[music] So we are honored [music] to be hosting a day on not a day off at Clawson public schools. It's our first uh opportunity to host [music] it. A day on not a day off is in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. And so what we do for the day is we serve and we serve in a number of ways from blanket making to um making cards for for our service members and first responders. [music] Uh there's art projects for our kiddos, of course, breakfast, which they love, donuts, especially [music] a ton of donations in our gym that will go out all over Southeast Michigan that we will sort and organize. And it's just, as I said, an opportunity for us to serve [music] our community. >> To us, this day is just about community
and coming together. [music] Uh three full districts coming together and community members. Um, I had the pleasure today of loading cars to go out to other sites and donate um, things that [music] were donated from diapers to toys to clothes knowing that the community extends further than our school district. And I think it's a really unique [music] setup to have three districts do that together and I'm proud to be a part of that. >> I'm participating in Martin [music] Luther King Jr. yesterday and I made blankets for the homeless and colored cards [music] for the homeless and made snowflakes. The things I did today was blanket making. What else? Oh yeah, cards. We are making [music] an art project for the welcome in homeless shelter in Royal Oak. We partnered with the city of Royal
Oak and >> [music] >> um the Royal Oak Civic Center to supply materials. Uh basically patrons today decorated snowflakes and popsicle sticks with positive words and mantras. Um my high [music] school art students here at Clson High School will be painting some large canvases uh utilizing a Martin Luther King quote and we'll be installing those on the canvases and then putting that up as an installation at the welcome in center to basically [music] add some color um and some uplifting vibes to their daily time there. Uh this day is so important for everyone [music] here. It's such a great partnership with the city of Berkeley and Royal Oak as well, but it allows the community to come together and just spend the morning doing acts of service, which is what Martin Luther King was about.
Today's a great day. We've had many, many people across from multiple communities, Berkeley, Royal Oak, Clawson, and even beyond coming together to honor Dr. King. And uh we started off with a freedom walk this morning walking through the neighborhood uh showing respect for Dr. King and what today is all about. and we had a poster board sharing the messages and the values that Dr. King uh promoted and lived out that we are [music] also supporting here today. And uh it's been it's been a lot of fun. It's it's it's been our ninth year uh and and we're looking forward to doing it every year in the future too as well. I think it's [music] a huge benefit. Um we talk about celebrating uh Dr. King and some people do that with a day off. Uh
some people [music] do that with school and teaching lessons about him. Um, but I think this is a nice mix of the two where we can come together uh and honor the true spirit of what Dr. King embodied um and get all [music] of our communities together. So again, anytime you can bring Royal Oak Berkeley and Clawson together [music] for the same cause as opposed to competing in robotics or sports or debate, I think it's a really great opportunity and a great event.
