002accept this evening's agenda as presented second that was moved by Miss Thomas and second by Miss Daniels can I get roll call please miss Thomas yes Mrs Daniels yes but um before we move forward on I also just notice that we don't have um our pledge alleges a moment of silence on tonight's agenda I this is a different version that's being printed out cuz it looks different it's cuz I have both 1.3 and then 1.4 which is the adoption of the agenda what I'm making I think they were printed the wrong version was printed are you printing a different version or I'm printing this is I think this is the simplified version of this um so I what we have that's posted to the public is has all 1.1 1.2 1.3 now it was printed
003doesn't have that 1.3 on it and there's no motion on this one to so we're going to pause for a moment and we're going to get um the correct version or more detailed version of our agenda that will have all of the needed um sections on it thank you everyone for your patience for motion that's on the table how do we um we could um vote to resend the to be a motion to fin the yeah e this all right so we Phil if you can help me we were yes we are 1.2 1.2 uh actually 1.3 adoption of the agenda we had a motion on the table yes so it was a motion to uh adopt the amended agenda so we need a motion to just adopt the agenda okay we don't need to
004resend that Mo that motion that was on the table um I mean I would just for for clarity I would just say we can we can take a new roll call on a motion to adopt the agenda okay do so can I get a motion to adopt this evening's agenda so can I get a second all right so now can I get a roll call yes M Daniels yes Miss Morrison yes Miss Cox yes Miss Thomas yes Miss King yes all right at this time I would like to ask everyone to take a moment of Silent reflection and then I would like us to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance which will be readed by vice president Morrison i' to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it
005stands one nation under God indivisible with libery and justice for all thank you can I get an approval of a motion to approve the minutes from the February 10th 2024 board retreat February 12th special board meeting and the February 20th 2024 regular board meeting as presented second that was moved by Miss Daniels and second by Miss Cox can I get roll call please yes Mrs Daniels yes Miss Cox yes Miss Morrison yes Miss Thomas yes Miss King yes at this time we will have the board president's report the Garfield height City Schools reminds the commun community that Tuesday March 19th is election day and encourages everyone to exercise their right to vote polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. one of the greatest days in the history of Garfield Heights took place this
006past Friday morning with members of the Cleveland Browns including co-owner JW Johnson representing the Haslam group and head coach Kevin stefans stefansky attended a remarkable ceremony to ground break to break ground on a state-of-the-art turf field at the high school we are extremely grateful to the Cleveland Browns and their owners for making this significant ific donation and for changing the Horizon of our student athletes and Community for the Next Generation this project will include the installation of fully synthetic turf turf by forever lawn a company who specializes in Innovative approaches to turf fields with Superior standards and natural Aesthetics this marks the 15th field surface provided to the Ohio schools and communities by the Browns courtesy of the Haslam and Johnson families as well as Browns days back since the team's long long-term field initiative
007launched eight years ago in May 2016 Garfield height City Schools is honored to be in this Exclusive Company of recipients for a donation of this magnitude during the ceremony itself Mr Johnson Co owner of the Browns even remarked that this was the very best groundbreaking ceremony he's attended because of the number of students staff and Community participants I congratulate Dr Reynolds on this accomplishment and thank Mr Townsen and Mrs Ward for helping organize the students Gina Wilson for fostering such a powerful relationship with the Browns Mr Pope for ramping up the spirit with the marching band and everyone else who helped to make Friday's groundbreaking ceremony so memorable for the entire Garfield height City School Community we look forward to the ribbon cutting ceremony upon the Project's completion next fall thank you and go Bulldogs
008next we will move into committee reports are there any committee reports M president Miss Thomas I have two reports yes ma'am um I have a rather long CDCC um board report of the way our meetings um were held um we hosted student and parent information night on January 18 we hosted Career Tech week February 8 I mean February 5th through 9th during that week we celebrated the 100% club which is our students with perfect attendance and no tardies we had bring your parent to school school day for the juniors we had 10th grade high school visits favorite team apparel Spirit day and Black History Month trivia highlighting pioneers and innovators on March 7th we hosted a job fair our spring break at cbcc will be the week of March 25th um our Garfield height students
009visited Magna magnet for an amazing field trip on March 20th our board president Jackie art from North Royalton will be receiving an award for from osba um this year in update we're only taking one section of Cosmetology students as our Renovations will begin and one um classroom will not be able to be used um we received our quarterly bullying and harassment report there were three incidents in quarter 1 so far we received our high school retention report um Auto Service had the highest withdrawal percentage um we do believe that that was due to an instructor change change um our district Garo Heights um had 35% of the total withdrawals in the district with 43 students not returning I plan to get some more information on this data overall we found that 36% of the students
