001All right. We'll call the board to order at this regular board meeting on Monday, April 20th at 6:31. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Smith-Green mission statement is by focusing on excellence in education, providing opportunities for all students to succeed. We strive to be the best small school in Indiana. We'll go ahead and take a moment of meditation. And students all the the cars are also online softball team. They they're going to try to get here. Yeah. They will be sad they missed this. Well, do you want No, we're Oh, well, I guess you know, I'll do everything to make people wait. Yeah. Mr. Gunther. And Mrs. Tab. What are

002we waiting for? We're going to go ahead and do hour one and then they're on their way. They had a softball game of the year is what they said. So. You ready? Done done, Mrs. Tab. Yeah. This is the easy part. You can come over. Yeah, give me a little bit. It's easy. So, do you want to go ahead and learn now? So, a couple months back you guys heard about our science fair. Um extremely thankful for Mrs. Tab. When we were sitting in a we were sitting in a connect meeting and I said, "I really don't want some of these opportunities to go away." Um and Mrs. Tab, like she always does, says, "All right, guess I'm doing science fair today." So, um she took on science fair. We had our regionals for science

003fair. Mrs. Tab can tell us a little bit about about and we're going to celebrate two of our students. One is our kindergartner who finished in first place. So, Mrs. Tab, if you'll tell us a little bit and then I'll ask her a couple of questions about her project. Okay. Um so, basically there's kind of two separate fairs. They go together. So, there is the one that we did at our school first, and I switched it up a little bit this year. I added kind of a competitive category, which is the experiments, which is what Taylor did, and then I added kind of more of a for fun category, like creating a model or creating a collection. So, we had about 33-ish, somewhere around there, kids participate in the school one. And then, there were

00410 that we could qualify to move on to the regional fair. So, the regional fair was at Purdue Fort Wayne, and it's actually run by this I think the science department at Purdue Fort Wayne. So, that was where she got to go, and she got to present her project again. And then, you won some nice money. Send her money yet? No. Taylor, can you tell us Can you tell us a little bit about your project that you presented at Purdue Fort Wayne? Yes. And what was your favorite part about regionals? That the ball dropped. Excellent. We're extremely proud of you. We'll go ahead and do our picture and our certificate, and then Yeah, nice to meet you, please do. Okay. All right, absolutely. You're going to go right there. Yes. Turn around, face that way.

005Can we get the kids to sit back a little bit so they can see? Can you see my hair in the back right there? Perfect. Ah. >> Thank you. That was wonderful. Um staff spotlight, I am very pleased to announce that our very own Mr. Wayne Ryder was selected as our staff spotlight for the month of February. Mr. Ryder, as as I think most of you know, has been a staple around this building for years and he does an excellent, outstanding job year in year out. Knows that building obviously better than anyone around and you know, I keep begging stay, have another year, another year, another year every year. Certainly hate to lose him. I hope that's a ways down the road, but he does challenge me every now and then and it's it's coming

006sooner than you think. So, but anyway, he was nominated by one of our students, Mrs. Aurelia Rutkowski and then this is what he said or she said. He cleans our school and it's very nice. But he does more than that. But again, he's just one of the many outstanding employees we have here at Smith Garden and I'm just so tickled that he was one gentleman that we're able to honor this year. So, congratulations, Mr. Ryder. Before we start celebrations, we have a celebration. Tomorrow is Hal's birthday. So, we wanted to acknowledge his birthday. Absolutely. Thank you very much. Oh, trying to find a knife to cut that open. Thank you. I just wanted to thank you for everything. That's the celebration. I know he's been trying to think of What that is. And then it

007just started, but they let those sites pitch. If you've ever seen first graders pitch. It's awesome. That's what I'm worried about. I can't remember what they were just called. >> Well, why don't we just do the rest of the celebrations? Okay, let's do that. So, we'll start with some mentions in there. Um CEA Archery state champs, uh they continue to impress more and more and more. Um I think the rest can hold off until the end. Okay. Miss Church. Yes, I just wanted to follow up last month I brought Allison Reed and Jillian Wright for student spotlight and told you guys that they had broken records already with their number of scholastic art awards. And I'm pleased to share that for the first time ever in Sherbuss those history, we have one of Jillian's pieces

