all set on attendance okay entertain a motion to enter into executive session to discuss a Personnel matter pursuant to one mrss 456a Robin and Phoebe roll call please yes yes yes yes yes yes yes so moved we're going to go to and we do have an adjust another adjustment uh 6162 blue crew robotics team will be doing a presentation what we oh 7172 oh says 6162 7172 okay any who moving on I entertain a motion to accept the December 14th 2023 school board meeting minutes move by Phoebe second by Chantel any errors omissions and just a reminder uh if you weren't there U you abstain roll call yes abstain yes abstain yes yes so moved and L robotics team so we just started our robotic season robot and it's kind of themed around music and
there are speakers and amplifiers on the field and these 11 anyway it's it looks like it's going to be a really fun game for the kids and I'm um we're asking for permission to go to the out of state events she's gonna say where they are yeah so permission to go to the granite state competition in Salem New Hampshire which is on February 29th to March 2nd and then also at the pine tree at the kissi in louon on March 15 17th and then new englands which are at the Big E Exposition Center in Springfield Massachusetts from April 3rd to the 6 and your fellow Schoolboard members here are also both in leadership positions on our robotics team so it's been nice working with them and the Lewiston one is just informational um because that's
in state but we really need permission for the New Hampshire one and we will have to qualify for the new englands we have qualified the last two years but we'd like permission in case we qualif ify so we don't have to come back to you question should you do well at new englands is there possibly a national um yes that's during April vacation and uh we'll cross that bridge when we come to it but the possibility always exists it's in Houston again this year I'm going to frame the question to allow you to go to any and all competitions if that's that would be wonderful that way we can yep that sounds great any other questions comments thank you so I main a motion to allow the blue crew robotics team to request to attend
any of no do I missed that hand sorry no oh you're trying to make the motion let me fin let me finish motion then uh where was I to attend any and all competitions out of state that they qualify for how's that he second Tina one Joel two any other comments questions T you so robotics is an absolutely wonderful program I'm very excited about it I love seeing our kids get involved in building and making these things and working together as a team is so important um and I'm I'm just all for this I think this is absolutely wonderful anyone else roll call please yes yes yes so moved okay public comment uh Roger sure yeah go ahe P I don't think I'll go over minutes I were Roger you're the only one here tonight
if you okay don't push it I'll let you go thank you thank you for your time tonight I came here for several reasons one is once again due to I don't think it's on turn the mic on just my apologies problem all right thank you for your time tonight I came here for several reasons one is once again due to age inappropriate reading material or plain inappropriate reading material um speaking of plain inappropriate material I haven't been back here since the gender queer debate and vote um after leaving that I discovered the most shocking image yet I didn't really pay much attention to that image the first go round so that's why I'm passing it around now um the scene that references Plato Symposium shows in the legal pedophile act that if it were a
photograph would cause the photographer and the adult in the image to go to prison that's a fact nobody can can deny that that is a fact if that were a photograph as opposed to an illustr ation two people would be going to prison why is this acceptable as a drawing in an academic institution I brought this to the attention of a board member who told me they knew in Plato's Symposium it is a male and a young boy uh if you look at the image height differences pubic hair differences will tell you that is a grown man holding the genitalia of a prepubescent boy so we have board members that know this is a pedophile act portrayed positively the fantasy of the author this is mind-boggling and I can't believe changes haven't been made since
then to prevent such things going forward now we find out there's a book probably several with inappropriate wording in situations available at the elementary school for eight-year-olds we are well aware of the response we will get from some board members staff and community that will call this an attack on the LGBT community that is truly a narcissistic response to concerns about age appropriate materials if there are cysts or straight books or however you want to word it that have similar material material for 8-year-olds we beg and plead you to remove those from the library as well this isn't due to that although I don't know of those books existing I would love for them to be brought to my attention if so so that we can fight those um which brings me to my next
Point since it's obvious to some of us parents that we can no longer trust the library Department to properly screen reading materials we are asking for them to be screened by the board and a parent group uh I don't think that's an unreasonable Quest as ultimately parents should decide what their children are viewing in their Library anyway there are books that are lgbtq related and have lgbtq characters that don't show pedophilia in a positive light uh or age inappropriate words actions and situations uh I don't know why we can't commit to searching those books out and bringing those in to support those students our district has the GSA which we were told at a meeting is our largest extracurricular group we have more rainbows than any other symbol on the ground with the exception of
