[Music] if anybody is watching this you can tell we have some amazingly Dynamic smart wonderful kids in dating Public Schools tell me why you're in dating Public Schools um I like going to EJ Brown because of the staff I like that St yeah you got a new principal he is good mhm he walks around a lot checks on you guys I like him I want to be a robotics engineer I want to take that to college and do great things with it how'd you come up with that yeah I'm in a pathway called Advanced manufacturing and I'm taking that currently so your exposure or your experience in advanced manufacturing that you start thinking about hey this is the field I want to go into yes sir yes awesome I like going to Belmont because I
like the people and I like the teachers I like the staff and especially like the principal Miss mdll I want to go to Dayton public schools because I feel like every single teacher in Dayton public schools are really appreciated of the students that they have and show a lot of love to them mhm what I like most about the district is all of the opportunities that they have such as DPS University where you can earn college credits while you're still in high school the staff is really welcoming and they're always pushing you to do your best in whatever you do I'm looking forward to getting some of my college credits already out of the way before I go to college I have a lot of favorite staff members but the one who I would say
influences me the most is most likely miss Mo because she just stays on top of everyone and she makes sure that you're doing well and having a good day and stuff like that I'm thinking of studying law and becoming a lawyer because I don't really like the laws we have have now so I'd like to maybe change them I like it so you want to be an advocate yes DeAndre I've thought about being a realtor I always wanted to uh what get rid of yeah yeah I'mma tell you I've never heard a kid say that I wanted to get rid of the whole bunch of empty vacant houses around my neighborhood feel me it just seemed like a good thing to do cuz it just make the neighborhood look bad even though it's good people
around there it just make my neighborhood look bad the whole staff and administration helped me get through my sophomore year all the way to my senior year King I appreciate you sharing that space where you said you had some adversity you know and that this hasn't always been an easy Road and there was a whole family that wrapped their arms around you I want you to know how much we in Dayton public schools are proud of you uh first of all and how much we uh how much we wish you the best in the future and we hope that you stay in touch with us so we're able to talk about what a graduate looks like as they move out into the world and and and do things other than High [Music] School the program
is a eight session once a month kind of class that occurs on Udi's campus and the whole idea is to have teachers be reflective in terms of their own implicit biases their own privileges their own um life experiences that they bring into the classroom we wanted to give them the tools of some of the antiracist teachings culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive instructional practices that will accelerate student learning so that was our thought process and so how do we support new teachers that's kind of the the origins of it how do we support new teachers who did not go through a urban teacher Academy how do we give them the tools the the content the pedagogy um the skill sets the awarenesses um so that they can be successful in the classroom if they're successful obviously
kids are successful and that's really what it's all about it's really good to have that support it's like when you're in school studying on your own is cool but when you have a study group is better because other people might have picked up on some things that you might not have noticed so it's like having other people to fill in those gaps where you feel like you're lacking but also being able to support somebody else in the gap that they're lacking and their teaching skills as well it's good to have somebody to discuss those issues with so it's like I'm not the only one that feels this type of way and then figuring out well I met with the parents and this is going on so figuring out strategies to help you in class whether
it's you're having issues with parent interactment whether you're having issues with like students becoming interactive with things or just like lesson plans like for me I feel like the thing that I need to help with was like the flow of the classroom how I wanted things to go like okay if we're doing a microbiology unit what should I start with what should I end with how do I do test um so really just being able to bounce back ideas having resources and having people that have been there and went through that already and getting advice from them cuz like it's cool hearing from like the new teachers cuz some of us have the same struggles but hearing from the season teachers that have already had that experience I feel like that also makes a difference
as well um I actually started my journey at DPS student teaching so I went to UD and I had the opportunity to student teach here and I ended up loving it so much that I moved from Chicago my hometown for here um and I've been at the district for about 2 years it's my second year of teaching the new teacher collaborative has been at solutions to become better teachers to share resources to share stories um that will only make us grow together and become the best teachers we can be hi my name is Tiffany Reeves and I'm a gifted intervention specialist with Dayton public schools A Gifted intervention specialist is a teacher who works with students who are capable of learning at a faster Pace than other students their age I enjoy watching the moment
that a student discovers something new or recalls something and makes a connection between something that they've learned that I've taught them it it fills me up with so much joy and happiness and it's payment within itself the excitement in their eyes and on their face really says it all that makes me come to work every day excited for a new experience as a graduate myself of an all girls school it is such a pleasure to work for charity Adams or at charity Adams because I believe that young ladies need a role model and I've become a role model as well as an advocate for students here and that is very exciting to me Dayton public schools is a wonderful place to work and you will get tremendous support here and you will get a lot
of opportunities to make a difference spe h [Music] president Smith president Miss Weck present Dr uh goodwine here Dr Bailey present Mr Lacy here Mr Walker present Miss reard present and Mr Nicholas present eight present thank you can we stand for the Pledge of Allegiance all right good evening good evening once again we'll start off this evening we have a couple presentations could you take it away Dr Lawrence and let us know what our presentations are about everyone our first presentation Associates they've been doing some work the last four or five months in operations and part of that work has been to determine um how happy we are at work I think it's important here in Dayton public schools that we delve into spaces like that so that we can make sure we retain um
all 2500 employees that's been part of the things we've been talking about on our on our community tour retention employees so we've got some um Consultants here have done some research and we're looking forward to hearing them thank hello everyone microphone you missed the joke just saying good evening everyone I'm glad to be here I'm felia Charlton from Charlton Charlton Associates and good evening everyone I'm Dr Eric Charlton with Charlton Charlton Associates and and we are so um uh thankful to be invited to present our findings um with the Ops Department once we once the screen comes up we'll get started one moment we were introduced to the work when um then business manager um Dr David Lawrence um we wanted to take a look um at the Ops Department in the areas of employee
retention workplace trauma workplace Place happiness climate and culture and creating a psychological safe space for the employees in the operations Department next slide my my background deals with leadership identity and happiness um I'm an emotional wellness coach leadership coach and researcher and I've been around the country working in 25 different states in um in health care settings in particular started my career in healthcare but branched out into leadership and now I work with um seite employees Executives um organizations to work with some of the psychological issues dealing with employees uh where it's moral injury whether there's burnout compassion fatigue and emotional well-being um my background is uh considerable I have a a bachelor's degree in Health and Human Services at wal Force Masters in health administration from Ohio University a MERS in leadership and change
from anoch University and a PhD in leadership and change from anoch University as well next slide I am coach felia I am coach felia Charlton I am not Dr Charlton he's the only person with his Doctorate so just wanted to make that clear I am a certified life coach through the ICF I'm also a proud graduate from medale high school we don't have to mention the class but um it's a while ago I'm a trauma informed emotional Wellness expert I used to also be a principal at Dayton business tech for over seven years I absolutely Lov that work that I did there and while I was there we were the first alternative school in the country to be named a National Urban School of Excellence so and we were able to graduate over 500 students
at that time and that's really been one of the joys of my career which really led me to the work that I do now in emotional Wellness because I know that once people know that you care about them they will perform for you and so it's not always about the data it's about the relationship and that's part of why we're here today one of my mantras is just to be fairly optim optimistic and believing that something else is possible and I also have my bachelor's degree in project management went to University of Dayton for my principal lure did my uh teaching work at w State University and I finished my project management degree at Jones International University next slide a little bit more about us in terms of our history um both coach fthy and
I we have a well over 25 years now of um experience dealing with um Education and healthc Care respectively but also um in the past seven or eight years diving into um emotional Wellness um we have uh Paul's pivot transcend model for for overcoming um obstacles that may hinder one's personal professional growth um we consult we train we coach and also we um Express healing and resilience through the Arts uh we have facilitated emotional Wellness um literally across the world um most um most recently last year in Mexico and Portugal um talking about emotional Wellness with different um organizational groups next slide please we just want to make sure that we're giving you just a background for those of us who are new to us we also are certified with our MBE our Edge certification
um our women and business certification recently completed the Goldman sack small business alumni program and also just recently got our Dayton pep certification as well and now that we're through the formalities next slide please so the objectives of the project Dr Charlton printed these out y'all the objectives of the project are to explore uh workplace happiness and just kind of what the definition is because it can be Broad and understand the relevance in employees lives we also did qu quantitative and qualitative analysis that we created specifically for the Dayton public operations team then we looked at the themes individually um for everyone in the department looking at what are the practices that they consider that make them happy at work and we did this in a safe space and part of emotional well-being is to
improve and create Brave and courageous conversations with professionals and the end result that you'll see is the matric that we created based on the survey the findings and the interviews that we did all right next slide some of the purpose of the project that we um undertook was uh facilitating a five-month workplace happiness leadership and team building uh professional development framework that address workplace happiness retention and customer service um creating an environment that facilitates this work that aligns with the Ops um Department goals uh collaborated with management um with Administration um and staff to explore key values of workplace happiness with Department of culture climate and employee expectations and partner to assist um partnering to assist a a um a cultural framework of trust empathy and teamwork that contributes to Place retention next slide anytime
you you conduct interviews um or collect qualitative data there are ethical guidelines by which you you must um uh you're you're Guided by and some of those um were were confidentiality making sure that um only we we we conducted the interviews virtually making sure that we were the only ones who um stored the the videos who can see the videos um keeping everything confidential even though there were some some themes collected there weren't any names associated with the themes um quotes didn't have any identifiers with it so they were definitely strict eth ethical guidelines whenever we we conduct um one-on-one um collection processes of of data next Slide the process overview consisted of three main things um interviews online surveys and focus groups we interviewed 14 members of the Ops Team virtually we also conducted
um 20 25 um surveys um well surveys that that consisted of 25 questions at liyer scale questioning and also three different focus groups um collecting that that data um buffering and augmenting those those um collection points from three different perspectives next Slide the project timeline we began the work in August where we initially talked um to construct what we wanted to do and how we could support the district we developed the framework then as Dr Eric stated we did 15 interviews with the operations Department we also disseminated the survey that we did custom for the district then we held those focus group meetings in person to make sure that everybody's voice was reflected we worked through the dissemination of the findings and put everything together and then we created The Matrix and the final report
and we also met with the operations team so they were able to view this report before we shared it with the board next slide we know that workplace happiness is is is very broad um so we wanted to to really talk about um what how to define workplace happiness is really what defines happiness within us as human beings um we have different backgrounds personalities perspectives expectations that we have and what what makes one happy may not make the other um another person happy and what we our definition of workplace happiness is the elements of an employees work engagement job satisfaction and organizational um commitment that equates to a positive work experience next slide so why is workplace happiness so important we are in the age of quiet quitting we are in the age of people
transitioning in their careers and we're also in the age of people seeing what value their career has with their lives and so we know that most employees spend most of their time at work we also know that when someone is satisfied with their job and their overall personality is improved and their productivity is improved as well and we know that a good work environment makes people wake up wanting to come to work instead of counting their days for the weekend and we also know that we want people who are loyal um we want people to take ownership in their work and happiness personally and professionally contribute to the results that they deliver the happiness Matrix uh consist let me I guess Define what a matrix is first um it's a diagram representing a set of
conditions in which an organ organization grows or develops those elements in which an an organization or Department um has seen growth or or develop and it could be positive or negative um but a matrix we we developed this this Matrix based off the um employee surveys the the interviews and the focus groups um and it provided us with a with um some a a a target a direction in which um we we can help take to prepare the district to to shift the uh the workplace environment and I'll I'm going to dive into the The Matrix um exclusively in a second next slide please these are stats that you well probably are already well aware of as to why this work is necessary but we know that there's an issue with retaining employees and a
lot of burnout that's felt and I know you faced that here in terms of how to manage and handle the district moving forward and so just a reminder that even though we're facing these these issues locally that there's people that are facing these issues nationally as well next slide please and not not only in um I know all of you have experienced in terms of Education in terms of what the pandemic has has um affected and U affected everyone um in terms of um globally um 22% of employees across the globe are um have overall engagement um and two to three of every 10 employees um are truly motivated at work and a lot of my research deals with um postco leadership um what how leadership looks and how it is viewed post pandemic next
slide please so when we did this work we worked with people about your attitude your belief system and your values so happiness is not something necessarily that can be created but it's within and it needs it can be evolved and it can be cultivated to help shape the uh workplace culture so the way that you think the way that you believe and the things that you value and the things that you consider important were all part of the conversations that we had with the operations team next slide some of the the survey themes that we collected were um um were inter internally driven to do great things at work um the Ops Department were truly um driven to do great things um developing a clear progression of career opportunities based on Merit and seeking opportunities
to re-evaluate rethink compensation and benefits the other things that were important that came up in the survey were the organ the Ops department wants to strengthen their image and value within the organization to be seen as a part of the team not separate um to understand the value that they make and some of the contributions that are extremely significant in partnership with academics as opposed to separated um we also found that they are inspired by their work and they see themselves as a part of the academic process because if they don't do their job then other things can't happen and that's really important to them and that's a message that they don't feel like gets out as much next slide some other things to ponder in terms of other significant points is creating strategies that
that ensure external forces do not hinder progress mission and vision um the team don't want to lose the Synergy created due to multiple uh leadership changes and they are happy that the district is open to change but want to ensure that their voices are included next slide all right the The Matrix that we um we created um it does deal with the themes that we collected as you can see there's three pillars um reality connection and purpose uh reality deals with the day-to-day um emotions and experiences that that the team was filling is filling um connection um rethinking about our relationship to work and also purpose um finding meaning in what we do and finding value in it um as you can see under reality we have different themes uh such as uh turnover in
terms of emotional state burnout and fatigue um external and internal strengths and forces and and threats as it relates to connection um things things such as communication recognition cohesion accountability and respect and lastly purpose service Mission driven truly they inspired uh feeling valued and creating a positive experience for patrons as you can see um also on the Matrix there are three emotional states emotional feelings uh isolation frustration and commitment how these relate to this Matrix is for example if a if an employee has a good sense of reality and connection but don't really find uh have a purpose in in in their work they can be um uncommitted and even though this this group um we put commitment on there because they have a high level of commitment but it can also work the other
way in terms of if if they're not feeling valued um another example if an employee has a high degree of connection and purpose but but not a sense of what's going on in the day-to-day they can feel isolated um elements of isolation and not not not feeling like they're in necessarily um a man on an island so to speak so this is this is the The Matrix in the middle we have optimal State and there are other other things that uh we look at which we'll talk about in a couple uh seconds um in terms of creating that optimal State for the for the district and for the for the Department next slide right next slide some of our our findings were um revisiting compensation um people compare what they make and what they are
worth on the market um one in four professionals never or rarely take vacation time and that's um National Data um so it's a matter of rethinking how we how we value compensation the relationship between time and pay um and and encouraging those those alternative mechanisms to minimize burnout the other aspect is Meaningful work uh once again the co p pmic has has altered the way that employees view work introducing work from home in hybrid situations um data says that when employees feel that their work is Meaningful there's a 49% increase in feeling that they are contributing to their work next slide some of the other findings where building trust is extremely important to support and increase happiness and we know that trust can take a long time to build but it can quickly be dissolved
and so the Ops team was really transparent about how they wanted to continue to build trust but build it across uh every other department and also build it with leadership as well and they talked about challenges that could come and sharing things when appropriate with them so that they can continue to value and strengthen what the district needs and what the district wants and assist in main maintaining trust in their department and outside the next theme finding was professional learning and growth and looking at ongoing learning opportunities for retention is there any type of plan in place so they can continue to learn and grow within their position and any special projects or things that they could participate in so they can be motivated to succeed and still grow while they're doing their regular duties
next slide please uh connection sense of connection and there are different elements of of how you know individuals view connection um some is altruism some some is connection um care and empathy there's different different factors that lead into connection but uh we know that happier employees um have a higher degree of workplace happiness when they feel more connected to the work that they do and purpose um the the average employee wants their work to be challenging um they want uh opportunity to to grow based on Merit and purpose is what makes makes people feel like they're part of something that matters something bigger Elevate service and uh Prov provides inspiration that drives the mission next slide please lastly these things were found important it's just ownership 38% of employees become unmotivated when they feel dismissed
