to the board. Bernie Elementary School presentation by Kate Christensen, principal. Thank you, President Elder, board members Dr. Wesley and members of the cabinet for having us tonight and allowing me to share one of Bernie's signature practices this evening. I'd like to highlight Bernie Elementary's multi-tered systems of support or MTSS. Bernie is proud to be the first elementary school to fully implement a site level MTSS committee. Our MTSS program aligns directly with two of the district's strategic goals uh academic achievement and social and emotional learning. Tonight, I will briefly discuss three components of our MTSS work. First, the members of our MTSS committee. second counselor intervention and third tier 2 supports which address student academic and behavioral needs. Our MTSS committee is made up of a variety of stakeholders including general ed teachers, special education teacher,

classified staff member, school psychologist, school counselor, and administration. One key member is Mrs. Shauna Tixson, the attendance clerk and librarian, who has worked at Bernie for 26 years and plays an essential role in addressing chronic absenteeism and behavioral data. Other members I'd like to highlight are our special education teacher, Miss Thmbi Ramos, and school psychologist, Miss Marcy Samueli, whose extensive backgrounds help us provide proactive tier 2 interventions to address both behavioral and academic needs. Our school counselor, Mr. Josh Bisa is also a vital member of this team. Mr. Bisa supports Bernie in many ways, particularly with student behavior. He is a member of our PBIS team, which regularly reviews behavioral da d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d

d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d da d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d da is also reviewed by our MTSS committee including Mr. BISA and it's used to create a strategic plan to support students. So, for example, if the data shows that a student is exhibiting hands-on behavior, Mr. Bison may proactively teach a social skills lesson focused on conflict resolution uh to support these students. And with the support of our counselor and the full MTSS committee, we have also implemented a check-in checkout system which has contributed to an increase in academic achievement and a

reduction in behavioral incidents and chronic absenteeism. And to share some data with you, in the 20 23 24 school year before Bernie's MTSS implementation, our attendance average was 96.21%. And then 2425, our first year of MTSS, the attendance increased to 96.53%. And so far in the 2526 school year, our average is 96.71% and this is including the most recent cold and flu months. So we are moving in the right direction and our behavioral data has also shown a reduction so far. Additionally, Bernie was the only school last year to complete 100% of secondstep modules, reinforcing our commitment to social and emotional learning. Finally, tier 2 intervention at Bernie is supported through our common schedule, which ensures that no student misses tier 1 instruction. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the significant contribution

of Eileen Lechenby, who the former principal at Bernie, who put this schedule into place. The schedule is impactful because it protects core instruction time. For example, if a student with an IEP requires tier three pullout support. Our schedule ensures that they are not removed from any critical language arts or math instruction. And at this time, I'd like to invite some of our fourth and fifth grade Bernie students to come up and share about the built-in intervention and enrichment time within our common schedule. We are fifth grade students here to explain our wimp pro program which was stands for what I need at Bernie offers both intervention and enrichment opportunities twice a week. Some students work in small groups with the teacher on subjects such as math or writing based on classroom performance tests or by

submitting a form to the teachers to help us. Students who are not in small groups use the time to address individual needs, including completing assignments, practicing skills, or organizing materials. One can focus on any subject or skill that supports student growth. This dedicated time helps us stay on track and continue progressing as learners. >> Hello, I'm Paige. And I'm Clayton. And we are fourth graders from Bernie Elementary. We are going to share about our win and level up experience. >> During win, I meet in a small group to work on my reading skills. I like that I have an opportunity to read in front of my small group to gain confidence. My reading has gotten much stronger and it makes me feel happy and success and successful. I participate in a math group that challenges

me. I get the opportunity to learn fifth grade math and it helps me prepare for next year. The work we do is much harder than a regular math class work. So, I like that I get to expand my math skills. When I meet when I meet with my group, I work hard, try my best, and have fun with it. Thank you, Bernie fourth and fifth grade students. And thank you all for having us this evening. I appreciate the opportunity to share some of the wonderful things happening at Bernie. Sorry, that was wonderful. But before these amazing students sit down, are there any grown-ups you want to introduce us to that that you brought with you tonight? >> Sometimes you don't always have to bring a grown-up, but it helps. >> Um, my mom brought me

today. >> Hi, mom. >> Um, my mom and dad brought me >> My mom brought me my dad and my brother brought me. >> Thank you. No, it's so wonderful to hear how these support systems are working from our students themselves. So, thank you so much. It's a terrific program. Thank you for all the work you're doing to >> help our students thrive. Uh, up next, the 202425 Ronaldo Beach Unified School District audit report and measure S bond audit report presentation by John White House of Christy White Accountancy. I'm sure there will be just as many cute kids for this one. >> And by the way, kids, you don't have to stick around for the rest of the meeting. >> It's okay to leave. Good evening, governing board. My name is John White House. I'm

the partner uh at Christy White overseeing the audit. Um and I have been for the last several years. Um we've concluded our audit of the district's funds, capital assets, long-term debt, and compliance with federal and state law for the year ended June 30, 2025. Um our audit is comprised of two phases. an interim phase in the spring uh followed by our year-end phase in the fall. I want to I want to provide some context and about responsibilities in relation to these financial statements. uh the finan these uh management's responsible uh for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles um in the United States of America and for the design implementation and maintenance of internal controls uh relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of these financial

statements. Um our our auditor or auditor's responsibilities um is to obtain reasonable assurance about whether financial statements or these financial statements are uh free from material misstatement whether due to error or fraud and to issue independent auditors reports that includes our opinions. Uh the results of the audit tests are reflected in the independent auditor's reports and summary of auditor's results. The summary of auditor's results is on page 77 of the audit report. It's a good summary of all our opinions that were uh rendered. We opined on the financial statements, the report on state compliance and the report on federal compliance. All which were given unmodified opinions for the year ended June 30, 2025. An unmodified opinion is a clean opinion. It's the best opinion you can receive from an external auditor. Um overall, there were

no findings for this year. Um and then so that concludes the district report. We also prepared a report on the measure S bond building fund for this year um ending June 30, 2025. So that's the new bond measure S that was passed back in November. Um so for that one we apped on the financial statements overall um including a performance report um both of which were given unmodified opinions as well. Uh so clean opinion uh then there were no findings presented for 2425. Um that concludes my presentation. any questions about the reports? Uh either measure F or the district's full financial statements. >> So I would just start by saying thank you for this much neededed oversight. There's a lot of money coming through the bond um making sure that we are following everything uh

correctly is very important to maintain the trust that our community has in us. So thank you for that. Um also thank you to the citizens bond oversight committee which you briefed recently as well for providing that additional level of oversight. Um, again, the citizens bond oversight committee doesn't make financial decisions, but they do review them to make sure that we are using these bond funds according to the language in the bond itself. Um, so appreciate you working with them as well. Uh, two of us have served on a previous bond oversight committee, so I know how much work goes into this. Um, appreciate you helping them as the committee as well to understand all the intricacies there because and when I started, I didn't know what an unmodified finding was or why it's so great.

I'm very happy that we've received that. Uh but just want to thank you and your team and everyone on the committee who's worked so hard to make sure that um you know everything is correct from the financial side. >> Absolutely. I want to thank um uh Miss Alpern and her team as well. Like without her she makes it very easy for us, provides us everything we need. I know we we request a lot of stuff. So um uh her and her team very very timely and you know fulfilling all of our requests. So I really appreciate that. >> Thank you. Also just want to point out that um all of the audit reports are on our district website both for the bond and for the general budget. >> Thank you. Any more questions or >>

