001i couldn't be more proud of the parents in this district everyone everyone but the opinions are so different from each other i could not be more proud to be from danville than i am tonight thank you so much i just had to say it thank you i'm so proud because if you had watched some other board meetings and i attached a link we were the example of how you get it right we may not have agreed but we did it respectfully we spoke we heard one another we were the example of how to get it right and i really wish we could have had that on youtube okay i'm sorry that is so true because i've watched those other four videos yes good evening dr ashton board of education dr gaddis i'm darice hightower president
002of the danville education association i appreciate you giving me this time to speak about the negotiations that have recently taken place the dea ratified the negotiated contract on june 11 and the board of education did the same in a 4-1-1 decision that same evening excuse me they can't hear you in the back oh i'm so sorry i'll use my teacher voice i use my teacher voice that's better so typically when a contract is ratified the two teams will meet after the votes have occurred to finish tidying things up as we prepare the agreement for printing these are low stakes discussions because the hard work of bargaining is finished so they generally receive little attention this year however post burning conversations with some members of the board of education have created problems with our process and
003they require everyone's attention by now and i've given you a packet and hopefully it'll flow with what i'm saying by now i'm sure that you are all aware that i was contacted by board member bill dobbles on july 1st he sent me a text message asking me to meet him for coffee or coke to discuss some ideas on july 9th i contacted dr ashton about meeting with mr dobbles dr ashton stated that he appreciated me letting him know and that mr dobbles had no authority to offer me anything on behalf of the board of education however i should still meet with him to hear out his ideas on july 16th vice president alan rivers and i met with mr dobbles and mr long henderson another board member during this meeting alan and i were presented
004with the chart that's first in your packet we were asked what we thought of it allen stated we would speak with our unicef director steve vaughn and we would let them know by sunday july 18th many members of the dea have been informed of this meeting between allen mr dobbles mr henderson and me they had a copy of that chart and a text message train began the text message falsely stated that i turned down a pretty sweet deal for the teachers to receive more compensation above what has been ratified it stated to text me between noon and six on sunday to tell me to get a fair contract suggesting i guess that the ratified contract that gives all bargaining unit members the same increase is not fair i was contacted by about 16 people my
005question for you mr dobbles and mr henderson how did these people get that chart you just gave it to me on friday i spoke to no one other than those in a need to know position about our meeting and i only sent the chart to our unicef director even if you were authorized to bargain on behalf of the board this would not be acceptable bargaining behavior as previously stated i'm not one to bargain in public i personally feel the relationship between the dea and the dis and district 118 requires trust between us as decision making partners in bargaining we need to trust we can confidentially speak candidly with one another as we work toward an agreement unfortunately i'm now in a position in a position that i must decide to let the public know exactly
006how this all began so let's start at the beginning on monday april 5th you should that should be our next paper i sent a formal demand to bargain a successor agreement to president bill dobbles vice president dr ashton and superintendent gettys it clearly states that the d.a would like to bargain a successor agreement our contract states that either party wishing to negotiate must notify by april 1st i was informed that president doble said it was too late to file the intent to bargain the district was on spring break during the week of the first and i sent the letter on the first business day of our return and it's noted our bargaining demand asked for a reply by april 9th no reply was received by april 9th on april 13th another letter was sent that
007should be your next paper via email to president doubles vice president ashton and superintendent geddes it clearly states that the da wanted to extend the date of exchange and that there have been no reply to the april 5th letter this email was sent to the entire board i received a reply email from dr gettys stating that she would give this information to the board during the closed session of the april 14th board meeting on april 14th i received a follow-up email from dr gettys go ahead he turned yep indicating the board was willing to bargain but wanted an alternative start date at no point during this time the did then president bill dobbles and i have a conversation about bargaining not one he did not email me text me or call me so i find
008it odd that now on july 1st he decides he wants to meet with me on april 28th the new board was seated dr ashton became the board president and i began working with dr ashton and dr gettys on negotiations the dea team met we presented an extension that we thought was fair for all our members as you can see from an email dated may 11th between dr gettys steve vaughn and me dea originally asked for 2500 per bargaining unit employee we also thought we were bargaining a single year extension our membership had indicated when surveyed that an extension was their preference the reply that i received was that 2500 was too much and what caused penalties from the pension systems there was later a counter offer from the district i believe it is dated five
009twenty six of two thousand dollars for one year and step only in year two the team knew there was not a chance the second year would pass with only um step and said as much to the district eventually we were offered one million dollars for the second year and we split it evenly between all employees covered by the collective bargaining agreement due to the amount of this extension the two thousand dollars that this board and the dea ratified the tas must work an extra day they have to go to work before the certified staff because of the penalties that could be incurred however there are no penalties and no accelerated payments for the tas compensation imrf which is the illinois municipalities retirement fund unlike trs which is the teacher's retirement system has extended exemptions built
010in to help curb penalties and accelerated payments with the tas working the extra day it qualifies the district for such an exemption penalties are the reason mr henderson stated he voted no to the contract extension presented he has mentioned numerous times that he is a steward of the taxpayers money this contract as presented avoids both penalties and accelerated payments should this board decide to give dea more money for the certified staff as presented by mr dobbles and mr henderson i'll gladly take it i'm not going to turn down money so if y'all want to give it to us we're going to take it however given the information that at least 39 if not 54 of our staff members would cost the district millions in penalties from trs is this the best use of district funds
011i recognize many people will say it's not the da's problem to figure out and they're right it's not it's yours you have to decide if you want to spend millions in penalties to give us the extra money however when the district has shelled out millions of penalties what will be left i look at two years down the road when it's time to bargain again there will likely be a new board new board president probably a new dea president will people be rift will the board oper offer a freeze what happens i have submitted a proposal to the district to use esser funds that's the money that we've all been talking about that's not sustainable it goes away does not come back it does not go in our budget we cannot promise salaries on that but
012with that money i did ask that the district give every employee covered by the collective bargaining agreement one hundred dollars per year of employment in district 118. it would be a cash bonus it's not money added to their salary but a sign of appreciation for being here in district 118 and it gives them something to my dea colleagues thank you being your president is not an easy job it's not one that i take lightly i'm no better than you and i do not put myself above any of you i have given you my phone number many times to call or text if you have questions or concerns i have nothing to hide i have no reason to lie none whatsoever and it's all presented right here the union belongs to all of us i recognize
013that we may not always agree on a decision that is made but i implore you to reach out and ask get it for me get it from alan we brought to you the best offer we could negotiate that's it we brought to you what was given to us no more no less we appreciate your solidarity are there any questions thank you [Applause] all right since there weren't any questions i'll just say we appreciate the work that you guys do we appreciate all the staff we appreciate everybody okay it's tough times the go negotiating's tough we understand there's a lot of feelings out there but um we do have everybody which we truly do have everybody's best interest uh at heart so we do appreciate everybody okay that should bring us to item school calendars good
014evening dr gaddis board of education i'm john hart i'm the assistant superintendent for elementary schools and today i'm going to ask for your approval for the 20 2020 21 calendar which yes has passed so that's a um just really has to be submitted to the state so this is just something that we do yearly required of us yearly so i'll start there i move approval second so this is just procedural it's very procedural okay so we have a motion and a second any other questions or discussion uh see none one more question yeah go ahead when we approve this account the newest calendars were already approved they were three years a pro approved i'm saying in march march we always have changes we have no changes to that i have one today that's the next
015item up for bid okay okay so this is just 7a this is 78 yes okay so you that's you know that's what you're voting for may have a uh roll call vote please mr doubles yes mrs hyland oh yes mrs carey we're scared i'm sorry we messed up we messed up in in when we when we let's ratify this and then i mean let's do this vote and then i i recognize yes i messed up okay gotcha come on i'm sorry okay let's let's just do this let's vote and then we'll take care of what we need to do yes i got it too it took me a minute i'm thinking where are you what i missed okay yeah you're right yeah she said yeah i said yes mr henderson yes mrs schreider yes pastor
016miller yes and dr ashton yes motion passes 7-0 you know i apologize when we approved our consent agenda in that we actually hired a new principal for mark deadman and i failed to acknowledge mrs stacy salad thank you i know we are out of order we were just taken back by miss cherry's comments and a little emotional back there and um so thank you for for fixing it for us but tonight we have very exciting news with miss stacy sellers up here just a quick little background miss sollers she's a dak grad eastern graduate she has her masters in administration she's gained a lot of administrative experience in our district which is very exciting and when she was the ap assistant principal at northridge elementary school and this past year she led garfield elementary school
017as an interim principal she did a phenomenal job stacy is very well known for her strong work ethic she has a passion and puts forth a tireless pursuit to give her best but also expects the best from the students and staff she has a very large vast um knowledge of curriculum she's there with interventions ranging from kindergarten to fifth i taught with her way back when early 2000 um she's been at different grade levels she enjoys mentoring staff very much both with unstructural interventions but really her thing is behavioral interventions as well she brings with her over 16 years of teaching experience three years of administrative experience she is very well groomed for this next position at mark dimmon elementary school as the principal we are so blessed to have you and we are excited
018to see what you bring thank you [Applause] thank you very much good evening dr gettys and board and district 118 family i am so excited to be um leading mark dinman elementary school um it was my home i was hired in 18 years ago in district 118 as a teacher at mark denman and i taught there for 13 years before the transition to south view for fifth and sixth grade and then moving into administration so i am super excited um i do have just a cute little story to tell you 18 years ago when i became a a new teacher in district 118 the principal at east park at the time was mrs val gilbert and one day we were at the copy machine and i was talking to her about going on to get
019my master's degree and she's like oh what do you want to do and i said i want your job so i mean it's taken me 18 years but here i am and i'm super excited i appreciate the opportunity and all of the guidance and encouragement that i have received from the district 118 family and administration and come see us anytime we'd love to have you thank you very much congratulations and thank you thank you thank you very very much so we do certainly do appreciate that should i introduce myself again yeah please calendar 7b please 7b it is um so the school calendar we are um asking for a modification if you will of the school calendar for um pre-k which would be pre-k half day at southwest and pre-k full day at edison and
020all this does is put us in line with the county schools so we can have professional professional development days the calendars have changed and and here we are today so um i ask for your approval for those changes i have a motion i'll move approval i have a motion and a second decide whomever you like and then let's have a roll call vote please a question first what are the changes mr hart because they instead of having so many one-hour dismissals this year and actually the next three years there are three half days built in and half days caused a a problem honestly with transportation sorry chris um so it really comes down to um those three days and um that will also puts us in line with the county schools so we can do
021things together with the candidates those are days that the county school is off is that what i'm hearing yeah i believe two of them yes okay thank you roll calvo please mrs carey yes mrs schreider yes mr dobbles yes pastor miller yes mrs holler yes mr henderson yes dr ashley yes motion passes 7-0 thank you very much brings us back to number eight our return to school plan number 740. all right this is going to be a long section i'll tell you now and in order to prepare for next school year we have to evaluate the data from last school year so that is what we are about to do and then we will talk about how that data relates to curriculum this curricular decision for next school year so that's what we're about to
022do right now just wanted to kind of warn you guys like this young lady mary owen button is going to be the most excited about this section and she's been given free reign to talk good evening dr ashton dr gettis on the board um yes i am very excited to be up here to talk about this stuff i recognize that everyone does not feel the same passion about data and curriculum as i do um so i'm going to try to be as thorough and concise as possible but also share my passion with you because what you're going to see tonight represents what all those teachers talked about and how hard they've worked and the administrators and simply what everybody's done to get through a pandemic related to data so we're going to start with data
023i love data i'm not sure why i but i do okay so what we're going to focus on is really how we use data to evaluate student performance including i'm reading this to you this is not what you're supposed to do as a teacher but i'm going to do it real quick but not limited to performance on standardized tests successful completion of the curriculum attendance dropout and graduation rates and so each of this was a little bit tricky the last year some of this data a lot of this data is missing so we relied a lot on what we could exit tickets from the classroom assessments that teachers gave conversations that they had with kids and that's really hard to quantify and give you information on so um this really small print is all the
024data that was recognized in that slide so the first thing is standardized tests so you guys will understand standardized tests when i say um the it used to be igap cogat or um igap um iar sat it had lots of names and we it's always our favorite time of year in the spring when we give those tests so the last two years those tests haven't been given because of the pandemic we are going to give the iar in the fall when the students returned that we should have given last year so we'll talk more about that as time comes up it is a no stakes other than we are required to give that assessment this year so it'll give us a good um we probably won't get the data until i would say second semester
025if we're lucky at that point the kids will take it again in the spring and that will be the grade level test that they take the students did take the s.a.t last year but not the year before the s.a.t when i created this slide the sat data was not available i got an email today that the sat results are out that takes a lot of time and they still have to be verified so they're not that data isn't ready to to share with everyone yet they there's a fun word called embargoed and i don't even know if it's that yet but um that's that's where we are okay so the next data source that we look at is successful completion of the curriculum and really that's formative and summative assessments two of my favorite words
026um and the best analogy for this is a formative assessment is when you go to the doctor and they take blood tests and and um your temperature and they talk to you and they kind of get that data and they say okay you know what you need to stop eating red meat or you need to stop eating so much sugar or you know what gluten isn't the best for your body so they get that information and they change what you're doing and see how you improve that's a formative assessment so when we do that in education we ch assess the kids as they're going along so we can make curricular adjustments to make sure that they're getting the just right fit for education okay then we get summative assessments and please forgive this ahead of
027time it's the autopsy it's what we look at after we're done with all of the instruction and we really can't fix anything so those are the summative assessments and those come at the end of a unit those are our iar tests that we're giving at the beginning and at the end of the year this year so those assessments are really personalized for the teacher in the class we do try to get um where all of the second graders might take a particular assessment that the teachers have created or all of the history teachers at the high school and so they look at that data and kind of determine what is the next best step for the kids and that data is really hard to quantify on a district level and especially in the middle of
028a pandemic something that we do um look at during a normal school year is something we call student learning objectives or slos and that's where we have all of that data lined out the teachers get evaluated on that data and that would have been something that we could present less loss were not functioning last year because of the pandemic so the next thing we look at is attendance rates and i'm really excited because i have some data for you so our attendance rate um for 1920 was 93.3 so we always base last school year on the information from that we have from the school year before so like what we're planning for this next school year that started for northeast today so fun is what we learned through the pandemic last year so right now
