Next item on the agenda is the presentation and recognition of the Hbert Middle School BFW Patriots pen winners and the Hbert High School BFW Voice of Democracy winners. Dr. Buffington.
>> That's right. out in the audience, we have really important people that run these programs for us. And um I want to welcome up Jake Paulson and Heather Pollson who actually teaches for us and they're going to talk about the winners. And I don't know who you want to go first, Jake, but come on up and give the audience some information about this contest and then we're gonna ask our winners. Um I see principal out audience along with family members. Thank you all for coming to support our winners. I do want to say I'm sorry to everybody that didn't get to go out to Veterans Park because of the snowtorm. Um for Jake and I who go out there every year, it is like the tundra out there. I don't care if it's 50 degrees
outside, it's cold out there. Um but uh you have an opportunity tonight to read your speeches and we do celebrate you for the hard work that you did. Uh Jake is gonna highlight for all of you um what how you competition, how much further you can go in the competition and I know he has prize monies and then of course we have some recognition for you as well. I apologize. >> Essays for the essay contest for middle school and then speech contest for uh high school students democracy. And this year the uh topic for both was how are you showing patriotism and support your country?
Each year we get submissions >> and this year we had the most ever. So thank you. It was quite a bit. >> It was nice though. It was very nice. So the um first place winner for Patriots pen and voice democracy will go on to district level and they will compete there. If they are selected they get prize money there which last year was quite a bit. $1,000. Um if they make district um first place, they will go on to compete at the state level, they make it to state and win >> national, which is in Washington DC. >> The national prize I think is $30,000. It's one of our core programs in the BFW and glad that the school participates. do we weren't able to do we normally do Patriots pin at Veterans Park
and we had a snowstorm on the day before and uh we just had to cancel. We didn't want the parks department worry about plowing the parking lot. Make sure everything's it would have been a mess. It would have been a mess. That was nasty. So, um third place AA Everyday patriotism. What is patriotism? When you hear that term, chances are you think of waving a flag or watching fireworks light up the sky. Waving a flag does show patriotism. Acts of patriotism are the small things we do every day to show gratitude and support for our country. As an American, I show patriotism every day in many ways. One way I demonstrate patriotism is by continually learning about our country's history and government. Over the past two school years, I have taken classes based on the
Constitution. I'm interested in learning about our system of government and about its history. I am also interested in history of our country. And I'm in a social studies class focused on the United States history. By doing these things, I demonstrate patriotism because paying attention to key parts of our history helps us appreciate how we evolved into the country we live in today. Another way I show patriotism is by showing gratitude towards all who have served our country. As someone who has family members who have served our country, I know appreciating our veterans is important. Although I am too young to have known these family members when they were actively serving, I have heard stories about the sacrifices that they have made. The sacrifices that the brave women and men have made for our country are
not for them. They are truly to protect our freedoms for us and for generations to come. I also show patriotism by constantly being grateful for all the freedoms we are granted by being United States citizens. People of the United States are given many freedoms that people of other countries are not fortunate enough to have. Many people in our country take our freedoms for granted even though millions of people around the world do not have freedoms like we do. I am grateful for the rights of free speech, free free religion, and the right to choose my future and not have it chosen for me. In conclusion, I show patriotism every day in many ways. Things like being grateful for our veterans and guaranteed freedoms and learning about our history are great ways to show patriotism. Patriotism
is not just waving a flag once a year. Showing patriotism is an important part of being an American citizen. This might be a bit too late, but for those of you that have family members or these your students, please feel free to move around the room to get pictures if you would like. Sorry, I apologize. >> We have a second place, Dane Cooper. He's on vacation. >> Yeah. How about Ryan? First place, Ryanzo. A true American. Living in the United States is something I never take for granted. I am proud to show my patriotism and support for our country. Every day I look up to my older brother, a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. He is my role model. the lasting impact he has had on me inspires the way I live
through purpose, respect, and service. He's taught me that these are values every military member, past, present, and future, should carry. Because of him, I've realized I want to be one of those people. Some people, someone who loves their country and defends the rights to of others to live in peace and freedom. Patriotism is more than waving a flag or wearing a uniform. It's about living with meaning, being grateful for our freedoms, and showing respect for those who protect them. We live in peace because of the brave men and women who are willing to risk everything. I believe living each day with purpose means understanding that freedom is not free. When others fight for your freedom, the least you can do is honor their sacrifice by being a good citizen, someone who respects, supports, and serves.