Thank you. >> All right. Up next, item 7.3, new high school courses and CTE pathways presentation by Marvin Brown, our RUHS principal, and Christina Sonata, our UHS assistant principal. >> Good evening, board president, Elder, board members, Dr. Wesley, and Cabinet. Thank you guys so much for allowing us the opportunity to talk about our CT new courses and our CT pathway in our new courses. Um before I introduce our team and turn it over to them, I just want to thank a few people here. Um Dr. Allison Garland for all your support with approving new courses. Uh you're always a phone call or text away. We really just appreciate all the support you've given us uh helping us with this presentation, etc. And Dr. Anthony Toronto, our uh executive director of career pathways. He's been a

support for, you know, this is year two for me at the high school and he's been a great support for us just with dealing with our Perkins funds. Um, getting materials to our classrooms for our teachers, uh, supporting us with field trips, professional development. So, just want to give Anthony a shout out. Thank you, Dr. Toronto, for all your support as well. So, you guys get to hear from a great team. Uh, Miss Sonata is going to present give give a presentation and we'll we're happy to answer any questions that you have as well. Thanks. >> Thank you so much again for letting us come tonight. Sorry, I do have a little thing going on with my throat, but I'm going to um be able to speak and and wanted to carry on. Okay, so

excuse me. We do have two classes that do not fall into our CTE pathway that we wanted to share with you but with all of you to get approved for this upcoming school year. One is in our math department. It's called Explorations and Data Science. And this is a math class. It'll be a math elective that can cover the third or fourth year of math for any of our students. This is a projectbased math class. So, instead of doing a more traditional class where you're learning the math and you take a test and you do it, the students in this class will be able to analyze data. They'll have a showcase of projects, a student portfolio to show after this class is over. um just about the importance of data analysis, sampling, correlation versus causation,

bias and uncertainty, data modeling, and evidence-based argumentation. So, this is a really exciting class that we wanted to bring for some of our students who might not want to take pre-calculus or statistics as their third or fourth year for math. Our second class is in the visual performing arts area and it's called 3D art. the this is a unique class with you can see some of the different projects that the teacher is asking to do for next year. It's going to encompass multiple different uh textiles and different objects. It's a lot more spatial because it is 3D. So, we're doing everything I don't know if you can tell, but we're going to be making life-size sculptures with Saran Wrap. We're going to be doing everything from that to crocheting to making masks. So, this is

another really cool way for our students to get a little bit more out of uh our art classes. Okay, now the really really fun part, our CTE pathways. So, I wanted to share with you all that uh over this past school year, we are looking to align with the new adoptions from the state regarding our national career clusters. This year, the state has um realigned some of our pathways that we have here in California. We were lucky enough to have all of our CTE teachers join me and Dr. Toronto for a 3-day PD in October. So, we can really dive deep into this, looking at what we're offering currently, how we can make it remote, more robust for our students and providing these hands-on careerdriven classes. So, some of our pathways, as you can see,

our cyber security, that one is a brand new pathway that the state has added in. It's from the AP career Kickstarter. But then we do have quite a few of our pathways that are changing names. So our business management and entrepreneurship that was originally this past year we called it business, personal finance and marketing. So there are a few that we are changing the name to fit the national career clusters a little bit better. We also wanted to go over and show for the rest of our different pathways that we currently offer at the school site. We uh we had like web design and digital photo. We are changing that to graphic arts because both of those fall under the graphic arts pathways. National career cluster pathways. We have game design. It's gaming instead of

game design. Hospitality events and tourism is what culinary goes into. And then we get to very excitingly offer a a marketing and sales pathway. So this is new. Before it used to be business and marketing together. And now the state has saw that these two are very different pathways. So now I have the honor of bringing up some of our really amazing teachers who will be teaching some of these new classes next year and they're very excited to share with you. So I know they're not as cute as the little ones that we just saw, but they are pretty cool. U Mr. Waters, Miss Dub, and Miss Land. So they will be coming up and speaking about the new classes that we'll be hoping to offer. >> Okay, Mr. Waters, go ahead. Hello. Um, good

evening. So, my name is Manny Waters the third. So, I currently teach um AP computer science applications and principles. And the class I want to introduce you guys to is the AP cyber security pathway. Uh, with that we'll be having AP cyber security as the concentrator and then as the capstone we'll have the networking with that. Um, I just want to talk about a little bit of the benefits of the class. Um, in addition to the standard GPA boost because of the being AP class and also the college credit, um, it also offers an AP cyber security credential with qualifying score at the end, which is very key. Also, um, it validates job ready skills when they finish the class. In addition, if they choose to, they can take a comp TIA security exam, which

is recognized by the industry, which is really nice for students who want to go into that after um, high school. Also, it provides a an introduction to the career pathway that can be let me see provides introduction to a career pathway that can be continued after high school. So, you can you can go and continue this at a college um a 4-year or a JC with that. Also, the class focuses on professional and technical skills associated with cyber security. And some of the topics include um current cyber threats and tools to use in order to protect and also protect against compromised systems and data. Um this class like mentioned earlier is mostly a project based and the things you learn you can actually apply if you choose to take a career in cyber security which

I think is really good. So thank you for your time. And Manny, do you want to explain the difference between a concentrator and a capstone or somebody else just those who don't know? >> Yeah. So, for all of our pathways, in order to be a CTE completer, students need to take a concentrator class, which is the first level class, and then a capstone class to encompass everything that they've learned. And so, for us, we are offering every pathway has two classes. It starts with a concentrator and moves into the capstone class. So that's why you'll see next to each class um what they're going to qualify as for us. And now we'll have Miss Duvet come on up. Hello. Um thank you so much for listening to us and thank you to everyone involved like

Anthony Toronto and Missatada for allowing us to grow these courses and change them to best suit our kids and make sure that they get the most expansive experience possible in our CT courses. It's been very fun to develop these courses. So thank you to both of those people and everyone else involved. Um, so I currently teach digital photo, which next year is going to be changed and morphed into something much bigger. So, first it's going to be a media arts course, which is really exciting. We're splitting it up into two different sort of like the classic gov and econ where I'll be teaching one side and then Mr. Sheihi will be teaching another. Um, in my course, we focus on like the traditional sort of um we're starting with how to do the technical skills

in photography and then building on that a little bit farther into the CTE course. So hopefully students get hooked on one or the other and choose which way that they want to go either with um photography more based or with like film and television based which would be she which is very exciting. So they get to choose more of where they fit best. Um and then the course that comes after that the one that I'll be teaching um we'll get more in depth with each of the things that we started in that beginning course um with hands-on activities and also like installation based work. Um it's an expansion of photography. It felt a little bit too narrow. So, we're going into branding and design and how to specifically get your work out there and get

people to see what you're doing. So, yeah, that's what we're starting with. So, thank you. >> Thank you. >> And now we'll have Miss Lans come up. >> Hello. I am super duper excited about the marketing pathway that we're doing. Um so uh the concentrator is fundamentals of marketing and advertising and that is just your the foundations of of what marketing is about and then they'll move into the advanced marketing and advertising where we'll focus on uh curriculum uh with DECA. So DECA is the distributive education clubs of America or that's like what what what it means but in reality it is just promoting high school uh it's preparing high school students in the specifically for me the marketing industry. So um we have had the opportunity to use it this year and we went

to our first DECA competition and got fourth place. What? Overall, super duper exciting. Um, and they have their DECA jackets. It's just really exciting. And really how this came about are students came to me and said, "Miss Lann, will you be an adviser?" And they are just so proud of themselves that they're like, "Oh my gosh, we founded DECA at our school." So, uh, so the club, um, we're hoping to be able to go to the state competition with DECA, adding two more, um, seniors so they can experience this. But, um, they are super duper excited about being in DECA and participating and, um, I can't say no to students. If it's good for them, right, and they're excited about it, I I got to say yes. So, I want to say thank you for

your support and growing this and um everything that you do, Allison. You rock. Thank you so much. >> All right. Thanks. >> Thank you. Any questions? >> And then, oh, sorry. I do have one more class that I wanted to share that we didn't get to cover, but as I stated before, our business and our marketing are kind of going two separate ways. So, in order to finish the business pathway, we are adding in the CTE business entrepreneurship 2 class to act as the capstone that originally was Miss Lan's class, which was the marketing class. So, we're separating those two and making four different classes to finish those pathways. And that's the end of our presentation. If you have any questions, you going before me. Um, can we before we get to the exciting CTE

because math's important too. Yes. >> You talked about a new math class. >> Yes. >> And I wanted to ask you said that colleges will accept that. I mean most colleges are looking at four years of math as we know and I love the idea that there's another opportunity for those who are not going into those engineering roles. So this is a class that you've checked will be accepted by un by universities and whatnot. >> Yes. Yeah. This class, we are going to be pushing it forward through the UC doorways as a math class. So, it won't be in an elective, but it'll fall under the math component for the UC system. And we uh double checked and made sure that this is a class that everyone will accept. >> And what kind of student

do you think would take that data sciences? So, we were hoping to have students that were more interested in um statistics, but maybe don't aren't quite prepared to take statistics or AP statistics, but this would give them a step in to start looking at data a little bit more hands-on and then be able to potentially take statistics or AP statistics after that. So, these would be the students that are like algebra 2, but maybe don't want to go into pre-calculus because they're not going to be an engineer like you said. And so this will give them another opportunity to play with math in a more hands-on option. >> And um personal finance, that class used to exist as a math class at the high school. So this is going away. >> No, personal finance will

still stay. We um are keeping both of those classes as of right now because we do have uh personal finance is a class that we will need to be teaching all of our students. >> Okay, that was my next question. What year do we have to be in order 20 2030 >> modelurriculum, >> right? Last time I checked. >> So for those in the audience that don't know, the state of California has mandated in order to graduate from the high school, you have to take a personal finance class, but they have not is what you're telling me, >> right? The model curriculum semester, just one semester. >> Just a semester. >> Yes. >> Right. >> But they haven't submitted the model curriculum. So we >> they haven't shared the model curriculum yet. last time I

checked, but and that's not till 20 >> 2030. >> I'll double check. I think it's >> pretty sure it's 2030. >> Okay. Sorry. Definitely. Anyway, but they still can take personal finance as a math class that's >> Yes. Yes. So, this would kind of >> Yeah, it's not. >> I didn't think it was next year, but >> yeah. >> And so, we're keeping that class so that we can offer that to students as well. And then sometime we were thinking that students could also do this exploration in data science and then do personal finance too. So they could get the four years without having to do more traditional math classes if that's not for them. >> Okay. And then on the CTE capstone and um classes are any of those that you propose um there

isn't a that can also satisfy a math credit or are these all electives? >> These are all electives at this time. Okay. Um, we haven't looked into. The only ones that I could think that potentially might be considered math we can look into it is pro potentially the AP cyber security and AP networking potentially >> just because it's so difficult when you're trying to get all those graduation requirements in to try and >> you know put this specialist in order to be if you could get English credit for a CTE class or a math it would be awesome eventually. I mean >> but you need 80 units of electives. So once you know I mean you that's that's the the best problem to have at Rodon Union High School is there just too many options.

