003unanimous vote moving on to reports to the board we're starting with mirabaska on Washington Elementary thank you so thank you for allowing Washington to be here today to present we have a very special presentation some very special students that will carry that out we know at Washington we wanted to highlight our student leadership program we know that developing leadership skills as early as Elementary School is very important so we take that seriously and we have some wonderful advisors that are helping us through that we're honored to support our young leaders in developing their leadership skills we currently have 30 students in the Washington leadership program the programs led by our two incredible leadership advisors Mrs masqueda who's our school counselor and Mrs pennings who's a fourth grade teacher good evening I'm Paige Mosqueda and this

004is Carrie pennings and as previously mentioned we are the advisors for Washington's student leadership program we just want to thank you in advance for your time and for giving our lovely student leadership Representatives this opportunity to share with you some of their great experiences this year in our student leadership program thank you so much all right and with that I'd like to introduce our three wonderful leaders so Henry he's in year one of student leadership Tyler he's also first year student leadership and Caitlin is year two so with that I'll invite Tyler to come on up and present a little bit about student leadership Washington Student leadership is a group of fourth and fifth grade students that have been specially selected to play an important role at our school As Leaders we focus on three

005important areas these areas are developing ourselves as positive leaders helping our school to be a fun and supportive place to learn and giving back to our community leadership skills in leadership we hope to show other kids how to behave and act we like to promote good behavior and recognize good students one way we do this is by handing out a support cash explore cash is a currency our school uses to reward students for good behavior you can spin the Explorer cash on prizes that are offered by the school student leaders call themselves cash ambassadors and we hand out cash to kids we feel are being kind and following the rules student leadership helps us become better public speakers for example we make announcements to the school and talk about what we are doing to help

006the school as a whole student leadership has personally helped me become more involved in my community and school we do projects and presentations which help us become more hard-working as student leaders we like to lead by example and show other kids what it takes to be a leader Washington Student leaders help the school and students with fun events some examples of this are start with hello week Red Ribbon Week El Ribbon Week and garden assistance a project that is currently being taken place at the school is Operation butterfly when it is completed a butterfly school will be planned for the entire school to enjoy foreign the last important part of the Washington Student leadership program is understanding the importance of giving back to the community a project we led the school year was in partnership

007with the Redondo Beach Fire Department called the spark of love toy drive we collected many toys to give to Kids in Need during the holiday season during this experience we learned to be in other people's shoes and help them do you have any questions so thank you so much I I just want to say you guys your public speaking is amazing so if that's one of the things you've learned then it's not easy sitting in front of people right but I give you a lot of credit for standing up there and speaking to us so how does one get involved in student leadership at Washington it's for fourth and fifth graders but is it elected do you volunteer how does that work um you fill out a form and then the teachers decide on who

008should be and based on like how they act in school the teachers decide and you get everybody gets another chance in fifth grade if you try it in fourth grade yes okay and I'm from each of you which is your favorite thing about being part a part of esteem leadership in Washington um just being able to be involved in the community and helping like give out toys to kids in need my favorite thing is getting to hand out cash to kids who are following the rules and being good cash to board members is good too my favorite part about student leader is helping the community and students in school fantastic so the quick question you guys are fantastic up here love seeing you know our students thriving like this I guess one of the questions

009I have though is around being involved in your school do you get to give feedback on you know do you learn how our schools work and then give feedback on how things we could do better or you know suggestions for us because our schools are for you so we always love hearing from our students um I don't really know about that but that's totally fair as well thank you hi I'm new it's my first meeting and as the board pres Board of Vice President acknowledged your public speaking skills are wonderful I'm so proud of you as you may know uh I have three kids two of them went to Washington I still have one there just so proud of you uh and thank you for teachers staff and supporting this program both of my kids

010have went through this program they're great so thank you we're just so proud of you you guys are all fourth grade all fifth okay so you're all fifth yeah you guys gonna do it when you go into Middle School too there's a leadership thing there are you signing up for that and probably did any of you do student council too I don't think we have that at our school this is this is our student leadership that is your student version okay didn't know that were you nervous coming here yes because I it's really weird up here you don't get so nervous but behind that Podium it's kind of like a scary place but you guys did awesome and just step right up to that microphone and that's what it takes and if that's what like

011um about the board member said if that's a key thing you're learning here that is so important to be able to speak comfortably in public keep your thoughts organized I'm glad you had notes because that helps when you're first doing it I still do that and but learning that alone is really awesome and I like the idea of giving out money to the kids that are doing the right things too who gives you that money where do you get that money um the student leader advisors how much do you give five dollars during morning exercise and then I think like three dollars like just throughout the week that's an awesome idea I bet the kids love it too all right good job guys thank you okay dude do you guys want to introduce your families

012uh my mom is over there my mom and my sister are over there and dad and sister Courtney are here as well [Applause] see the parents are right there okay now moving on we're going to have Dr Wilds on presentation on the World Language textbook adoption for secondary courses you got it so it's super exciting to present after three uh fourth and fifth graders um who are that articulate but I'll see what I can do so and exactly so tonight we wanted to provide a quick update to the board on the rbusd secondary secondary schools World Language textbook adoption process so a little window into our committee our committee composed our Redondo Union High School World Language Department we wanted to make sure that the entirety of the department was involved as well as the

013Paris and Adams Middle School teachers when you adopt World Language you are looking at a very very specialized credential so we wanted to make sure all of our teachers who were credentialed in Spanish World languages French World languages as well as our Chinese World languages were represented we also had our dual language specialist Mr Roy Lopez Jr our teacher on special assignment and then we had Administration so we wanted to give you a little update just a little overview of everything that we reviewed you will notice that there are only two from Chinese they're just less Chinese Publishers available than there are in Spanish and French and so these um all of these Publishers were really the core of what we spent our time this spring examining and the in-depth review that was conducted I

014won't even begin to try to read them and pronounce them to you because I know that I will screw them up but we want to this was no small Endeavor each one of these Publishers sent um thousands and thousands and thousands of pages of material that our teachers had to comb through and examine and so we'll talk about that process in just a minute so the adoption committee process actually started before just this year so for those of you who've been on the board a little longer you will remember the sr3 plan that was from October of 2021 and when that chunk of one-time funding came through we convened our lcap stakeholder committee Group which was made up of teachers parents families from dlac families from special education we brought everybody together and we really

015wanted to understand given the umbrella of our district goals really wanted to get input from folks on where we felt we needed to spend some of this these funding and one of the things that came out very clearly during that meeting back in October of 2021 is that we had not had New World Language textbooks um since before my children were born in 2007 and so that was really something that came through from many of our teachers as well as our stakeholders from our district English Language Art District English language advisory committee so on October 26 2021 I did a presentation on sr3 the xr3 expenditure plan and that the board adopted so we had another big adoption during that time that's the English language arts in elementary and so now that that was put

016together put to bed then we started in October with our world language the the first thing that the World Language departments did is we really just did what do we currently have what are what have we been using what has been working with students where are our instructional needs the teachers conducted a thorough study of the California World Language framework and the world languages standards for California public schools and they are very very different than your common core reading Ela and we'll talk about that in just a minute then the T we did an in-depth study of what is already on the California adopted list and what are other Publishers that we'd like to take a look at and the teachers identified all the available Publishers as well as the text that they wanted to