010at cbcc who did not return return did not return because they either didn't like the program or it wasn't what they expected 29% of our total withdrawals were due to attendance or grow grades we got a presentation on our 5-year technology plan we received an update on our academic plan and our STNA program we learned about all the grants that we receive um that help support our academics um we hired a new teachers Aid in the health careers program in 2025 we'll be rolling out a new Transportation clusters program we purchased new equipment for auto services health careers and Tower technology in 2026 we'll be adding more staff for our new parks and environment resources program our construction cluster of programs um will be growing in 2026 as well our education programs are our adult
011education programs are soaring um we have an STNA and GED diploma program that is doing really good for our adult education um out of the 50 adults that enrolled in the last four years um 45 of them did not begin with the GED or diploma and received it at the end of their program um we also discussed the benefits to cbcc with um shared resources between our high school and our adult education programs we also began offering the firefighter and EMT certificate again in partnership with Stark State um our January student of the month was cyle Woods he is a power equipment student he has always been fascinated by engines he loves Hands-On learning and I'm just going to read his quote since my report was a little long today um his quote was my
012advice to Future students is to really think about your options because there are endless opportunities at cbcc you could go blind into a program not knowing anything about the field and leave the program being an expert on the basics of the field cbcc has opened me up to more career opportunities than I ever could have imagined our February student of the month was Kiara Harper she is a student in our education professions program her favorite part of the program thus far has been her field experience at Glendale School in Beford and her quote was never compare yourself or your journey to that of others your journey is completely different from the person sitting next to you in class so never compare yourself or your journey it won't do you any good and that concludes my
013cbcc report um for the policy committee I just wanted to share an update that we are working on setting the date to begin reviewing all of our policies and that concludes my report any questions for Miss Thomas on either of her reports Madam president M just have that question do cbcc stream their board meetings at all we don't thank you I have a quick question not sure if you specifically would know the answer but why are why is cbcc partnering with Stark State as opposed to Tri C they're born out of County for the EMT program yes I believe it had to do with the offerings of the um certificate okay and because we did use Tri before and the partnership ended because they no longer offered it um so one of our new instructors
014had connections with start State and they did offer their certification so majority of the certification will be done on our campus at cbcc but the certification part of it has to be done that start where the technology and equipment is okay just ask because my daughter just did both the em and paramedic certification through tric yeah I'll get you more information but there was a reason why we couldn't go through Tri for that with cbcc I was just wonder why we keep it in thank you any other questions for Miss Thomas any other reports Madam president miss C I have uh the community and family engag report two items one um we had a Civic event on March 15 at Garfield height high school the event aimed to Foster Community involvement and collaboration highlighting the
015importance of civic responsibility among our students and community members we were delighted to have uh a great turnout with uh some of our Council people our council president and some other um uh our Senator and a couple other people and a couple of our board members were also in attendance um and the other update is our successful we had a successful fatherdaughter dance that occurred on Friday March 15th we had had 250 tickets sold Friday um sorry it was this Friday that just passed upcoming events are March 19th and March 20th at 10:00 a.m. and it's called the emotionally fit at the board office and that will highlight the collaboration between family engagement and seel and that concludes my report thank you any questions for Miss C any other um reports any other um reports
016Madam president I have two reports yes ma my Wellness liaison report is uh study tables have concluded for winter sports and just started for our Spring sport athletes male Macklin a freshman wrestler qualified for the ohsa a state wrestling tournament in boys basketball we finished the season 25-2 won the lake Eerie League a division one District championship and advaned to the Regional Championship game girls basketball finish the season with 12 wins which is the most the school has won in over a decade we have had our first boys volleyball scrimmage in school history which was a straight set victory over Cleveland Heights uh spring sports are ready to kick off as we have scrimmages in both baseball and softball this week and have our first track and field meet the year of the year coming
017up after spring break music express competition season is over um some of the awards they won desire Goodwin won two best female soloists outstanding performers were dark tanion Perry with two desire good one Goodwin and Valerie Ortiz won too um they ended up in fifth the fifth place runnerup in Twinsburg second runner up in the division in Madina third place in the division and third place overall in North Royalton runner up in the division in Solen and third place at Walsh we also won the spirit of show choir award which is huge the other um that's voted on by the other C competitors uh People's Choice Award and best set that concludes my Wellness liaison report and now I have a finance committee report um wanted to let you know that we are finishing up
