003at least a half an hour for public input uh if if there's not more comment right now we may move on but we reserve a half an hour at the beginning of the agenda is there anyone that would like to provide public input well if that changes and something happens later you know certainly within the first half hour of the meeting just get our attention and we'll Circle back to you so that we can do that so um part of that agenda item Al is also announcements and I just want to take a moment uh to recognize our superintendent David Ryan this is the last meeting that we have where all of the board members are together um unfortunately David wasn't able to be here today he had another commitment but um I am very
004appreciative of the contributions that he's made to our district I think back to where we were five years ago coming off having an interim and then going for a period of time where we didn't have anyone and our seu is in a much better place he was really instrumental in building a stronger team um and that's evident by the people that are in the room today but Al more broadly in our in our schools um I think they're in very good shape I I think one of David's gifts is really having a vision and I think that Vision uh a lot of it has been adopted and I think it will it will carry on I I think our our next superintendent will have her own Vision but it will it will take the best
005parts of what we're already doing and build on that and then the other thing I wanted to that comes to mind when I think about David service is uh you know it's a controversial topic but the pandemic it was you know we asked our leader to help fly a plane and build it at the same time and somehow he was able to keep it afloat and it wasn't just him of course it took a lot of people a lot of brain power and I think if everyone had more time to sit down and draw it up with uh more time they would have done things differently but uh somehow that plane stayed afloat and are stayed up in the air um not a float it's not a boat and uh you know I I appreciate
006uh that I I saw frequently during that time you know him his ability to really think on the Fly and pull people together and use the best resources that we had to leverage that to to end up getting through a real rough time so um I just wanted to again just appreciate David and ask I know he's not here but ask if we could just give him a Round of Applause Just in [Music] thanks thank you David all right so next on the agenda we have uh approval of the minutes last time we were here is April 17th and we have minutes in the packet so I'd look for a motion to approve them uh or if anyone has any comments on anything they'd like to change make a motion to approve them all right
007so don made a motion to approve the minutes do we have a second okay Bobby okay any discussion about the minutes anything that K need to change or should we move forward with a vote okay then let's take a vote all all those in favor of of the motion uh say I and raise your hand I hold your hand up for a second just because I think need to try to get a sense okay any opposed and then anyone who's [Music] abstaining so okay great thanks all right so next up we have um administrative reports so I'm going to turn the microphone or your own microphone over to Esther asbell um to handle this section thanks sure I think we're going to start with the Dei folks that are here and uh Andre I'm turning
008it over to you and your group all right hola everyone so um this is the part where I take questions on the report correct this is report from the anti-discrimination task force that part for incident notification protocols all right so actually I'm handing it over to them thank you right this is way more intimidating having a microphone than teaching in front of the students um I'm Annie howerin I am a teacher here at the high school and I'm the GSA equality Club adviser um here at the high school as well um we're the anti-discrimination task force so we'll kind of point out who everybody is in terms of uh their contribution to the group but just a brief overview about who we are we started as a group when Senate Bill 263 passed which requires
009all schools to develop uh and Implement a plan to prevent and assess the presence of intervening and respond to incidences of discrimination on the basis of age sex gender identity sexual orientation race color marital status familial status disability religion national origin or any other classes protected under state law so we are separate from deij we kind of fall under the de eij world but um we are more on the policy and protocol side of things by state law so um our work here is to evaluate the policies that exist here at the school and update any protocols to ensure that there is no uh discrimination in any of the policies and protocols that we have in place um so there is overlap but we are mandated by the Senate bill um initially this group was
010much smaller there was about five of us on the team than Co h um we kind of regrouped and started evaluating policies we went through pretty much every policy on the SAU website so if you've ever had a chance to look at those there's a lot of them it took a very long time um so we looked at all of them through an equity analysis to make sure that we weren't um inhibiting anybody from getting Fair equal opportunities um and then we kind of grew a little bit when Andre joined the team and we had a unh uh assistant professor uh from the Department of Education uh deian Moen she has come on and helped us and kind of guided us and focused our work and we spent this year working on the protocol and
011how we address things and through that process we have brought on stakeholders from prek through 12 from the exor school district we have building administrators so we I guess you're a district level administrator we have parents we have teachers we have local psychologists we have parents I say parents um we have other community members some that are not here um that have grandchildren in the school or are just contributing members and then we have our students so we are really lucky that this year we added the student piece of it um which has been a really really um pivotal role in the work that we've done um so the uh exitor District principles and Dej team were already working on an updated protocol so we work together with them to to kind of fine-tune this
012so that we were doing work together rather than running parallel to each other and so you should have received that protocol already um I think it was in your meeting notes over the weekend what was that in the packet in there in your packet um and so that was generated with consideration of all stakeholders um that I listed before and so um um we think that it kind of represents all of our students from prek up through 12 so that they're all getting the same consistent message um that this is a safe space for all for all students and so my role in the school is not only as a classroom teacher but as a GSA advocate for the number of lgbtq plus students that we have here um and so I'm really proud of
013the work that we did this year with all of our awesome stakeholders so I'm going to pass the mic off to Kell much shorter than everybody else apparently um my name is Kelly tuy childis my role on the task force is that of a parent I have a son who is a student at SMS and I was asked to speak about my experience being on the task force as a parent um adtf would not exist if we didn't have current challenges with discrimination so that is why we're here being a parent is not only the thing that that brought me to the task force I'm a woman a person of color and a professional with varied experiences in all of the categories that were listed in the Senate bill it was important to me to
014participate as my role of a parent not only for my child but for all the students in the SAU Community using my voice to help create a protocol where students of all grade levels can feel that they have sense of belonging to learn and grow even when making mistakes it is how those mistakes are handled that makes all the difference whether it is the one who is harmed or the person who is causing the harm intended or not this group work tirelessly um in large group and in breaking into small groups based on our roles as parents or teachers and also based on all of the grade levels we we looked at it from elementary middle school and high school it was important that the parents voices were heard in terms of communication and consistency
015and this group of various stakeholders listen to understand no matter what roles we played is important that for the parents that we are informed in a timely manner and kept in the loop regardless of instances of um regarding instances of discrimination regardless of if it is my child that is doing the harming or that is harmed we are not there every day at school and we want to trust that our children are safe from all kinds of harm and that if and when harm does happen even on a small scale that we have a voice and can work to repair alongside the school it was also heard um through this group by the group of parents that the students perspective was that they wish that they had a consistent way of dealing with these things
016from elementary school through high school I know personally that my son who is in elementary school struggles to feel safe when he's self- advocating or when he's advocating for other people it was heard and felt also how the teachers and administ rators um deal with these instances of discrimination and it's hard on them as well the questions that we had in front of us when I joined the task force was how do we repair harm after it is done how do we create a consistent protocol with consistent language across all the grade levels and how do we Center all students to ensure a safe place for their physical and emotional well-being in order to thrive in school we came to a common ground after adding the the exitor team that was really really helpful and