One way I show patriotism is by getting involved in my community. I help at school, volunteering in service hours and activities, and always try to make a difference. Whether it's helping a peer, helping a stranger, or supporting veterans, these choices matter. Being respectful and responsible may seem small, but they are powerful ways to show love for your country. Treating others with kindness is another way I support this beautiful nation. Respect isn't just an option, but it's the right thing to do. I choose to be someone others can count on by helping those in need and standing up for what's right and showing that patriotism means putting others first. When I help someone, I don't need to be credited. As long as I help out, no matter who it is, I feel better for myself. Patriotism
runs deeper than symbols. It's about gratitude, action, and living with purpose. I want to carry that pride forward, not just for myself, but for those who serve and sacrifice. By being respectful, responsible, and dedicated to others, I believe I'm showing my true colors as an American. I'm proud of that every single day. Keep it growing. We have the voice democracy. Third place, Alina Sinclair. The flags on front porches, the pledge kids say in school every day, and the anthem we all stand for. These are all examples of patriotism. Patriotism doesn't have to be big and loud. It can be little things like these. The parades, the fireworks, and the cookouts on the 4th of July are also acts of patriotism. And sure, these acts are louder than the others, but that doesn't mean anyone is
less prideful. Many people feel as though they're only patriotic on the 4th of July and Veterans Day, but that isn't true. It's the little things that allow us to show patriotism in our everyday lives. They may not feel as grand or prideful, but they are. These little acts of patriotism allow us to show pride without having to do something big. Without them, we'd only be able to be patriotic on holidays. These are the ways we're able to show patriotism year round. It might not seem like it, but patriotism is the pride that you have in your country to hang the flag on your porch. It's the way we all stand for the national anthem to show respect. These all scream pride no matter how big or small they seem. And while it can be hard
to show patriotism and support for a country that is so divided, this division makes it more important than ever to show support. It is vital to remember that we are one country despite our differences. No matter what political party or ideology we align ourselves with, at the end of the day, we are all American. People seem to forget that the different political parties have developed a sort of us versus them mentality. It isn't one side against the other, though. We're all Americans working together to achieve a better America. Whether people realize it or not, we're all on the same side. There may be some differing opinions, but at the end of the day, we all want the same thing, a better America for our descendants. That is why I take the time to recognize ways
to show patriotism. Like how I show patriotism when I stand up for the pledge and the national anthem. It also shows pride in my country when I take the time to educate myself on what's happening with our country and our government. I support my When I recognize the flaws in our government and look for ways to fix them, because that is what it is to be American, to work towards the American dream. Things may feel rough or hopeless right now, but that doesn't mean they are. It's okay to be prideful in your country and also hold it accountable. You can be prideful in the core values of our country, even if you don't agree with some of their choices. That is why patriotism is so important and why we all show it. It's why I
do the little things and the big things, to support what our country stands for, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. the very ideals our country was founded upon. I show pride in our country because we are given these rights, these things to fight for and work towards. I do it because I believe in America. It's why we say the pledge in school and play the anthem at every sporting event. It's why we hang flags on our porches and have parades on the fourth. Showing patriotism is so much more than something we do out of obligation. It's something that we do because we mean it. We do it because we genuinely believe in America and its future. We show our support and pride not because we're supposed to, but because we want to. That's the
beauty of patriotism. It's a choice. A choice we make every day when we say the pledge or leave our flags on our porches. Second place, Morgan Cooper. Thank you. America is a country built on the rights of its citizens and the freedoms of all. We remain as a very unique nation in comparison to others. Considering our freedoms, these fall as a standard to us, the American citizens, but prove to be a right that few others have. America prospers from the amount of people who choose to build their lives here and achieve the American dream. Our country was built on the foundation of diversity and freedom for all. This is why I feel America stands as being so unique in its culture and community. To me, freedom is the ability to wake up in the morning
and make something of yourself. In other parts of the world, life is more sterile. There's less that one can do to create a career and an image for themsel. America prospers in freedom as nobody is set on doing what one thing. One could attend college or not. One could get married or not. One could pursue a specific career or not. America prides itself on its freedom for good reason. His liberty is not something that is easily found in other parts of the world. Our country gives rights to those who would otherwise not have them. It allows for expression of religion, culture, speech, and academics. America provides promising futures for all who choose to go for them. America has always been great at honoring veterans. American veterans are the key to the success and continued freedom
