001I know that's even better. But but I think that will just solve all the problems right there by knowing the date. I'd like to call the uh March 4th committee of the whole meeting to order for the Taylor School District at 6 PM. Fields >> Morris here. Murdarkski >> here. >> Morris >> here. >> Shufeld is excused. Westfall >> here. >> Ian Block >> here. Please rise for the pledge of allegiance followed by a moment of silence for the loss of our student Ella this past week and keep her in our in our prayers and honor her. I pledge algiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republicy. >> Thank you. >> Okay, we have scheduled reports facilities and trans want to throw uh something out there for procedure for

002anybody. >> Um we've kind of been revising and trying to find a way we we have when we have the audience participation sometimes we have a difficulty especially with people online uh being able to get their proper contact info because you can't always hear it well. You can't always get it through the Zoom always that great. So uh we're trying to improve that process. So you'll notice uh if you are on Zoom or if you're in the the audience tonight, we are putting up a QR code now that you can scan and that way you can give us your contact information when you are speaking online uh from the online audience and even here in the boardroom we'll have the QR code up. We're also going to be posting up QR codes in the back

003so that you have that ability. So, if your intention is that you want to speak before the board at audience participation, please use that QR code, give us that feedback information, uh, so we have that contact and that we can go from there. So, I just wanted to throw that out there. Just another way we're trying to improve and, uh, have a better kind of account for for [clears throat] who we need to call back and how we need to reach out. But my my question on that though is do they ha So, if you're in person, do they have to scan the QR code or No. If I had to and uh I don't have the policy memorized off the top of my head. Um I believe that it is typical that you are

004going to have like most districts and even here you they call it a blue card and it is part of our process technically that that should be getting filled out. But rather than manually filling out a form now we're going to have it where you can just scan and fill the that out instead. But what if someone's not comfortable scanning the QR code or their phone doesn't support that or they have a they didn't bring the phone? >> If you're in person, I have no problem having a a paper copy still for those. It's just a way of having another option to be able to record and have that information. >> Yeah. I just want to protect the people who are here, especially seniors who might not bring a phone with them. >> I don't

005think citizens, not high school seniors, but >> yeah, Becky will still have those forms in addition to doing the QR code, but just another avenue to to make it easier. Thank you. Okay, we'll move on with facilities and transportation committee. Kathy, >> uh we had our committee um on the 24th of February. And Jack, if you would step up in case when I go through this if anybody has any questions. Um we're starting the next phase in the roof replacement. That'll be in June. Uh we've had what's that company's name? CentOS. >> Centas. >> Okay. >> Cents. Uh we had their inspections and the corrections are in the process of being done. Uh the drinking fountains with B uh bottle fillers are being installed uh with the with the fil with the filters. We have

006until October 2026 to complete it. However, um we are already 80% complete now. So we're ahead of the schedule. Um, and due due to the the weather, there was there's been two floods at West and on 33 the replacement floors will be delivered. And I wanted to ask Jack, why you didn't wait until summer to replace? Why is the floors being done now at West? >> Well, it because we had so much water when the restoration company came out, they they weren't guaranteeing us that all the water was removed underneath the gym floor. So if we would have waited, we would have had another issue. We' had a mold issue. Then we would have had to shut the building, the complete building down for you. We we don't know how long it would have taken.

007>> Okay. And then I know, excuse [clears throat] me, there were concerns about an odor that was that people were smelling there that everybody kind of panicked about. Can you explain that? >> Yeah, at first it was a musty smell um when because the gym floor has been down for 60 years. So there was a musty smell and then they smelt like a a wood burning smell when they started cutting the floor out. >> And do we have explain EKS and what their process was involved in these floors? >> Well, we did hire a state certified abatement company and a state certified environmentalist. They came out the the project was done in the evenings after hours and EKS monitored the air throughout the day. We then uh posted the daily uh results on on the

008the wall every day. >> And I do believe uh Mr. Wagger, you were told as well from the inspector that um our facilities department went above what they needed to do. Is that correct? >> Yeah, that is correct. They were very happy with um the way we were posting the results daily and that we were being very clear and transparent about uh what the air quality was like and they were very much saying that that isn't always required and the the ability the fact that we were putting that out there and having that for everyone to view within the building was a huge step and kudos to to Jack and Patrick and everybody for making sure we were doing that communication for sure. >> I'd like to express my appreciation as well. Well, I know

009how stressful it was last week from thousands of miles away, I was hearing about it. So, >> it was and we just want to make sure we're safe that, you know, when I met with the state inspector Thursday, you know, he he inspected everything. He's like, "Yeah, we we did the right thing." >> Appreciate you. >> And then the um on the grounds, we discussed parking lots and you're already in meetings. >> We are >> regarding Moody and Johnson's. >> Yes. We met with PA uh one of the civil engineers uh with Mike and Patrick and we are going over that process now to get that taken care of. Yes. >> Okay. Anybody else have any questions for him before I bring up Nishan? >> Thank you. >> Thanks Jack. >> Okay. Under the transportation

