Hey, congratulations to everybody once again and thanks for coming out in the cold weather. Uh that was a big effort. I mean, we've been so stuck in and this is so great. So nice to see everybody. Um, next we have the high school representative. >> Hello, my name is Preston Blae and I'm the high school representative. Um, this will be the first uh meeting we've attended since coming back from break and the first meeting for 2026. So, uh, hope it's been a great new year for everybody and I'm just going to touch on some points before a break. So, the December 18th blood

drive was a success with 40 appointments and enough blood to save up to 82 people. The next drive will be April 16th. The high school had an excellent PBIS award before going on break with a movie, food, and many games on the last day of school for 2025. With the return from break, all sports have been doing well. Powerlifting has its first meet this weekend. The end of the first semester was on Friday, January 23rd with a snow day, so that was fun. Um, after returning from the long weekend, many students began new classes. On Tuesday, January 27th, a few of our students met with a third party organization to discuss some improvements to consider in the 5-year strategic plan. Um, drama began their hot chocolate sale and it's been a hit. This weekend, some

members of the band will be attending solo ensemble to showcase their skills to professional judges for a score. Drama has been working hard on Beetlejuice with many rehearsals for both our teen and youth ensemble of over 70 members. Our show dates are Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th at the junior high. That is all. Thank you. [applause] And next we have wonderful Hoover presentation. >> Good evening. Uh first of all, uh happy board appreciation month. Thank you for all that you do. We appreciate everything, all of the efforts you put forward for our students. Um as you know, part of our district strategic plan focuses on improving student writing. So, as the Hoover team planned for this school year, we brainstormed ways to increase student engagement. And one of our ideas was uh writing

celebrations. So, for our first unit of study, um students met, classrooms met once they've So, the way that ARC works is throughout the unit, students are writing on a piece. So, they spend the whole time writing on the working on the piece, putting it together, and publishing it at the at the end. So the first unit of study students met with their grade level reading buddies and they exchanged those in the classroom. We had little snacks and so the second unit we made it a little bigger and we had our we invited our families in through for the day. So each each grade level team had a piece of the day and parents were welcome to come in. Um we writing celebrations are so important because they provide students with an authentic uh audience uh

to um to you know as they worked throughout the the unit they knew that they were going to be sharing this with their parents and their families. So it really gave them incentive to really work hard. So I have a couple of my teachers that are going to get up and talk about just the kind of that process that went through and then we're going to work on maybe having some brave readers read some of their pieces. But I'll let Mrs. Becker, go first. >> Hi, thank you for having me. Um, I'm Alicia Becker and I teach first grade at Hoover. So, our second unit that we work on is all based around wild and endangered animals. So, I'll just give you a brief overview of our process. We start by learning about all kinds

of wild and endangered animals. We learned about reptiles and amphibians, birds, and mammals. Um, we spend quite a bit of time teaching the students how to navigate non-fiction texts. They learn how to gain information from things like photographs and captions and diagrams and paying attention to labels and the table of contents, all those things that are special about non-fiction texts. Um, and after we learn all of that, we kind of narrow it down to one animal that we want to become experts on. And for us this year, that was owls. we became owl experts. Um each kind of week we would focus on a specific research question. So we focused on physical attri attributes, habitats, um the life cycle of an owl, its classification and the food chain. Um so students were actively using their

own books and readaloud books to search for all of that information and they would record it in their research books. And then comes the most challenging part of all, which is taking all of that information and actually writing about it. So, in first grade, some of our major focuses are staying on topic and writing complete sentences, um, keeping your writing factual. These are non-fiction books that they're writing. So, um, you know, owls are cute. Yes, they are. but they learn that when they're writing a non-fiction text that they present factual information. Um, and then on top of that, just all the foundational writing skills that they are still mastering like um letter formation and line placement and spacing. And so writing at a first grade level is really challenging for them. And um they worked

so hard. So, um, I have one of my students here that truly became an owl expert and she loved every second of doing it. Um, this is Aurora Donnelly and she wrote a fantastic book that I think Mrs. Deus is going to read for her. Is that right? >> You would rather read me. >> You do? Oh my gosh. Okay, good. Come here. Get over there. Ready? Owls are >> Owls are birds. >> Here, why don't I hold it up here? >> Okay, >> we didn't here. How about if I >> daddy? >> He's a doll guy. >> Turn. Turn. >> Stand. >> All right. I'll be your holder. Okay. >> All right. Ready? Well, first, hold on. Read your title. >> All About Owls by Aurora. Owls are birds. Owls have big eyes. Owls

have claws. Owls have beaks. Owls have two wings. Owls live in many different habitats. Some owls live in tundras. Some owls live in deserts. [snorts] Owls eat meat, so they are carnivores. Owls eat mice and owls eat lizards and owls eat bunnies. Foxes eat owls and wolves eat owls. >> Owls hatch from eggs. When a owl is born, they are fluffy. When owls grow up, they lose feathers and fluff lose their fluff and grow and grow flying feathers. Owl. Here are some fun facts about owls. Owls have three eyelids on each eye. Owls can turn their head around >> 270°. degrees. I will spit out pellets made out of fur [snorts] and >> bones and fur. Owls are camouflage and blend with trees. [applause] And Mrs. Becker teaches first grade, you guys. All right. Miss

Kletcha is going to talk about her fifth grade project. >> Hi, my name is Rachel Kletcha. Thank you for having me. This is my first year teaching fifth grade at Hoover Elementary, switching from third grade. So in our second unit we talked about the ecosystem and students got a chance to learn new facts about different ecosystem rainforests, deserts and different places and then they got to choose who they wanted to work with in a group. First they worked independently and then they collaborated together at the end to um talk about the different topics that they needed to. So one of the topics was location and climate. We talked about like where is it located? What's the temperature like? what biome is it located in producers and consumers. We also talked about decomposers but for our

topic they just focused mostly on producers and consumers. They talked about the different food web and which animals were like their main ones and then which one was the tertiary consumer. Um we also talked about threats to their different ecosystem and ways that they could help save their r or save their ecosystem, excuse me. And then some fun facts. So the students got a chance to add some fun facts about their ecosystem. And then we did a slideshow. So students got to make it more unique in their group and they got to add pictures. They got to add different features. Some of them added pictures of themselves at the end as the as their team members. So it was just really nice to see them really work together and collaborate on this unit and to

put it together. So I have two of my students here. One's a little shy now. That's okay. So, we have Jasper who's going to share just two pages of his in Orlando's um presentation on their ecosystem. >> Ecos me and Orlando had the rainforest ecosystem and I will be reading what the threats are to it and the biome and climate. The rainforest is found in the in the forest ecosystem characterized by high rainfall and high temperatures. The temperature in the rainforest ranges anywhere from 68° to 82° F. The precipitation is anywhere from 74 to 394 in of rain in the rainforest per year. I think some threats to the rainforest are deforestation caused by soy soy farming and wildfires caused by discarded cigarette butts are and both of these are severe threats to the rainforest.