of American citizens. I feel that not only should America honor those who have served for a day, but pay respect to veterans in any way possible. These brave men and women are the ones who have sacrificed their lives and own freedoms to protect America and its foundation. The pride that America should feel for its veterans is insurmountable. It is an honor to live in the country where freedom is guaranteed and not something that has to be questioned or debated. Diversity is also a driving force behind America's beauty. America is structured on the idea that almost anybody can come here and make something of themselves. This is what I consider to be the American dream. America grants rights to everybody in terms of expression, employment, and dreams. With our Constitution, rights and freedoms are granted to
all American citizens and protected under law and under the aid of our brave veterans. Having family members who served in the military, it isn't hard to appreciate how hard they work for our country. America's proud and confidently displays its pride. The 4th of July, for example, shows how big of a celebration freedom is to Americans. Every year, millions of Americans celebrate by lighting fireworks and showing their pride in their country. Millions of Americans fly American flags on their property, further showing their patriotism. Most of the houses down my street and the surrounding blocks fly American flags from their front porch or from flag poles in the front yard. America also honors recently deceased governors, presidents, and other political figures by flying flags at half mass. This also serves as a way to honor our country
and patriotism. However, the 4th of July is more than just parades, fireworks, and hot dogs. It stands as being a symbolic day of our country's independence. I find it to be very important as it is our country's central day to celebrate our pride and patriotism. Patriotism isn't limited to this day, but as it marks the anniversary of our country's independence, it stands as being the most important day for celebration. To be fair though, what better way is there to celebrate how proud we are of our country and our freedoms than by kicking back and shooting flaming balls of fire into the night sky. In 2026, we are coming up on the 250th year anniversary of our independence, a quarter of a millennium. While America has evolved so much, oops, sorry everyone, I should have printed
this. While America has evolved so much in its history, our sense of pride has always remained the same. It's hard to think that 100 years ago was 1925. Technology has evolved so much in the course of a century. America also serves as being highly innovative in this way. In this way, America has always embraced change, especially when it benefits the American people and American way of life. In summation, I find that America is a beautiful country. It promises positive futures to all. We respect and dedicate time to our veterans, which we should always be proud of. America was built on and still runs on our sense of liberty and justice for all who should find themselves here. Most everything in America is a matter of choice and personal preference. It is not based on what
people should or must do. Instead, America is built on freedom, independence, respect, pride, and above all else, a sense of community. Thank you. Last but not least, first place, Evan Rob. Good evening everyone. Thank you very much for having me me here and giving me this opportunity to share the speech with you. Patriotism isn't just about big grand gestures or loud speeches. It's about the everyday things we do that show we care about our country and the people in it. Sometimes it's as simple as respecting and following the laws. I know that might sound kind of basic, but when we follow rules like traffic laws or local regulations, we help to keep everyone safe. We help keep our communities peaceful and fair. That's a huge part of how a community runs smoothly. And when we
do our part, we're showing respect for the system that holds us all together. Another important way I show patriotism is by volunteering in my community. Giving my time to help others, whether it's cleaning up a park, helping at a food bank, or supporting a local charity, makes a real difference. It shows that I care about the people around me and about making my neighborhood a better place. And when we all pitch in, even in small ways, we build stronger, healthier communities. That's how patriotism works on a local level. It's about helping the people you see every day. Learning about the history and culture of our country is another way I show my support. It's important to understand where we come from so we can appreciate the freedoms we enjoy today. When I learn about the
struggles and sacrifices made by those who came before us, like the fight for independence or the civil rights movement, it helps me realize how lucky we are. National holidays like Independence Day and Memorial Day aren't just days off. They're reminders to honor those sacrifices. Taking part in celebrations or ceremonies on these days is a way to remember our country's past and the values it stands for. Voting is another big part of being a responsible citizen. It's about how we make our voices heard and influence the future of our country. Now that I'm 18, when I vote, I plan to do it thoughtfully. And I encourage everyone around me to do the same because voting is one of the most powerful ways to support our democracy. The choices we make at the ballot box shape the
laws and policies that affect our daily lives. Respecting the flag in the national anthem is also an important way to show patriotism. The flag isn't just a piece of cloth. It's a symbol of unity and strength of our nation. Standing for the national anthem or showing respect for the flag reminds us that no matter our differences, we're all part of something bigger. It's about honoring what our country represents. freedom, opportunity, and justice. Speaking of differences, one of the things I appreciate most about our country is its diversity. We come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. That diversity is one of our greatest strengths. When we respect and celebrate these differences, we help create a more inclusive and united country. Patriotism doesn't mean we all have to think the same way or agree on everything.