018our projects with our eser funds all the renovations at the high school and the middle school that were done were eser funds we will be using the rest of the Esser funds for windows at the Middle School this summer and a chiller at Maple Leaf and then our last big project is while the Browns were partnering with us to do the field we are putting the last of our eser funds into the track that's going to go around the field and so our field should be done by the Browns in August and we should have that track completed by November and that concludes my report thank you any questions for Miss Morrison I have a quick question is the boys volleyball season in the spring they had because you said they had a scrimmage are
019they because it's not a team it's more of like inner murals yeah they're doing it to start out in the spring to see how well it goes okay thank you any other question questions any other reports Madam president miss Daniels I have a legislative committee report yes M legislative committee met on today um our old business that we discussed was the Civic engagement event in which we partnered with um family engagement to um to um coordinate with the high school um we had had Senator um Kent Smith we had State School Board representative Tom Jackson State Representative Darnell Brewer mayor ma Matt Bert we also had um we had council president Avery Johnson council member Stacy ker all in attendance and we had the opportunity to um discuss with our students um the importance of
020Civic engagement the the importance of voting and then we were able to do some Q&A with our students um regarding their concerns um legislatively um the other item on a business um that we had was we did our legislative updates and the only thing that we have on the legislative update right now is the c Capital Appropriations bill um and that is House Bill 2 and House Bill 27 um although these Capital this Capital appro appropriation Bill does not have a huge impact on the school district in particular but there are some items that are very impactful to the city um as a whole so that is something that we just need to um watch out for um also the osba state legislative conference is on April 24th in Columbus Ohio and that's an opportunity
021for school board members to engage with their state legislators and the governor um and that oh we also decided that we were going to move to quarterly meetings unless there were any pressing items um that we need to convene relative to legislation that was would impact the school district and that concludes my report thank you any questions for Miss Daniels and her committee report all right and I had a legislative liaison report but both Miss Danel and Miss Cox talked about um everything I was going to talk about in my report so I will um skip my report to this evening are there any other reports all right if not we're going to move into presentations and I'll turn it over to Dr renolds thank you madam president tonight we have the honor hearing an
022update from our pupil Services Department led by Dr uh dpri he'll update you on all of the the many things that are going on within this department board I'm going to understand here so the entire boy can see me um tonight we are talking about the people Services Program department and some of the things that we do but a little bit later a couple of hours from that later we're going to highlight a couple of things that the department does that we're very proud of these are some of the responsibilities uh of the triple Services Department some things you've heard of some things you probably have not but uh forever we've been responsible for uh all of the things that you see on the uh on the screen in front of you for Safety and
023Security these are some of the things that we do every year we're really pleased with this one every year for about 7 Paul seven years ago when we started that um probably at least we have a full court session held for the eighth graders at the middle school every year judge BFF two BFFs uh sheriff's deputy and the eighth graders are presented with typically two cases that are real when someone comes to the building to face possible sentencing nobody dangerous nobody who might be uh a killer or rapist but these are people who have minor offenses and right in the middle school the judge will say how do you plead I'm going to vacate your case and they uh the kids really get a lot out of that these things here from here on down
024are required by law and we do these every year this uh some of you may remember years ago we used to do like a school a day but now what we do for evacuations is we do multiple schools at the same time just in case there's an emergency like a toxic spill a hostage situation so all the schools now are used to walking because when we first started doing this we had buses the buses would pick the kids up and take them take them back so now everybody walks these were mentioned by uh a couple of the board members for some of the things that we have had this year that are major events again this is something that we do every year uh spearheaded by Mrs Wilson and we have um father's walk coming
025up on the March dadness that's our next let See kindergarten registration was last Thursday night and I have a picture to show you in a minute boy will be disappointed today Mr Felder and I went to Colt there was supposed to be three kids coming his father was unfed up with these kids they need to talk to somebody in the courtroom it was it was all set the magistrate Hannah was ready for us Mr Felder what happened we got a noow um parent didn't notify us beforehand we had to call several times um at the time when we were supposed to be meeting before the parent answered and he said that he forgot and that the kids were somewhere else they weren't in uh in Garfield and Mr can you tell the board how has