010report uh assistant director uh Nan has um is going to discuss the uh next come on up Nan. the the next phase um bus purchasing phase. >> Hello. So, we are looking to go to the second phase um the second year. So, we're looking to get uh four full-size buses and a replacement truck wrecker. Um and yeah, we got several buses that um four that were tagged by the state. Um we just finished state inspection. um definitely did better than a few other districts in the area. So definitely thankful for that. Um had no um didn't cause us to have any procedural problems or any problems getting kids to or from. So that's definitely a plus. Um so we just want to make sure we have those backup buses. We want to make sure uh

011we're getting the fleet a little bit newer. Um and yeah. >> Have the have the outside cameras has that started now? >> Uh we're still in the warning phase for that. Um, so they are currently tracking who's passing the buses and what they're doing now is they're sending uh warnings in the mail, letting the know what the law is when that date starts that the tickets will be going out and things like that. >> So they are operational though. >> Yes. And I just had a meeting today. Sorry. I just had a meeting today with bus patrol um in in we started last Monday the 23rd. We had uh 309 um cars that went went through our reds which 279 the police department had looked at and said those are you know they are tickets

012so with 90%. >> And in Detroit's first three days they said it was 93 >> we did it of it. Good good >> and like Nan was saying Detroit we we just had our uh recent meeting for supervisors and Detroit in uh 3 days had 703. So, they did issue tickets on that. >> Yes, they're they're in the warning of the warning. We got a 30-day warning, right? So, they'll get a a letter in the mail saying, you know, you were seen um passing through our reds. You know, it's it's >> this is your warning. We've got the cameras out. So, they are being forewarned that. >> So, in 30 days, they'll start issuing tickets without warning. Perfect. >> Good. Thank you. and N Sean um all the board got all the information on all

013the different bus how many special ed buses and how many So we're doing four full-size buses. Um there's a two of them are going to replace fulls size buses that are on special needs runs but they're they're in a regular bus. Um and then there's no special ed this year. Uh instead of doing the special ed bus, we were looking at getting a truck, a wrecker truck to replace our current one. >> Yeah. And when we had this conversation, I I think my my favorite line of the day was, "We're sending a record to go get our record." Exactly. >> And uh that's not a good spot to be in at this point. Um and I think that what gets lost when we look at some of our neighboring districts and when we look at

014this as a cost, >> many of our neighboring districts do not have the same transportation needs that we do. They have much smaller transportation departments. They don't have as big a fleet as ours. So our needs are a little different. And we said that at when we talked about this that we'd like to explore. um this is a service we may be able to provide to other districts and to uh possibly be a revenue avenue as well if it is something that we could partner and put out there because uh again I I know when you said we were fared a lot better than some of our neighbors uh there were some who had some major issues due to their to their inspections and we were trying to reach out and help them as well

015because again that's what >> well using using our record would would help defay the cost then too >> correct You're 100% correct. >> As far as that goes to show you what what great mechanics we have because that record is older than our director. >> Yes, that record is [laughter] over 30 years old and it's older than me. Um, but it's kind of getting to that point where it's past that prime. It's hard to find parts. It's hard to fix it. Um, even the gauge cluster doesn't work anymore, so I can't tell how many miles are on it currently. Um, but it has gotten us through the last 30 or so years, so it's done us good. >> 30 or so years. No, I'm glad to see we're getting a new recorder. And then just

016to reiterate because this came up in the past, we've never contracted with a towing company. We've always towed our own buses. Correct. Good. I'm glad to see we're continuing to do that because we probably save a lot of money that way. >> Absolutely. >> Excellent. >> Well, I'm worried if we don't replace it, we will be going to >> Oh, yeah. No, no, I'm glad we're replacing. I love this. No, this is a great idea. >> We had to wait for a tow. you got, you know, you you figure you you may have kids on the um on the bus. We we we need to get the bus off the road. We can't sit and wait for a toll, you know. >> No, I agree with you. Yeah. >> Yeah. They've always told >> That's

017good. I'm glad we're doing it. >> I did reach out to a few companies and they told me the average time is about an hour, which we all we've all been there. It's never an hour. [laughter] But um whereas with us, we're coming from the yard. It's a 5 to 10 minute thing. So, we're >> keeping it going, >> right? That's great. No, I love it. Great. >> I just had one quick question um regarding the implementation of the bus or the cameras on the buses. Have we been communicating with the city so they know uh to expect this increase of yes potential confusion as you know cross governments always you know people think it goes to A or it goes to Bet. >> Yep. The police department was in on the whole thing and

018they actually have officers that are going to be uh their specific task are going to be to go through those tickets and do those things. So the police department has had a big part in this. >> Okay. Thank you so much. >> Y no problem. >> Thank you. >> Okay. Now we have the educ or the foundation update. >> Well, thank you again for your time on the agenda. Uh I'll be uh speaking to the uh first part of the uh presentation and then our president uh Kimber Jordan will take the second half. >> Perfect. Uh just bringing you up to date on a few things that we are in the process of doing. We have uh world fam honores. We had this uh event last year where we honored John Pantalone and Lauren Rosski.

