Dakota has had an absolutely stellar year, living with confidence and joy in every corner of his classroom. It's been incredible to watch his emotional growth. He now handles new tasks and transitions with such such a positive, can-do spirit, especially when he uses his favorite timer to keep him on track. Dakota is a total super superstar in academics, too. He's mastered his letters and sounds, and he's cruising through his numbers well past 20. He's
even becoming a little wordsmith, enthusiastically spelling Beyond his skills, Dakota is the heart of our social circle. Classroom favorite, always surrounded by his fan club of friends, ready for hugs and hand-holding in the halls. It's been a delight to hear his voice grow from short phrases into wonderful, full conversations. We simply love the sunshine and laughter Dakota brings to our community every single day. >> [applause] >> All right. At United Oaks, we have Zoe Harper. I am incredibly proud of Austin, and it is both an honor and a privilege to see him receive this award tonight. >> [applause] >> Hello. Our student of the month is not here, but we'd like to honor Nola Ogletree. Nola is a new student to Hoover this year, and she has done such a fantastic job of learning all of our procedures and expectations. While she started out the year on the quiet side, it has been a pleasure to watch Nola make friends and
find trust in her abilities. She now volunteers her ideas and comments without hesitation during our class discussions, and other students look up to Nola as a role model in our classroom. She leads with a quiet confidence as a and is a super and is super dependable helper in all situations. She is truly deserving of this honor. Congratulations, NOLA. He likes to help those students who are having difficulty with their day by encouraging them to be positive and make good choices. >> [applause] >> Uh good evening. The Hazel Park High School representative uh this evening is Christopher Burks. I think he's on his way in. Um his teacher, Miss Bratsky, says Chris is a very polite and respectful young man. He does his
best in everything. He wants to do well. If he needs anything, he will ask. Hey, buddy. He is also a leader in class and tries to get his classmates on track. Chris has always been a model student and is a pleasure to have him in class. Mr. Rubin says Chris is a student who always has a positive attitude and wants to do well. He is respectful and hardworking, and as I've gotten to know him better over the years, I like him more and more. Mr. Shirley says Chris is a hard worker, always ready to learn, and a pleasure to have in class. Miss Kelly states that Chris Burks lights up the room with his smile and positive energy, as you can see as he's coming in the door. He is usually uh hard at work
in class trying to get his work done while still trying to find out what his friends have been up to. He is kind and polite, and I look forward to seeing him every day. He is one of the students who will say good morning on his way into class and have a nice day on his way out. I'm very proud of Chris. Oh, and he also likes snacks. Um Mr. Nabozny said that Chris is an outstanding student who always exudes positivity and is well respected by his peers. Chris never shies away from asking the tough questions and never makes excuses. Chris is truly a great addition to any classroom and a model student at Hazel Park High School, and I couldn't say more. He's a fantastic kid, and Mom, you've done a great job with
your family. Your family is beautiful. I love them. Christopher, congratulations. All right, we do have uh teacher of the year uh in each grade level. So, we're going to start first uh with Miss uh inviting Miss Harrison to introduce the early childhood teacher of the year and say a few words. Hi, good evening again. Um ooh, I just lost it. Hold on. Sorry. Um I'm very excited to bring to you today Dina Pedley. Dina is um one of our dynamic Dina is a dynamic preschool teacher. She uses multiple strategies to engage her students. It is not unusual for you to walk in the building and see Dina roller skating down the hallway, kids behind her carrying the Bluetooth speaker, jamming to some Kids Bop uh on their way to the gross motor room. She dresses
as a pirate with the kids for pirate day. She's always always coming up with great ideas. Um her students are always smiling and laughing, and when you enter her classroom, you can see that they truly enjoy being there. Um Dina is a leader in our building, and our staff knows they can count on her for assistance and ideas. She's so creative, and she's just always coming up with amazing ways and ideas to engage the students. Um Dina also is the creator of our play every year for our dinner and a play. She researches books, decides what the play is going to be, and then she writes it out for everybody, and our staff gets up there and does it every year. They do such an amazing job. Um we are really extremely lucky to count
Dina Pedley as a teacher at Webster. >> [applause and cheering] >> Dr. Krause is going to announce our elementary teacher of the year. So, first let me say I'm totally winging this. I did not have anything prepared, but I know this woman well. So, this is Tanya Wilson, um who is a teacher at Edison. Tanya not only grew up in Hazel Park, graduated from Hazel Park High School, did her student teaching in Hazel Park. That's where I met her because she did her student teaching at Edison. And then she started her career teaching the EI room um when Edison was still an elementary. And then when um Edison Center program took over, she became one of our teachers there. Um all I can say about Tanya is she is what exemplifies a master teacher. Um
I I use her to show other teachers what it looks like to really just be an incredible teacher. Um her parents love her, her students love her. Um she's her num- >> [laughter] >> her number one um goal always is to do what's best for her students. And um when I say she goes above and beyond, she goes above and beyond. I work a lot on off hours, but she probably works even more. Um she is really truly just a wonderful, wonderful person and a wonderful teacher. MR. JOHN BURNETT IS GOING TO ANNOUNCE OUR high school teacher of the year. Uh our high school uh our secondary teacher of the year is Jared Nabozny. Uh super proud of Jared. Um he's again a former Hazel Park student, grew up in Hazel Park. Student taught in
Hazel Park, has been lifer here. Um Jared's always first in our building. I try and get there early. He's beating me by a half hour every day. And he's, you know, his girls, he's got some young girls at home, so he's at dance today. Um but really tries to be there as much as he can. Um he teaches social studies and US history for us. Um Jared's built great relationships with both students and staff. And he makes time for everybody. So, he's always there, willing to help out, pitch in, do whatever he can do. Hazel Park High School is really excited to have Jared as our teacher of the year. Congratulations, JARED. >> [applause] >> WHILE WE'RE TRANSITIONING, IF ANYBODY OUT there wants to do public comment, Thank you. you need to fill out a
paper. Dr. Wolcott, are we skipping? I don't have my glasses. Are we doing the high school presentation? I think we have. So, we're doing Annette's and then the high school because I don't know if anyone's here from Annette. So, leave us out. We may go right to the high school presentation. And we're not doing high school representative? We're just doing the high school presentation. Okay, let's say congratulations to our teachers. We have just awesome teachers and wonderful students. This is a very, very positive part of our meeting to recognize such hardworking people and studious students, and um it's great to to have the turnout that we did. So, next I have um we're moving down to the high school presentation. I'm not sure. Is there an Annette's representative here? No. Okay. High school presentation. Sorry.