and so figuring out what part is Theirs to own and how do they display that ownership in a positive way and how do they get opportunities to take ownership in the work that they're doing so that the results that they deliver mean something to them uh because they know that it's important to the person that they're serving the next finding was participate in decision making and being able to collaborate when appropriate in decision making so they can feel like they're a part of the team so they can feel more valued and more empowered next slide please these are some of the next steps um to continue the work uh departmental feedback sessions uh designing feedback sessions to to Garner insights from employees and providing more appreciation of targeted concerns and Det details ideas detailed ideas
of improvement continuing to work with them amongst themselves and with Consultants to provide a direct action plan and where are the gaps where happiness is where are the gaps where retention is and where are the gaps to in continue to increase those connections uh training and development programs facilitating training programs building on U employee leadership skills teamwork and communication skills and aligning the professional development offerings to employees career aspirations also thinking about sometimes we put people in positions to do well-being that are not equipped or skilled and that can go left and so making sure that we have well-being programs that are done by professionals that are safe for that provide psychological safety by people that are trauma informed so we can really have people create safe spaces at work to have tough conversations but
still feel like they can do their jobs and they're seen and heard and lastly evaluating and adjusting um the ongoing evaluation and review of the successfulness of the implemented strategies and the flexibility to adjust when needed based on the Chang changing organizational needs and that's basically what we do in terms of our paulse pivot and transcend model that we we execute and we also plan on after this board meeting meeting back with the operations team to see what they thought about the data that we have so at this time next slide please are there any questions thank you first off I want to say thank you for the work that you've done appreciate you taking the time this evening to come and share your findings and I want to say I appreciate this that that
space that you guys are in and understanding that postco there has been a new set of priorities for a lot of employees families and students as well so want to share that and so I want to open it up to the board if there are any questions question so what I'm looking at this a lot a lot of this seems like it's and correct me if I'm wrong a lot of it seems like it's research across the country so is is this also what our employees are saying specifically or is this is this really geared to the uh DPS employees this is all this thank you for that question all this data is only from the DPS employees so we added some national stats to add relevancy but the Matrix you see are from the
words that came from the interviews the survey and the questionnaires that we did so everything you see here the findings are what are as a result of the interviews that we specifically um conducted with the operations team so these uh while we were trying to explain what the Matrix was the words within the Matrix came from Collective themes when we spoke directly to the team yeah that and that was my next question that was going to be my next question and um so like when when you guys are doing all of this how are you collecting your data or what what are you using for your uh outcomes well we in terms of the the the interviews um I actually extract all the themes um and it's sort of it's tedious work um in terms
of getting those themes out of the interviews and we do the same thing for the surveys as well um and then the focus groups we we had three focus groups and we actually um had 90 minutes to for each focus group to talk talk about um some of the some of the questions that that they saw on the um the the survey and also discuss more in depth about their interviews as well so basically each person went through a three-step process the first step was 10 to 12 questions individually interviewed privately via Zoom by myself or Dr Eric the Second Step was to conduct to do the survey 25 question survey and then get all the data from that and then the third step was for them to look at the results the survey collectively
so they could have a conversation about what they saw and then our job after that data was to come and put this information together so that it was very specific to the team and personal and represented their their thoughts and Reflections okay yeah that's what I that's what I wanted to find out the the other thing is this is your first year that you guys did this right for for DPS DPS for DPS yeah that's what I meant for DPS and do you guys have a contract for next year or anything like that do we I don't know I don't know I'm asking no no we don't currently have a contract to continue to work for next the only reason I'm asking is because I've done a lot of this so it's like we always
compare one year to the next year to see uh where we stand in all of this so that's why I asked that question okay thank you thank thank you any other questions Dr goodan yes thank you all for the presentation I did I did see that you guys have a lot of qualitative data is there any quantitative data this the 25 question survey was go ahead no it was it was all qualitative what what level of participation did you have from the operations team out of 15 we had 13 participate out of the entire division of operations we did the leadership team that was selected by the director at the time okay so go ahead so with those individuals I'm just ask you simply are they happy are they not happy like if you could
if you could explain it in a way that a lay person or a person who didn't read through all this like what what did you find for us overall we found that they were internally hap they were internally very happy but externally there were challenges that were identified in The Matrix in terms of learning how to work together with the rest of the the rest of the district how to make those connections so that they had impact and how to feel valued within those connections and the other part about happiness that was revealed was that they absolutely love the work that they do but sometimes they feel disconnected because they're not academic mics and so some of the things that they do don't necessarily uh aren't seen first like the lights being on or the
the gym if it's flooding people don't think about the bodies of the people behind it we were actually there to witness some something went wrong with technology and we saw them get together in a way that nobody else would see it's kind of on the opposite side of used to be a principle just fix it but I don't know how much goes into to fix it but sometimes it can get minimized if it's not translated for appreciation so the happiness that exist for the job the happiness existed internally but trying to make that connection has been frustrating okay and would you recommend this process to go beyond just the supervisors Dr Lawrence had at the time mentioned that but he wanted to make sure that we had a good understand of what we were able
to do how it would show up and work but yes we would definitely recommend that and my final question how would you recommend that we as a board utilize this information you want to talk about yeah well I I I think I think um you know we're sort of scratching the tip of the iceberg I think as we collect more more data and it's it really is about creating strategies uh moving forward um and we we've only you know been looking at the um leaders and operations but there's so many levels um that we we could extract this data and really make something meaningful and long lasting um because of course with with this work don't want to be a one-off um creating those those those structures and I also think um wherever it can
be evaluated like I said in the in the findings when necessary information being shared as as appropriate because I know uh some of the communication was well when we find out something that we're responsible for it might look like we don't care but we might not have gotten the information or we might not be clear about how the communication path happened from the from any leadership Department to academics to operations there might be something that fail and sometimes there's misunderstanding which leads to frustration so a lot of times if there could be transparency when appropriate or a policy or process put in place to know how that specifically what is the the direct line of how this information is communicated so it's not uh ambiguity or seen as personal preference so I think developing some
some steps and systems or even revealing if they're already there because there's no assumption that they don't exist but if they're already there maybe revisiting that with new people and old leadership so that they know this is how we communicate this is the expectation this is the result and this is all the people who should have the information thank you any other questions there's nothing else I want to say once again appreciate the work that you do appreciate you coming out this evening thank you for the work you do and thank you for your time your next presentation Dr Lawrence uh my next presentation is transition services and transition to work program and uh I was walking through Belmont one day um and Miss Murphy stopped me and said you got to see this program
transition to work and she took me to miss Lynn's room and the rest is history we did a feature on them after that are they are they have they been featured yet Alex this week gotcha so they'll be featured all over the district um and our weekly um shout outs and so I thought why not have them come up and tell an amazing story about what what I saw while I was there so I'm going to have Miss denmore come up and introduce our our new executive director of OAC good evening I can't little short I just want to introduce myself Michelle denmore happy to be here I'm very excited for you to see the work that several people have put into this program we've really been trying to Beef It Up so to speak
and the work is amazing I'm super excited for this so I'm going to bring Tina up Christine Daniel she goes by Tina and she's got a lot of information to share with you so I'll take take it away Tina I thought you staying here don't go anywhere so here's my problem right she's standing on her tiptoes and I don't need to so I don't know if I is that coming through is that going to work okay so I wanted to share with you this evening what we've been doing as a transition team and I want to stress that this is not a one-person show I'm just the one who drew the Short Straw to speak this evening so um we have for you three programs that that I would like to discuss and share with
you and then hopefully at the end you'll be so excited you'll want to share them with everybody you know so if you would look on your um desk in front of you we have I have a green folder with some materials for you to look at later if this goes too quickly because I know you have a long evening in front of you we have three programs that we serve students who are 18 to 22 but we start transition planning and at the age of 14 so what does that mean so we have students with disabilities who have an individual education plan and when they're 14 we give them an assessment to understand what their preferences interests needs and strengths are and we start to build a program for them with activities that include the
pieces that are of interest to them but the activities include getting them ready for competitive integrated employment education and independent living and so those are the three sections that we look at project search is one of my programs and I can't even say my because it's a again it's a team effort but project search is one of our programs that takes place at ketering Health Network Grand View and there are um when students want to enter this program there are 10 that I have listed up here Rhonda can tell me if there are more but what students do is they spend 10 weeks at three of their choices so if they choose Environmental Services ambulatory Serv surgery and materials distribution they'll spend 10 weeks at each of those they'll work with opportunities for Ohio ones
with disabilities they'll work with Ronda Rhonda raise your hand she's my instructor thank you for being here this evening and they'll rotate those job experiences and at the end they'll work with Ohio ones for opportunities for Ohio ones with disabilities to then get a job outside of the program so it's a one-year program three rotations 10 weeks each all the while receiving job coaching all the while receiving services and support from opportunities for Ohio ones with disabilities that's our first program and what you see then here are some pictures of kids working in different capacities so I included these pictures I didn't I don't have words with them specifically because I just wanted you to be able to see this is the impact we have on kids you you'll see a picture in a minute
of a young lady who went through project search and is now working at the hospital and then mentoring those students who are currently in our program her name is Kelsey this is Michaela she she has been a challenge for us and you can my group will say yes you can see the head is nodding we've met with her several times about her behavior and that's our that's our job is to talk to kids about their behavior what's appropriate at the work site and how to get better and we thought that we were going to lose Michaela but I'm happy to say that she turned a corner and she's still with us and she's going to finished the program and we're excited about that because we were wondering there for a few minutes go ahead please
this is McKenzie again working in different capacities at the hospital go ahead please Kelsey is the one on the left-and side um the taller the taller one with glasses she went through project search and then landed a job at the hospital and that's the point of project search and the next program that we'll talk about that is to spend a year learning those soft skills learning how to take criticism from an employer learning how to listen to directions Implement them and then do a good job and after that one year then to land a position with either the hospital or some other outside organization o works with us to help develop those jobs for those kiddos that's the first one this is the second one we call it ATU but it stands for adult transition
unit our partner are Goodwill Easter seals you can see it takes place in that beautiful building just down the road on South Main Street and our partners include University of Dayton stclair Community College and Gospel Mission Church these students Robin my instructor here has an office in a classroom at Goodwill Industries these students report to Goodwill and every day of the week is it Monday Tuesday Thursday they report to one of those three places so the pictures that are following this you can go go ahead are these students working at these different places again learning those soft skills learning even simple job skills like cleaning vacuuming this young man loved to vacuum go ahead now they're working at Sinclair they could be doing anything from stocking to wiping down tables to um going to the
freezer to get drinks any of those things that that are needed in the cafeteria at Sinclair go ahead please again just more pictures of what the kids are doing because I I wanted to include this many pictures I know it's real busy but I wanted you to see the impact that it has on students if you go one more please this is a young man at the University of Dayton who's participating in serving food and then he and his buddy are folding pizza boxes so we try to get these kids as much experience as possible and working with these Partners we had a young man last year this time last year his name was Adam Adam came to us halim to learn soft skills and he got hired at Sinclair to work there two days
a week and then he was hired again in the fall when school started again this past fall we also have what's the one guy's name with the w Walter who went through this program and now works at Goodwill and then he comes upstairs and works with Robin to Mentor these kiddos so that's option number two go ahead please and then this is them in the classroom with those soft skills that we talked about there's a video here but I but I've been told that I have a time limit so I I left the link there and you can certainly watch it at your leisure it's about a minute and a half long and some of the video is important because what you get to hear is from Sinclair the director of aark services at Sinclair
saying what a great program this is for kids and how glad they are to partner with us go ahead please the same is true for for project search there's a video attached to that one and project search uh you'll again you'll hear people making remarks about how wonderful it is to work with our kiddos and how and what kind of partnership we have with them so that's two this is the third one this is what Dr Lawrence this is what you walked into I believe this is Project Life and again it's really busy because I wanted to show you all the people with whom we partner we partner with everybody who's got logo up there to be able to say can our kids come to your Five Rivers metrop parks can we come to the
Boon shaft and take on some of those menial tasks that teach kids the skills they need to be successful at a job when they're finished so we're really proud that Innovative Plastics has been our first and longest partner they would U initially they sent us plastic parts and we would assemble them and they would come pick them up now we're to a point where we can take kids to Innovative Plastics which is out by the airport report if you're not familiar with that company and they've been our partner for um ever since we started we have the potential future Partners this is what excites everybody in my department I think we just had a meeting and I say we as in shelle and I just had a meeting with Wright Patterson Air Force Base they're
interested in having our kids come out and do work for them we also dayt International Airport specifically American Airlines my brother works for them and he connected me with their person who's in charge of diversity equity and inclusion and we're going to talk with them later on this month as we are tropical smoothie all and be riew Bowl so we have lots of Partners lots of people who want to partner with us who are excited to partner with us and to work with these kids and we're that's just something that we are all smiles about right because this was hard to do this was literally cold call pick up the phone do you want to talk to me some people hung up some people didn't return emails some people just didn't have any desire to
work with us at all and and and I'm I'm kind of a shy person and a and a person who takes things personally I know you guys are all chuckling over there but when somebody hangs up on me I was like oh what happened I I thought I was doing everything right so it forced me to improve my public speaking skills and it forced me to really nail down and put within 30 seconds like the elevator conversation that you'd have what do you guys do in 30 seconds or less and and really um smooth that over so that people understood what we did and how we were with these kids go ahead please Learning Tree Farm oh The Learning Tree Farm we'll get there in just a second yes yes so Innovative Plastics this was
this was the very first room we were in at Belmont this is when they sent us parts and we sent them back and what we were doing was very one dimensional go ahead please very valuable but onedimensional so we figured we thought how could we grow this program so we wrote it we used a couple of um different funding sources through grants to transform what used to be a machine tool shop with all the grime and old machines into this laboratory where kids can learn life skills as well as going out into the community to learn work skills so if you can see there are cabinets there are ADA Compliant um what's the word countertops and there are different stations in this room with whom we we work with these kids on different projects so
there's a washer and a dryer there's a stove there's a stove top and on Fridays Christy raise your hand christe is my instructor christe plans life skills activities for them to use in this lab go ahead there's another picture of it just from a different angle we're very thankful and grateful that we were able to um acquire those funding sources in order to transform this room this is Prime real estate at Belmont we feel very fortunate that we can be there and because it's a big room right and it's a big room with many stations in fact I'll start this ask I'll start with those those are Valentine cards that the students made last year I don't have 10 of them but if you could maybe look at them and pass them on that would
be perfect go ahead with the next slide please we work with our own it department and students will sit down at the table as you can see and they will look at and go through a checklist to check the Chrome books to see what's wrong with them and then they' put them in the according bin so this is um this is one of our it break we call it the break fix lab and then we have Diego the gentleman in blue who is a gen ed student who wanted to volunteer to come down and work with these kids and he was great with them go ahead please this is what you're looking at as far as the micro Enterprise piece they made Valentine's cards last year um we have some we have a button maker
and we make buttons this is what we do to raise funds for ourselves so that we can have little graduation parties at the end of the year and celebrate kids in their accomplishments John the little the guy on the right he graduated last year he was one of my last students when I was a teacher in the district he was one of the last students to graduate um for me so that was a a cheerful moment just for a second go ahead please Christy would do a better job explaining this but this is a series of pictures just this past Christmas where they made Christmas treat ornaments so they're they're cutting out with the dough that they make they're cutting out Christmas tree ornaments when they dried then they painted them and they made their
own ornaments go ahead please this is um Project Life at pking Lanes Jerry up in the right hand corner loved working with the shoes so when you bowl and you have to borrow a pair of shoes Jerry would sanitize them and put them back in the shelf for you Jerry actually did go on to work at Woodman Lanes for a period of time uh when he was finished with us go ahead please this is The Learning Tree Farm they have many projects for us and we're thankful for that it gets us outside breathing fresh air this is one of the projects that the kids were working on along with the help of their job coaches go ahead please I want you to look at the young lady right in the middle in the red shirt
this young lady's name is laia she was non-verbal she is non-verbal we called her the chicken Whisperer her favorite thing to do was to come in and pick up the chickens and then she would try to give them to other people who didn't necessarily want to hold chickens but it was her thing and it made her happy but I want to tell you a little story about her the year before she came to us in Project Life teachers and and Par professionals were walking her down the hall holding her hand and helping her with toiletting by the time she left us she didn't need any of that she could take care of that herself so while I don't have data numbers what I have are anecdotes that say we know these kids are growing because