It means working together despite those differences to build a better future for everyone. In addition to all these actions, patriotism is also about being proud of what we achieved as a country while recognizing where we can still improve. No nation is perfect and ours has its challenges. But true patriotism means speaking positively about our country while also working hard to make it better. It means standing up for what's right, helping those in need, and treating others with kindness and respect. Even in small acts like helping a neighbor or being responsible in our daily lives add up to making a difference. Patriotism also means having the courage to face our nation's flaws honestly. It's easy to only celebrate the good parts. But real love for one's country includes the willingness to acknowledge mistakes and learn from
them. When cit citizens take action to make things fairer or more just, they're not being unpatriotic. They're helping their country live up to its highest orals. Whether it's supporting policies that protect the environment, advocating for equality, or standing up against injustice, these actions all show deep love and commitment to the nation's growth. Another part of patriotism is passing that sense of responsibility and pride to future generations. Teaching younger people about civic duty, respect, and compassion ensures that these values continue to shape our society. When children learn to care about their community, their country, and each other, they grow up ready to contribute in meaningful ways. Patriotism becomes not just a feeling, but a way of living. One that connects people across time, culture, and background through shared respect and purpose. In the end, patriotism isn't
defined by one single act or moment. It's built from the choices we make every day. It's in how we follow the rules, serve our communities, respect our history, and strive to improve the nation we call home. It's about loving our country enough to make it better for everyone who lives here. When we act with respect, compassion, and responsibility, we strengthen the bond that holds our nations together. That's what true patriotism means. Caring deeply, acting thoughtfully, and working better, working together to build a country we can all be proud of. Thank you. Know the feeling the feeling. I do want to just mentioned a couple of things about uh about Jake and the VFW and Heather. I mean, first of all, to hear that this was the largest amount of participation from the school city of
Hobert really says a lot about patriotism in the community of Hbert. And then I would also just say people don't know how much time Jake and Heather put in on this. And so, um, we are truly grateful that you volunteer. They volunteer endlessly at the BFW on all kinds of things, but this takes an enormous amount of their time. And so, Heather, thank you for keeping the teachers on their toes when you're sending out the information for participation, uh, judging, getting people where they need to go. Uh, Jake, thank you for your service. Um, Jake, uh, tremendous veteran, captain, and right, I got it right, commander. Sorry, I missed it. Sorry. But anyways, um he you know he was uh a a pilot. >> Okay. Well, where did I get that from? I don't know,
Jake. I don't know. You could correct me later. But anyways, I know he's a great patriot. How about that? Um, but anyways, he uh does an amazing job at the VFW as all of our veterans do and we're just sorry that we couldn't be out at Veteran Spark because even if it's cold or not, they're all out there and we owe them everything. And so, thank you, Jake, for your service and make sure that you tell everybody at the BFW how much we appreciate their service and our freedom that they've provided for us along with their families. Yeah. So, we're going to get a group photo. Can you guys get together real quick? And we're really proud of of your speeches. You did an awesome job. >> Oh, we'll get yours for you. Does your
mom have No, I'm good. Yes. >> Yeah, we should thank our sponsors. So, our principal obviously Nikki uh Craig and Colleen uh Craig Oika, Colleen Newell, uh Katie Albert is our sponsor uh at the middle school and then Kathy Nelson is our sponsor here at the high school. Lots of coordinated efforts, but Heather, you pull it all together, girl. We know that. >> Yeah. Thank you very much. Excellent. >> At least there were no bells. >> Board, are there any comments? >> Great job. >> Excellent speakers. >> Not only was their writing excellent, but their presentation. >> They were amazing. >> Thank you to Jake and Heather, too, for your devotion to this. We appreciate it so much. And to those of you that had school tomorrow or those of you that don't have school
tomorrow and would like to leave, this is your exit. >> Congratulations. >> Good job everyone. >> She's gonna write a dissertation so that it 21 years in the Air Force. See, I remember that. >> It does not matter because God bless you guys. Take care. Byebye. Thank you guys. >> Thank you again. >> Thank you so much. >> Bye. >> All right. Resolution Indiana Bond Bank 2026 Advanced Funding Program. Mr. Longer, if the resolution is on the screens, is it okay if I read the title? >> It is >> perfect. Resolution number 2025-34, a resolution authorizing the school city of Cobbert to make temporary loans to meet current running expenses for the use of the referendum operating fund of the issuer in anticipation of and not in excess of current taxes levied in the year

I'd like to make a recommendation that the board approve resolution 2025-34 as presented and include with set approval permission to advertise the required notice of sale of warrants. >> We have a motion and a second. I'm assuming Mr. Longer that we can do just the title again. >> That is correct. >> Thank you. School City of Hobart resolution number 2025-35 appropriation resolution. >> Like to make a motion that the board approve resolution number 2025-35 as presented. >> Second. >> We have a motion and a second. Mr. Casp >> I >> Mr. Rogers >> I >> Mr. Keane >> I >> Mr. Schultz >> I >> Mrs. Hill
