001I as provider due to the Red Cross adult and pediatric first aid certification and childcare experience I received through the program as well as my student teaching activity. But overall I have to credit my success in the classroom to my mentor Mrs. Roberts. Mrs. has helped me develop the confidence and knowledge needed to pass on the gift of learning. I am very grateful that I was able to have her as my instructor instructor during her last year. Her passion and drive for teaching have truly inspired me to pursue a career in education. Finally, I'd like to shout out to Mrs. Bernard, the principal of the career center, for her leadership and dedication to create opportunities for students like me. Her support of programs such as teacher cadet have allowed me have allowed so many students

002their passions to prepare for their future. Incredibly grateful for the experiences, guidance, and encouragement I have received throughout my time at the career center. These opportunities have not help have helped me shape me have helped shape me not only as a student but as a future educ educator too. [applause] >> Good evening everybody. Good evening. >> Okay, >> I'm going to send the nicest way I possible. Where's the energy? [laughter] >> So, we're going to try this again. Okay, we're going to try it again. >> Good. Good evening, everybody. >> Good evening. >> There we go. Okay. I thought we were falling asleep. We're good. >> Make good. Even though I didn't come up with anything planned, I think I'm going to go on a win. You know, that's where most of the best lessons

003come from. Working on your working right on your feet with flexibility in mind. But first, I want to I don't know. Where should I start? You know, can we start off by giving a hand from Miss Roberts for teaching us? [applause] And one more really big hand from Miss Barnard for making all of this possible, not even for me, but for many other other [applause] people. Um, I'm going to start off by stating honestly I didn't see myself becoming a teacher just yet. I definitely saw something in um definitely in child care. So I was like maybe I should try teacher cadet cuz it might also teach me how to speak in front of people as well alongside me taking marketing. Thanks to Miss Rob. Thank you Miss Barnard again. But um when I first

004started, honestly, I was super duper nervous. Even though I had a teacher I've already had before, the fact working in front of a whole big group of kids is a lot. [clears throat] >> I'm teaching first graders with Ms. Winsky at Kenyon right now. Um, but through her guidance and everything of that such and Miss Roberts teaching us many other ways to work with the kids, it made it really really easy for me to adjust a lot. Even though I felt like I was going to feel like an oddball out with all these kids learning everything already, but thanks to her guidance and everything of that such, it helped me grow even more, even outside of teaching, but as a person. taught me how to be more compassionate, be more patient, especially with kids because

005I know personally they might not understand everything so fast, but it definitely taught me be patient, slow down. It's okay not to rush through everything and not every kid is going to understand, which is definitely a lesson I had to learn the hard way. But I got to teach my first lesson. Um, through my lesson, I was able to teach the concept of the future. With that, I did come a lot of obstacles with the kids slowly coming to a new topic that they didn't learn. But thanks to Miss Roberts helping, it made it really, really easy. So, thank you. >> Did a great job. [applause] >> Hi everyone. >> Hello. >> Um, my name is Aaria and I'm currently teaching at Kenyan. Um, teaching at >> a teacher. Oh, I teach kindergarten, Miss Thomas's

006class. >> Kindergarten is rough, let me tell you. Oh my goodness. But Miss Roberts, she taught me how to deal with all those kids and how to um navigate with all of them, how how they feel, how to take care of all their needs, what they need, um how and I also learned there's a lot to go with being a teacher, a lot of responsibilities. And I want to step in and take that chance to try and fill in for the people that don't want to be teachers because like she said, there's not a lot of teachers. So, I want to really be one of those people to help teach the kids how to like to navigate through the real world. Um, I'm sorry. Trying to think. >> You're okay, right? >> I'm so sorry.

007Um, >> do you have a new Have you gained a new respect for your teachers? >> I have. I see what they go through. I see what they go through a lot. >> Handling all those kids at once is a >> Yes, it's a lot. >> But they're good. I love all of my students equally and it's a lot. Like, it's um a great experience to know what other ch children are thinking about and what how they act. you know, >> and I really appreciate everyone for having me in this program and having a chance to um step in and have fun because I'm definitely having fun with this program. >> Thank you. >> That's fantastic. >> Thank you. [applause] Janiah won um first place for her um preschool bulletin board and um it she

008had a Candyland uh theme and it teaches um colors and um it's like a color match game. It even lit up so and they had to go in front of the judges at Wayne State. Um Madison won for her book. Um we had uh several other um we gave a speech, taught a lesson, things like that. So it's been a great experience. So thank you very much. >> Good. Did she want to say anything or >> she Yeah. Janiah Janiah's um >> didn't want to say anything today, but she's wonderful wonderful students. I couldn't use her best. >> Great bulletin board. >> I have to say one of my favorite days of the year. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. >> I just want to say one of my favorite days of the year is when you guys

009come over because we show the the students that there's a lot of things that happen behind the scenes in a district and it's not just everything that happens in the classroom, but it takes all these other items to happen. And it is always one of my favorite days when they come through my office. They get to ask questions. I explain. I love that the one group came in today. We were in the middle of uh contract negotiations. So, they came in while we were in the union. and we paused their negotiations and but they got to see that that's an aspect of what happens and what makes things work around here and it's a great experience and like I say it's always one of my favorite days especially when we hand them that certificate saying

010hey when you do have that degree please come on back we will definitely give you that shot so >> and congratulations to you Mrs. Roberts >> thank you >> Yep. Oh, come on up here. We'll give you a card. >> Yeah. And I just wanted to say one more thing about Miss Roberts because um for those of you who might not know, she is retiring and um she did her 30 years with us and I just want to say that when I very first got this job as principal of the career center, my very first thing I wanted to do was get this program and I [clears throat] was like so excited about it and I brought it to the SEC committee and Heather was on the SEC committee and heard about it and immediately

011she called me and she's like, "I don't know who you are but I'm in." And I [laughter] was like, "Okay, you sound awesome." I'm like, "This is going to be great." And so, like, Heather literally helped me get this program off the ground and it is all her hard work got her back and just like I'm going to miss her so much. So, I just she's made such a difference in every single kid that goes through that program. [applause] So, I LOVE YOU. BUT, so I just want to say every kid that goes through that program comes to me and is like, "She's made such a difference in my life." like not just for this program that is you know helped me guide my career pathway but Heather as a person as well. So she's

012fabulous and we were so lucky to have her. So >> thank you very much. >> Thank you. [applause] >> Thank you. [applause] >> Okay. Now we have the swim team. Coach Snider. Oh, got another post. >> Just like the pretzels. >> I didn't bring any pretzels, though. >> Somebody said you guys like pictures, so I just brought >> Yeah, absolutely. Pictures are great. >> All right. So, I'm uh Coach Jason and glad that you guys let us be here tonight to talk about the good news of the swim team and the accomplishments we've had. Um, in the last two years, our boys and girls have had three win seasons. Uh, and the athletic director had said before, you know, Taylor's always coming in last place in the Down River League and not having any wins.

