001the district takes this safety of our staff and students very seriously and there are numerous causes for lockdowns some reasons that we might place a building in lockdown include to clear the hallways to address a student health concern to coordinate a search of the facility for a non-threat related reason to maintain order during an investigation to keep students safe during a school safety matter threat or intruder and to secure the building if a non-school-related incident occurs near the building when an individual building is put on lockdown the safety of all of the other buildings in the district is always considered most importantly the safety of the neighboring school is evaluated just because one building is put on lockdown does not mean it is necessary for the other buildings to be locked down as well it

002is important to know that none of the recent lockdowns were implemented because of outside Intruders and therefore none of the other buildings were in danger during these lockdowns in actuality all three of these lockdowns were necessitated by students making threats against an individual student a group of students or the building at Large therefore more security would not have prevented these incidents from occurring put simply these incidents will stop when student Behavior changes achieving that change requires that parents and the schools work together School violence is a community problem and it is going to take a community effort to prevent these senseless acts each of us can only guarantee the actions of one human being on this planet ourselves we can work diligently to influence the actions of others and that is what we as a

003district are doing and that is what we are asking parents to do as well in a community email last night I asked parents to take time to talk to their students about the seriousness of making threats against an individual student a group of students or a building we ask that parents help their students explore ways of resolving conflict that are peaceful and productive we ask them to please clarify with their students that all threats are taken seriously Every Act no matter how small or seemingly insignificant has consequences in today's world there is never a time that a threat against an individual student a group of students or a building is a joke while specific disciplinary actions cannot be shared under the family educational rights and Privacy Act our school handbooks and board policies detailed very

004clearly what our student expectations are regarding threats gross misconduct by students involving threats will be and has been addressed with discipline up to and including permanent expulsion from Milan area schools while there are many factors considered when disciplining a student disciplinary actions are usually more severe when a threat includes the use of a weapon board policy 5610 specifically addresses several student actions that require suspension and expulsion this policy is available on the Milan Area Schools website Milan area schools does use restorative practices however these practices are usually offered in conjunction with disciplinary action restorative practices are regularly used to facilitate a smooth re-entry when the student returns to school from a suspension or expulsion the law enforcement Community also takes these threats seriously and Prosecuting attorneys are holding offenders accountable police have been involved in

005all three of the investigations that led to the recent lockdowns and when legal charges are appropriate they are sought when communicating with families during and after an event the district must be careful with what information we provide we have to consider the rights of everyone involved the accuracy of the information being provided and the effect that releasing information can have on the ongoing investigation we understand that some parents would like to receive updates from their students during a lockdown each building has a cell phone policy in place student use of cell phones during a lockdown situation can hinder the investigation and can actually increase the potential safety risk at hand a student who is texting or using social media during a lockdown is not focused on the classroom environment and might miss important directions in

006a more severe safety situation the student could be a co-conspirator that is sharing information with the bad actor the district thanks you for your patience and understanding during these difficult situations we will continue to provide transparency within the restrictions created by the laws and policies that we operate under and we implore that our community and our parents assist us in helping change the behavior of the students that enter Milan area schools thank you Mr Garbo next up on the agenda is public comments just a reminder here this meeting is a meeting of the Board of Education in public for the purpose of conducting the school district's business it is not to be considered a public meeting there are two times for public participation during the meeting as indicated in the agenda when addressing the board

007you'll be asked to state your name the board determines the amount of time granted to individuals or groups to speak each person shall be allowed to speak for up to three minutes I will give you a 30 second warning and I'll ask you to finish your thought when the timer goes off board members May question speakers but are not obligated to answer questions or make statements or commitments in response to issues raised by the public in general such items will be referred to the superintendent for advisement investigation study and or recommendation or designated as future agenda items for board consideration so if you would like to address the board we'll ask you to come to the podium are there any students who would like to address the board at this time all right are there

008any members of the public that would like to address the board hi Holly blade I wanted to thank superintendent gearbaugh for that update um if ma'am if you have something you can you can leave it on the table oh okay thank you thank you for offering to give that to them um so be before the lockdown happened this week we've had a group of parents who were growingly concerned about things that were going on in the schools and we've come to you guys a few times and we've discussed it especially the bullying and all of that and then we actually raised money in the community to purchase books for all of you you did a book study a year ago we came to you with bullying concerns you at one point told us that it