029that the attendance was is not available the official attendance rate won't be available until september of 2021. i'll be happy to come back and share that because i know everybody wants to know um or it might be somebody else um and then the so that's not available our dropout rate was nine percent for 1920 and then again that data will be available our graduation rates for 2019 um we're okay that's i'm going to look here because it's a little bit bigger my eyes aren't helping me so the four-year graduation rate is 70 the five-year graduation rate is 73 percent and the six-year graduation rate is 77 and again that data from last year will be available in september and then i wanted to show you this next slide because this is the states we talked
030about all the information that we get from the state this came out of what a couple weeks ago not even i think a week or two ago and they said okay we usually give you a report card and tell you how you're doing and that's what parents look at when they want to move to the city or to danville or to any community this is available on every school district in the state that's a public school and basically what they're telling us is you're not going to have any of your data this year so your report card is going to look exactly like it did the year before so we just wanted to show so the unavailable data that's usually presented on those report cards is right there okay that's it for the data section
031so do you have any questions or do you want me just to move on to the next part okay could i interject for just a moment yeah please sure you know i uh i am really pleased make sure my mic's on really pleased to see that uh we're talking about this tonight because it just happened that last monday at the noon rotary there was a concern that was addressed to chief yates our police police chief who was speaking to us and regarding what could be done to make our community uh more attractive to families or as mr schroeder has said how can it become a destination and a destination district and it was brought up at the meeting by a realtor that that zillow which is one of the uh i don't know you call
032it website or uh i don't know whatever anyway uh and other similar websites really rank our school district very low as far as you know they they look at things like i don't know it's one two and so there's a lot of questions about well how do they come up with that you know where where do those rankings come from and you know i've recognized that uh you know that uh and i've said this many times that the state test scores don't always represent the learning that occurs in our district it just doesn't i mean our boys and girls i mean my son went through this district both of my boys one's a teacher in high school was now an optometrist and they weren't very good test takers so that you know there's there's that
033uh but at the same time we have to recognize that that's how our district is being evaluated and seen and it's just you know one of the main metrics for those websites and in may of uh 2020 in preparation for the evaluation for dr gettys at that time which was unfortunately derailed by a fellow board member i collected some data from all of the isb report cards for the past five years and since tonight's uh presentation is on student data and you know i mean the information that miss button just passed is is in isolation she just shared this past year uh i have and for my fellow board members i'll pass that down but i have copies if anyone would like uh miss hightower would you mind check help pass these out anybody wants
034it [Music] the but this is a more comprehensive uh list of the past five years it and since again since tonight's presentations on student days presented isolation and again as miss bunt said it's very minimal because we don't even have test scores yet uh i'm providing this information to you for the past five years because i believe it's relevant to to her discussion this evening and like i said this information is from 2016 to 2020 and it's things that mrs button has looked at all the time she delves into this all the time and it and it gives you uh as our as she as i believe the next slide talks about the superintendent goals and what she is to meet on can we go to that next slide mr button i have it on
035we are we are talking about kids and you know i just want to say to ms button and to ms truax that i know that you are making all the strides possible to see that the necessary resources are given to the teachers to have professional development to make sure they have up-to-date materials and we as a board administration staff need to continue to delve deeper into the situation and evaluate this data to see how we can improve the achievement for our students to meet their goals so that as it was mentioned earlier to meet our mission of every child reaching their fullest potential so that's just that's a five-year snapshot and this information again is from the illinois state report card and it's also from our ethnicity report here so thank you for thank you
036again okay so the next part of um what we do after we get the data we spend a lot of time reviewing what we're doing and making adjustments to it so the curriculum and instructional review process begins each spring semester prior to the upcoming school year and by spring i mean january december after we get that mid-year data we've got our beginning of the year data we have mid-year data and we start really looking at okay what do we need to start making strides with the next school year and then throughout the spring and summer adjustments are made to curricular materials based on that data we have lots and lots of conversations with staff members the early release wednesdays that are sometimes annoying because you have to find sitters this is when we do that
037work and and we really need that time to do that work to dig in and and do um what what we can to make adjustments and make continue to make things better um and then there's dedicated time for professional learning so teachers are constantly learning and having conversations they will attest to it the ones that are in here um they love the or they love the professional development days right right everybody but that's what we do during that time they'd rather be with their kids but it's always it's hard it's difficult to be in the classroom teaching without having time when the students aren't there to look at the data and then make adjustments to what you're doing so that's why that time is necessary okay so what i did in this next section is
038just really break broke down what we did um each semester starting in the spring of 1920 to kind of follow the curriculum process so prior to march 12th we kind of had and if you remember my march 12th is when there was a full moon because we were all worried about it it was right before spring break and then the pandemic hit and we shut down so prior to that day this is what we were working on we were really concerned with some of our data and reflections from the teachers about phonics um we had adopted a new series in reading in elementary we really felt like the series was going to be a good fit for us but any series that you adopt never is the full picture of what you need to do
039and we were discovering that the phonics piece of that was really a struggle for the teachers and for the students it was time for us really to look at new math materials we had had our series in elementary for quite a while also middle school high school and so we were really starting to dig in and look at those types of things and then we really started talking a lot about culturally responsive teaching and to be clear about culturally responsive teaching what that means is that you are it is not the same thing as critical race theory so i need everybody to understand that but culturally responsive teaching means that you understand the students and in your classroom and what their what resonates with them so if i've got a classroom sometimes i would have
040a classroom that was more heavily swayed to boys than to girls and so i would need to make sure that if i was teaching something and the boys were really resonating with it i might need to to really kind of bring in some things that the girls found just as interesting as the boys did or um you know if we have kids that are from rural areas and they really um understand we're talking about weathering and erosion and they really understand that because they live it then i've got to bring in some urban examples of that as well so you understand what your kids need and what they what resonates with them to be able to teach it was my favorite thing to do at edison um so the next thing that we talked about
041are multi-tiered systems of support we were miss stannis and miss bailey and i i did it again we're really um really really digging into this with the principals um and the teachers and all of the special education staff and the instructional coaches and what that means is that we have tiers of support for students and so those tiers of support are like most of the kids respond to the core and that means what we give everybody so again if you go back to the doctor example when you go to the doctor most people are going to respond to a change in diet and so that's what you want to do first because that's going to mean the most it's you're not asking somebody to take medicine it can make a big change and a big
042improvement and it works with most people sometimes a change in diet isn't enough so they might have to do a change in diet and add some exercise so that's the next tier so in the classroom we give everybody the core and then if that doesn't resonate with the kids if that's not meeting the needs then we add a little extra piece to the kids that need that okay so then going back to the doctor example you've done the diet you've done the exercise but you you you need medicine those things are helping but they're not helping enough so you might have to add some medicine to kind of help you out or it might be you know a supplement of some kind so you need that third thing to make your body work the way
043that it needs to so in the classroom we do the same thing we add that third layer of support for kids that the core is not really working as well as we would like for it to then we add that intervention piece to kind of bolster the core and then we add an additional intervention piece so that's what multi-tiered systems of support work and not only does that work for academics it also works for behaviors okay the other thing that we really have been focusing on for several years is k through 12 writing um a lot of the teachers if you talk to them about smekins their eyes are going to pop out and they're going to get really excited because we love our smuckins ladies that come in and help us and so um
044they they we've done a lot of writing with the teachers that was something that um that teachers identified as something that they wanted support on and we do a really nice approach i think with that where the teachers are given all of the support that they need and they're able to take and pick and choose from that what works best with their students and what works best for them finally my one of the most powerful things that i think we have in this district is avid every single kid in the district is able every single one of our students is able to experience avid avid stands for advancement via in individual determination it's in all of our schools k-12 even some of our pre-k teachers are really great at using those strategies and then there
045are groups of students when they get to middle school and high school that do get some targeted um extra avid and it is one of i could talk about it all day so i'm stopping myself right here um if anybody wants to learn more about that just let me know but that is the goal of avid is to prepare students for any choice that they make beyond high school so whether that's military whether that's college whether that's a trade they will have the prerequisite skills that they need to be able to tackle those things it's not necessarily um academic skills other than its note taking how to like um looking someone in the eye how to make a presentation it's those soft skills that are really important to everyone so that's what we were focusing
046on and then it was march 13th so mark beginning march 12th the curricular focus literally changed overnight i have never so there's and i don't know how much we want to get into this tonight critical race theory if that's not culturally relevant teaching means that you understand the students that are in your classroom and let's say i've got a student that um they really gave us the example with the boys and the girls yeah yeah go on and differentiate between critical race theories which is not taught purely yeah so yeah i work for my family and i might sleep and i need to be a teacher and be aware that right my the student sleeps in the morning because they worked all night supporting me you gave me that example right i mean that's that's
047what that that's what culturally relevant to me what was um and then what would i do in the situation where that child could not turn in the assignment wasn't that what you you did and then i would have to have extra time to turn yourself in you know yes mom or dad was working or it was a single parent or wasn't that your example that is something that was one of the exact giants and then i said well what are you going to do you're going to make exceptions for everybody and it's it's understanding your students knowing what they need to be successful in the classroom to engage them in learning so that they become more motivated to achieve rather than demonically so he he doesn't have that incentive to turn in an assignment when
048it's due he's going to get extra time so how many people are going to get the extra time i don't think it's a question of extra time all the time it's a question and just no no i think it's a question of just knowing what your kids are but i digress because i feel like we're getting off yeah yeah this is kind of getting off the track of the presentation and if you have a question please contact them yeah they've okay no i think it needs to be a public discussion i don't think it needs to be a one-on-one i think it needs to be a public discussion because i think a lot of people but we're not sure we're not teaching we're not talking about yeah we're not doing pretty well but we still
049have questions about it great but great but now this is the presentation about something else well you could have said something in public comments or i mean some you've wanted to put critical race we don't teach it so that's i mean i don't even understand why we have to have an agenda item for it but it's really getting us off the track of the presentation because it's not even it's a similar kind of stated thing but it is not the same at all so anytime anybody asks any anybody about it then it's always a closed you know one-on-one and i unders and i understand but the point is it's a we have to get and i don't want to cut you off because but it's not the time this is not the time to have
050a critical race theory discussion not now okay so do we come to one of these board meetings are you going how do you like if you wanted to address a lot of people like question and answer like we're doing right now when do we get that opportunity when is that time so that we all can we can all have that guy it would need to be a different types of meetings we'll have a discussion and we'll see what we can do to give you that opportunity it's not just me everybody needs to you means everybody okay okay but i mean everyone who asked us a question about critical race theory dr you coping dr hart answered every single one of you and for some of you you got an hour and a half long meeting
051one and a half hours but we all need to hear it but not everybody was asking the question but we all need to handle you you know what what we can do he's charged i would like you to make a youtube clip so that you can have a conversation about critical race theory and that's the uploading okay and then in our next public comments if you have comments we can take your public comments so then we have to launch a youtube video and then we have to come back and have the public comments what would you like give us a recommendation well my question my question is are you only asking about critical race theory are you asking about what she's talking about culture it's part of the curriculum no incredible area is not it's
052not anywhere okay yeah it's only at the university level i know i've heard it i've heard it but a lot of people don't really believe that we don't believe that it's at this college level or it's just academic i am not standing alone we can't just we can just keep saying it i mean we can say it a hundred times and i'm not being flippant here but it we don't teach it it's not in our curriculum i mean we can have a discussion about it and you can ask us a hundred questions but please can we move on now because really okay i mean we've discussed this and we'll see what we can do okay that'd be great so can we move on thank you okay okay so beginning on march 12th so when there
053was the full moon and then the pandemic um we had to switch what we were doing overnight so it took off the focus of those things that we were working on temporarily and then we had to figure out how do you teach kids when they're not in front of you and so what we did at that time was organized grade level groups to meet remotely to discuss instruction and by that i mean we organized the teachers into grade level groups and we made sure that there was somebody that would kind of lead those discussions and then come back to us with questions those teachers worked so hard to get information like they worked collaboratively across all of the buildings in the district to come up with things that the kids could do at home um
054during the pandemic when we were first trying to figure this out and we didn't if you remember we didn't even know how long it was going to last we i think our first thought was okay we'll get two weeks we're gonna get a two-week spring break and then we'll go back and then it was no okay end of april and then we'll go back so we kept having to adjust and change and try to figure out how to do more and more and more and it was heart-wrenching the other thing that um we did is we made sure that in the grades 5 through 12 plcs continued and plcs are professional learning communities and that means that teachers that teach like content get together they look at data and they they champion what um what
055the kids need as a group so we made sure that the teachers had time to do that work as well we also determined academic communication methods and these are things usually take months months sometimes years to figure out the best way to do it like when we look at something it'll take a year or two to kind of get it implemented to make sure that it it follows the curriculum that it's the best method to use and then we pilot things and then maybe they don't work as well as we want them to when we try something else so in that time we had to quickly determine academic communication methods understanding that some of our parents didn't have access to computers some of our parents were really savvy on computers some parents had um just
056normal like a phone that they had limited data on some could talk forever on their phones and that some were getting you know aware of where to find communication and others were new at that and so we had to quickly determine what we were doing at that time and again this is march when we're normally getting ready for the next year so we were trying to figure out how to redo everything that we did in march we also created the remote learning plan that was something that you could find on the website it explained it was the communication that we use to explain to families exactly like if this happened this is what we need you to do this is where you can find this information this is how we're going to teach this this
057is how we're going to reach out about that and um if you need this this is where you go and so that plan was um i think when we rolled that out that was a long weekend and i think we had it out on a like three days after we worked all weekend and got that done and then um we created safe distribution practices to ensure that all students had access to curricular items needed for instruction so not only did we make sure that that everybody had access to food because that was a scary time because we weren't sure if we were going to have access to grocery stores if that was what that was going to be like because we were hearing um some of the places were shutting down or you could only