of Phoenix and I'm honestly not even sure that we have more Phoenix symbols in this building than we do rainbows I would love for the opportunity to count that uh our lgbtq students are represented well in this district and nobody is asking us to change that uh we appreciate all students having a voice and having resources available to them we do appreciate the efforts you have made to make those students comfortable in this District they absolutely should not feel any different than a heterosexual student and vice versa it's an equal playing field they're here for academics to get an education speaking back to the GSA It's a Wonderful group and I'm glad that they have this resource but as a parent I I got to think that chess club math club and basketball look better
on an academic application to a college than four years of the GSA so I I so again we're glad that they have these resources but we are coming after the inappropriate material and we hope that we can sway the focus back to academics another reason I came is because for the last 3 or four years I heard many stories of bullying at the middle school with no results or punishment to students that seems to be the frequent ending that I'm hearing uh I don't have a student that had these problems but I have heard it multiple times and again the vast majority of these parents are saying it's not being handled or changed a lot of them have pulled their kids or gone to different classes and things like that um with the amount of
energy spent on welcoming all people why are we still having these bullying is issues and how do we stop it um Michael Moren is running for the next JC and I'm going to be running for the next one from livmore Falls we will be using these images um words in situations while we go door to door and knock to earn our seats that as well as the fact that the parent survey on mask was ignored we are going to have those comments with constituents so this is your notice to shape up and start respecting parents wishes have some actual adult discernment for what is appropriate and what is not appropriate or we'll have you all unseated one by one until there is at least a majority of board members with common decency and sense have
a great night thank you for letting me speak thank you for your comments okay board members we'll start with our student Representatives you have anything tonight or no if you don't that's okay we do you do nice um good evening the robotic season has started oh what did they hear you okay the robotic season has started they had their big kickoff event last weekend if if you would like to follow along with their competition season then you can follow them on Facebook and Instagram at Blue crew Robotics and the last thing is midterms are almost here so good luck to all the students thank you ladies any other board comments maybe all right it's that time of year again where weather is very unpredictable as we saw for the last few days um my request
for the community as well as as anyone who is operating a vehicle or using the roads to keep a close eye out for students and remember the flashing lights of a bus means you stop for them it doesn't mean speed past them or anything like that um we've been fortunate this year so far but just as a reminder I know it's getting towards that time where um additional holidays and things like that are coming up people are rushing to get things done please do not rush around a school bus I am begging you for the safety of our students for the safety of of our teachers and everyone else when you're in a school district area um please please think of the safety of others and I also would like to commend our bus drivers
for doing a fantastic job so far this year they don't honestly don't get enough thanks um I think a lot of parents and Guardians understand that car trips can be difficult when you have one or two kids in the back seat now imagine if you have 40 of them um so what I ask is that we as a team say thank you to our drivers as well as all of our transportation staff because what they do is so important and they deserve to be commended for it thank you thank you Phoebe well said anyone else um so I I know that the big theme this year has been bullying we've seen it in our elementary schools we've seen it in our primary schools we're seeing in our middle schools we're seeing in our high schools
the thing we don't talk about is we're seeing it with adults on social media we're seeing it towards our teachers we're seeing it towards our administrators so you know as we hopefully will get a bully standup because I'm still on that train a parent presented it back in the fall and I'm still all about it having that open Forum um when we try to think of where are are where are the kids getting the audacity to be bullies we need to remember they learn from the adults around them so that's that's kind of what I wanted to say thank you thank you anyone else superintendent report okay good evening first I wanted to recognize and thank Norman Jackman Ken Vining Laura Merill and the dedicated employees for for going above and beyond and helping our
friends at Pinnacle Health and Rehab during the flooding right before Christmas we received a message stating they desperately needed a help I reached out to Norma Ken and Laura and with no hesitation whatsoever they and their staffs were on it making sure we were able to get those patients here and taken well care of during these last couple weeks attended a policy meeting uh we'll be bringing some policies for the first readings to you at the next board meeting also attended the Franklin County Safety project advisory meeting to discuss our commitment and work for our monetary share of the grant for safety in our district we had a surprise safety audit from the Department of Labor workplace safety and health division on Monday and Tuesday right after vacation they do these surprise audits every 5
