001yep okay i'd like to call this meeting to order [Music] so first up 3.01 public comment um at this time we don't have any uh in-person comments on miss heidenreich i believe we have one submission online okay so at this time miss henry can you read that this is from christian reg diversity and learning materials as the school district updates its curriculum and library media policies please keep the strategic plans diversity equity and inclusion goals in mind students need to see themselves reflected in the books they read i applaud ksd librarians for adding more books with protagonists of different races sexual orientation orientation gender identities and abilities i hope this process of diversifying the school library collection continues sacrificing the diversity and accessibility of library books and instructional materials due to a small number of
002parent objections does not serve the best interest of a student body at large further the determination of what constitutes controversial material or mature themes varies with time as well as with the person making the determination instituting labels like these sets a tenuous precedent that could result in a growing number of books and topics being restricted over time there are already multiple layers of review for books and other learning materials as well as the ability for any parent to place restrictions on the materials their child has access to i urge the district to focus on implementation of these existing safeguards rather than adding more thank you mrs heinrich okay next up 3.02 i need a motion in a second to approve the agenda for the april 18 2022 regular meeting is presented okay all those in

009doctor thank you very much president andrews at this point time i will turn it over to dr fields as this is the first in what will be a series of monthly updates that you'll get from dr fields specifically regarding staffing as it relates to our class size and we get closer to the beginning of the 22-23 school year dr fields thank you dr albert good evening community colleagues um as well as the board of education as dr olwick already alluded to this is the first of the 22 23 school year class size reports a little bit of preliminary information just so you'll know all class sizes are based on the actual enrollment data that was reflected in infinite campus on the date of april the 12th 2022. previously and up until this point the class
010size guidelines were held with regards to msip5 moving forward you will see the class size within the guidelines of m6 which is the missouri school improvement plan in the sixth cycle which will go into effect starting the 22-23 school year you will notice that all of the current ksd guidelines or in compliance with the minimum standard for the department of elementary and secondary education for the state of missouri before i go to the specific elementary schools we do have a elementary staffing guidelines that we use this will let us know when to begin to monitor as well as have conversations about opening the section as well as potentially closing the section and so with that information i will start with kaiser the information in front of you shows that we have five sections of kindergarten
011projected for kaiser five sections for first grade five sections for second grade currently four sections for third grade as well as four sections for fourth grade as you can see we are currently one student away as of april the 12th before we need to potentially open a section of fourth grade at kaiser and last but certainly not least currently four sections at fifth grade for kaiser as well transitioning to north glendale we have five sections of kindergarten first second third as well as fourth grade and then we're paying close attention to fifth grade which currently we have a 101 student and it's based off the elementary guideline slide that i previously showed we need at least 104 to begin conversations about opening another section for robinson the numbers are in front of you but i
012do want to direct your attention to the kindergarten numbers as of right now we have more sections that we would deem as necessary for kindergarten it is my understanding that from now into the summer we will continue to monitor those numbers because enrollment does increase specifically with kindergarten around this time having said that any event that we need to have conversations as we may have more sections than what is being necessary we will come back and have a conversation pertaining to that but again right now we have four kindergarten sections projected four first grade sections projected three second grade four third grade four fourth as well as fourth of fifth grade the same holds true for the kindergarten sections at tillman again we have four sections and as of right now based off of 39
013that would be more commensurate to three numbers so we will continue to monitor those numbers we currently have projected four sections for first grade four sections for second four sections for third four sections for fourth and currently three sections for fifth grade and rounding out the elementary schools we do have westchester again the same dynamic with regards to kindergarten we currently have 51 students which is more commensurate for three sections as opposed to currently the four as previously stated we will monitor those numbers and make and adjust accordingly for fifth grade we currently have five sections projected six sections for second grade four sections four third grade four sections for fifth grade and again for fifth grade we are monitoring those numbers because while we have five sections right now if you go back to
014previous slides 104 are needed for the fifth section so again we may have to have some conversations pertaining to be in alignment with the guidelines that we previously provided this next slide provides you with a snapshot related to all of our elementary schools as well as all of the sections that we have you will see that anything in red are class sections that are highlighted because currently we are close to the class size guidelines and in this regard we are over in those three areas so again for example fourth grade and kaiser we have 26 26 26 and 25 though 25 will be the number that we are looking at to be in compliance with our guidelines 104 will be the total number that we look at before we open an additional section same holds
