Estrada back to the Adams family and we should continue success as well congratulations to you both ah all right let's do Pledge of Allegiance mr. thing [Music] okay approval the agenda for the for today's meeting was approved by I believe mr. Waller and seconded by Miss Flynn I need an approval for the minutes of the May 26 2012 or dove education meeting okay we're gonna do roll call vote just as a reminder for everybody for the entire meeting so we'll start with Raymer Brad hi Mike all right David all right and I for myself so motion carries five to zero moving on to reports to the board I'll start with employees of
the year dr. Nicole Wesley thank you very much normally at this board meeting we would be here honoring our employees of the year live but we will be giving them their certificates and we will be on it we've sent out an email to all of our district employees stating who they are but today I just wanted to share with you a little bit about the employees of the year and our process you may recall that last year we changed our process we do have an Employee of the Year committee and that each site chooses a certificated teacher a CDC teacher and a classified employee of the year and then those three nominations are sent to the committee who then selects the rBST employees of the year and so this year our certificated employee of the
year is Lesley Spain how her she's a teacher at Adams middle school she's a pizza mentor and our BT a rep she's positive responsive to her colleagues needs encourages others to attend optional professional development encourages staff to get involved at the school she has embraced the use of technology and she goes above and beyond the call of duty as a teacher our classified employee of the year is Debbie Daniels from Jefferson Elementary she's the admin assistant there she's also one of our retirees Debbie goes out of her way to make sure all families feel welcomed at Jefferson with a smile and a lot of patience organization and proactive approach makes the teachers and staffs jobs easier she keeps office environment positive and calm and she exudes kindness and the willingness to step in and help
others any way she can our CDC employee of the year is Lou Jean Bullock levy from Jefferson CDC Lou Jean is positive and upbeat every single day no matter what is going on her positive attitude impacts both students and staff she is there to help in any situation Lou Jean loves science and equally loves teaching the subject to our students and in engaging in creative ways we also are honoring our administrator of the year and that's Laura Franco Gallardo Laura is our assistant director of maintenance and operations and she oversees all of our custodial and grounds crew Luers proactive positive progressive and it is because of Laura that we have new and improved sanitation systems at all of our school sites Laura is always looking at creative ways to make sure our schools look good
but also our clean thoroughly so with that we put together this quick video to highlight all of our employees of the year and here we go [Music] I will point out that last year we had 89 nominations any staff member can submit a nomination in this year we had 120 and is really enjoyable reading them all thank you so I the only thing I have is like happy graduation to the class of 2020 I think we all can agree that this is not how we planned this year to go especially for the seniors but I think one of one of the things I've learned these past four years is that our class is very resilient and we rise to the occasion I think we've definitely sacrificed a lot but we've learned a lot as a
class and I think going into this next chapter graduating from high school I think we've just become more aware of the world around us and the importance of connecting with other people and the importance of making connections and making sure those connections last and I've learned a lot about that at the board too so I just want to thank you guys not how I imagined my last board meeting to go I mean I was here for Madison's last board meeting but I'm appreciative of the fact you know that I can sit here and I have you know my plaque with everyone's last name on it but I think that I've had a lot of people come up to me and they've asked like how why did the school board for two years and my response
is it's always where my passion met the greatest need for the student body and it's where you know I was going to be more useful and successful to the representing the student body because you also I mean it was never and I explained this at a PTA meeting once um the position was never about making myself look good or giving myself this star stamp out a college application and I'll tell anyone that you know just this position is not going to get you into Harvard or Stanford it's it's a good culmination of everything but this position for me was about doing my best job of representing the students and you know I only hope I was able to do that as well as Madison did because I was a big shoes to fill but um
I just want to thank you for everything especially given our circumstances and I couldn't have been more proud to you know sit on this board and work with all of you and you know even if like dr. Keller I at a PTA meeting funny story for dr. Keller I told him that being on the board is kind of a full-circle moment because I get to sit next to dr. Keller every school board meeting and um in second grade when I first moved to the district my teacher had told us that this superintendent of schools was going to come in and read us a book and she was like he's she was like he's my boss's boss and I was like oh well that means he's really important that so there I am this second grader