to 10 years we should receive an official report from them in about a month unofficially we were made aware of a few issues that we have already begun working on Crystal and I have met with all administrators and directors this past week to get our initial budget numbers together also at the elementary school the book Rick has been challenged and we are in the early stages of that challenge We are following District policy JJ for challenges to remove library books thank you questions or comments for Scott thank you administrative reports Ken good evening and happy 2024 um I'm kind of surprised I was the first on the list last year was the last every time so I had to go to to Lara and ask her if there's any reason for this and she said
well yeah she she thought that maybe I was deserved at least one time this year to go in front of chrest because she noticed that all the the board members usually were sound asleep after his message so you didn't get to hear the the full extent of mine um but moving on uh this year we've uh it's been it's it's started off almost like last year ended up uh with the weather which has to in my opinion been very horrible as it was all of 2023 um also you know we started right off with I thought things were up to full full capacity with employees but we actually had two go out on a medical leave and so we you know as we start again in 2024 I I know it's going to be better
I I believe that I I I pray about it all the time um but with the facilities and things things are going well we have some people that step up Step Up When need to be work many hours and and I can't thank them enough I hope one day I'll hit the Power Ball and then they they'll truly know how much I do appreciate it uh two unexpected facility issues come about this last year uh during 2023 and just to make people understand that that when we do budgets and things sometimes we have very unexpected things one was a one was gym lights in this gym here uh we actually had uh 42 of them go out um and had to have them replaced uh that was kind of an unexpected thing uh the total
cost of that was around $32,000 um another thing was uh the unexpected uh main boiler at the primary school uh we lost two sections of that in November of of 2023 uh Scott myself seamons um sat down and discussed what was the options of that um to get it fixed at first we thought it was going to be at least five to six months um and just to get it fixed and to have a bay a boiler put up for the outside was going to be $160,000 uh to have a new boiler put in was going to be $290,000 uh we wrestled with that we knew we had to do something um we decided to check on some other vendors we which we did and uh and lo and behold something came through another vendor
was able to get us two sections from New Jersey and in approximately four weeks they have installed them now uh and things are running fine uh that is going to be approximately $50,000 expense but it's a lot better than 160 and plus it's fixed already um on December 8th and 9th we had a that that rainstorm that that devastated a lot of the state actually we came out of it quite well we did the only really repercussions and expense were going to have is at the maintenance garage down on Ceda Street um the power got knocked out there from a tree falling the lines and we lost a motor in a furnace and we lost a door opener total cost of both of them to have them repaired is going to be around $4,000 the
only bad part like it seems to be everything we seem to want to get repaired is the furnace was going to be four to 6 weeks and and the door opener is going to be there again five to six weeks um hopefully this back during that storm so hopefully this Tuesday coming up we'll get the furnace back to running uh that's one thing when you look at the weather we've been very fortunate there so we would have no freeze ups um and the door opener will probably probably be about four more weeks um Scott already mentioned about on January 2 3rd uh time of Labor Peter Crockett went around the buildings check things out um I was very pleased in what we came up with really that it seems to be very minor repairs But
there again I've I've gone through some of these and I then I'm shocked when I get the results from the the four-person panel so it could change I hope not I don't think it will but I'm just saying that I have seen it Go drastically Chang and I've seen fines come from some of the incidents um again this last Monday Scott Crystal and I sat down and went over the budget um we decided that with the facilities where we've gone through for the over the last six years we've gone through many many um projects uh from the phase one phase two which was funded through the P public and we we accomplished so much through those and then we had the the um S1 2 and three you know which which I I just can't
say enough and I mean I know it's because of disasters and things but this district has really been blessed by all the things that we've obtained through these uh you know I I could go on and on and on I could read you a whole list of new boilers roofs Windows carpets floors you know um so much working uh custodial equipment that we've gotten that and I look at all these things and even even as far as a tractor or a MOA you know things that we probably would never would had an opportunity to get or it would have been spaced out over many years so sometimes I guess things come in in good things come in bad packages uh an ending you know I'd like to just say that you know I I looked
