001foreign our trustee for the evening is Claire McGinnis cheers and she's from Northgate High School correct and you are welcome to join in any conversations ask any questions just don't get to vote yet and um I know it'll probably be hard to pull yourself away but when you need to leave you can leave okay after you get your report and with that I'm going to ask you all the Christianity and join me quickly in America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with the liberty and justice for all right I poured out on our closed session 7.1 anticipated litigation was conference with legal counsel for some of the government code section 549-56.9 two cases on one of those we gave staff the authority to pursue a settlement and the
002other one received information on 7.10 possible discipline dismissal release or reassignment of Public Employee under government code such as 549-57b1 we approved procedure of dismissal process and on another received information and on 7.3 negotiations the board received an update and information on our current negotiations was our closed session this is the time for public comment the public May address the board regarding any item within the jurisdiction of the board of education for the Mount Diablo School District that is not on this agenda these presentations are limited to three minutes each or a total of 30 minutes for all speakers or the three-minute limit may be shortened if there are any or there are multiple speakers on any one subject the public comment period may be moved to the end of the meeting time we operate
003under the brown act so we will not be having conversations back and forth during public comment but we will do one of three things we will refer your item to a staff member to a future meeting or possibly ask a clarifying question having said that we have the kind of special public comment tonight that we're going to start with Jonathan Faye good evening thank you for uh indulging me uh I am the newly named principal for money guards Elementary this year and I wanted to share with you at the end of September um well first I shared that we have an amazing staff all across the district I mean I want to recognize that that our step that our staff and our teachers our classified employees are an amazing group of people to work with
004and especially soda money Gardens and so at the end of September we had a little bit of a crisis in our lunchroom and a young lady started choking on on the food that she was eating at lunch and so students reacted and acted to gain the attention of our of our lunch duty staff our campus supervisors that work in the cafeteria and one staff member Maria vangelin who was was notified she came over noticed that this young lady was in crisis and immediately and very calmly checked to make sure she was okay she noticed she wasn't the coloration of her skin was purple she immediately got her up and performed the abdominal breast was able to expel the piece of food that was choking her uh and made sure she was okay took her to
005the nurse's office and then she was actually okay enough that she was able the girl the young lady was able to continue classes for the rest of her class for the rest of the day so um I I I've shared this story because I know that they happen all across the district but it happened in my school that we have somebody who who took action she doesn't think of herself as extraordinary uh she's very humble but I have to say that it sometimes our our what who are sometimes our ordinary people that do extraordinary things and especially for this young lady was something that was life at saving and so uh I I want to uh to publicly thank Maria bangalan who is one of our campus supervisors and works in the lunchroom along with
006Tony kyocian uh and uh I think she's joined here by uh two of her daughters as well as our um our our food services manager Dolores Brockett is also here as well to help celebrate that with her so uh just an appreciation of her and her action we want to just uh say Well done foreign members I'd like to thank you for this recognition and I'd love to thank our beautiful um Mr Faye and my co-worker especially Lisa Tony chaos and hope is been beside me all the time so these things happen all the time we have near misses but we are all ready it's because of the skill that we are trained for and we think the um the board members and the district for that certificate that says the board is honored to
007bestow on you this 2018 Award of Excellence for heroism to the employee Maria McGowan about money Gardens So yeah thank you so much foreign [Applause] okay next public comment Alina Wong um I'm going to be addressing BP ar5126 and I have copies of a PowerPoint to their teachers that sounds funny um so I'm addressing BPA of 5126 which is the voice of achievement for the district and they include the Golden State uh CL Merit diploma and the bilateral CCO award they were last modified in December of 2011. um previously qualifying for the Golden State Steel merit award with the California standardized test however since those are no longer used and we use Smarter Balance they no longer apply to Golden State Seal eligibility approximately 2 263 students across the district were in the class of
0082018 and were unable to qualify for the Golden State Seal mayor of diploma due to the district not having updated the standards uh according to the California District of Education um over 100 000 students qualified Statewide for this field um in February of 2018 uh procedure letter was issued by the California Department of Education to all high school and unified school districts regarding changes and this was signed by the uh by Michelle center of the California education um per this letter um uh California code uh Education Code uh sections 5150 to 55 um state that local educational agencies uh confer High School diplomas which oh how to maintain appropriate records to and in order to annually identify graduating seniors who have earned this Co and to fix the seals under their diploma um I propose
009uh we uh to look looking over these uh AR 515216 and um changing it to reflect the common standards so that seniors in the mdusd district are able to um claim the Golden State Seal award and um on following Pages uh include the current standards which can be changed in um the AR 515216 okay well thank you this is definitely something staff will be looking at and possibly be on a future agenda so thank you very much next up we have Michael Schneider hi I'm Michael Schneider I'm working with the city of Concord and getting crossing guards re-established for the city of Concord give me an update as of October 9th the city of Concord did adopt International walk to school similar to this Council the night before bringing to uh to uh to the
010public an awareness of the importance of walking to school and safety for our children um at that same meaning uh councilwoman Carolyn copinger went ahead and made a motion to have this forwarded and it is being now going to be put in part um a committee starting on November 19 2018 to discuss how to create that firm framework for crossing guards and better signage and for um the overall safety program that would be adopted for the public about 14 Schools participated in the walk to school with a few council members also visiting the schools on October 10th um we do have a reevaluation to happen on traffic flows and safety for Ygnacio Valley Elementary scheduled um once the transportation consultant returns from vacation later in November and due to my Facebook page um quite a
011bit of uh post and Outreach through my email that Holbrook School specifically also the Pine Hollow Road out in by Highlands and a couple of intersections San Simeon intrigued which I believe Services Woodside and Oak Grove Road to be going ahead and also being considered for reassessment of traffic assessments uh safety signage so that our kids have a more safer route to and from school so that's all for the next 30 days thank you very much thank you for the update okay we have one more public speaker and because of comments that have been made to me after other meetings I'm going to give a warning that this person will probably be talking about things that are very sexually explicit and just as we have with our programs giving people the opportunity to opt out
