044continue to enjoy his hiking rumor has it that we may be able to catch him at harbor fish across the street tim thank you for all your work with students we wish you the very best well those are hard acts to follow um i have the pleasure tonight uh to honor one custodian debbie who's with us here tonight deb's served the scarborough schools for 22 years when she first started in scarborough she actually didn't work for the facilities department she worked for the food service department she spent two years two years in food service and then joined the custodial ranks uh around 2002. she's spent the majority of her time between the high school and the middle school and anyone who has done anything remotely close to custodial work will understand that it is uh

045truly thankless work they are behind the scenes she's worked the evening shift three to eleven two to ten whatever the shift is that's what debbie has worked and it's a hard shift it's grueling work sometimes if you have an evening event custodians set up the tables take down the chairs vacuum up the popcorn from the bleachers after a basketball game they do all sorts of interesting and again thankless work because we're facilities we do things a little differently all these nice presentations about our professionals retiring i'm going to give you just a brief estimation by the numbers of what debbie has done for us in 20 years as a custodian the average custodian has approximately 15 rooms or more most times more in their area that they're responsible to clean each room has approximately 20

046desks which are cleaned each night chairs floors garbage cans all these things need to be attended to at night so let's just take a quick look 20 years 15 rooms conservative estimate 20 desks in each room in one year a custodian like that would clean 54 000 desks i'm going to put on my glasses over 20 years that would be 1 million 80 000 desks vacuuming carpets most of the areas in classrooms at the middle school in the high school are carpeted roughly 600 square feet per classroom that means over a year you'd vacuum 1.62 million square feet of carpeting over 20 years that number rises to 32 million four hundred thousand square feet of carpeting let's talk trash cans there are generally two in every classroom plus a recycling container trash alone 7 200

047trash cans per year and they're carted out to a dumpster in any kind of weather rain snow sleet and 90 degree temperatures over the course of 20 years that would be 144 trash cans emptied now let's talk about the really fun things custodians do they clean toilets and bathrooms let's just conservatively estimate that a custodian has 10 toilets that they're responsible for i guarantee you it's more than that but because i'm a mathematical idiot i'm going to keep it simple ten toilets a night eighteen hundred toilets per year thirty six thousand toilets over twenty years cleaned by one custodian debbie bean i'm going to go on and talk about very briefly all of the things that other things that custodians do like cleaning lockers and windows and dusting and cleaning up after games dodging the

048indoor track runners on the second floor of the high school remember that yes so debbie has served us well for 20 years and that's just the beginning of the numbers but really when asking those who have worked for with her and she actually retired in november so she's been retired for a little while now they have said the following things debbie is a great communicator she's direct but respectful she has a great sense of humor she's caring kind and thoughtful she's very strong-willed and spiritual and she's committed to her work just tonight when i arrived the first thing she asked me was how another custodian who's been struggling with health issues is doing that's the kind of person debbie bean is so debbie thank you so much for doing the thankless work and for your

04922 years of service at the scarborough schools good evening i'm chris rhode i'm the assistant director of special services and it's my honor tonight to talk a little bit about allison marchese as soon as i unfold my speech and it's small fun 37 years it's a lot of ground to cover well allison i'll start with a little background earned her ba from umaine orono and her masters in social work from adelphi university in new york after graduating allison worked as a social worker for several different day treatment programs for students with disabilities here in maine and then started her career in scarborough schools in 1985 as a social worker at the middle school allison then served for six years as the assistant principal at scarborough middle school and then was appointed to her current position

050as director of special services in 2003 and has served in that position for the past 20 years bringing allison to a grand total of 37 years of scarborough schools second place tonight to drew but not bad uh so during that time allison has been an active member of the main administrators of services for children with disabilities the cumberland county administrator recertification group um countless committees as a part of scarborough schools and one particular honor that allison had was being named um the maine special education administrator of the year in and this honor reflected the uh reflects the extremely high regard of which allison has always been held by her colleagues here and made other special education directors um i think it would be difficult everybody to agree to overstate the the pace of change in

051public schools over the past 20 years during which allison has served as director and i think that change has been even more pronounced in the area of special services and allison's leadership has been the driving force through those years here in scarborough and keeping pace with those changes and making sure that all of our students receive the services that they need and deserved a short list of those accomplishments because the long list would be more than one page for sure would be helping develop one of the first comprehensive programs for students with autism in public schools here in the southern maine area spearheading the use of social thinking curriculums to help students learn social skills supporting a swim program for students in our functional life skills programs supporting the development of a unified sports program