013And, uh, we did start out at zero or one win the first year I took over and we're up to three wins a season. So that's uh good for the team. Uh our team has been growing. So we thank you for the your support. In the four years I've been coaching or helping as a volunteer coach. My first year we uh the boys team had five swimmers and then it had eight. Then it had 11 and this year I had 13. Uh and this year when we were standing on the deck we were bigger than five other teams. W dot, Lincoln Park, uh, Southgate, Zel Ford, and Flat Rock, and we have the same size numbers as Milin and Erie Mason out of Monroe. So, we're growing, uh, more and more. Uh, the girls team

014in the last four years is at anywhere from 18 to 22 swimmers. The first year we had one Taylor swimmer in our co-op with Heron. Then we went to two. Third year was six, and this last year we had 10 out of 18. We're all from Taylor. So, the program's growing. So, we thank you for your support for that. That's a good news. [applause] I uh put a message on the app that we use for our uh schedules and everything and asked anybody who wanted to come and say what swim to them and why it's a good program for the to have. And you see we have a lot showing up to to tell you what they how how they feel. Uh we are a very uh uh high number of athletic scholars on our

015team which is good news. Uh, in the past three years, I've uh had nine swimmers swim uh u nine swimmers receive the academic all-American award from an association, a swim association I belong to with a 3.6 or higher GPA. Uh, six of six different swimmers have also won the all uh league athletic scholar awards from the down river league and the heron league that we swim in. And our team average GPA is 3.5 for for both teams. So the that's these guys are great. So um [applause] each year we participate in different invitationals in Dundee and in Riverview and all over the the uh Wayne County and Monroe area. And every one of these kids have won medals and individual and relay events uh throughout the last years. And so that's always exciting for them.

016Um and you know just when you talk about swimming in general there you know there's just things that the rhythmic motion is that soothing environment of the water that's meditative experience decreases stress anxiety and depression and I think that's you know one of the great things about where those high academic scores come from from these athletes. So >> and thank you >> thank you for your support and you can see our team is growing. They have lots of fun. They win lots of medals uh and we keep getting bigger and bigger. So, we thank you for your support and a few of them want to say a few things about what swim means to them and how how great it is for them. >> Perfect. Thank you. [applause] >> Uh, good afternoon. Um, my name

017is Jared Snder and I'm part of the swim team. Um, if that wasn't implied. Um, swim has had such a positive impact on my life social socially and uh mentally. Um, it has taught me a lot of discipline, teamwork and um really how to push myself and uh drive through forward through again social um aspects. Uh it has um helped me gain a lot of confidence and build a lot of relationships um that I wouldn't have had previously if I didn't have that confidence. Um swim really just helps students grow and stay active whether they're using it to stay active for other sports or just to swim in of itself. Um and I'd really like to thank you all for your support from our coaches, the school itself, and all of our community. Thank you.

018>> THANK YOU. >> [applause] >> HI EVERYONE. UH, MY NAME is Alex Mcnet and I'm a current ninth grader at Taylor High School and I've been on the swim team since sixth grade here. Um, swim has been very beneficial for me and for my health and it is one of the few sports that Taylor offers that is non-cont. I tried football and the physical contact just wasn't for me. My speed and endurance increased tremendously being a part of swim. I think it's great. I think it's a great program and coach Jason has been a great teacher of proper techniques. I look forward to competing again and beating my personal records. Thank you for your time. >> Thank you. [applause] [cough and clears throat] >> Good evening everyone. My name is Nolan Taylor and I've been

019part of the swim team for four years. Swimming has definitely affected me both physically and mentally. I think my social life and just the way I view myself overall has been impacted positively from swimming. I've been able to make a lot more friends and I've just gained a lot more confidence in myself. I've also learned a lot from swimming. I learned to build teamwork. I've learned discipline. And I've definitely learned that in order to improve, you have to put a lot of hard work into something and it's not just going to come out of the blue. And I think the great thing about swimming is that you can teach someone who doesn't really know a lot about it and you can teach them pretty easily because we have a lot of great coaches, uh, good

020captains, and we have great support. So, thank you guys for that. >> [applause] >> HELLO EVERYONE. My name is Payton Midter. I am a sophomore at here in high school. I have been swimming since freshman year. This team isn't just about laps. It's about the friends you meet along the way and the lessons you are taught. A family where no one is ever benched. Everyone swims, everyone improves, and everyone belongs. Let's keep our team in the water. [applause] All right. Hello everybody. My name's Hope Norris. I'd like to start by I'm a multiport athlete at Taylor and I would like to say um don't tell the other coaches but swimming is definitely my favorite. It has taught me confidence, discipline, and motivation to do other sports here. As so as I'd like to say these

021girls behind me are probably one of my closest friend family members. they are have taught me how to push through stuff and really be the best hope I could be. Um, another thing that I'd like to add being a multiport athlete again is in other sports I haven't seen it too much where everybody moves at their own pace but we're all still a family as in swim I feel like even the best people are still pushing like like the first years or people who are just starting out to be the the best them. So that's a huge thing for me. That's all I really have to say. Thank you. >> THANK YOU. >> [applause] >> HI EVERYONE, my name is Payton Mills. Um, I just wanted to I'm a sophomore at Taylor. I've been doing

