thank you so much so informative lots of really great things happening okay then we will move to the superintendent's report superintendent Leo I'll turn the floor to you perfect thank you um just a reminder that next week we have no classes Wednesday through Friday for Thanksgiving break so that's November 22nd through 24th we will be uh off school I want to give a little summary of last Friday's professional learning day this past Friday Els staff participated in their second of five professional learning Fridays we offered 17 different sessions for the the morning learning sessions all District staff were involved in morning sessions that centered around one or more of our district goals that are aligned with our mission statement previously um stated this evening we had 107 individuals participate in learning around Mental Health social
emotional learning and wellness 168 individuals participating in learning around teaching and learning and 114 individuals participated in learning around diversity inclusion belonging and social justice and many of our sessions intersect two or more of these District Focus areas so that's how they're kind of categorize but I do want to point out that many of them do intersect and overlap into multiple Focus areas a few highlights I wanted to share and I thought I'd share about three but I think I have about nine um 40 of our staff members learned about deescalation strategies with secure education Consultants 23 staff members completed their second and final session of AED CPR training and are now certified um to perform AED dcpr uh 21 staff members learned about the neurosequential model of Education with mental health specialist 17 staff
members participated in K12 Champs training which is classroom PBIS training 30 staff members learned strategies to better support students with autism spectrum disorder 20 staff members learned about using restorative practices in the classroom 23 staff members participated in joy as resistance in establishing healthy boundaries with the Justice leaders collaborative 39 staff members joined myself and Mr Mitchum on a district and Community Bus tour guided bus tour so folks could um see and learn about our buildings and our school neighborhoods and community and 18 staff members learned from from four of our local Interfaith clergy on understanding the elps religious and cultural calendar in the afternoon Elementary staff continued their work on PBIS and second step integration as building teams and our secondary staff members met with their self- selected building work groups and reported out
their progress and plans to their full staff at the end of the session uh we look forward to our next professional learning Friday but it's not until February 16th so very successful Friday and it's also coming to the time of the year where I like to um get in front of uh sharing about how snow day decisions are made and communicated okay get in front of it not before it's too late as we enter snow day season I'd like to share some information about how the decision of whether or not to cancel school is made and how a school closing will be communicated number one whether many weather factors are considered when determining whether or not to cancel school such as the amount of snow snow both current and predicted timing of the snow temperature
and wind chill sustained wind chills of -20 degrees or lower will result in school closing or delay Road and sidewalk conditions including conditions for buses and our young drivers and other factors such as blowing and drifting ice or freezing rain visibility power outages I do a road check throughout the district beginning around 4:15 a.m. not daily but on days that are question able and communicate with other local superintendents and often the city of East Lancing and or East Lancing police department number two when possible we'll make the call the night before in order to give families as much time as possible to prepare if a decision to close schools is made the night before it will be communicated no later than 10 p.m. if the decision to close schools is made in the morning we
do our best to communicate by 5:30 a.m. but we'll communicate no later by then six number three if a decision is made to close school the closing is communicated to staff and families via the following methods rooc call to staff and families so please make sure your phone numbers are current in power school um we also now have the text option so that can also be uh turned on by each individual um who's in power school we posted on our elps Facebook page our elps website main page I post on Twitter it's a good way for me to get followers because you'll hear it first or see it first on Twitter every year I say that and I make sure we post it first there so you'll be the first to know if you follow
me um local news media WX wlns fox47 wkr and wfmk information about other events such as practices games concerts Etc will be made later in the morning and communicated through coaches advisors and the district website so that's all my information around um How uh no days are determined and communicated and then I just wanted to share our next Board of Education meeting uh as Jennifer mentioned will be after Thanksgiving break on November 27th thank you wonderful thank you so much superintendent Leo are there questions for the superintendent um about the superintendent's report from board members I just want I just want to say thank you for kind of spelling out all the work that happened at the last professional learning day and I know you did that for the first one too or version of
that and I think it's really neat to demystify the the things that are happening on those dates because you know I've been curious at times and I think it's it's great to know that that's what's happening and all the learning that was happening is really positive stuff for the district yeah thanks you know and I would say I appreciate that feedback and we really have worked hard to align our offerings with one or more of our mission statements and kind of what we call our buckets around seal Wellness mental health teaching and learning and then diversity Equity inclusion belonging and social justice so um and if it kind of covers or you know uh if these sessions lead into all three that's even better other questions or comments well I have one um bone of