at 2023 and what uped until December I I thought oh this has been the most horrible year of my life you know I I lost a family member I had things going on you know i' planned on going hunting with my son that was in the military he was coming he had gone he'd been overseas all summer come home was going to come up and lo and behold they had to start a war over in Israel so he get shipped back over there and you know just everything looked like it was going downhill um I did get a quote from Karen samon Samson uh and it and it said you know you got to look for the good and the bad the happy and the sad the gain in your pain what makes you grateful
not hateful uh I I see a lot of things in this but at the end of that time uh there again I say sometimes things come out of bad things uh things worked out very well some of the best things happened to me in in late November and early December uh you know I almost hate to say this one here but November when my son was supposed to come up and go hunting I'd been planning all summer along to scouting out my my property that I have and putting up seats and had cameras and knew where everything was going to be and he was going to get this monstrous back and but he got shipped off well I I mentioned it to him he said Dad if you don't shoot that buck I'm going to
have to be very very upset with you so I did November 14th he foolishly came out to where I thought he was going to be and and we got the biggest buck I've ever got in my life a 10 point 20 216 PB buck so things do work out sometimes uh December 7th um my other son that lives in North Carolina had a little 4 pound 6 oun Michael Kenneth boy uh December 17th my son came back from Israel in time to have Christmas here December 19th the elderly came from Pinnacle it was a blessing to to help them and uh so once again I can only say that sometimes good things work out questions or comments thank you Chris is supposed to be next but I'm going to save him because uh I don't
want everybody falling asleep we'll go to Norma I don't know about not falling asleep hello um you pull the microphone down to thank you calling me short didn't say that so I don't have a lot I just SC already um um thank my custodians bus drivers and cafeteria um I was very proud of I only had to make two or three phone calls and they all showed up and it was just it was something to see so it just shows what kind of people that I continue to work with every day that I'm proud of and we did school bus safety um we usually do it at the beginning of the year but just because of Staffing and other issues we were delayed with that and we did this after school vacation with the elementary
school on Friday we covered the whole school me and two other bus drivers we are doing the primary school on the 18th and 19th so we'll be able to get both prek classes we have a um seat on wheels that we take over and show them how to sit in the seat properly and all that good stuff so we are need we are still in need of a van driver we have a van driver out on medical leave a bus driver out on medical leave and had a van driver resigned to do doe to health reasons we have hired um we now officially have two bus monitors and we recently hired a uh van driver and that's that's about it me and my secretary if you call a transportation department you might not get anybody
because we've both been driving depending on call outs and stuff like that so that's about it that's all I have right now questions or comments thank you thank you Laura so good evening um food service department has been pretty busy the last few months since I came for you back in November um the breakfast and the lunch numbers both remain very high and participation is really strong throughout all four of the buildings which is really good staff's working really hard and I'd like to thank all of the staff as well as thank those staff members who did go way above and beyond um when we did have our senior citizens that were brought here to be housed during the weather and the storm it was truly uh remarkable experience for them um and they really
tried to make the best of a a difficult situation um we did receive our supply chain assistance fund round number four this past week in the amount of $ 35,6 6723 which was was nice and welcomed I was glad to have received that um tomorrow I will be attending the Capital Area um Educational Alliance purchasing group our Co-op um and we'll be discussing uh bids and processes moving forward for the next year um and I'm also pleased to stand here and to tell you that um back in November I was notified by um um Doe's department head um Jane that um I had been one selected as one of three candidates to be submitted into a um one week worth of training at Kansas State University um which is uh serving up science a path
to save food in schools and I'm happy to stand here and tell you that I have been selected to attend that in April so I'm looking forward to that so that's all I have for you questions or comments I think we all say congratulations thank you Robin good evening uh We've hired two new friendly faces or actually three uh friendly faces in our office since the last school board meeting uh Jolene loose is now our nighttime Administrative Assistant Jolene also works at Franklin Memorial Hospital and she'll be a tremendous asset and helping out with our medical Workforce classes we've hired Trisha moer to be our digital Equity project manager through our countywide grant Trisha was previously the executive director of the fr Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and most recently she worked in senior leadership
