Uh since everyone, welcome to our school city Hammond regular school board meeting and happy new year and the Wizards, Harlem Wizards are in town. How about that? We're going to have our call to order and uh we're going to now stand for our pledge of allegiance, please. I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. >> Roll call of officers. Trusty Guierra >> present. >> Trusty Spencer. Trusty Stanford >> present. >> Trusty Candela >> present. Trusty Blake King present. Uh m Mr. Selenas, we do have a quorum of four

so we can proceed for our meeting. Mr. Selenus, >> thank you very much. Good evening everyone. Committee members, trustees, members of our board and community. Uh we're going to start this evening with our board of finance meeting. I'd like to call Mr. Daniel uh Dalton to the podium, please. Thank you. >> Good evening, school board members, and happy new year to everyone. Thank you. >> So, the state requires annually that the school district uh meet to uh elect officers and so I would I for the board of finance and so I would direct my or your attention to attorney over here and so that you guys can run through the process of electing both president and secretary of your board of finance. So t typically that's done in a nomination fashion. >> Apologies. >> Mhm.

>> Trustees, I I would like a motion that the current uh officers um President King, President uh President I mean um >> secretary, >> Trusty Guerrera, secretary and >> I'm the secretary. Trusty St. [laughter] I'm sorry, Secretary and Trusty um Spencer that we um maintain these as the officers for our finance officers. >> Is it just president and secretary? >> Yes, ma'am. >> Okay. So, you have to leave. >> It's right here. >> Yeah, but you have to leave Kelly out. You chose You said Kelly, too. >> She's the Okay. Thank you. uh uh deleting. I'm sorry, Trustee Spencer. So, are we ready to vote? >> Are there any questions? Do I have a motion first? >> I make a motion for uh to retain the roles of president and secretary as Trusty Blake King

as president and trustee Stanford as secretary for the board of finance. >> Second. It's been moved and properly second that Trusty Blake King and Trustee Stanford uh become the officers for the board of finance. Are there any questions? Any questions? All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any oppose? Eyes have it. Thank you, Mr. Sandra. >> Sure thing. And the next order of business when it comes to the annual requirements of the board of finance is to review the investment income from the previous calendar year 2025. So you may have a memo in front of you. >> We do. >> The investment income for 2025 amounted to 1,743,935.15. Are there any questions on that investment income? >> Okay. Moving forward, there should be a review of the prior year investment policy or the investment

policy that exists for the school district. Trustee or Superintendent Selenus, do we have that investment policy handy? >> Miss Lopez. If not, that is okay as long as the school board is okay with the current investment policy as it stands. >> Is it necessary that it's read into record? >> That board policy >> is a >> go ahead. >> We see it as but it's not necessary to have it read into record. >> That is correct. Yes. >> Okay. >> I just have to ask ask you the question. >> Yes, we have it. fiscal condition. And I will also review this uh item number four down there. This is just a general summary of the major funds, the education fund, the operations fund, the rainy day fund, and the self- insurance fund. Beginning and ending

cash balances for calendar year 2025, which as I said, I will review in my year-end financial report here in uh a couple of minutes. And then the final piece of order as it relates to the statutory requirements for this meeting is to look at the fiscal indicators which DWAB um puts out every single year the uh distressed unit appeals board which oversees all of the school districts in the state of Indiana. Is >> yes >> we know about do well. And so that link can be found through this memo and you can look at uh various fiscal indicators that uh apply directly to the school city payment. >> Okay. >> So that concludes my portion of the board of finance meeting. >> Mr. Cinder, I I do have one question. Uh the total amount of

interest income, where would that money where would we see that money in the 1,743? Where would it be? >> Where would you see it? >> Report. Yeah. in a financial report >> likely the operations fund because that's where or the rainy day fund because that is where we have funds invested from. >> So it's going into our rainy day. >> That's my question. Where would it show up on >> just operations financial report? >> Only operations. >> Operations. Okay. Fine. Thank you very much. >> That's Any other questions board members? >> That concludes your report. Thank you very much. Thank you. Our next item is the uh financial presentation. Also, uh Mr. Daniel Dalton will be presenting. >> Thank you, Superintendent Selenus. Apologies. I was not here last month to give an update through uh

November of 2025, but here I am to give an update through December 31st of 2025. So through calendar year, year end, you'll see on this first page here, the education fund, we see a profit of roughly 13.6 million. That's a good news. I'm giving you a good news report. >> Yes. >> Mhm. You look at our debt service fund. Yes. It's it's it's a good news report, but you have to take in mind with the debt service fund, we receive money in June and December with our property taxes, but we actually make debt service payments in July and January. So, there's a one month kind of offage >> depending on what debt service obligations are due when and um under which timing. the operations fund. Uh you'll see that it's it's relatively stagnant and that's

good news because most school corporations across the state of Indiana struggle heavily with their operations fund. They always are struggling to have property taxes alone support that individual fund. And so there's um this again good news report for us that fund saw roughly a $600,000 uh net profit. And I don't consider the school district as a business, but I have to say it's a net profit. It's a surplus. Yes. >> Uh the rainy day fund is stagnant. That's good as well. That means we have something to fall back on just in case we ever need it. Self- insurance, it goes without saying that self- insurance is is hit or miss between any given year. Um the your your renewal rates could increase substantially in 2027 or they could stay stagnant. we just don't know. And