026this program been working in general since we started with the diversion program is it's been going very well um the the parents especially I think are very excited and appreciative of a program like this um I think that it's a good alternative I think they feel it's a good alternative opposed to what they're used to you know um showing up to the school having the meetings and things like that I think it's just a different look that some parents feel like um their kids are responsive to and I know um from the sessions a lot of times the kids end up giving us information that the parents and nobody else had gotten originally what we've been finding in this setting so it's been interesting it's been good it's been going with last school year the
027board may remember the three uh individuals in the court that we worked with came here and spoke to the board uh judge Mastro judge Deano and magistrate Hannah and um the the kids are interesting with some of the things that they say in court and many times Mr Felder gets frustrated because we have kids who are ready to go but for some reason they think nope they're trying to trick me into going to juen our court Mr Feld is that accurate they think that just a yeah uh it's for some parents it's hard to get Buy in because they they just don't have that trust when they hear the location and kind of once I describe what's going on to them and sometimes they're immediately turned off by the idea so uh we we can
028meet some challenges there with Buy in from parent and Mr Felder um we've had 12 uh with very varying degrees of success we had at least one young person who to work off his um plan was at the high school helping out the clean up Middle School also for um when we give away food to the community so just a way for the kids to give back without feeling that they're they're being punished and there's no there's no trickery involved in this when they come to the diversion program when when they leave the program like today was 1:00 they go back to school the same day there's no trickery no strings nothing we just hope we catch these kids in time Mr Felder some of the same things we have in juvenile court are some
029of the things that you address with the trcy situation yes um a lot of times again I I get get a chance to speak to parents often um in regards to the the treny situations and a lot of times parents are telling me that they' uh given up so to speak on their their kids as far as trying to get them to come to school I've had Parents offer me their child's phone number told me maybe you can call and talk to them and change their mind things of that nature so uh it's challenging it's challenging even when those are the cases where I can actually make contact with somebody many of the cases I don't make contact with people so it's it's tough but we keep trying uh the top dog program uh you
030can see the vision uh Mrs Wilson has worked very hard to make that program successful Miss Wilson I think you're pleased with what we have with Top Dog yes um I think we are also a great start with top dog and some initial members I should say founding members of top dog um we had a great presentation by two of our members today at cation um it really um provides support and opportunity and that collaboration piece with um male mentors in the community so to great that discipline um just briefly the discipline deals with these areas primarily uh we hope every single year with all the help that that we have for our young people our discipline incidents go down suspension rates and discipline rates go down but all of these things are part of
031the discipline process that the schools go through in the district these are some of the collaborations that we have we have quite a few probably it's been over a month now that big mobile unit vehicle was on El property so now what we have is we have a rotation so that the vehicle can be at all the buildings every day of the week is a specified day for the unit to be in a building parents have to sign up for their kids uh say the man was at um Maple Lea but a parent is from William Foster she can bring her child to the mobile unit just with a signed document they got to go to work they live on a different side of town so we are very uh grateful that we have had
03212 so far this this uh is 45 ft 45 ft long they have two two um examination rooms full examination rooms they very very impressive and it's not cost the district a DME it's just another authentic collaboration that we have at the clev clinic marry mon Boys and Girls Club we're continuing the after school programs and uh upcoming summer programs we're trying to expand it now so that all of our buildings have uh got the school programs for the boys in Cross you may be wondering how come you don't have it at the high school because high school kids present different problems that require more structure you can't mix them with middle school kids so down the road we're hoping that we can make this happen too for high school kids these are some again
033these are some of the programs that we're involved in right now look at one that says Clippers and convos you're probably saying what the hell does that mean that means that these are Barbers who come in and give kids haircuts but while they getting haircuts they getting conversation about good behavior good attendance good grades that kind of thing and it's free to the uh to the kids and that's one that we're particularly pleased with um to the game has 50 young people at the middle school involved with that in terms of helping our kids to adjust and do the same thing that they're doing up here grades attendance and behaviors and that's been working very well matter of fact sometime the schools ask us when are they coming back see when you say that we
