So, she has studied these words without promise of participation. So, thank you very much for being willing to participate. Jazzaniah Johnson. >> [applause] >> Congratulations to all of you for reaching this point in the competition. Your dedication to learning, correct spelling, and increasing your vocabularies will help you not only in this competition, but also throughout your life. Participation helps you build confidence, gain public speaking conf experience, and practice poise under pressure and set goals. We can't wait to see all of your skills on display. not just at the be but in all the amazing things that you do. Let's give another round of applause for today's uh participants. [applause] So, another good morning to you all. I am Mrs. Watt. I'm a title one reading teacher here at Elwood. It's my pleasure to welcome you

once again to the Elwood spelling bee. The competition will begin in a few moments. At this time, I ask that you check and make sure that all of your cell phones are silenced. We will begin with speller number one and continue in number order. Spellers, remember, take a breath, say your word, and then begin spelling. Remember, it's up to you to speak clearly. If the judges cannot understand you, that will count against you. When it is your turn to spell, you'll walk to the front. Mrs. Baxter will give you the microphone and um you can ask the pronouncer to repeat the word, give this part of speech or an example sentence. Remember, if you're ever not sure what the word is, ask for more information. We're here to help you understand and there might be

a clue or something in the sentence that might help you jog your memory. The pronouncer will not answer root word questions or take requests for other sentences. So, you get one sentence. That's it. Okay. If the word is a homonym, a word that sounds similar but has a different meaning, the pronouncer will make every effort to share the information and provide the part of speech without being asked. But remember again, it's ultimately your responsibility to know what the word is that you are spelling. You can start over to spell a word, but if you change the letters in the sequence of letters that you've already said, it will count as a misspelling and you will be out of the competition. If you're going to restart spelling your word, it's helpful to let the judges know

what you're doing. Remember, we ask, "Can I start again?" Right? Good job. For example, if my root if my word is kangaroo and I say k an and then forget where I am, I'm going to ask, can I start over? And the answer is always going to be >> yes. >> Good. Now remember, if you're spelling kangaroo and you start c and you say, "Can I start it over?" The answer is yes. But are you allowed to change the letters? Even if you know what letter is right, are you allowed to change it? >> No. All right. So that's why we always say take a deep breath, repeat the word, let your brain tell your mouth what to say. All right. Now, as we near the end of the beat, if all the spellers in

a round misspell, all the spellers in that round will go on to a new round. If only one speller spells correctly in a round, a new one-word spelling round will begin, and that speller will be given the opportunity to spell one more word. If you get it, you're the champion. If you don't get it, then we bring back everybody from the last round and we go again. We're going to explain this more at the end. Before we begin, I'd like to introduce to you the officials who will be presiding over the competition. Um, officials, just give away as I call your name. First, I'm pleased to introduce to you Miss um Bartlett, who is our announcer, uh, Mrs. Molmar, our head judge, Miss Jennings, our judge, and Mr. Bourre, our record keeper. Thank you, officials.

I would also like to take this time to recognize Mrs. Miss Rrimmel, our principal. Um, our greeters were uh Dean Henley, uh, Miss Host, and Mr. Washington. Miss Priyana is our timekeeper, and I think we will be having Miss Sarah come down shortly. We are grateful to Mrs. Baxter, also our title one reading teacher here at Elmo for her dedication to assisting with the B in so many ways. She's going to be helping our spellers with anything they want. And finally, we want to thank our IT department because if it wasn't for them, our classrooms would not be able to watch this be. So today, you're going to take part in a great American tradition. I'm so excited for you guys. I want you to do your best. If there's anything we can help you

with, you let us know. And on behalf of Elmwood Elementary School, thank you all for joining us to celebrate the achievements of these fantastic young spellers. We're going to eat.
