001[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 7 o'clock and I'd like to call the meeting to order please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance next we'll have approval of minutes and bear with me because we have a lot of minutes to approve uh November 8th 2023 special minute meetings you have all received a copy of the minutes in the packet are there any corrections or abstentions can I have a motion to approve the November 8th 2023 special meeting minutes as written second and a motion to approve by commissioner Carlson and a second by commissioner Fitz Simons Bula all in favor I any opposed motion passes March 5th 2024 special meeting minutes you all have received a copy of minutes in your packet are there any corrections or abends can I have a motion to approve the March 5th

0022024 special meeting M minutes as written all in favor any opposed motion passes April 25th 2024 special meeting minutes you have all received a copy of the minutes in your packet are there any corrections or exensions can I have a motion to approve the April 25th 2024 special meeting minutes as written I'll in favor so oh sorry getting ahead of myself yeah through the chat I'm gonna make please make sure you're hitting your mics on so we can hear everybody thanks okay uh commissioner Carlson made the motion can I have a second second all in favor I I any opposed motion passes May May 14th 2024 special meeting minutes have you all you have all received a copy of the minutes in your packet are there any corrections or exensions through the chair uh I'd

003like to add something that was missing from the meeting minutes um and it was in regards to um the motion on the floor for conventing into public session I'd like it to be added that commissioner G Antonio raised for discussion in the board that we postpone moving in to public session because of the extremely late hour of the session and add that as part of the discussion in the agenda and the concerns about the um transparency to the public thank you okay so you would like us to add in the motion that you requested that we postpone having a convers in open meeting having a conversation about when the motion was put on the floor and seconded so we had a valid motion on the floor which was seconded um during discussion of that motion

004prior to the vote to go into public session my discussion was that I was concerned about the late hour I had asked the board to consider if they would delay the public meeting piece and that was the end of my discussion we voted and the vote still went into public session that was just to out that there was we can't put anything in the meeting minutes that happened during executive session we're not even supposed to to discuss that publicly so we will not be able to add that what we we can add that we were we had to convene back in public session because it was a special meeting so we had to convene back into public session so if you're if you're requesting that we add something that happened while we were in executive

005session we cannot do that I'm only requesting that I add the discussion that's labeled on the motion so if there's a parliamentarian decision that needs to be made I'm happy to take the um the advice of the parliament are that can call us whether or not that's appropriate or not I feel pretty confident but if Dr derer wants to weigh in I don't see of any exception where to talk about that I think you're ating out two items so uh the minutes before you to be approved for the special meeting would reflect um actions that took place in the public portion of the meeting anything else I believe your request would be to appropriately uh have that information in the meeting notes which are two separate things I'm happy with it being in the meeting

006notes okay but that's not what we're voting so there would be no action right now okay so does anyone else have any corrections or extensions through through the chair if I may um I make a motion uh to well there's a correction I'm making a motion that there be a correction in the minutes um to read the board amend the minutes of the meeting of May 14 2024 to replace the words following discussion and that follow Commissioners voted to eliminate the position of executive director of communications with the words following extensive discussion and review of information about Mr Burke's accomplishments that commissioner G GI anonio brought for discussion with the board and I can repeat that excuse me if that's helpful it would be helpful if you repeated it thank you sure the correction would

007be the board amend the minutes of the meeting of May 14 2024 to replace the words following discussion and that follow Commissioners voted to eliminate the position of executive director of communications with the words so here's what um the correction would read following extensive discussion and review of information about Mr Burke's accomplishments that commissioner g g Antonio brought for discussion with the board an uh through the chair um my only uh additional comment about that is that I I did discuss a list of accomplishments that was provided to me that that position achieved and I was talking about the position not the person because I was trying to in the discussion understand um the pieces regarding the salary that went along with the initial posting versus the subsequent posting and so I needed to read

008the job posting responsibilities as they were posted and also the accomplishments of that position while it was being held and so I just want to delineate that I was discussing accomplishments of that position in a means to have a discussion about um whether or not the duties of that were posted also match the accomplishments so I just want to separate out the individual from the position okay so the motion on the floor that commissioner Simmons made says that you presented information can you say yeah maybe just to be um concise I can read that again if that's allowable so we're using the words following extensive discussion and review of information about Mr Burke's accomplishments that commissioner jantonio brought for discussion with the board and so that is the motion that is on the floor if

009there may be a second then or not then we could open up for discussion I'd like to make a motion to amend we have an motion and we have a second on the floor we can open it up for discussion again so like discuss it further right I would just request the motion to amend and strike the term Brian Burke and just add the term communications director the rest of the wording was fine the the document that you shared were the accomplishments of Brian Burke they were a list of accomplishments that were provided to me about the position un fortunately from Bri the semantics well it was authored by Brian Burke because he was the only one in the position so this is where we're getting into you know with the discussion on the agenda

010was about a position and so that's why I'm being particular because we were need to only discuss what is on the agenda and I did not use his name as an individual and so that's where I'm seeking the the language strike because we were there to discuss the potential of elimination of a position so I needed to make sure that the accomplishments matched the job descriptions and the job duties and that was the perfect for reading off and I'm glad you didn't put the present because I didn't present anything it was information that I had asked for so I could say you know so I could have this discussion about the position it is unfortunate that there was only one person with that position title and so I just don't want to get stuck into

011the semantics I agree that there was a discussion about accomplishments but in the context that we were discussing a position and whether or not uh we there was some discussion about the salary about the way it was originally posted the salary about when um the position was actually filled and there was a was a difference right but there was also a list of responsibilities and accomplishments that were demanded of that position and part and the tail end of that discussion was that I felt that between looking at the job responsibilities that were posted and the person applied for it also matching the accomplishments with that that it Justified the salary so that was the context of my discussion during that time and that's why I'm looking for clarity about the position wording versus the individual

012wording I understand what you're exuse me through the chair we needed to First clear that motion the first motion that Maria put on the table I need you to ask is everyone in favor then we could have started the discussion and if there's another amendment then we're going to put another amendment on the table but can we go back and ask are you in favor of this motion and we already have the two motions but I need you to call it for the for the table please okay so we have a motion we have a motion on the table we have commissioner Carlson who second uh all in favor I I I this is to discuss well this is to move first motion forward and then if we want to additionally we have have a

013we had to put the motion on the table for it to be a discussion we started the discussion before you had cleared that totally post and the motion passes for the discussion for disc okay so chren I know I would just repeat my comments if that's easier you can go back in the recording and just to add my comments move toward I would like a repeat of those recognized in the meeting after the motion was voted on on the floor and open for discussion y okay so just to be clear is that we're going to put that Amendment on the table is that the amendment you like you'd like to put on the table Kristen no we have that one in that and then we need would like to amend it you're saying it be

014a second amendment through through the chair so right now we would be discussing um this first amendment and certainly in the discussion if someone would like to have something else considered um but then we would have to vote on this and if it doesn't pass then we would consider another amendment if it doesn't I a second option would be the person who made the motion could ask to amend the original motion and then you could have one vote thank you Dr derer appreciate that um but I think before that I would want to consider the discussion okay so would anyone else like to say something about yeah through the chair through the chair I I I understand Kristen's point but I don't know how you separate the person from the job title would be one

015person one job whether we're discussing the person or the job it's the same through the chair um just want to say very respectfully I do have a different recollection of that conversation um what I honestly recall and like I say very respectfully um it was in my perspective a presentation um about an individual's achievements um I do remember and recall that the conversation we kept trying to bring it back to the position that's what with at the heart of that conversation and it kept drifting back to an individual um so I do have a different recollection um and I do want to express that and put that on the floor we can agree to disagree yeah um the um uh it's unfortunate that you know um maybe during the minutes portion maybe this wasn't captured

