001test I like to cook how professional one second please I'd like to call to order tonight's Board of Education meeting for Saline Area Schools at 6 30 and 27 seconds as you were able please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you very much um there is zero public comment tonight so let me take these few seconds to welcome uh Kevin are all a rule from Scout Troop 416 who's uh with any luck will earn a badge just for just for endurance okay um at this point we need to approve the agenda items can be added or removed or deleted sorry from the meeting agenda or the order can be changed at the request
002of an individual board member or the superintendent the agendas must be approved before proceeding further I'd like to entertain an emotion to approve the agenda as printed support was that oh yeah and Stephen supported all in favor say aye aye opposed seeing no opposition we have an agenda so there were um we've moved action items a little ahead this evening uh I have three uh items requiring action first is I'd like to um entertain a motion to approve the resolution designating Michael McVeigh is a representative of this board for the biennial election of the board of Washington Intermediate School District on Monday June 5th 2023 and Jennifer Miller as an alternate in the event the designated representative is unable to attend the motion Kirby support Stephen quick note of discussion last time we approved this
003two weeks ago but we didn't have any names attached and I hope I'm not going to make our recording secretary uh have conniptions but I already cannot make it that evening so if you want to put Jennifer Miller's name as the the primary and perhaps somebody from the table can put their name forward if nobody is available as an alternate then we'll put Betty Yankees name we can also let's just leave it the way it is so uh this time we're setting it up with names attached and if anyone does just not technically on the motion but if anyone is available as an alternate it's at 6 PM um but at this point I'm set to attend I'm available that night before so we have a backup to the backup just okay perfect thank you
004thank you but you're not going to be formally noted all right so thank you um and thank you Jenny Miller very much uh vice president I'm sorry secretary Miller well that's good well hearing no further discussion um could we have a quick vote all in favor please say aye aye aye any opposed passes 7-0 the next one is a recommend I'd like to recommend a motion to approve the amended proposal for the payment to Barton mallow in the amount of 1 million forty six thousand one hundred ninety dollars for their assistance with technology aspects of bond projects per the regular Foundation of Jay Grossman director of Technology and I'll explain this in a second is that Tim support Estep thank you thank you um quick note we had one number off which the difference was
0051 million and thirty six thousand Etc it should have been one million and 46 000 we just wanted to make sure we have the exact note the net the exact the correct number in the records and that's it any questions all in favor of approving this please say aye aye opposed all right passes at seven zero uh I'd like to uh this is uh Mr puffer on Deck uh I would uh like to uh entertain a motion to approve the awarded round two of the cares discretionary funding and the amount of 43 145 estimated by director of Community Education Brian Puffer motion Miller thank you Kirby seconds Mr puffer perhaps you can uh fill us in on this this was a fascinating read uh yes thank you I'll give you a little background for round
006two our cares board met this is our second round so the board met in March in April typically what we do I'll kind of go over it again as we meet first time discuss the grants ask any questions and we contact the group so the questions we have then after they're done what they do is each board member submits their rankings from the grant they would more most likely Awards the least likely and that's how we vote on the grants as we come down um so we had as you can see uh eight grants I believe last time and so that's how we choose which ones to vote for first so you can see we had eight grants submitted for a total of 78 449 dollars six grants were awarded for forty three thousand one
007hundred forty five uh four of them were full two were partial we do have one more round left uh we re and we have the deadlines already passed we have 11 grants that were submitted by eight different organizations so we're pretty happy it's the first time we've had three rounds since cobit so we're excited that we've been able to have three rounds this year and we did have have a little bit of a fun balance with the carriers Grant so we're hopeful for next year we'll actually up the limit right now 15 000 was the max we're gonna not be able to up that next year are there any questions for Mr puffer about these Awards fanatic question sure can you tell me who is um on the cares advisory Council right now yes um
008Chris michelak uh Rob shingle Amy McGovern Jim half and Barry Lipsy you're welcome Susan so names that I guess aren't familiar uh catch my eye um so the third eye creative management can you tell us a little more about that yeah that's a company they actually offer types A bunch of types of different classes R classes mixed media classes and whatnot they offer some through Community Ed that was turned down because you need to be a non-profit and their status has still not been approved so that's why they denied the grant hearing no further discussion I'm sorry could you name you said there's eight that did get approved because it wasn't entirely clear I mean I read through a lot of them but sure could you name which eight or is it the first date
009you should did you do you guys get this in the uh in the bottom or the back of the it's the very bad oh yeah so there the other one that did not get approved was the historical library and that one was tabled for the next year because the person somebody that great I was no longer with the school district and there was not a second person on the grant so they just got tabled for the following year hopefully thanks yep about that great any further questions thank you well well thank you okay thank you very much so all in favor please say aye thank you very much Mr puffer I appreciate that I'd like to entertain a motion uh to approve the resolution a resolution to authorized superintendent Lodge on behalf of the Saline
010Area Schools to sign the attorney-client contract to join the social media lawsuit on the terms specified in the contract this is being submitted by superintendent Lodge at the recommendation of Throne Law Firm I'll make the motion Kirby thank you support gold thank you superintendent Lodge can you fill us in on any of this yeah it's similar to The Jewel litigation that we just um did a resolution for in that uh does seek monetary compensation for I'm reading a few few statements for past damages incurred by schools related to social media epidemic created by the defendants as well as anticipated future damages so then it talks about as with the vaping litigation which was the jewel lawsuit France which is the company sort of the intermediary of between Throne that will um you know manage manage
011this they will look to discover information and then that will mean that schools will be required those that are participating with assistance from France to respond to written questions and document requests from the defendants and that this is estimated to take no more than 10 hours of time so this will take more time than the jewel litigation yet we want to follow troon's advice and and move forward with it if the board supports it are there any questions from from trustee Estep um kind of like I asked last time is there any cost to us participating in it there's no cost but they take a percentage both Troon and France if there's an award thank you we're hearing no other questions we can put this to a vote all in favor please say aye aye
012aye opposed hearing none 7-0 thank you very much there's one scheduled report tonight and that would be the Dei AC quarterly update are all four of you here tonight I think so but I think out there somewhere oh principal Washington's going to church I didn't think they were expecting us to move quite so quickly it's possible but I'm ready so all right so good evening thank you for to talk a little bit about what the deiac has been up to um there are three things on our agenda tonight in terms of sharing so first I'm going to give you an update on the deiac work we'll talk a little bit about how the deiac works and the work that it's been doing and then we'll talk about some recommendations that did the that the deiac
013has and then we'll close with looking at what's on the horizon so um first oops I wanted to put this um in uh tonight's slideshow was a last minute Edition so if you previewed it earlier it was not there because I want it to offer a reminder of Saline Area Schools Dei organizational framework and I should pause because I did not introduce myself um so um I'm Dr Shannon Washington the director of culturally responsive instruction equity and inclusion and I co-chair the DIC along with principal Laura Washington and I'm joined here today by three members of the DIC Alice kazee Tiffany Alexander and Amy teslen okay back to where I left off here so this is just a diagram to kind of situate you or actually so we can situate the DIC as part of