015true with north glendale you will see the 26 which is for one of our sections in fifth grade as we transition to the secondary we have knifer and you will see the enrollment as of april the 12th courtesy of infinite campus followed by north kirkwood middle school and last but certainly not least for the secondary dynamic we are looking at kirkwood high school in future presentations you will see additional slides um this is the initial reference point and i do want to make sure we highlight trans and so starting next month you should see a comparison of may with regards to the numbers and compare that to what we have in april right now but those slides were not deemed necessary for this presentation and before i get a chance to turn it back over
016to dr ulrich to facilitate any questions based off the actual enrollment date and infinite campus as of april the 12th 2022 we are paying close attention to six different sections the first four are with regards to us having more sections than we deem necessary and as a reminder that would be robinson kindergarten tillman kindergarten westchester kindergarten and westchester fifth grade and we are also looking at two additional sections due to the potential of us opening up another section that being kaiser fourth grade and north glendale fifth grade this will be the most appropriate time for questions so i'll turn it back over to dr holberg all right thank you very much dr fields and as dr field said based on questions that we have received in the past uh year specifically regarded to uh with
017regard to this presentation in uh next month not only will we include the information from the change from april to may we will also compare it to may of last year and where we were so that information i know is very important to the board of education to follow along on those trends so we'll make sure that we include that and so uh with that uh president andrews i'll turn it over to you okay board at this time i'll start at this end mr important um one question if we do need to add sections at kaiser and north glendale do we have classroom space i'll tell you yeah the answer is yes we would have nicer spaces thank you thank you for um next month comparing it from last year because i think that's really
018powerful and i just had another question i noticed robinson's only got three sections of the second grade um and also tillman had fifth grade with only four sections is that what we currently have uh specifically for robinson because first grade has five and then second grade has four and third grade like there's a drop so is that something that has just happened or we've had that all along there have been some trends in terms of right now we're looking at first grade and we did not have a second grade section specifically for robinson and so if i'm looking at the first grade numbers now first grade would be the three sections that we had we did not add a section and so there have been some inflation or lack thereof due to a number of
019reasons but it appears as if it's all over the place as it relates to the sections when we compare the elementary schools okay yeah i think it's important to point out that just like we have bubbles of larger bubbles that we have going through things westchester second grade we also had some in some instances where just a smaller bubble is bubbling through the uh through the system and it would be that would be consistent with second grade robinson okay thank you um just a few questions um can you provide us at some point with the information on on collapsing sections that's always something that that parents and community members do like to kind of have an understanding of uh and then also if you could note in your presentation next time are there sections that
020are on the possible end of where we've got to collapse and then my next ask would be that when we have students that are leaving us can we start to ask the why um that a student is leaving yeah just to kind of get get that information of um if people are leaving maybe an understanding of why and where they're going yeah i work with dr megan's office says hr typically doesn't have conversations with students i'm sure we can figure something out okay so thank you dr fields thank you moving on to um curriculum um next up is k through five art um dr albrecht all right thank you very much president andrews i appreciate that and we have uh make sure we get the make sure we've got the right person at the right
021mike here um and joining us uh and i'll let you introduce uh the person joining you dr painter but um as you well know we are working continuously through our six year curriculum development cycle so i appreciate the board helping us stay on that calendar and so this will be our presentation first what you said we'll start with k25 art dr painter good evening i appreciate your time this evening um and i hope that tonight will look very familiar to you um and i think that's on purpose we are trying to set a template and kind of a pattern for curriculum work so that you and our community members can kind of follow along and expect honestly know what to expect as we go through tonight i'm excited that you get to hear about three
022additional curricular areas for our district and as with everything else that we do in our district our curriculum work starts with our strategic plan we are every time we pull together teachers to do this work we are looking at our mission and our vision we're looking at our priority goal areas we're looking at the guiding principles that we have before us and i should pause and just say that it is it is a pleasure for our facilitators for me to get to work with our facilitators and dr grant and for our teachers to be engaged in this work they are always doing terrific work in our classrooms with our kids of course but curriculum work is not what a lot of our teachers signed up for but they care very much about what they teach
023and they are classroom experts that can really bring a lot to the table and so um they are invaluable to our process and i just want to mention that before we go any further not only do we start with our strategic plan but actually strategic objective 1.1.3 outlines the fact that we have a six-year curriculum process that we are supposed to continue working through every year uh we you are being bombarded this year with uh i think 14 or 15 curricular areas and that will be the case for a number of years going forward because we are honestly catching up on some areas that we had to pause on or that maybe needed some additional work going forward our our six year cycle does include four distinct phases that i say distinct but they really