016or not so I don't recall when the minutes changed hands of being taken during that meeting do you recall was it before or after because I know that you didn't take minutes for the full meeting so I took minutes for the executive session um which is my understanding is my role as board secretary um when it goes back into public session um I guess my question would be who then assumes taking those minutes um and that's something that I I would love clarification on and if it was supposed to be me I I genuinely apologize I didn't know um we didn't have a board secretary there that night so it would either be you or whoever was assigned and it seems that that was something that didn't Happ would the would the would my colleagues

017be um amenable to putting both the position the title and the name sure I don't know the process for the chair would that mean that it could read something like following extensive discussion review of information about the executive director of communication Brian Burke's accomplishments is that what is while in that position right while in that position um while in the position so following extensive discussion in review of information about the executive director of communications Brian Burg's accomplishments while in the position correct is that what you're considering I recognize Eric Carlson commissioner Carlson's comment you know we I I fully recognize that it's one person one position but really we were discussing position so as long as both are recognized I'm fine with that okay any other discussion with no other discussion Maria can you make

018the new motion I hope that I can capture this um motion I'm to amend the the original motion um the new language May read following extensive discussion in review of information about the executive director of communication Brian Burke's accomplishments while in the respective position that commissioner G Antonio brought to the board for discussion and can I have a second second all in favor hi I I motion passes June 5th 2024 regular meeting minutes you all have received a copy of the minutes in your pocket are there any corrections or extensions hearing none and I have a motion to approve the June 5th 2024 regular meeting minutes as written move second all in favor I I I hi motion passes next we have committee reports the first is finance and operations okay Wednesday June 12th meeting

019uh actually I'm going to just bring it up to this one right now um currently the budget is behind by about $4.8 million um so we have a short fall and Lynn is going to explain these things later on but just want to bring that up that was part of the discussion we had um we approved a bames donation um artwork uh from Bristol artarts and culture Historical Society um and school time change parents are going to be we're going to find out whether or not they'll approve uh start time five minutes earlier and end time five minutes later again per because of the buses the the buses that you know have been late to school allowing extra time beyond that we voted to put Sr money in for water main repair and now this

020month we find out that that motion or that approve that that um srr money cannot be or may not be used for water main repair we're going to go back to the state to find out whether or not we can use it that's my okay that we're just putting two of them together in one shot okay um next student achievement and outcomes student achievement committee met on June 26 um and I first want to start off by saying thank you to commissioner Simmons um I was away and she graciously facilitated um there was a discussion item on the gifted program in twice exceptional and then there was eight curriculum revisions that we're going to be learning more about tonight um and then just to defer over to commissioner Simmons since she facilitated checking in did

021I miss anything or anything additional to add I think that captures it thank you okay thank you uh next we'll have Labor Relations um nothing additional report we did not meet we're let's face it the contracts are all going through we're working on the details um we're pretty close thank you next is the chair report in response to those who have requested an update about the investigation at Ivy Drive I requested that the board attorney prepare a statement that I could share with you tonight I will now read the statement some members of the community have asked about the status of the investigation of alleged testing irregularities at Ivy Drive School your questions and concerns are understandable given that the issue relates to a state Mand mandated testing the Connecticut state department of education has

022assumed complete responsib ility for conducting the investigation Bristol Public Schools are cooperating in the investigation but we are in no control over the scope of the investigation or the timing of any findings we appreciate oops I'm sorry we appreciate and share your concern for the students and staff at Ivy Drive superintendent white reached out to the Connecticut state department of education for an update and the department advised her yesterday that the investigation will continue at least until mid August and that the department will then need to decide upon next steps given that in given that notification the Board of Education cannot say when the state investigation will be complete however the Board of Education and superintendent white are committed to assuring that the students at Ivy Drive School are not adversely affected by the state

023investigation and that the board will be appointing an intern principal at the school this summer to make sure that the education at Ivy Drive School continues without disruption or distraction thank you next we have the superintendent report yes I'm sorry could you just forward the written statement by the attorney to all Commissioners that way we have something to read verbatim that was provided to us by Council should um community members um ask us in the future thank you really chair can I get a copy of that as well thank you absolutely it can be included in the minutes as well perfect thank you I will send it to Susan okay thank you thank you good evening board ofed Commissioners central office staff first Public Schools Community I would like to start my report by congratulating

024students who graduated the class of 2024 um I was able to attend some of the ceremonies I want to thank the Board of Ed Commissioners as well as central office staff who also participated and some who spoke during the ceremonies and a special thank you to the school teams who really did a wonderful job planning some really some really special Ceremonies for the students and the families I know they appreciated it very much we were at some of us were at Bristol Central where some of us were at Bristol Eastern on a particularly particularly very hot day and both schools did uh a nice job trying to accommodate everyone who was there so thank you to everyone for that and just want to say as I said in my speech at Bristol Eastern the graduates

025always have a home here in Bristol so you're always welcome to come back um next for the 2024 seal of by literacy recipients I'd like to ask Mr LEC Ward to come and provide an update good evening Commissioners um so I just wanted to add my congratulations to the superintendent's report to the 93 students who qualified for the Seal of biliteracy um I wanted to join uh you all and the superintendent in celebrating the hard work of both the students and the teachers that is represented in this accomplishment we've made the Seal of by literacy um a real goal of ours in the world language Department we want to prepare students to be able to communicate in foreign languages but also to appreciate the um cultural diversity of um of the world that they can

026access to those languages and we've been working hard to incorporate both communication and culture in our coursework but also in a variety of trips experiences that come before you frequently here at the board and we want to appreciate um thank you for your support in those experiences because they're part of the success that we're seeing there in the C literacy every year so I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the Seal of by literacy but mostly wanted to express my appreciation of both the teachers and students and also Express their gratitude to you for supporting them in their efforts so thanks through the chair yes I feel like this is even more than last year uh it's about the same I would have to look I would have to look to see

027exactly but it's I think it's pretty close seems to be pretty close I felt like that was a little um increase from last year but I don't have the exact data but it's impressive some of that is also too that represents students who are taking uh we offer the testing uh that's required for the co biliteracy to all our students in level four and above of oral language but we also offer it to any student in the high schools who may be bilingual and just want to take the test to be recognized for that that ability um so the level of interest that and the number of students who take us up in that offer can also change a little bit from year to year and may be part of the difference in scores but

028it's pretty close to what it was last year who the chair yes I I just want to uh tail on to commissioner um comments and that the appreciation for having a program like this in our district and the amount of languages that the testing is offered and it's not just one or two it's extensive even in you know languages that um people weren't expecting to be able to sit for uh it's a challenge it's an honor for those that receive the symbol they do get something on their diploma indicating that as well so I I'm glad that bristo's a a champion of this program and and the um the breath and scope and the participation from the student willing to sit it's an important distinction too that students don't actually earn the seal until they

029graduate so what I'm sharing with you all today is the number of students who have completed the foreign language component that's required for that sealed by literacy so some of those students are Juniors and they'll earn the seal officially next year when they graduate um but that's the number of students who completed the testing requirement for a foreign language this year thank you thank you thank you and we also wanted to of course thank the language teachers across the district who work so hard to prepare the students for these assessments and encourage others to take them and again we want to offer huge congratulations to those students who are we wanted to talk to you about the 2025 French Exchange program this is an ongoing Exchange program uh with Miss Rochester and her students were

030planning to host students from France again this spring 2025 students are between 15 and 16 years old and have taken between two and six years of English at school we anticipate between 18 and 27 students will participate um we're estimating that it would be from March 28th to April 29th 2025 American host families provide food and lodging for the French students um the students will come to school with their bral classmates at least twice during their stay and their weekend activities um that are planned to students every want to give you a preview of that and we'll have more information about that dat gets closer learning Heroes like to turn over to Dr Peter provide an update thank you Miss White uh learning Heroes the update here is that we have five Person Public School