019Um we had a committee actually put the uh looked over the nominations and the three that are receiving honories uh this year are Ken Nelson, Michael Mlan, and James Moore. Uh again, we will be having the uh gala on April uh 24th. You've got a flyer as a save the date uh flyer with you. Uh we'll be having another flyer going out once we uh have the uh honores actually on the flyer so people know who we're going to be honored up. Uh the other thing we're doing also you have a flyer for that too is a um restaurant fundraiser at Famous Stage. It's actually the third year we're doing it there at Famous Daves. Uh we continue choosing them because actually give us 20% of the proceeds for the evening where most restaurants are

020actually at uh 10%. Uh the other thing we're doing again this year is uh our dueling pianos uh event. Uh this will be the fourth year in a row now we're doing it. We had one in the fall. We made a little over $10,000. We had a really a lot of people showing up, a lot of money gained from um rappers we have and also from the tips that the uh they got the piano players got during the course of the evening. The other interesting fundraiser actually is through the staff at the school in the school district through their payroll deduction. Uh they're uh donating money to the U foundation. Each year we get a few more uh donators and we're we're anticipating as much as $7,000 for from them. And again, all that money

021is going to be eventually put back into the school system, which is what uh Kimber is going to tell you about. >> Thank you again for having us. So, yes, as uh Armando had explained, those are fundraisers that we do to to earn money, and this is how we distribute it. We have about $25,000 in grant money available that we distribute to teachers and principles for the 2526 school year. Um fall grants, there's 12 grants approved that are a total of 15,000. Uh 28 fall grants are were submitted with a total of $37,300 or $700. $10,000 in the winter grants. Um those are being um evaluated and will be distributed as well. We also helped finance uh 40 tickets to the uh Mamma Mia at the Fisher Theater for high school band, drama club, and

022coral group students. Um the tickets are also provided for the staff and the bus driver. So that's part of what our fundraising goes towards. Continuing presentations at school staff meetings to promote our foundation programs. We continue to to uh be in front of a lot of the staff meetings to show what we do and explain uh what our program is about. We also continue to utilize champions at each school to help promote those event events. We're continuing to promote foundation events through Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber, Down River Business Association, Band Booster Vendo Vendor, um, excuse me, Ban Booster Vendor Expo, and Hala Palooa. This last uh, fall uh, was our first time um, attending the Halapalooa. That's about 2400 2500 kids that come through there. That's a lot of exposure. we we've given out

023bags with our logo on it and we um had some sponsors on that bag as well. So, it it's a good way to to expose ourselves to a lot of students and and um understand what we do. And lastly, we utilize the funds that were donated by Kyle Wright to finance two years of the kindergarten petting farm field trips and two years of fourth grader uh field trips to U of M Dearborn Environmental Center and two years of the special traveling zoo that goes to the Johnson Preschool. So, um, again, we continue to fund raise and then we continue to distribute and it all goes to our students here in city of Taylor. Thank you. >> Thank you for all your packet. Actually, the the grants that were given out so I know what's teachers

024actually got. >> Thank you, Londo and Timber for all of your hard work. >> I just wanted to say the the choices for the wall of fame honoring his great choices. Um, I've known uh Ken Nelson and Michael Mlan over time, but the one I didn't know was this James Moore until recently when I'd say back in the fall, I had uh the family of James Moore reach out and tell me this amazing story of how he had pushed and advocated for counseling in elementary schools. And that's something we don't even really do anymore. But at the time he had this program where we were providing that extra stuff supports to elementary and I was amazed at the story and I think that's a a a great person to have on there as well. I

025think it's three great choices. So >> and he actually got a reward for doing on award for doing the work. >> Yeah, absolutely. He was recognized I believe by the state of Michigan at the time or one of the organizations for for the work he did. So I love it. >> Thank you. Okay, I will turn this over to Lori. Thanks. >> Agenda board discussion items. Uh, revisions approval of the agenda policy 0166. Is there a motion to approve the agenda? >> Motion by Miss Moore, supported by Miss Fields. >> Uh, Miss Moore. >> Yes. >> Mr. Morarski. >> Yes. >> Mr. Morris is a yes. Miss Shufeld is excused. Mr. Westfall, Miss Block, Miss Field. That carries 6. Moving on to discussion items. All right. We will start with the district calendar. Um for

02626, 27, 27, 28, and 28, and 29. Fabulous. Long time coming, Shauna. Thank you. >> Hello. Happy back here. >> Yeah. Um, so I'm here to ask for approval for the three-year calendars. I've been working with um, Superintendent Wagger and the teachers union to try to get three-year calendar. It's pretty much the same calendar that we've been doing over the last years with the exception, you'll notice that school is starting a little bit later uh, because of the Labor Day holiday. Um, so we we I think they did a pretty good job, the teachers union did a pretty good job holding it tight so that we're not in school um till July. Uh other than that, I think everything else is pretty much the same. We did work with Liz Biddle also just to make

027sure that all of our professional development aligned so that we can use all of that for instructional time. And I'm hoping going forward that we're going to continue to keep a couple of years um and we're not doing we're not waiting until school gets out to help our staff and our families with planning. >> Welcome. >> Any questions from the board? >> I have to say I am so proud that we are doing three years out. I mean it's been many days where we've just gone year to year to year to year. I think this is great for our families. I think this is great for our staff. I think it's great for everybody that we have a a clear path forward and yes, it's going to be tight because of the late Labor Day.

