hello I'm Amaria was and we're here at Fairview Elementary School interviewing the student of the month amima and Mima has assisted teachers in translating for various students around school she always helps with the smile and is very patient she's helpful in the classroom even without anyone asking she is the class messenger and handles the job well she's at school every day and in uniform she is kind to others and always respectful tell us your name of who you are my name is amima and I'm a c-squader at Fairview okay congratulations on being a student of the month thank you tell me how you started helping teachers by translating for students I was in fourth grade um there was this case this kid doesn't know English and my teachers say uh can you go help him
and I said yeah because I knew English in Swahili at the same time okay what languages do you speak kinyawanda English Swahili and a lot more okay what's your primary language Swahili okay tell me about your family my I have four sisters and three brothers my dad is from Uganda and my mom's my dad my mom's from Congo and I have more family Africa but they're about to come this week are you from Uganda too when did you come to the United States I cannot remember was like five about five okay okay how do you feel about being named student of the month great what was your first reaction I was I was happy and scared good evening it's okay what do you like about being a like to call to order this October 18
0032022 business meeting Madam treasure may we have a roll call president Smith president Mr Samson president miss weekend here Dr Pickett Dr Pickett has an excuse that sense Dr Goodwin here Mr Lacy here six present thank you maybe stand for the Pledge of Allegiance thank you all we'll start today first with a special presentation Dr Lolly could you lead us into our first president presentation please yes our first presentation for this evening is a presentation uh from our positive School climate many of the people in the room are positive School climate coaches and we're so thankful to have them uh part of the Dayton public school team PSC is actually PBIS and I will turn it over to Dr Sheila Burton to introduce those who are going to present and also to explain why we
do PSC and what PBIS actually is so Dr Burton good evening board president vice president board member superintendent Lolly treasurer so tonight we'd like to give you an overview of the work that has been going on for years here in the district under the guidance of positive School climate if you look at the research it's called positive behavioral intervention supports but here in Dayton we daytonized it and we changed the name to positive School climate because that aligns with our student code of conduct book so the coaches are here tonight they have a presentation that they'd like to share with everyone about the work that has been done in the district and how the district has been recognized for that work so Marcus good evening my name is Marcus Vaughn Dayton public schools alumni and
positive School climate coach I wanted to start the evening off by asking a few questions if a child doesn't know how to read what do we do teach if a child doesn't know how to swim what do we do teach if a child doesn't know how to act what do we do we teach if a child doesn't know how to behave what do we do we teach in Ohio it is law that we teach Behavior and that is what we call PBIS positive school I mean positive behavior interventions and support in Ohio in Ohio districts must develop a structure for providing PBIS professional developments to all staff at least every three years have a decision-making framework that increases academic and behavioral success teach school-wide behavioral expectations Implement consistent systems of acknowledgment and correcting behaviors and
it engages families and is designed the school environments for success now let me allow me to have one of my colleagues explain how we Implement that in Dayton public schools hi my name is Ricky Terrell a positive School climate coach at Dayton public schools everything we do at Dayton public schools students are the center of that framework when we look at our Dayton Way flower we talk about customer service curriculum instruction professionalism and where PSC positive School climate or PBIS falls into the Dayton Way is under culture uh positive School climate is a framework that the district uses to create more Equitable cultures and buildings across the district so like it's already been stated PBIS is PSC if you Google PBIS you will end up on a rabbit hole that can last you decades with
research that follows up uh teaching establishing and acknowledging desired behaviors again this is a framework so this is something that can look different and should look different in all schools so if we're looking at Belmont if we're looking at Kemp Valerie if we're looking at oakwoods or Miamisburg all these buildings use a PBIS framework but it is important and vital that it is Equitable Equitable in every building and meeting the diverse needs of the students and the staff in those buildings so here at Dayton public there are lots of things that fall underneath the positive School climate umbrella are there a lot of things that are currently in place and a lot of things that we will be working uh with implementation over the next year and into the future so if you guys have
heard I'm sorry that was not a tab it's weird not clicking so sorry uh so yeah maybe you've heard some of these acronyms across the district Champs CPI SEL culturally responsive teaching are things that we have been working to implement at PBIS for many years conscious discipline is something that preschools use in order to bring the PBIS framework to preschools olveas we'll be talking about that a little bit in the future that is the bullying prevention program that PBIS is working to help Implement across the district thank you uh the tiered framework that we're talking about this is a visual of the tiered framework it's important that we are looking at things in a tiered system so we're looking at three separate tiers if we're looking at academics uh for looking at attendance if we're
looking at behaviors if we're looking at Resorts that your family may stay when they go to Disney World there is usually a tiered system in place the firsts here that we're going to look at today is the universal tier so when we're looking at Behavior it is important that things that we are implementing for all students to have access to that 80 percent of those students are able to be successful with those prevention-based services so these are prevention strategies services that are placed into uh that are placed into schools that allow up to 80 percent of students to be successful once we have around 80 percent of students being successful uh with tier one Prevention Services we can start looking at students that need additional supports so this usually is around 15 of your students
that will need Target interventions so I know that these students will not need individualized supports but they may need some extra coaching some extra mentoring from adults in order to be successful with the curriculum and then finally when we have the universal and targeted tier into place we can start looking at the top tier the Intensive tier this is usually between one to five percent of your population and these are students that need intensive supports in order to be successful accessing the general Behavior curriculum some of the things that we already have in place at DPS and we're moving to make sure those things stay implicit place at DPS in each of these tiers uh Universal we have mega skills restorative practices and again The olvious Bullying prevention program that is going to be rolled
out will be a prevention-based services that all students no matter what tier they're currently functioning in will have access to those services tier two check and check out mentoring group and social skills groups are some of the supports that buildings have in place across the district to help students with a little extra support in order to have access to the universal tier and then the Intensive tier individual supports these are students that need an individual programs or individual plans to be successful in a school setting uh and at Dayton public that could look like resiliency coordinators or Behavior Support plans next up I want to have Adam Scott to talk a little bit more good evening Adam Scott PSC coach PSC provides a multitude of professional development opportunities some of these opportunities are are trauma-informed
practices Champs a ratio to positive interactions prevention and intervention strategies for the classroom providing effective feedback restore and restorative practices there's a pretty extensive list up there on on the screen in addition to providing professional development PSC also collaborates with several departments within DPS we collaborate with Equity curriculum Safety and Security Transportation Office of curricular engagement we work with all of these these different departments and and some of the products that we've been able to create out of our collaboration first and foremost PSC has been vital in the creation of the student Code of Conduct Handbook as well as the data dashboard in which we take a look at not only attendance data but discipline data so we're able to create Equitable Equitable support plans for buildings additionally PSC coaches have worked with staff members
on training for the on course program finally PSC has collaborated with emerge emerges a national PBIS video Resource Group that came to Dayton public schools to film our transportation staff our drivers and our students we're going to watch a 30-second video clip from their bus safety module that's used during their transportation staff training all across the country getting off the bus as well as a trip Hazard a safety that's the most biggest for me we really have been dealing with this year but I do hear and share with the Safety Committee that a lot of it is you know the children just won't sit down and we can't move the bus or operate a bus while a child is standing in the fighting when we got a group of kids or two or three kids
that might be fighting or we got two or three children that are standing on the bus we just can't operate a bus like that and those are obviously uh safety issues um according to the law we need them to sit down to be safely transported the school bus is the safest transportation for a child to get to school the most effective strategy we have in any activity Deanna granroth I'm part of the PSC team here at Dayton public schools one of the really fun parts of our job as a coach there's nine of us coaches is that we get to coach teachers one-on-one so we go into and we observe and we visit these classrooms every week and we have a weekly cycle of like four to eight weeks we get to work with individual
teachers across the district and in those observations and those those times that we spend with them we collaborate on Dwayne um setting goals reflecting on their professional their professional goals but then also doing reflective conversations with them each week on where they want to grow professionally but then also implementing research-based classroom management time management and then also looking at Behavior strategies things that they want to do individually with students and then student groups so in that tier one tier two and tier three levels um the ongoing thing that we're most excited about in our team right now is we're providing curriculum based and um classroom management series for all of our new and seasoned teachers starting this week and there'll be a whole season series right now in the fall and then again in the
winter in the spring foreign the PSC teams that we helped to support here in each so each building has a PSE team that they help to implement all of the the tiered items with PSC we support the building PSE teams in developing their their teams and then coaching them to design their school-wide expectations so each building has three to five expectations that they follow each of these expectations then develop lesson plans to teach the students how to safely move through their school day and then as with any teaching initiative the PSD requires continued professional development for all the staff to ensure that all of these practices are done with fidelity behaviors are taught and then acknowledged and discouraged based on the building's PSE framework and then the data that we use we collect and we
look at monthly to figure out how to improve all of our our systems and then also how to celebrate our students and their successes based on all of the work that the schools are doing last year we had three of our elementaries win the bronze medal award we had Fairview camp and Valerie and today we have one of our was PSE coach turned assistant principals here to speak on behalf of their school and their work that they've done just like the principals who earned that award if you come for it Gary if you want to come forward and we're volunteered Gary will come in Gary started out as a coach a PSC coach became an assistant principal and the work that they've done at Kemp earned them a state award so if you want to
come and share good evening Y'all Gonna help me good evening good evening okay as well you guys know I'm not much of a speaker but um yes I was a PSC coach um and it had a great impact on our building it's been in our building probably I don't know 10 12 years 10 or 12 years has been in our building and it's uh a culture now when students come in our building they know what we do How We Do It um we've decreased referrals suspensions but it's all about the culture PSE creates a culture that you want in your building and we've had in our building for 12 years and we're happy to get that Bronze award again second time we got it the second time we've got it so thank you [Applause] nameless
oh um so the three schools that won the award we have Fairview Elementary did you stand up please we have Kemp Elementary and we also have Valerie Elementary [Applause] what they've done what they've done a set of precedents in our district that our goal moving forward is that all of our um all of our Bronze Award winners will be candidates for the silver award this this year and that all of our buildings will meet the requirements to be bronze winners this coming year our plan our goal is to also have ongoing wide school-wide classroom management professional development development going forward and then individual coaches providing professional development By Request um what we've seen the work that they've done in those three buildings we're hoping to replicate throughout our entire District our goal is to launch
The ovais Bullying prevention program become CPI District trainers right now we have three so we're hoping to launch that and then our continued coaching and supports in the buildings [Applause] are there any questions first off I want to say thank you all um I want to congratulate those schools again for the great work that they've put in um I've heard you speak Mr Armstrong don't try to play Shout with us but well I just want to say thank you I think it's really needed especially in our district with and coming off of covet and the things that we saw pre-coveted and you know things that were exacerbated by the pandemic I think these are the kind of things that are needed so I appreciate that um and I'll kick it off to the board if
there are any questions about board members Dr Goodwin I heard you say that you you guys do coaching with teachers can you just tell me a little bit about what the actual professional skill set is of PSC coaches for them to coach teachers like are they former teachers have they ever been in the classroom is there a skill is there a length of time that you have to do that before you can coach a teacher and then what level of teacher do you guys coach so yes so all of them are former teachers and then they go through a coaching training themselves on how to be a coach so they have classroom experience they've been successful in their classrooms and now they need to learn how to be a coach so then they're trained on
how to coach their colleagues okay and they're they're former teachers in inner city or Dayton or they just come from somewhere else a combination of all of the above okay and for the ones that didn't do inner city schools how are they trained to coach our teachers now that are Inner City Teachers so they go through a similar coaching because coaching is coaching you know you're not trying to be a valuative you're trying to make sure that you're providing teachers with the structure that they need they all learn how to do an observation give feedback and then how to keep encouraging the teachers and tracking their goals to make sure that they're achieving what they need to achieve some of them have been in restorative practices training will continue to do that as we find
there's a need for them to have different training then that's provided to them all right that's all I have thank you Mr Sampson thank you Mr President um wrote a couple things down first let me say it is always a pleasure to hear um positive School climate updates for me personally I have um personal interest in positive School climate um I don't care what president Smith is talking about Mr Armstrong is not a talker he's not a talker I mean I'm not going to put that on him so um I do have a couple questions how many PSC coaches do we currently have nine right now all right and then oh let me say this Mr Vaughn Mr Terrell Terrell Mr Scott uh Mr Grandma y'all's tap game is strong to get the uh y'all's