you can ask my mom that I was very much like a short second grader all up until like I was a short kid all up to sophomore year and um in walks this guy who's like I don't even know how soon what are you saying super yeah and I was like I was looking up and I was like I didn't know people could get that time and so he comes in and reads us this book and then ten years later Here I am like sitting on the school board next to him so I think it just shows the the opportunity that this district provides to its students especially with such a supportive staff and teachers that you really allow students to grow and explore their interest and kind of find themselves and find their place
to a point where you know their senior year they kind of felt like they've found their home here at Redondo and you know that you they're prepared to take on whatever their future holds and I know I'm prepared going off my mom's not gonna let him going off to Chicago next year and um she's still like working through it but um I I feel like she's taught me a lot especially as a parent and I think the board has taught me a lot you guys have seen me grow it both as like a person and as an individual because I'm pretty sure I was not this tall when I first started but um just a big thank you to all of you for making you know my last two years just incredible and being able
to serve the students in the best capacity I can so thank you and if you think about it Sergio the full circle is you went from being a kid where the boss's boss came in to being the boss I think that as a board member spectator before I came here and I don't want the last three months to find you or any of our seniors and you know certainly make me feel better about our future generation of us to come I will use this last three months as an excuse when I tell you that everybody on this dais to a gift to you and thank you very much better like anything to say Sergio it's been a real pleasure to work with you over the past two years I wish you all the best in
college and please come back and visit we're always happiness to have anyone in the audience but it's been especially you so thanks so you know a you then personal distinction since I believe I first saw you at Adam and you got a tremendous amount of good for the district and for the students in a great example and you have the brightest imaginable each other yet so don't be a stranger thank you very much I'll be sure to come I can visit watch a board meeting or two now sir Joe you know you mentioned you know comparing yourself to previous board members and you know I mean you've definitely stood out above and ultimately you know I you know you should always always always stand on your own two and not worry about what anyone else
has done but you know congratulations for all your for your graduation coming up you know in two days officially and you know wish it was a little different but hope we make it as special as we can for you so thanks for for committing your Tuesday evening scripts no thank you all right next up all right so Thank You Sergio blast working next to you and always appreciated your insight you know you're one of those people that you when you speak people listen and people respect to what you say because I think you come from a good place you're representing your entire student body but you're also mindful of the world that this is which is some tough decisions need to be made and I just want to thank you for always having a level
head and being wise beyond your years so thank you congratulations - I have a few things to come here congratulations to our fifth and eighth graders students who are promoting usually we see them this time of year and we're not going to but we do have their videos that you're going to be provided that will provide to you congratulations to our seniors who are graduating this week we're excited for the virtual graduation and the vehicle parade such a weird phrase tomorrow night at our UHS for our seniors and thank you to the board and I want the public to know that the board really has worked hard behind the scenes to really try to create some sort of in-person experience and you know it's it's out of our hands I mean there's just some times
where and understandably that you know we don't have the power to make some of these larger decisions but the decisions that are being provided to us are in the best interest of safety and care for individuals especially kids and families we'll make it work and you talked about resilience that's going to be the key piece moving forward and staying connected for sure I'm with you on that transitioning now to the reopening think tank so we have this reopening think tank we meet once a week for about an hour and a half on WebEx and it's a lively group of people very bright people we have everybody on there from you know every group represented under the Sun last week we heard from the health and safety and we're following the framework from the LA County
Office of Education it basically comes up with five headings or subcommittees health and safety obvious we're going to need if we reopen schools or when we reopen schools and Jessica Sarah Lane is the lead of that group we have the social-emotional support systems and that's Anthony and Raymer as part of that group Anthony Toronto dr. Toronto we have family community engagement Susan wilds heads up that group ops or we like to call operations Annette is leading that group Mike Christensen is obviously in that group as well today was instruction and that was dr. Wesley and her entire team and we really started to have the conversation of what schedules could look like next year obviously we're coming up with some ideas and some recommendations at least for now for our group to continue to talk