012I'm going to give anybody that for the next three minutes would like to leave the room because they're uncomfortable with the language to do so at this time and the next speaker would be Denise Persia no I have something for you in advance of my public comment copy review cheeky with you for you and you and even you dear sir before I get started I want to remind you the definition of age appropriate defined in the logs the healthy youth act in ab329 which defined in education code 51931 age appropriate refers to topics messages and teaching methods suitable to particular ages or age groups of Children and adolescents we're not talking about teens based on developing cognitive emotional and behavioral capacity typical for age or age group last mdusc board meeting you all voted on
013the yearly resolution known as fan book week slated for the last week in September I'm going to read just a small part of the resolution quoting whereas some individuals groups and public authorities work to remove or limit access to reading material materials to censor content in schools to label controversial views or distribute lists of exceptional books or authors and to purge libraries of materials reflecting the diversity of society America still favors a free enterprise in ideas and expression and can be trusted to exercise critical judgment propaganda and misinformation and to make their own decisions about what they believe and what they read I ask you to think about this book that I just gave you and to take a look through it I want you to really spend some time looking at the pictures and
014the content like masturbation an entire chapter an entire chapter on abortion slated for 10 year olds and up mentions anal and oral sex it's a book most frequently banned every year it's on usually the top ten it is marked for age 10 and up I'm not asking you to ban any book I'm asking you to use age appropriate definition to determine whether this book should be on a handout given to our children who are 10 years old and that handout a copy of it is for you also in the book this book was banned from a California prison a Men's prison by the way an adult prison because it was considered pornographic you know cartoon characters engaged in various sexual acts are not meant for 10 year olds if they are not meant for a
015prison population who is adults you said you wanted to challenge trustee Lawrence and I would suggest this challenge to you and to this board and to you superintendent Meyer a challenge that would say why is this book on a handout given to our children during family life and what purpose would it serve again the healthy youth act in ab20 ab329 to find age appropriate as suitable for typical age groups or age groups of Children and adolescents based on developing cognitive emotional and behavioral capacity these words are known by Educators they should be known by this board the meaning of those have meaning and they in fact inform instructions all right well I'll be back again thank you okay next we have recognitions and resolutions and we have the Native American Heritage Month resolution November has
016been designated as Native American heritage month and now Diablo Unified School District also recognizes the contributions made by Native Americans to view economic political and Social Development of California and the nation and in precedent I would move that the board approved the Native American and Heritage Month resolution 18-19-24 thank you okay we have passes by zero zero appointments appointment of Elementary vice principal Hidden Valley Elementary Dr Meyer yes thank you president Mason Board of Education I would like to recommend for the position of Elementary vice principal Hidden Valley Ronald Roberts Ronald comes to us with a bachelor's of science from Montana State University in health and human development he also has a masters of education from Brandman University in educational leadership and administration he holds an administrative Services credential a single subject credential in mathematics

024stations and activities to help de-stress and Leadership is working on good works and acts of kindness such as a self-sustaining kindness wall and a compliment tag with finals quickly approaching it is sure to be effective and we are currently working on our parents night out on December 14th with our feeder School One Acres this fundraiser will involve support advice and ideas with from the Walnut Acres student council and this will event will provide cheap baby a cheap babysitting service to in the Walnut Acres and you are so that parents can run errands go on a date night or go holiday shopping and then campus cleanup was October 12th so two weeks ago and the whole school Community came together with race and wheelbarrows all to help with sprucing and maintenance projects which included painting weeding
025and spreading mulch all in our student drop-off section and the campus somehow manages to look beautiful every time we do it thank you um good evening president Mason members of the board superintendent Dr Meyer superintendence Council and members of the audience my name is Hannah genevan and I am the ASB president from Concord High School um recently our leadership class participated in the yours humanly walk which I saw a few of you there and um we are super excited to do community service events like this this will be the first of many and we had about 40 volunteers that we gave them so we were just excited to help out and we got there to get like 6 a.m so we really pushed through that day um just a little bit about the new committees
026that we've just started we've finished our homecoming um all the homecoming stuff that we had so we started the Committees and the first one is the happiness Campaign which is a project that our school has been doing for a while now and we ask students to write down their holiday wish and then from December 3rd to the 18th we try to Grant as many of them as possible within our budgets and then the restraints that our school set for us um obviously can't give them so kids have asked for that actually and in the past we brought students their Starbucks orders lunch from their favorite restaurant um stuffed animals that they say they wanted it well no we bring in like a stuff llama because and then school supplies candy and then any gifts that
027they wished for um we try to do as many as possible but in the past we've done bigger wishes such as um having our leadership class perform like a High School Musical flash mob in the quad that was a big hit we made it snow one year we bought snow machines and we made it snow in the quad and then one of our teachers who plays the piano he played during lunch um the entire lunch during the corporate in the corn um yeah and then we're trying to focus on giving back and making it um event more about giving to other people than receiving so there's also a slot on the paper that you can write a gift that you want somebody else to be granted so like if somebody's having a rough day I
028can say like oh I want them to get their favorite Starbucks drink or something just to cheer them up so that's what we're focusing on another committee that we have um is the holiday project committee um it's a program where we go to Local Elementary after school programs and we put on a holiday party for them these kids may not get the same experience at home so we just wanted to make a really fun-filled day we have the kids decorate cookies color and give them maybe put face paint on them and then they meet Mr and Mr Mr and Mrs Claus if they want to and they also enjoy Pizza this year we're trying to get close to 10 schools and we've been seven in the past and um we're spreading this out over the