at the senior Planning Center Trisha is tasked with building Partnerships with local agencies and nonprofits to promote the federal affordable connectivity program so this program offers eligible community members a discount on their monthly internet bill also under this grant we're working with Ernie Stewart who will be teaching basic computer classes for us he'll be instructing twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays out of our office mon uh excuse me Mondays at the J Niles library and Friday at treat Memorial in our December newsletter we posted student enrollment numbers and I just wanted to provide a little context around our enrollment so as of December 1st we had 226 actively enrolled students we have 127 students pursuing their High School credential or their highet 67 students are working on basic adult education which could be financial
literacy or digital literacy 13 students are enrolled in Workforce training classes at the moment eight Learners have graduated in the last 90 days um but they're still working with us on resumés job applications mock interviews and we have 11 students in our College transitions program um this does not include enrichment classes but we generally serve between 200 and 300 community members per year in enrichment courses speaking of enrichment courses uh before I left the office I got to greet 10 teenagers who are there for our babysitting class so tonight they're going to be earning their CPR first aid certification and then they're taking a three and a half hour child safety course that's led by main Health um in partnering with them we're able to offer this to the community for $10 a person so
normally if you were to go out and get a CPR certification it's over $100 all those kiddos tonight will leave with that certification which is pretty great and lastly I just wanted to share some good news we've been working with an English language learner off and on for a few years this student has been working on earning their High School credential uh yesterday during the snowstorm we got the notification that the student passed their highet exam so we're really proud of them that's it questions or comments thank you thank you now our newest director Jenna hi everyone so today is my Eighth Day in my new position um I've actually been with the district for 14 years as a special educator so and I was also born and raised here so yeah this is obviously
where I want to be um so unfortunately they have not been able to find someone to take my old position as a resource room teacher at the high school but that's okay because we have an excellent sub in my place who used to teach here um in the meantime I will continue to manage my case load and do meetings and the paperwork and uh all those sorts of things but I was just so grateful you guys gave me the opportunity to be here um so over the past eight work days I've been able to meet with the principles at the primary elementary and middle schools to talk about um their building and how things work and 504 expectations and all that good stuff I did not need to do that at the high school because
I've been there for 14 years and I know how it works and TJ and I have had many discussions um so at the end of my first two weeks of work I will have attended four 504 referral meetings four IEP meetings three principal meetings one state meeting one admin meeting two trainings I've been able to fill in for a half a day as a sub at the high school because someone was out and completed copious amounts of paperwork at the end of the month I will also participate in a Tri-State virtual conf conference on the importance of special education administrators providing supports and guidance and programming for disregulated students this is a huge issue that's only getting bigger and bigger so we want to be able to support our staff so for the 504 update
we have 69 total students that have 504s um only 63 of them are active right now the high school has 29 Active cases the middle school has 18 the elementary school has 11 and the primary school has five um the referral activity from the beginning of the year until now we've had 19 kids referred um so right now we have two referrals at the high school we have one more that's anticipated at the middle school we are currently doing one referral and we have another one that's anticipated the elementary we currently have two referrals and at the primary school we have one more anticipated referral coming our way I expect that this will only increase I I think a lot of people knew that um Tina would be transitioning out and someone knew would be
coming in so I suspect they might have held off a little bit so I think that'll increase the last thing I'm going to report on is tutoring so we currently have 10 students enrolled in tutoring at the central office um seven of them are participating in their tutoring services and I've had the pleasure of meeting all of them um I've also been able to spend some time with our tutor Mr Allen and watch him engage with students and we're so lucky to have him and we're so lucky to offer tutoring during this school day because when we had tutoring after school it was very very hard to get kids to come right because their friends are all out of school so giving them the opportunity to do it during school is fantastic um the last
thing is that we have officially transition from a pro program called Odyssey wear to cours wear at the end of December courseware is an online program that allows students to work at their own pace while having access to a wide variety of engaging curriculum a special thank you goes out to Chris Hollingsworth and Mark bonavie for getting courseware up and running and ensuring our students were able to immediately access the new curriculum I think we all know that you know when you're dealing with the internet and new programs things can go haywire and they were right there to make sure the first day kids were able to do what they needed to do so so thank you everyone does anyone have a question or anything they'd like me to report on in the future anyone
