Yes Miss Kar thank you for sharing with us that you use the high scope curriculum. I was a field consultant for high scope for about ten years and it's the curriculum is fabulous. I'm so glad that we're using it here in Wyandotte. Thank you. It is we're very proud. Thank you. Thank you. Anyone else? I just want to as an early childhood educator myself I thank you all for all the work you do every single day to get these kids ready for life so thank you so much. Any other comments? Thank you staff for coming in for bringing your lovely assistance. We loved the parade. It
was so fun. So it is really hard work being up in front of the board and if you guys wanted to sneak out there is an ice cream store like right outside the doors. It's pretty hot out today so I think they earned it. Absolutely. And I want to thank my parents for taking the time to come out and support us as well. Yes thank you so much. We know you have bad time so please feel free to dismiss at this time and we'll carry on with the rest of our business. We'll give you a minute to disperse. Thank you guys. Thank you. That's so cute. It's not every day you get a parade. I know right? I want to take a picture of that. It was one of my kids. Oh really? Cutie. They
try. That was the best part of my day. I know. So cuties. Best part of my day. Super cuties. All right next up I'd like to invite Mr. Vassi principal of Washington Elementary School who is going to share with you a little bit about a new approach that we took this spring and they're gonna give you an update on how that went. Good evening. Thank you so much for having us here this evening. I actually have a couple of staff members who are going to be presenting for you today. We have Mrs. Hannah Thompson who's gonna be coming up. She's our kindergarten teacher and Mrs. Nicole Riopel who is our literacy coach and pending your approval tonight. The future principal at Washington Elementary. Thank you. Thank you Kristen. Hi everybody. Good evening. Thank you for
having us tonight. We're super excited to talk to you about this. So back in March we did a reinvention of an old idea that's been around. Portfolio conferences, celebrations of learning. It's happened and wind up before but we decided to breathe some new life into it and look at our conferences a little bit different. This has been a passion project for Hannah probably since I've worked at Washington. She's had a folder that she's kept and every time she just puts a little little information in there a little bit more a little bit more and then this year we were actually going over our my KIPP data and we were going over the activities that we were going to be doing in our building and it came up to kind of find a way to include
parents and students more at conferences and I heard Hannah go that's that's my idea and so after that the meeting I went to Hannah and I said let's do this like I'll reach out to the parties that be and let's make your passion come to life and I'm really proud of Hannah because you know we talked about teachers being leaders and leader leading from where they're standing like not necessarily in a leadership role but just out of their classroom and this is an example of Hannah doing that she took this on and really made this her own so I'm gonna turn it over to Hannah. We did have a presentation, oh there it is. So yes like Nicole said this was in lieu of our traditional winter parent-teacher conferences that we do so if you
go to the next slide. So from 1230 to 3 we had traditional parent-teacher conferences offered these were available to any parent who wanted them it was either by parent schedule or if the teacher had concerns she could also they could also reach out to the parent and a big point that we made was that anybody who wanted a conference had to have a conference so if that time didn't work just like we always do we would make alternate times work before school after school phone conference whatever they needed. Then from four to six was when we switched to the celebration of learning which was done in an open house style. Next slide. So as Mrs. Riepel pointed out the student portfolios was the big part of it so it was that student led conference so
each of the classes it looked a little bit different from kindergarten to fifth this is an example of my room here so my kindergartners had their reading group book that they were working on a writing sample math math sample they did their own little behavior self-assessment we had some crafts in the hallway and they came in and I told them it was their show and they walked their parents to their desk and ran it and all the teachers were available for questions but the kids really were so proud of just being able to talk about themselves and have the spotlight on them so it was really cute. Next slide. So the scavenger hunt this was kind of like a big incentive for coming in so it gave parents and families the opportunity to explore the
school so as they entered the building they received their scavenger hunt which included specials classrooms their individual classroom we had math and reading materials available our PBIS our WOW which is our parent organization the guidance center came and then we had fifth graders selling Smentzels Miss Ripell, Miss Rowell had curriculum information for parents so they kind of walked them through we had curriculum books out and then we had a free library and other take-home materials for them so sorry back again so for completing the scavenger hunt we had prizes because we know little kids need an incentive they love those prizes so if they turned in their complete scavenger hunt they received a prize and then just for coming to the event they also received five raffle tickets and we had raffle baskets that was