tap game is strong I've never seen it as strong as that that was great um what um I really how many coaches do we have in the room wow all of us okay all right what round of applause um Dr Burton if you don't mind sure I would like to put a coach or two up to the microphone sure because I want them to ask answer this question okay about what are the challenges and what are the needs okay Ricky Indiana who've been our coaches the longest I think would be good to come up to the microphone answer those questions um I think our challenge is right now is there's only nine of us right um and with the amount of schools that we have we have so many needs in our district um I'm
trained in restorative practices I'm one of the trainers and a lot of what we would love to see is the front-end preventative piece for a lot of our schools we have a lot of things in place that help when something does happen what we'd love to see is if we could have the preventative piece before things happen before things escalate for our teachers and our students because it's all about the kids right so um in a perfect world we would have two schools each to coach at right right now we have three or four so in a perfect world you'd have more coaches right one can wish and hope um I think the need the need there that's that's the biggest need for us as coaches okay um and then I think our biggest goal
always as as working in such a a big beautiful district is that we always look to try to make everything Equitable within a building right we want to make sure that each building is getting what they need and so that we can spend so some buildings need more time from us so one building might need more more days than another building another one building might be really established in their you know PSC because they've had it for a long time and another building might be brand new to it right because they're just establishing their tier one systems um and another building might need more time with tier two and tier three which is are the different levels based on the student needs so all right okay so I want to say thank you again um
being um in the up have an opportunity to work with Mr Armstrong as restorative justice coach I understand exactly the preventative part um also being in a school working with Miss Smith at Fairview I understand um PSC is work because it is a culture shift that requires adults to have a paradigm shift and wants and the young people are the easy part it's just the getting the adults to shift with this new way of thinking and I really want to say I appreciate you all for the work that you do in our buildings and if nobody else knows the work you do I absolutely love what you're doing and I'm gonna see what we can do yeah I'm I can't make any promises but I am going I hear you I hear you and I
appreciate you all so much thank you Mr President thank you Mr Sampson uh I did just have one question with the the shortages that we see sometimes when we have the numbers of our long-term Subs how do they fit in the framework of the coaching and Things That Go On so if principals identify a long term so for any teacher who may need some classroom management strategies then they identify those individuals and the coaches will go into the classroom and help them set up their rules and routines and their structures and their expectations and then once the coaching Series starts which starts this week they are free to attend those coaching sessions we do them in the morning before school for late schools and in the afternoon for schools that start early okay I appreciate
that that was my only question any other questions from the board so the the old term restorative justice is that is that it's restorative practices so it's restorative practices yes okay thank you I would be remiss in not introducing two other people who have been key in helping us Implement PSC in the district and that would be Betsy apolito and Mary Jane Kearns they're from the state support team [Applause] one more question Dr Burton how do we um engage our community and our parents or slash Families how do they get engaged in this positive School climate concept do we have anything in place where we engage Community to assist us with creating this positive School climate do we do anything with the parents and families who are the guardians of our young people like what
do we do for the community so I'll let you because it's on an individual school basis based upon that Community right so I'll let some of the coaches come up and tell you what they've done in their buildings part of being able to win the various Awards is having such engagement okay so I'll let you I'll let them come up and tell Rick if you want to come on up and tell some of the things that we've done in various schools across the district foreign thanks for letting me answer this uh so one of the things that we do all of our PSE teams we work to have parents on the team so I know right now uh Miss Kelly is currently at Belhaven she is transferred from Ballard to Belhaven uh and she has
had a consistent parent on her PSE team this entire year so far so it's important that when we have these teams when we have administrators and we have people with behavioral expertise when we have classroom teachers coaches we also want as many community members as many parents on board so we can get their input as well we want to know what the parents are thinking of these practices of these strategies that we're putting in place all right thank you so much appreciate it thank you Mr President thank you sir are there any other questions from the board yes really um wonderful presentation um if there's so this is this is something that we we talk a lot about but you know I don't have a lot of practical understanding of how this works so it's
really great to get some more information about it um I don't know if there's anything that you would welcome board members to come and observe whether it's like professional development or a coaching session I would love to be invited to that if I could just be a fly on the wall and watch it I think what you guys are doing is really incredible I was gonna ask one of the same questions that board member Samson asked and ask about some of the challenges but I'm grateful that he did that what I would like to ask is when you talk about the work that you do um and you know if anybody wants to jump up and and share what is the success that you're really really proud of like is there anything that anybody would
like to share tonight like this is just incredible I I would love to sit down and have like a two hour long conversation about what you all do but um what about a principal would you like to hear whoever wants to share a success I would love to hear success [Music] together um I think a big win for us at Fairview is that PSC is a is the way that we connect the work that we're doing in building our climate with things like the Ohio improvement process and how we address academic data or any data and also the overlap of that with equity and how we're addressing certain groups of students with an equity lens and I think that's a really critical and you know it's a critical part of the work and it's going
to look different at every single school so the PSC rubric essentially helps us to do that and guides us through that work and that's what's made us successful I agree I think for Valerie for us now for Mrs Kelly because she really was our PSC Guru that was just one of her areas of expertise um I'll kind of predate us back to when we merged and that just began a new blend of public school climate and the Valerie way and the parent buy-in we can have meetings with families and we'll say what is the Valerie way and you know our students know therefore the parents know you know then you're not following so for us our first success was the merger of Meadowdale Elementary and Valerie and being able to take that Valerie way and
make it into one so that's for me is when our success really began and since then we've been able to manage to do it even without Mrs Kelly I just wanted to put that out there thank you so and then I would say for Ricky because we've had him as a coach multiple times and he pushes our team we have a very collaborative team we have parents on the team still have parents on the team just if the parents kind of understand the goal then we have to buy-in so thank you so much [Applause] anything else from the board for Dr Burton or anyone PSE team one of the things the team members wanted me to tell you as well is their active involvement with HR because they participate in all the new teacher orientation
to make sure that teachers are aware of how to structure their classrooms how to set up expectations and things like that Mr Sampson I see you thank you Mr President I do want to go on record and say that if we could Dr Burton if you could show me what projections would be to add to the PSC coaches like what is that expense what is the need if we go with the idea of two buildings per coach block if you could just share that with me I would greatly appreciate it I would be more than happy thank you so much thank you and appreciate you once again Dr Lolly and our next special presentation if you could lead us up yes um before I do that both both presentations tonight are part of the um
ccip in our state uh requirements we we are required to fill out a plan of action uh every school year for our district and our dlts our district leadership teams and our building leadership teams and our and our teacher-based teams all work on achieving those goals and the PSC portion of of this evening relates to the goal about the student attendance student Behavior and the culture of the district so that goal has been addressed tonight and the next goal that's being addressed tonight is the is the goal that's related to academic performance especially in reading and in mathematics that's what's on our state required document and our and that's what we work through with our state support team members our district leadership team building leadership team and our TB T so it's my pleasure to
introduce Rachel Murdoch Chief academic officer for Dayton public all right thank you very much Dr Lali Treasurer Braha Ward our board president Smith and board members thank you for having me this evening so I am going to go through some of our Ohio state test data a glimpse at our report card and then a look at our map data which is the measure that we use to continually monitor progress when I stood before you last year I said and I'll say again that these data points represent thousands of Stories We have thousands of children each one has an individual story so when we capture this data we're capturing um their stories now this year like last year is unique because last year we were back in person for a full year after the pandemic still
struggling but coming out of it so I think what you'll see in the data tonight is evidence of recovery evidence of progress and evidence that there is still much work to be done um so if you take a look at the report card slide this is just an overview of the report card that's presented on the screen right now I won't go through every category but I did want to highlight a few of them the first one I wanted to highlight was the performance index which is um captures our achievement our performance Index this year was a 47 percent that's very close to what we had in 2019 when we were making great progress we had a 47.8 percent then so I do think again evidence of recovery evidence of some renewed progress as we
come out of the pandemic as we had a full year back in the classroom I might also like to point out the progress measure which is our growth we are making progress in growth we're not where we want to be obviously but we are beginning to see that needle go up as well and the same for our early literacy scores much work to be done but we're getting back to the trajectory that we had prior to the pandemic I also wanted to point out on this slide that the Gap closing score is a whole new mathematical configuration so it's not a score that can really be compared to any previous years there are new categories factored into this score so just if you're looking back and forth at previous report cards just know that that
is a different calculation and I wanted to point out that the College and Career Workforce and Military Readiness category is not updated has not uploaded their data so this is an inaccurate score that should be rectified sometime this fall and we can update you when it is but if you're looking at that and thinking of course we should do better we have CTE courses and that's just on ode we're waiting for them to update this for eign so the next slide just captures the Ohio state test proficiency rates for all tested grade levels and subjects again I'm not going to go through every line but I did want to point out a few highlights on this one if you look at that last column the growth between 21 and 22 you see a lot of
green so there was a lot of growth last year when we had our students back in front of us for the whole year if you look at the second last column the growth from 19 to 22 you don't see as much green but you see those numbers shrinking so we do want to celebrate getting back on that trajectory and if you look diagonally as you're looking at the numbers at just some of the cohorts so if you look at the third graders for example from last year from 2021 and then look diagonally to the fourth grade score you'll see that they went from 19.1 percent proficient to 26.1 in reading and they went from 17.5 to 22.2 in math so we are seeing just those cohorts improve um and then finally I would say our
third graders are something to particularly celebrate um you can see in their reading scores that from 2019 to 2022 that we were just negative 0.5 percent off from that 2019 score and in math something to truly celebrate we were up 6.5 from the 2019 score which certainly speaks to our double teaching initiative that we really are getting traction with that initiative then we'll go to the next slide so the next several slides are from the map assessment that's the measure of academic progress this is a test that we administer three times a year so that we can track how well our students are doing over a course of a year teachers can use this data it's very extensive when they plan their lessons so that they are very targeted to very specific groups of students
this test when students take it is adaptive so when a student's taking the test if the student is getting questions wrong the questions become easier if the student's getting a series of questions right the questions become harder and that happens until the student is about 50 getting about half wrong and half right and that's how the score the achievement level is calculated on map when you look at these scores you will also see that it shows the norm and you can see as you look up that the point spread becomes Slimmer so students are expected to grow more when they're younger and then as they know more they grow less and you can see that in those normed scores and these are the reading scores that you're looking at on this first slide um I
would point out um too that the norm score that's where students are going to be close to being proficient on the OST so we do know that those things are showing us how close our students are getting to being likely to be proficient on the OST so we can go to the math and you'll see some similar results if anything we were having just a little more progress between 21 and 22 in math and getting closer to those Norm scores and then we can go to science we just started giving the Science assessment last year it has gotten more reliable over the years and this gives our science teachers more data to work with as they work with their students so we do have just two years of data for science for them to use
and you don't see a gray bar on biology because there are not enough data points at this time for there to be a norm score but we can still use it to measure progress of our students and then next we'll take a look at year to year growth I think this tells um really does tell a story of how we're doing one year to the next now I will point out to you that the blue bar is from the fall of 2020. those tests were not as reliable we had to give those remotely so they were likely to have been inflated which means that the degree of loss for that year was also inflated so that's why you see um like for the second graders the blue is below the bar most likely what you
can also see is you look at those though is that we have had a great deal of growth getting closer to and in some grade levels like third fourth fifth and sixth actually exceeding the projected growth so we're very excited about that and then you'll see the same thing if we look at the reading that year to year growth where we do have some of those grade levels exceeding what their predicted growth was as I said at the beginning we still have a long way to go to make sure all of our students are proficient but we are back on track for making progress and we know what what the work is that needs to be done and that's all I have if you have any questions for me thank you Chief Murdoch I just
want to say I appreciate you bringing this data forward something we talk about a lot is just so many things that go into this like you said of all the stories all the stories that don't exist inside of our buildings that still come to our buildings so I appreciate that and appreciate the work that's being done uh to continue to press forward are there any questions from the board Mr Lacy is it I think it's like house bill 497. uh or something like that where they're it's past the house um and it's before the Senate to um although I I guess it's it's not really active right now the third grade guarantee um but um if if it it truly is just just completely passed then have we thought about how this would affect our
