good evening and welcome to the Cedar Falls Community School District Board of Directors meeting on this Monday February 24th I want to welcome everyone to our meeting I'd like to call this meeting to order and we'll start by having a public hearing for the 2020 2021 school year calendar so I have in my possession an affidavit of publication showing that the notice of time and place of hearing for the 2020 2021 school year calendar this notice was published in the Waterloo Cedar Falls courier February 16th 2020 the bow the board will now hold a hearing so is there anyone who would like to make a comment about the school calendar next year any juniors who want to graduate early okay all right seeing no comment we will close this hearing and move on to the

consent agenda is there a motion to approve the consent agenda so moved thank you miss Hines is there a second second second over thank you very much any comment or discussion seeing none all those in favor say aye aye motion carries and we're now moving on to public comment we have several that would like to give public comment to this evening I just want to welcome everyone thank you for coming this evening we always welcome public to come and observe our meetings and to be able to participate in the process as always we always try and be civil there's a three minute time limit for any public comment we have a very colorful little thing that will help you it's so that you know that your time is approaching and so hopefully you don't you

don't get cut off so I have the name sort of in random order so I would like to ask Cole Miller his Cole Miller here he's not okay very good Ruth Hayes I messed that up heinous I'm sorry for that thank you okay sorry hello my name is Ruthie Hanes I'm a seventh grader at P junior high I want to start this off by saying thank you for - committing to providing a safe environment at schools in Cedar Falls as a student it's important to me that my school is a safe place for me to learn by receiving training from Iowa safe school so you have taken an important step and ensuring that lgbtq+ youth are protected like in many others like many other schools across the world some students that p can be extremely

prejudiced against their lgbtq+ peers the number i've number of times I've heard the F slur t slur the word gay used as an insult or otherwise homophobic transfer or transphobic language is too many to count but this discrimination is not unique to Peet 42% of queer youth don't feel supported in their communities and 90% of LGBTQ post teens report that they have been bullied at least once in the last school year because of their sexual orientation or gender identity we cannot continue to accept this mistreatment getting training from IO Safe Schools is obviously fantastic but there's still more we need to do I feel confident knowing that the school board has made commitments to do whatever is necessary to make sure that all students feel safe and supported within their schools I look forward to

seeing our hallways become less threatening to LGBTQ plus students and I join you in your commitment to make sure you our our school is safe thank you Henry Gibbons sorry about this I didn't give you a heads up there was gonna be humans all right after Henry will be Sophia so as all of us who have come to this meeting are saying thank you getting that training for the administration is a good step in the right direction now we need to keep going just because the administration is educated does not mean that we are done kids are still getting bullied teased and made of fun of for who they are what you did is an awesome step but in order to reach our end goal we need to keep making steps just as big if

not bigger to this one and to help our queer youth kids keep doing things like this because you really are on the right side of what we're doing so that was a short little speech but thank you very much and Sophia Woods and if you want my name is Sophia woods I'm 14 years old and the president of the PSA when we first started the GSA some people asked why we needed one because gay people had gotten along fine for many years before this so they should be okay now and I can't tell you how long that is LGBTQ plus youth are bullied every day it isn't a joke and it isn't a phase it's a problem that needs to be solved what you've done training administrators on how to deal with and support LGBTQ

plus students and educating them on these issues is incredible that's a huge step forward on and on behalf of the entire GSA IP I want to say thank you but like Henry said as large as this first step is it still is just a first step we need to keep going to make all of our schools a safe space for LGBTQ students because we haven't done that yet and it probably won't be fully done for years this cause is far from over but again I want to say thank you thank you for taking this first step because it's always harder to begin than it is to continue we are also so grateful you for making this happen and we hope that we can continue this progress together Thank You mr. young I am Jim young

I'm a retired educator and I'm here tonight to thank you for the opportunity you provided to the administrative team recently Tim mark Bush present the Iowa Safe Schools so that excu thing whenever you say that recently they have mark Bush present how Iowa Safe Schools could be engaged in the professional development needed for all staff members in the 2020 2021 school calendar I appreciated dr. pretties meeting with some others of current and former CAF students in me in December we strongly advocated for the Iowa Safe Schools training and the urgent need for full staff participation in the Safe Schools profession development it became very personal during that conversation for many reasons I think of a student I had a few years ago that moved to Cedar Falls from out of state as the office staff

went through the student records a portfolio of work came with it the office staff person made some not so in supportive comments about a beautifully written piece the student had written about her two moms I was moved by this young person's clear understanding that she had three parents that loved her when I took my students on the field trip that year I had a parent question that moms partner coming as a parent volunteer I assured her that all students parents were invited to come along to enjoy the snowshoeing trip with her child this example illustrates the need for all staff to receive this critical professional development I think of another student who started using different name on assignments it didn't hit me right away but then I understood what message she was sending me we

finished the school year using her female name and the she/her pronouns the following year the student was used in the select her select his selected name and his he pronouns this example illustrates the reality teachers face in needing sensitivity training and education on the topic of identity there's a difference between one sex assigned at birth gender identity gender expression and eventually to whom they may be attracted these are types of things many of us have never had to ask ourselves well a school counselor and I could support my student not all staff may have handled it the same way it's another example of why all student staff will benefit from Iowa Safe Schools professional development our staff needs this type of training it may save lives I know you have met with that I would

save school so what are your big takeaways I'd like to know that I understand you are planning to include the equity and safety teams next how do you envision those committees assisting for a full staff development am I out of time okay okay very quickly as you're planning designed the new high school facility which is on the agenda tonight I ask that you consider gender-neutral bathrooms throughout the building and also ask yourself what considerations are being made for the locker room facilities I'm asking those two questions because for lgbtq+ students bathrooms and locker rooms are very uncomfortable and of an unsafe spaces my last comment was just thank you thank you thank you [Applause] all right that concludes our public comments section of our meeting and our student board representative unfortunately it's not able to

be here this evening but we of course have Janelle take it as a compliment mr. Hoffman you should I'd asked Denny to come in there because I was hearing some feedback from our public comments I apologize if that was bothering anyone but I think we're all all set now we'll go ahead and get started with our communications update we have lots of things we're going to cover first thing one I could just talk about as I was going through and putting this together there were some things that really stood out to me and these first three slides kind of expressed that so this shows kindergarten students at Aldrich Elementary doing yoga this is a parent volunteer mrs. Dahlstrom that leads those students in that and this really shows how they're using that collaborative space among

those classes within that new building and it's really great to be able to see them utilizing it in lots of different ways I really encourage anyone that is on Twitter to go to the Pete junior-high Twitter account and this is actually a short video I'm not able to play it right now but if you go to that Twitter account you're able to watch it this is actually a paraprofessional and they're carrying their student who has mobility challenges and of course swimming is one of our physical education elements as the junior high level and our paraprofessional wanted to make sure the student could be involved in that pool unit and of course the student wanted to be involved in it and the video shows them jumping into the pool together and this to the students you