008won a national medal in the competition that she will go to in New York. So, I just wanted to follow up and let you guys know that was a huge celebration. Um and the rest of my stuff can can wait till my principal does. All right. Um I would just like to uh um did you have anything? Uh I would just like to thank Miss Cook and Miss uh Metter uh for organizing our top 10 luncheon a few weeks ago. Um our top 10 students uh from the class of 2026 that have gotten to uh, gather with their teacher of their choosing, uh, who made an impact on their lives. Um, Uh, this is really a a special and unique, uh, tradition here at Smith-Green, and it's really neat to witness and be a part

009Um, it's really really neat. I would also like to congratulate the Churubusco Rotary Club, uh, and uh, all our generous community members. Um, the 17th of February auction raised over $25,000. Excuse me, over $25,000. So, very impressive and uh, obviously all that money The other thing I'd like to congratulate is uh, Mr. Cam Raber, uh, a senior here at uh, Churubusco, um, was our first ever IHSAA scholarship winner. So, that was last weekend, weekend before, two weekends ago, uh, he and his family uh, went down to Indianapolis uh, to receive his scholarship award. It's pretty neat. He was at the uh, Colts training facility. I'm not familiar with that, but so, pretty cool. It really is. That was first time I was there. Very impressed. So, I'm not sure but it's neat. So, congratulations to

010him. And next is on my gift, but we've got something Sorry, we still have a gift from the day. Everything is scheduled at the same time. Sophie, it's your time. It's your time, Sophie. Stand on up, girl. We're all here for you. All right. So, Miss Sophie's one of our second graders in Mrs. Kathy's class and our other first place finisher in the regional science fair, yes? I guess we won't make Mrs. Tab share the whole But Sophie, would you tell us a little bit about your project that you presented at regionals? Oh, yes. Um we tested who what which one rotted the first. So, um we tried the bread we tried the bread first. But, um we put it on our back door window, but um the chemicals in it it didn't work. So,

011um we tried a different bread, and um it said it worked, and we put it in our back door that time. What did you test though? Which one was rotted first? Oh. We test um we put we put hand sanitizer on one, we put Yeah, hand sanitizer on one. And we washed our hands, and um we touched stuff and then rubbed it on the bread, and and um washed hands, and Which one worked the best? Um soap, warm water, hand sanitizer. hand sanitizer. So, hand sanitizer worked the best. So, in conclusion, what what do you want people to do? Um what What do you want people to do? Wash their hands. Good advice. Miss Sophie, can you tell us your favorite part about THE SCIENCE FAIR? THE FIRST ONE THAT ROTTED. The first one that

012wanted. And that is all I have for celebrations. So now we'll move to the special presentation. Yes, and the February, March, April, and then May, next month, we'll be doing special presentations highlighting our four pillars of the new strategic plan. The four pillars are curriculum and instruction, culture, community, and marketing, and campus. Um So, today Mrs. Lofton gets to present campus, which is finance and facilities. So, without further ado Must I stand or may I remain seated? You can stand. Thank you, Mrs. Lee. Okay, for campus strategic plan goal number one, we are prioritizing financial resources and facility improvements to directly support student learning and long-term district sustainability. Our action steps, after meeting with our group, um is renovation of elementary restrooms, HVAC in the elementary gym, updating curriculum, a sixth-grade transition math teacher, and

013growing our CTE program. For our campus strategic plan goal number two, it's to maintain strong financial stewardship that ensures transparency, efficiency, and community trust. Our action steps are to continue the monthly treasurer reports to the board, ongoing work with policy analytics on our cash flow and best cash practices, participating in state and federal audits, my favorite, and to continue our grants as they help our cash flow in certain areas, which are very beneficial to us. And the third goal for the Canvas strategic plan is to support employee retention and student growth through competitive compensation and up-to-date technology infrastructure. The action steps, once again, is our sixth grade transition teacher and STEM teachers. A 2-year contract with teachers with raises to bring them up to date with the state requirements by the end of the 2026-2027