022swim since I was in sixth grade. I just wanted to say that overall with like anxiety and stuff like that and like social anxiety and stuff like that. Swim has like definitely helped me being able to make more friends and communicate with other people like better and just like everybody comes together as a team and it's as doing other sports and stuff like that. I've never had this much of a family bond with other teams as I have this one. So that's all I wanted to say. >> Thank you. [applause] She really wanted to talk. [laughter] >> Hi. Good evening everyone. I'm Reina Garcia and I am a sophomore at Taylor High School. Oh, okay. Um [laughter] Um Oh. Um I just want to let you guys know swim is has a very important impact

023on everyone in this team. It brings a lot of bonds together. Keeps um I don't I don't know what to say like I don't know what to say. You don't have to. You're doing a great job. >> You're [clears throat] okay. >> Sorry guys, I'm not good at speaking right now. >> Okay. Um >> I don't It just brings a lot of people close together and it's a very good sport and you can do at your own pace and I don't That's really it. [laughter] Thank >> you. Thank you. [applause] >> Thank you for your time. I just want to point out Nolan was the only swimmer from here on his first year and now it's the other way. There's more here on swimmers than Taylor and Lucy was the only swimmer from Taylor during

024her years first year and now it's the other way around. Taylor has more than here on so it goes up and down with the co-op. So, thank you for keeping the co-op together and keeping us going. >> Yep. And [applause] cadet coming back. Thank you. Jason, >> can we have the ladies and gentlemen come back up here for a minute? >> Sorry, Kathy. Yeah. Come on up and get your card. >> I'm sorry I keep forgiving. It's not my job. You told me I had no cards. [laughter] >> Yeah. I don't know. Do you mind if I say something as a parent of one of the Go? I just want to say I'm uh I'm one of the parents of one of the swimmers and I'm one of the coaches here for the girls wrestling

025team here in Taylor. But I will say one thing about the co-op with Taylor and here on with swimming that I can see throughout the other sports is it's nice to go into other venues and that these other teams they come together with Taylor where when you're sitting in the stands in these other sports they're just so segregated. you know, these other school districts, they're just by themselves where I can tell you this co-op, I have a daughter who graduated in 2019 and who was in the co-op with Flat Rock, too. And just to see that camaraderie with the parents from my perspective and when you're out in the public and you see these other parents from these other schools and they're out of the down river league area, it's nice to see them talk

026to one another and talk to the students and just the interaction outside of the school and the co-op. So, this is a great program knowing that I've had other kids come through there and you know, it's really good for these kids and these athletes. So, thank you. >> Thank you. >> [applause] >> Are you speaking about the with the swim team? With the swim team. >> Perfect. Go right ahead. >> Hi, my name is Elizabeth Gonzalez. Um, my child is actually a school of choice kid. Um, and us coming to this district, we've actually learned a lot. Marilina has been coming here since fourth grade. Um, and she's also been doing the swim team since she was been sixth grade. Um, it's actually helped her. It's boost her academic skills also. um this girl was

027had learning disabilities, things like that before I had brought her here to the district. Um and so when I brought her here to the district, her academic skills, her reading skills, everything went up. And um and I owe it to because of the sports. Um that's really been very powerful for these children for especially like for our case. Um Reena works really hard at making sure her grades are up so she can be on this swim team. Um the swim team has offered her a lot like with familywise, friendship wise, um academic wise. Um and I'm telling you, being a sports mom and seeing her in other sports, she really um collaborates well with the swim team. Um and the swim team, having two co-ops teams together has been excellent for this for this school.

028>> Yep. Yeah. Thank you. Congratulations to our swim team and and and everyone. And that's impressive at 3.5. So, [applause] keep up the good work. Now, we're moving on to what's happening 2026 summer. Marlene Scott and Bridget Jarvis. >> Hello. Good evening. Thank you. >> Uh Miss Jarvis and I are here today to inform you and our community um that we know the students mostly have summer off, but we have a lot planned for our teachers, students, parents um all throughout the district. So, we just wanted to go over those. Um we have some staff professional development planned that's offered to all teachers. That's the week right after we get out of school. So staff um are able to sign up for that. Throughout June, July, and August, we have some schools offering summer school

029programs. Um during June and July, we have a parent book study um which I offered for the first time this year that's run by one of our growthwork social workers. >> Yeah, tell me about that. >> Sure. It's um the anxious generation is the book that was offered. So I sent it out on parent square. just any parent that was interested um to read the book and have some discussions on Zoom um throughout the summer that was led by one of our social workers. >> Um and I didn't know what to expect um but it got completely full. >> You did it fabulous. That's great. Fantastic. >> Great. >> Um so I had purchased 30 books and then I had to close the form because I ran out of books. Um which was a great

030problem to have. So, we sent them home with some students or the parents picked them up from the board office. They requested how they wanted the book. Um, and then they'll meet throughout the summer um to read the book and have some guided discussion. >> Cool. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> And then Miss Jarvis. >> Yes. Um, okay. Hi everybody. Um, we are going to do the brainy book bus this summer. I had this idea um and I went to Emily and she greenlighted it and that's the best news when your boss says yes. So um we are going to every elementary school and we have some community partners that have joined up with us. So, we're going to take the bus from here to the school and there we are going to have books

031and snacks and we're going to have at every location the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum gave us a grant and they're going to be in place at every location doing hands-on activities and things that the kids can take home. We're also going to have at four of the stops, you can see Vision to Learn is joining us and they'll be doing screeners and be able to do examinations right there and um pick out eyeglasses all in the same time with students that have parents present. So, that'll be something that we'll have at those last four dates. Um we were really lucky to score them actually, so I was happy. And then we have Dearborn Midwest, which is one of our best partners. um their CTC, their community um action uh committee is going to give us

032some items that are studentfriendly and appropriate to pass out to our kids. We have no idea. It could be, you know, five kids. It could be 50 kids. I hope that lots of kids come and see what we're doing in our district and just get the word out. And if anybody here wants to ride the bus, it's going to take off on these times. We'd love to have you. So, please come and join us. We're really excited about it. And I have an updated flyer that I'll leave on the back table um just because the one um that you have in your packet didn't reflect the four dates from vision to learn because I'm adding people kind of all the way. So, >> thank you. >> You're welcome. >> Any questions? >> Okay. Thank you.