they participate in these programs we know what's happening and we know what's happening on an individual basis go ahead please I want I want to make sure that I recognize the appropriate people Denette can you wave dte's one of my transition Specialists she helps us with recruiting and getting people signed up for one of our three programs Amy Miller also helps us in that scenario Cathy is ill this evening but she does a lot of our transition assessments for our eighth graders we're excited about that Rhonda you can wave again if you'd like she's my project search person Robin my adult transition coordinator Christie and then I'm Tina I do have you guys ready I do have as part of my presentation I do have Christie and I have Mr Eddie Jordan Ivy III and
his mother um Teresa Crawford who would like to speak to what we've talked about this evening being involved in Project Life and if I'm not mistaken he made his shirt talk about what do what do you do at Project Life at booma we we clean the blue the blue blocks we clean the cases at Woodman bow I do I wipe the bowling balls down and clean shoes at at the lry farm we water the plants and we we and we planted seeds and we picked and we put the pumpkins down and we picked him tell them why you like project because I like project live be be because it helps us get ready [Music] for so it helps Our Lives to get us ready for the future and for the outside world thank you Bor
um I'm a proud parent and I love this program because the enthusiasm every day when he comes home there's a different thing that he likes to share and this week it was like drum roll please Transportation so thank you very much for providing permanent transportation for them and the the skills that they gain life skill skills and work skills the combination developing transitioning it's it's a beautiful program so I just wanted to say that thank you all for your time and thank you so much thank you so we have one last thing for you if you don't mind and if these two could approach they have a button for you and they have a calendar that they made for you in their classroom and um Jordan would like to pass those out to you this
evening again we want to thank you for for your time for listening and if there's anything that you have a question about you're certainly welcome to contact me at any time any of my team members because this is not a oneperson show by any means and I'm happy to answer questions while he's doing that if you have any and if not thank you so much for everything because we couldn't do it without you and without your support um first I want to say thank you thank you um thank you your team thank you thank the um the parents that entrust you all um I want to say thank you for your students I think the biggest thing for me forehanded see if there are any questions was just seeing the glow in your staff's eyes
and the students eyes as they watch the pictures which really show that those are memories being created and I think we talked last week around creating experiences for students and you're doing that and not only creating experiences you're creating lifelines and so I just want to say thank you for the work that you all do because it's it's it's something that isn't talked about enough and that is giving every one of our students the opportunity to live a life with dignity and respect absolutely and that's what that program is about so I really appreciate that and with that I did want to ask if the board had any questions I'll start off with Mr Lacy did you have something Mr Walker so I'll go to Mr Lacy Mr Walker then Dr Goodwin how how many
students are in the program I currently have 14 students in all three programs great that's all I have that's where we need help is getting the word out to say hey maybe you can consider this because we're banking on the future we don't want kids to graduate to the couch right we're banking on the future we're banking on spend another year with us as you said and trust us with your kiddos spend another year with us and let us teach you those skills so that you don't job hop you can actually hang on to the job that you have and you know how to take constructive criticism and you know how to build those skills and relationships with other people Mr Walker thank you um thank you for the presentation um really enjoyed it my
question is how do um students basically get a part of the program I see um I'm not sure is it just at ponents in Belmont or is it like students transferred to those buildings um and how do we as board members advocate for you all for more students in the program so we have three people on staff who help us with those kinds of requests that's where DTE Amy and and Kathy come in they are all assigned buildings including middle schools to help parents answer those questions the only reason Belmont and ponet are are up there is because with with um our Goodwill program and our project search program kids have to be assigned to a building somewhere and it started both of them started at ponet so even though neither one of them is
there now we've always just maintained if your child's going to go into one of these programs they they'll be a student at ponents they don't ever go to ponents they go to either Goodwill on South Main Street or project search at the hospital Belmont just happened to have the space so when we just at the timing just fell together to take out the machine tools that were there and then refurbish that classroom and that was a year and a half long labor of love that took a while and now we're finally there so we look forward to an open house that we're going to have on February 21st is that right okay February 21st yes M rard thank you so much for coming out absolutely oh microphone thank you so much for coming out today
thank you superintendent for bringing this in front of the board and the public um one of the things that I love deeply about Dayton public is we understand students come from so many different um places and they have such a vast array of needs and we meet those needs and this is fantastic for the students whose needs were meeting I recognize some faces good for you in that slideshow and I'm just so grateful to see face that I saw for a couple years in elementary school um I'm grateful for what you're doing the question I have for you um is where can I buy some Valentine's Day cards and some greeting cards I'm serious I'm 100% serious that's actually for Christie I would love to purchase them because I want to support this program okay
they've actually already started that project because they wanted to be ahead of what we hope is a rush yes to get them out to people so we will um definitely ask Pio to help us advertise I would love to be a greeting card influencer for this that would be wonderful we we would we would love your assistance absolutely do I do I leave anything out I think you you nail it everybody's welcome to come and see the program we would love to have you we will be sending you an invitation to come out on the 21st we tried to look at the calendar and choose a day that was you know not quite as busy as others because we know your commitments but if you could come join us you'll you'll get a personal invitation
and we'll have some light or derves and we'll go through even more where we have a little bit more time to show you some videos of what of what the kids are doing but we look forward to an open house we look forward to your attendance if you're able to be there thank you I think Dr Goodwin had a couple of things yes and Dr Bailey yes thank you again as everyone said I appreciate the presentation I haven't worked with this actual program in my actual employment but I've worked with some similar ones and the kids are phenomenal I think in in my experience I had and Mr Walker was there with me too we had some individuals who they cut the grass using the real line mowers mowers better than we could and I
mean the it took me hours to get it down and the kids got it so for individuals who want to be a part of this this Workforce side of opening saying that we would love for your kids to be a part of our youth Workforce areas how could those type of employers connect with you they can certainly call me and we can get that discussion started that's exactly how I've had to go about it in the re reverse order right I've done the cold calling and the cold emailing and saying hey would you be willing to partner with us so anybody can call my office my contact information is um is in there it's on the project life um letter of interest it's it's a colorful piece that's in the back of your folder there
and you're welcome to share that information they can contact me Denette Kathy Amy any of us can help get that process started for them and we'd be lucky to talk to them and what we do is we try to go to to the IEP meeting for every senior in every one of our buildings and invite them and tell them about these programs and Amy Denette and Kathy sit in on every one of those meetings so that everybody has that information with them we start talking with the eth graders when we do their assessments because we want them to have something to look forward to so we start those conversations but now that I have three people we're actually doing a much better job at getting to those meetings and explain to those parents those assessment
results and how to get started and that these programs take place at Belmont and ponents primarily okay we're looking to expand as well if that's of Interest anybody okay we just need the room there a plug right right right I'm going to ask you cuz you know since you drew the short stick and you got to come in front of the board this is the moment what more can we do as a body to support this program I mean this is the moment to speak now or forever hold it until the next time you come up so how can we better support this program which I heard space is one one El right right right right is there more that we can do as a body for you all so space is the big thing
right so I can go to any principal and every principal has been super excited about this but the first thing they say to me is I don't know where to put you so space is the big thing is there a building where the space is available because we'd like to replicate this on both sides of town whether it be north south whether it be East West because we know Belmont is the farthest Southeast building right so kids at metale and kids who live in that quadrant when we look at getting them to Belmont the question becomes one of logistics one of Transportation how do we get you from up here to over here so if we could replicate this in another building so that everybody has more access then then people can decide oh this
one's closer to me and I can actually you know go see my child if I wanted to whereas right now we're just we're confined to that one space but don't take that as complaint because that's not how I mean it at all it just if we have an opportunity to have a space like that doesn't have to be as large as what Belmont is we just got lucky but if it's a classroom size we can certainly make that work so if there's anything as as you're walking through buildings I know you walk through buildings all the time you might say to a principal hey what kind of space do you have and they'll go oh Dr Lawrence I don't have any but that's not entirely true but let's talk about that let's talk about where
that might happen we thought we had an opportunity at dunar and the space had to be used for a health class so now we're looking somewhere else but yes space is the big thing if that's if that's something that you want to take on and and help us with that'd be great okay thank you thank you are there any other questions I can answer for you this evening Mr Bailey I think I don't really have a question I I just want to say thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you um in my regular job one of the things that I have to do is go to uh day programs to serve young men or women that are uh transitioning from 17 198 to uh have guardianship yes and I've been to so
many of those day programs and it's nothing most of them are nothing like this uh we have to find as as DPS we've got to be able to and I've been saying this we've got so much good stuff going on in DPS that needs to be out not just on the DPS website but out in the world uh because so many people look at DPS uh in a negative way but there's so so many things we've got so many brilliant uh uh teachers and and uh workers like you and students like them that this really needs to be um out uh in the community more um we've got a lot of like I said I've gone to so many uh what they call day programs that are not really helping uh these students transition uh
into the world and I looked at this I looked at this earlier today uh while I was sitting at my desk and uh you guys do a phenomenal job so I just want to give you kudal to that thank you thank you it's this whole team that you're looking at over here this whole team for sure thank you for that I will happily partner with anybody you find who might be interested in talking with me about this and how we can help them so if there's any way to get that word out I know um Pio is going to come over and uh do a video for project life we should have that ready um for the open house but we can talk about any of those programs here's what I say people depending on
the level of Independence a student has and this will I'll leave you with this last thought sh come here if your child if the student you're considering needs a full-on hug okay a full-on hug right then project life is going to provide that support where there are going to be eight kids and more than two staff members could be as many as four or five working with those kids providing sometimes even hand overhand assistance for them to learn those skills that we talked about if your child needs a broh hug okay that's your project search right there's a there's a staff member there there's a member from o OD there and they're providing job coaching skills but they're kind of at that you do stage right they're going to back off a little bit they're
going to back off as much as they can and let the students learn those independent skills if your student it already has that level of Independence but still wants the job skills piece then we're going to do the fist bump with our adult transition unit so if people are wondering how how much support would they get I I liken it to one of those three so your ATU is your fist bump project search is your bro hug Project Life is your full-on hug and that's how many that's how much support we're able to offer depending on what the student wants what the parent wants it's an IEP team decision so when we all come together in their seniors and we make that decision that's how what I say to them because parents the first thing
they want to know is what kind of support is there for my child is it going to be the same as when they were in school absolutely might even be more cuz that's how good we are right you told me to you know tell right is there anything else I can answer for you this evening I appreciate your time I know you have a long evening um that's that's what I have and I'm happy to answer questions now or later if you want to reach out and contact me or have a business reach out and contact me well I appreciate you once again and I will ask Dr Lauren um that when that Pio piece rolls out if we can also on our District's social media also just share the information of how to reach
out in those steps of getting our students and our families connected with the program absolutely it' be great president Smith absolutely thank you so much we appreciate you all thank you all very much this is a uh thank Miss Murphy for stopping me where is she there she iser miss Miller Miss Miller Miss Miller she stopped me and that was amazing too I mean just you really thought was somebody else you weren't sure I think it's him okay well was Miss Miller it was me and so much appreciated um I know I had some homework assignments from Miss Lind let me know if I got them all done I think it I got my homework done there it is outstanding and and again um this is a plug for the academic team uh we're the
entire team but the academic team when we say achievement and success for all we me it thanks thank you take care I just like I'd like to take uh just a moment when we uh run our HR agenda and we hire folks uh and this is and Neil I can't bring all the teachers up and all the operations people up but I I would like to start to bring up new administrators that we hired for for the board and the viewing public because you typically we hire them then you don't see them unless maybe there's an issue and so in this case I'd like to bring uh UNIS revik up he's a new preschool director to just say a few things about himself and welcome him to the academic team he's the ninth member of
the team wow look at that the microphone is right there perfect thank you both of you I am unas brevik this is my second stent with DPS I was a teacher leader with preschool under Chief Mack um I spent the last almost two years as a teacher at Fairview Elementary um I am fresh into the office as of a half day on December 20th um preschool has about 40 or so classrooms over 100 staff members and well over 500 students I am ecstatic that the academic action plan includes kindergarten Readiness um I am really excited to make sure we do the work that we are getting our kids on target for the third grade reading level um that reading promise sorry if my my lingo is not there um it was always my goal to
make sure that when we have a day off like tomorrow my students were crying because they love school so much and I want to make make sure that we spread that to all of preschool um I want them to love it and I want it to be academically rigorous so our students are ready and that we have the best program in all of Dayton thanks so much I appreciate you coming to introduce yourself uh uh we just got stronger appreciate you thank you thank you sir moving on in our agenda next is the hearing of bargaining units do we have any bargaining units present that wish to speak greetings Mr Mahoney president Smith vice president Wick uh board members superintendent Lawrence Treasurer brov my name is Neil Mahoney I am the President of the DEA
at this time I would just like to express our excitement to be working with the new board we know we have multiple challenges and we're looking forward to working together collabor ctively and I really believe we've made some positive steps since we've come back in January so with this new board we're really looking forward to this we have that sense of excitement I want to stay as positive as possible because my members are are feeling some of your actions and the one thing that I would like to instill is in my thought process this year my goal has been my decisions are going to be made based on the lens of attracting and retaining teachers to day in public schools I try to factor that in I do wish that you look upon the same
thing in your decisions especially the ones that affect the membership of the DEA on a side note uh Dr Lawrence your visits to the building have been very much appreciative very high feedback uh at our last meeting of the building reps I did let them know that on round two we would like them to ask you the hard questions to take the gloves off and I did assure them that you're walking around music music will be the theme from Rocky so they will have that I know how much you enjoy that and uh at that District leadership team I appreciated that also but we are looking forward I think this is a making of a strong board that can move this District forward and with the teachers and everyone else involved in this we are
definitely looking forward to that thank you thank you Mr Mahoney we appreciate your leadership are there any other bargaining units that wish to speak as I see none we'll move on next Madame treasur do we have anyone registered to speak this evening yes okay as they are getting ready just really quickly like always you have your three minutes please address the board through the president and not individual board members if you have any materials to distribute please hand them to the treasure and it is inappropriate to address any matter involving pending disputes grievances under a labor agreement disciplinary action involving an employee or student ongo going labor negotiations concerns or matters that have already been settled Andor any matter which because of his nature is deemed appropriate to be discussed in executive session the purpose
of public hearing portion of the meeting is for members of the public to express viewpoints and public concerns and with that Madam treasure can you call up our first Speaker this evening Maggie Shimon Maggie okay David ezrati than you David as R 113 Bonner Street I've been coming downtown to talk to people at the Dayton public schools for a long time I remember meeting with Dr Mack I've met with whole bunch of different superintendents whole different bunch of different people I've been to so many meetings and I've been on committees and the like all this time I've never seen any of my fellow people from the advertising Community invest any time at all coming down here now you also know I publish a Blog that's very well read and it's amazing if you look back
you actually did something I told you to do a long time ago you hired Dr Lawrence now he's not perfect in fact he's as far from perfect as I am but things are changing and they're changing very quickly and three of you were at the meeting last week at at uh Westwood and you heard what might have been his best presentation ever and if you didn't and you weren't there there's a video of it online that I didn't get paid paid for that I don't get anything for other than the fact that I know that I'm doing something good for the community and I'm going to tell you when I see a piece of mail come into my house that was sent Every Door Direct Mail expensive and I look at that and I can't
figure out what somebody's trying to do with it I realize you still don't have anybody in this District that understands marketing or Communications you really don't I sent all of you an email today with a link on how to do an RFP to hire a creative Services firm it's not like buying Widgets or buses or anything else you buy and I hope you read it because it was written after the last debacle in 2016 I also sent you a short presentation we had put together because we have done work for this District it won awards and it was good now I realize that many of you have biases and everything else I was glad to see that you are going to go out to bid for your logo and your tagline but you're still going
to spend $50,000 with a group that's overcharging you to redo the work that they did poorly last time and you still don't have the expertise on even how to write the RFP you hire Consultants to do things hire a consultant to tell you how to put together the RFP key hire a consultant that's used to hooking up agencies with clients do something that makes you look smarter because it's really important that how you communicate to your community gets out and it works because we just saw a program i' never heard anything about seemed like most of you it was new to you too and it's amazing and I'm sure there are a whole bunch of people in this city that have kids like that that aren't even coming to school that don't know these programs