>> Oh absolutely. >> As a parent of a sophomore I trying to figure this out as well. >> Not for Christina. She does a master schedule. >> Yeah it's hard. You can't take it all which is why students take zero periods or >> decide not to take athletics their junior year >> senior. And my last qu question, there is a business entrepreneurship one class. >> Yes, that is just a rename of the class that we have currently. We're keeping that one all the same, but we're just renaming it CTE business entrepreneurship 1. So that it and we wanted to rename a few classes so it made a little bit more sense in the pathway so students know I go from one to two and make it a little bit easier. >> So they may not

necessarily be a brand new class. It's just a new name. >> Yes. A new class that already exists that matches the state pathway. >> Correct. Okay. >> Thanks. Okay. This is her favorite. >> Um, so thank you very much for all of the um course submissions. I was really surprised to see that AP cyber security and the other one >> AP networking >> that they're lab sciences. >> Yes. So that is what um the AP college board said could fall under lab sciences. So that's what we went forward with moving forward to follow kind of what the AP college board had set forth. >> Okay. So will those count? For example, on AP cyber security it says that could be for 9th, 10th or 11th grade. So is that counting for their science requirement? >>

It would be a science elective. All students still have to take the biology and chemistry. >> Okay. So really it really it's an elective. It is an elective. >> It's an elective science course. Yeah. >> An elective lab science. >> Yeah. Elective. Lab science. >> Yeah. >> Right. But I think we listed that as an elective and this one we're listing as um lab science. >> Yeah. Physics is listed as a lab science. >> Oh, physics. I thought she said something else. Um, >> so why not in 12th grade? >> So, all of our students in order to complete a pathway have to take two years of a course. And so for us, in order to increase our dashboard numbers, we put um all the concentrator classes as 9 through 11 because that way we

can have more students complete the pathway >> earlier in the year because they wouldn't if if you started a concentrator at as a senior, you wouldn't be able to take the capstone class. >> Would you consider allowing seniors though because the class is new? >> We would consider allowing it. Yeah. for this year and for next year to try to grow the program a little bit more. >> Okay. Um Okay. So, AP networking would be the next one that would go in. Okay. >> Yeah. And that's why on AP networking we said no freshmen could take it because we want them to take the cyber security class first in order to complete the pathway so that we can increase our numbers on our dashboard as well. >> Okay. And that then I think answers my

question on explorations in data science. Um that's not for nth grade. >> Yes, students would need to finish algebra 2 in order to take that class. So we don't necessarily have a lot of students taking algebra 2 as a freshman. But if we or even before freshman year because they would need to take it before they would get to the high school. We would consider that if a student did complete algebra 2 and they wanted to go into this, but that's not really the student we're looking for. that student's mostly going to probably go to our calculus 23 class, our dual enrollment class. Yeah. >> Okay. Um that's fantastic. The the amount of classes that we're offering and the AP options in ninth grade now every year are expanding. I'm a little scared about that,

but it seems to be going well. >> So, um it's exciting. >> Thank you. And I so I just wanted to echo what Mr. Brown said um with regards to thanking Dr. Toronto, Dr. Garland, and the high school team and our teachers that are willing to go and teach these elective courses. I hope that any of our public, our parents at the middle school, even elementary school recognize that um my oldest son who's going to be 26 did not have these electives when he was at Roondo. And I don't even think my soon to be 21-year-old, but my 12th, my uh 10th grader, my sophomore is going to have that. And so exciting. I really just want to thank all of you um for just expanding these opportunities for our students. So, so exciting for

this pathway to Red Roondo. So, thank you. >> Thank you. >> Uh just want to echo all the thank yous. And as you may recall, everyone is a math person. Okay, everybody repeat after me. We are all math people. >> Not doesn't mean we're all going to be scientists, engineers, physics majors, but we all live and breathe math and and everything that we do. So, thank you for adding additional classes. When we start talking about reviewing secondary math uh curriculum, we realized, hey, we may need to add more math classes and we're doing that. And and that's because students were sitting here because you are the most important member of our school district. Everything that we do is for you and the grown-ups here are dedicated coming up with ways in which more options albeit

there may be too many option in some some senses but these are available. Um I I I'm also appreciative that that we are offering additional lab science classes as a parent of a senior applying to all the schools. Many schools require many certain number of lab sciences and those will count. So that it, you know, adds more options to more students if they're going to college. >> And I am so thankful to Dr. Toronto and Dr. Malison Garland and all the leaders here making more options available to our teach uh our students want to learn other than perhaps going a college route. So thank you for all that you do and continue to do the work for our students that are here at home and and studying for finals this week. Right. >> Thank you.

Thank you. Um, so not to be a broken record, but I realize how much work goes into this. Uh, and so I just want to say a sincere thank you because this is giving students more opportunities um, to find their passion, find something they're interested in, find an area of growth. And so I really appreciate that. Uh, because it is an incredible amount of work. Uh, one of the most common questions I get from parents about this is how are these new classes chosen? How do we decide to to launch a new class? And one of the biggest things I always tell them is, well, it starts with do you have, you know, an incredibly dedicated teacher who wants to take that on? So, thank you to our teachers for launching these new classes. Um,

I know it's always scary when there's something new, but it's exciting. Um, and it's trailblazing. And so, I really appreciate you taking on that challenge. I'm also a little bit biased because my degree is in computer science and my career is in cyber security. Uh, but I love seeing, you know, these opportunities for our students. Um, giving them the chance to try something new and and, you know, maybe this is what they're they're looking for. Um, in terms of timing, I know we always have around this time of year when we're talking about this and if I recall correctly, it's we really want to get the course catalog finalized, not just for our current students, but also for are you ready night? Um, so we we think these are going to be ready for are

you ready night and we'll be able to talk about those. >> Yes, they're actually already in our course planner and there's a little aster saying pending board approval. So, >> be approved. >> Yes. So, tonight hopefully we'll get that answer and we can move forward with all of those. >> Excellent. Well, fingers crossed. And and also, you know, just going back to um you know, if you are a senior and you're interested in one of these classes and things like that, too. I know it makes scheduling more challenging. We want to give students the chance to complete the full pathway, but if you see classes in the corn in the catalog that you're interested in things like that, talk to your counselor. Would that be the appropriate path? >> Perfect. Thank you. Yeah, I just

want to give all of our students a chance to find their passion at the high school and, you know, pursue whatever it is that's your dream. So, um but thank you. This is incredible. I love seeing these opportunities. I know it's a ton of work. I hope his road gets better. I know there's a lot of that going around right now. Um, so everyone stay healthy as much as possible. >> Any other questions? >> Great. >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> Sorry, we don't normally ask that many questions for just a board report. >> Up next then is item 7.4, midyear strategic plan update presentation by Dr. Nicole Wesley, superintendent. Okay, good evening board members. Um, this is about the time of year where we like to give you an update on

the strategic plan. And so, um, I do want to share, um, that I might have, did I bring the wrong clicker up here? Okay, sorry. Um, I do want to share that. Am I doing that or hold on is gonna bring me the right maybe she's bring me the right clicker. Um that the school newsletter that the January newsletter that went out last week did highlight um several of these objectives as we reflect on the new year and celebrate all that we've accomplished thus far. Um and so I will speak a little more intently on the ones that weren't highlighted and of course you can ask any questions. Here's our vision statement. Realizing passion and purpose, maximizing success and significance. These are our five um goals that we have in our strategic plan. And um