017review and then we spent a lot of time sourcing out samples so um and full sets for teachers to really do a thorough analysis in a study fast forward into March our teachers met and they conducted a thorough study and review of all of the publisher materials using a standardized evaluation tool on this using a standardized evaluation tool is really important when we look at a variety of Publishers because you really want to be focused around what's important instructionally because oftentimes when we look at materials you can often be swayed by who's providing this for free who's throwing this in maybe how it's packaged but we really want to look at the content so in order to cons be considered for adoption each one of the materials on the previous slide had to have met

018evaluation criteria and this was as indicated on the world languages instructional materials evaluation tool and this was a tool this was a rubric teachers could score on each subcategory on a scale of zero to three and they would have not these were non-negotiables materials had to meet meeting standards in all of these areas the first category was alignment to the World Language standards and the World Language standards are really broken down into three big categories the first one being communication second one being cultures and the third one being connections they then evaluated all the materials looking at how the programs were organized how they handled and tackled assessment what would that look like for students we wanted to look at the materials in terms of access and Equity how do the materials support diverse Learners

019students with special needs students who are English language Learners were those supports in the materials and then we wanted to look at the usability the instructional planning and the support those were in the teacher material guides so the adoption committee will be at the next board meeting will be recommending the following publishers and this would be an adoption of the textbooks an adoption always we look at for eight years this would be for not only hard copy but also digital versions of all the student materials from the following Publishers and we will have for Spanish levels one through four will be Wayside publishing the native speaker courses because we we do have Spanish two through four native speakers would be Colette mapas by klet World languages French one through three will also be Wayside AP

020French will be Wayside and then Chinese one through four as well as AP Chinese and so finally um right before spring break we also sent out a letter to the entire RB USD Community letting them know informing them of our process and letting inviting anyone and everyone who wants to come into the educational services to visit our conference room meet with us and review everything so all of the materials are available for the families and communities to review so thank you so much those materials will stay available up until we up until they'll be available for the next through the May 9th meeting I had a question shout out I saw you had AP French but not AP Spanish AP Spanish we are currently the the materials that we currently have we're just going to

021do the new ones so the publisher and the title is not changing thanks so we will have we have new materials but it's the same publisher and title just the updated version will any of these apply to the Middle School offerings that we have yes so for Spanish watch only Spanish and Chinese we don't offer French we do not get our middle schools no this time okay and just out of curiosity our di students they don't use a Spanish textbook per se do they until they get to middle school or High School in elementary we do have an adopted um an adopted textbook it's a benchmark Adelante and then in the middle schools they use um because it's in their Humanities class so they use TCI which is the Spanish version all Spanish and then

022they just mold into higher level Spanish classes yes depending on how they how they assess into the program do we have any other curriculum that's older than your children um yes um we do um um we are this is what we call the in Educational Services we call this the gift of covid and the gift of covet is one-time funding that we can use on textbooks and so the next um one that we're looking at right now is history social science and so that will be the next big one once we get history social science will be next um we're going to split history social science because obviously the high school um um course texts are a little bit older than what we have shockingly in elementary and Elementary just did I don't know if

023anyone's heard there's a big adoption going on right now in elementary land so we want to we want to kind of phase do a couple phases of History social science next and the reason parents are involved in that Ela adoption and that will probably be in that history social science is um because it's everybody has that class everybody has it yes so I just done the materials themselves so for like AP Spanish where we're just getting newer versions did we evaluate those newer versions as well as this committee evaluate those words there were in the samples that came through there were all materials for the AP Spanish as well perfect thank you you're welcome who was the committee who is the committee the committee was all pretty much the entire world language Department in Redondo

024unified so yeah yeah we had all of our Spanish our Spanish our Chinese our French teachers and then teachers from Paris and Adams as well as dual immersion dual language Specialists and which administrators the administrators myself uh Lisa veal um and um Mr breed Mr Brady was there too okay and then when it started I was hoping this wasn't something the state of California had set up but it is there but there was a very extensive list to choose from there but there is it had to be from that list no it did not and so um the the state of California and any of their adoptive lists is actually usually fairly short um and so there were only Carnegie um klett were on that adopted list and so when we looked at Wayside that

025was an additional in order to adopt something that's not on the state adopted list you have to have your the committee composition has to be people um who are credentialed in that subject area to make that determination and then one of the sites mentioned the 29 column standards that the state set up is that are those mandatory parts of that or is it guidelines the standards are mandatory yeah so we needed to make sure that that when we looked at each one of these pieces of text no matter what the level that it was meeting all of these we they're oftentimes you might find Publishers who are very strong in maybe the communication standards but they may be lacking in the culture um we so we wanted we needed to make sure that they balanced

026all three big areas of the of the language Publishers make that declaration that we meet California standards or do they just about everyone likes to say they meet California standards um but that's they like to say it um you'll remember in the ELA adoption lots of people say they meet standards but there's that range of who actually meets them all right um student board member report Chloe K would thank you uh so just to start whoa sorry board members some of you may have noticed that there was brute Blue bracelets at your seats and those are actually for the rvusd district-wide unity Spirit Week the rbsd young leaders worked very hard to put this together there was actually two here tonight that presented for the Washington Student leaders they were very hard to put this

027together and there's been a lot of participation going on yesterday it was meaning Monday today was inclusion day tomorrow is Unity blue Thursday is decades day and Friday is PJ day so we're excited to be celebrating that um next dance card had their final competition this past weekend and placed second overall so congratulations to them also congratulations to our girls softball team who are Bay League champions for the third year in a row the ruhs PTSA Associated their first annual Seahawk Marketplace this Friday April 28th in this in the ruhs quad from 3 30 to 6 p.m the rehs student creators and entrepreneurs will have a chance to show and sell their items which is a free event for all the communities so be sure to show up and show your support also this Friday

028prom tickets go on sale which is always fun this will be a flash sale where prices are 105 with ASB and 110 without and then finally Adam spring makers Fair will be this Saturday April 29th from 2 to 4 30 p.m at Adams Middle School so come and check out the community event for all featuring all handmade items for sale by Adam students and this is also a free event so be sure to show up for them too thank you thank you Dr Wesley superintendent report yes thank you first I just want to again congratulate biancho and thank you for being your first board meeting so welcome to the Deus um I want to share that um just about everything we do and we're down to Beach Unified School District needs to hit at least

029one of our three targets which is academic achievement social emotional learning and post-secondary post-secondary preparedness and what I'm going to share with you in my report tonight is about the Esports competition that I was able to attend at Redondo at the Redondo Union High School auditorium but it included teams from middle school and high school and the Esports program that we have hits all three of those and so that's what I want to present in my report tonight so this is our second year doing Esports in terms of having a concise cohesive program and it's for our middle school students and our and our high school students and all students are invited to participate rbsds is one of our few districts that does offer it at both the middle school and the high school level

030and has a competition so this year we had 17 middle school teams between the two middle schools and we had six high school teams the whole idea of Esports it's not just preparing for the competition but there are activities that the students also participate in and the idea is to help grow this pipeline of students going into steam type careers and so I talk a little bit about that moving forward but um the students that participated were mainly you can see 50 of them were in sixth grade and then 69 high school students were freshmen or sophomore students so really just trying to increase that pipeline getting our younger students engaged as they try to figure out their career pathways the middle school they did rocket League was the game that they played and competed

031in so there's a description of what that is and that was fun to watch and you'll have a little video clip of that and there's the I'm sorry just to show you you can see the two teams together and then High School it was valorant again as someone who doesn't play video games I learned a lot at the Esports competition but that was another game where students had to it's like playing Capture the Flag but they also have to as I heard the announcers speak they have to learn how to manage their resources in the game when to use them when not to use them how to get them so there's a lot more too than just playing a game and so what happens is there was a five-week round robin at all three sites