052supporting participation in special olympics supporting the implementation of innovative programs and support for executive functioning leading the special services department through the covet pandemic overseeing the implementation of highly effective reading programs the list really would go on and on it's been an amazing body of work for sure and uh while i'm sure allison would defer credit for a lot of this work to the the staff that she's worked with over the years um i think it's equally true that many of those staff would agree that none of this work would have been successful without allison's leadership so anyone who's worked with alison will attest to the many talents that make her an incredible school leader and again the short version of this list would include her ability to creatively problem solve on the fly her

053deep understanding of the technical aspects special services work her ability to listen to all viewpoints and create consensus her ability to project calm in the most stressful situations her empathy and understanding for students parents and staff her patients her ability to keep the focus on students in all situations no matter how challenging her tireless work ethic her joy in her work her sense of fairness and ethics and last but not least her amazing sense of humor um so todd shared some numbers i only have one number tonight to share but um really when we think about the allison's time here that um she has probably directly impacted the lives of over 2 000 students through the course of her time as director here and it's a really a wide variety and unique and diverse group

054of kids with different strengths different weaknesses abilities and disabilities hopes and dreams and um you know i think this is really a legacy of lasting impact that anybody would be proud to be a part of um on a personal note i've worked as assistant director for allison with 17 years and it has really just been a stroke of great luck and privilege for me to have had such a great friend and mentor over the years a person i could share a story with a worry a win for the kids that we work with uh and at least once a day a good laugh to keep everything in perspective so well we'll miss allison greatly i know she's looking forward to a well-earned retirement in florida with her husband charlie who just retired last night she's

055got other family and friends in the area so um of course we wish you all the best within the next leg of your journey so alison marchese i have a pleasure of sharing uh information about a few more of our retirees um mike grant uh is one of our bus drivers and uh sarah redmond could not be here this evening but asked me to share this on her behalf mike grant joined the bus department in january of 2007 he has been a dedicated and dependable driver on our team for the last 15 years his work ethic is exceptional and he was a major factor in moving the department in a positive direction he has performed his job with pride and confidence and his co-workers consider him a leader his involvement with the wellness committee helped

064always prepared she actually wrote me a speech for tonight so that i would be prepared about a month ago so thank you julie you helped me fill in my template for tonight she has been an active school a community member working on things like veterans day memorial day presentations for students she's always made sure that they were involved with the community she's created a role called a classroom note writer people in the building would get little love notes and thank you notes with a piece of chocolate and we always knew that came from kids in julie's class it was a great pick-me-up she also had students send notes to nursing homes and organizations outside of school and that was always her way to give back she always engaged students in reflection and looking back she

065would often make um in back in the day it was a dvd of the year in review for students to look at what they had done what they had experienced and she's modified that over the years julie really has always viewed herself as a lifelong learner and she's always exemplified that i can speak to that in looking at what she's learned and how she's pushed herself over the past few years as all teachers have really through the pandemic but julie has really just been exemplary in her use of technology and how she's just really never never said no and never given up she's really proud of the skills that she's learned and the level that she's reached in her career her students have grown academically and socially they've been challenged and they've had fun in

066her retirement she plans to spend more time with her husband her family and her beautiful grandchildren so we wish her all the best congratulations julie and last but not least our last retiree this evening is kelly harriman who's been a teacher at blue point school for 22 years the second retiree that i'm pleased to speak about tonight is kelly harriman she has worked in the district for 23 years she started out as a multi-age teacher at pleasant hill school and then moved to blue point where she's taught multi-age looping first and second grade most recently she's been a second grade teacher kelly really has exemplified a love of literacy of mentorship she's had several interns and student teachers over the years she's also really dedicated herself to curriculum work she's contributed to many of those

067projects over the years one of the quotes from kelly is that she one of her greatest accomplishments that she cherishes is when she has helped students to meet their goals and to envision possibilities for themselves which i think is a really beautiful way to look at education [Music] kelly is a really kind-hearted really generous teacher she has has been wonderful to work with with her colleagues she really nurtures kids and their love of learning and her classroom is a really warm and welcoming place so it's been great to work with her in her retirement she looks forward to nurturing her future granddaughter who is due to make her debut to the world in september so we wish her all the best as well so congratulations kelly all right um now that we we've gotten through