014a larger Dei organic organizational framework in the district I'm not going to walk through every step of it but I wanted to point out that essentially Laura and I with a conversation with Steve we kind of sketch this out um maybe almost two years ago now we sketched it out to show kind of the flow of um how feedback happens in the district and then how change can happen in the district and the deic is kind of right in the middle of that along with our individual School Equity teams and the idea is that this just kind of keeps spinning it's like um you know hopefully a well-oiled machine where we get we notice a lot of challenges needs or areas for growth and we get that feedback and then there is advice given on
015policy and implementation and Etc and it just keeps going as we work toward our goals um so here are three the three things that I'm going to do oops I keep doing that and I keep messing this up sorry the three things that we're going to talk about tonight and um it's the DIC is a committee of 20 people they are all volunteers and we meet once a month um one of the things that happened early on was we had this open house which was really a community meeting and the community meeting kind of opened our eyes as a committee to something that was really important Community engagement and having more conversations with the community and so one of the things that we've been doing in our monthly meetings is really exploring and consensus building
016around how to better and more effectively and more frequently engage the community we're really looking for how can we do that and what will it look like the second thing we've been doing is we have been working partnering with Sensei change on reviewing the three-year di action plan and so I'll talk a little bit about that and then finally the third thing we've been doing is we've been working in subcommittees on Crafting recommendations about things and areas and challenges in the district that can get us closer to our goals so here are some details about that so obviously some of you either attended or heard about we had this kind of kickoff event in the fall where we opened up the DIC to engage in some conversation and that led us to explore the idea
017of doing that more often and in order to do that we needed to come to consensus as a group in what that would look like and because we only meet once a month we don't really we haven't really had a lot of time to make that decision and Implement so we're really looking at what this will look like for next year and as a group we have come to um two possible models that we're looking at for Community engagement moving forward and we'll be talking about that actually later this month in our monthly meeting and hopefully making a decision and doing some planning for the following year the goal is pretty simple we want to generate more positive civil and meaningful dialogue between the DIC and the community and we want to find ways to
018do that where um we can really find common ground and model civil conversation the second thing is we have been engaged for the last couple of months in a review of our three-year plan and um we partnered with Sensei change as an independent um firm if you will and one of the reasons why we wanted an outside firm to come in and do it is because they helped us in the beginning to write the initial three-year action plan and because we wanted it we wanted their work to be very much so objective as people who can examine the whole system and so so far we've had by the time it's all said and done there actually might be 16 focus groups um about 245 participants and we should have a report from them within the
019next six weeks and we'll use that to update our plan um and then finally we have been working diligently in subcommittees on Crafting recommendations so this is the heart the meat the charge that the deiac takes very seriously it's our um it's really what this this committee was designed to do and that was advice and so um here's how it works there's about 20 of us and we all look at things that we are either passionate about things that we have skills a skill set in problems that we want to help solve and we partner with other people who have those same interests and then we agree to meet outside of the monthly meeting this is where it's really important to just kind of Honor that Spirit of volunteerism because people find time in addition
020to a once a month meeting to meet and we kind of meet like all over the place it's it's Zoom but it can be coffee the last Zoom meeting I did in a subcommittee there were three of us two of us were in the car we're in a car doing that and so um but there's a real commitment to doing this to doing this work and so um it's really important to acknowledge that this takes time and things don't always it's not a math problem it doesn't always get solved by clicking in variables sometimes we might it might take us five minutes to realize a problem but then it's a three-year problem and so the work that we do sometimes can move a little um slowly but it's a pretty simple process it starts with
021us asking questions about a challenge or someplace that the system needs support we try to get answers to those questions either we will ask administrators we'll ask school board members or we will do our own research and also we do benchmarking which is we will partner reach out to other school districts that may have similar situations and then we come up with a list of recommendations and so one of the things that I um wanted to do tonight was to actually provide for you an example of what our subcommittees do by giving one of our subcommittees some time in real life to offer their recommendations and so Amy Tiffany and Alice have been working on Crafting recommendations as it relates to the revision of the controversial issues policy and again they've been meeting diligently outside
022of regular meetings and collaborating and so I'm going to step away here and allow them to give their recommendations and then I will come back and close us up thank you who wants the clicker foreign much shorter than Shannon so this will have to be way down okay good evening everybody is everybody pretty much already knows I'm Tiffany Alexander uh we really appreciate the time um having the opportunity to give you these recommendations today uh first we want to inform you that the recommendations that you're going to hear are the product of work that was started uh last calendar year for school we have consulted with teachers admin other Saline Area School staff students who are on the front lines of this we have reached out to a multitude of educational and Equity institutions as
023well as other school districts and lastly we have reviewed dozens and dozens of peer-reviewed articles on this material these recommendations are well thought out and have taken a great deal of time to make we want to be clear that there is no opting out of identities that does not have a negative impact there is no opting out of identities that will not have a chilling impact on the classroom or that does not violate best practices so we are not here to encourage that the recommendations you're going to hear our recommendations for how to best mitigate the harm that comes from opting out of identities these are recommendations for how to protect students teachers staff and all those everybody else who will be impacted by this protect and support um in that Spirit it must be
024said that this policy must include continuing to encourage that teachers encourage teachers to engage the students in a way that teaches critical thinking has open communication and prepares them for the very diverse World they are going to be functioning in we would like to remind the District of the four C's of the compass which I will read to you now [Music] the four C's consist of communication collaboration creativity and critical thinking the dark blue Compass points identify oh I need glasses four primary skills that we want all of our Saline Area Schools students to demonstrate Proficiency in by the time they graduate specifically when it comes to critical thinking and problem solving students are learning to reason effectively use systems thinking make judgments and decisions based off analysis synthesis evaluation and reflection ask questions that
025lead to better Solutions and solve problems in conventional and creative ways I will hand it off to Alice I'm a little bit taller I don't like lecterns either so I'm going to stand a little bit sideways but I just wanted my name is Alice kazee I'm actually a school administrator I just got a new job I'll let you know Michelle what that job is later um because I took a year off but um I'm my role in this uh was pretty much to kind of lend that administrative ear that school ear to this group and so uh when we talk about this controvers controversial issues policy I just want to be the reminder that whatever the policy states is kind of the rules that teachers in admin need to follow and we all know we're
