foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign good evening I'd like to call the Warwick County School Corporation Board of school trustees March 13th a meeting to order please rise and join us in a moment of silence followed by the pledge I pledge allegiance to your flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all oh thank you we'll now move on to Pete's earns and Melanie King first day [Applause] so I've got a topic I want to talk about tonight and I first want to say we have a great school system we have great teachers we have great School administration who I know want best for the kids just
like the parents do um I think sometimes we don't know that something's broke until we find that it's broke and and from what I've found it is a little broken and I'll ask you some questions about how we can fix it the end um first of all I'm going to talk about the library books I wanted to be very clear I am not a book banner I am not for Banning books at all I only want appropriate books on our libraries and I've talked to some parents about this and what they say is yeah but kids can get it on YouTube and kids can get it off here and there and and I agree with that but when we come to school parents should feel very safe about what's in the library and it's not
a religious issue this is not coming from a religious background this is not coming from a political background this is coming from I care about my kids I care about kids and I want the best for all of our kids so with that I've reviewed 142 books in our libraries um specifically high school and middle school um some of the books I found have issues some of those books are in here not every book that I've reviewed that could be on a bad list is really a bad book I'm not certain about all the books but um you know sometimes when we read books that are historical the language and the subject matter does make sense um and should be there but I want to read a book that was in Booneville high school last
week I do not see it there this week and what I want to read is very explicit so if you have children that you don't want to hear this she'll be a good time to leave this book is called Verity and this book has excuse me Melanie what's the title look this book is called Verity by Colleen humor I don't want to tell you um this book is an issue in the Middle School it's not because the library has the book because the kids are sneaking these books in they're very sexually explicit and the kids are getting hold of them I think they're putting different covers on the books and reading them at school so this is not a middle school issue this is more of a high school issue page 21 by Saturday night
we have [ __ ] three times if I had a boyfriend in my early 20s named Amos who liked to be who liked being choked it's why we broke up because I refused to choke him would he have moved on even for more dangerous sexual perversions in your early 20s vanilla sex should satisfy a person without the need to introduce fetishes that's one page page 38 he's an ex-boyfriend who thought he was going to get laid but instead was quietly rejected right before finding out I was staying in another man's home age 73. we ate Chinese takeout we [ __ ] we ordered pizza we [ __ ] we watched TV we [ __ ] I was obsessed with his laugh with his [ __ ] with his mouth this even isn't the worst part I mean we'll be glad to share it with you
but we don't need to have this before right there are people that I know you get the point he's a high school book correct this was in the Booneville High School library last week and I want you to know this is this is what our kids are reading so if it's offensive to you it should be offensive to the children we have in our school system that's why I'm reading it it's not what I want to talk about it's not how I want to speak either so my question is first of all how does Verity get into the Boombah High School library Who let that book in what is the process because something is broken this will I could read any book out of this this any any quote out of this book and you'd
be offended equally that's probably the worst one um so what is the review process for books getting into our library it's my understanding that the library takes whatever books are donated and I'm not sure if that's actually true but I have heard that um and and how do we get to a point where our books are appropriate where my 13 year old at the middle school I don't have to worry about oral sex being in the book she's she can check out um and then how do we keep this from happening again I'm glad this book is gone how do we keep that book out and how do you guys get ahead of what books are going in that Library I mean I'm ahead of it but how do you guys get ahead of it
so those are my my questions I'm leaving for you thank you thank you next we have Irene Fuller Eileen Fuller and my the same topic tricks I'm not gonna read because you've asked her to stop absolutely gross front and back these are Pages let me read the page numbers 33 53 55 59 63 80 82 84 89. let's skip a few pages and what is the name of that book the book is tricks which Library Castle High School and then I'm researching Elementary just got started my very first book absolutely gross ages 5 to 12. can you provide the title of that book I wish I would have printed off the article my body is growing the book when I checked on Friday was at log Linville had two additions Sharon had won Tennyson had
one thank you okay I am for consideration of routine business Dr Lambert yeah the routine items tonight are going to include approving the minutes of the February 27th board meeting signing the docket and approving the claims do we have a motion we have a motion by Mrs Glover second by Mrs Metzger discussion all those in favor signify by saying aye all right Jose motion carries consideration of items for board action Dr Lambert okay so I'll take handle an a I was able to submit or go through contract negotiations last week those were done successfully and I submitted my resignation to the HR department today and I wanted to make sure you knew that because I know you're getting ready to move to E and A has to take first you'll see that on the Personnel