these are the 31 objectives that fall within the five goals that I'm going to speak about this evening. First, academic achievement. Uh as you know, we formed an adoption committee and so I want to thank the committee for all the hard work. Um again, Dr. Garland leading that committee along with her team and uh Mr. Cho is on this committee as well. Um and we have narrowed down the pilot options after vetting seven different curriculum to curricula to to four and and we are now down to two and the teachers are currently piloting two curricula. believe um they finished the first pilot and now we'll be beginning the second pilot and we look to bringing a recommendation to you for board adoption um in about a month March I believe is the timeline. As you

know we did adopt middle school English language arts wit and wisdom continuing on uh 6th through 8th uh at the end of last year and want you to know that it's being implemented. We've had dedicated training planning time. Um we are seeing uh the teachers working together with this implementation and so we're moving forward um with that adoption and supporting the teachers as as they implement honors committee. Um again like to reiterate that honors is not going away. um rather this committee is evaluating our middle school honors program to make sure that there's alignment within the school and w between the two middle schools. Um also looking at possible indicators for success or criteria similar to what we did for the math acceleration. Again, we would be talking to you about that, but that's part

of the conversations and defining um what makes a course honors um just so that we have um integrity to the course. Happy to share that the SEAK committee you can see there which is uh made up of teachers our special ed staff and teachers and administrators has been meeting consistently throughout the year. We are waiting on news from the SULPA but it looks like we are in compliance um after being targeted um monitoring for on-time IEP completion. So last time we reported we we are at um 100%. So, we're just making sure that's validated through the SULPA. Um, we had a we have a goal about um creating an MTSS committee and looking at um interventions and so the MTS committee is in full effect. The key goal is to create a district-wide SST process.

Um there's some misalignment there. So we want to make sure that we have um we have a process in place uh for early intervention as well as defining what the tier 2 academic inter interventions are and providing training and support for all staff in those tier 2 academic interventions. We have a goal to explore the possibility of beginning a Mandarin DI program this coming fall or later depending on what we find. Um to date we have 158 people who've filled out this survey sitting there interested as of earlier today I checked uh many of whom are from our eight elementary schools beach babies sand tots local monasteries and every school district around the uh Roondo beach and so majority of them are kindergarteners there are some TK students and some first graders going into these

grade levels so many are going into kinder most um but there are some are going into TK TK, some going into first. Um, so we still have some steps we need to take. We are going to meet with the staff to get any feedback and answer questions. Um, and we will be having planning meetings and forming a committee to um, see the phys feasibility of beginning this program next year. So, we're we are moving forward on on seeing what we can do. Um, we have a secondary grading committee. This was one of our goals to revisit board policy 51-21. Um um and the whole purpose of this committee, the intent of the committee was to create um to revise the board policy so that it states that there's equitable grading policies in the same course

for secondary and grade level for elementary. Um, part of the concern raised by my student advisory council is that students who take courses um the same course, different teacher could be um subject to policies that are inconsistent, such as one teacher may round up, one teacher may not round up, and we're talking about the exact same course. So, they're both like in a chemistry course or they're both in an U English 9 course. We're not talking about one as AP and one as honors. same um or one may allow retakes, one doesn't. One may penalize for late work, one may not. So, uh we would like to bring port policy to you um recommendations from this committee on February 10th for initial reading and then based on your input bring back to you February 24th

with any requested revisions for approval. Would like to thank the teachers and the students um on this committee. We've had a lot of fruitful conversations and we are making some progress. Want to give kudos to Eileen Lechabe again. She's doing a phenomenal job at leading the ILT discussions along with the support from the ED services team and Dr. Garland. Um she has met met with all the ILTs are currently analyzing winter map data. you will receive a report in your update about that about our progress on MAP um from the winter assessment and there's also uh she and Ed services are and Dr. Garland and Mr. Lopez are meeting with each principal to analyze that map data who and then in turn is meeting with their grade levels and their entire school teams to discuss

that map data. uh where are our strengths this point in the year and where do we need to have a focus whether that be grade level or individual students and I too am looking at the data and having conversations um I've attended all the meetings thus far and um we will continue to share that data with you u once we finish all the meetings okay uh moving on to social emotional learning you see here that under the leadership of Mr. Curtenbach. We have a committee that's been looking at our smart smart device um policy, board policy 5131.8. And we're aiming at a March 10th board meeting for a first reading of that revised policy. Um and with recommendations and so just here are some of the core recommendations thus far. Not too different than what

our current practices are. Um, but we would be uh wanting devices to be away. Uh, and and just a reminder, this is in response to a law, a state law that we have to have a policy in place before the end of this school year. And so, um, that will be coming in the form of a revised board policy to you in March. But the committee's been meeting and they've made recommendations and so we will provide a more detailed update and a Friday update prior to that that presentation, but you will hear more about that in March. Want to give a shout out to Kelly Goo and um our middle school counselor, Tupe counselor and um also Maya um Daly. She's our new wellness counselor at the high school. She's doing a great job from

what I hear and she together they've been implementing the TUPE um C program and courses through grades 6 through 12. uh despite a decrease in funding um they're still implementing this program and providing um lessons to students. And in terms of suspension data, we have seen an improvement in um substance use or possession uh per suspension data to to date. However, um there's a lot of variables and we'll leave it at that. But we believe this is making an impact. Um, we have a goal to implement PBIS on on every school campus and we're proud to say that some schools had PBIS and we've rebooted it and some hadn't, but all schools um have rebooted and began with the PBIS training in partnership with LEO. Um, as you can see here, each school has a

team and each school has participated in two 4-hour trainings thus far and schools are reporting that they're seeing less behavior incidents. Um, this is sort of part of aligned to what was presented earlier by Miss Christensen. Um, the services team um, under the leadership of Mr. Curtinbach and Miss Lechenby has created a parent ed. And so just as a reminder, these sessions are recorded. They are found on our website under families and then RBUSD parent ed series. And we are seeing about approximately 50 families logging in um to these sessions uh to watch it live. So hoping that the more support we can provide our families, the more we can partner with them and support their students. Special thanks to Mr. Spant for taking the lead on all things attendance improvement and to our principles

and counselors for having meetings with families who we've identified as seeing um chronically absent but proud to also say we are seeing an improvement in our attendance to date uh because of the interventions and the communication that we're having. So, here is a summary of the data showing that our overall attendance rate at this point has gone up about a half a percent and that our year-to-ate chronic absentee rate has also improved. And so, we're h excited to see this upward trend. And we encourage all students to come to school. Obviously, if you're sick, that's a different message, but um you know, for learning purposes and other reasons, we um want to continue to see that number go up. So happy to see that. Okay. Post-secondary preparedness. We have a goal to bring information to

our families um about post-secondary goals particularly around college planning and saving. So we've had two of the three events um so far. The first event as you can see by Jeff Celingo was very well attended and well received. The second event um I attended with Dr. Toronto. That one we need to um reflect on the time of year. That one wasn't as well attended. So probably not a good time around finals. So we are looking at moving that one uh to a later date for next year. U but we do hope folks will come out on February 11th. It's after finals. This this is geared toward um geared towards elementary, middle, and high because it's about financial planning. And as you know, waiting till high school to plan for college is a little late. Um,

but it's never too late. But we encourage everyone to come out and we do have KKA there because they do have resources to help people plan, but just really information about what we can do to open the door for options for students with early planning. And that's thanks to Dr. Toronto. Um, this um this this is really exciting. Again, kudos to Dr. Toronto for applying for a grant um which purchased the anatomage table and now it's being used in the biomed classes. So that's what you're looking there. As you heard earlier, he's been instrumental in helping with um changing our pathways to being more aligned with the state. So I'm not going to reiterate that. But I did want to highlight this table which is very runs about 60,000 to 100,000. I think we got

the >> higher than >> the BMW version of it thanks to a grant. Um, and so it's a lifesize interactive 3D visualization system and it displays digital a digital human. Um, and it enables students to see systems like the skeletal system, the muscular system, the vascular system. You know, there they can look at an actual EKG occurring and then see the heart pumping and the blood going through the system all at the same time. um it simulates procedures that students learn in med school. So, as you can see, there's a lot of excitement around that and we're happy to to bring more tools to our our programs at the high school. Another goal in our strategic plan was to bring u more to bring dual enrollment to Rodondo Union High School. So, we are making

progress on that. Uh I know Miss Dr. Toronto's meeting soon to look over the an agreement that would be coming to you for approval. But you can see the courses that have been identified um for dual enrollment, meaning that students who enroll in these courses would earn credit for both the high school transcript and college credit. And that's advantage of dual enrollment. And so again, we don't have u we don't have a signed agreement yet, but we're making progress and looking forward to bringing that to you. Our fourth goal had to do with human resources and enhancing the capacity of our staff and acknowledging staff not just at the end of the school year. Um, and so we just want to give especially a shout out to M who's really um had the strongest uh