033>> No. Okay. Thank you. [applause] >> Okay. I will turn it over the agenda board and discussion items. >> Okay. Okay. Uh, revisions, approval of agenda policy 0166. Do I have a motion to approve the agenda? >> Motion by Miss Fields. Is there support? >> Support by Mr. Mardski. Uh, Miss Block. >> Yes. >> Miss Fields? >> Yes. >> Miss Moore? >> Yes. >> Mr. Morarski? >> Yes. >> Mr. Morris says yes. Miss Shufelt is excused. Mr. Westfall. >> Yes. >> Uh, that carries 6. >> Okay. Now we'll move on to discussion items. We have the CTE cooperative agreements. Carly and [snorts] then she's going to move in after she we're finished with that into the AP cyber course. >> Yes. All right. Hello everybody. >> Sorry I'm all bundled up. I was in the

034parade and I came right here so I was like okay so um the first thing I have is our cooperative agreements. Um we do this every year with our out of district schools. So um we have Alen Park, Lincoln Park Summit and Trillium that were all signed by their school boards. Um, and then so now I have them for you guys to sign and then um if you um look those over and agree and sign then I'll send those back to them and then both of us will have >> Okay. My question about is the date on here is June 3rd. Does that need to be changed before signatures happen? >> Um, no. That was like the very last board meeting. So that's why I because I wasn't sure when I would get on the

035agenda. So I just I just put >> Okay. That's I just didn't know if it needed to be changed or anything before we signed. >> No. Yeah. I just put that date in there because of that board meeting. Um but and then I actually we are working on one more school actually. So some um um success virtual learning and Taylor has actually reached out and um I do have a contract made up for them and they have it and they're coming over to tour and we um we might be forging that relationship as well. So um if that does work out then I will um get with Emily and then come back. So might be back with that one. But I wanted to get these ones in because these are >> we fill with our

036students first. >> Oh yeah. Yeah. That's that's in the that's in the agreements that our Taylor students have um the spots first and then when we do our enrollment with those schools, the students do a first choice and a second choice. So we fill up with Taylor High first and um TVLA and then um if the classes aren't full then district kids will go in and then if they are then they'll go to their second choice. Y >> and then um we haven't had to go on weight list ju just because the kids will go to their second choice instead of wait. So um so yeah um okay and then the next thing um I have Oh any questions then on that one? >> Nope. >> Okay. Um so next up then is our um

037AP cyber security course proposal. So a few years ago we brought um cyber security um here to get approved as a course. We've been running cyber security now for four years um with uh Miss Hail in our computer labs and um she has um gotten so much interest in it and she's been putting so much um effort and learning into the cyber security that we um started offering a year two um to the students that wanted to continue on with her that were not seniors. And um this year she's been doing a lot of research on instead of it being a year two cyber security offering an AP um section of that so we can offer more AP opportunities to the students. The curriculum that they were doing for year two was like almost identical

038anyways. So like why not get them that AP credit and get them that chance to go take that AP test and get those college credits. Um so we did apply for a grant. we got an $800 grant for her this summer to go through the AP um uh professional development for that and um you know if it's approved here and then we can um move into offering um AP cyber security. Um I will say that a little bit in in the proposal here is um some really cool facts is that in the state of Michigan there are only 3.6% of schools offering cyber security and we are one of those schools. So that's a really awesome thing that we offer our students and um if you did, you know, we did a little bit of

039research and there are 500,000 open cyber security jobs right now. So the the comprehensive needs assessment is there. The the career opportunities are there and you know we are offering that to our students which is is a really um awesome thing for our kiddos. So um let's see what else do I have in here. Um, so we did do a little bit of research on, you know, if we were going to just do AP cyber, but we decided that we wanted to stick with still offering a a cyber security year one course. Um after re after um interviewing our current students and interviewing other schools that are looking into this opportunity as well, um we did we did feel that um offering only AP might deter some kids who who want to go into it

040and might not think that maybe AP is for them. So we are we are sticking with um offering cyber security first and then AP would be like their next course. Um we are going to make it a prerec but we are going to offer um recommendation by counselor and um teachers if they did want to skip over the year one and go into just right away AP. We would be fine with that looking into the teacher recommendation and talking with counselors. So >> So this would be like a like a 101 course in college that would be covered potentially. Okay. >> Yes. Yes. and they would get the college credits for it and then they could take that AP test during AP testing time. >> Thank you. >> Any other questions for Carly? >> No.

041>> This sounds really cool. >> Yes, I'm very excited about it and our teacher has been doing so much research on this. So, she's she's very prepared and she's very ready. So, >> thank you. >> Okay. Thanks. Next, we have the uh curriculum proposal for K through2 phonics UFli. Miss Scott. Hello again. Um, this evening I'm presenting uh it's pronounced UFly Uli. It stands for uh Florida Literacy University of Florida Literacy Institute. Um, and over the last eight months, our K2 classrooms have been using SAVS My View. That's our new K5 literacy curriculum um which is a comprehensive ELA program including the phonics piece um that is included in my view. Um during this time lots of our K2 teachers have also been piloting UFly in their classrooms and many of them absolutely love it

042and they were using it prior to the curriculum adoption um with Savas. UFly is an explicit and systematic program um designed by the University of Florida. The program [snorts] introduces students to the foundational reading skills necessary for proficient reading. It follows a carefully developed scope and sequence that aligns with our purchase curriculum. Um and UFly does not um charge for the use of their curriculum. Um so it complements really well the curriculum that we already have. Um our elementary teams felt very strongly that the phonics component that was in SAVIS was not as comprehensive as UFly which is um a complete program that just focuses on phonics. So it's going to be used K2. The proposal is for adoption of UFly for tier one instruction for K2 classrooms use alongside SAV. And then in our