curriculum what we what we started doing several years ago for the third grade guarantee was when we had a student that did not pass the the third grade reading test we went ahead and we moved them into a fourth grade and called that building that called that classroom a multi-age three four and when the student took it and passed in mid-year they had not missed that first half of that fourth grade curriculum so um they they had gotten that fourth grade curriculum but they also as part of the requirement for having them in a multi-age type classroom they had to have intensive intervention so we basically worked through that like many other schools in the around the state of Ohio and avoided retaining a third grader who then could be promoted mid-year and Miss have
missed out on half of the curriculum uh that year so in looking at what our curriculum is we continue to follow what the state requirements are and continue to look at our test data to make sure that it's being implemented appropriately I hope I answered your your question I mean I like to see that that we're we're planning basically thank you thank you Mr Lacy if I could add a couple of things these these fall scores uh it'll be significant in December to see where we are from Fall To December because you always even though you have a fall score you know that there's some summer slide but even in looking at our scores there's not as as an extensive amount of Summer slide as we've had in the past for our younger grades which
is which is positive so the summer interventions that occurred the summer programming that occurred helped avoid that for many of our children but the the real look will be between December of this year and the fall of this year the the August testing when students had returned to school and the other thing I'll point out to the board of education is that our CTE graduation rate is not reflected on this new report card but it is 94.5 percent I believe and this graduation rate as I've been indicated to you before the 78 percent and the 71.5 percent in two years from now I believe it's two years from now this graduation rate will be 85 to 86 percent because of the way that um we were we're finding students that no longer go to Dayton
public when they're freshmen so they no longer count against us because last year we found 151 students that had never been withdrawn from Dayton public schools who counted would count towards the graduation rate four years from now so taking those 151 out will bring that graduation rate up based upon just that that preliminary data because it's based on your freshman class so that's something to look forward to and uh see that happen in the next couple of years thank you Dr Lolly are there any other questions from the board Dr Goodwin yeah if you can come back with me on slide three I just want to make sure I understand some things here these percentages they're out of a hundred percent yes that's correct I I'm not going to fluff It This concerns me a
lot because we don't have anything on this slide over 50 percent so our district is failing this much in proficiency levels I mean what is the plan here and as I look at the last three years which 19 before covet 2021 2022 I I think I'm I saw only one time where we got to a 58 in a high school government like these numbers are alarming I don't understand how people can sit come right now seeing these numbers right here this this many of our students aren't proficient in the core The Core Curriculum of English Math Science and reading I just don't maybe maybe it's not a shock to other people but this is shocking to me to see it like this I agree it's alarming and I do not feel calm inside about this
I feel very much that there is so much work to be done we have started much of that work I do think as I said before seeing that progress with the third graders this year we've implemented intervention blocks into the fourth through sixth grades we're working with Dr Lasley at UD to add some math tutoring for the high school grades we added reading classes seven through ten but we're you're right we're not at 50 in any of these and that is alarming and that is the great work that we need to do so I hear all that I mean I guess my a basic question the the people who are on the front line of this have we talked to them at all about any suggestions that they have of what is preventing them from
like getting our children there we have talked to them and one of the things that we do feel like is most important for our teachers to do is to really use the data and strategically group students so that every student grows and you're not just teaching to the middle so that's something that we have put very much emphasis on we've worked with our teacher leaders to assist in the buildings with helping to group those students and we feel like when teachers begin to really Embrace that we are going to see more movement in the needle is that theory based on assumption or or something that you guys are put I've tried in the past because if it's based on past practices again the the trend isn't going up here and if you if you all
need help I mean I guess this is more not towards you but more towards Dr Lolly here of we need to figure this out I mean it's concerning not one area is even at 50 we have one area at 40 in the 40s and everything else I mean that's a f that's completely that you're not passing it any of these percentages at at any level we're completely felling at every level based on this thing and not use of targeted grouping that's based on Research just like the garage or release model that we've implemented over the last few years and the Marzano framework so we are grounding our practice in research based successful practices I have one final question at what point did you guys abandon research that doesn't work for this District I don't know
that any of the practices that I have mentioned we have seen growth using those practices you're right we're not doing 50 but we have seen growth so we're not going to abandon a practice where we're seeing movement but it doesn't mean that we won't continue to work and add additional practices to improve even more thank you Mr President that's all I have for this thank you Dr Goodwin anyone else yes sir Ms Sampson uh thank you Mr President um what barriers are there that are that we see that are preventing growth as a district what what do we see what are we contributing to the barriers that are preventing the growth that we want to see I think that if you look at the scores if you went back to slide three we have more
we had less growth in our upper grades and our secondary I think one of the big barriers for them especially coming out of the pandemic is the sense of isolation they're not used to being in school we have more absenteeism in those grade levels and those present large barriers absentee in general absenteeism in general presents a barrier and one more question if I may Mr President yes sir you may mention about the grouping of students how how are how is the the large number of long-term Subs affecting our growth um where there's a Content teacher that is able to help our Scholars get over that hump like how are we grouping effectively when we have this large number of individuals who have not necessarily been trained in those content areas we are including all the
long-term Subs in all of the trainings we offer okay our teacher leaders work with them just like they work with the certified staff okay so we do try to give them the same supports so that they can implement the curriculum effectively and we've seen some of our long-term Subs who are really doing a fantastic job they're really committed to the curriculum they especially with our new language arts curriculum they're implementing it with great Fidelity so I think we're going to see some good growth from some of our long-term Subs that's awesome to hear thank you Mr President thank you um I had a couple of questions one what are some of the things that we are doing it may not just be for you Chief Murdock maybe Dr Lolly as well but looking at the
the need for this growth but then also understanding how do we then supplement this education piece um when we talk about tutors and we talk about extra resources how are we connecting that need and putting this data out with parents to show them the the real thing about you know this is a real piece because I know sometimes we can say hey your child needs extra help in math your child needs X how are we then you know getting into when we talk about um our parent groups at schools you know letting ours is something we are allowed or able to let our parent groups present this data if somebody came presented uh to a PTA or something like how are we getting that putting that out through parent square and things to put out
that and then also supplement it with extra helps extra resources extra things that we can give out there because I think that's one of the things is that internally people know where these scores are but that conversation isn't happening to a place where we're then saying okay this is a they need the same way we talked about the need for study tables for all of our athletes is an emergency piece how are we what are some of the things that we can do to really come in and add more strength to the to this need for growth for their data so they do share with parents at that time I know that doesn't reach everyone but they do share the data with parents at that time I can't speak to what's going on on parents
where I would have to get back to you on that as far as data goes all the buildings also have conferences twice a year and they are able to share individual student data with parents that come to the conferences um and we are still just trying to put those interventions in place another one that I did not mention is I said we have the intervention Block in grades four through six but we're also going to be adding tutors through a blue Meridian grant for that so we continue to add supports as much as possible and then to follow up with the the tutoring and things like that that are happening and this is another conjoined piece shot Auto connects are we offering transportation to students that are staying after for tutoring this tutoring will actually
happen during the school day um because we're going to maximize the time we have yes so it'll happen during this holiday during their intervention blocks they'll either be using my player's success maker which are our intervention online tools and then the teachers and we have multiple teachers in those blocks we'll pull small groups of students they'll use the map data to do that on the map data it's what's called a learning Continuum and you can see what the students are ready to learn so they'll pull the data they'll pull small groups based on what they're ready to learn and work with them at that time and the tutors will support that work okay and then do we have currently any kind of after school interventions for students yes we have multiple neighborhood school programs they've
been here to present before we've seen lots of them on the board agenda recently right that also support this work so with that and then the for schools that aren't neighborhood schools do we offer transportation for the non-neighborhood schools we do we do not because there aren't organized uh tutoring programs there in those particular buildings we do offer uh transportation to the neighborhood School centers okay then lastly then probably for you Dr Lawley what are what is needed then to to kind of organize those after-school tutoring programs at the at those schools to to organize those we would need to have uh teachers that were willing to stay after school and and tutor we would need to have transportation provided for them and uh basically just the the same kinds of materials that we're using
with the neighborhood School centers which is a which is a replication of what we already use what the what the research says about tutoring is that if you're not doing the same sorts of things that you're doing in your classroom in a tutoring module that the tutoring is basically an effective in confusing to students at times because it doesn't follow the same language it doesn't use the same methodology that you're using in your classroom so the reason that we're doing in in-house high dosage tutoring during the school day is because we want it to be the tutoring that the teachers are overseeing right then and there so it's it's important that if we put new tutoring programs in after school that those be our teachers or they work with us on making sure that they're
using the same materials and and software that we use I appreciate that any other questions from the board Miss wiganye Chief Murdoch for this information tonight I appreciate you I do you know I know these numbers are alarming and they make my heart beat quickly I think that we all have to continually remind ourselves of as we look at some of these reports that are in front of us that you know we serve a large population of families and students that fall well below the poverty line and that you know when we think we want our parents to be able to help these students that we really have to do a little more outward work there helping our parents help our students because these learning conditions aren't just a result of this young human these
are these are these are conditions that have existed and until we as a district begin to embody a better model of addressing those deep family issues and challenges and wrapping those needs into our services I think we'll really begin to make impact and as we begin as we continue to explore curriculum and opportunity around these things and you are all the professionals I would really love us to take our lens off and expand on that I share with Miss Kid last week I think it was a Sunday a week ago there was some wonderful articles in the New York Times of some of the best practices that have come out of covid during after education our dual teaching model may have been a model of that but some of the most successful data has come
from having students in classrooms where they develop deeper relationships with teachers for a period of one to three years whereby a teacher in a community can get to those Services more deeply so we can begin so so let's take our lens off and start looking at things bigger so thank you that's all I have to say but I really appreciate the work and I appreciate your time thank you thank you thank you Mr Sampson thank you Mr President uh Chief Murdoch I'm if I may ask um a request um listening to the dialogue between you and president Smith and Dr Lottery is there a way to get the data that shows OST and map scores for nsc's compared to the other non-nscs i s I heard about the tutoring the extra stuff that is nsc's
and I want to see if the data supports these is there a difference with the NSC concept versus the non-nsc because if there is if those are one of the things that are working we need to figure out a way how to get those added resources in non-nscs does that make sense yeah so the neighborhood yeah so if if there's data that shows the scores for all nsc's separate from the non-nscs I I really am interested to see what those days you would like to see it like at a building level like the children who participated in the program compared to the ones who did not participate in the neighborhood School Center and it doesn't have to be that deep just just by school so that's our we do have that data and you I
mean it's on the Ohio report card yes we have that data perfect thank you so much thank you Mr President thank you anyone else hmm if not I want to thank you for that presentation thank you next next do we have any bargaining units come to speak my comments I wanted to uh agree with President Smith because I had the privilege and honor of being in many half-time locker rooms with Mr Armstrong and he gave very in-depth motivational speeches that I don't have the opportunity to share with you tonight however I want to attest that when given the opportunity Gary is one fine speaker he president Smith vice president reinert board members superintendent Lolly Treasurer Braha DPS families staff good evening my name is Neil Mahoney and I am the President of the Dayton Education
Association I have spoken to the board about our hard-working dedicated professional members of the DEA and the difference they make every day in the lives of the students of Dayton public schools I've spoken to the board about the struggles that these same hard-working professional DEA members have with the overwhelming workload created by the unfilled vacancies and ongoing resignations I reminded the board about the 10-day strike notice that was given the last time that we had stalled contract negotiations yet here we are again no closer to a settled contract ongoing resignations and vacancies that are still not filled our members who every day strive to provide the best education possible to the students of Dayton public schools are frustrated and losing faith they're being told to expect a larger workload than the one that already overwhelms
them now their plan time which is used to better serve their students is being taken away to cover positions not currently filled many teachers report only receiving one to two plan periods per week there's results in teachers basically teaching Bell to Bell each day with no break week after week teachers are worn out their physical health and well-being is being impacted and they're seeking relief I know I've heard this board ask why we are losing so many teachers and if exit interviews are being done I haven't seen those interviews but from the letters and conversations that I've had with those teachers who have left the district or are currently contemplating leaving there seems to be a common theme teachers are not leaving education they're just leaving this District we didn't just lose first or second
