009thomas is there any other reports this evening madam chair i have a team dallas city liaison report as of january 4th 2022 the civic center will be closed to the public until further notice uh the city will be having a planning commission meeting on january 19th at 7 00 pm the zoning boards of appeals will be meeting on january 19th at 7 30. the next regular uh city council meeting will be held on monday january 24th at 7pm if there are no other reports at this time we'll have a presentation from superintendent thank you mr hanky thank you president that works president daniels members of the board you have this presentation in front of you obviously we have it behind you too for the folks at home this is an update on our strategic plan

010one thing i do want to start with is just to remind and you know say the vision and mission statement in our portrait of a graduate that really is the center of our plan our vision statement is garfield heights city schools a premier education institution will be recognized throughout ohio as fully preparing students to be leaders equipped with real world skills to contribute to a global society our mission statement as the heart of the community garfield heights city schools fully prepares students to pursue their dreams and give back as engaged citizens and future leaders in our portrait of a graduate um again we're looking for our graduates to be leaders socially and emotionally we're aware excuse me equipped with real world skills and be career prepared so with that uh what i've prepared is a

011presentation on some of the things we've been working on this year uh based on the pillars of our plan uh that's all right we will also publish this plan to our website uh tomorrow if that's okay mr salute um so for teaching and learning the map data um nwea map is a benchmarking system we use in this district uh to figure out uh where our students are and how much they have grown and what we have done with these data this year is a couple of things first of all we have professional development and reports training okay i should say professional development regarding reports training excuse me because we want our educators to understand how to [Music] interpret the reports as they get on their students to enhance instructional development planning and also execution so

012we did that with our staff we we also what we did was we we've done a breakdown with the ohio state test correlation between that and map which will improve lesson planning we believe that math is very well correlated with the outcomes that our students will have on the ohio state testing so we we are we've done that and that has also gotten to the educators uh to improve lesson plan additionally our administrators and this is going to filter down to the buildings through the principles had value-added training um mr corey our our our data expert here uh is actually trained on the value added at a national level sas is the company that does value added for school districts uh he's received national training on that and that ties in with the ohio principal

013evaluation system and ohio teacher evaluation system and so we were all trained in a leadership meeting and that's going to be disseminated down another thing that's going on in teaching and learning that is uh very important because across our curricula we are a district that wants to be focused on literacy okay no matter if you're sitting in your mathematics class your social studies class or your language arts class we want literacy to be something that's there and what our ela teachers are doing are language arts teachers is they are doing a district-wide pd identifying power standards for improved lesson planning which is going to help us in our literacy efforts diversity and inclusion one of the things that just kicked off last week was we had focus groups around racial affinity groups uh these groups

014helped support and retain teachers of color uh ms hamilton our diversity uh consulting along with ms uh smooth wicks who uh the board approved her contract helped us with that uh had their kickoff um focus groups uh to make sure that they're kind of organizing these groups appropriately and what they want to focus on um this is uh not necessarily jermaine and garfield heights this these affinity groups are spreading throughout the united states in both public and private sector and we hope that helps us with our retention and support um as i informed the board we received a 200 000 grant from the united states department of education for the recruitment retention and promotion of teachers of color uh an update on where that grant is i am currently waiting on the esc to schedule

015a meeting about a budget about the budgets and where where exactly the money can be spent uh in terms of things uh and then we're gonna go from there we're going to be able to start drawing down on this grant in terms of support um in the spring we are working through the equity task force even though we haven't gotten those solid budget numbers yet we are going to be working through that task force to identify uh what we exactly want to focus on uh this and in fact i believe we're meeting this week or next week sorry i don't have a calendar in front of you uh the metropolitan um the metro cabsie which is uh the a coalition of black school educators uh we have an institutional membership uh to them uh ms

016king and i went to their i thought it was a wonderful program they had that they had a right before christmas we are partnering with them we are bringing in a program called black men teach they're going to be focusing on our high school male students of color just off of national and state and local statistics we need more male teachers of color in districts there's not a lot of them and so this program was developed by cabsie to support that uh also uh just just as a general uh way of recruitment uh as we don't have as many uh at this time of year teacher openings but we are running them through metro academy to try to get some recruiting going uh through them dr robert simmons is the president of metro council she