075district emergency management team that's that's actually been meeting uh in particular this spring several times uh we're we're purchasing and implementing uh new uh emergency management software um that i think is really going to uh make our our drills and emergency crisis management even in communication even more uh efficient and effective so so we're excited to implement that and i'm going to be working on that through the through the um summer and into the into the fall and then also we're we're having another meeting um next week and and also have um uh extended an invitation to uh one town counselor who's interested in attending the meeting as well as uh um a board member as well board of education to to sit in on that on that meeting uh as well coming up so

076the the the scarborough really has had emergency crisis management procedures and protocols in place across town departments police and fire and school for several years uh and is really actually a model for a lot of other communities and how to um you know be proactive and preventative and then also um making sure that that we're doing everything we can for uh make sure our school campuses are safe and and if people may or may not have noticed in the last couple weeks too there has been a little more enhanced presence with uh with our um officers and school resource officers and then around campus as well so i just wanted to extend you know many thanks to everyone who's involved and and all that collaboration and and focus on school safety so um and then

077secondly just just again to um put another plug-in for um monday evening june 6th so this coming monday from 6 to 8 p.m we're going to have a second virtual community forum related to the building building committee project and new primary school projects so and that's going to be focused uh on site selection and it's actually it's going to be online there will be a link in there it is going to be participatory in the sense that um you know there's there's a virtual uh back and forth similar to to our first um presentation by harriman so that's coming up again that's june 6th on monday from 6 to 8 p.m and the links the link to that will be sent out and put up on the website and that's all the news is fit

078to print for me are there any questions for jeff all right agenda item 10.0 is the chairs report um i know jillian is going to cover um early voting i'm just going to put in the plug that we would really appreciate everybody um going out and voting it's it's how early voting is happening right now and if that's not an option um in-person voting on june 14th um so the second thing on my agenda is that the main school board association um they annually hold a delegate assembly um each board in maine has the opportunity to elect a delegate that goes and represents scarborough for us would represent scarborough um at the delegate assembly so what they do it's the the assembly is essentially the policy-making body of the of the association so as a

079delegate you would represent scarborough and it's um you would help to adopt resolutions you would also help to write amendments or update amendments to the association so you would represent scarborough or delegate would represent scarborough's views on that um to give you some dates there um this uh assembly will be saturday october 22nd it will be virtual it starts at 9 30 a.m and then the other requirement for this is to attend a regional meeting on september 8th and that's to get familiar with the process the voting process um the the resolutions that you will be discussing and the assembly and kind of gather that information so um is there anybody interested in doing and being our representative that would be question one what's the date again um saturday october 22nd that's a virtual meeting

080i'm outgoing so i don't think it would be a good use of of you know the knowledge to i think it should be somebody that's just starting on the board yeah i'll i'll do that shannon okay fantastic thank you jillian um i also want to go ahead and let you know um of the date that the main school management association will hold their annual fall conference um year will be october 27th and 28th um it will be in person this year so for the first time in a well almost three years yeah so um that is exciting it will be in augusta um i attended my first last year i found it to be incredibly insightful and helpful it's a really good opportunity to learn about your role and as a school board member um

081what you know kind of network with other educational leaders and really get an idea and a sense of what's impacting um schools in maine right and what's going on around around the state so i just want to give those dates that you can put them on your calendar um hopefully this is something that we can all we can all attend all right um and i think that that's all i have for mine so um i'm going to go through the committees and if i if i forget someone please let me know um building steering to me do we have an update today do we do the student representative report first oh yes i'm sorry yes we do agenda agenda item 11.0 is the student representative report so we'll start with you leah um so [Music]

082pleasant hill had author and illustrator kevin hawks come in to talk with the second graders and actually came to all of the elementary schools and he just shared his creative process and sort of what he does to illustrate um and on the next slide he actually came and did that with blue point as well um on the left and then they also had the chaonky foundation come in and talk about marine sciences and do a sort of fun activity with them and they also had a balanced bikes field day for the kindergarten class um so it looks like it was a lot of fun um and then eight corners um had a second grade field day and it looks like they all competed on teams and wentworth um they on the left there's a video

083they had their fifth grade band concert recently so that's a little excerpt from that [Music] um that was made extra amazing since they learned to play the instruments in nine months and mostly with masks so that's really cool um there was also a little art walk display um for the family's before and after the concerts so it sounds like it was a big event and fifth graders also had their dare graduation and sarah and andre were featured essayists for that and they had future dreams recognition as well as a warrior challenge next week which was supposed to be this week but it was postponed from the rain they're also decorating lockers and they're going to do a victory lap around wentworth so it sounds like they have a lot of fun activities planned they also