Photo shoot. Uh All right, good evening, everyone. George Demos, principal at the high school. Um it seems like yesterday we were painting parking spots and dancing in the cafeteria during homecoming. Hard to believe we're 2 months away from the end of the school year and only a month left with our senior class of 2026. All systems at Hazel Park High School are running smoothly. We spent the last 2 weeks administering the PSAT test for grades 9 through 11, and everything went well thanks to our testing team and staff. Maintenance included with all the tables and chairs needed for testing in the aux gym. Rachel, Matt, and Celia are phenomenal. Recently, we had a group of art students take a train to Chicago for a tour of the city with Mr. Hicks and Miss Sakely during
spring break. While they were there, they met teachers former a their teachers former professor from the Center for Creative Studies downtown at the legendary pizza place Giordano's and had lunch. We also have two Cedar Point trips in the works, one for senior the senior class, the other for 11th graders with Wayne State Trio. Speaking of the senior class, the Hazel Park High School All Night Party has been brought back to life this year with the help of 2026 senior class parent group. If any of you would like to volunteer that evening for supervision, please let us know. Um the last day for seniors is May 15th with the all night party to follow that evening. Finally, Mr. Barnett, myself, and staff and students would like to thank the board for the approval of the Yondr
pouches. This has been such a positive for the building. Taking cell phone use away from students during the school day has not only increased safety, it has improved the building climate and culture tremendously. Thank you again for the Yondr pouches. Just one more thing before I turn um things over to our student presenters uh this evening. I want to thank Mr. Barnett for leaving retirement to step into the role as assistant principal. He's a natural at what he does. His relationship with staff, students, and parents are outstanding. I don't know where we'd be without him right now, so thanks, John. Appreciate it. And with that, I'm going to hand things over to Malia Staton. >> [applause] >> Hello. As you guys know, my name's uh Malia Staton. I'm the president of student council. I'm here
joined by my members, Alyssa Dean and Morgan Cook. Student council specializes in fundraising for homecoming as well as uh PBIS celebrations and pep rallies. The student council is an inclusive group of members that um focus on making sure that everyone's opinion is valued and everyone's voice is heard. Our meetings are weekly and spent planning these events that were just stated by Morgan. Our upcoming events that we are planning are for um staff appreciation week where we honor all of our teacher and staff by giving them goodies and having a fun little celebration. And field day where we give a last little hurrah to all of our to all of our students. And it's a lot of the kids love it. We now hand it over to NHS. >> [applause] >> Hello again. My name is
Alyssa Dean. I am a senior at Hazel Park High School and president of the National Honor Society. This is vice president Preston Blaze and treasurer Morgan Cook. The National Honor Society is a student-led organization that is supervised by Mr. Mark Fairbrother. We each member um strives to enhance, celebrate, and enforce our four pillars, which is scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Yes, and members are selected based off their academic achievement, their community service, and their model behavior before, during, and after school activities. Um as well as that, NHS volunteers for both district and community events to build a service an ethical service-minded Yeah. >> [laughter] >> Support that. NHS NHS volunteers at community buildings and events within Hazel Park schools and like the library and other local entities. NHS also hosts special events such as the
staff cafe, subject wars, and our annual teacher appreciation cookout, which is coming up May 7th. To conclude, uh the NHS is full of members that demonstrate various leadership characteristics including responsibility, teamwork, organization, and much more that we have gained together over time and before we even became members that we brought in to help enforce the way that NHS is ran. Um we strive as a collective to support everyone that we can and whatever way we can. And one more thing, NHS also collaborates with American Red Cross to have three seasonal blood drives a year. And this year we've collected over uh exactly 89 units, which can save up TO 270 PEOPLE. >> [applause] >> THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. NEXT UM IS DRAMA. >> [applause] [laughter] >> Hello again. This is a professional meeting, sir.