017is a an administrator in cleveland metropolitan schools and now their headquarters is in garfield heights they just moved here so we hope to have a very strong partnership with them moving forward wellness um this is a very broad topic and in light of covet is very very important to us um you know as as we've talked about we have a lot of outside agencies that provide counseling for us mental health partnerships we're working on some embedded health mental health help on a daily basis and we're also leveraging these partnerships to help our families as well let me skip the first one i apologize we also have partnered with three out or three outside agencies to provide after-school activities to our middle school and our uh elementary students uh queen i am which is focused on

018female students especially the middle school they're also headquartered here in garfield heights they're also going to help us at our high school uh through my com which i'll get to because i don't want to confuse things but there's two different things going on reading ram which is a program that helps kids with multimedia radio uh and video and audio production uh they are helping us at our middle school and uh let our breed very all these all these programs helped us this summer very successful programs and they're pretty much filled up so president dale's maybe coming to the border for some additional funds if possible because we've got a high need so which is a good thing uh you know the attendance has been very good at these programs uh and uh and especially and

019all the programs are great but one art breed did a great job of pivoting to um online when we've had when we closed those couple of days before uh christmas or excuse me winter break that they helped the kids there so that was that was really neat about um our award-winning pbis program we have been recognized by the state through all of our buildings and as a district we are now taking another step in that direction with the integration of mtss and desa uh which which just happened uh the training just happened on january 14th this is the one part piece of my presentation mr patton if you could please chime in on what those are so i don't uh mtss has multi-tiered support systems it is a way for our teachers to identify uh

020areas that students are struggling and thessa is another way for us to we used to use a system called savers this is a new tool through a company that we are a program that we have in our district called branching minds it allows us to give our students to give them a self-assessment and also allow our teachers to identify some supports for our students whether it's academic social emotionally it's another tool for us and then it actually gives in branching minds uh strategies and toolboxes for the teachers to utilize to help with students that may be struggling in the classroom so i've got another tool so the teachers have been treating that this is going to be integrated through our kindergarten through our fifth eighth grade students um in our the last one i wanted

021to highlight here collaborative classroom so um as we've gone throughout this year we've seen uh you know social emotional issues have been at the forefront and uh so we carved out time at the end of the day and we brought in a program called collaborative classroom that deals with social and emotional health uh already the data after a couple of months is showing us that referrals for especially disrespect and anger and things of that have gone down so collaborative classroom is helping all of our educators are working through this program within the uh end of the day at um lesson planning it's the the system does it for you it's really not too much of an extra lift for the teachers and it's really showing some some promising data i do want to point out

022some ongoing things that have always been i think part of wellness as we've said at our board me student activities are so robust here at this school on the middle especially organized ones at the middle and high school uh sports choir band student clubs and activities newspaper chess club drama club there's something for every every student to be interested in and throughout my career here in garfield heights i think that's really been a highlight of this district and something we really should champion i mean the the the amount of um and over half of the student body at the high school involved in something which is great so and additionally as as ms thomas as our cdcc rep goes there's a whole other layer there where they can get involved with things i put this

023under wellness you can kind of switch between that and the diversity inclusion pillar uh project mosaic which is our our group at our in our high school that meets about issues in the school diversity issues also being an upstander making sure that students are are being very positive uh has been re-established uh they are meeting regularly now uh they will be at some point this year in front of the board of education what i forgot to put on this is our first ring leadership academy is focusing on students this year we have five students that are participating in that meeting monthly with other districts around the first string um and that's going very well uh ms kiara kimbrough cross are one of our third grade teachers uh she kind of she was able to step

024out of the box a little bit and help help our high school kids because their advisor to this and they're really doing a great job i met with them had lunch with them uh last month and they're they're just a group of kids it's just wonderful to see if they're able to not only uh some of the things they're doing leadership but also network with with students across the region facilities and learning resources mr saluk and i and mr patton as well have been uh in the midst of of a number of things uh and mrs bailey number of things in terms of this pillar we had then design architecture architecture firm do a middle school and athletic complex assessment uh the ohio facilities construction commission is the commission that that schools go to to