all teacher and staff donations we had principal for half a day holy cow gift card lunch with Mrs. Evenoff just kind of that variety of prizes for them so they got to get those five raffle tickets for free. So because this was something that we were trying we wanted to make sure that we after the event we reached out to all of the parents and the staff and we got two separate surveys so this is just a couple of the questions that we asked the parents this one is an overall just what your thoughts of the the event were you can see that most be about a little over 60% rated it as a four or five next slide please this one talked about the different things that were provided so the information provided the
teacher availability and the student project quality so we wanted to see what their thoughts were about that and you can see we have a lot of greens there next slide and then this was about the communication so because it was a change we wanted to make sure that parents understood that we weren't saying that they couldn't conference and that was the big thing we wanted to hit home didn't matter where your kid was as far as achievement if you wanted a conference we wanted to make sure that that we were available to have those so that was just there and then a couple things I didn't include but one of the biggest negative comments which I agree with is we were not expecting the turnout that we got it was actually really cool to see
how busy our halls were and how alive they were with just talk of learning and the things going on so definitely next year we're going to have to spread out I happened to be in the hallway that was really hot and crowded and I agree 100% and then the other thing is really figuring out a way to communicate to parents because we did get some background or some feedback saying they would have to take off for that 12 to 3 spot that didn't work in their time so we missed the mark there we have to again really reiterate to parents that we don't expect you to take time off of work we will be available if it needs to be at night so just thinking of different ways to communicate from there and then those
are just some if you go back but that those were just some comments from the teachers they really enjoyed the event One comment that really hit home is sometimes conferences for parents I think feel maybe sometimes judgy and they're worried about coming because they don't want to get the feedback that they're waiting for and it just took that away it was truly a feeling of joy and excitement about learning and I think it was very inclusive and welcomed all families to come to the table to just really celebrate what their kids were learning so yeah overall we sent out the staff survey and we had a hundred percent say that they would enjoy doing this again in the future they felt like it was just a very successful and it just kind of made it
feel more homey and everyone was welcome because the only other time that we really have everybody in the building like that is back to school and people are still nervous they don't know who their teacher is they might be new to the school and so this just gave them that opportunity where they're comfortable it is their school and they were running around showing their parents everything and just really taking ownership and then the next slide is just some pictures so we had our free library we also had some food trucks come that would be another thing that we would probably try to do more of next year is have more food options for the families and then the curriculum information we had a photo booth set up with the Washington background and some homemade props
and then the Guidance Center was there and PBIS and all of our tables that had parent information had to make multiple copies throughout the night they were running back to the copy machine because the parents wanted what they were giving them miss Johnson said that at the PBIS table they were taking like examples that she had of behavior charts for at home and ideas for how to talk with kids about certain things so she was really pleased with how much the parents enjoyed that information so and that is it thank you for letting us share it was a success we look forward to doing it in the future thank you board members questions or comments from Mrs. Rappell or Mrs. Thompson I have a quick question can you tell me I saw that on some
of the responses there were 57 responses and then 58 on another roughly how many families or parents came to the event do you know so yeah the response on the survey I think we got right around 58 or 59 some of the responses were optional the serve the scavenger hunt we had 186 turned in so at least 186 students there were some that you know had to run in and out so they didn't actually do the scavenger hunt part of it we had attempted at first to kind of collect more sign-in information but it was overwhelmingly crowded so which is a great problem to have but yeah we had 186 scavenger hunts turned in yeah that's really good any other questions or comments thank you for coming and I appreciated the thing I was just
something that we're talking about doing yeah so we approved this as a pilot for this year and so I think it started to catch wind a little bit with the other elementary staffs and so the principals next year will discuss it for a district-wide approach and I told all the other teachers I am happy to share everything with them I have folders and folders thank you Hannah I do know adults like ice cream too so I don't know if people are sticking around or heading out but when that is time is I think ice creams open till 9 or 10 they're always open till 9 yeah you go yep all right moving on to a part C hearing of the public wind up public schools Board of Education welcomes public discourse now is the portion