014school year. We have increased our in-house professional development which helps keep costs down with travel. And our teachers are now reimbursed for their professional development time. We have new laptops and a phone system coming in 2026-2027. And our substitute teacher pay was increased to be more competitive. That's where we are with the budget. Questions? I don't know. Thank you for that. You're welcome. I have a lot more than my paperwork is what it is. I'll send you a copy of it. We're good enough. Definitely. And now would be time for public comments regarding items on the agenda, uh but nobody signed up for that. So, um there'll be no other comments at the end of the meeting if you want to make public comment. Um So, the consent agenda Yes, you looked at the consent

015agenda. Uh what depends on what to bring to your attention is for school fundraisers. One is box sales for the sophomore class. Uh another one would be t-shirts and concession for the archery club. We're at third rank nationally archery club that is. And then, uh also in July we have a theater camp uh with Best Week. Mhm. Any questions? I make a motion to approve the consent agenda as presented. I'll second. All those in favor? Aye. Next, we have the personnel report. And I'd like to draw your attention to several names on there. One is Miss Leanne Arrowsmith, submitted her letter of retirement. Um unfortunately. Um as you know, she's been on um outstanding employee doing amazing things for our elementary. Um she is dearly going to be missed. So. Also, uh change of placement,

016Miss Dr. Baker uh is going from an English teacher to a special education teacher replacing Mr. Huffman. Um we have also on that list is very own very brand new um Miss Tiffany Honey, uh uh principal replacing Mr. Gaff, who by the way is uh at his brother's soccer game. So, that's why he's not here today. Uh we have Mr. Gary Huffman, the um high school special ed teacher has submitted his letter of retirement. Um he's been with us probably what, 3 years now? 3 years. Something like that. Uh but uh outstanding employee, and he's uh has reserved the right to enjoy the his retirement from the core. So, he will be missed, but obviously with Dr. Baker stepping in there. Um a very accomplished, she'll do an outstanding job, and you know, we won't

017lose a big gap. Um also in the house is our new head girls old coach, Mr. Kinsey. Um back then in back then in the new Um we have Mr. Chris Landrum, who's going to be our new second shift maintenance. Uh replacing Mr. Bill Parnell. Um again, as you know, Joe he's going to be another gentleman who's going to be dearly missed. He's going to be in his retirement right now though. Um we're hoping that he'd be able to come back, but unfortunately that just wasn't the case. So, he's being moved into this room in there. Also, I'm pleased to announce Mr. Hunter Perlick, our new head boys basketball coach, is in the house. And uh I just got word the other day that he will be back on the docket in May as Miss

018Church offered him a teaching job, a science position, um and he has accepted to work. So, we're going to have her not only as our head basketball coach, but also in the building. Um I think anytime we can get coaches in our building, it obviously helps those programs and uh just helps build those relationships with our student athletes. Um and then, Mrs. Ashley Cole, a change of placement from a third grade teacher to our new sixth grade transition teacher. So, we're excited about that. So. Any questions? No, thank I'll make a motion to accept the question on the floor. I'll second that. All those in favor? I. Hey! Congratulations. Actually, this I had my high school English teacher replacing Dr. Bender on there, too. Oh. I apologize. She's in the back of the room right

019now. It's what? You're official. You're official. I apologize. Um do you want to real quick raise your hand so that I can see you? I apologize. You were on there, so you're official now. So, anyway, I apologize. That's my mistake. But, anyway, speaking of congratulations, it's very exciting. Coaches, I'll get you on the way. Anybody want to say anything before we move on? We certainly don't feel like you have to. I'm looking forward to being part of the Chaparral team and we're really hopeful. We'll play. I was going to say you brought quite a following today. I think I lost so much sleep working on that. Yes, we are asking for approval of the 2016-2017 CPS parent-student handbook. The first reading was last March. This is the second reading. To my knowledge, no changes have

020been made since the first reading. Correct? I move and I motion to approve. Do we have any questions about the handbook? Cuz there were there were no changes. Correct? That's correct. No changes. From the last meeting, you mean, right? Yes. Yes. Yeah, the changes The changes are highlighted from last month. Some of these ladies are back here Gateway because they participated in all the meetings recommending changes. So when they heard no changes Yes, they Yeah, yeah. No changes to the changes. Next we ask for your approval for the renovation of the second grade restroom project. We had a Shingle Construction submitted a bid for our bid process. The board requested that we go out to some other companies see if they were willing to bid. We did several others. Out of those we got one