031leaders that have been enrolled in the family engagement Leadership Institute orelli uh they will engage with a national cohort of school leaders over the upcoming school year our first session begins July 16th which is appropriate because it will bookend our district climate Camp so there'll be more information to come as we engage in that process thank you Dr Deeter and finally the partnership for educational leadership this is forly the Connecticut Center for school change um before Dr Carbone left the district um they had approached her about Cal Public Schools being invited for a unique year-long professional learning opportunity really focused on developing systems processes and resources necessary to support going Improvement efforts with a goal that ensuring that all these initiatives are coherent sustainable and effective they were very impressed with the work that's been

032happening so far in Bristol so they wanted to help us to reach the next level um there are several dates planned during the school year um but we had our first session with them um last month Dr renberg was with us as on with harle Porton and Le Gard from the office of teaching and learning so he will provide you with during the year on this work but you wanted to give you a preview of that and finally I wanted to say the Board of Ed Commissioners um I will be restarting the Friday weekly updates there's a lot of other information and exciting initiatives that are happening in the district that we wanted to make you aware particularly there's a lot of work U being planned this summer in terms of professional learning for teachers

033and administrators we have some Retreats coming up Dr GTO mentioned CL Camp so I'll be able to send you more information about that this Friday morning that concludes my thank you um next we have the consent agenda can I have a motion to approve the consent a agenda which will include items 6.1a to 6.1 F motion to approve second all in favor I I I right opposed motion passes next we will have public comment Mrs ever did you receive any submitted public comment thank you okay I will read the rules of public comment if everyone is requested to everyone is requested to address the chair for recognition each speaker must State his name or her name and address all speakers must observe rules of common etiquette personalities are not to be injected anyone VI violating

034this rule will be denied the floor unless waved by the chairperson or a majority of the board each speaker shall limit their remarks to 3 minutes a speaker will not be recognized for a second second time on the same topic and board members will not respond directly to comments during the board meeting the superintendent will direct the question to the appropriate staff member for followup first I have Morris Patton 49 Field Street thank you do I have to read my name and address into the record as well more spring Pat 49 Field Street um thank you all for few minutes I have here um I'd first like to welcome our Acting Superintendent to our wonderful community of Bristol um I was able to see your resume and I think that you're going to do a

035great job in this role um for however long you have it um I am personally a product of the Bristol school system and my daughter who actually just won Miss Connecticut teen so you see the smile on my face because I'm so proud this week um because it also came with a four-year tuition scholarship to Alabama um so super happy there um but I am super excited for her senior year this year U and I'm very happy that you're going to play a role Ro in leading that last year her educational career um at least in Bristol so welcome um Madam chair I also want to extend just a thank you to the board um with my daughter being in high school I tend to watch I keep a very close watch on school culture

036and Community um and I think that you guys all have done a fantastic job at really advancing what I call diversity equity and inclusion initiatives um I think way too often people equate that with the color of a person's skin and forget about all of the other things that make us all unique um I'm sure sh Maria and Jill you would remember and Eric for that matter we were all essential at the same time when children were considered special needs were banished to the basement and we called that they were called the roer room kids and I've seen such a huge shift because that's not what it looks like in Bristol schools anymore so I think we've made great strides and I hope that we continue to do that um and lastly I just wanted

037to say I I hate to be overly critical or even critical but again as someone that tries to kind of stay aware of kind of what's going on here whether I watch online or on YouTube some of the some of the conversations here are making it very hard for some parents to stay vested um in in the dealings of the Board of Ed I actually had several texts um after the last meeting and I've even gotten some tonight over the fact that the first 20 minutes of this meeting were simply to discuss minutes from a special meeting um it's we as parents need to get to a place where we can start holding the board accountable for some of these meetings and some of the theatrics that we think takes place in this meeting and

038I'm speaking for myself but it's not just me that's thinking that so I just hope that going forward we figure out ways to more communally commun effectively communicate with the board or as a board so that parents it doesn't look like this and we can get more parents to become vested interested and volunteer with the bard of bed and that's really all I have to say thank you thank you next Mike erisha for the record Mike ereno 40 Palmer place here in the great City of Bristol um I just want to comment about the Ivy Drive situation that's going on I won't get into the weeds of it as I understand there's a full investigation underway I just want to take a moment to thank you publicly Madam chair for recognizing that any negative commentary

039regarding students with special needs has no place in our Public Schools no matter how beloved administrator may be there are boundaries our students our students deserve staff Administration and Board of Education Commissioners who value all students moving forward I trust that the board chair and the Acting Superintendent will seek the truth and justice will prevail I want you both to know that you both are appreciated not just by me but by plenty of people and and to Iris I want to say with my son being special needs I love your background I I'm so glad that you're sitting up there today because we need more advocates for special ed and I'm I'm really glad you're here thank you thank you okay next we have deliberated items District leadership team reports first is authorized signature change

040form Liz I'm sorry Lynn but Lynn's not here is Lynn on Zoom oh great hi Lynn Hi how are you good I don't see this anything on the screen sorry good evening everyone um the Ed own 999 authorized signature change for change form for the Child Nutrition program is a formal agreement between the Connecticut State Department of Education the US Department of Agriculture and the Bristol Public Schools Whenever there is a change in the signature we need to have the Board of Education vote to amend the agreement and make the changes to add our Acting Superintendent miss Iris white as a signatory for the bristol board of education okay well I'll make that motion that the Board of Education approves the submission of the authorized signature change form to add miss Iris white as signatory

041for the bristol board of education second second the motion has been made and seconded all in favor I I I I motion passes next we have eight .2 approval of the phase 2 final plans and project manuals for the nor Northeast Middle School project Dr de I've got that motion that's okay I was no problem oh so uh last evening at the uh Northeast Middle School building committee uh the committee did uh make a motion to send to this board uh the final approval uh to move forward uh with the uh plans as submitted uh so the specific motion is there uh that the Board of Education vote to approve the final plans and project manuals as prepared for bidding and dated April 30th 2024 and the professional cost estimate completed in accordance with level

042three ofm international standards E1 1557 standard classification of building elements and related site work uni format 2 for this project dated June 4th 2022 so moved second motions then made and seconded all in favor I opposed motion pass 8.3 approval of Board of Education Equity statement for the sustainable Connecticut Action Program thank you so we received a request from Mr David Oaks who works for the city of Bristo he's the Public Works facilities and energy manager and the City of Bristol um has is interested in participating in the sustainable program currently certified at the ser and they would like to Le to um reach the gold level certification what they to do from us they need from us is we have an equity statement that the board has seen before we've been used foring for

043a couple of years it was approved at a workshop but never formally voted on appr by the board of education so um in order for the City of Bristol to reach the certification they need a formal vote they be to show agenda minutes show approving theity stat I don't know is on you want to say um yes I I am on can you hear me yes yes hi good evening uh thank you all for allowing me to take up some of your time tonight I'll try to be brief thank you uh superintendent white for including me into your agenda tonight um so the City of Bristol has been a a charter member of the sustainable CT program since 2018 we were initially bronze we're now at Silver we're trying to close the gap to uh

044reach gold level currently only New Haven and old sber are at that level um and one of the requirements is that we um adopt an equity statement and uh through my research I was uh very happy to see that the Bristol school systems were already ahead of the curve and had an equity statement already approved um I submitted it last year and the reviewer's only comment was we only need to formally vote uh put it on an agenda get a board of education vote on that to gain credit for it and this is one thing that if we don't get um it's it's one thing that that holds us up uh the other thing is we're I'm closing the gap on the climate leadership designation um points uh total so we're very close so uh

045my simple request is I think it's more semantics than anything is uh to take a formal Board of Education vote to adopt the policy that already exists just so that um I can provide the agenda and the meeting minutes that reflect the vote was taken and the equity statement was approved thank you can I have a motion to adopt the Board of Education Equity statement for the sustainable Connecticut action program application so move motion's been made and seconded all in favor I I I opposed motion passes excellent thank you all so very much I hope in early October I will have good news that we're at the Go level certification but I hate to jinx myself at this point so uh just thank you all very much for the the time you've allotted to me