017we now have a clear and consistent protocol with language that is that is uh appropriate for all the grade levels centering all the needs whether it be the administrative task that need to be done whether it be based on the law whether it be based on what a parent needs or what the kids are facing dayto day that none of us know about for my experience as a parent on this task force it is important that we Bridge the gaps between our roles in all the roles that each of us play and have Grace for one another this process has gifted me the opportunity to see how easily we forget the voices that need to be heard which is the students I'm going to turn it over to them because their involvement in this process
018has been invaluable they are the heart and the pulse of this community and understand firsthand what challenges we're facing in the in the community of schools you guys are up um just introduce ourselves I'm BM I'm a sophomore here at EHS and I'm the student representative of the DJ committee I'm pic pass I'm also sophomore here at EHS um I'm will Bowie I'm a junior here at [Music] EHS um yeah okay so me and Hana are both part of the DI student committee at HS and we connected with Mr Mahia um with adtf um because he had felt that the D committee was very essential to um the team of ADF and also um dij also has the values that um correspond with the goals of adfs and so that's how we got involved um
019part of the um reason we wanted to be so involved with adtf was because of personal experiences yeah um so I mean just as like a student we have a a very different perspective than like admin walking through the Halls like I know like when we first had our first meeting um like we went over some of the barriers that we experience when we try to um like advocate for ourselves and report people so like for one of mine that I brought up a lot was like when you're trying to report a teacher like that can be really messy sometimes so we spent a lot of time discussing that and we added it to the protocol where we have a section that involves like when a staff member does something um so yeah I think
020yeah you want to go sure yeah um one of the main things I felt was important when I came to this um group was that um we obviously work with goals to like eliminate discrimination and blowing and that's kind of the main purpose of the protocol and I have older brothers that had went through AHS and CMS and they had as a person of color they had dealt with um bullying and discrimination and I felt like being a part of this committee is very important because I could I can't change a past but I can definitely change change the future and for any other people that come through our schools and feel unsafe in that sense they can feel that they have sense of belonging in our schools and that's why I feel like our
021is very important um so I kind of got roped in just through what it um I kind of got roped in just through my um student voice like I am very active in the community among a lot of different groups I'm in I'm in student stand with s Camlin who fortunately isn't here tonight yeah that might be a bit might be a better idea um and so I really wanted to just give another voice give another opinion give like a another another different student perspective because I started here in the middle of Co the covid-19 pandemic so I had a very different experience than um Hannah and B who started a little bit after um so being able to give another student opinion really helped in diversifying the uh goals that we set um so
022Not only was everybody all the different roles but also different student roles student perspectives because Hannah might have thought or sorry Hannah might have thought something and but I'm might have thought something a little bit differently um and also just the idea of having students active in creating something that can last longer than um possibly us I mean I'm sure there's going to be alterations but I'm able to influence like what different events we do as a school what different events like we do as a class but this is something that's going to affect overarching more people um I think it's all that more important that I as a student use my voice to um speak up and create something that'll help benefit everybody thank you all thank [Applause] [Music] you do you have any
023questions for the task force I have a question yeah um first of all thank you that is incredibly can I say badass um much appreciated just like the way you approached it with like so many different stakeholders is really awesome and I think speaks to the strength of the protocol and reading it I was like yeah this is great um really appreciated also the like intent versus impact and just the opportunity to bring students in and like if there is a mistake not just jump to like cancel culture but like how do we bring folks into this conversation and just not jump to conclusions or jump to punishment although repercussions our UND discipline sometimes does need to happen so anyways the question is um when will it be implemented so uh we're going to be
024using next year to um provide opportunities for uh folks to learn about the protocol uh be educated on the protocol we also realized that this is just a protocol and you know some people don't know what discrimination is yet you know what it can look like so like how do they even know that when they're supposed to use the protocol so so that with next year the task force going to tackle is creating opportunities for the Educators uh for administrators and anyone to just learn about the protocol um which ties to the anti- donation plan um you know so we're going to try to do that as much as we can next year is provide those opportunities and of PDs around discrimination bias what does that look like you know and some people have to
025hear stories and so on but um yeah we that's our that's next year's plan for the task force um how many is this on how many um students are on the is it just the three of you yes there's 14 people on the task force um is there anyone on the task force that is representative of the special ed Community yes oh yeah yeah we do Ellen okay thank you yeah yeah sorry there's 14 of us there's many missing okay thank you yeah also an administrator any other question um second just thank you for all the hard work that you all put into this it's really tremendous and um I'm just curious since obviously we have school board members here that are working with Elementary School students is all the way up to high school
026um sort of how do you imagine or how does this sort of fit into the work that I guess for the elementary school students in particular in terms of reporting incidents of discrimination and bias to your point of like one it's just understanding what that is and then recognizing it and feeling safe enough to say something to a trusted an adult um I guess just insight for all of us who are working on the elementary school board level sort of what would that look like in terms of implementing in this in a way that students would know how to follow the protocol at that age level yeah so uh part of this protocol is for the administrators who the student goes to to to report it um you know what's What's Happening Now students would
027go to either assistant principal or teacher and and they'll it's going to follow that same step you know the student going to go and Report something and hopefully the assistant principal the teacher would see it and but okay this is the protocol we're going to go through um part of the educating uh the community is also holding Community conversations for uh the community not just Educators and administrators but everyone to come together and understand this protocol so that would be part of next year as well um you know it's it's just educating everyone on how it works um and I think right now students might say something at home so if we're we're having Community conversations and the students are saying something at home then the the the caregivers and parents would know you know
028let's contact the school let's contact us the principal and use this protocol yeah than so one um one of the thoughts I had about this so first of all thank you for the work that everyone's done I agree it's really helpful because it it captures some things that aren't covered by some of our current protocols or maybe even other policies they're not really drilled down in this way one of the uh I don't know if concerns is the right word but one of the things I would say to look at this next year as you implement it is I guess I would see this protocol overlapping with the bullying policy and overlapping with uh Title 9 and those and the bullying policy has very specific timelines for reporting and how quickly reports have to be
029done and yeah if reports are extended the investigation is extended there's a protocol for that in terms of it's part of state law and the same thing with Title 9 it has certain timelines that are a part of that and some of those would differ from the timelines that are in here so I think you'll have to see how that plays out because I can Envision a a case of discrimination that could be implicate both Title Nine and bullying I mean depending on the right circumstances and there'd be some that wouldn't implicate you know certainly not maybe not title n and maybe not even bullying that would apply but you just would want to pay attention to that so that see how they all fit together if there needs to be a tweak in the
030protocols you go forward yeah no thank you for that and um we we have a lot of discussion about that as the task force you know what the principle assistant principal's principle and different stakeholders on the different policies and we did actually tweak some of the days on our on the protocol originally they were shorter or longer and we tweaked to match the bullying protocol in terms of how many days to respond to something and and so on um so yeah that is a huge conversation that we keep having and and and how it matches uh with the with the bullying um convers I want to put there as well that the difference between this protocol and bullying and sexual harassment that are kind of through the state like mandated um with those dates is
