001I will now call the regular special can I have a roll call please yes here now I'd like to ask everyone to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance please foreign can I get a motion to approve the agenda please I move the Board of Education improved agenda as written in seconds any discussion all in favor please say yes yes yes yes Jamie can you hear well enough yes okay all right next we have public comment the Board of Education recognizes the value of public comment on educational issues and the importance of allowing members of the public to express themselves on-district matters to permit fair and orderly public expression the void shall provide a period for public participation at the public meeting of the board and publish rules to govern such participation in board meetings and
002in board committee meetings the rule shall be administered and enforced by the presiding officer of the meeting the presiding officers shall guide be guided by the following rules public participation shall be permitted as indicated on the order of business anyone with concerns related to the operation of the schools or to the matters with the authority of the board May participate during the designated public participation portion of a meeting attendees must register their intention to participate in the public participation portion of the meeting upon their arrival at the meeting individuals may may not register others to speak during public participation participation participants must first be recognized by the presiding officer and may be requested to preface their comments by an announcement of their name address and group affiliation if and when appropriate each statement made by
003a participant shall be limited to three minutes duration at the beginning of the meeting and one minute at the at the public comment session at the end of the meeting participants shall direct all comments to the board and not to the staff or other participants so we will start with the first one and that will be suhimple 1203 says I would like to say that tonight's meeting was very confusing if you logged onto board books the first thing you see is the regular meeting at seven o'clock I only knew there was a there was two meetings because I was told it was at 5 30. and I showed the person it was seven until I was told to scroll down I don't know how two meetings with the same agenda works when everything is being
004done now we'll repeat again at seven will I have to come back at seven and read this again however I am here as a stakeholder and I do not see how this time works when we provide latchkey for working parents who are also stakeholders and latchkey doesn't end until six therefore those stakeholders are excluded from your meetings I would think that being on the board is about students and family and not about yourself and I would have meetings where everyone would have the opportunity to come and speak at these meetings I do believe that seven is a bit late but your meetings should not start any sooner than six when your latchkey closes I would also like to talk about your discipline policy when a student is suspended and has to go in front of
005the disciplinary board is that board the board members I heard that we have staff threatened and some hit when these students go before the board they are only consequence is some students are told to go back to that staff member and say I'm sorry I remember that school board was part of that board and they would hear the student's case read what was written from the staff watch the video and make decisions on what to do next the law gives the board the right to expel a student if they hit a staff member or anyone volunteering in the school we would make our decisions if the if the hit was could have been prevented that student would then get expelled or sent to Alternative Ed but made to say I'm sorry I'm here to tell
006you that first it's not sincere second the apology is not going to happen and is this our new no tolerance policy I also saw that the superintendent and board president went to go to Mackinac on an invite from the city the city has been going there for 20 plus years and the school has never been involved I'm a bit curious why the entire board wasn't included for eight thousand dollars you can give that out as a scholarship and split it between two students remember everything you do should be for the students thank you thank you sue next we have Ian Lloyd just remember to give your name and address please hello Ian Lloyd greetings 992 East Miami Park Michigan 48030 topic is school safety and I'm piggybacking on the discipline framework that I'm hearing about
007um specifically I have knowledge as a school social worker credential I'm interested in when did the board discontinuation of the guidelines for addressing threatening and dangerous behavior in schools risk assessment that was a supplemental memo to the district and it was disseminated from Oakland school's Intermediate School District so I'm not sure how familiar you guys are with it it basically um assesses the risk and it renders the disposition but it places a student in an alternative educational setting at the moment I believe that's not occurring and I'd like to know when did it discontinue the usage were you had a dedicated team consisting of all the special ad conducting those risk assessments each and every time the threat occurs and if you can't demonstrate it through some evidence I think that we're that'd be pretty
008shady and in this day and age we we certainly have mental health but I think we're under utilizing youth assistance because that gives you that framework the guideline for assessing the risk and using it and implementing it you can assign it to the court then you can put some enforcement into it with the services at the County for youth assistance to be monitored by like our judge Hartwell and it can help out a whole lot but I know it's not occurring thirdly safety the culture what happens is you never know I think we had we sent the Marine up here last week I think I'm the army guy and you never know when that hot air balloon is gonna blow in we all know that that well we got one and we have to find
009out when that hot air balloon blows in like from Illinois the platinum blonde air balloon it blows into town and next thing you know all of everything goes downwards all of our test scores all of the rest risk assessments are not being done services are not being provided to our students and it's because you guys are in a cost savings triage mode you're not even a you're always above 17 in your special ed because you house all the programs and you're not getting any benefit from relief from the state and all the high stakes testing which adjoins that to our district and when Wilford Webb was around it was cost it was cost incentive but this is cost prohibitive we want these properties sold we want a new beginning the property values are up Longfellow
010is a terrible mess right now I'm sorry thank you that's three minutes okay I would like to invoke future knowledge that I am a handicapped individual I'm a disabled veteran so I want an accommodation in my speaking we'll look into that thank you okay thank you and when would I get a response from the board in regards to my questions that I've posted you can talk to Amy about that if you'd like I don't know I would like the response to be on the agenda next month and disseminated to the public can you do that Dr krupi that's a lot of information well I want public investment not just me and you because I wouldn't have brought the trash in I would have brought it out all right thank you next we have uh I'm
011gonna say this is Matt Dudley Matt dudley22685 Maple Court Hazel Park [Music] um so I one thing I wanted to bring up is uh just recently finding out about the junior high teacher Paul Jacobs or Jacob's Paul whichever one uh just currently found out that uh about his resignation which I was at the parent meeting and I feel like I was led to believe at that point that that there was a termination in his employment not a resignation uh he has a GoFundMe up right now to try to raise money because of his his uh hardship that whatever happened happened but uh he he States in there or whoever created the GoFundMe personally you can't talk about an employee or in a past I can't no okay well anyway he wasn't fired um misinformation that's
012the favorite term here I also had uh something to say about the times I was real confused as well I saw the 5 30 and then the seven and but then the email that I got only had the 5 30. so I'm trying to figure out and then like half the board's not here so what's going on sitting in the office well they're not up here so I'm just wondering why they're not here right um if that doesn't show separation and Division I think I don't know what's going on why is there phone is there phone calls being made people calling people I don't know that's that's really weird notified man excuse me everybody was notified what's I'm sorry he he has the right to finish his three minutes um also I I think the