contention which is that we are entering the season of snow days I would hope that we are not entering maybe a pre- entering but I'm not ready to admit that any kind of snow days or snow of any kind is coming so please join me in my delusion I hope I'm early but just in case I appreciate that um and then one pro um I don't like family tip is these go out on eblast tomorrow right updates so join me in printing this out and putting it in a handy place so on those mornings you can know was it 5:30 was it 600 am I going to know the night before is it 10: 5 yeah all of those handy tips will be useful um for those of us who have kiddos to manage um
great well then we will move on to public comment um before I read the little public comment statement I'll just say um for anyone who is new or doesn't um anyway we have blue forms in the little tray in the back so if you are interested in making public comment which we invite all of you to do um you can just fill out the blue form and get it to miss H for over here sitting by the computer she will get it to me and we'll make sure that we get to your comment so I'm telling you that so you can make your Mad Dash all of you not all at once to get the blue form okay with that I will read our public comment statement um this is your opportunity to address the
board speakers are to confine their remarks to five minutes if a speaker requires more than five minutes after all other persons who have requested to speak during this part of the meeting have spoken that speaker will be allowed additional time the superintendent or other District staff may comment to clear up or avoid significant Mis understandings okay with that do we have any forms we have no forms okay I've given you fair warning I'm closing public comment we're going to move to the first of two really exciting presentations I'm um I've been looking forward to both of these uh since we put the agenda together so we'll start with the Ingam County Health Department school-based Health Clinic yes if I can invite you to come forward and to the podium that's the best viewing space for
those who are live streaming okay for the yes okay good evening everyone and thank you members of the Board of Education uh superintendent Leo members of the uh Regional District team and residents and students thank you so much for having us my name is Chris Drake and I'm the executive director of Ingam community Health Centers which is affiliated with Ingam County Health Department and I'm accompanied by Nancy jaara who is the operations manager for our school-based health program in the audience is Robin Turner who is our consultant and she does a fabulous job and I do want to take this opportunity to recognize two members from the community advisory committee uh first is Brandy Boke who is sitting beside Robin and also Mr Xander bows wonderful so in terms of mechanics what we're going to
do is Nancy is going to walk you through a wonderful presentation and then after that we will field any questions that you may have about where we're going how we're going to get there all that exciting stuff sounds good wonderful thank you so much without further Ado Nancy I'm on up thank you so I'm so happy to see all of you here I just want to let you know that um the Ingam Community Ingam community health centers collaborating with the East Lancing Public Schools is just like an amazing amazing um um Amazing Adventure that I look so forward to uh to doing and to working with this environment it's really important I think to have the school-based health centers because we are bringing healthc care directly into to your schools giving you easy access for
your kids so that they don't have to miss a lot of school time they can be seen right here during the day and get great quality care and if they're not missing school time that means they're spending their time in the classroom where they should be so um just uh this initiative I think will again just bring not only physical health but mental health as we will talk about that a little bit later too um so just an over overview of the Child and Adolescent Health Center this is a division of the mdhhs and the program is again to provide services to students um within the school again you're going to have high quality you're going to get great quality Care the providers that we have are amazing in all of our sites um as
well as all of the staff the nursing staff the Mas so wonderful people to work with we will provide you with your primary care preventative care services and early intervention health care services so and I'm not just I'm not going to just read through this so feel free to read along but I'm just kind of talking um in our health centers you can get immunizations um medications you can get um pretty much it's just like a it's a regular doctor's office it's just located right here in your school so the um Advantage is you know we are working with not not only the school but with the parents and the students to um all come together to make sure to keep the kids healthy and we are providing services to kids who are aged 4
to 21 so even though it's housed in the East Lancing High School ideally any of your you know student body whether they're in red cedar or at the junior high school will be able to access our services and that's what we're here for is to provide services to um people in your school community and in addition do we do have in our school-based health center we also have a school linked Health Center which is Willow Community Health Center and we're going to talk about that a little bit later we're going to move on to the um overview of our Ingam community health centers so the Ingam community health centers were federally federally qualified Health Centers we have 12 Health Centers throughout the community I don't know if you've heard of like Forest um Cedar peeds