031that uh this had student voice in it you know and when we were creating this protocol we were also um making sure that we Center people who are usually discriminated against which is the historically marginalized identities so that that was kind of like the difference when we were and we kept coming back to it why don't we just add on to the bullying why don't it's because we needed something different because those were not working for a certain population thank you uh I just want to Echo again kudo's awesome work I love seeing people of different backgrounds and roles working together to create something that will be used hopefully not frequently but used when it needs to be used um the one question I'm still relatively new to um theou and also Alma and I
032did notice that Alma um is sort of one of the ways that we was proposed at um tracking incidents um and I I'm familiar with uh the importance of tracking in since I work in a medical um in the medical world and it's very important to have a very clear clear algorithmic way to track these things so if we need to go back but I was just curious um one does alma have a functionality that that is um like a standard practice that it's used for are we using it like are we um um novel in our use of that particular um incident and then secondly is it would it be associated with the particular students or staff involved or is it like a Alma file for incidents like this and maybe those are details
033that haven't yet worked out but I'm just trying to learn more Chris knows I'm always asking question about that's the person over there um and I would say that they do have a function for people to so uh administrators to go on and report an incident what kind of incident and one of the tags is bias um so so that is a feature uh that we currently do have Again part of educating is working with everyone to to make sure that we're using it across the district which we are again almost something new for us this year so we're all learning all the parts of it but we can use a part of it to to collect this data and to report incidents um and and that's where other incidents are reported you know like
034if you know someone's late to class or or missed something or or had their cell phone out that that Alma also is used for that thank you I I just have a followup to that so it is directly tied to the students involved yes it's not an overarching just general statistic it's actually reported whether it's against a student or yeah so so so like all the other incidents it says the initiator the who was affected who was The Observer that's the language I believe we use for Alma yeah whoever's reporting can input that and Associate it with the people involved if the teacher doesn't know and just reports it they'll report the location and then will be followed up by Administration but it's not as in depth as the doesn't have the in-depth function of
035the that the protocol has in place so it's more of like an initial like starting documentation that the the report has been started and then the protocol comes in to make sure that all all the te's have been and all and who has access to that I think the administrators at the school just the administrators um and some yeah I think teachers don't have access yeah teachers don't have access to it yeah yeah yeah I think too just to clarify because I do work in healthare so occurrence and incident reporting is what we would live by basically so is part of your question like are students able to input into the system that would be my question too like because having to reach out to an administrator to report something is potentially a barrier to
036reporting so how can we make reporting easier for those involved and maybe some anonymity in there like are there systems that we could look to to to make it easier and more friendly for reporting because that's if there's a lot of barriers we just won't get them right yeah so so I believe for right now um Alma is you know for administrators to use when someone comes to them with um there is a Anonymous reported link on um the SAU website and um and part of the there's there's also if you see there's a link that HR is creating so if someone wants to report a staff member a student they go they go directly to that link as well so keeps the from having to talk to another adult before submitting that um so
037yeah that that's that process so far but right now they can either fill out the nous link or talk to an adult uh educator or administrator who can then put that information in yeah thank you Andreas first of all I want to thank the task force for an amazing job and your reporting tonight to us was very enlightening thank you very much I also wanted to recognize Andreas the report that you provided for us in our packet it was very detailed it included not only the work that you've done this past year but the work that you did when you were part of the co-op District as well and uh those statistics were very enlightening and I just wanted to recognize your your work on that so thank you very much thank you thank you
038yeah and I uh I as was right I was supposed to do the report and then but um I misunderstood uh I just want to say that uh uh the the DI work the report you know it's we did a lot of great work and it was through the the support and of the DI committees in the schools being committed taking time after school and they uh to to focus on Di and different PDS for educators um and then I I I specifically want to highlight all the people that you know uh want to were committed you know to the students so Adam Krauss at the high school Dan provos Beth Kuda committed to to like the student work and and and helping the DI committee work as well and and and um you know
039Miss holler in Annie at with the GSA um and then also I want to give a special uh shout out to at the middle school Carol trescot and the counseling team for supporting the Affinity space there they've shown up to all the Affinity space sessions all the counselors they break up to part and just keep it going um so I just want to give a special shout out for them for making this work possible for the students thank you what do you have sorry I have a lot of questions yeah um going back to the protocol because I think it's fantastic my question is is I I'm going to be honest I just have concerns about something going into Alma and does it go into Alma after it has been investigated or prior to what
040happens if something is is found to be a false allegation that type of are are there checks and balances there yeah so they're supposed to go and and hit resolved or or change whatever the results were the the the assistant principal administrator whoever right now it's assistant principal at the schools handling the the situation so they would go in and and resolve the the incident um I have one more question yeah because your report was awesome um yeah this is a it was a great report and I thought it was a really good um uh snapshot of where we where we came from and where we're going um is there because one of the things that was was brought about um in the law and um in the discussion is specialed children and um kids
041with special needs um in this report there wasn't a lot of that is what does the future look like for working on the inclusion of those children um well I'm working closely with uh Renee and Ellen on you know all the programing that's already done and all the support with the you know the the pair of professionals and the special LED specialists that already doing the work so just connecting with them and like they there's already been a bunch of work for uh um students uh using special ed services for for many years and I'm just tagging along with them you know supporting in in the organ in the uh you know programming that they're already doing and and when they're working with students so that's that is happening um so that's what I would
042say when it comes to you know that it's it's it's it's part of Di and and we're working together um with the services and and the the resources that are already there for for uh students using special ed services yeah um I had a question that is kind of about all of these things um in the protocol you talk about responding um based on intent and impact and I know that um there's been a couple incidents recently where at the elementary school level kids have been using racial slurs like their swears like they don't understand that it's a different category of bad word um so has there been any conversations about getting ahead of that at that level um to kind of educate them as to why those words are different than just like swearing
043yeah I I know uh some schools I think have done talks already in the classroom with with around language and and and how words can can be harmful um so those conversations already have happened some schools um did it as a entire grade some schools did it classroom specifically and I know they're communicating with the communities with the parents of of those uh uh grades or or or schools when they they do that talk um and I'm supporting that as well just you know being there and finding resources and and and also supporting the parents to have that conversation at home the parents and caregivers like hey here are some resources you can talk to your child at home with um when the incidents do happen I am involved and try to provide as much