013also on that Mackinaw trip I think that's a little excessive nine thousand I'm gonna round it up two uh nine thousand dollars for a trip up to Mackinac we've made plenty of camping trips up there I know that's a little bit rough and a little bit different but uh I think it's a I'm not sure I see the value in the point of uh where that where I see I could see other places where that those dollars would go and be much more effective than two people going to Mackinaw City for a weekend um and then also the last thing is uh the blurb I wanted to hear if there was any blurb to the board members about the parent meeting that we had last month um I was informed that everything that the parents
014came we had about 15 parents here had all bunch of great ideas and I was told that the board would get a blurb edited version of the meeting and I just want to know if we're moving forward on anything if there's I didn't see anything on the agenda so I'm assuming nothing's being put into action you know immediately but I'd just like to know if you guys even heard about what was discussed so that's all I have all right thank you Matt thank you next we have Debbie La fanboys good evening Deborah laframe boys won 17 Andrews in court and I am not sitting up there because I'm in protest of this meeting I feel in my opinion it's against the open meeting act it's against protocol for the board and I believe if policy
015as well so I'll come back at seven which is the time that we voted on last month in January and I believe that you shouldn't vote at a meeting for the time of the meeting thank you thank you uh next we have Bev Hinton three East Annabelle I'm here uh not sitting up there also because I don't feel that this is a a legal meeting and I want the public to know why I'm not sitting up there at our meeting in at our January board meeting as required by law to have a regular business meet we voted to have a regular business meeting at seven soon after some members said seven was too difficult for them the superintendent conducted surveys and made phone calls to board members building a consensus that equate it to a
016final decision to hold the business meeting at 5 30. this was a violation of the open meetings act that states all decisions must be made in public two board policies were also violated changing the time place and day of a regular meeting must be discussed and voted on in a in a public forum following the meeting the community must be notified within three days this is law MCL 15.2653 in addition email cannot be used to deliberate or render a decision on matters pending before the board the phone calls and surveys eliminated board discussion it also eliminated the community who we represent a chance to share their thoughts about the change when questions were raised by us about the three violations three board members put in a written request to hold the meeting anyway at 5
01730 before the required discussion and vote took place I was told Oakland schools and our attorney Mr John Garrick has said it was okay for two members to request a meeting this is true it is it it is true for a special meeting not one to subvert public discussion about a meeting change the legal meeting is at seven I received an invite for seven but not 5 30. in weekly notes it is written there most likely will not be a seven o'clock meeting due to no Quorum so three of us were invited to a false meeting even worse it's posted for the community when it's known that it won't take place where two exact meeting agendas posted with different times to confuse the community is the meeting change happening to exclude citizens from attending they
018have been told the meeting isn't for their comments which is not true on the agenda is a vote for Rick Nagy and Dr krupi to attend the city conference on Mackinac Island at a class of eight thousand seven hundred and seventy four dollars my question is how does that benefit our kids also on the agenda is a retention pay for employees except teachers because teachers were given a restitution payment of twelve hundred fifty dollars in a grievance settlement at the finance meeting it was referred to as a bonus given to the teachers call it what it is it's a grievance settlement teachers should be included in the retention pay as well thank you Bev thank you for everybody that's got up and spoke moving on to our special order of business oh I'm sorry I
019didn't get it I didn't get a paper from you please Heidi Fortress two three four four one Hughes just remember you're supposed to fill out a form before I have a form it was in there thank you Rick and if you want to get technical a board presidents should communicate with their board members I have five text messages to you from the 13th to current that you have not returned as a board president that is a lack of communication well you have communicated with other board members but thank you I am here also to do I'm sorry have you started your public comment already did you say you said your name I did I missed your name and address yes I did thank you I am here also to dispute this meeting I have left
020a number of text messages with you to get into communication I was sent an invite till seven and I wanted clarification on what time the actual meeting was to be held and I never received that so I also believe that you guys are in violation since we voted in the January meeting to have it at seven o'clock thank you anybody else fill out a form was there a form in there for her okay does anybody else fill out a form all right thank you very much moving on especially to our special order of business we have some students here with us tonight Mr asterite would like you please join us at the podium okay Advantage Representatives anybody here from the advantage first they have to be accosted on their way out the door good evening
021everybody my name is Sister Williams but I prefer Cicely Vaughn I'm 17 years old and I'm in the 11th grade after graduation I plan on going to medical school to become a travel surgeon or a nurse if not then I will be pursuing in my singing or wrapping I'm sorry I'm nervous don't be nervous honey we're just regular people up here I swear I'm not about to hold you guys up on anything no please we want to hear it all okay we're very happy to have you here you might as well get used to seeing my face because I am the student rep yes that means you'll see my face every month and I have something new to talk about each time if you plan on getting rid of me sorry to say you cannot
022but the reason why I came here today is to speak about what goes on laugh at the Hazel Park Advantage we will begin with Valentine's Day February 14th Mr Smith held a Valentine's dance party whichever you like to call it students bought flowers candy grams balloons from whom for whomever they love Eddie's Pizza was a choice for lunch that day dancing singing making videos taking pictures I believe that this was a big deal for the students everybody we're connecting bonding having fun with each other let me bring y'all back to how this whole party came about [Music] the teachers decided that the use of profanity in the n-word were used by students way more than I should have been yes I am one of them do not hate me try to to try to fix
023the issue the teachers put together a 20-day challenge each student received a point per day but the point was lost if the student used the n-word or profanity the reward for students who use appropriate language about 60 was a celebration on Valentine's Day during fifth hour students enjoy cupcakes chips and beverages they enjoyed this they were entertained by students rapping and some play basketball I feel like the goal to have this celebration each I feel like the goal is to have a celebration each month for students who who use appropriate language hopefully students will be tempted to use a school-appropriate language like their friends who participated in a Valentine's Day Challenge not trying to compare just trying to get an understanding of how or what everybody should do say and or act in a school
024setting now let's switch things up a little bit 10th graders will be going to a Chrysler orientation on Wednesday March 1st March 2nd a group of students are going to participate in the all-net basketball tournament at basketball City next the next time makes the next I'm sorry the second trimester ends on March 10th 2023 seniors must make sure they pass all of their classes whether they're online or in person to graduate I believe and I'm rooting for all of you guys I would like to end my time with a moment of appreciation ever since I came to the school there was one person or a teacher I should say that really stood out to me and I could relate to on a very personal level she keeps it real one billion percent of the time