009wasn't true and then decided to do a book study for four months on a book that was specific to LGBT bullying um we listen to it at all your board meetings you went through all the chapters together as a board and read through it together and discussed it openly at the meetings we are today officially requesting that you do a new another book study on why Meadow died and this is a book written by a few different people who did a lot of research about what happened in Parkland Florida that led up to the shooter who killed 13 people and I believe injured 13 more um there's a bunch of parents who've read this book they've read some of the stuff and employees of the district they see a lot of similarities here we think

010it's really important if you think that this book is garbage because you don't agree with where it's coming from great read it and prove that to yourself and us that's all we ask is that you read it we're supplying copies of the book for all of you to have so you guys can do that as a board book study in front of us like you did with the other book that you chose to do all we're asking is that you do that we have a petition already in the community with different stakeholders throughout Milan we have over 150 people who have signed it asking you to do this um communication all the different dynamics that go on with during a lockdown we don't know that we we understand that there's a lot of moving parts

011to that but there's also a lot of moving parts to what came before the lockdown what's happening inside the school and the environment that's taking place and being created and the way that different restorative justice practices and discipline is being done and the bullying issues that are taking place and how your staff feels that they're supposed to deal with discipline and behavior issues all of that leads up to when we get to a point where kids are putting us into lockdown so is it a partnership absolutely you can partner with us with our with the community to reassure Us by showing us that you're willing to listen to us and say if nothing else we will do this book study for you we will spend five or ten minutes at the next couple of board

012meetings discussing the chapters to just show that we're actually reading the book and that we're taking these perspectives into consideration so your books are there for you thank you thank you Miss Wade are there others my name is Jeremy Ostrom I come to you this evening to address a growing concern in public education the school will be teaching teachers it's the following how to hide lgbtq information from their parents which is part of the lgbtq student project the Michigan Department of Education is now encouraging teachers to help children keep secrets from their parents especially that of their identity it used to be a privilege for teachers to educate children now some view it as a right to indoctrinate them we want our kids to be educated not indoctrinated to whatever world view their teachers possess

013our children come to school to learn basic life skills like math English History and the like parents have entrusted teachers to accomplish these to accomplish teaching these skills to the best of their ability however from this lgbtq student project initiative it is clear that teaching basic life skills has been set aside moreover teachers are encouraging children to hide important things from their parents the Bible gives us a summary of God's will for creation in the Ten Commandments all of which are written on our hearts whether you are a Christian or not the fourth Commandment says honor your father and your mother this means that we should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents or other authorities but honor them and serve and Obey them love and cherish them

014what the school board is doing here is teaching children teaching teachers to encourage kids to cover up or hide things from their parents thus causing kids to sin against their parents and against God God won't let that go unpunished without repentance let me State emphatically that neither Public Schools nor government own our children what they but this is the point now isn't it to brainwash your children and parents to thinking and believing that the state owns our kids that the government knows what's best for our kids as opposed to what God's order of creation and his will is that wouldn't that couldn't be farther from the truth we are God's children he created us he gives us everything that we need in this life as long as we confess that he is our father The

015Lord's Prayer teaches us this how how to come to God and what to ask for him for God sustains us not the government Saint Paul writes in First Corinthians 6 19-20 you are not your own you were bought at a price periods for Millennia have taught their children that they can come to them and talk to them about anything if they can't come to them to talk about anything it's because they feel shame let's Define shame because I think it's the definition has been lost shame is a painful emotion caused by the awareness of having done something wrong or foolish shame comes from the failure to adhere to the Commandments which is written in our hearts it's called sin but is confession and Absolution through Christ Jesus not hiding and covering up our sin they

016don't come to school to be forced to sin against their parents by keeping secrets from them 30 seconds please find it in your hearts to confess the Grievous sin you are perpetrating on our children and seek God's mercy for the wickedness that he you commit against them thank you Mr Ostrom [Applause] hello my name is Mike Charter and first I would like to thank the board for your dedication for coming down here and keeping things together I appreciate that and I also would like to thank the community for all their concerns and coming down here and voicing our opinions for the sake of our children each and every one of us we all hold that as a common Bond I have many concerns as everybody in this place does in their individual to this to