021additional bid. And that was from Livingston Builders Incorporated at 293 293,400. Once again, we are recommending if the board wants to go with this project, we approve Shingle which came in at the lowest bid. What was the budget for that? Excuse me? 300,000. 300,000. I saw that too. It's all the price. We did our due diligence and checked multiple times trying to get it so I did ask Shingle if we were to postpone this a uh if there would would should we anticipate any price increase? And they said, "Oh, yeah. Anywhere from 8 to 15%." I'm listening to approve. Second motion to the second grade after. All those in favor. I do not. Thank you, Sophia. Next, we ask for approval for the uh elementary gym uh HVAC project uh through Ncore. This is a

022guaranteed cost savings project of 15 minute $898,825. It's a lot of money for something you don't see. But we'll feel it. We'll feel it. But that's a project that needs Yes. I like that. I like that discussion. And we budgeted for that as well. That was our plan initially. Right. Finally. That checks all the boxes. It wasn't something that we just like going to be running ripped everything up. And when will this get done this summer? This summer. Both projects will be done this summer. They'll be a completely completed before the Yes. Any motion? Questions on this? No questions. I'll motion to approve the approval of the CES gym HVAC project. I'll second. All those in favor. All right. Next, we ask approval for the Sherborn Public Library Board of Appointee, Brandon Hill, whose name

023was has submitted through the uh library trustees for the appointment. I'm going to make a motion to approve Yeah, second All in favor? Aye. Any voting against? Any abstentions? No. That is unanimous. Uh public comments? Persons wishing to address the board are uh Mr. Gunter. There is none. So, we're still good to continue. I'll pass on All right. Board members in this room have comments? Mr. Gunter, anything you want to share? Uh we want to welcome Tiffany. We're extremely excited to have her. There's a lot of buzz with our staff and excitement about what's to come. So, we're really excited to get her in and start working with her. So, um welcome. As you can tell, we're very excited to have you. Um I learn testing. Well, that's kind of a change of mood, but

024I learn testing will start in elementary tomorrow. So, please send all of your positive thoughts to our kids and our teachers as we navigate that. Our kids are prepared. I'm sure they will do terrifically, but there's a lot of anxiety that comes with that. Um our student council and our PBIS programs are working extremely hard at the end of the year here. Um you guys will hear some communication on Kate's card, the fundraiser student council's currently started, um and you're going to hear about our second edition of soaring eagles that we started last year, uh where our kids can learn what they have got to offer PBIS members if you have any questions on it. So, um soaring eagles is an opportunity to keep our kids motivated and engaged to end the school year here.

025They have an opportunity to earn paper airplanes that um for their grades grades attendance attendance growth growth math facts math facts So, they have an opportunity to win airplanes and they will all get to make their airplanes, take their airplanes into the gym um and throw them towards a circle to win prizes at the end of the year. So, a really cool project they have been working on to uh keep our kids engaged and motivated, so. I think that's it. I just to kind of piggyback off that a little bit, Ms. Rainey um has talked and has fearfully made herself available as much as she possibly can throughout the remainder of the year. We're planning on sending out some type of a meet and greet um you know, with the staff, the rest of the

026staff, but uh our students as well, and community members who would like to join, so. Um she's been very eager uh to get involved and uh get her get her feet wet, per se. Um and and she's been confirmed as a principal here at Smith Branch, so we're very excited about it. So. Ms. First Yes, yes, yes. Um I want to celebrate that it's not raining today. Uh spring sports is well, well, well underway um and we have about between six and eight events scheduled every day this week on top of trying to make up events. So, if you're bored, feel free to come over. There's going to be something going on every day. I want to give a shout out to our um our track team. I am not sure that people realize the

027work that goes into hosting a track meet and we host them twice for our conference and this is something that we have I've doing um and I paid attention this last Saturday and just got to observe because the weather was terrible, so I stood in my frozen little bubble. And, um, I got a lot of coaches' feedback about how they enjoyed coming to our school best. Um, we hosted 11 teams on Saturday and there will be another 23 teams here for the girls' invite this coming Saturday. That's a lot of people coming through our space. Um, and it is without a hiccup on time, even despite the rain. We had community members out here as early as 6:00, my husband included. They were out really pushing water. They had pumps all across, if you were