084had a student organized fundraiser for refugee strong i can't get enough of that i'm trying to move on to the next one which is an organization connected to the school-wide read-aloud and author visit um from when stars are scattered and the students did a dollar drive and created educational slides and morning announcements and on the top left of the two pictures the entire third grade students took a trip to the maine wildlife park they had a great time and classes have been spending a lot of time in the garden and they've been measuring planting and weeding and doing a lot of work there and on the next slide there's today start up the second grade step-up visits to wentworth so those are the ambassadors the current third grade students and they did a live q

085a they gave advice and they gave tours to the incoming third graders and they have a special tradition that each incoming third grader plants a sunflower seed so when they come back they have a sunflower that greets them that they planted which is really cute and that's it for the elementary schools okay here i go the last one um so at the middle school the eighth grade english classes they learn about the holocaust and on may 18th um author and podcaster rachel serrati visited the library at the school she gave a little um presentation about her story her grandmother was a holocaust survivor and um she shared with the students not only um her story but also about of her grandmother's life but also about podcasting and creative writing stuff like that to tie it

086all together and so that's her and then the picture of the students there and then so my next slide um before we play this video it's a tradition at the high school for um to do the little chalk on the sidewalk on where you're going to college next year and we actually did that today as our last day it was so fun it was so many pictures taken it was a little sentimental but i have a video of the chalk walk do you want to see that way to go guys so that's just a little short video some of the art skills were crazy i mean there's one girl drawing a black bear for you maine i was very highly impressed yes yes yeah after yeah definitely and then before i go and announce our

087next year's junior representative i just want to say thank you to you all um you guys have been great mentors and i was thinking back like to my first meeting and i was kind of shy and i was very nervous very nervous and i just think you guys were so welcoming and you've really helped my confidence grow which i'm very excited to use in the future so thank you all and then on that note i don't have a slide for this but um i'd like to introduce colby shumway who was elected he is a sophomore and he's going to be next year's junior representative so colby if you don't mind you can go up to the podium hello i'm sure most of you know me already but uh it's an honor to be elected to

088this position uh i run i do track i do model u.n and i was on the student council for the past two years and i've always wanted to do this job for a very long time and i've had my eye on it i guess for a while but uh i'm looking forward to representing the student voice and collaborating with the board to have some good change and help out the community so thank you um congratulations colby you'll do great it's such an amazing experience so good luck all right um are there any comments or questions uh motion to have gabby giftas the first alumni student representative [Laughter] thank you thank you gabby for for everything you you represent scarborough and your town and your peers so well and welcome colby we look forward to working

089with you too so congratulations all right so now we'll get to those committee reports so agenda item 13.0 is are the committee reports and flip to the first it's communication so jillian you're up first all right so we we had our um we had a meeting today it was at 11 30 on zoom we are our next meeting is july 7th at 11 30 am also my zoom and routinely every thursday first thursday of the month um and so like shannon said we would like everybody to get out and vote uh you can vote early now or you can vote at the high school on june 14th from 7 am to 8 pm thank you perfect thank you jillian are there any questions no but i have one comment that i'm gonna add um you

090guys are gonna probably start getting harassed by the communications committee to help us start sharing stuff on social media yeah that's a plug if any of the committees have have things they want to yeah talk about very good thank you all right facilities yes we had a productive meeting a couple of weeks ago we talked about potentially commissioning a new enrollment study in the best time to do that given that the town has a few things going on that might change the growth numbers that go into that formula that i'm not going to pretend to understand so we're still talking about that because the building committee is probably also going to need those numbers coming up soon so it's on our radar we also got an update from todd on the high school stem lab

091i don't know if anyone remembers but that was approved in the fy 22 budget and the high school never had a stem lab so it is just about done they're finishing up over the summer and we'll be good to go for the fall so it's really exciting this will known as the stem lab we got a quick turf update which also is on schedule to be ready to go in august and i just want to thank jeff and his team for moving that along because i think we will all breathe a sigh of relief when that is in place and our student athletes in the community has a safe surface to play on so thank you for that and the other thing that we quickly talked about were because we've been getting a lot of

092feedback from the community and from the council about a cost estimate for the k-8 building project and it's sort of a complicated thing but we are aware of it i didn't want it to get lost in the building committee so we wanted to bring it back to one of the regular board committees but we decided that it will live in finance for now to keep it as a running agenda item and coming up we did start talking a little bit about some traffic and pedestrian safety concerns that we've seen on campus so that's sort of where we're gonna shift to next very good thank you kristen are there any um questions or comments for kristen all right building committee this is me too um the building committee had its regular meeting i don't even couple