024blurt together and feed into each other intentionally and as it gets to this to this point as we get into development then our facilitators and our teachers are bringing the work to our curriculum review committee we have 64 people on this committee that represents students teachers parents uh community at large members administrators facilitators and they are invaluable as well in this process they really do provide feedback uh as as they are getting information uh through this process and the feedback they provide actually does impact the work that we do not only curricularly but sometimes in a programmatic level as well and so we do want to give a shout out to all of our members of the curriculum review committee again because they are being bombarded with a lot of curricular areas this year this
025slide will we will get to the point where you could walk us through these slides but this one particularly is very important because it highlights the what we're bringing to you for board approval the board approves and this is really the foundation of the curriculum work that we do everything that we do in our classrooms goes back to the priority standards and skills that we are aligning our curriculum with with the essential questions that we develop as teacher teams and with facilitators the enduring understandings that we are looking to really make sure that our kids to take away from these courses and from the year of learning and then finally the scope and sequence there's a lot of work that happens beyond that that our teachers are engaged with but that's the foundation that everything
026builds upon and so that's really what's the important work that we're bringing to you and that we bring to the crc as well as mentioned last time uh we have gotten out through five curricular areas that have been brought to you and the last three will be um brought free for your approval um that we talked about two weeks ago are part of consent agenda tonight uh but tonight you get to hear about uh k5 visual arts with bethlehem fitzpatrick who's right next to me who we are thrilled to have in our district he's does we were so fortunate to be able to hire him this year and um he has done a fantastic work with a number of different curricular areas in groups of teachers and then following up declan we will have miranda
027dix who we also were able to hire this year and we've she's she's been around she's been at robinson so we've been very fortunate to have her in our district and this is just another opportunity that we could bring miranda in and work in a leadership role across the district so um and then we have zach kirk who's with her as well who is a fantastic business teacher at the high school who's going to be a part of the presentation with her so for now i'm going to pass this over to declan and let him talk to you talk with you about k5 visual arts good evening thank you for the opportunity to present our k5 visual arts curriculum this evening um as brian just talked about that we start with the strategic plan then
028i would particularly like to draw your attention to the guiding principles of equitable flexible and inclusive as we look at the k-385 art curriculum of course what we're asking for your approval on when this comes to the board for approval next time is the desired results phase and so that's what's highlighted in both the curriculum document that is attached to the board item and what i will highlight in this presentation as we go through of course our curriculum is built on the missouri learning standards for k-5 art the missouri learning standards in all the fine arts are organized around four themes of create present respond and connect and each of our units in the k-5 art curriculum provides students with an opportunity to do all four of those themes so our units are designed around
029projects and topics that address those four themes in every unit our curriculum contributors are our k-5 art teachers there were five art teachers and the k5r teachers in the district then all five of them participated in the entire process of six meetings this year to develop the curriculum the next six slides highlight for you the essential questions and enduring understandings from each grade level you can see that this structure for curriculum focuses on concepts and big ideas so we address important questions in art like how do artists learn the steps to make things from clay and how do you know when you're using tools safely those are questions that we ask kindergarteners to grapple with in k by art and we address big ideas like artworks can be both useful and beautiful and artists learned
030by experimenting and imitating and that goes all the way through first grade second grade third grade fourth grade fifth grade the essential questions and enduring understandings each of these are tied to specific units inside your curriculum document when you look at the curriculum document each unit has a brief description of what the unit is about and then it identifies the enduring understandings the big ideas the learning objectives and it lists for you the exact missouri learning standards that the unit is aligned to you can see as you as we go through all six of these slides when we get to fifth grade we're dealing with ideas like artists refine their skills and combine techniques for working in a specific medium or artists experiment with blending primary and secondary colors to discover the colors they can
031create the tools that they have we also ask students to grapple with questions like where do you display your artwork and how can we display our art so that people will enjoy it and as i said mentioned before each of those is aligned to us each of those essential questions and enduring understandings are aligned to specific units and in our presentation here we lay out the patterns of units for you so you can see the repetition the spiraling of both skills and tools and media through the curriculum so that every year students have the opportunity to work in ceramics to work with clay they work with drawing they work with color theory and you'll see often grade levels we repeat concepts of printing and there's also color theory embedded each year so these are our