exist that won't know about it and I don't think that you have the way to communicate to the public down because if you did you would have been filming Dr Lawrence's Community conversations all of them because that's what it is it's a conversation with the community and that last one was a work of art he finally annunciated why he's here what he's planning on doing where he's taking this district and all of you need to hear it the whole city needs to hear parts of it but I don't have the time to sit there and edit these things down and curate it and make it perfect because I'm not your agency my firm is not doing work for you and we don't even have that opportunity because there are no bid contracts and there are
are RF missing rfps I still ask how can you hire somebody who did the work 5 years ago you can blame whoever was directing it then but you've been paying them all along I'd know more if I'd gotten the public records request I'd asked for but I haven't got any of that information but you keep paying these people and it's still is where it is I know who you've used I don't think they have the skill set you need I know there are firms in this community that could do it some of them don't want to work with you because the RFP process is painful but I would ask that you please consider thinking rethinking this whole thing learning about how you hire marketing Communications firms and spending the time and investing the time to
do it right because when you're doing the kind of changes that were talked about earlier putting the programs together that you were were presented to today the community needs to know and the whole Community isn't on Facebook they're not on Tik Tok they're not at you know they're it's bigger than that and there has never been a really wellone public relations Outreach campaign in this community thank you for letting me go over the time Mr Smith but I think it's really important that we get it right just like it's right who we hired and who we going to hire because I have no doubt that there is no way you can find somebody that's going to do a better job than Dr Lawrence after you watch that video from last week thank you thank you
madam chure anyone else no that concludes the tonight's meeting thank you moving on in the agenda I recommend the approval of the following is establishing board meeting dates for 2024 revision because of a location changed second moved in second any questions seeing none may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr Goodway yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Dr W Mr worker yes Miss rard yes uh Mr Nicholas yes atss thank you moving on our superintendent recommendations thank you president Smith I'd ask let the board allow us to wave the 48 hour rule for a couple of items and in uh Human Resources section A I'd like to ask that we vote um for approval so moved second it's been moved in second any questions seeing none maybe we have a
vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Mr B uh Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes ats's thank you before you go on Dr Lawrence Miss uh Miss kid do we need to refresh for anything for our uh on the agenda yes please so if everyone could make sure they refresh before we get into Marr back to you Dr Lawrence thanks a lot I recommend approval of the following Human Resources content in B so moved been moved do we have a second second it's been moved in second any questions seeing none may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr Goodway yes M Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes a yeses next
recommendation I recommend approval of the following Human Resources separations after July 10th so moved second it's been properly moved and second second do we have any questions seeing now may we have a vote president Smith no Miss Wick no Dr good no Dr Bailey no Mr Lacy no Mr Walker no Miss rard no Mr Nichols no eight no your next recommendation I recommend the following approval of the resolution District support DSS time management specialist in transportation and that's because there we're changing the salary structure because before it was assigned aligned to a position in the treasurer's office but it's not the same position so it should shouldn't be the same salary so we worked with the treasurer's office and the transf senior executive transportation to um to submit this for approval okay I'll kick it
down first to our parliamentarian with us having the 48 hour waiver on human resources do we need to vote on a separate 48 hour waiver man yes because this was not listed on the first 48 hour waiver that is what I wanted to make sure we were all clear on so people would know so the first thing we would do Dr Lawrence would be for you to ask for that I'd like to ask the board consider waving the 48 out R so moved thank you so much second he been moved in second any questions seeing now maybe we have a vote president Smith yes M Miss Wick yes yes uh Dr goodwi yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M rard yes uh Mr nichels yes eight yeses thank you I recommend
the approval of the following time management specialist salary schedule so moved second it's been moved and second in questions I I'm just curious of what what does this role do uh executive director senior executive director um Anderson would you like to come up and speak to what Trina does good evening board members uh this member primarily um focuses on a lower level payroll uh daily task that frees up U myself and the administrators to focus on Transportation so it could be something uh as simple as field trips we have many field trips seven days a week but there's an an awful lot amount of paperwork and documentation that has to be processed uh Cor if you will so that frees up the administrators to focus on other things and also uh she works closely with
other departments payroll uh Human Resources uh on some of the uh driver or pair or mechanic related things and again that provides the leadership team more time to focus on Transportation so it's a lot of documentation paperwork uh that she handles and that provides the uh leaders time to focus on other higher level things I I might I might add board member Walker that the complexities of Transportation are enormous in terms of how we paying we've had a lot of pay not bonuses or attendance bonuses but we had a lot of payroll issues in general until she took over this space so we really don't have transportation payroll issues anymore because she's in that space and she's been incredible it's a different space than the rest of the specialist in the rest of the district
because of the seven days a week people are coming and going um and trying to put together anamation of your regular time versus field trip time versus weekend time and so um that's that's kind of where that role is so how does this road differ from the Transportation Logistics specialist that's paying $23 an hour and this one is paying 31 it's again it's more focus on payroll and as Dr Lawrence just mentioned our contracts for example the driver's contract we have attendance bonuses daily field trips so a little bit more complex than what a logistic specialist would would be a to handle so um you know for example if the holiday we will have field trips this the Vol not only the volume of work but the complexity working on the contract resolving if a
if a field trip should be paid at an hour and a half versus two um that that's the primary difference between the the position you mentioned in the payroll the team lead um so my my last comment is um I can appreciate the role I I think my issue comes that we have other staff that do other roles as well that have stayed at the same pay schedule of $21 for the last three years where their staff are their supervising staff that are making higher than them um so I would take that in consideration but I welcome it but I will be voting no on it hey thank thank you for your feedback um we there's another group there the transportation DSS is that we think to your point uh we think that's a salary
adjustment to because they're DSS's and they do things differently than the academic folks or folks in other spaces of the organization based on the nature what happens at Transportation so I think to your question we need to we need to evaluate all of that and um and that that actually was a request by Dr goodmon before we have a committee that's um dedicated to that we put that together in the first Board review session um when Miss Wick G was leading that so we have a team of people that's working on that whole process Dr goodan is this a new position yes was it posted yes ma'am how many applicants I'm sorry how many applicants for we had three it was posted previously under another name but we had three applicants including Miss White okay
so the one that we are approving today that salary schedule is that one being posted again or are we just moving someone into it as my uh we were going to move someone into it does it I think you speak to that I think it it would have to be posted we do have a policy that says if there's an opening that you have to apply and go through those steps for it so I I know we're just doing the this is just for the salary scale today correct yeah we had three inter we did interview three candidates for the position so hey Dr K let me check this is for the salary SC but is she is is is um is she on the HR agenda to be placed in that role or is
this just a salary schedule this is just the position of the salary schedule okay all right good any other questions thank you Mr Anderson appreciate you sir any questions on the motion on the floor seeing none may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Weck yes Dr goodwi yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes uh Mr Walker no M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes seven yeses one no thank you next recommendation Dr Lawrence I recommend approval of the following contracts in section g so moved second it's been moved in second do we have any questions Dr goodan I like to pull senator until after exec session we voted on after exec session like to just speak to the attorneys on it that is fine Mr Walker can we uh vote on catapult separately that
is fine as well any other questions seeing none first we will vote on radius design work Madam uh treasur voting on radius design works first as Mr Walker wants to vote on catapult creative Collective SE separately and then the sensal contract we will be pulling until after executive session maybe we have a vote okay president Smith yes Miss Wick yes uh Dr goodwine yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr uh yes Walker Miss reinard yes and Mr nichels yes eight yeses thank you next we will be voting on the Catapult creative contract any questions seeing now may we have a vote okay president Smith yes Miss Weck yes Dr goodwine yes Mr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes um Mr Walker no and Mr Nicholas no left Miss Riner Miss Riner Miss reard yes okay
okay two NOS uh six yeses to NOS next recommendation I Rec appr I recommend approval of the following out of country field trip for Styer School for the Arts so moved second it's been moved and second do we have any questions Dr good one on these trips how many about how many students are like go on these trips in the past I don't have that data I have to get with Liz whips and a is it like less than 20 I'm not sure okay in the event that the the trip is like canceled or anything do we have a process to refund individuals in place we just had that happen board member Smith president Smith asked about that and um I'll send the email that Miss duy sent to us Chief Dy sent to us
an exhaustive um space where the teacher tried um at Great Lengths to put parents and families in a position where this didn't happen and most of the parents agreed and participate and a few didn't so we do from that situation do we now have a process in the event that if they couldn't go not not because I mean it was on the district's fault that we could refund those individuals if requested that's kind of just my question the process is the teacher leader instructor art art Adent whomever's leading the trip they've asked the parents to purchase insurance and some agreed and some did those the few that didn't they they were not able to be refunded so we we' suggest that they take the the lead of the individuals who are running the trip okay
do we put any money into this trip ourselves that's a no okay any other questions seeing now maybe we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reinard yes and Mr Nichols yes ats's next recommendation I recommend approval of the following agreement opy Local 191 otpt and MH so moved second it's been moved and second do we have have any questions seeing none maybe we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Mr uh Dr Bailey yes uh Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes eight yes s your next recommendation please Dr Lawrence I recommend approval the following agreement local 7even 66 the interpreters so moved second I'll second that has been
moved and properly second do we have any questions seeing none maybe we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Weck yes Dr goodwi yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes Miss reard yes Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses that concludes your recommendations Dr Lawrence president Smith it does appreciate you sir moving right along Madame treasure your first recommendation please ma'am I recommended the approval of temporary Advance as a uh reviewed last week so moved I'll second that it's been moved and properly second do we have any questions seeing none may we have a vote please president Smith yes yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Dr walk Mr Walker yes Miss reard yes and M Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses your next recommendation please ma'am I recommend
the approval of uh the monthly financials for December as uh reviewed by the finance committee on Thursday so moved second it's been moving second do we have any questions seeing none may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes uh Mr Walker yes M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes a eight yeses your next recommendation ma'am I recommend the approval of the minutes for December uh 4 December 12 December 18 and December 12th so moved second it's been moved properly second by Dr goodwan do we have any questions don't think we do on this one may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr good Wayne yes Mr uh Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reinard yes Mr
Nicholas yes atss next recommendation I recommend the uh the approval of the following donations as reviewed last week week thank you don't notice some moved to be moved do we have a second we have a second any questions I see none I do want to say thank you to those that donated I want to give a special shout out to Dr Ken Hayes he stood on business and said he was going to donate those funds and he donated that and so like to always lift up people who stand on business the way he did like that so appreciate you sir as always I want to thank anyone that donates to our district whether it be monetarily time or any of the like seeing nothing else may we have a vote please Madam treasure president Smith
yes Miss Wick yes Dr good Wayne yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes uh Mr Walker yes M reard yes uh and Mr Nicholas yes 8 TS your next recommendation Madam treasure I recommend the approval of the following purchase purchase requisitions as reviewed last week second I'll give this one to miss Wick I'll give the second to Dr goodan she got you there Mr Lacy my fault Mr Lacy any questions yes can I um pulled the Fram equipment for the curtains one still not comfortable with that one do you want to pull it off for a discussion or do you want to yes an executive session to discuss that is all good we will do that anything else from anybody on purchase requisitions uh for clarity I'll ask um legal if that's actually discussion matter
in the executive session or parliamentarian I going tell you can't discuss that one not the way you said it then I would just pull it the vote on separately that's deal with at my I mean you can you can ask for it to be tabled to the next meeting but you just need someone to go if you don't want us to vote on it today I mean we we can just discuss it too to be totally honest even if we vote on I'm still voting no so it's up to you all on how you want to do it if you want to vote your thing right now whatever you want to do is that do you want to have a disc you want to have a discussion on it or do I mean we we
can I just feel like curtain is not needed and you don't have a discussion on this so after this motion is over then we'll go to that so yeah we can have a discussion on it anybody else want to say anything about the curtains not yet cuz we in a motion oh we already had a second did do we have a second yes yeah we had the second we can still then we can talk about the motion well no he asked the pull that for a different conversation ah so you want to do the conversation now no we can pull it on still to vote on motion we can vote on this first we can vote on the other ones it's already been pulled for a separate vote it's already a separate vote so I
will hold the discussion to sear sear vot yes then we will discuss that are there any other questions about this motion now you got a lot going on right now man do we have any other questions all right nothing else on any other person no one is Dar jumping out there oh look at y'all y'all must have somewhere to be tonight dude Maybe have a vote okay president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr good Wayne yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M rard yes and Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses all right now we're about to throw the ball back in Mr Walker's Court would you like to have a vote on this one Mr Walker yes I would okay now would you like to have a discussion Mr Walker yes I
would would you like to start the discussion Mr absolutely all right go ahead Mr walker uh based upon even last week's conversation and further researching this I I don't feel like it's a good investment I feel like um the staff probably there just need further training on pulling the bleachers in uh to accommodate the the building um as well as with the safety concerns of them being out all day um so I'm I'm fine with voting on it but I will be voting no on it no you must have talked to Mr caty too didn't you Mr Walker her and other administrators in the same I like that Mr Walker got out there any other conversation about yes so I saw the curtains at third good and although they do block they are hanging off
so they don't seem like the soundest investment because even those ones are kind of on and kind of off where it's boats holding them into our seat so I do see what our team is trying to do by blocking that piece off but I don't know necessarily if they have found a permanent solution for it yet but I mean they were up but they were just hanging so and I did I shot shot it over to our business manager to see like maybe they should have used garments or something like I don't know I don't know what type of strength is needed to keep them on there but some of the ones I saw at another location aren't sturdily fixed so that's what we are getting it is a temporary solution yeah I saw that
um same issue at uh another school over third gr Marshall I did have a question the proposed material for this at Belmont would that be the same as what we have at third gr business manager can you come on up good evening the proposed curtain for Belmont is going to be different from the one at thir good because the one at thir good was original to the building so it's roughly about 15 years old uh and those of you who may have been around during that time uh the building projects were built u based on uh low Bid And So at the time what was purchased would have been the absolute lowest bid the general contractor or the bleacher contractor would have provided to us at the time uh here we are 15 years later
uh technology is better um improvements have been made so these are scheduled to be better uh than what is there uh Dr Goodwin from your requests we did have uh carpentry our blue chair guy go over and uh he was working on those today to make some repairs uh to make it more more secure what what does it fix with the new ones coming in are they similar to how over there was just like a boat holding it together through the fabric so it'll be it'll be different I'm not sure exactly what items will be used uh specifically for the Belmont uh we'd be happy to request that the contractor provide us samples uh there are Al also other products that are out there uh should we decide to explore the options I've seen schools
that have wood uh that are bolted to the bleachers um obviously we'd have to leave the bleachers in one position the entire time in order to have that solution uh so the curtain gives us an option to be able to extend and retract the bleachers for whatever event we have going on but if if if we want to get a sample of the um the the thickness of the vinyl be happy to to provide that maybe even a sample of uh how it's attached to the bleachers so I've got a question so because this is last week I I was trying to understand how are you're stopping how are curtains going to stop the uh students from getting back there but I said the same thing to myself last week why can't they just retract
the the uh bleachers instead of Le leaving them out all the time so it it goes into the use of the building if maybe early in the day they have it out for an assembly and there might be a game later on that night they may decide to leave them out all day uh it it it just it just depends there's a lot of variables that go into whether or not to have the bleachers in or out and it's not any one person that's responsible for pulling the bleachers in and out May I add Madam bill business manager I think also one thing that I did from talking to the principal there I think one of the reasons at the time you can correct me if I'm wrong was that there were other issues with
the bleachers that were being worked on there was a gap or something in between a piece of the bleachers and some things that they were working on which is why they had them out as well at the time um but that was also one of the things that I did get from talking to the principal I lean more towards holding off until we can get more of an understanding of the options and then I always look at when I have the conversations I think the the school administration was leaning towards just figuring out how do we train each other how to keep them closed how do we kind of monitor those things so I think I wouldn't want to do something that also creates a clash between our operations and our building staff there but
I think there's a good solution to be had um definitely would lean against keeping them out the whole time because that really takes away the space and the ability to do some of the things that we can do in some of these spaces but that is where I'm leaning um Dr goodwan yeah I would say the opposite of even talking to the administrators that they're good during the game the curtains do keep like kids out of it but I mean if it's a solution that works I'm all for it but I just want to make sure that you guys know it's going to work a little bit better than what we've had in the past itself so it's like that different like during the games when people are out and their kids in the stands
the kids go under I've seen that cuz they move they they not watching the game that's not their life right now and if they can get away they can so I see that perspective of it of the safety piece of it preventing cuz usually any type of barrier will stop a young child from exploring and climbing under there so we can explore yeah academic team we're willing to take a step back and work with operations to uh do some more exploratory work Mr Lacy down there has something Mr Lacy I was just going to apologize for buying cheap curtains 15 years ago always you were you on the finance committee back then God so Mr Lacy right there anything else for our for Madam business manager while we have her up thank you Madame business