year teachers we lost many experienced teachers teachers who had built relationships with students and their families teachers who had worked within their schools and the community to better serve their students and teachers who fought for the schools our students deserve the reasons shared with me for their leaving include overwhelming workload loss of planning time their safety and the safety of their students due to the number of fights that are seen every day class sizes that are too large lack of support given to teachers especially our new teachers and long-term Subs and the continual asks of more and more from them each and every day at some point this needs to end the over 900 members of the DEA stand United and committed to recruiting and retaining the best teachers for our students we are committed
to bargaining for the learning conditions Dayton students and their families need to succeed however we also realize the stress that is being placed on our members and their families as we work without a new contract and its effect on workplace morale and the faith that a new contract with the district will be attained thank you and I have any questions no thank you appreciate you Mr Mahoney any other bargaining units that wish to speak Madam treasure do we have anybody registered from the community to speak all right Felicia as Miss Hills coming forward just want to remind everybody limit your remarks to three minutes address the board as a whole through the president and not individual board members if you have any materials to distribute please hand them to the treasurer and then when called
upon identify yourself and state your name and address please [Music] graduate so I'm a product of Dayton public schools the reason why I'm coming here today is the president vice presidents who award Dr Loudoun is to congratulate a great hire Tara Boone was selected as our health Services director she is a product of Dayton public she loves our students and she went to bat even when she was not asked so I just wanted to say thank you I appreciate it because School nurses are more than just Band-Aids and bandages the reports that's required the things that we do we wash clothes at Westwood to ensure our students stay in their seats instead of going home because we understand the best place for a student is in the classroom so thank you so much and that's
the reason why I wanted to come and give a congratulations and a Kudos and a shout out to the board and Dr Lolly and also Chief Burton for being able to hire a great candidate thank you so much are there any questions thank you so much thank you for the work you do any other uh speakers Madam Treasurer Aaron Menchaca Aaron Manchaca I don't think they're here okay Debbie Horton Debbie Horton no ma'am Allen a lot more thank you I've been waiting on this moment okay first my name is Alan Lattimore senior proud graduate of Colonel white High School uh 724 kennel work uh and I am a Collegiate athlete scholarship athlete so just give you some background on where I come from and I'm actually anomaly because actually uh I came from outside of
the district I brought my son from Chaminade and I brought him over to Thursday to Dayton Public District because I was helping elect some of you guys up there and I wanted to be sure that I come here and hold you accountable all right um first I just want to basically speak on Sports um starting I was able to check out the meeting last week and I just had a couple concerns um before even seeing that but um a lot of things we like as far as state public schools with our counterparts as far as in the Suburban districts is that um from a social media presence we're lacking there from a uh statistical Department we're lacking here um we don't have a system in place to to report our kids statistics and it's it's
I'm not sure what happened to it or if we ever have one but if if not can we go back to getting one um games are like uh or like tests and basically your stats are like your transcript uh coaches would like to see your statistics when you're when you have a good game I mean they may not see be able to see your game but one thing they can do is we can go to a website and then they can check out statistics that would be great um so we can take care of that um schedule um if we can schedule teams within our you know whatever we have to offer I mean uh seeing 60 to zero is is not helpful in any way um I'm not certain uh what we're trying to
get after um it's just it's it's a black eye and it's a sword for uh the district and kids will not want to come over to lose like that oh sure um technology wise is it possible that we can get the same technology as the other schools where they are able to have iPads on the sideline and it's a complete competitive advantage in order to have to make in-game adjustment as opposed to wait until after I mean that's partly reason that a lot of Esports are the way they are because we're playing against teams that can adjust to us on the Fly and we're basically we're blind up here uh is it possible that we can also work with more local Peewee teams I understand we have to start we have to get a foundation
within Dayton public schools I mean nobody's willingly coming over to date Public Schools most of the kids they've got are forcing over here I mean if you live in a district and of course to go here um but if you can work with some of those local Peewee teams then you can start building up your middle schools and start filtering more kids into your high schools I mean it's it's tough to look out there and I can only speak with Thurgood but I know a lot of teams are the same but a lot of the teams we play have more kids on the sideline than we have on the playing field that we have available to play I would say and it's just I mean it's I mean it's a numbers game I mean just
like Thurgood we lost two starters our very first game of the year and that's set us back tremendously I mean unfortunately injuries are part of this game so we need to uh make sure we address that lastly my son is a uh he's a tremendous athlete but he um he's a tremendous track athlete as well and I appreciate the the work you guys did on the practice fields but there is no jump pit at Thurgood uh my son qualified for regionals last year he was only able to practice once every two weeks um so I understand if you can't put a jump pit if they're good can you give him access to one I mean he's the state level athlete and he doesn't have the tools he needs in order to compete uh other than
that Ali I'm good thank you thank you Mr Lattimore Jamie Ryan I do not see Miss Ryan today okay Mr Hugh Mr you good evening I met uh our great superintendent over at Cleveland Elementary the other day and Cleveland is a very good school and their third grades graders are doing great I've been to the girls school they have two perfect first grades and I've been to Eastmont and they have an excellent fifth grade I was going to have a different speech tonight but I changed it I'm going to talk a little bit about positive School climate I think it's very important I think positive School climate is better than yelling or suspending a student from school Mr Armstrong who is left now they have an excellent positive School climate it's tremendous it works I've
been there to see it I'm happy about Valerie because I taught at the former School Meadowdale for 30 years and they have the best gym teacher Willie Bailey and their principal meets every car that comes in there because most their students are picked up and driven to school by their parents and she knows everybody's car and Fairview I'm proud of that school because the best student I ever taught as a substitute in Dayton public schools went to Fairview and now he's at Stivers and he was an outstanding student I'm glad tonight to hear a little bit about the testing because I don't understand it I've been out of the uh as a regular teacher for at least 11 years but what I want to know is what skills I could be teaching if I get
into a classroom and I need to teach something else I want to know what's the most important thing those students need to learn the one thing I know as a teacher reading is your most important subject reading is it if every child can read they can be successful in life and reading is English social studies science and writing stories so they must be able to do that and ma'am I will tell you this I will volunteer to do tutor I'll give you my number you call me up I've got every every subject you can imagine in my house I can come and help and I will do it for free okay so thank you for listening God bless you and let's have a good couple weeks coming up here thank you Mr you you're welcome
this concludes tonight's hearing of the public thank you madam treasurer next pursuant to section 121.22 G2 the Ohio Revised Code I moved at this board going to Executive session this meeting is being held to confer with an attorney involving pending or eminent Court action and to prepare for a review negotiation with employees regarding their compensation or other terms and conditions of their employment do I have a second second any questions on the motion may we have a vote president Smith yes Miss reinert yes Mr Samson yes Miss swigani yes Dr Phuket is not here Dr Goodwin yes Mr Lacy yes six yeses foreign Blackford future Skyline leader at an opponent CTC in the media arts pathway did you know the Dayton public schools nutrition services department feeds more than 8 000 lunches each day the

I'm Marianne Blackford and that's in case you missed it and remember you learn more failure than you ever do in success quote by Jay-Z [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] ersfield I'm the cybers tennis coach tennis is not a very well known sport in the district in fact cybers is the only school that has a tennis team so I think it's nice for the school to highlight a sport that really is pretty popular it's a lifelong Sport and hopefully build interest in the sport the girls know that their academics and their magnet here at cybers comes first these girls balance their lives well they're very disciplined and you can see that in
their work ethic on the court and also in the classroom I'm proud of the fact that we have the highest GPA overall we had the highest for the boys last spring it's just an expectation that I don't want to say just me as a coach but the girls have the girls want to perform their best we definitely emphasize as like a priority that we do have to get our schoolwork done I have been able to find a nice balance the coach and the whole team has been very supportive of me they have been very understanding and knowing that my grades are also something that I need to take care of it's pretty important especially in my family you take academic is very seriously I'm pretty sure this is probably the best we've done in a
long time and I'm really proud of myself and everybody else too they're the first ones to congratulate any student when we're practicing they're the first ones to tell them a good job great shot I've had numerous comments from our competitors the schools that we play from the coaches saying your girls are always so nice and that says a lot about the girls it's really fun playing with Kaylee it's really nice to it it is it's fun it's fun to just be like okay we gotta do this we gotta do that but it's also a good thing to support each other especially if we have like a bad server or a bad return it's like it's okay we work on the next one folks on the next point and it's it's just nice and support I
think it's amazing that we were selected as the team of the month usually attendance at our school doesn't get as much recognition as the other big sports like soccer or basketball so it's really nice to know that we finally been like acknowledged and known that we're here and we're making our stance at Stivers I didn't know we were the first one I didn't know we were the first that's cool that's cool this is like a thing I always do I didn't know I didn't know we were the first at like the first one but that's cool that were special and we are smart yeah [Music] hello I'm Amaria was and we're here at Fairview Elementary School interviewing the student of the month amima and Mima has assisted teachers in translating for various students around school
she always helps with the smile and is very patient she's helpful in the classroom even without anyone asking she's the class messenger and handles the job well she's at school every day and in uniform she has kinds of others and always respectful tell us your name and who you are my name is okay congratulations on being a student of the month thank you tell me how you started helping teachers by translating for students I was in fourth grade um there was this case this kid doesn't know English and my teachers say can you go help him and I said yeah because I'm in English in Swahili at the same time okay what languages do you speak kinyawanda English Swahili and a lot more okay what's your primary language Swahili okay tell me about your family
my I have four sisters and three brothers my dad is from Uganda and my mom's from my dad my mom's from Congo and I have more family Africa but they're about to come this week are you friends Uganda too when did you come to the United States I cannot remember was like five about five okay okay how do you feel about being named student of the month great what was your first reaction I was I was happy and scared because I'd be nervous okay what do you like about being a day and public school student they took me in a group that started teaching me how to say English because I didn't know how to speak English and they start teaching me how to read which I'm kind of good at now what do you
want to be when you get older a dancer yeah so what kind of dancer any dancer yeah so what kind of dancing do you do now King African okay [Music] I just want to encourage our students to come to school and be okay with who you are whoever you are you are accepted and we love you and we look forward to having you here the main words of encouragement I have for students whether you're moving to a new school or a new grade is to be yourself be who you are and don't give up I'm really excited to meet our new middle school students who are coming to seventh grade middle school is an interesting and weird world but we are ready for you and we can't wait to help you prepare in the next
two years for high school one I'm excited about our students families and staff returning this year to continue to work to restart it last year secondly I'm excited about the partnership that we've created and the journey we're about to embark on hello Dayton public schools you are in the right place at the right time doing the right thing so be informed Be Inspired be reflective but yet be relevant be thankful and be thoughtful but above all be you looking forward to having a great and exciting school year [Music] my name is John L Foster I'm a math teacher here at ponus CTC and I'd like to say I am DPS I enjoy working with my students helping them to to learn what they need to learn for today I enjoy the interaction I enjoy the
the that road of Discovery along with the students help us to get from point A to point B in terms of increasing their knowledge and also increasing their wisdom as well concerning mathematics superintendent Lolly and my math supervisor Dr Kurt and of course my wife and of course my colleagues my math colleagues and just my colleges in general they give them encouragement we just we just like a big fan we just encourage each other I believe DPS is a good place for anyone to start their career because we have children who are in need of having good men to good leaders good teachers who are willing to show them love to help them to grow because um they might not get that entirely at home um but uh but this will be a second family
too though to get that love and get the knowledge and get the education of the good education that they need to have to to go and prosper in this in this world of ours we are having our groundbreaking ceremony for Welcome Stadium project and you know right now we're going to have some amazing things happening here more importantly we are going to have all our student athletes been able to use the facility so our Middle School their football games are over here even our high schools our soccer games are played here we have many community members that come through here 5Ks they run around the building and they run inside the building at some point we want to bring concerts here too we were attentional with our lighting so it's not just white lights but
we have color lights too so the upgrades on our Wi-Fi so that you know people can use the their electronic devices and when UD come here they're not having issues or any other colleges that may want to use it we also were attention on with the track we're making sure we put our College lines on there too it's definitely going to be a multi-purpose facility for sure I think the most exciting thing is just the feel you get when you talk to people about it from talking to kids to talking to our elders they're all excited about this there's so many pieces there's people who are you know they want to come down and and buy a shirt from the spirit shop before a gamer there's people who want to come out and they spent