>> I >> and Mrs. Guthrie votes I that is a 6 vote. Thank you. And the next item on the agenda is a recommendation to accept the Indiana Department of Education alternative education grant. Dr. Buffington, in your packet, you have a copy of the distribution notice uh highlighting what they will be they will be giving us for alternative education. As Pat reminded me, I never turn down money as you do not turn down money. Um but do note that one of the most important programs for at risk is being funded at a total of $36960. Last year the district received $15,158. Since I have been superintendent, this has gone down significantly. We used to be able to pay for a director and at least a teacher and that's what we're getting now included in the
write up so that you could see the description that we were given from the department of ed year like we don't have tight budgets and as a result many agencies saw significant cuts. One of the cuts to the Indiana Department of Ed's budget was the alternative education line item. The 25 through 27 budget includes a 766,74 annual appropriation for alternative ed which will specifically support children in recovery from alcohol or drug abuse at schools accredited by the National Association of Recovery Schools. We looked up. Um, first of all, if that's what you're doing with the money, that's admiraable. We would want to see anyone that has any type of substance issue get the help that they need. Um, none of us were aware of the National Association of Recovery Schools. Um, but again, um, we
support that. After calculating distributions for the schools accredited by the National Association of Recovery Schools based on their current enrollment, we have remaining funds which may be distributed to all the alternative education programs that submitted their FTA FTE student report for 2425 and the allocations are calculated at 1680 for FTE and are based on our 2425 academic year report. And so our grand total is $36960. So because we do not not take money, um I would ask the board to accept that grand total of 36960 for our alternative ed. >> I'd like to make a motion that the board accept the Indiana Department of Education alternative education grant as presented and authorize the superintendent to execute the necessary documents for the grant. We have a motion and a second. Is there any discussion? At the
old school, we had a director and three teachers in that program and majority of it was paid for by um by the state because they view this as such a valuable program helping the most atrisisk students. Um, I would just say with all the cuts that everybody has had to make, I don't see how they think people can run alternative education programs. Now, mind you, you know, we all have lofty goals to get our students to graduate and to choose a career path. These are the students that struggle, right? And so, it would probably have to find a different because you can't pay for all of >> its less money supervisors and staff for $100 a year. >> Well, that pass, right? That lots of Oh my goodness. Um we now pass 6. Thank you
board for that. All right, we are up to updates, announcements, and reports. Dr. Buffington. >> All right. In your packet, you have a copy of our weekly agendas to staff, and you have the Brick Center newsletter highlighting all of our athletics and um you know what a great finish to the football season. And hats off to our team. Um it was definitely a defensive game and they played their It was just spectacular. >> Next item is the upcoming activities and events. >> All right. Well, we have the mobile vaccine clinic. Well, it was here, I shall say. And then on November 30th, Mini Makers Market. Um we're advertising after the city. Um it's a great family event. And then on December 3rd, we'll have the high school career fair in the fieldhouse. Um if you
do know of employers that would like to do that, um please let me know and we'll send them the notification that they can fill out. That is in our newsletter. We've had it on social media. We had a great showing last year from employers. And so again, we would seek any type of help you could help us with. Great. And maybe Zach could come. >> He's coming. >> Okay. Excellent. >> He's already been assigned that job. >> Excellent. >> All righty. Our next item is the updates, announcements, and reports with the information of the change in January meeting dates. >> Well, as you know, um school will not be in session on that first Thursday in January and We do have five Thursdays in that month. So we would like to alter the meeting dates
for January. And so it also falls on New Year's Day. And so I don't think you guys want to join us on New Year's Day. And so we would like to adjust the meetings to January 8th and January the 22nd which will be the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. >> Thank you. >> If Bonnie would make the All right. Next, next item on the agenda is comments. And that would be starting with you, Dr. Buffington. >> All right. Well, it seems like two weeks ago is a long time. It does. >> Um, I would just say I hope that everyone was able to go to the performance um for the last weekend. And um you know Grace after talking with Chris Conor about um your position on this show um I cannot say
enough about the job that you did. >> Thank you. >> Um can you describe just a little bit for the the board what your role was? >> So as stage manager of any production what you do is you call um when things are supposed to happen. So, for example, you guys saw the sneak peek of the show when like their portraits came out. I told the people on rail when to do that. As well as with music cues, I start the music when it's supposed to be started and I go through um different like sound cues when a certain sound is supposed to go off at the right time. And then also light cues. Um majority of our light cues get connected to our sound system, which makes it my job a whole lot easier.