058go at certain times but we also had to make sure the kids left on friday they didn't bring what they needed home with them because we didn't know we weren't coming back so they didn't have their textbooks they may not have brought their reading books home with them they didn't have pens or pencils crayons those things that we used to teach and so we had to figure out how to get those things to the students and we had lots of generous donors and lots and lots of people that gave of their time when again we were out there you know people were out there parents were reluctant to families were reluctant to come in their car we didn't understand what was happening and so we weren't sure how much we should be around each other
059and we were trying to make sure all of all of those the kids had what they need to be able to to teach so that's where we started then as things rolled on um while the teachers were helping deliver instruction to students at the same time they were preparing for an upcoming school year that would likely include remote and hybrid instruction and still at that time at the end of the spring semester we didn't know what this school year was going to look like we were some of us were very positive we were going to be just fine and go back to normal and we're really hoping that that was going to be the situation but we had to prepare and we didn't know what we were preparing for we didn't have that data so
060we were learning we were doing lots of research how do you deliver instruction on a computer what do we need to do that what do we like what what are different sample schedules that you could implement we didn't know any of this we hadn't done any of it and there wasn't a lot out there to really help figure it out so we had to really put our heads together and work collaboratively to get that done so one the other thing that we did is we provided lots and lots and lots of professional development on related topics so we learned some things ourselves things that we couldn't learn quick enough we brought in experts from you know other areas and we inundated our staff with everything that we could think of to help them and they
061grasped onto it and really it was impressive what they did one of the things that we did was um um started this s'more so oh that is not it i don't know i'm gonna just go back okay i apologize that that is it may have okay anyway litha reeves um over there helped us create the s'more and she gets that out every week so i send her all of the information that needs to be on there we have guest s'mores where people come in and that what it is is a lovely electronic newsletter and it updates the staff each week and gives them opportunities for professional development it um gives them resources that they can use um and and we try to put like a um an encouraging message in there as well so those
062go out each week and the nice thing about them as well um is that they're able to the teachers can go back and look at um previous s'mores to get to all of that that data or information then we developed virtual summer school so we want knew we needed to offer summer school because our school year was interrupted and so at the same time that all this was going on we developed a virtual summer school we had never done this before we didn't know what it looked like we weren't really sure how to do it but we dove in the parents and the families were great the students responded the staff responded and we figured it out and we did virtual summer school and there i have some coordinators that are really helpful to me
063and i i would be remiss if i didn't mention them angela wilson um steve i'm going to go blank on names because this is my i know this is my panic is i'm always going to forget somebody's name when i'm up here um steve martin and then this year those two helped again in addition to um angie mccool chris jaraseski and eric nethercott and these people start working on summer school like in the spring and they worked their tails off both years they're they're amazing okay so then came summer of 2020. so all of that stuff that we just talked about happened between march and the end of may so this is what happened after may so we do something called open gyms some of you probably are very familiar with an open gym as
064it relates to athletics my husband is very involved with athletics at dak and so open gyms are when you come in and you get to you come in you get to use the facility that you normally practice at but you get to practice on what's what you need so what we did is we've done this for a couple years the teachers are we open up our building last year we did it virtually but we open up our building across the street and the teachers can come in once or twice a week this year we've done twice a week and they we have as much support there as we can coaching materials they have access to everything and we are there to answer questions and they get prepared for the next school year and so it's
065it's quite a popular thing and we figured out how to do that virtually last year we continued to give professional development throughout the summer avid it was huge with what they were able to provide for us it was overnight they had resources ready on teaching digitally that we were able to capitalize on they provided professional free professional development to us that everybody was able to to participate in if they so chose um and then um we also utilized our own district staff we had some some experts some expert teachers and and um instructional support staff that came out like they they just stepped forward and started helping other staff and became real leaders when they may have been quiet before so it was it was so neat to see that happen and then when we
066had holes that we couldn't fill we utilized companies to help us we also created a virtual instruction committee that's what we do when we we're trying to figure out how to move forward with something we always get committees together to get as many voices those include our computer resource people and those are staff members that are teachers they're in the classroom but they also help other teachers with utilizing technology we lead teachers which are unit leaders um division leaders and then we readied the entire district to utilize google classroom the things that i can do with google now that i couldn't do a year ago are amazing it's been it's been fantastic and what i'm really excited about is i showed the principal we were did this the other day they they put up with
067me i don't know why but they do we can do tabs now so we can save things at the top of our um our bar and it doesn't go away when you're in the middle of teaching something and you've got four or five tabs open and you accidentally click x it doesn't go away it stays pinned to the top so that was a big thing that we we've learned minor but a huge difference with the kids when you've got them in there we also utilized educational collaborators and we found out about them when we did a one-to-one audit a couple years ago they provided additional support to us they provided coaching and research so a lot of what concerned me was i'd never done this before and i needed to figure out how to support
068everyone and so i would it takes a long time sometimes to find research especially with something so obscure as as what we were doing last year and so when i there would be times where i would try to find some things on my own but i was able always to reach out to them and say hey i need to know how we need how to do this piece for the entire district can you find some information for me and they would and i would have it and then we could implement it right away it was fabulous um and then they also supported the curriculum department just in helping the teachers deliver this and the technology department because that completely changed they went from supporting this much technology to supporting this much and like through the
069next room and and with the same amount of staff okay we also um created a lead teacher group um to support staff and they um once a month all school year during the asynchronous days they met they got pd and they were able to utilize the pd as in a way that supported what their staff needed at that time and we have folks called data instructional facilitators and they were each assigned to particular grade levels to support instruction and virtual teaching and they met weekly with the teachers once the school year started to make sure that they had what they needed to find out what questions they had and then we would try to find those answers and then get those out to everybody and we used this more to do that at the high
070school we used ann alegretti matt harmless and shannon bicknell they created it was i'm that bless you um they created um a resource page those of you that had kids at the high school there was a portal that you could go into and the kids could go into to access whatever they needed and they created lots and lots of videos and tutorials for us to use as a district because they were experts in those things we also had to figure out schedules we didn't know what that looked like and we had to figure out schedules that honored the amount of time that kids are supposed to spend with reading and with writing and with math and then as the kids get older with those other subjects and that was probably the hardest thing for me
071to they'll tell you to let go of was that we couldn't we know what is recommended for the amount of time that kids need to learn particular subjects and we had to figure out how to work around the fact that we weren't going to have that much time and what that looked like um okay i know this is long thank you guys for being so patient um we also utilized the asynchronous days to provide additional professional development and planning opportunities for staff so they could adjust curriculum because if you remember we were in we were out we were in and when we were out and when we did that how we taught changed and so we needed to give the teachers time to figure out how to adjust so they could make sure that they
072were giving the kids the very best that they could we provided monthly plc support in coordination with the educational collaborative collaboration collaborators um targeting needs that the staff indicated and what was so interesting about this as we planned what we were going to provide to the staff like in oh i think it was june may and june and then um we had a 12 like a nine month plan for everything and what was going to happen each month and the staff took so much time over the summer to learn these things that a lot of the stuff they already knew how to do before we got there but then they were able to use those for staff that maybe weren't as comfortable yet because we had staff on all different stages of comfort comfort with
073technology we also looked at our local assessment data and again that was during plc times or grade level meetings and when we could see that we were struggling with academic apps we researched the best practices and what was the best way to give the kids what they needed at that time and then we continued to offer professional development and then we created the post pandemic instructional plan so the next thing we do after we create after we look at data and we make all these curricular adjustments then we have to say okay how'd we do what we look at the student performance we look at recommendations from the teachers from families the surveys that you guys fill out those five essential surveys we really look at that data and make adjustments based on what you
074say in those so it's really important to us when you fill those out and then we look at how evaluations of the teachers and what we're seeing and then we'll we put this together and make recommendations and then again we adjust for the next school year so considering that interruption to the 1920 spring semester and additional adjustments necessary to deliver curriculum and instruction we created a post-pandemic instructional plan and then that's was implemented in april i can't remember the date in april but we rolled that out to the staff this past april and that's what we're going to be working with this next school year so that's the next but let's stop here okay it is a perfect opportunity to take a stop you can ask questions just because you've done a whole document we
075can say are there any questions and then we can address the questions perfect natural transition so why don't you go and say are there any questions any questions yes sir um i think it's a question for you or it might be for mr henderson but what is the dropout rate in all of illinois that is i can find that for you i don't know it off the top of my head but i can look um and and get that information to you um i can probably do that tomorrow okay and i'm gonna need you to let me know if i forget to get it to you and don't be afraid to do that okay they got it okay okay any other questions yeah i've created this segment right for you go ahead we'll have our
076time no no no i've created it for you right here that's okay you know i would like to try to address one of your questions because i had the question brought to me months ago regarding the whole critical race theory thing and my son's a high school teacher teaches english american literature uh with the ap program advanced placement and i said to my son i said tell me about critical race theory and the first thing he said to me was dead that doesn't exist at the high school level that's a university thing but what we do have and i believe mrs button spoke to this is the cultural relevant standards or response culturally relevant teaching and learning standards so i asked people about different than culturally relevant teaching right so i asked him i said
077can you tell me about that because i i understand that the state has these guidelines etc his response was different than what dr ukobi provided to you but i think it's even more relevant what he shared with me is as he looks at what he what he teaches he tries to make it culturally relevant to his classroom so for example one of his readings that the that the ap class teaches is the great gatsby and in that reading this is his explanation to me there's a part in there where individuals are driving down the road and they see a white man driving uh black black men in the back of the car now the time period is in the 1930s or 1920s so he talks to the class about why is this unusual why is
078this different thinking about the time that this occurred so that's how he incorporates the the cultural relevance into his studies and into the curriculum so that the children do some critical thinking and think about what's the difference well gosh that's really would have been against the cultural standards of that time typically it was a black man that would be chauffeuring people not a white man he also gave me the example of they they also read the uh okay now i'm missing you might have to help me it's either we the people to form a morph about all men are created equal is that the constitutional declaration i'm sorry i think it's constitution right preamble the preamble so they read the preamble so he when he gets to that part about all men created equal when
079i know i just blew it my kid's going to be i agree with me but it was written in 1776 okay in the 1700s so were all men created equal was it men was it women i mean that you know what does men refer to well it referred to white men didn't refer to anybody else women didn't have a right to vote they didn't have a say he talked about you know the slaves the indentured servants all of those things so that's how he incorporates that into the curriculum and i i hope that gives you a different perspective of it but that was it helped me so anyway i'll stop with that okay are we ready to go on to the next section oh there's more there is more i know she said i was
080gonna talk a lot today i do appreciate your patience i know that this is not everyone's love um okay so then we created the post-pandemic instructional plan lovingly known as the pip plan um so on in april what we did we worked a lot with the regional office of education and they were able to provide some support to us because there's not um in in our office okay a couple of us would like to take a bathroom break okay i hope it's not my presentation okay also have yeah she's lost out in the hallway skip can you help her please yeah there you go dr would you be okay with the five minutes i have no problems the board would like to take a five minute break but let's try to keep it to five
081okay so everybody go fast as soon as seven of you are back here we'll we'll reconvene four point something it's the cute cheese chicago public school was higher cps is higher you may i don't know if i'll answer pastor what do you think it matters hi i was just checking to see how much time i got left on here are you saying i'm a bit windy two more minutes yeah that's okay that was making me nervous there you go okay i appreciate that i love my job oh no this is what helped i have been called half truth liar or whatever i don't know how many times i can slice it jason jordan thank you oh it was fun we had a good time i misspelled sandy wallace's name this morning in the murder story
082on our site oh no i'm gonna make it copy you know i think i really need to go to the bathroom but i'm gonna have to wait in the bathroom i know i probably could i just probably shared that with the entire world how are you doing good how are the kids you know okay and this is what you do for those of you that are going through the yawn fest we are in a teaching and learning yeah organization this is what we're supposed to be talking about as opposed to maybe other distracting topics that's what i would do thank you [Applause] pepsi my friends okay calling darlene halloran i wanted to sit right here oh if i would have known you were there oh yeah we're we're back in session you'd like to if
083you'd like to stay out there be my guest i do take that personally though but okay don't take my mask on my neck as a pro or negative mask thing the problem is i have my wife goes i don't know if we've been exposed or not okay great now you say that what do you what are you doing i told you don't worry i'm not gonna be here for if we are so but um what did you just say he thinks he's been exposed you yeah the rest of the media i'm in back that's the point i'm fully vaccinated oh and tag corona so give me some more somebody said so i just wanted to say it doesn't mean anything for as far as the symbol all right we're back in session please give us
084more um i'm gonna try not to take personally that i cleared the room so it's like a comic you know when people are leaving in the middle so thank you all for staying i mean i understand why other people you know they needed to go to do family things okay so there's three parts to this post pandemic instructional plan the first part was that we spent a lot of times creating resources for everybody to use and then we met with administrators and we went through the post pandemic plan with them and then they delivered it to their their staff so um i have a couple things here i'm i'm going to show um present this and then we'll get we'll see i'll probably mess up the so this was the the slideshow that we've made
085um and i think that this probably is the best way to kind of quickly go through and show you because this is what we delivered to the staff um actually so at the beginning um this is when so these these folks in april were so tired and so tired of changes and and and um new ways to deliver things and um we we were giving them okay we need to start we know you're tired we know that this is exhausting but we've got to start talking about next year and this was in april and so we wanted them to know that we know what they've done and so we started out with the slide um and the principals were able to take this slideshow and make it their own so some of them moved this