are able to hear them cheering from the sidelines so this just really shows the definitely the extra effort that all of our paraprofessionals put towards making everything work for our students as as they want it to and being able to participate and this just shows one of our teachers this is Orchard Hill Elementary they have this post this shows a kindergarten teacher helping one of the students find the courage to navigate the climbing wall again it show delay it shows the new space there Orchard Hill being utilized then of course the teacher working with that student to make sure they're able to do that so the great thing that I think this illustrates is across our district it's not just our parents and it's not just our paraprofessionals and it's not just our teachers but

all of them working collectively together for our students so I think it was really needs to be able to show that tonight and then moving on even to our community this is our robotics team there was it was engineering week and John Deere invited them to come be a part of that so they were able to show off the work they've been doing as her competitions are gearing up and it's another example of how important it is for our community working with our schools and our students to be able to provide these opportunities it was the you and I talk horn jazz festival this past weekend in jazz one earned second place out of 14 bands in the for a class they had outstanding soloist awards - Jax Perry Sofia Munoz Eli Smith and Easton's

girl and if they are directed by Kyle Englehart so congratulations to that group and then also jazz - had a great performance as well and they are in first place in their class at the Jazz Festival and Gerald Ramsey is their director so congratulations to that group as well this was kind of a neat thing thought this would be a great way to maybe reach some folks that aren't on social media to let them know but our Hall of Fame has been transitioned online and some touchscreens are at the high school at the gym entrance in the auditorium so you're able to kind of scroll through different years and different events and activities but now that we have those online we have all these great original images that would maybe be really great for someone

to have back so if you would like if you know that you would be part you're part of that Hall of Fame you could stop into the high school main office 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday flip through those and grab your own photos so you're able to have those back this last weekend was Iowa high school wrestling Association championships and our coach Chris Ortner and his staff were chosen from across the state the class 3a coach of the year he's actually pictured here with his assistant coaches Brian Curran Sean Lange in Colby grow Tov and Peter Stewart so it's a big congratulations to them they've had a great year this year and coach shortener was also named MVC coach of the year wanted to be a big thanks to Dan jury Toyota

they presented a $2,400 donation to our men's and women's bowling teams and it's going to be used to replace equipment that was lost in the fire at Maple lanes that was word that they had their practice and meet so they're not able to utilize those dollars to replace what was lost so big thanks to Dan Deary and both of our bowling teams are now in will be participating in the state tournament this week this is a great thing that the foundation shared dick and Judy van de Keith they passed away November of 2018 dick was on the school board for 31 years and president and vice president for nine of those great supporters of the Cedar Falls school district and they actually asked that memorials be sent to the school's foundation recently than their son

Jason chose to support the connect CF program and just a quick reminder connect cf is our collaboration with the district and CFU and provides reduce cost internet students 7 through 12 because they're provided a Chromebook at those grade levels so then they're able to utilize those in the home environment this is Monica the foundation executive director and Lindsey Spears our associate principal receiving those dollars from the the legacy of dick and Judy so very much thanks to the VNA ki family you're gonna hear from hear of it again last time here we go vote March 3rd it's our revenue purpose statement again this is a special election will have a March 3rd it's to approve the 1 cent sales tax revenue purpose statement it's previously been approved by our district it now just needs to

be reproved because the legislature extended the 1 cent sales tax dollars last legislative session it is not additional funding or a tax increase just extends the model for us to be able to utilize those dollars you're can vote in person at the election office in downtown Waterloo but you can no longer actually submit an absentee request form so if you are not able to vote on the 3rd please do your best to get to the election office they'll be utilizing vote centers that day that'll be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at these five locations st. John Lutheran Church Bethlehem Lutheran Church Church of Christ cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church and Trinity Bible and we just need a simple majority for that to pass after tonight this website will be even more robust once envision

gives their presentation but just wanted a quick reminder that we have lots of information here and will be continually updating on the new high school planning process it's also public schools week starting today something that will be posting and kind of pushing out there to social media there's lots of different entities that are promoting this but we also just want to do a quick mention of it for anyone that's out there in social media you're able to share posts and kind of make your pledge to supporting public schools the Cedar Falls Lions are seeking nominations for the 2020 outstanding educator the deadline is March 1st so it's coming up soon and you can get the nomination form online directly from the district Facebook or Twitter posts as we've been sharing that information out last year

can sort Li receive this award it's opened any Cedar Falls educator and just too that also includes the private schools in Cedar Falls thank you yes yes st. Pat's Valley Lutheran can also be part of that nomination we have some great events coming up the next couple weeks at our junior High's homes this weekend has their variety show the roaring 20s so it's this Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 7 home students are free adults $5.00 and children $2.00 can't express enough how amazing the talent is that our junior High's so encourage anyone that is able to make sure to get to these shows and then the P junior high variety show is Friday March 6 at 7 and then March 7th at 2 and 7 I believe maybe there might even be

an emcee within our midst yes original song musicians in our midst maybe mm maybe not I think Henry might be on the performing so you'll see lots of people you know coming up at the end of March as the Cedar Valley family stem festival it's actually going to be at the you know dome on campus this year so it's we're able to really kind of broaden what we're able to have at the event with them more space definitely want to mention that to all of our families and community to put that on their calendars and yes we're of course talking about next year already since we have the calendar mention but our 2020 kindergarten parent meeting will be Tuesday March 31st at all of our elementary buildings so depending on where you live within your

elementary boundary that is where you will go to for your parent meeting we ask that only parents attend of course incoming kindergarten students will have a visitation on May 20th we from 9:00 to 11:00 that morning if there is bad weather on the 31st that'll be made up on the 2nd of April but there's any questions you can call our district office to find out what your attendance area is it's a long one today ok so since this is coming up and just wanted to do a quick kind of mention of this Jeff mentioned it I think a couple meetings ago but it's really important for us as a district to make sure we have especially young children counted as part of the census from the 2010 there was 4700 children that were not counted

and because of that then Iowa loses funding at the federal level so some special education grants school lunch program breakfast programs so we'll definitely pushing more information out to our parents and families in general April 1st is consensus day that's when you can start responding online and by mail or by phone to submit your census data and then June and July is when they will be going door-to-door to get those people counted that haven't responded to the census I know Andy you had mentioned something about yes at each of your seats at the board table is just a resolution I believe this is a joint resolution from Iowa Association of School Boards as well as is EA that talks just about the support that we have to ensure that everybody's counted within the census so