so it's good to have a healthy reserve in that inside of that fund. Down below you'll see all of the title funds um which as I've said in months past are reimbursement based. So the good news from the last time I've talked to you is a couple of these funds have actually zeroed out. Meaning >> yes, >> we had negative balances and now we've gotten them to zero because we closed out those funds. >> Uh next slide, please. This is just a monthly overview of what the education fund looks like from January through December of 2025. Uh you'll see it's relatively stable as it comes to revenues and expenditures. There's really nothing interesting to point out here. >> Okay, >> because the education fund is paying for payroll, substantially payroll, some supplies in and just

a couple of uh other minor items. Next slide. Operations fund. This one looks a little bit wonky, but as I said, we receive our property taxes in June and December. And so you'll see the revenue bars are substantial for those two months. [clears throat] Next slide, please. Debt service is the same situation. However, we do request what's called a um oh what's the term of it? when we request early >> advanced property tax distribution from the county. And so in May, you'll see that there's a a big blue bar there. And then in June, it's a big blue bar. Same with November and December. All of that is the same amount of levy that we levied for the entire calendar year of 2025. And that allows us to pay down our debt service. And as

I mentioned at at the top of this presentation, you'll notice in January, we had a substantial expenditure six $6.5 million and then in July roughly $6.1 million. That's the one month difference between when we receive our property tax revenue to pay debt service versus when we actually owe that debt service obligation. One month difference. [clears throat] Next slide, please. Here is the true budget versus what was actually spent in calendar year 2025 for all [cough] three [clears throat] of those funds. You'll see for the education fund, we budgeted $95 million and spent 78 million of that remaining close to 18% of that budget was remaining. the opera or the debt service fund, you'll see that we budgeted to the exact dollar amount, which is great. That's exactly how it should be done. And in the

operations fund, we we had remaining roughly 17% of our budget. So, this is a standard good news report. Um I will not run through the next two pla uh pages which are the monthly cash flows but those are available within the board doc's agenda for the public to to review. >> Thank you Mr. Cinder. Are there any questions for the board? >> There is no red. I like that. >> Yes, ma'am. >> I love seeing green. Green is good. >> Green is good. Always good. Green finger. Okay. No more questions for the board. Thank you for this report and u we look forward to our next month's report. >> Thank you, >> Mr. Selenas. [clears throat] >> Thank you very much, Mr. Dalton. And I'd like to also thank um Mrs. Pritchette for all of

her efforts with our finances in our school district. Thank you very much, Miss Pritchette. >> Thank you. >> Yes, definitely. Thank you. [clears throat] >> It's always good to start the meeting off with good news, right? All right. Um, we have a very, very packed house today. Lots of beautiful children in the house for some exciting reasons. Um, there's a lot of excitement in the air because we have lots to celebrate. And I'm going to call up uh our very own Miss Carla Davis. Is she in there? She is. [laughter] um she is our district-wide Lego robotics coordinator and she's going to share some fantastic news uh regarding all of our students in our building. So, welcome Miss Davis. >> Good evening, Madame President, members of the school board, Mr. Selenus, and the community. I'm

excited here to take this opportunity to recognize our incredible HIM and First Lego League teams. First Lego League is an international program um routing in um strong STEM foundation. Each year teams are given a theme challenge to explore the real world problems and encourage develop innovation solution. Students build um robots entirely from Lego pieces and program them to program and using coding on a mission onto a table. We have this year the theme challenge was uncover the past to discover the future. So, we had three elementary teams participate this year. The Lincoln Smartbots, Burns and Hicks, um, Bionic Bulldogs, and Irving Innovators. They were new this year. We brought them back in. And then we did have a Hesville team. It's made up of middle school teams, kids on there. Okay. Our teams competed in

three tournaments this year, beginning with the Hammond tournament on November 1st. Five teams from the area participated, and our students did an outstanding job. Burns and Hicks got um earned second place overall, first place in table run, and coach Felix received a coaches award. [cheering] [applause] >> Then Lincoln Smartbox first place first place overall and first in our project. [cheering] [applause] Irving did they received the rising star award and placed fifth overall. >> All right. [applause] >> Hesville placed third overall and they got the motivation award. [applause] >> We did have one middle school team from River Forest. They came and they participated. They had fourth overall and they placed first in core values. >> All right. [applause] Then on November 15th, we traveled to IU and Gary for our um qualifying tournament for semi-state

where teams can continue to shine. There was 12 teams that competed that day. Lincoln received core values and the pure award. [applause] Burns and Hicks um received the engineer excellence award and the coaches award, Felix [applause] Scott. And then Irving received the motivation award. [applause] >> And Hesville had um robot performance. >> All right. [applause] >> Then um Lincoln has a junior team too that attended IU. They did a presentation in front of the jud judges. As students um progress into exploring level, they apply their skilled knowledge by working in a team and design and build a robot from Legos. and they are using the spike so they're a step down from the normal team and they got to participate too. So then here we go. Then both Lincoln and Burns and Hicks advanced to

semi-state at Purdue Fort Wayne on December 13th. Um there was 49 teams that competed there. Burns and Hicks earned third place on Table Run >> and the Par. [cheering] And then Lincoln earned fifth place um in robot design. >> All right. [applause] >> This has um truly been an amazing season filled with learning, growth, and teamwork. I want to congratulate all of our students, coaches, and families for their dedication and support. We are incredibly proud of our teams and are looking forward to more success in the future. Thank you. >> Excellent. [applause] >> [applause] >> Are we bring are we bringing the kids up or there be any kind of presentation? >> Miss Carla Davis, uh would you like to bring the students up? Yes. Okay. Yes. So, we are going to be bringing the