028Um, but I think everybody was working with the best interest in mind of not going well into June to make up for that late Labor Day. So, I appreciate everybody's work and coming together to make this happen. >> Yep. >> Just a quick question. Uh, when will this be available on the uh on the website or the or the portal for the parents? I'm hoping as soon as the board approves it that we can get it up on our on our website and information out there. >> Great to hear. Thank you. >> Yep. >> I didn't know if that one was mine. Okay. I didn't know if I knew there was a couple on there, so I didn't know if this one was mine. Um, so I'm coming to you today to ask for approval

029to attend the MSBO annual conference. I've been to this conference before when I was working on getting my HR specialist. So, I would like to continue to attend to get my pupil accounting uh specialist that I'm about halfway done with. Uh some of the the sessions that I would like to attend is the legislative and pupil accounting updates which are forever changing. GSRP reporting um which I would like to work a little closer with Lee on that. And then they also uh data quality just to make sure we're getting all of our uh data in properly and the TSDL rep um how it ties together. So, those are just some of the things I'm looking to um to work on. I'm [clears throat] here today to ask for the reinstatement of a student student one.

030Um he attended his reinstatement. The panel um voted 5 to zero to conditionally reinstate the student. Um I believe everybody has the details in their packet. And I don't know if do you want me to talk about the the conditions? >> Yes, sir. I'm sorry. Okay. >> My my only question is I know there was a run in with the uh school resource officer. Is the school resource officer fine with him being reinstated? Do they have input in this or No, >> since that time the student is involved in a youth diversion program with the police officer? >> No, I did read that. But is he fine with it though? Yeah, they have they've already talked okay relationship. >> I read the program. That doesn't mean he was necessarily >> Well, if he didn't, he

031wouldn't be in the program, right? [laughter] >> Thank you. >> Any questions? >> Okay. Thank you. And So I'm asking April. >> Yes. Um yes I am asking approval board approval to attend the MSBO conference. Uh it is required to maintain my certifications. I have a CFO as well as an administrative C. They're required for my position and this is how I maintain it by earning credit hours from these conferences. Well, I may able to may be able to make this as easy as possible and we can get through 7 8 9 10 together here. So, um, essentially, uh, the board did ask a while back that when we have this practice of people who are on rollover contracts, meaning as long as things are going well, they're having the things they're supposed to, they

032get rolled over for another set of two years. Um, the board had asked that we start bringing these forward just so that there's always kind of an eye to them. And I think it's a great way to do this. I think it's a absolutely transparent way of doing that. and that way we always know when they're going to roll over and we're taking care of them in a timely manner. So, tonight uh for uh our cabinet members and for um my uh administrative assistant and administrative assistants for human resources, the the number one and the number three positions, we are bringing those over just so the board can approve of whether they want that to roll over or if they do not want those contracts to roll over. So that's that's what you have in

033front of us tonight. Uh number 10 is a little different. So we have uh an administrative assistant for human resources who's in the second position, the the non-certified position. And because there were some things taking place where we weren't sure what the future was going to bring um with this particular individual, their contract looked a little different from other people's because it was for a short amount of time. Now that we feel comfortable, now that we know that we're our plan is to continue with this and our plan is to uh make it as equal to the other positions, we are actually bringing forward a new contract uh for that individual. And that contract simply um matches what the the benefits matches what the same pay the same items of the other positions in the

034HR department. So, uh, it's just making sure that we we have everything right and that person is getting the same things. So, >> okay, any questions? Any questions? Is there anyone in person like Hello. Um, I just wanted to come forward. Um, I'm sorry. I'm Lynette Snyder, 7287 Mayfair Street. I just wanted to come forward to um, let you know a little bit about the swim team. I came before advocating like keep the pool. Um, and we're very thankful and there's lots of things you can use it for. I just wanted to let you know that the varsity boys swim team made it to the um league conference. >> I I'm sorry I do have to interrupt you. Uh this is a general this part portion excuse me a public comment is exclusively for agenda

035items. >> Perfect. >> We'll have a moment that I just wanted I'm Thank you. So >> I'm excited for the good news though. Thank you. Is there anyone else? >> Yeah, I think we all need a little bearing with as we're forgetting to hit the button. We're not used to having this in front of us now. Yeah, because you certainly don't want to listen to me snipple between talking. So, we'll turn this over to uh Mr. Morris and he will continue with action items. >> Action items. Uh first um district calendar. It is recommended the board of education approve the district calendar for the 2026 2027 school year, 2027 2028 school year, and the 2028 2029 school year as presented. Is there a motion? Motion by Mr. Mr. Mardski, is there support? >> Support by