034have starting soon what that means is they've been approved matter of fact the board approved these a couple months ago but in order for them to get geared up they want to make sure they have all their supplies and that kind of thing ready before they start and we have said uh Dr Reynolds said that we need to have this for for the board they're all going to give us data and we're coming up now on the six week or on six week Mark where we said everybody has to give us data so that we can present that to Dr Reynolds and he can present it to you how effective are you how do you know how many kids do you have and that kind of thing this is a really interesting I think I
035told a board about this a couple of months ago maybe Dr rynolds you did this is almost like the Make A Wish Foundation is's a form that uh a staff person or a community person can submit say listen you know this kid lost mother father uh he's going through some trauma or she uh house burned down and you WR WR out what you want for this child and we've had 12 no we've had 11 and they grant our wishes with no strings attached you can bring your mother your father family members Kalahari overnight uh an Indians game Mr Glazer we had one today at 4:30 yes at 4:30 uh Miss vagan and I went to the young lady's house um her dream was to be a dancer so they um in all expenses paid uh
036dance classes summer I believe it's 5 weeks long um they'll include Transportation her registration for the class and all of her clothes shoes and everything that comes with it um she also got a overnight stay and all-inclusive trip to Cedar Point this summer um a shopping spree at Target um and everything's paid for so and she tragically lost her father yes that's why we had a line instead of a number because Mr Glazer came I just came from there yeah all of the agencies pretty much that we um meet with some of them are referred by you board members some of them called the superintendent we talk to everybody we can't bring everybody in but we can at least meet with them and talk to them and say listen down the road after you give
037us a request for proposal if we can afford you then we can bring you in uh we work very closely with the diversity equity and inclusion Department uh Mr hurt and um I just here Mrs Rice and all of these things that we do to work with young people to help them with emotional well-being uh staying in school knowing how to uh relegate their emotions so that every time they get upset it doesn't result in a fight they learn how to problem solve and this is this is ongoing like all over the district uh not just with uh tier supports PBIS but with the guidance counselors all kinds of of interventions and agencies helping these young people kind of stay in balance these are some of the things that either happened or will be happening
038and we put these on a second time because we wanted to make certain that uh the board saw that there are a lot of things that go on in the school district like almost every month we were disappointed a little bit with the toy drive uh this past year Miss Wilson can you tell what happened with that um sure um we had an event our Winter Wonderland event planned and we just didn't get the toys in on time um but we did um find a solution and we had a toy drive at the high school thank you to Mr Townson and his staff for accommodating um our last minut setup um but we were able to distribute the toys just some time for Christmas um and and it turned out to be a really great
039of it after all and I guess from what they told us we have to get our order in earlier earlier I think you they said then we did I think there was a large uh request for toys this year um and we request over 1,200 toys every year so it's always a big order for us um so they promise they'll be better next year now I'm going to ask you in a minute well I got five slides of show you and don't shout your answer out the second one here's the third one Arabic here's the fourth one Hindi Punjabi and guara is next okay what do you think they say just yes the date there's no wrong answer I just wanted you to see something you know why put these up here those all yeah
040those are the languages and that's how they say welcome to this board meeting today are those all languages that are represented in our district yeah yeah and you know why I put that up because when I saw this I'm like what that's what our little kids get some time when they come here from a foreign country well somewhere else don't speak English at all not even Where's the restroom um hungry Gina told me that was right but this right here and I think they write from they write from right to left I I didn't know somebody had to tell me so I just thought the bu find that interesting a little little quiz almost done the communities and schools um I'm want to show you a picture in a second we've had them for a
041couple of months and they are awesome uh they take kids to on trips they meet with them to talk about their emotions uh they have rewards for them um this Friday there's going to be a reward party for these kids at Maya because of their good behavior and attendance and that's Paige she's Maple Leaf and she's put all these things together like this is uh she said to celebrate women all the kids in her class are going to write letters to the most significant female in their lives she's going to put them in the hallway outside her office on the second floor and because they've been so good Friday is going to be a DJ soda pizza just a celebration for these young people I think is great that's the flyer that she gave out
042and the kids the other day they had those glow sticks you know those things that you twist them and you put them around your neck they had them in Maple Leaf so they're so excited about uh about Friday and last Thursday night we were at William Foster for kindergarten night because that's where the kindergarteners will be attending they'll be at William Foster nice turnout brand nice turnout uh people are happy uh we were happy to see these people and the end can I answer answer any questions any questions for Dr dpri M yes M Cox M Cox uh the first question is for the TR officer or I if you can answer um if do we have data on how many students you can't reach um as it relates to um the lack of attendance