technology, reforestation laws, and fuel reduction are in place to keep the rainforest alive. Thank you. >> Great job. Thank you so much. And I think Brad has a little slideshow. The the families loved it. They they went around. Everybody did a little bit different, but I think you'll see from the video um just how much fun everybody had. And we're looking forward to a next celebration. >> [music] [music] >> Hey, hey, hey. >> [music] >> Hey, [music] [music] I want Heat. [music] Heat. [music] Heat. [music] Heat. Heat. Heat. [music] [music] >> [music] >> Heat. Heat. [music] >> [music] >> So, thank you so much for allowing us to share our hard work with you. I want to thank my teachers, Miss Kletcha and Mrs. Becker and our students, Aurora uh and Jasper and Orlando for

coming and the parents for bringing you. Thank you so much. Have a great evening. Thanks. [applause] Thank you for the presentation and it was nice to hear the students reading. It's that is a awesome accomplishment and to actually hear hear them reading and the amount of work that you talked about that's put into that. I appreciate um your presentation and your work your hard work every day. Thank you. >> Next is public comment. If anybody's wishing to speak, there's a paper to fill out on the table. And seeing no one, uh, we'll move on to approval of the consent [clears throat] agenda. I'm I move that we approve the consent agenda with moving item D, conference requests, to new business, as item BB. >> So far, Okay. Motion by uh Nate and support by April

to move conferences to we have a public >> BD. Okay. Go back. >> Okay. Um any any objection? Roll call. >> April. >> Yes. Payton, >> yes. >> Fox, >> yes. Uh motion carries to to move that uh later in the agenda. Uh we're going to go back to the uh public comment. I do I should have waited a few minutes to to see if somebody wanted to speak. I'm sorry. I have Sharon Heath and Jean uh Bart Bartis. >> Yes. Michigan Education Justice Coalition. >> Yes. Um I apologize that Sharon hasn't made it here yet. I didn't realize that you guys took public comments first. So many boards take them last. So um that's probably why she hasn't rushed here. But anyway, I will speak as well as I can about a ballot initiative

that we've been on the streets um gathering signatures for and we're just reaching out trying to inform the boards and the school districts about this. >> We have a second time comment at the end of the agenda if you want it to leave. >> You know what I think I think that would be fine and that way Sharon will be here and we can both go together. >> Okay. Thank you. Yes. >> She want to miss it. >> Um I think this should move right along. >> Um under new business, the first new business is the meeting dates for the board of education. >> I move that the board of education approve the 2026 board of education meeting dates. >> Support by Darren support by April. Any discussion? It's not that big of a deal.

Um, but next Monday I will probably be a little bit late. >> Yes, >> I'll be here a little bit late. I know it's only a committee of the whole, but >> Okay. >> All right. Thank you for that. >> Roll call. >> Fox, >> yes. >> Uh, yes. Motion carries. Uh, 50. The next is MASB delegates to the conference in um October. that's in Lancing and I didn't appoint anybody and anyone here tonight any board members want to be the delegate. [clears throat] This is justformational and you uh can let me know later or if you're interested. >> You say it's in Lansing. >> Mhm. >> Do we know the exact date? >> I don't have it with me though. >> It's usually like the second week I believe. I would be interested. I

just need to figure out all the dates. >> We can choose an alternate just in case, right? >> Yes. >> October 14th through the 18th. >> October 14th >> through the 18th. Yes. >> Okay. So, all right. We're going to have Monica and um we can bring it back at the next meeting for the alternate unless somebody here wants to be the alternate. All right. Um moving on. These are justformational. No voting. youth assistance representatives. It's going to be myself and Debbie because we're on the committee. You're always welcome to attend the meetings. It's not closed. It's open to anyone that wants to attend. Um, Hazel Park Museum representative Darren agreed. He he would still be that representative if everyone here agrees. And next hearing nothing, I guess everyone agrees. Darren, um, best my kids

resolution. Would you please read that, April? That was very interesting. >> Do I have it? Yeah, I do. Okay. Sorry, I didn't take a look at this earlier. I didn't. Sorry. Okay. Um resolution to support and endorse the invest in my kids proposal. Whereas the board of education of the Hazel Park School District acknowledges that Michigan's public schools are the cornerstone of our communities and the foundation of our children's future. And whereas the board of education of the Hazel Park School District believes strong public schools attract families, boost property values, and strengthen the general workforce benefiting everyone. And whereas Michigan's public schools are underfunded by nearly four by $4.5 billion. And more than threequarters of all Michigan public school students attend schools and districts that are over $2,000 per pupil below adequacy. Whereas funding for

Michigan school aid fund has significantly discre decreased over the last two decades. And between 2015 and 2022 seven studies found Michigan does not provide enough money for the state's public schools. And whereas in the 2021 2022 school year, Michigan offered the lowest starting teacher salary in the Great Lakes region. And whereas the top 1% earners in Michigan pay lower effective tax rate than everyday people than everyday people pay. And whereas the lifetime earnings of Michigan's current K through2 students could increase by 27 billion if their educational achievement matched the national average. And whereas a 10% increase in per pupil spending improved lowincome students graduation rates by 7 percentage points and their adult hourly wages by 13%. Therefore, be it resolved that the Hazel Park School District Board of Education hereby endorses the Invest in My