036Miss Moore. Uh, Mr. Mardski, >> yes. >> Mr. Morris says a yes. Miss Shufelt is excused. Mr. Westpole, >> yes. >> Miss Block, >> yes. >> There we go. Uh, and Miss Moore, >> yes. >> That carries 6. Uh, two, overnight conference request, MSBO policy 6550. 049>> Yes. >> Thank you. That carries 6. On to the superintendent report. >> Yeah, that was a marathon for you tonight, Corey. Uh thank you for going through that. Uh I I know uh Stephanie is handling other things tonight and that's why she can't be here, but maybe she also saw how much reading and she she knew she was handing it off to you tonight. So uh thank you for going through that. Um the few things that I want to talk about real quickly is first of all I want to just say that we do have the Polar Plunge taking place at Taylor High School tomorrow morning. Uh we'll be hosting this event as a benefit for Special Olympics. And I want to take a moment and thank everyone who is willing to go out

050there and take that plunge. Um, and there are many people who are going to jump into that 40 degree water. Yeah, I see Bill Pats out there. I'll be joining you, Bill, and I I was talking to a couple other principles who will be joining us, too. So, it's it's going to be on there. >> Yeah, I will. Yes, absolutely. Include that in here. No, you're good. So, first of all, I want to thank everybody who's doing that, but I also really want to thank everybody who donated money. all the people who sponsored those that are willing to uh plunge. So, it's not enough that you just go out there and take this jump for everybody. It also depends on everybody else who's willing to support with, you know, their finances to to put it

051forward for Special Olympics of Michigan. So, I'm really happy to say that the our community has raised over $10,000 through this process for Special Olympics. So, and this is a huge testament. I cannot thank enough uh Miss Tavern Radiger. She has led the charge. She has pushed the way. Um she has worked closely with our uh administrators in our special education department, Miss McCrae and Miss Smith. Um, but I'm gonna say Miss Tava Radiger really this was a project for her and this was something she felt strongly enough and I am so proud of the work uh that she has done. So I'm just tonight going to be trying to psych myself up for uh taking that cool plunge tomorrow. So uh looking forward to that. >> Oh yeah, thank you. I wrote it on

052here and Linda asked me to say it and then I forgot it. So it's at uh Taylor High School. It's going to be in the student parking lot and it officially begins at 8:15 uh tomorrow morning is when the first group will be taking that plunge. So, >> thank you. >> Uh I did want to next give the board an update uh with the CAB. So, they did have a meeting on Monday. Uh again, there was uh the situation that we have heard from the public and we've heard from committee members that we did not meet quum and that was the same case uh this week. So as we are at right now is that we are as a district we're going to go and solicit information from our stakeholders uh to see uh what

053kind of direction we should be taking going forward. Uh this is going to take place in kind of two ways. One is going to be a survey to parents and uh that would be sent out by the district and it would also be administering the myi survey to students this spring. So, in accordance with state law, the student survey is going to be posted on our website and it is going to be something that the parents can review once we put that posting out on the website and it is something that uh parents do legally have the right to opt out of having their students participate in that survey. So, uh we will make sure that everything is followed in accordance with state law for for that needs. But we really were looking at it

054as we need to get more input, more feedback. Uh and essentially we will not be having any CAB meetings until we are able to gather more feedback and gather this data uh as we go forward. So what we will be proceeding with however is making sure that we are meeting our statemandated obligations for lessons on HIV. those are required uh regardless of the CAB process, regardless of if we wanted to teach other things in that in sex education. Um we are required to do these lessons on HIV and we have started the process of curriculum viewings. I know we just had one before the board meeting today. Uh there is a second material viewing that is going to be on Thursday uh March 12th from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. And some of the feedback we

055received at today's curriculum viewing is that they would like to see us have another one on there. So we are going to look at that and we are going to see if we can find another opportunity for uh parents to have that viewing before we wrap up this process of uh making sure we're set for those HIV lessons. uh that will be is basically to be announced since we just started talking about it roughly an hour ago. So, um we also let people know at that curriculum viewing that if they wanted a deeper look, we're going to make sure that each building has a binder of the appropriate lesson for the HIV lessons. So, that would be, you know, our elementary schools will have the binder for the fifth grade lessons, our middle schools for

056the seventh, and then the high school for the 10th. and that if parents are not able to make it to any of these scheduled ones that we're having, they can reach out to the building, to the secretary, to the principal, and they can arrange to look at those materials or like I said, if they're at these viewings, they just don't have enough time, that's there for them as a resource, too, to to be able to look at. So, those are kind of the updates uh in terms of CAB at this point. The final thoughts I wanted to talk about today um is just something that I've been reflecting on uh since last week. And what really got me thinking about this is a young man that has come to enroll with us. Um but this