Yes, I'm so sorry about that. Um my name is Preston Blaze and I am the drama president. Uh I am uh followed or accompanied by some fellow drama leadership members, Bria Collins, Timothy Hawk, and Jania Topolniska. Uh as you can see on our first slide, we have a picture from our most recent production, Beetlejuice. So, uh we had the opportunity to sell out all of our shows, which was fantastic. Every performance was full of energy. And yeah, it was very fun. Uh we have a few words up there that we believe uh represent our organization. So, first we got artistry. Leadership. >> Collaboration. Achievement. Inclusion. And legacy. Next slide, please. So, on this slide, we have uh some basic talking points of our organization along with uh some cute pho- photos to accompany it. Uh
first off, we have summer experiences. So, being part of Hazel Park Drama allows you to receive guidance and mentorship from Mr. Fairbrother on how to spend your summers enriching yourself, not rotting away on your phone. So, um over my years being in high school, I've had the opportunity to attend leadership camp at Albion College as well as going to Wayne State for a 1-week explor- or education explor- exploratory um camp. So, and that helped me solidify my decision to study education in college. So, perfect. I want to be a teacher. Uh yeah. So, that helped me with that. And this summer we are we've been preparing to possibly go to International Thespian Festival, which we received the invitation to go by receiving eight superiors at Michigan Thespian Festival. And fingers crossed, we're just waiting for
the approval. So, yeah. Uh next talking point is field trips. In drama, we experience many different field trips where we uh attend many workshops and we examine many plays. In the process, we've explored so many college campuses including Wayne State, Michigan Ann Arbor, and Oakland Community College. All of these experiences really help us gain a better understanding of post-secondary education while developing better uh critical thinking skills and deepening our artistry. I'll move on to performance Preston again. Hello. So, obviously with theater comes performance, you know, on stage. Um so, with on stage performance come some diverse skills that you you get to learn such as body movement, um vocal projection, singing, dancing, teamwork. All very important skills. Next up, we have classes. At the high school, we have three classes, drama one and two, and
advanced theater and video. In drama one, it is an entry-level class where beginners get to learn all theater skills. This year, during our first semester, we performed our very first black box production of It's a Wonderful Life, a live radio play, where I had the pleasure of co-directing with Preston Blaze. In advanced theater and video class, my classmates and I are currently working on producing, directing, and writing our very own original mini productions, where we get to learn how to have full creative range over our our work and learn new life skills. Passing on to tech and business. My peers and I have already gained experience on many marketable skills. Um these technical skills have really helped me personally feel like I know what I'm going to do in my future, which will be set
and prop creation. Um and those marketable skills include lighting and lighting and sound design, prop creation, stage management, which all help boost our collaboration um and our leadership skills with all these leadership opportunities. Moving on to business. All right. Within the business and publicity department, we're focusing on building meaningful connections both on and off stage and within the community. Whether that's through sponsorships or hosting community events that just bring more people into the arts. Um we also focus on expanding our presence through social media such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, uh highlighting our backstage be- behind-the-scenes content, uh you know, highlighting our performers, and uh connecting with our audience in a more person- in a more pers- personal and meaningful and consistent manner. Thank you. And almost done. Um, don't just listen to us. We
also have a little video on our next slide that our members took some time to create. Um, wait, maybe give me a second. There he is. DRAMA OWLS. SO, uh yeah, we we've created this video for you guys. >> [music] [music] >> Drama has given me a lot of inspiration of my art. It's also given me a lot of skills, like I've learned how to use a lot of power tools and I learned leadership skills in the process. Um, it's definitely made me a better worker and a better person. I definitely wouldn't have started doing as much, but like as much clubs, but it's really given me a lot of motivation to start all that. >> Drama has impacted my life in a very positive way. Me personally, I have social anxiety, so when I
first joined drama in my sophomore year, it was really hard to break out of that shell. And I thank that our director I thank our director a lot cuz he put me on stage and forced me to face that fear. And him doing that consistently really helped me a lot. And also, I got a well-rounded experience cuz I got to do backstage, on stage, all types of that good stuff. So, it really had a huge positive impact and I wouldn't do anything to replace it. Drama has impacted my life on quite a great scale. I don't think I'd be the person I am today without the influence [music] of our drama program. Our director, Mr. Fairbrother, has taught me a lot over [music] my three years of high school and I greatly appreciate him for
that. Drama has impacted my life by making me a more sociable person and helped me how I react with how other people talk to me, made me a more kind person, and it helped me realize how a production needs more than just one person to function. It needs everybody in Everybody has their own roles. And [music] there's other places like businesses or like establishments where everybody has to work together instead of just one person doing every other job. So, it just helped me realize [music] all these other different skills and how acting is actually pretty fun. Here's how drama has changed the trajectory of my life, opening opportunities within [music] education, mentorship, and leadership. On top of that, I've learned many life skills that will continue to carry me forward as I go to college.
Theater has impacted my life by giving me a great community to surround myself with. I've learned [music] lots of skills like communication, time management, self-sufficiency. I really [music] have grown a lot in this process for my two years here and I can't [music] wait to proceed further. How has drama impacted your life? Drama has impacted my life by making me have more friends, boosted my popularity, >> [music] >> and I'm not scared to perform on stage anymore. How has drama impacted your life? It made me not scared of being on stage [music] and helped me made more friends. How has drama impacted your life? Um, drama is a very >> [music] >> big community to me of with connecting with all my not friends with make friends. [music] Thank you. Thank you. >> [applause] >>
Do you want to have any comments? I want to know about the International Thespian. Where are you guys What's the Oh, International Thespian? Yeah. Yeah, that sounds amazing. Yeah, um, so it's happening like pretty much right as uh school ends and it's in the Indiana, so we'd have the chance to go to Blooming uh Bloomington Indiana University and we'd stay on campus, so we'd, you know, for our our juniors in the room, they would get another opportunity to explore another post-secondary option. And uh on top of that, it it brings it to the next level, so Michigan Thespian Festival has um all these professionals come and teach us all these different things, but with International Thespian Festival, it it gets the even the the more qualified individuals. And um they also expand upon even having