and discuss and share and criticize appropriately so and then we're going to relax a little bit as we move along in some of these pieces because we know the game is going to change we just I mean of all the things we've learned in this experience is that every week holds something different if not every day but I do want to hand it to the committee or to the think tank because I do believe there are a lot of sharp Minds and a lot of dissenting minds and a lot of minds that are willing to do what's best for our school community again we believe the Cova 19 guidance from the LA County Department of Health will likely change so we're in this group trying to kind of I think of all the things we're
doing when we leave the group as staff is really fine that low-hanging fruit that we know we can knock out now because we know that this guidance is going to be fast and furious when a decision is made for us to react and create a learning experience for our kids in the fall so what we can get done ahead of time we're going to and then we continue to meet every Tuesday we won't meet the week of July 4th the RT to the reopening think tank also is going to be a survey to both staff and to families next week it will be in your Friday update we had a good discussion today about that survey and then continuing with we're continuing dr. Alpert and I are hearing evolving and potentially potentially positive budget news
dr. Alpern and her team will keep you apprised and you all have access to some very great minds regarding the state of affairs when it comes to k-12 schools and the budgets that are the budget that is forthcoming but it sounds like the governor's budget or the may revise will be revised in our favor but we'll see wanted to share with you some end of the year pictures since since we don't we can't be at school ourselves and these are just the pickup areas at each of the sites and the only site we do not have on here is this dry so just because we just they're doing their activity tomorrow Alta Vista obviously we've got a nice shade spot and everything ready to roll got some great people in their masks of course of
Burrell and then picks a pickup at Bernie I know usually you'd be at their school sites and then of course we've got Adrian there at Jefferson clearly in case you didn't know his name and then Lincoln pickup I like the shade structures I think we'll be continuing to look at shade structures so we should as we get creative down the road and then Madison very very happy experience tulino which I heard today from my own near and dear best of the family is that it was just very smooth and methodical and people were just great and appropriately distanced Washington I love how everybody's in the shade and there's Agnes that's Agnes let me tell her glasses off yes sir one of our retiring teachers and Adams middle school beautiful system people in place where they
should be and Paris of course and then our UHS so it looks like everybody's doing what they're supposed to be doing there so and then South Bay Adult School we were trying to figure out exactly what we're in these bags we think there just kind of care packages for the people so with that little transition of information just we are into the third week of our nation's demonstrations an objection in the killing of George Floyd and systemic racism so I want to make this very clear from our district because I think you know this needs to be said racism has no home in this district never has never will and this district will not tolerate any sort of prejudice or discrimination this is not a one-off statement this is who we are this is who
we have been as a board as a staff as a community and we will continue absolutely continue to create a space at a place for each and every students so he or she belongs in this district thank you thank you moving on to the hearing section members of the audience may address the board on any topic regardless of whether it's listed on the agenda however due to brown act regulations the board cannot engage a public discussion on items not on the agenda topics not on the agenda which are brought to the board's attention may be investigated by the administration and a report made to the board either publicly or privately in a future meeting comments and visitors should not exceed three minutes unless the time limit is waived by majority of board the board shall
set the total time for public input to each item into twenty minutes with board consent the president may increase or decrease the time allowed for public presentation depending on the topic and number of people wishing to be heard I have one report to the board or one board mr. Robinson good afternoon dr. keller board members and cabinet my name is Sarah Robinson and I'm a teacher at our UHS here speaking as an individual I started in the district in the fall of 2007 and the motto at that time was that we were going from good to great I think Monica Joyce actually still has her good to great license plate frame and I think that we've accomplished that goal are you a Jess today is a completely different school than it was when I started
we've increased our rigor or collaboration and raised our expectations for students and staff we've seen the campus physically transform into something that many junior colleges would envy we've seen our enrollment and teaching and support staff grow larger and larger every year I'm here speaking to you today because I think it's time for our district to once again commit ourselves to making big changes our mission statement says that we value the contributions of our diverse community and we talk a lot at all levels of the district about diversity and inclusion but this is no longer enough we must commit ourselves in this district to engage in the work of anti-racist education being an anti-racist educator includes an acknowledgement of the existence of systemic racism and white supremacy it also includes the admission that public education is
