002to hearing what Adams has to share with the board of education and uh so we appreciate you carving out time from your schedules to be here tonight to hear about some of the wonderful things that are taking place over at Adams Elementary School so it's great to have you all here in the sore space uh additionally we'd like to recognize Miss Nicole Davis a co- teer over at vandenbberg Elementary School uh so as you know vandenbberg they have a saying that we Rise by lifting each other up and we would like to recognize Miss Nicole Davis uh she is uh ongoingly patient she always takes her time to really get to know every single student and she continuously goes above and beyond to serve the students at Vandenberg Elementary School her empathy kindness and passion
003as well as her adaptability are simply nothing short of remarkable and so congratulations goes to co- teer Miss Nicole Davis who is also affectionately known as Miss Coco so when you're out and about at venberg if you hear Miss Coco uh that's who we're referring to with uh Miss Nicole Davis and that concludes my communications this evening Madam president next item on the agenda is board Communications do I have any board Communications I attended the Wayne County Association of school boards on Thursday and it was very interesting what we at Mig Association of school boards had uh our guest speaker at Linda and what happened she wanted to know what we as board school boards wanted our legislators to push for so there was so many things that they wanted some of them were of
004course me personally was CS writing that push that um they also talked about pushing for more teachers um she told us we could not have anything to say about funding so that we wanted to but we couldn't and uh she I'm just going to read a couple of the things that they needed us they wanted us to uh talk about and it was really interesting we I think it was about 90 minutes that we talked and she broke us down into four groups and it was really really interesting I must lost but some of the other things that we talked about was um getting more teachers and you know that we had talked about that Talent what was that J Talent together yeah Talent together and that was good and because so many of our
005teachers are retiring and we need more teachers to come in so that's uh what we talked about and what you say okay so and it was really interesting so we did that and that was a real good um exercise for are there any other more comments next item on the agenda is comments from the audience topics related to the agenda are there in we have none next item on the agenda is the consent agenda do I have a board member willing to adopt the cons agenda to the chair yes like to move the adoption of the following resolution please do I have a support support it's been moved by Mrs fleser supported by Mrs HS next item on the oh all in favor [Music] five eyes any made zero adoption resolution adop next item on
006the agenda is presentation Adams Elementary School thank you madam president at this time I would like to turn it over to principal flowers as well as to the Adams staff uh for their presentation this evening Mrs Flowers all right well thank you everybody um today we're going to talk talk about Adam's data and then our plans to um one uh improve the data and continue with some of the growth that we've seen already so we have a great picture of our staff um I promise my kids I will say this is very uh cutesy and demure all right so um the things that we're going to talk about on the agenda the three um big rocks are mstep information mstep proficiency scores and steps toward data analysis so these are things that will be mentioning
007so first and foremost is the three big rocks um this is something we talked about at the beginning of the school year we throughout the school year uh relationships and responsiveness um which goes hand in hand with Dei diversity equity and inclusion safety including our learning environment curriculum instruction and assessment and how that relates to our myip district strategies um safe and nurturing environment for all and guaranteed and viable curriculum just some of those pieces so um one of the things that we do every school year we talk about this with the staff and with the students is our mstep U performance level score ranges and what the students know um and what we're teaching them what the uh staff knows is what proficiency looks like across our third fourth and fifth grades when it
008comes to mstep ELA and Mathematics so when you're a third grader you want your scores to be 1300 and above fourth grader 1,400 fifth grader 1500 very easy to remember if you just remember it that way um and what we um like to do is make sure the students parents staff knows what that looks like and that will relate to what you see next for our data so every year in April May we take our mstep test the first scores that you see is uh for ELA proficiency and we have a a range of scores from 2019 all the way up to 2024 our scores for the 2024 school year for grade three was 27% proficient which compared to the district we were right on board um there the county was at 30% we were
0093% off comparing to the county and for the state those numbers don't really count but they were 40% and we were at 27 so that's just something we're always striving for for third grade for fourth grade we were at 38% proficient which we were 4% above the district go Adams 33% we were also above the county and 43% we were just we were below uh the state but we're growing in that area for grade five we were at 233% proficiency and we're working on that District was at 30% County at 35 and the state at 44% our fifth graders are now sixth graders so those students we have passed over to pierce and we are sending good luck her way to make sure that they get what they need for our math proficiency uh for
010the 2024 school year um we had some pretty good numbers in third grade we were at 37% proficient the district was at 28% County at 34% and the state at 43% so we did pretty well in third grade for math for fourth grade we were at 26% the district was at 22 County at 29 and the state at 39 again we're working on that but our scores were comparable to district and County at grade five we're 15% um and with the district 13 we you know did better but that's a a spot where again we're working on making sure that our fifth graders um are taking the test seriously and making sure that they're concentrated and do what they need to do and for science we were at 15% and social studies 4% uh again