032and the winning team from the middle schools the atoms in Paris competed at the Esports competition that we had and then the winning team at height Redondo Union High School played against maracosta's winning team at the competition and so as you can see Paris won Adams won last year so Paris came Adams is ready for a comeback but there's as you can see some audience members who were there cheering on Paris and was very excited about that um and I wanted to show like a little video just to give you a little more insight [Music] foreign [Music] so as you can see it's a high-tech production there the students all had headphones on and they were speaking to each other and coordinating with each other during the competition it was really cool to see and

033we hope to get more participation next year and really the idea it's more than just playing video video games that was the learning that I had and I want everyone else to to realize as well that they are learning the technology they're learning to be able to work with the team communicate etc etc so I think it's important to point out these other skills here's just some some of the game I'm sorry that some of the careers that lead that students can explore and that this career pathway leads to um you know when you think about video games obviously there's coding but think about it in terms of like even a film you have to have people produce the story you have to have people create the characters you have to have artists you have

034to have web designers game testers animators and there's so many different careers that could come from game animation sorry game design and animation and so that's what's exciting about this and I was told I don't know if this is true but I was told that the gaming industry is now becoming more lucrative than the film industry and so so that's something that's okay so that's uh exciting to see that our students are getting a taste of that here um definitely want to thank our coaches take some time they're working with the teams during the the whole five-week period so you have Adam Young and Garrett Smith from our middle schools and then Ben Wakefield is our coach from the high school we don't have a picture because we didn't want to highlight that the other

035team won um against the high school but our our high school team is ready for a comeback next year and we're also trying to encourage Hermosa and Manhattan to send a middle school team so we can compete against them so we'll see if we can get that definitely want to thank our Ed foundation in this report because they because of the support of our parents and Ed Foundation were able to fund this does cost money to provide this to our students so fortunately also the Carrick group provides this entire program and all the other programs that they they provide while the students are preparing for the game I also want to thank it I mean Susanna and her team really took a lot of time to set this up it was a professional real deal

036so hopefully again we'll get more people involved that's the goal and not only do we want to get more people involved we want to get more girls involved so they'll be we'll be actively trying to achieve that goal and that's it for my report Wesley all right moving on to the hearing section members of the audience May address the board on any topic regardless of whether it is listed on the agenda however due to Brown act regulations the board cannot engage in public discussion on items not on the agenda topics not on the agenda which are brought to the board's attention may be investigated by the administration and a report made to the board either publicly or privately at a future meeting comments from visitors shall not exceed three minutes unless the time limit is

037waived by majority of the board the board shall limit the total time for public input on each item to 20 minutes with board consent the president may increase or decrease the time allowed for Public Presentation depending on the topic and the number of persons wishing to be heard I do not have any written requests is there anyone here who has comments or questions regarding an agenda item anybody on a non-agenda item all right we do have a public hearing um so open I'm gonna can I please get a motion and a second to open the public hearing concerning the adoption of the grades 7 to 12 World Language instructional materials sound moved are there any comments regarding this public hearing any questions I think we got them all out May I have a motion second

038to close the public hearing so moved all those in favor say aye aye and the opposed any abstentions student advisory vote the motion passes with a 5-0 vote all right moving on to Communications rbta where it says push I'm sorry hello I'm up yeah okay good afternoon board members Dr Wesley and members of cabinet my name is Marlon land I am a math teacher at Adams and it tosa and the rbta president first I want to congratulate our re-elected board member Ramer and our newly elected board member biancho Raymer we are extremely happy to continue working with you and Beyond we welcome you and express our excitement to have you join the Redondo Beach Board of Education as members of the board and the cabinet you all play a crucial role in shaping the education

042stopgap legislation for synthetic nicotine products and that was passed as well so we are very very excited for both of them and appreciate the countless hours that they have put into trying to do some better things for our children but I want to spend the majority of my time focusing on our diversity equity and inclusion program as you guys I've mentioned before that we have a Dei committee that does a lot of great work and they are head or led by tijin Lou bear she is our Dei committee chair and she works with this committee non-stop they are like a collective body of people that are so passionate and dedicated to the um to just getting the word out there and creating a a diverse and inclusive uh diverse and inclusive environment for our community

051to pcw Contracting Services and they won't actually be installing the shade project that is for the previous item but they will be coordinating um with the um CMAs project so it's you know you have to work in conjunction but primarily this is the site work that is happening at the adult school concurrent with the installation of the shade structure and primarily it's concrete work it's mostly concrete work hence the large dollar figure yeah I'm looking forward to seeing it over 1.3 million dollars that's one of the reasons I wanted to clarify that but as we were touring Lincoln earlier this week or was it yeah that you brought up the point that we have to have geological studies for the installation of these things and I'm looking I'm going well they're fine on the ground

052but they're rusting up on top but wow that'll be fun to see welcome to Big Top to northward I don't need to have an event another one you'll see it you'll see it yeah any other comments or questions all right all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes can I please get a motion in second to begin discussion on item 12.4 did I miss three three 12.3 approved Consulting Services contract with Sandy Pringle Associates second Dr Alpert along with construction we require Department of State architect inspection and that is a Consulting Services contract with Sandy Pringle Associates so they ensure that the architect's plans and the work that is done matches any questions or comments all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student

053advisory vote motion passes can I get a motion and second to begin discussion on 12.4 which is approved Consulting Services contract with Geo adventec geotechnical monitoring and materials testing and inspection services for South Bay Adult School shade project doc Dr alpern okay the last piece of that work is the geotechnical monitoring and materials testing which is you know as I as I when I work with um Fred nail who is our director uh I say to him okay when we have a project this was my big learning when I took this job um it was sometimes we have like three different board meetings with different approvals all connected to the same project so my goal both in working with him but also working with the board was to try to bring as many pieces as

054possible relating to the same project to the board for approval but what that also highlights is number one sticker shock but number two like the various aspects that are involved it's not just like installing a stage structure are there more well you already approved the architect work back when so that was already done but um I think this is it yeah yeah it's amazing how thorough these things are and what how strict those requirements are when we have things like a nuclear gauge you know I assume for Radon and we have a geiger counter that's now required for putting in a shade structure so that's why these projects get so expensive is because there are such strict requirements um it's not because we love Geiger counters it's what we have to do no you're right

055and I I um we talked about this just briefly but um I have in the last number of years been approached by principals um regarding their ptas you know or maybe raising fifty thousand dollars or sixty thousand dollars and wanting to put a shade structure on my campus and um I don't mean to laugh because you know for a lay person one would think that sixty thousand dollars would get you a shade structure and it's especially with inflation it's not even close before covet it was a couple hundred thousand and now you know it's more than that do we have an expected life of the it's mainly the the shade part of it the the sales is there an anticipated life for them I will go back and look I I believe it's somewhere between

05610 and 20 years there's usually those are the things that end up getting pretty ratty after a few years and had to be replaced Department of State architect is less worried about that than they are about the polls and but yes the sales are important as well and we can replace those sales without going through and getting a radiological examination of the ground correct you just have to pay so your approval is requested all right all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes all right 12.5 is approved bid to award to low bidder faradendell's tennis courts for Redondo Union High School tennis courts resurfacing project can I get a motion in second to begin discussion on 12.5 so moved all right this is Dr alpern again yeah