032actual unit topics through those sixth grade levels in our next step this summer for the exchange day the k5 and the k5 music teachers will be using the opportunity to look at the castle standards for social emotional learning and make sure that they are effectively embedded in the curriculum and to review our curriculum again for the rings of culture to make sure that we have shared agreements about where the rings of culture are embedded throughout their curriculum at this point i'm wondering if you have any questions for me okay i'll start with one okay no questions i do have one um when when will this be online do you mean the information that was just here um well it's on obviously it's on board docs now it will be on our cni website by the
033end of the week um well actually what i would prefer to do is wait until after it's approved um and so after that it will be it'll it'll reside there it's actually on our crc website now um for me can parents access that yes it's on the it's within our teaching and learning portion of our website um and then crc because we keep running documents there through the entire process okay perfect well thanks so much okay next up is 5.03 um personal finance and smash code i'm going to oh it is good to be here thank you for the opportunity to come tonight to speak about the two new courses coming to kirkwood high school in the business department we'll be speaking about personal finance as well as smash code number two again tonight i'll
034share the priority standards the essential questions enduring understanding the scope and sequence and i'll have an update as far as resources go as well for these two courses okay personal finance has been around for quite some time our business department has revised it to better align with updated guidance from jesse as well as in response to feedback we heard from the community during the strategic planning conversations that happened last spring what we really heard was that the community was looking for an increased attention to financial literacy and we think we've done that with this course every student is required to take this course and is offered for dual credit through missouri state university for students in 10th through 12th grades dr colleen roll and mr zack kirk who's here with me tonight we're both instrumental
035in designing this course our personal finance curriculum includes many state and national standards we relied on the deci personal finance standards as well as the national standards in k-12 personal finance education for the development of this course i've highlighted seven priority standards for us here tonight priority standards again are those standards which are most essential to a course while taking personal finance students will evaluate how career choices impact income and quality of life and create a budget that includes saving goals emergency funds fixed expenses and variable expenses an essential question is not a question with an easy answer instead a student's answer to an essential question might change or grow over time in fact the best essential questions spark deep conversation and encourage further questioning rather than quick answers in personal finance we've redesigned it
036to help students wrestle with difficult but important questions like what makes a good financial decision if you take just a moment to think of an answer for this question yourself you too might notice that it's not easy to answer quickly and your answer might change over time as well as i mentioned earlier all students are required to take this course in high school which means all students graduate with key understandings about their personal finances an enduring understanding is something students will remember beyond their time in this course far into adulthood so one enduring understanding i'll highlight for you tonight is the first one on this slide financial literacy and sound financial decisions can increase a person's standard of living and wealth the topics covered in personal finance range from a broad exploration of financial well-being
037all the way to the specifics of choosing housing in college and purchasing an automobile mr kirk again is with us today and he'll speak more to the student experience in just a moment the resources we've selected for this for this course are from nextgen personal finance and take charge today which is out of the university of arizona as far as next steps for personal finance are concerned we've already established which resources we're using as well as have common assessments for the course so next year we'll have an opportunity to assess how our curriculum is working we'll revise small details if and when the need arises to ensure that our results match our desired outcome which again is increased financial literacy for all students so at this time i'd like to ask mr kirk to speak
038a little bit to the student experience sure well one of the first things you think about when just the name personal finance it starts with personal and so one of the things we emphasize with students when they get into the classroom is that just like there's 30 of us in this room right now you probably have 30 different opinions about finance and the way you know they're thinking about money or how they might think about money in the future so that's where we start right away and then from there we kind of dive into the the research phase of you know what is it that you want to do when you get older and i'm sure some of us in this room we still question what we want to do when we get older but
039this opportunity for students start exploring how much you could potentially make in certain fields you know here at kirkwood we have a lot of students that go on to college a lot of students are going to out state college and so we really drive home how much college costs and how much you can potentially make and how that all relates because we're bringing back to this idea of you know talking to the students about debt that's a big thing you know we look at student loan debt you look at credit card debt two major things that we deal with in this country so trying to educate at least plant a seed in these students heads these are real things that you have to deal with outside of that wood what dr all and i looked