support and participation in the mentor mentorship program. As you know, I meet with every new employee and new many new of the new employees, particularly classified shadow our veteran employees, our stellar employees so that before they begin working, they can see um what the job entails, they can get support, um meet new colleagues and just a better support system for them. And so the goal is to get more people in that in that um shadowing program before they begin. And so, um, and some of our instructional aids also have participated in that. Um, we hope to have a faces and stories coming to you soon. Those are always fun. Um, you know, our the person who's made them, Sam Sam Elper, has done a great job, but kudos to him. He actually got a job

in the district. So, that's taken taken some of his time, but we've identified the next one and he's working on it. So, we hope to bring that to you to you soon because we know it's a fun way to learn about our staff but highlight them as well. Happy to say uh with Dr. Stephanie and of course Mr. Winkler, a leap has begun again. Um this is leaders exploring admin administrative positions and and which is really great this year is we have classified staff who are joining uh because they u may want to go into leadership positions as well. So, it's in just another way that we want to support our staff who may be interested in in promoting a promotion position or just learning leadership development um in their current role. And so, as

you can see, we have six sessions and I believe they've had their first session already. Uh last but not least is is our goal number five and we as you know we have a goal to strengthen our IT infrastructure and security and and our IT job IT staff are doing a phenomenal job in this area. Um very responsive. I get spam all the time. As a matter of fact, I got one tonight. And so, um, they've taken a lot of measures to improve our cyber security, including adding the additional, um, programs that we talked about in the newsletter, software, etc. Um, and we created a new role, cyber security manager, uh, because we are constantly, um, being threatened by outside entities that are trying to get our data. So, this is an ongoing effort. Um,

most of which nobody knows. We'd like to keep it that way, but we also want to keep our student and staff data secure. So, um, we'll move forward with that. We've made progress with our AI, as you know. Um, students do have access to Gemini. Um, this is all decided through an AI task force. If you go on our website under it, we have an AI guidance book. Many other districts have been asking to look at it as a guide. We're very proud of it under the leadership of Dr. Susanna Garcia. the toast IT TOSAs and um an IT team and very proud of Ian there, one of our seniors who created a video um and the video talks to students about how to ethically use AI and the ways that you can use it

to help study to give you timely feedback. And I believe that's also posted on our website if I'm not correct. If not, we can get that out. But um he was invited to be part of a uh statewide panel discussing the AI that's why we're in this picture um discussing um his role in promoting AI for students ethically. So um just proud of that work. And then last but not least, uh Measure S. Oops, sorry. Go back. uh measure S uh we we do put out quarterly updates but and they're on our website. Um we've made some progress and so I won't get into the details but we've have spent actually I think it's nearly 40 million um of the 80 million thus far on projects and we will be coming to you soon with

a discussion on architectural designs for for Lincoln TK Madison Kinder and high school projects. So, we're excited to bring that to you so we can get those architectural designs approved and in off to DSA. So, we're doing a lot there. So, I just want to um first of all thank our staff who are part of all of these efforts and on these committees, our students, their voice is heard and and they are also represented on all these committees um for helping to move our goals forward and of course your support. Anyone have any questions about anything in particular? Yes. >> Okay, >> that was a lot. First of all, thank you very much because that was very thorough and I feel like there was a lot in it. I took I >> have a few

notes. MTSS the ODIA that um how we can call SSTs and stuff. I think that's super important. You said that committee is already in place. >> Yes. >> And will they be bringing us a report as to what they find? Is there a scheduled date for that or and who's on that committee? >> Dr. Dr. Garin, I'll let her answer. >> I can send you there's um there's teacher representatives on that committee and we have administrators. I can send you a list if you'd like, but we will be presenting in the future of what the MTSS committee completed this year, >> like this school year, you think, or is it future? >> I'll have to look at the document. We have a running document of when our presentations are and I'll let you know, but

I'll >> Yeah, we have um again, we have a a list of when we want to do presentations to you. So, you've heard me reference that, but for MTSS, I want to say it's in March, but it is this school year. >> This school year. Okay. >> Yes. >> Okay. And then, um, spread them out. We're trying to spread them all out because they're they're coming. >> And I love that you gave us the timeline for seeing that equitable grading policy that's coming up in February. >> And at some point, I know we're just looking at the feasibility of Mandarin, but that will be brought to the board before it is fully implemented in the fall. Correct. like there'll be a process for us to ask questions and approve that before it's definite happening in

the fall. >> Yes. So, we will have a presentation of all the information that we gather. Um again we're looking at details of who's interested um what whether or not we're going to start with would we be starting with K would be starting with K1 would it be 50/50 9010 so once we have >> how many classes and could we find teachers all those things >> all that so yes that will come to you for your approval uh and decision as to whether or not we move forward in the fall or or after the fall next year the year after or at all. Okay, I think that was it. Does anyone else have any >> I just thank you again for working with us to put together the strategic plan because that's something that really

does help shape these multi-year initiatives um where we're not going to do it in year one. We're going to start planning in year one, but it gives us that roadmap so we've got this stable path forward uh where everyone can align and focus in the same direction. So I know it's a lot of work um but you know it gives us this this common path to follow. So, thank you and thank you the for the board as well to all your efforts to really put this together and follow it. >> Oh, yeah. It's definitely a team effort and what's great about the strategic plan um and planning it, it's again, this is our third year of it, it really helps us focus um on the things that are important to our students and our staff

and our community. Um and so with that focus and with that alignment um we know what we need to work on and you know that's the data that we're looking at etc. So uh really just keeps us all moving in the right direction. >> Thank you. >> Since we're bragging Ian um the picture that Dr. Wesley mentioned is actually was national congressional briefing. Yes. and we had uh students participating across the country um participating in the particular topic. He was so um good. I was so impressed and I was very happy that he spoke on behalf of all the young people and what we do. So just another prop for Ian such a such a great young man and we're I'm so proud of him and I'm so proud of all of us. Good good

a good good result here. >> He's definitely a role model when it comes to AI. He's and he's very big on again e ethical use of AI. Um and I know that Mr. Elder's also in that picture. That's who got cropped out. But um apparently we needed to just get the picture to fit. So sorry, but thank you for being there, Mr. Elder. >> Students are the star. That's okay. >> Were there any other questions? >> I just Yes. >> I just want Well, and I did that. You're welcome. Um, I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that your principles when they come to speak to us, they always tell us what part of the strategic plan, what they're talking about aligns to, and it really helps us all kind of stay connected

and on the same page. So, thank you. >> Well, thank you. Um, and I it's nice to see that as well, but we do work as a team and we want to make sure that time invested in these programs and committees and policies is in alignment to our plan. And so saying that explicitly helps you see that we are working towards this plan and the community to see that everything is done with purpose and intent. And so, um, it is nice to in my third year superintendent, um, have that alignment. We have a great team. We're all on board. We know what the plan is and and it's not easy work and we're just very lucky that we have committed staff members who want to be a part of it. Um and who understand the

value of the goals and objectives. So, we appreciate your support. And of course, we're going to need to get together and decide what the next three years look like. Believe it or not, it's been three years um that we've been following this plan. Um, I will come to you in June with an update, a progress report at a board meeting and we can discuss more about the strategic plan from there. But thank you for that, Rachel, Miss Silverman. Any other questions? This will be posted um there on the website there is a button that says measure uh strategic plan. So it'll be the most current posting um likely tomorrow. >> Thank you. Up next is item 7.5, student board member report by Key Gould. As you may have noticed, she's not here tonight because it

is finals week. Apologies to our students who are here in person during finals week. Uh but I will give her report for her. Uh and sadly I have not missed. Students are getting excited for winter formal on Saturday, January 31st from 7:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. The theme is Top Gun Seahawks Take Flight at Fullerton Airport. The ticket includes a DJ, music, food, desserts, photo booths, billiard tables, games, and so much more. In partnership with Connect the Federal Credit Union, a Smart Strategies for College financing workshop was held on Wednesday, January 14th in the RUHS library. UCLA blood drive will take place at the Roondo campus on Tuesday, February 3rd. Donors receive a $10 gift card that is redeemable at over 30 restaurants. The Great Kindness Challenge will take place January 26th to 30th. All