025nothing has to be sugar coated she knows how to connect with her students and still be a teacher at the same time she'll let you know how she feels in the situation if you open up to her she won't tell you what to do but she'll most definitely tell you or she'll most definitely make sure that you know what you did was right or wrong I've only met one other teacher like this and she reminds me of the Auntie everybody wants or has Miss Lee is one of the one of the two teachers one of the two best teachers I've come across and I love to thank her for helping for keeping a good relationship with her students and of course me thank you all for your time you'll see me again thank you okay
026next we have the high school representative that's funny how high school representative here tonight okay next is the junior high representative hi I'm Thomas I'm the 8th grade representative for the Hazel Park Junior High there haven't been any big issues to bring up at a meeting in the past couple of months so I'll just talk about a few of the good things that have happened on February 1st 8th grade went to Oakland University to kind of tour the building we got to design our Dream college and then we got a tour of the place so and we also got to see some of the opportunities that they have at Oakland Community College well not Community Oakland University my bad and they also had good food there and then the next day on February 2nd on
027the 8th grade went to the high school and we took a tour of the building we got to ask some of the Freshman questions uh what else did we do we also got to sign up for Club sign an interesting interest form so yeah not much to talk about today but no we'd like to hear this yeah [Applause] hello I'm Madison we're at T um I don't want to babble too much today but I just wanted to thank everyone who made sure the junior high was open um for the people who didn't have any power this week and it was a really great family time and again we thank you [Applause] thank you for coming to the meeting tonight we always value student input and what's going on next we have um somebody for the
028promise Zone update hi there my name is Fernando monke I am the new director of The Promise Zone the Hazel Park promise Zone if you're not familiar with it we work with your kids in high school uh setting my office is in high school in the Hazel Park High School I just started this new job I come with 10 years of experience working at universities most recently at Central Michigan University I'm working alongside Musa you want to introduce yeah I don't know who you are just like I said I just started a new job I just want to quickly do a quick introduction so that you know who I am we'll be working closely together um hopefully for for a while uh assisting your your students in reaching that post-secondary goal whatever that means for
029them uh just a quick a few things that I wanted to mention in the past year we awarded over ninety four thousand dollars in scholarships for you students to attend uh either um career is there any sort of career institution whether that is Community College for your institutions or um trade uh trade institutions right um we have over 40 mentors in helping us get those students that well while they are in college already help them succeed so we're working not just in getting them into the universities into those trade schools but also helping them uh be retained right gradually we are also offering additional Services besides just that right we're helping them with Summer scholarships and once they get to their Junior and their senior years we're also helping them with additional financial aid uh
030we're also assisting our juniors in SAT prep as well as our seniors of course but I was starting as early as a junior year uh we're helping them get the scores up so that they can attain those goals be able to attend those goal uh those dream universities uh just a few things before that I also want to make sure that you know that we have continuity of services uh before me we had Brandon who did an excellent job for the last three to four years helping your kids do the same thing that I'm doing now and I hope to be able to fill in his shoes as well as I can uh we're getting started with promoting a summer scholarship for the upcoming summer and we're also working on integrating our data into uh
031one place instead of it being everywhere right so make sure that we can better assist our students before I move on I wanted to leave you with some words about our coming dinner next week and Musa we'll take we'll talk about that thank you and nice to meet you folks all right thank you so much Fernando so my name is Musa so I have been working for the primary zone for the past six years out of the 10th of the Prime Zone life so what I can tell you this evening is that the program is going very well so we have new changes and the program is much more inclusive now so we have lots of another mention summer scholarship Juniors and Senior scholarship the regular Amazon scholarship and also the SAT prep so these
032are add value to the program over years and years and we are even looking to expand the program this year to the Alternative High School and uh the other highest management Vikings okay definitely so we are extended the program on a yearly basis so we also have a new Grant partner this year which is the Jamie and Jacob Family Foundation so we got grant for them also to engage alumni in the process and ask for another mention the mentoring program now is Shifting to the near peer model those who went through the program in 2019 are now giving back to the community that has been the vision the youth engagement the youth involvement in the process so that's how we will build a better scholar Community for the Youth here in Hazel Park and that
033is part of the mission of the parmesan and lastly we have the dinner coming up which is Monday March 6th at the Regency Banquet Hall in Southfield so tickets are 75 dollar per person and also we have a Mick a Mike McFall as the EMC of the events and we have the congresswoman Haley Steven who will be also coming to talk during the event and we also have invited all the students who are leaving right now in East Lansing to come to this event so we can also make sure that we acknowledge what they went through last week so this dinner is very special this year and also the student section it will be 100 made by and for student we have a student panel from class of 2012 to the class of 2022 so
034as I said the philosophies who make sure that students own this work so the person who will facilitate the student panel is a sophomore to run in college and all the student panelists are those who went through the program and did very well with their education and with the support of this community so with that being said that's all we have for you this evening thank you all right [Applause] all right thank you for being here we know how important the promo zone is and we are lucky to have this program in our districts do we have other student Representatives uh yeah we have Junior High Representatives yeah so next we have um and now our Junior High representative I believe we have a project lead the way student with us today it scared me
035that we still had kids there and I didn't know okay I want to say good evening and thank you for letting us come here today we had a really know what we're going to present there's lots of positives going on I know Dr dalmadge talks a lot about our art reading program which is going fantastic and one of the things I talked about was the Project Lead the Way in the sixth grade so I'm gonna let them do the talking um I'm gonna introduce Lillian she's going to start and then we'll go from there hi I'm really under doing an ankle for orthosis instant design challenge it was pretty hard and when the students first started exploring engineering and learning the design process they had they were solving problems and also finding problems to solve
036there were a design requirements that we had to follow which was it attaches to the patient's foot and lower leg it follows upward movement at the ankle where the foot or toes move in an upward Direction toward the shin or the front leg it places the foot flat on the floor when standing it prevents the patient from pointing or rising up onto their toes it supports the Foot and Ankle including the heel and Arch of the foot it is comfortable for the patient to wear and we had to pay special attention to areas where bones may stick out and too much or too little padding can create pressure points which can create wounds and it's removable um students started to brainstorm ideas create sketches and share ideas to create group design so we can build
037our prototype and these are actually some of the student designs that they came up with our favorite part was using recyclable and scrap materials team presented their final prototype to their peers I think one of the things that I thought was really cool about this project was you know it did with design you wouldn't the kids actually researched how they were going to design this project we forgot the project unfortunately at school we brought one in for you but we I forgot it so it is what it is but um it was I was exciting to call those kids out I asked Miss Jermaine if she had some students that really were interested in the project these guys were all names if they came there was two others that unfortunately couldn't make it tonight but