057this is my my final request this evening has to do with the tennis court resource saying at the High School Upper courts and those that will occur assuming your approval tonight will occur after the tennis season ends in May just the upper courts that are on the East the public ones the public ones there's four there six there's six okay okay any other questions or comments all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes 12.6 is a recommendation to adopt the rbusd Arts music and instructional materials discretionary block grant plan part one the first apportionment can I get a motion and second to begin discussion on 12.6 so second all right Dr Wilds that's for me so it's important when we discuss the Arts music and Structural Materials

058discretionary block grant it's a mouthful to make sure to understand it that this is different than proposition 28 this is a one-time Grant this grant allocates funding to leas basically for their five allowable uses the first one is for professional development and instructional materials the second one is obtaining professional development professional aligning materials the second one is professional development and materials to improve School climate third one is developing diverse and culturally relevant multilingual School library book collections the fourth one is operational cost including technology devices and or infrastructure and then the fifth one is covet related costs so at this time Redondo Beach has received our first apportionment um at of the our first apportionment is approximately 2.9 Million Dollars the remaining three million dollars is all is has been held back by the state

059that remaining is pending legislation discussion and the action in this spring as part of the governors May revise so it's unclear as to whether we will get that part that the rest of the money whether we'll get portions of it but we did feel it was important to at least move forward with a plan for what we've already received because what we would like to do as we would like to propose um a lot majority of this funding is for technology that really can't wait we have teacher laptops as well as the next round of student Chromebooks partially funding iPads um and if we can fund it out of here that saves us from the general fund those expenses expenditures being from the general fund so staff recommend you approve this first apportionment plan is

060this something that maybe measure Q covered in the past yes and and do we have any dollars left in measure Q it has all been encumbered so that's why we're doing this so if if we didn't have the block grant we would be looking to General we would be looking for general fund yes um we are um this current staff laptops have just about reached their end of their of their life we know we need um Chromebooks in grades 3 6 and 9 as well as iPads for first graders so and this updates the sound board which I know they've wanted that in the auditorium this does yes and I see 50 000 for the new classes yes there we're gonna talk about next yes okay okay any other questions comments all those in favor

061say aye all right any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes all right next we have 12.7 recommendation to approve new Redondo Union High School course adoptions for 2023-2024 school year can I have a motion in second to begin discussion on 12.7 moved Dr Wilds yes so as a reminder is our practice we regularly evaluate courses and pathway offerings for our students to ensure that we're meeting our student interests Community expectations and state mandates in this particular case we surveyed our families um with the lens of Arts and Music knowing that proposition 28 was overwhelmingly passed back in November we surveyed the community really trying to get a better understanding of what kind of expanded offerings and Visual and Performing Arts would be of interest to our families and our students we convened a

062proposition 28 planning committee who brought together parents teachers administrators thank you Dr Stephanie was on that planning committee as well so that we could do a deep dive into that survey data to really understand and what came out very clearly at the high school level is that our students wanted 21st century Arts and that is right now we have one of the most popular classes um Redondo Union is media arts photography is incredibly important and what we've um we heard loud and clear is that they want 21st century and 21st century looks like game design and gaming animation we also heard clearly that we have such a rich and robust Band program but we do not have strings in Orchestra and so we would like to those three courses are coming to you tonight for

063approval so this brings us strings this brings us strings just at the high school just at the high school okay I was really happy to see that that the game design fits into F and gives more choices to students it does to fulfill their a through G and to get that visual art performing arts and even better is my son who's a first year student in college is taking a game design class so this is really they are not for the faint of heart this is they are very very rich robust courses um and we're bringing it to you pending obviously proposition 28 will be part of the governor's May revise but we don't want to wait until after that to go through the process of approval we'd like to have it in our toolbox

064so that we could move forward once the funding has been approved for that second year class for game design would that be offered in the 2024-25 school year after students students would take game design one and then that would be game design Advance much Advanced game design class again creating a pathway to then support students taking classes at El Camino so we're just planning for the future then we are planning for the future do we have a teacher for this we would um be advertising advertising and it it has to be funded we have to advertise and again this expands our CTE offerings this really um kind of helps um Branch our students out into um careers future careers as well is it expected that someone from current staff or will this be a new

065house this would be new hire proposition 28 requires new hires um 80 of proposition 28 has to be spent on new Staffing with 20 percent um for the stuff the materials um but that's a that's a important piece of proposition 28 so it would be new and does because of CTE does it require an actual teaching credential or is it industry experience and then a CT acquire the CTE certification it's a good question Dr Stephanie it would be a CTE certification okay so it doesn't have to be a teaching credential in place for it it truly is a CTE which you've helped me to learn about quite a bit with that yeah thank you um okay so a new higher and then with that since this is basically a new person that would be handled

066would they handle other things or just this would we offer the course multiple times because I would imagine demand will be yeah we we anticipate um when we wrote um the introduction to business the marketing those classes it was kind of a shot in the dark we didn't know how many kids would be interested we were thinking one or two periods and we filled six um we I'd anticipate this would be something fairly similar um if we opened this up to students I can't imagine we would get less than a couple sections this person also could help us um you know expand photography you know depending on the needs within the school and then with something like this if the individual classes do we mix grades or do we keep it grades separate you can

067mix grades any it could be nine through twelve nine through 12. there's no restriction on that yep which is as great for that fifth class your senior year the options that you have once you've fulfilled all of your graduation requirements so fifth or sixth yep Dr Wesley talks about passion these are passion classes so I've already downloaded these just so we can use them at SoCal rock yeah sure yeah we'll tell them you're welcome reading through that you were you hit it dead on these are robust this is not sit and play games this is yes no some serious content yeah and we'll take somebody from industry that you know really grasped that and yeah would the strings be a new hire for orchestra um yeah we're no but this is we say new hire

068it can also be expanding so if we have a teacher who's currently like at a 60 we could increase that's still considered a new hire yes so do we have to build a bigger Orchestra pit for the plays that would be a good problem to have you wouldn't know we were missing that from the last play no I didn't I didn't remember seeing it but I didn't particularly look for it are there any prerequisites for the game design no if you're coming in as a ninth grader nope you can do it you can do it yeah if you've already mastered the unity 3D engine fantastic but uh otherwise yes you'll be good I mean how much mass is involved I don't know I don't know there's a lot of art so there's a lot of

069Visual and Performing Arts a lot of media literacy um that's in that students will learn in these classes and you said 28 could be used for 20. so it's an 80 20. um in proposition 28 as it is right now could be pending legislation the requirement is that 80 of the funds that a School receives has to be on Personnel new personnel so the 20 are we going to be buying new gaming computers to go with this we will we did yeah but again um yeah it's this isn't a Chromebook kind of um design so we would have to look at some Hardware thank you for this my fifth graders already asked for an 1800 gaming computer yep one thing we may want to be careful about too is the materials for this are going

070to change very rapidly yes so it's not like we'll be able to use material from before our kids were born for teaching game design so yeah pong doesn't cover it anymore yeah it'll move a little rapidly but yes that's a good thing yeah okay all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes all right 12.8 is approval of the revised Human Resources Analyst job description can I please get a motion and second to begin discussion on 12.8 so moved Dr Stephanie all right now as interesting as game design but we are trying to revise the human resources Analyst job description to reflect the currents and turn it into a video game to reflect the current demands on human resources um there's nobody currently in that role but we