Kids proposed amendment to the Michigan Constitution to impose a 5% fair share sir charge on annual taxable income over $1 million for joint filers and over $500,000 for single filers to raise funds for career and technical education, reducing class size, and attracting and retaining educators in public schools across the state. and is subject to an annual audit. >> Oh, thank you. I have a motion to accept the resolution. >> I move the board of education approve the resolution for invest in my kids as presented. >> I'll second the motion. >> All right. Motion by Monica, second by Darren to accept the resolution. Roll call, please. >> Yes. >> Fox, >> Yes. I should have asked for discussion. Sorry. Um, >> we talked about it at the committee. >> At the committee. Yeah. So, um, motion

carries 5 to zero. Super Oh, no. Letter of HPA addition schedule B. Do you want to comment on this? Uh, Dr. Wilcox, it's uh, this is new. >> Do you want to move it first? >> It's going to contract. Move it first. >> You want to move it first? >> We have it as anformational item. Do we need to make a motion? >> Oh, no. It's It should be made a motion. >> All right. I move the board of education approve the HPA edition to schedule B as presented. >> Support. >> You ready? >> All right. Motion by April. Support by Monica. And now we're ready. So, we uh have been working for some time on discussing bringing uh boys volleyball um as it is an official sport this season as well as powerlifting um

into our contract as well as uh the the agreement also adds if there's a JV or a freshman volleyball team, they'll be added just like the girls uh volleyball uh is. >> Okay. Any discussion? >> And the HBA has already agreed to this. I'm guessing based on the signature is just waiting for your approval. >> Okay. Uh roll call. >> Yes. >> Becker, >> yes. >> Fox, >> Yes. Motion carries five to zero. Superintendent contract amendment. >> I move the board of education approve the amendment to the superintendent contract as presented. >> Support. >> Motion by Monica. support by Nate to uh accept the superintendent contract amendment. Um roll call. >> Yes. >> Um we didn't have discussion. >> Okay. Go ahead. >> Go ahead. We can do discussion. >> Um I just am curious.

So, and bear with me because I'm new this year. Traditionally, how have we gone about annually? Uh, you know, we don't generally just amend the contract or how do we go about this process? >> We do amend the contract on a yearly basis because multi-year salary increases haven't been put in place. And so this um amendment is because we didn't do a salary increase for me last spring for this school year. So this is in rears. This does not um give us multi-year. Different superintendent contracts do it in different ways. Uh it is why we asked for a multi-year contract with the remainder of my contract. Really doesn't change the language just when we do it because of the OS situation that could potentially harm me uh in the future. Anybody else? >> And could

you go over? So, we're changing in the name, which rightfully so, >> please. >> And then we're changing there's some pieces in there that actually protects the board of education. >> And then, um, >> can we talk about it? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Please. >> So, it changes my eval it changes my evaluation from uh July 1st to June to be January to December. Thus us we couldn't do that. We didn't do that in a timely manner and so that would change and thus then potentially the approval of um my goals. Um it also changes the new change in the law removes highly effective for teachers all educators. So it takes it to effective which is what it is now. Um, and then it also uh sets in there the evaluation process that if

the superintendent, the new rule is is that the superintendent has to be able to appeal. And oftentimes you appeal that to the appellet court. This appeals directly to the board and does not leave me with anything other than the board gives me a veil. If I don't like it, I can appeal it to the board and then the board makes the decision. So, this is a little different than the law is, but um that is Clark Hills advice to also protect us from not having unduly financial um obligations. And then it just adds last year's salary. So, my contract remains through 2029 and each year you'll have to amend it with the process that we're going forward with. >> Okay. So, um I want to comment that to Mr. Becker's question. Sometimes it was connected

to the evaluation. You have the evaluation and then you get the the raise. Sometimes it was given at other times, not at the evaluation time. And the recommendation on the salary schedule says eligible for increases on a yearly basis pending their individual performance and the district financial conditions. So um that's that's all I have to say. Do you have anything else? >> So going forward the level one, level two, level three. >> So next year it goes forward or we have to go through the same amendment process. >> We have to go through the same amendment process because you're not approving me more than the end of this year. So, um I would hope that you do that July 1st instead of waiting till December because it also has different tax uh obligations on me

when we backfill uh the salary piece. >> Okay, >> answer my questions. Thank you. >> Okay, ready? >> Roll call. >> Richie, >> yes. >> Becker, >> yes. >> Fox, >> yes. And then uh >> no motion carries. Four to one. I mean five. Yeah, four to one. >> Yeah, there's only five of us. >> Four to one. There's only five of us. Superintendent goals. Motion. >> I move the board of education to approve the superintendent goals as presented. >> Second. >> Oh, motion by Monica. Second by April. Any further discussion? We've discussed this last week. Questions? Okay, roll call. They haven't. This is not one that we opted to change from committee of the whole to this week. Right. Correct. >> Right. Okay. I didn't remember which if we changed them both or just

one. >> Sorry about that. I'm ready. >> Yes. >> Fox. >> Yes. Motion carries. 50. Next. Student interns. Uh motion, please. I move the board of education approve the use of student help for the technology buildings and grounds athletics communications and drama departments as listed. >> Support. >> All right. Motion by Monica. Support by April. Any discussion? >> Okay. Roll call. >> Yes. >> Becker. >> Yes. >> Fox. >> Yes. Motion carries 5. Athletic uh spring sports. I have a motion. >> I move the board of education approve the winter sports purchases not to exceed $26,800 as presented >> spring but otherwise support. >> It does say winter motion by Monica support by April. Any discussion? >> I do. I did ask at committee of the whole about the boys volleyball jerseys because I know

that they were purchased last year and I don't have an answer and so I am struggling to say yes to this for that reason. I apologize for that. That that that got by me. Could you ask the question and maybe our athletic director can answer this? >> Last year they had jerseys purchased for them. So I'm just curious why we're purchasing new jerseys. >> They're not J. [clears throat] We got like 40 kids signed up for >> Thank you. >> Okay. Thank you. >> All right. Roll call. >> Wait, I I have a question. Is this a budgeted item? Is this in the budget or is it has to be put in now that we're doing? >> Um there's something in the budget for it. I can't say it'll be that exact amount. >> All

right. But >> so it's just really we'll be adjusting to the actual >> just wanted to make sure. >> Thank you. >> No, I'm ready. >> Okay. Roll call. >> Yes. Motion carries 5 to zero. Conference requests over $500. Motion, please. >> I move that the board of education approved the conference request over $500 as presented. >> Support move by Darren, support by Monica to approve these conferences. And I I have a question. Who are the people? Is this nonviolent crisis intervention renewal? Are these are these teachers in our buildings? I don't know who they were. Social workers. >> So, their ancillary staff currently uh one of them is a social worker and two of them are teachers of students with autism and they teach CPI. So, the crisis prevention. That's the safety class of