038we're proud of them and I thought they did a great job so thank you guys all right way to go [Applause] always all right thank you for that great presentation I always oh we always like to see what is going on in our classroom so I'll finish the picture first all right uh next up on our next up on our consent agenda can I get a motion to approve the consent agenda Motion trooperative in a second all in favor please say yes yes all those opposed say no yeses have it okay uh we will move on to unfinished business items this is a review of the 2023 meeting day calendar we voted on last month unfinished business uh the 2023 Board of Education meeting dates calendar draft uh can I get a motion please foreign
039I move the Board of Education except oh I'm sorry um I move the Board of Education except the 2023 Board of Education meeting calendar update as presented I second uh any discussion please um if you could for the audience please explain that we've talked to our attorneys about what we've done and there is nothing illegal going on and the change of the meeting you know school boards are foolproof if we make a mistake we can change it we can go back and take another vote and fix it and this is kind of what happened here we automatically put in the seven o'clock thing when we realized that a lot of our members work nights including myself so then we thought about it again and that's how this came about nothing fishy nothing nefarious okay sorry
040Rick I took your job well there was some there was some the initial change was going to be earlier yeah some of the some of the staff here that has to be here for these meetings um you know hoping that we can get everybody home at a decent time to be with their families you know twice a month and then there was some rebutal against that that that that was too early so then we thought that that was a um I can't think of the word right now when you come together and agree compromise there you go I'm sorry I need sleep um and so we changed it to 5 30. um I don't know if anybody I I work nights also but the time of the meeting is irrelevant to me I lose a
041day no matter what um so that that's where I stood on it and if there is more I mean everybody who's usually here was here so I don't know if that difference changes much but we can always change it in the future too exactly this was kind of a pilot thing to see if it was me if I'm out already coming home from work there's a better chance of me stopping by this meeting then going home eating and getting in my warm house and coming back out that's just me but I think there's other people out there like that while I'm out I'm gonna run by here Monica do you have anything okay yeah I agree with everybody else I mean we discussed it it's gone through all the channels and you know you got
042to kind of accommodate everybody and it's been at seven o'clock we get the same basically two parents come which we appreciate we appreciate everybody that comes but it would be nice if we had some more I know a lot of people watch it on on our cable channel so that's great too I know a lot of districts they don't get any appearance at all so I think we're pretty fortunate that we get children to come here the students um you know any parents that come here it's great so you know we appreciate all that so is there anything else as far as a calendar we did reduce the special uh meetings from every month or every other month so we did work on that and that kind of cuts down a little bit I think
043that's about it I mean anybody else have any other questions okay roll call or it doesn't say on here yeah uh all those in favor say yes yes yes yes anybody voting no I guess just haven't okay uh next we will be our new business items we'll begin with an update on stem good evening good evening good evening so that Junior High presentation was a really nice segue with Brad's rooms are doing this Brad are you gonna vote Go full screen we're just gonna go ahead so um as I said the junior high presentation was a great segue into some of the stem steam offerings that we have in the district we really in my opinion what we have at the junior high I think I've said this before is really um like no other
044the fact that our sixth grade seventh grade and eighth grade students all experience projectally the way courses is significant uh those projectally the way courses are have various topics but one of the things that is really critical about those is that they're really focused on authentic learning experiences they're focused on problem solving and critical thinking and then the final piece is really about making a difference so that is a key component and a foundational piece of what's going on at the junior high but tonight I'm really just going to go over a few brief things briefly we're not going to go through the whole presentation in detail you have it the board members have this access to in the board packet and the community has this as well and what I'd like to do is
045just kind of go for an overview and then we'll share some of the pictures because that's really the fun part so as you know we have an established steam class at the elementary level and that means all of our students K5 have an opportunity to engage in various topics related to Stem and steam we also make sure that we are focusing on Internet safety and digital citizenship that's a key component of making sure our children are safe when they're out online and building those foundational skills so we have experiences at the elementary encoding and programming we do have 3D printing through the use of the 3D printers the students have an opportunity to use Cad and they are using CAD maybe not quite as sophisticated as someone would be in the discipline but they are
046getting the basics of that we also really spend a lot of time on digital media and literacies along with maybe a little bit newer into what we're doing is project-based learning and the engineering design process another thing that's coming to the district which was a big highlight is you know Oakland County has the stem eye truck in the stem eye truck is really an immersive stem experience last year we had the semi truck in April in our fourth grade and seventh grade students were able to attend due to the shortened week with some testing and a day off we were unable to have any secondary students attend so the goal this year when they come in May is to have our fourth graders again our seventh graders and our seniors who will be leaving the
047district we talked a little bit about the junior high another really big piece of note is that through a partnership with Deloitte we also have students involved in the smart Factory smart Rover project which is again another very immersive stem-based experience that's really hooked to Industry models that is a really key piece of what's going on in the junior high as well and then the final piece is our our high school you know we have our computer science programming this year we did not run any of the Project Lead the Way engineering courses but that does not mean that they won't run next year and then of course all the wonderful work done with our welding course there's some great pictures in the presentation later and then it's kind of like our Die Hard first
048robotics team Mr Mrs gubo in both I think actually all three of their children are up and running and they have their first competition next week and another big positive is that we did actually get a first Lego lead program at Hoover actually the teacher over there is running two teams because there was so much interest so we continue to try to build that program and it is a really Key Program we it really relies on teachers and also parents if they want to volunteer to be coaches we'll continue to try to push that and expand that a little bit more so I'm going to go into a few great pictures not into any more details like I said this presentation is available for everybody but I think it's wonderful to see the Great great
049pictures of our kids engaged in these immersive experiences these are all things that are going on our elementary building we also had our one of our elementaries take a group of students to Lawrence Tech we had an opportunity to go to Lawrence Tech University and they engaged and immersed in some coding and Robotics and then at the same Elementary building we also had Michigan girls future flight challenge and that was at Webb Elementary and then final few pictures of all the different things that our students are doing one of the things that I want to highlight here is all of you know the Makerspace opened up at United Oaks and one of the great things that has really been expanded this year is to have open school days on Saturday when our families can come