017where they are at with the school I I personally came in here and saw a few things that I was concerned about in uh in my child's development through this school I entrust my child with you thank you for taking that to your heart thank you for understanding that and thank you for seeing every face in here and every face has a child in here I believe and thank you for taking on that responsibility thank you [Applause] oh I'm sorry hi my name is Jamie mcelvaney I am here to let everyone know that Milan High School has been ranked in the top 10 nastiest schools in the state for the worst of the worst sexually explicit books um we have a email here from Mr gearback that states that the district's media specialist Miss Kathy

018mean who's been the media specialist for 18 years oversees the selection of materials for the school library she holds a master's degree in library and information science and she reviews the materials for age-appropriateness he also said that Milan area school media centers provide a wide variety of resources to support and fulfill the intellectual educational cultural and recreational needs of their students materials provide provided offer new opportunities for children and teens to expand their minds and experiences and develop skills necessary for the future children and teens have the right to find the information they choose every book I'm about to read is a one sentence from each book that is here in Milan High School after I texted Paul goodnight I got under my covers took off my underwear and then put a pillow beneath my

019legs I can orgasm about 50 different ways it's nerdy and the dirty she orgasmed in my mouth as I lay there on my stomach with her vagina six inches below my face and her bare legs on each side of my head I tried to remember my old life that's nerdy and the dirty I was using my right hand to stroke my penis while my left hand pressed against the wall of the very small shower to steady myself nerdy in the dirty I mean I like giving Paul blow jobs sometimes I just keep swiping through the pictures touching myself my underwear are drenched and it's so gross like the more sexual and disgusting I am the more my body gushes Court of mist and fury he hissed at the contact and slid a finger inside me

020I let out a moan so loud it drowned out the rain as he slid a second finger filling me his groans plunging his fingers deeper and harder his tongue swept in moving in a way that I knew exactly what he'd do if he got between my legs his fingers plunged in and out slow and hard I wanted to do that when I felt how drenched you were at the court of nightmares his eyes held as he took those fingers to his mouth and sucked on them genderqueer I can't wait to have your [ __ ] in my mouth I'm going to give you the [ __ ] of your life then I want you inside me and that goes along with oral sex pictures also genderqueer I really never that really never occurred to you to put something inside

021your vagina not even your finger ooh no why would I do that well because you do that so you can taste it and that's what picture of the vagina slime push this is about a daddy raping his seven-year-old little daughter I think my daddy is the white [ __ ] drips off his dick he says lick it precious lick it I feel a hot Cha-Cha when he's [ __ ] me in my [ __ ] my [ __ ] is popping like grease in a frying pan my [ __ ] swells up when I think about my daddy my daddy sucks me up oh I come now he pumps my [ __ ] in and out I want to say I'm a child but I'm just my [ __ ] is pumping like grease in a frying pan all boys aren't blue you told me to take my pajamas

022off which I did you stood in front of me fully erect and said taste it you got down on your knees and told me to close your eyes and started giving me a [ __ ] and that was half of the papers that I have today I'll finish up [Applause] hello my name is George Elder and I went to the robotics competition with my daughter Layla and Olivia and Miss Arroyo I'm not sure if my pronounced her name correctly but these girls done good but they didn't have no tolls no toolbox nothing for their competition to fix their wheels or they had one wrench one screwdriver so I took it upon myself and I got them a toolbox with some tools for the Roblox competition they represent our school just like the swim team does just like

023the soccer team does just like this football team does they need the tools for Success too so my buddy from Jack's Hardware that owns Jack's Hardware he sold me a hundred and twenty five dollars worth of tools for one penny so I like to give this to the board to give the robotics program so they have the tools for Success that they need thank you thank you Mr Elder are there others [Music] good evening Andrea benink and I would like to give the board and the community an update on the most recent Pac meeting that we had it was in November but we didn't have a meeting due to Thanksgiving break at the end of November and so I'll let you know what we've got going on now again there's still a need for all