011those are spots that definitely we are working on um and we know that that's a spot that uh the fifth grade teachers are concentrating on making sure those scores get better for this next school year so some of the things um that you've seen um so what we've done is as a staff we've identified building grade level proficiencies and deficiencies um we're looking at um each grade level to see exactly what do we need to do to make sure they are growing uh We've identified 2024 m step claim and Target strengths and weaknesses and we're going to continue to go through that in meetings and students we've identified students that are Advanced that need to be contined that need to continue to be challenged uh one of the things we also looked at is our
012students who are partially proficient um and making sure that those students have a focus in our intervention time so that they are growing to be proficient so partially proficient means that they were just there so focusing on our students to make sure we count them as proficient in the spring um um we're looking at our standard proficiencies and deficiencies by students I said that and what we're one of the things that we're doing is we're really focusing on our intervention our intervention students our hot list students those students who are just where they you know just a couple of points away from being proficient one of the things that I'm doing this year with um Mila and she's our our coach our teacher coaches we are doing um student growth um go growing um Target
013maret so each student is meeting with myself or with milka we're looking at their mstep scores we're looking at their NWA scores and we're creating a goal a personal goal for growth for them and so it's it's a it's a slow process but we're holding our students accountable for their scores also not just the staff members but the students third through fourth are also creating their own growth goals so that's something new that we're doing this year along with um making sure that our students have intervention for math and reading um throughout the week and that we are um progress monitoring their staff uh their uh their uh growth throughout the school year all right so some of the the fun stuff at Adam so student health and wellness we have Lincoln Behavioral back in
014our building this year and they are very they were very helpful we have um two District Behavior coaches Holly and Rachel we are still working on restore circles which gives our students an opportunity to talk about their differences and work out what they can do to have better relationships within the classroom we have a new Social Work hire yay Adam so that person should be on board very shortly and we have a student family success Mentor um he's over The Breakfast Club and we're revamping our breakfast club to include both females and males this year so that um they have a place to talk about the goals um and how they should do throughout the school day and those are just some of the things we do we have oural and GAP curriculum the students
015see that every single morning peace path we also have a reset and sensory space for those students who just need some time to get themselves together before going back to class if they're having a moment we also um do monthly assemblies one of the best times of the month is we the teachers have an opportunity to pick a citizen which is a student who is doing everything they need to do with in the classroom getting their work done being a model citizen um and those students who are picked we get two students per class those students get a pizza party um and they get to have lunch with me so every month we have a pizza party get to have lunch with me just for being those role models in their classroom every month I
016mentioned The Breakfast Club and student goal setting you see a small example under there um we also make sure that the students are praised and pictures are taken and we put that in our weekly um memo to our families and then one thing that we added this year was attendance Awards and the students were so excited and we just gave them a sheet and a lollipop and we said hey you were in school every day and a boy was like I didn't get an award my mom said I'm going to come to school I said well that's all that it takes I'll get more suckers so that's something new that um we started this school year and I think it's going to make a huge difference in our attendance and our tardies last but not
017least we have have a great um PTO and with our PTO trunk Retreat is coming up on the 25th I believe so we do that every uh school year we have our surprise popcorn days we have mommy and sunny Mommy and son and daddy daughter days um we always have a dance we have um a day where we have a curriculum night and our PTO sponsors that also um they sell pizza things like that to make it more fun and we have dinner there for the families we have a weekly s'more where we put out our announcements reminders um celebrations and achievements and learning so those are just some of the things that we do great at Adams okay see Mr Winston I told you any questions okay yes ma'am what is the da uh
018I I get what daily reading but math when time so when is the term we use and it's what I need and that's our intervention time and so then we look at the student data um they have specific groups the interventionist uh we have three of them in our building well intervention and we have two parents who break off those student groups and we have work that's specifically to what they need so that's our time when we fill those learning gaps thank you any other questions thank you all right next item on the agenda is discuss and consider appointment of director and student services you yes okay thank you madam president it's an honor and a privilege for me to recommend to the board this evening uh the consideration for the appointing of our new
019student services director Miss Shirley Ashford who is here this evening and uh she just waved she's also joined by some family members as well uh Miss Shirley Ashford has been serving the students of Michigan since 2009 and she comes to us with over 12 years of experience either as a supervisor or as a director of student services within the state of Michigan uh Miss Ashford most recently served as the Director of special education at Harper Wood School District and she also earned her bachelor's as well as her master's degree from Wayne State University um and this just encapsulates her administrative experience not uh inclusive of her teaching experience which also predates 2009 uh but with Miss ashford's team approach which is collaborative in nature uh her experience with restorative practices and holding high expectations for