044support for the caregivers as possible um and if the student if they want me to meet with the students I meet with them as well if the parent wants me to okay thank you yeah um this is great and it was also just it was just like wow how much you've done and um just want to recognize there's only one of you and although you're supported by that team of people in the schools and the community this is a superum job and so I think it's something for us to be thinking about is the SAU 16 of how we can continue to support you Andre and all of the people that you work with and doing this great work but this report was very comprehensive and pretty incredible um one of the it was it's
045I guess less of a question but more of an aha is that knowing that in the last meeting and um I know it's come up in the um Communications and Community engagement committee around the um the hope to do a strategic plan um as Esther steps into her her new leadership role and looking in the looking ahead section um just maybe a hope that as we endeav into the new strategic plan that just as we want Communications and Community engagement to be maybe its own goal and also integrated across the plan as a goal in terms of tangible actions I would say that I hope that in creating the deij goals and strategies that the Dei vision is sort of integrated throughout both how we approach that plan um who we listen to U making
046sure that there's divorce representation in the community in that process but also that perhaps it's its own goal but also part of the whole plan you know and all the other goals too because I think it's we're at that point where it's probably still needs to be a both and yeah um so I guess it's more just an aha as I was reading that page and a hope that um this you know we can integrate the team yeah no thank you um and I would say that as the senior leadership team you know discussing about the planning eser we'll talk about that more but dij is a question we're asking to people like hey like how how do we get all stakeholders involved in this process in this in this plan so um Esther might
047you know talk a little bit more about that um I don't know what but uh uh just uh let you know that we are having that conversation as senior leadership team on how to make sure we have the different voices included so thank you for that um so I guess we're just going into report we're like blending into report yeah yeah I think this isort um I I think this is essentially your time to ask any questions or make any comments about anything that is under Andre okay I have three report questions yeah yeah um first report question there was an increase from 2021 to 2022 versus 2022 to 2023 of the number of incidents for um I think about race discrimination do you think that's just because people were more comfortable reporting or like
048knew how to report more than the previous year yeah I think there was you know Alma I think was a huge help with people putting stuff in and um just the more conversations we had about biases and discrimination and hearing the truth that what's happening to our students I think people just started reporting more and again these were already happening before um you know the first was me through notes and meeting log second year we had Alma so it's just going to get we're going to keep getting more and more numbers again it's not because they were not happening before but you know we get to see now we get to collect this data okay what do we have to change in our community so that these students aren't dealing with this and as you
049can see in the second year there's more um categories you know you have sizeism you know there's people reporting different kind of things talking about people's weight and and how they look and then there's other category which is people tagging stuff they knew it was biased but they didn't put a description of what kind of bias it was um so that's that's pretty cool great thank you um my second question is kind of yeah what you were saying this is a superum job and I think it's worth acknowledging how personal this work is for you and that it's not just a job like this goes so much further beyond that um and just recognizing how much you put into this um is incredible and along those lines like is there discussion about supporting you with
050an additional staff person in this role I have not had that discussion yet I haven't brought it forward to ask for you know so what what would that discussion and is that something you're interested in is that how would that disc is yeah what would I think uh a support in in this position would be beneficial for this position you know having someone who's going you know support with programming or even you know I'm in the schools every day dealing with incidents you know and and and when I say dealing with having learning opportunities with the students um and so on so I think that's I think a support person for this role as well would be super beneficial like any you know would want help doing our work um but the I think the
051the heaviness and how much work this does from dealing with incidents to programming to you know uh Community engagement to dealing with policy it's it's all um uh uh work that could be supported by by another person um but we haven't I haven't brought that up and we haven't had a discussion yet um and I and I can uh say I I really appreciate you you know bringing up that it is a huge deal personally you know as you know all of you know all of you probably received but I've gotten Deb threat emails and and received emails calling me the nword and the FW and voger names and um to a point where like I had to send my family to Boston not to be in this area when I'm not around and I
052don't think people understand like it is it is more than just my role it's attacking every identity I hold when people say these things and they send these nasty emils where I don't even feel safe keeping my family here I have to send them away for a while so I I think thank you for for just recognizing that that is the reality and it's conversation we're having across the state with other did directors how do we support especially uh people who hold identities that they're doing this work for you know that it's just more than the row it ends up taking a toll on your heart your mind and all and how do you support that and we have that conversation you know so I think just thank you for for recognizing that in public
053that it it really does affect someone personally yeah so I think just you know how do we as a board um have that conversation further about another person what would that look like and then additionally yeah how how else can we support you as a joint board what can we do you know to support you if there are other things that you need or that would make you and your family feel more comfortable um I would be very interested in having that conversation thank you uh just in the along the theme of more people working towards this goal um one question I had was the this task force sometimes task force can be task oriented by definition and that's sort of the end um do we know if this group or some version of this
054group is going to continue doing work I see a lot of head shaking so awesome and then similarly the um on page four the the different school-based deij committees and those so I'm assuming those people um are Representatives uh in each of the buildings but there's like somewhat regular meetings where folks come together to discuss sort of districtwide yeah so so these are the the representatives that are represented on the SAU wide committee and then each of them are part of a DI Committee in their schools so we we do meet monthly mon yeah to to talk about programming uh what's working in your school you know what PD have you done for your teachers how did you bring people in um how are you dealing with certain incidents in your schools there anything but
055we meet monthly and then shared learning so that we're across the district we're supporting people does that structure seem to be help helpful and workful yeah and and that structure was also already put in place uh before I got here and that's what created I the position I like them working together to to yeah thank you what's next on the doctor for the task force do we know so I'm hoping that the task force uh um again I'm not the task force we discuss as a team yeah um but you know focus on the education of of the community um stakehold you know Educators administrators and all that on the protocol and discrimination and so on yeah we can work together to to plan those out but we'll discuss as one last question um along
056the same vein there's a lot of amazing work that's in this report is this because I'm new here I guess I can play that card is this a will this be made public yeah I think yeah yeah it be it'll get put on the the website it'll be in this report that everyone has the the board report that people have access to and we'll also put on the DI site for people so I wonder if a lot of people will read it in total probably a small percentage of people that would read it front to back so I wonder if you have the opportunity to maybe do like a a summary of like the highlights or like an executive summary in some sense like just really culminating it to be maybe a one pager that
057might able to reach more people um so that they can see if you don't have a lot of time but we really want to know what's going on in the dii world the world um maybe something like that be made available widely and even outside of the schools too Community Wide or because there's a lot of information in here yeah and it can be point we can have a link right a full report but something you know short in one pager might be helpful too yeah thanks for the suggestion hi there so I'd be in favor of the full report and then maybe a shorter report you know in the superintendent update or something with a link to the full report but on the protocol for responding to harassment and discrimination where would can that