one of the many systems that have been used to oppress black people for centuries we must recognize these things as problems in order to engage in the difficult conversations about race that will allow us to search to strive for solutions together real teacher diversity must be accompanied by deliberate systemic practices that support all educators in constructively navigating issues of race racism and racial justice when we examine our system of education here in our be USD do we see that diversity of voice and experience do we see teaching practices that Center the black experience at our UHS we have about a hundred and sixteen teachers counselors and administrators six of them are black in our core subjects of ela math science and social studies there is one black teacher of all P teachers one is black
what opportunities does this give our students of all backgrounds but especially our black students to see and experience black competence in education what message are the parents in this community receiving about who is best to educate their children many studies have shown the most popular being from Johns Hopkins that black students who have had one black teacher by third grade were 13 percent more likely to enroll in college those with two black teachers were 32 percent more likely so if we're committed as a district to promoting a college-going culture what are we doing to make that a reality for our black students anti-racism work can also focus on the curriculum that we use in the classroom are we teaching representative history that includes examples of black excellence or are we satisfied with sharing some sanitized
quotes from dr. King and showing pictures of Rosa Parks sitting quietly on a bus are our students reading and studying the works of black authors throughout the year or only during Black History Month are we inviting black professionals into our classrooms and to our parent Knights to talk about career opportunities for our students most importantly we must make a concerted effort to discuss race in this district saying we're colorblind or that we're all one isn't enough we must all explore our privilege and our bias and engage in these conversations in the classroom in the faculty lounge and in this boardroom in the words of author Abram Kennedy the opposite of racist isn't not racist its anti-racist you either allow racial inequities to persevere or you confront racial inequities there is no in-between safe space of
not racist I'm here asking you today as an educator as an administrator as a board member as a student or as a parent to commit to the work of anti-racist education here in Redondo Beach I'm asking you to engage in difficult conversations to admit that systemic racism and white supremacy exist and that it is our job to dismantle them not just for black students and teachers but for everyone thank you moving to communications section our VTA checking CSEA is not here aft is not here I don't see a TA so will will to our be sharing day ya hear me IG is the other one okay that work sorry I've got two mics so congratulations to the newly elected officers summer sessions for our BEF their registration numbers are increasing daily which is an indication
the parents are really looking forward to having their children continuing to learn throughout the summer especially with all of our classes taught through a more remote and distant distance learning this summer the investor drive campaign planning for the fall has had to shift to a virtual model they plan on having a professional video produced highlighting all school sites the tagline this year is hashtag RB USD we got you thanks RBF on behalf of the Board of Trustees we wish all of you the district staff and employees a safe and healthy summer that's four rbis great moving on to general consent is anyone that would like to pull any items from ten point one to ten point five Mike like a full ten point one okay all right so can I get a motion in a

least it is nice that she was able to attend that CSB a regional call there were maybe 20 or 25 school board members represented almost everybody from Torrance I think was on that call that's it for me other than just congratulations to the seniors and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night it's like what day is it it's like Wednesday night it's like mic me but the there's a fair amount going on related to SoCal rock but I think I'm going to not talk about it killer having to do with the future and financing and affiliations so I think what I'd like to do is just request something on the next agenda or maybe we could have a little time to talk about it we'll have a little more developed a better developed a
set of information we can pass on to you and others have various valuation of stuff going yeah you and I both with the limit and congratulations to you guys - Gillian Raymer I know I need to tell you one thing Sergio before I forget not only the members of this cabinet but the former member of this board Miss Anita havoc also contributed here yes I'm doing it publicly camera test I want to say no never I just want to congratulate all the students obviously but this to have an employees to all of us to put to get to the end of this year is bigger than usual so I just want you to know that serving on this think tank and being a part of this board this has been quite a first year and
I want to know that even though everybody to know that things are very fluid and we get you know people see it something on from the governor and they think that that applies to the entire state but that also applies to the county and then something can change and we've been living in this very everything's changing what can we put our hip you know what can we hold on to there's one thing I know we can hold on to you and that is the commitment of everybody in this room and everyone in this district to do what's best for our children our staff and our families and I couldn't be prouder to be working with such an amazingly dedicated group of people and all people's voices are being heard and will continue to be heard