086slide they they focused on other things but this is the message that we wanted to um to share with the staff to let them know that they were appreciated okay so what we were trying to do what we want to do this upcoming school year this is what we're hoping that you'll see um we're planning for you to see and apparently it's disappearing so um maybe that's i'm just not gonna take that personally either um okay we will provide just in time and just right instruction for all students that meets their academic and social emotional needs the first instinct that we all had was okay our year was interrupted so with our fourth graders we're gonna start introducing that really important third grade curriculum that we're not sure that they all had and that was
087our first instinct so we researched a lot to find out okay is that what we should do and we found out that's not what we should do so what they're talking about here is that we really refine for a fourth grader or for a freshman we really refine what a fourth grader is supposed to know and when we get standards from the state what what we teach i think there's typically about 65 english standards there's usually about 40 math standards and then there's social studies standards and science standards and health standards and pe standards so what we had to figure out was what of the which of those standards were really the most important ones which ones were the priority the state thought they did us this wonderful favor by all by prioritizing the standards
088for this for us they did that early we got those i believe in august or early september and we took a little bit of time as um our office the curriculum office did and we made them we put them in a way that was a little more palatable than the way the state brought them out um just literally in formatting and then we made that available we made that available to the staff and so it what they told us was that they were saying okay we tell you we want you to focus here in a normal year so now we want you to focus on this many but really this is normal and this is what they said for last year there was still not a lot of reduction to it so then we worked
089with the regional office of education and experts in those fields and we said we need to really refine these standards and where we're going to focus next year and so we did that work and so what we you should expect to see in the classrooms is that the kids aren't going to go through so maybe if um in their reading classroom there's 10 there's 10 units in the benchmark book we might go through six of them next year and we picked the six most important things because what we know is as we come out of this it's probably going to take us three years to catch the kids back up to where they would normally be but our plan is that we get them farther ahead each time so as we kind of reduce that
090curriculum we still have the same amount of time in a normal school year to teach so what do we do with that extra time we know that the kids are going to need um sel support just watching the kids in summer school they were so tired going from eight you know um social emotional learning um in summer school the kids were really tired going from eight to one and we're going back in a normal day so we need to be aware of that and and really make sure that and the teachers too it's it's just different it's going to take all of us an adjustment it's like that first time you went out when it was okay to go out again it just felt different and you had my computer just disappeared too okay you
091want a hard copy okay hang on okay so anyway so what our plan is is that as we're doing um as we're doing this focused instruction we're also going to be figuring out what the kids missed from the school year before or from the grade level before and then we're going to say if we're teaching fourth grade fractions then what did they need as a third grader to be able to access fourth grade fractions or as a second grader we'll give the kids an assessment that'll kind of help us determine that and then we'll embed that into that lesson and this is really tricky we've not this is something kind of a um a newer way to try to to remediate this and so the staff need a lot of um they're they're gonna need
092some time to figure this out and and we need to provide them the support that they need and then we also built in time so at the beginning of the school year we could teach routines and procedures again what does it look like when you're in the hallway what does it look like when you're in the classroom where do i get a pencil if i don't have one who do i go to if i need support with this and how do we have conversations we have a lot of kids that didn't see other kids for a whole year so how do you have a conversation with another student how do you have a conversation with the teacher how does a teacher have a conversation with a student and so we're going to spend some time
093teaching those things and getting the kids excited to be back at school and the neatest thing was at summer school too was seeing how excited the kids were to be there okay so why do we think that this was the best way to kind of handle handle it is because um we want to make sure we don't because we don't have the data that we normally have we're not a hundred percent sure of who mastered what to the extent that we normally would be so we we don't want to go back and assume that every kid needs to go back and redo the grade level from last year that's not what's best for the kids we want to give them the grade level that they're supposed to be in and the support that they need
094to access that grade level content okay so this is one of my favorite charts and i don't i think maybe i'm the only one that likes this but basically what's that what this shows you is normally in a school year with the red x if this were a third grade classroom this is what people we were all kind of thinking you know back in november december that this is what we were going to have to do this school year in a third grade classroom i'm going to start teaching this is really important second grade material so i'm just gonna start my year teaching second grade skills and then about november i'll start hitting third grade skills and no that's not the best way to do it we're gonna start teaching third grade skills with third
095graders but then anybody that can't access that because they don't quite have it we're gonna give them small group time or an intervention or um uh you know a mini lesson on the skill that they need to get to that third grade scale so that's what that looks like so as we're teaching third grade we're supporting with second grade skills okay and then we're not going to clump all of the information together we're going to kind of um sprinkle in the interventions that the kids need every time that we teach something new we're gonna provide them the support that they need instead of clumping it all together at the beginning so it's just another visual representation of saying the same thing okay and then we knew that this was going to take a lot of
096time so we asked the schools to create timelines to get this work done and then what we wanted at the end was something that i lovingly um i love our scope and sequences this is what the board approves this is the curriculum when you want to know what we're teaching this is what we provide to families this is what the teachers start with it basically says scope means what we're teaching the breadth of what we're teaching and this and the order that we're teaching it in um then we have pacing guides how long should we how much time should we take with each subject understanding that maybe with our learners in our classrooms we may have to adjust that pace we should adjust that pace for the kids that are in our in our room
097and then curriculum maps that are responsive to student learning needs so if a student doesn't know this or a student is struggling with this what do we do and okay what if i have a kid that comes in and they know all of this what do i do i need to give them more so where does more come from that's what a curriculum map is and we wanted we have those those pieces but we needed to refine them all and we wanted to make sure that the classes embedded that's what we meant by reducing the priority you know really getting down to a set of priority standards was that the teachers had time to really do some re-teaching and support for students as they need it and then the pre-assessments that they're giving so before
098they start teaching something they're not looking at what they're going to teach they're looking at what should the kids have gotten before we start teaching this so we can intervene on that okay so this is the i won't show you guys this you don't but basically we created um just a walk-through form that the teachers could use to kind of process through this process and the thinking and and that's available too if anybody wants to see it i could i'd love to sit down and show it to you it's super fun for me um and then there were some things that we were able to get from resources that the state provided um and there were videos and documents that kind of explained this process and so the buildings kind of determined if they were
099going to watch it if they were going to let the teachers kind of watch it on their own time or if maybe their staff was already beyond it and they didn't need it because we do try to differentiate as much as possible for our staff as well okay and then this is we gave them who can help um and then these are the resources that they were given and so basically this is our plan this is what we're doing we built we helped staff we built their background on this process we asked each building to create a timeline of when each part of this would be done that made sense for their building in the time that their teachers had to to process through it we created tea charts so second grade teachers i mean
100i keep using elementary examples and um the eighth grade teachers created teach arts for math and they said this is on the left side of the t-chart so literally it's a t draw down drawn down the middle of the page and on the left side it says these are the things that we got to and we're pretty confident that the kids know this this is the stuff that we normally get to and we're not real sure that they know it or maybe we didn't get to cover it and then that was provided to the freshman teachers and so we did that throughout the district then they had to that then as those were passed on the teachers reviewed those in the the upcoming course and so um they reviewed those and then they said okay
101if the kids have this then we know that this is probably something we can move forward with if we know they don't have it this is going to be something we want to assess for and kind of figure out where the kids are so we know what part of it to do and then we reviewed the priority standards that was given that were given to us by the roe which were further prioritized from the state and we looked at our scope and sequences that we already have and said okay what needs to go what do we really need to focus on for this next school year and then we created an initial draft and then determine the assessments and then we're going to keep working on this throughout this next school year so this will
102be our plan likely for the next three years and we'll keep expanding that scope and sequence as the kids get more comfortable and and we return and maybe we'll get it done in two years and maybe not three okay so and then this just provided the time um and this was really important that we wanted um everybody to understand is that this is going to take time we're not going to have this this beautiful everything exactly ready to go but these are the important things that you need to have ready to go before the next school year that these things are going to change and then they the the staff needed to work at a pace that would help the students but in a style that recognized them so we weren't burning them out in
103the process and this is what they've been working on a lot during open gyms okay okay i'm gonna hit escape so there's the other two documents that go with that hang on sorry guys ugh okay i mean present not share okay so i'm just gonna get out of there so basically then i can need to switch to my other slideshow here okay so while we were doing all of that we also made some adjustments and those of you that have elementary teachers they are so excited about letters and this addressed the phonics issue that we talked about earlier so they even did this on top of everything the letters training that the teachers are doing it typically takes two years to get all the way through it and we have over a hundred teachers that
104are participating in it and most of them have gotten it done in three months because they are so passionate about what they're learning and this is the part that will really address the phonics um issues that we're or the phonics concerns that they have we're also piloting a new mass series again teachers seem to be very excited about it it was um it's not going in all of the classrooms yet next year um but it we're gonna pilot it and we have a large group piloting it and we'll see how that works and if we find it successful then we'll be back to ask for adoption these were both board approved earlier this year then we're getting groups of teachers together to talk k-12 about math and k-12 about ela my hope is that eventually
105we get science and social studies groups as well really all the curricular areas and then we started spending some time with the principals each month typically we have district instructional leadership teams and that really focuses on our school improvement goals mrs truex leads those and we and we realized um at that time that we also needed to spend some time with the principals too on instruction because it was going to look so different than what we normally did and so we added an additional meaning with them and we really processed through a lot of this work so that's in addition to what else we were doing so that was how we took the data what we did when we recognized that the curriculum needed to change what those changes were and then how we implemented
106it so i am done um do you guys have any questions and thank you for staying awake and staying it really means a lot to me i didn't need that you did a great job taking a massive amount of information and making it digestible thank you well i appreciate that engaging i work with a lot of really fabulous people and it makes my job really easy so i appreciate all of them i just have one comment mrs bunton we are a teaching and learning organization and yet we spend very little time talking about the day-to-day work that our teachers do and our administrators about teaching and learning and we have to compact it even though this is you just saw spring to two years i mean a year and a half and so i just
107want to tell you i know how hard it is and i saw it like you're being nervous you did a great job wow i appreciate that thank you but it's it's not just me it's a large group of people so okay now for the requirements we have to talk about compacting all that information and making it fit with the p20 their words not mine um into some sort as a proposal leave it broad enough that we could have comment about it tweak it for the next 30 days and so we will begin with the team with the return to learn three-year essay proposal team okay we're gonna pick up the pace okay the um return to learn through your essay proposal is that a proposal we do not have a plan yet but these are
108just things that we came up with and i'm going to let dr jacoby and mr heart start with um with our powerpoint well as you know very quickly our mission in district 118 is that all students all students reach their full potential we keep that in mind when we make decisions we look at the district vision and we run by three goals in the district first for district improvement um we always look at continuous improvement we look at a lot of data we say where are we doing well and where do we really need to work harder at we absolutely know attendance is an issue chronic truism is an issue people please send your kids to school when they can come to school that is something we struggle with we're constantly looking for how do
109we increase our attendance rates at our schools we know that's a district goal we also talk about how do our management and our principles really focus on a student-centered approach student-centered what do our kids need all our kids obviously our priorities we want to maximize learning and make sure that we look at areas that support them physically social emotionally educationally the whole child you've heard dr gettys say it over and over again whole child four big areas when we looked at esser funding all the things mary ellen talked about in the curriculum and it boiled down to health college and career readiness equity and then other big district big ideas and these are not just discussions among our team they're discussions you guys have had at a board level there are discussions that parents have
110given us through the five essential survey and said you really need to think about this you should be talking about this so to start out we're gonna have um oh the resources we use just so you know p20 is a big huge document we talked about in some previous meetings the state gave us that guidance and said when you're developing your plan don't read it front to back don't read it from the back because it's 200 and some whatever pages but you better start looking at these things the good news is they were things we were already looking at and considering so some of them tied beautifully others were eye openers but these are primarily the chapters so when we go through this presentation uh quickly you'll see that we did a cross reference and
111a lot of that is for kelly over here who as she word smith's the grant and for us as we develop what are going to be our monitoring tools how will we know we're meeting our goals when we actually start all this work um that's why we have a cross-reference these are all the pieces as i said the data that we used when we looked at this and now the funding okay so yeah with the money they're here to present um with the funding all of the things in this proposal they're not just esser they also you can see include title one two three four illinois power preschool for all preschool frog expansion district funds um the i put on there obviously sr2 14 million that grant has been submitted but there are always amendments
112and that those funds are available through september 30th the american rescue plan local educational agencies that's sr3 we thought we were getting 31 million we got 32.2 million dollars um the funds are available through september 30th 2024. we received an additional 736 000 that's where the it went from 31 to 32. um it was called sr-3 state set-aside so the state i was worried would make it a separate grant they didn't they put it into sr3 but it has requirements 526 000 has to be spent on learning loss and then a hundred and five thousand dollars for summer enrichment and a hundred and five thousand dollars for after spro after school programs that's just in that seven hundred thousand in the thirty million we still are required to do 20 20 on learning loss so
113you'll see that as we go through okay oh went the wrong way molly okay so um obviously i have the health section um i always get drug into that piece but um health is um both mental and physical health of our students and staff um and i think that the the part that i i was excited about you know as we look through the p20 document as a resource and all the other things these are a lot of the things we've already been championing that we've already kind of had on the horizon so um you know we want to look at removing those barriers of our students not being able to be in school whether they're physical or mental health barriers removing or financial and you know with the idea of increasing student attendance getting
114them compliant quickly and keeping them there in the building and so the these are kind of the things um i don't want to read them to you so um the this first one is more um the physical health piece um nurses dental things telehealth options um and um the big one the on-site district health clinic i think that's the big one and then we say bali we set this up as you can see with measures oh yes okay so the measures um yeah so the measures are the things that we are we would be proposing these are the big ideas that we would do as action and then how would we measure whether these things are um successful or not because that was a big thing for me on the metrics because we have grant