working with with students that can become very disregulated. Um keeping them safe and the staff safe. >> Perfect. Thank you. I'm glad they're able to go. Now we need roll call. Wait, I do have a question just to make sure that we approve the right amount. We only have two staff in our memo. >> Two staff. So, we have two trainers. They train everyone else. >> Okay. I just wanted to make sure because you said one social worker, two teachers. I got nervous that we were leaving. One of them's all set. >> We're Okay. >> Yeah. >> I didn't want somebody to like not get to register because we missed him. >> That's a great question. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Good question. >> Okay. Roll call. >> Yes. Yes. Becker, >> Yes. Motion carries five

to zero. District policies action item on the first reading. >> I move that the board of education approve the first reading of the district policies as presented. >> Support. Okay. Motion by Darren, support by Monica. Any discussion? Roll call. >> Yes. Motion carries. 5-0. Uh, Chromebook purchase. >> I move that the board of education approve the technology purchase of Chromebooks to address the areas of the strategic plan. >> Support. >> Okay. A motion by Darren, support by Monica to approve the Chromebook purchase $34,900. >> Would you like a discussion on this one since it didn't come to the home? >> I didn't think it came to >> It did not. And I apologize. Since the time that we met, um it was brought to my attention that we didn't have enough Chromebooks for um some

of our high school kids because of the amount of ones that are broken in the time that they're coming back. And so this is a little more than what we should think we should have. So we have extra ones always available when they're broken. Uh no kid should be without a Chromebook. >> Agreed. >> Roll call. >> Fox. >> Yes. >> Becker. >> Sorry. Yes. >> Yes. Motion carries. 5-0. Sinking fund projects. Action item. I move the board of education approve the architect fees as presented. >> Support. >> Okay. Motion by Monica. Support by Nate. Any discussion? >> Yes. I'd like to share uh we felt that it was important even though these will be built into the total cost to put those fees out here. Um the two items right now that we're looking

at or three the restroom renovations and the cross corridor doors um at the high school replacing where the gates used to be as well as um the estimate um for invests field um as well and then they will be doing for free uh designing uh a park around Longfellow uh to submit for a grant. I I have a question. >> I'm sorry that I didn't bring this up at the committee as a whole, but I remember that the past board before this board was working on something about getting the Jardan bathrooms uh remodeled. Whatever happened to that? >> That was would have been done in the bond. So those um would have been done in the bond and uh at this point in time the only bathrooms that we were looking at and that you

guys approved to go out to RFP was one set one for here, one for there. That would be something that we would look at as we decide the building usage. And we also went for a remodel uh of the building which was approved by the P8 fund. It was approved by the special ed fund and denied by the uh superintendent of the ISTD at that point in time. Oh, that's where it land because I remember Don Rice working on that very hard to get that taken care of and it was through Oakland schools and they Okay, >> I think our building assessment will give us an idea about the direction we need to go. >> Yes, that that Thank you. >> You're welcome. >> That helps. So, this is proposed fee. Clark construction estimates a

total project cost of $342,546. is said that's all here in this report. >> This is the as though Clark came in and did an estimate. >> So that we in all of them. They also estimated the welding room which came in at a half a million dollars. So that was removed at this point in time >> for just that room because you have to do filtration and some other things as well. So we are bringing in front of you. They give an estimate of the cost to make sure that's coverable and then once this is approved they will go out to bid. It probably won't be done by August. So, we might be able to make some determinations of other things to do with the scing fund andor after the building comes in, we just

push those dollars to the next year. >> And those cross quarter doors at the high school are the ones that we talked about that were um that were recommended for fire safety as well. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> I we had so many conversations I didn't I didn't remember where they were. >> So, I have the the scing fun report from December. We have 1,418,14549. It says available balance, >> correct? >> Okay. [clears throat] I I'm just concerned we're doing getting our roof scanned. We know we have roof problems. We just had a boiler problem at Web Jardan that I'm really concerned about that amount of money that >> it's not something we need right now. We well um this was what we brought to you in the three-year plan that we felt we did

need. We removed the um welding room though we feel we really need that because it's a great program and maybe we'll come up with some funding other places but we do feel those doors are a safety issue and that we need to do them and the bathrooms are horrible at those two places as well. So it's the next step moving in and on the three-year plan that the board approved it goes one set at a time. the building assessment and the roof assessment will give us a good idea of when we look at next year and we reook at our three-year plan what we need to do as well as the community input from the strategic plan. >> Okay. Anybody else? Uh roll call. >> Yes. >> I'm not comfortable. I got to say no.

Four to one. I know we need those bathrooms. I know we need those doors, but maybe the next time. Uh, board compensation. Motion for the $40 a month for board members. >> I move the board of education approve the continuation of a $40 per month stipen for board members. >> I second the motion. >> All right. Motion by Nate, support by Darren for the compensation. Any discussion on it? All right. Roll call. >> Gartner, >> yes. >> Uh, yes. Motion carries. 5 Z. Uh, community coalition statement. I move the board of education approve the mid-year performance stipen of 2500 for the HBCC executive director with the remaining portion of $7,725 to be dispersed on July 31st 2026 upon successful completion of goals and strategic actions. >> Support motion by Monica support by April for the

community coalition stipen. Is there any discussion? I don't have discussion but just as a reminder um for the public after our conversation at community as of the whole that this is a grant-f funed position and this is a a normal part of her compensation package. So this is something that was agreed to >> technically in the past. >> Thank you for that. I was I should be asking for discussion and comments since the discussion was last week. We could have comments. Well, it it feels like it was last week, but it was really like a month ago because we [laughter] had >> That's I think that's why we're all confused about voting because we talked about this all >> true. Yes. >> Okay. Roll. >> Yes. >> Becker, >> Yes. Motion carries 5. Uh, yonder

