Uh, so kudos to Jeff. He was awarded this based on our R seven build zone work because they have modeled what we do with the R seven build zone with a project they're taking to districts throughout the metro on both sides of the state line. Um and so that there that means there's a lot of people including some in this room uh who are involved in get Jeff getting that ward including his predecessor Jeff Buckner and many

I think year four for that. So that's a great addition. Um finally, uh before I turn it back over, um I'm going to ask in a minute, but not yet. I'm ask the board to come down. We're going to receive some of our graduates of our parent academy. So we had our fourth, uh cohort go through this year. Miss Dawson was a graduate of the third cohort. Um I'm excited about this program. It is a passion project of mine. Knowing the district recognizes importance of its partnerships with parents for future success, four year four years ago, we created the LSR7 parent academy. Principles were asked to recommend uh parents. Um they're all very honored to be recommended. Uh and so here is the class this year. We have 23 individuals who graduated. To graduate, you

had to go to three of the four nights. Um they're two-hour long nights. Um 16 of those 23, by the way, went to all four. They represent 19 different schools. And uh so it's a a good swath of our of our community. So we're very proud of that. And I want to tell you that they heard from 22 experts throughout the district whether it be building level or district level or operations in the operation buildings and just learned a ton. The feedback was great. They all wanted to have four more days. Um I appreciate that. This is not a requirement to come tonight, but we asked uh if they want to, we'd like to honor them. So at this time, I'm going to have the board come down to the floor to receive them. Miss

Talia Evans has their certificates if you can hand to the board so they can pass out. And then once the board is down there, I'll start calling off names. I'll call them off right through because again, it's not required. They didn't have to be here. I'm going to do it by alphabetical order of their first name. Um, so you as parents, you might cue yourself up there. Um, and I will do my best with pronunciation. So, and then afterwards, if the graduates, if you would stay, I would like us to take a group picture with the board of education. All right, Tal, you've organized everybody how you want to do it. >> All right. All right. I'm just going to go through the list. Amber Hudson, Amy Blunt, Andrea Townsen, Angela Vote, Ashley Bolan, Brett

Belmore, Cecilia Batsky, Chess, Chelsea Hatchel, Craig Nash, Jennifer Beltran, Jesse Rush, Jocelyn Kelly, Kayla Dearborn, Kelly Crust, Kelly Oliver, Lisa Martin, Ceda Trice, Erica Steinbeck, Haley Hughes, Ruben Mitchell, Shade King, Sweda Balas, Bramani, and then Tom Berdick. I am so I said I was going to go fast. I'm so sorry. and poor Talia's fit is, you know, filling in for Katie Bergen who is going to, you know, uh, >> all right, there you go. >> I also, while we're getting these 23 come through, I want to give a shout out to Jamie Bergland and Aaron Jennum, who also went to a couple sessions. >> Did I do okay with your last name? All right, graduates come to the middle. Come everybody. Everybody come to the middle. We'll get a picture. And while they're organized themselves,

can we give these uh ladies and gentlemen a round of applause? [applause] And our promise to all of our graduates from all four years when we have district-wide committees, we're going to call upon them and ask them if they want to participate. For example, we'll be creating a new CIP during the year next school year. All of these graduates and the previous graduates to be invited if they would like to join that committee. So, Madam President, that concludes my rather long uh super tense report today. >> Thank you very much. Uh next up, we have elementary spotlight. Sunset Valley Elementary is here this evening. Am I on now? Okay, perfect. We'll try that again. Good evening, everyone. My name is Rachel Flood and I'm in my sixth year of being principal at Sunset Valley and