this is something that could be placed on the March 9th board meeting agenda just wanted to make sure people at the board table saw this and and that you know if there are questions or thoughts or comments just let me know but otherwise we'll have it the March night agenda okay just last few things and then I'm all done the tiger pride the spring 2020 our second edition of the magazine was out in mailboxes I believe on Friday if you didn't receive one you're able to read it online at this link it's posted there now I wanted to do a big THANK YOU to the Tiger High Line and then also the yearbook staff because they had a big part in the content for the magazine they do such quality work and it just seemed

like the right thing to be able to give them a little more publicity so to speak of the the great things that they're doing there as well so big thanks to them and guess where it's all located as well across all of our social media any questions real quick voting centers you can go any of those locations to vote yes thank you any yeah any of those five locations you can vote and since you brought it up in your presentation about the March 3rd vote just from a clarification standpoint does it raise taxes no okay so it's just all it is is just an extension we're just putting another stamp on what was what and if so so if we voted no I'm gonna see if I can paraphrase this if we voted no basically

the money would still be collected in our district every time we went to a retail or a restaurant that one cent would be added on and we voted no then those dollars would not come back to our district despite the fact that they're collected in our district correct yes and in they're collected statewide the one cent sales tax collected statewide goes to the Moines is allocated out per student across the state of Iowa to the districts in in essence and I think we try to state this as clearly as we can because it's really convoluted and kind of confusing the legislature by code extended the one cent sales tax the legislature by code outlined specifically what those dollars can be used for but they specified by code you have to vote locally to be able

to access those funds and use those in the legal way that they described you can use them so they've already approved the money they've already approved how you can use the money now they just say you have to have your community every disk in the state of Iowa has to have a revenue purpose statement that says we will fall I will code to allocate these dollars so it's redundant but necessary per Iowa code so and I'm gonna oversimplify this a no-vote sends our tax dollars to the rest of the state yes a yes vote just make sure that the dollars that are being collected I understand they all go down to Des Moines they get in a big big bag and then they get redistributed but but essentially our tax dollar all we're saying is

yes we want the money back that you've collected we want the money so we can spend it on all authorized legal purposes per Iowa Code all right which which is school infrastructure buildings and use for technology across the district it really keeps our tax levies at a minimum it really does you know one of the components of this is property tax relief due to the fact that allows us to be able to use those funds and not have additional property taxes that go to those purposes and that was the original intent when this went statewide in 2009 when every county all 99 counties in the state of Iowa approved this for the purpose of school infrastructure not this would not be a vote that is related to our bond vote that we passed as a

community to fund our new facility for the high school this is a revenue purpose statement that just allows us to utilize the 1 cent sales tax and I haven't I haven't seen the ballot yet but I'm hearing that it might be a very long ballot that there's a lot of copy a lot of text on it is that correct there is yes per Iowa code it just goes through what the purposes are of the revenue purpose statement so it talks about the fact that it'll go towards school infrastructure repair upgrades technology usage and it has required by law a lot of the Iowa code that's in there to be able to have the revenue purpose statement be legitimized okay thank you excellent thanks for your questions any other questions or comments right and for the

rest one other comment that that text would be available through the county sorry auditor the Auditor thank you the auditor's office if you wanted to get online and look at that text ahead of time and I think there's this it is on our website as well in waterloo's during the revenue purpose statement as well on March 3rd I think there's a few other districts too I can't recall specifically which ones but some of the smaller local regional districts in every district in the state of Iowa will have to do wherever new purpose statements it's a requirement to be able to access and utilize those phone those funds that are collected statewide and then allocated out per pupil for each of the districts excellent thank you jail moving on to the financial reports no yep thank

you if Janelle could pull up the financial report PowerPoint please thank you if we can move on so this evening we'll review the January financials and for our general fund our revenues were 3.5 million with expenditures of five point six you'll see a total fund balance of five point five you'll see that as a slightly above last year at this time there is still some changes within those balances but as I had indicated previously they will start to slowly stop being so volatile and not volatile but many changes in them so next slide please management fund for January for revenues we had four thousand four hundred dollars expenditures of seven thousand three hundred with the total fund balance of six hundred and eighty nine thousand I demand the board that the reason for that change

in fund balances we are utilizing some of that balance as of this year as approved by our certified budget last year next line our capital projects funds I'd like to leave this on as a just as a review there are no funds currently within our capital projects as these funds were utilized for our Aldrich North cedar and Orchard Hill elementary projects but as we continue with our new high school you will see the some items begin to fluctuate through fun 31 as we continue with those projects so as of right now that fund balance is at zero next line this would be our sales tax revenue this would be our fund 33 we had revenues of five hundred and seven thousand we had expenditures of 1.7 eight thousand hours million excuse me we had transfer

out which is our debt fund and if you recall that is our geo debt which we place in of three hundred and ninety four thousand for a total fund balance of fourteen million two hundred ninety one thousand I'd like to remind the board that we do have restricted funds of nine hundred ninety five thousand for unrestricted of thirteen million two hundred and ninety six thousand which again will be utilized for the infrastructure of our new high school as we continue to finish up our orchard and nor cedar projects and then obviously any other projects that we need throughout the district next line as our peple our revenue is thirty-two thousand expenditures of two hundred and twelve thousand with a total fund balance of three million seven hundred and thirteen thousand as we continue this is

our debt service we had revenues of twenty two thousand which is mainly interest we had our transfer in from our save which is three hundred and ninety four thousand we had expenditures of 1100 for a total fund balance of 2.4 million and again this fund particularly we have usually two payments throughout the year they have changed the process in which the expenditures so you may see some expenditures throughout the months as that process has changed as for for making those payments as we continue we have student activity of revenues of fifty eight thousand six hundred and eighty nine thousand made expenditures of a hundred and fifty four thousand with a total fund balance of five hundred and eighty thousand with our trust and agency fund we had revenues of nine thousand seven hundred and thirteen

dollars expenditures of thirty eight thousand with a total fund balance of two hundred and four thousand and as we continue our food and enterprise funds so we had revenues of two hundred and thirty seven thousand expenditures of two hundred and eighty four thousand with a total fund of 706 thousand and our coffee shop we had revenues of a 1655 expenditures of one thousand three hundred and you'll see a total fund balance of nine thousand four hundred and ninety nine which is significantly up from last year so lots of activity with our high school fund coffee shop and then finally as we move forward with River Hills consortium we had revenues of four hundred and fifty seven thousand we had expenditures of seven hundred and twenty thousand with a remaining fund balance of five hundred and