pouches. I move the board of education approve the purchase of yonder pouches in the amount of $29,610 for Hazel Park Junior High and Hazel Park High School. >> Is there support? >> I second. >> Okay. Motion by Nate and support by Darren for the pouches comments. Um, again, this one is coming out of a grant, >> just so the public knows >> that. Yeah. And the fact that the legislation just passed that law, so we're kind of bound to do this. So, >> when will this be implemented? >> March 1st. >> Thank you. >> So, we will be having some letters go out to parents. Parents will have an opportunity to come and listen uh to understand the structure. We talked about it today in the safety meeting about some additional ideas on um how

to enclose those pouches at the end of the day and and lock them in case people are in the building. Um I can tell you every day there's reasons why this is important to do for our kids. Um today uh would be absolutely one of those. >> And if I may comment um being on the discipline committee that I'm on, it seems like it actually is working very well for the advantage program. um because the kids are like really they're for it. They they want it they want to do that. Um it's it's less a distraction for them. So, um I think it's going to be a good thing for everyone, especially our staff and the teachers. >> And to go with what Mr. Becker said, we are like this close from the governor signing

it. So, we're just getting ahead of the game. >> Yes, we are. Yep. in the we didn't have the um the invoice estimate. I'm not sure which this is at committee of the whole in the implementation style. In the invoice, it says that the style of pouch is all day take-home. >> We will not be taking them home. >> Okay, that's just like the the verbiage from the company, not Okay. that I thought I I heard that we weren't taking them home, so that threw me off, but if it's just the company's verbage. And then the 15% buffer, is that something that they offer that um replaces broken or >> Go ahead, Dr. D. >> Are you talking about the that additional amount or are you talking about? >> Yeah, it says 15% buffer of

pouches. I didn't know if that was like something that they build in to replace any that are lost or broken or what that it their their invoice uses like I think their own technical jargon. So it's hard to know what they mean. >> Yes, there there are some additional cultures built in because again you know something might happen. We hope not but they may. And then in addition to that just uh for the public and to remind the board because we purchased for both schools they gave us a 15% reduction in the overall cost. I also just from committee of the whole to want public to know that we are getting certain bags too for children with diabetes or >> correct >> other medical conditions. Correct. >> Absolutely. >> And the other question is is

the the rules for the students use um what happens if they destroy them? Will that be in the new student handbook? >> Yes, it'll be in the new student handbook and also sent out and it'll be okay. Systemic across the district. Okay, just like it is at Advantage. >> All right, those are great questions and comments. Uh, roll call. >> Becker, >> yes. >> Fox, >> yes. >> Uh, yes. Motion carries 5-0. Next is summer school proposal. >> I move the board of education approve the early childhood grade 12 summer programming as presented. >> Support. Motion by Monday, support by April. Any discussion here? Comments? >> President Hinton, may I add one positive. Uh we were notified by um Bulmer that they are now going to cover the kindergarten program. So there's a portion in

there, I think it's about $53,000. We will get dollars to cover that as well. >> Wonderful. >> The kindergarten readiness goes the kindergarten readiness. >> Wonderful. >> Thank you to Bulmer. we need to send them flowers or something. They just keep really helping us. >> I think we give a lot to them as well with uh some of the stuff that we do. So, we're really fortunate to give back to them as well. But we are grateful for they make a difference for our kids every day. >> Okay. Roll call. Renee, >> yes. >> Fox, >> Yes. Motion carries. 50 facility assessment. >> I move the board of education approve moving forward with a comprehensive facility assessment of all Hazel Park schools facilities not to exceed $45,000 plus $16,500 for the educational adequacy audit as

presented. >> Second the motion to it. >> All right, give me the next one. >> I was doing pretty good. motion by April 2nd by Monica. [snorts] Comments, questions. Okay. Roll call. >> Yes. >> Uh, yes. Motion carries. 5 Z transport transportation contract >> renewal. >> I move the board of education approve the purchase of transport annual license in the amount of $5,856. support us. >> All right. Motion by Monica, support by Nate. Um, any any questions, comments? All right. Roll call, please. >> Yes. >> Becker, >> Yes. Motion carries 5. Audit request for proposal. I move the board of education approve to release the audit services RFP in order to solicit proposals and return to the board with the recommended firm for approval. >> Support all right motion by Monica, support by Nate for

the audit request RFPs uh roll call. I I do have one question just very quickly only because we didn't our our meetings were postponed and the proposals were scheduled to be due on February 27th. Are we going to push that back because we're voting two weeks late? >> No. Okay. Just wondered >> if they can do it. >> But we did the RFP release date differently. Yes. >> All right. I just didn't know if we were going to give them more time. But if we're not, fine by me. >> Okay. Roll 14. >> Yes. Yes. >> Yes. >> Uh, yes. Motion carries. 50. Metal detectors for the junior high. >> I move the board of education approve the purchase of a metal detector at a cost not to exceed $23,725 as presented. >> Board. Okay.

Motion by Monica, second by April. Any comments, discussion? >> Just that this will additionally come out of the safety fund dollars that we accepted from the state. Thank you. >> All right. Roll call. >> Richie, >> yes. >> Fox, >> Yes. Motion carries. 50. Thermographic scans. >> I move the board of education approve the thermographic scans at a cost not to exceed 21,000 as presented. >> I second a motion. >> Okay. Motion by Monica and support by Darren. Do you want to say something about that? >> Sure. This will be the second time we've had the thermal scans done. Um the costs have gone up significantly and so I asked him to actually I think it was 14,000 the first time we did it uh 5 years ago. I asked to get several bids um

from the company and the other ones were more. So 21 is is is good. Um they were exceptionally more. Uh so we have one more bid coming in. We'll see how that comes out. But it so it should be a not to exceed. This will help us look at our roofs to see if they've gotten worse or some of the things that we've done has helped it. We have to wait until the snow's off and we get a little warmer so that the ice is gone and we can see how the water is pooling or hopefully not pulling on our roofs. This is also out of the sinking fund. >> That's what I was looking for. >> Yes. Sorry. >> Sinking fund. Yep. It's on there. All right. Uh roll call. Yes, >> yes. >>