115reports that are due and when the grant reports are due we have to say okay we spent this much money what results did we get from it so the monitoring piece is huge for me and i push that a lot so that's why the metrics piece is there this slide focuses more on student mental health and social emotional learning these are things that like i said we're already driving forward with and we already recognize um hoping that we can um boost them and um focus on giving the staff the resources they need to and the knowledge that they need to support students students it can't always be mental health professionals first of all there's a complete lack of them second of all our student our students are with teachers most of the time and so
116they need the resources in their back pocket to be able to support those kids um and then identifying the students that need the support and not and and so that it's kind of a twofold approach and the last one is recognizing that compassion fatigue is a real thing and that our staff also need support and um hoping that helping support our staff with an employee assistance program the wellness things for them leads to better attendance for them which also leads to better um outcomes academically for students as well any questions on the health portion we'll get them at the end okay then i don't know who's next maryland yeah yes yeah yes and it's long but i'm gonna go fast okay so what i'm gonna ask that you do this is a strategy that we
117use in the classroom it is an avid strategy i'm gonna ask that you go ahead and just look at the slide i'm going to give you some time and then if you have a question to please ask it and i might highlight one or two things so go ahead you can highlight while we're okay while i'm reading okay so again we talked about this earlier um these the things that this first few slides is about the things that we're working with the teachers to help them um be the best that they can be in the classroom so we're focusing on letters as reading math and then of course we have the post pandemic instructional plan and then you see our metrics over there of how we're measuring those okay um we also have the focused
118open gyms a lot of this we talked about standards based grading and we're really working on refining that to make to continue to make that a good resource for families and for staff and then we're looking at the assessments that we give the kids and which ones are the best and that's what an audit is and what gives us the best information and we want to use as few of them as possible to give us the most information additional professional development measures internal university meaning ways that we can give the teachers internal credit for um to move to we we set parameters for the staff to be able to get um as folks were talking about they work hard learning new things and so we can give them credit for doing those things and that
119would be something we provide coaching and mentoring to our staff um and and having those those folks available not only out of our office but also in the buildings utilizing stem coaches math and science expert to kind of help teachers and then consultants when we don't have staff to fill roles again avid is huge always ask questions about avid um and smackins we talked about that a little bit earlier now these are instruction ideas that we have that we would like to investigate um having students that from dak come down and help our help in classrooms at dhs and in other buildings and then have our dhs students take a class where they could get credit for helping students in the younger grades that would be fabulous booster camps we started this two years ago
120with a kindergarten boot camp where the kids that were going into kindergarten so rising kindergartners they would be able to kind of get ready a week before school started and now we're looking at implementing those we would really like to implement those in the transitional grades um eventually we've got some work to do to develop a virtual academy we did recognize that there were some kids that did a lot better virtually than in person but the state requirements for setting that up is pretty um intense and so it's going to take us a little bit of time to get like a true academy ready to do that and then growing your own making sure that um our staff that if we have students and staff that are interested in teaching that we provide the support
121to them and then they want to come back and teach with us we also have other instructional men measures and we've got some folks here that that represent some of these things too so what what is there out in the community um that can help support our students and how can we help support them as they support our students and then how can we provide opportunities for learning beyond the school day for our students and that's what all of this is and really making sure since we do have avid in all of our buildings that we are doing it um there's so much research to show that when avid is done with fidelity throughout the building that it really does improve the situation for all students and then for students that need alternative programming being
122able to reorganize and really expand that process and then career planning we sep this whole page is is really about once kids get to um start approaching high school is giving them the resources that they need to be successful beyond high school and giving them experiences with jobs and careers and um college exposure and maybe an alternate way of getting through high school that makes sense for them and gets them on the path that they want to go to lots of internships with local companies and then making sure that the materials that we have in our classrooms are the very best for our students and that that we update them as frequently enough that we can keep up with the demands that there's so many this 21st century skills change so frequently that we want
123to make sure that our core materials really reflect that and then what are we what are we going to do you know education and academics requires the whole family and so what can we do to support families so they can support their students and a lot of this is outreach um and making sure that we have supports available within the classroom i don't know if those of you that are there but filling out that fafsa form is absolutely ridiculous i don't know how many of you experienced that so we want to make sure that we have time in like built in where families can come either out in the community we have days or evenings where folks can work together to fill out those fafsa forms because that can be a way that folks can
124access college when maybe they wouldn't normally be able to and then making sure that our resources that our families use a lot that are out in the community that that our students and families can can get to them at school and then any community organizations that we're going to hear from in a little bit as they provide opportunities for students to to access um training beyond high school that we're able to kind of help support those and then we have fabulous avid tutors at the middle school in high school and it would be great they are so good at what they do and it would be great to be able to offer their offer them an opportunity to provide time even beyond the school day where they could work with students all students in the
125same way they work with the avid students okay i'm done all right so um i was tasked equity to ensure equity brandi kuczewski is partnering with me she's in the back she'll be presenting here soon i do want to start with the initiatives on addressing all initiatives should address student needs equitably so these slides that are coming up are not things that we are necessarily already doing there are things that we need to investigate to ensure that we are being equitable and i thought maybe i would share with equity being um the meaning of personal or social circumstances such as gender ethnic origin or family background those are not obstacles to achieving educational potential so that's the lens that we're to use with equity so things like organize the student attendance areas the pre-k center
126we've talked about we've got virtual and in-person registration the community support van available more available funds for homeless and expand like the physical education opportunities when we've talked about building on multi-purpose areas or gyms these are district measures and then um like a counselor audit grading practices looking at our data like our suspension data and making sure that we decrease that data or you know we decrease those suspension days improve the heating ventilation air conditioning all of these things are to ensure that all buildings are equitable for all kids then with the community family i divided by district and community family so re-engagement of students um that just really didn't participate so we had seven home interventionists that have been working out this working this summer and they've reached out to 548 students for compliance
127like birth certificate and medical um and things like that they're continuing to reach out to those families um they're also setting up assessments if they hadn't been school and then they're coming to the jackson million to be assessed we've got two pre-k liaisons um kaelin's been doing uh kaelyn dobbles has been doing a pre-k registration at the jackson building signing times and people can come in and register um so she's done two of those already and registered 30 students and then we have another one martin mitchell who has been setting up pre-k screening screenings so um again we want to with the pre-k program we want to expand that would be excited to do that we have provided additional and diverse locations for screenings and we're also going to continue to have virtual screenings that
128has really been worked well with us and definitely with the birth um three program um utilize our home interventionists in the summer which we're doing we'll look at a 24 7 computer adaptive tutoring program that's something that's highly suggested i'm meeting with myself and mary ellen are going to meet this week with um a company that we might be interested in that and then again we had three buildings we had uh meade park edison and southview did a culturally responsive teaching book study with the roe we'd like to expand that we have avid path training and then just equity training because not everyone totally understands it so that would be something that we could do over the next three years so other district initiatives these are big things that skip and mr hart and dr
129kobe are going to talk about so thank you for your time and i'll let you guys finish okay one quick question you mentioned about the culture that that well i had down like training for our teachers however if we can get a family you know engagement program or something going that could happen definitely we just um you know need resources to get those things organized and we need a family community specialist okay timing because i'll be giving this to mr truax really with the other district and if our initiatives my slide is really just like a brain dump or looking back on things that we've brought up before we said we were going to explore where'd we leave off if um you know doing balanced calendar or whatever so just making sure that you know
130they're just not gone so we tried to you know bring them back to the forefront and i think mr truax is going to walk us home with his am i right no i don't know i think so science last year let's go back he needs to go back i thought we were going to get a presentation with laura lee that's coming up after this we're still on uh we're on number two i i'm going to um so the next one is employee child care center chapter 12 that would be included into the pre-k center you see it up there next would be organized student attendance center which would be grade level centers throughout the district um can you check mr carey's device up there for me please make sure it's on right behind you because
131i can't hear you at oh here it is no it's not on your neck looks like it's dead yeah i think it probably it's flashing yeah develop and grow your own program that's you well just we can wrap this up these are the district big ideas dr gettys has talked about we need to grow our own program what we mean by that is there's a teacher shortage folks if we don't start developing teacher programs that involve people in the community and or our own employees who want to go on and get teaching degrees come back and fill as well as looking at our students and what kind of things we offer to get them into education and educational pieces we're going to struggle science labs ooh lord we've been talking about that for years our
132science labs for our high school northridge south they need to be updated tremendously modernizing that has to do with looking at each building and saying how do we bring our buildings up to innovative learning spaces whether it's the media center at the high school personally that carpeting just puts me over the edge we won't even get into it but it's not just the high school it's looking at all of our buildings looking at how do we modernize and innovate learning spaces to reflect the kind of learning environment we want to have so those are district big ideas that have already been brought up that have already been on the list that we put in here as potential for proposals okay i'll go ahead and do the next steps so our next steps i'll go ahead
133and do it our next step i actually have your listener i got this one that's good oh okay so so the next steps what we need to do for 30 days we're going to put this up and ask for a parent comment and reflect parents students staff comment reflections ideas etc on this document um we'll have this up if you give me not tonight tomorrow that we we will put this up we will reconvene all of our transition teams to review this information with them and based on that we will develop the priorities we'll we'll pull up the themes that emerge from them bring it back to the board of education with a timeline and reconvene for for you guys for approval to be able to send it to the state those are the next
134steps and that the this would have to be done before the end of september just so everybody knows yep any questions i know you must say when do we sleep he's doing all this stuff okay thank you kelly and team i think i'm next right yep you are next okay yes onward okay um i'm just reading the educational um support office is recommending that we partner with laura lee fellowship house to provide enough an opportunity for an after school or they've been doing a summer thing um mr david groves is doing that and i'm going to let them come up and kind of share and i want to thank them they came here at 6 30 um and they waited for mrs robinson let them know when they could come back over um for the
135kids and one of the kids one of my garfield kids so i'm thrilled to see tony here um but i i'm recommending that we partner with them to and you can see the attachment with their service agreement to provide an opportunity for 30 students and i'm going to let them explain if you want to come on up what they've been doing and introduce yourselves yes and this is in the chapter 10 of p20 and is part of the three-year proposal come on thank you mr grove thank you all right good evening everyone um first and foremost thank you to the board and dr gettys for allowing this to be possible i moved back to danville last year in february and did i think this would happen no but getting the call and making this happen
136um dr gaddis reached out to trisha teague and lisa brooks who was on our board and we got this started in november and since november we've been able to have over 40 students in our after school program and 30 students in our summer program um and i know you all think we've been waiting they've actually been getting tired of me because we have a fashion show tomorrow so we've been in fashion show practice since six o'clock so we just walked over and got that going um but i do want to present on the ubuntu mentoring program my name is david groves jr for clarification um i'm the executive director of the lordly fellowship house and i have been the director for about almost two months now um it brings me great excitement to come here
137and present this because the main thing that i want the community to see is the lordly was a safe haven for myself for my mother and now it's going to be a safe haven for future generations what we're doing now is the ubuntu mentoring program which stands for i am because we are teaching students how to recognize different triggers when it comes to mental health how to actually deal with in the classroom college readiness um career prep um being um prepared for careers but most of all actually learning themselves we value um african coach we value actually making sure that students understand what it means to be an african-american in today's society but not just that but to recognize different cultures and actually have access to these cultures to understand how we can better work
138with groups the best part about this program i'm at work all day i'm there from a to take a little quick break and then come back for after school program the best part about it is seeing these students learn something new every day there's never a dry day whether it's a joke about you know something that i've done yesterday or whether it's just enlightenment about their today they were doing vision boards which has allowed me to see that they have an interest to see different career goals that is something that we're doing here at the laura lee the importance of this program i'm actually going to allow my students to talk about it but i do want you all to know that we have so many plans and although we said 30 students since our
139college trip which we were able to take 40 students to evansville indiana nashville tennessee atlanta georgia and back cove it's safe no scares or anything um for a week which was a an adventure let's say that but this adventure turned into students being excited for what's to come like i said they don't have to be here all day i have four students here we have two from our after school program we have one from our summer program then we have a student who's with us all day not for sure if she just loves being around us but she feeds into the program and she comes in our summer program helps us out and then comes back in the evening and helps us out as well too we've had a month long of events and like
140i said the last event for the month is the fashion show um you see the mask that we're wearing right now i made sure that they wore these today we had a blackmail summit this past saturday which we had over 50 young men come out and actually learn what it means to wear a crown the theme was you can't wear a crown with your head down we see so many students who feel defeated in the classroom because they may not understand something they don't know how to specifically voice their opinion they feel sometimes they may be too aggressive i know these things because i was that way i'm a product of denver high school i'm a product of district 118 i love my upbringing but that's enough for me i want my students to furthermore
141to tell you so i'm going to bring up tony phipps first um i'm in the summer program my name is tony phipps obviously um so then i was in the ubuntu um but i stopped going it's not for their reasons but um in the summer program we learn a lot about our black black history and we we're helped with our mental health and everything we have mental health checks we're learning about entrepreneurship and money how to manage money we're learning about we've learned about the origins of juneteenth and um how everything started and where it came from and how it became a national holiday and we've learned about um we've learned we learned a lot we we're working on our future together i have made a lot of new friends and i can basically call
142on my family i feel comfortable there [Music] it's not like we're not just we can have fun i can say that i would really like the summer program it's it gave me a lot of opportunities during our um trip to the colleges i think i found a potential college that i want to go to it's just they gave us a lot of opportunities and i'm here i've never been here before so that's that's a new step for me i'm going to 10th grade [Applause] hi everybody um my name is akaya davis i'm an incoming junior uh junior at danville high school i'm the student he talked by the ghost morning and um afternoon but i've been in this program since it started basically like being in the program has really brought okay if you know