manager and appreciate you any other questions conversations around the motion there is no motion on the floor we just started a discussion just so you I thought he wanted he wanted to vote on it separate yeah it was to vote on he pulled it to vote separately so now he would if he didn't want to what would you want to do sir I want to vote on it separately no we we already voted on everything else it's just this exactly so it's either we vote or I would I would pull it and table it yeah we we I would say yeah let's if Mr Walker is open to tabling the discussion would you be open to that sir sure I I'll I'll be open to that yeah because if you I'll read if you vote
it down you have to wait till next school year to come back up but if we table it and you put a date on so I'll I'll table it ask to table it to next next month's meeting is there a second to table it now I will second that with Mr Walker there you go and next month's business or review session uh Miss P which one works better for you review session or business meeting uh business okay so next month's business meeting any questions on the motion it's been moved in second see n may we have a vote to table president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwine yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes M reard yes Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses let's get the train back going on track your
next resolution I mean recommendation Madam treasur I recommend the approval of the following to and and now as reviewed last week okay I'll entertain a motion so move second moving second any questions seeing n may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr Goodway yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes doc Mr Walker yes Miss reinard yes and Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses thank you does this include your recommendations Madam treasur yes ah thank you and appreciate the work you do Madam treasure thank you next first I will go to reopt our board member handbook I'll entertain a motion so move second been moved in second do we have any questions yes ma'am Mr I would request that we have some more time to look at this and provide input um there
were some uh thoughts that I had when we were looking doing this last year and I would like to have some more time to compare the old board Man member manual um and give every board member an opportunity to to do the same that seems fair are you open to motion yes I like to put a date on it though CU that is what five of us have had this for six months and two have had it for like a month so uh can everybody review this by the next business meeting does that work for everybody and yeah just shoot it shoot it I mean Sharice is the drafter if you guys didn't know shice actually put our handbook together so that's the one so I will take back my motion but then I will
motion to table until the business meeting okay I will second that any questions if we could all please make sure we go through and reach out to miss kid and I just want to also lift up the work that Miss kid does for our our board and our district so I would like that we respect her in that work may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr goodwi yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes Miss reard yes Mr Nicholas yes 8s thank you me see I forgot Mr Nichols last week Mr Nichols you have anything for new business today sir I do not what on Miss Nick making me look bad Smalls all right next I will come back down to Madam treasure yeah um as you know
in um phisical year 2021 uh we joined the Ed Choice uh litigation and we have been working with the the OD and the lawyers to give them uh records and information how it affects public schools for no for taking our funds so uh last week on U Thursday I was deposit and testified for an hour and a half and uh it was a good question and answers that's it they didn't press you too much did they M Tre oh yes they did pressure me than got but they did say I did good appreciate you ma'am go down to miss rard I see we have a resolution as well we do and I would like to read this and put it forward for consideration um for the board to vote on it this is a resolution
in opposition to House Bill 68 um to give uh board members in the audience context um house Bill 68 was passed by the state legislature and vetoed by the governor and then last week the um House of Representatives met again and voted to override The veto and it will be sent to the senate for the same um this bill removes access to U very much needed Medical Care and gender affirming care for Trans minors um of which we have some um trans miners in our um School population this will affect our student body um as well as um all the kids within Dayton and um all across the state um a resolution in opposition to House Bill 68 whereas House Bill 68 has been passed through the Ohio legislature vetoed by governor dwine and the
Ohio House of Representatives has voted to override Governor dwin veto whereas House Bill 68 known as saving adolescence from experimentation act would ban gender affirming healthc care for minors and would prohibit mental health professionals from treating any gender related conditions without seeking parental consent whereas mental health professionals including School psych psychologists and social workers would be required to violate student privacy by reporting to both the students parent and the Department of Health the number of individuals that they've treated for gender related conditions whereas outing lgbtq plus students in this way places students in extremely stressful and potentially dangerous situations whereas lgbtq plus students already face increased rates of anxiety depression and suicide forcing medical professionals to out these students compromises student saf and has a detrimental effect on their mental and physical health whereas hp68
places harmful barriers for students seeking mental health supports while over 80% of lgbtq plus youth want Mental Health Care 60% are not able to get it concerns regarding the need to obtain parent permission or the fear of being added are significant causes of lgbtq plus youth being unable to receive proper care whereas the National Association of school psychologists principles for professional ethic standard um i. 2.6 provide that school psychologists must respect the right of privacy of students with regard to their sexual orientation gender identity or transgender status and school psychologist should not share that information with anyone without the students's permission House Bill 68 would therefore require School psychologists to breach their ethical VI obligations whereas School psychologists would be penalized if they abide by E their ethical obligations House Bill 68 would impose harsh
harsh penalties and subject mental health professionals to possible discipline or civil actions for violations the this threat of discipline will discourage careers in school psychology and related fields of healthare whereas House Bill 68 is contrary to generally accepted medical guidance both the American Medical Association and the American Academy of pediatric support gender affirming care whereas the Board of Education of the Dayton City School District the board supports its lgbtq students and its Mental Health Providers and is opposed to any legislation preventing students from accessing necess Neary supports now therefore be it resolved by the Board of Education of the Dayton City School District that the board formally opposes and rejects House Bill 68 of the 135th general assembly and any other legislation that devalues lgbtq plus students and pro promotes fear intolerance and hate the
board will continue to follow its ethical obligation to provide mental health support to all of its students the board will support its mental health professionals and seeks to remove any barriers that may exist for its students to access Quality Health Care the treasurer is authorized to deliver or cause to be delivered a certified copy of this resolution to community leaders to members of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate and to the office of Governor Mike dwine this resolution shall be in full force and effect from and immediately after its adoption and shall supersede any prior resolution or act of this board which may be inconsistent with the provisions of this resolution um and I would like to thank um board member uh wick for um discussing this with me and um uh
asking that I um put this resolution in front of the board I'm appreciative of that um Dayton public is a district for everybody we saw this earlier today um with the different student supports that we have um whether or not you agree with um the existence of trans people trans people exist um trans kids exist trans people have existed for a very very very long time um we want everybody in Dayton public to know that they are welcomed that that we will provide a an affirming um nurturing environment for them whether they are students whether they are staff um it means a great deal to me to put this vote in front of the board um I know many trans kids in this District um one of them is my child um and I am
deeply concerned about the way that our legislature in the State House is diving into culture wars that is harmful harmful for people all across the state and for minors who deserve to be protected and loved with that I would move that we adopt this resolution in opposition to House Bill 68 second the motion any questions I have one question completely agree good one yeah one question completely agree with this uh number two I have a question on number two for our legal team just kind of on some of yeah can we can we votee on it after Z so I can just ask that one question to them just to see what we would be holding to on number two at the now there be resolve section sure thank you um and then I have
a couple of items of um other business to bring to the attention of the board um the first is that uh the Ohio House of Representatives has an amazing new advocate for public education in their ranks um representative Burl Pele Antonio from ganna Jefferson was sworn in to replace Mary lightbody representative light body from District 4 last week I have worked with her for years in the um public education advocacy space she um stepped down from her position as a board member of ganna Jefferson I deeply respect the work that she's done for years um and I am so excited for her work in the House of Representatives and frankly we are all very lucky that we have a a wonderful advocate for public education in the House of Representatives um there are a few
legislative updates that I have first of all House Bill 68 um I will update the board um if and when that comes in front of the senate for um a vote to override The veto um there are a couple other um bills that are um up for consideration for the floor um there is a uh substitute version of House Bill 183 which is regarding Single Sex bathroom access and primary and secondary schools and institutions of higher education um changes in the substitute Bill include prohibiting schools and universities from constructing or maintaining a multi-use multi-gender restroom creating exemptions to allow custodial and emergency workers people with disabilities and their caregivers and parents with children younger than 10 to enter facilities designed for the opposite sex clarifying that colleges and universities are not in violation of the
legislation unless they knowingly permit individuals to use facilit facilities designated for the opposite sex um and align the measures definition for biological SE sex to the definition used in House Bill 68 again this is legislation that is unnecessary and harmful um there is no reason um there's the intent for this leg legislation is again purely to harmm those affected by this bill um there is some um committee uh work around some property tax review bills um but I will call your attention to the State Board of Education they unanimously passed a resolution to oppose moving the State Board of Education from their offices co-located in Downtown Columbus with the Department of Education and Workforce to the campus of the Department of Agriculture and Reynoldsburg um the board side of the state's Constitution which directs that
the board have its headquarters in the seat of the state government um and after they pass the resolution the State Board of Education accepted a motion to invite the director of the Department of administrative services to their meeting to explain the reasoning behind the proposed move thank you for the osba on those legislative updates I'm grateful that I could bring that attention to the board there is a new um osba president Sally green um from tusky Valley she is a friend of mine um she deeply deeply loves um her district and she is so excited to serve the state as president of the Ohio School Board assist Association she's going to do a fantastic job and um I thank her for her service um and beyond that I don't believe that I have anything else
um except stay warm it's very cold outside thank you and just for those that are watching Dr goodwi asked that we would hold off on the vote on the motion that was on the floor so we will hold that until after executive session correct Dr good yes now with that can I go over to this side of the Des to my right Dr Bailey actually don't have don't actually have anything today thank you not today I know I'm a Baptist preacher but I don't have anything to do can we go over to Mr Walker now um thank you I I did want to clarify last week it was um Horseman not River's Edge uh that I had attended with the kid that was going to dunk on me so did want to clarify that uh
and secondly um I did go out today to um third Good Marshall Belmont and ponet for PD thank you to Chief sheii um who sent those over I did have a question though um I did not see principles so were they in separate profession developments and divers okay um and I I do want to um say that I did um enjoy uh Mr Anderson's um PD over at thur Marshall as well as the others um his I think was a little bit different because it was Transportation um and things like that uh one of the feedbacks that I did hear from staff is that um hopefully the next one we can provide them some meal options or snacks and refreshments cuz I think they was going to go neck and neck with the lady who
was holding the snacks so that that was a piece of there um secondly let's see oh um Chief Jones if you could um still wanted to see the parent Mentor job description um as well uh if that ever comes back up but still want to be mindful of that role and other than that um enjoy your um well-deserved snow day tomorrow um but I know work will be waiting for students come Thursday when they return than thank you sir Dr goodwi thank you first I want to give a shout out to my sori it's founders day today so you know we're trying to wrap this up and get on with our celebration Z 5 b s Incorporated thank you very much uh second I do want to just take a moment to really uplift the
family of David LEL who was a very big impact individual at the city of Dayton he was one of the individuals that led the charge and fight to make sure minority businesses were seen and had Fair opportunities in every space he recently passed away Friday and his Services was today and he is just one of the few Legends we had left that are is now gone beyond us so again shout out to all the work he did I know his family is going through a time right now but he will definitely not be forgotten for just a many even up until his last days he still continued to fight on for rights and he's done it for over 50 plus years over there at the HRC in the minority business center next I want to
the MLK day was yesterday several of us was out at the March and we were bundled up and we were moving we were the best speed Walkers that the city has seen I think we got that March done in less than 20 minutes from The Drew Center downtown cuz you got to keep moving to stay warm I W I will say I was a little disappointed that as a district we didn't have much going on I did definitely missing Miss Worley's day of giving that I've seen in the past happen but I am happy to see that so many of us did at least show up to that I do hope in the future when we get to this time next year that if if we have a table I would much rather sit with
more students than I will with the people to the left of me and we can just intermingle in because there was a great speaker yesterday and and I think our our students like students like Mr Nicholls missed the opportunity to hear from a person that was a part of the board that that put on the first March in the city of day and and I think that those type of individuals we are seeing less and less of them as the days as the years goes on and we've had our chance at it and we get all these opportunities but I would much rather pass my seat to someone else who's never seen that type or had that type of interaction so I do hope we can do that moving forward I am going to request
Dr Lawrence that we have a study table presentation from the schools as we are now at the end of the second We've Ended the second quarter and we just need to know what's going on in those those areas and if we could get those going starting at the next meetings to start having really what's going on in those areas if the investment is still if it's even yielding some fruit cuz I believe now we will be getting our second year of data on what we have going on in that piece in addition to that this is January so I also do want to make the request that our youth Works mou that we get that going because I think last year we did finally get it started shout out to Dr laen for getting that
going in his former role but we want to get more of our students working in these programs and if we have any opportunities in our district I want to make sure that we take care of them and that we are here and especially hearing some of the programs that are coming that Miss sheii and Miss Miner have talked about with those freshmen coming in those freshmen are at working ages and if they can be four hours with us doing a job and then they're doing school stuff I think we have a better chance of hitting them and academically if we got them some type of compensation and the county is putting that in so we are in that beginning season I want to see that get going right now I will say I did get
a couple families that reached out about the school closings and I believe board former board member Samson asked last time what the number was for when we know was too cold is the number seven now is that what we going with for our number when it gets too cold 7 degrees or lower or is it still Case by case there was a range and it's Case by case there's a range the windshield tomorrow morning will feel like minus5 so um yeah it's Case by case so the answer to that one is still it is Case by case hopefully a day is worth of notice gave individuals some type of time to make arrangements who don't have child care we I mean no matter what you do half of the people are going to be happy
and the other half are going to be upset so I mean you could have found out at 6 a.m. you found out at 4 the day before other than that I did get to go board member or vice president wickwood with me too with Charity Adams to their incentive to skating and I put on a pair of skates and I was all excited but it was the whole school there who improved their math scores and it was a lot of amateurs out there and I took those skates right back off and I'm like this is not my day the Lord did not bless me in a way to be with the amateurs I mean the rink was like you guys share the uh little uh I don't know what they called but the tubes to
help you skate but board member Wick was out there just floating and I'm like her healthc care must be set up way different than mine yeah so shout out to her for being uh way more trusting with our young lives I walked and did the Hokey pokei and walked around with individuals and that was fine for me that is all I have thank you thank you Dr goodwan always great to hear about your escapades throughout the district thought you could be a better skater than that though first off I'm great no that's cool it was just a lot of people falling and you can't jump over that many individuals at once that's cool Mr Lacy the the number question was my question although although Samson had several questions on the same topic let me correct
the record board member Lacy asked what the number was so there you go still I do yeah I do understand it has to be Case by case um um last Thursday um We the finance committee met and went over the finances and and Mr Walker was there and he failed to mention that was one of the highlights of this last week but it's actually one of my favorite committees yes just wanted to put that out there for the record um and and everything was in good order and um I'm not trying to uh but I'm not trying to Blindside people but that when we were looking at our our schedule of of meetings I it brought to mind our calendar for 24 2 and I couldn't find it did we pass the calendar for 2425
we did there was not a 2-year calendar process and typically in districts there is a two-year calendar process you don't do it yearby year so I wrote about that in my board of education bi-weekly memo to say that's one of the things that's urgent to me to get a two-year calendar instead of a one-year okay and then we have we're going to have lots of participation and feedback so we look forward to um submitting that as a recommendation to you all okay for two years because yeah people are making plans for the summer and they we want them around we want them back home and time to go to school and and that's all I have thank you thank you Mr Lacy before I go to miss Wick I was informed by Dr Bailey that
we have not had benediction so he still has a chance to hop in and say some words and he chose to do so actually she's already said it it was just about the MLK dinner uh I would like to see more students there uh if we're not going to attend at least call one of the students to come or add a table uh for students to be there we'll add a table next year for student Senate and then we'll also put that out for um some other senates we have a committee we'll talk about the criteria for the other kids but yeah I I would love to seen them there in fact they can have my ticket and any even some of our upand cominging staff leaders I think would be really benefit from that
that process of being in that room cuz there were there was a lot of people outside of us that make decisions about things that happen here that those individuals should see those individuals those electeds those community members and those community members and elected should see those individuals in our district that they make all these decisions about but never see a face or name Denise did we send that M scum do we send that invitation to all of ller or just leadership I cannot remember then then leaders ship uh duly noted Dr goodwi will take it down the next level of leadership so what I'm hearing is none of y'all over there want to come sit with us all right and can I Dr Gail don't want to sit with us Dr Gail don't want to
sit with us can I add as well that we include students that may not be at the GPA of those other students as well that may be offer that opportunity to be a part of things that take place m Miss Wick thank you thanks everybody for coming out tonight um I don't have a whole lot um I have been um charged with giving you the update from the alma group I serve on the committee with board member reinard and board member um Lacy right now um upcoming key dates and actions um this week each finalist will complete a video introduction to the community that will be shared publicly starting the week of January 22nd panel n minations will be finalized announced the week of 1:15 the team met to finalize the selections panelist selected will