029course from November 26 to December 14th so we're starting a little bit earlier this year just so we can reach enough schools um because finals week is quickly approaching we wanted to give the two weeks before um tutoring study hours in this event we call cocoon cramming and from December 3rd to the 14th um we have teachers volunteer their classrooms and their time and they get to study with peers and just enjoy some hot chocolate and treats while they get ready for finals and this is like I said the two weeks before finals but the students will sign in and the teachers are participating and we'll give their students extra credit so it's a little bit abused with helping with their tests and their grades um we also have something called the winter bench which
030is an event we put on in the winter and the springtime so it's called the spring brunch and it's for our special ed peers we invite them and their teachers to join us for our holiday theme to French and where they get to wear their pajamas eat breakfast with each other like our leadership class two week be with them and we watch a movie and we get to know each other it's one of our favorite events that we do and um we're making it a little bit more exciting we're moving it to the small gym which is bigger than our leadership classroom and um we're just gonna we're gonna get to expand we're gonna do activities um like we're gonna bunch of bunch of activities there and we're just gonna have it a little bit
031more area so we can do more and if you guys want to stop by it's um uh November 27th from 8 30 to 10 so if you guys want to come by and meet everybody you can you're all welcome and then okay moving on just dodgeball so um for the last week so we have a dodgeball tournament that we do every year and it's the two weeks um last weekend this week and they get to um so we have 10 teams battling it out to see who's the best in their bracket and we actually have a game on Friday so whoever wins overall the overall the 10 teams get to play the Marines we have our OTC card um connection at our school ROTC connection and one of our um coordinators one of the Marines
032says I volunteered himself and a few other sergeants to play our students students should you should be pretty interesting let's say she'd be afraid I know there's some freshman teams too so it's like kind of concerning um on to sports or football has had a bit of a rough season they're um they're currently three and six but we are hoping to improve at this um this Friday at Mount Diablo and to support our stairway hunger program or activity that we're doing soon um we're actually reducing the ticket prices to three dollars for adults if they bring five cans of food and then for free if students bring five cans of food so we're hoping to like boost her attendance with that and also um contribution to the Discovery Hunter program so the sparrow hunger program
033in case you guys didn't know um it's a program that we do with our sports teams we have our leadership class participate as well and we go around on Halloween night collecting food so instead of trick-or-treating students can collect canned food for their local food bank so yeah we're looking forward to that that's coming up next week and our girls tennis team so onto Sports our girls tennis team has improved quite a bit this season and they played CV um the first time winning 16 matches but the second time they won 46 so that's quite a big Improvement and they're getting ready for their division tournament this Thursday Friday and Saturday against or at Alhambra and their two seniors that they have they're sad to finish off their sport but proud of the success their
034team has had this year on to cross country um we have our next meet this Wednesday at New Hall Park so it's pretty close it's like a home meet and our star runner Renaissance was featured in the sports Star Magazine I'm recognizing her for her accomplishments so yeah if you guys want to look up look into that our volleyball um has had a successful season they raised a little more than six thousand dollars with the new platform called Snap raise um nobody it's similar to each team sponsors if you guys have heard of that but um we're hoping to expand that with our leadership class as well using the same platform because they were quite successful with it and they um recently had their senior night with their eight seniors um this past Thursday our
035music program attended the Santa Cruz Band review this weekend and took fourth place in auxiliary fourth place in percussion third in band and second in Drive major some other school events that we've had recently is our Career Education Fair on October 4th I'm on 60 career um three years or like Staples booths were there to educate our students about opportunities they have to pursue um possible careers students were given a bunch of information and resources to figure out their next step whether it be a college or a college a trade or anything else and then we also had our cash for college um night on October 11th and it was a process it was to make in order to make the process have a fine for financial aid and scholarships a little less of a
036headache VHS hosted a parent student Workshop I hope families get ready um get set up for the college cash for college dream app and FAFSA accounts for FAFSA accounts um so it's a little bit less of a process so you can check it off their to-do list um yeah thank you so much and good morning foreign [Applause] good evening president Mason board member superintendent Dr Meyer members of superintendents council members of the audience my name is Natalia Soto and I am the student representative for college math program uh September 27th we had Sylvia Mendes attend our school and she is it was part of a social justice event and she put out there the Mendes versus Westminster Court case that um let's Latinos be in the same school as white people uh this court case
037was in 1947 it was the first case to hold that school segregation itself is unconstitutional and violates the 14th Amendment um her father won the court case and ever since her mother passed away she her mom told her to pass on what her dad had them for them uh October 12th College and Career resource thing uh we invited College and Career advisors within the mdusd district gave students College information and talked about financial aid uh Dr Molina Abdullah attended our school October 15th and she is the intellectual arm of the Revolution black Freedom struggle and 50 years of the black studies uh she is also part of the black lives matter in LA October 17th uh fam there was a family committee from 6 to 6 30 which uh was a meeting for planning future
038CN events from 6 30 to 8 there was a parent advisory meeting that discussed discussed graduation as well as College requirements and financial aid information for parents and students October 19th senior there was a senior presentation uh for the econ class and we presented to people of the community talking about uh it was a protected project talking about uh what restaurants we would put in our school and why we would put them uh keeping in mind health and money how much those restaurants are bringing in which was pretty fun um seniors are also getting ready to register and apply to colleges csu's uc's private colleges University universities for next month also uh both our econ teacher and our English teacher have been pushing us to vote if we are eligible and if not to pre-register
039um also we have a canned food drive uh since we're two small classes we decided to do juniors and seniors together and we're collecting class to help the Contra Costa Community Food Bank partnered up with the pan-african Student Union which in the future are helping us to create senior events since the senior events that are held at our high schools are during while we're in school so we're not able to attend so they're making an effort to do some events for us and we have a big pen in both of our classes from October 15 to November 20th we have um what is called the Diablo Valley College support undocumented students and college now has supported this by giving this to us and we had to fill it out and say who would we send