026really good rule followers that's why we work in schools so the the most important thing is to make sure that you support whatever this policy is that you do not place an undue burden of work on the teachers and on the admin because in this day and age when we're looking for teachers to just fill classrooms and we can't retain them and they're leaving the educational field in droves 39 of Michigan teachers are leaving the profession this is not something that we need to place on top of their plate and say well you've you've got to do this and you've got to change this and you've got to do all those things also in we all know that this is a world of social media and unfortunately teachers and admin have come under attack personally
027because of curriculum decisions that they make or things that they introduce to kids so we want to make sure that this board policy also supports them in that as well foreign recommendation is put it in writing further to the idea of a clear communication we think that parents and Guardians must specifically identify the learning activities and materials for the excusal and it needs to be put in writing specifically for reference we have had teachers comment to us and let us know that they are unsure of what the policy means currently do they have to take posters down do they have to remove Choice boards do they have to take books out of their classrooms they don't know and these are teachers who are committed to teaching in in an inclusive way so we're looking we're
028looking to have it put in writing so that it's used can be used for clarification purposes so the teachers don't have to guess at exactly what the excusal is for and also for the parents and Guardians so that they know exactly they can put it in writing and be specific and then also it can be referred back to as well the second sorry the fourth point is the follow the law I don't know if this really needs to be included in the policy but um we have seen it in the previous policy where we can't students can't be excused by law from mandated state standards and we would also based on teacher recommendations include College Board standards as well for like AP courses um and of course the application of the policy can't discriminate so
029it there really needs to be um a clear defined uh a clear definition of what is going to be excused for example consider if you're comfortable allowing a book or textbook or materials or a poster of Einstein removed from a science room because of his Jewish identity if you allow something to be excused by one identity you have to allow it for all identities for based on the Elliot Larson Civil Rights Act hello again so continuing on with how this needs to be and why this needs to be specific um and I am basically going to read this because I don't want to miss anything all opt outs must be specifically tailored to each student and family that requests it all research has clearly shown that all students regardless of their identities benefit when the
030principles of diversity equity and inclusion are both ubiquitous excuse me are ubiquitous uh in the curriculum test scores go up across the board for all students regardless to how they identify as does social emotional health any opt out hear me if I'm not like in because this is okay wonderful any opt-out cannot have the intent or impact of changing or affecting the quality quantity content or delivery of the curriculum nor can it impact the culture appearance or tone or the Free Speech within the classroom when we ask ourselves what does this look like imagine if you will if a family comes and says we want our child opted out of all heterosexual content clearly it would be impossible to equitably or even logistically do this parents must be made aware that children will see posters
031hear conversations from other children see books and other resources in the classroom that may reflect the content and identities that they want to opt out of this is what we mean by specific a parent may not make a blanket identity opt out a parent May request to opt out of a specific assignment such as in our given example a book that has a heterosexual identity the district must keep in mind however this policy cannot be applied in a discriminatory fashion if you grant one parent the right to opt out of a book because of say a heterosexual identity you must give all families the right to opt out of any identity that includes rather it is the Jewish identity an African-American identity a queer Identity or any other ethnic or cultural heritage affinity group or
032marginalized group we asked the district to be wary and use this with the utmost caution for that reason it must be clear that you may not opt out as she said of mandatory State curriculum you can also not that not opt out of teacher identities which means you cannot request to be put into a classroom with a cisgender heterosexual teacher all caution must be taken to ensure that there is no chilling impact on the classroom there must be full transparency that all classrooms and all buildings per District commitment per District policies and per Eliot Larson will have material content curriculum that reflects all of the diverse identities in Saline Area Schools and the world around us ual of one student one person's parental rights cannot negatively impact the parental rights of the rest of the
033class a teacher cannot remove choices from a from Choice boards posters from the classrooms or books that are normally read aloud all identities must be represented in all teachers classrooms which is currently not happening we would also like to caution that we found some districts in other states Maryland for example had an opt-out policy they ended up removing it because it became overwhelming to negotiate lastly we asked the district to consider per students requests that for the students to have the right to opt themselves in or opt themselves out of content that suits their needs thank you very much for your time and attention yeah so we have recommendations for the board and then we also have recommendations for the district in terms of guidelines so so really quickly we all know that board policies
034teachers don't necessarily read them and know them by heart but what they do know are the guidelines that are attached to them so we need to make sure that the guidelines are written in such a way that it is district-wide that it's clear that it's concise and that it's transparent to all because again we're not saying that parents don't have choice to opt out of things but we are saying that there needs to be a very structured process in how this happens so that we support students and staff through this process um just adding on to that um we as mentioned in the original policy we're talking about providing support and training and resources for educators that help them in the teaching of democratic process and critical thinking skills uh to approach topics that might
035be sensitive like the dress code for example things that where they have an intrinsic motivation and they have choice we also ask the district to provide resources for teachers for voice and choice in terms of learning activities and instructional materials because this also allows intrinsic motivation which has been shown to improve students learning as well as for more accessibility for students with disabilities a Universal Design for Learning is a process and that was it that was all for me okay can I have the clicker back please okay all right and I actually um I'm gonna go back so that was an example of what our subcommittees do they collaborate around a topic that they're both skilled knowledgeable passionate about and have and have um personal interest in and then they do the work to see
036how they can best use all of that information to support and advise in offer information to this system so this is a slide very similar to one that was used in your last update in I haven't changed very much but these are this is just an example of the other subcommittees that are at work and again meeting on Zoom meeting for lunch meeting in homes and having conversations about things not every subcommittee will give their report um in an oral presentation to you sometimes for instance you'll get a report in writing if it's to the school board and more than likely what will happen is um Laura and is co-facilitators we will be meeting with a large group later this month and our goal is to collect all of the recommendations from the different subcommittees
037and to deliver them to where they're appropriate so some of them will be appropriate to the school board or to a subcommittee on the school board some will go directly to Dr Loch um we've actually already set up a meeting with the high school principals because one of the students on the deiac has crafted a list along with one of the other adults they have a list of recommendations that are specific to the high school and then Laura and I as the co-facilitators it's our job to follow up on those recommendations and to see how how we can continue to support them or what work needs to be done yet so moving from here our work in May and June and maybe a little bit into August will be to hopefully wrap up those recommendations