04335 classrooms, it would be used for tier 2 and tier three students who are still struggling with phonics instruction. Um the teachers feel very strongly and really we've been able to train our teachers inhouse. Um we have a couple of great coaches including our literacy KOSA who are able to train teachers in district. We don't have to send them out for the training. they were able to um do a training session at Taylor Parks and actually have uh observe a teacher using a lesson with our students. So it was really a great experience for them and the only cost associated is really the materials that the um teachers use. So our teams felt strongly that we wanted to adopt this districtwide so that we can have some consistency in using the phonics program from UFly

044for K2 in combination with the literacy curriculum that we have. >> Uh just a quick question um with the early adopters um have we noticed uh significant improvements at this point already or is it still kind of too early? Um, I mean it's still a little early, but honestly, you know, if you ask the teachers, absolutely they see the difference. And in the, you know, they don't start state testing in MSTEP until third grade, but in our local assessment, they really, um, see a huge difference in their, especially those that are using it with fidelity right now, >> they are seeing a big difference. >> Thank you. Yeah, I've heard good things about the program, too. Um, but kind of what he said, will we get data a year from now, two years from now,

045showing how well it's working? Because we generally don't get any test data at all here at the board. I It's kind of like not talked about, but I I think if we're going to do a program like this, I would like a six month, a one-year, an 18month assessment to see how it's working. >> Yeah. I mean I absolutely can compile um you know kind of what you're talking about the difference between the schools where it has been you know some of the early adopters and then those where we're just kind of starting you know the teachers are just being trained and they're um you know just starting to implement it. So I can come back you know in the fall or next year and present some of that data. >> I would love to

046see that. Thank you. >> Sure. the the um the the staff that was involved in the piloting and whatnot they can I don't need to know a number unless it's 100% are they overwhelmingly >> overwhelmingly yeah >> okay >> I think it was like 99% I mean people coming back to me why did you pass this without you know thank you >> yep >> any other questions >> thanks guess you're good now we have the lease agreement between the Taylor school district district and the Taylor Seahawks little league football. Mr. Weer. >> Yes, thank you. I know back in the fall um we had representatives from the Taylor Seahawks uh come forward and talk about the partnership that we've had with them where they've been using uh the Kennedy football field out back here for

047several years. Uh there were concerns they had obviously at the time because we knew we were going to be going through our renovation process of our athletic fields at Taylor High School and there were concerns about what was the long-term uh where we stood on that partnership and I know the board had tasked me at that time to go ahead and let's lock in a partnership with them going forward. So tonight, what you have in front of you is an actual uh written contract where they would have use of that facility for the next uh 3 years and we would then go into renewing it from there. Um as long as this keeps going, uh the only thing that we had put in as one of the things and it would exist in any contract,

048but if there was something that came up and we needed to take first use of the field, well then we would have that dibs as we are the the owners of the field. Uh I don't foresee where that comes in at any point at this at this uh level. But um this is what you guys tasked me back with in uh the fall and we do have that for you today to to give them that uh keep that partnership going. Uh one of the concerns we had was we've had this partnership with them for a really long time, but it's never been down on paper. It's never been written down and and now we have it where it's clearly spelled out for all parties. Have the have the um Seahawks looked over the contract that

049>> Yes. >> and they're they're good with everything. >> Yeah, I met with them. Uh well, I talked to him on the phone last week. Uh Paul Arquette, who is their president and then I met with him uh and another representative from the Seahawks just uh on Tuesday to go over it. They signed their end. I just informed them that I can't sign it until you guys officially vote and give me the authority to sign it. And so, uh, but they're they're already in agreement and sign their side of the the >> gives them some security. They didn't have that before. >> Absolutely. >> So, they couldn't plan from year to year without something like this. >> Hey, do we lease off the softball field or the baseball? Does that belong to somebody? >> Yeah,

050that's I believe uh one of our teachers uh does uh get a permit and uses that for it's not through our school athletics, but it's their own that they're involved with coaching, but yes, [clears throat] we do partner with them as well. >> Okay. Yeah, I just saw him out there and had didn't realize. >> Busy out there most nights. >> Yeah. Okay. And next we have the Michigan High School Athletic Association 2026 2027 membership. Mr. Wagger. >> Yeah. This is just our annual where we need to uh come to our agreement to remain as a member of the MHSAA and continue participating in all the programs and all the athletic competitions that are associated with it. >> Okay. The set SIG insurance renewal. I just had a quick question. >> Oh, I'm sorry. >>

051Um, I know that the uh the athletic association has been looking into a name, image, and likeness >> uh policy. Um, I just wanted to make sure that uh we here administratively are like aware of that and that we're doing what we need to do dealing with it. >> Yeah, absolutely. We have and I've made sure that uh Mr. Simons, our athletic director, is aware and uh that's out there. Um I don't think at this point it's something that we've even thought about how we're going to approach or if we're going to be involved in that. But yeah, that is one of the new issues coming forward from the MHSA. >> Mr. Morris, could you elaborate please? I had a hard time. Um, so there there's been some work in Lancing for the past few

052years of creating essentially a high school version of the collegiate name, image, and likeness um kind of efforts to make sure that um people who are you know incredibly talented athletes um at the high school level have an opportunity to get uh you know sponsorships from local business interests and things like that. Um, this has already been implemented in numerous other states to the point where we're actually losing student athletes uh, previous to some of the to the association stopping up and creating some policy around it. So now we can keep our athletes here in Taylor and other you know surrounding communities and uh, our business interests around us if they wish you could invest in those athletes. >> No, that's fascinating. So my question is do >> Oh, there we go. So, is this

053like the old NCAA rules from like 10 years ago that they're banned from doing a sponsorship? Is that what this is? There like a ban in there now? >> I don't know. There used to be. They're opening the door to the NIL now, just like college. >> There used to be a ban. So, hypothetically speaking, I'm a great swimmer. Okay. And the swimmer wants to be sponsored by, I don't know, the local car dealership. You're saying under the old rules, they couldn't do that. >> Correct. >> Yeah. But those rules are no longer part of this. >> Going forward, that was proposed uh by the MHSA within the last year. Yes. Oh, >> okay. That's interesting. I I did not know that we that that restriction existed years ago. I did not know that. >>