Women's Health uh Birch Allen New Hope um and of course Willow Eastern and seon so we are already in the community we're already providing quality care and we're you know just really happy to expand it to East Lancing so right now again I have three um behavioral health consultants who sit in Lancing School District so they're at Everett Patton Gill and Gardner in addition I have two um Health Centers so two school-based Health Centers at Eastern and sexon health high schools so those health centers are hous in those high schools and we have our school link site which is the willow Community Health Center so your site would be similar to um Eastern and sexon so I've been meeting with the the school and admin team with parents uh students and all of the families
and really collaborating and coming up with a lot of ideas from all of you listening to all of all of what you've had to say and just to let you know that again that we are all working to provide the comprehensive Medical Services to you guys again Primary Care Behavioral Health confidential Services we're going to talk about that in a moment and referral for plan Family Planning we'll also mention that in a second and again you want to make sure that your kids just have consistent access to care so we are here right in your school we're going to be here year round providing the services you need to get our services you do have to have consent that requires parent or Guardian consent for services so um we will send parents Guardians paperwork it
has to be completed before we've seen before we can see the child and there's really the no exception to that except for a kid receiving confidential Services if it's an emergency so a kid comes down oh my God I punched the wall and really hurt my hand um you know something like that that that's an emergency and if we don't have anything on on file right away the provider is still going to take a look at them the thing is we want to keep your kids healthy um we will definitely communicate with the parents and Guardians um but the main thing is we want to right now take care of them so if they're having a even an asthma attack whatever it is and you some cases you'd want to call 911 and in those
cases if you call 911 make sure if we're not there call us we're going to come and we're going to try to assist the kids until the emergency responders arrive so we're really here just to make sure to keep them healthy so now let's move on to and we're going to talk about confidential Services later so we are providing again your primary care a lot of our kids and our health centers are coming down for their sports physicals so of course when it's time for a new season to start like you mentioned wrestling girls and boys basketball they're going to be at our health center because they need to get those sports physicals um in addition to that we're doing regular physicals um you know like your annual well child exams we're doing all of
that vision and hearing screenings immunizations you know your lab services your tests again we're really uh regular doctor's office we're also referring you to Community Services when needed and we also refer to specialty services so for example if your your provider notices something going on with your heart they're going to refer you to Cardiology so um again wonderful services that are going to be provided um Behavioral Healthcare and I think this is really huge because Behavioral Health is I think um one of the most important things that we are now focusing on and should continue to focus on and want kids to be open in addressing those Behavioral Health needs so we do have um our licensed Master social workers who are going to be providing the care and they'll do counseling individual therapy mental
health assessments um physical sexual abuse counseling um substance abuse education counseling and referrals and you know as much as we would like some of the stuff not to happen it exists it happens unfortunately but the main thing is that your kids have somebody to talk about it somebody who can who they can trust in coming to and make sure that we are meeting their needs um I think in our with our behavioral health consultants they become like I don't know family members to the kids they look up to them they talk talk to them um all the time in the hallway they're like so welcoming and I think the kids um appreciate having trusted adults to to turn to and they will come for confidential services so confidential services will include things like pregnancy testing
um STI HIV screenings will also do STI treatments um Crisis Intervention and Emergency Care again we'll do the mental health assessments physical sexual abuse counseling and referrals um and again these are services that they are they are definitely going to be used and we're great to be able to help assist in that area with these kids because this is some some sensitive material and it's it's a big thing for kids and so we want to make sure that we're doing a big job to get them what they need Family Planning Services again um family planning Services is not something that would be happening in a school-based setting so we're not going to um be doing like for example we don't give out any kind of birth control here um what what we can do is
um for kids who are interested in those Services we can we have the uh Willow Community Health Center so that's someplace that they can go it's offsite but again it's a service that will be available to um your students and at Willow they can also get free condoms I mean they don't it's not a big procedure to go in sometimes you can just walk in okay here you go but sometimes we want to also have them connect with a nurse and get some education because we want them to be as responsible and safe as possible that's a thing teaching them habits to be safe and um and to hopefully prevent you know the spread of disease and infection um Health Ed and Medicaid Outreach so a big thing of what we're doing with the health
education is we're coming into and how it works at the uh Lancing School District we're going into the classrooms we're doing workshops working directly with the kids to teach them about being safe we talk about bullying and and Dating Violence and we talk about suicide and homelessness and pre you know and preventing homelessness and we are offering these workshops to kids there's no there's no charge for it it's just a one wonderful service again there's really a great you know a lot of issues that um I think that is happening and me and I get I think all of you in a school see see what's going on you're living what's going on and I think again it's important that we address what's really going on so talking to the kids um on a regular