fifty seven thousand as a reminder this is a flow through which those funds are due it's a consortium with several districts throughout the state we are the fiscal agents of those those funds flow through two central rivers AEA for those services is there any questions any questions wonderful those will be placed on file for future audit moving now it's our distinct pleasure to welcome our teacher librarians here this evening I don't know if you have a I'll let you organize yourself however you good evening we'd like to begin by thanking the board for listening to us this evening Cedar Falls school should be proud of the fact that there is a certified librarian in every building here studies have shown that Iowa elementary students with the highest reading scores on state standardized tests used more

than two and a half times more as many books and other materials during school library visits also Iowa reading test scores rose with the development of school library reading programs library programs also other school library characteristics associated with better test scores are when school librarians teach information literacy skills to students when the library is staffed by an endorsed librarian when there is collaborative planning between teachers and librarians when there is extended library and staff hours when school librarians provide in-service training to teachers when the collection is larger and newer when there are more student visits flexible schedule scheduling and higher expenditures per student and again we thank you for your time tonight thank you I was looking for this so who are we our name has changed over the years some of you may be

familiar with the job title media specialist we all go by the job title teacher librarian at this point but even though the name has changed we still do the same kind of problem solving and the same teaching and the same encouragement of students to love reading all of the teacher librarians in Cedar Falls hold either a master's degree or an endorsement specifically for school library studies and collectively we have taught for a hundred and sixty-six years so you are getting a lot of experience with our department at the elementary level our mission statement is to grow readers and to support learners there's a link here on the slide show that leads to the Elementary's essential skills basically those essential skills cover a few different areas obviously love of reading also finding and using information online

digital citizenship as well as digital literacy for our upper grades and research skills for all grades we'd like to take a minute to let the elementary librarians introduce themselves and let's see is it looks like cedar Heights this is Tiffany irons she was unable to be here this evening she had a prior commitment and that are some photos of her library at cedar Heights I'm Mary Asher and I met Aldridge and then I also teach two classes at Hanson and I'm calling Nelson I'm the teacher librarian at Lincoln I'm Darla Striegel and I'm at the newly renovated nor a cedar library which we love I also am shared with Hanson for two classes i'm lisa new guard i am the teacher librarian toward you - hello he doesn't help i meanyes show part i'm the

teacher librarian at Southdale I'm Stephanie Edson and the teacher librarian at Holmes junior high this is our mission our mission is a little bit more in-depth but we feel it still understandable by the secondary students and our essentials are linked there to spreadsheets inside the Google Docs our essentials are mostly tied to tasks so it's a little bit more in-depth than you could take some time to look at those if you like ok here is some interaction between students and teachers at homes junior high khristianne hall teacher librarian at the high school so now that you have met all of the teacher librarians in the district we want to tell you a little bit about the different areas that we work in so a teacher librarian fulfills many roles within a school at the elementary

and at the secondary we teach classes directly to students we're also an instructional partner for the classroom teachers we are an informational specialist for the building obviously we administer each of our library programs and then also we serve in many different leadership roles so as a teacher we design curriculum and we an instruction to support students as readers we work with them to learn more about inquiry research information literacy and digital literacy as an instructional partner we partner directly with the classroom teachers and help them design and implement curriculum evidence-based curriculum help them integrate deeper learning critical thinking information literacy skills digital citizenship different technologies and innovations and then as an information specialist boy nobody knows how to Google like a librarian nobody knows how to Google like a librarian so we provide high quality

library resources 24/7 obviously online but then we have that personal connection that where we can connect our school with a global community we are the go-to person who knows how to find those great resources for teachers how to help students find resources and we also serve as an information point for the ethical use of information based students and staff as a program administrator we plan and we maintain our physical space also our virtual spaces all of our libraries have robust websites for staff and students and then we also make sure that our library programs are seamlessly integrated with all of the school curriculum and also as a teacher leader librarians served many different leadership roles in the district all librarians are members of the integrating technology and technology leadership groups many of us also serve

on our building leadership teams and technology leadership I know the secondary has this awesome picture I'm going to go to here in just a sec but we are the technology Troubleshooters for building so in between teaching classes working with staff to develop and implement curriculum administering a program in between all of that we also troubleshoot technology we personally have written 1502 technology orders this school year so that would be August till last week I can't tell you how many more we've personally taken care of without a work order because many times it comes to us and we are able to resolve it without involving the tech office so yes and here's a great example of technology leadership can you speak to this for just a minute because the work they do at the secondary to

help students with technology is just amazing so this is how our Chromebooks arrive and this is Abby's workroom at P junior high and you know we get our two hundred and some Chromebooks which covers the seventh grade and then we unpack them distribute them catalog them and you know keep track of them I think at least two different ways in our building in two different ways in a tie ts so there's just a lot to keep track of and that it's a huge job in it and it looks overwhelming and it is but but we happen to get to it and you everyone helps out and it's just it takes a village almost and we all do it together and it's just an amazing process and the kids are so happy to get them and

we spend a lot of time talking to them about their devices and things like that so yeah that's an interesting process one that seems to work we have this last slide and this is a group of guidelines and documents that we use to refer to that helps us drive our curriculum and our standards and there's Iowa school library survey at the bottom we each fill that out every single year and we answer questions based on our own school and library data so there's just lots to look at there do you have any questions for us I just have a quick comment I so appreciate all that you do for our students and the teachers and our schools and our buildings but one of the things that I think is perhaps most important in this day

and age is helping students figure out how to weed through the vast amounts of information that's out there and be responsible consumers of that information figure out what is accurate reliable information and what they need to maybe question or dig a little deeper into so thank you for doing that work with our students we do spend a lot of time in something eighth grade doing that and I know they do in the upper elementary to give a shout out to all the library secretaries because they are also like the wind beneath our wings really helping with those Chromebooks and all of that so thank you for staffing them as [Music] covering processing we would not just a question about checking out books as we're in this new digital age and people have their Kindles and

and that type of thing and I know what the Cedar Falls Public Library allows you to check out books electronic I've never been successful at doing that but there just could be an age gap there is that is that something that is that something we we offer or well we for the most part use our yearly budgets to purchase print materials our per pupil amount hasn't changed since the mid-90s so we are very grateful that the AEA provides us with Macan via which has thousands of digital books I know at the elementary level were able to utilize some free websites that's something that as a department obviously there's a need for our students especially for older students it's just something we haven't been able to have the funding to do to the level that we

would like to so by and large students really like to read paper copy books and they're not afraid to carry them around either we have no problem with kids checking out books that would just be another opportunity for them to check out something else that they could read too but yeah and all you need is an app called Libby and your library card number and it's really easy oh you write it down Libby I have a quick question for Christy our high school librarian so you may not know yet because I know we're still in this visioning process we're still talking about you know what the high school could be do you have any ideas yet or concepts that you are really excited about being able to do in our new facility that maybe you've