054Okay. Anyone else? >> All right. Now, we have the set seg removal renewal. Dr. Hill. >> Yes. >> Okay. And we do have uh Paul and Tony from Setse if you have specific questions that you would like them to answer from uh their perspective. They are here to answer whatever you guys have. >> Yes. Hello. And I just want to say that um Mike was able to negotiate a wonderful rate, you know, between um >> I don't think it was just me. You you were part of this too when we were talking. we were able to negotiate a better rate um uh and secured a rate from set sag um the cost being $376,430 uh for our um property auto general liability educators legal liability etc versus what we used to pay with Mike Maz

055sale. It's about from last year it's about a $184,000 savings. >> We weren't with set seg before though. So this isn't a renewal. It's a >> correct. It's new. >> Okay. Okay. So it's not a renewal. >> So it's not a renewal. Okay. >> We're renewing our insurance. Yeah. I just want to make >> it's with a different company. >> Absolutely. That's just what I wanted to make clear to everybody on the board. >> Yes. >> Because I was just going to ask how long have we been with them? So that answers that what >> next year. >> Not even 10 [laughter] minutes. >> Yeah. Next year. >> Yep. Wait till we vote on it. Then you can ask how long. [laughter] >> Is there anyone on the board who has any questions? >> Yeah.

056>> So are there any limits to the coverage? Is there any liability for us or does this cover everything? >> Is there like a self-insuring component for us, you know? >> Sure. Sure. Uh I'm Paul Grinky with Satag. Um what we ended up doing was based off of what Dr. Hill provided um in terms of the coverage that you guys have had or currently have um we took those limits and applied those against our rates. So what we try to do is apples to apples. There's certain areas where it's not the exact just based off of I think philosoph philosophical differences. We're one of a few pools in the state of Michigan that exists out there. And so we have kind of our philosophy of what we feel like schools need when it comes to

057liability uh coverage. Um and so with that, I think we went through that process with Dr. Hill uh and Mr. Wager. >> But just for the public, approximately what are the limits? At what point do we have to kick in money to just just a general overview for the public? >> Yeah. Um let me see here. I believe they're also >> I know based off of just like the property uh you like the out of pocket that a school would have per claim you guys currently have a $5,000 deductible. I think it's going to be a $10,000 is what it's >> it's going to be a $10,000 deductible. >> deductible and then your limit is what you have based on like your property and contents we discussed. It's a blanket limit of everything that uh

058Taylor D school district owns. So you guys have what we have a valuation of $310 million across districtwide and that's what we have coverage for you guys uh for uh the property. As far as with just some of the other other areas like um your general liability or excess limits. Um you guys currently have a million dollars of underlying limits for a general liability per occurrence. Um and then as well as then a 10 million excess which is your umbrella. So as far as what you guys had carried before or what you currently carry now based off of I think uh the te the kind of the landscape when it comes to public entities and school districts like you guys are in a really good spot and I let uh your administration and Mr. Wager

059and Dr. Hill know as far as with where you're currently covered like you guys are sitting pretty well there. So that's what we also quoted and what we also provided. Thank you. >> I just have one question. Go ahead. >> Why Why was it that we switched from whatever company we had prior? >> Because of the price. >> Oh, because of price. >> Absolutely. Um it it is advisable to shop your insurance, >> right? >> Okay. So with um Mazeel you know for example for 2025 we paid 546,000 and then for 2526 school year we paid 560,000 and then with the Mazelle pool a very large school district left and they're going to be looking to cover that coverage. So we would have went up even more than that. So >> that that that's all

060the explanation I needed. But I was just curious as to >> why the switch. >> Absolutely. >> You turned yourself off. [laughter] >> We were about to pay a lot more than what we're currently paying. >> That's That's fine. >> That's pretty much what we do with the health insurance or what they do with the health insurance is shop that every year. >> Thank you. Um Board of Education meeting schedule 26 year 2026 2027. Mr. Wagger. >> Yep. in your packets. Uh we do have the meeting schedule that is proposed for next school year. Uh keeping where we uh do our best to have those discussions on the first meeting as the committee of the whole. We know that sometimes action still has to take place at those meetings and then followed by the second

061meeting of the month is like this one where it's that regular uh meeting with discussion and action items. But everything is pretty much exactly the same way we've done it. still six o'clock starting times and pretty much just a rinse and repeat of the last year's. >> So my discussion here is I've been approached by parents over the course of the year or two saying well maybe they want a later start time that six was rough on people getting here and I said okay when it finally comes up for a vote I'm going to propose that. So I was thinking maybe a 6:30 or a seven. Is there any agreement for that? Because I mean six is pretty early when you look at other meetings. When you look at like when a lot of other

062school districts meet, a lot of other townships, a lot of other cities, six is on the early side. >> I know some cities have done seven. I just thought 6:30 might be nicer for the parents. >> Yeah, I'll come either way, but >> I would have to think it over. So I I would go ahead. I'm sorry. >> Oh, you're good. I would have to think it over. I'd be willing to vote on this and then make an amendment if we decided to at at you know the next meeting. Is there anybody else interested in the 6:30? I'm just curious. >> Yeah, I think we can. It's open for discussion and we put it up for discussion at the next uh >> Well, yeah. What I would recommend is it's, you know, by Robert's rules,

063if you table something, it can has to come back up in the next meeting. So, if you tabled it today, you took a vote to table it, you could then make that adjustment next meeting. And >> so, we can do that. It's not going to cause a problem if we wait till the next meeting. >> No, I what would cause a problem is if we don't approve it by the end of June. So, we have two more meetings to make sure we have it. But that that won't be an issue. So, >> okay. >> You guys have any opinions down here whether >> I'm like you. I'm retired. >> Yeah. Some of the clocks getting especially if we have a late night. It's close to bedtimes. >> But yeah, if one of my colleagues want