basis and just engaging with them to help to keep them educated um we also provide Medicaid enrollment assistance so if you don't have insurance or coverage we'll do our best to try to connect you to coverage so um we will assist with completing a Medicaid application that may involve your family or the students family their parent or Guardian but we'll definitely want to get something submitted to the state to get it started because even if you start that application and you don't complete it all the way hopefully the state's going to follow up to see what's going on because they want you to be they also want you to have insurance and get connected coverage and in terms of um the uh Insurance help again it's not even just here you can go to any
of our health centers and they will help help you as well so what are the benefits of us collaborating well the main benefit to me is I'm a very very strong advocate for taking care of our kids and keeping them healthy and um I believe that the Ingam Community Health Center believes that as well and supports that as well so you know again improving the access to care not everyone has you know great Transportation sometimes and so just being able to be right here on site and um have your children taken care of I think is just a huge thing um you have the great benefit again like I said is kids need to be in the classroom they need to be at school they need to be at school every day or as many
days as they possibly can and that's the thing that's going to help to you know help improve Pro their academic success and that's I think our common goal is to keep them healthy and get them through school and the importance of I think for us is just to have school and healthc care just it has to be in the same setting because your kids they're going to get hurt they're going to get sick it's going to happen and at some point you want to make them make sure that they get connected to that care and a lot of times with um kids kids you don't always they don't always go to their parents when they have or Guardians when they have situations that come up um so there's many times that they'll come down to
the Health Center and say well I'm feeling like this or they want to talk to somebody because you know something's happening to me at home I and maybe they don't understand it but they do understand that they need they need to talk to someone and tell them they know something might be a little bit off and we're there to help them figure it out and hopefully we're working together so when we when we're doing something with the kid we want to make sure the admin team that you all know what's going on not in terms of revealing you know their uh Health um uh Private health information or anything but it's just we want to say hey you know what you got somebody down here who maybe they need to go home maybe they need
a timeout that kind of thing just working together to um make sure we're getting that kid their needs so how do we do this all well it takes a whole lot of work and before I talk about framework I want to talk about one a lot of the efforts that have gone through so far not only in the grant writing but in the in the cac's where you have Brandy and Xander um they've been meeting with us since what Robin March and um we've been having like regular meetings so many wonderful wonderful comments thank you your input has been oh my God Priceless and I I can't thank you enough for just coming to all of our meetings and supporting us so that helps us to put together a framework in which in which we
will Define what our relationships are this is our inter agency agreement the inter agency agreement will say things um that will give you the clear communication of what it is we're here for so we have we have our common goals we have our regular meetings that we'll be doing and the thing is is that we have things that we do you guys have things that you're going to be doing so part of what we're going to be doing definitely is we're going to be um meeting with the kids we're going to see them for care so this is going to go into roles and responsibility so our job is to make sure we're taking care of them part of what your job is in the school district is you're going to be providing us a
space and we're getting a wonderful space in the old um and well I think what is your current technology department and so we're really appreciative of um being in that area and again we are going to you know there's things that we will do to make sure everything go smoothly the thing is we got to communicate we do have to have an open line of communication the health center and the schools working together talking about the kids and making sure that um everything is is set for them meeting their needs so some of that might be you know you come down you have you know kids who are they come to the office I'm sick I want to go home okay you can go to Health Center you know that kind of thing so when
you see that yeah let us know and um we have to the staff have to have a understanding of what to do and when to use us and pretty much if you refer kids to us we're going to take care of them as best as we can so what's been done so far I may have Chris jump in and help me with this um I I can do that okay so far the state has been generous in providing us with a grant subsidy to help us jumpstart this project and so what we're going to do with the grant subsidy is capitalize the construction project which will take place I don't want to get ahead of the bullet points on the slide deck but that's going to take place relatively soon but as you can see
in your presentation or your copy of it the community advisory uh committee has met since April 2023 so a lot of activity happening there A needs assessment along with uh parent Community survey feedback information as well as student interest surveys all of that information was collected and compiled and synthesized and informing us on what kind of service offerings we should be bringing to East Lancing high school and so by August 15th we were able to thank you superintendent Leo identify a space for which to house the new Health Center and as Nancy pointed out it is in the currently established uh it area and thank you to the administration team for making that possible and as I mentioned before the state was generous in offering us subsidies not only for the construction project but also