024districts within wisd to have representation and so I recently presented at the public school agency's meeting and the special education administrators meeting for the wisd and I was the purpose of those meetings was to give them more information about the pack as well as update the administrators of each local school district as to what the pack is what our vision is for the upcoming year and what our priorities are are one of the visions that the pack has as it's being rebuilt is to collaborate with districts within the wisd to collaborate with the wisd itself and to work with our families in our local communities to allow for stronger special education policies that will better serve all of our student populations we're hoping that our pack reps can act as a liaison between the districts

025the wisd and the families to share resources to share information to facilitate communication and some of that collaboration happens here in Milan with me I have monthly meetings with Juan Smith at that time we share different information with each other through the wisd and he also lets me know what's going on in Milan school districts with the special education programs and services provided I recently created and shared a flyer with Mr Smith to distribute to the building TCS and that flyer has different resources for families it's got extracurricular activities that could potentially be of interest to families different support groups that could be of interest to families and so my hope is that Mr Smith will distribute those soon to the teacher consultants in the buildings so that those can go home with students and

026get into the hands of families who need them uh the pack has various priorities for the next year one we're working to update the wisd parent handbook it's a resource guide that shared with all districts and ideally we'd love to have a physical copy get into the hands of each student and each family at their initial IEP meetings not every family has access to the internet not every family has access to printers to print out this information so if we can get a physical copy to every family with IEPs that would be fantastic 30 seconds our biggest task for the Academic Year of 2022-23 is to advise the wisd on their special education plan as that is up for review and revisement this year and so we are diligently working to connect with our districts

027and our special education administrators so that we have valuable input as to how that plan will impact each district we would also really like to create a flyer or a handout on the pet on the pack to share with our districts so that families know who their reps are who they can communicate with if they have questions or concerns thank you for your time thank you Miss Manning thank you for your time I appreciate the collaboration that we have here oh I apologize I hit the wrong button on the timer I apologize for that Janet McFall stakeholder taxpayer so I want to address the issue of safety you've heard from myself many times I've since June written I've talked about the issue of safety and through right here doing public comments and letters that I've

028written how we need preventive measures measures such as this step of giving paraprofessionals keys to lock the doors to keep their students safe if we have a lockdown the recent lockdown there were students that were not safe because the pairs had still not been given keys I represent the peer professionals and they are now having to experience fear on the job they love the students and they love their jobs but now safety is not being taken seriously even though you say it is they even have their husbands telling them they want to quit their jobs they want their wives to quit their pair of jobs because they're worried about their safety so there's been a situation here at the high school I'm a student I will not name names of course but a student was

029sent away to juvie for three months for situations where he had his hands on a gun he threatened his family with a gun he shot he fired shots in Ypsilanti at someone there were other and she says but he took a gun out of his family's gun case this same same student is now coming back to Milan High School there are not safety measures being put in place there's no metal detectors when he comes in in the morning a parent bringing him there are not um you know like a maybe some a police officer escorting him in um these are like just basic measures to keep everybody's safe we don't want this student to be thrown to decide we want the student to have education but these measures of safety have to be put in

030place um some parents have to be alone with him in a room during some of the hours and the student has shown that he does not have respect for women you say you care about the student safety yet they're still not a plan in place for making sure that the pairs can lock the doors and keep the students safe so it's becoming clear that there is no thought for the student body even and for the students who have shown to be a high risk 30 seconds and being allowed to put these staff and students of the entire high school at risk thank you for listening thank you Miss McFall yeah I do want to make it clear that the weapon that she discussed was never on school property and we do have measures in place

031to make sure that that student is searched before he comes to school came today just to speak as well on the topic of student safety recently I found myself on the internet having spent hours looking at safety protocols and trying to find them on the Mylan website trying to locate where the emergency preparedness documents are just trying to see what our policies are looking at other districts surrounding us I work in the Dundee District as well and just assessing the school I have my children enrolled in myself before I open my mouth to say anything or what I believe I guess before I said anything about how I feel you are treating the safety protocols I moved here from down river I drained my bank account to buy a home in Milan I wanted better