028there, you would have seen. It took a whole village and it still went on without any hiccups. So, I just want to celebrate everybody who stepped up, um, to to make those events happen. Um, also, Iron begins for us on Wednesday. We're starting with seniors this year. That was a lovely surprise for my senior class. Um, they're bringing it back one more time, and so we're going to get our senior class to do Iron for Government, and then we're going to kick off the junior high. Um, we have Macbeth here on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 in the auditorium. I've been hearing some snippets of their practices. It's going to be pretty awesome. It's the first time they've ever done Shakespeare, so they are pretty excited about that. Prom is coming up May 2nd. That's

029at Sturdy's. That Sunday following, we have two events. We have the Cheer Booster Eagle Fund hosting Purse Bingo, um, which is kind of a way to raise funds for us at our traditional high side. We don't have a PTO, as you know. So, that money goes in the teachers', um, wish list, if you will. Um, from basic supplies all the way up to they supplied lab materials, um, for my upper level science classes this year. So, pretty pretty great event. It's also our annual art show here, so that's where you'll see students' work like, um, Aspen and Jillian. And I can get those times to you, but, um, it's pretty incredible work. Um, we have our end of the year awards coming up. We have them We have four four days in a row. Um,

030so I'll share those as well. And if you're out and about, please feel free to stop by. I'll I'll free to see what we're doing. We have revamped our awards um, from 6-12 and realigned them. So, all junior high will start to get awards that match what they would be earning and working for at the high school level. So, we have some cool new levels. Um, and we started a principal's award for those students that really excel. So, we're going to be doing some cool celebrations there. Um, and uh, just want to give you a quick heads-up. Already, we're getting enrollments uh, for next school year. We have five families coming, three of which are coming from Northwest Allen, already enrolled and ready to go as of the end of the school year. So, that's

031pretty great. So, we're trying to include them in our year-end activities just so they can start to get excited about what's going on. And last, uh, certainly definitely not least, I have been amped up. I don't even know how else to explain it. Super busy, but uh, definitely definitely uh, grateful for the applicants that I have had this year. Last year, I felt like I was scrambling. This year, I am overflowing with strong candidates, and it's been really exciting to bring people on that are excited to be here and uh, be a part of what we're doing and it's it's great. Come down by one position for now. Um, and so, it's a it's a really great feeling knowing that, you know, um, that people want to be here and do all the things and

032here are all the celebrations. So, thank you. Nice work. Thank you, Mr. Richardson. Uh, just to let you know, too, that currently has Coach Hackett currently has the boys track team undefeated, and I believe the girls have only lost one. So, another outstanding year shaping up for the men's and women's track team at Allen High School. So, Curriculum report. >> And just real quickly, I've been we've been really busy working on that third strategic plan goal of our MTSS support. So, I met last week with all but one of our CBS grade level teams to talk about our daily schedule and how to make sure that those supports are in place. So, we're making just some small tweaks and trying to be a little more intentional in some areas just to make sure that we

033have those interventions in place for next year. We are working through some of PD and what that's going to look like. Um, I met with Susan last week on grants, so trying to wrap up some grant cycles. Today, our elementary teachers heard from a couple of assessment vendors because of new state guidelines we have to change what we're doing with our benchmarks and screeners. So, we'll have new assessments next year, but I feel confidently that we're we're headed in the right direction. Um, and then this is something and I know Melissa I hope it's okay to share, but we are bringing our Ed Professions program back here next year and I know Melissa's been talking more about the CTE offerings, but um, we're actually going to start the hope is to begin a grow your

034own program. So, um, instead of going to Columbia City, our kids who want to be teachers will be with us. We can offer dual credit. Um, they'll take their three courses and then we're hoping if they go to school locally we can somehow bring them back, have them as an IA, keep them around and then hopefully professionally when it's time to get into the career world they'll come back here. So, um, we're just in the baby steps of that, but but that's the goal. So, been working through that a little bit. Do you want to say anything else about Yeah, I I think I shared it's okay guys, it's okay. We're excited about it. Um, we I think I shared when I shared our course description guide with you guys a few months ago that