Uh, yes. Uh, motion carries 50 2026 rate action item. >> I move the board of education approve the winning rate bid to Delta Network Services at a cost not to exceed $77,000. Support. >> Okay. Motion by Mon I mean motion by April, support by Monica. discussion >> just that um you approved this R RFP to go out. We've received it back. It can't be done till April and hopefully it'll fix some of the concerns that we're seeing with our internet. >> Okay, roll call. >> Beaten, >> yes. >> Becker, >> yes. >> Fox, >> Yes. Motion carries 5. NSBA advocacy institute. Uh need a motion. >> I move that the board of education approved the conf what? >> Oh, a conference request for the NSBA advocacy institution at a cost of 2366. That's presented. >>

All right. Motion by Darren, support by Nate. Um the 2366 is minus the 500 from uh Oakland schools. So it's 1,866 I think. Anyway, um roll call. >> And that's where Debbie is right now. >> Yes. [clears throat] >> Fox. >> Yes. And >> yes. Motion carries 5. Student reinstatement action item. >> I move the board of education approve these students to reenter his park schools as presented. >> I second the motion. >> All right. Motion by Monica. Support by Darren. Roll call. >> Yes. [snorts] >> Yes. Motion carries 50. Student discipline action item. I move the board of education approve the student discipline as presented. >> A second >> motion by Monica, second by Darren. Roll call. >> Yes. Motion carries. 5. Is this where we >> Yes. >> Because I don't have >>

I will. >> Okay. And this is from our consent agenda of the conferences. >> I move board of education approve the conference request as presented. >> I second. >> Okay. Motion by Monica, second by Darren for conferences for our staff. Um, roll call. >> Yes. Becker. >> Uh, I abstain for familial conflict. >> Yes. Motion carries. Uh, four to one. Now, can I go ahead and do public? It's It's request for future items and calendar dates. I guess we could quickly do that and then it's public comment. Anybody have um requests? I don't have the >> calendar dates. >> That shouldn't be on there. We already approved calendar dates. We're good. >> We're good with that. >> Yeah. Well, we have one. We have a meeting next week and then I was looking today that

we're on break the 16th with our break. So, that's our normal date, but it'll be the 23rd. Okay. Now we have Sharon and Jean, you know, and you ladies um state where you're from instead of me reading where you're from. And who's which one's Jean and which one's Sharon? >> I'm Sharon Heading Education Justice Coalition. >> I'm Jean Bis from Invest in My Kids. And so we've been working very hard together um on the ballot initiative to get the signatures and we really want to say thank you so much for endorsing. We greatly appreciate the work that Hazel Park is doing, the board is doing, superintendent is doing, community schools is doing. We've been able to work um with you all a little bit and we want to keep working with you all because you're

very embracing to us. Um, what we try to do is just have healthy and healing schools and communities and we love to see that Hazel Park is a healing community and has some really great teachers and healthy schools. So, we love to see that and great parents as well. Um, we still have a lot of work to do. We have over 100,000 signatures, but we need over 500,000. So, we still need a lot of folks to get on board as you have done tonight. And so we really would like to know um well Gina will talk a little bit more about what we'd like to know but also we do have a state of education um virtual town hall coming up on Wednesday and so we have um attorney general Nestle will be speaking and

we also have your own April Been will be speaking so please turn out for that and >> [clears throat] >> um also if anyone is interested in being a part of collecting or being a part of investing my kids further you can go go to invest inmykids.org and sign up for that. And then I'll let Jean share a little more too. >> Thank I will reiterate what Sharon said. Thank you very much. Thank you for partnering uh with us and approving this. And um what we've been doing in some of the schools is partnering with the PTAs and reaching out to the different PTA presidents from the schools. like in Farmington, we're doing a um booth at their freshman orientation to allow people an opportunity. So, that's what I'm here to say. If there's any

way um [snorts] you can give me that information or if you have that information available on your websites, I can just start reaching out. let them know that the board has endorsed this and that we're here to either support by giving them petitions to collect signatures or to collect the signatures theirelves. I um in this South Oakland between Sharon and I, we probably have a team of about 12 people who are willing and able and would love to, you know, participate in any events that you would welcome us into to collect signatures. >> Thank you. There's a deadline for all those signatures you made. >> Is there a I'm sorry I didn't hear. >> Deadline. >> Oh, we are collecting up until most likely March. We may look to extend based on how many we

can get and we have like a big push right now to get more so we can keep going because we would we want this to be passed so we can get the funding in 2027 and have it on the ballot for 2026. >> Okay. Well, thank you. >> Thank you so much. >> You're coming Saturday, right? >> Oh, absolutely. Yes, we'll be there. And then yeah, also if you can let us know like where it is okay for us to collect. I do have my um sheets with me tonight, but we want to make sure we're wherever we can be. So, thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> All right. I need a motion for close session. Um, I make a motion to recess into close session 8C for strategy and negotiation sess sessions

connected with the negotiation of a collective bargaining unit agreement. If either negotiating party requests a closed hearing. Wait, I read the wrong thing. Let me start again. I apologize. I move the board of education recess into close session 8C for strategy and negotiation sessions connected with the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement if either negotiating party request a close hearing >> support. I move by Nate support by monitor to go into close session. >> Could you read that one more time? [laughter] Yes. >> Yes. >> Okay. Let's get them. Okay, we need a motion. >> We just need to wait. Crazy crazy crazy day. We go from humble. >> Need a motion to call the meeting back to order. >> I make a motion to reenter the open session of the meeting. >> I'll second.

>> Okay. Motion >> by April second by to reconvene our meeting. Roll call. >> Yes. Yes. >> Yes. Motion carries 5. Potential motion coming out of pro session. Somebody go ahead. I move the board of education approve the item discussed in close session as presented in close session. >> Okay. Is there a second? >> Support. >> All right. Motion by Nate and second by Monica. >> I have a question. Uh, do we need to be more specific on that or >> I might suggest that uh you amend your motion to I approve theou with the union uh for the 2526 middle school schedule prep. >> There we go. I amend my motion to say that I that I move the board of education approve theou with the union for the 26 middle school prep. >>