043are we keeping track of I I heard you say that some you just can't reach are you keeping the data on those students uh we do have some data on that um I haven't completed I guess all of the the the list that I that I received from the schools I haven't gotten through all of it but yet okay um and then the other question I had was um I noticed that there were 12 students that participated with top dog um is that is that right no I think 12 students were I mean participants I'm sorry we have 10 ment yep we have 10 a total of 10 okay that's what I well we always looking for more okay so if anyone's interested they can contact me okay any other questions for Dr Dupri and
044his team Madam president I have a few questions yes Miss Thomas um back to the true and see um issues one of the slides uh mentioned a 4-year Gap what exactly does that mean there was a uh there is a situation thank you for pointing that out the juvenile court does not want to take kids at all for try and they told us that they said you're wasting your time Mr Felder went to Maple Maple Heights Mr Felder for that probation office yeah I talked to the branch in Maple Heights and um the branch uh downtown and I got a pretty good runaround from them when I was trying to reach out to people um I've heard from other school districts that they um connect with liaison to do this process and so um I've
045been trying to see if we can get a liaison here but um I was told by Maple Heights that they stopped doing it over there 4 years ago that they stopped actually um addressing truancy there and that they were referring it to divver s m Thomas they tell us that they're dealing with kids with guns and Breakin and that kind of thing and thaten is nowh on your radar thank you U my second question how often is the student of um student code of conduct revised once you year and then my last question um you may or may not have the data right here today but are you able to provide the board or provide Dr Reynolds with um data around suspension numbers and exposion numbers um this year and historically so that we can
046review that yes we can yes you want to see Trend data this time yes any other questions for Dr de Madam president yes M um some of the barriers that you shared with diversion program and truy um was related around the parents what are we doing to support the parents um and assisting that they can trust the process and that we are collaborators like how are we building those trusting relationships with the parents and give them the supports they need so that we can reach their student before we make a referral to the court Mr Daniels uh guidance counselor uh Mr Felder and and all talk to them and say listen this is a good thing give us a chance to see if this can help your child and sometime it works Mr Glazer you
047bought at least one to the the court you tell us parents to bring them in so it's a partnership with the parents um sometimes they requested sometimes we suggest it um you know anything we can do to support the families please stand your question um yes do do we ever um launch like our parent University um that we had maybe mentioned a while ago to kind of educate parents and support them was this supposed to be a parent University or something a parent parent University okay okay I didn't know if I could okay um so it has not launched yet we just had conversations about the idea of the parent University um I was say just last week um and finding a space that we can utilize to bring um additional opportunities and resource to
048our families um so that was just talks last week about bringing that about and to be able to provide those additional resources um I believe that the the collaboration with the attendance and our plans and things initiatives that the district has been trying to doing to combat attendance and our chronic absenteeism um had a big part of that is the family engagement piece and bringing them to to the table to create the plans to try to decrease or increase their attendant increase our attendance rates um so um that will be coming soon and I will be able to give you an update thank you and I just have one last question um I'm excited about the Cleveland Clinic um bringing their mobile unit to the district um was hoping to see more than 12 people
049utilize it but I wonder if there's a way we could kind of connect families like where we see that immunizations are you know do for their students and let them know he we can get these up today for you you know um prior to um did we or possibly like our kindergarten night letting our parents know that is it just students of the district or could other community members utilize the they said if other community members come they're not going to turn them away as long as they fill out the FL okay and to address your question Miss Daniels we plan on uh emphasizing that plus um sports physicals before school starts oh great great thank you m pres Miss Scot I'm glad you mentioned the sports physical that was going to be one of
050my questions the other question is how often do we do the College and Career Readiness is that a fair that's another group yeah that's it that's another group who focuses on College and Career it usually comes out of uh our guidance counsel department where the focus is on making sure that our kids are are prepared uh that was one of the areas that we've been working with the high school to ensure and with our folks who are traveling to cbcc just to make sure that they are coming out of cbcc with um certifications and that we're having plans for kids and we understand exactly where they are within their plan to ensure that I use this a lot when they graduate on Friday they know exactly what they're doing on Monday because that would be