038and then finalize our three-year plan and update the plan and then one of the things that happens with the DIC well this will be the first time it's happened is that each member is in a two-year term and this will be the the first end of the first two-year term of our original group and so we may experience some turnover and with that then the co-facilitators along with the school board and Dr Loch will have to get together and repopulate the committee and then kind of start the process of all of that all over again so um at this time we will conclude and take any questions you might have it's from the board starting with our student representative and Then followed by Susan Easton so I was just curious how we would very like
039diversity Equity inclusion Curriculum by class I'm just curious if like you know I took brace ethnicity where you were one of the guest speakers and like obviously that I feel like there's a clear curriculum but I'm also wondering if like in science class we can talk about different stuff like of how women have been infected or like how people of color in that fields are like treated differently and like how that can be applied to different scenarios in a diverse way that's a really good question thank you for that um one of the things that we've worked on it's not necessarily the DIC as a whole but it's actually um kind of in partnership with the teaching and learning team in here just working in the district with all of the teachers we've been working
040on every teacher becoming more culturally responsive and the idea behind that is to recognize that kids learn best when they see themselves in the curriculum and that there is there is no subject no topic no curriculum where um any student can't find themselves there's a story for everyone and so we've asked teachers to not only look for mirrors for children but also to look for Windows so that they can step inside of the world of other people people different from them so there is opportunity for that but you also have to recognize that every teacher is on a journey to figure out how to become more culturally responsive and so not every teacher is going to be operating in the same way at the same Pace with the same capacity you're going to have some
041teachers who are very far along in making their work very culturally responsive and some teachers were just starting but our goal is that here in Celine if you are a good teacher you are a culturally responsive teacher and so we're all learning about what that looks like even in science and even in math and even in places where it seems more obvious like language arts and social studies and then just a follow question I think this is just a one-off comment but I took AP testing last week and I think my fight or flight is just like on I was curious you said something about AP classroom looking like AP classes looking a little different than other ones maybe I was just curious what you meant for that did I say that someone did I
042don't know okay um I don't I'm not exactly sure what you're referencing to anybody okay something there okay good thank you oh okay yeah yeah no it we just meant that you can't um yeah the curriculum you can't opt out of AP standards so yeah I mean uh college board standards yes okay I'm sorry now I understand yes so for instance if you are taking an AP US History Class that curriculum is not designed here locally it's not designed by the teacher it's not designed designed here by um Saline Area Schools it is designed and mandated by the college board and so to opt out of something designed by the College Board actually puts your AP score in danger mm-hmm so um this is more of a comment um I want to personally thank you
043all for taking the time um to uh as a Dei advisory committee to collect all of this feedback and spend time on this um this controversial issues policy the first deiac in 2019 um it was sent there um and you know I don't think enough time was was spent on it to actually receive feedback and then also the deilc in 2020 um had a short conversation about it as well so I'm just so excited about the um you know the research the um the feedback from the Educators um because that's something that the committee has been um wanting to seek more of so I'm glad that um individuals were able able to get some of that in our school administrator on the committee as well congratulations [Laughter] um it's very helpful um and so I
044just wanted wanted to to thank you all for um you know it's research based and um that you that you were very thorough and yeah thank you yeah they I mean they've been a wonderful example of how our subcommittees work it might seem a little organic at first where people are just like hey I want to talk about this and then someone else is like me too and me too and then the next thing you know you have this road map to advocating for something and so I also appreciate the work that they've done and all of the other subcommittees busy at work and you you're absolutely right the first two iterations of the Dei committee um definitely took on this topic and and others and these things take time they take building structures and
045Pathways and you have to have some resiliency and stamina and I think that's what Celine is building in this work is that resiliency and stamina to see things through and then to be willing to make adjustments as we grow thank you all right so I want to make sure this this comes through all right so first of all I also want to thank the the team right two-year process and the time you talked about the the time to do it and that is incredibly valuable to me as a trustee I want you to to know that okay I think about a few things and I think I I really appreciate the recommendations of the deic and I do want them to live and I want them to be real so I think about when your
046subcommittees make a recommendation to wherever it's it sounds like your recommendations get made to the person who is closest to being able to to take that work on am I correct yes correct we try to make Laura and I will try to determine that it's usually pretty obvious but then sometimes it's not so yes we try to do that so so I think about a few things I think about I think about bandwidth right about stretching of our our leadership teams our our staff our you know I think about financial and finance and budget like you know things that would be uh would have to be planned for accordingly and you know and then validating the expertise of our team members so I guess what I'm saying is when you make those recommendations as a
047subcommittee do you try to give like this is our wish list but like we prefer them in this order can you give me some thoughts on how that process occur yeah that's a really good question so this is really the second year of this committee and so we are testing this process right and so I will give you an example of um the probably the best example I have of how it has worked and it started last well yeah I think it started last year where we wanted to look at the intersection of the hate speech in Acts guidance and the acceptable use policy and so there was a group of people who worked on making sure that that was Equitable and that kids were getting the most they can get out of the implementation
048of those two policies when it came to discipline and education and restoration and so that we took that and took it to the the instructional staff all the principals and sharing that with the principals and just saying hey look at these two policies this is what the diaac is saying these are the needs here's what they're suggesting can you all work on this and see you know if we can kind of do better with these two areas and immediately that group the principals got to work on looking at their handbook looking at the policies and talking about okay so if a student uses a piece of technology and they use the school Wi-Fi for hate speech which of the policies do we use first and how does that discipline look those conversations take time and
049it actually takes a little experience having to live through that and then you go back and see oh here's how we can be more clear here's how this should work here's how we can better Implement that so now I would say we're on the second year of looking at handbook policy and how it relates to school board policy and state law and federal law and making sure that we are really aligning all of that but it's a it's a process and I would say that's the closest thing to um I think after this summer our handbooks and the work that our principals do you'll see that it started with the recommendation about those two policies that were seemingly unrelated until you know kids figure out how to make things relate that don't relate so um
050so it's kind of started with that and then um and I give a lot of credit to our principals because they ask really good questions and then they help us kind of focus in on how can we support you so that's that's just one example but do we kind of want to like throw things at the wall and see what sticks sometimes that's what it might look like because the DIC is made up of people from a variety of organizations right so we have people from corporate we have people from legal we have people from higher ed and we have people who have never worked in the bureaucracy of public service and so they will oftentimes come up with ideas and recommendations that would be great at Ford Motor Company but will not work at