143me you know like my family we're just all loud we're not really loud but i'm not i'm not loud but i'm loud enough to know all right now i'm wide enough to know that um like to voice my opinion without feeling like i'm doing too much with this so being in the afternoon program for the summer it has taught me like a lot of black culture that i didn't know before it has taught me how to allow myself to explain myself without feeling like i'm overdoing it or i'm just being dramatic you know but um with the mentors we have in the afternoon program it has it brings you to like you can trust you can trust them with any everything just about and they'll make you see the good and the bad not gonna
144agree with you just because well you're in the group like they're gonna let you know if you're in the wrong refund or right being in a summer program it's like i'm like the oldest there so when i go there i was like all these little kids are like my siblings or something whatever but it's it's cool being in there because you do learn more other than black history like see we separated girls and boys so if you're a girl you're with the girl mentor and if you're a boy with the boy being with the girl you learn more about just you can learn more because she can say more without having the guys feel uncomfortable so being with her is like wow i mean i can't i can do more than i can do more
145than just be here graduate you know it's more to it going on the trip it opened my eyes even though i um even though going like going to all black college is something i want to do now so when i graduate in like two years i will be attending some black college i know for sure but um it's just it just no no more like howard university but we'll go there later but um we it just it just being being in the group is really just makes you feel at home like you can always depend on somebody in the group to either help you out call for a ride any any of the above so if you guys have kids i recommend you um sign them up asap oh yeah i was too [Applause] i
146might have to bend down there you go all right my name is nathaniel hodgson's and i just graduated high school and i was one of the i was the first i believe i was the first boy of this group back in like november and i'll say like you know we learned a lot about our history and african history and this and that but the biggest thing that i took from it is learning how to believe in yourself and have confidence in yourself and we really like we really got that through trust because we we trust each other up in here it's like a family like when you walk up in there you know ah this is my cousin this and that you just you know it's really a family and um you know david and
147the mentor they push us to do things that we not normally do like me i don't do i was like shy kid growing up so i never really did like speaking like this so by them pushing me and pushing me out my um you know push me to the limit and things like that now i can sit here and speaking like that and um really just like they said it's really like a family when you go there and it's really a place that you can go and you can vent without being judged because you know being outside of here you can you know it's hard to vent because people judge you and this and that so going up in there is really like man you can just be free and you learn a lot about
148the african culture and also like you gain relationship that you have for life that you have for college because man they it's some people up in there that's like three years younger than me but we like close like we close friends and we talk on a daily and this and that so it's really just about the um unity that we have in the group that really like you know that really makes me like love the group and stuff like that because even like i've been going to school my whole life but i've never seen like real unity like we have there and real love and real passion and real like togetherness and everybody everybody up in there then got confidence now like everybody it'd be man you would be surprised because it was people that
149was real shy like me and now like they dancing and this and that and talking and everybody funny up in there too that's another thing everybody up in there funny but yeah um like i said i believe this group has really taught us to you know believe in ourself and have confidence and another thing it taught us males to it's okay to let your guard down it's okay to talk about your problems because you know growing up that was that you know you gotta stick it up you know you're not supposed to talk about your problem make you look weak but up and near reading you're not you're not weak because you talk about your problems you know everybody have problems and that's another thing that i really took from there and learned from their
150end my boy martinez wrote is he gonna talk more about that so you're gonna put me last i'm martez rose i'm an incoming seer for danville high school i'm gonna touch on like a lot of what they said this group is amazing um i wasn't the kid that i always talked like nathaniel said um i was a quiet kid i'm still trying to you know uplift my voice but the summer program is just it's just a lot going on like you coming every day you like you can't be not smiling like it's uh it's never a day you're gonna leave without smiling and there's plenty of times we have like plenty of talks after the group like just sitting there till like 12 o'clock at night and the group stops at like 8 30. so
15110 12 is like it's just too far but we always have our time you know everybody have their times when they're down but we always uplift them and we is on people about like everything like trying to get people to be on time you know trying to have black males be like you know strong kids uh women too you know they have their times with the girls but this group is just amazing like it's it's a lot it taught me a lot um man i don't know what what what can't you touch on like it's just a lot of black unity and i really think people should sign their kids up to come here because i want that kid to come here i i came like i want to say three four months and then
152you like kind of recruited me to come here you know it was like right after a game he was like everybody should come and then ever since i've been there and just riding with everybody but like the trip it was fun i never thought i was gonna go on like you know college trip like that you know i've been to like college business but like going on a trip seeing different like towns and different like colleges of like different sorts it was fun like there's a couple colleges that i was seeing that i actually got like interest in so i might be going there soon but yeah this is this is a big family and i think everybody should get their kids involved in it and that's it and i do want to close out
153with two more things um because i know you talked about bringing more teachers here we do have two student interns this summer john ward um he is a 2020 graduate of dhs he is leading our king summer program and then destiny die i tease her because she graduated from shalarman but she is coming back to teach for the district after she graduates from eiu next fall so it's things like that that we're doing here at the start it's things like that that we're doing here at the laura lee that we want everyone to know and then one project that we have coming up is our behavioral health clinic you will hear a lot more announcements coming soon this behavioral health clinic is going to be big for the district for the danville community as well
154but most of all helping students who may not know their avenues in school to get the help outside of school to actually help get them back in school so if there's any questions please let me know but we thank you for your time and this is ubuntu mentoring thank [Applause] you i want to thank you there aren't many people outside of my crazy group of administrators who can ride with me with my when i'm having that thought process and i came to you i'm like here's my thinking i have some money and this is what i'd like to see and this and and so when i talk i'm doing this and you have to be able to to to ride with me and you did it and this is the manifestation of one day and
155you're sitting there going this is what i'm thinking and so i just really want to say i'm grateful for you grateful to you and and and it does my heart just oh really what just good just to see the manifestation of the thought i had one day i appreciate you all right we appreciate you too thank you thank you what we're asking is that we partner with them to possibly even expand i mean that's what sr2 money and sr3 money is all about and um laura we worked when they talked about um your program after school that was after school programs that was a different grant and then now esther ii so we're asking that you um approve that that we recommend that you approve that we partner with laura lee and continue this program
156do you want those things yes yep okay we have a motion in a second uh any questions how much we looking well this is this is what we have set up with them um they will charge us per child and we also have like i told you the monitoring piece that um i'm so you know that's so important to me they're sending me attendance records and also we require they follow up with the kids when they get into high school from the summer program so mr groves has assured me that they will like meet with the counselors or follow up on the kids on their attendance um and so those are the the metrics and then they they just charge us per child so is this the summer program for next year no it's happening
157right now okay well i knew what is happening right now but this is for payment for what's happening yes okay but we would like to expand that to another after school right now we're doing a summer thing but we will probably be bringing to you more after school opportunities as well not just with laura lee so my apologies it's just it's getting late i know so but we thought what who better to tell you about the program but i am so thrilled with these young people that's part of the night right okay well we're excited let's uh let's have a roll call vote wow we excited yeah just your girls and i did not touch on the piece of the summer um this summer we have been working on the english and math portion um
158to make math fun we've actually tied it to entrepreneurship so students may think math is boring but when it comes to their money math becomes interesting so we've actually tied the math piece to entrepreneurship and then the reading piece has been researched and i do like to result that we did a grade check when students first joined the program um you know with covid being at home grades can sometimes be lower getting out the house we had four students that started off with a pretty low gpa that all of our students in our program left a year off passing the class so they have a celebration i'd have to award them in the next two weeks but um it is proud to say that we had some start off very low and then now we
159didn't have any fellow class at the end of the spring semester so that's a benefit from there too and that that's what mr groves agreed to do and he's he's you know been so easy to work with just so you know and so we hope to so mr x what was your budget then for this well for just this summer program i believe it was 58 000. 58 or 54 000 which really is a very little amount for what we what the return receiving um and some of the things that they did i wasn't able to necessarily pay for they they're using other funds as well but um he always works with me and we say okay yes to this or we'll you know we'll check on it so it's been a really good experience
160okay we'll call vote please mrs schreider yes mr dobbles yes mr henderson yes mrs holleran yes pastor miller yes mrs carey yes dr ashton yes function passes 7-0 thank you very much [Applause] [Music] that brings us to 9b district vehicle for okay now i have uh mrs kaczheski and mrs nixon here the educational support office and special special education office is asking approval to purchase a 2019 express passenger van um something extended 3500 as a district vehicle for community and student support mrs kaczewski has been wanting a homeless man a van to help with her homeless deliveries and things like that for a long time so um they're gonna just like share with you some of the things they would be doing with the with the vehicle good evening uh dr getting some board of
161education my name is brandi kashevsky i'm title one grants coordinator working under mrs truax in the grants office and mrs nixon and i would like to share some reasons as to why we feel that a district vehicle to provide community support is beneficial for our district and our families i'm wearing mostly my homeless hat here tonight i'm homeless liaison for district 118. all districts are required by law to have one i am that person for district 118. each year we usually have 150 to 200 students that are identified under homeless law this last year was lower just under a hundred i believe that's more because of pandemic and kids not being in school with us made it a little bit harder to identify however there are many times that we are helping families with many
162things and not just myself in the homeless realm but all of our social workers and our home interventionists and um many of those people on their their daily schedules do much more of that even than i do and there are times when we are assisting families with appointments or housing needs and and we have to um hopefully not too often but sometimes decline because we can't safely transport that family because of their size or we don't have uh the appropriate child restraints or um in addition to that maybe we've helped them locate some housing or something and then we're like okay great you're doing so good and you're working on that next step well then they need some things and we try to help them find those things but of course they don't usually have
163the means to maybe get those items like well we had someone in district that that was getting rid of a bed that's great we have a great place to to take that well they don't have means to pick up that bed or what have you so often times what myself and many of the others district staff that helps those families in need and you do is it's his favorite when i say tomorrow on the way the family birthday party we're gonna clean out your truck and we're gonna deliver this bed but it won't take us long um but it's just so that we can have a means to help families who who need those things and so what we did is we started brainstorming and this helps with the chapter one piece of p20 i
164believe and ensuring equity is just having that means to be able to help families with that next step and getting some of those items and like i said making sure that we can provide that need when the families have it and if we were able to purchase a vehicle to do these things then all of our um if a social worker has a need when um you know they are making a larger delivery sometimes they make two and three trips sometimes where if they do have a larger vehicle like we're proposing in your packet it's a 12 passenger van i already checked and did a little research that the seats could come out or they could fold down if we have to haul larger items but then also we have the three seats if we
165do have larger families or need more child restraints in there not restraints that sounds bad safety seats and so forth to transport them safely yes car seats so we made sure that when we did the research for this we wanted the vehicle to be able to be multi-purposeful and serve many of these needs and not just for myself as homeless liaison or mrs nixon for the part she's gonna talk about but for social workers or um home interventionists that do so many of those things on a daily basis that it's a vehicle um set and ready to go for that so we don't have to beg borrow steel and do whatever we can to get that next step done so i was just going to add that and get utilized on the weekends with dr
166mahome as well as we venture back into in person and some of the families that need to take other children to the appointments um have more space for that thank you sir do you have a second great thank you very much any questions paid for with s or two funds um and we we tied it to that like as far as compliance you know we can help with kids with compliance and everything for code back back from coping and the number on 39 000 seven hundred and twelve dollars and fifty six cents for the van and there's you should have a picture of the van and a little thing of all all the stuff that they have i know at all don't worry okay i got schools any anything else okay see none of the
167motion on the floor is for a district vehicle for a van of 39 000 and whatever um roll coffee please mrs holler yes mrs schreider yes mr dobbles yes mr henderson yes pastor miller yes mrs carey yes and dr aston yes motion passes 7-0 thank you very much very much that brings us to item number 10 curriculum avid tutor pay recommendation who's making that recommendation marietta run this will be the quickest thing all night i promise yeah super on my head okay as much as i can control that um i'm back to ask for an adjustment to the tudor pay as we talked a lot about you saw in all the presentations tonight how much how critical avid is to our district and i would like to be able to show the tutors and encourage
168more folks to become tutors and by recommending a pay increase and that pay increase is twofold for adult tutors so that could be retired teachers retired adults adults anybody that's beyond college age and we would utilize the supportive service rate for them and then for college-age tutors we've always given the tutors minimum wage and so this would for the college age students we would give them minimum wage plus a dollar more and just follow that as time goes on so so second i have a motion and a second do i have any questions or comments i think we're ready to vote all right pastor miller yes mrs schreider yes mr henderson yes mrs carey yes mrs holland yes mr dobbles yes and dr ashley yes yes motion passes 7-0 that teaches you always if you
169want something wait for the really long meeting thank you so much it might backfire on item no i'm only kidding here that brings us to number 11 special education this looks like pbis hello again for dr gettys um molly bailey director of special education i have a mere five things for you this evening um uh but they all kind of most of them go hand in hand um so as mrs button has been working so hard on curriculum i've been working very hard on social emotional learning and the the biggest piece of that kind of goes hand in hand with avid is pbis positive behavior intervention and supports um and our big buildings it takes a lot to run pbis and right now we have one person that we pay um a stipend to do
170that so they're teaching all that all day and then trying to in the evenings um coordinate pbis so i'm proposing tonight that for our big buildings dhs northridge southview and mark denman we pay a second coach to help support that in the building move approval okay i have a motion and a second do i have any questions or comments on that see none we'll call vote please yes yes motion passes 7-0 11 b um also pbis i have been working with midwest pbis dr tan actually kind of got us reconnected this is something we used to do because i think it's been 15 years since we've had pbis in the district what we need to do as we return all of these students to school we need the systems in place we need to teach
171expectations and um actually i've been working with the principals and mr hart and everyone and i'm proposing to completely reinvigorate pbis and we will have three district wide district-wide expectations from pre-k all the way to dhs we have a lot of mobility we have all the kids feed into southview and they learn different p you know our teachers might teach somewhere different the next year and so um i'm proposing that we work closely with them this year and that's what this is um uh what they will provide professional development and actually support us in our district leadership meetings and um we will we are safe we are kind and we are responsible um kind of goes with our we are danville actually is what i'm um proposing for next year so um it is nine