020students makes her a perfect fit for the South Redford School District she also has a unique eye to a systems approach and she also brings a focus with inclusionary efforts when we think about serving all of our students within the South Red School District and she's joined by her family this evening and so with that Madam president there is a resolution for board consideration to appoint Miss Shirley Ashford as the next director of student services here within the South Redford school district do I have a board member willing to adopt the resolution now president yes adop I move the ad the F resolution support it's it's been moved by V early and supported by m m FL all in favor I welcome exced excited to be here good I'm so glad you joined us absolutely
021um we are going to take a re short recess for about 15 minutes at 6 654 I call this meeting back to order at [Music] 709 next item on the agenda is discussing discuss naming of District facility Innovation Center Mr thank you madam president so the time has come for the board to have uh discussions should the board uh want to consider naming the Innovations Center possibly something Beyond just the Innovation Center and so um thought that we would bring it before the board this evening for a discussion on what the board's thoughts might be about uh the future naming of the Innovation Center and if there's any uh desires of the board that um they might wish to to share in tonight's conversation on this topic so we have a number of people that
022were instrumental in bringing the project to where it's at uh on this uh you know to this point in time um at the same point in time as the board knows there's no obligation but in accordance with the board's policy thought it warranted board discussion so I'll turn it back over to U you madam president for discussion amongst the board this evening should they uh de fit yes I have a question um I know this all area is all sore where is the Innovation Center located so the Innovation Center is is that the new part we just put on yes okay y exactly the chair yes I'm willing to open up the disc the discussion if that's okay um just thinking a lot about um like like you said Jason there's a lot of people
023that were instrumental but one stands out even above others one that grew up here was educated here gave his life is still involved in the community and I think it would be a great honor if we consider naming it after Brian gdus anyone else yes I'll agree anyone else well the top of my list is Brian gin but I also um thought of Christine hord because she was very instrumental in getting all the schools together and taking us to all the schools there was probably about six or seven of them she took um and made arrangements for that so I [Music] had my thought on that is like this whole section is sore that whole section is we already have for this name is not that's just that little room just that room just that
024little room in there Chris I thought this was all s it's not but it's not Chris it's just that one so this section doesn't have s it's sore Online Academy you want to address that I I think you covered it well the when when the board it was approximately two years ago now it was the naming of that breakout collaboration space when you enter the cafe if you make a quick write um um that was the decision of the board a couple years ago to name that space in Dr Christine hofer's honor um and and shirely spoke to that well and then this space just as she had mentioned is is just sore itself U but that collaboration workspace was named in Dr H's honor but not this area here that that we're in tonight
025yes so with that being said that's just that space being named after her is it a problem to the ination center after Brian or would that cause any is anything it would not it would just be at the desire of the board if the board would want to name it in honor of both or in honor of just the one it would really be at the board's discretion for how the board might want it to appear in a resolution with the gis Hofer Innovation Center or the Brian gdis Innovation Center um or other suggestions uh that the board may have tonight or or into the future as well for our community for a very long time um the chair yes I I like the separation of the two where we honored Christine one way which
026she gave differently than Brian even though they collaborated together and then Brian um he has given so much Blood Sweat and Tears you know his his whole life literally and I think he deserves the honor of yet being in his name stand aone what's the will of the boy some discuss we discuss yeah we just discuss discussing listening to say I think both of them are good so well we're going to have to either do both and make a choice this is a discuss we don't have to consider no I don't mean but I mean when it's time is going to I guess I I have questions that I have to ask Offline that this would not be popular read so no more discussion the chair so technically cannot come back for a consider unless
027we come to come some type of cons consensus tonight we can continue to discuss push it out a few weeks but we can't move a resolution without formal um decision of the board I'd almost like to have more Bo pres before we make that final decision so we might need to discuss it I'm is the board in agreeance with discussing it one more time with uh all board members okay so we'll do that next item on the agenda comments from the AA oh that's right it is discuss and consider nomination for Wayne reisa parent advisor committee um we did have a speak they number 14 no number 13 but interesting she's here oh she 14 though she can go 14 she can go 14 we can finish what we got to do be not related
028to cuz it kind of is anyway okay okay all right discuss the considerate considered nomination for Wayne reisa parent advisory committee I can read it if you would like or if you want somebody else to no you can do it sure thank you madam president the Michigan administrative rules of special education require that Boards of Education of each School District to nominate a parent or guardian of of a student who is receiving special education services to an appointment on the Wayne County Rea parent advisory committee as stated in the Michigan administrative rules of special education the nominations must come from the local Board of Education and be for a parent guardian of a student with a disability Mrs Tracy Winston who has most recently served the South Redford School District as our pack representative she