been limited from doing our students have been limited from doing until we've been able to do something like this well I'm excited about the workspaces where kids can go into rooms and work independently or as groups I'm also after attending the conference fall I really want to see lots of spaces where kids can adjust it to themselves and work as they want so spaces that are flexible fantastic wonderful I want to thank you all for coming I did mention at the group before that my mother was a school librarian so it's a pleasure to have have all of you here and and so I thank you very much for all that you do for our students and our school thank you very much great job thank you and on that segue from Sleeper we will

move into a high school update good evening we're back to give give another update on where we're at with the planning of the high school and hopefully we'll you'll hear a little bit about some of the spaces that you'll see what Christy gets to kind of move into so we're excited tonight to show up there to show the next steps of where where we've gotten and we have a tour to go through Abby is gonna kind of walk you through the building a little bit and show you actually what it what it potentially could look like so in terms of our process and where we're at were in the strategy face still we've done lots of development in terms of the big steps the big boxes and organizing the building the big pieces of that

and really now we're in that feedback stage and getting additional will be getting an additional input in the coming weeks and months with staff again to kind of take the next level of detail get beyond moving there big spaces around and how it's organized in the building and into the detail so a little step back to what you saw last time I don't have 50 diagrams to go through with you tonight so last time we kind of walked through the diagrams of how we've organized the site this is what you saw last time with how the building is organized with music and gym those community spaces and academics to the north there and the building diagram we showed you how we took all of those spaces that we're looking at and then developed them into

what you're seeing here in terms of our first configuration and layout and you'll see through the additional information tonight how that's been developed and how we've refined those into into a floor plan so the project drivers that you've seen and we'll talk about them in different ways tonight in terms of how those project drivers have developed into strategies throughout designing different spaces in the building so you'll hear a little bit more about connectedness and community and diversity of spaces and at a Christie's point of creating flexible spaces where students can go work you'll see you'll see more of that in upcoming images here another thing we've that the planning team has really pushed the design team on and felt is important as part of this project is sustainability so a few things that were really

integrating into that viewpoint of sustainability is the key one energy efficiency and also daylighting and views and how we're approaching site so several of these things you'll hear us talk through they're really just integrated into how we're approaching the design of this building and the site critical in terms of the learning environment one piece has been really natural day lighting and views not just the natural daylight but really the views for those for those out into the space and connecting with nature and there's lots of research out there that really shows how this impacts student learning and has been something we're really looking at how we can incorporate into the design of this project this is a section through one of those learning communities and showing courtyard space allowing natural light into all the areas

of the learning studios into these spaces we've looked at building massing in terms of energy also some of those colored images are day lighting studies that we've you were using modeling to look at these things to really study them and try and improve how the building is laid out and that energy use we're really looking at an aggressive goal to be regional leaders that's one thing you all and the community has pushed us down to be a regional leader so we're looking to be best in the region and pushing us to a target of thirty-five here in terms of energy use site development that site diagram has really then developed into this site plan here so you can see basically that that configuration of the High School in the center creating parking student parking community

parking for those events from the South leading into the building organizing it with fields that are adjacent to you and eyes fields and athletics and then showing future development of Fieldhouse based off of athletics to the east future pool adjacent to that Fieldhouse to the north and potentially other additions there are showing as well there's also integration of solar panels we're still working through some of those things on the site as we partner with CFU they're really being a great partner as part of this project with energy modeling and looking at development of solar panels on the site and you'll see some imagery of it on the building as well so the floor plan so that floor plan diagram you saw has really been developed into a much more detailed configuration and the the tour

really show it in a lot a lot better light than what you can see here so I won't spend a lot of time but it's really that that same diagram of community public spaces to academics kind of from this public Zone in the at the front of the building into that academic more private zone we have a group of people in the audience I'm sure who are very interested where the libraries at yeah so the the research center is what again librarians changed in terms of their names also what we try to call a library as you guys know also has changed so we call it media we were calling it research center here in this diagram and you'll see some imagery of that space as we go along so it's the research center here

that is flanked on either side by courtyard space so connecting out to nature and views into that area so a little bit before I let Abby jump in and show you some really cool interior development is how we got to some of these spaces and those drivers that have turned into strategies so the building entrance is about connecting community bringing them in showcasing history showcasing that that student achievement so as Janelle talked about those video boards that are out there we see some of that being able to happen here to show student achievement and what's happening in that school so as the community comes in they experience that and and welcome that environment building leadership at the front door for that supervision security entrance as well as a component of leadership with counseling closer to

academics so there's that tie to the students more centralized in the building wellness component of the building really promoting healthy habits and developing a space there that can handle multiple events and support that part of the school and and school pride and I'm going through this kind of quickly because I want to show you some imagery of these spaces the community Commons space we really see that as the development of the cafeteria not calling it a cafeteria it's much more than that it's really the social hub of the school it's the main level again it's connected to that courtyard for views to the exterior as well the small learning communities is really the the exciting space of the building with the student learning we're really approaching this as small learning communities to break down those

spaces where the students are at and connecting teachers through transparency letting in one tour we went to a tech high one thing the teachers were excited about in terms of transparency is walking down a hallway seeing what one teacher is doing and what the students are doing in that room and I didn't even realize you guys were working on that so we really are excited to have some development in these spaces that really open up the classrooms to those common spaces that are more flexible they have for learning and again spaces here that connect that to story elements so it's not just two stories separated again that that kind of connectedness element to the building and the innovation hub is really connecting these learning communities together and creating spaces for students to to really take

their projects to the next step and have resources outside of the classroom where they can go video production lab there's space there where they can write on walls put their information up on screens and and work together to develop those projects further and media research center that that great space where students can come grab a book but also be that place where they can that heads down private study we heard that from the students wanting that type of space as well so get into the exterior of the building a little bit and jump from the interior so when one exercise we did and a few board members and leadership was there was looking at different facilities and seeing what is attractive to them and what's important so a few those key things natural light again

you'll hear that a lot use of natural materials and connection to outdoors were really key factors and these were all images that got strong positive feedback through our development that led to what we're really looking at for a pallet of materials what is what are we going to use to create this new high school bill so the key component bringing that warmth in in the natural wood and you'll see that in the development here stained precast and aluminum composite panels looking at materials that also are durable cost-effective since this is a large a large building and of course different ways of bringing in natural light through diffused translucent panels to help diffuse that light in certain areas and and glazing throughout so this is image that we've created of the the new front door of

the high school and that really the concept here is that welcoming inviting feel bringing warmth in that canopy they're bringing in wood material to really welcome you into the space and this is also obviously students main interaction in the building as well as the communities for those main events stepping back a little bit then you can see more broadly of the school the metal panels are shown there in that darker color that an artful way of developing this space that becomes the theater and then balancing the glass the materials with with concrete panels and stuff that you see as well and this is an overall view then of the campus and you can start to see we're also thinking about integrating solar panels onto the roof as well as onto the site itself and this