064to think about it, let's just postpone table whatever word you want to use and then that's it. Yeah. >> So, so okay, let me get this straight. So, we we're talking about it tonight. We'll put it on the next agenda for a vote. >> Yeah. I think when we get to the basically the action items, you're going to basically amend your what's in your packet to say we are table taking a vote to table it till the >> or a motion to postpone to a definite time I think would be appropriate that well to table the calendar altogether. >> Yeah, I I think that's fair. >> I I was thinking that they would be all I was thinking [clears throat] the dates you are probably perfect. It's just the times >> correct correct that's what

065you're saying Mr. Madarski if I'm >> Yes, sir. I am sure. >> Yeah, because you could couldn't really split You couldn't say we're going to approve the dates now with a time later. That would be correct. >> Elementary complicated. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, for Okay. So, we'll table that when we get to the action items and then we'll bring it up next time. I would, you know, I I like the 6:30. So, whatever. That's my opinion. So, whatever you guys >> I wouldn't want to start time any later than 6:30. >> Yeah. >> No, me neither. I think 6:30 is good. >> Yeah. >> I mean, I had a parent say 8:00 and I'm like that that's not going to work. So, [laughter] I think 6:30 is kind of a good Yeah. >> Yeah.

066>> Okay. All right. Where are we at tonight? Overnight conference requests. Two for Mesa and two for I don't know what that AASA >> it's two total. One is uh MASA's fall conference and the other is the AASA National Conference on Education. Um for the last two years, I have attended uh both these conferences. I'm coming forward today as part of my professional development uh to propose going to those again. Uh I uh do bring back a lot of ideas, lots of different vendors that I get proposals from and different uh learnings and we do apply those to what we do here in the Taylor School District. And funny we're talking uh setseg today because I know at MASA's fall conference last year I'd attended the risk mitigation uh session and man that was eye

067opening as to why you do take some of these things and you have to make sure you you are very thorough in how you approach different actions that are taken throughout a school district. So we do take that learning we bring it back and we apply it to our to our practice. So, um I do want to say particularly about AASA because that is the national superintendent conference. About a week and a half ago, I was approached by uh Dr. Glenn Mleco. He's the state superintendent uh that he requested that I do a presentation with him at and at the national conference in Atlanta on our student advisory programs. he is uh making student advisory at the state level which is a whole new concept and a new way to do it and uh he

068wanted us to be able to present how it looks at a local level and how it looks uh when you try to do this as a statewide program as well. So it's hard to tell the state superintendent when he calls you and say yeah I'm not interested. So, um, absolutely. I wanted this opportunity and that's one of the reasons why we put this on there is that I think we have some great things we can go out there and and push forward about what we're doing in Taylor schools for giving students voice and agency in our our school district. >> Yeah. And that's impressive having the state superintendent ask you to present. So, >> absolutely. I was very happy to get that call. [laughter] >> Kathy's back. [snorts] Okay. Okay. Now, we'll look at public

069comment regarding the agenda items only. Is there anyone wishing to address the board regarding anything that we've talked about? You know, um I'm sorry. Uh I don't have my speech. Please approach the bench and state your [laughter] your name and address. >> Heard it before. >> Be nice. How about that? You have three minutes. Right. Right. >> Rich Pratt. Uh 2443 Hayes Taylor. Um it says, "I saw the um Seahawks agenda was on the or TX agreement is on the agenda and it actually came up yesterday at the bamboo meeting. Has their practice schedule been factored into the high school using the field all summer for all of the sports? Was that factored in?" >> Can you just restate that? I think I missed part of the question. >> So with the Seahawks schedule >>

070Yeah. >> with them having a contract for the field >> Yeah. Was that factored in when the athletic department figured out the scheduling with the rest of the >> Yeah, we we've had those discussions. Um the Seahawks are well aware that obviously with our situation with the renovations. Um and that's why even this spring they have probably done a little less out there than they normally would have because they know we've been out there with our soccer uh teams. They know we've been out there with our track teams, all the all our spring sports. So Oh, yeah. Absolutely. a little worried last night when because we know their insurance means that they cannot share the field. There weren't going to be any conflicts. Um >> no, we should be good. Um because even when we've

071had our athletic meetings, the discussion has been that um let's say for whatever reasons they start to fall behind on some of the the the scheduling, they will pull people off of like working on the baseball fields or the softball fields at Taylor because we don't need those till spring. and all hands on deck will be to make sure that we're out of this area and back to to where we need to be. So, >> um, and one other question because we've heard a lot of concerns with scheduling the resources we have for athletics. Um, has there been any thought of the beautiful and it looks like regularly cut and no trees growing out of it field behind the career center? The TC field is still there with goalposts. It's you can only get to

072it through the bus garage, but I drove by it today and it looks I mean it's probably on hold, but it just seems like we've got a lot of resources that we aren't using and it might be >> absolutely >> something to consider. >> I'll talk about it with Mr. Simons and see what see what we can do. That makes sense to me. >> Thank you. >> Anyone else? >> I just had one thing on the access for the football field. So we did maintain as a district in article 4 uh the right to priority use of the premises uh for all school related activities and events. So we have right of first refusal essentially as a district. >> Thank you. >> All right. >> Oh mind. Go. Okay. Go ahead. Online. >> Hi. Uh

073Angel Thomas 151 Island Lake Drive. Uh, Taylor. Um, I also a kindergarten teacher at Kenyon. Um, I just wanted to uh speak on to you. Um, I I know um someone asked about the returns on that. Um, this is our second year, my second year piloting it, and I definitely see returns on that. Like the the the way my kindergarteners are learning letters and sounds and things like their I Ready scores this spring have been like amazing. like I I could not believe the growth that they made in reading especially in the area of phonics. So definitely the UFly program 100% is amazing as a as a from a teacher's perspective. So, I just wanted to speak on that cuz I know that it was brought up um if we're seeing a return on it,

074and we definitely are. Like it it if you get a chance to get into a classroom and see it in action, like you wouldn't believe what the kids are doing with um even writing and everything like their writing has been off the charts like since we started using newfly last year. So, I just want to speak to that. And I also wanted to say thank you to everyone that came out tonight for the parade cuz the seniors really had a good time. I have a senior this year so you know they really enjoyed it and they enjoy seeing everyone cheering them on. So thank you for that and thank you for continuing to do it year after year. >> Thank you Angel. We don't know what we're going to do. We don't have any of