be expected to attend and participate in two trainings during the week of January 22nd and January 29th all final interviews are scheduled for Monday February 5th and Tuesday February 6th finalists will be on site for two days engaging with staff the community and the board the final board interview will be the afternoon of Tuesday February 6th the board's final debrief and final selection will be sometime in February shortly after those final interviews have been uh completed specific details with times and locations of interviews will be shared with panelist members in the coming week um once interview schedule has been finalized um once the interview schedule has been finalized um Alma is excited for the Dayton Community to uh get to see these candidates and we're they're looking forward to learning more so uh if any
of our community who have been um applied for these panelist have any questions uh please feel free to um reach out but you will be contacted directly by the alma group um I think I haven't missed anything there board member Riner do you think I've covered everything there thank you um uh my personal update is roller skating was really fun anytime I have the opportunity to go out and be with the kids in the Community it's really the most enriching rewarding experience I get in this work um even though yeah they were going all sorts of different directions so um but it really was fun um thank you to uh board member Joselyn reinard for uh your work in uh Drafting and creating this beautiful resolution I appreciate your collaboration there working with me thank
you and uh thank you to the entire board I think that again we're going to have a great board this year and looking forward to the work thank you Dr Lawrence yeah I'd like to start off by uh thanking Jason Enix um he's the superintendent of HRA Heights Public Schools we uh brought a Shashi on after July 10th and he did not have to release her from her contract uh she is nothing short of spectacular uh she uh he she and her team put on this professional development which offered choice to the entire District and as I travel around the district I I heard nothing but really positive comments um and so I really appreciate Jason uh allowing you to get out of your contract and come back home and help us do what we
do uh Shelley denmore um I just want to say kudos to you um as the new executive director of OAC um you're amazing when I go down and meet with you on Friday sometimes I have to stand in line ladies and gentlemen there are people lined up waiting for her and she really is doing a great job of working through one of our core guiding principles of the 5c's which is culture you can really see the culture down there um changing rapidly uh since you've gotten an opportunity to take control of that space and I appreciate you and all the work that you do and you're an amazing addition to the academic team because when we say all uh as Lisa might say we mean all kids and that means students who in oec so
we appreciate you uh Unice brevi thanks for joining the team operations thanks for this morning Joe and Alex thanks for taking on my calls over the weekend I am sorry to bother you but I appreciate you guys pick right up no matter what time it is and um I just want to say that Tommy I um do you need to ride home uh yes well I want to let the board know that I'm going to have to leave I cannot do executive session because I have to take Tommy [Laughter] home thank you all right all right um wait for Dr goodan because we also have another vote on there but also I will say staff I tried I was trying to get you 7:30 I was was trying to get out here at 7:30 I'm
getting there we gonna get there get there but we do have in our new business we have board member travel and expense um on here I will say that I do hope we get the handbook make sure we get that covered make sure you're watching some of those make sure you do note in the handbook and and talking to miss that while we look at these things and I love for folks to get out and I want everybody to develop we do have a budget on these things and I do want to be fair to everyone on the board who desires to do things so one of the things that is in our handbook is uh a note that when there is certain travel certain conferences those who are on those committees get that first
preference so that also means that those on those committees make sure you're being diligent and watching for these things and understanding that if you aren't going to that there may be other board members who desire to also get out and ab about and learn and bring things back to our board but with that I do want to that to be said that there are seven of us and that budget that we have is Miss kid am I correct $2 per student corre $2 per student and that goes to everything that we do as a board so wanting to be mindful of that as we move forward so I will entertain a motion to accept our board member travel and expense so moved has been moved did you say oh Dr Bailey says second it's been
moving second any discussion seeing none may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr good Wayne yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes Miss rard yes and Mr Nicholas yes eight yeses thank you thank you and so please be on the lookout if you would like you can ask Miss kid for our new board members and those who usually don't go on things you can ask Miss kid you can ask um other board members you can get out there and research but we definitely want to make sure the work we're doing and as boards we're being responsible to the district as we go out and making sure that what we're doing is bringing something back to the board and we're also allowing all our board members to share in
those experience for me very quickly we did have MLK day and it is one of my K my favorite days of the year just because I like to be able to reflect on some of these things and I would just ask that as we move forward that we kind of make sure that we put these days in those spaces you know very easy to put up a cool MLK quote or you know to talk about how much we need peace in the world and this and that but also I think back too and a lot of people don't think about this you know MLK has beloved and all of these things but people forget he was not liked at the time that he died his approval rating was past your basement he was not a
person that people in this country would look at as a hero so understanding that the work we do now if we're not worried about plating people if we're not worried about making people our friends because of the work making sure we're doing things for the good of it then that Legacy lasts because Dr King wasn't doing work to make people happy he wasn't doing work to make friends he wasn't doing work to make political statements Dr King when he died was out working to talk and get better rights and better pay for sanitation work and we don't talk about that piece we talk about the race piece and these things Dr King was talking about human rights he was talking about Equity he was talking about the fact that things were just wrong in this
country and we always do this thing where we look back and we talk about this old peaceful person and we don't realize that at that time he was doing work that people just did not want him to do and there were a lot of people like that there were a lot of people like Dr King there were the mear Evers the Malcolm X's of the world the B rustin's of the world the the The Fanny L hamers of the world that often get put on the back burner because of something that I like to call this superum myth we look at this superhuman myth as these people were just individuals but they weren't Martin Luther King had teams of people they studied they worked together Rosa Parks did not just randomly get tired on a
bus one day they had that planned out and so when we put that out there it makes it hard for our youth and people in our community to think okay can't be like an MLK I can't be like a Booker T Washington I can't be like a Malcolm X because I don't have what it when everything that they did was about group action it was Team Action and another thing I would like to add is that we often look at these people as what happens at the end of their lives or towards as they got older we don't talk about the fact that a lot of these people throughout history that changed things for people were young people if you go back and look at the Civil Rights era the people that were moving things
usually look more like Mr Nichols than they did look like any of our board members and that's something that I want to us as a district to make sure that we're putting into to our students and understanding that is that they are at that change age and age that is what we had that was what Snick was you had these groups that were young if you look at the Black Panthers in these groups they were a lot of them started on college campuses these were young movements so I want to put that out and then speaking on Young Movers I want to lift up Mr kton Wade from medale high school you know it is medale high school but I do want to lift up Kayon Wade um you can clap for Kon waiting clap
Kon recently was awarded the Macintosh scholarship award from the University of Dayton and that is a full full full full full ride uh also will be working with the city of Dayton so I just want to always lift that up because um as Dr Bailey said we don't always talk about the good things those aren't the things plastered on the front of the newspaper that someone at metale high school is getting a full ride and is getting this this scholarship that is named after one of our civil rights Heroes here in WS McIntosh so I want to lift that up I want to lift up those that came out to speak I want to lift up the work that everyone here has been doing I want to lift up those that went on the MLK
March I will say it was a great time out there and I will say me and Dr goodwan had a good time and starting to take over the chance we got to take over the chance and that was fun it's a good experience when you just yell out a song and people start singing it just makes you feel like you're all at peace with each other um lastly I will say that everyone here please please please please please keep in mind that with this weather we have unfortunate people in our community so be on the lookout I see often people online asking where they can take things how can they help if you see that please just respond it's very easy to go past some people just do not know if you tell them hey
just just drop it off of your nearest DPS school we'll make sure you get it it gets where it needs to be because people want to help right now and I think it it behooves us to help people when they want to help us so please help us with that um and with that that is all I have so you know our favorite phrase oh man it wouldn't come up I was trying to queue it up so perfectly pursuant to section 12122 G2 of the Ohio Revis code I moved at this board going to Executive session this meeting is being held to consider the appointment employment appointment employment of a Public Employee also we will be conferring with our attorneys and confidential business information second did you move it I'll entertain a motion to move
into executive session you said you said I moved did I say move I did say it's moving there you've been doing that Dr goodan seconded any questions no questions let's have a vote president Smith yes Miss Wick yes Dr good Wayne yes Dr Bailey yes Mr Lacy yes Mr Walker yes Miss rard yes and Mr Nicholas yes eights not going in there all right we'll meet you all next door see you all later app than for join us stay warm thank you for having the adult transition unit program is a program for students with special needs who have graduated from high school and chose to defer their diploma for a year so they can learn job skills and life skills the goal of the program is for the students to become gamefully employed in the
community some of the life skills that the students learn are how to write the RTA um they work on communication skills and they learn how to budget their money the students earn the program for one school year they start the program in August and end in May the students learn job skills by volunteering at three different sites stclair Community College the University of Dayton and the Gospel Mission at sin Clair Community College and the University of Dayton the students work in the dining hall where they learn customer service skills serving customers they also learned stocking skills and cleaning skills at the Gospel Mission the students learn janitorial skills the majority of the students that complete the program get jobs some places that they get jobs at are the hospital restaurant grocery stores and retail stores
once the students have had their opportunity to learn the different jobs within Food Service here at the college then um it is beneficial for them they are able to go out and Market themselves to the different food service Employers in the Restaurant Association to let them know that they have worked in the front of the house washing tables and and greeting with the customers and vice versa in the back of the house um how to um do all the stock and inventory all the way to uh closing out at the end of the day um taking and mopping and doing all the the traction everything so uh as a benefit for them as they apply within the restaurants then that gives them the ability to let them know that they've been trained in those duties
as a contractor here at Sinclair um we have enjoyed tremendously the students coming in on a a weekly basis helping us with our day-to-day operations and um I think the benefit and the partnership that we have with the Dayton Public School Systems is a wonderful program and we hope that it continues on so we can um have these students be able to go out into the general population and and get jobs Goodwill Easter sales are PR partners with dat and public schools in helping them enrich their lives for better Futures as a job developer we assist the students with developing work rated skills for competitive employment within the community we meet with them each Friday in addition we discuss and demonstrate potential job openings um get to know each person on what their interests are
we discuss and demonstrate um potential job openings help them research that particular position that company and see if it's a good match for each individual that we serve this transition program with Dayton public schools have given students with special needs the opportunity to achieve their transition goals by becoming gainfully employed in the community and also it helps them achieve their Independent Living goals which will make them successful throughout [Music] life project search is a transition to work program for young adults with disabilities it is a unique program that is one school year in length during that time the students will participate in three targeted internships based on their interest and strengths they will acquire competitive marketable and transferable skills through their internships some of the duties that they might participate in are cleaning assisting patients
and staff delivering supplies transporting patients cooking fixing things throughout the hospital and then through these tasks they learn valuable life skills such as how to handle constructive criticism teamwork appropriate communication for the workplace critical thinking if a student is committed to finding competitive employment they will have a job when they are completed with this program we are with them every step of the way so when you first walk in this particular building what you're going to see is you're going to see bright Open Spaces clean floors when they say it's a new age here within this building it truly is the culture here at EJ Brown is about keeping it consistent about keeping it simple keeping it about students how do we get students from where they are now to where we need them to
be so by about being in those hallways building those relationships those positive relationships with students knowing their names and just building that Bond believing in them keep it simple keep it consistent keep it about students that's why we're here at EJ Brown this year we have a very strong Administration team and we have very clear expectations not only for the students but also for the teachers so that consistency is really strong this year and I see that GR growing as we keep moving forward I love challenging the students so I teach science and for me it's more about teaching them to think more than like the content so really getting them to understand what's happening around them and then be able to use that in situations that they might get into outside of the school
we've been changing the expectations and honing more into academics around the students and then we've also been bringing in more Community pieces um we've had some Chang over the years but the last couple years they've stayed the same and we're growing more community base as a security resource officer here my main job is student safety I also am somewhat of a counselor or a mediator to the students a lot of them come and talk to me and we try to figure out Solutions together to make things better because if if things outside of school are affecting you then you're not going to be able to uh get a proper Ed education I believe that building a relationship with these students is the key to them advancing educationally as well as socially EJ Brown is the
best middle school because we have the best sports teams we have the best teachers we have the best SRO team in the district we have the best principal in the district so if you want to be the best you should come to EJ Brown I think students should go here because it gives them a better mindset the biggest difference between elementary and middle school is the moving around but it really wasn't that hard to get used to the way to be a bruin is to follow the breu bees be respectful be responsible be safe and be unstoppable hi my name is Penny Bane I'm a grandmother of two children that attends Ruskin Elementary School I love things down here at Ruskin because I just feel like it's a loving caring School uh they offer so
much it's the love that they gets it takes a village to raise a child and this is a village uh there's a custodian here Mr body he gives them like fist bumps and he makes sure he gives every child one before they enter the school and then if they're tardy they go and then they see Miss love and she's always given be hugs and loves and said now you know get on school on time but my experience with one that I had um is my uh little granddaughter had separation anxiety and um the school helped her tremendously get over that you know and and like uh let her know that she is safe she is you know they got a safe place for her but it's it's wonderful like the staff and they just do
so much hi my name is Marisha Collins and I am a kindergarten teacher here at km Elementary School I'm a product of Dame Public Schools a proud graduate of Dumar high school I had an amazing teachers that impacted my life tremendously so much so that I knew when I graduated I wanted to pursue a career in education my teachers went um went above and beyond their expectations and I knew I wanted to be that kind of educator I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children as well as their families a teacher is um to me a position that you are called to be in it is not something that everyone can be I chose DPS because I had fantastic role models that showed me just what a teacher should be and how
teachers um you know should interact with students and parents I feel um children um need teachers who um care for them and um who have a passion for teaching and I do believe that my passion is is there I can't see me doing anything else and um that's that's why I chose DPS hello I'm Dr David Lawrence interim superintendent of Dayton public schools it is really good to be here with you today this is my first address to the entire School Community a RIT large since convocation and so we have something we' like to share with you so the academic team that we have here has worked closely with Learn to Earn uh the Omega CDC and other community groups such as the NAACP to develop an academic action plan now this is important for
the entire Dayton public schools Community the we are DPS all 2300 employees and why I want my folks in operations I miss you and transportation to know the basic things that we're working on in academics to begin this enormous transformational turnaround in Dayton public schools so that means we all should be saying the same thing about what we're working on to get better uh within day public schools from an academic standpoint and also overall the things that we do around our five uh core principles the five C's and the one of the five C's is culture and that's a big thing we're going to be working on so here here it goes uh the first thing I want to talk about is culture and climate and in culture and climate we wanted to have a
safe and supportive School environment and so we understand that we still have work to do there but that is a really big thing that we working on so when you're out in about you can tell people that we working on culture and climate we're also focused on third grade reading we want to be able to move students rapidly so we want to have a big jump this year and then we want to move forward from there with incremental steps in terms of getting better with third grade reading we know the longitudinal consequences of not being successful there and so that's one of the reasons that we're focusing on third grade reading High School Readiness that means moving eighth graders into ninth grade that's an issue nationally and we suffer from that as well so why
not focus on it so next year we will be working on focusing on our eighth grade transition to high school and we really look forward to seeing freshmen who are more ready for high school the other thing we're looking for is freshman success uh without freshman success that is directly correlated to the graduation rate so that will be a huge emphasis for us this year and then finally College and Career Readiness making sure that when you leave you're able to stay in college and matriculate so those are the five core things that we're working on we have a presentation that will be uploaded to the DPS website and it'll be sent to principles and principles will go through the presentation there's a lot more to it but I just wanted us all on the same
page when we talked about those five core principles and so we're working on culture and climate third grade reading High School Readiness freshman success and College and Career Readiness I want to say that an academic action plan is different than a strategic plan so for all the folks who you here talk about strategic plans those take a long time they're typically on a shelf somewhere and most people don't know what's in them this action plan is very small um it's direct it's targeted and the key word is action we want to follow through with Fidelity and we want to do what we say and say what we do so we look forward to coming out this year to talk about the academic action plan and I so appreciate everyone in Dayton public schools and The