050in and utilize that space and Mrs Grassley was at 38 at the last one and you know families and students had an opportunity not only to engage in our maker space but really got to explore it we're doing some paper circuits a lot of robots and coding so another great example of the stem steam experiences in our district this is a quick snapshot of our first Lego League at Hoover as they prepare to build their robots and they will go to They Don't Really necessarily call it a competition at that level it's really just an event that they go to and they show the work that they did as it relates to the problem that they were trying to solve uh popping up into 612 I did include some of the highlights of the smart
051Rover project if you are interested in learning more there is a lot of information out there if you look up Deloitte in smart Rover projects you can see all the Deep experiences our students have as they engage in that here's a couple of our students and Project Lead the Way you saw a little bit about that already this is our Automation and Robotics course and then popping up into welding as you know that's an amazing program uh that Dr postel brought work done and brought to the district and our welding teacher is just an amazing person doing wonderful things with students so I know beyond the content of what they're doing they're also expanding into having presentations for example they had the Ohio tech welding presentation so they came to the building and they gave
052a presentation to these students so again we're trying to engage students in those stem disciplines and then the final is a few pictures these are welding course images and then we have our first robotics team and they're like I said their first competition is this weekend so we are always again looking for ways to expand uh one of the things that we try to do this last summer was bring a little bit more to our summer programming which we will continue to do uh this is a really really key component that we offer for our students and uh really PK 12. we do have some robotics that we've started at Webster you know just just some of the basics but we do have that so thank you for allowing me to come to the board
053does anyone have any questions about our steam stem programming congratulations Stephanie good job thank you thank you for the update Mrs domich um you have the uh next presentation for us for the uh data presentation so once again um the board has the full presentation it's obviously a lengthy presentation we're not going to go through all that presentation but it was important for the board to have as well as the community to have the data or the information that goes by uh behind some of the updates so what I'm really going to do is really focus on what we found as we went through the second round of winter I ready testing so let me just get to those slides so uh one of the things that we always do as a district every year
054is we write goals and those goals are both our district Improvement goals and our strategic plan goals so one of the pieces that we always try to do is we try to be very systemic about the work that we're doing we're not going to have District Improvement goals over here and then strategic plan goals that are different than that in addition to that our buildings are required by the state to identify a goal and academic goal in all of our buildings academic goals and K-8 are really aligned and supportive of these as a matter of fact I believe our elementary goals the goals that our elementary billing principles selected are really the same goals that we have for K5 as well as our Junior High so one of the things that was really important to
055us was that when we looked at our data this year you know we went through those pandemic years it was a little tricky we got back in last year we got a little bit back into some of our more valid and reliable assessments as kids were back in in-person setting and so what we really tried to do was really try to push things so one of the goals that we have up here well I'm going to call it like a stretch goal is really around pushing and increasing the percentage of students that are mid above grade level we are also looking for students that are at what I already calls tier one and essentially tier one is where we want our students to be mid above grade level is obviously way up there so we
056wrote our goals in two different ways one was to have that stretch goal to kind of really push because we know that's where we want our students to go and the second was to write a goal around tier one so essentially we are really pushing for our K-5 students for by the end of the year for 50 percent of our students in kindergarten through fifth grade as an aggregate that means across all of our K-5 students across all of our buildings 50 percent of our students would be at tier one at that point our other goal up to Mid and above is to have 25 percent the second goal is around math and that math goal is a little bit different and it's really based on what our growth and progress was last year and
057then pushing it up a little bit was that we would like 40 of our K-5 students at tier one by the end of the year and about 20 of that mid above grade level flipping over into junior high where we're really focused again on what the data was the progress was last year our goal for the junior high is to have at least 25 percent at tier one with a ten percent increase in mid or above so really the focus of what I'm going to talk about tonight for the presentation is really where we are with those goals once again all the data is there for everyone to go through if they would like to it those graphs get a little bit tiring after you go through a lot of them so we're just going
058to go through the updates this is our uh these four graphs again I'm going to flip through quickly I just want you to orient them Orient you to what they are essentially as I said we've got some goals for the end of the year and those black lines the target lines are where we should be at the end of the year so every time we are looking at data every time we come together in a building every time we come together at the district level every time our building administrators our Ad Council together we are talking about those goals and we are talking about where we are as it relates to those goals what's working and what actions that we need to take so the next four goals again are really about where we are
059nested with our targets for reading and math visually you can see you can get a glimpse of where we are remember what's up there is end of year goals this is where we want our students to be at the end of the year and these are our math goals so now I want to get onto the good stuff so uh as uh most of you know we implemented a new reading resource this year and along with that reading resource really put a lot of focus and energy on making sure that we're building capacity and providing excellent support and training for our teachers and our building administrators coupled with that in our strong instructional coaching team along with our strong leadership at the billing level we have started to see some nice progress and what I
060really spent a lot of time doing was not necessarily looking certainly we want those proficiency numbers to grow up but in three months because essentially when we tested you know about three three and a half months of real true implementation because I think it's really really important that we understand and we Nest our thinking around a new resource and the fact that it's new our teachers did an amazing amount of learning and should be congratulated for that because they put a lot of energy a lot of effort into learning around using this new resource and it takes time we all know when you're learning something new it takes a little bit of time so we knew that we might not see significant change by this midi midpoint but we did see some positive change again
061we are you know our students went through those pandemic years and there are certainly some areas of learning that we need to improve and grow so in the area of reading one of the things that really stood out is that we are starting to see a difference in the foundational skills as you know we talked in the past one of the reasons why we purchased that resource was because it was really strong in some of the principles of the science of reading related to foundational skills in particular the ones that were areas that we needed to focus on were phonics and vocabulary and what I can tell you is in comparison with the data from last year to this year we have about four percent more students mid or above grade level and about four
062percent more students which is about 40 to 50 students who have decreased or moved out of tier three in the area of phonics we also saw some nice progress like that with vocabulary we didn't see quite as much it was about three percent so that's one of the real big positives another thing that we saw is that we saw some significant change and I have to highlight this at the junior high this is really really really important and critical you know we did not have any growth last year at this time I can't tell you how much I was smiling when I looked at it this year uh at all three grade levels sixth seventh and great eighth we saw growth I believe it was around um and when I say growth it's growth toward