029continues to fulfill the requirements and has offered to continue serving as the district's pack representative Madam president a resolution is attached for board consideration do I have a board member willing to adopt the resolution I have a question um did we have anyone else that applied or indicated they wanted to do it or is she the only one I'm just curious is she she is the only one to my knowledge do I have a board member wanting to adop the resolution yes I'm going to adop the resolution do I have a support support it's been adopted by Mrs early supported by Mrs Hicks all in favor I I I five eyes Zer resolution adoped me ask one more question could we have her come back in sometime in the future of this year and have
030her let us know what she actually does today cuz I have a clue well is here right now so uh Mrs Miss Tracy would you like to come up and say a few words sure okay hello hello I am uh Tracy Winston and you had a couple of questions regarding um what you do what I do so first of all um in order to be a part of this uh wonderful committee or organization you have to to have a child that is receiving special education services which I do what we do is we have meetings and all of the parents that come from different districts they have uh different resources and programs that are for children that have special needs various ages voting um different rights and helping parents to understand what their rights are
031with us knowing what our rights are as parents of kids with special needs we can help those parents in our district that may have questions needs concerned so there have been a a couple of parents that have had some concerns with their children uh receiving uh services and I have been able to assist them and letting them know what their rights are what they can do and what they're unable to do so that's basically what we do it's a support um because being a parent of a child with a with special needs can be a lonely experience and so um because you feel unheard in areas you're not sure what to do in some areas and so when we are equipped with that information we can then take the information that we learn and we
032can extend that information out and you also asked about um other members so each district can have two people so there's actually another person um that is going to also run it's not in competition we're going to work together to get information out for other parents uh that have children in the district with special need are these Center based programs or or are they in in school it's in and out so there's there's different types of resources because a lot of the parents have kids that have aged out or about to age out so there's different um programs um helping them to get jobs and resources for higher education all types of things so it it extends out this very broad wish they had that one my kids any youone to have any other questions
033no okay thank you thank you thank you okay uh next item on the agenda comments from the audience topics not related to the agenda that oh that's me again just stay up [Music] there my apologies hi again I'm Tracy Winston my uh I'm supposed to tell you guys my address oh I don't have to okay well I'm Tracy Winston again um so I'm I'm up here regarding it's the the the second part is um just letting you guys know about a situation with a school board member that I feel is um a little bit disturbing so um there was a uh School Board member that uh reached out to um a friend of mine regarding um a conflict of interests um imply of there being conflict of interest because my husband is on the school
034board and I'm running for the pet um my concern with that is I don't think it's a very good look that Schoolboard members are talking about parents that are running for an organization that I don't get paid for I am just passionate about um because I do have a child that has special needs and so I'm very passionate about making sure that I get all the information that I need and also making sure that other parents are getting that information as well because most of the information that we receive is from people letting us know about the information and so um I just feel that um the this the person wasn't affected by me serving in this position um me being a part of the pack me um being involved in it the person that
035they spoke with um actually is a friend of mine and she's actually going to run can I say the person can I say Sarah um so Sarah is also going to run for it we're going to work together um but I don't know if this person was trying to cause a divide or create an issue or concern but it's there's no issue it's a non-pay position I do it because I'm passionate about it and I don't think it's a very good look for the school board for school board members to have unnecessary conversations about something that doesn't affect you know it just affects the people that it affects so it affects parents that have children that have special needs so I just wanted um you ought to be aware um and just to let you
036know and that's it thank you for your time thank you again next item on the agenda is plus Delta plan for improvement will that be Mr Bob or Mr keny Sure Madam president uh what processes you supported the board's work this evening thank you for asking do I have anyone to the chair yes timely meeting I mean it's not even 7:30 and we're about to be done so you know business was conducted it was completed and you know that's always good you we're not here for 2 2 and 1 half hours discussion more business so always a p anyone else well I thought Mrs Flowers did a great job in her presentation and um you know as always uh I know she's working hard in trying to get our num yes what opportunities might the
037Board of Education see for improvement this evening Mr chair yes we couldn't complete number uh 11 because we don't have boards here I me that's is I no that's not what she said under the B threshold you don't have to discuss it the B threshold Mr Mr B would you please explain that to I can okay okay sorry do you mean 12 though or do you mean 11 I think it's it's 11 it's 11 that's the one I remove I'm just wondering do you me 11 or you me I mean 12 no 12 I mean 12 I'm sorry 12 I'm sorry I me 12 I'm sorry you're good no I'm sorry I looked yeah I'm in 12 I'm sorry all good okay other opportunities from the board this evening to support the board in their
038work I know we've asked to have these ahead of time so that we can review them and maybe format some better [Music] questions that Delta yes okay back to you madam president [Music] okay if there's no more business that comes before this board I adjourn this meeting at 7:30