040it to and how it is that we're supporting um we have a whole month of supporting undocumented students and our teachers are edging us and motivating us to attend these events to support undocumented students [Applause] um good evening um president Mason board members superintendent Dr Meyer members of superintendent attendance console and members of the audience my name is Diana Nunez and I am the ASV vice president for Mount Diablo High School so far at Mount Diablo it's been an eventful transition from first quarter to second quarter underclassmen are now in full back to school mode and seniors are stress are stressing about their looming and overwhelming college applications in other news first was Title One Night one of our most important nights of the year it turned out to be very successful with a great
041turnout from both seniors and their parents our leadership class has also been kept busy hosting and organizing activities for the schools such as last week where we had our bullet Drive this one was part was much better than our previous ones due to the fact that we actually had a handful amount of students who didn't get to donate because of the limited space and time we had last is Red Ribbon Week this week we're encouraging students to remain drunk and tobacco-free through a spirit week and lunchtime activities um the next week we will also be hosting um lunchtime lunchtime activities for Halloween spirit weeks to promote um school spirit and yeah um that's it for me thank you thank you [Applause] okay looks like that's all of our students report again so we'll go yeah
042can we leave now yes and now we'll get to our board member reports we'll start with Mr Lawrence is that right sure thank you um I will start with a public service announcement which is uh you may have heard that there is a lottery right now which is in excess of projected to be I think close to two billion dollars if you win don't forget your local school district [Music] um in general I I'm actually not a big fan of the lotteries I think it is actually a tax on the people who can at least afford it but one of the questions I've been receiving is measure J is going to be on the ballot is well our our school is getting money from the lottery and the the myth around that is that that's
043been a a source of lots of additional funds for the schools instead what would happen is that the money is that were supplementary to that have now been moved elsewhere and so no but along those same lines I would remind people today is the last day to register to vote here in the state of California and we have an election uh two weeks from now or two weeks from tomorrow and it would take you about the same amount of time to vote as it would to buy a lottery ticket and you have better odds of winning so I would encourage you to do that secondly uh I would say to uh this is Persia thank you for the gift I will put it out at my house and if my children are interested in looking
044at it they are welcome to do so um 20 years ago this month a young man named Matthew Shepard was in Wyoming and he was kidnapped portrait pistol pistol went and tied to a fence and left to die um the crime he had committed was he happened to be gay in a bar and someone found that out and that was the result uh that that is what happened to him and for me I recognized that we have students today who are even at a relatively young age have questions around their own sexuality and their gender identity in their place in the world and I believe that we as a school district have an obligation to provide information to those students that does not in any way mean that we have to debate a a world
045view to those students but I do believe that we should give them access to information to to understand and to feel supported and have resources and so I I will proudly say that I think this is the type of book that we should make available not every student has to have it I certainly respect a parent's decision to say that's not something I want my child to read but I believe that in free speech and in a free Society you need to continue to make things available to our children even if we don't necessarily agree with each and every one of them so that is my important report tonight for tonight thank you thank you um I would um our Concord High School student mentioned uh the yours humanly human humanly uh K5 run which
046benefited the Mount Diablo Education Foundation on October 6th and I would happy to share with you that there were 126 registered from Mount Diablo school district and the proceeds to the Mount Diablo Education Foundation exceeded a thousand two hundred dollars so not only did yours humanly benefit for their outstanding programs that they Implement not only internationally but within the United States but Mount Diablo schools have also benefited from that particular event on October 13th Mrs Mason joined me for the csba breakfast in Oakland and Dennis Myers the csba governmental relations representative reported on the latest action in Sacramento and the austere landscape for Education funding in the future on October 17th we had the CAC celebration of success at Concord High School Miss Hanson gave a warm welcome to the Full House and Concord High
047School as did Dr Meyer and Dr geely students were recognized which is always a lot of fun and the excitement and joy on those faces and those of their family friends and staff who are heartwarming and I in particular enjoy helping with the medals and want to thank Mrs Lambert and Mrs weisenberger for their work with the CAC and organizing the program we met with I've been meeting with teachers who have wanted to share different things with me as a board member one of them was a librarian regarding the status of school libraries and their workloads and the second group of teachers was the IB Program rollout for 2019 and 20. I look forward to having further information Meyer on those two topics the college fair at Ignacio Valley High School is tomorrow night at
0486 30 PM so I'm hoping i'll see a lot of you there and October 24th at 7 30 a.m and I'm doing a pitch for this as well there's a conversation with Nicole Hockley of the Sandy Hook promise program that's being held at the Pleasant Hill Community Center which is open to the public for the breakfast at 7 30 in the morning if you're interested it should be a very informative event on October 25th at 6 PM you're welcome to join many of us who will be meeting with the California state PTA president Diana McDonald at the Walnut Creek Intermediate School in Walnut Creek and there's a few free dinner associated with that so free breakfast one day free dinner the next day major J work continues I hope all of you are reading your
049ballots and making your decisions I've been walking our neighborhoods and I just want to remind our community once more and our residents to please close their doors and windows and garages don't leave Handbags and wallets near open windows or keys hanging in door knobs it is such it poses such a Temptation for people who would um might do ill will to someone in our neighborhoods so be please be thoughtful I know it just takes a moment you think you're in a dash inside and get something and you leave your car running and it just doesn't work I want to thank those that are receptive to and gracious to individuals who are walking door to door regardless of who they're campaigning for or what particular measure they're campaigning for um because they are seeking information from
050weed Walkers and they are welcoming us and it's important that we are all involved in the Democratic process and work to engage voters I think just two quick ones one is the celebration of success which was the other night at Concord High just wanted to share the importance of the special ed teachers and instructional AIDS because the story I told at that event was really the night before I happened to speak to a grandmother and who had an autistic child who had not spoken for years and when she entered the program and got hooked up with one of our special education teachers she was done to find her granddaughter talking for the first time in a number of years and I kind of throw that out like they're like this is just a normal everyday