046and uh thanks for all the work you do and moving uh Bristol forward um into the future and for the betterment of the children thank you very very much have a great night enjoy the rest of your summer thank you okay next we have the water meter main replacement at at Bo building and Dr deer good evening Commissioners uh the item uh before you is the uh water meter water main replacement here at the Board of Education building uh the operations committee has met and discussed this topic on two occasions um we there's some timing issues here so I need to make some clarification uh Bristol Public Schools did make a uh proposed revision to the srr uh Grant we did hear back uh from uh the state department of Ed initially that this uh

047this specific revision was not approved uh we have not had any dialogue with the state department of Ed uh so our intent is to have some dialogue with them we've reached out to them and we're awaiting a return call uh the purpose of that dialogue would be to understand uh if if uh if with additional information uh that whether or not this would be an appropriate use of the srarp funds um and so there'll be more to follow essentially we're asking for a motion here um to approve this project um under srarp if we get the approval to use the funds by the state department of Ed the total cost of the repair would not exceed $100,000 I'll make that motion I'd like to open up let's make the motion first make the motion of

048the Board of Education vote to approve the Board of Education building water meter and water main replacement second discussion discussion we have to vote to have discuss no so um when we met at the last Finance meeting before tonight we had said we would add this to the agenda if it was approved by the State Department of Education we went through the request process and it was denied we have not received anything other than a denial I understand that you reached out and asked for more information on why it was denied but when we voted we voted only to have this on the agenda if it was approved so I don't know why we would be voting on it tonight because we were not supposed to vote on this unless we had approval from the

049State Department of Education and when I met for the agenda review this was not on there and I we never had another conversation about it coming back on there so I'm not comfortable with moving forward with something when the only information we have is that we are not allowed to use the funding for this through the chair yes um we know that we need to replace this water M now we found a source through srarp which now is rejected but we do have to go forward with this project in our next step if if reject it completely is we have to go to the board of Finance with this so I would just vote to approve this because the motion doesn't State the funding source yeah it does right no the motion I made approve

050Board of Education water meter and water main replacement that we're going for srarp is one of the details it wasn't approved though so that's the problem in that that we actually did request and it was denied through the chair the remainder of that is if the revision is not approved the repair would be funded through facilities under repairs yeah we're going to go back to board of Finance for this if this does does not go through Sr we have to get this done for the chair yes what was the original motion is it what reads at the bottom that the Board of Education vote to approve the Boe building water meter and water main replacement that is the motion okay thank you chair yeah I agree with commissioner Carlson's points it's a water main break

051which means you can't have portable water here which is a health and safety violation do we still have not a health and it's a health and safety issue not violation excuse me wrong term it's my understanding though that some um some students are present in this building for certain types of programming correct that is correct so it's not just Administration here this impacts students so either way I agree with commissioner Carlson the project has to move forward how it's funded could be debated once the project moves forward and we have funding source for it correct I me it's not optional not to fix a water M break through the chair um I I think there's just a little bit of unintended maybe ambiguity in the paragraph that precedes the motion um and it might be

052interpreted a few different ways where it reads if approved the project would be funded by SARP it's not if the motion is approved point of clarification right it's not if the motion is approved it's simp it stating that if the revision is approved for this point specifically then it would um be funded through srarp um I just want to make sure I understood that piece okay thank you so much comfortable with voting for it to be repaired I just am not comfortable with us voting to use our presser money because we haven't seek approval we haven't gain have approval on it so as long as that's clear srr is our fall back to you know our initial one but our fallback does go to facilities and and again this is going to end up sitting

053in front of the board board of Finance through and through the chair if I if I may um this is right now it's a situation that we understand is you know we can we can address now before it breaks but if it breaks it's going to get a lot more expensive I I I feel that we need you know to move forward with with this yeah for clarification we have received notices from the water department this has to be done yeah they've given us shut off notices I believe yes we have okay so the motion's been made any more discussion no okay so the motion's been made and was it seconded yes yes motion made in second all in favor I opposed motion passes thank you next we have proposed start and end times for

054the 22425 school year Dr derer you're back it's me again so uh at the uh operations committee meeting finance and operations earlier in June uh we had discussed one remedy to our busing U delays and issue that we encountered this past school year uh one proposed remedy was to make an adjustment to start and end times uh so in your packet uh in your backup you do have the proposed schedule uh the uh committee did ask that we survey our uh families to get their input regarding their preferences uh which we uh we did do uh I'm can report that and I have reported via parent Square the results of the survey as well but we have a total of 665 uh community members weighed in 65.9% of them agree with the proposed time changes

05526.9 disagree and uh 7.2% would like additional information in a public forum that breaks down to in numbers uh agreement is 438 uh votes uh 179 disagreed and 48 uh were seeking more information I'm happy to take any questions through the chair um one quick question Dr deer just wondering once the results were posted was there any additional feedback or questions that the community posed uh thank you for that question we did uh indicate that if anyone had any further concern that they could reach out to the office of superintendent and we're provided contacts information to do that we have not received any additional uh inquiries about this topic um and we did indicate that it would be come before um this board tonight thank you to the shair if I may um Dr derer

056uh if if I'm not mistaken the whole reason why uh We've uh had to consider this change is because we were faced with having to uh add additional bus routes to accommodate for for for uh you know dropping off and picking up uh children because of uh kids getting home late or getting to the school late and and things like that is is that true uh another potential resolution would be to add additional routes that would come at substantial expense to uh the taxpayer uh and uh the routes per day are approximately uh $71,500 so this would avoid this would be a cost avoidance strategy uh that would resolve the issue um we know it's going to have an impact although you know five minutes can have an impact to routines and um uh where

057families are moving students around but when we weigh that it would be between three and five bus routes uh and uh the cost associated with that uh and the impact of adjusting five minutes and we have uh high confidence based on feedback from for student that this will resolve by allowing more time between the tiers uh I think uh from my perspective the benefit to the families in Bristol will be more reliable times for pickup and drop off thank you D thank you I appreciate the work that was done through the survey to notify and get feedback from our community um and I appreciate the followup communication to let people know how the survey re results came in and the additional information about why and how it was across savings um I think the more

058information we can provide and be um willing to listen with f to families the more they can understand why we have to make these hard decisions and I know that this certainly wasn't an easy decision for anyone on this board because we all have kids and we all know how difficult it is and five minutes can really make a difference um when you're driving around multiple kids or or you have to get to work or um you know whatever so I appreciate all the effort that the district did to make sure that we really did our due diligence in a very quick amount of time because we had to have um the decision before the bus routes were scheduled for the year and we had to have all of that done by now like what

059is it by the 15th is that by the 15th so we're we're right we're right up on it so if um if we don't have any more discussion um I would ask for a motion to approve the proposed start and end times for the 2024 2025 school year so Mo second all in favor I I I motion passes thank you Dr beer thank you next we have donation of artwork to bames and the Rockwell theater uh Lynn is online for this hog again um an 8ot wide mounted photograph of bames at Night by photographer Terry Marse valued at $3,700 was donated by the Bristol arts and culture fund Bristol Historical Society to model construction tobacco construction and q&m Architects it will be mounted in the lobby of the Rockwell theater across from the clock at

060the June meeting the finance committee voted to forward the donation to the full board for a vote um I request a motion if you'd like me to read it I can for you read okay thank you I'll read the motion that the Board of Education vote to accept the mounted photograph of Baines at Night by photographer Terry Marcel donated by Bristol arts and culture fund Bristol Historical Society tomato construction tobacco construction and q&m Architects valued at $3,700 to be mounted in the lobby of the Rockwell theater across from the mounted clock so moved second um I through the chair I do have a question um I I just I want to know is there anything that is that's going to be protecting this picture from any potential vandalism um is there going to be a