032for my children I wanted a small town feel I wanted safety I didn't want them in the quick City I didn't want them put at risk on The Daily and in schools that had metal detectors and in districts where these things were needed that's why moved here and now I am once again in a position where I feel as though my children are not safe and I am trying to help the best I can and trying to present solution rather than just problem and this is why I have looked so hard for our policies I can't find them in anything that you've provided to us I've looked over the weapons policies I've looked over the Neola policies they are out of date some of them go back to 2014. some of them go back to

0332019 and everyone that I went through said that it would be in accordance with the plan for emergency preparedness but I could not find that and I don't know what that is um I am I have also read that on average a 200 000 square foot building can have blueprints blind spots and reports ready for security in less than a week I came to a school board meeting I don't even know a few months ago and heard somebody say something about us possibly having someone do an assessment for us or maybe I misheard or maybe there was some type of security assessment going on I didn't see anything I don't even really know 30 seconds if that was true but in response to what the superintendent said I do not believe that it is the

034parents responsibility to talk to our children about what not to do in school and not to you know not they we already are having these conversations what I mean is we can't do that any more than we're already doing that and the ones who are doing that with their children those are not the kids you guys are running into in the schools that are doing this and that's just proven you you listen to interviews those parents had no idea their children were moving in that direction we need you guys to put a plan in place that's why we entrust you with our children I'm doing what I can I know I'm doing what I can I know most of us are doing what we can we're looking to you for help because after these these

035lockdowns have happened I I am scared for my children so I just I want it better thank you thank you we do have an Emergency Operations plan that is not shared on the website as most districts do not share it because it holds confidential information as to how we will handle situations the policies that we have in place are updated as recommended by legal counsel and by the national policy company Neola so those policies are up to date some of them don't need to be updated annually they're updated when laws change and when things need to be updated we did have an evaluation of our buildings we actually received very high marks on the area of our procedures and our Emergency Operations plan that's a draft version of that document right now I have a

036meeting in the next couple of weeks to meet with that company to receive the full feedback and then we'll be implementing any suggestions that they have using the safety dollars available you are correct that there is currently a grant to have plans of the schools drawn up so that 9-1-1 has very detailed plans this district has applied for that Grant we're waiting to hear back from the state of Michigan uh good evening Jill Tousley I came here this evening to advocate for your support and ensuring that house bill 4970 which has already been passed by the house is voted on by the Senate before the end of this year the seizure safe schools legislation proposed in House Bill 4970 ensures that schools are well equipped to provide a safe environment for students living with epilepsy

037and seizure disorders as some of you know my daughter Maxine experienced her first seizure and was diagnosed with epilepsy near the end of her senior year at Milan High School on the day she experienced her first seizure at the age of 17 I did not know how to care for someone having a seizure seizures can be life-threatening and what I didn't know that day and what I didn't do that day could have resulted in a much different outcome for my kid returning her to the care of others following her epilepsy diagnosis was difficult for her and for our entire family especially knowing that like me on the day that Maxine had her first seizure most people would not know what to do we were incredibly fortunate to find a partner here in nurse Judy who

038helped us to make sure that we had a seizure action plan in file at school I'm file at school and she also assisted in training some of Maxine's teachers on how to care for her if she had a seizure at school and how to administer rescue medication which can be life-saving if needed House Bill 4970 will ensure that this is the standard Care at schools across the state of Michigan and for all students in our district moving forward that bill has four key components one is requiring School Personnel to complete seizure recognition recognition and first aid seizure response training two it mandates that schools have seizure action plans on file on the student's file and that it's available for school personnel and volunteers three it ensures that any FDA approved medication prescribed by a treating

039physician can and will be administered if needed and four it includes a Good Samaritan cause Clause because anxiety is a significant trigger for seizures I also believe it's worth noting that seizure safe schools protocol outlined in this bill can actually decrease the number of seizures that occur in the school setting simply because it heightens the Comfort level of those students and it lessens their anxiety about having a seizure when they may be an environment where they think people don't know how to care for them epilepsy is not a rare condition one in 26 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime or will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime one in 10 people will experience a seizure in their lifetime there are currently 470 000 children living with epilepsy in the United States nearly

