amazed at how fast the summer went on behalf of central office school principals teachers and our support team members in our buildings across the district i want to thank our parents guardians and caregivers for giving us the opportunity one more year to educate and develop their child in our school system we are absolutely excited to welcome our students back to allentown school district as we embark on a new exciting school year during these last few months i have talked about our asd blueprint for success and the challenges we are faced with in this fast-paced modern technology and information driven society i share that we have an enormous challenge that we must face and solve for our students as a result of the social and economic changes that they will face today tomorrow and far into

the future in solving that challenge i have stated we must answer two questions how do we empower all of our students with the ability to adapt to the rapid pace of change that is occurring around us the second question how do we as educators give our students the knowledge and skills they need to compete for jobs and adapt to the new technologies and jobs that have not even been invented yet let's think about that for a minute how do we prepare them for a job that may not have been invented yet we believe the answer is that we must prepare them to read compu compute analyze critique work in diverse groups with others respect others and innovate the way to operationalize the list of skills in our operation in our aspirational education vision and that

is that we should we shall inspire and empower our students to achieve greatness by creating a pre-k through 12th grade science technology engineering arts and math system to prepare them for college career and civic responsibility we must be nimble we must be agile one of the new programs this year will be a cyber security certification program that we were able to pull together with the help of dr brandy sawyer and the academic team for this school year to achieve this vision we must also concentrate on our short and long-term focus and priority areas the immediate focus areas are for this school year will be improving foundational math and reading skills across the district with every grade band in the district ensuring a safe secure thought provoking supported and nurtured learning environment in every building across

the district improving our attendance rates because if our babies aren't here in school they're not going to learn anything they have to be in school every day and last but not least focusing in on our core business of improving our graduation rates is a must for the long term our asd blueprint for success will serve as our strategic north star that will guide our district priorities over the next three years our four long-term priorities are accelerating the academic performance of all students intermediate culture of the board of directors of the school district for the city of allentown for today december 6 2021. the board welcomes and invites public comment you may address the board on agenda and or non-agenda items the first opportunity for comments at the beginning of the meeting is limited to agenda

their successes some of the projects are even continuing into the new school year finally the foundation has been delivering art experiences to allentown school district students for 10 years from 2012 to 2022 the foundation facility facilitated 50 art residencies serving over ten thousand students in fall of twenty twenty one ninety nine point nine seven percent of respondents reported that their paper arts residency program at newcomer kasich's and jefferson made them feel happy calm and proud this finding suggests that the art residency program contributes to a positive school climate one of the district's goals please come out to see the asd student art at west park's art in the park event on saturday september 17 from 10 a.m to 5 p.m thank you thank you ms ortiz ms brown is there a report from the carbon

fully warned about them so that they should not tempt them but they will be caught uh open house at lcti is on october 27th uh everybody is thrilled that this year the open house can run normally rather than the adaptations that have had to be made because of covid they will be an extra effort to reach out to both fifth and eighth graders to let them know about the lcti programs and there's going to be additional special outreach to the spanish speaking community this year lvhn is offering a school-based mental health program with it within lcti it allows once a week confidential therapy sessions in school for students who are in need and it is a banner year for enrollment at the moment it's topping 2300 lehigh valley students 622 of them are allentown students

cosmetology is the number one program from all for all of the students health careers are next in line emerg emerging digital media how's that for a course name that uh none of us ever knew about it is third in line there are a few this was an interesting conversation last night there are a few under-subscribed programs and they're they're well-paying programs they are careers that people should really consider but evidently the fact that those particular programs have in common the fact that they have heavy math and science requirements has been it's a drawback all over the county it's not just from our kids and that's my list thank you very much appreciate it is there a report from the safety task force there isn't a report at this month at this time okay and how

district and at william allen high school and when i got to william allen high school i knew i was home this was where i wanted to work and make a difference in the lives of our children so a couple years after i started teaching i had an opportunity to be a building rep for the allentown education association for my building that i was in and this meant that i had to go to a meeting once a month i had to go back and give information to my members but it really turned into a whole lot more than that for me i then had an opportunity to be on the executive committee board then i ended up running for vp of elementary schools and two months ago here i am president of the allentown education association

um i really believe in the work that we do i believe in the work that you do i believe in the work that the administration does and i really just want to let everybody know that my positive feeling is that moving forward we can all work together to ensure stability in our educational community it's that stability that secures the working relationship between staff faculty and administration for the greater good of all our children thank you so much thank you very much and welcome to your new position thank you next card salome [Music] ishmael my god is that right good evening so i'm miss mael i'm director of the national united youth council incorporated based in elizabeth new jersey that's about 90 minutes from here and i'm here because i was asked to be here by

a local activist very much involved in the charter schools issues and you heard a little bit of that from him mr muhammad but my organization is here because we had a number of groups another number of individuals issued some complaints about your charter schools and it takes array of things from abusive treatment from children to some of the policies that deal with they call the room intervention room where kids are staying in a room by themselves for this amount of hours or what have you sometimes for two weeks weeks months and that kind of thing and it's in a number of things i don't know a lot of time but let me tell you what i'm gonna be doing so in the next few weeks we're going to be speaking to a number of parents

and children about some of the issues that we presented to our organization we're going to come back to possibly your september 22nd meeting with a report we're going to also evaluate the status of some of the students there's some issues around how the african-american students progress is in comparison to others so when we come back we're going to have a full report and when we finish that report we're going to come back with some hopeful solution to fix this problem we're not anti-charter certainly not me but we are pro children that's my organization been dealing with for 40 years so i just wanted to introduce our organization our concern and some of the things that we're going to be doing in your township not to take it over not to intervene but to offer some