058be viewed and is that something that would go into the student handbook yeah so so it will go into the student handbook again we're not going to like go full on you know we're moving in slow as we educate folks but it it on the people can find it on the website also um the anti-discrimination plan this would be underneath that plan okay so that would be on the website but we we're hoping that this would go in the student handbook once we want to have as many educational opportunities first before we start putting it out public so that people understand it um yeah if that makes sense yes thank you yeah all right thank you thank you thank you Molly Finance all right so in your board pack at the very very end was
059the line by line detail of the current year SAU budget and then in my little section I summarized it for you so right now we're tracking to be $1 15,520 under budget um and in the summary I put what makes up that so if it's a negative it means it's overspent if it's a positive number it means there's Savings in that section this does look really familiar to last time we presented because not much has changed our budget doesn't have a lot in there so did anybody have any questions lady yes you know my question but I'm going to ask it in public sure um so because of how the SAU budget is funded the money at the end of the year that's unreserved never comes back to us automatically is that accurate so it
060doesn't go back in your tax rate so what will happen next year is when in the fall when we create the budget for the following year we'll have discussions on how much the assessments are to each distri District so we would make the assessments to each district total less than the budget if we're giving back money to the districts um I was wondering if the joint board would be interested in setting up a system where the default is that the money goes back to the districts automatically and instead of holding some back like we have been for like retirement we have a separate capital reserve for that so it's very clearly this is what this is for is that a question for me or it's a question for the room I I I I think
061it would not be bad to have the assumption that the money is going to come back because of the way this is funded we can't do it in a way that it works for the rest of the school boards does that even make sense to anyone else I couldn't hear what you said I'm sorry so um Cent ly there is an amount just out there that we held back from last year's budgeting process um in case there were retirements this year it's not part of this budget right now it's just like held back um I would like to instead of just holding those things back every year establish a specific capital reserve fund for whatever that's being held back for and always return the rest to offset the assessment in the fall so what you're
062saying similar to like what we do at the Town level when we have different if we have extra left over it goes into this fund this fund this depending on the town in newfields we have a special ed fund you know yes is that what you're saying yes yeah and we do that in the towns because if you don't do that it goes back in the tax rate whereas the SAU budget it doesn't lny when you say the this amount that you're referring to that's held back I just want to make sure I'm understanding that and then understanding Molly's spreadsheet so on Molly's spreadsheet it looks like there's a $20,000 provision for retirement and there's no retirements plan is that the amount that you refer to or is that something else no the number that
063I'm talking about is not on this document so last year um I don't have my Google slides in front of me but sorry it's okay it's okay we we came up with a budget and then we there was three things that we did not assess to the towns one was the the software project cuz we've known that's been coming down the pipeline um the retirement and then we also gave back a portion of the fund balance to offset the tax rate so we did not raise the assessments as much as the budget so when you see next year's budget the assessments are less than the total budget because in order for us to spend it we have to appropriate it so for us to do that software upgrade we have to appropriate it in the
064vote but we're not asking the towns to pay it next year because we're using the fund balance to pay for it but even though we have the fund balance there we can't pay for anything unless we appropriate it same with the towns and so the reason why we fund the trust funds in the towns is because if you don't if that money isn't put into the trust funds it gets swept back into the tax rate so in the SAU budget it's more like a bank account it sits there until it's used so each year we can only spend up to the appropriation that's in the SAU budget and we look at the fund balance to say okay who's coming up for retirements down the pipeline do we have a software upgrade is there any other
065risk out there that we might need funding for because just like the roof project at EHS we don't want to ask for it all at one time right I mean it doesn't sound like there's a simp it sounds like there's pros and cons in either scenario and so I would just be a little I would want to make sure if we were to change what we've been doing that we have somebody like Molly or somebody with financial knowledge to make sure that it's the right thing to do um or that it would make sense I'm not and also the the trust funds are with the trustee of the trust for each town we don't really have that in theu so we have to work can we have an ETF with this board we don't have
066any trust funds with this board but could we well we could look into it but we don't we'd have to put it with one of the trustee where's the money this is what report is it on it's not it's it's the one that we use in the fall when we make our new budget and I guess that's this is my exact point is that like we can't point and be like this is the money that we've set aside for the software upgrade and that's why we're holding it and this is the money that was set aside for retirement and that's why we're holding it and I think it would be more transparent if there was a way we could literally point at those things and be like this is what this money is for as
067opposed to just you could share that report let me yeah I I could just hold on for a moment please hold on just so we don't just have a free-for-all discussion just if you can please raise your hand and just so we can call on different people I know Helen has been waiting patiently to make a comment so let's just raise our hand and talk one at a time so Helen thank you Patrick uh I hear what you're saying ly and I understand it but I think probably this conversation would best take place and we can all be thinking about this we have a budget advisory committee for the SAU budget each board me sends a representative so it might be something that we could uh in the fall when with that budget advisory committee
068meets just as it does for the co-op when the budget is being created to take a look at it and then Molly could do some research on it between now and then to discuss the pros and cons of of doing that I just wanted to get it in front of the whole the whole board could be I agree y That's all sorry even though this probably should be talked about some more else based on your comment um lety is would it be the same recognize that there may be challenges to establishing trust funds changing the way uh money moves back and forth and so forth would we achieve the same goal through uh more transparent reporting that is my intent yes so there may be a way to do this without changing the way things
069run and so absolutely for example Molly uses the phrase give back even though money's not moving mhm um but that's sort of the way it does work by reducing the next year's assessment MH so it sounds to me like there may be a way to accomplish this goal without changing the way things technically work but just communicating it better absolutely okay thank you and I can easily add all that information here um it just sometimes has been confusing in the past looking at the current fund balance versus the current year any other questions who's next Dr [Laughter] [Music] Bennett awkward was it something you said it wasn't you no I hope not um well good evening um as you saw in your board packet I updated you on the continuing of training of students in
070Orton Gillingham which is a resear research-based model for instructing all students in literacy so I think this SAU should be so proud of the number of classroom teachers that are trained at in will start the year trained in ort Gillingham K through2 I think that's huge and powerful and the teachers want to do the work and they're doing the work work um and then also leads into um our mtss work which is a 3 to 5e plan mtss is that multi-tier systems of support um I work with Dr andris a lot on this and tomorrow we're working with the reading specialist for our fourth meeting this year to really tie up that work so we think about multi-tier systems of support we want high quality tier one for academics and high quality tier 2 for
071social emotional and then what does tier two look like what is tier three look like and if we have a building with a tier four which would be the self-contained State approv programs which some of our buildings do um so we're just continuing that work through the summer we want everyone to have a system that aligns all of our buildings do things a little bit differently and you know how each building is wonderfully unique in one building you might have a school counselor running the mtss you might have an assistant principle the other one and that's okay but we want everyone to be using the same language what does tier one look like how do you define it who runs it what are the data collection systems and how do you drill down because everyone