0702526 middle school prep. >> 2526 middle school prep. >> I still support. >> Okay. >> You're a better man than I. That's why I didn't make the motion. >> Great job. Thank you. Now we can vote. Uh, roll call. >> Becker, >> Yes. Motion carries. 5 Z. Superintendent report enrollment. >> Well, actually, I'm going to begin with the special educa or the board of education recognition. It is local school board recognition month last week and last month, but don't think that we forgot. So, I would like to read into this. um the state board of education our resolution for local school board member recognition month. Whereas providing the education of Michigan schools children is a fundamental duty of state government as stated in article 8 section two of the Michigan Constitution of 1963. And whereas

the education of our youth is the foundation upon which economic, social, and intellectual capital of our state is built. And whereas Hazel Park School Board plays an important and vital role in a representative democracy and decisions made by local boards of education directly influence instruction in Michigan's public schools. And whereas the Hazel Park board members contribute hundreds of hours each year lending their districts whether it's by deliberating important decisions about curriculum, adopting policies, hiring top-notch personnel and administrators, listening to staff, parents and students concerns, or recognizing outstanding programs. Board members always keep their eye on the goal of student achievement. And whereas these decisions affect the present and future lives of our children and also set a direction to prepare all students to be competitive in local, state, national, and global knowledge and economy. And

whereas local board members are exceptional people who tackle the enormous jobs of governing school districts and demonstrate to the students they serve the high character of civic duty and responsibility that all citizens should engage. And whereas a [clears throat] Hazel Park school board member recognition month provides an opportunity to build strong relations between thousands of men and women who champion the cause of public education as board members, their schools, and the community they serve. Now there, let it be resolved that the Hazel Park community recognizes the contributions of the Hazel Park Board of Education to the academic behavior and mental health of public school students and express its sincerest appreciation to our board members for their focus on the well-being and achievement of children throughout our district. And be it finally resolved that the Hazel

Park School Board of Education declares January 2026 as local school board recognition month and encourages the Hazel Park staff to appropriately recognize our dedicated local school board members. And it's okay to do it in February. I do want to thank you guys. It is it is not easy to be a school board member. You're pulled in so many ways, but your dedication of showing up even when it hurts is con is appreciated. >> Thank you, Dr. Wilox. That was very nice. >> Very nice. And u I do have enrollment in here. I also want to remember that next Wednesday is kelp day for February. So that's coming along. Again, we're currently involved in having our audit completed by uh the ISD. Um, and then we have your fundraisers on here as well that we continue.

I do want to take a moment and say, wow, today our students of Hoover demonstrated the hard work that the science of reading and ARC is bringing to Hazel Park schools. I have goosebumps when they were reading and I thought when our little first grader read that book, I was going to come to tears like how articulate and the vocabulary that's being done. And that really is because of the dollars that we've invested to our teachers to support them to support our kids in changing the way that we look at reading. And we are now through 10th grade, correct? Uh with the science of reading and way out there and ahead of the games and we're really really proud and we're seeing it. We're seeing it happen and we will continue to work hard. So

kudos to all of our teachers, to our reading coaches, to the teaching and learning um group, and to all of you for approving us to step out there and get going on the science of reading. So, thank you. Um I also want to express my gratitude to Oakland County and to Balmer Group for working with us under the community schools. Um, if you didn't get a chance to see the publicity that we had at our Longfellow um, talking about um, Oakland Connects and I hear that if I say Oakland Connects five times that, um, that they'll give me a prize. Oakland Connects, Oakland Connects, Oakland Connects, Oakland Connects. Um, because that is the amazing connection that's happening between Oakland County, Southfield, and us as we look at community schools, but we also wrap the families

as well. And we had some really difficult conversations today about some students that need that. And it's really this gives us an opportunity to wrap our families. We had a great conversation today with Oakland 80. Um and we will have Michigan Works coming to visit our school. Fern clinic that's coming next week hopefully to finalize some operations. Um we're going to get some active fun activities going on. Um, and hopefully we'll also get our outside grounds done through a grant uh to make that more of a community-based with um not only perhaps a pavilion with some grills out there as well, but um some other areas to play splash pad. >> Oh, splash pad too, but to play pickle ball. >> Pickle ball. Yes. Thank you. I I always want to say botchi ball, but

pickle ball as well out there. Um, so we're really hoping that we can score big on making that a really good community place for everybody. So, we're super excited and it looks beautiful. >> Um, our ADK winner for January um, is Katherine Ilich from Webster. She'll get $50, uh, towards uh, support for innovative classrooms. Um, we encourage our teachers to continue. I already know the February one, but I will save that to the February board meeting. Um, holiday baskets. The holiday basket committee was able to help 84 families and 202 children this year with their contributions to the staff in the community. That was really always fantastic and it warms my heart. I love that day when we hand out those to them. I'm always with the hats and gloves with a few of my

friends and the hugs that we get and the love that we get. They were missing Rocky this year, but I told them that I would bring back next year to that. We also had an amazing Amazon air donation. So, thank you Amazon for $10,000 with the school supplies that um uh we had a bunch of people that was able to unpack that for us while I was off visiting my grandson and we got that out in social media today to say thank you and those supplies were given out to the teachers and delivered to the building. So, we're super excited. But, um just that is great. I want to remind everybody that this Wednesday is kindergarten openhouse from 6:00 to 7:00 at all of our schools. These events will happen in each of our buildings

at Hoover Web and United Oaks and there will be a second one later on this year. But come on out from 6:00 to 7:00. Come out and see our schools and come and join and see our amazing teachers and administrators. This Saturday we have two exciting things going on. We have uh heart health checks at the high school from 9 to 11. Bring your child forward and get their healthy heart checked. Um and then also the resource fair and chili cookoff is at Hazel Park Junior High and we have all kinds of resources that are available from Care of South Eastern Community Housing Network, DTE, Hazel Park Community Coalition, Hazel Park Fire Department, Hazel Park Police Department, Hazel Park Lions, Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union, Hazel uh Oakland County Vaccination. Come get your vaccinations.

I wish I would have done that before I got in the flu. HP can children's special health care services and many, many, many more. So come and join us. It'll be a great day. And if you want to do chili, please let us know because the firefighters win every single year. >> They do. They do. >> We're trying to unseat them, but their chili is pretty. >> Their chili is pretty good. >> I have to admit it. >> And then we have our Freedom of Information uh that's just down in below for you to review. Um do you have any questions for me? >> It's not a question, it's a request, I guess. Uh, well, social media has had that stuff on there about ICE, and I know you just sent out the letter again.