students up. Trustees, >> if you are a member of this uh wonderful team, please make your way up to the front of the room. There are principles and parents and trustees that would love to congratulate you and take pictures. Any coaches, any parents who would like to come up and join, please join us as well. [applause] >> Congratulations to everyone. [applause] respond. Can you hear everybody? Congratulations. [cheering] [applause] [cheering] [applause] >> Congratulations. We're so excited. >> And It's wonderful. >> As I always uh >> I've always said, this is the special part of being a schoolboard trustee. When you see the results of the hard work of our teachers and sponsors, it takes a lot of work. and parents getting them to practice, you need to give yourselves a big round of applause and just

hug yourself cuz we [applause and cheering] love you for this because we're saying our kids can do this. It enhances their critical thinking, self-motivation, self-esteem. We are the best. That's why we're 10 times better because of you. Thank you so very much. All of you give yourself [applause] Congratulations to all of our students, parents, families, Miss Davis, and all of our uh elementary principles and teachers. This is a fantastic recognition. So, trustees, it doesn't stop there. We're going to also celebrate some of our secondary students tonight as well. We've got great things going on at our high schools. And I'd like to call to the uh podium Mr. Alexander Sarajki from Morton High School is going to um talk to us a little bit about what's going on there. Also, we have Miss Teresa George

who is one of our teachers at uh Morton as well. >> All right, >> MakerFair was a [snorts] huge success. So guys, can we give a round of applause for all of our secondary buildings in the district? Um we did an outstanding [applause] job of showing unity across the secondary buildings. Um so really my heart goes out to all of you guys. I want to give a big shout out to every student, every teacher that presented all of them uh their stuff, their passion projects. Um shout out to our partners in First Maker Space uh that we are working with. Um they did a phenomenal job of helping support us and to MakerFair for allowing us to host this event under their name. Um we have a lot of talent across our district and so

any opportunity that we get to celebrate it is huge. our teachers, our students, the staff, everybody has something to bring to the table. So, bringing the whole district together. Um, all of our secondary schools are represented under one roof truly was something phenomenal. So, on our next slide, you can see some of the stuff that we had. Um, we had everything from drone obstacle courses at Scott. Um, we had workshops where the community was invited to come and learn something new. Um, Acres brought their STEM table. We can see where we grew vegetables, we had art, technology, applied mathematics, uh everything under the sun. So it was really really phenomenal. Now what was also really nice too is that first uh maker also gave us some really nice media pieces. So I have three things

that I want to show off. Um on the next slide um we have some parent testimonials. First, [music] >> I think it's very important for the schools to have things like this. [music] It allows for students to be more creative and to find out what it is that they're interested in. I just wanted to [music] thank the school city of Hammond for having hosting events like this for all of our students [music] so that way they can find out what it is that they're interested in because they are our future and they deserve to see what it is that they want to do and inspire others. [music] [music] So phenomenal parent testimonial and uh we have two more. >> Okay. >> On the next slide. >> I think it's very important for the schools to

have things like [music] this. It allows for students to be more creative. >> [laughter] >> I love it. >> I am Teresa George [music] >> and my name is Jess Morales >> and we are team >> team [music] >> and we represent 3D printing >> maker space. I like doing picture of my name and my friends, my sisters. I love it. I love my teachers everything. >> Yeah. and he loves to be able to make people happy and give them gifts. Everyone should try 3D printing. It's really cool, >> really fun, wouldn't you say? >> Yeah, it was so fun. I love it. [music] >> May I add that young man made me my own personal >> Oh, yes. And and even more exciting, I believe he's in the house right now. Is he IN

THE HOUSE? SWAT, COME ON UP. [laughter] Come on up, >> Miss George. Come on up. [applause] >> Come on up. >> That was so exciting. >> Oh my goodness. [applause] >> Oh my goodness. >> All right. So So team, show us what you got. >> So my name is Miss George and this is Hoswis. >> So Hoswa, what did we do? What did we go do? >> We do uh doing the >> printing in the in the maker space. And what did we make over there? >> I made three names. >> Whose names did we make? >> I made my friends. My I made my friends, my teachers, my sisters. >> All right. And what else did we do? We helped Mr. C with his castle. What did we make? What kind of animals did

we make? >> Animals. We make dragon, dinosaurs, >> swords. And what else did we make for the rest of the board members? >> We make three. >> So, you want to give them to them? >> Yeah. Okay. [laughter] So, [applause] >> now we got Mr. Manny. >> Mr. Manny. >> Oh, I'm jealous now. I want to be exclusive. >> Sorry. [laughter] >> And we have Evangelene. >> [applause] [laughter] >> We have our superintendent, Mr. Anthony is over there. [applause] Beautiful. >> And we have Kelly. >> Kelly, >> we'll put it right here. Get it. >> She's not here, but we can get get hers. And then you'll get Miss Kiara. And we have Miss Melissa. Miss Melissa. >> All right. >> Just like you. [laughter] [applause] >> So, a little backstory. I was in um