057young man has never been inside of a formal public school before. It's something that happens from time to time. This isn't like it's totally unheard of, but this one was unique because I don't think I've ever seen that happen where it's somebody who's of high school age. Uh so it was something extremely unique to to the school district. So knowing that this was going to be something that was more of a delicate situation, we had a team meet with the family and talk about what's best, find out what we can do to provide the best supports for this student. And I have to say, I wasn't personally at the meeting, but when I was brought up to speed and and people were filling me in on it, I think this meeting revealed some of the

058most amazing examples of resilience that I have ever heard and stories of what this student has done on their own basically to be prepared for this moment, to be able to come into school and to feel comfortable. I was blown away. It was nothing short of phenomenal. what I had heard from this meeting and our team has really dedicated themselves with working with this family and developing a plan that is going to be best to move forward. Uh so it made me proud of the team and the people we have in place that we're able to meet the needs of such a unique uh situation. What has really struck me though is that this really is what drove us into the field of education. It really is about taking that time and doing what is

059best for any student who comes through our doors, any student who comes into our hallways and does those things. It is what our teachers do. It's what our support staff does. It's what our bus drivers do. It's everybody from top to bottom. We are here because we are here to serve kids and provide them exactly what they need. And what I see though is that more and more this polarization we see in society is starting to creep into the educational field. And it worries me because it really is about providing for kids. And I think that's something we all agree on. I don't think that's something that is up for debate. We really want to be able to do what is best for each and every student. And we know that every student, they don't

060learn the same way. We know that they're not coming from the same supports. We know they're not coming from the same background. And so, we know we have to meet these challenges because every student's situation is unique. And it's our responsibility to go through and find what works and find what's best. And I think this was one of those moments that I reflected and said, we're doing this right. we we are on the right path if we're able to meet this challenge and take this on. And so I'm encouraging everyone out there that it's about students. It's not about who's right. It's not about who's wrong. It's not those things. It's about providing for each and every student every single day. And so as I reflect, myself included in all this, I want to make

061sure that we are always dedicated. Uh, and I know Jimmy Cassin likes to say the the phrase, it's not just words on the wall, like we have to walk the walk. And I want to just make sure that when we come here to the Taylor School District, we are absolutely dedicated to the to the phrase that we have adopted that we are going to educate with purpose, we're going to engage with passion, and we are going to absolutely empower the future. And I am proud of the work that happens uh in this district every single day. So, thank you. >> I have a question about the HIV curriculum. How can the board view it? Can we get a copy of that just sent to us or So, I don't know that we can send it

062because it is copyrighted material, but I know that we have the copies here in the building and we can figure out a way for you to view it. Absolutely. Yes. Okay. Thank you. But we may have issues with the transmission piece because of the copyright. Am I saying that right, Miss Graham? >> Okay. Thank you. >> Items. >> No item. Yeah. >> Items for next agenda and then >> leave it to me. Okay. >> Yeah. Items scheduled for next agenda. Good news and student representatives. General public comment. at this portion of the meeting can come up and talk about anything. >> Is anybody in person? Oh >> yeah, I think we're getting the good news update on the swim team in here. Just >> Yep. [laughter] Got to give me a minute though because I

063forgot to read last time. Take a week off and what happens? Welcome to Taylor School District regularly scheduled committee of the whole meeting. If questions arise, Superintendent Wagger or his designate will work to provide answers in a timely manner. Please note that the comments made by individual board members do not necessarily reflect the position of the board of education. This portion Oh, no. This meeting is held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act and is being video recorded. Thank you. >> Okay. I'm Lynette Snyder again. Uh 7287 Mayfair Street. I just wanted to let you know um big advocate for the pool and keeping the pool. um our um swim team um

065every single one of them made it through prelims at the down river league meet and they made it to finals and all of them are going to the smizzle championship on Saturday. So I just wanted to say like thank you. Um and then also I had a note from one of the parents and and she just said we love our coach and the swim team. I know I'm so so grateful. He works so hard and provides the opportunity for our boys to swim. Nolan has gained so much from this team encouragement um leadership and he would have never had that opportunity without the pool and the coach. So I just wanted to share that with you. She has a senior so she was I think um just sharing but I just wanted to say like

066it's very it's a very encouragement encouraging team and um and to share you the good share the good news about the swim team. So, thank you. And then also, I wanted to say um thank you for um the gift um and um working together with Ella's family to have her graduate. Um I'm the booster board president of the music program, which she was very involved in, and um we got that picture that you guys did, and I just am very thankful to you. Um, and then I also wanted to say thank you um about the career center. Both of my kids have um accessed the career center and um my daughter is a uh did the student cadet program and she is at CMU now. Um she's on the president's list at CMU and wants

067to be a teacher. So, I am just thankful for and she didn't know what she wanted to do and I'm thankful for the career center. And then my son um is now in the career center with construction looking into um opportunities there uh for plumbing, electrician. He's very interested in all that. He's in Skills USA. We wouldn't have that opportunity without that. And I just think that's an amazing uh thing. And I just wanted to share thank yous because I know you hear a lot of stuff. Um, but I want to share some of the good things too as well. So, thank you. >> I do want to say one thing real quick. Um, so, uh, she went through the teacher cadet program. >> Yes. >> So, do remind her that we do give those