time looking at some of the trophies and old pictures there's people the kids are like I can't wait to run on that track and get out on that field so just knowing that we're doing so much that people are just excited about different pieces I think that's what makes me excited is just seeing the excitement in people's faces it's going to be a magnificent facility it's going to be somewhere they can come out and enjoy and be their best and I think our community should be excited for what it can bring to not only our students but for the city and the region as far as getting some activities here and being a community space that everybody can enjoy the thing that I'm most excited about is just the actual opportunity for our students to
play on a high quality field I come to a lot of football games I come to soccer games here ban competitions whenever they're outside groups that come in also occur here and just to have a place that our students are proud of a place that they'll enjoy playing on because this is a Legacy Stadium I mean 1949 was when this was built originally and while it's in okay Condition it's been kept up as much as you can it's time for a resurfacing or refacing a revisioning of what this should look like and that's what's happening right now I think that we should all be excited for this upcoming change because it's a reality now we've talked about it for a few years here whenever I've been the superintendent but it's a reality now and I
know other people have talked about it for years and years and years it's reality today it's the beginning foreign ition to work program for young adults with disabilities it is a unique program that is one school year in length during that time the students will participate in three targeted internships based on their interests and strengths they will acquire competitive marketable and transferable skills through their internships some of the duties that they might participate in are cleaning assisting patients and staff delivering supplies transporting patients cooking fixing things throughout the hospital and then through these tasks they learn valuable life skills such as how to handle constructive criticism teamwork appropriate communication for the workplace critical thinking if a student is committed to finding competitive employment they will have a job when they are completed with this program
we are with them every step of the way the Dayton Public School District has 16 thriving elementary schools serving preschool students as young as three and a half years old through sixth grade hearing and dedicated teachers and staff are determined to help all students succeed academically individualized attention is critical to academic success DPS elementary schools follow a double teaching model in first through third grade having two teachers per classroom allows for class size reduction with one teacher focusing on math and one on literacy this allows students to receive more one-on-one attention to help them Excel academically in addition to traditional academic subjects students of all grade levels learn to be problem solvers team players and solution oriented thinkers through stem experiences career experiences begin in kindergarten to introduce students to a variety of career paths
paths and opportunities art physical education and music classes are also part of a student's well-rounded educational experience music classes are designed to give students hands-on experience and make them excited to participate and learn many elementary schools also provide after-school programs and Family Resource coordinators to connect families to any Services they may need in addition all DPS preschools are free and rated 5 Stars by the Ohio Department of Education by choosing Dayton public schools you are choosing to give your student an opportunity to learn grow and Achieve learn more and enroll today at daytonpublic.com [Music] my day begins with students when I greet them at the front door at 8 15. and then I go to welcome them and help them get out of cars greet the students at that time I kind of touch base
with students just to see how they're doing and if there's anything that I can perceive that may need to happen with them or supports that I might need to give them or prepare for them and then I always do morning announcements that's something that I started because I think it's important for students to be greeted in the morning we do the Pledge of Allegiance and then I always say the vision and mission of East one Elementary so we can get ourselves focused and organized for the day and know what our purpose is and why we're here both staff students and administration as a building administrator it is critical and very important that you make yourself visible so that parents see you interacting with them and there's their kids is very critical that they know that
if you are there for them providing support showing them that you do care greeting them every morning saying hello because that's a very important part of the job my job as an administrator is to work with the staff to provide everything the student may need during their day I mean to move them forward and help them grow academically and also as a person you know we educate the whole child you know their intellect their social emotional learning it's all critical and so children come to us and our job is to help them understand school and love school not only for the day or the year but also for a lifetime it is critical for principals to have positive relationships with their students I mean it gives them a sense of significance a sense of belonging
a sense of Pride that they know who you are you know who they are it motivates them empowers them to want to do well so when they see you and you're giving them words of wisdom they want to please so as a building administrator those relationships are very important what I love most about DPS is the opportunities that we are providing for our students whether it be academic Sports all of the extracurricular things that we're providing for our students DPS seems to be on the right track and engaging what our students need what our needs are what the needs are and providing for those needs so I really enjoy being a principal it is of all of the things that I've done in Education throughout my career I've been a math teacher I've been a
coach an instructional coach I've been an athletic coach I've been an assistant principal and now a principal and I really enjoy being a principal because one of the things that I feel is that I have an opportunity to really see their individual growth but also then see them grow as a group I enjoy working with Dayton public schools because it is a nice size School District you really get to know not just the teachers but the families the the students and the Really your school Community I've been able to work with several families through multiple children and it's just really nice to have that parental contact and and to really get to know our parents and and work with them and their families to help our students be successful foreign I was born in Diamond
Missouri my birthday is January 1st 1864. I was an inventor of peanut butter I've never been married and no children's I've passed away January 5th 1984 due to anemia I'm Jamarion Jeffrey I attend college Elementary School I'm in the sixth grade who won my George Washington Carver everything we're teaching in music and Dayton public schools goes towards the whole child so we're helping people not kids not just be better musicians but be just better people the skills we're teaching really go to increase literacy with our early Learners we are you know just teaching how to focus how to learn the actual ability to learn new skills whether it's literacy math social studies music art PE really any of those I think this is awesome up the crowd today amazed me I didn't know how many
people would show up the children showed up and then their parents showed up and some of them even came up and said thank you for doing this so this is our first Adventure out in public since coven so we are thrilled that we can stand here and present this we have an incredibly talented group of kids here in Dayton public schools and today is just a great chance to celebrate those talents that those kids have my name is John Houston and I teach biology at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School with Dayton public schools I've thought a lot about why a young teacher would want to choose to work at DPS and I think you know Dayton has such a rich history of successful people and a lot of creativity and there's a great spirit in
the city of Dayton what I enjoy most about my job at DPS I really enjoy working with the students I like seeing how our students grow as people what really resonates with me is every time you look across a room you don't know who the people you see could be the next Doctor the next lawyer you know I envisioned myself going to the hospital one day and having one of these people working on me or having one of these students be an attorney that I may have to hire at some point you know they're just they're they're going to be part of tomorrow and they're really thriving in this High School environment that we've created we have so many students that just seem on the edge of success and so if you come to Dayton
and you teach in Dayton you can really you can really help someone find that dream and find that path you have so many young people with tremendous skill and creativity that just don't know how to how to project themselves or how to to bring that forward they don't know what they have and so there's no better place to do that than right here in Dayton foreign so in Dayton public schools we're really happy to have Project Lead the Way which is sort of a nationwide stem program they've got a whole bunch of different stem classes and our goal we call it Gateway it's a gateway to high school right so we're trying to get kids excited and interested in these different stem areas right whether it's robotics or engineering or whatever it is and it
doesn't matter exactly what they're doing here they're learning those skills that you that you talked about the 21st century skills right teamwork collaboration problem solving so we're using a lot of technology that is good for them to learn but the real skills that they're getting is that problem solving and that collaboration because the technology is going to change right and the key is for them to learn learn those skills my favorite part is when the students take ownership the other day we were doing robots and a girl who always says I can't do it I can't do it said Miss Dobbs look I did that I did that I made that robot go so that that was kind of Priceless and I liked them seeing the AHA moments when they figure out something especially the
girls when the girls that you know aren't really into stem as much as the boys are and when they get their robots working and they take ownership and pride in what they're doing and they're excited about it that's really special to me foreign hofacker with community behavioral health services at Dayton Children's hospital today we're going to be talking about mental wellness and how it's being affected right now there's a lot of challenges in general with covid the illness itself restrictions quarantine disruptions in school a lot of our kids have been in school for a year or two years at this point and reduced tolerance tolerance for socialization it's been a while since we've had to be in large groups there's a lot of new rules and a lot of changes at home So today we're
going to talk about fears and worries and helping your child manage their fears and worries most children experience some level of fear or worry and it impacts every child differently we're hoping to be able to help you recognize them and your child and how they might impact them and how to help them feel more confident and empowered some common childhood fears and worries are being hit by a car getting lost being afraid of the dark storms imaginary creatures such as monsters or certain fears of animals such as dogs spiders or snakes or Birds older kids have a little bit different Affairs they may be concerned about violence family issues family approval or being cool with their friends and now especially covid being sick hospitals and doctors offices may be scary to them some examples of
how fears and worries might present in your child are stomach aches headaches complaining of not feeling well they may be struggling to sleep they may not want to go places or leave home or be without you as the parent they may be avoiding certain situations that they used to enjoy they might ask a lot of questions on a specific topic some children struggle with acting out such as increase in behaviors or talking back goofing off some children struggle with acting in Behavior such as withdrawing from friends or family or self-harm and why do our children have worries some children are just more likely to develop them than others oftentimes this can come through an experience such as walking by an aggressive dog that is barking loudly or seeing the storm destruction from the 2019 tornadoes
other times this can come from witnessing another person's reaction to a fear such as a sibling who is scared of a animal and seeing their fear when talking about that animal can rub off on them why address them now it could be impairing their ability to function in school such as failing classes or skipping classes refusing to go to school at all could impair their social lives withdrawing from friends or their favorite activities Sports they used to like you can also overtake them if they're not addressed their fears may be irrational And discussing generalizations such as all storms destroy houses or all dog dogs bite which can really impact them from experiencing life and this can provide you the opportunity to provide support to them and teach them about their fears so what can you
do talk to your child about their worries share your experiences relating to what they're afraid about normalize worry and share things that you might be fearful of or that you worry about set examples for them of how to manage their fears and worries teach them coping strategies such as breathing when they're overwhelmed learning how to relax imagination to take their mind off of what they're afraid of self-talk to calm themselves down or to seek support if they feel that they're overwhelmed helping them to gradually face their fears such as if they're afraid of dogs maybe meet some friendly dogs walk by some dogs behind fences that aren't being aggressive or take a class to learn how to interact with animals remain calm when they are scared support them facing things they cannot avoid such as
doctors appointments and praise them for facing their fears thank you so much for taking the time to invest in your child remember that fears and worries are normal for both adults and for kids just be mindful of how their fear or worry may be impacting their daily functioning such as school or interacting with families and friends if they're avoiding certain situations be supportive setting an example for them of how to overcome fears and normalizing having fears and worries come up with a plan with your child on how to tackle those fears and worries and you guys can conquer anything thank you thank you foreign Middleton two tall Winston and we're with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters here at Belmont High School [Music] foreign we just want to thank Dayton public schools for having us out
here come on now who am I I raced horses for money I have four gold medals my nickname is Buckeye bullet I ran German made shoes who am I Jesse Owens and I am Dante Foster goes to Kemp Elementary fifth grade students in grades four through eight across the district are competing in Dayton public schools math Olympics this is an annual event that takes place where students have three competitions a battle of the brains competition and then there's a critical thinking and collaboration challenge where this year students are trying to break out of a breakout edu box they're applying all their skills from quarters one two and three to work collaboratively as a team and crack some codes through mathematical puzzles and then there's also a design challenge where students this year have designed their
dream home and on the day of their competition they're presented with a Twist from the judges and they have to apply that twist given the mathematical parameters to their design and then defend their reasoning in an interview process at the end today's events are preparing the students for future careers and goals because they are really trying to strategize together they have to lean on one another to determine the best way to get to their common goal Seymour problem solving are huge components of today's competitions they are actually one of the categories that they are scored in is their ability to work as a team so they have to learn to effectively communicate with one another in order to be successful on today's challenges particularly the um the CTC challenge the breakout box they have been
strategizing together for months as they practiced as a team with their building math Olympics coaches the goal is for them to increase their ability to problem solve and collaborate and think critically and really learn that Math is Fun foreign erow I'm senior director of school programs for Save the Music Foundation we're a non-profit organization dedicated to helping students schools and communities all around America reach their full potential through the power of making music save the music is very fortunate to have strong Partnerships with our manufacturers and in Dayton we purchased con Summer band instruments for the three middle schools this year consolmer in in turn kind of to add some support above and beyond brought Nikki Smith Jr the 2020 Grammy music educator award recipient to Dayton so we have spent the last two days