035we now have seven pathways. Um, we brought in a natural resources with Dr. Martin and it'll be a dual credit option and now this education pathways um, with um and Chris Briscoe will be also a dual credit option. It already has about 12 students in it. Um some of them will be able to even finish with us. So, no students will be leaving us for that program. And I mean, what a perfect opportunity. We have K-12. So, anybody that's going into education in that field will have a good experience. So, um they're all excited and ready to get started. And they're already starting to kind of recruit incoming freshmen. So, it's a great way to get students into classes and get the experience on their resume. So, we're pretty close. Yeah. What are the 40

03610 China? Uh a couple of things. Uh we do have a once a semester we have a bus evacuation. Just make sure our kids are safe and our bus drivers know what to do and all of those good things. Uh so, this uh Thursday, I believe, is our bus evacuation day in the morning. So, kids might be a little late coming into the building. Uh but, that is the reason why. Also, um we had our kindergarten roundup on April 9th and 14th. It was always an exciting time when we get to see new faces in the building. Um so, we're excited about that. And that should look nice, too. And uh I think Mr. Shorter talked about this, but our prom prom is is pretty well the show this weekend uh Friday and Saturday nights.

037The show starts at 7:00. So, as they say, "The show goes on." Hopefully we make money. But, that is all I have. Did that kindergarten numbers look better than last year? Yeah, they're still not where we'd like to be. I think in the pre-kindergarten program, we had 60. 60. Um and we show up in those two days. So, as of right now, we still anticipate we'll get another at least another 10 to 15. Traditionally, we add another 10 to 15 in the next That's about It's uh it's definitely not from lack of effort. It was very very nice to hear the parents come in and talk so highly of our team that was running kindergarten round up. I mean, we had families from Northwest Allen, we had families from neighboring districts that all just praised

038what these guys were doing during that time. So, we're very very thankful for their hard work. Yes, I really appreciate that. They had a brand new two-year family. Actually, brings father and his daughter who's been in the community for 27 years. His daughter has children, so his grandchildren are currently going to another district, a neighboring district. And they decided they're going to give us a try. So, they brought in their kindergarten over here to register and mom couldn't stop saying her praises enough. So, because of that, now she's like, I think we're going to transfer the rest of our kids here. So, again, I just think that the personal touch that our staff went out and connected with these kids. I mean, I think it was just pretty cool to hear them say that she

039feels like, I feel so much better already. The kids are excited to get started next year. So, it is just really great here. We're very blessed with a wonderful staff. They make those connections quickly. I want to say congrats to Taylor Winn and Sophie. That was pretty awesome. And Mr. Cryer, the glue that holds the building together, right? Watching the archery team do what they do has been pretty great. I get to go down to Louisville on the 8th to watch my middle school archery. So, that's exciting. I want to say congratulations to Jillian and Cam. Those are pretty big recognitions coming back to Louisville Busco, which is wonderful. Congrats to Leanne. retirement. She treats her well. Uh, welcome um, I mean Mitchell, Kenzie, Perlick. We're so excited to have all of you. Um, and

040I've It's how wonderful, too, that we've got you. We're We're putting them in May or in April, right? Yeah, now they're in May and so that's wonderful to be joining our team and getting you rolling. And then best luck to everybody in the Midwest. I just want to congratulate all of the students who put in the time and energy for the archery, the art, um, come to the play this weekend. Uh, Shakespeare is always challenging, so that'll be a good challenge for them, as well. And congratulations to all of these staff. Welcome to Gerald Killer. Welcome to the team. Yes. Uh, congrats to the staff, of course. And Wayne, though he's a pain in my butt once in a while. He's a good guy. He's always there. Um, pretty happy about that. And then of

041course, donations Yes. That's some huge numbers that once again this month that has been going on here for the last couple of years. It's just outstanding. And welcome everybody. Congratulations on everything. Hunter, you, too. All right. Um, I mean, reiterating a lot of what they've said. I I I think we we keep talking about the hashtag great things happen here.