068teacher cadet students a certificate that says they automatically get an interview if they go and be get that teaching degree with the Taylor School District. and she has it and she's very thankful for that and um to be honest like you would she talks a lot about her teachers and the good things about her teachers and we have amazing teachers in Taylor so she wants to come back so >> and Pat correct me if I'm wrong that just was in the TA that we did with that that they voted through tonight was a automatic guarantee for >> it's an amazing program >> for those interviews so >> thank you Hello, Bethany Pavey, 6036 Mayfair Street. I just had a quick question. Um, I know you clarified about the CAB, kind of taking a break until

069we get survey results. Will the process be the same for the parents to apply when we figure out if the Cab will be needed or will we change the process because it didn't work so well this time or will it >> don't think I have that answer yet today. >> So, but I just want to be totally honest and truthful. Yes, >> totally. Okay. Thank you. Courtney Prout 9846 Katherine. Um I just wanted to address really quickly the statement that keeps getting repeated about the CM not meeting quorum. Um it's not a quorum issue and that's what's so frustrating is that it is about the membership requirements. Um there are parents showing up. We are all there. The issue is that the district can't fulfill their side that the teachers aren't showing up. The students

070aren't showing up. Um so before we even talk about quorum, there has to be membership requirements met. So this is what's so frustrating to me is that that keeps getting brought up as if we have too many members. And it could be true. We may have too many members on the CM, but we don't have the required membership roles even coming in the first place to begin talking about Gorum. So I just want to clarify that. I think it's very frustrating that that keeps getting brought up because it's not the issue right now. The issue is that we can't get the right members to be there to actually have anything other than a discussion. Um, and then I also want to bring up too that at the last meeting, and I know that it's shut

071down for now, but it was very uncalled for the way some of the parents were talked to and treated um by some of the Taylor School District staff um that weren't even on the board. Um, and I'm not going to mention any names, but there were some staff members there that were consistently talking about um how we were asking questions. The whole point of the last meeting was to go over bylaws that, mind you, we brought home on day one. um and our bylaws we went through when we sat together and we looked at all of these things as a group and then we came back on the third time and they were all different. Um Mr. Madarkski was there so he probably can attest to it as well. Those bylaws did not match and

072that is very frustrating to a lot of us. We were asking lots of questions as to where these bylaws came from because they were not our bylaws. They weren't what we were going through. We were actually having very productive first two meetings speaking about the bylaws and what we thought and we come back the third meeting and it's completely different. Um, so our clergy member as an example, like I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even come back at all because he was treated very unfairly. Um, just just asking questions. Another parent was, you know, they were yelling back and forth between I mean, not yelling, but there was some loud talking between the two of them. Like there's just a lot going on that didn't make it wasn't very professional. And there were people

073in the room from the Taylor School District that could have um helped that be more professional and that was not working. So, I just want to make that clear that if it is something that moves forward when we do get a CAB back up and going that there need something that's going to hold the people that are there accountable from the district's end. Thank you. >> Hi, Stephanie O'Donnell 23417 HG. Um, we were talking about the CAB. I'm curious since there isn't one up and going right now. Is sex and reproduction still allowed in health class to be taught. >> I guess I need more specific information than that. I can talk to you on the side, give you a call because I I need more information than >> I'm under the impression that with

074CB that sex ed and reproduction. I mean, I understand biology, chromosomes, things along them lines are one thing, but when you actually go into talking about the act and male and female parts and how they interact, would that be that I would consider that sex ed and reproduction and until the CB is up and going that that should not occur in a in a health class? >> Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I'll have to look because again, I'm not certified in health, so I don't know exactly all the state standards off the top of my head. I' I'd have to review >> and I don't I'm not prepared to answer that tonight. >> Okay. Um >> but I can absolutely look into it. >> It would probably be a good idea that it's done

075soon not to tell you what to do. How because I signed the permission slip last month and even though I was happy with what the teacher explained and what was being taught, I was not aware that the CAB wasn't up and going yet. And he actually had an assignment yesterday um called reproduction Sorry. What school does your uh student or child attend? >> The high school. Okay. Thank you. >> What I'd like to do with this because this has been ongoing for quite some time with the standards. We did have somebody from Wayne Reese attend um actually last few meetings and even she was a little confused but she seemed to be hedging towards the fact that we need to maybe not teach certain things without the CF board being in place. That's how I

076I took that and what I would like to see and hopefully the board will support me is that we have a board attorney. You could look at this, give us a summary of the law in writing and let us know what is allowed and what is not because the parents are essentially alleging through various processes that we are somehow violating the state law. Well, we have an attorney. It'd be nice if you would inform us in writing what the state law is. Educate us on this so we know first what the law is. We've been waiting a year. He still haven't told us what the law is. And then two is what we're teaching in violation of the law or not? But I I do think the foundation should be the attorney in writing giving