uh theater education courses. So, yeah, just a few things. It's a good opportunity. Yes. >> said a great presentation. Thank you. Thank you. Great presentation. Thank you. >> [clears throat] >> All right, I need a motion for a closed session. I motion. Go ahead. I move the Board of Education recess into closed session 8C for strategy and negotiation sessions connected with the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement. It's um 8A. They're both on here. Okay, it's only 8A, so Okay, then I change my motion. I move I move the Board of Education recess into closed session for um 8H to consider material exempt from discussion and or disclosure by the state or federal statute with Clark Hill as presented. >> DeMarco Mullins and Horton Clark Hill It's all It's all of them. That's only one
firm. Well, this doesn't say Clark Hill. Well, this doesn't say Clark Hill, so I don't know what you get. The The thing that was right here when I sat down. Yeah, I apologize. It's got um motion to recess into closed session 8A to consider material exempt from discussion or disclosure by the state or federal statute with DeMarco Mullins and Horton PC. Okay, what she said. >> [laughter] >> I'll support. I get a motion by Debbie. I can give one to you and Monica. That's right. Roll Oh, roll call for closed session, please. Mr. Rabois? Yes. Rete? Yes. Becker? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. And motion carried to close session. I should have read this one. This one's got >> Mhm. >> I motion to return to open session. Second. The motion to return
open session is seconded by Heidi. I'd like to make a motion to amend the agenda and add item W to new business for set aside settlement support. You said W? Yes, please. >> Okay. Sorry. I was seconding. I don't know if the Did you I don't know who supported me the first time I approved the agenda. >> We didn't. Oh, we didn't vote to come back to open session. >> No, we didn't. We just motioned. >> Oh. You want a roll call for open session? Yes. All right. LaFramboise? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. Ritti? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Now we need the amendment to the agenda. I make a motion to amend the agenda to add item W settlement for set aside Support. Oh. Okay. Motion by Heidi, support by Nate. Uh
roll call. I don't think we Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Ritti? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. So now we're on to public comments. I have one person, Jennifer Jackson. Uh please to be respectful and state your name and address. I'm not going to read the letter. You know this is a business meeting. Jennifer Jackson, 139 West Robert Avenue. Um through the lens of a mother watching these meetings. During last week's Committee of the Whole meeting on April 13th, our community had the opportunity to see the majority of this board directly challenge the unionization of central office staff. Voluntary recognition of unionization is a process where an employer agrees to recognize a union as the bargaining representative for employees without a formal Michigan Employment Relations Commission or MERC election. Typically, it is based
on a majority of workers signing authorization cards. This method demonstrates respect for employees' choice and often speeds up bargaining process when approved. The majority, more than 50% of our district's central office staff, signed authorization cards designating Teamsters Local 214 to become their union. The board held a closed session on April 6th to discuss this matter. It was said on April 9th the board members received documentation via email regarding this matter. And still one board member chose not to ask questions ahead of time so they could be answered at the April 13th meeting. Because that member was unprepared and because there is a team effort amongst the four majority of this board, the signed voluntary recognition of the unionization process did not pass last week opening our district to unfair labor practices um charges and potential
fines or fees at a minimum of $7,500. Um that was mentioned during the meeting last week. What has happened in the days following last week's meeting is unknown. I will mention the board president claimed last week that the board cannot make decisions in closed session, but we know that this majority makes decisions outside the scope of open meetings all the time. It's been 35 days since the majority of four voted to buy out the superintendent's contract. There were no warnings prior to that meeting that the buyout was in motion, yet it was admitted during the March 16th meeting that the majority of the four had the votes to buy out the contract beforehand. The following following week the four-person majority were all absent from the workshop that was scheduled with the $60,000 financial expert they
handpicked. They were too cowardly to show up and listen to the progress of the audit and budgeting processes that are currently underway. So far in those 35 days since their million-dollar vote, there has been no public discussion on the contract buyout and there have been no closed sessions between the law firms that represent Dr. Wilcox and our majority four Board of Education. For the community members in our district to support the contract buyout, why isn't this board working toward the goal that they publicly voted for? There is no movement. They also haven't had a public vote declaring that the contract buyout process has stopped or has been shelved. So the majority of four should be doing the work to get this done. They are not and now this board is failing you, too. We've watched
the leadership of this board just make a cash grab at our tax dollars for over 16 months in an attempt to protect their bad decisions with law firm after law firm. The investigations that turned up nothing last year that cost our district almost half a million dollars between the legal bills, paid administrative leave, and interim superintendent. Now the superintendent contract buyout, which will cost almost a million dollars and we will still need to hire and pay an additional superintendent to replace her. And just last week opening up our district to unfair labor practice charges that will cost at least $7,500 just because one person wasn't prepared. The majority of four of the school board at every opportunity every opportunity takes actions that show our school district staff how little they are valued. Collective bargaining with
our teachers' union and central office staff is happening in the coming months. Watch this board. Watch their actions and especially watch their inaction. We don't know what the majority of four are working for, but it isn't the students, it isn't the district staff, it isn't the community or taxpayers, and we need to find out who that is. Lastly, recall language for two of these these board members has been approved by the Oakland County Board of Elections. This took place last week. Coming soon, recall petitions will be available to sign. If you disapprove of this board's actions of the last 16 to 18 months, join the recall effort May 2nd from 10:00 to 2:00 at 23136 Hughes in Hazel Park. Thank you for your time. Next, we need a motion to accept the consent agenda. I
make a motion. Do my video just got a lot of exchange. Okay. I'd like to make a change, too, so So, I'll second it. I move the Board of Education accept the consent agenda as presented with moving conference requests to new business item X. I'd like to remove also the I second that, by the way. I'd like to also move the minutes from May 16th meeting off. You mean March 16th? March 16th? I believe that Nate would have to agree to amend his motion in order for you to do that. Okay. I amend my motion to state that we approve the consent agenda with moving conference requests to item X on the new business and uh 1A uh 316 Board of Education regular meeting unofficial minutes to remove that. Yeah, I can I can remove