051the last thing I want to have for our children to just be lost and now we have kids who are just walking up and down turning and their graduates and there's nothing there's no Focus for them um what we're also trying to do is even grab some of the kids who um we may have missed in several years of the past I've been trying to pump this idea and trying to figure out how to get it going calling the project 13 is just making sure that we are available for for some of our graduates who need help with Workforce Development I'm in a conversation with the mayor about trying to make sure we're creating kind of a pipeline um even with uh GED programs for families who may need some other offerings but that that
052whole project 13 is just to grab kids who need maybe even need just a little more time to mature because that happens sometimes you know they just kind of get out and then they figure out a year or two later oh my goodness I really need to get this thing together I want to make sure that they're looking to us for help any other questions comments I want to welcome Mr Felder it's very nice to put a face to the name and thank you for all that you do on behalf of the district with your work with our our families and our our students thank you all right thank you very much than sir thank you all right next we'll go to our superintendent's report thank you madam president certainly an exciting time here at

058very very exciting event uh this new turf field would restore the potential of Hosting athletic events at our home site uh as should be the case but most importantly renews excitement empowers our students and staff and truly enriches our community for years to come so thank thank you to Mr OKO and Miss Wilson for their Dynamic efforts for all of these months and in Miss Wilson's all those years of making sure those relationships were built and to everyone who had who made this a very special event last Friday the community will definitely hear more about progress of this project in the weeks to come so thank you for your continued support and this concludes my report thank you are there any questions for uh Dr Reynolds all right no questions we'll go to um public

064know about any extracurricular activities as far as um for the high schoolers um as far I I heard you know the upcoming event the event you were talking about the um what was it bam what program I'm Sorry Miss Wilson what program were you talking about Top Dogs yeah Top Dog program I wanted to know a little bit more about that Top Dog program um I do um workshops in the community um at the library um to help reach the community as an Outreach uh with my program as well um to um in you know to help young girls and boys with their self-esteem and confidence so I've been noticing as a residents a lot of children in the community just wandering around after schol school um during the hours right after school lets out
065around 2:00 I've had incidents where you know vacant houses next door to me and which has finally uh got attention of the um landlords you know but maybe three it took maybe three to five calls where they're hanging out you know doing things that's not appropriate you know um a lot of empty houses that um squash ERS you know they're just hanging out you know drinking doing whatever you know teenagers want to do so my question some of it and you know some fights and different stuff some of it stems from um and you may know this uh some of it come from school I'm a teacher myself I'm a prek teacher U for hair but some of the stuff STS from the schools I'm just thinking of any future things on the table for
066maybe something recreational um programming for the young um teenagers I hear a lot for the younger children um reaching them at an early age but like someone had mentioned you know reaching back to the children who may have graduated they still living in a community and for some reason you know I say they think they're the cool kids you know but Garfield is really not like the rough neighborhood but you know um they watch a lot of Tik Tock Instagram stuff like that so they try to do um I've seen a change I've been a resident here all my life since childhood um different areas I lived in currently I live off at turny road but over the years I see the difference um and I'm quite sure if you live out here you may
067see the difference as well with the generation and and the children and um the different families Dynamic has changed tremendously so I'm all for helping the community and the Outreach you know On My Level but just want to know if there anything on the table for recreational stuff I you can answer that thank you for your question as well uh this is a conversation we've been having not only with within the school district oh I'm sorry this the second question cuz I know I only get one the Civic Center you know it used to be open back in the day and I was just wondering is that being utilized for anything okay okay well I I don't know about the Civic Center exactly um I know that there's been conversation about doing some things differently
068at the rec center we've been working with the with the city and just having conversations about um what can we do to work together um a lot of folks think that this is specifically a school district issue it's not it is a community issue every Community I've been a part of of my schools we've had the same type of issue um where we work together with the community because as as a school district as a former High School principal I can't walk kids to their door I can't do that but what we can do is create programs so that we can give some kids some things to do so one of the things I've been in conversation with the athletic director was creating an intervie program and basically we're going to run it as just