the way up through Administration there's room to grow uh it's just a great environment to work with from a transportation standpoint we're the first and last touch with these kids every day uh with the drivers and the and the school bus equipment um we really focus on on making sure that they're safe and they're safe to get to school and safe to get home from school and my guys are are extremely focused on that and it's very satisfying that we've been able to do that from tires to brakes to structure to electronics to monitoring to GPS you know we have lots of systems in place for the safety of the students the drivers uh making sure that those buses are 100% ready to roll and safe to me I say they're the best team in
Ohio hands down but we still have some things to clean up you know it's it's it's it's we I have great skills but sometimes they got to concentrate and play together and if we play together with great skills we're Unstoppable Belmont soccer has come has come a long way if nobody knows it's a lot of mixed diversity on the steam lot of different languages as a coach to know so sometimes my captain works out well cuz he knows a lot of language we we I use him as an interpreter um but but Belmont is developing very well and I'm looking forward when the seniors gone the ones behind them come up with the same discipline work hard both in the classroom and on the pitch and and we will be fine there's nowh you can
go without academics always always emphasize and stress that Student First and I always every each and every day we get we I take 15 minutes out of practice and we talk about grades we talk about classes we talk about how your day is going you know just to get them to settle CU I can see it on some of them sometimes it's stressful I'll bring them over and we sit and talk about it so I always stress academics Student First student first because if you have the greatest skill in the world and you don't have the academics it's hard yeah my being good and on the soccer team cuz I'm the team captain so I'm really close with everybody we got some few players who don't speak English and Coach doesn't speak doesn't doesn't speak
the language that we speak so it' be hard for him to understand the other players so I have to be there and translate I get to have fun all that stuff and most of the people I know play it and I used to play when I was a kid to be like at old all the teams that we have played choosing us is just incredible feels amazing it just feels amazing Joshua boof is a senior at metale CTC he is in the robotics engineering program and even won a bridge building contest in class this year Joshua is a straight A student and has applied for an engineering internship and also works at AutoZone where he applies the concepts he learns in his robotics classes overall Joshua is an excellent role model for his peers and
a great example of what meale students should strive to be what made you choose engineering engineering um I mean I'm not going to lie to you and say I was always interested in it you know like it was definitely something that I just wanted so I could graduate cuz everybody needed a pathway and I was like okay I got put in this one let me stay here here do what I need to do and as I started you know working at engineering working with robotics 3D printing you know we got a solid works program and stuff like that and I slowly started developing an interest for it you know like it was it was cool to start paying attention to my teacher teaching us about how we could 3D print these objects and it was
cool how did you manage to keep good grades uh stayed focused I kept doing me uh definitely enjoy your experience here you know like even this right here is an experience for us and you can look at this as an opportunity you can look at it as influence to other people whatever reason you're doing this um but keep staying focused I can't tell you enough like if you want a boyfriend girlfriend relationship whatever it may be stay focused on your grades just listen to your teacher do the assignment and then go to hoko you know go to prom play your sport but grades is always is a priority I I don't know what that may be for you but if it's Sports you can't do good in sports without having good grades they're going to
drop you off the team they're going to put you on the bench then you're going to be stressing about I got homework to do I got to catch up on this so just prioritize your grades and you can enjoy your experience why should people come to met our career path was I I truly believe that we have a lot of opportunities for young students to come here and develop an interest and even pursue what their interest is already what are your future career goals uh future career goals that's a good one I mean everybody wants to make good money everybody wants to do what they love so I say something I want to accomplish is I want to be known a little bit whether it's for my pathway or something else that I gain an
interest in cuz we still young so if there something else I gain I think something I want to do is be known you know have an influence on people let anybody know like you don't got to stick to one thing you don't got to follow your parents rules do what you love so I'm definitely I want to I want to do something I love and be known for it what would be your favorite memory at metale favorite memory has to be junior year last year of doing CCP that was the first time I had a professor and the classes were more difficult but it it was fun it was definitely fun because we had evaluations more essays it was just a new experience I can encounter and it definitely expanded my mind and then once
that happened all the other classes came easy because I knew what a real class like a real hard class was so everything else felt kind of like light work do you have a message for the staff here at met keep doing what you're doing uh you guys are doing great I know you guys get a lot of hate here and now um but definitely you guys are fun to be around you guys definitely know how to teach keep doing what you doing and you guys may even have a better future or more opportunities later later [Music] on hi my name is C Rodriguez and I teach fourth grade ELA at the international school um Hispanic Heritage Month is really important to me because as an American born and I tell people I'm Dominican race I'm
first generation is important for me as a mom and also to be in tune with my culture to keep some of my cultural Roots just like the food and our culture big in life in my house and also the things that I grew up I also want to implement and teach my child so I always make sure to incorporate parts of my culture so for example I share like the foods that I eat for breakfast in my culture like platanos mangoo rice and beans I've cooked for my students I've also let them like play my own music that I listen to um I brought my child in and we incorporate just explaining my experience and telling them giving them examples so they don't think that I'm always you know yelling at them but to tell
them that I also understand because I too was raised with the same uh cultural values as they were I think it's funny that you say that because I guess living here being American but Dominican race is I I can relate more but I guess when you come into a country where everything is new to them being who you are is who you are every day so they're not 100% aware but I think once we teach them that Implement that like we try to teach them about different holidays or stuff like that it's something that can Now understand be proud to be you know where they're from and say I have a month kind of that's dedicated to me in America that we recognize and it's also a great way for us to introduce their culture
to other other students here American students or just in general to teach other people about stuff not even I find food is important because it brings people together so that's a great way to introduce people to your [Music] culture hi my name is Dan Soph I am a student of International School of grade 11 I from from Colombia and Colombia is a beautiful country have a lot food I like food of my country I have a agriculture I like that and it's more beautiful than something place my name is Edgar student in the International [Music] School [Music] 3:03:43.479,1193:02:47.295 [Music] my name is Tracy Davis Hinton I'm a language arts teacher at tho Marshall High School here in Dayton public schools I often tell uh people that I've had great days I've had challenging days but
I've never had a boring day so I think the number one reason I like working at Dayton public schools is that there's always something new and interesting happening I think that dating public is a good place to start because you're going to get a diverse group of young people that you're going to meet you're going to have seas and staff that are going to work with you Mentor you and help uh you build your skill sets season teachers are excited to see new teachers come in and they are there to daily provide help with challenges that they might have whether it be from classroom management whether it be how do you lesson plan um how do you actually Implement into practice some theories that you learned at school also they have a resident educator program
that outside of your work day allows you to meet with other young teachers who are across the district not just in your school building see what challenges they're having and work collaboratively with season teachers to help you solve those problems Dayton public is a child centered District the way it makes a difference is we build relationships we build authentic relationships and dating and I don't know that that happens everywhere because I've been in other educational spaces where I don't see that happening so we not only know our students we build relationships with their families uh we build relationship with Community Partners who are then able to meet the needs that we might have gaps for for our young people so I think because we Endeavor to go outside of just traditional curriculum that it broadens
our students Horizons and ways it might not have been if they were not a date in public success looks like you never let any anybody determine what your success is make smart goals make goals and make steps to reach your goals understand success looks different from anybody else when it's your success your responsibility is to take care yourself as well as provide some additional assistance and support for your family and other members of this Society success looks like us and we are you we walk some of the same streets same neighborhoods you guys walk every day Road the bus you know like you guys walk home from practice walked home from school had some of the same challenges you guys had so you know I'm here today because of them and one of these days
you guys are going to be up here because of us all I care about overall is difference that I make in society difference I make in my family a difference I make with people like you that people take the time when I was your age and younger to drop pearls and wisdom on me so my job is to do the same to you and I've done that not just in day but around the world what you do with your your life at the end a lot of your friends aren't going to be able to walk this path with you you're going to have to separate yourself and you got to show mentally first that you can get through that challenge I want to be the best of everything I did um on the football field
basketball court uh the track uh the classroom the same mentality that I had engaging in sports I took it into the classroom the more educated you are the better you do with your finan finial planning for yourself and your family and those who are around you but education really is the key to opening so many doors education takes you around the world to travel uh educ education introduces you to people that you never thought you'd be introduced to um education makes life interesting and [Music] fun if anybody is watching this you can tell we have some amazing Dynamic smart wonderful kids in dating Public Schools tell me why you're in dating Public Schools um I like going to EJ Brown because of the staff I love the staff yeah you got a new principal he
is good M he walks around a lot checks on you guys I like him I want to be a robotics engineer I want to take that to college and do great things with it how'd you come up with that I'm in a pathway called Advanced manufacturing and I'm taking it currently so your exposure or your experience in advanced manufacturing that you start thinking about hey this is the field I want to go into yes sir yes awesome I like going to Belmont because I like the people and I like the teachers I like the staff and especially like the principal Miss mdll I want to go to Dayton public school because I feel like every single teacher in Dayton public schools are really appreciated of the students that they have and show a lot of
love to them what I like most about the district is all of the opportunities that they have such as DPS University where you can earn college credits while you're still in high school the staff is really welcoming and they're always pushing you to do your best in whatever you do I'm looking forward to getting some of my college credits already out of the way before I go to college I have a lot of favorite staff members but the one who I would say influences me the most is most likely miss MO because she just stays on top of everyone and she makes sure that you're doing well and having a good day and stuff like that I'm thinking of studying a law and becoming a lawyer because I don't really like the laws we have
now so I'd like to maybe change them I like it so you want to be an advocate yes DeAndre I've thought about being a realtor I always wanted to uh what get rid of yeah yeah I'm going tell you I've never heard a kid say that I wanted to get rid of the whole bunch of empty vacant houses around my neighborhood feel me it just seemed like a good thing to do cuz it just make the neighborhood look bad even though it's good people around there it just make my neighborhood look bad the whole staff and administration helped me get through my sophomore year all the way to my senior year King I appreciate you sharing that space where you said you had some adversity you know and that this hasn't always been an easy
Road and there was a whole family that wrapped their arms around you I want you to know how much we and they public schools are uh proud of you uh first of all and how much we uh how much we wish you the best in the future and we hope that you stay in touch with us so we're able to talk about what a graduate looks like as they move out into the world and and and do things other than High [Music] School hi I'm Gerard Miller a scholar and leader at CTC parents and students did you know that college credit plus is a program that provides students with the opportunity to receive college credits during high school for free students save time and money by earning college credits for free in high school with

role model for his peers After High School Chris plans to attend college so how do you balance work school and sports um it's based off communication you have to be in communication with your employer with with the with your coach and obviously stay on task in school it's about getting your work done and you have the time to so could you tell us the importance of being a team player not just in sports but in school yeah um it's like I said earlier it's a lot of communication you got to communicate with your team on the game and like out of the game make sure they're on the right track making sure they're not doing anything they're not supposed to be doing and same in class if you have a group assignment make sure you
communicate with your your peers so what's a moment that stuck out to you while attending dud bar probably winning my first baseball game with my team that was pretty fun experience that I will always remember mostly because um we were losing for the first couple Innings of the game we managed to bring it back towards the end which was a pretty good experience do you have any idea what you'd want to major in or continue doing After High School I know my major year I want to do engineering so what is it that you like about engineering um I like the fact that some engineering cuz there's multiple different engineering jobs but some of them you can build stuff like cuz I like to be Hands-On when I'm working so with me being Hands-On with
my job I think that'll play a good part in me wanting to keep the job what advice would you want to give other students that want to improve their life it's about how you maintain your life if you're using your life to do drugs and stuff like that stuff you a't supposed to be doing you ain't using your life right in my opinion uh do you have a message for your class um stay focused and get your diploma that's about it Dayton public schools takes pride in keeping students safe at all times starting with the moment they board the bus each morning introducing the traversa ride 360 app also called my ride K through 12 the latest safety Edition in student transportation with traversa ride 360 important features that keep your child safe are in

so I'm here today with five of our best SRO uh I've worked with one very closely intimately We Walk The Halls at dur Marshall every day and she'll introduce herself in just a moment and another one uh we also Walk The Halls every day that's right I got two I have two of my people here I can just hear it now favoritism favoritism but you know hey uh you know I know what they can do we walk those Halls together so uh I'm going to allow our guests to introduce themselves uh starting to my left their right hit it vanoi Garrett Horseman Elementary okay what high school did you attend by the way I went to Broad Ripple High School in Indiapolis I got you my name is danne pin I'm at Bell Haven Elementary
Dane what high school did you attend Middletown High School midies yes sir I'm Ernestine Sledge Sr at Kaiser and what high school did you attend I'm from Chicago so high school was George Henry caros I gotta I'm going somewhere with that before the podcast is over okay my name is Anthony Jackson Go by AJ um SRO at dumbar high school and I would ask what high school oh yeah and I went to Patterson Chris oh my gosh don't be like that I am Shay Smith and I am one of Safety and Security liaison I am over the East quadrant and I went to Springfield South High School got you still split up there huh spring up all right I'm want to come back to that at some point well I'm out the gate with my
first question um I talked this morning I was in a meeting talking about team and how you all are part of the team what makes what makes a good administrative Sr match what makes that team really good and if you've been on a team tell me some of the characteristics of that team and how it worked sure what makes a good team is the principal and the SRO really getting along having a good relationship being able to talk to one another especially if there's a issue or a problem she should be able to come to me as the SRO I should be able to come to her as uh the SRO and the principal and we just got to be able to get together uh have conversation and solve the problems that need to be
solved in the building I was supposed to start off with our five core guiding principles in dating Public Schools the five season I just wrote down Communications so sounds like there's got to be a lot of that Comm a lot of communication yeah what what are the things make the relationship special what make what makes it work I I know I know your principal loves you I just took her out to dinner the other day if she watches this that's three straight dinners on me let let's get it together let's get it together lady next one's on you but go right ahead shout out to principal Miss Bailey Katrina Bailey um I was my Dr Phillips but you you got it you you got it love her too I i' I've had the pleasure of
working for a lot of very good principles um with whom I've had a lot of great relationships with I had um like you said Dr Phillips uh Miss Bailey um Dr Marina Randolph I take her too they go together and cost me a lot but continue I love them I love them and as we we had a great team we worked as I mean it just really came it a lot of it was just being able to to like G said communicate with each other and then you know compromising just taking taking ideas off of you know from each other from each side from the security side from the administrative side putting putting together so that it makes sense because that's that's what I'm like let's do something that's do what makes sense you know
and um a lot of times that I mean that's that's how we that's how we got along and that's how we made things work and that's why we were successful Miss Sledge what say you what I like about um teamwork is when you can talk with with your principal and assistant principal and come together with a plan I like that um a plan every student is different every student situation is different um um my principal is Alex Robertson and Kaiser and um he mentioned to me a student he said uh she got in trouble um on social media he said could you talk to her I said oh yeah I don't have a problem with that so at after lunch I um took her to my office but before I went to my office everybody
was like what did she do she didn't do anything we're just going to have a conversation so I think with some of the ideas that school like if a student is with the SRO is like they're in trouble they're not in trouble we just want to have a conversation okay so we did I spoke with her and uh gave her some pointers and um I told her if she needed to speak to me when she gets in the building or you know before she leave come talk to me Dan what do you say what makes this what makes a special relationship between the esero and the principal what makes that team go well with my and with Miss I work with DJ Kelly and Miss Kelly Washington and our relationship is A1 I could ask
for better principles for real I couldn't ask for their excellent to work for I go in the building every day I say good morning boss but she's my boss but that in that building I no right is my boss but that's my boss in that building and we had that relationship that she she comes to me if anything in that building she comes to me like I know you got my back regardless whatever Dane parin has my back for DJ Kelly and it's like teamwork being together yeah she is universally recognized as one of the best principles in the district I've seen her in action uh shout out to her and the bell Haven what are they the Bobcats Bobcats yeah baven B Haven Bobcats I'm going to spend some time over there uh she
said I'm going to be on lunch duty and breakfast Duty so I can't wait okay my partner Shay Smith what makes a relationship special because you and I have one we do so I come from um I'm coming from the supervisor role but I was in a building for 11 years M and one thing that I was I'm thankful for was that 11 years in the building because I was able to bring to this role the knowledge that I had from the building and the things that ad administrators ask for the things that administrators need and also be that voice and advocate for the es that was in that building I'm not so far removed from what it is that they all do every day that I don't understand what it is they're going through
so I'm kind of that advocate in that voice but personality wise personalities is one of the main things that I look at when we're trying to pair sro's with administrators so when we have those lists that come out at the end of the year where principles are going to go and we've already put sro's in certain places I'm the person sitting there looking going o no yeah we're going to have to move this one to this one because everyone looking at this right now everyone brings something different to the table absolutely so if I know that your strong suit is handling situations without needing to have the principal and I know that you have a principal that's going to expect you as I did to know your job do your job and catch me on