Could you just remind people that um that you sent out a letter about the process? >> I sure can. Are you talking people or or staff? Cuz staff got it in their emails. They got it in this weekly update as well, and then parents got it. Would you like it to go to the parents? just just a comment something that to reassure them especially since they were at Amazon and Hazel Park today. >> I heard that but I didn't get to see the information but we absolutely will and um this is a safe school district and I hope you guys would all support even a resolution if we brought it forth to you um on that this is a safe place. Would you like that for next meeting? >> Yes. Okay. >> We'll do it

at the committee the whole >> Okay. >> All right. Uh, board member comments. >> Um, I want to thank our schools and staff that gave us all these wonderful treats. Um, I might hide them and leave them in my car so my kids do not take them. Um, our high school presentation. I always love seeing our high schoolers come in and he gives a variety of everything. So, um, thank you to Preston. Um, Hooper presentation was amazing and I know no one gave you props earlier, but nice prop up of the kid so you could hear her. [laughter] >> She sounded wonderful. Um, it was beautiful to hear about the owls and then the ecosystem from Jasper. Um, just one more thing is our Hismark Promise Zone dinner is going to be March 3rd this

year. Um, the link is active on our Promise um website. They're $75 a ticket and it's from 5:30 to 8:30. There will be basket donations if anyone would like to do that. And we have um a couple new fun things. We have some fun new MC's this year. Some of our drama kids are going to MC for us. Um which is pretty fun because that's the week of their big show too. So I'm excited that they said yes to us. And then um one of our >> Can you tell us where it is? >> Uh it's at the gazebo at 13 in. And then um one of our local local um clothing shops is going to be there for us and they're going to be able to do like right on the spot t-shirts, hoodies,

whatever for us this year. So that'd be in that extra little room, too. >> Nice. Thank you. >> I just wanted to say, you know, also Preston always gives a great presentation. He's he's filling in well for his predecessor who was also equally, you know, pleasant and informational. Uh great to see the kids up there, you know, all the students of the month. Uh the Hoover reading, you know, that's so much fun. I know how much the the teachers work on that and how much they care about it and and you can tell how excited they are. Uh, and you know, it takes a lot of courage to get up there as a little kid and read in front of the whole room. So, that's great. Uh, yeah, just excited for uh, you know, everything

going forward. Uh, winter sports are in full civic swing right now. So, uh, just thanks uh, to everyone. >> April, Darren, >> I I would just like to say thank you for the recognition and I do appreciate it. And uh also um I I think I'm thinking about the solo ensemble for the kids are going to be doing. I used to do that. Um and and one of the thoughts would be wouldn't it be nice to like a half hour before the board meeting to get maybe a couple of those groups to come and play. >> Sure. We can ask what they like. >> Just see if you know it'd be kind of interesting and it' be nice to hear you know the them playing and I don't know and and it can go with

the choir and the drama. I mean, we can do any of that just to kind of kick us off on the right side of the thing. >> That's all. Have a great night. Thank you for everyone's participation. [clears throat] >> That's great suggest suggestion, April. >> Uh, obviously I would agree with everybody else, thanking the the students and the staff that came to present today. Um, I did especially like little Aurora when she said her principal will read her book and she was like, "No, babe. I wrote that. [laughter] You will not be reading my book." Um, so that was nice of her. Um, it was, uh, great last week to be able to attend the press conference at Longfellow Community Center. Um, sort of kicking off the partnership between Oakland Connects, Southfield Schools, Hazel

Park Schools. Uh, we did have a lot of dignitaries and administrators there that were, um, you know, part of the presentation and they gave speeches, but thank you to Carla and her community school staff, um, Brooke, Stephanie, Chris, and Chloe. um they did a lot of the heavy lift for getting that event off the ground and they were able to attend but um you know sometimes when you do that work you don't get to show up in front of the camera so I want to make sure that they know that that didn't go unnoticed. Um really happy to hear thank you to President Hinton for even bringing it up um that we may have a resolution coming um about the safety of our schools and the access. Um, I would remind the community that there

is a bill that is currently in front of our legislature, SB508, that does designate sensitive spaces like educational institutions and schools as a place that immigration officers um are unable to unduly enter uh without in the way that they currently are. Um, I was going to try to be diplomatic, but I don't care. Um, so if that's something that is important to you, uh, do contact your legislators and let them know that you are in favor of that. And then I would just like to close by I know that this is technically our January meeting, but it is February 2nd and I don't want to, um, delay too much longer that obviously we are at the beginning of Black History Month. um and make sure that this board and our schools just take the time

to honor the achievements and acknowledge the challenges of our students throughout the month of February. >> All right. Thank you for that uh comment. I thought about that earlier today and um I didn't write it down. So that's Thank you for that. Um I just have on here while I was going to give a little update uh talked to Debbie last night. She is in Washington DC with Berkeley schools and Farmington schools and Birmingham and Bloomfield and um first time in many years Hazel Park has been represented um at that conference and so they're advocating for -ate money and special ed money and and uh against vouchers and so they're doing all that legislative uh work there. So, um, she's enjoying it and she's learning a lot and she's bringing it back to us. And

then I have the strategic plan. The next community meeting is the 10th at 6 p.m. Correct. >> Yes. And we will be putting that on social media as well as um, President Hinton with a spreadsheet if community members want to join so they can sign up. And don't you guys forget to put your name on there, too. >> Good. Um, yeah. And if you can't make it to the meeting, fill out the survey if you can pull it up on online and and participate that way. Um, and then I just have thank you for the gifts. It's nice to be recognized and those things look really yummy and the flower is beautiful. Makes you think of spring with all that snow. Look at all that beauty right there. So that's all I have. >> I

have one more thing that I forgot about if you don't mind, please. Um, I received a text message probably about two weeks ago, um, when we played Lampir and basketball. Um, in between the JV game and the varsity game, they played their unified basketball game. And two parents who I've known for a long time messaged me and wanted to commend our boys basketball team or varsity team because obviously these children struggle a little bit more than them, right? And our kids were screaming and going crazy every basket. And she was like, I've never seen a team act so supportive. and they like just stood there and watched and never left. And so I just commend our basketball team for being so supportive and having good sportsmanship. >> Okay. Motion to motion to >> support. No.

Oh. that. >> Yeah, I'll get that out there. [clears throat] >> Oh, yeah. No, I grabbed it. >> Might not be a board member, but I got >> jelly. So curly. >> That's okay. >> Yeah.
