001e take can I do can I go yep you can use that good evening everyone if I can encourage us all to finish up grabbing our food if you're outside finish up our conversations and find a seat at uh we'd love to get started uh with tonight's [Music] program it's uh my honor to welcome you all here this evening certainly uh um you know a big night for the Boulder Valley School District big night for our community for those who I haven't had a pleasure the chance to meet my name is Rob Anderson I am the proud superintendent of bbsd uh it has been uh I've got like three mics going on over here I'm not that important okay um uh and it's uh it's it's bittersweet this evening because I know that um so
002many of us are here to celebrate our four brand new school board members but also to celebrate the legacy of the four board members who will be leaving the board this evening and so uh the first item on our agenda is to really um invite our um outgoing school board members up to make a few comments um say and share some thank yous then I will make a few content uh comments we have some gifts and then I believe our business meeting and I'm looking for Laura schaer right here there she is our business meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. is that is that correct and so um board members I don't know if you'd like to speak in any particular order um but if it's okay Lisa we'll start with you and go this way
003is that okay okay first up is Lisa well thanks this is bad luck I was uh hoping to listen to everyone else and just steal the best parts um I'm sad of course to leaving here today but thankful for all the incredible things we've had an opportunity to accomplish over the past several years but I think what I'm thinking about most today are not the accomplishments but the people who have been a part of them rob it has just been incredible working with you I think the community does not understand exactly how much you do or how every single accomplishment we have had in the last few years has been entirely because of your backing and your leadership and the endless work that you and Rob and Bill and Robin and Laura and everybody else
004who I am forgetting does all of the time to make it work um Richard it has just been such an incredible pleasure to serve with you I don't know what else to say I don't know how I would have made it through without you and Stacy certainly also I will um not miss having to do Hanukkah at casby with you this year but I will miss everything else and Kathy as well often times we have not agreed and I think that has been excellent for our school board and for our district and I have enjoyed all of my time with you um in addition I'm so thankful for everyone tonight Dan Tara Aaron Eric who came out and I think the last thing I would love to say is just to acknowledge two people in
005this room without whose support I would not have been able to make it through the last four years two people who have been in this building in the background of every covid Zoom meeting coming to school visits on days when they were not able to be in school my kids who were three and six when we started this and are now confident capable second and fourth graders Conquering the world and who have made it possible for me to be here every week so I'm just so thankful for everything that I've had the opportunity to do with each of you and with all of you um thank you so [Applause] much uh bues good evening everyone um wow you know 8 years really went by fast uh it seems like just yesterday you know we were
006elected and I was being sworn in in the other boardroom uh and uh uh but anyway it's gone so fast and uh I Echo a lot of the stuff that Lisa said uh especially with uh working with an excellent person like Rob um who I think is probably the most equity-minded superintendent in the state of [Applause] Colorado him him and his team all the people that Lisa mentioned uh are also very equity-minded and uh I appreciate it very much that when they brought presentations to the board for information presentations or study sessions that they had equity or diversity equity and inclusion already in their head and uh it made it very easy for for me to continue serving on this board because I knew that uh bord Val School District with Rob uh in his
007leadership that uh um our kids that are underserved our kids that uh uh historically have been missing out on opportunities uh fall into this achievement Gap uh that that uh Rob and and his Forward Thinking as it relates to the Strategic uh plan that we put or he put together and we adopted uh had every element in there to make sure that all the children in Boulder Valley School District uh would receive the attention that they need in order to be able to make it through their educational Endeavors uh Lisa for you it was uh uh wonderful for you to sit next to me on at the board table um and uh uh your support especially when we talked about equity and divers uh diversity and inclusion your voice was pretty loud okay and I
008really appreciate that uh and stay um you took her seat after she left and went became vice president and uh your work around the rfis you know you reminded me the last time when we had our board meeting around um the breakfast program and and and that wonderful stuff and and and and I kept saying well wait a minute when are we going to talk about recess or lunch program should I say recess before lunch and all that wonderful stuff you hey Richard I did an RFI and I said oops I must have not read it no but I did read it and a lot of schools are doing all that already so thank you so much for your advocacy on that uh Kathy uh I don't know what to say about you it seem