in all three middle schools where Mickey has worked Hands-On with the students really establishing kind of fundamentals reinforcing proper posture and breathing and making a good sound on their horns here in Dayton we've laid a foundation to support the K-8 school so all of the students in elementary school having access to high quality musical instruments to make music in school every week and the middle school students who are picking up a trumpet or a trombone for the first time have a high quality instrument to reach their full potential so with a superintendent like Dr Lolly who was a former music educator herself really prioritizes Arts and Music education and has made huge investments from her role at the district to ensure these programs will be successful and sustained for years to come with this instance
you know my focus is teaching the music but it's also to show them that they're loved they're valued and they're wanted and that there is so much promise inside of them we have to show our kids now more than ever how much they met my time here in Dayton public schools has been nothing short of amazing I love the energy I love the the the enthusiasm of the students it was such it was so refreshing to come to a place where the kids really appreciate the opportunities that they're being given and this is something I won't soon forget and I want to tell those kids that may be watching and all those that are connected with this institution that what you do matters more than what you realize and to keep on going and make
those next steps the best steps and the next sounds the best sounds if we catch them right in Kinder and first grade we can do a lot of good work hi my name is Dr Nikki I am an educator I work with teachers and kids around the country and I write a lot of books I've been working in classrooms doing guided math as well as looking at energizers because there's so much research that says kindergarten first grade all of that math is foundational to reading and the math there's long-term studies that look at what kids were doing in kindergarten with math it's so important for kids to build number sense and understand how to play with numbers especially at an early age so that they understand that math is about thinking not just getting answers
I'm Dr Allison mellow and I'm a former assistant superintendent former math specialist classroom teacher and curriculum director and now I'm a full-time math consultant I'm really excited to be in Dayton public schools and working with the classroom teachers showing them some different routines to get kids excited about learning math going into the schools I see teachers that are enthusiastic that are ready to learn that are already doing wonderful things and that are trying to improve their practice so my time here at Dayton public has been wonderful because I love working with teachers and students the Dayton Public School District has five middle schools that prepare students for high school and Beyond Edwin Joel Brown Wright brothers and wagaman are Standalone middle schools while Belmont and stiver School for the Arts are both middle and high
schools a focus on continued academic Excellence is present in all middle schools in addition to their Standard English language arts classes all students take a reading course designed to ensure they leave middle school with the Mastery they need to excel in high school in addition to traditional subjects Project Lead the Way courses are available to middle school students who want to explore stem Concepts while also learning valuable life skills classes like design and modeling Medical detectives and Automation and Robotics introduce students to engineering design the medical field and more Project Lead the Way courses are designed to teach students how to be problem solvers and critical thinkers while engaging in Hands-On projects in DPS middle schools career exploration experiences continue with an emphasis on how students can form a path to their goals students spend
time learning about career opportunities and the Career Technical education Pathways offered in DPS high schools because it is important for middle school students to consider which one would be the best fit for them all middle schools have caring dedicated teachers and staff along with guidance counselors to help students pick the best classes and high schools for their needs by choosing DPS middle schools you are choosing to set your student up for academic and lifelong success learn more and enroll today at daytonpublic.com I was just overwhelmed by the number of people who came out here today to welcome us and the number of students who have already applied to Central State University to receive the free tuition their first year at Central State University our goal is to make sure that we're reaching out to our
local schools and certain schools like Paul Lawrence Dunbar uh principal Henry who is here as a graduate of Central State University and we wanted to make sure that we're providing as much access for those students as possible and we know that the cost of an education has increased Central State University is one of the most affordable institutions in the country and we know that many students are first generation many of them come from lower social economic backgrounds and we want to make sure that we're providing that access with this free tuition I feel very excited you know it's a great opportunity it's really motivational as far as you know going to school and you know because some children might not even applying for college you know going known that you might go for free that
right there just motivates you to do well and you know do better especially when they stated that it would be over the years to come you could still you know go to college for free that's a possible for ride free college that right there is an amazing opportunity once in a lifetime opportunity so you know it motivates me to go to Central State and motivate me to keep my grades up you know and stay on top of everything so I can continue to get that free college the beautiful thing about it is we had a number of students after they heard these things that stuck around because they wanted to apply and just seeing how many kids come out of Dayton public schools right now that are wanting to move on whether it be College
whether it be military whether it be a trade but we want to make sure our students are you know primed for success in life so that's our long-term goal here at Dayton public schools is to make sure that when we have these kind of things it's it's almost a unexpected thing okay let the record show the board of education at Dayton city school district is just completed an executive session during which it met in confirmed with an attorney involving pending or imminent Court action and prepare for and reviewed negotiations with employees regarding their compensation or other terms and conditions of their employment may have a second to return to our business meeting moving second aren't any questions on the motion if not may we have a vote president Smith yes try not yes Mr Simpson
yes sweet Kenny yes yeah Dr Pickett is not here Dr Goodwin yes Mr Lacy yes six yeses we will turn to our meeting now Dr Lolly your recommendations I'd like to recommend the approval of the human resources agenda as listed on the uh board minutes a move to accept superintendent recommendation a do I have a second second it's been moving second do we have any questions on the motion Dr Goodwin yes I just wanted to follow up from last week I see we have several study coordinator positions on here where are we at now we're feeling our our study coordinator positions at both the middle school and high school I'll ask Stacy Maney to come forward good evening I do have an update on that study table coordinators we have hired and you'll see several
on the agenda 19 positions filled that leaves nine remaining vacancies but interviews are ongoing and so we're hoping to have those filled shortly but nine enough in the whole district and 19 failed so far okay thank you on that one and I also see I did ask about an update on our winter sports athletic coaches and you guys have an update on that correct I do yes there are seven winner coaching positions across all secondary schools that are still vacant all others have been filled two of the seven are at high schools the other five are middle schools and we're working to fill those as as quickly as possible okay and then I see here that there is a opponents is having a swimming coach this year for the schools that don't have that are
we going to be able to offer those kids to be able to participate with these coaches and if so how so my understanding is that Athletics has been in touch with buildings about participation and so where there are schools that can sustain or build a team or program and there's enough interest to create a team that they are doing so and then we fill a coaching position if there's enough interest to have a team okay and can we utilize some of the channels to reach out not only just to the children but to their parents to let them know that these opportunities are out here and just those same things that they're putting in the buildings to let these parents know that if you're a child or you want your child to be involved it
is out there yeah certainly and we'll continue to communicate with Athletics about that and I have one more question about the intramural that I see and I'm guessing these are I see them all at the Elementary's is this the first year that we're having that back and can you just tell me a little bit about I see two directors for this and multiple leaders in just a little bit what is that structure yes absolutely it is the first first year the intramurals has come back to our elementary since pre-covered so that's exciting because it's an opportunity for the elementary students to get to start do things in fact they've had their first intramural activity already several weekends ago their first first football activity there are two designated leaders of intramurals who coordinate with all of
the building coaches the coaches are assigned at the building level it's part of the supplemental extra Duty that the principal assigns it's teachers of any kind and so those leaders coordinate all of that so it coordinates what facility they will be at what the rules are gathering participants names so that they're ready with Awards because they pass out trophies and things of that nature at each event and so they really organize the whole thing and collaborate and coordinate make sure every school is represented every Elementary School okay thank you actually have one final question on line 11 I see this is a position at the international at residence Park School and at Thurgood for adjunct then we are offering it's good to hear are we offering band at the international school at residence Park so
that's really good to hear that those well seventh through 12th grade they have that are we offering something similar for elementary or just starting there's music there's just regular music for the elementary just like they're in every building uh and then band starts in seventh grade and they actually had a concert last week they played um a song uh before every Lunch Period it's cute oh it was all woodwinds everywhere except for in the marching band is where Woodwinds shine oh my goodness I believe there's a question also about a teacher that went from long-term it was a hired and then went back to being a long-term sub that that was taken off the agenda last week there were some items but you all voted on that agenda so that cleared that up um I'm
not aware of a removal okay so it wasn't I thought I saw one this past weekend so I might have been mistaken I'm not aware okay I'm not aware of one being removed we do do that on occasion when um as Chief Harmon explained last last week that sometimes people don't meet the deadlines or requirements for licensure and so we changed the status but I'm not aware of a removal of one this week got it Mr President if I may yes sir Mr Simpson um number two um all of the excitement that we shared this evening what is the plan of the coordinator for PSC is uh resigning what is the plan to continue to make sure that we are keeping um this motivation who's going to be leading that charge is there do we
need to is it going to be internal are we posting the job how are we doing that that's that's still being discussed doctor okay you can speak to it if you would like her to that's still something that is being planned okay all right coordinator was trained by Mary Jane Kearns who was sitting in the back room she's going to step up and do more of that work um because all of them are being trained for by her so she'll be stepping up to do more of that work until we can figure out um a solution okay thank you and if you could keep me updated on what that solution thank you I appreciate it thank you Mr President thank you any other questions Dr Goodwin yes the the temporary clerical positions that are six
months are only six months yes I can so our clerical positions are civil service tested and so we follow the guidelines of the Civil Service Board um they uh their rules and regulations allow for us to hire what is called a temporary clerical for a six-month term only which gives them time to Civil Service tests so Civil Service tests are not just an at will you can enroll any time they're only offered on certain dates and periodically throughout the year so this gives us an opportunity to hire clerical so there's not a vacancy and it gives them the employee a six-month window to get enrolled get signed up and pass the civil service exam and are we doing anything to assist these individuals with being successful in that exam to go longer with us sure
well we certainly communicate with them about making sure that they're in enrolled to test and registered with civil service there's not much by way of any sort of a study guide or group or support that we can offer however I will tell you that in the past about six months we as a HR a group of us went to civil service we reviewed our clerical exam and we really made it more uh 21st century and more applicable to what our clericals do every day on a day-to-day basis and we have seen an increase in rate since then what's that pass rate I don't have it right now but I can get it for you okay yeah because prior it was it was very very low and they were still testing some skills that were a
little Antiquated for our clericals today um they're not people aren't dictating to our clericals and they're typing words per minute that's no longer as necessary as just technology skills and good customer service so I thank you I had a couple questions maybe for Dr Lolly um I see that there were some mentoring collaborative uh PDS supplementals for those do you know if there's any other upcoming things like that for our males and females of color staff I'm not aware of any additional ones but um we do have some Saturday sessions where there'll be uh paid for their their time on those Saturdays so you may see some of those on there okay if they have to go through like a supplemental type if we can do it strictly through payroll you won't see that but
um those would be up and coming I do know there are a couple Saturday sessions coming in the next three weeks okay appreciate it any other questions yes ma'am on the study table coordinator positions are most of those supplemental contracts like to our teachers or what what do our folks that are stepping into those positions look like and what are their qualifications and how many in each building yes so uh absolutely part of the job description and expectation was that we pull from licensed teachers or teachers within our building they're the ones who can best support and I can tell you by building exactly um where we are with the study table coordinator so Belmont High School has one and we're looking to fill three positions so two vacant but they have one one starting
uh Dunbar High School has three fully fully staffed Meadowdale has one and we're looking to fill two more opponents has three fully staffed Stivers has two we would like to add a third Thurgood is fully staffed with three and Belmont has two and we'd like to fill one more Edwin Joel Brown has one and at the middle school level we're just going to do two so one more to fill and same with Stivers middle and wagaman those three middle schools each have one a piece and we want one more and then Wright brothers has both of theirs and so the principals were involved in selecting the study table candidates to work with their students and I believe I would have to verify but I believe all almost all if not all of them are in
the building already as a staff member during the day thank you and then I guess superintendent this is would be directed more to you on the information how many do you know how many students in each of those buildings are attending these study tables and what our families know that they're there and I mean is it based on a grade point is a teacher saying you need to go how is that being managed within them it's actually if you're going to participate in athletics um and you're uh required to be there there are some students that are required to be there and some students that are recommended to be there uh just because it's time between their regular practices and school being out I can get you numbers this week um we uh I don't