063meeting their typical growth goal we had about 30 to 40 percent of our sixth graders toward that typical growth goal now it needs to be about 60 percent but we're growing and we'll talk about why we think that's happened uh seventh grade was close to where they needed to be which was significant that is such a a positive piece for the work that our Junior High team has done and I talking about from the building Administration to our coaches to our teachers and eighth grade was also showing some nice girls so I think those are some real positives another real big positive is we noticed some growth that we hadn't seen last year in our students who receive special education services real significant last year I believe it was actually I don't have the exact
064amount but basically Ian I ready at this time their growth is measured by how much progress they made toward their typical growth goal our seventh grade students who are receiving special education services made 112 percent growth toward their growth goal remember we only need to be at around 60. so again a number of different real positive pieces that are showing us that our choice to shift to that reading resource and the dedication and the time that our teachers and our coaches and our billing administrators have put in place are starting to make a difference in literacy we know that there's more work to do so it's absolutely a practice of ours as soon as we get the information we start digging down into what what are the areas that we are seeing and what are
065the plans we already have our coaches working on a plan related to improving phonemic awareness in some of their students that don't have it we also met with the junior high team to look at some targeted action action around eighth grade so again we get the data we analyze it and then we take action uh just that's just a little highlight of reading again I won't go through everything I'm happy to uh through Dr croupy explain anything else that we need to but I do want to touch uh based on math actually let me do this quickly I forgot about this slide so I am always coming up here talking in numbers and numbers tell part of the story but they don't tell all of the story so another thing that I did was I
066went out and I gathered what I would call qualitative it's basically information from people about what they're seeing and what they're noticing and what their thoughts and opinions are about this and so I'll just read through a quick um quick some of the uh a few quick ones because it's really important because we know engagement is the first thing that needs to happen and over and over and over when I went to the buildings and the coaches what I heard was a change in student engagement so um just for a few student engagement and independent reading and small group instruction has increased students are excited about being able to choose books to read and are motivated by the 100 book challenge to read as many books as they can Arc has allowed teachers to become
067less focused on reading instruction and has has sorry not less let me try that again let's redo that Arc has allowed teachers to become laser focused on reading instruction and assessment there is consistency across grade levels with instructional routines as you know the board was wonderful in allowing us to go K-8 that was a significant commitment and it's making a positive change School Pace which is the the tool where we aggregate the data is something that teachers can use and they're able to look at real-time data and respond and enter information about what students are doing thus allowing teachers and mtss teachers to make decisions and change interventions or move students forward if need be I think I'm going to go flip down to the bottom one because it's about the junior high just makes
068me smile um this was and these are not from me these are from coaches building principles and others while walking around the building during success hours that is the time in the junior high schedule where students work with teachers and their individual specific needs are are focused on while walking around the building during success hours there's a noticeable improvement with students spending their independent reading time fully engrossed in their books administrators have also noted to me numerous times how impressed they are with the level of Engagement during independent reading students are asking for the sequels to many of the books that have been studied within the toolkits and we have been able to provide those to encourage a serious Habit in Reading students are also sharing book talks with other students after reading a book
069that they thought was a very interesting and engaging students are then reading books recommended by their peers and overall there's just more focused reading and intentional reading that students are enjoying if that doesn't say at all I don't know what does so we are definitely seeing a change we expect that positive change in strong trajectory to continue with the implementation of that resource just real quickly on to math our our math progress this year was not quite as much as it was last year we know that's an area of focus we will again systematically go through what that data is and start to put some actions in place as a matter of fact I think there was some reflection over the weekend and uh with a couple of people around okay what are we going
070to do next one of the things that we do notice because we do have the ability to go into iready and look at standards really some of the it's some of the basic things that was around some of the foundational mathematical skills such as some of the basics around addition subtraction multiplication and division and we know with targeted actions those will shift but we did have some positives especially on some reductions if you will in the percentage of students in tier three and tier three is where our students are either two or three or more grade levels below so uh the percentage of students in grades four through eight um in tier three did decrease in grades four through five it decreased sixty to forty percent and remember that was just uh you know between
071the testing we tested in October and January so that was a three-month period of time so the work that our teachers are doing is significantly impacting our students in that tier three again uh we saw a decrease of about eight percent in our our seven percent in six eight and fifth grade had the most significant decrease which is about 10 percent going from 65 to 43 percent so um what I hope to do tonight was really just give you some of those highlights about some of the positives uh as you know like I said we always take action we are digging into the data and we were talking about action right now and what we're going to do to move these things forward but I do have to say thank you again to the board
072for allowing us to purchase our and for the dedication to our building administrators we've got a couple here and uh really uh a significant thank you and praise of our instructional coaches who have really LED this work at the the ground level and our teachers for um in the busyness and all the complexities and the wonderful things they do during the day being willied and willing to jump in and do what they needed to do to really impact our students I want to say thank you for your hard work on this we'll be sharing this in Dar um administrative team this was the the planned a presentation for our last special meeting that unfortunately we didn't have a quorum for so um your your hard work is really respected yeah thank you so much and
073you um also have the Leo so yes so we're going to go through this one quick so um we also do is not as extensive we do have building goals for our secondary and uh really what I'd like to focus on is our high school because they've done some significant work around college board or College spring and uh notice some nice increases in literacy as well are other schools do Aggregate and collect data what is in this presentation and I will tell you right now um all of our buildings have building goals in terms of schools such as Edison and Vantage because they have small populations and I think I've said that to the board before typically you do not report any data of a group of students of 30 or less and so I
074just want you to know ahead of time that Edison an advantage do have billing goals and there are monitoring and tracking those at all times so once again I'm not going to go through the whole presentation it is available for anyone that would like to see it but I wanted to go to some of the high points so number one as you know the high school has dedicated time this year much like last year to implementing College spring and some of the instructional strategies around that and it's really around increasing literacy or I should say reading at that level but still literacy and mathematical skills and really helping to prepare our students to take the College Board assessments the PSAT and the sat in the spring and so we did see some nice increases so