Mr. C's classroom and I was just observing and I noticed he was making these cool wonderful things with the 3D printers and I was like well why can't I do that? Why can't my class do that? I have applied skills special needs and I believe in inclusion. I believe DEI still exists. As a matter of fact, if I'm correct, it was our motto three years ago that we ran off of. Yes. >> So he said, "Well, why not?" >> So we frontloaded the children. We showed them 3D videos. I gave them a test which they all passed and um not every student is able to go in but on our board over there will point to it. He'll show you that everyone was still represented. So we have every single name of every person that

participated and I would like to thank my wonderful paris >> because without them >> the class would not run especially Sharon who's our resident artiste and Miss Corba who made our shirts. >> Oh wow. >> A thank you [applause] All right. >> So, anybody who wants to go and check out all the awesome things that team 146 made is over there. And also on behalf of all the secondary schools, I'm going to be presenting to donate to 41 Williams the letters SC and H, which is a collective project amongst all of our secondary schools. They were made and designed uh by our students. Um so, it would be it's my honor to present that to this uh this building and this board and the district. Absolutely. We accept it humbly. We appreciate each and every

one of you. And uh I even got this hat at the makers fair. One of the students made it for me within a day. So I wear it proudly. [laughter] >> So Mr. C, you are an incredible man. >> Oh, don't don't make me blush now. [laughter] DON'T MAKE ME BLUSH NOW. REALLY? NO, it's all all thanks goes out to the mansion and to our our >> But someone had to take the lead. >> Yes. [clears throat] And you took the lead on this. >> Oh, well. All right. What do you want for Christmas? [laughter] >> I know. I know. It takes a village, but someone still has to lead that bill. >> Thank you. I appreciate that. [laughter] >> All right. Thank you guys so much. It was a pleasure and honor. MakerFair is

going to be back next year. And uh now that we know it's going to be a successful event, we're going to keep on building it. Thank you. [music] >> Let's do a photo. >> Yep. >> Oh, and there's also one more video. As you can see, uh Dr. Goodlo had some recorded footage. >> Oh, Dr. Goodlo. Okay. Yes. got ahead of ourselves. [music] >> My name is Dr. Johnny Goodlo Jr. and I'm the principal of Edgars Middle School here in the school city of Hamilton. Right now we are at the STEM fair here at Bordon High School. We got robots in action. People are selling plants, bell [music] peppers, and tomatoes and things of that nature. Got some crocheting, got some of the arts here. It's just a robust abundance of things. We're [music] preparing

kids for a future that they don't even know exists yet. And so when we get these types of skills in STEM and and robotics and science and and the arts or what have you, you touch that creative mind and that creativity [music] takes them to a future that is unknown to us right now. And we give them those skills to be successful in that future. [music] >> Thank you. [applause] >> Wow. >> Oh, there's our gift. >> Remember we saw that at the makers? >> That took a lot of work. Yep. >> We certainly appreciate it. Where where we're going to put it, Mr. Selenas. >> We'll find a very prominent space once Mrs. Weeks gets back and we'll find we'll find we'll make it her job. Yeah. >> Okay. >> Definitely. And we appreciate

it so much. Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> So, let's do a photo op and uh we'll go to the next drop. All right. Thank you. >> [applause] >> All right. Well, I hope your heart can take some more good news cuz we still have a lot more to celebrate. >> All right. So, um, thank you again, Mr. C, and to all of the, uh, governors at the mansion. Very, very proud of you and all of our secondary schools. Thank you for making this fair a very successful event. going to go ahead and turn it over now to Trusty uh Garrett who's going to give us a Hammond Council PTA update. >> All right, that's going to come down here because I'm not alone today. Um we have the Wizards in the house.

We have the Wizards in town. Um all of our elementaryaries got a visit from them today and man were those kids excited. Um, I did want to Were you able to No. Okay. Video didn't pop up, but uh one of one of the players I know made made some made some promises. [laughter] Those kids were very excited. So, if your kids came home and talked about seeing a wizard today, we've got videos. We've got photos. I'm pretty I think at least four or five of the schools I've seen already post pictures on their Facebook. Go look at them. We have four, it's six players actually go to the different schools. Um, and then we've got their road manager, Mr. Jamal, um, here with us today. You want to come up? Give him give him [applause]

the a big school sing and welcome. And I'm going to turn over the mic to him because I am done talking. [laughter] >> Well, thank you. Um, I like I I want to speak to everybody. Uh, um, I just want to say it's an honor to be here. It's a definitely an honor to see all the kids and all their accomplishments. So, let's give all these kids a round of applause. [applause] >> Yes. So, the kids the kids inspire me and like she said, my name is Jamal Thompson. They call me the voice of the world famous Harlem Wizards. This is my 28th season traveling around the world doing basketball fundraisers with different communities. So, it's definitely exciting to be here in Hammond and uh to watch all these young kids with all this science

and robotics and all this tech stuff that's going to lead us into the future. What I'm going to say to the young people that I see today, keep inspiring for greatness. You guys are the reason why your parents and your loved ones get up each day to push you guys to be great. So, once again, I'm just want to say I'm honored. Now, about the event. We're going to be at the Civic Center on Thursday. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30. And if you never heard of the world famous Harlem Wizards, this is what I can tell you. We bring a mixture of comedy, music, dancing, tricks, slam dunks. We shoot basketballs from the crowd, from half court. And in any professional entertainment industry that I've went to watch, whether it

be music, basketball, [music] football, baseball, no one is as handson as we are. We sign autographs pregame. We sign autographs at halftime, and we sign autographs immediately following the fourth and final quarter. So, you will have an opportunity to meet your favorite wizards, take photos and videos with your child as they get their Harlem Wizard souvenir items signed. And that's what I feel separates us from the rest. So, thank you everyone. I appreciate you guys having me and I love this this community. I've been riding around all day today. I've been working. I went to Jay's Club restaurant. I had some great food there. I um I went to Michael Jackson's house at 2300 Jackson Street. [laughter] I I done took video. I'm just telling you. So the I'm not the one that's going to