for implementation and so as you can see in your presentation we've received a $275,000 award to assist us with Staffing and supplies things of that ilk so we're excited about that next slide so what's next by January 1st of 2024 we will offer Behavioral Health Services on site here and so we we wanted to bring those services to you as soon as possible we recognize that it's not the comprehensive portfolio of services that Nancy mentioned previously but we wanted to start with something as soon as we possibly can health education services will also be provided we have a health education nurse who is fantastic and rounds throughout the Lancing the greater Lancing area so he'll be bringing those resources to you and as I mentioned and It's featured here Behavioral Health Services so we are
absolutely excited about this partnership we're absolutely excited about bringing these healthc care services to the students and we're absolutely excited to be treating the East Lancing Community we've not been here before it's high time that we do our duty so with that thank you and we will entertain any any questions that you may have thank you Mr Drake um are there is it Mr Drake Dr Drake I should clarify Mr Drake is fine okay um are there questions for the team from the board I have one um thank you for the excellent presentation um as far as the um evidence-based workshops for students and community members when will those be presented when will they be during school hours or you know how will you present those it's been our practice to to Really partner with
the school systems and delivery of said services so you can view us as an extension of your team that's truly how we operate so whatever is most workable for your faculty That's How we'll deliver those Services okay good to know and how many staff will be on site we will have a there will be a medical provider a behavioral health consultant a nurse and you'll have two medical assistants um a community health worker and then some so that's six and sometimes I'll come over there the uh charge nurse will be over there so the lead Community Health rep will be over there so anywhere from a normal day like six to nine like for staff meetings you'll probably have nine and then maybe Chris and my my supervisor so that's great okay but normally you
should have like six people good to know okay thank you sure to follow up on that will the um uh provider uh the primary care will it be the same primary care or will will it be a um rotating Primary Care no not a rotating uh provider we will have one provider embedded within the school that students can familiarize themselves with and build a trusting relationship with great thank you but starting out just to let you know as we bring on a new provider our current School base sites their providers might be over here working with them as well so you might see a couple of providers here as well great so I understand that the the primary target is the the school population of the district will Services be available to uh to to
people who are not enrolled in our schools as featured in our presentation we will serve persons ages 4 through 21 okay so I imagine that there are persons ages 19 through 21 who not not part of your student body I might be a little assumptive here but I'm just saying yeah well and there's obviously a lot of persons in that age demographic that live in our community um but and I'm certainly I would welcome the service to them I guess that Dov tales in to another question and I know that you're probably still working through the site plans and whatnot but it's my understanding that the actual clinic will be access will be accessible from outside of the school is that the plan yeah thank you Xander Xander is correct yes getting us on the
straight and narrow thank you Z off the Old Hickory corner of the building they take Corner yeah yeah will there be an internal Insurance absolutely yeah so both and yes along those lines we want to make sure that the health center and school remains safe while we're offering those services and so there will be a serious security detail or element is a part of all of this to make sure that uh perpetrators don't uh infiltrate your school thank you other questions um so I think my first question was similar to trusty martins's about who can access I think you've clarified that um can I ask also ask it seems clear but I want to clarify this is not there's no insurance required or anything like that anybody who is in that age demographic is able
to access Center that's right as a federally qualified Health Center we are mandated to offer services to all regardless of their ability to pay or insured status excellent um and then I had one specific question too about um your you mentioned in the presentation that there are referrals provided to mental Mental Health Resources and that is really great to hear I know that a lot of people are having trouble accessing getting um into providers A lot of people are full they aren't accepting new patients so are you helping with that process too of getting people connected to service providers who have openings and can transfer care there absolutely yay all good news thank you so much other questions okay well we I imagine we'll be seeing some of you one of you combination of you
this jaara too um in the future so um I'm looking forward to that I know that um if I've learned anything in this role it is that we don't do anything on our own except for superintendent Leo who I think is maybe super human but the rest of us um rely on relationships and this is just adding to that team so I'm so happy that this is happening that we're able to house it here thank you so much to the admin team um for helping this come together and to obviously all of you and we look forward to this collaboration thank you so much thank you for having us yay [Applause] good day good day and the good day continues with our second presentation from our Nan students who attended a conference I think and