reports and I think Dr Gresham got that in and so I just wanted to make sure you were aware of that as you began to go to B and I'll turn it over to Mrs Wallace for B okay Item B consider naming superintendent for what County School Corporation with Dr Lambert's resignation letter in our packets we are moving to look forward to what's next and one of the board's most important responsibilities is the hiring of the superintendent for the schools so the board met considered a multitude of factors and considerations and at this time I'd like to call for a motion to appoint the next superintendent of the Warwick County School Corporation pending contract negotiations we have a motion I make a motion we have a motion by Mr Baker and I'll double second that
and we have a double second I would like to make a motion that we hire Miss Abby Redmond Dr Abby Redmond to be the next superintendent of Oregon high school corporation pending contractor contract negotiations and Mrs Glover seconds that motion correct yes double seconds amen okay is there any discussion I'd like to say that you know a couple years ago we went through this process and I am confident that we could not provide someone more experience more qualified and better capable of continuing what I believe is a very positive progress in Maury County School Corporation and there's no use looking further where we have what I believe is the best candidate in our school corporation and I'm going to tell a little bit about her just real quickly she was a student in the Warwick
County School Corporation she became a teacher here in 1995 at Booneville high school was a counselor beginning at 2002 an assistant in 2010 at John H Castle in Chandler and then principal of Elberfeld Elementary in 2012. and in 2018 she became the director of learning for the Warwick County School Corporation so she's been all around the corporation she's been here for a number of years and she's a lifetime Warrick County resident so she also has her doctorate her superintendent's license principal's license and is highly qualified for this position is there anyone else who would like to speak on her behalf I think the she's also it's a special day for it's her birthday I found that out not many people get name superintendent on their birthday that's pretty awesome at this time we'll call for

determined that danco Construction Incorporated was the apparent low bidder for the project this recommendation excludes the alternate work to be done at Oakdale Elementary School as the bids did not reflect the work except in an acceptable way I recommend that the contract for related work be awarded to danco Construction Summit second second by Mr Eichner is there any discussion I was just going to say the in Mr Armstrong here he's not here okay you get someone else who correct me that if I'm wrong um I believe that that's funded through the cafeterias it doesn't come out of the budget of the school corporation so so that doesn't that is paid for they're self-funded in other words so right and Mr Robinson has been working this for like two years we've been buying equipment ahead to

wilhelmas the human resource office has the following business to bring before the board tonight on agenda items A and B it's important to note that these non-renewals have nothing to do with job performance these are temporary assignments and so we have to do this so that we can then build these positions with regular assignments so agent item a consider non-renewal of contracts for Teacher serving in temporary capacity for the 2022-2023 school year in your packet you will find there are 12 names on this list all those in favor signify by saying aye aye opposing a motion carries Dr Gresham in similar fashion consider non-renewal of temporary assignment for support staff serving in a temporary capacity for the 2022-2023 school year and in your package will find there are 57 names on that list motion to

uh Mr Whitehead do we need to vote on the recession of hire of that an employee no okay thank you thank you we have a report tonight Walter Lambert is ready to give a report on the policy committee it's a very coveted report is ready tonight it's got a lot of zip in his step he's ready to go Walter it's all yours all right I was told to come up here and say happy birthday but congratulations I we I know as a team member we're excited to have Abby in that position and I know which is going to be great to work with but she has been all the years she I've worked with her so thank you um all right so policy and curriculum meeting we had that tonight we do have three policies
that we will be forwarding to the board for a full vote for first reading of the second reading the first policy that we went through tonight was 4130 the remediation retention and promotion policy that was just more of a language cleanup some of those some of the language in the policy had things like I set which we haven't had isep testing in a long time had some other made mentions of other items as such so you'll see the cleaned up copy of that when we put it in for the April board meeting another policy the same thing was just something we needed to clean up some language it's 4210 it's the kindergarten and grade one uh insurance requirements the for the ages and again there's some things in there that just didn't you know really
equate to what we do today when it came to that policy so those are just more some language things that we cleaned up within the policy and then lastly we we did not have a policy we're going to I believe name this one in 6700 it's a federal funds policy it's something that the auditor had asked us to make certain we have in place that basically just says how we will spend the federal funds that we get from the from the U.S government and then that we you know follow all the rules attached with spending those funds so those three will be at the first reading in April and then we'll do the second reading at the end of April and we'll get those in any questions thank you we did have a report tonight