04014 000 of them are here in the state of Michigan so far this bill has been passed in 19 other states and I'm asking you to help me make sure that Michigan is the next state to pass this important legislation I prepared some packets of information for you that I left on the table back here that will help you get more information about The Spill and let you know how to contact your senators and ask them to vote on House Bill 4970 before the end of this year thank you Miss Tousley you're welcome thank you on behalf of my amazing daughter who lives with epilepsy every day and the 14 000 other kids living here thank you for helping to make sure this is passed are there others just so you're aware I'm going to

041make a motion to move the second public comments to after the closed session because of business that we have to do and the schedule that we're on so if you do have any comments that you'd like to make um please do that now unless you want to wait until after the closed session uh to make that public comment if you want you you can wait until we're going to postpone that until after the but you can have two we have to wait from after the closed session [Music] right so I'm going to make a motion to amend the agenda to move public comments um to after the closed session moved by pharaoh support by haika it's been moved and supported to move the second public comments to after the closed session or I'm sorry is

042there any discussion no psycho Frozen leecher yes Cislo yes Pharaoh yes Freight no hika yes kyger yes Macchio yes motion carries six to one all right next up on the agenda is the approval of the bills and reimbursements I need a motion to approve the bills and reimbursement of expenses moved by pharaoh support by Kiger it's been moved and supported to approve the bills and reimbursement of expenses discussion all right it's been moved and supported to approve the bills and reimbursement of expenses Miss mica yes Sarah yes Freight I abstain haika yes kyger yes ocean carries six to zero next up on the agenda is a teacher appointment I need a motion to appoint the following person to the teaching position listed and basically listed effective immediately Jules Murray from Milan Middle School Math moved

043by haika support by Rosen leacher it's been moved and supported to appoint the following person to the teaching position listed in base salary listed effective immediately discussion Mr Sizzle yes Miss Freight um I just I have a few questions and um hope that Mr gearbox could provide a little bit more clarification um as noted in here it Miss Murray will be undergoing an alternative teacher certification program that's certified by the MDA could you please clarify that or expand on that yeah so she currently has to substitute permit that allows her to teach the subject of math at the middle school in order to achieve her full teacher certification she has applied for and is participating in an alternative path to teacher certification as approved by the state of Michigan just be clear the substitute certification

044isn't in any particular area no but according to state of Michigan it allows her to substitute for up to 180 days in that position and she has taught this class previously in long-term maternity leave situations um do we know when Miss Ray signed up for this Alternative Program um and in the last month or two okay well the reason I question is and I had asked Mr just a little about this before is that we had him Mrs Jasper announced that you know Miss Murray was going to start on November 11th we had a board meeting on November 9th I'm just kind of unclear as to why we didn't go ahead and approve Miss Murray on November 9th but now we're going forward with we explained to Mrs Murray and to the mea and the

045mea was an agreement that we would not approve her until she was fully registered in the alternative certification program that was the requirement of approval yes okay so that that's where I was going with that I apologize um and her experience based on her resume is not within teaching and is not within mathematics correct she has been teaching um substitute teaching in the district for several years and for multiple times has done long-term placements I believe two of them in this same class that she's taking over and the two subjects that she's going to be teaching in her mathematics seven and Mathematics seven um accelerated correct correct and as far as I understand again clarification if need be mathematics seven um the accelerator program constitutes it um as part if not all of Algebra 1

046for the state requirement for um your high school diploma correct that would be a question for Mr McMahon I'm not exactly sure but does that get you algebra it's part of the algebra one or is it only the eighth grade one so only the eighth grade one okay um so how do we supervise the completion of the program because we have a couple other teachers aren't on this as well correct yes they have requirements through the program that we have to provide a mentor and and all of those things that we already do for all of our other new teachers um and there are components of the program that we are involved in um that are all dictated by the state of Michigan so we are confident Murray's ability to teach both those classes yes

047Mr gearbaugh if I remember correctly Miss Murray taught one of my children in one of those long-term sub positions when they were in middle school and she did a wonderful job she has a great ability to relate to the students I have no concerns with her ability to handle this position she's been doing it for a long time she's been a long-term sub in the middle school for many years already [Music] any other discussion [Music] all right it's been moved and supported to appoint the following person to the teaching position listed at the base salary effective immediately Jules Murray for Milan Middle School Math masika Rose and leacher yes Cislo yes Pharaoh yes Freight nope haika yes kaiger yes Macchio yes motion carries six to one next up on our agenda in the area of