071are looking to fill it in the near future and we need to revise the job description in order to do that any comments or questions so if if it's approved then it would be flown I mean because it's a job that doesn't already exist so it's a brand new position okay all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes all right 12.9 approve the 2023-2024 dates hours and location for regular meetings of the Redondo Beach Unified School District Board of Education can I get a motion in second to begin discussion on 12.9 so moved Dr Wesley yes so at the reorganization meeting um we need to uh review and approve the dates for the upcoming board meetings for the 23-24 school year which happens after July 1 and

072a couple things I want to note based on a board member's request and feedback you'll see that the recommended beginning time of board meetings starting with the July 25th Board of meeting would be 5 30 pm and um the idea is that prior to covid we did have later board meetings so in order to accommodate families or parents or audience members that wanted to come so that needs to be noted there's the same amount of board meetings on this list here as there are currently but you'll notice that the April 30th is a week later that's due to Passover and you'll also notice that we added a board meeting in August but reduced one in January and that helps us with hiring and Staffing and then in January just because we come back so late

073we're not able to fit in that second Tuesday of the month board meeting in time for a board meeting so that's why you'll see the dates as they are is there any um I mean we obviously can call special meeting of the board at any time in addition to these but is there any need for an earlier April meeting just to be standing on the books so that when we have another election we won't have to call a special meeting to sign this where those folks in so we thought of that but there's no election next year but there will be the following year so if so but we'll have to but the following year will be different because we'll have a new school calendar and we'll approve the dates I see so so this

074is because of the way the school calendar is for 20. we don't have a 24-25 school year calendar yet got it but and we only and we don't know meeting in April and also Passover will change we'll change on lunar calendar so and because of spring break it didn't work in terms of the the planning that Dr Wesley has to do with staff and then preparing for the meeting okay sort of an odd year in terms of when board meetings fall so I also want to note that there is a bylaw 9320 um bylaw 9320 does indicate that the board shall hold two regular meetings each month unless otherwise noted and regular meetings will be held at 5 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at the district admin unless otherwise posted

075in accordance with open meeting laws and I think there was a second bylaw that talked that addressed the closing time of the meeting for extension there I don't remember which one is both I need to grab my books too thank you I think it's the same bylaw 8320 9320 I mean 93 20. page 58. if we amend one we need to amend the second one too because it ties together with the total experience I think they're in the same one it's page 58. yeah I'm looking it starts on 58. 58 says the five o'clock time isn't this though unless otherwise posted in accordance with open meeting laws if we vote on 12 point nine watering nine as as written is that count as posting for open meeting laws without an amendment because we're also not

076holding two regular meetings each month unless otherwise noted and we're not that's true correct I think that and when we did this live month but I read this to be we just have to post it yeah more than happy to revise um by a lot 90 through 20 and bring it back for approval and next board meeting as well that would be the I think the right thing yeah if the board is we also if you're doing that will you take a look at the teleconferencing and make sure that it is adopting the as of January new rules for teleconferencing that requires this adopted since this was last approved well in 2021 yes so no there's that new legislation yeah we just saw it yes before we go into amending and changing the the pretty

077bylaws that we just got but beyond that um I just want to hear and we can bring back 9320 to correct it for the future but as it stands 12.9 I don't believe there's anything wrong with 12.9 in terms of taking a vote on it today no it would this would be for cleaning it up for yeah it's all in compliance it's just we can clean up the board policy later right by law right so I I would because I would say if we vote on 12.9 as it is we post it and then we bring back 9320 and the other ones as soon as we find it when we decide to do our well we would I would bring it back to you probably the next board meeting definitely before the end of June

078because we have to be have it before our first July 25th meeting okay um any other comments so all those in favor say aye aye aye any opposed any abstentions student advisory vote motion passes all right that was the hard stuff moving on to information items Dr alpern I just wanted to congratulate our students for improving attendance and their parents for supporting them and our staff for really encouraging the importance of attendance and improved learning that occurs as a result of improved attendance so you can see the bluish purple line is our current year attendance during the month of March and then more the fuchsia color was last year's um and the a references Fridays so so what you see um you know we kind of talked about this amongst our our management staff is

079that um societal changes and you know in the workforce people do a lot of work Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday and Mondays and Fridays have become a little less sure or a little less certain both in the private sector and in the public sector and so we see attendance lesser less consistent attendance both among staff as well as student attendance on Mondays and Fridays but overall improved attendance and definitely improved then benefit for us as a school district financially all right discussion items Redondo Beach Unified School District and Redondo Beach City Charter I believe Mr stratzenberg that you requested this on the agenda so I'll turn it to you to start thank you and I did request this it was actually a request me passing it on from the charter review advisory committee of the city

080of Redondo Beach they had prior back in November and coming up in November we gave a first report to the city part of that report was the the charter reviewed committee had voted six to one to amend the charter to change the vote of the school board members from an at-large to a my district or maybe more appropriately called a by trustee area because they can be different from our five districts of council took that to city council City Council considered that and said take it back look at it again let's just take it completely out of the charter so that is where we're at now and in order to do that I made the point that we would want to get the input from the school board as to what are the thoughts from

081the school board as far as doing that and to help understand I want everybody to understand the implications of that there's direct and indirect implications I've taken a look around at other cities there's everything from more extensive descriptions of the school board to not even a mention of it you don't have to have it in the city Charter a couple of the big picture Things Are one for the city is that school districts are getting sued to move to a buy trustee area format as a matter of the the voter Rights Act of California I don't think anyone has successfully defended that yet and a lot of school districts there's a couple of attorneys in particular that are going after this and working with groups to go after uh the school districts to change and

082it's not prescribed by Ed code one way or the other it is simply it is a district choice of what to do but currently because it is prescribed in the city Charter if there were a lawsuit there would the city would be part of that and would be because we can't contradict as a school district the city Charter so that's one thing to consider if you take it out of the charter everything falls to edcope and Ed code covers this the big change would be that the election for school board would move to November like everybody else I don't know if there's any other school board in the state of California that still has a March election or yeah there's it's extremely rare and this is because even the city of Redondo Beach took it

083to um fought getting changed and won in an appeal and as a charter City kept the right to keep the city election in March at that time it's my understanding that the board at that time had requested not to be a part of that to do the November there are multiple options here we can take out we can you know say that the board would like to be taken out completely and just fall to add code one of the things that does happen with that is term limits currently there are term limits in the city Charter if we take it out of the city Charter those would go away under Ed code there is not an inherent term limit but you have the ability to add one again as a school district but it has

084to go to a vote of the people has to be about measure I don't think we can simply School District would have to put that on the ballot to say would you like term limits for your school like we would put a bond measure or something we'd have to figure out when to do that and put it on an election of General cert in that it would it would also probably have to it would follow the Ed code of what election I don't think we could do that under a city election anymore and are you saying that if we don't do that we could be stuck here forever if you win forever hang on not stuck here forever term limits are imposed when people have an election you wouldn't always get re-election you know if

085people wanted you can make an argument and there are many four years there are many school districts don't have term limits yet right school board members that have been on for 30 and 40 years you don't have to choose to run again and also you don't guaranteed to be re-elected okay how does how does staying in the four-year term is would stay the same because it is prescribed in the city Charter now and that stays the same under Ed code so that is that no change to that board member terms are four years no matter what it's just how many four years correct yes and the other shift that I'll get to it's a because we talk about it moves to the November election cycle it's a different four years and there would be a

086transition period because currently we're in March of odd years School Board elections under Ed code fall to November of even years you've got a 20-month gap between those that either you would have to extend the terms of the sitting members for their next Cycles by 20 months or come up with a way to have a truncated segment that would be shorter than four years to make it all but you somehow you need to move your cycle to November of even years from March of odd years this can be done previously chosen to lengthen their terms and then because of the city lawsuit that never had to happen is that correct yes so they extended but it never had to happen yeah 20 months how am I missing you said School Board do you mean city