it totally. And remove uh board meeting minutes 316 2026. Correct. All right, so motion by Nate, second by Heidi. Yes. Second the motion. Okay. Roll call. I'm not sure how we can remove minutes as a whole without some conversation about I'm curious why they were removed. Because they're not factual. Mr. Patterson, how do you remove minutes without discussion? I think you could just say we want them off of there. From the consent agenda. They have to be taken off. >> But I believe we would have to put them on the agenda to approve or disapprove. No, I've I've moved things off the agenda before. The motion is to remove something. Okay. But can we It's something that we're going to have to address at a certain >> point, yeah. Yes. At a later time. So,
are we suggesting to table them for Yes. Okay. >> I amend my motion to state that we move uh conference requests from consent agenda to new item X uh on new business and we table board meeting minutes 1A from March 16th, 2026. I so I second. Okay. That feels good. Um That was good. Um all right. Uh Um roll call. Becker. Yes. Fortress. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Rathie. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. I am yes. Okay, motion carries then. Madam Secretary, this is getting you broken up over there. It gets confusing. We're doing good for our first time situations. All right. 2026 teacher appreciation new business. I move the Board of Education approve the allocation of $5,000 to purchase items for staff appreciation um in the 2026 teacher appreciation resolutions as presented. Second. I just did compliments,
but I messed up. We were supposed to do the the settlement claim. We moved it to W. To W? >> Yeah, yeah. I have it at W. I don't think I missed that. Okay. All right. Resolution. I think Nate's reading it. Yes. Although the motion was made You seconded the motion, correct? Uh Heidi I did. Okay. So, we have to roll call. No, you can read the resolution. All right. Don't want the roll call. School District of the City of Hazel Park, County of Oakland, State of Michigan, resolution in support of teacher appreciation. Whereas teachers mold future citizens through guidance and education, and whereas teachers encounter students of widely differing backgrounds, and whereas our country's future depends upon providing quality education to all students, and whereas teachers spend countless hours preparing lessons, evaluating progress, counseling
and coaching students, and performing community service. And whereas our community recognizes and supports its teachers in educating the children of this community. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the School District of the City of Hazel Park proclaims May 4th through 8th, 2026 to be Teacher Appreciation Week. And be it further resolved that the School District of the City of Hazel Park strongly encourages all members of our community to join with it in personally expressing appreciation to our teachers for their dedication and devotion to their work. Okay, roll call for any comments, first of all, about teachers? Congratulations. They're the backbone of the district. They're awesome. They're awesome. They're they're what makes things roll every day in front of all those children. Um roll call. Then the roll call is a for the resolution and the
$5,000 to purchase items for staff appreciation. Uh Rathie. Yes. Becker. Yes. Fortress. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Yes. Motion carries. Next is motion for conference requests over $500. I move the Board of Education approve the conference conference requested as presented. Second. Okay, motion by Heidi, support by Monica. Any discussion? Roll call. Fortress. Yes. Rathie. Yes. Becker. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Yes. Motion carries. New motion for non-certified staffing. I move the Board of Education approve the non-certified staff for the 2026-2027 school year. Second. Okay, motion by Monica, second by Heidi. Any discussion? Okay. For the people at home, these items have been discussed previous last week. However, we can ask questions here and rediscuss something, but uh we have talked about these issues, so you don't think we're just reading a sentence and
voting on it. So, uh roll call, please. Rathie. Yes. Fortress. Yes. Becker. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Yes. Motion carries. ASD center program motion, please, for Edison. I move the Board of Education um have an addition of an ASD program at Edison. Second. Okay, motion by Monica, second by Heidi. Discussion? Roll call. Rathie. Yes. Fortress. Yes. Becker. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Yes. Motion carries. Need a motion for the gym floors at Hoover, Webb, and the junior high. I move the Board of Education approve the refinishing of the gym floors at the Hazel Park Junior High, Webb Elementary, and Hoover Elementary. Not to exceed >> I'm sorry. Did I say Hoover Elementary? Yep, you're good. Not to exceed $7,073 as presented. >> Now, I support. Okay, motion by Heidi, and second by Monica
to do the gym floors. Uh discussion? Roll call. Fortress. Yes. Rathie. Yes. Becker. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Yes. Motion carries. Board training motion. I move the Board of Education approve the board training um as presented. Support. Motion by Heidi and support by Debbie. Mine is going to be less because I'm taking four workshops or three and not five. So, there'll be a a money adjustment. Discussion? Roll call. Uh Fortress. Yes. LaFramboise. Yes. Becker. Yes. Rathie. Yes. Beaton. Yes. Hinton. Uh yes. Motion carries 6-1. Uh, museum contract motion. I move that Board of Education approve the renewal of the Erickson building lease as presented. Support. Motion by Heidi and support by Monica to renew the museum contract, the Hazel Park museum contract. Discussion? Roll call? I I actually do have one question. Sorry. Okay.
I don't think it's probably that big of a deal, but in this original lease we did, um, it said like due in 2017. Should this be updated or is this the vote fine? The vote is fine. It just renews it. Roll call. Okay. Ready? Yep. Fortress? Yes. Rutledge? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Alarm systems update for Webster, Hoover Junior High, High School, and Longfellow. I move the Board of Education approve the alarm updates at Webster Early Education Center, Hoover Elementary, Hazel Park Junior High, and Hazel Park High School, and Longfellow Community Center not to exceed $28,423.35 as presented. Support. All right. Motion by Heidi and support by Monica. Uh, roll call. Oh, can I get discussion? Yeah, sorry. Just I thought nobody ever asked for discussion. There'll be a
quick adjustment on that. We have a $20,000 uh, communications grant from the ISD, and so we'll be submitting $20,000 of this to come out of that grant, uh, and hopefully they'll approve it, um, and then only 8,000 out of the sinking fund. So, that'll save the sinking fund a little bit for some other projects. Nice. Great. Good to know. Thank you. When will we know on that 20,000? Um, it's due at They're all due at the end of the month from all the different districts, and so it's our money to spend. So, I'm not sure when the superintendent communications group will vote, but I'm assuming it'll be before June. Thank you. >> with all grants, it'll come again to the Committee of the Whole. Thank you. That was worth discussion. I So, I have a