040into is to figure out how we could you know the spice has been around because we're lucky enough that missouri is only one in ten states that requires personal finance to be taken in high school which i think is a fantastic thing so we're lucky enough to be one of those states um but we really switch things up so it's more project-based learning for the students and what i mean by that is you know when we get into the tax units the students goes through a simulation with the 1040 form so they you know struggle through that just like we all kind of struggle through that they go through a stock market simulation game now can be tricky there is that if they're in there during the semester in which the stock market is good
041they might get a skewed uh idea of what the stock market can do on the flip side when it goes down but it's we're trying to make it most realistic as possible and the students that have that hands-on experience as they kind of start to learn about these topics and stuff of that nature are there any questions at this time about personal finance okay i will start down with you okay i jumped at the microphone um well i appreciate you going through all that and updating it based on the community feedback i think that was really important to note here um with your changes i would i'm i'm intrigued by how you highlighted that you know the cost of college and credit card debt and what that means on your personal finances and i would
042push you to also include the cost that transportation impacts families um and students in the future what we see in the industry i'm in is that transportation costs are generally 20 to 25 even 30 of uh households finances and that is often overlooked and can be a huge difference especially for new grads and for students to being out of high school so i would love to see how that could be incorporated so on a small scale we do we do touch base on them in our pledging unit we start talking about uh we we asked the students to find a market in which they're interested in potentially moving to like that job does that involve a car does it not involve a car if you're in new york city you're going to have a car
043or if you're going to live in saint louis where in st louis you have to drive so we do explore that but maybe not as much detail as what you're talking about so be definitely something we need to look to especially with the rise of gas without a doubt correct i think and again i'm in the transportation industry so i hear it every day but it is a huge way for for us to to impact our financial uh economies um and then you highlighted in one of your areas that you're gonna students are gonna learn a little bit more about identity theft i'd love to hear more about that when you come back to us just again that's such a huge topic right now absolutely lovely so thank you very much yeah can i interject
044just one thing real quick just based on that um one of the things that we did look at when we looked at the curriculum was you know we all have smartphones and the way that we go about with our banking systems has changed quite a bit so we have layered that into that aspect of banking for some of the old school theories of writing check i think shamelessly uh continuous penguins speaking about what interests us most as someone who got his taxes done early this morning i very much appreciate that from my stomach through this course he got you know that experience as well but as someone who grew up to do a job that handles investing particularly retirement plans you would mention the business stock exercise can you look in more detail sure it
045is within our investing and the stock market game the students are given a million dollars to run a portfolio um we go through uh and we do make sure we tell them we're not licensed advisors but you know to talk about the different levels of risk involved everything from cds and government bonds up to commodities talking about mutual funds different types of stocks high risk stocks blue collar stocks and so try to educate them on the kind of the different layers of risk that are involved with it um and i will i will say this in the personal finance teachers some have a little bit more depth of knowledge on that but it's something that we try to do with it bring the students back to evaluate it on a weekly basis just to see
046um they can see that the market can fluctuate because one of the things we want the students to realize is it's not a guarantee here in any way should perform there's opportunity to build wealth based on some of the tools that are out there but we we don't go into great detail in it that would be a next level course that you start to look into okay yeah so i would encourage just because whatever path children are on they're going to be increasingly up to their own sort of devices to save for their own retirement and encountering a 401k just the choices that you have to make that sort of thing if there's time in the schedule to give them an introduction to that absolutely um thank you for this uh i will piggyback off
047of what mark said um you said you'd give them like a million dollar idea is there do you ever do anything that's more realistic about that so okay yeah i completely understand where we come from with a million dollars um the reason we use that is just so the students can see the fluctuation a little bit more um if we say here's a thousand dollars the percentage-wise doesn't have as big of an impact so that's the reason we go with that number but we do do some exercises with the students just to show them uh we in particular we talk about compound growths and that's really where we show the students where you know if you start to get in and see that money grow over time so we do have realistic expectations of the
048students that not everybody has million dollars to invest and you're just saying we really start we really start having conversations with them if you put 100 away every single month at the age of 16 and watch how that pony grows over a period of time it takes a while for the snowballs but you start to get to a breaking point uh where you can see a lot more growth so that that conversation's happening when we talk about compound interest okay yeah because i think that would be beneficial so they can see if you don't necessarily need [Music] we have those realistic conversations the million dollars is more just to get them excited because you know there's little things like that you get them going in the club what about uh my cryptocurrency and those things