I realize I'm a little bit biased, but I absolutely think it is the best place in the world. Um, I'm excited to be here and share a little bit of that with you tonight. This year, our theme is SVE, where legends roam. We are taking this year to celebrate the legendary impact that we have on one another. We thought we'd share some of that with you tonight for our spotlight. They say a person becomes a legend by leaving a lasting, unforgettable impression. And as you're about to see, we've got some pretty big legends roaming around Sunset Valley. Before we start the video, I want to preface that we have some smaller, softer voices in our video. So, we did include captions so that you don't miss a single of their impactful words. Um, but we

hope you enjoy our spotlight titled A Letter to a Legend. At [music] Sunset Valley Elementary, legends aren't found in history books. They walk our halls every day. >> [music] >> Hi. [music] Hi. We asked students, families, and teachers to write a letter to a staff member who is a true legend in their eyes. Here is what they had to say. >> A letter to a legend. Dear Miss Wilson, [music] you are a legendary because you are nice and you play with me. >> Dear Miss Flair, what makes you a legend is simple. You deal with all of us chaos in our room. You [music] are a teacher that makes me believe in myself. With without you, I would be sad and would not [music] be as confident in school. You taught me a lot last

year and you made me feel [music] really ready for fourth grade. You believe in me and that [music] made me believe that I could do hard things. >> I can tell [music] you by my day or anything and you are always proud of [music] me. You make me feel safe and I and like I can [music] come to you for anything. >> I admire so many things about you and not all of them occur [music] within these walls. When our kids were young, we went on many adventures together, [music] and I always admired your calm demeanor and high expectations. Those same qualities continue to shine in your classroom today, making you such [music] an effective and inspiring teacher. >> You made me feel comfortable and brave. >> I know you care about [music] me because

even when I mess around, you are always trying to pull [music] me through it. You never quit no matter how long it takes. Without [music] you, my life would be dead because you are a safe person that I can go to and [music] talk to about anything. You are someone who helps me when I am having a bad day. Every time I [music] need my time with you, I feel better. Imagine always being welcomed by a smiling face and a it's [music] good to see you. Imagine someone taking the time to learn your strengths and weaknesses just so they can help you grow. How about someone outside of your home that is the steady calm [music] in your everyday? Someone who celebrates your highs and sits with you in your lows. Someone that has faith

in you when you don't even have faith in yourself. Both of my children have been fortunate enough to [music] experience such legends at Sunset Valley. >> I love I know you [music] care about me cuz I can see it in your eyes. [music] When you look at me, I see what your heart is. If you were a superhero, [music] your superpower would be getting getting the villains to reconsider their high choices. >> If you were a superhero, you [music] would be a you would your superpower would be able to you [music] are supportive and your love could heal any person. >> You have made a lasting impact on both colleagues and students [music] alike and your influence continues to be felt in countless ways. There's not a [music] day that goes by that I don't

think about how beyond lucky we've been to have the most [music] brilliant teachers working with both our boys all these years. You have been nothing short of legendary in the life of my child or [music] children. Thank you for being legends at Sunset Valley. Thank you [music] for those kind words. >> Thank you. >> You make me cry. >> Thank you. I am a >> Thank you for helping me and [music] tears. Thank you. Oh my god. So sweet of you. That means so much to me. [music] So sweet of you. Thank you. You have the most amazing voice on the planet. See, I told you they're the best. Okay, I'm moving into volunteer of the year. Is that okay? I have the pleasure of introducing another legend that walks our halls. I would like

to introduce you to Miss Shella Presley, our Sunset Valley Volunteer of the Year. [applause] Okay, you can hold this while I talk about you. Okay, >> I know. Sorry. [laughter] Uh Shelley, you continue to give your time and heart to Sunset Valley and everyone in it. Your positive attitude and the smile you share are contagious throughout our building. You've spent countless hours supporting teachers, helping in the library, and working with students. Your contributions are endless, and you helped to make Sunset Valley the amazing place that it is. On behalf of everyone at Sunset Valley, we thank you for your dedication and unwavering support for our Jaguar family. Picture [applause] time. >> Okay. Okay, Lee Summit High School, good luck following that up. >> Good evening. There we go. All right. First request is maybe next

year we can make a flip. secondary goes first. Uh we're working on a video. Uh and then the football team got really successful and so we lost that time. So we'll get better at that. All right. Um all right. Uh all jokes aside, thank you for having us tonight to be the secondary spotlight. This is obviously an extremely exciting time to be a part of Lee Summon High School. We currently are in the middle of our fall musical which is currently taking place right now. Um, as I stand here before you, Mystic Pizza, um, is currently, uh, the production, um, I want to give a shout out to them. They were scheduled to be tomorrow night. Um, and so they did make a flip for us. Uh, and they are performing right now. They have