061special glass or is there anything that um that they're going to be doing to make sure that it doesn't get to faed in any way once it's installed good question I don't know I'm unaware of that but I can get that information for you and let you know as um as soon as tomorrow I okay thank you you're welcome so there's a motion on the floor can I have a second I made the motion it was already seconded second motion and seconded all in favor I I motion passes Miss McCabe is on the line and would like to speak to the board great thank you Commissioners thank you uh Lynn for that um I just wanted to say thank you first to the board for uh this approval um and also um express my heartfelt

062thanks to Terry Marcel for his diligent and creative capturing of the entire renovation project um as well as um being able to uh capture the beauty of this building uh with this uh with this Photograph um to answer the commissioner's uh question at least to aart and I can find information um uh further for your uh question it is um it is already protected it's uh mounted on acrylic um so it is uh fairly easily maintained uh in terms of uh the way in which it is currently mounted uh when it is hung and also um it would be similarly um protected uh like the clock is uh I can figure out um more details if if you so choose um but I would also like to thank the Bristol Historical Society the Bristol arts

063and culture fund demato construction tobacco construction and Q q&m not only for this donation but also their tireless support for the Rockwell theater uh that supports both the students of bames and the enhancement of cult cultural events in the City of Bristol so thank you all very much uh we're very excited to have this uh beautiful piece of art uh displayed for all to see thank you principal McCay okay next we have oh we didn't vote no we did we did it said motion passes okay end of the spring season report right good evening everybody um thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to present our Spring end of season um Athletics report um I will try to keep it brief but any chance I get to brag about our Sports um I

076our girlss SE uh girls tennis team they had a 6 to 12 overall record um but we did have some B big wins over Bloomfield Lewis Mills twice plat Middletown and planville and um Adriana rier was named our All Conference honors in the singles uh with a 96 record our Bristol Eastern Esports um they had made it to playoffs in Splatoon 3 with an end-year finish of ninth in the state they also made it to playoffs in rocket League with an endof year finish of fifth in the state so if you haven't seen those Esports rooms at both of our high schools are very cool I strongly recommend going to check those out um our Bristol Eastern Esports coaches and our Bristol Central coaches had a lot of the similar feedback um we had a

077lot of dueling athletes were looking to actually get a more in-person competition for a bebc matchup next season which would be really cool uh to kind of see um their biggest accomplishment we were able to get um around 20 students involved building that sense of community and belonging which was is really what the program was all about um really good accomplishments across the board um but basically um Beyond online competition we also had a group of students who helped set up streaming opportunities so parents could get engaged and get involved online um and watch their kids kind of um participate uh coaches also presented multiple scholarship opportunities that exists within orts so we're hoping next year as the as the sport grows we can have some students who uh execute those and uh overall they

078just had a lot of fun and then finally we had a couple of Bristol Eastern student athlete College signings um so those students are listed there going for things all the way from uh baseball to uh volleyball um a lot of good accomplishments and student athletes going on to that next level of play Bristol Unified sports um this is a program that will be moving into the Athletics program next year so I just want to do a really good job of recognizing some of these athletes these are student athletes who received the Mike Savage teammate award for their dedication commitment and enthusias uh enthusiasm for Unified sports uh from Bristol Central we had Janessa Powell as the partner and we had y yat Lisa thank you Miranda as the athlete and then from Bristol Eastern

079we had Abigail Bates as the partner and Emma Davis as an athlete and that's them with some of our CIA Unified sports leaders as always if you have any questions or you need anything please feel free to reach out via email or office and our Facebook is continuing to grow um so please follow us and look for more updates you the chair yes it's over here last night the uh city council recognized the um boys and girls outdoor track and field really great really great people um super motivated it was really nice to meet a lot of them they got a little s from the city and if you you you got some pictures last night yes yeah okay I got a bunch too good please send me as many as possible I'd love to

080get them up on the Facebook just want to say it was great meeting yeah to get to go places oh yeah they're great thank we love good news and things to celebrate yeah who the chair yes some additional funding was uh allocated for expanding the Adaptive sports program this year can you speak to how those extra monies were applied to the program yeah absolutely are are you referring to the Unified sports the middle schools middle school programs uh I guess this what I'm asking where did the additional funding go to help expand the parts of the programs that we already had in place so we had two we had two programs that we took on in the spring the first was the Esports program so we developed the rooms at Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central

081which includes I'm sure as you if you've ever played video games which I have not um but to see the intricacies of these rooms is truly amazing um so we ordered the equipment the desks the chairs everything that headsets that went along with Esports as well as purchasing the programs and the games that went along with it so we were able to get that up and running at Eastern and at Central in the spring we're really looking to develop that in the fall as for some of the other funding we were able to begin Unified sports at our Middle School at chip and Hill Middle School um so that program is up and running they started practicing this year um we couldn't quite get to a tournament yet but we're looking to actually host a

082middle school unified tournament we met with the CIA um we're hosting one if not two Middle School tournaments at Chi andil middle school next year so we're really excited about that um so that's where a lot of our funding went as well for transportation for unified as well as stiens and building those those programs hopefully yeah thank you next we have the talent and management report from Dr Colton election thank you so while they're going around I'll just get started here good evening as requested by board Commissioners the following report is provided as an overview of the status of current certified vacancies and the number of interviews conducted for each respective vacancy so please notice in your board book packet or the hard copy handed out to you as of July 1st there are 27

083current certified vacancies for the 2425 school year across the district 110 interviews collectively had been conducted as of the beginning of this current week more interviews are in the process of being scheduled and for some of these positions finalist candidates were already in the process of being interviewed at the superintendent's office just not finalized so they're still included as part of that count for you we're certainly excited to welcome our new teachers and our new um Bristol team members to our community Commissioners had also asked for demographic breakdown of separating employees as you'll see in the monthly consent agenda leading into the end of the school year over time there have been 16 resignations and 13 retirements of certified staff that became effective during the month during this the month of June of 2024 the

084demographics for which are one certified staff member in a district-wide position who identifies as black all other 28 retirements and resignations across building locations were certified staff who identify as white an overview of the hiring and onboarding process and process for communicating vacancies to parents was also requested in your packet you'll find a copy of the protocol that's used to guide our hiring process for Bristol Public Schools over the past year we've worked with administrators feedback with our internal technical expertise and knowledge of hiring standards and requirements to streamline and calibrate our practices while ensuring that we're meeting credentialing and all other employment requirements we've set up internal mechanisms for administrators to engage in selection and hiring in a way that upholds our pledge to keeping Equity at the Forefront of our decision-making honors the

085sensitivity and confidentiality of candidates seeking to join our um join us or move within our organization and ensured solid recordkeeping and Communications throughout the process the details can be found in your packet by accessing the hiring protocol that's available to you for which you also have a hard copy and that hard copy handout as you'll notice the process is outlined for administrators across the school district it provides links to the information and documents that are to be accessed during the selection process within that document there are links to nearly all necessary items that are to be accessed and utilized through the selection process hiring manager follows the guidance and clicks on the candidate rating form which you'll see in your material it then provides an interview committee with the tools that they'll need to use

086during the selection process links to questions being asked of candidates the scoring of those candidates answers a copy of job description for committee members to reference candidates application packets confidentiality agreement to be signed noting confidentiality and commitment to equity-driven decision making making are all links that are available within that document this is also the materials for an administrator to move candidates forward through the hiring process we're working currently on the onboarding process being revised as we continue to learn and grow and make adjustments to better meet the needs of our District staff and to support our goals including increasing educators of diversity I'll be reviewing updates of our onboarding process with administrators at our upcoming admin Retreat next week and seeking more feedback from them of course as we make the process even more effective