be in the room. The other guys are the young guys, but the old guy went into the community. I was riding around and figuring things out. I even went to the minor league baseball stadium as well. So thank you. Thanks again and I'm excited to be here and I hope to see all of you on Thursday night. W [applause] [applause] >> Melissa, how do we get tickets? We can get them at the door if we don't do the QR or um >> Why don't we come >> I mean trusty gear. I'm so sorry. >> On www.hallandwizards.com. You can purchase them right on our website. >> Okay. >> Just pull up the hammer game. It's on our website. You get them on there or you can purchase them at the door. Right. We've got the QR

code to that website on every flyer we've put out. Um I know it went out on Parent Square today. The direct link was sent. Um they will be available at the door. $2 more for um yeah, $2 more for them. Just know there's like five courtside seats left. So if you wanted one of those, get that. Um yeah, we we are we are very very excited. that I saw. I wasn't at Burns Hicks today, but I got sent a series of photos [laughter] of if you've seen our Mr. Suarez back there and how tall he is, that man is over six foot tall and one of their players is even taller and he jumped straight over that man. [laughter] Um, we I saw one of the players that was with us, he he was shooting

backwards from half court and and made it one point. So, they they uh they keep the kids entertained and that's that's what we're here for. So, >> we appreciate you, Trusty Guerrero, wearing those two hats. I know it's not easy, but you've done an incredible job with you. Let's give her a big round of applause, please. [applause] Mr. Selenus, >> thank you very much. Thank you very much. Uh, I just wanted to mention that again, the Harlem Wizards are in town and they will be competing against our very own City of Hammond and School City of Hammond players. If you are in the audience right now and you are going to be playing on Thursday, please stand up. Please stand up. Please stand up. Please [laughter] stand up. >> Look at that. Look at all

the representation. [applause] Wow. >> Yes. We are going to have a good time [laughter] on Thursday. All right. >> All right. >> Get your knee pads. Get your icy hot out. [laughter] >> Right. Get those. Make sure you're ready. Start stretching. It's going to be a good time. >> And trusty Stanford. And >> we still have some more people that are going to be announced. Right. >> We will be the vintage cheerleaders. So, if you really want to laugh, come check us out >> for sure. >> Vintage. >> Very good. >> Vintage. [laughter] >> Vintage. Okay, believe it or not, we do got to get back to business. >> Yes. >> So, here we go. All right. Next, we're going to be moving on to our first period of public expression. Uh, Trusty Stanford. >>

All right. [clears throat] We have one speaker today, Dr. Michaela. [clears throat and snorts] Good evening everybody. Um, I think it's fantastic like just to hear all these wonderful positive things and to see like in the rest of the world it feels like all the color and the joy and the creativity and the artisticness is being, you know, they're trying to wrestle it away from us, but here in the school city of Hammond, it's just like flourishing. It's beautiful to see that there's still such an emphasis on, you know, performance and art and creativity and all the cool parts of science they will never understand, including robotics. Um, and it's wonderful to see these things that can get our kids excited about learning and show them what learning can be and show them what school

can be. And that's fantastic. Um, I also wanted to say like I was really really happy to have like a financial report tonight because I' I've been missing the financial reports. Um, I do I feel like it was nice to have the overall summary. It was nice to see kind of where things are. Um, I do feel like there's parts of school stuff and school corporations that are sometimes hard for like parents or teachers or everybody in the community to really like understand. I think one of those is like investment stuff, financial like the board of finances stuff, um, and like building corporation stuff and all of that. So, like I know every time money is involved, you know, people are always concerned because they want to make sure everything's healthy and good. And I

think the more detail or transparency and on top of that, you know, in terms of giving like just full details on everything, but also just accessible resources to help with like that community member parent education part around things. Um, I think that would be really great. Um, for people who were curious about what is the the board of finance piece of things, uh, I believe that is actually found in title five of all places because it's something that's required of every taxing unit, right? Local taxing units. Title five, article 13, chapter 7, and I think it's somewhere in the middle is when you start to get into kind of the specifics of that and why we even have that. And so for people at home who are like, oh, what what's all this big financial

stuff? You know, I think it's always good most like school corporations, you know, run by like one fiscal calendar that doesn't always align to a school calendar, right? And it but it does align to our, you know, conventional calendar. So these kinds of things, it's good to just kind of have as much information as possible. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> That's all for first session, >> Mr. Selenas. Our next agenda item is unfinished business. There is no finished business at this time. So, we will move on to the minutes. Trustees, uh, what's your pleasure for the approval of several minutes here? [clears throat and cough] Executive session minutes, November 4, 2025. Executive session minutes, November November 18th, 2025. Executive session minutes, December 16th, 2025. Uh board members, regular school board member minutes, November 4,

0562025, uh November 18, 2025, December 2nd, 2025, and December 16, 2025. I have a motion for approval. Madam President, >> Trusty Canelera, >> I move for the approval of items A through C. The approval of executive session minutes November 4th, 2025, November 18th, 2025, December 16th, 2025 as presented. >> Do a second. It's been been moved and properly seconded by Trusty Guierra for the approval of the executive [clears throat] session minutes November 4th 8, December November 18th, and December 16. Any questions? Any questions? All in favor say I. I. >> Any opposed? Eyes have it. Motion carried. Uh may I have a motion for the remaining uh school board minutes. >> Madame President, >> Trusty Canelera, >> I move for the approval of items D through G as presented. there. The approval of the school

board meeting minutes November 4th, 2025, November 18th, 2025, December 2nd, 2025, December 16th, 2025 as presented. >> You have a second. >> Second. >> It's been moved and properly second by Trustee Guierra that we make the approval of our schoolboard minutes. Uh, excuse me. [clears throat] All in favor say I. >> I. >> Oppose. Eyes have it. Thank you very much, >> Mr. Celinas. >> Thank you. Our next agenda item is the consent agenda. >> Trustees, before us, we have our consent agenda items A through G. What's your pleasure, >> Madam President? >> Trusty Gara. >> I move for the approval of [clears throat] consent agenda items A through F as presented. >> Second. It's been moved and properly second for the approval of our consent agenda items A through F. Are there any questions?