025receive funds or also permission to build new facilities uh based on debt limitations i think i'm gonna say that right mr solution um mr seleuce and i uh met with the ofcc the architecture firm and attorneys to apply for a program called alph and mr saluki can you tell me what that stands for um yes expedited uh local partnership so the expedited local partnership will allow the board of education if if if we go this route to ask the community for funds through a bond issue but we needed to go through that process first we have met with them additionally connect which is our basically our i mean not only are our internet pipe but they're also the backbone of our fiscal system um you know and various other systems here in this this district

026uh they also serve other districts uh they're they're a non-profit that's affiliated with the education service center uh they have a new director director named jody houseman and she brought in uh an itc audit so this is a good thing this is really looking at where we are with all of our hardware and software and where we want to be and they're going to help us with that uh this this is um a new initiative they have uh and i didn't see much downside they participated in it i think this is going to be a great a great thing for us because we're going to be able to map out everything pretty clearly and with that mapping out mrs bailey has a comprehensive replacement plan we obviously have a lot of devices now and she

027has a plan that sets out when they reach end of life where the funding streams are that we can get new devices and what needs to be replaced and one thing that her department especially her has done is become a very very good uh uh she's become very very good at e-rating which we get massive rebates up to 80-90 uh for equipment and there's a lot of like electronic plumbing we don't think about right and it's expensive stuff that has to be fixed network switches uh power uh backups that have to be for for our servers servers themselves which you never see they're locked in closets but without them we would uh not be in a good good space so we're going through that process as well um hopefully with facilities and resources um as

028we go forward mr sleuk and i'll be updating the board on where we are with things and strategically where we want to go so i wanted to give the board a brief update on the on excuse me apologies i forgot it forgot a pillar community and family engagement uh the family engagement committee uh uh mrs wilson has done monthly meetings um i apologize i think uh one of the pages got lost no i didn't it's right here i got it uh we have monthly family engagement meetings uh happening in buildings she's also come up with a kinship care connections meeting and this helps with family members that aren't necessarily parents and giving them resources and ways to help their students our stay in the game initiative through the browns we have monthly meetings that mr

029patton organizes ms wilson mr corey is on this committee to look at attendance data um before the last round of the surge of covet our attendance was starting to improve uh their students are really buying into this program uh and it's really helping we and we also got some some really fantastic things to give away to families uh uh you know including browns tickets uh uh for them so that that's been great um the my com club collaboration um ms wilson has taken that on uh headed up this is our we're already seeing fruits of this uh they're going to fund queen i am to come into our high school so that's wonderful and we're moving forward uh as a community really uh to have my come as a partner here with the district again

030mental health agencies supporting families and um we had our first hispanic resource night for for hispanic families there are families that are first generation families and families that are immigrants and we wanted to make sure that they had resources from agencies and partners throughout the the uh region so that that was wonderful we had great attendance at that uh and um you know we're looking forward to that expansion with that questions mr thank you i do have um can we maybe add our next work session um get an overview of student growth from fall to winter um just to get an idea of where how our students are trending i know you know we have to kind of take a little grain of salt because of um some of the challenges we've had due to

031the pandemic but just beginning to see that growth and if there are any areas that we've seen some tremendous improvement in or any losses yeah we could we could look at a map um i don't know i don't i'm not quite certain that that measure i didn't believe it measures it though this is right when you want to chime in on that will that show something from following or okay yeah um but we're not testing through the floor so february fourth and i okay will our obsession be the 14th okay well maybe then in in march yeah yeah i just want to make sure we have enough time to pull it off okay yes um i do want to uh indicate that i have heard from a couple of staff members that they do appreciate

032the um the affinity groups that's good to hear that's wonderful because we just started that yeah so i've actually i've heard that you know it's appreciated so i wanted to share that um also if you can um keep us posted on the uh grant that we see from the us department of education because we're moving into um recruitment season if you will and so i want to make sure that um in addition to our metro capsi taxi working with them with our um job postings that we're um looking at how we can retain our current current teachers of color and also where you can continue to broaden our network and you you answered my question but i want to um ask in addition you talked about the collaborative classrooms and then there's less referrals i