question. Just So, we already have been awarded the grant. We're just seeing if we can use it for this. So, there was, uh, over a million dollars that, um, has been sitting at the ISD for some time from the state police for commu- com update, but that money isn't enough to really do the com update that they're talking about, and so they decided to divide it by student numbers, and our allocation is 20 grand, and in conversation, it seems like this is a really easy communication piece that we already have that won't take it from, you know. So, that's why I just We're already awarded. We're just seeing if we can use it for this. >> It's just we have They have to approve what we use it for. There's a superintendent committee to do
so. Got you. Okay. Okay, roll call. Fortress? Yes. Rutledge? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. High School walk-in refrigerator replacement. I move the Board of Education to approve the replacement of the High School walk-in refrigerator not to exceed $23,599.32 as presented. Second. Okay, motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Discussion? This isn't just so everybody knows. It's not a replacement. It's just like a rebuild of it. Right? That's what we said last week. >> Yeah. For rebuilding. Okay. I'm on the It's everything but the box. Right. Yeah. Okay, roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Can I get a motion for the Hoover boiler repair? I move the Board of Education to approve the repair at Hoover Elementary for the boiler
system at a cost not to exceed $5,024.55 as presented. Second. Okay, motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Any discussion? Roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Uh, need a motion for the Junior High hot water repair. I move the Board of Education to approve the repair at Hazel Park Junior High for the hot water storage tank at a cost not to ex- not to exceed $18,025 as presented. Second. Okay, motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Any discussion? Roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Need a motion for the Web roof damage. I move the Board of Education to approve the repair at Web Elementary for the roof damage at a cost not to exceed $6,562
as presented. Support. All right. Motion by Monica and support by Nate. Any discussion? Yes. Just that, um, it is a temporary fix on the roof damage. We actually have our set side coming out, um, tomorrow to look at the entire roof that may need to be totally replaced. This is to prevent leaks currently though, right? It's a short-term fix. Is this where it was leaking into the light? Wasn't there something last year people were saying? Yeah, they really came in. I think while I was gone there might have been some of this. This is a different spot. >> different spot. >> Yeah. The wind blew off the roof with some of that damage we had. Okay, roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Becker? Yes. Fortress? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Ukeru training, um,
motion, please. Oh, is there any discussion? We didn't have this. Oh, well, we need a motion first. I move the Board of Education approve Ukeru Ukeru. Ukeru train the trainer recertification in an amount not to exceed $3,450. Support. All right. Motion by Nate and second by Monica. Now we can have discussion. I don't think that was there last week. Was it? It was. Okay. If anybody has a question, I can explain it. Of course. Our Ukeru is the program that we put into place when we really needed to focus on, um, decreasing our numbers for seclusion and restraint, and it worked like a charm. Um, it's a beautiful program that really pairs, uh, trauma informed instruction for all staff in schools with, um, protective movements and different pads that really stop the engagement of any
kind of restraint. So, it keeps the staff safe, and it keeps our students safe. And we have seen a de- decrease in workers comp claims, um, due to this program. So, what I'm asking is to send We have two social workers at Addison who, um, have graciously volunteered to be trainers. One of them already is a trainer, so she needs recertification, which we need each and every year, and we have a new social worker there that needs the initial certification. So, you might see a difference, um, in the cost of training that's initial versus recertification. Are people trained outside of Addison? The Addison trainers then train everyone else. Yeah. So, the CPI trainers are at Jardine and Webb, and, um, the Ukeru trainers are at Addison. I tried to divide it up so that each
school isn't losing and their staff isn't out training so much, so it's it the wealth is spread evenly. Very good. Um, it has been successful. We haven't had any negative reporting, so it has been successful. It's nice to hear that the workers comp claims are down, too. Um, okay. So, uh, roll call. Becker? Yes. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Oakland Schools fiscal year 2027 budget. I move the Board of Education to approve the Oakland Schools fiscal year 2027 budget resolution as presented. Second. Motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Any discussion? We did read the resolution at the last meeting, so do we need to reread it in full or I don't think so. You might want to ask our district attorney over there. Jimmy? May I ask
the board? I would suggest reading it. The full thing? Yes. Okay. Do we have it? I still We do. It's in the packet. Would you like me to bring it to you? I have it up. I have it right here. Is it the Is it the same one, right? It's the same one. Okay. Uh, the School District of the City of Hazel Park, Oakland County, Michigan. The district A regular meeting of the Board of Education of the district was held on the School District of the City of Hazel Park in the district on the 20th day of April 2026 at 6:00 in the evening. The meeting was called to order by Beverly Hinton- President. Members present: Beaton, Becker, Fortress, LaFramboise, Rutledge. Members absent, Fox. Yeah, this is your next card. Oh, sorry. Um, the following
preamble and resolution was offered by member Rutledge and supported by Fortress. Whereas section 624 of the revised school code as amended requires the intermediate school board to support its proposed general fund budget no later than May 1st of each year to the board of each constituent district for review and two, not later than June 1st of each year, the board of each constituent district shall review and the proposed intermediate school district general fund budget, shall adopt a board resolution expressing its support for or disapproval of the proposed intermediate school district general fund budget and shall submit to the intermediate school board any specific objections and proposed changes the constituent district board has to the budget. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the board of education has received and reviewed the proposed intermediate school district general
fund budget in accordance with section 624 of the revised school code as amended and by the adoption of this resolution expresses its support for the proposed intermediate school district general fund budget. Number two, the secretary of the board of education or his or her designee shall forward a copy of this resolution to the intermediate school board or its superintendent no later than June 1st. Number three, all resolutions in so far as they conflict with this resolution be and the same are hereby rescinded. Okay. Thank you. It's all voted Ready? Yep. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? >> Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. I need a motion for the MASB board book renewal. I move the board of education approve the renewal of board book for the 2026-2027 school year in an amount