075on average on the SAT and this is our 11th graders of course there were 39 points 39 points on the overall score of an increase 29 Points of increase in evidence-based Reading Writing that is what ebrw is and then 18 points across math scores and of the 83 students who took test one and test two 60 students improved by average by an average of 83 points that is a real significant growth in terms of our literacy area we also had Advantage also was involved in that and because we're not getting down into some of the details probably should have put that up there now that I'm you know talking about that but we'll go through it quickly average increases on the SAT were 69 points on the overall score and we also had increases in
076evidence-based reading and writing and math scores and then of the population that took the students I'll remove that before it goes out on the uh the website seven students improved by an average of 74 points so again some real targeted work around improving our students in their literacy and math skills and their ability to understand how to really take in and really engage with that PSAT or SAT test in addition to that our high school also had a graduation goal you know that's always something they're focusing on and so to date we have 73 of the students on track we have another 19 who really just have some credit recovery courses to complete which I'm sure they will and if we complete all those that would put us at a 92 percent four-year graduation rate
077now I will say it um you know that when we see those graduation rates posted we have the four-year graduation rate the five and the six those numbers are all very different and they are calculated um in a very specific way following the end of the school year so when I'm giving this this is just raw numbers of this many students will be on track out of this many students graduating Dr groupie would you like to add anything about graduation rate ah so again we always focus on and I didn't do this in the last one but um you can see it really talk focus on some areas that we want to improve and that's really some specific areas around supporting uh better I'm going to say doing better to support our students our black
078or African-American students I hope and I will call it out that um we really need to make sure that we focus on what we need to do differently and we're not focusing on the students and so when I'm saying what we need to do differently to support our students it's really focused on that's exactly what it is we can't Nest all that in the students we need to Nest it in what are our actions to support our students all of whom we need to make sure are moving forward so you can see there are a couple of areas that we need to be focusing on as it relates to graduation status and College spring we are very cognizant of those areas and those areas are something that we are consistently talking about consistently working on
079and consistently asking ourselves a question what do we need to do differently so we can support all of our students so once again in the spirit of time I'm not going to go through the whole presentation all the information in the data is there does anyone have any questions related to secondary is that it all right thank you for your presentation Dr damage next we have item D is the three-year plan and this is an informational item Dr crupy yeah so every year this is the month that you've asked for the three year plans to be presented and so the tech plan and the teaching and learning department has updated theirs and I am sure next month the um as the buildings and grounds are looking at a little different for custodial and maintenance that
080as well as the three-year budget plan would be presented all right thank you next is the dance team can I get a motion for the dance team please the Board of Education approve the dance team travel for their National composite competition as presented second any discussion all those in favor say yes yes yes those opposed please say no okay the yeses have it uh next uh is the mhsaa state finals can I get a motion for the item F the mhsa I'm of the Board of Education to prove the mhsaa final state finals overnight trip for our boys and girls bowling teams second um all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no okay the s's have it next is can I get a motion for item e stop the bleed I
081move the Board of Education purchase of 270 stop the bleed can for district classrooms as presented second all in favor please oh I need to discuss just real quick just so we're all aware the stop the bleed kits are part of the avert training that our staff received and we'll be either putting that in some of the safety money or in the title IV Grant as we're finishing it and this is enough for all of our buildings all of our buildings all of our classrooms and extra as needed okay any other discussion okay all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no the yeses have it okay next uh can I get a motion for the retention bonus I move the Board of Education approve the retention bonus for the staff as
082presented second any discussion yeah just briefly um we know that during discussions with the teachers union that we gave retention bonuses as part of an agreement which we had been talking about for some time as a team and it has been the sports practice and was given us guidance by the Personnel committee to seek out doing the same for every staff member as we've had in the past saying that all all staff are are equal can you address the difference between a retention bonus and why the teachers wouldn't theirs was a retention bonus listed in their agreement as well okay does that address the discrepancy which was talked about earlier well it was uh retention dollars we've done that in the past as part of an mou with the are the teachers getting cheated that's
083all I wanted everyone's getting the same amount as this board has always done certainly the Personnel committee could see send us out to negotiate more for the teachers but that's not been our past practice okay thank you any other discussion okay all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no yeses have it okay next can I get a motion for the custodial maintenance intern increase I move the Board of Education to approve the custodial maintenance intern increase of two dollars to be applied only to the winner and spring break interns as presented well just quickly we asked for 12 instead of 14 and other interns we're getting 14 and found that to be discrepant so we wanted to be equal to our custodial and maintenance interns as we are our technology interns
084any other discussion okay although in favor please say yes yes yes all those opposed please say no yeses have it next can I get a motion for item H covet days I'm with the Board of Education to prove the five-day but five days of covet pay is presented second any discussion all in favor please say yes yes yes I was opposed please say no yeses have it next I'm just here if you have any questions oh I'm sorry she's here for Kay oh you're here for the next one okay can I get a motion for the director of student services I'm with the Board of Education to approve the reclassification of the duties for the executive director of student services position as presented second second okay any discussion go ahead um I'm just here to
085ask for the approval of changing the position for the director sooner to the executive says there would be a ten thousand dollar increase in pay and for that the responsibilities added would include that the executive director of student services would now be in charge of all of alternative education as well as the special education department early on in ecsc that's it that's it okay all right so that we're clear she's getting ten thousand dollars more for taking over alternative Ed and her keeping her current okay thank you prorated for the year yes right so that's that sounds good any other discussion any questions okay all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no the yeses have it thank you Christy um next we have can I get a motion for item J
086administrative assistant to the assistant superintendent of business and operations please I'm of the Board of Education to prove the position for an administrative assistant to the assistant superintendent of business and Opera operations as presented this is referring to an assistant to Jason correct yes okay okay second um okay any discussion not unless there's questions you have any questions for me nope okay uh all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no the yes is have it next is can I get a motion for our last item of new business the drama interns I move the Board of Education to approve the drama internship as presented second any discussion yes uh we have been presented with a plan for drama for the long term and one of it is is to get our