another performance on Saturday night and then a Sunday matinea. Additionally, I'd like to highlight the football team. Dr. Buck already mentioned that, but they did start the season 0 and4. They've persevered, great resilience, an amazing coaching staff, amazing players. Um, and I think we host uh probably one of the largest games that we've ever hosted at Lee Summon High School. The first time we've been this far since 1985. Um, so extremely extremely exciting time to be a part of Lee Summit High School. Uh, at this time I'd like to transition to our official spotlight. Uh, tonight it brings me great joy to highlight our truly exceptional program at Lee Summit High School, our library. The Lee 7 High School library is with without question the best I have ever been around and much of that

credit goes to the remarkable individuals that run it. Miss Jen Coleman and Miss Allison Donahe each have served as in the library for nearly a decade, continuing to push the envelope in finding innovative ways to support both our students and our staff. Please help me welcome Miss Coleman and Miss Donna. [applause] Well, first of all, we would just like to say thank you to the board for inviting us here tonight and thank you to Mr. Mucky for choosing to highlight the library. Um, and also we would love to acknowledge how fortunate we are to have undergone like the great renovation at Lee Summit High School that has now placed the library in the heart of the school and that has been awesome for us. Um, community and belonging are core values for our library department.

And at Lisa High School, we offer a variety of ways for students to get involved from simple things like coming to the library to answer the riddle of the day or the question of the week. They can join clubs obviously and other programming opportunities. But today we'd like to highlight um ReadAcross America Day which happens every March. And ReadAcross America Day is special because it connects our high school students with our elementary feeder schools. And so we have our book club students go to elementary schools to read stories to those kids in their classrooms and just to spread their love of reading. And um it gives our students a chance to encourage those kids to keep reading, to connect with them, and to serve their community also. And then another thing we're proud of is

the Lee Summit Community Read. And as you all know, Lisa Community Read is a K through 12 district initiative that's designed to bring all the buildings plus the community together um in a unified celebration of reading. Lee Summit High School gets to play a special role because we host the um culminating event and celebration at the end. Um but this program is really great because when elementary school students are reading the book in their classrooms and doing book related reading related activities with um other students in their class, we also have the older students who are getting the opportunity to read the book and then create activities for the younger students and then they come to the celebration when we all come together at the end and then they're leading those activities with the younger

kids. And so it just really brings everybody together and um last year organizations from all over the district plus the community come and join us for that event and it was great and we're excited to bring it back this year and our new book is going to be announced in January. Next, we'd like to briefly share some of our instructional focuses within our library program. Last school year, we were fortunate to lead over 400 lessons to support our building's curriculum and instruction. Our largest area of areas of instruction are research, information literacy, the ethical use of information and artificial intelligence and reading support. In the past five years, we've also used virtual reality technology to support curriculum and inquirybased learning initiatives. This year, students have used these headsets to explore Holocaust memorial sites, environmental biomes,

Renaissance art, and more. And finally, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the ways in which our entire staff supports a culture of literacy and lifelong learning. This is truly a partnership among all of us. Whether it is through growing together professionally, encouraging reading in the classroom, or modeling readers as leaders, our building educators and support staff foster a love of reading. One example was our staff reading challenge this past summer. 42 staff members participated, competing on teams to read and record a total of 691 books. Not only did this build community among our staff, but we've used this experience to continue to promote a culture of reading with our students. Thank you so much for your time and ongoing support of our library program. [applause] Finally, it is my honor to recognize

the Lee Summit High School volunteer of the year. This individual is a 1974 graduate. This individual was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013. And this individual and I started working together when I was 13 or 14 years old, uh, as he would call and ask me if I wanted to officiate LSJBA basketball games. So, our relationship goes back a few decades. Over 30 years ago, this individual began volunteering on the sidelines for Lee Summit High School football games as our head chain gang member. It is of great honor that I get to introduce our Lee Summit High School volunteer of the year, Mr. Scott Graham. [applause] Okay. Item 4.01, public comment. You may not speak to or interact in any way with any other person in the audience. When your name is called, go to the podium and clearly state your name and the organization you represent, if any. Lydiana Lewis, >> hi. Hello. Um, my name is Eliana Lewis and I am a student of Lee Summit North and also >> Can we get the timer to Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you. Go ahead. >> It's okay. Um, hi, my name is Eliana Lewis and I am here today to bring awareness of the uprising of Club America powered by TPUSA, also known as Turning Point Turning