the back end and tell me what is that you did CU your job is not it's not my job to tell you how to do your job every day I should be able to give you a directive and move on and then you have other ones that want to know every step that you make and that's fine but I need an SRO to work with that person that can accept that style of leadership so for me it's knowing personalities and once you get those two personalities that mesh you get a marvelous team you just said something really interesting I think I would to follow up on I wasn't going there but I am you talked about style of leadership mhm uh we you know you were special you were a terrific investigator uh I never
touching my Pearl yeah yeah I never saw you uh sit down for those people who may not know us that and we're in Dayton and I was a former principal at third gr Marshall High School and we work together and so active terrific investigator smart um could see things happening before they happen and I'm really my style is like a hands off I just let people do their job I am not a micromanager so what style do you do do you all like working with in uh in terms of your leadership or is there or is there a special style that matters you just do you GNA do your job either way for me the style really doesn't matter okay because like Miss Mouse she's a real loving principal yes you know she's meat she's
mild but you can't take advantage of her that that goes for you know the kids the staff so the style doesn't matter I work for Miss go for seven years their styles are different very so but at the same time they both are effective principles so I could work for either style it doesn't really matter okay that's good feedback the style you said I got this I'm figure it out man I see you sh your head like I I'm G figure it out I'm going work with whoever I'm going to work with you know regardless I worked with Miss Stokes when I first starting this business and she was wonderful to work for now I got Miss Kelly so it just like I didn't leave I didn't miss nothing their styles were basically the same
gotcha you work for some hammers over there very different styles um yeah and then and then some of them I guess felt like there were a lot kind of similar to miss uh Miss Phillips is very she she's a very one of those loving principles but at the same time she's she she's not she's not Meek but she but she loved her kids so I've never had any principal who loves their student more than her it just it I makes me almost feel emotional thinking about it like the way the things that I would that I would see that she would do for them you know that nobody knew about all those things that the little things that she did for her kids was just you know it was just so heartwarming um then there
was uh principles who you know I've had I have worked for a principal who was like more of a micromanager and with my style I think it it didn't work very well because just for me so my style as an SRO is more of a like you know I I can get I'll get it done and I'm going come back and let you know what happened I'm trying to put out the fires before it even gets to you so you don't have to worry about it as a principal as administrative team and then and we have administrators who that doesn't really work for them and I understand that that's how they are you know so you so we had to find the balance because you got to get through it so we you know you
get through it I'm I'm gonna make it work we G we G like we I gotta be here you got to be here so we're gonna make this work we gonna make this happen but as far as you know preferred though you know yeah I like to be able to like I said do my job I'll let you know what's going on if if it's big if it's big enough to you need to know I got you but if if not like I'll take care of it don't even worry about it I got it when we said balance I heard Miss Sledge go right absolutely I heard you yeah yeah you know with everything I'm more so of an observer so if there's a situation you take it all in if a situation is going
on I observe what's going on um I had a situation where uh Mr Robinson called me over the radio and he needed me to help them get a student out of the hallway well by knowing the student because every now and then he has a tendency to act out and I talk with him so they couldn't get him to the office so I asked him what's going on what happened to you so he was like I was upset and I this that so I said okay well you know you weren't supposed to act outright he said yeah I said okay well I need you to go to the office and so we had our psychologist say we're going to call we're going to call your father and and I'm like because he wouldn't move he's
like I'm not going to the office if you calling my father so then I said well you know what let's go to the office and have a conversation he was like okay and so then I was able to get in him in the office and then I sat down with him and I was like it's GNA be okay and I'm like do not tell him that you're calling his father I know you're calling his father I know you want him out the school but let him just sit here and just be okay you're going to address it a different way but but you know my thing is trust and the kids look to you and they want to be able to trust you and know that you're not going to put them In Harm's Way
so with the style like I said I just observe and then then I then I react and then I'm like okay let's get this handled a different way not your way but a different way so the child can go ahead and do what they need to do you said key word trust that's going to trigger two questions for me the first is going to be around teachers the second is going to be around kids I'm going to ask you after the first question around some of the most difficult kids and how you deal with them a reality is you are the people who are called to deal with the most difficult kids we'll come back to that the kids are coming from a classroom a lunchroom a recess what have you seen from some of
the best teachers who deal with behavior and check this out when I go into buildings there's a couple of people who see everything the custodian the SRO and Nutri nutrition services because every kid comes here if you go and just sit and listen to them long enough they can they can tell you the SRO can tell you who's teaching and who isn't the SRO can tell you who can handle kids and who can't the SOS can tell you who cares and who doesn't that's true am I lying that's true should I continue to preach so 100% right so right right the principles aren't the only people walk around the building right absolutely so we may walk more than the principles not me no not you no not you not miss go Miss mouse walks a
lot but but yeah so you so yes so you all see all that right and so what do you see from some of the best teachers as you walk around like what are the what are the traits characteristics what are some of your observations when you when you see these really good teachers you even know who's teaching you me even though you're not a principal so for me um and I'm in multiple different buildings throughout the day and the best teachers that I see are the ones that a have a smile on their face mhm um these kids are not a check these are Personalities in your shaping lives so when you come in every day with a smile on your face and you put whatever you have going on outside and left it out
there and you came in here because you know they have things that are bigger than us that's a great teacher you're coming in with the right attitude m one that asks questions and wants the answ and will take the constructive criticism no matter who it's from and people that value everyone in that building okay not just the people with degrees but everyone in that building everyone in that building the ones that are willing to communicate with their parents that are not afraid to speak to a parent no matter what the situation is but also the ones that take the time to know I can't come at vanoi the same way I can come at Dane I've got to come to him differently even though they might have done the same thing I need to talk
to him a little different because he doesn't receive my message like that they have to be willing to come from where they are and don't just put your hand down and say hey grab my hand I'm going to bring you up here where I am you have to come all the way down to where they are meet them there and walk them up and you might have to take a couple steps back down mhm cuz they might not walk as fast as you but you got to take them back up if you want them to get to where you are yeah you all are walking in and out of classroom I mean Dane it's been a lot of turnover over there at B hman so you seen a lot of teachers what what do you
what do you see when you say man this teacher is really good what do you see I see caring very caring yes they like caring like they will they will spend their hard on money you know I see this one teacher I got Miss Lyman she buys pizzas whatever the kids want they have to be they have to do right now they just ain't going to get it and they have to respect that woman and she she's very like she's very hand hands on with these kids me really hands on and then when they call me down to her room when she calls me her room somebody don't mess up because this L care for I don't know what color you is she cares about her kids regardless of whatever and and that's like I
said caring she's very caring that's one of the teachers I like work with this line because she cares about the kids that's what I like about Miss Sledge you do a lot of observing I can't wait to hear what you going to say you take it all in what do you see when you walking in these classrooms what do you see when you see great teaching what what traits qualities what do you what do you see and feel when you walk in and out I see they're very concerned um they engage with the students um they work with them and make sure that they get it um if one student is being taught the same thing and this other student is not getting it they make sure sure that they get it but they're taught
just like you were saying Shay um like you can't talk to this student or or this person a certain way but you want them to get the message so what I like is that they make sure that every student in their class gets the message and that they're learning but Nori you've had a chance to walking in around in and out of a lot of classrooms Side West Side High School elementary middle yeah when you see a when you see a teacher a good one you know you see it what what do you see when I see really good teachers I see that they're engaged with their kids they um like where I'm at now in my building the teachers you don't hear no yelling in my building you don't hear teachers no yelling huh
no yelling you are correct that was it today I just came from there you don't you had me doing lunch duty well I was here waiting on you I did your lunch duty you don't hear the screaming you know our teachers at whors man I think they just love the kids and we have a really good group of kids you know they're respectful you know you have that one or two but overall we don't have a lot of hypeness in the building everything's pretty calm you know you know the teachers are calm um the principles are calm it's Craig is calm so but when it comes to our teachers um they're just really teaching our kids they're really trying to teach our kids my man AJ I mean you've seen a lot a lot a
lot a lot a lot of teachers m a lot of good teachers a lot of bad teachers um the good teachers that I see they are most a lot of times they seem like these are people who were born to teach I mean there there's there's people who that's interesting there's people who decide one day oh I want to be a teacher or I want to be a teacher because I need this to be able to get to that position and we have those in our district but there you all see you see right through it huh but but there are those who were born to teach may not even wanted to teach but you fell into it because you had noice there was no way to get around it because you were born to
do it and those people those individuals I've seen in their classrooms where they have structure they have they have man they with all the the different generations and of students that we've had come through our classro they're able to find a way to to relate to them to to be able to reach them as Shay said to meet them at their level so that they can so that they can keep them engaged so that they can communicate and the relationships that they build with them these are the good teachers these are the ones who you know I mean you know fortunately we have a lot of teachers from our own area so you have teachers who they grew up with with with that student's parents you know or we I know your uncle I know
your grandma your grandma was was my choir director at church what things like that so those all those relationships they come they come around so that you you build that you know to the point where there's students who calling their teachers you know their Uncle you know that's Uncle that's my you know what I'm saying things like that I've heard them say that before yeah yeah you know because because it turns into that so it comes in and those um because they have that they have that like I said that relationship that communication and they build they build these relation this in this rapport with their with their students that and you can have the same you can take one group of students out of one classroom put them in a whole another classroom and
you would think it's an entirely different different group of students and it's the same kids like how was the kids in this room this way you said take these 22 kids the same 22 them up put them in another room and it's and they totally different totally different you you would you would think like like what you don't act like that in that person's room over there or you know and it's and why oh you know she cares she cares or you know she like you know they acting like they don't want to teach me or you know things like that you but you you just see a difference though and you know as so like you said the people who walk around the building we see we know I walk by a classroom I
can just hear I hear the teaching going on I I hit the next the next classroom I hear the struggle that the teachers have that the teachers having made trying to teach you know what I'm saying and that's why and I said yeah a she's struggling or he's struggling you know what I'm saying Mr s so he but and it's and it's it's not 100% the teacher fault it ain't it is not some students are are challenging but still you got to be able to you got you chose this profession you got to be able to figure out how am I going to reach you so I can teach you also you see them up oh you see them up you see them up and engage they're walking around the classroom they're they're talking and
they're moving they're at the board they're not just sitting in their chair when you have when you by classes but that's not always true exactly you right CU I got a couple teachers right now my their desk and run right there Reas and their kids are move part segment it's be a cut our kid those kids are Lon and I have some teach say don't move so we're confusing teaching with learning I'm not saying the kids are not learning what I'm saying is instruction is up and engagement because if I'm sitting behind my desk that's way up here in the front I don't know that little Johnny way back in the back is even paying attention to me true so I need to be able to get up and move around this room because I
need to see what's going on I need to see that little Annie is sitting over here and then she's in tears and she's got her head down I need to notice what's going on in my classroom and I can't notice what's going on in my classroom if I'm sitting behind my desk dictating to you I'm not teaching you sounds like I'm a bunch of principles now so so I I got a I got a I have a question just take just a few seconds and and think about and it might be easy might not take you a few seconds think about the most challenging and difficult kid you ever dealt with the most challenging and difficult kids you ever dealt with and how did you get through to that kid or did you I had
a kid at he was challenged MH cussed out the teachers all the time he was in one and he was um one day he said he was going to kill himself so they took him to the office they called the police they called the paramedics they was in there for 30 minutes trying to get him to go to the hospital but at this time me and him have developed such a great relationship he had covid I took him orange juice I took him stuff to his house to eat so they like call Mr gear I walked to the office I asked them please let me talk to him by myself cuz he's not leaving out that room with them so I come walking out 20 seconds later we walked to the we walked to the
ambulance he got in I said I will call you this evening I'll called him this evening after his mom picked him up from the hospital that's how you develop relationships with kids you get to know and they get to trust you I love it especially in high schools so when you me AJ was partners and of course you have certain kids that don't like AJ and didn't like me so I would just say hey AJ your boy needs some attention right AJ yeah or he would call me and be like hey G you need to come and get your boy so it's in high schools especially you have to develop relationship with kids and once you do that they'll give you whatever and they'll treat you like you their uncle because they say that's what
they call they call me and AJ at Dumar you know yeah Ern SL think about that most difficult kid how'd you get through to he he or she well um I wouldn't say he special needs but he has a lot of issues and he would come to school with an attitude every day every day and um we changed uh with the book bag checks so now I'm at the front door because we have the late students coming in and I'm making sure that their book bags are checked so this one particular day um he came in and I was checking other students books bag and he walked past me I said because I got to know his name ah you know I have to check your book bag and kept on walking I said okay
I'm done with you all I said and I walked up to him I said I need to check your book bag oh I'm not so me him and the book bag went to the office he was highly upset because I don't think he's been dealt that way so now he comes in take your hood off how you doing what's going on with you and I engage in a conversation with him is very brief and he lets me check his book bag um and he's okay he doesn't say hi Miss Sledge or anything like that but I come to his level how you doing what's up and he like I'm good I'm like okay so I think he's on medication but he's doing things differently he's not as bad because it was an everyday thing with
he and the teachers so now he's developed a different way of approaching but I believe that the people that he lives with because I think it's an aunt it's working with him good Jay Smith we've had some doozies I have had some dooes man we've had some do had some I mean and even before you met me and after I mean think about the most difficult student and how you got through to him and I watched you in action so I can't wait to hear that he the answer I saw it my own eyeballs my own eyeballs I saw it so I had a student at um middle when it was Middle School you know I was there do it all um and this young lady was from the Congo though um she did not
trust anyone she did not like anyone she wouldn't talk to anyone she was very violent very violent and at first I'm like cheny good shout out cheny good love you cheny good chainy good why do you keep saving her stop this we're not we are setting a tone y y y and I actually prayed about it because I'm like there's something there's something going on with this child I don't know what it is I don't how to reach her thank you Joe thank you Alex nice meeting you you have that ready [Music] to okay I I would like to me for that one loaded back loaded anybody need time or we ready we all ready you get there you get let the record show that the board of education at the dayon city school district

Workforce committee that really works on how do we get our students uh into positions that prepares them for after they leave us and you know prepares those them for those positions and then also Student Activities Committee which through the breath of uh child's time in daon public schools how do we help help to work to provide activities for them to keep them engaged keep them around keep them immersed in positive activities and also with the growth of our operations at Welcome Stadium there's a separate Welcome Stadium committee that pulls that out of Athletics to give Athletics space to deal with the day-to-day of Athletics and things that work with them working with principles and our athletic directors and also understanding The Welcome Stadium pieces that you know as we know we have the state track
meet coming up we have our our gift shop um and things over there so bringing that out and understanding that as a piece and how do we work that as a operation piece that can bring back into the district up with that I will move for adjournment second um there was some questions go ahead thank you um so I was looking over this when I first saw it today and I would like to first of all um you know uh Eric uh board member Walker and I um have spoken about the parent family community engagement um he has some really fantastic ideas and I've really enjoyed also watching our um uh Community engagement coordinator I don't think I got that title right um Angela warley and the work she's been doing there and given that
Eric Walker has some really great new fresh ideas I would like to seed um the chair of that committee to him I think that he would serve really well in that position um I would also like to request and um I can reach out to board members about this in the next week but I would like to uh publicly put out aest request um uh the the Committees that I'm assigned to through the Ohio School Board Association is the Southwest Regional um executive committee um I serve as the legislative liaison and then um most importantly and most valued to a lot of the work that I do as the advocacy um delegate um who is a assigned to this congressional district um so much of the work that I do with osba overlaps with the
nsba um and the cosba and I would like to request that I be placed on the nsba committee as well too um I I have other um ideas about a few other policies but those are the two biggest ones that I would like to make a note of and I can reach out to board members and and speak with them if they'd be willing to um make some changes there okay I will say that there's a simple change with the family engagement community and the others requests have been duly noted any other questions uh okay um I I would I I did look at these assignments and things like that um with the school assignments I I did happen to tour Mound Street um I did have a question I know that the three-year Mark
is coming up for them getting back the bottom level I did see a classroom that is in the hallway so just wanted the clarity on when that may take place I think that all of our buildings and I've attended probably 14 um would love to see more of my colleagues out as well because that has been something that they expressed that board members do not do um and are is building so hopefully that work continues with every board member with the assignments they have whether school or committee um and make sure that the community knows parents and students and staff that I am always here although I may not be the main point of contact but feel free to reach out thanks appreciate that I'm glad you mentioned that uh encourage everyone to get out