thank you I'm excited this is such an important it is so many kid that don't fall asally I will say I will say that I never had it in my mind to be an administrator but I will tell you something um I am forever an Andy my husband's a tiger and my children are the Phoenix okay uh so are my parents you know I love this community I love the students I love my colleagues I love the district I love it all and uh most importantly uh Sher Parker is a special ed director and she is my girl and we work so well together and we have Big Dreams that we want to make happen and uh I think we're going to eventually I have a lot to learn uh but at least we have
a good team and we have a go good school board and I I can see that sometimes people are not so kind to you guys but I I hope you keep doing what you're doing um we know the majority of us know your hearts are in the right place anyone else thank you Chris you mean to J I'll try to be quick so I don't put you all to sleep I mean who who would ever think that they should get up and say something about me before I'm coming up but anyways on a personal note I was on a vacation day today today um my wife and I were lucky enough to go to um the main agricultural show at the Civic Center um so if you want to know anything about Agri tourism I
know it all now uh so not quite sure why I decided to come back from that vacation day to get that kind of abuse from Ken but as Ken said it is a new year it's a new year so I'm going to be actually my New Year's resolution didn't know this but my New Year resolution this year was to be nicer to Ken because I know how sensitive he is so that's what I'm going to do I'm going to be nice I'm not going to say anything negative about him of course he should know that my New Year's resolutions only last about a month so that's a that's a warning um but actually the the agricultural show that I went to today kind of ties into what I was sharing with with you tonight um
and that is um it's actually a curriculum growing gardens um I'm uh I'm part of the the gffc which is the greater Franklin food Council um and there that's the group that um they actually have a a staff person that they hire that works with schools um on school Gardens um and all of the all the schools all the way up to Middle School in RSU 9 U she works with them on their school guard Gardens uh has been for for several years um as well as Kingfield Stratton Eustace I believe and and probably some other schools as well um unfortunately we've never had that them her the person that does that work with J schools or or livmore schools or RSU 73 um so um but I am glad to announce that we think
that's going to change um one of the things that that group has done is they've created um using their knowledge and and working with umf um they've created the growing gardens curriculum um and it's tied to to science standards um as well as some other standards that fall in line um and and this is kind of just the um table of contents but in that table of contents every single one of those um items there clicks when you click on it it actually goes to the lesson plan so it includes all the lessons um and this is going to be something that that they're actually going to monetize to to bring funds into the greater Franklin food Council um but because we're part of that group now and we're in we're in Franklin County we
can actually get this curriculum for free um and as well as probably get the the lady that runs the program to come here and work with our staff on some inservice and things like that for free as well um so the hope is that you know with with some of that Co money we built green houses and you know we're trying to do more Hands-On outside learning um so we're hoping that this will be a big part of science down at the elementary and even the primary school um and the hope is even you know we have several new science teachers at the middle school so the hope is that even they can use some of this you know there's built lessons already for them there that that'll tie into the standards so um so
we're hoping that will help them as well so that's that's our hope for the future they haven't technically released it yet so you're kind of getting a uh uh look at it before it's even out but it'll be coming soon questions or comments Andrew thank you Andrew um I'm really impressed looking at the topics of how much this crosses curriculum yeah um obviously it's all going to be in reading but there's also huge sign science but math and and this is just going to build into so many of the goals that we've had especially bringing in more outside learning I'm really impressed with the curriculum looks good yeah and it's and it's going in the direction that we want with more hands on and so it's going to be uh my question is I will
this tie in like with the gardens that we have already at the schools the kids will be working on those and like the greenhouse program we have now is this in addition to or to replace that or not necessarily replace it it'll definitely work hand inand a lot of times when um when they actually start with schools they don't even have Gardens yet um you know they start that process do the gardens with them do the lessons with them um but so this will just be a way for us to actually um grow those programs and and be able to utilize it even more as well as have you know already built lessons for for staff to be able to use to be able to to help that program and this would be both for