Point USA. This club was founded by Charlie Kirk and Bill Montgomery and There are currently over 12,000 high schools in and out of the Missouri area that hosts Club America. This club is currently hosted in three high schools here in one of those high schools. When I heard that this club was established in my school, I was concerned. I understand that this club wants to give students a chance to express their values and ideas, which is very similar to TPUSA. On the USA website, they say that they want to honor their founders legacy. And when I read that, I had one thought. The legacy that they want to honor is carried by racist, homophobic, and misogynistic. And both have the same goal, which is to shape the young conservative minds of the future. The current

directors of club America, and it's hard to believe that they don't want to carry the same mission of honoring the legacy that's full. that stands with TP USA and agrees with further that agrees with further that agrees with that further suppresses minorities that already struggle and that makes me feel less. The club at my school is centered mostly around the sponsor of the club is a very polarizing figure and who's known in my school and because of the influence and reputation of this club, how student of the Summit North be sure that this club and its sponsors are continuing the harmful legacy that's stated in USA. Why have a club if it contains nothing more than veteran related activities named Club America knowing the history and knowing their affiliation? Does an affiliation with TPUSA stand

against everything the LSR7 district promises for students? At the end of the day, America exists. It's here. But what can be done to make sure this club isn't honoring a man who believed in who believe people like me and others who don't look like him don't belong? What can be done to make to make sure that oppression, competition between other clubs and other and lack of Thank you for your time, >> Brandon. True love. Hello everybody. Um, my name is Brandon Trulov. I am a junior also at Lee Summit North High School and I'm the president of the Black Student Union there. Um, yes, recently there has been the initiation of Club America at my school. Um, now in 2022, it was also initiated in Lee Summit West which caused a huge protest um, including

concerned students and Why were they concerned? Because of what the club stands for and its founder, Charlie Kirk. During the protest, um someone who was confirmed not to be Hello. Okay. Someone who was confirmed not to be affiliated with um the protest, flipped over a glass table, and shattered it. Now, Charlie Kirk took this vid. Somebody took a video. Charlie Cook took this video, posted it on Instagram out of context with the caption, I quote, "Insane leftist disrupts TPUSA meeting." Now, TPA uh TPUSA states that Charlie's passing marked the turning point for the movement he sparked. In the weeks that followed, more than 120,000 students reached out seeking to launch new high school and college chapters, determined to carry forward what he built. The last sentence of that is what I really want to focus

on. carry forward what he built. If I'm being honest, that concerns me. The same individual who said, quote, "If I see a black pilot, I'm gonna be like, boy, I hope he's qualified." is the same person who whose beliefs we want to carry forward. And it's not just him. Former TPUSA National Field Director Crystal Clanton sent text messages to another employee that said, quote, "I hate black people. Like, f them all." Dot dot dot. I hate blacks. Period. End of story. Period. And still, that's not the only employee that said some choice words. Current TPUSA Chief Creative Officer Benny Johnson started a TPUSA meeting by saying, quote, "Oh my god, I've never seen so many white people in one room. This is incredible." This leads me to my main concern. A club powered by the

organization that has the people and some more who have said all of these things on the executive board of said organization is now at my school. And in a school where I am the minority, we know LSR7 school district is anti-discriminatory and what the club is known for is in direct opposition to that. Thank you for your time. Okay. Item uh seven. Um this will be our consent agenda. Could I get a motion, please? Did I skip something? Oh, shoot. Well, I got I I guess I uh my apologies. I scrolled down too far. Excuse me. Okay. Items for decision. Uh could we approve the transfer of funds, please 6.01. >> Oh man, I'm like I'm not even on the same page here. Sorry about that. Holy cow. I moved my cursor and I I