051Woodland Meadows Elementary school right and so sometimes yes there's these great ideas but how do we make them work in our organization and within the confines of this is a bureaucracy it's it's not a corporation it's not an entrepreneurship and so that sometimes we will throw some things out there and they just they might not stick this year and it might come back two three years later before we can really make it work hmm I just have a fast question with regards to the application process and the turnover that you had mentioned how many seats are up I actually don't know and um we're actually meeting with our two board reps coming up because the way the policy is written um it says that a person can serve two-year terms consecutively with a limit of
052two two-year terms and so it's not exactly clear yet so we'll be working on that so that we can know how many seats will be open there'll also likely be some natural turnover where people their schedules will change and will not be able to continue to volunteer so that is to be determined so you know the LA the junior 24th meeting I kind of brought up uh like what comes to the board and so it's kind of like the transgender non-binary policy obviously 2240 there's work being done on that and uh so forth the three-year plan did that does that ever come to the board or does that not come to the board I mean obviously has a big impact on our school district yeah that's a really good question so the three-year plan the
053original three-year plan was born completely out of the community it started after the Snapchat incident in 2020 where um the district hosted a series of community conversations Community listening sessions they were facilitated by Sensei change and some other volunteers and that information from all of those Community conversations was collected and processed into some recommendations so that's the first part the second part to that was there were three groups of people that made demands of the district one of them was Celine parents Against Racism the student Society for resistance and then the original zei committee made a list of asks or demands or suggestions of the district so under the leadership of Scott Graden and since they changed and a couple of other volunteers they kind of took all of that chart paper those List of
054Demands all of those notes and they put it into this three-year action plan and the plan the purpose of the plan was to serve as a document that represented the voice of the community it was not written by teachers it was not written by administrators it was there was more student voice in it than teacher voice than administrator voice and um it it's kind of this portable um this is what the community was saying to you in 2020. so if you want to know what the community wanted in 2020 this is what they wanted the process that we're in now is looking at okay so one of the things that was in that plan was that every school should have an equity team and so every school has an equity team but then what we
055realized was the teachers and administrators and support staff who serve on those Equity teams their voices were not a part of that original plan unless they came to one of the community conversations which were open to the public not just Educators and so we were very intentional to host focus groups in every school staff meeting so that teacher voice can become a part of the next iteration but it is still overwhelmingly written by the community with student voice and now with teachers in educator voices part of it it was never intended it's not law it's not rules it's not policy it was supposed to remind us of what the community said we needed to do so that things like what happened in 2020 happen less frequently or not at all yeah I saw it the
056last board meeting um we had the curriculum update and it was mentioned numerous times in the curriculum update the three-year plan so I was just wondering if this is something that will come to the board or should come to the board yeah if guidance um it is uh it's advice it's probably 250 people collaborated to put that together so it represents their voice um and it's not it's something that we use to in the diac um to remind us of the things we wanted this community to look at when that incident occurred when those incidents occurred but it's not it it truly is more like a tool a handbook a lens than a rule book mandates or policy if I could add on to that trustee Austin ultimately the teaching and learning department is determining
057which components of that can be implemented and so ultimately it's what comes out of the teaching and learning Department in terms of curriculum that potentially is coming to the board if we're looking at you know for example at the high school New courses and or textbooks adoptions and things like that so it you know as Shannon mentioned it's recommendations But ultimately the teaching the learning department is responsible for implementing curriculum and so forth with that foreign so uh I was also just thinking about the three-year plan and because of the way it's made up eventually the things bubble to the board so so as you have a focus and you work on that then you make a recommendation to the board so the three-year plan might not be presented to be approved by the board
058but the the work that is the result of that three-year plan will often come in the shape of recommendations or proposals um so a couple of things first um being an educator in a different District I'm always really kind of jealous of the fact that we have a director of culturally responsive instruction equity and inclusion want to make sure I get that all um and a deiac because the the guidance and the education that all of you provide for our students our staff and our community is profound and immeasurable and without tools like that um you know people are left to their own devices a lot of times and so I just appreciate the work that you're doing to support um learning and um and our staff and and our community too I appreciate the
059the work that you've done um the listening sessions um and I want to also remind my colleagues here on the board that um in addition to those listening sessions and the meetings that you've conducted there has been a survey and so um there's been a lot of opportunity for um for input and for people to share their thinking around around the work that's happening through the deiac um I I want to also just say that I appreciate the team that's here tonight and the team that you represent um and that when you do make recommendations we are reading them and we are looking at them and we are um considering how they apply and and whether they're part of policy or administrative guidelines or curriculum and all of those pieces so thank you for your
060voices and I just want to um just confirm that confirm or affirm I guess that we are listening and and that we appreciate that you have the time and the expertise to do some of that deep digging so that we can then take those pieces instead of I guess looking at the entire heap of things we can kind of look at um look at pieces and then dig deeper into those pieces so thank you I guess it's not really a question but just some comments and just some appreciation thank you trustee Miller any others on the table well thank you for I really appreciate all of the hard work and heavy lift that you've done and I know that the policy committee will take your advice or your words under advisement so thank you best
061we have thank you thank you yeah I should I should mention that the guidance has been shared with us prior to this evening too and so that's been helpful thank you thank you very much thank you thank you thank you and thank you I guess the next part is mine now um and thank you very much for your tolerance I think it's I got it down to 18 or 16 slides and with any luck uh we'll get through it very quickly and I do have some notes again I don't like I don't want to go too far off so in April let me just test the system out here good in April um the Chief Financial Officer for the Washington Intermediate School District Brian Marcel gave his annual budget uh report via Zoom I was
062in attendance and I'm going to share some of the highlights with you so this is a a new one for you um uh Dr gold so yay um so in the slide deck that came as part of your board pack you saw uh hundreds or many many graphs and charts related to two separate wisd budgets but we are only required to approve or disapprove of the general fund budget and this special education budget for wisd by the way is five times the size of this one so as part of the um the Michigan revised school code all districts across the state are required to review the budget each year following a strict timeline and we can submit concerns in a note to wasd and they will take they will take them under advisement so to