009like you're all over the map okay you're all over the place but your work at that table has been incredible okay and you follow the same footsteps that Tina wherever she's sitting um put together you know and terms of some of the presidents and Tina you follow the footsteps of Sam where is he at Sam fuka oh he left uh but uh but the leadership was there in terms of really pushing forward all the equity work that's being done here in laa without your support none of this would happen okay you are incredible to keep us straight and in terms of everything that we need to do and for you to have that special talent to be able to reach out to all of us is excellent and where this wonderful person right here amila
010am without her conducting in terms of making sure that we had Mike's working and all that wonderful stuff in this boardroom thank you so much for the work that you've done okay I really appreciate that and thank everybody all of you for the support that you gave to this board of education and to the equity work that's not finished in Boulder Valley oh I also have a very very very significant person I need to thank that's my my fa wow some sometimes sometimes I sometimes we would have like the real benefit that we used to get when we sit on the board of education that they used they fed us dinner okay and sometimes the dinner was good and sometimes it wasn't so good you know when it wasn't so good I wouldn't eat so
011I'd go home starving but then I would have some good dinner waiting for me when I got home so so thank you very much for all your support that you've given me thank [Applause] you so I'm going to keep this really short as many of you know this is not my comfort zone to talk in front of everybody about me um I'd rather be behind the scenes talking about some other things um I said at our last board meeting that we had the pleasure of working for the best superintendent and staff in the state of Colorado and having been involved at casby I know that to be true and uh we should all be feel very grateful that that is the case um we've been through a lot the past four years it was a
012long four years um but I am grateful for a few things and Dr Hill made me remember this um I'm so great one of the best things about being on the board was being able to go to graduations and one of my absolute favorite memories was being on the stage when my son Sam graduated and watching all of his friends walk by me and anyway Dr Hill got me all emotional earlier so I'm still like that um and I will be forever grateful in Dr Anderson snapping pictures and then the next year I was able to snap pictures when um Dr Anderson's daughter walked um in front of us too and I will always remember that as just a highlight of my board service if not one of my favorite memories ever um and um
013to my fellow board members I've already told you you know how much I've appreciated all of you um and uh Rick and my husband Rick and my mom are here and um they've always been so supportive on everything I've done so um I'll just leave it at that and I wish the new board well thank you well thank you everyone for being here I know everyone in this room means something special to everybody in this room it means a lot that you're all here um I don't have have a whole lot to say I wrote down a few things because I knew it'd be emotional um but I want to say thanks to Rob um everything you all have said he is an amazing superintendent I've he knows how to bring us all together he
014knows how to keep us directed he knows what the right things are um thank you Tina for helping us hire Rob um because she led that search and you're absolutely right we couldn't have done any better if we had written up an entire list of things that we wanted cuz Rob would have hit every single one of those so so thank you and thank you to Jess who's been allowing us to have you all the time I don't know how you'd get it all done thanks to my family I have my husband here um Steve I've got Rachel Daniel and Matt three of my kids um I couldn't have done it without them I just have to say Rachel now you don't have to text me and tell me that I've got things in my
015teeth or things hanging from my hair during the board meeting she keeps me at least looking somewhat presentable at the board table so I appreciate that um and I think um I'll just read kind of what I'd written and then we can hand it over so these days are filled with lots of emotions I think you've seen that um a joy for being with all of you um a little sadness obviously for having to say goodbye even though I know our paths will cross sorry it's been the honor of my lifetime to work for all of you we started as strangers I didn't know well Richard I knew you which is why you said I've been all over the place right but but the rest of you I didn't know you and I didn't know
016Nicole I didn't know Beth I didn't know Kitty and we all came together for the good of the district under Rob's leadership and I think that says something about the structure of a board and the structure of all of you and the quality of all of you as humans and the and the things that you hold to be right as we were all able to come together as Lisa said sometimes we had our differences but we always were rolling in the same direction and we are always I think putting the best needs of the district in front of all of our own personal needs um each of you made this journey more special and beautiful than it would have been without you I'm confident that with the amazing staff we have the talents of the