just decided we're done. Okay, how about let's do our committee reports first. I think I was my bedtime or something. I don't know. >> All right. Board member Haley. >> Okay. I actually uh along with a bunch of the other board members, I attended the MSBA conference in Kansas City. That was a a fun event, very educational. Um I uh attended uh the finance committee meeting on Monday led by Dr. Herzog. Always informative and and we've got some financial things on the horizon that we're going to have to be dealing with. Um, I attended the grand opening of Hangar 2 at the airport. That was exciting. Uh, we have a a worldclass facility out there that we're we're a part of. And finally, I attended a fundraiser that was put on by the Lee Summit

High Trap team. And that about wraps it up for me today. >> Thank you very much, Dr. Nickens. >> Um, yes, it's been a busy uh month. I also attended the MSBA conference in Kansas City. I went to the AI workshop um and the board finance workshop prior to the conference. Those were um reminded me that I don't sit well um for long periods of time, but they were super informative. Um we had a meeting of teamly summit and a meeting of the CAC and also a policy committee meeting. Um, on the fun side, I got to go speak to a group of Boy Scouts from three of the elementary schools here in town about being an elected official. And I got to judge food truck competition at Le Summit North with Miss Wilson's class,

which was really a lot of fun. >> Thank you, board member Garrett. >> Thank you. Um I as well attended the MSBA um workshop or conference in Kansas City and um attended the October in October the elected officials day and so I got to hear a nice presentation uh put on by students there in the aerospace program. Uh let's see. Oh and then um with the LE I'm also on the Lee Summit Educational Foundation committee. I attended their board of directors meeting. Um, I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone that attended the uh, Race for the Future um, 5K run. We It was so successful, great turnout, and so I asked Dr. Buck, but it was 18,000 that that we netted that day. So very, very good to see the community

come out and support um, our schools. And then also with the um Lee Summit Cares, we have um a mayoral character breakfast coming up. So we look forward to that in a couple of months. And I attended the annual choose to include and apparent teachers meeting. I do sit on that committee. Um and was able to attend their Halloween trick-or-treating at both Great Beginning Early Education Centers. And also I attended the ribbon cutting for Hangar 2. and uh they have a great facility there. And that was it. >> Thank you very much, Dr. Johnson. >> Okay. I attended Team Lee Summit um for my committee. And I just want you guys to know that's a eight hour meeting, so I think it makes up for all the other ones that I'm not on. I'm just

going to put that out there. [laughter] But just a few things. Um in Teamly Summit, that's one of the places where we talk about like salary and compensation for our staff. And I think Dr. Buck did an excellent job of talking about how tax revenues impact what we do at the schools and um in our school district. So, it was very helpful to know and we also just we get feedback from our staff on in an anonymous survey and I just want people to know we do read that feedback. We look into it and we try to make improvements based on it. So, that's what we discussed in teamly summit. >> Thank you board member Dawson. Um, I uh also attended with board member Garrett the Lee Summit Cares uh board meeting and uh attended

their youth wellness event at Bernard Campbell Middle School that they hosted uh in early November. That was a great event and I hope um I hope the folks can go next year if you have any if you have any uh students here in the district, which I'm sure most of you watching probably do. Um, and uh just as uh board member Garrett said, uh the mayor's character breakfast is coming up January 15th. If you uh have never been to one, uh you might want to consider going. If you've already been to one, then please make sure you uh get your tickets for this year's. Uh it's a great time that the community gets together. Um and it also raises funds for Lee Summit Cares, which does uh great work in the community. Um, I also

attended the uh MSBA, the Missouri school board uh conference in Kansas City uh like my fellow board members and uh went to the uh finance training as well as a number of really great sessions. Uh learned a lot about um a couple different uh mental health ideas from a couple of the schools around Kansas City and uh St. Louis and several other uh good sessions. Um and in November went to the board policy meeting and uh we got through reviewing a number of uh policies uh annually and uh this past Monday went to the finance committee meeting and uh wanted to thank everyone who uh prepared uh for that and shared information with us on our finances and our projects and the things that we're going to be approving here in a few minutes. Uh,