However, we also have spotlight cues where we have physical spotlights and we have people running those and um I tell them when to go, where to go, um and like how long to go. So, from the start of the show to the end of the show, I'm telling everyone what they're supposed to be doing besides the actors. They they have that figured out. Um but I'm just glad that I was able to do I love that show. That was like my favorite show I've ever done. Um, just to be a part of that meant a lot. And I saw how the audience loved it. Every night the audience was participating. Everyone was getting up clapping and cheering along with um the actors. So, it was great to see that. >> Yeah. And um and when
I was talking to Chris, he said they accidentally skipped something and you had to do something different on the sounding board. >> Yes. beautifully and made it look flawless that they didn't miss anything. >> And so that's a lot of pressure up there for such a high production. Yes. And so you did beautifully and I wanted to make sure that we highlighted that for you because that was pretty wonderful. >> And so um what a great performance. Uh I do want to say Audrey Peterson who is our director of the Porter County Career Center. She put on an amazing event for uh women uh middle school ladies, girls um to be able to come out and to it was held at County Line Orchard and it was trying to talk to to girls about maybe
unlikely positions that that women wouldn't think about going into whether it be iron, working for NIPO, being a firefighter, whatever, or being a CEO, right? And so, um, this year I was asked to speak at it. Chris King took really good care of me, set me up, and Bonnie, um, and Becky Williams helped me provide little cookies that said, "Girls that lead can change the world. Go be excellent on purpose." And so, um, I went through what the role of a superintendent is and all the departments that, uh, comprise a school district. And, um, you saw what of parents had sent you an email. But um at the end I had these cookies to pass out and the girls all loved them and so did Audrey Peterson. And when you look, if you saw our
social media page and you could look down and just see all these young middle school girls from Porter County and Hbert just like the entire barn just filled with girls and thank you to all of these people that came out to support them that these are these are positions that they can have as well. And so, um, you saw a lot of girls interested in like Carellis roofing was there and they showed them, um, and they had make it take it sessions where they could learn about about roofing. Um, I do know I told my husband, he's like, "No way I would want my daughter to be on a roof." And I'm like, "Okay." But they showed them harnessing, they showed him everything. And it was really, it was wonderful. There was a little something
there for everyone. And I just um I love the programming that we provide for our students today. Um the electricians uh uh recruitment board was here, one of their representatives and Andy Thomas from the iron workers uh local and we were talking to kids that want to go into the trades. And so I'm thankful for people that they come into the school or we can go to them just to provide people with a look at like I might want to do that. Um Thanks to Chris and Bonnie and Becky for helping me out. Um, I was swarmed at the end by girls. Were you there when they were all trying to get and Chris goes, "I have to get out of here. I'm the only guy and so but other than that, um, I think
that people are approaching the Thanksgiving season with grateful hearts and um, that's truly remarkable that that we have kids that can recognize other kids that are being excellent on purpose due to their kind hearts and um we wish you guys all a happy Thanksgiving and I would say on this side of the table we're looking forward to it as well. Um on behalf of the board and myself I went ahead and gave people the Wednesday our teachers are off Wednesday but I gave the rest of the staff off on Wednesday. Um, I thought it would be necessary that they have that extra day. As well as our teachers, we did do cooking with friends. There's one of my partners in crime out there in the audience, but she's got her earbuds in and she can't
hear. >> Let me I know how to get her. >> Amanda. >> Hi. >> There you go. I'm talking about Do you have any comments about that? What did you go up for? >> So um once again we had our special needs students with us um and um packed room and people think that we don't really we do cook, right? And um the it was a it was a delicious meal. turkey, gravy and mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole and stuffing and pumpkin pie. They all were at their stations. Um, and I will say just I love watching them with special needs, don't you? And they're so loving and caring for those students. That's what I that's what I love about our kids. Um, I will say, and you're gonna laugh at this, they're in line