048learning environmental culture we'd have a guest who was at a previous meeting Mr Rod Beaton he indicated that he was going to be donating these benches and they have come to fruition so Mr Beaton we would love to hear um love to hear your donation is this working there we go there you go um as you can see how much it means to this organization getting the opportunity to get you guys some buddy benches superintendent Gerber with your help and your consideration of what we've done and my wife the needs and the hard work they put together this organization raising funding and caring for this community and our children can't thank all of you here enough for being here as you can see how nice these benches will look suicide is a dangerous debilitating issue

049that happens because of all these hard-working people here we can bring it to the Forefront so those kids can sit on one of these benches someday and see that number and say hey look maybe I could call and get help we're here for that reason we care about our children in this community we care about all you guys up there and we want to thank you for the opportunity to give us a chance to be here so thank you and God bless all of you foreign [Applause] it was made possible by donations for most of the people in our organization but specifically George Elder so thank you guys for everything thank you Mr Beaton thank you anybody got any questions just so everybody knows there are two benches we'll be installing one on the high

050school property and one on the middle school property I was actually working with the two student board reps to discuss a possible good location on the high school property as they know where students might see that bench on a regular basis so we'll have their involvement in where it gets placed I will tell you my son and I enjoyed building the two benches yeah we appreciated that and they are they are very well built if I ever needed a bench I would definitely go to that company they are very sturdy and we look forward to installing them thank you all thank you very much and everyone coming out tonight we appreciate thank you very much all right next up on Communications and Community engagement is our student board representative comments [Music] Miss Farrell oh hold

055Elementary music concerts middle school and high school band and Choir concerts and many other important events that will happen between now and December 31st obviously our two student reps provided us with many more dates at the board meeting at the last board meeting I congratulated all of our fall season athletes today I want to highlight two additional performances that occurred since November 9th first our girls swimming and Diving team closed out their season with the mhsaa D3 state meet in Holland their girls accomplished a third place finish this marks the team's highest finish in 12 years and to coat to quote coach haika we as a staff could not be more proud of the effort and passion that these girls showed all year and this weekend in particular also the volleyball team prevailed over Riverview

056and five sets in the mhsaa regional semifinals and then the team played a hard-fought Regional Championship and was defeated by defined child but we are so proud of their accomplishments um last announcement December 9th staff professional development on December 9th Kim Phillips note from Project Lead Michigan Department of Education and the lgbtq plus students project will be providing professional development for our teaching staff the title of her session is addressing the needs of lgbtq plus students in order to meet the specific needs of the elementary and secondary staff there will be two sessions each session will last for approximately two and a half hours I personally had several conversations with Mrs Kim Phillips nope she understands the needs of milanary schools she will be providing foundational information on lgbtq plus students providing factual data on

057the struggles of lgbtq plus students and providing information on how staff can best support our lgbtq plus students this PD was planned to support the district's strategic plan and the Dei work Dei was a topic added to the district's PD planned by The District's professional development advisory committee it is important to know that Milan area schools will continue to uphold a policy that we will only keep information from parents if it involves the safety of the student and if the information does endanger the student our social workers and counselors will work with those students to develop a plan to inform their parents in a safe fashion for the student we have no intention of keeping information from parents I apologize that that's the comments that are being made on social media thank you thank you

058Mr gearbaugh Mr McMahon yep I have a couple uh Grant updates for you um we our application for the 35a5 grant which is section 35 A5 which is the additional instructional time grant that I've mentioned before was approved by mde in the amount of 26 238 and that's going to go towards highly qualified literacy support at third grade specifically this year and I also want to share with you that Molly Jefferson our stem teacher at both elementary schools received the foundation Grant from the Monroe Community Foundation in the amount of thirty five hundred dollars this is Molly's second year teaching stem at the elementary schools and also her second year receiving a grant from gmacf so we're really thankful for her work there what's up excellent thank you Mr McMahon board member comments Mr eight