to exceed $3,000 as presented. Is there a second? Second. Okay, motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Uh, discussion? Roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. >> [clears throat] >> Beaton, yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Need a motion for safety training. I move the board of education approve the district district safety training at a cost not to exceed $8,500 as presented. Support. Motion by Heidi and second by Monica. Any discussion? Okay, roll call. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton, yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. 2026-2027 calendars, nice to see this. Motion. I move the board of education approve the calendars for the 2026-2027 school year as presented. Support. Motion by Heidi and second by Monica for the calendars for the school year. This is wonderful. Helps families do planning. Um,
roll call. Fortress? Yes. Rutledge? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton, yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Motion for policy books. I move the board of education approve the proposal from Miller Johnson for the student handbook, student athletic code of conduct, and board operating procedure manuals in an amount not to exceed $15,000 as presented. Second. Motion by Monica and second by Heidi. I have a question. Board operating, that's our protocols, right? Yes, so when we met, we talked about having him do those because you had asked several things to be added in and so that will be just part of the process that he does with our new policies and administrative procedures. Is anybody else in favor of board protocols that Miller Johnson do those? And it was the most costly you have it. That's it's it's
hourly rates not to exceed. Well, yeah, it's that one takes the most amount of time, 12 hours. >> And we still we still have to approve them. This is just approval for them to do that. We still approve the And so the purpose of this was as we discussed all along is that as soon as the administrative procedures and we're waiting for him to bring those for our reading us to read. Hopefully we'll have them for first reading in May, it might be June. They'll start to light first and all of these handbooks have to be updated with the links of all of those as well and then he'll have to work with you guys on the protocols with his suggestions and the areas that you want to still see. Well, you remember our protocols
took some time to develop the book originally when we did it seven years ago. It's a little bit. Did we were we charged for the admin procedures? Or was that It when they're finished, you'll get charged. Did we did we approve those? Yes, you If you did not approve them yet because we just met within last week and went through them and he will bring and I did put it in my weekly update, he'll bring us a copy back and we'll take a look at it as a team, make sure there's nothing in there, we'll bring it to the first reading either in May or in June depending on when he's able to get that. As soon as we think that they're where they need to be, we'll start working on these handbooks. It's important
for us to get going so that we have these ready for the start of the school year. There's still a lot of work to do to get this done up front. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I understand that. But the admin procedures were separate from the 15,000 that we're approving, right? >> Yes, those were already approved by you guys to pay to do early on with their policies and administrative procedures. Okay, so it was in with the policies. Yes. Didn't remember, but thank you. Okay. Is the 15,000 just in case it takes extra time than the hourly rate because it's higher than the actual estimate? >> Right. Just like It might not take this long. These are estimate times to try to give you an idea of what it potentially could be, but if the board takes
a long time, then it's going to take more than 12 hours. Got it. And I would guess there's a lot of questions and things that we want to get in there, so there might be some adjustments. Okay, roll call. I'm sorry, I missed you. Um, Monica and then Heidi. >> Okay, thank you. Rutledge? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton, yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Need a motion for the high school cross corridor door bid approval. I move the board of education award the contract for the high school cross corridor doors sinking fund project to Spartan Construction Group in the amount of 193,000 as presented. Is there a second? >> Second. Okay, motion by Monica and second by Heidi. Are these doors going to look like the ones that's going into the cafeteria? Are
we ready for discussion? Oh, yes. Yeah, all right. Yes, these were These are done and they were bid out to match the doors that were at the cafeteria. Um, these are where the gates were up which are not appropriate to have in schools, it's a violation of safety. So, um, it's a little bit more than what we thought but not by too much and so, um, we had two bidders, one at 193 and one at 195 so they were really close. Uh, so we know we've got it right and it'll be the same same hardware and then they'll also be set so that they will close in case of a fire. I was just curious when you have the gates, um, uh, you could see when kids are running or pushing or not in the
hall and these are look they just have the window at the top so you won't be able to you got to be standing there looking at the window. >> I think they'll be open. Those are very nice doors. They're very beautiful. They'll be opened at appropriate times. So, one of the things that we'll say is what we're finding is that basketball games or other things, kids are going into the halls and custodians are having to shoo them out so we'll shut down that. And it'll also shut them from running in the athletic hall during the day when they're not supposed to be down there. So, you're able to kind of maintain your community a little different. Today when I walked in, it was the end of lunchtime, they were all in front of the media
center and they were all over that spot. That also stops that as well so that during lunchtime, that's separated from all the, you know, dancing and communication that's happening now without the cell phones in the front front area. Are they putting more doors in the front area? We are. Uh, where the gates were that stopped you from going from that front area into the halls right in front of the media center. Yes, those are a set of doors. Okay, in front of the media center. Yes. We're not doing it on the other side, right? No, it it'll be on this side of the media center. No, I mean on the other side of it. Of everything. The cafeteria. >> Well, then so there's a door when you I'm going to go let's walk in the
athletic entrance. So, to the right is the athletic hall, there'll be a set of doors there. To the left goes takes you into the where the kitchen is right there, There'll be a set of doors there. Come down further where the locker rooms are. There'll be a set of doors that um stop people from going down there as well. Okay? Then come all the way down. There'll be a set of doors right in the front there um on the other side heading towards the media center. So you can come all the way through. So it'll stop um some of the movement that shouldn't be happening during the school day or in the evenings. So there's four sets of doors and and they they can go down if they can if you come in the front
door you can go halfway down that hallway for the gym entrance but not all the way down. No, they'll be able to go right to the gym. If you come in the front door. Right. You can't go through the You got to come through the doors and then you'll be able to go all the way down to the hall. Won't stop anything from there. If you come in the front door and you go to the right, you would be stopped there if it was in the evening. And you go to the right, you would be stopped there if it was in the evening. >> Okay. So I'm confused on the four set of doors but that's okay. So if I come [clears throat] in the in the I can walk all the way through Yes.