RBSD school sites will use chalk to encourage kindness and write kind words around campus. Adams Middle School is preparing for their winter spirit rally, seventh grade dance, club rush, and their spring spirit rally. Paris Middle School has their Valentine's Day dance, Panther Games assembly, and end of the semester popup taking place in February. And that is all. Up next, we have our hearing section. Members of the audience may address the board on any topic regardless of whether it is listed on the agenda. However, due to Brown Act regulations, the board cannot engage in public discussion on items not on the agenda. Topics not on the agenda which are brought to the board's attention may be investigated by the administration and a report made to the board either publicly or privately at a future meeting. Comments

from visitors shall not exceed three minutes unless the time limit is waved by majority of the board. The board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to 20 minutes. With board consent, the president may increase or decrease the time allowed for public presentation depending on the topic and the number of persons wishing to be heard. Do we have any advanced written requests? No. Uh then are there any comments or questions? Anyone want to speak to anything on the agenda tonight? Would anyone like to speak on any non-aggenda items? Students, this is your chance. You You came all the way here. Nothing. All right, then. Moving on to communications. >> No pressure. Uh, this section provides an opportunity for the board of education to hear reports and communications from our employee associations

and the community support organizations listed below. All reports are limited to five minutes. Members of the public may address the board of education concerning this section. Each speaker will be permitted to speak for three minutes per item. The board may limit the total time for public input on each item to 20 minutes. Starting with Roondo Beach Teachers Association. Good evening. My name is Jennifer Bell and I am the spotlight RBTA member coordinator for the board meetings and I'd like to introduce to you um our special education teacher at Burl Elementary, Billy Barnhart. He's going to share some information about what he does. >> Thank you. Uh good evening to the board, Dr. Wesley and the cabinet. And uh thanks thank you Jennifer for letting me uh come and speak. And um so as she said,

my name is Billy Barnhart. I'm a the special education or as we call it in the elementary level learning center um teacher over at Burl Heights Elementary. I uh have two kids in the district. I have a son who is an eighth grader at Paris who just got cast as the cowardly lion for the school. Yeah. For the middle school play. And my daughter just got cast as a singer in Something Rotten um back background singer, but she's um she is a singer songwriter. She's actually written a song. She writes and plays guitar and um so she's dipping her toe into that. But um I've been working at Burl Heights since 2008. Um it's at the at at this time at that time actually it was just me. I was the only learning center teacher

there. Um and then as as we went on, our case load got larger and larger. So then we brought in another one, Kate Buan halftime, and then we finally were able to hire her on full-time. So um it's changed quite a bit. At the beginning when I taught, um I would sometimes see students for up to two hours a day with just basically, you know, mild disabilities. We've really pushed hard to allow the students to stay in the classroom more. Um, one thing that we have to balance is um, meeting their IEP goals. So, as a special education teacher, we assess the students and then we write IEP goals and then we come up with an individual education plan. A lot of you are aware how it works. So, we have our goals, but another

thing, and this is the trick about it, is the time that students have to miss the regular class to come and get services in the learning center. So we're working more and more with adapting either adapting or doing accommodations on the curriculum whether it's witten wisdom or Eureka math. So we've uh done well at that. So we serve um students with learning disabilities. Uh we have some students with either high functioning autism. Um we have one student that's uh has a few more severe needs which wouldn't typically be in an elementary setting. Um, but we what we've done is we've allowed them to have the great him to have the greatest possible uh time in the actual regular classroom. So, we've adapted some of the curriculum for him and he was able to just go

on the fifth grade camp. So, the thing that I'm really proud of is the team I work with. Um, in addition to Kate Bin, we have Reena Troden who's been the speech and language pathologist at Burl for I think 25 years now or more. Um, and then we have Marcy Samueli who is our school psychologist. We have uh Jessica Smith who is our occupational therapist. And one thing that we do is we work really hard to um allow the parents to feel like they've got a that they have trust. And I'm really I think that's one of the biggest things because it's scary if you have a student that's struggling. and it can be frightening, but just to have um some people that you know are kind of on their side and on their team

um goes a long way. So, I'm really proud of our team doing that. We have I'm lucky to have an amazing um PAR educator in my classroom, Shannon Grant and uh Molly Kurosima. And um so in addition to being a learning center teacher, I'm also on the PBIS committee. We are year two, tier one. Um, and we're doing great. We're rocking it. We have the posters up everywhere. We've been having dances. I get to be the DJ at these dances. So, we're really And I have to thank Miss Freellander. She's done a great job of really hyping it up. So, um, I'm excited to be part of that. And, um, and oh, I was going to mention the wind time that was talked about earlier. It's been really good for us for what I spoke

of of allowing the students to stay in the regular classroom um because they're able to use that time to come to the learning center and they're not missing their core academics. So um and also I was part of the centennial community this year. We had our burl celebrated at centennial. So um I just love the district. I'm I'm I have to thank miss Dr. Wesley again for um both for my son especially getting into Roondo. I know I was a pain at the time but it's because I believe in Roondo. We I lived in Torrance but it meant a lot to me to have the students come to Roondo and I loved Burl Elementary and that's why I wanted them there. I knew that they would be getting an experience there that they couldn't get

anywhere else for a public education. It's amazing and that I have both my kids, one at Paris and then one in Roondo High. I couldn't be more grateful. So, thanks again for allowing me to say a few things. And uh that's that. Thank you. >> Thank you so much for sharing. Uh, up next, California School Employees Association, American Federation of Teachers, Roondo Beach Council Parent Teacher Association. Good evening. I'm Amy Hub, president of Roono Beach Council PTA, and I wanted to share about an exciting event that the Council PTA is hosting coming up on February 4th, 7 to 8:00 p.m. in the Rodondo Union High School auditorium. We have a great keynote speaker, Travis Allen. Um he'll be leading a parent workshop. He's talking about um preparing our kids for an AI world, how to

nurture the human skills that will be very valuable in an AI world. And this will be open to all adults and students ages 11 plus. So, middle school and high school students. And uh you'll be seeing flyers and emails from your principles and PTA in the newsletters coming up in the next week or two. And next, I wanted to introduce our fabulous Bernie Elementary PTA president, Mallerie Green. >> I have an old thing that might be falling apart, but I thought it'd be fun to have a little visual. My name is Mallalerie Green. Hi, thank you for having me. Um, I am the proud president of Bernie Elementary PTA this year and next. Um, just want to thank you so much for having me here tonight as I brag a little about RBUSD's best elementary

school. Um, I think the Burl people have left, right? So, I'm not offending. Oh, no. Darn. We're all the best. Truly. Um, we really are. Um, as many of you know, Bernie is a very special school. Not only are we the smallest or one of the smallest, I think we're still the smallest, but we have the most fun. Um, we have the best teachers and staff, and I'd say that our families and students are second to none. Um, during my time as president, I'm prioritizing community within our school. I want all families to feel that Bernie is home. Um, one way that we're achieving that, um, is we're encouraging our room parents to schedule grade level meetups. Um, whether it's a park day or maybe a mom's night out, um, we want families to get

to know each other and, um, just to get together. We um were only in this elementary period for a handful of years and um what better feeling at your child's fifth grade promotion to look around and see faces that people that have become true friends and then seeing children going on and going to their next chapter and you're truly cheering them on because you really know them. Um a school that feels like a community is one that gets more volunteering, a sense of pride in their school and their school district. um and of course more funds raised so that we can do more um exciting experiences for these kids during these precious years. Um at Bernie we take pride in our amazing events, some very special events there. Again, this is from last year, so

if things are falling off, I apologize, but we have um movie night, trunk or treat, um multicultural night, STEM night, glow dance to name a few. But um the biggest and probably the most fun event at our school is the carnival. Um this event takes a lot of planning and probably 20 to 30,000 steps that day. But um it is the favorite easily. Yes, it's a favorite of our students. It is such a special event in fact that some of our PTA alum come back and support us and um they sell tickets at the carnival. One might even be in this room. Um, every year we tried to improve our carnival and make it even better than the year before. Um, one of the improvements that we made was a couple of years ago when

we had a quiet space room. We reserved our cafeteria and put on a movie so that families that had students in need of an area with less stimulation could go and hang out as long as they needed. Um, we also opened our doors a little early for families that wanted to have the carnival experience without all of the crowds. Um, we want everyone at Bernie to feel that they are welcome and will be able to enjoy every event. Um, it makes me and the rest of my PTA board so happy to see these practices being implemented through CPAC. Um, we are committed to partnering with our um, CPAC chair who's fabulous, Daisy Leon. Um, to make our all of our events going forward more inclusive for all. Um, last year we just to continue the

community part of what my goal is, we started including RUHS students um that need volunteer hours like in Key Club and JOTC in some of our events. They help set up, clean up, and kind of help things move along at each event. And um I just love when they're there because they're such hard workers, but also it just um further encourages that sense of community within the district having the high schoolers there at an elementary event. Um, so just to wrap up, um, I just want to say how proud I am of Bernie and, um, what we're doing there as a PTA. Um, our parents love the school. They're investing in the school to make it even better. Um, so anyway, thank you to the school board and for your support and for giving me

a little time to share. Um, have a great night and thank you. >> Thank you so much for sharing. Uh, Ronaldo Beach Educational Foundation, any superintendent comments? The only comment I wanted to make um is that we do have board policy that gives our staff priority in terms of um district um permits. So that um as Mr. Barnhart said, staff members do have that privilege of having their children come to school in the district in which they work. So, it's nice to see that. And siblings have the second priority in case anyone's wondering. >> Thank you. >> Brings us to our consent calendar. Would anyone like to pull any items of the consent calendar for additional discussion? >> Yes, please. May I pull 10.9, 10.10, and 10.11, please? There >> any other items anyone would