172thousand five hundred and twenty dollars second dollars will come from esser esser correct mr robertson you have that okay i have a motion and a second any questions or comments seen have we ever during this meeting said to the public what esser stands for we've thrown that around a lot but has secondary emergency relief coming from federal federal government okay elementary and secondary emergency relief thank you that's her uh roll call vote please mr dobbles yes mrs holler yes mrs carey yeah mr henderson yes mr schreider yes pastor miller yes mr er dr ashton yes motion passes 7-0 item 11c final pbis thing is um pbs doesn't work without data and right now not only does the coach either have to enter the data so every office and discipline referral um that happens in a
173school either you have to the coach has to enter it or somebody kind enough to do it without pay has been entering it so um in order to be able to have all the data in one place so that you can look at it easily we need someone to enter that and so i'm proposing that we add a stipend for each building um for someone to enter those into what is called swiss um it's a pbis i don't even know if it has an act i don't even know what it stands for to be honest with you um it's it's the system that goes right along with pbis that you enter those referrals into it would be consistent what's with it's in the contract um so i think it's two and a half percent okay
174we can handle that it's pretty good oh it's yes it's based on the size of the building as well so it's just it'll fluctuate it's not based on this right i have a motion and a second any comments or questions which buildings or all of them all buildings all buildings and this would be a stipend that would be paid to one or moral individuals one individual we have done it in the past where if two people want to do it they split that one site but it's still one stipend per building correct okay thank you who would meet the people who would be who qualify for this position anyone would qualify because it's outside of your contractual hours because it's a stipend position so it could be a certified or non-certified person anyone because you're
175just entering data so these positions be posted yes okay roll call vote please this is carrie yeah mr schreider yeah mr dobbles yes pastor miller yes mrs holler yes mr henderson yes dr ashley yes motion passes 7-0 item 11d a recurring theme in special education is hard to fill positions one of those is school psychologists we use retired school psychologists to help us fill this and also to do some mentoring which has helped us maintain some of our current school psychologists the current rate is 58 per hour which was set in 2017 so to remain commiserate with the current salary schedule and proposing an increase of three dollars uh per hour for each of the next two years for a rate of sixty one dollars for twenty one twenty two and sixty four dollars for
176two thousand twenty to twenty three school year i move approval second i have a motion and a second do i have any questions or comments where does that put us with other school districts of course um most school districts don't necessarily do the retired what what you do as contract agency right now you can we can contract with presence learning for ninety dollars an hour okay that's what i needed and that would be a telepsych that would not even be a person in your building right okay he sold me i'm told excuse me can't talk mrs schreider yes mr henderson yes mrs holler yes pastor miller yes mr dobbles yes mrs carey yes dr ashton yes pat motion passes 7-0 thank you 11 e substitute rate same accord um speech and language pathologists um a
177current rate of 55 per hour which was set in 2017 um to remain consistent two dollars per hour for each of the next two school years which would be 57 per hour for 2 000 21 22 approval thank you do you have a second chance because i did the percent kind of thing and so okay any other you have to remain consistent with our salary schedule so any questions or comments mrs tyler yes mrs schreider yes mr henderson yes pastor miller yes mrs carey yeah mr dobbles yes and dr ashley yes mushroom passes 7-0 thank you very very much thank you very much number 12 business of finance and i'm really going to cut to the chase and i'm going to introduce chris coyle from first student he is the area general manager and he's
178going to talk about uh first student in the future mr president uh board and uh dr gettys appreciate this opportunity to get in front of you i had a 45 slide presentation i nixed that so anyway um so we've got some exciting things happening and as as i hear a lot of the reflection on what happened the challenges you had as administrators certainly we were there along the way and i got to admit that i am very very proud of the first student family from our drivers our monitor staff we couldn't be where we're at unless they are we're all in and so in the partnership that we got from the from the district uh really put us into the point where we can serve the community so we we appreciate that high honor there
179um with that uh we do have some changes coming forward our manager ty myers has decided to uh relocate back to south bend we took a new contract over there where that's where he's from he knows the area so that's allowed us to get into a situation where we've got make a decision on bringing a new manager and thankfully we've got a young lady that will be joining us uh officially on monday her name is kaisha fubara and she is an outgoing naval officer that will be joining the uh ranks of the civilians a few of us have been outgoing she's going out of the navy yes okay i thought she's really exuberable she is so i i think what she brings to the table is she is a logistics officer she's been through a
180lot of where i get my uh deliveries how i manage people and she's got a finance background as well and and she's really focused on community so i think she's going to make great fit uh really excited to bring her on team there obviously one of the most challenging two sets of years when it comes to retaining our talent and and recruiting new talent and i i really have to pass on kudos to our recruiting team and really our administrators to retaining our talent that we got there so um are we going to be short absolutely it's a nationwide shortage of school bus drivers we do have a solid pipeline um so if there are going to be any shortages they're going to be short-lived and we're going to continue to to recruit and train
181so that's the one thing that i i came into this industry two years or two years 12 years ago it seems like two uh and and in that the the challenge of recruiting back then is totally different than what it is now back then you would recruit for about nine months and you kind of take it easy and go through the summer well you can't afford to do that now so we've really taken that that challenge and moved forward to that so um i really that's what i wanted to just kind of pitch to you the next board meeting be happy to bring in uh kaisha the new manager and introduce it so chris you also have the assignment of your contract that that's me okay uh just what chris isn't telling you the first
182student has been sold um to to another company um eqt infrastructure and we had our attorneys obviously look at the contract make sure that we was you know good to stay in there and um you know basically they're saying unless something sticks out you're kind of obligated to stay in the contract anyway um so my recommendation is we continue our contact with our change our contract to eqt infrastructure move approval second i have a motion in a second any questions or comments are you with the new company i'm always yes you better read it yeah in essence eqt when he's talking about his infrastructure they're a a finance group that has allowed us so it's not a competitor like if you were laid law at one point was bought out by first student that's not
183the case we've actually got a parent company that's just uh a financing group in essence so yeah so you're not going to see any change whatsoever name stays this first name stays the same email changes right you'll go to my choke mail for another three years they're in the wheat norwegian company so still may have issues okay any other questions or comments if not roll call vote please pastor miller yes mrs schroeder yes mr henderson yes mrs carey mrs hyler yes mr dobbles yes dr ashton yes motion passes 7-0 uh thank you transportation we thank you very much we really appreciate it sorry to keep you this late but it's been enjoyable okay that brings us to item 13 of 27 buildings and grounds oh skip wake up okay i'm good good evening board dr
184gaddis uh first thing on the list i'd like to ask the board for today is uh permission for architectural engineering uh bidding documents for the food science renovation at danville high school and i will be glad to make that motion for consumer food science room at danville high school second have a motion a second any questions or comments well that was easy roll call vote please mr henderson yes yes yes motion passes 7-0 that's the easiest of the night okay 13 13 b keep it on a roll i'm going uh the second thing i'm asking requests for this evening is uh um bidding architectural and engineering bidding documents for uh new heating and air conditioning systems let me finish it up for you i got you i'm good okay now i got it yeah okay
185northridge south view in markdon uh i'm sorry um northridge south view yeah i'm good you want me to get it south view mark demonstration i got it okay uh elementary schools sorry i apologize okay we got you move approval second okay we have a motion and a second request permission to receive bids from the architect manager for hi hvac of northridge south view and mark denman explain this to us will you skip okay uh well uh where do i start well i don't know i'm not really sure where to start so let me just go ahead and take a break okay so uh we need to do hbac systems to do repairs to them at the actually the three schools that have been um renovated marked them and and yeah we've had ongoing problems there
186for quite some time we really need to update those systems um they've yeah we've spent a lot of money in repairs and um honestly they just uh the life expectancy of them is not you know that much longer than what we've already had and we're talking at one point we were talking about redundancy you know in some is that what we're talking about or total redo no we're we're not talking about redundancy we're actually talking about redoing them and this is just this is correct and these are just this this is the this this would be for design documents for that yeah for that purpose alone um the systems themselves we've had a lot of problems with i'd say in the last five years i know we spent five to seven hundred thousand dollars in
187repairs yeah going for whole new systems different yes and it would be paid for by s or two so so skip and you know i know you're not feeling the best up there but i did have some questions as well although that's fine good i'm on the uh because i i thought that our we initially had talked to you know a priority system as far as the hvac systems and i was thinking that we had talked about some different schools as having higher priority i do know that we've had problems at south view uh we talked about that a lot uh i wasn't aware about problems that mark dimmitt i don't think but i just wondered why why this got moved up okay because of vests or two funds um basically they're available and you
188know there's time limits there we will attack the other problems with the s or two or s or three okay so like northeast northeast was a school that you've talked with us about needing to be done so that would come later then is what i'm hearing you say yes okay garfield or excuse me i've had mcgarville liberty mead park have we had any problems there at all meade park everything is new within the last uh five years um i do have liberty on the horizon the the systems on the uh south side of liberty of course are new we just put those in two years ago the three units up front will need to be replaced okay soon but they're there i have those set to be replaced on sr3 okay basically so they'll be
189coming later yeah thank you that is one of those things right right yeah you explained that the last minute we know that okay we all know that here um cost yeah uh what we for designing to receive bins it's the reason there's no cost okay it's just a receipt okay we're good yep we're good roll call vote please yes yes seven zero thank you very much sorry i apologize thanks again thanks again you got this that's no problem yeah 13c i forgot i got one more to go no no no we got it no good night 13c uh yes good evening board dr gettys um we went out for bid on the auditory maybe lighting and rigging improvements at danville high school and it looks like we received three bids the lowest being tsi global
190companies in saint charles missouri at 893 thousand five hundred dollars uh of course after reviewing the skip reviewed the bids with dan wakefield uh thrive stack reid architecture it's his recommendation that the contract be awarded to tsi global companies at that bid amount isn't that a pretty high skip isn't it pretty high it is high and i know that at least 400 000 of that is for the rigging are we also partnering with the foundation and we're also partnering with the foundation first of all i'm going to move approval and then thank you mr henderson do i have a second second and i will as a uh dr gettys please correct me if i'm wrong but i believe the foundation is contributing 360 thousand dollars towards this project which was an increase of 110 000
191of what they originally had shared with us that is correct and then with the expectation that our cost also increased by about 300 000 we expected that these costs would this bid would come in at about 500 with kovit the change of uh and the inaccessibility of both the staffing and materials they actually came in the lowest bid came in five hundred thousand dollars more than we thought right wow and that's the lowest bid and again a lot of the had to do with rigging um something that wasn't anticipated they looked at it and they said this is a serious safety concern but may i add we need to do this absolutely okay this is it it's like you can debate it all you like but we really need to do this and we've committed
192and with the foundations that on board so i would hope that we'd move let me also share this as i shared with the foundation um the timeline is we are concerned because we have the midwest classic coming up we absolutely need everything to go right and well um we do know that in this covet climate materials are scarce and so our uh their their their ability to find staff that is also becoming difficult we may run up with challenge run into challenges when it comes to midwest classes so we may not have that so i want to put that out there now so that we are not surprised when we get there yeah correct we just we hope that we make it though really i mean the the the optimism is that we may make
193it but we're up against the wall any other comments or questions could it be pretty clear with tsi that inside that we do have that deadline it's sort of a loose deadline with the classic coming up but that they understand your our urgency and i get it about supply and demand staff i get it but i know that has been communicated to everyone that has been that's part of the brief pre-bid meeting um salary and i uh spoke to mr truax from that very question and he is very uh very what's the word that i'm looking for optimistic yes he feels very good that this is going to be done in a timely manner great one last comment and that is normally i want to go with a local bid the local bid is significantly
194higher and so normally i i vote no when it's not a local bid but in this case it is so much higher that it would be irresponsible just any others if not we'll call vote please yes motion passes 7-0 thank you thank you very much bring this to item number 14 there are three items in here a b c um northeast um who wants to move this forward as a presentation who's presenting these i don't know that we have a presenter but i would move that northeast school be removed from any further consideration as a prequel preschool site in respect to the facilities conversation that's your motion that's my motion great do you have a second for that second great i have a motion in a second any questions or comments i do have some
195comments because i feel like i need to be able to provide some rationale on why i believe that's important first of all i don't believe that moving the preschool center there is is a good decision because again i don't know that it is well i'll move forward moving the program to liberty uh number one which is part of the conversation back in may uh in my opinion would enhance the opinion of others that uh northeast school is this elitist school by moving it up to the north end i think that would only enhance that opinion instead of keeping it at its current location second of all by by moving the building to excuse me by moving the program it is late i'm going to try to slow down by moving the program to liberty school
196that will then disrupt the liberty school community that the teachers there would then need to be reassigned and moved to another location the question that i have is where would that location be because we wouldn't in fact be eliminating an elementary school by moving northeast there liberty then becomes no longer becomes a school thought staff would be as i said would be disseminated at the same time we've had conversations regarding the high cost that is going to take at garfield school and that there has been there was also discussed at that may meeting that garfield school may be something that would be closed in the discussion for facilities by closing both liberty and garfield because again liberty would no longer be in elementary school we would then be short two elementary schools in the district
197which would necessitate moving children from liberty moving children from garfield which of course we do need to do some redistricting the question is is do we have enough room at southwest meade park and mark dimmon to be able to facilitate all those children so that's my rationale for asking that that be removed from further consideration as a preschool sitter um i'd like to go next um okay i think that this is very premature it was stated in the last few board member meetings that no decisions had been made about closing any buildings moving anybody it was information that was received through surveys from parents and i believe that magnet school will stay no matter where they are but the thing that bothers me about this is that we keep talking about one school one elementary
198school in this district when there are a lot of elementary schools and i'm talking about conversations i'm having from other teachers who feel like mr henderson that we are only focusing on northeast as a board right wrong or whatever what i would like to see us do as a board as look at redistricting because i worked at mark dimmon i looked at how 800 kids are in that building i subbed as the parent liaison i don't know why i had to go all the way out almost to 150 to get a parent for mark dimmer if there's anything we need to do right now is look at the total district and how we are sending kids my my grandkids are getting ready to go to school i don't want them on a bus for an
199hour and a half my thing is we want to focus on one building why can't we focus on the total let's look at where all these children are going to school nor these kids select to go there okay that's fine that's great but these other kids don't don't get a choice they're either put on a bus our parents have to take them so why not look at the total picture of where all of our children are going then make some decisions and come back to the table so that everybody feels like their voice is being heard every parent you know that's my thing i i just it just really bothers me that we keep talking about one building when we got all these other buildings all these other kids and you know you say we