087kids more involved on a daily basis with planning design as well as doing updates uh with the head drummer Drummer instructure at high school and so we're really excited to get more kids involved sounds good okay all in favor please say yes yes yes those opposed please say no the s's have it um next Let's see we already went through the drama wrestling wrestling wrestling okay can I get a motion for our last item of new business the drama interns I uh I move the Board of Education to approve the overnight trip for the wrestling team as presented I know what they got it written wrong second It Was Written wrong and she just put that down for the aspect yes that was a that was the motion for wrestling I'm sure yes we have
088a second yes any discussion we've got kids that are going pretty exciting and uh we'll need to approve that travel how many are going to this for the this is for the other trip yep okay um all in favor please say yes yes all those opposed please say no the s's have it now we will move to uh let's see the OS uh to onto the superintendent report Dr Kirby oh the OC okay yeah I think it's not a machine I got it I moved the Board of Education to approve the resolution and bylaws District vote for the Oakland County School Board Association okay um discussion just that uh every year when there's changes this is brought to you what will happen from here is your vote will be sent so your voice will be
089heard at Oakland County for the School Board Association okay any other discussion okay all in favor please say yes yes those opposed please say no the s's have it okay next we go on to this is uh this month we will not be doing attendance because inside Dr damage's report is a discussion about attendance and the grave concern that we have over the attendance that it's occurring so um we are we will be bringing to you when we talk about Staffing some ideas of things that we can do to reach out and today we actually met with a parent uh a parent commitment provider to talk about different ways to improve attendance I also want to briefly respond to just a few things number one Hazel Park schools is proud to be doing um navigate
090360 which is a threat Assessment program I think my principles here too could uh acknowledge that we are overtime on dealing with students per the law and threat assessments as well as it's really helping us to look at kids individually one-on-one and provide support services whether that mean discipline coming to me e or whether that means that students are hooked up with social services and so we're really uh Corey back here is the one that's overseeing it and working with our psychologists and social workers we've been commended very much so as a matter of fact this week there'll be a training for all Sykes social workers principals to provide some extra social emotional learning support that can be used after school and students much like what Mrs nastassi does in her building so we're really
091proud of our uh stepping up to do the risk assessments also pretty excited that Mr zernison myself both at the same time applied for air filters in everybody's room and we both received it what are you not saying know what I don't think he was first you just got called first so every classroom and office as well as additional filters will be given to the school district we're really excited I did tell them they didn't need to give us double that only one was enough for each of the classrooms so we're really excited to get that um the other piece that I just want to mention is that today we met with legislatures legislators uh with superintendents now most of my peers go to Mackinaw on a yearly basis unfortunately financially we haven't been able
092to one of the most important things that they talked about what we needed to be doing is getting out there and talking about the dollars that we need in public schools so this is what happens in Mackinac they talk about what we can get in Hazel Park they talk about what we can get federally that is how we got money to do the park districts Barn we were also in line for that for a boys and girls club and so that's what you do you got to have those relationships I encourage those that don't understand it to talk to Mr McFall and say is he more likely to deal with somebody that's hanging out with him in Mackinac island where all the legislators both state and federally will be present um I think that's it
093do you have any questions for me great don't forget about the promise Zone dinner we'd love to see you and have you there and uh um that's it that's it for me okay thank you Dr krupi you're welcome any requests for future agenda items or calendar date concerns nothing there Okay calendar dates nothing there okay and next we go to public comment anybody have anything that they'd like to say seeing none uh we'll move on to board members and administrative comments so we'll go right down the line Monica go ahead um first off I want to thank Edwards crowd today earlier um also to piggyback on Amy of course we have our promise on dinner on Monday we have about right now like 40 baskets we're doing a fundraiser basket raffle table again um so
094we hope to see everyone there we have a photo booth this year and a ton new things um I do actually want to go with what Madison said about the junior high I had so many parents who came in during those two days just thanking us for just being open and the ice cream was free so some of the Junior High kids were excited because they didn't have to spend the money um so it was super nice me and the kids played basketball and volleyball and I ripped my pants trying to show up the kids so um I did want to say that um listening to our advantage student I commend Mr Smith so much for taking the bad words and turn it into a good program and giving them a Valentine's celebration I think
095that was really cool to show the kids they don't have to be that way and they can still get good things so um thank you to Mr Smith for that um that's it okay Melissa thanks for coming out um I know that was an unusual change but you all got the memo so thank you for being here um thank you of course um Mr Smith all the kids that come out represent their schools it's hard enough as an adult to get up to the podium so those kids really need to be commended um uh welcome to Fernando I didn't catch his last name for the promise Zone and there's a lot of congratulations in order for some of our athletes like it's an incredible year for our athletes I I don't want to miss anybody
096so I'm not going to name anybody so congratulations to all those I swear I would um and I'm so sad that I can't go to any of these things anymore so I'm with you all in spirit so you know and thank you good night all right okay first of all I'd like to thank everybody that's here I enjoyed the student presentation that's fantastic I enjoyed those students got up with Mr Barnett almost said John but Mr Barnett and that they got up and spoke and that's something hard to do and they you know they learn to do that at an earlier age it's a great thing um just for those of you that don't know I just was a little upset that we had some disrespectful comments to board members especially myself being that I
097tried to address things being that I was in the hospital and uh I still have other things that I have to do and I did have my wife address that to Dr krupi so she could handle that with those board members in return they did not return her calls and so she made that attempt and so I think that is disrespectful also and so somewhere along the line we're going to have to draw a line and there can't be no disrespect at this table anymore and if there is we're going to start censoring people that's going to be the bottom line so it's just a shame that we have to do that but until everybody wants to learn to work together for the students we're going to have a problem up here so and also
098for any of you that don't know going to a Convention as they didn't bring up that they're going to a school board convention six of us are going poor Melissa can't go because she's working but there's so much to learn I've been to numerous ones in the past I was on a board for 20 years with seven different superintendents and there's always something to learn and going to Mackinaw with those politicians you meet just that one right person can make a difference it might bring us a lot of money to this District or a program or something so you never know what you can get out of going someplace and meeting the right people at the right time so just being that said there's always a chance to learn something someplace and you know going
099to either of those conventions there's six of us going to Mackinaw I mean to uh to this school board convention so that wasn't brought up but I guess it's not right for two of us to go and learn some more for our district at you know Mackinaw so um that's about really all I have to say right now for now I gotta be nice go ahead doctor I don't have anything just have a great evening all right uh what time is it here okay so can I get a motion to motion reading at 6 53 motion to adjourn all right we are