like to pull? Is there a motion to approve items 10.1 through 10.8 and 10.12 through 10.15? >> So moved. >> Second. >> All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? That brings us to item 10.9. >> Thank you. >> Motion and a second. >> Thank you. Thank you. Uh 10 item 10.9 um has a resolution in front of us um us to pass. It's uh National American African-American History Month uh this upcoming month, February 2026. I'd like to read just a couple of paragraphs uh in the resolution here emphasizing what what it is that we're asked to do this evening. Many African-Americans have played key roles in the history of our nation, frequently overcoming great a adversity to do so. And the study of prominent African-Americans provides students with the valuable role models and

a deeper understanding that America's strength lies in the diversity of its people. and the Rudona Beach Unified School District joins in support with all people of the community to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to honor the contributions African-Americans have made to our community, city, state, and nation. Thank you. >> All those in favor, any other questions or comments? All those in favor of adopting resolution R25-2620 recognizing February 2026 as National African-American History Month? I >> I >> any nos or abstensions? >> Motion passes. Uh up next motion and second please to be in discussion on adopting resolution R252621 recognizing February 2026 as career and technical education month. >> Mr. Ch. >> Thank you. The res resolution uh in front of us to adopt this evening again uh one of the items is

the um recognizing career and technical education month in February 2026. It reads, "Career and technical education provides students with career exploration opportunities which enables them to make informed and beneficial decisions about their academic coursework as well as pursuit of established programs of study and career pathways. It also says career and technical education offers individuals individuals lifelong opportunities to learn new skills which provides them with career choices and therefore we are asked to adopt this resolution um recognizing February 2026 as career and technical education month. Thank you. >> Any other questions or comments? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. Uh motion and a second, please to discuss item 10.11, adopt resolution R25-26, colon 22, recognizing February 2nd through 6, 2026 as National School Counseling Week. >> So moved. Second, >> Mr.

Cho. Thank you. uh as we all know how important it is um the work our school counselors do and and and just simple recognition of that awesome work and important work uh that's being performed everywhere but particularly at our school district. It reads, "School counselors work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves. And school counselors seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society. and comprehensive developmental school counseling programs are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school. Thank you. >> Thank you. Any other questions or comments? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. This brings us

to our action items. Items included in section 12 are considered to be in addition to the general consent items in section 10. Each item has a need for discussion andor action. Starting with item 12.1, approve change order request for South Bay adult school multi-purpose room project. Motion to second to begin discussion, please. >> I really do hope this is the last. >> We can we can have Dr. Nick do all these again if you want. >> Um, we're almost done. We're almost we're at the almost at the finish line. The South Bay Adult School Multi-purpose room project. um went over budget for um the geotechnical um inspections and geotechnical testing. It was a result of finding things in the um in the construction that were not on the asbuild plans. So they provided one quote,

then they, you know, as they're demoing the building, they're discovering things that were not in the the asbuilt. Um, so it required them to do more work. It was the work was authorized and now we're coming to you to approve the additional um amount of 27,464.50. >> Is this work related at all to the trenching that was done that had Englewood Avenue down to one lane? Because I know I got a lot of questions about that. >> About the trenching? >> Yes. >> Not specifically. Okay. No, >> that's not our trenching. It was our trenching. >> Yes, >> we can find out about the trenching. >> I was just curious if that's what was this hold up or >> No, I think this was earlier. >> Okay. >> Work. >> Thank you. Any other questions

or comments? >> All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? >> Motion passes. Motion and a second, please, to begin discussion on 12.2 to approve bid award to low bidder arrow for serving counters at Adams and Paris middle schools >> move >> Dr. Albert >> middle school cafeterias are getting new serving counters. Um we um we went out for informal bids and um we received the the lowest quote um was was for $29,285.90 um for both Adams and Paris cafeterias new serving counters and that's with their um >> installed >> grant funds. Yes, for installation as well. Product and installation. >> Okay. >> Any questions or comments? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. >> Uh motion to second, please for item 12.3, request for reinstatement of student E24-25 col02.

>> So moved. Second. >> And there is no discussion of this. We will just take a vote. All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. Motion in a second, please, to begin discussion on 12.4 approved new RBUSD middle school course for the 2026 27 school year. >> So moved. >> Dr. Garland. >> So, Principal Ma worked really closely with Dr. Toronto to bring this new class to Adams Middle School. um they're really excited about it. So, basically, the students are put in the role of medical investigators and they solve medical unsolved mysteries and they're excited about it. Like I said, the course feeds really nicely into the biomedical pathway at the high school and we recommend that you approve this new course. >> Questions? I know I'm very excited to see, you

know, again, new opportunities for students, uh particularly when it ties into that high school pathway is fantastic. I'm a little late for you guys, but maybe you have some younger siblings who can take advantage of this. Sorry. >> All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. >> Motion in a second, please, to begin discussion item 12.5, approve new Roondo Union High School courses for the 26 27th school year. >> So move. >> Second. >> Anyone have any other questions or comments? I know we had a great presentation earlier and asked a lot of questions. All right, then. All those in favor? >> I. >> Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. >> Motion in a second, please, to begin discussion on item 12.6, approve an increase in the minimum wage per hour. >>

Some moved. >> Second, >> Dr. Stephanie. >> All right. On January 20, sorry, January 1, 2026, the California minimum wage was increased to 1690 per hour. Um and so we had one classification of employees beneath that which was were our student workers. So this would bring their um currently their 1650 per hour would come up to the California minimum wage of $16.990 per hour. Any questions or comments? >> All those in favor? I >> Any abstensions? Motion passes. Motion to second please for item 12.7. Approve increase range placement for the child nutrition services lead. Dr. Stephanie. >> So, we have two child nutrition services leads in the district, uh, both at Adams Middle School, and this, um, item creates a, uh, 5% salary increase for them. Creates a range for a 5% salary increase. Um,

and these funds are coming from the child nutrition services fund. >> Any questions or comments? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. Motion and second, please. Please for item 12.8 approve the 202526 benefit rates for certificated employees. Second, >> Dr. Stephanie. >> All right. So 12.8, 12.9, and 12.10 are all basically the same item just for different um employee groups with basically these are the insurance benefit contributions that the district will make and the employees will make um if they if the employees are carrying benefits through the district this year. >> And these were all reached through the collective agreements. >> That's correct. >> Excellent. Any questions or comments? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. >> Motion is second, please. On 12.9, approve the 2025 2026

benefit rates for classified employees. >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any questions for this one? All those in favor? >> I. Any abstensions? Motion passes. Motion to second, please, for 12.10 approve the 2526 benefit rates for non-represented employees. So moved. >> Second. >> Any questions or comments for this one? All those in favor? I. Any nos or abstensions? Motion passes. Motion in a second, please, to begin discussion item 12.11, approve letter address to Mayor Jim Light and members of the Rona Beach City Council regarding request for city charter amendment. Anyone want to make a motion? >> Anyone want a second? I'll second it, I guess. Uh, all right. U, so I don't know if anyone >> I have a I have a question. Um, this one doesn't have a budget um impact on it because

I think we were looking into it. Did we get any information about what the budget impact might be? >> Yes. So I did have an opportunity to conf figureure that out this morning and so be confident on whether or not the city was going to put anything on the June election because that substantially changes the cost. Um had they put something on and previously when they've had an amendment that we've piggybacked on then the cost is about $80,000. But I've confirmed that um it appears that they would not be putting anything on the June election. and therefore that we would not have that piggyback. So it'd be $37,000 to do it in uh on the June election, which this letter indicates. Um if the board decided they wanted to move forward at a different date

and the city was also putting something on the um on the ballot, again, they're not ready to decide when that would be. they have interest in doing, but they're not sure when, then it would be 80,000. So to do it without the city would be 307,000. >> Okay. Well, being the only board member that'll be turned out, I just feel like I need to say something for the record that regardless of the outcome of this item for it was put up on the ballot, I'm not I would not run for a third term on the school board. So, I feel like it's important that um it's been a complete privilege to serve on this board and I will never stop supporting publication uh public education. If this were to be put on the ballot and

to be um put out to residents and they did it, I wouldn't run. I do think voters should have the opportunity to weigh on on things as much as they can, but in good conscience at that cost. Given our fiscal challenges that we have, I cannot possibly vote to support sending this letter to the mayor or putting it on the ballot. I'm just one of five. And from a legislative uh perspective too, there is some talk um from a city council member at one of their previous meetings of some type of joint measure or things like that. Um so yeah, I would certainly agree with when we're already deficit spending. That's an exorbitant amount to uh put that question before the voters. So I would not support um moving forward at this time as well.