suggestions and if it wasn't for some brave parents and some not believe i'm afraid they even come and speak before this board because they're saying to us that they don't get nowhere that you guys don't pay attention but i know how to make people pay attention all right now when it comes down to our children somebody is going to pay attention and so that's something i wanted to share with you guys i'm going to leave a bunch of my cars here to your the executive hearing is enough hopefully for everybody i'm also president of the african-american uh organization which is a national group so that's what are you the one i can give it to okay you looked at it with some haste but that's okay again i'm i'm not here to be adversarial i'm

here to seek progress particularly for the young people thank you for your time thank you very much love hennigan senior good evening my name is love hannigan senior i reside in allentown pennsylvania i'm actually here to speak on behalf of an issue that i brought up a few months ago um as i addressed the board again thank you for your time i am bringing forth the issue again of the allentown arts academy charter elementary school charter renewal um i i became privy to some information especially when it comes to the cap of the students which seems to be a big interruption as to why our charter is not moving forward and i'm under the impression that a cap is not something that can be enforced so i'm asking that the board take heavy consideration into

moving forward with the chart renewal process itself the school has been standing for eight years so very close to a decade and i can assure you that we are one of the charter schools that partners with multiple families i myself um with what you would expect an elementary school to be and and that's what i'm really here about and it kind of breaks my heart a little bit to hear that there are so many negative connotations when it comes to the the charter school systems itself i can't speak for everyone but i can personally attest to what i've seen with the charter schools that i've been involved with i'm also one of the coaches for roberto clemente charter school knows me when he can attest to the type of demeanor that i expect my young

men to hold themselves to along with the women the young women that we are a part of and raising and the school that i'm a part of just starts that process a little early and i would love to see that process to continue the reason why i'm harping on having such a push towards having this charter renewal completed is because we really want to expand one of the things that we would love to see is that gymnasium is that auditorium in the space that we have we need to build up we've got everything ready everything to move forward and the only reason why we can't do that is we need you guys we need you guys to help us and all i'm asking is to renew that charter remove that cap and we'll be willing

to move forward i i've i've invited board members so i know pat has shown up to the school and i hope that in that moment i was able to show mr palmer exactly what kind of school we were and i i hate to say that i'm hoping that i impressed him but i'm i'm really sorry that there's such a a dark cloud that hangs over the charter schools in allentown my son who was with me last time if you all remember leaves saturday to go to kutztown and he graduated from innovative starting in the starting in the arts academy and i i i just can't believe that there's this is what we are supposed to be as a community of allentown and i'm asking for you to bridge that gap and help us continue what

you expect us to be thank you very much are there any other comments okay is there any old business to come before the board yes ms harris um i wanted to bring um attention to our policy where our students um if they are being bullied if there's problems in one school if they're you know just re reasons why they need to move into another school it seems i've had to deal with so many this week for the last two weeks our parents wanted to stay in our school district they just want to stay in our school district but because of things that were going on in their neighborhoods they wanted to transfer their children to other schools in our school district and they had a hard time why i'm looking at y'all why i don't

get it it's a policy we can do that they can stay within our school district actually they can go out as our school district because we are the the the grade that we we hold but because they want to stay here they're given a hard time and so i've had two parents opt out and go to charter because it took so long for them to get an answer just to see if they can move to another school that's crazy that needs to stop um i'm the chair policy and we're going to go over that policy real quick and once we do that it's going to go to all the schools the secretary the guidance counselors the principals so we don't our parents are not going to be hearing you know what's going to take a

while it's going to take two weeks it's going to take a month one child waited for a whole six months last year and they decided to go ahead and stay another they went to charter online we're supposed to be keeping our children and if we can't and some don't feel safe in one school because what's going on in our neighborhood switch them over to somewhere else it's okay that's our job stop making it harder for our parents you know if we can't accommodate them understand some things are happening you know and some buildings are you know more support staff or ieps and others and you know then we explain to them that we explain it to them we just don't leave them in limbo so um i'm letting the staff know that whoever works with

uh policy we're gonna be working on our policy next month that's coming up thank you miss harris is there any new business to come before the board i'm gonna call this new business i just wanna i started to speak out earlier on after dr stanford gave his um presentation and i just wanna make um i'm calling this new because today this year this is a new year i want to applaud all of the administrators the teachers dr stanford your statement was wonderful i wouldn't say it was wonderful if i didn't think it was because you know me by now um but i'm looking forward to a wonderful school year i know that we have a history we've had but that's what it is it's a history and i'm looking forward to going forward i know

there's going to be many people who are going to really feel that you know you know naysayers but what i want this team this group and everybody else that's coming aboard i want us to be focused and i want us to stay positive and do what it is that we have all worked so hard to do this is i'm going into my sixth year on this school board school board members don't get paid paychecks we get paid for outcomes out of the outcomes so i know that we're not all sitting here tonight in this seat for nothing we're not sitting we're listening none of this stuff that anyone has come forth and said has fallen upon death death ears but i want the this board because it's our meeting right and the public to know

that we are moving forward we are doing better and no for me i know parents you do have choice but invest in your children invest in your school district see what it is that we have been doing while many of us have been on vacation or in our homes so i just want to i'm calling this new because it's a new year and i congratulate you all i want everybody who's part of this team to go home tonight and understand that we're gonna have an awesome year i'm not saying it we're gonna we're gonna come back and we're gonna report out and you're gonna see what allentown is doing because i said it in my first year and i'm saying it in my morning into my sixth year i'm looking forward to allentown school district

becoming a model school district so it's not what you call us it's what we answer to right thank you thank you miss conover is there a motion to adjourn ms miss harris all in favor hi meeting adjourned looks like