077us an opinion what this says. Would you like to comment on that? Put something in writing school districts. I can do that. I have not been asked what the law says last year. So I don't know what you're referring to. Happy to provide information. I haven't been asked to provide anything. >> Well, it's just been an ongoing thing for a year. I'm not I was under the impression that some of this was shared with you. You're right. I didn't contact you directly. So, in general, if we do have a question and I should just contact your office directly. >> That's up to the board and how you want to contact me. I mean, I I've been asked various things regarding requests that have come forward and what the requirements are, I guess, are for the

078sex advisory board, but I put together a presentation, written opinion to the board, which I can absolutely do for the next meeting. >> I think it'd be really good if we could get that because that would probably end a lot of the speculation. >> I guess it's it's not fair to say I have I have been asked questions over time, but I haven't been asked to put together. >> You're looking for like in layman's terms what the law says and so on and that and for all of us to have just is >> Yeah. Yeah. I just subject the attorney to put it more what we're asking for. >> Yeah. Essentially a legal opinion by the attorney. Not an opinion. You're right. Just have a legal summary, right? It would even have to be into

079close session. Just say, "Hey, there's a state law, public act, whatever. This is what it says. This is what it really means in real life. And this is what's allowed and what's not allowed." So, just kind of like anything else. Like, >> we we'll officially um request that then, John. >> Yeah. put something together layman's terms for all of us so that we know moving forward >> and that way if parents have a question we can answer it because it does concern me when people say hey we think you're breaking state law and I don't even know what the state law is so that's kind of a problem you know what I'm saying that that's that's where I'm coming from that just tell us what the law is so we know >> yeah which classes

080can be taught where because health class anatomy class biology class any of those can be used as a loophole technically for reproduction and some of it is necessary Yeah, >> the health class has specific state guidelines. They're they're [snorts] um they've called them glicks, objectives over the years, they've changed, but it tells you exactly which things that class is supposed to [clears throat] teach. Um correct. So, it's as simple as looking at the state website, but certainly we'll look in to see what what's on the >> Yeah, I just don't know it off the top of my head. That's why >> I find out once you do >> Yeah, I will reach out. Absolutely. >> Okay. Because I filled out a paper last time and nobody ever reached out. >> Okay. Gladly. I will absolutely

081do that. >> Thank you. >> Yep. >> Okay. Anyone else? >> Anybody online? >> Nobody. You're unmuted. >> Okay. >> Yep. Go ahead. We're not going to see a picture or anything. >> Sorry. >> Well, good evening. My name is Kathy Henderson and I am a program instructor for Michigan State University Extension4 and I just wanted to let you know about the um grant that we received from the office of highway safety planning for the state of Michigan to share seat belt safety education for youngsters in middle school and high school. The programming is free. We is fully funded by the state of Michigan and we come out we have lessons, activities and um they have make and take projects and it's for sixth uh sixth uh through 12th grade. We have goggles assimilate in

082paired driving. We have um so many other activities that the youngsters and we've been through so many uh schools here in Wayne County. That's where we assigned to Wayne County because it has the highest usage of cell phones while driving and the lowest usage of seat belt. So, we've been asked to get out and get that information out and I'm just um asking for your support in helping us get this information to the youngsters in Taylor. >> Thank you. Thank you. That's it. Okay. All right. Board member comments. >> Well, since my name was brought up, I will just say I have gone to the last couple SA meetings and that does stand for the sex advisory board because I think people are looking around like what does that even mean? And you're right, we

083haven't had an they did not have an official meeting. It was more of a get together because there was no quorum. Um and yeah, so not this month but the previous month there was a good group of folk that showed up. They seem very interested, passionate. So I do hope it continues on. But the specific question about the bylaws, yeah, I did want to bring that up because when I was at the last meeting that I watched, they did come up with a certain set of bylaw recommendations and then they had the meeting this month and they just disappeared and I was super confused cuz I didn't remember everything, but I remembered certain things that people brought up. And yeah, I can understand why people who attended that meeting were a bit put off, a

084bit angry because I would have been too if I had spent three hours back in February, no, January, working on bylaw suggestions and then they just disappeared. I'm assuming it's just a clerical error or mistake or something, but yeah. So maybe pausing the CB for a little bit is not a bad idea. And then when we do reconstitute, I think we as a board need to really think through the numbers, the bylaws, a meeting schedule and and things like that because you are asking people maybe not with the experience to run meetings, no parliamentary procedure, know the open meetings act and and they didn't. So I think at the very least when we reconstitute the CAB, we need to pick a finite number of people with a with a quorum that can be met. And

085we also should have an orientation session because I think if we had an orientation session kind of how to do things, probably this last meeting wouldn't have gone down the way it did. But yeah, I apologize to the parents who were there. I understand why you were mad. I would have been mad, too. But I think it was just more that I know this wasn't training orientation how to do these sorts of things. I was not treated rudely.