051thing but the patience and the skill of our some of our staff that deal with these students is incredible I put it right up there probably with a heimlich maneuver on someone choking you know she's actually saved a young girl's life and the grandmother said something about there was the birth of a younger brother that may have been the motivator for the daughter to start talking because right away she started in on the brother but I think it was really the skill of our teachers and secondly I forgot to mention last time Dr Meyer touched on it but I wanted to just reinforce the partnership that sometimes happens with our community and our school district and this time it was for Mount Diablo Elementary and the community came together with the idea to improve the
052safety at Mount Diablo Elementary because the fields were gopher holes the size of you know craters and our district jumped in Richard did a great job he stepped in and took it on and Dr Meyer and we were able to actually partner sort of 50 50 with a parent and community group out in that neighborhood and they raised 350 000 through it took a couple of years really it wasn't as if they went out and overnight did it but our district and our board came forward with the matching funds to actually make that happen and I'm amazed to say I think December so we'll have a field up there that will be safe for our students so I just wanted to reinforce sometimes communities and districts can work really well together and I appreciate the
053open attitude our district has toward that working together um so one of the areas one of many areas of interest that I have is how mental unified is engaged with business and industry and employers given the work that I did in that area so as Dr Meyer has met with Business Leaders in the community that occurred to us that having a kind of data that resonate with those leaders that would be meaningful to them is really critical for us to have and so through a couple of efforts of great staff and there was a meeting on the 15th with a gentleman that I thought she'd known for many many years since he's very done a really great job over the years working with data that talks about transitional so when what happens to students when
054they leave the K-12 system and go on to wherever whether it's between college for your universities Employments Etc and um it was hard work when I was engaged with him many many years ago and you know lots of obstacles for being on the track from one system to another as you can imagine because you're you're for sure you're talking about minors you know when they're in K-12 they're minors and the transition and become adults and so um but he's hung in there as a non-profit in the name of which I know already forgotten but I just noticed Ken sorry I know Ken so um came and did a presentation for staff and I joined that meeting and I think it was very exciting to see all the possibilities it's a matter of making sure that
055Matt Dallas data is uploaded which it has been to some point but clearly some gaps that we need to fix so that's already being addressed so um so that was really encouraging this is all in preparation for another convening Dr Meyer again will have with the business community so then she can talk specifically events where our students are going and if there are gaps in their skill sets or learning whatever that need to be addressed so that they're successful at the next level and it's not always on the hands of K-12 because the other side has to be willing to work and cooperate you know to also share the data so we know the community colleges I remember when I was doing the three colleges were on board but not all the four universities were
056and people don't want their data shown you know because of concerns about it so anyway it's just good to see we're really moving ahead of that under Dr Myers wonderful leadership on the 16th I um went to see Wren Avenue Elementary's schools Arts showcase and what I walked in it's just kind of to me this was like what it was all about it's just they had although it was all Outdoors beautiful beautifully set up and displayed they had a little map area where as I walked up his music playing this little guy who was I don't know eight years old I'm guessing I don't know just just going out dancing he was it was just amazing I thought it was so uninhibited you know for a little boy at that age to me it's just
057caught my heart it was like that's why schools like this will work for this you know children like this who have this interest and you know he was really good and you know was just into it it was just really amazing it was really fun but you know to me it was just really again this is why you know creating these opportunities for students is really really important so um they were singing there were children um so I learned that I think it was just the night before two nights before I was watching one of my favorite shows that I like to watch and you know I'm going to say it right there's something called a theremin do you know what that is so it's an instrument if I saw Lady Gaga playing with the
058pyramid on TV the night before and I'd never heard of it before and that sure that there was one there um as it makes that sound like electronic and then wave your hand over and it makes so it was like you know for me I'd never heard of it before and I saw it twice in two days but how cool that it was there at the school so in beautiful beautiful artwork um and you you know you could see the learning that was going on just through the display so the art you know connecting it to you know the history and literature and stuff it was so it's really really great so and I was also at the celebration of success which is you know annual event that we look forward to every year it's
059just again really heartfelt and Dr Meyer did a fabulous job as well as Cheryl Hansen and her the story she told was very fitting so it was like just great to see families and these young students of varying abilities come up and be recognized and it's just it's really pretty much so thank you and I went to a little over a week ago DBC had a strategic planning session that they invited Partners to come to to share what our vision is for our community college system it was really interesting so they had all different um educational agencies and communities members there to share what we would like to see and they're going to actually have a part two on November 7th in Pleasant Hill at the Winslow Center is that yeah so if you were
060interested you have a chance to go to that and hear what the input was from the first meeting and then they'll be sharing out I went to the celebration of success and the csva meeting I went to the um ran art show and it was funny because I heard the familiar Miss Mason and it was a young man that went to went through school with my youngest daughter and he sticks out in my mind because I was invited to talk to their class about local history having been born and raised in Bay Point West Pittsburgh at that time and so I was telling them all about that vanity had changed since I went to school there and then when I finished there was any questions and this young man raises his hand Anthony and I
061said yeah what's your question he goes did you know Abraham Lincoln so he was from Illinois and I had always stuck with me because it was so good I said to see him now he's an artist and he came to talk to this group and it was just great just really great to see him because I had seen him grow up with my daughter and it was nice to have him come and give back to the community then I also went to the d-lac meeting which was very well attended and very good conversation as always and enjoyed that meeting very much and then I did not think that I would be doing this again so soon but last Thursday we had another huge evacuation in the paypoint community my phone started ringing at six in