lets you see how that would be in the overall organization of the building so I'll turn it over to Abby brain can I ask a quick question yeah I know you've been to the book this meeting four or five times just give different updates one of the slides that you've talked about frequently there's a number of people met with during this iteration and planning how many people do you think you have met with to get feedback input guidance probably over over a thousand people and different different oops that students teachers staff we've met with different groups with the city as we talk about fire lanes code we're getting into so we're talking to the building officials so many many different groups to get input and feedback and I think as I said a little bit

last time how we've developed those diagrams is really about a reiterative process so we're developing things trying to really take to heart the feedback that we get and come back with with more plans sometimes Andy's tired of seeing a new plan and the new development and we're really to that point where we've really think the big pieces have settled down through that rid of reiterative process but we're getting into the detail now well there'll be some further development but most of those big pieces will have situated themselves with all that feedback and folks we've talked to it's been really neat to see those iterations and you know when you've worked with staff or community members parents students and and when they say what's the synergistic areas that might work well together and just seeing what

those plans look like from day one to where they're at now the evolution the the listening the the different components that you've done to help make this fit with what people's hopes wants and wishes are it has really been amazing so thank you for all that time you bet and and that listening is in our first you know important step and we'll we'll continue to do that as we develop these plans and and move forward so and just to confirm we've had a staff committee I forgot what it was called yes we have I think 47 different committees but we do we have one that's just made up of different staff leaders that have been working through this we have one with the board rep and board representatives we have one with some of our

planning team and just looking at some of those big picture items so you know there's multiple different groups multiple different committees that have had multiple pieces of input throughout this process okay thank you we do not have 47 but there's there's a lot all right hi everyone we're gonna start to kind of dig into interiors if we could pull up the visual listening slide again all right so much like Brian was showing what the exterior visual listening summary we also did one with interior so this is really focused on having open inviting spaces flexible spaces a lot of collaboration and of course natural daylight within the space which you guys will see here in the video in just a second and then we just wanted to briefly touch on interior finishes and talk kind of

high-level what we're starting to look at from a schematic standpoint you'll start to see some of those warm natural materials come into this space but what's really important about this palette is showing how we can mix great aesthetic with also something that's durable and so we're thinking about what this facility is going to look like and how it's going to operate within the next 50 years so we're proposing finishes like polished concrete you know materials that are multifunctional like felt that are acoustic pinnable and also serve as well protection so those are kind of the highlights of what we're starting to look at as far as interior finishes go and then now we are going to show you guys enter video and I'm going to talk through kind of high-level each space alright so this

is a view as you start to enter the front vestibule Brian had talked about that warm wood canopy that carries you in and welcomes you into this space and so we are entering the secure vegetable here this is intended to be open for students you know before school to pass freely through but when visitors are coming through they will pass through admin and have a secure entrance experience here you can start to see that admin space and I look back at that secure vestibule you'll also start to see how we have centrally located a lot of community community spaces so the auditorium was off to your left we have the community room that was centered and then we're now looking at the gymnasium this really serves as an invitation to the community and really trying

to put that information in those spaces at the forefront the gymnasium will be connected to an auxilary gym that can be closed down here you can see that this is the community room this is multifunction this obviously serves as an invitation to the public but will also be used internally for you know film room and an all staff lobby and all staff space you guys can start to see here where we have a centralized leadership zone and so this is connected directly to the Student Success Center or the student career and readiness center and that has a direct adjacency to the Commons which is really the heart of the building the Commons here is really intended for a lot of multifunctional space so think you know flexible furniture we can have smaller group meetings you

guys can move tables together for larger group meetings you can have banquets here maybe some community events can happen within this space and of course that's directly adjacent to the servery here you're starting to get some nice sight lines out into the courtyards which we will experience here in a little bit towards the end of the video but again looking at how functional that this space can be you can start to get a good feel as to what the material palette is looking like when it's all blended together and now we're starting to head towards that innovation hub or that innovation zone that Brian was talking about so right there is a really great example of a pitch space for students it's really a multi-purpose space for students and staff we're currently now looking down

at the pitch stair and that's used for presentation space for students any sort of innovative you know techlabs owns all that good stuff now we're entering our learning community here you can start to see how the natural daylight really spills into the space and you're really starting to capitalize on that transparency of learning in the core here we have a multitude of spaces we have a seminar room and then we also have a teacher collaboration space and kind of heads down space right here are where the restrooms are located and the specific hub these will have gender-neutral bathrooms and then here you can see kind of that co-learning environment and how all of those learning studio is really kind of connect in the center here and it creates for a really dynamic and collaborative work

area it's also important to point out that the teachers and the center there they will have kind of a combination of a collaboration zone but also a heads-down work area and they will always have great sight lines to the students and be able to kind of keep an eye out on what's happening there in the center and within the studios here as we start to get to kind of the open to story space that connects academic wing so the academic wings are on either side of the west and the east side and there's two on each side they're just on top of one another and so they are connected with this central staircase which we are about to go down here and we're really trying to capitalize here on every kind of part in peace

and square foot of space that is offered in the school and so you will see here that underneath the stair we're trying to create another kind of collaboration or you know potential queueing space for students more collaboration zones for students kind of create these spaces and turn them into their own and then here you can continue to start to see the studios and how you are starting to get those really nice sightlines out into the courtyard which we will be entering here in just a moment so those courtyards they're really about creating another learning zone so think outdoor learning labs these spaces are going to be really unique in the fact that they're that direct connection to the exterior that not a lot of schools are presenting right now it's we're pretty excited about it

these spaces will be low maintenance so think you know tall grasses rocks we will have furniture out there that supports learning curriculum so we will have tables and chairs out there in flexible collaboration areas here you can see above there is a bridge that connects kind of the core of the building to one of those learning communities that happens on either side of the building and then there you can see a really nice view of the Commons up on that second floor there and then underneath this space is a media center which we are about to go into and so within media you'll see that we really do have a lot of different flexible options we have individual workspaces which you can see right here so these are almost like little foam booths where students

can have more heads down space this was something that was asked for by the students and so we have about eight of these within the media center and you can see it's a really nice balance of literature kind of heads down collaboration areas as needed and now we are about to go to the pitch stair to get a better view of that off to the left we will have the Tigers den which is the cafe and so with the courtyards and with the Tigers and we're really trying to keep students on campus and really start to kind of create some of those really powerful opportunities we can get when students start to stay within the building and so we think that creating those zones like the Tigers and the courtyards will create a lot of