049that now you know it's really um popular and being talked about are they incorporating that into the class so i will say this um i think that each personal finance teacher has a different level of confidence and speaking to that is something that is new it's it's ever changing you know students ask about it they want to know what's all this crypto should i invest in this and i would just say that we have not yet touched that in regards to outside just a basic understanding of what the blockchain is and counterpoints we haven't gone to great detail we've just a small good um and then how absolutely i see there are 10 units about how long is each unit i would say on average one to two weeks um is how long each one
050lasts um it really depends some will be week long when you get to budgeting well you know two maybe three weeks uh by the end of the semester sometimes we have to condense based on especially this semester we looked at all the snow days and stuff that we had but on average all sticks you know just a week and then if they don't have a class well i think that i totally understand we're going with that and i think one thing we have to remember with this it's about planning a seat in their head about figuring out how to about making wise financial decisions they're not going to remember all the content they get from us especially when they're not using a day and day out basis when you talk about 401k and the importance
051of a company matching the first five percent how that's free money um you know when they get that first job in five years hopefully they've had a conversation between our class and then or maybe at least in the background about that but um you know we can't guarantee that it's just be able to plan to see it about figuring out how to make good personal finance decisions based on your beliefs and what you want to do it's a ever-growing and evolving process just one last question you said it's project based so are the children or the students that take the class on launch are they getting that same experience so great question um as far as the same experience can i get the same experience in the sense that in the classroom you know the
052teachers give that communication but as far as what we go through in a semester it's the same stuff that they they go through there they're just working on it more independently and not having the dialogue or the communication with the teacher or the community of the students they can have a little bit more in-depth conversations yeah so we do have personal finances that payload and doctoral role is the one who's in charge of that so the students have access to dr role for further instruction more in-depth questioning i just want to say i have three graduates and they took personal finance way back when six to ten years ago and thank you for making it current but also they do remember and now they have 401ks and they're always talking about their personal balance sheet
053um so i very much appreciate the class and i'm grateful that it's required so all of our students need it so they should know what they're doing as much as they can thank you okay and mr kirk thank you so much for taking your time to come here tonight i do have a question for dr painter so as mr kirk said um there are ever-changing things that probably as mr kirk learns more or his colleagues learn more the world changes that mr kirk is going to want to put into his class so walk me walk us through the process that when mr kirk has a change to his board approved curriculum what what does he do well i think it depends on if it is a change to the foundational pieces that we're bringing to
054you with the scope and sequence and the enduring understandings and essential questions or if it is a current event sort of topic yep so i'm just asking if mr kirk wants to change something to his curriculum to the curriculum itself yes then in that situation then it depends if it is something that that they agree as a as a group that all of the all personal finance courses this is a change that needs to be made across the board then that would be something a conversation that we would have with miranda or or whatever facilitator might be supporting that work um some of those you know we do have a six-year cycle and so there are other curricular errors that are being addressed in those years as well if it's a minor change then it
055might be something that we could bring back to the board um you know some adjustments have been made and we want to bring that back for your for your information for your approval if it's a major change if missouri learning standards change for example that significant changes would have to happen then that would be a more extensive process for our review yeah and just just as a summary with regard to the four aspects that we asked the board to approve if there was a change in any of those uh we would bring that to board for approval great so i guess um what if we could kind of clear that up for the teachers so that the teacher knows what to do and that um everyone else knows what to do if that could be
056something that we can absolutely that's the strength okay moving on now to splash code number two and mr kirk don't feel like you have to stand okay okay okay okay so we're excited about offering smash code number two as a bridge between our smash code number one and an advanced computer science course mr c nixon at kirkwood high school was the person who designed this course smash code number two relies on the desi computer science standards in k-12 and the national computer science teacher association k-12 standard in this course students will create problem solutions that utilize primitive variables and they'll develop and use a series of test cases to verify that a program performs according to its design specifications in smash code number two students answer essential questions like what makes a good program and
057what does it mean to be literate in the 21st century and they leave with enduring understandings like computing enables people to use the creative design process to solve and express themselves i'm sorry to solve problems and express themselves and that programs are developed maintained and used by people for different purposes in smash code number two students learn about writing code with conditionals how to loop how to write functions and exceptions and how to design strings and data structures that enhance their code the resource for smash smash code number two is code hs intro to computer science in python 3. and then similar to personal finance we've already established the resource and the assessments for smash code number two so next year we'll have an opportunity to assess how our curriculum is working and revise small