072filters into our middle school and then they filter into our high school so end of two years in this role still doing a lot of mtss work um and so that's really my update and I will take questions okay then thank you can I ask you a question of course I'm sorry I didn't hear that's okay I'm slow that's okay so I'm I'm curious I know that that you keep saying that um our teachers are going through professional learning um for OG yep um and it is a research-based instructional method for kiddos to learn a very systematic strategic way of learning and decoding reading right yep um I I have kind of a twofold question one is you're saying the word trained so trained to me is something that is you know they go in
073for professional learning and they come out and they've had the experience or in the knowledge to be in that space but there's also another level that is certified OG and I'm curious to know how many teachers um that are working with our special ed group who are certified as OG and therefore those kiddos who need that extra layer get that certification from the teacher versus just the train for two weeks we we do have some teachers that have gone through the twoyear training to be certified in ort Gillingham um we have not found the need for that and we haven't seen the difference between teachers that are certified in or Gillingham or teachers have gone through the 30 hours of training and are overseen by a reading Specialist or outside consultant Marian nice um so
074we haven't invested in a two-year training and the teachers haven't invested in the two-year um cohort that you need to get certified in Orton Gillingham instead we spent money on investing in Wilson 4 and other um tools that they can use there ort and giling training in to um provide instruction for the students so there's different theories on the certification and you can speak to people at the doe you can speak to International experts such as Mari and nice who has said we do not the certification is not required for high quality instruction it's the 30 hours of training and it's the and it's the ability to Deep dive into the data collection and that your your the curriculum that you're using has that data collection tool which is why we bought the Wilson 4
075for our for our intervention cuz it drills down a lot deeper so all the on top of are all the classroom teachers also getting the OG training for the two weeks yes all the K through second classroom teachers are getting the Orton Gillingham training in um the scope and sequence and all the materials that go around it and if you haven't seen videos of kindergarteners breaking up open syllable vowels you need to see it and just email me and I will send it to you because there are some schools that are already doing it they did the training last summer and they did it throughout the year which is why we're getting more and more classroom teachers wanting those tools I've never met a classroom teacher who didn't want to do right by every student
076in their classroom and they are really appreciating this professional development and they're loving what the classroom data is telling them at the end of the year about their students so it's powerful work and I'm sure the kids are pretty happy with and the kids are pretty happy so my my follow-up question um to that so if if the results or the data coming in um is impactful and we're seeing the growth what what's happening with the 10% or the 20% that it's not working with and how are we wrapping around those kiddos if it is working for the greater good that's fabulous but what about those kiddos who are not in that space well all students will whether or not a student qualifies for IEPs or specially design instruction isn't going to change what we're
077hoping is that students with specific learning dis disabilities that require this methodology in order to make progress are getting it in their classroom first and then they what we've seen for a model and 've only done this for one whole year in some of our building so can ask me again in a year from now see how we're doing um they're G there it's repeated instruction so their classroom teacher is teaching them how to read how their brain learns how to read best which is so powerful for students and then the special educator is repeating it or the reading specialist and we're seeing growth we're still seeing growth we want to shrink that 10% we would love 100% of our students to be proficient so this is the model we're we're shooting for so IEPs
078aren't going to go away and I don't I don't want to give the message sorry if I Mis skewed my question it wasn't about IEPs it was about multiple instructional practices versus just OG right so are there multiple instructional practices to diversify the toolbox for teachers if OG's not working and the only thing they have for professional learning is OG then how are we helping those kiddos who it's not working for it wasn't necessarily ANP question sorry yes we we have other methodologies and we do have reading Specialists and directors of instructions that are experts and drilling down and if OG isn't working um then we we would have Specialists on an IP team that would be designing different interventions and we we are so fortunate in this SAU that we do have access to
079a variety of tools um and they have they do have a variety of um PD so they don't just get or galing him but this is a big deal for classroom teachers to learn a tier three reading instruction and apply it for the whole classroom CU what is what is great for some of our most struggling Learners is great for everyone which is that Universal Design for Learning what works for the neediest child would work for all students if we put that in our classroom and they could do it in there so we're not closing the door to other interventions what what we our job is to make students learn and have them make progress and if they're not making progress we meet we look at the data and we tweak it and we meet
080and we look at the data and that leads into that MTS work and all the elementary schools spending some time this summer with whom M they chose from their building to drill down on what does MTS academic look look like for us and what does mtsf Behavior look like what tools do we have who's doing the work and what do we need to Pilot our look at for next year thank you you're welcome any other questions it's good stuff thank you thanks I think my my uh report was next and I really spoke to um we do those certified educator meetings for recertification all of us all of its senior leadership team and um um it just became really clear to me as we were doing those with the impact that it's having on student
081growth I know all the boards had their own um building presentations around student growth and that's what I'm referring to when I say uh the growth of our students and staff are together um the professional opportunities that they have just as was described which then has a direct impact on our student growth really stood out this year to me in those MLP reviews and I know other folks too particularly around the Dei work um and the math instruction some literacy that's taking um getting stronger even more this summer but there's been a lot around elementary math instruction and the ready math and the I ready and I know that you saw in your presentations that that is beginning to have a a real impact on our students so I just wanted to highlight that at
082the end of the year growing our system we uh Andreas referred to the strategic planning uh senior leadership team is kind of interviewing if you will different approaches to strategic planning just really briefly of course there's the traditional model where you kind of had a a steering committee and then we kind of moved from there there's um a combined model where you have a steering committee and then little committees that all come back to that steering committee and um then there's another approach which right now seems to be I think uh what our senior leadership team hopes gets us a higher degree of uh Community engagement where you really um work hard how you have a planning team and then you really isolate it to um about two and a half days where the community
083comes in and commits to that two and a half days maybe a half day a half day and half day on Saturday and you have things like child care and all the other needs that we consider and it's a real very focused process but it's not that monthly meeting I remember when we did this with um Mike Morgan you lose membership over the course of a year because it really there's a lot there's a lot of uh meetings if you do it that way and so we were looking um when I went to to the asasa conference the National Conference out in San Diego there was a presentation on this so we had them I had them present to our leadership team last week and then we have another um company qual Trix that will
084meet with us and present their ideas um bottom line is I I hope to come up with the team with a thing that an approach that seems to fit probably will look different and not as traditional um because our success rate has not been strong in keeping the membership for a year to meet every month it's really difficult I think for people but to really promote and plan and get the word out and really uh recruit membership for a more a very intense but condensed whether it's two days or two and a half days or what that looks like um to really get all the voices um that really feeds into our Dei right our approach so I'm hoping that we could get 300 people here for a short amount of time right um so
085that's kind of the the three different models we're looking at and as we assess that we'll come forward in the fall uh with a plan and a price tag so uh that's where we're at right now in strategic planning it's certainly at the Forefront of the senior leadership uh process but um just heads up there will be a price tag to it so perhaps some of that Reserve people spoke of earlier might come into play so that's for that is any questions on that Esther what's your what's your timing looking at like to make a decision on the process and then when would you anticipate getting it started yeah it really depends on a we we've talked about this is um we we want it to be a very good process right we we want