087and efficient while also aiming to make it more beneficial for all of our constituents the objective is to ensure calibrated and assured experiences as we welcome and acclimate new members to the Bristol team across the district lastly with regard to communication to families when certified positions are vacant last fall all District administrators were provided with a template letter that you have in your packet the template letter is to be customized by the building administrators to fit the specific building administrators or Department administrators to fit the specific circumstances and a sample letter is in your packet for you titled letter to parents Guardians regarding certified staff vacancies I'd be glad to answer any questions that you might have at this time or to walk through any of the details in more uh in more detail with

088any of the commissioners at a later date if chosen I'm happy to take questions if you have through the chair oh and stario we did you go you go yes please you're welcome through the chair um one question that I had um are there any positions um where we haven't gotten a lot of applicants um or you know just kind of thinking about recruitment efforts and stuff like that it's wondering if there's it absolutely varies some positions there are an abundance of applicants and other positions um not as many it's not as fruitful um so it really depends upon what the position is the number of candidates in the in the area in the state of Connecticut with the proper certification if we're talking about certified in particular yeah but it absolutely varies there tend

089to be pockets of positions that are more plentiful typically your positions such as Elementary education for more applicants English um Humanities then there are special education Specialties sciences and Mathematics those are World Language um each year the department of connectic uh Connecticut state department of education issues a shortage area list um of identified areas of teacher shortage we make knowledge of that we understand what that is at the start of the school year I think in the past I may have shared it actually with the board Commissioners but can do that again in the upcoming school year so you know where those areas are going to be more of a struggle to fill thank you you're welcome through the chair um thank you very much for um the data that you've presented um question about

090the information uh resignations retirements you shared some data points is that information um I I see what we have in our packet or at least what you provided here is that data also um part of something that you could share with us I just didn't see it in this package the resignation and the number of resignations are on each monthly consent agenda so they're identified by the position the name and building location so the number that I provided you with is effective as of June 2024 how many resignations or retirements were effective as of the month of June others had been affected throughout the course of the school year but you're provided with that every month you have the list of each person under the category of retirement or resignation Goa no thank you I

091appreciate that I I wasn't sure if the data points that you provided just today um in your presentation to us was part of something in this package but no you're saying that we're because we get it monthly that we're able to refer back to that um what I presented to you is in the package you just held out so those are the current vacancies for the 2425 school year as of the start of July those are the um positions that we still need to hire for the coming school year right right I'm sorry if I I probably am not um communicating myself very well my points you had given um some data 17 yeah I think resignations and retirement I was trying to follow you here and I didn't know if it was in here

092if I was missing it yeah that's no so beginning uh all of yes all of those resignations and retirements have been provided over the course of the school year to com to give you a summary of that effective in the month of June of 2024 there were 16 resignations and 13 retirements that you might have seen on board agendas earlier in the school year not effective until the end of the school year and of those 28 of those individuals identify as white one of those individuals identifies as black and that was for the month of jun and that position um of the one individual is a districtwide position not a building located position gotcha thank you and the data that you provided us tonight was for the month of June effective the month of June

093effective the month of June right gotcha okay I'm I'm sorry I just wasn't sure if there was a that data somewhere in here that I was missing I was trying to recollect what you had said um do we have uh the aggregate on hand of resignations and retirements for the year and I could I don't have it in front of me I'll just go through the board agenda do and add up how many there were each month okay and do you think that can also be disaggregated um by the sort the demographic information is that something you have that's readily available if we're looking at a culmination of like culmination of retirements and resignations over the course of the Year yes um we would definitely be able to pull the demographics I would just need

094to know if you wanted by person by month by over the course of the year X amount of people people who identify as white have resigned x amount of certified staff who identify as Hispanic or Latino I just need to know how you like that broken down and we have that okay I can I can look at that thank you um what information are we submitting to the State Department of Education by way of resignations or so in the Strategic School profile we will be submitting and I don't want to misspeak on the exact um information that needs to be provided so there is a report that will be given um and I believe that needs to be following the November board meeting so likely for us then it would be in December that information

095would be presented um to yourselves as well as being reported to the state okay and that's is that the statutory correct um obligation and for the exit interviews what are we doing with that information um internally and then what are we doing with that information in alignment with our statutory obligations so internally we have a an exit survey and so individuals are given an opportunity to give their feedback through an exit survey I believe the policy committee is probably well knowledgeable about the process um that information is a public accessible information and so we forewarn people as they're um completing that document obviously that whatever they choose to provide is being elected voluntarily the process for us is that when somebody indicates to us that they'll be resigning or retiring we send them an invitation

096to complete the exit interview as a survey and or have a discussion if they would like to or prefer to so the questions asked in that survey as we have it set right now are the um required questions so that we're meaning our state requirements and obligations and if individuals would like a followup for any further dialogue they're asked to just indicate that as such on their survey and then we follow up with them to to speak with them and more personably have we looked at the data around those who are completing it are we are do we feel like we're getting um a pretty good response um I understand that they might be apprehensive to complete the the exen interview I I think I would be better versed to let you know after I

097take another another close look to know like the ratio of how many people have left and elected to complete and divide that by we do give the opportunity to anybody who's parting uh from Bristol Public Schools regardless of the um position or the reason for departure so I'd want to make sure that I'm clear on what that information is okay we have 100 teachers who leave I want to make sure I'm giving you the numbers of out of a 100 teachers how many people that would be great yeah that's fair of course thank you you're welcome that's all I have thank you through the chair I have one other follow-up question that came to me did anyone else have question second questions I was curious if it would be possible to get data around how

098long the vacant positions have been vacant these current or typically um what a these that we're Lifan is of a position um the ones that we have the print out of today I was just curious how long they've been vacant I can pull that together for you could also access it on the website each of the jobs as they're posted the date that they're posted or um noted on the job post okay and that's available obviously to the public we going to make it available to the public we're g to have applicants so each of those are listed on our public facing website okay thank you you're welcome I have one question I'm looking at the and the last column says number of interviews conducted and so this is telling me that these positions are

099still open and and these are the number of thus far thus far and so when I go down to Southside school grade four and five it says 17 and 17 there's been 17 interviews for each of those positions so at times there are 17 candidates interviewing for multiple positions but they're being considered if they've applied for both so might be duplicate but that's how many candidates have applied for that position to be considered for that position okay so this is number of I shouldn't say applied applied and are have been interviewed and have been have been interviewed yes this this does not um reflect what the number of applicants has been you've you've asked me to identify how many have been interviewed right and so again some of these positions have already had additional interviews

100since this report was compiled for you and some may be dup Ates so the 17 that were interviewed at salside school for grade four by way of certification can also be they also applied for grade five and were interviewed with that grade four and grade five consideration both of those grade bands they were interviewing for both and they were those separate interviews grade four and grade five I don't know that off the top of my head if they were different times gotcha thank you you're welcome it seems like there's a lot of interviews going on that this is a busy time and with any administrator that's what they're going to tell you they're doing through the summer right right a large part of what they're doing thank you I I I know how taxing it

101can be to be in those interviews and it being your world for multiple days so thank you that's a lot thank you if anyone else has questions okay okay thank you you're welcome next we have special services Report with Amy Martino hi Amy thank you good evening um I do want to apologize to the finance committee because they just heard July numbers earlier tonight so not to confuse you but for tonight I'll be talking about June so as of June 1st 2024 1,845 of the 8,140 enrolled Bristol students were identified as requiring special education programming this enrollment reflects 22 2.67% of the total BPS student population as of June 1st 120 students with disabilities required out of District placements at private special education programs there were 80 8 78 students requiring special education programs at

102um other public outof district schools that would be including the magnet schools during the month of May 2024 4% of the newly registered students were identified as students requiring special education programming at the time of registration one newly enrolled student during the month of May received their program in and outof District education program during the month of May there were 44 211 and 13911 calls are there any questions about the June report through the chair yes I appreciate that every month you bring these numbers and um certainly it's really important information if there was any information that you would want to provide the board outside of this is there any is there any other information much to the work that Dr culen does in in in recruitment until you actually see those numbers you don't