>> I would like to read the accounts payable docket register. >> Go ahead, trustee. >> Accounts payable voucher register dated January 20th, 2026 consists of 398 pages. Total claims 8,983,362.90. Total payroll 5,9,655.77. >> Thank you. Are there any any other questions? All in favor say I. >> I. >> Oppose. Eyes have it. Motion carried. Mr. Selenas. [clears throat] >> If uh if I may ask for permission, I would like to call up uh Mr. Suarez who would like to make an introduction related to our personnel report. Uh Mr. Suarez, if you could please come up to the podium. He will be introducing a newly hired employee to the school city of Hammond. >> Good afternoon. >> During uh when I first got this position, I was asked to do a lot of stuff pertaining to

uh truency, but it got to be a lot. So we went ahead and got approval for the state's requirement to have a truency officer as well as a school safety specialist to oversee truency concerns at our schools. So went through interviews process uh interviewed a lot of gentlemen and ladies and upon our decision uh we'd like to introduce Mr. Shawn George and I'll let him explain a little bit about his uh career. There you go. All right, thanks John. Um, hi. My name is Sean George. I'm just um really excited to be here. Uh, prior to coming to school city, I worked in Hammond as a police officer for 25 and a half years. I've lived in the city for about uh 29 years. Um, involved in the community uh with with coaching with um

my children um baseball, basketball, soccer. Um, so working with kids is not going to be anything really new for me. I've worked from all all ages, young ones, teenagers. Uh, I make a joke with my wife. I say I'm like the perennial room mom at the school because I'm always I'm always at the different events. I've been to name the museum. Uh, name the zoo. I I've been uh I've been to all of them and uh it's just I get a kick out of it. I get a kick out of being with the kids. Um, this is new for me. Again, like I said, I was police officer for all those years, but I feel I'll be a good fit. Um, used to working with people, um, when they're always not at their best. And

my goal is to, uh, you know, as I progress and learn the job is to, um, you know, do what I can, work with the schools and the parents just to get figure out how we can get the kids back in school. >> Excellent. >> Thank you. >> Welcome. >> Thank you. and welcome aboard. [laughter] >> He's uh he's been going to different schools already and uh introducing himself to his staff. So I glad we have the opportunity so that he can introduce himself um through our uh school process here so that people are aware of who he is. But uh he's got a lot on his plate, but hopefully we'll see some good results. Thank you. >> Absolutely. We appreciate you, sir. Thank you. [applause] >> Thank you, Mr. Suarez. And welcome, Mr. George.

And just so the community knows, there are a lot of uh updated expectations related to attendance through the Indiana Department of Education. And so we do look forward to making sure that this is a uh strategic partnership with our community so that we can support families uh in making sure that students get to school every day. >> Thank you. >> Uh our next agenda item is new business. [clears throat] >> Item A, approval of agreement for renewal with Quadiat. Claudia, >> Mr. Lyn, did you move? >> Sure. >> Okay. [laughter] >> I was waiting for Trusty King, but I No, that's okay. >> I'm just I'm was finding Okay, thank you. >> I read Trusty Stanford's lips, right? >> It's like, what is it? All right. So, Quadian basically is just the renewal of the

postage m machine lease. Um, and so again, this we did some uh homework and made sure that we were fiscally responsible and uh made a deal with the correct uh the least expensive company uh that was going to be helping us with our postage machine. And so what happens there is all of the schools will send any postage that they have over to the central office and we will be able to get those um documents over to our community. And so it's just renewal of that lease. >> Thank you. and more centralized >> and more centralized instead of being at different buildings. Correct. >> Absolutely. >> Thank you very much. What's the pleasure of the board? Do >> you have a motion? >> Madam President, >> trustee Cara. >> I make a motion for the

approval of the agreement renewal with Quadant. Quadant. >> Second. >> It's been moved and properly second that we approve the agreement renewal with Quadette. Are there any questions? Any questions? All in favor say I. >> I. opposed. Eyes have it. Motion carried. Okay. Our next agenda item here for approval. Uh the approval of agreement with Rooted Linguistics LLC. Mr. Selenus. >> Yes. So this is uh submitted through our language development program and will be funded through our title 3 grant. And so this is uh a partnership where the purpose of this contract is to provide training sessions for educators and instructional pair of professionals to develop a deeper understanding and strategies to teach literacy and writing in the context of English language development. So again this is a u a consultant who will be coming

to the school city of Hammond working with our uh language development staff and it will be funded through the title three grant. >> Thank you. Do I hear a motion? Madam President, >> Trusty Guerrero, >> I move for the approval of the agreement with Rooted Linguistics LLC. >> Second. >> It's been moved and properly second that that we approve the agreement with Rooted Linguistics LLC. Any questions? Any questions? All in favor say I. >> Any opposed? Eyes have it. Motion carried. And our final agenda item under new business is the approval ofou between Franciscan Health Monster and Area Career Center. Mr. Selenus, >> of course. So for this one, I think I'm going to call Mr. Hicks to help me out with this. Mr. Hicks, please. >> Thank you. >> Good evening, Madame President, uh,