063provide a quick overview the wisd is an intermediary between the Michigan Department of Ed and each of our nine districts they provide many many services that we simply could not afford to maintain as a single smaller District so in addition to increasing our ability to improve student achievement they also have the capability to get the resources that we need at the federal level so now on this slide and there we go on this slide and the next three slides are just some of the many projects and activities that they have engaged in on our behalf and you have already seen we'll just pause for a second for you to glance at some of those um and and of course we learned about my future fund last week and finally uh they in addition to our
064school safety spending they have done a lot of larger projects uh critical incident mapping Etc so on to the budget so in these two slides in this slide it's the bottom three bars that we're really focusing on uh the expenditures are in fuchsia and the revenues are in blue and there's a tiny tiny gap between the two which we'll find out about in just a second so the resources come from our five main areas and they're detailed in excruciating detail in the board packet um in effect the major changes to the revenue this year come from an increase in property taxes the ISD operations funding is from the state is up four percent uh they've added in transfers from from the the districts to support a county-wide Career Technical education director position I'm not sure
065who that is I'm sure if any of you know there's a decrease in federal revenue due to the elimination of a grant and some other information if you're really interested in asking questions about 31n I will send all of those questions to our Chief Financial Officer Miranda owsley that CTE position has oh it has not yet been created interesting hmm thank you um give me one sec that threw me for a loop so we also have some general changes to the expenditures as well expenditures are lower due to Grant changes and uh they they did add the position of the CTE director I'm not sure when that starts and this is an interesting question that we should be asking um uh superintendent Norman and there's also an elimination of a possible elimination of a grant
066but it could be extended for another year the expenditure changes also talk about all it is make several assumptions that all vacancies are filled and that all steps are met and there's a two percent salary wage increase based on bargaining agreement and Health Care is increased by 4.4 percent so onto the graph now we like to see ours in percentages when we talk about fund balances and theirs are in millions of dollars they have a targeted goal of 3 million each year if you see that and if you look over toward 2013 2014 there were a number of changes to the mipsers that that caused the fund balance to get eaten away and they did some major spending out of their budgets to replace technology but over time it's been gradually building you'll also notice
067that in the last two years 4.35 3.67 those numbers are projected at this point but they are that's what they're aiming for that 5.245 sorry that 5.2 farther where we are now will probably drop as the fiscal year comes to a close because they they do have more bills to pay and this budget is required before the end of the fiscal year that's why it's always a little a little awkward and uncomfortable so for example this is a a chart which they like to share with us their budgeted amounts are usually the row at the the fuchsia color the reddish color at the bottom um that's a little under but by the time the fiscal year actually ends we're always a little higher as as much as 225 255 000 I believe that worked out
068I think that's what that was yeah finally there's more detail and again if you want to see any excruciating detail the the actual expenditures down to the the bucket you can see that and of course they offer a great deal of information for us and uh if I could oh there you go it's a thank you um if there are any specific questions I think Miranda might be able to ask him I might answer them I might be able to answer a few right now but my personal recommendation is to approve this budget but I will gladly forward any notes of concern to superintendent Norman's office are there any questions that I might and I'm always terrified because finances I'm at Rough open water when it comes to finances but I will try my very
069best to answer any questions sir I will just ask one question so the 4.35 percent prediction that falls below the five percent quote-unquote trigger for school districts does the ISD have to so if just so you know it's a the percentage-wise I see now I got it I'll give you I I did look percentage-wise it in percentage terms and I did I've left that once of all the sentences I wrote down that's the one I left out the fund balance should reach about 12. now I did ask them the the Brad gerby question that I anticipated uh about bulletin 1041 uh where do they rank in terms of but they're about 65 percent of their budgets go to classroom instructions I asked why I couldn't find that in bullet in 1041 they said every ISD
070does it a little differently and the the bulletin just said we give up we're not even going to try to compare apples to kumquats so uh they you won't see that information but you can ask uh uh um Brian Marcel directly what did I say 65 I asked them directly that a question and he said it was around 65-ish percent no you know I looked at that a few times I was sure it was five percent and you're right it would have had it been a percentage it would have triggered an alert to the if two two successive years yeah you're fine are there any other questions thank you so much and I will note that trustee Austin asked some very challenging and tricky questions uh before the meeting and I want to thank him
071for those but at what point I really did thank goodness uh Miranda owsley was in the room and she she helped you out with the answers uh so I'll enter I'd like to enter as chair president I'd like to entertain a motion to approve this budget as you understand it it's probably the best way to put that so moved and that would be sorry I missed the Jenny J Miller okay support Stephen yes thank you very much all in favor please say aye aye opposed hearing no opposition we will pass this on to I will there is a document that our secretary will need to sign uh if you don't mind one second just before we hear a report from the policy committee I would like to to make a quick statement if that's acceptable
072so before secretary Miller shares your report I do want to note that the entire policy committee has been especially accommodating of parents in the community by moving their scheduled one-hour meetings that usually have preceded the main board meeting in order to allow more time for Community input especially on one policy in particular which you've heard a great deal about this evening and from the reports I know that and we already heard that they have listened carefully and from what I understand the committee not only changed the name of the controversial issues policy we'll be finding out more about that later a name this is a this board was never satisfied with but they've also added a great deal of clarity to the language at this point and I know it's still in revision and I
073just wanted to say thank you for that hard work I wanted to thank all the members of the policy committee by name Susan Estep Lauren gold Jennifer Miller for moving forward in his transparent away as possible and I am looking forward to the next iteration of this policy when the time is right when you're ready to share it with us so thank you very much for all of your hard work and I'll let you do your quick report thank you um so just a couple of of notes we met last on May 1st and um our next upcoming meeting will be May 23rd we are moving this month back to our pattern that had been happening previously to meeting before the second board meeting of the month so we will be meeting on May 23rd
074at 5 um as as president McVeigh stated we had gotten out of that pattern so as to allow for more time for public feedback or public comment um we have been for the last several meetings working on the the policy that has been named controversial issues uh it hasn't been officially renamed yet but we are we are looking at the possibility of renaming it um there have been some revisions and some edits and currently we have put together some questions and feedback for legal and so we are waiting um to hear back from Troon on some particular topics related to the policy and the current um version or revision of of the of a draft I guess of a policy um when we meet on May 23rd we will have those the feedback from legal
075and we are also looking at getting back to some policies that had kind of Fallen by the wayside because we were looking at spending devoting a lot of time to policy 2240. so we will be looking again at the policy related to dress code which had been brought to the policy committee a while ago and we approved the dress code for for staff and for teachers but we did not for students we wanted to have some input and feedback from from the deiac and they have given us that and they had presented that to president McVeigh when he was the policy chair and so he has kindly offered to take their feedback and the Neola recommendation and craft put the two together and bring that to us for um for our perusal at our at
