year actually attended as well so it was great hearing her background around the award and as well as how I spoke on how I've been doing Civic engagement as well and how accessible it is because a lot of people are doing Civic engagement just don't know it and lastly I'm very excited for Dr Clark to be coming to the black student meeting on Friday last week we there was an incident at College Park uh where many students not attend school because the water was off um due to Mayhem but a driving accident so I'm very happy for him to be attending on Friday thank you very much trustee Fowler and thank you for inviting us to your SAC meeting it was really incredible to see your
leadership and to be able to hear from students from across the district about what their uh what their needs are and what the issues are that they're seeing and I look forward to more of that so thank you all right um so as for me um I did uh also get to attend some of the other things that people mentioned already I also did on October 29th attend the Unified sports match match at Concord High um which included um yv high school and acolanes and I was so impressed to see how Concord High has incorporated this into their schedule with an inclusive PE class option and so I would love to see how all all our high schools could become Unified Schools like this there was there was a representative from Special Olympics there who's
happy to support um and on the Special Olympics website you can you can look up Unified Schools and find a lot of resources and information on this uh later that day I got my vaccine booster and flu shot at the same time it was great so I feel I feel good um but um I definitely needed a day to recover so I recommend that for those who are doing that um on October on November 2nd the Walnut Creek city council voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products and electronic smoking devices so Vapes um I spoke I attended the meeting and spoke in favor of it reminding them that our school board unanimously passed a resolution in January of 2020 that requested that cities do exactly that um and we were requesting that they
enact a vape ban similar to the one that Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors had passed in December of 2019. um so it was pretty exciting to see a student from Foothill Middle School spoke in favor of the ban um along with community members and also the heart and lung associations um and it passed uh unanimously and the city will start enforcing the ordinance in five months so it's really exciting to see that happen and I'm hoping to see the rest of our cities in our school district now follow suit because it's really only together that we can really be successful in keeping these dangerous products from being marketed to our youth on November 3rd um Senator Glazer held a meeting with school board presidents uh in his area um that I attended and it
was good to hear that he's championing a Statewide School construction Bond um so we'll definitely be supportive of that we all need help in that in our with our aging infrastructure um we also discussed with him the fiscal cliff of declining enrollment that so many of our districts are facing and how we really need one more year of hold harmless on enrollment um to uh to stabilize our funding and help us weather the uncertainties of this next year on November 8th um Dr Clark and I visited with one of our nurses and lvns to better understand what they do and what challenges they're facing at school sites um so really appreciate them taking the time to do that um and and then I attended the mdbea meeting as well and the Building Trades breakout session
really appreciated all of their participation and mentoring of our students lastly I'm thrilled to share this resource that I heard about at my College reunion recently um where Saul Khan came to speak um and it's called yeah icon Academy okay so it's called schoolhouse.world and it's a platform for free peer-to-peer tutoring where anyone anywhere in the world can receive Live help build their skills and also even pay it forward by becoming a tutor themselves yeah and it's live um so it was created by salcon of Khan Academy and his college friend shashir mahotra co-founder and CEO of Coda so their mission is to connect hundreds of thousands of Learners worldwide with safe Equitable opportunities to learn teach and grow and this week they are actually adding a feature that's called Live help every weekday evening
from 5 to 7 PM Pacific Standard time and it is um help you can just bring your questions and you can join tutors over Zoom for one-to-one help in math anything from pre-algebra to calculus so if anyone tries it out let me know how it goes so I'd love to hear and I also think that tutoring if you become a tutor on there then it can count for your community service hours for so for those of you students who need community service hours take a look schoolhouse.world yeah all right we all need help with Matt um or to share our skills with others for those of us who love math okay all right so that is it for board reports thank you very much and it will go on next to superintendent's report 14.1 Dr
Clark thank you very much president I do have a presentation let's see if there's a clicker all right very excited to uh present to you all tonight so first of all just want to again um review our lcap goals at all students all students all students I I love just that opening just every single student will receive a high quality education and a safe and welcoming environment with Equitable high expectations access to technology and instruction in the California state standards that prepare them for College and Career you know also participated yesterday on the um on on the call with our different labor partners and the different Community businesses and just again I uh I emailed Dr fonella afterwards and just told her just how impressed I always am with those meetings they're always full and
everyone always shows up to those and just really impressed with all the Community Partnerships that we have for our students so in goal two high quality culturally proficient and responsive staff will provide engaging instruction respectful of all students backgrounds to ensure they are College and Career ready and lastly making sure that parents family and Community will be informed engaged and empowered as partners with the Mount Diablo with Mount Diablo Unified to support student learning and in this presentation will be posted as it always is in our in our minutes or in our board summaries um I just wanted to um refer back to our to our triangle that was that we developed in collaboration with the um with ccee and again we're going to focus on learning acceleration we're going to focus on um on
on educational Equity making sure that all students have what what they need and we're going to focus on social emotional learning so again I just want to go back and and um and and just highlight because we did have our quarterly meeting with the California um um with CCE and um and again CCE was contracted to come and work with us because of our poor performance of our African-American students our homeless students and our foster youth students and because these groups had not made significant progress over the past three years um so again they came and worked with us reviewed all of our systems visited classrooms teachers principals Community groups and they came up with several of these recommendations and so this is really leading into a lot of the work that we're doing but