Didn't we already put this on the ballot or a board put this on the ballot before with the city to expand term limits? >> They were separate initiatives. I think it was 2014. >> Um, so they I think they were both to extend to three terms, but they were separate ballot measures. >> Okay. And neither one passed back then. I I do have a question um here for all of us to ponder. If the timing was not an issue, is this something you would want to entertain discussing further? Here's what I would say. Um I I'm we're all aware of the fact that what happened when we when there was uh an item action item for the voters to vote on back in 2014, that was nearly 12 years ago. And I would say where

this city is and particularly where a school district is, it's a very different world. Um so I think that reality also need to be um considered when we make decisions surrounding u this particular topic. >> I think we would really need to figure out what our cost point is. Um because if the city's already having the the an election, they're already paying for it. Correct. It's not costing them extra to put term limits on the ballot. Whereas for us, it's a whole separate charge. And so >> they have to pay either way if they're putting something on a ballot. >> Is it per >> Yes. Yes. >> Okay. So, so why is there such a huge cost difference then? whether we put one on or not >> if timing. >> So if we were on

the June ballot, there would be a special ballot just for Roondo Beach because that measure would be local versus Okay. >> So once they have a Roondo Beach ballot, we're just adding to it. If we're the only thing on the the June Roondo Beach ballot, we shoulder the full cost. >> Okay. If we do it when they have a ballot coming up anyway, we think it's closer to 80. Yes. >> Yes. >> Okay. I I just don't see how we can justify the difference. >> I I would agree with that. Um Sorry. >> No, no. I was just going to say when we had this initial discussion about the term limits, obviously the the cost of the election, um that's a huge difference in what we just learned tonight or today. So, um, with what

we want to spend for our students, our staff, I at this point, I I would not support sending this letter forward to Mayor Light. I think that cost is not something that I want us to spend money on. Um, obviously down the road, um, if the budget looked better and and our cost is back to what we had initially thought, which was more closer to the 80,000 perhaps at that time. Yes. >> Yeah. a board member Cho's point. I think all the reasons for this um for an additional term still make sense, the stability, um the investment um you know, the representation at statewide offices like CSBA and others. Um but yeah, given given the cost, um I I wouldn't consider it at this time. >> Okay. So, I will I'll hold the letter um

because um it can always be sent in the future with a different ballot date. Um, and at this time we will not move forward. And I think do you have to call a vote? >> Yeah. So there's still a motion to approve the letter. So all those in favor and this is a motion to send it forward. Yeah. All those in favor? >> All those opposed? No. >> Any abstensions? >> Okay. So yeah, we will not continue at this time. >> Officially not move forward. >> Yes. >> But I do have a draft of the letter. >> Yeah. And again to board member Cho's point, this is something we can discuss in the future when the costs and situation change. Moving on to item 13.1, unofficial attendance and enrollment reports. Uh Dr. Alurn maybe Thank

you. >> So, I'm pleased to report that for every day in December, as a comparison from yearover-year, we had better attendance for every day in December. Yay. This is the model um chart that I would like to be showing every every month. But um we really did great in December and I hope with um the flu and other things going around um that we're able to report positive news for January as well. >> Thank you. Any questions or comments? >> That is great. Um you know, >> attendance attendance matters. students do better in classrooms than uh at home when it comes to learning. So happy to see that going up. Thank you. >> Uh there are no discussion items tonight which brings us to our announcements and communications starting with board member reports. Board member

Archer. >> Hi. No, no report, just a happy new year and to all of our students at RUHS. Finish strong this first semester as you head into finals um the rest of this week. >> Thank you. Board member Silverman Neimoth. >> Uh we had a SCROCK board meeting this past week and despite myself, I have to say I'm really enjoying um the the uh the SCROCK experience. I think they have an amazing uh team um including Brienne Nakayyama. Um, and we got to hear from some students this week um that are in the uh certified medical assistant program, which was hugely impressive um as to what kind of jobs they can get out there and um I'll keep you updated. >> Uh board clerk Flynn, >> no report. Thank you. >> Uh board vice president

Joe. >> Thank you. I'll make up for all of you and um and please bear with me. I do have a bit of a a longer report. Um we celebrated a special birthday recently. Yes, mine was about a week ago, >> but the old jokes aside, it was Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 97th birthday. Um we celebrated yesterday. You guys were home enjoying the day. Actually, it's a January 15th. So, I get to celebrate his birthday every year along with mine just a couple of days apart. I attended a celebration event yesterday with number of AP African-American study students uh from our union high school uh where they attended and spoke and and I was very very proud of them how um how just amazing young people that were we're were educating among in

the audience were the teacher Miss Amller principal Brown Dr. Wesley among many community members. I was deeply deeply moved by the music, poetry, speeches and the visual images yesterday and opportunity to reflect upon what this his birthday uh means to me personally last night. The phrase all men are created equal is the central tenant of the United States Declaration of Independence appearing its preamble as a self-evident truth invoked in Dr. King's I have a dream speech 1963 and its moral cornerstone of the civil rights movement. The dedicated work of Reverend Dr. King and other civil rights movement leaders such as his wife Ka Scott King and John Lewis have resulted in someone like me serving in my current capacity as a proud school board member of the best school district in Southern California. I'm a

first generation immigrant from Korea coming to this country at age at the age of 17. I came to this country with my motherlands theanming 5,000 year history customs proverbs values and traditions very different from those of this generation I might add but focusing back to our founders of this nation and Dr. King's work. Let's remember that it says all men and I would say all men and women are created equal. Furthermore, Declaration of Independence also states life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And these are unalienable rights to all in this country. While the constitution guarantees rights, the declaration penned by Thomas Jefferson expresses a philosophical ideal that government exist to protect these inherent rights, including the freedom to seek personal fulfillment. What does that mean? I along with my family live in the best

town called Redando Beach in Los Angeles County in Greystead of California in the United States of America. It reminds me of how fortunate I am and my family are to live here while enjoying liberty in pursuit of happiness. Again, life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Because all men and women and everybody in between are created equal. What does this mean to me? Well, I am to serve others, appreciate everyone's unique gifts, and treat everyone, I mean everyone, with respect and gratitude. and listen more in collaboration and celebrate our differences that make our lives and this nation so much richer. And I do so in our collective effort doing what is best for all of our 9500 students in our district every day. And I thank you once again for letting me serve in my capacity.

Once again, I'm honored to serve. Thank you. >> Thank you. Um, just a few things. Good luck to all of our students in finals. Uh, one of the things I wanted to share is I've been going to some of the PTSA meetings and hearing feedback particularly from the high school. Uh, one of the big things I keep getting asked about is why doesn't our semester break align with winter break? Because it really does negatively impact students particularly with sports and I see nods from our students in the crowd. Um, you know, other school districts, they've solved this problem and we haven't. And so trying to uh attend a city uh a meeting like this when you've got finals or when you've got sports tournaments or things like that during finals weeks, it's it's puts our

students at a big disadvantage. So I know there's significant logistical challenges to it. Um how do you do it with, you know, there there's a lot that goes into that. Um but that might be something for us to look at in the future as well to to figure out how can we, you know, make this better for students um while also making it equitable for everyone else as well. Uh another thing that comes up a lot is grading. uh and grading equity. So, I really appreciate the secondary grading committee tackling this problem because it's not easy. Um it's not about making grading easy for students. It's about making it fair and equitable and really reflecting, you know, consistency across. So, there's again going to be a lot of work there. Um that's not going to

be easy, but I appreciate everyone tackling that because at the end of the day, it's going to help our students and that's really important. Um so, those are kind of the big things feedback I've been hearing. Uh other things to share on the legislative side, our boys cross country team is at city council being honored tonight. Uh, good for them. Um, city council is also discussing floor area ratios for public institutional. There's u, we've previously sent a letter to them. Um, they are still discussing having a lower floor area ratio for every property in the city that they don't use. Um, although they want to give themselves a higher floor area ratio on cities they are property they lease from us. So, there's still some equity issues there I think need to be addressed. Um,

that may be something we discuss in the future. But other than that, this is our first meeting since the new year. a happy new year for everyone and we got to get you students home as quickly as possible. So that is everything I have for right now. Uh coming up to calendar of events, January 19th was a holiday non-working day, uh non- studentent day because it was MLK day. January 23rd, quarter 2 ends for middle school and high schools. Good luck with finals. January 26 is semester break. It's a non- studentent day. Um it is a teacher professional development day. February 10th is a regular board of education meeting. will be right here at 5:30 p.m. February 13th is a holiday nonwork non- studentent day. It's a local holiday and February 16th is a holiday

nonwork non- studentent day as it is President's Day. Um these events, activities, announcements are available on the website at rbusd.org. And with that, is there a motion to adjurnn? >> So move second. >> All those in favor? I >> we are adjourned at 7:19.