103really know all the work that is going on behind the scenes and I wonder if the same might be for what you're doing in special education is there any would might we be able to consider expanding some of this information to really show the work that's happening with special services um I would say as the Director of special services I would be delighted to share a number of different things that we do across the year um I know that the numbers really are important as we think about budgetary items however you know there are a number of curric enhancements we've made program enhancements if there are P specific questions you would like me to talk about please let me know because you know I could go on forever um because it's an area of passion

104for me I don't know how long you have nobody wants to hear me shoot off a barrage of questions but I just wonder that if in the future we might be able to consider ways of further highlighting the great work that's being done um in special services like we're starting to do more with some of the other areas um to really show the community and those who attend the meetings um I hate to say especially in budget times like the impact of where that that that investment I think there was something that came out recently um that showed how much of um Bristol's Financial contributions goes to education and I think that the more we're able to show something really tangible even anecdotally like student achievements and celebrations it it hopefully Comforts um people in

105the community that this money is going to the most important thing in our community which is our children sure I'd be more than happy to do so for the next meeting and then if there's specific areas you want me to focus on please let me know because I don't want to take the whole night any other further questions all right thank you next we have curriculum revision K12 library media curriculum second reading um oh there we go good evening Commissioners and um superintendent white and Dr deer I'm here to present the Cade through 12 Library curriculum revisions for tonight uh the last time it was revised was in 20120 the main additions that we added were learning targets and success criteria for students all K12 library media curriculum are centered around these four modules so

106module one is the digital digital citizenship module two two is information and media literacy module three is growth inquiry and curiosity and module four is presentation of information and students are working throughout their their um School career to continue to build their um understanding around these areas as they move through the grades and if you've got any questions I'm happy to answer them okay with no questions can I have a motion to approve the K12 library media curriculum revision so move all in favor I I thank you thank you okay next we have Dr reenberg for one two three four five seven going out with a bang going sneakers okay so the first is botney curriculum revision second reading so botney was originally written and brought to the board um I want to say 2019

107or 2020 I didn't write it down and this was really just a a template change this moved into our new uh board approved template and our teachers spent a good deal of time really converting our learning targets and adding in success criteria there four units of study introduction to botney uh pollination and growth so understanding growth and development of plants the wide world of plants looking at the the vast diversity of plants that exist in the world and then how plants and man have acted together whether we're eating growing farming all of those good things um this is an elective course it is for a half of a credit it's offered in both of our high schools and both of our high schools have a greenhouse that can be utilized with this course and I

108will take any questions or a motion my only question is can we take the class I mean I don't know how that works you can work work with Mr Wier and Mr Higgins and I'm sure that they can make a plan for you okay does anyone have any questions yeah I did have one other question you wna take yeah through the chair yeah I do um I I do actually I could use it um does the do the students um do any like field work like on like plant identification and things like that like you know like like in on school grounds for inance they're very active they there are um both of the the high schools have Courtyards with active Gardens and within those Gardens they utilize those they also utilize the the surrounding

109um fields and Forest in order to touch and feel you know things not like poison I may but uh yes yeah thank you uh okay so without any more questions can I have a motion to approve the botney curriculum revision motion second moved in second all in favor I I motion passes next communication technology curriculum revision second reading so this is now this curriculum revision was way overdue um this is an elective course it is offered in both of our high schools it is for the it falls under the marketing I'm sorry the business and Communications concentration area in both marketing and digital communication so it falls within two Pathways within that concentration area that's a little confusing um really this course is about building the fundamentals of communication Technologies which are really understanding some

110of those audio and visual components to communicating a message so you can see the first unit are those fun fundamentals second unit is Acoustics so really thinking about sound and how you're making certain sounds portray what you're you're looking for in your communication graphic Technologies um and then the last is multimedia so building some some video that pull all of those pieces together and with that questions or motion to approve any questions okay can I have a motion to approve the communication technology curriculum revision so moov second made in second all in favor I motion passed next the cad and solid modeling curriculum revision second reading yes so computer AED design and solid modeling is um a revision but part of this revision was to build the course so that it aligned to the manufacturing

111World um CAD is the way in which we design parts and we imagine how parts fit together and if and determine if parts are going to work in the way that we want together um so what students do within this course is that they learn the fusion 360 platform which is a a cad system and they understand that system through the lens of manufacturing and we do start with a parts like thinking part- like thinking so I know that sounds very weird um for somebody who may not be in manufacturing and then the second part the second unit is really understanding how manufacturing works as a whole and how all of the systems come together so this care ulum revision kept all of the major components of understanding CAD systems but put the lens of

112manufacturing on it so that it could improve the tightness of our manufacturing and architecture uh in our manufacturing pathway as well as continued to support the architecture and construction pathway it is a half credit course um there are no articulations with any Universities with this course at this time and with that any questions or a motion to approve put a motion to approve the revision for the C and solid modeling curriculum nice second I actually took it at uh at Central when it was first I'm dating myself but I remember taking CAD when it was first introduced to Central and I actually used it to this day and it was a great course so it's definitely a value ad for the students through the chair yeah over there being being in manufacturing being in um

113manufacturing and additive uh manufacturing uh lasers it's there's such a demand out there right now for this type of thing um so I think this is a great program just as just as a on when my two sents I don't know if I'm out of sequence for the for a question and I know you mentioned that currently there's no there's no um collaborations or Partnerships with with colle we have a gazillion partnership collaborations within industry um I think our favorite partnership is De Cru manufacturing um but our work with ready C has has about 20 students placed within the manufacturing field this summer so all in paid internships which are funded through SRP y okay great thank you so the motion has been made in seconded all in favor I I motion passed next child

114and family community curriculum revision so oftentimes we do curriculum revisions when we know we have new staff teaching it gets our staff members together to plan and build their capacity along that new new content area for them um we have new to Bristol Central and new to Bristol Eastern two teachers that hadn't taught this previously and so part of their calibration and part of their development as staff members was to take a curriculum that had been written um in the in the mid 2000s and revise it in an updated form and get them into standards that were really relev to the topics um so child family and Community is part of our education pathway it supports both Elementary and secondary education pathway so any student that um is interested in education has access to this

115this is typically a preliminary course it is a half a credit and it is offered in both buildings um the very favorite part from on the students perspective is we do um we have robotic babies that is also the least favorite part of all administrators in all of those buildings um but it it is a wonderful learning experience for our students and they come back um with a new appreciation for what it what it means to be a parent and um I I I do think that the babies bring in this whole they they perpetuate the growth in this program there's a lot of kids that want to participate in it once they see the babies moving throughout the buildings so with that I'll take questions or a motion to approve I'll make a motion

116to approve the curriculum revision for child family and Community curriculum second motion's been made and seconded all in favor I I I motion passes next we have the ECE Environmental science curriculum revision second reading oh I was skipping on my own list okay ECE environmental science so all of our ECE courses are Yukon courses um and those those Yukon courses only require that our staff get a syllabus approved by Yukon um and for many years we only brought the syllabus to the board and we really wanted to deepen the understanding of what was taught across the two buildings so we now took that syllabus and the content that was on that syllabus and made it more robust by building out learning targets and success criteria it also clarifies content and depth of content across the

117two buildings um students that take this class get one science credit for Bristol Public Schools but they get three Yukon credits as a result um there are six units of instruction and there very common actually these mimic some of our other environmental topics um so you can see the state of Earth the living world land land use energy resources land and Global change um and that's pretty much it um I'll take a motion or a question I'll put a motion to approve the ECE environmental science curriculum motion's been made and seconded all in favor I I I motion passes oceanography curriculum revision second reading Dr re so oceanography is in that exact same boat as botney they actually came to the board at the same time in in 2020 2019 or 2020 um this was