058details as needs arise so are there questions about smash club's viewers i just have a quick one it's um it's in python three and so that's nice code two so um i guess nationwide one is a different language and you're trying to get them ready for ap computer science and um the way mr nixon describes it which i think is really wise is he i heard him say this that smash throw number one is a lot like driving a car learning to drive a car an automatic um and smash code number two is a lot like learning how to drive a stick shift so you maybe want to take your skills a little bit deep you know to the next level and apply them in a different way whereas the compute advanced computer programming is
059more like designing the carbine and mechanics getting under the engine and like looking at how pieces work and putting them together to make a functioning machine they are they are both in python okay so you could have the flexibility to change the language so i'm just waiting for board approval so perhaps um that's something i know i have two computer science so that's why i checked but um also very well prepared from kirkwood high school from ap computer science so thank you again mr cavanaugh yeah thank you this thing's kind of intermittent so let's talk loud no no so in terms of is this in the context of the business uh department and is there any link to the entrepreneurial side in terms of or is it strictly more of a computer science coding it's
060more along the engineering side of things not from a business side or entrepreneurial side purely computer science based maybe something to consider down the road but i do see a lot of synergy there if you look at a lot of the upstarts and a lot of big tech companies or some of the ingrained ideas a lot of them started out as coders and it became business people so something to consider thanks okay well thank you so much i know that you have been busy working on this and i just want to say thanks for the formatting uh i think that that's really helpful and um again thanks for taking time away from your you know life to come speak to us yeah thanks guys okay and board that will be on the next agenda um
061for approval so moving on now to consent agenda 6.01 do i have a motion in a second to approve the consent agenda um 6.02 through 6. 11. second all those in favor please raise your right hand and say i motion passes okay um i need a motion and a second to approve the financial statement for march 22 uh or march 2022 as presented second mr romey you're up thank you good evening we're operating revenues in march for 1 million 973 000 and that mainly consists of current taxes property taxes state and federal revenue you'll notice that in the financial statements uh on the lincoln tax line that there's a negative amount and that's due to assessment corrections and refunds that were made to property owners by saint louis county this happens every year at some
062point during the year if we are allowed to recoup these funds the adjustment will be added to the 2022 tax rates that are certified by the state auditor's office and approved by the board of education in september operating expenditures for march were 6.4 million and that mainly consists of salaries and benefits in our construction fund we spent 349 thousand dollars during march and most of that was for professional services mr okay mr romay thank you this time board do we have any questions okay seeing no questions we have a motion in a second let's move to a vote all those in favor of approving um financial statement for march um 20. say hi [Music] i was like oh look at you trying to move this meeting along mr cavanagh i was like slow down now
063i'm doing pretty good okay moving on now mr romay you're up again 8.01 um telephone equipment thank you our current telephone system is becoming obsolete and needs to be replaced with a more modern system of voice over internet protocol our voip system uh the phone system that we currently have we've had interruptions and down time and it's also becoming more hard to support this system we were the board gave approval to issue an rfp in january the specifications called are indicated a preference for a hosted solution or cloud-based solution uh there's many benefits with the hosted solution but some of the main ones are it offloads a significant amount of network traffic that a voip system generates it would include 24 7 proactive monitoring of the system additionally the vendors that host these types of
064systems have data centers that will exceed our capability in terms of uptime failover capabilities disaster recovery also the vendor would be able to handle system updates security patching and other important maintenance features that will avoid service disruptions the bid that we're recommending comes from tech electronics this is a hybrid hosted solution and the hybrid piece just means that what they're proposing allows us to own the equipment and that will minimize the perpetual long-term cost of the system tech electronics is a well-known well-established local vendor we've used them quite a bit mainly with our building alarm systems the annual service and maintenance fees for this new system will save the district approximately 165 000 per year that's a three-year payback on the equipment the services and maintenance fees that we're currently paying mainly at t 230
065000 a year will be completely eliminated with this system so and those fees come out of the operating fund that's why i'm proposing that we use the operating fund to purchase this equipment and later for the cabling as well the director of technology and i are recommending awarding the telephone equipment bid to tech electronics in the amount of 491.31 for the hybrid hosted solution with the service and maintenance fees of 65 417 per year over the next five years and authorizing the district administration's assignment contract and ancillary documents okay um at this time do i have a motion or can i get a motion in this second to award the telephone equipment bid to tech electronic as presented so thank you okay and do we have any questions mr kavanaugh sure so thank you mr