and I'm watching them. We have we also had cranberry chutney. I'm watching their portions and I'm like whoa wait everybody. I go you guys are taking way too much. We have long line. We have long line here. I mean like their portions were huge. I said we got to make sure everybody gets some and then you can come back for seconds. Weren't their portions large? But anyways, everybody got to come back up for second. And it was like a huge Thanksgiving dinner in uh the Ricky stop. And I wanted to for all the kids that come. Um, it's like we're so used to each other in there, aren't we? We're going and taking things off of other people's stations and, uh, we know how to do clean up, but then they know how to sit
down and enjoy what they've done. And so, um, I wouldn't trade it for anything. And Amanda's always in my group, which is kind of fun because if I get called or something, she can like take over. Um, so I'm really appreciative of her and just the kids that do it. That being said, um, if we can have that much fun with almost 40 people in a room cooking, I wish you the absolute best Thanksgiving because it is joyful. How do you How do you not like food? And if you're looking for that recipe book, it's online or I can send it to you. And I'm with Amanda. That sweet potato casserole is a tradition in my family. The recipe has been passed down for generations and it's delicious. You should make it for his family
now. That's how good it is. >> Remember looking at the recipe. >> Was it the coconut? >> Um Craig does not like coconut, so he does not put it in myself. I can't taste the coconut in it, but it just gives it a little more sweetness. It's good. Amanda got roast. I give you the choice of boiling or roasting. Roasting is much better, richer flavor. >> Good to know. >> Amanda knows that. She may >> Amanda, where is your book? >> You're going to know not to come next time. >> I'll send it to you, >> Mr. King. Every years values our veterans values American. >> Thank you, Mr. Walker. I'll echo everything that Chris said for our student board members. You saw the resolutions on the agenda this evening. We understand that those are
primarily uh bookkeeping matters as far as encumbering funds and transferring funds. Some of the year end things that we do every year to allow us to maximize the bills that are paid out of the funds that are available and the The bills start in January. The tax money we receive starts in June. So sometimes we have to borrow money to be able to pay the bills before June. If I remember correctly, Saturday is the date of memorial services for both McAfee and Connie Maddox. our thoughts will be with their families. >> Thank you, Mr. Longer. Mr. Casp again, I'd like to democracy and uh it's another, you know, a great thing to look forward to every year. I think we do a great job. Heather and Jake do a great job promoting that and getting
our students involved. Um just a couple highlights. We had our education foundation meeting the other day. Um we did officially surpass the $14,000 profit mark from Harvest Homecoming. So that was a great final number. Um, and I think we all decided as a group that keeping it here at the high school and in the great hall um is definitely what we're going forward. Gives us a lot of flexibility and options on if we want to change the change the idea or change the the menu or the time of day or whatever it is. We have a lot of flexibility there. Obviously, we saved a lot of money uh by not having to have that overhead another venue. Also just a a note to everybody um they are Valentine Torres uh announced the last meeting that
she was going to be stepping down as president. Um so she is uh just busy with other things going on with her school and things and um so we have an open position. Um anybody knows of anybody? >> Yes, we would we need a president. >> So other than that I hope everybody has a great Happy Thanksgiving. >> Thank you, Mr. Rogers. >> I totally agree with Chris. It's just amazing how comfortable they feel. >> You know, they're nervous, but you wouldn't know it at all. And it's always it's always a great night, and I'm glad you didn't have to go down this time. I know. >> They were really disappointed. And I just felt terrible about it. You know, you can say, "Oh, you get to come to a board meeting, but There's nothing
like it. I know Mr. Longer is there. He knows what it's like, too. And there's just something about reading your speech and you're seeing them put all of those wreaths out and all of these service people and we're honoring them. And it is. I I feel bad that they didn't get to see it. Um, but we did the best that we could to honor them. And um, you know, there's next year, right? Which by the way, you should have to come because everybody thinks I'm exaggerating. Am I exaggerating? It is crazy down there. I don't know what it is, you guys. If it's just like it is on a hill and I don't know if it's just like >> the wind is always cold. >> Yep. It's always windy. >> But I figure the veterans