087council or when the school board initially had looked to wanting to align their elections because all the training you know csba all of that probably extend it would have been to extend but is it really 20 months or is it just instead of a written election in March it's an election in November it's it's a November of even years and the City of Redondo is March of odd years so instead of March of 2025 it would be so April May June July August September October November December you get eight months in the first year so we there won't be a November 2024 election yes that's a new twist because what's come up with the charter Review Committee is we were also looking at the possibility of a City attorney change if this goes to ballot

088in 2024 November it goes to ballot for the change in November of 2024 could it be in effect for the what's happening for the March election would it preclude the March election and there's a very short window of time between the certification of the election I don't think you could make it happen I think you'd still have that March election I don't know or you have to extend it if if it goes on to the November 2024 ballot because that's when people are pulling papers and filing for the March 25 election the three of us should we choose so I I'm happy to answer any questions I can the racially upgrade questions so far I know it's a lot to understand it took me a while to kind of grasp it um all the implications

089of it in general is there a desire by this board to move off of the election cycle is really one of the key questions because we would have that would that would happen if we came out of the city Charter what is and what is it oh yeah okay so do we the district I don't think we pay for anything right now to the city of Redondo Beach to have our elections on their ballot it's precedent I don't know if it was established at some point that that it would be included but we would then have to pay to go on a ballot run by probably I think Los Angeles County yeah yes and then at large election is much less expensive than a trustee election or a district election when I spoke with Eleanor

090to do this even though it's a smaller area because it's smaller and more it requires more management those cost more than an at-large election yeah it's a little more counting and separation yeah in terms of dollars Annette wouldn't know that we'd have to talk about the city from numbers four to five hundred thousand would be my guess so Torrance the Torrance cost was 200 and something and there are much larger cities so we need to look at get some exact costs but I do know there are 121 you would probably know this because you're running the charter Review Committee there are 121 Charter cities in California I'm 28 I believe but they're close enough how many of them have their school districts in their Charter we haven't got a full count on that I just

091took a local survey to see in this or is it it's still in their City Charter yeah and Torrance is more and you know talks more about it then why is Torrance unified paying for their elections just because we have an arrangement with our city or is it and possibly because of the March election and yes that it's Fallen to a precedent that we've just got included in that because it's called out in the charter and it was arranged differently and I didn't I didn't know that Torrance pays for their separately that's great okay I'd like to double check the election cost because the special election we just did the city did in November there was a pretty trivial difference to just add to the no existing November ballot rather than doing the special elections

092what I thought I remembered it was it was much less to just be added to an existing ballot rather than holding their own but I don't remember exactly figure out what it was like the Dynamics have really changed even for the city because it used to be before four four would I forget which a b that made that switch that we fought and won but now Nobody Does it anymore it used to be there's a lot of companies that would help you run your election do the counting you know do and now really the only option is go to County and County doesn't want to do it off cycle County will do it I want to do it in November right right so if we were in a November it's going to be a lot

093less it would be in conjunction with what they were doing right like it's an election that has to happen when we have our November elections it's on the same time yes it would all be stuck on with the president and the whole slate of everything it'd be you know I think last time there were 43 different things plus the judges and all this week become one of those is this something we can negotiate with the city to operate no because the city won't do anything the city doesn't do a November election we'd be going to County so we would share the cost of whatever our Porsche being on that yeah I'm accounting results to the county correct yeah and that's what we need to find out what the cost would be hey did you talk

094to Santa Monica because they're a charter City do they have their school district that Court battle you're talking about no I know there are Charter City I just wonder if their district is part of the charter or not that is a Court battle that is being fought yet in appeal the Santa Monica Malibu school district and it ties in with their because of their entire Charter City because the thing if you're just a regular school district outside of a charter that the there's an agency I don't it's not Lego it's something similar to like that can just come in and say you will switch to a buy trustee area you have to do it that's what they did with Santa Monica Malibu School District Santa Monica Malibu School District pushback says no you can't tell

095us that because we're a charter City this is different from that because here we're talking about should we come out of the charter so a lot of things in the air there are we allowed to have further do we have any time to have further discussions absolutely okay so what are the time constraints of this um I would keep it going because it's on the agenda for the the charter Review Committee meets the fourth Thursday of every month it has been placed on the agenda for the first discussion since it got kicked back from Council to consider taking it out of the charter will be on May 28th I believe it is okay so we'd like to have so we can do some research on actual costs of what this looks can do that yes

096um there will be a cost to do it because the district will then have to pay for its own so do we want Dr Wesley to instruct staff to get us that information or do we want to set up have two board members work together to to try to figure this out for us because it sounds to me at least having just come into this um and for Beyond probably too I don't really know what's going on I need more information yeah uh the charter Review Committee how much oh yes that would be something the school district would have to do on its own but as far as you know looking at other if you want to look at other cities as far as just how they do it is that are you just mainly

097concerned about the cost well no I also want to know if for example does it affect us in terms of the at large versus the district voting what can the city Force us if we stay in the charter can they force us to go to District voting yes we could um the city could sorry I'm wearing multiple hats here right so the city chartered aerobic committee recommended six to one that we go to at-large voting no no by trustee sorry not at large to trustee voting and the council said wait a minute why are we doing this maybe the school district should be out of the charter and send it back to the Charter Review Committee to do more research on what that might look like because we can't just decide to come out of

098the charter that would have to be a vote of the people as well and wouldn't that have to be that vote would that of coming out of the charter would that be a school district cost or a city city cost just like the ones we just did that's all born by the city but in the city in essence can do whatever it wants to but that's not the direction we're headed we wanted to get the input from the school board the school district consider the different aspects of it so the changes are yes cost is one that the district would then have to if it passes every two years if it passed in a vote of the people of Redondo that we came out then we would know the cost for an at-large November November

099even year elections so those that would be a question for Eleanor Manzano who would just talk to Norwalk I guess at um or Los Angeles or even a couple calls to local for the next yes we've got a few things we can look at recommending one is staying in the charter or getting out of the charter that's kind of the big one then beyond that if we decide to stay in the charter are there changes we would want to make to the Charter um and that could be you know any number of things that the charter doesn't include a lot about us it does include some things so those are we could do individual amendments and just tweak the charter while staying under it in my mind though when you look at District base versus

100at-large District base just to me feels like a much more divisive way of setting up you know we have trustees representing some schools and and so now we're kind of competing more for resources some schools have SDC programs some don't it it feels like a much more contentious environment you kind of see that at the city council level too when you've got different divides versus having large positions that just that's been kicked back by Council already saying they don't want to do it not that they don't want to do it just that let's look at it from a different lens and just taking out completely and so that could be a consideration though is that yeah because the original one was to that the charter review a committee advised you know six to one to

101move it to by trustee area uh that is the trend for whatever reasons it is happening I remember when I was teaching attending one of the csba trainings I'd go into breakout groups and they you know this was early on they said oh you just how did you get elected in March and I said well here's the story they said oh okay and you're at larger by District well or by trust here I said well we're at large yeah that won't last long they said there's two kinds there's those that are still those that have already been sued and have switched and those that haven't been sued yet and will change that that yeah currently somebody they could still sue us and Sue the city and the district together and say you've got to change