school board trustees, uh, Superintendent Selenus. So this is something that we have agreements with outside partners. Uh one thing that we do have within the school city of Hammond and the Hammond Area Career Center District 2CTE um is we have partnerships with entities that give us approval for our students to receive certain certifications. Uh this one is specific for our emergency services pathway through EMT or or paramedics as we know it. Uh so our students, believe it or not, do have the opportunity while they're in high school to receive uh training, learning uh to be licensed as a certified paramedic or EMT professional. Um albeit the age requirements and the certain standards for the state. So it's a great opportunity and with that opportunity, we do have our uh overseeing body that is able to

do this uh in conjunction with state uh direction and approval. So, uh, we would highly recommend, uh, this as approval as it is a great opportunity for our students and and community. >> Thank you, Mr. Hicks. >> Thank you. >> Uh, do I hear a motion? >> Madam President, >> Trusty Gara, >> I move the approval of theou between Franciscan Health Monster and the area Career Center. >> Second. >> It's been moved and properly second that we approve theou between Franciscan Health Monster and Area Career Center. Are there any questions? Any questions? All in favor say I. I. >> Any oppose? Eyes have it. Motion carried. >> Upcoming board meetings. The next one. Second hand. Our upcoming board members. Tuesday board meetings. Tuesday, February 3rd, executive session. 5:15 p.m. Administration Center. Tuesday, February 3rd, special

meeting. 6 pm administration center. Uh, Tuesday, February se 17th, executive session, 5:15 p.m. administration center. And Tuesday, February 17th, school board meeting, uh, 6 p.m. administration center. And remember, uh, these dates [clears throat] can change. And I always add to this, please listen. Third Wednesday of every month, we're on WJO um, applauding our our accomplishments of our students and staff. So, please listen in at 9:05 a.m. WJ OB123 a.m. radio station. That's the that the calendar. Okay, Mr. Selenus. >> Our next item is our second public expression. Um, Trustee Stanford. >> Thank you. Our first speaker is Linda Randolph. >> Good evening. Linda Randolph, 4437 Alder Street, East Chicago. I just wanted to take this opportunity to let you know you're appreciated this month and all year long. Since I retired in 2007, I have

been to several board meetings, have worked with several superintendent, and I have watched your growth. I uh during my time with the state department for five years, I watched them watch Hammond and I have been amazed at how you guys have come together, calm the waters and continue to work hard on behalf of the children in Hammond. So again, I salute you. Thank you. >> Thank you. [applause] [cheering] Thank you. >> Next speaker, Robert Benois. Good evening friends. >> Miss King with a lovely hat. [laughter] >> My name is Robert Benoy. I'm here tonight representing Ham Hammond Alumni Association. Okay. With me is Arianne Smith, the new president of Ham Hammond and Alumni Association. Our good friend Jeff Colby has finally stepped down and thank God Aryan has stepped in to bring us a little

freshness to our group. [laughter] The Hammond Alumni Association started with two Hammond grads getting together w with friends for a round of golf or a little tailgating to sporting events, informal mini reunions. It was through these gettogethers at Old Friends the idea of giving back to the community we were from. The idea was to start a group through fundraisers we could start offering college scholarship money to high school grads from Hammond. This started the Hammond Alum Cats. Since then, we have given out scholarships every year. With the closing of the other high schools in Hammond, the alumats changed their name to the Hammond Alumni Association two years ago, which accepts members from all of the former high schools in a show of community spirit. While our group is small, maybe only six or eight people

at a meeting. Our support group reads like a who's who from the city of Hammond. restaurants. Everybody's pitched in really well to help us out on our various fundraisers. This association, like others, fights for donations because we know we're doing what we're doing will help to make a better and more highly educated community. And here's where the problem lies. Last year through our fundraiser, we made around >> [snorts] >> $16,000 was the balance we were carrying. Of that money, we had five applications from the two high schools. Of that, we gave away three $1,000 scholarships. And this is why Arian and myself are here this evening. When I heard about the group only giving out three scholarships last year, I came up with a three-point plan to peel back the onion to help remedy the

situation. Hammond City Council, Hammond School Board, and the principles of Hammond Morton and Central High School were visiting here today because of the reasons that kids are not filling out scholarship forms. Why are they not filling them out? Are the faculties of the high school not pushing hard enough on getting the kids involved in the process? Our next step will be to talk to the principles of two high schools and find out what this is. This group made $16,000 last year and gave away 3,000. We want to give away every penny every year. We need your help because now people are starting to say the Hammond kids don't want our money. Let's take it to the county level, the Lake County alumni association. >> But I know darn well that there is a bigger need

for scholarship money in the city of Hammond than there is in the Lake Central or Crown Point school systems. >> Thank you folks. [clears throat] Thanks for listening. >> Thank you, sir. We hear you loud and clear. Uh if you wait after the meeting, get with Mr. Selenas and we will certainly address your concerns. >> Can I can I add one? >> Go ahead. >> Are you next? >> Um >> this is >> there's your G. >> Yes. Uh so for the teacher at Morton uh that had the the makers uh foundation uh we decided that we wanted to donate $500 to the donation to the to their to what they're doing because to the makers. Yeah. >> So if somebody can get a hold of him so that he can get a hold of