were honoring put up with much worse. One year I mean like I insisted that he like take a chair. I was trying to give him my coat and my gloves and because even the kids don't realize I always tell everybody make sure you dress warm when you're going down there. Even if it's 50 degrees, make sure you take a coat. It's insane down there. Um but the number of people that come to that and um the gun um the placing of the reads. Uh we honor them. I'm sorry for them that they didn't have it as well, but that doesn't change how we feel about it. >> You see the grade school students go over and shake the hands of the veterans. >> Mr. King, >> um I again echo everything people said about the
students today. I think they did a fantastic job. and I did go opening night and it was fantastic. Very different perspectives from the kids. My son really liked Juliet. Thought that Romeo was hilarious. He was cracking up in there like so loud because it is kind of quiet. And my my daughter absolutely love the sing. So, but it was fantastic. It was a great show. You guys did a great job. >> Mr. Schultz, >> I have to say the kids were fantastic speeches and the way they delivered them very nice. >> Thank you. All right, you're up. >> All right. I also saw Six and Drop Deadad Juliet and I thought they were phenomenal. I think of al also all the theater shows I've seen so far, that definitely had to be my favorite. I
mean, you know, it was two shows in one, which is awesome. So, I definitely loved getting to see Grace's Lights and everything she put into the show. I know. Um, she worked really hard on that and so so did a lot of my other friends. So, it was really cool getting to see that. And then, actually, I have some exciting news um that I just got notice of. So, my NHS project for Hbert High School just got approved. And this year, um I will be collecting or I will be hosting a toy drive through Unite for Lily for the Payton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. So, the donation box is going to be set up in student services on Monday, but we're collecting gently used or new toys for infants to age 18. So, a
big range there, but the toys will be delivered closer to the holidays. Um, it's just a project that's really meaningful to me, not only because um we're donating toys to a good cause, but also just to bring some holiday joy to the families that are at Payton Mannings this year. So, just wanted to get the word out there and I'm excited for the upcoming break. >> Thank you again for being a mentor. Um, we're seeing some some good things with the freshman. So, thank you again. >> Okay, great. So, first I want to say thank you to everyone for um the compliments on the show and I want to talk about the Veterans Day event that they do their uh speeches at. I go there every year for Wolf Gang and it is one of
my favorite events because I get to see the middle schoolers and I get to remember when I was in that position and I was um you know nervous to do public speaking and things like that and they truly amaze me every year. They they get better and um they obviously put so much love into uh each piece that they have written as well as to see Mrs. Neie so excited to uh have her students be up there and then also to see the veterans realize that um kids my age genuinely do uh like have a love for them and understand the sacrifice that they have given and uh appreciate that because I feel like sometimes it's not always shown and it's not always like shed light on but that event specifically really shows that kids
my age do see that and we do appreciate those things that the veterans do for us. >> Thank you, Grace. I do want to mention um I was at church Sunday and a gentleman came up to me and said Wolf Gang performed for us and so they performed for the veterans in Porter County and he said they were spectacular and I said of course they are. And so thank you for doing that too because you know when you guys do your melody of all of the branches that's one of my favorites and you make them feel special. So, thank you to Wolf Gang for all you do as well. >> I had the pleasure of taking my mother to C6 on it closing night. And one of the things that struck us the most is
the number of students who attended the play. It was a packed house full of students. >> Um, I was blown away. I've never seen that. for the office. So, it's nice to see your peers celebrating all of you and they're interact so interactive. Um, and at one point Anna was done singing. I looked over at my mom. She was wiping away tears. It was just that beautiful. And she wasn't the only one, but Anna grew up across the street from me. So, she was this little girl. We seen on this stage. So all young from kindergarten through 12. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Thank you. Everyone has said it all. Um I also attended six. I attended the Friday night. I went to the But it was beautiful. Um the ladies know how to
belt it out and um just phenomenal show. Always proud of our kids. Our theater kids are doing a phenomenal job. They're always on point. They they're just wonderful. Um and it was great to be able to support them. And to the children that um presented this evening, I think Don said it that you would never know that they were nervous. They carried themselves so well and the words that they spoke really more on point as well. So, happy Thanksgiving to all. We hope you enjoy your time off and we hope you enjoy your time with your That is all I have.