are coming forward with an action plan with their advisors yeah we'll just give a minute here to transition I see Miss Burton coming forward great Miss Sanchez great that was awesome that is so good she said that's so awesome alrighty good evening everybody uh we will not be before you long cuz I got to get my babies home they some of them have been here doing sports and plays and all the other things hanging out with us um and y'all don't want to hear from me you want to hear from them cuz they're better than me um but my name is Claudia Burton and I am the director of equity and social justice for East laning Public Schools um and we are coming to talk to you about our experience um of being a part
of the MSN student conference um I'm before you today just because I wanted to give some background to um our board and maybe members of our community who are not as familiar with MCN and what MN is for us in our district um because it's a really great organization and we're very fortunate to be a part of it um so we wanted to give you a little background then I'm going to kick it to the advisers and the kids to to finish the rest um so what is MCN um MCN is a National Coalition of multi-racial school districts who have very similar demographics in terms of um racial social economic status um most of the districts are usually positioned somewhere um in a major university backyard obviously we're Michigan State um we just went to
Madison Wisconsin um for the conference and so obviously they have University of Wisconsin there um and so all of us are gleaning towards um improving the opportunities access closing opportunity gaps um for students of color and raising the achievement so that is the goal of all of the districts who are part of msan um msan stands for Multicultural student achievement Network um if you been preview to msan before used to stand for minority but the kids were like Hey we're the global majority we are not the minority so um we went through a whole reenvisioning process last year um looking at new logos what would be our name um and so we settled on a new name of montic cultural so that is what msan is um m is comprised of 20 plus actually 27
districts I going to say um and it ranges in size of the districts and amount of students that are there um and covering mostly Midwest um in the North East Eastern side of the United States and then we have some schools in Arizona so shout out to Arizona that's there um and so Michigan actually has three districts so ourselves Farmington public schools and then also an arbor um and Farmington was also a part of the student conference so we had some neighbors down the road who were there with us as well so so it's pretty cool um so the mission and vision of of MCN is really um I feel intertwined with what we're trying to do here in East Lancing um so the vision is really to empower um our students which you'll hear
from very soon but also um ourselves as educational practitioners so um while our students including Middle School our Middle School babies are not here right now but they are also a part of this in some capacity as well um are really engaging and what it means to do the work of being just and Equitable um celebrating diversity and um belonging which was the focus of the conference this year um you belong here so what does it mean to create belonging create Community within our spaces and also anti-racism practices so um we also celebrate all of those things and we know what that means but we look at the intersections of all of those different facets as well um and the mission is working around to build the capacity hence the student conference so they can
engage in Keynotes and doing all the great things and learning and action planning they have a little fun too um but they do work throughout the year as well and so you'll hear an opportunity of our students um sharing their action planning what they've done not only at the conference but what they've done throughout the school year as well with our staff and and more to come as well um so before I kick it to our our advisor here who's amazing um so some of the student leadership development in which they engage and which I just mentioned um one of them is the inperson three-day conference um which we had the opportunity um to go to Madison Wisconsin for and it was a great time I got to travel with the kids at well and
myself and Mr Neil Miss Sanchez um we probably took the greatest group of kids I could probably ever say um they were amazing they were super engaged the entire time um they were just they were so cute we had a lot of fun so they they learned a lot you know they participated in a lot of sessions a lot of Keynotes that they sat through and really gave a lot of attention to um but we also had a little fun too little little dance you know for the kids there on on different nights and little talent shows so there was a good mix of of entertainment and so fun and and learning as well um a big piece of that is they had to on the final day create an action plan which they'll share
for you what they want to implement um within the school year um and then also our students are engaging throughout the year um in action planning and they're going to talk about their some last year um and what they were able to implement with the staff this year um and then later to come we'll come back and talk about what our middle school students are doing as well so that is Crux of msan I'm going to kick it to our amazing advisor Miss Sanchez she is amazing with our kids and Mr Neil is not here but he is also a part of the team so take it away such a such a fabulous introduction well um I'm Diana Sanchez I've now been an adviser for msand since uh fall of 2020 so I kind of
got pulled in when they first started doing these online sessions isgc um and got to be a part of that kind of smaller cohort we had a bit of an off year just with the transition back to being in person uh for Learning and they repeated the session so there wasn't much new for us to engage in but last year they revamped that had new speakers the entire year so um what was part of the beginning process for Steve Neil and I U my co-advisor is we went through about 23 24 applicants for our am sand Scholars um and chose eight amazing students um one of which who has already graduated um so we got to pull in uh two of our incoming freshmen this year um last year our sessions basically once per month