086to go slow enough so that we get that high rate of community and membership um and so part of what we've learned so far in the presentations is um that that planning team that would hopefully begin to meet after the board approves the process so we would present the process to the board in September the joint board and then move forward from there with um that intense process if that's what we decide to go with as a board would probably be that April time frame so we would have a strategic plan the end of next year anyway we slice it it's going to take us a year really no matter what model we use um the issue will be when we bring the price tag if districts will have to build that into their budgets
087and we will have to do focus on the communication committee for next year and strategic planning the following year and build it into budgets or how that's probably really going to with I would look to this board in your function as Finance um how you want to do it so that's the plan is to bring that forward in September to this joint board and then have your input and questions and feedback and how how quickly we can proceed some will depend on budgetary restrictions um as well as if you think the process is going to be the process you all want to participate in thank you any other questions all right uh I think up is Miss uh Dr andrewski sorry Chris good evening everyone uh in my report hopefully you captured how awesome our
088staff and students are with all the things that are happening in our buildings tried to really demonstrate that student Le uh instruction and assessment that we are seeing uh it's been very powerful uh watching it at our elementary schools but wanted to highlight the the senior Gateway at SST when a student made their parent come to tears in 30 minutes about how they've learned and how powerful that learning has been for them over the two years at SST but also their their educational career here at uh in exitor so a lot of great things happening um One Thing Really uh positive is that our participation rate went up in our sa in our uh both sat and also for our state testing as you know we get zeros for anything that's under 95% so I
089know doc uh Mr barow and his administrative staff worked one-on-one with any parent that was opting out and just asking why having conversations and some of it was was calming fears of of the parents of where the information was going but getting to an understanding so I really appreciate that we reached out so that we would demonstrate all of our students that were there but also respect the fact that if a parent wanted to opt out to find those uh alternative activities I also wanted to highlight in there just the the growth of our of our um teachers you know pushing that degree level to the doctoral level but eser and I just came from a meeting with 14 leaders in in our SAU who are next uh February will have earned their uh cert
090certificates and either as a principal or as a curriculum coordinator so that's 14 people homegrown that have been taking this as a cohort that will be able to take the next steps either you know in our districts or elsewhere so I just I say thank you and I appreciate that in our all of your local budgets and our budgets to support that extra learning or or support the learning that our our teachers and administrators are able to do so thank you um and I'll open up to questions uh in regards to our our staff and students great job first of all thank you for the report I just had a question around um I guess like timing of the different kinds of tests right so I have two kidos in CMS and one of them
091just went from State Testing right drove right into I ready this week Y and I'm hearing that feedback from other parents and so totally in support of both both tests just to be transparent but just curious about like level of exhaustion when they're and time away from instruction when we're not spacing those engagements out and wonder if you're hearing that similar feedback or if there's anything that we could be working on to kind of I guess look at the whole of testing so each school's a little bit differently and they really try to space it out or allow the time so that students can demonstrate their understanding throughout the whole year because that's what they're being tested on and where there was such an emphasis on on math math you know giving as much time
092with math because there's certain things that they feel that they need to you know finish working on our students with before they take that test then you're right we jump right into our our diagnostic testing and that's why we've often said why can't I ready be our diagnostic because it's talking about student growth and we've pitched that to the state and been shot down no you have to take this a test where I ready in other states can be your state test right it's not here so we're we're Bound by those timelines of the state so we could start super early if we wanted to but again is that going to be an accurate reflection of what our students know I would say no so we try to hold it to the end uh larger
093schools much harder and being able to find that space and the ability to do it but each Building looks at that looks at the needs of the students looks where they're at and then we'll create that schedule accordingly and also try to keep it with as less amount of interruptions in their learning as they possible so that that three times a year that we do the IR diagnostic that's really helpful for us in our students and our placement but we can look at that uh growth uh that growth Continuum across the um across the year where the state is that snapshot right at that time and that's used for State comparisons but it does give us you know a validation against our own internal so we hear it we understand it um I think you
094could talk to any educator and say do we have to keep assessing because there's so much and we would like to limit it however we're Bound by law and then also what we feel we need for future instruction and looking at what we do internally um yeah I just wanted to say uh my kids went to that National Honor Society science fair and I think we shut it down it was so great and um I love that opportunity for like younger kids to interact with the older kids cuz that's really what made that successful is that the older kids were as excited about the egg drop as the little ones yeah and that was driven by that teacher and the student saying we want to do more so that just the power that our kids
095had that they wanted to do it with younger kids and she said great let me connect and so she's like how do I get this out so she sent it to me I sent to my principles and I think we had 65 people there on the first night so I would anticipate seeing more and more because that's what we're hearing and and that's it's all driven from our kids just want to say thank you you guys are asking awesome questions tonight so I appreciate that so and the rest of the team got a bunch I usually get the most so I really appreciate you giving some to the rest of the team tonight thank you have a good night I miss you uh and the last part is Heather Gage as our human resource officer
096and um she has outlined that hiring season is here and there's 28 certified openings as you can see last year we had over 50 so it's almost just about half um you've also see that teacher contracts have gone out uh the sum programming as far as growing our system certainly the uh human resource office is going to be doing some training and and getting some information which will be helpful around FMLA and the Ada um and considering with Andre and the Dei so again trying to keep that thread through everything U consistently is working well uh we are going to lose cat Rashard she's been here since 2019 she's retiring so I'd like to thank her publicly she's done a great job for us and um we will miss her for sure and then I'd
097like to thank all the boards for their policy work 60 policies is a lot so thank you very much um I don't anticipate there'll be a large amount uh in your June meeting there will be some but I don't anticipate it'll be a ton so you might get a little breather there and kind of a um precursor we're going to meet as an SLT senior leadership team this summer and try to devise a maybe a more efficient system a lot will depend on how many laws pass and impact policy this year there was a lot that impacted policy that may not be the case it's looking like they'll be hopefully less right now um some of those have gone off already off the radar um so I'm hoping that it will be less and then
098that may allow us to look at some policy for sau6 in this joint board I know Patrick and I have met and identified maybe some policies that would be also appropriate to have as a joint board so that's kind of the other policy work that's previewing in the fall so we'll keep you posted on that but thank you for going through those policies and being uh arduous and determined to keep us up to date so I appreciate it thanks any other questions on Heather's report all right thank you all right so before we leave this agenda item just make a quick note that there's also a report in here from the superintendent I'm not here to feel questions on his report but um one of his uh the evaluation committee had said as one of
099the goals is that he provide an update um particularly around issues of transition for the April and May meeting which which he's done he did this one in writing since he couldn't be here today but um it has some details and some of that a lot of his goals and Report overlaps with the reports that we just heard because he's you really trying to orchestrate some of that and make sure these things are coming together and then the other part it also overlaps with the committee reports which is the next item that's on the agenda so let's get into that and I think that will um be a good transition with that is there any update on the community excuse me Communications and Community engagement committee I know the next plan is to meet in