have updated numbers right now but we can get you numbers this week and then as far as being the requirement the athletic department actually addressed the fact that study to you know study tables are recommended and required for those with specific grade level uh points so I'll get that information to the board thank you I'm just wondering based on some of those numbers we looked at tonight in those significant gaps that we have to cover that you know more more of our students should be at these study tables or have the opportunity to be at these study tables so thank you I look forward to the work continuing yeah thank you Mr Sampson thank you Mr President quick question in that last conversation the study table study hall coordinators are licensed teachers or can they
be long-term Subs as well they can be either okay yes they can meet you there all right thank you so much thank you and correct me if I'm wrong but uh once we have filled the positions with all the teachers that have applied that have been chosen we can go outside to people that have the qualifications they may have just a bachelor's degree that's not in education correct is that correct that's correct and and we certainly opened it internally first and that certainly is our intent because they know our children but we don't want to leave that vacancy because we still need a study table coordinator and don't want the students to go without if we need to fill from outside thank you thank you Mr President and the same lines of that conversation I
know we are we are seeking data on study tables this year and with these positions are they also covering to offer study tables in the morning I'm sorry are any of these Physicians offering the study table the one hour before school I'm not aware I believe it's uh several hours after school several days a week yeah they actually have offered it but they aren't getting any students early morning yeah and and that's been since we filled all the positions here yeah and I'll double check that Dr goodwine but that was the last thing I heard a week or so ago but I'll I will double check that yeah because we got to keep them for us to get the data that we're looking for to see if that is a a point I mean we

buildings um just to go uh to see what's going on in our buildings and um I'm excited about the the things that I see and so first school I went to after she was on the news being a superstar I went to go see uh principal Kelly at Belhaven and um Belhaven is is doing some great things um I had the opportunity to watch I call her rock star the secretary Miss Northcutt I watched this um woman masterfully de-escalate a student allowed a student to remain um have it in his Integrity she was just a rock star so being in that building was absolutely amazing I also got a chance to visit Edison with principal Monroe and AP Knowles always enjoy visiting Edison and seeing the work that they do there um had the opportunity
last month to go to Meadowdale CTE where principal wrist Miller and ap's Nas and Davis and I had the joy of learning about all of the CTE programs in that building um met a rock star of a teacher of Dr harsh in biomedical science when I say rock star of a teacher rock star of a teacher so thank you Dr harsh for allowing me to say hi to you and your students who absolutely love that woman um and then I went to Stivers got to see the band Gala practice in the parking lot and so Dr Goodwin um woodwinds make the van say it again Woodwinds make the band you know so it was good it was good to see uh the band practicing for their Gala um I got a chance to see some
homecoming proposals it was it was good to be in that building and then I was able to visit Edwin Joe Brown um got a chance to see principal McDowell ap's uh Bryant and Winston and got a chance to talk to some amazing intervention specialists in that building and so I've had a joy of seeing the things the learning that's going on in the buildings teachers excited teaching principals and assistant principals um doing what they can to make sure that our Scholars are receiving the best education possible and so and then lastly I want to shout out Dr Lolly and um Dr Ramo and chief Dooley for taking a meeting with me to talk about CTE it was an informative meeting I'm learning more and more each day about CTE and the importance of CTE and
the programming that is happening the availability the things that are happening for our students I absolutely want to say thank you for taking that meeting and just educating me more um I think that's all I got Mr President thank you for allowing me this opportunity appreciate it vice president Reiner I have a couple items to update I'm waiting for first reading since Dr Pickett is not able to be here um so if I can get a notification when that is up a few updates um I attended the southwest region fall conference for the osba I've gone several times um I met with and talked to many board members across the Southwest southwest region it's always an interesting experience to hear what's happening in other districts many things alike many things not um great opportunity to
recognize teachers across the region as well I'm looking forward to attending the capitol Conference next month I understand that there are several board members who are attending Dr Pickett and I along with Rachel Underwood will be presenting about the International School a couple of legislative updates the State Board of education's ad hoc legislative committee met on October 11th and discussed two resolutions that have passed by the full board would make recommendations to the general assembly the first one actually is relevant to you board member um Lacy I didn't want to interrupt when you asked this question earlier but the first resolution that unanimously passed the committee would recommend the repeal of the provision of the third grade reading guarantee law that mandates retention of a third grade student who does not meet a minimum score
on the third grade English language arts assessment the data showed that few students who were retained reach proficiency when they retook the third grade ELA assessment so the full board will reconsider the resolution at the November meeting um the second resolution recommends that the general assembly allocate dollars from the American Rescue plan act to provide all students in Ohio a free breakfast and lunch the committee did not vote on the resolution but plans to gather additional data including the cost of School meals among other information this would be really important to districts such as ours every single District I think would benefit from this but especially those that are hard hit by high levels of poverty and the last thing I want to discuss which is uh of great concern I think of this district
is that the State Board of Education voted 12-7 to send a resolution to the executive committee for further consideration this resolution opposes the proposed changes to the federal rule that would interpret Title IX as Banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity what is happening against our Q Plus students is horrendous I am so deeply disappointed in the bigotry that exists against Q Plus students [Music] it shouldn't take a a family member or a you know a person to make it real but as somebody who has several Q Plus people in my family I have a trans kid this is important I was actually really impressed by the Toledo school board that on the 10th I believe passed a resolution up opposing the State Board of education's resolution it was very strongly worded I
have not talked with other board members about this yet but if interested you know we just passed a resolution last week I would love to bring a resolution in support of our Q Plus students to this board for consideration I cannot emphasize strongly enough how much our schools need to be safe spaces for all Q Plus students all Q Plus staff all Q Plus teachers they exist and and and um denying that they exist does not make them go away being cruel to them does not make them go away it only makes their lives more difficult and it increases the risk of suicide it increases the risk of self-harm every single person whether student teacher or staff deserves to know that they are loved and accepted and I know that our district believes that and
with that being said do we have the first reading for policy up yet [Music] okay who want us to come back for policy sure thank you no board member wig gagne thank you thank you um to all of my board colleagues for their continued work um here uh thank you and congratulations to our superintendent who was named superintendent of the year um uh for my yay yes a lot much work to celebrate much work to be done clearly and I think that we have a great team that we're continuing to show up to do the work my report this week or for this month would be that I have confirmed that we have our first business advisory committee meeting set for the year for November 3rd our location will either be probably in our community
room across the street or perhaps maybe at Welcome Stadium if the weather would permit I'm circling around a few ideas there and the superintendent and I are going to talk over some of those as we begin to set the agenda for that meeting one of the most exciting factors of that work this year has been that I've been a little behind in getting our meetings kicked off for the year because my chair Mr Joe toss has been serving with us on some separate contract work for some of our our CRA and our Tiff work so we have an initiate created the work because we didn't want any conflict of interest and we think we're going to have to continue along the lines with that work so my Joe has served as a mentor to me
in this work for five or six years now and really been a great source of guidance along the lines of a lot of work you see through our career Pathways that Mr Dion Sampson was sharing about that's been a collaboration of some of those relationships through that BAC effort you know making sure that we have plugged in the components to those programs that both align with Ohio High School Board Association and also then with the needs that our community our business Community needs because clearly those positions and those career pathways are meant to fulfill our much needed Workforce here in the Dayton community so anyway so that work continues uh kind of automatically through those programs and through Montgomery County so our business our efforts this year with business advisory are really going to be
focused a lot around Welcome Stadium my vision when I wanted to run again for a school board this time around along with continuing this exciting work that I'm humbled and grateful to serve to help facilitate was that I really had a vision at Welcome Stadium I think it's a beautiful tool I think it's a beautiful asset that just has so much Rich opportunity it has so much Legacy for our community first of all and then so much Rich opportunity in terms of an Enterprise creating an Enterprise for Dayton public schools that will have a long-standing impact for our students for our community and for our region I deeply believe that it'll be a one-of-a-kind stadium in the state of Ohio that I think will really bring us great just great opportunity so I am so
happy to announce that we have secured Mr Keith Byers as our co-chair for our business advisory Council this year Mr Byers is a graduate of Roth High School 19 I don't know 80 something like that he is a former NFL football star and I think we'll really bring a lot of wonderful things to this project to help us really create this Enterprise that we're continuing to Envision as we go along so look forward for some really exciting work around that I'm super grateful and uh yes so thank you all for your consent continued service thank you to our team who continues to present this information and I appreciate you all thank you thank you thank you Miss wiganier I think if we refresh our first readings are up now for vice president to review let
me see if everybody refresh how do you see them would you like me to go ahead and do that yes please this is a resolution to adopt board policy first reading the rationales and as much as the board of education is committed to the continued updating of its policies rules and regulations manual in the committee which was appointed has been working toward that goal the following abroad at this time for first reading and compliance with board policy BFC policy adoption now therefore be it resolved that the Board of Education of the Dayton City School District Montgomery County Ohio hereby accepts and adopts the following policies that have been codified for inclusion in the handbook of policies rules and regulations file EBC Emergency Management and safety plans provides to align with legislation igch-r also lec-r college
credit plus revised to align with legislation igdj interscholastic Athletics provides to align with legislation kma relations with support organizations revise to align with legislation kmb relations with booster organizations was removed lec-r college credit plus revise to align with legislation these policies are being read for the first time as such a motion or second is not required these policies will be available in the superintendent's office for review and comment prior to their second reading and adoption by the Board of Education furthermore the policies will be reviewed by the superintendent's office the board's office and the legal department of state and public schools prior to the second reading thank you if anybody on policy could just answer which um or maybe that's something we can look into later why was the relations with booster organizations removed was
there something else that took its place or Dr Lolly what happened was in the uh recommendation from osba they recommended that all organizations be put under the new policy of relations with booster organization I mean excuse me we support organizations and the boosters separately removed so it made one policy this makes sense thank you uh doctor I really don't want to do this I've heard too much Colonel white stuff today Dr Goodwin should be proud I do have one question before I get into my my own stuff are we as a board going to add the business manager recommendations if he ever has any to our agenda and I know we changed our organizational chart are we going to approve that at the next meeting does that need to be brought forward now anyone any
thoughts if you guys don't know I mean I guess blankily I think it's definitely something we could do that I mean are we pushing it off are we doing that I just seen in the past that I the board formally adopts the word chart and uh has everybody well we would have to put it on the on the agenda here and then make it before a vote which we could do if we wanted to do now or if we wanted to do it at the review meeting next month either way it's fine with me um I just want us to stay in line with what we got going on Mr President if I may yes um in line with Dr Goodwin's question I would like to uh place it at next month's meeting I know
we we received the updated but it'll give us an opportunity to look at it um in detail and if there are any questions that we could hash all of that out before we vote on it versus having a whole bunch of questions if we were to do it today if that would be the pleasure of the board I would like to wait till next month that's fine I mean we also need to add on because we need to update our agenda too the agenda because we'll be adding put on the third thing for recommendations yeah so with that I'm not in a disagreement I do want to say that if we're going to do that then any questions can we make sure that we ask them before that meeting so we can come ready to
vote on that day and then also if we can have that um be placed on be ready to be placed on the agenda once we have that we'll be ready to place on the agenda since our board I mean our business manager has been already hired and brought on board question Mr President yes sir so with the questions are we going to schedule a special meeting for us to talk about it or are you saying just submit our questions look up submit those questions so we come in and then you know if they're still in the lingering things but things that we have the ability to ask reach out to uh superintendent Lolly treasure Opera House our business manager Dr Lawrence if we can start that process during the time same way we talk about
asking some of the questions that we want information for so then also they can be prepared with any information at the board meeting if those questions that they need to get information for it got it to better prepare them for any questions we may have got it thank you sir no problem I know we'll kick it back too the illustrious Dr Goodwin woodwind saxophone section so it's way better than the brass when you're in the closed enclosed room but first I want to give a shout out to Mom today is her birthday and I did nothing for it and I'm at a board meeting right now and she had to go to work so that's the life of an adult and I also want to give a shout out to my aunt my mother's younger
sister her birthday was yesterday so for one day they were the same age nuts right every year it happens it's great second I want to give a shout out to Dr Virgil Goodwin which just so happens to be my older brother him in the Wilberforce Hound of sound I think that's their name I may have messed it up they came out hounds with an s on there hounds of sound they came out in for that solid 15 minutes you didn't see much movement in our Stadium because people were focused and glued in and then I heard also a part of that field a part of that team was a former a recent graduate from Belmont who was on a woodwind instrument saxophone up front and he was out there and it was great to see