118just an up update to the template and added the success criteria so the same units of study exists the same general objectives exist the the depth really came into identifying success criteria and building some more common lab experiences for students it is a half credit elective it's operated in both buildings um and uh staff have the ability to run fish tanks and all sorts of things out of their classrooms as a result of this course with that I will take a motion or any questions uh through the chair yeah so um so the students get to um actually uh um work with with the saltwater re systems and things like that so um our teachers that run oceanography partner with I want to say it's Yukon Avery Point and our kids have gone out on

119on boats I believe the the Bristol Eastern group went out twice this year they went to the shore they they had field trips covered to it and did live ocean research it's part of part of the course and they actually have fish tanks in the class there are fish tanks yes and um the teachers determine the problem with oceanography is salt saltwater tanks do take a considerable amount of work in calibration and with Summers it gets a little funky um they do a lot of freshwater tanks so the The Saltwater just becomes I used I did reef tank so yeah yeah Summer's not kind we' we we've offered them the opportunities to set them up but there there are so many challenge challenges with that soor I'll make a motion to approve the curricular revision

120or oceanography motion's been made in second all in favor I motion passes next website design this is the final one this is it alphabetically it's last breion second reading so website design had not been revised since I think 2004 which is really ironic because 2004 offered an entirely different world of websites than what we see now so our our teachers from both buildings came together and they really dug into the topics that were within the curriculum and they updated it to um you know 2024 standards so we added some standards that are aligned to Advan CTE the major topics of the curriculum remained intact so you'll see the basics of web design web design elements HTML and CSS um this is a half credit course this is a fairly popular course so there are a

121number of sections that happen across both buildings um and it is part of two of our pathways marketing and digital Communications and with that I will take any questions or motions I'll make a motion to approve the website design curriculum revision motion's been made in second all in favor I I I motion passes thank you thank you good night through the chair okay next new bu the chair I'm sorry just before before we move on uh if if if it please you okay yeah I would be remiss if I didn't sit here and not recognize the Fantastic work that Dr wenberg has brought to this District during her tenure here uh I started on the board I've always been at student achievement um on that committee since uh I've been appointed to the board and

122subsequently reelected twice um the uh the amount of change and um progress you've broughten to that you have brought to the district in the science and math curricular areas have not been lost on me for sure and I'm sure along with my colleagues the growth and development of our career Pathways um the Partnerships with our communities uh the opportunities and the um discipline Excellence you brought here um I just I um want to recognize that I um am with mixed emotion having to vote on your resignation this evening but I am also extremely grateful for the opportunities and um you will be um bringing somewhere else uh in your next adventure so I just want to personally thank you and the work that you've done for the district it was uh was a great was

123great ride thank you thank you okay next on the agenda we have new business yes I have new business to bring up um a motion we in for new business bring up a donation for a press box for Bristol Central High School do you want to add that to the agenda add that to the agenda add that to the agenda okay pardon me I threw the chair could you repeat that a what box um the Press Box for the 50 Press Box for Bristol high schools Fields donation I'm not making the motion yet this is just to add it to new business to okay we get a vote to add it to business yes okay so somebody second that second sorry remember we talked about it so the motion has been made in second to

124add to new business to the agenda a $50,000 donation I'll I'll take care of that okay in the actual motion okay so all in favor I hi hi hi okay now I have the motion for you make a motion that board of education approves a $50,000 donation for construction of a Press Box the athletic fields at Bristol Central High School 480 wil Street second a second oh now we can discuss and I I'll I'll just explain this is an anonymous donation um so I don't know who's coming from but uh again this will set us up that we can look at the costs of the Press Box and possibly add it all you know pending sufficient funding Dr de you can probably add to this or um I I would simply add that it's a

125donor that wishes to remain anonymous at this time the $50,000 would not cover the entire cost of a press box so this would be starting point um it would allow us to engage the service of an engineer in order to understand what those costs would be um and will allow us to um pursue whatever options are available to us okay I just ask a procedural question so um we had finance committee at six o'clock um this was on the agenda but there was no action taken in finance so I was just curious why it got moved to new business was there a delay in no didn't want the delay timing we approved it oh it was approved yes I'm sorry that's why I'm asking for the clarification thank you appreciate the clarification yeah so the

126motion has been made and seconded if there are no more questions or comments uh we will move to vote all in favor I I any opposed motion passes okay next we have building reports with Peter Fusco good evening uh I'd like to start off with the chippens Hill Middle School underground storage tank we are currently working through the punch list moving on the bames remediation is complete the industrial hygienist took samples and did his visual inspection this afternoon and once the results come back clean the containment can come down we are awaiting preliminary restoration options that will be shared with the building committee also moving on to the new nems the building committee met last night we have a pre-bid conformance review scheduled for July 18th moving forward to the srr all of the projects

127are currently moving along and there are no issues to report at this time next Edgewood um renovation and culinary arts I'll bundle them together because we received the approval letter from the state for both the Edgewood renovation project and the High School culinary arts projects and we are starting to work through the documents now that we have received now that we we' received the formal approval last uh we have the athletic fields and site improvements I know this has been on the um the reports month after month I'd like to bring us up to speed as to where we are right now first I'd like to start with what we've done to completion so the following projects under this grant that are complete are milling and resurfacing and repaving the existing black top play areas

128at Southside school cracked ceiling on black top play areas at Edgewood Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern High Schools shop put enhancements dugouts at Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern With the Wind screens batting cages at Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern the foll projects that this grant are currently we have in process are crack ceiling the black top play areas at Stafford and IV Drive will be next uh both of these schools we anticipate to be completed by end of summer and last uh we hired an engineer to provide us a scope of work for track repairs at Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central High Schools the identified repairs have been put out to bid two times um and we received no qualified biders through the procurement office so we are currently working directly with our purchasing agent

129and soliciting independent bids from contractors to see if we can get this work done that concludes my report if you have any questions at this time feel free to ask through the chair if I may uh for the uh for the uh for the tracks the repairs that are required is it just um uh cracks from settling from you know uh age uh wearen air that kind of stuff oh we're seeing some uh um deterioration of some of the rubber uh membrane in spots um and that could be attributed to some wear and tear uh we also saw U some drain um sections that uh they're they're cast material and some of them have uh have broken so uh an engineer had done a study and provided a scope of work and that's the scope

130of work we're using to bring in bitters to hopefully get this work completed any other questions okay thank you thank you uh next we have the ason reports are there any Commissioners who would like to share information I can start on this side I have nothing at this time thank you have n we do not have a report thank you go over well we're gonna go this way I know you have one nothing yeah the floor is yours I'll be quick um from I heard that um I still have lots of love for you um at Bristol Eastern um principal shares that on June 18th Bristol Eastern held an outdoor graduation ceremony uh which 270 graduates received their diplomas in front of their friends and family um currently Bristol Eastern is housing the Bristol Parks

132for the first three weeks of the program the social worker U Miss smth will be an attendance supporting kids in their application of our sore behaviors and increasing their ability to manage their emotions sidebar when my 8-year-old um went for the first day and he held on to me with a death grip and wouldn't leave me um like literally he would not leave me and Mrs Smith was so amazing um with trying to get him to come in but ultimately it was um Mrs Hernandez bribe of chits that got him in and I thank her so every morning now he's greeted by sheits but I'm not mad about it um but it's been a really great program sidebar um additionally through a partnership with our 21st century Grant we along with Ivy and Hubble are

133offering instrumental enrichment tutoring we had about eight kids all morning coming in for their weekly lessons it is outstanding to see their the children grow as readers writers mathematicians and musicians we are in the process of bringing our hiring to a close by onboarding a new grade five four and three teacher and now are fully staffed with great new and energetic candidates Dr culin credit to the great work that's happening there um lastly on Tuesday July 23rd we will be having our summer family Barbecue our friends from BPD will be in attendance and this is a free Event open to all of our Southside school families this is a great opportunity for our kids staff and families to connect Midsummer for a fun afternoon together and um Dr Hubert attached a few pictures which you