we got together during the second half of the day uh had our students in the hub all together we got to meet for a little bit have some lunch uh enjoy our session for about two hours and then debrief and then throughout those sessions was kind of leading towards our action plan um so a lot of the keynote speakers uh are inspiring our students to think about you know what they would like to do in our schools and we sort of landed on a theme around microaggression so um throughout our time last year we even met for a full day where we talked microaggressions what we would want our staff and students to know um and then presented at the poster fair at the end of the year last year and of course this year
being able to finally go back in person to our uh student conference was an amazing opportunity um I think I can speak for my colleague Steve and I that being able to engage in this work with uh Claudia as well as our students just it's our it's why we're here it's it's why we're in a district like East Lancing so um we're so excited to be able to take five students and uh they're going to be able to share a little bit more about action plan last year and our action plan this year so I'll go ahead and introduce our students um we have six with us tonight um we had two students that just weren't able to make it and then we also wanted to mention our graduated senior Alex Ellington who did play
a big role in our uh creating our action plan last year so um I'm going to kick it to uh one of our msand Scholars who uh played a big role in our action plan from last year and she's going to talk about that hi everyone uh my name is Marisa Sado GES I'm a junior here at East lanting High School I've been this is my second year in msand so I've definitely gotten a chance to know a lot of new people here and really really um see everyone's aspects and views on our action plan so this year's action plan well last year we got the opportunity to create our action plan which is calling out microaggressions and calling in bystanders the first part of our plan was to create a workshop for our teachers
and staff at the high school which took place this year September 5th um at their professional development and the next Workshop will actually be February 16th um at their next PD for is on a Friday uh so we felt it was really important to touch on micr and how to identify them as a student and as a teacher and how to call them out and call people in as students being taught by predominantly white staff we have often experienced microaggressions without others knowing how to identify them and how to call them out our Workshop put teachers through different scenarios for example teacher to teacher microaggressions teacher to student and St and student to teacher microaggressions we got a lot of really good feedback on our um on our Workshop we put a lot of teacher
and staff in some really uncomfortable situations and we really wanted to make them understand not understand but show them what it is like as students of color in our school to experience those things and how it makes us feel and how would they feel if that happened to them as well so we put them through a couple scenarios we gave them scenarios and we hope to um correct and advance that a lot more for our next Workshop thank you thank you Marisa all right I'm going to call forward a couple of our students are going to talk about uh this year's action plan all right hi I'm Chloe Vickers I'm a sophomore at East ensing High School and this is my second year and Amon and I'm going to talk about our current plan which
is called the humanization station it's a podcast to inform student staff and community members on The Human Experience of the E family through dialogue we are creating and sustaining a sense of belonging amongst everyone in our community so um why we created this action plan in the first place was because we observed that our staff and students have not had opportunities to enact their entire Humanity in our school and this has led to a disconnect in our community and providing a space for people to speak their truth will help bridge The Divide and strengthen engagement belonging and well-being some of our steps that we would take to make this podcast would be gathering equipment and getting tips for a successful podcast we would also develop ENT protocol and legal obligations for publication we would record
this podcast ourself edit it ourself and publish it ourselves and our culminating event would be a community panel with elhs students and the East Lancing Community as a whole and after this podcast um we would like to use some of our work in staff meetings and provide in school opportunities for students to reflect on the topic so that we can build empathy and understand each other better as holistic humans the topics we have decided on our race gender lgbtqia plus uh people's disability and socioeconomic class we have talked a bit about working with msan Scholars and student leaders from Identity based Club so what that means was we would get people from either BSU or Alliance or latinx student Union or any of those clubs in casee they were interested in being on our podcast
and also calling in different teachers to talk with us and we will gather student and staff testimonials from those clubs or just anybody who's interested about their sense of belonging and these staff will do reflective work through professional development days all right for our final uh sharing um we're going to have two students come up uh who got to attend our conference and just share a really quick moment something that stood out to them uh from our conference um hello my name is Charlie Collison I'm a sophomore at East laning High School and this is my second year of msan I was one of the five Scholars that attended this year's msan conference in Madison Wisconsin during my time at the at the conference what stood out to me the most was being the minority