076our maybe not the next meeting but at least at an upcoming meeting is it next to me will it be ready it's on my to-do list for the next few days great so and then the other um policy that we want to take a look at again is the policy related to school visitors and that was one that had come through with a Neola update based on um based on new guidance from the state and the governor specifically and we had put um some I guess we would put some larger safety measures in place but uh when it went through last fall but we wanted to revisit that after some public comment so that will also be on our agenda um and so that's that's kind of the update as it stands right now in
077terms of policy uh the policy committee I do want to just state in addition to the kind words that President McVeigh stated that um all of us trustees um serving on the policy committee or other committees have been elected by the community and as representatives of the community we are you know always seeking public comment so we welcome your public comment at our meetings or in our email boxes or connecting in person or on the phone or as it may be however I do want to just State publicly that when we are working on policy when we are working at the table we do have the lens of our own identities in terms of like me being a mom of three kids who've attended Saline schools being an educator Etc however we are not three
078people making decisions in isolation that we have been elected by the majority of the community to serve in this capacity and it's not a task that we take lightly so in a recent public comment there was just a comment made that um that it shouldn't be just three people making a decision for everyone but this is how this role as a trustee works and we do welcome public feedback and comments and we do take those to heart but we are not making decisions as three parents of students in Saline schools so I guess that's what I wanted to say about that too Treasurer girby are you prepared um since yeah it's I think I could talk um I just wanted to add to the the schedule I know that's something that the finance committee set
079up last year and that the policy committee was able to do last year schedule wise um the year before last not every board member could you know could make it on like a particular day a particular time and we were working on like the transgender and non-binary students policy and needed more more time for that so just the state that you know for people to look at the calendar for our meetings and the public postings that Betty puts out in very timely manners manner on the website and also under the Board site so next year it may look different I just want to point that out thank you um so Treasurer Kirby are you prepared to provide a brief report for the finance committee I'm ready awesome all right uh so Finance meant today and
080we had a couple of things on our agenda and I will tell you the most important thing so first of all probably the most important thing that we discussed was that April 28th uh the House and Senate K-12 Appropriations subcommittee they they released their budgets okay and so the governor had previously passed or had released or proposed her budget and uh her budget was for I want to make sure I get my numbers right a 458 dollar per pupil increase that's about five percent uh the house version came in about 366 and about four percent and then the Senate came in a little higher than that at 550 per pupil and six percent so four percent Governor six percent Senate four percent house long story short what I see about that is that we anticipate
081that hopefully we will see an increase in our poor people allowance and there yeah that's that that's positive news for us and uh obviously you know there are two things we we look at as a you know as far as Finance goes it's that per pupil allowance and enrollment uh and so you know enrollment is something we're constantly monitoring something will we be keeping an eye on we're going through processes School of Choice all of those kinds of things capturing our students for our kindergarten numbers and so that's a this is a continuously um a continuous thing that we're mindful of as a as a team and I have incredible uh you know I think of incredible uh I don't know what the bigger support for our superintendent that he's on top of those things
082so so that is that the consensus Revenue conference that's going to be May 19th for the state and uh the importance of that is really that's where the K-12 State a budget they kind of say hey we can afford to do either four percent five percent six percent then they start to really say where are we going to land so anyway long story sharp just uh I just think that we we we're in a good place uh but the last thing I would say is I do have a save the date June 13th for our annual budget hearing right we have an annual June budget hearing that is going to happen at 6 00 pm on uh June the 13th and that'll be led by our fearless Finance director so if that has any questions
083I'd entertain them but and or if there's anything the committee wants to add but that's all that's what I got I do have on my calendar May 19th for the consensus Revenue estimating conference for for geeks and nerds it's the Super Bowl well thank you very much um if we could go it really what well it really is I mean sir Miranda do you have a front row seat popping that popcorn all right uh I want to thank everybody for that uh the reports uh so Administration board updates and then we'll go on to the consent agenda at your convenience a couple of them uh thanks again to the community for supporting the operating millage on May 2nd that was an important vote and we won't need to do that again for 10 years so
084I appreciate that that level of support uh the other thing this past weekend a wonderful Arts Festival if anybody had a chance to visit this it had been moved to the Celine high school media center and it was great I loved it and if you you know you you realize how talented both our students and our teachers are when you go to an event like that and you know I've been to plenty of art museums and I would say that I enjoy our Student Art Festival so much more because you just see this talent and it's great uh the other thing today attended the swwwc awards where uh the thing that's so impressive about this is there's over 20 programs in the Southwest Washington Consortium it's in the High School auditorium there's hundreds of kids
085from you know Celine Chelsea Dexter Milan and it's just great to see everybody coming together you is a family feel where they're giving out Awards everybody's applauding there's 33 different student advisors helping with it and it just uh reiterates how wonderful program that is and we're really lucky that we house it at saline High School uh Weber Bliss visits have started that's a great tradition that we've been doing for quite some time and I really appreciate the docents these are often the um you know people that have worked in the school district or just community members that are retired and they help all the time with this and it's it's great that they do that and we really appreciate them uh final comment tonight I'm just very very excited of the work that's going on
086with the 180 million dollar Bond campaign um racks in the capital projects team have been doing a terrific job of of managing that and really getting a lot of stuff moving uh quickly I think we've been in the design phases now but you know just the other day we're over uh touring the current Cosmetology center on Michigan Avenue that's going to move to you know where the Transportation Center used to be land is closing on that almost set with that with the title company so we can move the transportation center over to tuft court and just a lot of movement now and and it's just exciting to see a lot of that to come to fruition and so I feel like we're right on and where our timeline's at and feeling good about that so
087great work to our team thanks I'll just let oh after after Allison speaks we'll just let anyone pipe up when they feel the needs so I just to start I have two random personal things because for some reason this week I've been doing a lot of board adjacent things in school in financial literacy I learned what a bond is so yay loans bonds right yes of course and then I took my AP environmental science test last week and now we're designing a sustainable Middle School where the imaginary board gave us 40 million dollars to design a sustainable Middle School uh yeah no it is um we have so much money we're making a juice bar so it does it uh so it's like recycled bricks and like bamboo floors it's it's an interesting project um
088that's just my personal little tidbits uh seniors last days on May 26th which is both scary and exciting at the same time consequentially graduation is on June 4th uh prom is on May 20th so if you're a junior senior you should probably get tickets for that um Miss stemmer who is the marketing teacher at the high school is having surgery sometime this week they have yes she had surgery already so hoping for a successful recovery and all that well wishes to the simmer family again the art show was really good last weekend I had exactly one piece in it from jewelry one of my rings was like hidden in the very back but it was there um the sixth graders are going to Chicago this week on May 10th which they didn't do when I