thank you very much. And, uh, a couple fun things. I did, uh, do the food truck competition judging over at Lee Summit North. That was so exciting to see their business proposals. Uh, and then I also was able to be a judge for the first time at the Lee Summit West uh, debate tournament. And so that was really exciting to see some really talented students uh, competing in debate. So, >> thank you, Vice President Miller. >> Thank you. I also attended the MSBA fall annual conference with my fellow board members and as usual um you know conferences just provide so many opportunities for learning and connecting. So that's absolutely my favorite part. Um LSR7 as usual was well represented there. Um Dr. Shelton presented um did a presentation and also we had two of our

school nurses there presenting and that was an incredible presentation. Um I also um at the MSB conference um President Myers and I are the delegates for LSR7. So we attended the delegate assembly while there. Um I also attended the finance committee meeting and elected officials day. My fun stuff for the for the month would be the food truck. Um that was so much fun. And then I also attended um at West they had the BSU hosted a Friendsgiving and they invited the MSU, the Asian Student Union, and the Hispanic Student Union as well. And it they had a great turnout and it was so much fun to see all the togetherness and fun. So um that concludes my report. President Myers. >> All right. Excellent. Thank you very much. Um, so this this month, like

everyone else has already indicated, we got to attend the Missouri um, schoolboard association conference, which was here locally. And um, I also got to participate in the delegate assembly with Vice President Miller. But one of the things that the the the professional sessions are really really wonderful and you learn a lot of you learn a lot. But one of the things that comes out of it too is you get the opportunity for us to just in little groups just talk. Um because when we're here it's all business and it and and there's all kinds of, you know, rules. We can't just all go out and start jibber jabbering about whatever it is that we're going to do next month at the board. And so I I will be honest, one of the things that I

enjoyed the most about the conference was, you know, the opportunity to just sit and talk to a couple of board members, have lunch with a couple people, just visit. Um because we probably sounds funny, but we don't really do that. And so that was that was a nice um it was just a nice opportunity to do that. So thanks to everybody that that was around. Um, so I got to go to the parent academy, which uh was kind of funny to me at first that I was invited to go to the parent academy and I went to and I got to speak at the parent academy which was even better and it was so much fun. I I remember the things that I miss about not being in a classroom anymore. Um, so that was

great and there was a lot of people there. I was very very impressed by that. Um, we had the CAC meeting, um, which, um, I think we've already t we already kind of talked about that where the, um, the opportunity to figure out what we were going to do with the potential additional bond money. Um, that decision was finally settled. Um, let's see, uh, elected officials day. Um, got to, um, attend that event. And then um the uh business roundt met this week and it was an interesting dialogue in terms of getting some additional community input as to updating our portrait of a graduate, the things that the attributes that we would like our graduates to demonstrate. Um and um and then the other the just kind of the the rundown of okay, here's where

we are financially. This is the most current up-to-date picture to paint that that Dr. Buck and his team is working um diligently on to keep us all informed. So, I think that that is my um that is my month. Okay. I'm scared to touch my cursor, though, because I don't know where I'm going to end up on my list. Okay. All right. Now, we're ready for finance. Uh could we get a motion to approve the transfer of funds, please? I have moved to approve the transfer of $6,178,283.73 from the general fund to a special revenue fund. >> Second. >> All those in favor, please raise your right hand and say I. >> I. >> All right. Motion passes. Okay. Could I get a motion to approve the treasures report? [clears throat] >> I move to

approve the treasures report and the payment of the bills. and a second. >> Second. >> All those in favor, please raise your right hand and say, "I." >> I. >> All right. Motion passes. >> All right. Item 7 uh seven, our consent agenda. >> I move to approve the consent agenda items as presented. >> Second. All those in favor, please raise your right hand and say, "I." >> I. >> All right. Motion passes. Uh at the you'll find you have some items of information. A written report from Greenwood Elementary and a written report from Lisum North High School. Otherwise, I think this concludes our business for the month of November. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. Thank you. [snorts]