062the morning people asking me what was going on I don't know why everybody thinks I'm the contact for Bay Point but they do including our supervisor so um I was told I got up and actually started watching the news and heard on the news how Mount Diablo School District was sending school buses up to Calvary Temple church to make sure our children got to school then my phone Ryan it was Dr Meyer asking what was going on I'm like well I thought you were on top of it because apparently our school bus drivers are already there but it's just um again I can't express a very different feeling in Bay Point under Dr Myers leadership and a big thank you to Jose for being there again during the evacuation in Bay Point again they think
063for some reason we can they can use our schools all day even when we have kids in them but um it was really really nice to see once again the district stepping up and being there for the Bay Point Community and um it's not always been that way so I'm very grateful for that that's my birthday so how old was this young man who asked the question about Abraham Lincoln because I have a cut off for that question having Todd High School seven is good 6 17 available I believe a third grade collection okay that's seven you know when I was an assistant principal they'll have her High the one I always got was did you know Joe DiMaggio who's Mr Martinez that's right on your neighbor it's exciting well I'm happy to announce no
064it was a different generation um thank you I was saying whether instead of on top of it I was around it I was next to it I saw the smoke over the hill and I do also want to commend um I did receive a text from someone in a neighboring District who said great job Mount Diablo and it really was our bus drivers took it upon themselves to not only get up early come into work early they called they got up their list and they called the students who were on their their list and their roster to make sure they were okay and their families were okay and then on the news the um there was a shuttle from the Calvary Church up and down on the street to um to see if students wanted
065to go to school so that is just you know the definition of um really autonomous leadership so that was great um also wanted to share and I was going to save it but I won't we don't always share personal things but we have one of our members who had a personal celebration um this week and it was Joanne Durkee who had her first grandchild Donovan on Saturday Saturday so congratulations to the different family [Applause] happiness joy we've talked a lot about it when we go to our um our schools our students are really the leaders in making a point that looking for happiness and fulfillment and and family is so important and I think we may have all seen the article that said recently the freshman class at Yale the class that was completely full
066was the class on happiness and they had to go out the door and couldn't all get in because these are students who work so hard at doing everything they're supposed to do and it's hard and it's stressful and it takes a lot out of them but it's very exciting to start to see that conversation emerge more strongly it's always been there about balance so um when I want happiness I just look at this picture right here and um this is um from the celebration of success and that is just I don't know they're just adorable photos um we'll have more about that okay um one and two saying I put this up here every um every meeting but we do have um something that we work as a team where we believe that it is
067as as mentioned in our comments you know really a responsibility and a moral imperative to do certain things and one of them is to provide every student that we need with some kind of success and some pathway after graduating or after completing their course of study and so um I put Mount Diablo High had their college day so these are four Mount Diablo High Red Devils and um the principal's always wearing his college gear as well as are the staff but you can see here we had a lot of cows I think that's Hawaii there San Jose State haven't had quite a few Stanford but this one was Stanford medicine and he's in the medical biomedical pathway so um you know just beautiful faces and doing great things um but I hearken back to our
068youth and they're still here we've had some wonderful things going on these last two weeks it's been amazing one that I believe got a lot of attention and of course I had to attend just because the Harlem Globetrotters they came to Valley View Middle and they um they shared a message on anti-bullying and I put this picture here on the right because Lisa Sullivan if I stood next to her I'd come up to about her belt but these gentlemen were six eight six seven and they really have a great message so we're gonna just play a little something about the news coverage of this event the Globetrotters are known for clowning around but they came to Valley View Middle School in Pleasant Hill to deliver a serious message about the ABCs of bullying prevention [Music]
069these middle schoolers were all in on the message of action bravery and compassion their school was chosen thanks to the artwork of Valley View dad Lionel Jinx last June the Trotters saw the shout out President Obama gave to Lionel on Instagram for the inspirational pictures he draws on the lunch bags his kids Isaac and Zelena take to school every day the Trotters reached out to Lionel and he jumped at the chance to join the campaign you just have no idea what how social media can you know treat your kids or what's going on you know we just want to make sure that they're aware of all the things that can possibly happen to them especially at Middle School the Globetrotters deliver their message to more than a hundred schools every year it's an easy one
070to get across definitely I mean when you're six foot eight six seven foot eight with your hair straight another important message according to new dad moose weeks be like lie now and take an active role in the life of your kids I think it's it's awesome not just to you know be preparing food for your kids every day for lunch but just to send them with a little piece of you to school every day that they can in turn share with others to to help them keep going and keep them motivated I think that's awesome I'm gonna probably steal a page from this book I like to steal a page from his book because he really is doing this for his his children boy and girl every day so that's pretty exciting so moving forward
071we've also had some wonderful things um it was mentioned that we had the walk the 5K and one of the products of the Ed Foundation was hiring an artist for both Rio Vista and for Holbrook and this chalk artist comes and he takes a theme Holbrook took the Jets and Rio Vista um I believe they also had Rockets So they were doing outer space and the students get down get their hands dirty they love that part and they also really designed things with the chalk and you can see our Sheriff from Bay Point um got in the mix and um the adults really enjoyed it as well and so it was a great way for for young people to Express themselves so that chalk art is taking off also wanted to share it was National
072lunch week last week that's when I was over at Monty Gardens and I heard the great story again about the the campus supervisor and their lunches are fantastic they um Dominic Machi has been really passionate about bringing healthy food and different food and local food to our community and so um the salad bars the fruit the students are really doing it really enjoying it and they have a recycle process where they have something they'll take if they want to share they put on this tray something that they want to discard on this tray and then something that's for recycling or different types of trash so they're starting to sort their food and not dispose of all of it but we're seeing a lot less food thrown away which is a great um great data point