good opportunities for power our obviously you can see a lot of students hanging out here you know on their laptops on the pitch stereo when it's not programmed out and ultimately using great spaces like the Commons that you see here for a lot of flexibility this is a really nice view connecting you from the Commons down to that front door so you can see it's nice and welcoming to the public do we have any questions that was really fast one question just because of that great that great imagery there at hand how what's the length of that like from approximate are we talking a football field that's about 300 feet down there I'd similar to going from the lot the current lobby of the auditorium down to the gym okay existing high school that was

a fantastic tour thank you what would you say how do you boil down to the some of the differences that surface with regard to how I as a teacher right now in the high school what am ia going to be able to do that I haven't been able to do how am i teaching day be similar but yet maybe unique because of the features that we just saw what we've what we've heard a lot about in our discussion with teachers is the things that they try to do in this space that are difficult today they really lets them do much more easy they do lots of lots of these teachers are breaking down their classes in multitude of ways small groups they're out in hallways sitting on the floor they're there in the room being

noisy with each other those more open spaces really allow that type of group work and different types of learning to happen in different ways so they can still sort of do how they will address the students kind of say we're going to work on this project today but we're going to break out and but instead of hearing the desks move around noisily and difficult where we're looking at furniture that's much more adaptable flexible in terms of use the students can quickly reorganize the room teachers can also then have students out in that that open space that you saw as well working out there and then coming back to the classroom to collaborate as a group again so it creates that those diversity of spaces for for the teachers and we'll be doing kind of a

furniture pilot program and classroom pilot program meaning we're really gonna as we kind of select how we the type of furniture that we want to use and Technology will really take that and pick three four classrooms in the high school and really test that out and let the teachers work through that work with the instructional coaches on how they may teach differently so we don't want them to the teachers to move into this building day one without some kind of pre work pre training and planning so because of the flexible space and they increase the variable combinations I guess to that those spaces allow a teacher to do well well by the apartments will there be shared spaces I'm our classrooms going to be shared by multiple teachers or is there how flexible does all

that become in terms of yeah the intention is there's a little bit more flexibility and how that works that Center teacher collaboration space that Abby talked to would really be the home base for teachers allowing those classrooms to be more optimized in terms of utilization so there is a sharing but we've talked a lot about that and Jason has looked into and will continue to kind of look into scheduling and see how to not make teachers go from classroom the classroom to classroom in different period but have their schedule developed in a way where there may be teaching in this classroom for two periods if they have a break in their day then there they may go to another classroom so I think one of the the big conversations has been flexibility and being dynamical

spaces so science rooms have to be unique by nature just with the size and square footage and some of the safety different components that are embedded in those but the hope would be that math just won't be in one wing we're going to have integration we're going to have different rooms that are learning Studios that serve the needs of students and this has been really an exciting aspect you know there's a conversation about restrooms and meeting the needs of all students how do we make sure that we are flexible with the access to the site to ensure that we're serving the needs of all students when we look at maybe accessibility challenges but also just different learning styles that students have with areas that might be head down spaces because noise might bother some students

other students really relish and and like when they're in a noisy environment so having spaces that are combination of moderate noise or maybe a little bit more interaction so there's a lot of research but also then just a lot of I think kind of mindfulness going about looking at these spaces for all the different inputs that we've had in dialogues that we had but to try to meet the needs of all of our students because again our mantra is every student every day I really appreciate those outdoor spaces and having access to those for students just on their own or maybe to eat or to have class time out there that just will broaden up the possibilities for the learning that can happen but I would wonder if you could just address the security of

the school particularly given that those outdoor spaces are gonna be a part of the learning day yeah so overall that those loud or spaces would still have security on the ends so they would be so they would be secure in that way just like the rest of the building thank you there are roughly 10 different consultants on this project as well that look at acoustic that look at sound just all different components when it comes to theater one of the different consultants will be a kind of a safety consultant too as we look to the future to ensure that we're looking at this and a very mindful approach that that meets the needs of a accessibility into the the building for students staff community but also that safety aspect that meets the needs of everybody

feelin feeling safe and secure within the building some I'm I'm sure another question so as we're looking obviously the building's beautiful it looks really good how are we at how are we from a budget standpoint to be able to be able to deliver this how do you because obviously you're in you're in charge with coming up with a design and then also allow us to be able to stay within the budget yeah so we're partnering with storey construction they're the construction manager with us and we've gotten to this stage and they have a set of documents that is a little more black-and-white than what you saw here that really shows their floor plans dimensioned sections elevations pricing set of documents that also has a lot of narrative information information from our consultants and their be

digging into that over the next three weeks essentially and really give us our first kind of check point of where costs are and we'll work with our design team and and the planning team to kind of look at those things prioritize and see where the dollars are and and keep us aligned with the budget that is my caveat to this this is a schematic design that now going through all those next steps of looking at cost trying to marriage all the different utilities and site development and the building and all the other residual components and you guys explained this much better than I do but this could tweak and change and you know we'll tweak and change because of all those different cost estimates another component so things that you see here and this fly

through might not be there a week from now could change or look differently a month from now and by the time bid documents occur nine months from now could look different just as we go through that because we know what our budget is and we have to make sure we fit within that budget to do things fiscally responsible always looking to make sure that this is a building that's going to meet our needs for the next 50 to 70 years is going to be exciting and a source of pride but balancing those factors because we do know what the industry benchmarks are in staying within those benchmarks and just to applaud you for the efficiency of the the building I was came to the party late but with the step solar panel is always a

part of the original plans or in working with CFU we've had those dialogues of how they wanted to potentially partner with the school and how that could be done on the building on the site so we're still exploring that but they they're definitely open to that being on on the building itself as well as on the site so take it takes space that we are not utilizing for other things it's a large building so it's a great way to get get some square footage for that solar field the terminology that was new to me which was really exciting was Net Zero ready we want to make sure that this building maybe not Net Zero day one but certainly as Net Zero already and CFU has been such a great partner in that that it's it's

remarkable what we I think we'll be able to accomplish with the industry benchmarking but also trying to be the regional example of efficiency yeah that regional target we're shooting for is really looking at being energy efficient with our mechanical systems that we're putting in the building and how we're developing them the how we partner with CFU in terms of solar on-site to even take that energy use down further is above that so we're shooting for that goal and then the solar panels are really helping us get to that next step that Andy's talking about about trying to get to Net Zero already way into the weeds here no pun intended but also just the natural plantings around the building just the different things that we're exploring as well just that that environmental efficiency beautification of