102this and that to show that we're disenfranchising voters though by being at large in the demographics in the city really don't reflect that at this point and that is the basis of it but in the end it doesn't really I won't say it doesn't matter it's not a deciding factor it's a money grab but one of the things I've seen other districts that have done is they've used a form of ranked Choice voting to specifically show that it empowers every group in the city so there is no minority vote that's stifled so even staying at large there are forms of ranked Choice voting and things like that that also have been used as mitigation measures so there's there's other ways we can look at if we want to so and that's an interesting thing because

103the city just did as one of the charter amendments move to ranked Choice voting but not for a school board no no but we're a district with like what you were saying we have one high school um we represent many other schools districts it seems wrong to me that that one of us would represent essentially the high school but it's kind of yeah half of our population and I get that but it's just like we have one Harbor at the city but the city council all votes together one District member has that Harbor in his district their District I shouldn't it's currently him um so yes and those are all Arguments for consideration that's not necessarily something that would have to happen with this Charter change because let's say we did agree to just take

104the school board out of the charter the key things that would happen we'd have to pay for it we'd move to November of even year and we would no longer have term limits until we the voters and we can't do that concurrently because until we're independent we can't have an election setting term limits is that correct I think that's what could you do them concurrently I suggested they could be done concurrently uh City attorney questioned that I think that's needs to be answered okay a good one to find out yeah because at the time we are still under the charter so yeah one thing that to think about with November elections too is that you know from having all of us campaigned we know that the voter turned out unreasonable election is predominantly people who

105don't even have kids in school at this time so you look at a November election you've got double or triple the turnout of a municipal election with a vote for school board I don't know and that that becomes kind of you know a fair debate of you know because we're on with November with the other 50 things how much it yes attention and focus do we really get is it's like voting for judges at that point I mean I'll I look at the judges I don't know and I'm worried about voting for president and governor and that kind of thing so and that's all part of the things to consider all fair things so so can we bring this back absolutely and I can say that the board is disgusting the start of a discussion

106yes this was not to come back and say Charter Review Committee here's the board's decision on what it is this is purely this discussion um and I can report back yes we talk about it the board has a better understanding now of many things that can be considered one of the considerations we're looking into is what it will cost we would have to figure out how to do the transition [Music] and but the issue of by trustee versus at large I could you know we could that's when we can discuss kind of separately I feel like that's a separate decision um the bigger picture is taken out of the charter and I'd also like to know what we could do if we were taken out of the charter if we could choose say ranked Choice

107voting term limits all those sorts of things what parameters you know does that have to go to a vote of the people can the board just decide what is you know what are the differences I'm sure that's by Ed code yeah and I haven't fully researched the Ed code other than the one thing I did look into is that yes there is a pathway that we can re-implement term limits okay when we're pulled out of the charter we wouldn't have them but we can bring them back in and the question is could it be concurrent that needs to be figured out yet and I've been told we can't do ranked Choice voting if we're not under the charter I need to verify that but something to be aware of I believe yes I believe that's

108well you do priority with running price voting so if you if you there's a there's a video on that is really interesting because the top first round vote getter ends up being dropped off yeah it changes yeah yeah it gets very complicated well not it's complicated okay so where do we go from here do um but I believe it's correct that we we can't do ranked Choice voting outside of the charter yeah Charter cities have the right to do that which Redondo just did yeah but not the school board and the stake has moved to allow that but right now it's not the school districts that are City Charter cities are Santa Monica Torrance Culver City and Long Beach and I am curious about Manhattan Beach and how their School Board elections are handled like

109just be interesting to know even who's the cost of that Santa Monica Torrance Culver City and Long Beach are our closest neighbors Newport Beach as well but I'm not sure that's a um there's a full list I can get you all 100 as a board then we're asking Dr Wesley to Dr elprin to look into the cost that would be so I'm going to call the registrar's office okay at the county we'll find the cost and put that in a Friday update and then we will bring this back to the board for a discussion item and it's simply a discussion until you decide that you want it to be an action item yeah and do we want to get the cost of only an at-large or do we want to look at both costs for

110now yeah I might as well get both understandings by trustee area as well assuming five trustees yeah yeah we have to either do five or seven we're not I wouldn't want to do seven for Redondo we're not big enough I don't know if Edco allows it I think it's a certain number of students that could be I haven't looked into that either so I guess governing so let's put this on the next agenda for a further discussion and see what other information we can get yeah and that's great that's more than enough for me to take back to the committee and we would have it even before the May meeting if we do it on the next agenda we'll have further discussion which would be great uh maybe a little more refined next time you

111know I'm happy to answer any questions like as a board I can't just do it in general offline because of brown act but an open session in Open Session absolutely so that's where it's at but and I would say something will likely happen unless the school district really objects to it which may or may not I don't know yet that's up to the board and by likely happen do you mean that they're going that they want us out or that they're going to change us to trustee it's the out would be that was the direction back from city council but let's just yeah we don't have to have the school board in there it's a bit unwieldy for certain aspects of it um so that could happen at any time like no it requires a

112vote right but it could go to if they don't do it now they could do it correct yes there's no guarantees here that that is correct three years from now City attorney piece went in with the vote on that be from removing from the charter or making appointed versus elected it could either be a special election the city could call or it would be the the last discussion at city council for City attorney would be to move it to the 20 26. okay so removing us from the charter can be 2026 as well it could but we'll still face the same transition all the issues or it could be on a special election too okay if a special election is called you can put multiple things on it those are the possibilities okay well yeah

113this is I mean I understand there's a lot here and a lot to think about the implications of all the different aspects so appreciate the consideration um but I've got enough to take back to and try to review at the the main meeting and we'll have even more if we put it on agenda again right another meeting Thursday too I bet this isn't going to be part of it correct it's not we I specifically asked her to be placed on the agenda in May to give the board time to do that thank you and I well we'll go into that later all right so let's move on then with uh board member reports which Mr strasenberg I'll roll right into that um part of the this Thursday there is my SoCal Rock update is the

114superintendent search continues is making progress we had a meeting Saturday the 15th from 7 45 a.m until 4 35 pm um and that process continues so it's about as much as I can say about it along with that this Thursday evening is the annual night of All-Stars for SoCal rock where we celebrate student achievement we give scholarships also on that evening will be the awards for the real reel competition that SoCal Rock recently did which Redondo had several people in there there's a thousand dollar first prize and I think there's a 500 additional prize for that those will be announced and awarded at the Thursday night meeting so this Thursday I will be at that rather than the charter review advisory committee they just happen to fall concurrently and I decided as I am board

115president it'd be more appropriate to attend the SoCal Rock event it's a big deal yeah it's a great celebration so that's happening this week I'll report back as to who won the real competition and next board meeting is May 8th which we may have a decision on Superintendent at that point I don't know we'll be waiting I will be too Mr Elder so very excited to have gone on a bunch of site visits and seen you know the great things happening in our classrooms and our students excited to be learning and so there's a lot of good stuff going on there Esports was fantastic thank you to Ed foundation for funding that it's great to see these these opportunities our students have and and all the different ways they can do and take advantage of

117really good stuff in there that ab2449 for remote participation it was very good we have to you know work our way around that now but we'll get there but other than that you know it's we're getting closer to the end of the school year so thank you to everyone who's who's in there keeping us going forward and uh you know keeping our students in the Forefront of everything thank you uh Mr Cho your first board report yes ma'am um as board member Elders mentioned I was able to participate in site visits to Jefferson and Washington those are probably the highlights seeing all our students and particularly young younger parts of our students just love to learn and and our teachers and our administrative staff just making sure that it's just a fun learning environment and