073um also I'm putting this in and it's um once again we're there we're at Willow Creek a lot and this week we went over or last week we went over our data with the principals and looked at each individual school and looked at some of the district-wide um feedback and we will have a report for the board on November 5th and so we'll share some information some highlights and some things we're working on with you on that at that meeting red Ren was mentioned it really was a magical evening you had the Frida Frieda right here and so um she um one class focused on different fridas and then we also this is kind of the beginning the yellow line is is the dance floor if you will where this young man um his nickname
074was hip-hop dolphin he that was his he may change it as he gets older um but for now uh and he did a great job just you know kind of like an interpretive dance as well as kind of gymnastic floor exercise and we also had the music teacher at the school who played guitar electric guitar and Jazz and then also here on the right is Anthony who now is very um has had history and is um he is also an artist and so he not only gave a motivational speech but he um spoke to his art and how he went back to school when he was injured as a football player in high school or played in college and could no longer play and so now his his hope is to open up an art
075school and to let other young people create and um just some highlights if you look on our Facebook you can see a lot of fantastic things happening with Athletics every Friday or Saturday they post a a great um montage and track and field it's hot out there and they're they're doing their cross-country and then on the right we have a yv young lady who had a great swing and a little hard to see but the spotlight really was Northgate girls do you know Claire do you know her name and so she um shot first place out of 168 to under par which is good I hear and so you can see her face right there where she um is collecting her award as well so a lot of Award winners going on in all different
076places um Street smarts we had um as mentioned we had not only kind of the walking roll to school with biking and walking on October 10th that many of our schools across the district we had a kickoff with Concord PD at Highlands and pine pine Hollow and so that was it was just a wonderful morning um the mayor edgy person was there we had mini motorcycle police officers there and they were helping students adjust their helmets and they had prizes but I think the um and there's um principal Ben Campo piano and Street Smart staff and they had a bicycle attached to a blender and that was the most exciting thing so they were making their own smoothies human-powered blender so um that was that was a fun fun fun thing to see celebration of
077success got two slides because they're just 50 pictures of wonderful things um and so here you we saw Mr Faye earlier Monty Gardens we have Katie Koontz Rio Vista and then we also have I'm not sure exactly what school this is but this young man on the right was one of two or three who had great bow ties and um special thanks to the CAC Denise Lambert Dorothy weisenberger and the team Hillary Shin who really did a great job putting this event together and so this is um just a lot of a lot of smiles and you can see here Aaron D Martini El Monte on the left here with her student and family and then this this young lady here who you know they they got progressively taller and older as the night went
078on which is better than the other way around I must say and um it was just a wonderful event thank you to Wendy a gilly as well for just building a strong team who contributed so great great late night I wanted to also say at the d-lac outside of the d-lac and I know in there as well we have parents who are completing their diplomas and so we had a mini celebration with graduates and part of and what we like to do is bring the programs to the parents so they can model for the students how to keep going and persevere and so you can see Carmen Garces cundy as well and they were just very excited so it was a wonderful night to see the moms graduating and I know we've had fathers involved
079as well but this evening was one for the moms um Special Olympics at yv high school I was at a meeting at yv and the Special Olympics were there so it was very nice it was it was a county event and um I picked the right day to go and you can see they had um students from around the the um the region YB high in the middle they took care of volunteering and helping with the programs we also had many students who came from our different programs throughout the district this young lady in the um in the wheelchair is named Nelly and there aren't a lot of us in the world so I had to get a photo of her and I did see one of the winners of a celebration of success for
080money garden and she was there as well and she was still talking about Wednesday night she was very excited about it and she said that was Wednesday when that was going on and it was and here as well some photos of some students at the Special Olympics on the left who can competed in soccer and different track events and then on the right another one of our yv high students who are helping officiate and then I also wanted to mention tomorrow night and it'll be 6 30 to 8 30 for juniors and seniors bring an ID we'll have tons of tables about our college fair it's the sixth annual so it's just it's just been great it's every year it's been fantastic and it will be at yv high school and parents of course are
081welcome to attend as well some some may not know that but absolutely and um I highly recommend it I hope to see you there and then lastly thank you and this whole back road the back rows kind of show what the parents we we see the students come up and get the awards but the parents and families and staff members and and teachers Kelly Perkins said it in her speech when she was nominated for um Contra Costa teacher of the year and she said I really thought I was helping them but I realized they were helping me so um just a wonderful event and that is my report thank you okay that takes us for the consent agenda items under consent agenda are considered routine it will be approved or adopted by a single motion
082there will be no separate discussion of these items however any item may be removed from the consent agenda upon the request of any member of the board and act upon separately if you have any requests to pull anything from the consent us yeah that's okay which is item 14.12 please Madam president I know that the board approved the consent agenda as presented with item 1412 being pulled Poll for separate consideration thank you second passes five zero zero people which will become 16.1 Mr Lawrence so I mean joining your discussion first yes so um first I want to thank the the two people and I certainly um support their appointment to budget advisory committee and my representative to budget advisory committee committing a very distinguished representative is here this evening but I just wanted to share
083that the hoping we could get an update soon at a future meeting because in the past I believe the budget advisory committee has not really been on budget advisory committee but it's been more a group that received information versus actually acting in an advisory capacity and so I'm hoping that's something that that's changed but I was just hoping that we could get a update on that yes we can thank you so I would move the board approval of item okay so 16 points team one well that's why that's why so I'd move uh the board approved item 15 point there you go which is the nomination of James France and uh Raymond Raymond second foreign do we have any speakers under Communications no we don't okay which takes us to this is an action 18.1