066roman uh a couple questions uh number one revealing voip um do we have any extra costs on a monthly basis sorry the only cost that we know that we'll have to pay is these annual service fees it includes maintenance sip trunks and um i can't remember the name of another service that we have to pay but it's all included in that 65 000 but i'm not aware of any other fees that we would have to pay just double check that because usually okay and then question number two is from a support model so if anything goes wrong during that contract [Music] no they should do all of that we shouldn't have to troubleshoot any problems with the system now if some equipment fails it's under warranty for the first year beyond that then if the
067equipment if there's something going wrong with the equipment itself then we would be responsible for that so i would just okay i will check on that yeah there's a three-year payback for this you said and then how long do you foresee this contract to go forward the contract for the service and maintenance probably will continue as long as we're using the system we think probably 10 years but this pricing is guaranteed for five okay good thanks for that okay mr roman uh i just want to say thank you for being transparent about the thoughts you know and where they're coming from because um it just shows how responsible you are and how transparent you are to our our citizens in our community so seeing no further questions let's move to about all those in favor
068of approving the all those in paper to afford the telephone equipment bid to tech electronic um please raise your right hand and say hi all right motion passes next up mr room may are you kind of went over it do you mean no this is a completely separate bit okay but they're connected um so for the phone system we need network access for the phone system itself so this includes run running new cabling to every classroom and two offices as well but it also includes additional data drops for cameras that we plan to install across the district so this system this cabling will be for both phones and cameras we were the board gave approval to post crp in january we received three bids the low bid came from link data systems uh we have
069used them for other services in the past been very pleased with their service they also came highly recommended from other districts their little bit was three hundred twelve thousand four hundred and fifty six dollars prep r did include plans to improve safety and security in the district which included mainly included additional cameras uh the cabling cost for the additional cameras is about 20 of that is for cameras and that's we're planning on charging that to prop r the other 80 percent would then be charged to the operating fund the director of technology services and i are recommending awarding the bid to link data systems in the amount of 312 456 dollars and authorizing district administration to sign the contract and ancillary documents okay miss bankwood i just have a quick question there there's a big
070difference in costs here is that of any concern or did you look into that a little bit um we didn't really explore that we're not really sure why that is we talked to the two little bidders um but we didn't we didn't even spend any time on that high bid so not really sure my guess is that with a lot of construction type work that a lot of contractors are busy and that sometimes causes them to do a large number at a project hoping that they might get it [Music] so mike this is basically a pretty large structured cabling type project and i only asked this in terms of disruption and possible new asbestos or abatement are they using all the current runs or conduits or are they boring they're doing a new i don't
071know somebody knows i don't know the answer to that question um i i i'm not aware of any any boring um i think it's it's all above the drop ceiling is what i believe i do know that it's going to take several months to run to install the cabling and we have to have a phone system in place so what we are planning on doing for example in classrooms we're going to install a new phone right next to the old phone and and once it's completely installed and ready to go it'll be a matter of kind of flipping the switch and then we'll pull the old ones off the walls but they're going to run for the most part the same uh runs that the existing foam mines have i would just i would assume
072they're doing that but i would double check and maybe see if they built i know that our maintenance staff technology staff walked with all these contractors through the building that was part of a pre-bid walk-through so i know that they've they they're familiar with our site and like i said somebody would know the answer that i unfortunately just do not have that see no further um can i get a motion in a second okay guys don't don't all don't pop up at once second okay so all those in favor of approving um awarding the bid to lean data system for phones please raise your right hand and say bye motion passes yeah i just want everyone to look up at the this is called agenda management guys we appreciate that okay you're good you're five
073minutes late i know i know okay so at this time i've got future advents um we've got on the 25th we have a virtual board meeting um that is going to be virtual as it is a shorter meeting and then on the 26th we have a prep our power hour at noon and then on the 28th we have another prop our power hour at six then on april 28th we have an event uh many cultures one kirkwood 29. oh sorry 29 they would all be there a day early so that's april 29th uh many cultures won kirkwood at um 6 p.m at tillman then we're going to go into may may 7th is the spring fling may 9th is a board work session may 14 is the graduation for our seniors in kirkwood high school
074and that is at chaffetz this year so we're we're moving back to shaping so that's exciting and then on may 23rd it's a regular board meeting and then may 25th the last day of school and then the 30th district offices are closed for memorial day holiday um guys we do have a need for a closed session so i need a motion and a second to enter into closed session to discuss personnel 610.021 subsection 3 and subsection 13 roll call vote miss bernardi yes mr kavanaugh yes you need a motion oh whoa whoa whoa slow okay okay all right well thanks mrs oh okay miss bernardi yes mr cavanaugh miss chern yes um miss moteeka yes mr boycott yes yes and myself yes um thanks everyone for attending here yeah we're gonna stay in here