033know um that through our presentations um there we were enhancing pbis and um including ntss and vadesa which is awesome um have we seen referrals decrease in the high school or just the uh middle school and elementary schools have we are trending down everywhere in justin uh the high school um again mr penn probably has a better handle on on on the data but we are working through a process i believe to look at a uh we review monthly the data's from all the buildings um december was a short month anyways our numbers did decrease collaborative classroom was a program designed to brought in for specifically our midschool students and to focusing on with them with their disrespect and you know you know that that was really the intentionality of that program and it was

034brought in um again starting the second quarter to really focus on that because that's what we saw the beginning of the need of that especially when as students feedback from being down for candidate gear so that has been a focus for of that but overall all the buildings we are continuing to look at that um again monthly with the assistant principles um to go over that and uh something new this year what we're doing is that we are um sharing that information out district-wide it's a draw office here so that all the governings are hearing what that message is and what's going on district-wide so that we're able to universally um have strategies in place to help support and learn what's going on uh district-wide to help support what's happening in all the buildings okay

035yeah i was just asking because i know at the beginning of the year when we're seeing an increase in referrals and student behaviors and i know that intentionally at all of our buildings we were doing something a little different to um support our scholars and i just wanted to know if we're starting to see you know i know it's not going to be a big turn the shift down but just seeing that we're beginning to start to turn down we're seeing less major and since high school we've put some things in the face there that were specific to the high school in our meetings we talked about middle school which is what makes it so fantastic and that's what they needed was a lot of that like building a community having discussions with one another

036sitting together and learning together and the high school had some different issues and so in our meeting monthly meetings we just talked about some different strategies and some things to sort of help them along so they have put those things into place and we've seen some improvement for sure and it should be awesome because as we continue with collaborative classrooms those students are going to have those skills when they hit high school yes and that common vocabulary so i'm looking forward to um seeing how that works out and so i think that's it for me thank you i have actually um opportunity to go in to the middle school and stand on one of those collaborative classroom sessions and it was very impressive um the engagement that the students had with one another and just

037that social emotional piece and then the other piece that i took away from there was it was a really good opportunity for the students to bond with their teacher differently because it was like the teacher led the class but she also participated she shared her experiences with the students so it was a really good way not just to build the students relationships with one another but also the adults and the um in the building and so it was just and they were talking about anger the day that i went and they were sharing things that make them angry and how they handle it and the educator is very transparent on even her being an adult and having those feelings and how she handles it and then they had like a meditation session where she had

038areas in her classroom and they had calming music and the children actually participated i was actually in a sixth grade class i believe and so i didn't even know they were sixth graders in that environment and that's how impressive and how engaged and um i'm just looking for i'm not surprised that the referrals are trending down and the culture of the middle school is changing so i just wanted to share with the board my first hand experience on um watching and i actually participated with the class in that on session two and it was it's as much it is a value um to our district to have that um in our middle school do you want to have another question thomas yeah just a few questions hispanic night i really really like that was it

039in person or was it virtual that one was in person um we were able to do it william foster um and in fact i i went and um um lately mr patton stopped by and the administrators there and dr dupree and uh ms wilson organized it um and funnily enough i mean like i was kind of stopping by and like there were about four or five two or three families there and apparently they got up to about 10 families i think so that was really important i think we really you know it's one of those things that you know you have to be cognizant of that you know you have a situation where we have resources here in northeast ohio for all kinds of things and it really helped and then my second question um

040the itc audit um are those results something that could be briefly shared with before yeah we're we we're just participating in this now oh yeah yeah i'm sorry this is this is this is an issue just getting started absolutely we will are there any other questions i just have one small question um when it goes to student wellness and the after school um that we have are we following um just student outcomes that's participated in these after-school programs are you seeing an improvement um in their academics they social emotional are we seeing them more engaged like the [Music] the concepts that the after school program present that they're going to do in the student just want to know are we going to follow the data to see if we're actually seeing those translated in the

041classroom and supporting the students academically and i think it's a board of education just knowing that that data's being generated that helps us to um you know understand the importance of further funding how we need to expand those wellness or is it actually having the impact in the classroom yeah right so as i kind of briefly mentioned kind of uh is it if i come to the board well yes yes we will but especially if i come to the board for extra funding i want to see where the outcomes are so yes thank you those outcomes could also help us um go for outside funding and grants um to support the social emotional well-being um thank you thank you so much for this presentation and thanks to everyone in the district that's putting on the