084Williams quarterly report for October 31st 2018 we saw this last meeting Arena Madam president moved the board approved the ratification of the Williams quarterly summary report for October 31st 2018. show Screen Compliance more passes five zero zero next we have resolution 18 19-22 waiting further formal bidding requirements for supplemental student transportation services anything on this doctor mayor that we need to know I don't know what was in the packet okay Madam president I moved the board approved resolution 18 19-22 waiving further formal bidding replacement a requirement for supplemental student transportation services yeah a second foreign and for our next one 18.3 you Project Lead the Way courses we have a public speaker Michael Schneider again I had a question on this while I was uh reviewing the agenda and uh my former uh position is
085a technologist for the real estate industry at the national level I was reviewing what the curriculum was and at the top it says grades 10 11 and 12. but on the last page it starts breaking down what is covered and it says year one year two year three and in robotics this year four so how are we ever going to get to robotics if we're starting at grade 10. so my question to the board is since it is technology since kids not all of them have access to it some of them do and they're going to do very well some of them this can be very new couldn't this curriculum be moved back a year so that it would give all students that ability to go ahead and go through possibly one course not be
086able to grasp it maybe all the way the first time and then also be able to take that course again for their 10th year and then to be able to incorporate that fourth year for robotics because I don't see how this curriculum you'd be able to cover all that information with technology the way that is in terms of breaks sometimes you'll get a group of kids who will not grasp it they're going to need time so I think it's just really too condensed for a three years it really should possibly look there is being offered at the Freshman ninth grade level thank you thank you to be known staff that would foreign I can just share with the generous Grant from Endeavor that we have robotics clubs at every middle school and also growing in
087high school so we currently have one at Concord High a College Park North Gate I saw you not include but I didn't know but I do know that um it does make sense to look at this to integrate it as you go along rather than waiting for any kind of discreet anything when it comes to computers especially robotics so Heather has more to say it elaborate on my thoughts good evening um so this is the pltw curriculum and so um we have two um different components of the pltw we have the biomedical which is represented by the human body systems and the medical intervention classes and so those are offered at College Park only currently right now and then the computer integrated manufacturing is the third course in the sequence of pltw pltw courses so
088the way it works is that the students are supposed to take the two core classes of introduction to engineering design and principles of engineering and then there's a third class and the school has the option to choose which class to choose from so right now at Mount Diablo they teach both cim which is a computer integrated manufacturing and the civil engineering and architecture but with the growth of interest in Reading robotics both Concord High School and Ignacio Valley has opted to to not do the cea the civil engineering and architecture in place of the computer integrated manufacturing and so they're using that to support the growth of the interest in robotics and I believe at right now at Concord High School there is a robotics course that Tom Trowbridge teaches but I don't believe it's
089currently offered at Ignacio Valley I know that the teacher there Joseph alvarico is moving in the direction of having that fourth class B robotics to support the robotics club that he's done and it's the Capstone course or is it integrated throughout it's considered the Capstone but the technology is integrated throughout so the idea is that by taking the two core classes that when they get to the third they have that technology Foundation to be able to get through the third and those so the reason that these classes are here is because pltw last year submitted their courses to get honors credit um but they didn't change their curriculum to reflect an honors course so what I asked the teachers to do is to take the curriculum that they've been teaching and figure out what is
090it that they're going to do to increase the academic rigor to justify the honors designation and so that's what we did and the cim is on there because we couldn't find the board adopted course of study so that's even though we've been offering cim in our district now I want to say for five or six years we could not find anywhere the board adopted course of study so now we will have a board adopted courses it might have languished in Pilot land possibly so now we will have a board adopted but really the goal was for them to be able to show us um what what's going to differentiate and it's important to note that we didn't do honors for all of the courses because the teachers really were very reflective which I appreciated and
091said you know I'm really not teaching at an honors level so I don't feel like we need to at this point write that course but if they change their mind then we can do that later on so the end of the document like Mr Schneider said does say sequence of courses intro to engineering design is year one so that would be uh 10th grade principles of engineering uh would be 11th grade year two in compute cim would be year three and then it says robotics engineer year four so if we were follow that sequence we would have to start these students at ninth grade if their year-long courses so I can go in and edit that but right now none of them at both Concord High and Ignacio Valley they are not necessarily bound to
092a particular grade level the only um sequence that's bound to particular grade level is at Mount Diablo high school because of the wall to wall model so um and again ideally the students are taking those core classes but that doesn't always happen at yv and Concord they sometimes put students into a class before they've taken the two core classes which is something that we're working on as we continue to refine our pathways any other questions yeah yeah um I just I want to make a comment because I know you know this but um you know Salado is discovered by a Project Lead the Way itself as the organization we have to follow with um the career computer integrated manufacturing is an elective is it a a to G or whatever that's right better yeah yes
093I thought that when we said that somewhere I wasn't seeing it remember that we would indicate can she I feel like you've given us a power that have indicated whether it's I'll take a look at that yeah it should be on the front page at the top um of the course of study or the doctor the course of studying yeah I didn't maybe I'm not saying it but I just that was why if it's not there I can add it okay sure no problem thank you thank you for the question though oh it's just different okay and we are informed alignment of board policies and administrative role 6143-6162.52 617.1 with the elimination of the Cat Stevens Texas which has been going for a while yet okay the questions are discussion about that may it rest
094in peace goodbye and that is for information so okay trusty Mayo Madam president I requested the board uh conduct a board Voice vote on this particular item that has been completed a construction project with this firm over a year now ago now and there's a potential conflict of interest for me if I take a position on this item I don't know entertain a motion from one of the other board answers I move that the board approve Lakeshore Learning transactions for September 2018. trustee Hanson yes yes trustee Mason gosh yes that passes 4-0 one with the smell of steam no recusing okay I don't think we need a meeting extension so we are adjourned thank you