118just felt to love the energy I was able to also attend the Esports with Dr Wesley and the staff the the cabinet as well as Mr Elder I had no idea what was involved and I also frankly did not think that was that complicated and I did not understand what goes beyond what it would transpire the old aspects of steam science technology engineering arts and and math all that is encompassed into that whole industry and and the stats that show code our students will go places I I was I was so pleased I was there um and again thanks to the Ed foundation for supporting it and I'd love to see more local schools there um and congrats to all the schools that participated I was fortunate enough to uh does also attend the battle

119of the books uh to held at Madison that were the winner last year so many Book Lovers my kids particularly are numbered Takira she runs into a wall reading books and she's one of those and there's so many young students loving books it was so heartwarming and all eight site leaders our principals were there cheering and everyone was wearing their own school shirts it was it was so awesome the energy the it was just so fantastic as mentioned earlier the Greek day at Adams was whole school just turned into various cities of great culture it was I learned a few things um and the the dedicated teachers that put together and PTA that supported um it was it was just amazing and also attend Earth Day at Washington all things about I didn't realize the

120the vegetarian Taco could be actually tasty it was really good and all different activities I've put on by um our our teachers were Manning the booth as well as parents and participants for the community and Redondo uh Union High School uh Team were there teaching our community members about the acid water impact that has on shell animals in the sea and they then when someone's right in front of me and just things melted away and scare the heck out of me and so we need to do better to love our mother earth um what else um just want to thank you all of you for making my transition as smooth as possible I've been learning a lot I love to learn so it's been great experience and one of the things that they point out

121to me when I watched the uh my um other first meeting was I neglected to thank my family and my wife particularly that got me to do all this and and and taking them even more work as I work as a board member of this great School District so hats off to my family my wife and all the support and also the friends and friends here so thank you thank you Miss Flynn um just real quick I was uh pleased that we had so many members of the Redondo Beach cabinet attend the South Bay Community Coalition against hate they had a speaker at American Martyrs Frank uh Merck okay meaning so uh Munich he was a former skinhead who has reformed himself and goes travels across the country and has talked before a congress regarding

122how he got put into that and how he got out of that and what we can do to prevent that in the future they actually recorded it and have put it on their website so anyone who missed it it's right now on the Manhattan Beach City website you'll see it's the Community Coalition against hate has its own little host there um we Dr Toronto and I went back to another meeting their the Manhattan Beach Unified School District is going to present next time on bystander training that they're implementing to help talk to students about how they can stand up to to hate that they see they may encounter at school so I'll keep you posted on that and I I enjoyed my ruhs visit with Dr Wesley first time with her as superintendent and I

123really appreciate that we have the Student Union open again for students to enjoy for lunch so that happened right after spring break Chloe I don't know if you've been in there yet but um it's really exciting I've seen the emails reminding kids but I mean I'm glad to see that that's happened and it's going to be a whirlwind few weeks until we end up with I cannot believe we're winding down school so thank you everybody for their hard work I don't know where this year went and that is thank you briefly also was at Connie's Cafe at the South Bay adult school and I'm I will encourage everyone to go next time it was so much fun and we walked away we we bought some say what Connie's Cafe is it sounds like I know

124it does um say what it our adult transition program puts on at Connie's Cafe where they sell items they've created themselves and donuts and whatnot and they are all given rules there's a greeter and this year Suzanne has actually given them shirts so they wear uniforms with their names on them and they you know have an opportunity to practice social skills and business and making change and um I I've seen it years and years ago when I worked at South Bay Adult School in that if it used to be one little stand now they had four or five tables it's grown into a an actual event and I think she said they hosted every month or every other month so I think every month and and it was it was lunch time so it was

125crowded and people were on campus and like I'd never really appreciated South Bay and they needed shade I can tell you well they're about to get 1.3 million dollars worth of shade we're gonna have a party there when we build it it will all be under a shade structure so it was nice of Suzanne to include us and um we'll make sure everybody gets a chance to go and get their little succulent we bought succulent plants that you know all the way from the kids putting the dirt and choosing the plants and then having to help you select you know what do you what would you like and and to make the change and everything was really fun to do I also had an opportunity to go to Lincoln on a site visit with Mr

126Brown Dr Wesley and Mr stratzenberg and it was nice to see Mr Brown at at Lincoln and to see all the good things going on there um and then I just wanted to say that I'm amazed every day lately because we've been really busy as a board but this district has so much going on and sometimes I just think we need to take a breath and look and say okay the staff all of you thank you so much because I'm amazed every day at what we're putting on and what we're dealing with so I just didn't want that to go unsaid I know it was a long week so um that's all I have all right well now's the fun part okay now we're moving to organization of the board um the first one is

127to elect a president of the board because I've been acting as the vice president since David left that's a wacky way that our elections also work but we need to nominate a board president so would anyone like to nominate a board member for board president I nominate vice president and Emma okay so do you accept I do accept Mr stratzenberg nominates me any other nominations for board president all right nominations are closed can I get a motion in second to take a vote for nominee one which is me second all those in favor say aye aye any opposed any abstentions and we do not take a student vote on this one I learned that one sorry Chloe and we can't nominate you either um so I have been elected president thank you [Applause] um so

128would anyone like to nominate a board member for vice president to nominate board member Elder I I appreciate the nomination um I don't know that I'm quite ready for that role yet you are [Laughter] um I would Nom and I do appreciate the vote though so are you are you I I will humbly decline thank you though okay I should have made that clear before sorry sorry we could be a substitute motion too that's getting confusing for me anybody else have a nomination for vice president okay nominations are closed can I get a motion and second to take a vote for nominee for Miss Flynn for vice president so moved second all those in favor say aye aye all those opposed abstentions Miss Flynn has been elected vice president [Applause] all right so now presiding

129officer would anybody like to nominate a board member for presiding officer I nominate board member Cho and yes you're ready for it thank you Miss stressenberg I'm not quite afraid you don't do anything if you're not ready for that when I stand in when there's love yeah thank you um I nominate Mr Elder are you ready I think I'm ready for that one all right can I get a motion second to take a vote for Mr Elder for a presiding officer second all right all right all those in favor say aye aye all those opposed abstentions Mr Elder has been elected presiding officer all right um moving on to 16.4 the board appoints a board member to serve as a member of the Board of Education of the Southern California regional Occupational Center well this

130aren't you president I am so that would be interesting in a superintendent search and uh RFP for new Council and so Mr strasenberg would you like to maintain that I I honestly think it's good for the the SoCal Rock board some continuity right now they are going through tremendous amounts of changes and we did just take on three new board members in November or December excuse me so I think it is because of November elections exactly redondo's the one odd one that their board member changes in March [Music] okay so Mr stratzenberg is appointed to SoCal Rock again thank you for all your work with scrock yeah and then we have a board President appoints a board member to serve as a representative of the Board of Education of the beach Cities Health District blue

131zones committee and I know Miss Flynn you have been doing that but I think we should ask Mr Cho if he would like to represent us are you willing to do that yes ma'am great so I'm going to appoint Mr Cho as the representative for Beach Cities Health District blue zones committee and we have a board member to serve as the legislative representative Mr Elder with your new duties as presiding officer can you still act as the ledge representative seeing as how they don't conflict and there's no real-time requirement for presiding officer yes thank you okay so Mr Elder is appointed to serve as the legislative representative thank you [Applause] all right um moving to calendar of events and this is the longest meeting we've had in quite some time um April 27th is open