042hard work to ensure that our students are successful and that the barcelona city school district is a premier educational institution in ohio so thank you guys for your hard work thanks president that makes a good point you know we have 500 plus employees here right everybody has a hand in this i do this report but um you know everybody from top down and bottom up so and they're working hard they're doing a good job so thank you is [Music] thank you madam president uh i thank everyone in the griffith lake city schools community for their flexibility and patience of our school family continue to mask up through april 1 2022 the garfield light city schools will continue to monitor data and is cognizant of trends going on all around us and we'll make the most

043important policy and operational changes when needed thank you for all your help and support during these unprecedented times i'd like to thank uh alumnus uh and also um uh one of our one of our consultants stan lepinsky uh who is helping to bring life back into our alumni organization by forming the garfield heights education foundation before too long those who are alumni should begin to see web outreach social media and even hard copy letters when you do see these materials vanilla please know that it's part of a coordinated effort to begin assembling our faithful bulldog alumni who are some of the strongest most loyal alumni in northeast ohio there's more to come on this important outreach in the future this education foundation will be that it will be geared toward education finally yesterday was dr

044martin luther king jr day and i can think of no better time with no better reason no better board of education who have made such valuable strides in the areas of diversity equity and inclusion to honor the memory of this foremost icon and the respectful fight for civil rights in our nation if if ever there is a place where the ongoing determination for freedom and equality for all is championed is in the garfield heights city school district with leadership emanating from a board of education such as the one we have following the momentous example set so long ago memorialized with this holiday contribute to dr martin luther king jr president daniel that concludes my report thank you uh thank you madam president uh i would like to take this opportunity to honor our very devoted

045board of education during the month of january as the entire state of ohio recognizes our school district public service excuse me public servants during board recognition month the individuals who comprise the garfield head city schools board of education have come together to form a powerful team assembled in the name of advancing our school district as the valuable liaisons between our administrative team and community our board of education has demonstrated great leadership to redirect the schools according to a new strategic plan develop a new mission for our district and the vision for the future they have outlined our key objectives and along with community feedback have developed the goals and action steps to achieve them going forward on behalf of everyone in the garfield heights city schools i thank our board of education members and ask

046everyone to join me in honoring them with a round of applause as a token of our appreciation please accept these certificates honoring your commitment to the garfield heights city schools if the board doesn't might hold them up business is taking some film for us uh and we'd like to thank you all once again thank you the next item in my calendar is remarks from the public department is my next item on our agenda is the report and recommendations of the treasurer can i have moving away tonight in a second second and is there any discussion anything you'd like to show this local regarding well these are the standard reports um you'll notice though there was the uh so it kind of got us over the hump even though we did receive some money from the

047state um for our grants and you'll see that on one of the tabs too and including the yes sir but that was kind of scary i think we received that late with the payroll coming up we just couldn't take that chance that we weren't getting it so that was like a um just having something to support and then back us up just in case that happened so um we have that there it'll be sitting there and we'll just uh keep going and pay it back in march thank you mr smith can i roll call please mr jubie yes miss king yes ms morrison yes miss thomas yeah this is daniel yes can i have a motion to approve personality in the islands 11.1 11 41-17 a second second and is there any discussion on items

04811.1 11.1 i would like to thank miss jackson for 23 years of experience with that district he did a great job mrs saxton has spent more than 35 years as a public educator serving uh cleveland metropolitan school district and then our school district that she is retiring at the end of the month and she's done a fantastic job thank you yes absolutely we'd be thankful for our service to this district and public education judicial will in her transition madam president yes um i have a question um on 16.4 the lcc mlu our um with providing um ccp services to our scholars um lccc but they still have the opportunity to take classes at csu and tricy this is just adding an additional um college to our choices yes all right thank you i did have

049a question regarding that one two so do this given the opportunity to go there or is already seemed like they're going to be coming into our bridge for providing courses sure we actually have a teacher in the building who teaches a course through learning community college okay it's an english course okay it'll just be that workforce so that's the one that we're offering on campus but students do have the opportunity to go there as well it's a little bit if they did something remote they certainly are walking through and then i also talked about um building two pathways so there'll be one where scholars could earn 15 credits and another that they can earn 30 credits so are those pathways um going to be more of a general education pathway as opposed to an accounting