059sorry I'm just going to call we're gonna yeah no that's okay um I didn't do it so on my apologies um my abstaining come earlier from meetings I just real quick I wasn't at the meeting so I didn't know about the meetings and there was a check issue to me it seemed kind of issue like I was approving a check so on the my abstaining if anybody wondered why it was in the finances I abstained because of the check actually being issued for me and the expenses it just made sense to me um I too am excited about our Sports I love it when our kids go out and represent Milan um it's a phenomenal experience to see how well they are engaged and how well they represent us they do a great job it

060was great to see um or hear about the Robotics and I'd like to thank you all for those of you that were there um for updating Betty and I and being there with the books Carrie and Dan the prizes and things were very well received by the community and it was great for you guys to put that all together um oh Angie you got me on card I'm sorry no it's all good um we can come back if anything important I'll let you know okay that's it thank you sir Mr Farrell I have no report Miss Geiger I have no comments this is Rosen leacher um I'd just like to say thank you to Mr Beaton Mr Elder and the group for the benches I think that's there's so many positive things about that and

061just making sure that our students have understanding access and knowing where they can seek help I'm really appreciative of that Miss machio I was going to comment on that as well um Mr beaton's group really has um always the best interests of our kids in this community at heart and they do so much more than than what you just saw tonight um incredible job so thank you to them um and I wanted to thank my fellow board members for joining in the fun at the parade and giving out books and I don't know what did I say about a hundred and somewhere around 180 yeah gave out about 180 bucks and um got to say hi to a lot of community members and that was a great event put on by the chamber so we

062thank them for including us and always welcoming us into their events as well as Mrs choosley with Mila Main Street um and I did attend the play so I wanted to say that Puffs was fantastic I really enjoyed it and just the work that goes on not just what you see on stage but we know there's so much going on behind the scenes with a parent support staff Support Tech and and everything else so wonderful job and I'm really looking forward to my Mamma Mia in the spring I think that's it for me thank you Miss Leica first I apologize to everyone for being late my the first home swim meet is also tonight so when we move school board meetings around sometimes they conflict with other things that are already on our calendars I

063also wanted to say that I saw the play as well it was amazing it was super funny it took me a minute to figure out I did it was just me I didn't understand and then once I did I thought this is brilliant it was so great to see like the whole story from a different point of view and if you saw it and you saw Alden Tuesday and his bit over here on the balcony with the bullhorn it was hilarious it was it was really funny so congratulations to all of them the cast was amazing they clearly had put a lot of hard work into it um I also want to thank the group for the Buddy benches they are wonderful and I'm sure they'll get a lot of great use and I think

064that they're super important and because it is a terrible issue that we Face here we faced it in our own Community um but I also think that it's kind of timely that we talked about this tonight and then we're also talking about the PD that we have on Friday for our teachers and lgbtq students so I just wanted to give the community some statistics because I'm a data person I really like to see you know what what does the data show that our kids need and so research suggests that among lgbtq youth only one-third experience parental acceptance with another third experiencing outright parental rejection and the last third wait until they're an adult to come out to their parents for fear of one of those two things um having at least one accepting adult can

065reduce the risk of suicide attempts amongst lgbtq youth by 40 percent just one reduces the risk by 40 percent having at least one accepting adult can reduce the risk uh sorry I had a double bullet there um transgender and non-binary youth attempt suicide less when their pronouns are respected when they are allowed to officially change the gender marker on their legal documents and when they have access to spaces that affirm their gender identity transgender and non-binary youth who reported having pronouns respected by all or most people in their lives attempted suicide at half the rate half the rate of those who did not have their pronouns respected so this training on Friday will literally save students lives and so I'm very happy that Brian in the administration is bringing it in and the Dei committee

066recommended it and I look forward to hearing how it goes on Friday and if you're looking for that data there is a survey that is conducted every year by the Trevor Project and they produce the results of their studies every year and you can watch and track the data over time through their website thank you Miss Leica I have no comments at this time uh next order of business is the appointment of a hearing officer I need a motion to appoint attorney Rob Robert dietzel of the Troon Law Firm PC to serve as the board's hearing officer for the student disciplinary hearings support by Macchio The moved by kyger and support by machio to appoint attorney Rob dietzel of Troon Law Firm PC to serve as the board tiering officer for student discipline hearings any