From the back to the front. Yes. Okay. Um Okay. Are they able to walk down the band hallway? Yes. Those are not blocked off cuz there's classes in there all day long. Okay. Was this a summertime project? Yes, as a matter of fact, pretty exciting that it'll get started as soon as soon as school gets out and it's slated to be done. Part of the bid was done before the first day of school. Nice. Okay, great. Uh roll call. Ritchie? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Uh student discipline motion. I move the Board of Education approve the student discipline as presented. Second. Okay, motion by Monica, second by Brady. Discussion? Roll call. Ritchie? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Uh the
next is just informational. The uh FOIA request. Uh there were four. There's five. Five. I'm sorry. There's one next page. Um Cedar Point trip. Cedar Point. Uh motion for the uh Cedar Point trip for seniors. I move the Board of Education approve the out-of-state day trip to Cedar Point in Sandusky by all those presented. >> This is um I just to stand correction. It's not for the seniors, it's for the juniors. It's for trio which is a program submitted to us through Wayne State. And this isn't a cost. This is just to approve them to go. >> Yeah, to to leave the state. Yes. So What types of Oh. Can we Is there any discussion? What types of things are they doing at the STEM day at Cedar Point? Well, STEM would be a really
appropriate Well, first of all, I I don't have that but um I'm going to tell you my kids always went to Cedar Point regarding roller coasters which is a physics and movement piece for that. So um Yeah, that's what it says with the I will certainly get back with you. There wasn't an agenda in there. It's focused on physics, chemistry, biology. Go ahead. Sorry. No, I just it says in there uh focus on physics, chemistry, biology, and math. So I was just curious, do they ride the roller coasters and then do the math? I think I think it said it had they had some free time um in the afternoon. The morning was pretty much designated. I was just curious on what they what they're actually doing there. I'm going to ask them to come
back and maybe give you a report. That would be very nice. >> Yes. It will be a fun report. Uh let me have a second. I did second. Yeah, we have it. Okay, then here. Okay. Ritchie? Yes. Fortress? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carries. Now we have the uh claim for Setseg motion. I move that the Board of Education approve um Setseg moving forward the settlement agreement. Support. Okay. Uh motion by Heidi, second by Monica. Roll call. Fortress? Yes. Ritchie? Yes. Becker? Yes. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Uh now we have the approval of the conference report. Uh motion carries. The conference uh from the consent agenda. The motion for the conference request. I make a motion to approve the conference request as presented. Support. All right. Motion by
Heidi and support by Monica. Uh Roll call. Fortress? Yes. Ritchie? Yes. Becker? I abstain because of familial conflict. LaFramboise? Yes. Beaton? Yes. Hinton? Yes. Motion carried. We got through all the business in about 45 minutes. Superintendent report enrollment. Which is going to take about 45 minutes. Um I have a list of items to just go through for the superintendent's report. We did that for enrollment for you. Um I would hope that uh we can give you kind of an update on both count days perhaps in the month of May um in those items. Uh just to point out to parents that our yearly calendar was approved. We'll get those on the websites and out to families as well so they can make the return. It's a little different return in this upcoming school year with
a full, you know, a week of school uh before um the holiday break. So it'll be uh three days I believe and then four days and then five days. So we think that'll be great. Um we will be canceling uh the strategic plan on April 25th due to the passing of our former board member Rosie Hammonds. Um and so her Friday will be the viewing uh for Rosie Hammonds. Saturday will be the funeral at 10:00 and there'll be a luncheon. Um we will come up with another date and I'm going to ask about that in a few minutes uh for the board for that. Um and I did this one on count you know, we we lost a a genuine amazing woman last week and um I'm glad she's at peace and with her family.
Um the Firefighter Academy is having a meeting on April 23rd from 5:00 to 7:00. So if you're listening and your child is a sophomore or even a freshman and you want to come and hear about the Firefighter Academy, please do so uh at the high school. We're pretty excited to have that. It's from 5:00 to 7:00. Advantage has their prom on Friday. So it is starting everyone. So with you also is the end of the year activity list that you've been given. Um I'm sure there'll be more added along the way. We'll have that out there but we wanted to get that out to you. Um summer school sign up uh for rising kindergarteners and rising ninth graders all the way through. It's out on the website. It's also on social media. Come and join
us parents. There's academic during the day and fun in the afternoon. Um we it's all paid for by a discovery grant by Balmer. So we're very fortunate to have this but it's a whole lot of fun. Come and join us. Uh we were given the date of June 20th or May 30th for strategic plan and I'm wondering which might work for any of you. What was it? May 30th or June 20th or he said we will have to wait till fall. May 30th is crystal clear, I have to say. Oh, we want direction now? I would like direction now so that we can slate it in and get people coming. We don't have our calendars. You want to get back to me tomorrow? Each of you text me your availability. >> Day? When is what?
Memorial Day. 25th. Week before. Week before 25th. He said June 20th. Yeah. June 20th or May 30th. I'm going to have to go with May 30th for me. Yeah, I'm going to have to go with May 30th, I think, also. That would make us very happy cuz then we would be able to still in June work on getting the plan in place for the start of the school year. Baseball districts are that day but I will miss baseball districts to do the strategic plan cuz we need to get this done. Okay. Oh, now I feel guilty because anything I'd have would not compare [laughter] with baseball districts. So I'll say May 30th. I can follow along remotely. Yes. >> [laughter] >> Game changer on that. Uh board member and administrator and administration comments. Um I just want to say thank you. I know they're not here anymore, but I absolutely love when all of our high schoolers come out
and like present correct me after we went from one shirt to the next, but that's like literally what these kids do. They they don't stop and I love that about them. They do like spend their summers learning and not like you said on the phone. So, um I appreciate them. I love when they come out. I want to congratulate all the students of the month and the teachers of the year. Um there is I know Mr. D was talking about the um all night party for the seniors coming up. There is an Amazon wish list, so um there's items on there that they're just going to do like giveaways throughout the night. So, like crock pots and bedding and mattress toppers and gift cards just so they have things for college to start off with.
So, um if you are on Facebook, I know it's on there. And then I just wanted to mention that um the House of Shamrocks is doing I believe this is like the fourth year now um a golf fundraiser for the prom on May 17th. It is probably one of my favorite days cuz I don't really have to do anything for it. They do it all. Um and it supports our students. So, if anyone can either sponsor a hole or come out and just support them. What day was it? May 17th. Thank you. That's all I got. Thank you. President Hickman, if I could um I left one piece off and that's um I put at your desk information about the regional enhancement millage proposal. So, we do have uh up on our website a link

This would be 1.5 mills of which Hazel Park would receive much more than what we're putting in given our school district and our census needs. So, it is a good thing. That money the board will determine what it would go for if that dollars come in. Most likely I would hope that we'd be putting that towards the salaries of our staff to facilitate and get them make sure that we can get them and keep them. Okay. Anybody else? I just like to add that we didn't approve the non-supervisory union, but we do plan to do so next meeting. Anybody else? I just have to remind the board members to do their self-evaluation. If you haven't done that yet,
it's all set up online. It's just a questionnaire. It's easy to do. And I put down notes to teachers. Send your child's teacher notes. Or just send a teacher a note. You don't have to have a child there. Thank them for for all their hard work and what they do. Those personal notes mean a lot more sometimes than them getting items uh from the store. And that's all I have. Motion to adjourn? I make motion to adjourn. Support board. Okay. Mr. Clerk, can I find it with this? Um it is