from Mrs Wagner but she is unavailable due to an illness and can't be here tonight so we'll save that one for the next meal uh other board business other board business tomorrow morning at 7 30 a.m in the admin building we have a construction and wpcc committee meeting also I sent something to you and I believe or I believe Laura did about the nsba spring regional meeting May 16th in Jasper if you are wanting to attend that please let Laura know just send her an email or a text and then our next Personnel meeting will be April 10th at 6 30 here in this building and then the following day April 11th at 7 30 at the admin building we'll have another construction nwpcc meeting this is the only meeting we're having in March that's
why I went ahead and announced the April meetings so March 21st at 8 30 a.m is transportation specialist policy and curriculum will next meet April 10th 5 30 here at Central Services foreign Dr Lambert we talked a couple meetings ago about the issues that our corporations facing with vaping and you guys are working on some things right yeah so that's to be coming in a work session maybe I think so uh just to rehash what I shared with you during the week we had a really productive meeting on Wednesday brought all 18 principles as well as the six-pack together with the singular Focus we started having some conversations about the alignment opportunities for improvement we have some soft spots along the way we have some good things going on but we're not aligned like we
should be and we think some of those gaps um are leaving US Open you know we just have certain situations where some kids are exposed to instruction a couple of three times in another place where they may not be so again not so much on the quality of the work maybe just where we are so Walter and I sat down after that processed all that info we're going to be moving forward on that and hope to be able to discuss that maybe the second half of the April work session and for sure in May okay yeah it was nice to see every educator in the room zeroing in on that and we learned a lot about where we have uh good things going on and where we need to shore up okay yeah right yeah
thanks for asking and then um so not that you have I just want to get a thought out yeah um so obviously early on we had some folks that were concerned about you know the the books right right obviously it's a very strong language and some of those things and so as a board member I'd like to be educated because I what I'm trying to understand and this is going from a couple years back of what is you know freedom of speech right it cannot be infringed upon versus other right sure so I would like to know where where are we with that don't tell me now because we gotta look at it but maybe get with Cliff so we can understand what that is and maybe a reminder for us on what our processes
are that was a question that was asked and I think we need some kind of follow-up right um and I'd leave it to you on how you want to follow that up with you know how it's pres a presentation or whatever that sounds great and we certainly do have processes for things like appeals and I know we do like this would be great to share those yeah so maybe board member education as well as something for public yeah okay very much and I would hope that you will share that information the superintendent and I said at that time and I still believe it today we need to work at teaching kids better I believe I did will defend to the death freedom of speech but I think we need to be conscious and work and
try and figure out how to do this the right way but I appreciate your efforts and it is not being ignored anyone else I just have one with the group tonight making the decision to hire Dr Raymond I just want to applaud that and I want to give you three reasons why she's the right choice to be the superintendent speak on behalf of the team I was so glad Walter said something because he's right that's what the team wanted but I was thinking on my way in here I always knew that Abby was such an appropriate choice for this because of the work she's done or Mrs Wilhelm has shared but three reasons really came to mind for me and I won't take a bunch of time but they stand out one of them is
she is Mission focused she understands that kids are at the center of our work and while she cares about everything else around it and takes great care of people she puts kids at right there in that spot and makes her decisions that way that is incredibly important as we move forward and try to bring kids forward from some of the issues we've had with gaps in learning with some of the social and emotional issues we've had post pandemic she's the right person to put kids in that spot she is intelligent she has a large Brain and is a big thinker and don't underestimate that intelligence as a problem solver she excellent at that anytime she comes to the table with our team she inevitably has the best idea and that's just you know just the
raw intelligence of that person sitting in that chair she can handle that and finally at the end I would just say she has tremendous drive for this District not for her personal gain for the kids and staff here in the district she puts that first and I just think you made an awesome choice and I'm glad you did it any other discussion okay congratulations Dr Redmond and I hate to approve your resignation it's been a great 18 or 19 months whatever it's been and we certainly appreciate the direction you've led us there'll be another time for this but I just like you say that in 18 months I do believe you're directed our school corporation and said mission in a direction that I'm sure that Ms Dr Redmond will have ways to improve it but
I I'm proud of that and I think it was very important for this board to support the direction we're in to make sure we do not lose the focus on what we're doing and this is just the naming the appointing tonight and we will be having further reception and that type of thing later on but uh we feel like it's really important to keep the transition going and have time for Dr Redmond to work specifically with Dr Lambert because we are going in a great Direction and we hope I can speak to the board collectively we feel like this was a strong strong transition opportunity and we're happy to have Dr Redmond in that position okay thank you very much have a good night meeting adjourned [Music] thank you [Music]