069as you would with a a recck ball program basketball program where three on three um you run a whole tournament I want rankings I want all those things just so kids can like oh we're ranked number two and you know those sort of things and then it goes into kind of a a championship type of situation obviously I'm not just strictly talking about sports here what I'm trying to do is go and set it up on the front end we now we're looking at kids so there's a study time they have to go through before they get to basketball there's check-ins to make sure your grades and your attendance and those things are on par so you use those things you use basketball as a lure to to make sure kids are doing what they
070what they need to do and we're also partnering with some clergy as well who offered some opportunities recently I met with them last week um who offered some opportunities that are outside of the box some cooking courses some audio visual pieces and so there are things that we've been working with the community because again this is something that there should be a community response but there are some things that we've been working on as recent as like I said last week we're trying to put some things in the um um the rec department here um along with mayor Burke actually met with one of our coaches hny Johnson looking at the unused tennis courts and what can be done right there to to actually utilize those things for our children as well so things are
071in the works because we recognize that as well we we recognize the same thing you see out there we see the same things and we will be pushing forward to make sure that we're we have options for for children whether they will take us up on that sometimes we have to strongly encourage them to participate in some of our things but we we want to create those opportunities and even when I was talking about with um the piece with project 13 yeah I I wouldn't know the children I wouldn't know kids who graduated 5 years ago or three years ago I wouldn't know that but I still need them to see us as a resource for them like we we're bulldogs for life we so it's not you graduate and we're done with you I
072don't want that feel I want that feel okay what kind of resources does the school district have for me even though I'm in my 20s now what can we do and I want to be able to answer that a community yes as a community I can't speak Community if I'm not trying to help the community as well right my daughter like she ice skates you know and we utiliz the you know and for the summer they have swimming but from what I'm hearing from my neighbors if you have a I have one but if you have a family of five they can't afford the the the rec center um on a fixed income they can't afford um you know taking the skating it's not expensive maybe for me because I have one but a lot
073of children like you were saying as an example the basketball they do more than basketball I mean more than ice skating and swimming in Garfield Heights a lot of them you know the library I'm I'm there practically all the time and they use the resources to the best of their ability but sometimes they get a little too loud or ranchy you know excuse my language but um for the what they could do to where it may burn out the the community in that aspect you know they got a lot of growth great programs in the library but it's becoming more so like a babysitting thing you know they're open toight and that's the new hangout you know and I'm quite sure if you're coming in you don't want you know the mob of kids coming
074in you don't know what's going on in the bathrooms you know at the local library and I said because there's no Outlet you know there's nothing and it comes a lot of stuff can stem from you know the little groups they form you know so it's just the outlet it was just a thought you know that I was having and I saw um some of the programming the collaborations I am Bella and queen I am um which I've been in contact with some of those programs um and another gang I I he you talk about treny I know that some of the programming like the uh gang diversion program have reached out to um I forgot your name the family engagement Miss Cox I think is that your name yeah so um you might be
075getting emails from them they're just trying to come into the system um to collaborate and give out resources so it's a lot of people I I'm optimistic that want to partner like even with myself they have a lot like you all said that's coming forward and have a lot to offer and we just all care about the children in the Next Generation like I said my daughter's 20 now but I'm still living here you know and when this house is next door to me and kids just hanging out you know I don't want to move out of the city because I've been here so long but I'm glad about the football field it's been a long time coming a long time coming like a probably over 20 years coming so I'm happy about that so
076I want to see the progression I don't want to move out my city I grew up in since I was a child you know I'm 55 now but you know you want to see it progress and in all means you know all hands on deck I have something to bring to the table as well so I mean you know I'm all in right and we welcome welcome party so thank you very much for coming toight appreciate all right great conversation thank you all right our next board meeting our special board meeting um work session will be April 88th um so we will be meeting the night of the eclipse eclipse will be over so we will be meeting that evening at 6:00 um our regular uh board meeting will be at 6: pm on April
07715th at the high school and at this time I will will take a motion to adjourn the meeting at so is there a second second that was moved by Miss Daniels and second by Miss Morrison can I good I have a question think we have quick discussion oh yes ma'am um the agenda says April 9th it's April 8th not April 9th for our work session our work session will be April 8th sorry we moved it to April 9th because of the eclipse day on the agenda but it will be April 8th okay thank you can I get roll call please Mrs Daniels yes Miss Morrison yes Miss Cox yes Miss Thomas yes Miss King yes and with that our meeting isour thank you