that site with prairie grasses natural grasses there's just so many different layers to this that we can't do justice with with just some of the initial pictures but it's truly is amazing and the thought got into it that'll probably be another update that we'll have showing you a little more that site development you've seen in the plan but you really haven't got a chance to to see a lot of that development how the landscaping is going to integrate with the building appreciate to it the all of those sustainability features the discussions that are happening about having signage and educational opportunities around all of those features not only for our students but also for community who want to see how some of these features could be implemented in businesses or in homes or you know yards

so that's gonna be an exciting feature and showcase for our community so you know a couple things just looking having been in many classrooms as I saw and first of all what kind of feedback have you gotten on from students teachers and even I guess some staff on the such the prominent use of glass in the classrooms and what do their feelings on what I guess for me as a teacher would be who are in cloud who's in a classroom all the time the feeling of being an official is kind of what comes to mind for me and then the second thing just one that just really kind of stood out for me looking at the floor plan the the compactness of the industrial tech the woods the metals the auto and in particular I've

been in woods and autos classes as a sub and those looks like those are combined space in some ways on the scheme and this may be way way in the weeds and this may be something that is not locked in at this point but those are two that are not gonna work all that well you know we got the welding stations and ventilation fans running on the other side you've got pneumatic tools and things like that I'm just wandering into the lock you know how fixed is that that's not just if you're trying to run up woods and a metals class the same or not Woods autos in the metals class at the same time there's gonna be noise considerations that you know that it could be an issue you know trying to run simultaneous

classes that in those spaces right so to reiterate a little bit what what Andy said we're gonna continue to meet with staff and we're doing this week and next and we'll have a series probably another essentially three meetings three to four meetings with staff to really dig into the detail of their spaces they haven't seen a lot of this yet they've seen some of the preliminary stuff before we've really gotten to the tour so we've talked about those things your specific question about those being one space they're not one space it probably just kind of looks like it from what you're seeing there with the labeling of it so they are separated and and we continue to have discussions with them about those areas and make sure we're we're definitely meeting meeting their needs in

those spaces and then what kind of feedback on they just like the problems of glass in the classroom yeah so glass was talked about a lot and and something we discussed quite a bit on on tours when we went to different locations and there's both sides of that you know there's both sides of the fishbowl comment if I'm going to be seen too much and then there's a side of the story I shared a little bit with the teachers that you know might have been a little reticent in that design when they moved into their their new school and had the same saw the same imagery but really that glass led to that transparency of instruction it also the noise factor and and maybe being distracted is something that we've heard but again in those

tours we've also heard the glass and the teacher starts to be self supervising if you will they kind of start to the students start to understand they're on display really so it's not and they start to supervise themselves and and are aware that others can see them so it's it's it's balancing both of those in where we're trying to do that with the staff you know what I appreciate about those spaces is that if you go into any co-working space any progressive business space that is all about co-working collaboration it is last it's not you mean it's transparent it's not glazed less it is transparent class because that is that's how you collaborate with openness so I think our progressive teachers are very open the feedback I've gotten is very excited about the opportunities to

do that I also love that you're treating our prospective young adults with the respect that I think we should be giving high school students the trust that we can trust that they can be in a class classroom without without being not not able to learn so I think it's my part of my reason for getting involved in education is because I think it is time we start teaching or treating these young adults as peers and collaborators because they are going to be out in the workplace in college in just a year two short years three short years so I think it is important for our staff to start realizing the more we can trust and treat our students as young adults that they are having those open spaces having the ability to come in and

out of classroom spaces just like we do as adults I think that is an important piece of Education that I feel passionate about so I appreciate those spaces and I encouraged you know our teachers to understand there's a lot of opportunity here to have just a different relationship and collaboration with students than they possibly have had in the past yep we're seeing a lot of excitement from the teachers about about those abilities all right thank you very much for all your questions we're gonna keep going with updates of the high school as we move through this process oh there are more well just 101 we can talk briefly so next steps and schedule were we're jumping in our architectural world from schematic design into design development and as it sort of says is what it

means we're really developing into the details of the design with staff and others working with all of our consultants as Andy talked about to really get into the detail and then like I said we we sent our pricing documents two-story construction and they'll be working on that and then we'll once now that we've unveiled this to all of you to see what it is we'll start to do that with the community as well and let them start to be engaged and and see where we're at in the process any questions on next steps all right all right thank you thank you moving on to super intense report just a really one item on March 9th we'll have our preliminary budget in that meeting hard to believe that it's already spring of 2020 so it's going

quick all right Oh March 9th will be our next board meeting any questions comments I just want to give it a little quick update I went to the legislative forum here on last Friday and a couple things of note of course we know that the state legislature is still we're still waiting on them to set the SSA rate and there as not much has changed as far as we know there Senate's house is at 2.5 with the governor the Senate's at 2.1 I think and the expectation from our our local legislators is that's going to be probably in between somewhere so that's gonna affect our budget planning here and there the subject the topic of these forum itself was kind of center around gun and gun safety a bill that we just might want to

keep our eye on is s SF 22 24 and it's one that's going to if pass it's going to allow Iowans to with a permit to carry sidearms with them on school parking lots and sidewalks and drop-off areas so that might just be one we might want to keep an eye out on looks like there's excuse me there's some other things that I see there's a bill to address the I think we know the one we talked about or the one that the addressing violence situations and classrooms that's looking like that will pass we've gotten a lot of feedback from stakeholders they're gonna set up there's gonna be looks like it may establish grants to set up there are therapeutic classrooms and set protocols to get those students into those classrooms so you know a

few things just to keep an eye on there was I didn't I couldn't find it on the legislative site but there is apparently a bill in the Senate that's kind of floating around that may try to create private school vouchers so just Timmy Brown powers mentioned that and that just might be something we wanna keep an eye on I couldn't find something on the alleged site but she said there's something out there I think just what I recently read from the end of fun a week last week that there was not any voucher bills that came through funnel week that doesn't mean that something couldn't pop back up but as of now just through the phone a week it looks like there was nothing that made it through all right I just had a quick

comment Jeff I wanted to just kind of revisit Jenelle's report again and and when we talk about our new facility how much we're talking about the collaboration between the community and the high school the community and our students and I just want to commend our speakers tonight because I think this was a group who I mean I appreciate them coming to us in the manner in which they have come to us you know they came to us with concerns they've come back in a very positive manner obviously still asking for us to continue to work on certain things but appreciative of the district listening and trying to do and move forward so I just want to encourage our community when you come and speak to public entities whether it's the board whether it's our council

I think our young adults especially tonight are students that a great model for how you should come and it's a very civil and civic responsible way to come and visit with your elected officials so I just wanted to commend our students now because I think they set a great model for how we can interact with each other on issues and continue to move forward together in a positive and constructive manner so I want to thank them tonight thank you all right seeing no further comment I'll ask for a motion to adjourn second second second all those in favor say aye okay we are adjourned you