100September right I think that's just the status of that right you have't there's no other update or anything that's happened since the last meeting okay uh policy committee I think we heard we just heard from Esther probably provided an update on that is there any other update I don't we don't really have a chair for the policy committee that's a board member we have representatives and really Heather's sort of the coordinator so we're probably all set on policy too um Esther probably provided a good update on that one Safety and Security task force is there any update on that committee or that task force I should say I can give a a quick update um at the last meeting uh we did some group work some small group work uh I then kind of coated
101and coded that information and sent that out to the boards individual boards so um those folks on the sstf would have uh something to refer to if they needed that as well as we also um did a lot of research around sro's and elementary schools and uh as the boards have requested some specific boards we've shared that also so if anyone like that research or is considering that please let me know um I know the couple that I work with we've talked through that but certainly if there are other boards that like that information let me know and I can give that to Chris or Dr Ryan to push out to those boards but really the focus is to look at those Trends and those will be on the agenda for our Safety and Security
102task force meeting in the early fall great and then the last Sai committee is the superintendent evaluation committee I think Andy was going to give an update on that one yeah so um we met last week if I can remember correctly yeah on the 12th um Allison is going to be uh the chair of that committee uh we discussed um the closing out Dr Ryan's evaluation uh she is going to send uh evaluation form to all the chairs this next week um and then for you guys to discuss at your next board meeting and then bring it back to the next joint board meeting in June um and then we're also setting up timeline for next year on working with Esther and her goals going forward we're going to meet monthly as a uh committee
103to make sure that we stay on track our goal this upcoming year is to get feedback back to the hands of everybody here in a shorter time frame to have more evaluation also get a lot more feedback directly from you as well Esther so I think that about covers it I leave anything out all right any any questions about that committee yeah we we don't have a joint board meeting in June I think you probably meant the uh committee maybe yes the committee I'm sorry oh thank you no that's not a problem thank you um but my heart started beating again there's no there's no more join board meetings this is the last one but but I believe all the boards have one more meeting yes yes so that that's it is so everybody needs
104to um discuss and get the feedback for their boards before our next meeting on the 16th my apologies confus I I do have a question normally the co-op Bo because of the size of the board there are nine of us we we normally do the uh rather than have a discussion in our meeting every year what we do is the board I send out information the board members then give me feedback and then I or in this case probably will be Bill gothier who's the representative of the co-op board writes up the report so I'm assuming that that still will be all right for us to do it that way yeah great coordinate with Allison on it but yeah I will okay thank you [Music] okay um all right so next we have old business
105we have um so we talked about the last meeting the implicit bias training session and uh the plan to have it in the fall and we had talked about trying to coordinate a date over email that didn't happen so we're hoping we could coordinate a date tonight um I had asked the senior leadership team to identify a couple of possible dates and I think you found some that that seemed workable and then we're going to have some discussion and try to select a date tonight um so we have two dates to offer you as you know the staff is getting um trained and and running through that in the October professional development day so we stuck with the same month with the training for the board I wasn't clear after the last discussion whether folks
106the majority of folks wanted to add it on to a meeting or have it stand alone so one date to add it on would be October 16th which is our which is our traditional third um Monday of the the month so um that would be uh 5 to 6:30 with a short break with dinner and then a regular board meeting um and again that joint board meeting October really is that is the budget so you probably would have your public hearing at 6:45 and then the meeting to follow um or the other thing is October 23rd which would be the following Monday which means you'd have two meetings in a row two Mondays in a row um and that would be a standalone with a start time at 5 or 6 or whatever the board
107wanted so those are the two October dates that don't um con can have a conflict with other boards that may meet during the week or other committee meetings are already set up uh traditionally so that's what we throw out to the board I can't remember if um we discussed zooming this and we do this training on yeah we um I I know I would normally look to Andreas but we already have this conversation because we had a snow day on a professional day and really this is the kind of conversation that will work better in person in small group not on a zoom format so thoughts or go ahead um I just had a question about the do we have the scheduled meetings for the joint board for next year you said the regularly scheduled
108we usually do the third Monday and it's a September October January May so that's already I remember that right might be November in there there's either four or five depending on sometimes there's an additional meeting for some purpose yes we talked about maybe moving to January February perhaps but yes yeah yeah we move them yeah I'll just say I I I think just given what you shared especially about what the agenda is for the 16th that this is work like we need to come in with our full selves and our like full minds and bodies and just commit to it so I um I think it would be very difficult to do that and knowing that in a very very long meeting so I guess I would put my hat in the ring for the
10923rd why don't you make a does someone you want to make a motion I think it's I think it's helpful to make a motion have a discussion under a motion do you want to make a motion that to move to have the anti implicit bias implicit bias training um uh with the Joint School Board on the Monday the 23rd okay do I have a second motion October okay so I saw Patty's hand first Patty's the second okay so now let's have discussion on the motion yes um I would second that third it because the co-op board will be meeting their regular meeting will be on the 17th the following night and I think we'll be they we'll be crawling out of here by the second night so I I appreciate your comments on that thank
110you other comments about the motion to have the training on that night the 23rd what about a start time did we you didn't make that as part of the motion I don't know that that's flexible but do you have a do you want to move or do you want to have any discussion about the start time then we can amend the motion what what time would work six o'clock go ahead um do we know how long it will last I mean I know there's work to be done but like it's an hour and a half right Andreas 90 minutes 90 minutes 6 o'cl is when we typically have meeting times is that is usually a good time 6: to 7:30 6:15 7:45 roughly yeah be home by 8 at the latest so so 6 o'
111what we'll be looking at on the 23rd uh so would this be a meeting it's a it's a training a non meeting it's a meeting yeah yeah we can post it as a workshop but we would still start a timer for public for half an hour that was my question yeah you'd have to work that in that's true you have to work that into the meantime so it's a good point yeah so for that reason I would say start at 6 in case there's public comment we don't get pushed even later right okay that's a good point Thank You other thoughts on the motion so the motion is is to have the training on the 23rd workshop on the 23rd and amended right Heather amended to start at six or be more specific to start
112at six yes amended to start at six okay and Patty you second you're okay with the amendment right okay all right then no more more discussion let's take a vote all those in favor raise your hand say I I I anyone opposed one opposed okay I'm sorry I didn't even get to hear from you okay um any abstentions okay all right so then we have that vote uh all right so is there any new business that we have was on the agenda yes uh this was in Dr risk's report but uh and I know he intended to mention it but he forgot to congratulations to suy Central [Music] [Applause] School so kudos to the staff Administration and the staff administration of the SAU for supporting us that's great yeah great any other new business all
113right 7:31 oh no really quick not there sorry it might be something to add for is there any talk of adding students to this joint to hear their voice we have a student Sawyer Camlin so I received I received yeah he's he is on the uh the co-op board it's by law now we must have a student representative he's done a Phenom phenomenal job um I received a text from him earlier he was getting off the bus coming home from a lacrosse game as the meeting was getting ready and he couldn't attend tonight but yeah we do have a student rep does that have address your question yeah all okay other new business right now it's 732 and we join the meeting thank you thank [Music] you