093weeks ago as well the we're going to start with the forming of the subcommittees starting with communication so hopefully people will start to see a lot more coming out of that at the community dialogue jeff with harriman gave an update on the project which was great hopefully people got to tune into that and if you didn't it is available on the website and jeff covered off on the upcoming second community forum of the site selection on june 6th i really would encourage anyone who is interested in this process to tune in because there's so much that goes into the site selection and it's i think it's very interesting i think it will really help people wrap their heads around what's happening and the interactive features that harriman uses are a great opportunity for people to

094have their opinions heard on a location for a school very good um are there any questions for all right thank you john uh we went over uh in the curriculum committee meeting which was on the 18th of may i think it was it wasn't march i don't know it was sometime uh but we went over the march 18th staff dave reports uh and actually i don't know if anybody can click there to uh you don't have to what i'm just saying if anyone out there that wants to find information it's really some good information on the slides that that monique put together so i included it in that it's also accessible through the curriculum committee section of the webpage so if people want to look at it you can find out just different numbers of

095uh you know statistics of what's uh what what happened in different grade levels for for some of the uh reporting that we did the fall to winter growth work study initiative things like that uh that and the uh summer planning for uh different programs that are available this year it's all uh listed in there i just thought it was good information that people might want to take a look at so i included it very good perfect thank you john are there any questions or comments for john thank you all right um i'm a negotiator i know we have negotiations and um a dei update yeah i didn't do a slide just because i'm terrible at them but uh i guess i'll start with dei we've selected our um committee members the combined committee members that

096are returning in in new community members are composed of two board members that's me um and shannon as well for administration we have kelly crosby and jeff bruno for teachers and staff members we have michelle shep amy sullivan maria champagne stacey knapp and catherine newell we have seven community members slash parents uh that's uh sarah alvarez nicole diroff andre eason betty kabashi frayla turpinian kiana wilkinson and anusha romano john for students we have isabel liu addison leno mackenzie stimpson isabella hernandez kaylee q and andy drosso we did have our first meeting on may 31st um [Music] really we just got on the books had introductions we reviewed expectations and the updated committee charter which um had been approved by the board so there were a few changes to the committee chart um charges you might

097remember jeff gave the committee an update on the dei work that the district has been involved in and we've discussed next steps we're gonna um discuss meeting either every two weeks or every three weeks um as we discussed at our last the last time we discussed dei and discuss and discuss when we were last um before the school board um discussing dei we had the debate about um [Music] bringing the board members up to speed with the information we talked about having a reporting committee member so we shared that in the in the um actual committee it sounded like people there were were okay with that so um we're gonna start working during the summer which isn't necessarily ideal particularly because um some of those students are moving on but i think some of them

098are gonna you know remain on for the summer at least and um we talked about maybe have a brainstorming session next time just to identify priorities and and try to um get action plan items recommended for the board and um just really see what what types of things we can float out there for ideas so that's i think the dei update all right are there any questions for alicia yeah how many um students are going to be moving on after the summer um well i know three-year seniors gabby's telling me thank god for gabby and i know that one one did um email me and indicate that that individual was going to be moving on and so the i don't know about the others if they're if they're able to participate or not um that's

099not a discussion that we've had but so we'll fill those in the fall yeah yeah that's cool yeah there are three that are not seen there are three that are not seniors um but will be so they'll be at 12th 11th and 10th so we've got three three of the four classes represented our grade level zone all right any other questions all right okay so for negotiations we are um bargaining for three contracts right now the administrative contract has started we do have our um first maintenance meeting scheduled and we have professional staff negotiations ongoing um we're meeting how frequently every three weeks maybe for for that for professional staff every two weeks um [Music] so uh currently we've heard from from the professional staff what their priorities are and and some of the things

100that they would like to be considered and they've explained the rationale and that's been somewhat time consuming because there are a number of us who are not familiar with the intricate operations of the schools so they've been sort of filling us in how many of those things work it's been pretty educational for us but unfortunately it's you know pretty tedious for i'm sure for those of um who do that work we've um agreed that we are going to continue to be through the summer and and really start to meet more frequently and um our hope is that by the fall we'll have um an agreement or the end of the summer thank you are there any questions all right thank you are there any liaison reports updates all right um agenda item 14.0 is a