017new board our amazing superintendent that you will face any challenges that are presented to you I don't know what they are I remember Tina telling board perspective board members there will be a challenge you don't know what it is it'll take you off track we had a pandemic we had to hire a superintendent we had a recall we had a few challenges and we made it through all of them stronger and better and I think more focused um your St [Applause] your steadfast dedication to our community to public education to each and every student will serve you well as we work to close achievement gaps to provide Equitable opportunities for all students and to respect the Dignity of all our students in our staff and what can I say about Amela and Laura oh you
018make everything better both of you you take such good care of us you are like you're just behind the scenes making everything work like Richard said the microphones aren't working and all of a sudden Al's got I don't know where they come from 10 microphones to make it work and she quietly comes up and gives them to us she has everything set up when we walk in she stays late in the night to make sure everything's done she takes such good care of us she is such an amazing person I am deeply grateful that you work with us and I hope that our P will continue to cross so thank you and Laura I don't even know what to say you've been through everything with us so thank you so much for your steadfastness for
019your devotion for your kindness for your generosity I I don't even know what to say you're am amazing so thank you for everything so thank you everyone for being here um best luck to the new board I wish you all the best I don't know what challenges you have but I am confident that you will meet them in the best way possible under the stewardship of our amazing superintendent so thank you everyone and I'll hand it off to [Applause] Rob so so I'm going to try to make it make my way through a few comments uh for these amazing uh Community leaders and Kathy Richards uh Stacy Lisa um I I'm so grateful for each and every one of you um these past uh four years together have been just such an honor to serve
020um and it's important I think to share with everybody just a a a a just a a snippet of what your leadership has meant to this school district to the 30,000 students and their parents and our community um your your leadership has resulted in improved outcomes for students more opportunities for students at all levels less disproportionality amongst the subgroups of our students uh better more Equitable policies I know that it felt like we weren't getting as fast as we wanted to get but you've you've touched close to a 100 policies in your time here you have established the equity Council you focused on restorative practices uh you established the bbsd land acknowledgement that now is read at each and every one of our board meetings you made National Honor Society more accessible uh and Equitable
021for students all across our district you increase transparency for our community by establishing our strategic plan metrics and Reporting out about them and talking about the things that are going well but the challenges that still exist um and those challenges we don't hide from those challenges we put those out in the open so we can work on those you were able to approve more Equitable funding with our weighted differentiated funding formula that put $15 million into schools in all of the right ways um you helped support and lead the complete turnaround of all of our lowest performing schools I was um chatting with Sam earlier because when I was hired that was one of the biggest things that we were going to tackle back in 2018 is that Sanchez could not be a failing school
022Sanchez is no longer a failing school it's been recognized by the governor for its performance in addition to Coline Cole Pioneer all of our schools that were our lowest performing schools have all made significant improvements because of your leadership because of your leadership we have better facilities and showed up like getting AC in all of our buildings right and now I now I watch as as school districts that surround us are closing schools in August and September because they're too warm because of your leadership we were able to do that better CTE facilities a new New Vista High School and because of your leadership uh it wasn't good enough to put repairs in that school you said no we're going to wait we're going to do it right and now for those of you that
023have been driving by it's it's going to be an incredible incredible facility you've been able to support better academic programming more kids than ever in the distri in the Boulder Valley School District are accessing College before graduation career and Technic technical education courses leading to Industry certifications you pushed us to improve our bilingual programming to make sure that we expanded um those opportunities for students and they're taking those opportunities more than ever before um you've helped us improve Curriculum by adopting literacy curriculum by adopting foundations by adopting new Math middle school math curriculum uh you provided more supports for the safety um and social emotional health of our students adding counselors mental health supports and our school safety Advocates um better supports pushing us to do better for special education students emerging by lingual students