075your kids left in the school district next year. >> I know babies get here. >> Thank you for everything. >> Take care, Angel. Thank you. I think our last one graduates this year. >> Okay, now we're going to Is that anyone else? >> Okay, then we're going to move on to action items and I will turn that over to Mr. Morris. >> Okay, action item one, Wayne Resa 2026 2027 general fund operating budget resolution. Whereas, this board received the Wayne Resa general fund operating budget on or before May 1st, 2026. And whereas in accordance with section 380.624 of the revised school code, the board must adopt a resolution expressing its support or disapproval of the proposed Wayne Resa budget and must submit to the Wayne Resa board any specific objections and or proposed changes the

076board may have to budget prior to June 1st, 2026. Do we need to vote on that before I read the next part or do I just assume that we're okay? Uh, therefore, be it resolved that the Wayne Resa general fund operating budget for the 2026 2027 school year be supported and that the secretary of the board is hereby directed to submit a copy of the resolution to the Secretary of the Wayne Resa Board of Education along with comments. 086it's been in with our senior students today. It started with Miss Graham and I and several of our other uh administrators and directors and principles, all that with serving our seniors breakfast this morning. So, uh, literally Miss Graham and I were the ones, uh, plating the plates for them and handing it to our seniors as they came and got their caps and gowns and got everything ready for that big day that happens next week. Um, then to cap it off with our senior parade, which as I said the at our last meeting is always such a great event and uh, it was a great turnout in the park and I really thank everybody for coming out there. I thank the board for taking the vote last week to push back an hour for this particular

087meeting uh so that we weren't rushing or being there because I think they wrapped it right about 6:05 6:10. So uh we would have been in a little bit of trouble I think if that didn't happen. So I appreciate that flexibility from the board of education. Uh the only other thing I want to say is you know this weekend we have our Memorial Day break. We do have no school on Friday and no school on Monday. And typically this is that last break where you need that resting, you need that relaxing and recharging to to hit that big finish where we close with our final exams, close with graduation, do all those things. So, uh to our staff and students, use this as that opportunity to get ready for that final push of the school

088year uh when we come back. I also want to encourage uh everyone in our community to remember uh also why we have these days off and it is to celebrate those that gave their ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in service of our country. So I want to encourage everybody to reflect on that uh while they have that opportunity to rest and relax and get ready for the final push. And that's what I have tonight. Thank you. >> Thank you. Is there any items scheduled for next agenda? I know that the 100 mile club will be here. Think of anything else off hand, Becky? >> Oh, yeah, that's right. And the board meeting of any >> Yeah, the tabled item will be coming next next on June 3rd. Other than that, I don't know, but

089I'm sure we'll have lots of good things for you. Um, general public comment. Is there anyone wishing to address the board with regard to any anything? Anyone online? >> Of course. Can't hear the people online. >> Good evening. This is Caroline Pat 6860 Jackson. I just had a couple questions in regards to the football field there with a contract with Seahawks. Uh who is going to be in um taking care of the fields like cutting them, lining them? Um and does that include the concession stand and bathroom? And if so, who takes care of that also? and reassured. >> So, as part of the agreement we have with them, um they will be the ones responsible for the mowing, the cutting, the upkeep, the the maintenance of the facilities out there. Uh the one thing

090that we did agree that we will be handling as a district is the the striping. Um and that is part of what the cost of that goes into what the cost of the lease agreement is. >> Okay. And then the bathrooms, I think there's there a bathroom there. Would we be t taking care of that too? Or is it portag johns? >> I don't think that they've used that bathroom in quite a while. I think that they've typically brought in their own portagons and I think that is the plan that they were uh going to commit to uh going forward. >> Okay. Yep. >> All right. Thank you. >> Thank you, Caroline. Anyone else? >> All right. Board member comments. >> Well, I'll start. I just want to reiterate the superintendent. Uh the parade was

091wonderful and thank you for everyone who organized and put it together. Um I'm sure uh you know a couple of the seniors are a little bashful but overall it was a very enjoyable time and I'm sure they'll remember it for the rest of their lives. So thank you for everyone who put the effort into getting that going. It's a wonderful tradition we have. >> The honors convulsation over at the college the other night was fantastic. >> It was really done very nicely. >> Yep. I and I recommend using the community college every year. They'll part with it and we have amazing kids. >> They have for two years in a row and we will continue to to try to keep using that as the venue. Absolutely. >> Yep. So, the the parade today was um

092really fast. That's what I noticed in the past. So, I don't know if they made them go slower or if there were more that many more kids, but where I was, it was done at 5:49. >> Oh, wow. >> On the other side. >> Yeah, >> it was done for me after. >> So, I think [laughter] what we noticed was uh it was taking longer on the back end because of uh there was somebody out there taking pictures of every single car. And I think you're you're right. By the time they got around the other end, it was going much slower. >> Okay. Any other comments? No. Okay. Then we are going to move into um close session. >> Um adjournment to close session policy 0137.2. Pursuant to the Michigan Open Meetings Act, as amended,

093I move that the board of education convene in close session to consider materials exempt from public disclosure under section 8H of the Open Meetings Act. Is there a motion? >> Motion. >> Is there support? >> Support. >> Motion by Miss Fields, supported by Miss Moore. Uh, Mr. Mardski. >> Yes. >> Mr. Morris is yes. Miss Shufeld is excused. Mr. Westfall? >> Yes. >> Miss Block? >> Yes. >> Miss Fields? >> Yes. >> Miss Moore? Yes, >> that carries 6. We're going to close session at 8:17. >> All right, let's do it. Got to hit at 8:53 p.m. >> Okay, I have Do we need anybody else here? Do I have a motion to adjurnn? >> Motion to adjurnn. >> Support. >> Okay. Motion by Mr. Murdki, support by Mr. Morris. Mor Morris, >> yes. >>

094Dufalts excuse. Westfall, >> yes. >> Block is excused. Um, Fields, >> yes. >> More is a yes. And Murdarskis, >> yes.