I'm the only non- byock elhs msand scholar and I was one of the very few white people at the conference considering our our school is over 50% white it was very different from my everyday life walking through the halls or sitting in my classes so while in a way this was uncomfortable because it was a new experience it was also enlightening and helped me put myself in the shoes of people who aren't always part of the M majority hi I'm a mayor Med and this is oh I'm a freshman at East Lancing high school and this is my second year in msand because I had the opportunity to do it last year as a as a middle schooler um my experience on the trip uh it's kind of hard to sum up in a lot
of words because it was it was really empowering and and accepting and really inspiring in a lot of ways um I felt really accepted by everyone there by their kindness and respect to my personal things like my sexuality and my pronouns and my time there was it was uh it was just a really good time to be around everyone like that and uh while I was there and seeing all of the m and kids working together really hard to broaden our school community in these situations ations and everything like that was really inspiring to me to see everyone do all that and um yeah thank you thank you so much well that is what we have prepared for you tonight so if you could take a moment thank our students for being here but thank
you so much for providing the space for us to share about this wonderful experience we are happy to answer any questions we can certainly have a student pop up here there uh happy to answer anything that you all have questions about awesome thank you so much questions for this awesome team name from board members or the superintendent I love that you're going to be doing podcasts that's so great so when do you have a goal of rolling your first one out or when can we look forward to listening um we are going to be putting together um our first one in December so we'll be meeting probably sometime uh during the school day and then hoping to roll out basically one episode per month January through May so five episodes total cool and how can
we listen like how we get all of our other podcasts I would imagine so I think that's the piece that we are our tips and tricks that we're going to be uh picking up on from other folks um my colleague Steve has a couple of people I know Claud as well um just going to be sort of feeding off of some experts in that area and see what would be the best way for us to do that um so yeah it'll be a bit of a Learning Journey for all of us very impressive thank you one of the uh sort of steps to getting in the podcast underway was securing equipment have you had any luck with that like where are you on that step uh yes no um actually we reached out to a
couple people Mr Neil is not here he was kind of the the jump starter uh to reaching out and getting people to donate or you know give us some tips and tricks so yes is it solidified I'm not 100% sure we'll have to check in with Mr Neil So I think I think that it'll be a really neat thing once you get it and it's something that you you're kind of the Pioneers here so maybe some other uh you know people and groups in the district could take advantage of it we could combine resources absolutely I'm wondering too I recently had the opportunity to tour techsmith and they have their own little recording studio right inside and they are just looking for local groups to partner with and I bet our friends at techsmith might
be able to help us so it just dawned on me as I listen to all of you I bet we can uh maybe connect there I'd also suggest WK who's always looking for like connect with communities absolutely they have a de initiative and folks that are trying to do work so they might be able to there might be another potential that would be awesome and we know they're Dei director de yeah another option yeah like I don't want yeah I'm not going to name her name but it's okay you email it to me awesome um and did I hear a rumor that we are hosting this conference next year we are so we are laning will be the home for the 2024 MN conference which is actually the 25th anniversary of Ms as well so
uh it is going to be a pretty special time our kids were already writing in our like group chat was like we are not doing this we are doing this so great that they were there as well because they will be a big part of this planning process as well so yes we will be hosting so yeah cuz you know we need to represent we cannot yeah oh we'll bring it we'll bring it yeah we're going to need some yeah we might need some support at Michigan State Unity November 13th through 16th 202 please put it on your calendar con ConEd yes we just last week we solidified the dates so it's November 13th through 16th of 20124 on notice or will'll be hosting um what 250 to 300 individuals for this past conference it
was kind of wasn't really sure if it was going to happen so we had about 160 kids in attendance um about 50 40 to 50 chaperon that were there um so it was a pretty decent sized group got to mingle with lots of people awesome that's amazing well I just want to thank the advisers and uh Miss Burton for all of your work on this project but particularly to you students for making this commitment I know that it's not easy to stand in front of the school board and speak publicly and talk about your experiences um and share personal details and I am just very honored that you name us as co-conspirators I take that mantle proudly and hope that we can represent in that way and being supportive to the work that you all
are doing but I think I just speak on behalf of the whole board and saying that we affirm the important knowledge that you have in our um the importance of us listening to what it is you have to say um I am constantly um encouraged by our students and the powerful voice that you demonstrate and let us know that you you know this is why we're here right because we believe in you and um we know that what you're doing is so important so thank you continue the work that you're doing and let us know how we can be supportive I mean and let us know you know feel free to call us out and call us in we're here for you okay thank you [Applause] yay great day great day okay there's an agenda