um we had to share um what we've done to craft and share an instructional plan or framework aligning all plans and initiatives and so we we started that work and I shared with with this board at the last meeting um how we're assessing our progress in those areas and also develop a shared vision of student achievement And to clarify roles and expectations for attaining this Vision so again what are all of our students going to be able to do um you know as they go through our programs and we're going to continue to monitor how our African-American Foster Youth and and homeless students are doing and then also um they recommended that we build on the ongoing work of our of the equity Department to to deepen the understanding of explicit and implicit bias And
to clarify innovate and scale the work of of our principal Equity cohorts to include all principals and school sites I did meet with all principals last week just to um to again to to talk about what's going on at their schools and what type of you know what type of things they're working with with their particular staffs and and how things are progressing and that the expectation is that I will get reports from then that I can come back and share with this board and we can also share with CCE and our other partners on on how we are working and then also set the expectation that work to achieve equity and inclusion will be shared by all district and and school leaders and all teachers and I did meet with the leaders of Medea
who who represent the teachers and they are also committed to this and they have pledged to work partnership with the um with with site administrators and district office Personnel on this on this recommendation so so very happy to see that I also just want to share in in public and in this meeting my superintendent goals which are tied to many of the initiatives that we are that we are currently following so um so the first number one goal is the budget goal to maintain long-term and short-term solvency and financial stability and we have what that will be evidenced by there we have three bullets there that that shows how how I will provide that evidence to to this board [Music] um we also see there's a teaching and learning goal so focus on improving the
following lcap measures of student achievement evidenced by interim board study sessions featuring quarterly data district-wide which I which I shared at the um at uh the last meeting by school and so you'll get reports on how every student did and then again for the purposes of this report we'll pull out information on our African-American homeless and Foster youth students and um and also how how our specific District Investments around our CSI schools lcfs supplemental and Etc and then strategies at district and school level um so that we can address um successes and and challenges right and making sure that we're always collecting input from specific student group families School climate um there's a goal here so create systems that improve the school climate by Improvement in meaningful participation as defined in student surveys so again
we survey different groups of our students every year and we want to make sure and measure that our students are feeling that um that they are participating in in the educational programs and that there are adults there on campus who will advocate for them um transparent clear and straight straightforward suspension data shared with stakeholders so I've shared our last two months of suspensions with this board and and also with our principals and again my reports are are published on our website and then establish a comprehensive professional development plan focused on social emotional learning and equity and we will approve that throughout the year also we have a human resource goal align Staffing to student needs evidenced by completion of of current bargaining contracts increase Recruitment and and retention of bipoc and multilingual teachers and staff
and employee satisfaction that HR is is more responsive to employee needs so um so again these are these are the superintendent's goals and sharing them in public and they will be posted on my webpage on the on the district website um we're very excited about about the opportunity to partner with um with uh Contra Costa County Health with Kaiser with John Muir and with La Clinica and um and they approached us and they wanted to open up vaccination clinics on several of our school sites and so we're working on doing that at five of our sites so far we have three identified in Bay Point and we have two identified in Concord and those will be coming very very soon the county also did a town hall on vaccinations for children just making sure that
parents can have a have a form where they can ask questions where they can get factual information where they can hear about um you know the the um you know the benefits and again the the challenges and the opportunities for their children to be vaccinated and so they they held one town hall last week and because of high demand they they've scheduled three more and so hopefully anyone who has questions concerns or is on the fence here that they can go there and and and get further information so we're we're looking forward to that foreign again just just more examples of social emotional learning at work and um this is a social emotional lesson at Hidden Valley Elementary School and again the kids meet every morning to discuss how they're feeling what their hopes are
for the day and how they can be good friends to to one another so that's Hidden Valley El Monte El Monte here is is a Blog I pulled off of Twitter that they posted and so SEL every day El Monte Bulldogs uh grade five teacher so this is a fifth grade class Miss Kennedy starts each day with the morning meeting where students share thoughts feelings and discuss how they can be an ally by supporting peers who are having a tough time or celebrating students experiencing success so again just a way to make our our students you know feel good about themselves be good friends be good peers and and this is that in action and teachers reading the story today entire class Oak Grove Middle School Miss Del Rio students are learning about responsible decision
making and what tools they should fill their backpacks with from pins and planners to mindfulness and kindness are tools for Success are unlimited so just just always so so pleased to see this in action here's another one this is these are 8th graders are dissecting cow eyes today building on what they learned last year in seventh grade science and you may not think this is social emotional learning but this is a group project it is not an individual project and as you know when you have to do things in a group it takes teamwork it takes sacrifice it takes making exceptions it takes leading and following all of those things and so I think this is a great way that they've demonstrated a science lesson and how it can incorporate those social emotional learning tools
that we like to instill in our students and then here's SEL over at Olympic Alliance uh these students they brought their bikes in for repair and ending up trading them in for an upgrade add some accessories and Bam check out Ollie Bike Shop Thursdays from 10 to 4. thank you Smitty and and bike Concord for always serving our students and our community so again this is just another example of of Community Partnerships with our schools and our students here benefit so um so that concludes my report if there are if there are any questions I'd be I'd be happy to to answer any questions from the board thank you so much Dr Clark and yes that bike shop is incredible it's also a good place to donate your bikes if you have kids who have