us, you know, we could definitely make that happen. >> Okay. We appreciate you. >> But Mr. Any comments or questions afterwards? >> Thank you, sir. Don't be a stranger. >> Arianne, aren't you next on our list? >> Oh, okay. So, you don't need you don't need additional time. Everything's okay. >> All right. Dr. Michaela, you're next. Good evening. So, I'm really glad somebody brought up scholarships and the reason why kids don't go for scholarships or where where that disconnect is because this is something I feel particularly passionate about too cuz we have a ton of scholarship opportunities over in Gary too like like we devote a ton of time and resources to putting it out there and then nothing really happens. And one of the the the the problem as I see it there there's

two main issues. One of them is the FAFSA. Now under the law now the law changed the schools have to either have the FAFSA completed I think by some particular time in the senior year or have a waiver signed. Now you guys do better than most. I've seen some schools, especially in a little bit more rural areas, who just like act like it doesn't even exist still. But like a lot of parents don't understand what the FAFSA is. A lot of kids don't understand what the FAFSA is. And especially for 21st century scholars, you have to have that FAFSA done. And still, as a state, we're only usually around like 68% 66% FAFSA completion. And that includes our kids that are eligible to be 21st century scholars, which means, you know, sure, I I'd love

to imagine that that means like almost 30% of our kids, 32% of our kids are going out of state to Harvard or something to go to college and just didn't need the money. But that's not the case because they still need the FAFSA for that, too, right? So, we just have a lot of kids that were missing in terms of FAFSA education. Um, and some of the stuff around phones and devices make it harder, right? Because if you're trying to help kids with that in schools, what are you supposed to do if the kid needs the stuff that's on their device and can't get it, so on and so forth. Which brings me to something else I wanted to remind people of. The legislative session is ongoing. There's some terrible bills. There's some okay bills.

And there's some bills that need a lot of work. And the only way that work happens is if people go down state and people say what they need to have happen because one of the things that's they're trying to change again is the cell phone thing. There's some good things about it like oh you know teachers aren't going to be have to be the ones responsible for managing whether or not kids have cell phones anymore. That's great. But then it also brings up issues like this where it's like if kids are supposed to be receiving these resources or parents are supposed to be receiving them and there's supposed to be some kind of FAFSA completion happening, how do we coordinate that? If then we're taking away devices, giving devices, requiring schools to provide devices, it

gets too confusing. So hopefully all of that can be resolved. But the other part is always parent education and making sure your website is helpful. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> That ends the second session. >> Mr. Selenus. [clears throat] >> Good evening everyone. Um before I start my uh superintendent's report for this evening, I'd like to take a second to uh really send a shout out to Mr. Ted Bry. He today transported our wizards all over town [laughter] and transported a bunch of us to several of the games that trusted Geral talked about and he's here tonight because he transported one of the wizards from the hotel to the board meeting. So, let's give him a round of applause. Um, [applause] you know, sometimes you have behind the scenes people that forget to be

mentioned, but if we didn't have people like Mr. Bragg, who was just a team player, uh, we wouldn't be able to have events like this. So, thank you, sir, um for helping out tonight. Uh at this time, I would like to ask [music] if our trustees could please step out of their seats down to the main floor. I will give you a minute to do that. And I would like to call up um Dr. Denise Eisman, Mrs. Lata Smith, Mrs. Christina Sanchez, and Mr. Jeremy Hicks. [clears throat] All right. So January is schoolboard appreciation month and here in the school city of Hammond, we certainly appreciate our school board of trustees and the incredible work that they do on behalf of our students, staff, families, and community. This evening, I along with our community and

educators would like to take a moment to publicly recognize and thank our board of trustees for their continued dedication, leadership, and service. We'd like to begin with Trustee Manny Candeleria. Thank you for your service to our community. Your commitment to student success and your steady leadership continue to make a meaningful impact across our district. Let's give Trustee Manny Candela a round of applause. [applause] Trustee Melissa Gara, thank you for your service to our community. Your advocacy for families and your passion for education strengthen the work we do each day. Thank you, Trusty Gara. [applause] Although she is not here today, Trustee Spencer, thank you for your service to our community. Your thoughtful perspective and consistent support help guide our district forward. Thank you, Trusty Spencer. [applause] Trustee Stanford, thank you for your service to our

community. Your dedication to equity, opportunity, and student achievement is deeply appreciated. Thank you, Trusty Stanford. [applause] and to our board president, trustee Carla Blake King. Thank you for your service to our community. Your leadership, your vision, your unwavering commitment to Hammond students continue to inspire our collective work. Thank you, trustees. [applause] On behalf of the entire school city of Hammond, we thank you for your countless hours, thoughtful decisionmaking, personal sacrifices you make in service of our schools. Your leadership truly makes a difference and we are grateful for your continued partnership and commitment to our district. We appreciate you and thank you for all that you do. Let's give them a round of applause. [applause] one right here and then we'll do one more. Thank you. [applause] Thank you trustees and thank you directors. Okay, I

have a family weather update. >> I'd like to share an important update with our community and our families. Due to dangerously cold temperatures predicted later this week, we are asking our families to please be prepared for a possible synchronous e-learning day on Friday. Possible. Okay, that means that you need to be ready just in case. Um the weather's predicted to be pretty frigid uh Thursday evening going into Friday. So we're going to monitor the weather and make a decision. If an e-learning day is indeed needed, we will communicate with families no later than Thursday of this week. Should this occur, instruction will be live and synchronous for all grade levels. All students should ensure that they have access to a device and are prepared to participate in virtual learning. As always, the safety of our

students and our staff remains our top priority. We appreciate the continued partnership and flexibility of our Hammond families. Once again, we are not calling on e-learning at this time.