first hand if this band this was their first live performance on the football field it was at our stadium and we had DPS alumni involved from the direction of the band performing in the band as well as being instructors in the band so thank you for that and also everyone who helped make that possible with Dr Lolly executive director Jones Sam all of you guys did a great job I don't know if you really did anything Sam but I just wanted to put you in there you know I did have the opportunity to attend several schools and the elementary schools have some of the best artwork on them I believe it was at at Rosa Parks where we got to take I got to take some pictures of little wings and you got to get
really low so you can be in the pictures I got to meet one of our classroom helpers I don't remember her official titles but she was this woman is in her 80s and she is still showing up every day and that is super impressive to know that you show up every day you love what you're doing and you enjoy it so that that team over there just really thanks for having us I got to attend Dunbar this past week for their homecoming don't there's no clapping down here I didn't see you with me in the building seriously but I got to attend Dunbar for their open house and it was a magical event the spirits you could see it all throughout the building every from every door display to the live band to the recruitment
of college and other resources in the community you can see that that team over there put a lot of effort in making sure that the students had I really felt homecoming as it was coming through so I look forward to I believe we still have one homecoming left this week which is third good I didn't get to see opponents but it's really good to see those things I want to give a shout out to Zach in the I.T Department I've never been to the I.T Department uh until recently I recently got a Chromebook from the district I will say on the record Chromebooks are horrible and I will adamantly vote against them every single time because they are not real devices but Zach and the entire it team did a great job of helping me
out and I also got to see that a lot of our recent graduates components are filling many of those positions in I.T so it's really good to see they went right into those who did go right into the workforce they are still with the district and they are utilizing some of their skill sets that they not only developed their opponents but they're now being compensated as employees from the district so that's good and my final thing I do want to request even though I know you probably would have already done this without the request Dr Lolly for us to respond to Mr Lattimore because he brought up several things and we just want to make sure that when people do bring those type of things up someone from the district is reaching out to them
to work with them to find the answers and if we are if we do have gaps figuring out how we can fill those gaps to better serve this district with that I will say what wins our life Lisa Simpson played the saxophone not the trombone and I will pass it back to you this is what we deal with Madame treasure this month's Treasurer's Office received to ours one award is Award of financial reporting achievements and certificate of achievement for ex excellence in financial reporting from government Finance Officers Association jfoa the second one we received is the certificate of excellence in financial reporting from Association of school business officials International aspo for our annual comprehensive financial reporting for 2021. so this accomplishment couldn't have happened without the hard-working dedicated treasurer's team and the support of the
board the superintendent and the district thank you so much you are the best my team they are the best as always continue the work okay is that all Madame treasure yes thank you um before we go to Dr Lolly I would like for our board to come down and join us in front of the days [Music] if we can come down in front you can oh I can come too you said before communicate I'm moving much better though honestly oh my gosh yeah yeah it's been a long 12 weeks that's fantastic you have it consider it a gift appreciate it sometimes I actually recently made these foreign [Applause] all right we're good thank you thank you so much thank you it's very rare stuff foreign well first of all thank you to the board of
education for your support and I do have to say that you know um as someone who's been selected as the Ohio superintendent of the year when you're a leader it's not you by yourself it's your team it's every single person in this District that makes a difference and helps you achieve those things that you set out to achieve so the the superintendent of the year really is is about an award that goes to the Dayton public schools because of them and because of the work we've been able to do to make the improvements that we've made over the over the last six years the recognition comes to the superintendent but it belongs to all of us so thank you to the board of education and my previous board and all the staff members here in
this district and the team members that that work every day to make Dayton public schools better for our students and for our students and our parents because that's why we're here so thank you so much for that I really appreciate it um we had an exciting week last week I too was out visiting so I've been in 15 buildings over the last couple of weeks and and see some of the same things that all of you are talking about positive things that are happening in the schools and teachers that are that are engaged I went into a preschool class and I was so excited to to be in that preschool class and the teachers were so excited for me to be in that preschool class I wanted to stay there all day because they're just
so much fun but I had to go to other places but then that teacher wrote me a note and said please come back you know we really enjoyed having you here so I I plan on doing that into that particular classroom because the it was just so much fun but it's a good place to be in the schools and to see what's actually happening we actually had International School students there were flutes and clarinets and percussionists who performed before each Lunch Period on Friday and they were very very good and they've only played for for a month so our music programs are starting to produce I let Mr Sampson listen on my phone Friday night as the Belmont Drum Corps played I held up my phone and I said listen to this uh at the
at the game and they were they were absolutely phenomenal so people probably wonder why I pushed the Arts as much as I do but I believe that when you're when you're in something that connects you with other people like music connects you with other people or art connection with other people that you have that relationship that you build and because of that relationship you tend to show up and you tend to work hard for your teammates for your for your people that are sitting next to you in those band programs the artists that are sitting next to you sculpting like your sculpting and I just think that really is what builds a relationship and connects you to other people and that's why that's why it's important to me to continue working on that with everybody
here we did have a great night at the Dunbar homecoming Dunbar and Thurgood played Wilberforce span was phenomenal and no one moved in the stands it was amazing to watch everybody just stand there and watch that band perform it was just an outstanding opportunity for our students to see that and to be able to Aspire to be part of an organization like that and then we had a really great day on I believe it was Thursday our oopsy asks me um staff members pulled together and provided meals to six different buildings three Mills in each bag that they passed out and I just like to read this and and thank them for providing this to Roosevelt Eastmont Ruskin Westwood Valerie and Kaiser the Ohio Association of Public School Employees opsy represents more than 400 employees
who work in the Dayton public schools the children come in contact with members of locals 156 158 191 627 643 766 and 766 B every day because they are the mechanics the secretaries the mental health assistants the bus drivers the paraprofessionals the interpreters and psychologists who touch their lives during the school day many of them live in the Dayton public schools and chill their children and grandchildren may be in the same class as the people that they were giving food to as working parents and grandparents they know that families can use how also each year union members volunteer to stuff bags with meals and snacks for students in selected districts throughout Ohio this year we're proud that Dayton public schools and 2 600 elementary students received those bags so to opsy and asked me union
members the locals in the districts from across the state have donated thousands of dollars to provide for these meals and I just want to say a great big thank you to them for sending three meals home with every student in one of these six buildings so appreciate opsy and ask me and I'm really proud that we have such a great relationship with them and that concludes my report Mr President thank you madam superintendent um I want to start off with I was able to go to a few schools and with the mayor of the city um I know Miss Angela Worley Mr blessing who was did an amazing job with um social studies programming and getting the kids down we talked about just voting in schools and not about what to vote for or who
to vote for things like that but just getting kids in um register to vote and then then last week there was a March where the district helped with uh to get everything together and those students got to March down to the Board of Elections and vote for the very first time and I think that's just a wonderful thing um we talk about just civic education and letting people have a voice and getting some of our kids to understand that at 18 years old you do have a voice more importantly before then you have a voice then it also shows the the need for us as adults to speak for some of the children that do not have a voice one of the things that I love and sometimes do not love about the district and
learning about education is just seeing how many pieces of our society kind of intertwined with things and I say that to say that when we talked about the kids that could vote you know you brought down the students that were around that voting age and there were at each school there were students that went that got to that voter registration they stopped and you could see their body kind of sink because one of those questions is are you a U.S citizen and if you're not you have to quit while you're there and you cannot register to vote and to see students go and just say you know what that blocks me and to understand that there's something that none of us up here on the board can do no one in this District can do
something about and then how do we then fight for that how do we make those students feel like they're a part of this experience and so I appreciate everyone that played a part from DPS because they still told those children you're not getting up from this table you're not leaving this room this does not define you and we're still going to talk about Civic engagement we're still going to talk about how we all are part of this this greater Collective and DPS students and then also I got a chance to talk to some stiver students and a question was asked about you know what what is the importance of voting on certain issues and I kind of just talked to them and said one of the things I told him was you know everything might
be okay in your house but if everything isn't okay in your neighbor's house it's it's it's not something that's visible to you until you know your window gets broken something gets stolen and now we start talking about how do we help each other and understanding that students and people in their communities have issues that they might not see every day but the more we talk to people the more we can understand what are our friends issues what are the things our friends are concerned about and after that I was talking to um mayor Mims and Dr Lawrence outside when we're finishing up and I thought we were in the way of a student I don't want to get choked up but I thought we were in the way of a student and I turned to
them and said oh I'm sorry you know you could have said that we could move you could you know don't don't wait for us and that student said no I was waiting for you because I really appreciate the fact that you talked about how somebody's issue may not be important to other people until they learn about how it affects everyone and that's how I've been thinking about how do I spread awareness for lgbtq plus students and to see that you know that link that understanding and when we talk about these things and they were like you know and asked hey would you like to you know talk to me and could we uh get some people from other schools together and you know it was a great time and actually um Dr Lawrence and mayor
Mims knew some of the people that they were trying to connect with and like just seeing that piece where we you know you think you're coming into a building to get kids registered to vote and not understanding that you're tapping into something larger so I want to appreciate Dr Lolly and Mrs blessing and Angela Worley as well for for the help they did to get all of those students in those rooms and the work they did to not make it just about voting but to make it about learning about each other to make this world a better place um I want to give a huge huge set of props to our opponents boys soccer team not only did our athletic department get to host a tournament soccer game which now makes up another first because
we hosted a softball game uh in the last softball season we're able to host the soccer game this year and they actually went out and had a victory in in that which is a long time coming for our district and in understanding that these sports that we don't look at as the basketball footballs and tracks and understanding that we're growing in those and when we grow in those we provide opportunities for more students to meet more people to feel uh feel excited to just see those kids who and a lot of those kids are newly arrived students and to see those kids get embraced at school for doing something that other students haven't done it really like raised their profile it made them feel great so I really want to shout out that and Shout
out our Athletics team for continuing to build up these new sports and also I was talking to our athletic director and she shared a message with me and I shared and I apologize if she didn't want me to but I think I love bragging on our kids um a school reached out to them that they had played the opponent's voice and that message reads you know our that game was the best game I've seen all year our team only has one loss this season but that game was the best game and we appreciate the camaraderie or team show and everything and then at the end of that message it said now we have two losses me and our opponents boys beat them but they really said they want to come back and then play more
DPS teams and so to see that Athletics shed a light on not just the sports part but just the humans we have in our district and then having people that want to come back and do things with us um then lastly I want to lift up the work from the athletic advisory Council and the work around Welcome Stadium recently I was able to go over to the service building uh with Miss Wick gagne and look at some of the artifacts that are in our service building and talk about some of the things we're doing about archiving those things and some of the things we want to do when we update our Hall of Fame and we're having a meeting tomorrow um to talk about some of that Hall of Fame criteria and you know just
really working through those things and as a side I took a two pictures of things that you know were there and one was a set of beavers from the old Patterson School and another was an old picture of their original EJ Brown building and it was from an area photo from years ago and I posted them on social media and you had people immediately posting their class from Patterson posting when they went to EJ Brown asking to buy these things and just just showing that there's so much love for people who really grew up and understanding that there are so many buildings that aren't around anymore there's so many Traditions that aren't around anymore so I really appreciate it um chief hurwitz for allowing us to go through there and look at those things and
I mean you could spend a day in there and just going through there and understanding that just by those two pictures I saw that need to be able to put these things out on display and share with people and really get people to come back because most of the people that posted on social media they don't have kids in this District they're not in this District but people reached out and inboxed and said you know if I would ship these beavers to them they would pay for everything but and no we would not sell the Beavers this kid would do something to me if we did that but I just want to say there's so much that we have in our district that we need to share and understanding that on top of that there
is so much more work to do as was talked about today there's so much work to do and the only way we're going to do that work is if we be creative we be Innovative and we do it working together and with that said I will motion to adjust so move second been moved a second and I see no questions on the motion maybe we have a vote president Smith yes Mrs reinert yes Mr Samson yes yes Dr Pickett she's not here Dr budwein yes Mr lazy yes six yeses we are adjourned foreign