200don't we're not listening to each other i'm listening to y'all you're saying to me parents are saying to me well my my building is important just like the other buildings so my thing is nothing against northeast because i want anybody going outside this magnet school i think it should stay yes i have no problems with that what i'd like to see us though do is look at redistricting across the district this is kerry i think you have some valid cleansing that um part of the reason that there appears to be focus on northeast is because it isn't like all the other buildings it isn't like all the other schools it is our only magnet school and it stands alone because of that and so it just automatically draws that attention um and it is not
201i don't believe at uh the expense of all the other schools and i i think you do have some very valid points but i think the point that that northeast is a magnet school and and it is a school that we're proud of and uh we're we're trying to preserve what it is and i would disagree with kerry because i think we've talked about several schools tonight in several schools to put hvac in and so we're doing a lot of renovations and we've talked about northeast for a long time i think it's time if to make a commitment and go there and stick with it as magnet school where it is and mrs kerry just as a follow-up and i appreciate your your words as i was speaking one of the concerns that i have
202is with the liberty staff because if you move that program to liberty the liberty staff no longer is a liberty community that school no longer exists so when i'm speaking i'm speaking about all of our schools and the impact that it has on all of them and i don't disagree mr kerry we have to look at redistricting because we have a problem i think the last time we redistrict was when you and i were working where was it miss kerry back in 2006 maybe yeah i think that northeast the northeast building needs to be considered in the totality of the facilities of the entire district northeast is a special school because it is our magnet school and it's our health and wellness school and it is a jewel in the crown of the district and
203we we love what you do there and it doesn't necessarily mean that it is fair to the rest of the district that it should move to the head of the line and when we consider all of the facilities in a big picture i look at it as a slide puzzle and you have to move one piece in order to move another piece and if one piece has is glued you might not get the best picture for the whole district um it could be and it could be that everything stays exactly the same for northeast but i i feel that we need if we put that ahead of considering the entire district we would be doing the entire district a disservice mr henderson talked about liberty being one of the suggestions of where maybe to move
204the magnet school community again that was just a suggestion because we were bringing up you know thoughts and ideas in the facilities discussion and dr gettys explained last week that there were they're going to be last last time we were together that there's no changes happening this year because there's no time there would be no time but we my my thinking is that we we must consider the facilities of this building in the whole context of the entire district not that it doesn't make that the magnet school extremely important and special because it is it is and mrs schrader i'd like to point out that i've been on the board uh through this is my third term and from the very first term we were discussing northeast school and we were discussing uh the facility
205itself and what needed to happen there and in the interim we uh we took our elementary buildings from k five to k four but what did we do to northeast we made them k six and we didn't do a single thing to the building to accommodate that improvement or i mean i'm sorry that change so this it isn't a matter of putting them ahead in the line we have we've had one facilities meeting and to my knowledge i've not seen a list of priorities anywhere where anything is above anything else this is a discussion to try to let the northeast school community know that in fact we appreciate how crowded they are and we appreciate that there need to be some changes in their school in order to accommodate their population i don't believe i
206don't agree with the putting anybody ahead in the line it's just that we need to have the conversation and we need to move it forward we've talked about this for way too many years i was going to ask skip when he was here the first architectural ideas that he had from an architect about how to add on to that building years ago i would just like to just say because we haven't finalized what we're going to do with all of the facilities we're just starting to try to figure out and i'm in uh favor of you know northeast with everybody else i just want us to be able to make sure that when we sit down at the table that we are including all of our schools what would be the best for the totality
207of our district and for all of our students in every location and that's my only concern is that we're at the beginning we have one meeting and so i don't know what the outcome is going to be but i would like for us to be able to sit down and look at every building every location and everything that's involved with our district uh concerning how to best serve all of our students in every location so that's my concern if we were further down the road and we had more information on what is going to be best what schools are going to uh continue what locations none of those things have been decided you know we're going to redistrict we're going to have to redistrict but all this just entailed not to have all that information
208i wouldn't want us to just say goodnight we're not going to consider we would anyway unfair to the whole district and all the other uh principals and all the other students and all the other parents and what i would say you know pastor miller is that again like mrs saller said we've discussed this for a long time in the meantime when we've discussed this we've renovated edison we've renovated liberty we've renovated meat park we've just voted tonight to do renovations at our denman at southview and at northridge now you can say that we're stepping out of ourselves but we could say that in every one of them so it's time to make a decision about um northeast now if there are four people that don't want to make that decision that's the way it goes
209that's the vote but i don't think you can argue that we haven't already done things to other schools okay and even with this decision tonight we still need to redistrict we still have overcrowding and some of our buildings and and are under utilizing others i again will say you know when what was brought up in may was utilizing northeast as a potential preschool center my opinion on that is that there are two options for preschool center one is that it be reinstated back at mark denman but second and more favorable is for us to build a preschool center there on the day of a high school property so that it can be utilized in a uh again a very central location so that you know not on your across the street tracy yeah across the
210across the street you know it'll have its own it'll have its own principle she woke up i wake you up miss chairman but uh you know but again you know as as i'm sharing with you if we are really concerned regarding garfield school that was very clear about the cost that it was going to take you moved the preschool center to north to northeast and you moved the northeast program to liberty we did not talk about in may what happens to the liberty staff what happens to the liberty students liberty students of course will be you know reassigned to other buildings but what happens to the liberty staff and that culture because i'm concerned about that as well just as you shared can we as a board say we've dropped the ball on facilities it's
211time for us to deal with facilities i don't care if it's northeast i don't care if whatever building because you know my big thing is i want the library and the science labs at the high school done so you know that's my big thing so all of us have our own individual things but we need to address everybody so can we vote because it's past my bedtime and um let's i'm asking as a board meeting remember that we set a date for facilities to sit down we start looking at what we have and make some decisions and come back and bring it to the table and say okay this is what we've done this is where everybody falls this is who's next who's here and i know about the what we voted on tonight i
212understand that we you know so i'm i'm new on this so i i don't know what y'all did before what i'm asking is that we do now that's all i can ask because i don't know what happened before me but i can say hearing everybody tonight we've dropped a bottle somewhere we i'm putting on nobody we and i'm part of the new group so let's correct what we've done mistake a trip to phone and let's go from there mr president i think we may be completing items 14 a and 14 b in our discussion um we were we've been talking about improvements to the building and the motion was that is true but they're kind of related because they want to keep it away from this so that's why but we are only voting on
21314a northeast building remains the magnet school and remove it from further consideration as a preschool site in facilities conversations and now i will make a comment um i personally would love to see northeast state where northeast is okay i think it's just right i think it's the right place my kids went there okay but i do have a problem and i agree that northeast should not be taken off the consideration because we just want northeast to stay there it's fair to everybody that everybody's in the pool but i'm telling you i would gonna fight for northeast to stay in the final in the final thing i don't like the idea that it changes and goes to something else it's it's just the right fit it just seems like the right fit but this motion right
214now i don't think it's the right time to go and i really think it's i i have to kind of agree with them it's just kind of slapping the face of the other schools and and the other parents i understand why the motion though and i really understand why because i i agree so i'm torn on this i really torn on this one um and we'll see how i vote in a little bit if there aren't any other uh uh comments we'll just have a real call vote no yes no the motion fails 4-3 [Music] um 14b because it does not preclude that because you can still i think it does it does it does because no because you there's no reason at this point in time to talk about improvements at northeast as a
215magnet school if it's not been decided that it's going to remain a magnet school because certainly if you do a facilities discussion you would want to be look and you decide to move the preschool there that changes the conversation finally you don't need a music room you don't need a enhanced library uh it just changes the conversation so i move that we move that from the uh from consideration tonight thank you then that will bring us to item number 15 any informational items let's go back to 14 just for a second okay not i've already talked about it okay and um i have requested that we remove that item from the agenda okay because we don't have it it's oh we don't have an amendment we only can have an amendment if we have an
216agreement with the uh dea and the board both agree on how to amend the contract and so although i think that there i the board has uh said that if the dea wants to look at some of the questions that have written about the contract that they will sit down with the dea and see if there is some kind of um amendment you want to work out but that's up to the dea and the board and then both would have to agree that state things fairly that's a reasonable i but the mean has said we will be willing to sit down and talk about some of those issues that's all thank you item 15 informational item none uh board superintendent comments site at 16. i'm actually have none we list everyone wants to go home
217so i will take all my comments and move them to the next meeting out of respect i know there are other people who have lots to say so that's awesome any other comments i do go ahead first of all i'd like to thank all the presenters they've provided a wealth of information to the public tonight so thank you to all of you for for all the hard work second of all i would like to again thank the danville school foundation the board mr truax on the renovation of the high school auditorium proposal these renovations will be a wonderful asset to our community i also had the opportunity to see the work in the gymnasium in the field house that we authorized oh my goodness even though it's not finished uh it is just amazing and
218then the machinery is moving at the parking lot at danville high school and i'm going to tell you again a wonderful wonderful addition or improvement to the high school uh last of all i am appreciative that the the reports that i talked about last meeting that were provided by both liz small and mark dimmon were posted on the district 11 118 website but at the same time the fact that we spent 46 thousand dollars on these reports and that the link to both of them is not on the district homepage for the public to be able to have easy access to the to to the information is a little disheartening to me instead these items were embedded into dr ashton's comments and very difficult for the public to locate i don't believe that this is
219transparent to the community that we serve and i'm making a request that these links to both of these reports we put on the home page of the website i'd also like to know what arrangements have been made now that the coveted restrictions have been removed for both ms small and mr dimon to present their information to us in a public forum i'm certainly certain that fellow board member miss schroeder who recommended miss small to do the survey will second that request and certainly make certain that that happens i i just hope that we don't have to again utilize sport policy 2.22 in order to have this put on the agenda so again i'm asking that we make arrangements with schroeder i hope that you concur with that that we make arranged for liz small and
220mark dimmond to come and and make their presentation i'll go ahead and speak to that um i do i actually don't occur concur with that um since we have access to both full reports and the reports are available to the public in their entirety i know that miss small when she had her when she delivered her initial report to i know it was dr gettys and mr dobbles and maybe dr asher was there it was a three-hour presentation and that i think would be quite excessive um when we could read what it is that they said and you know i i think that the the purpose of these the purpose of these reports were to number one get public input um and inform the inform the district about what the public and what the teachers
221were um what they what what the real true feedback was about the district and if you read them it there i can tell you i was not that surprised it was what i was hearing and so i am very glad that people were direct and frank and gave gave their true feelings about what was going on and now the purpose the reason we did that was so that we could use it as a foundation going forward for a strategic plan which is the next step what the community needs is the strategic plan what the community needs is to be able to look at what we had what we what we did do but now we need to be focusing on what's next and use this data to move forward so so i did not concur
222with bringing bringing two more groups of people in to talk about about more presentations i'm i would be more in line with let's have action and let's get our our strategic plan moving forward with this as the funding foundational data which was exactly the reason that we had these these two um reports prepared in the first place and the other thing i would say is i would i would agree to thank you for the all the presenters and parents the parents thank you so much community members thank you so much for showing up at this board meeting it is super late and you are here because you care about your children and we have incredible respect for you we have so much respect for you and we thank you that you have been advocates advocates
223for your family and for this district this it makes me very proud just a dovetail uh on you miss trader i have uh i am aware that ms small would like to make a presentation to the board and i'm aware that there are a number of community people who would like to hear from her about uh about the report it doesn't have to be a three-hour presentation but those are the comments that that i'm hearing but again i'm glad you said that because i hadn't she had not indicated that to me on on another note i want to echo my thanks this has been a very long meeting they're not usually this long but i thank you and i think mostly because we are a community um that we come together when we need to
224come together and and if we are divided uh we were very respectful of one another tonight and respectful of uh other people's opinions and to me that's what danville is and i want to thank you i want to thank you for that i want to thank you for the leadership that you've shown as parents and staff it means a lot and and it gives me hope that no matter how divided we are in our opinions uh there is hope that we'll come together and do what's best for the kids and for the community i just want to take a short moment to say i want to thank dr giddis for birthing the program at laura lee when we're seeing those young people tonight it touches me but we hear of so much violence within our
225own community and i already know that when our young people are not given opportunity to discover their brilliancy their greatness and again in their own day it takes away the opportunity to be out in the streets and get with the wrong people and so i'm very very thankful uh to uh dr guidas and everyone else that's worked to david allen for this program the after-school program as well as the summer program i'm just very very encouraged that these young people will not be taken by the streets because of this program i would just miss douglas i would just like to say thank you too to the parents um i watched another board meeting uh not our district but a board meeting that was sent to us to watch um i thought it was sent to
226us to watch so we'd know how to act um but um when as i'm watching the board meeting i'm i'm like oh my god um i am i sure hope our parents come ready but please don't be like those parents i applaud you you were fantastic you just don't know our anxiety coming out here not knowing what was going we were going to face you know i i love to hear people i don't i sent emails out to people and said look i don't care what your opinion is but come to the board meeting tonight so we can hear your opinion because i don't want it to be said that we made decisions and didn't consider now you know i mean i don't like us afterwards you know we may not we're not going to
227satisfy everybody but we are listening and i took notes uh oh donald um okay uh to mr henderson uh i'm sorry if you think that we made that cumbersome we will remove any uh cumbersome way to get to that report we did it to for transparency to put it out there so with no thought or intention of making it difficult to get that report we want you to be able to get it want everyone to read it and we'll find out whether four board members want to have that presentation if we want to have that presentation we'll have that presentation because uh that's how a board works and if the majority of the board wants to uh have that presentation i think that's a great that's a great idea um you know to go to
228the home page go to board of education to go to board members to go to you and then to find it embedded i thought it was difficult for the public as i said i'll remove that and we'll make it as easy as possible okay it certainly was not the intent of that whatsoever we want to make it accessible well i'll say it again um and with that this like dr gettys has said this is a long meeting and i'm not going to take exception to anything else i certainly do appreciate you all coming with that we are adjourned i can't believe you mean that's a record i'm proud of you mr david i'm gonna say i think