024um making sure that we're we're doing the very best that we can by those students by implementing co- teing models and and um implementing 80 to 90 improvements um based on an audit that you pushed for for our special education students um do you remember when high school kids had to go to school at like a.m. right we followed and talk about tough decisions with the leadership of of of board members this board this board Kathy uh you and Richard we were able to um to to put something in place place that folks take for granted now but I promise you it's making a difference um and and most recently you've really pushed us and staff to begin the really complicated work of addressing declining enrollment establishing The longrange Advisory Council um supporting us as
025we held the first ever bbsd is the place to be showcased and continuing to put the biggest challenges that our community and school district will phras front and center um and you know we didn't dodge those challenges we're really tackling them head-on um in addition to all of those things you helped lead this community through some three of the most um horrific tragedies I think this community has ever had to deal with including the king Su shooting uh the pandemic and Marshall fire and led with Grace and strength um and the decisions that that you made and the leadership you provided helped our community get out on the other side of all of those tragedies um personally I'll be I'll be forever grateful ful um to each and every one of you uh um you've
026taught me so much as a leader I I was talking with Jess my beautiful wife um hey babe uh earlier today and we were talking about um you know when I showed up here in 2018 I am certainly was certainly not the leader that I am today and I attribute that to to you all to the board members that preceded you to help coach me challenge Me Guide Me support me and um I uh I'm I'll be forever grateful for all of you and I'm going to miss you all very very much another round of applause to our amazing board members who are leaving and so we have some gifts that we'd love to present and this is where Laura gives me the gifts part of the presentation um and so as we call you

041grizzled veteran of the board um but I need to say how important experience is when I was first on the board there was a ton to learn I learned it by a couple of years I thought oh yeah I had the hang of this and then there was more to learn and then we had more crises and there was more to learn and I think the Board needs my leadership we've got some important work coming up that has to do with declining rollment and what we're going to do sorry this is in my ear it's hard what we're going to do about that and as the person the only person with more than two years of experience I believe I would be the best fit for president all right thank you um now Nicole um
042thanks for that nomination Alex um while I have only served two years in in this role on the board of education I have been both the chair of the audit committee and Treasure of the board prior of that I have a long tenure as a member of the district accountability committee and chaired that committee for many years those experiences I think are invaluable um the ability to leave lead a group with diverse opinions and perspectives to make big decisions uh will be to Kitty's Point very important as we take some of the big um decision points ah had along to clanning enrollment um and the like the role of the board president is largely administrative um I have proven during my tenure to be incredibly punctual to be prepared um to be willing to listen
043to everybody in the community and in this board table and I think those skills are also really important to bring to this role um if elected board president uh I would I will bring a perspective that um really elevates all of the members of this board finds a role for everyone to participate fully to be heard to be engaged to be valued um within the board itself and within the community it's definitely my leadership style to share the leadership um I also would really hope to double down and reinvigorate our efforts to engage our stakeholders both elected stakeholders at the city level at the county level at the state level which will be valuable to the work of the board ahead as well so in the end I feel like my depth and breath of
044experience my personal uh interpersonal communication skills my organizational skills will be an asset to this board as we tackle the challenges ahead thank you for your consideration thank you so now Laura do you have the sheets of paper so after you fill out your ballot Laura will collect them and Kathleen will tally them and then we'll let me know what the results are the new president is Nicole rajal Kathy walked away with my script the next item is the election of the vice president nomination should be called for and then closed the same secret ballot process thank you it's just what you're saying okay secret procedur is followed for the election of the vice president unless there is only one nominee in that case the board may vote to um by roll call congr are

048an affidavit concerning awareness of the compliance and confidentiality with executive sessions do we have to read that is there language okay no the board does not need to take action that's just a final procedural step okay the final step and we've done so many tonight so board members will have their certificate of election your oath of office and then the final step to make sure you're fully installed is the signing of an affidavit acknowledging the confidentiality requirements of state law for board meetings and executive session I think we'll do those out and those will be notorized so we can take care of that after the meeting is adjourned as that is the last order of business for this evening um I just wanted to read these prepared president's remarks as this new board of education