089was in sixth grade so I'm a little bitter about that but it's okay and then okay I have the presentation if you want to see it but and then again AP testing there's a few more classes I know EP Lang was today so just stay strong it's almost over it'll be worth that at the end so thank you very much Alice I appreciate that I do have one quick comment if no one else is ready to talk I just want to say thank you to the Middle Middle School uh Celine middle school for hosting a fundraiser for Saline Area social services and everyone who donated to replace their shelves and apparently a group of Middle School volunteers helped put up the shelves and the report is that the whole place just is transformed I'm looking
090forward to seeing it the last time I saw it I thought the shelves were fine but apparently they were in disrepair so I'm looking forward to it thank you for to those students for their hard work and and the adults who came as well awesome thank you thank you so much Jennifer Susan my super super fast I just wanted to please thank you the community um to amplify what Steve said and thank you for voting for the military renewal foreign so is that tomorrow yes tomorrow um there is a young fives and um kindergarten uh walk through I think multiple elementary schools are doing that um this will hopefully well it will be my last as a parent attending um yeah definitely my last um so I'm excited about that and bringing along my little
091one um to to check out uh her new school in the fall and then Friday I had a meeting fortunately it was Zoom because it was a very short meeting and I would have had to have gone to Lansing which is a long drive um for like less than an hour meeting so it was misb bylaws and resolutions committee meeting we're going to have one more meeting before we meet in the fall at the annual conference and um fortunately because it was short we have at this point um short uh you know not very many um resolutions and bylaws uh to bring um to the whole um you know organization so um I'm happy about that and I'm sure everybody else who attends that um in the fall um we'll be happy about it as
092well so trustee Kirby oh it was just trying out my microphone uh I think we have teacher appreciation week coming up uh this week yes so a big big note of appreciation to all of our amazing teachers and I know there are lots of events going on um for them and also a little shout out and happy Mother's Day to all the moms in the district this weekend and those who also do the other work of mothering and parenting well appreciated so I'll I'll also state that right like that uh thank you to our moms out there and what have you uh art I will say from the finance chair slash Treasurer I can't help but say also thank you for the the millage renewal that eight and a half million dollars is essential to
093our everyday budgeting so uh Art Festival outstanding appreciated that I want to give a quick shout out to our Chicago folks you know for the folks who plan it the folks who are chaperoning the folks that are are making those things possible my my sixth grader is excited to go I'm excited for him to go but uh and and you know it's a it's just an exciting time and I thank you for that and then I last meeting I was I don't know if I was confused or if it was I'd seen multiple things yeah I wanted to make sure I recognized also teacher appreciation week and I want to make sure I also say out loud publicly that if you show your badge you get a free shake at Shake Shack so I mean
094that's an important opportunity I wouldn't want any of my co-educators to miss out on so but in in all reality I do want to say thank you it's not lost on me as a trustee nor will it ever be how incredible our staff is and how dedicated they are to to our ex to Excellence so thank you Treasurer groupie are they taking the Wolverine Express to Chicago or the buses the buses oh the train is half the trip harass Amtrak secretary Miller uh I'll just I just looked up the dates so that we have them so tomorrow is the Woodland Meadows uh young fives in kindergarten walkthrough at 7 pm Pleasant Ridge will be on the 17th oh at 6 PM okay we have 7 P.M in our notes okay 6 p.m and Pleasant Ridge
095is on the 17th and harvest is on the 24th So for anybody listening those events are coming up and um our great way to help your um your Rising kindergarten or young Fiverr acclimate and transition in the fall if they have something familiar it's always helpful I also wanted to congratulate all the artists and art teachers we had an opportunity to go and take a look at the art this weekend and like everyone has said I was blown away I have a student as I've mentioned before who takes Pottery so we were especially um especially tuned in to the pottery projects but I will say those AP drawing students incredible I was I was mesmerized I had to sit there for a while and even the the attention to lighting it just I was really
096really impressed but really our youngest artist all the way up to our um AP drawing students um who are senior mostly seniors um just really impressed with the work that that our um that our students do under the guidance of their teachers and um I I know that art can be a particularly wonderful outlet for a lot of stressors and so I love that we have an opportunity in addition to our core academics for kids to find their passions in other ways um I also wanted to mention promise coming up before our next meeting so um having two Juniors uh two junior class officers it's been it's been a year of planning it's been it's been a little stressful and so we are happy to see that coming together thank you to Lori Dawson who
097has taken this on again and is supporting the students as they make their plans I also wanted to um just mentioned an appreciation to teachers I think there's been like some discrepancy like some people thought teacher appreciation week was last week some people think it's this week and so I'm just enjoying a two-week celebration of teachers everywhere I think they should they should have at least two weeks if not every week um thank you to to voters and um the important the importance of the millage passing and lastly just that the testing window continues um this year I have uh I guess had my eyes open to a lot of the um ins and outs of the AP testing scenarios especially for students with learning differences and it's something that that I know our school
098is supporting our students but working to be a better Advocate at least on my own end to the college board and some of the practices that just I don't know don't seem to to fit as well as we are accommodating our students here at a local level so at the College Board level seeking out some answers and some some guidance there but I I want to just State publicly that I know that our guidance counselors and our teachers and our Proctors are doing everything that they can to create an equitable system for testing for our students and that sometimes their hands are tied so reaching out to the next level so I'm at note good luck to all the testers as the window continues for the next two weeks thank you very much you if
099I could just add one more you reminded me of something and all of you spoke about the art show a few years back I was attended the art show and I was so inspired by this by the 2D the the portraits that I saw I dedicated myself to improve my own portrait drawing for the first two years my portraits look like bags of sand with faces sharpied on them not very good at all but they're getting better and I just want to say you the students at this school have you I'm not sure I'll do one of you it'll look like a bag of sand with sharpies uh the consent agenda ladies and uh the consent agenda is listed in this agenda and will not be read aloud the motion noted will allow for the
100authorization of all items without discussion unless a member of the board requested anyone or all be considered individually uh so I'd like to entertain a motion to authorize the consent agenda as printed I'd actually like to entertain a motion to amend the consent agenda removing A and B A and B on my first read apologies Betty I'm my first read of the packet I missed it but on my second read today I noticed that I couldn't find the minutes from April 25th or the minutes from April 19th thank you I don't think so in the packet I just looked at it again so I I did three reviews 176 pages no no worries no worries and I didn't catch it on the first read when you sent it over on Friday so I or I
101would have let you know ahead of time okay thank you he's easily easily done so I will it was totally learned the day you complained that 176 pages is too long is the next two weeks from now you'll get one that's 324 pages so uh we will try this again I'd like to entertain a motion to authorize a consent agenda as amended I'll make that motion oh okay all in favor please say aye I I proposed all right thank you very much all right so moved so so past or kind of come up with a better phrase uh are there items scheduled on the next agenda superintendent Lodge yeah the main schedule report report is labeled uh restorative practices and primarily what that means is students staff restorative practices things about safety security discipline Title
