foreign meeting to order Mrs Peterson do we have any requests for public participation thank you very none we will move on to the approval of our consent agenda do I hear a motion Madam president Mrs Schwartz I move to approve the consent agenda as presented thank you do I hear a second I'll second the second prime minister seeks one thing I would like to mention in this is the last item the students staff Educators recognitions if you haven't had time to read that take a few minutes it's really neat to see that it's amazing just reading through that the number of recognitions in its every area from custodian cafeteria staff even officer Peters there were some great recognitions in there so it was great to see that so you have a motion and a second
all those in favor please say aye aye all those opposed say name motion carries now for the approval of our agenda do I hear a motion Madam president Mrs Schwartz I move to approve the agenda as presented thank you Dwight your second I will second second by Mr Wilkie any discussion and those hearing none all those in favor say aye all those opposed a motion carries we are now on the superintendent's report Dr Luke McClure is yours thank you madam president a couple items one next Monday the 16th we have a full day PD principles and uh Mrs Catherine other administrators have been working on that in the elementary we'll be working on dibble's data training and the use of that Dibbles for interventions essentially continuing much to support our board goal our first board
goal of increasing third grade reading scores Specialists will have collaboration time as in the elementary as hard for PE teachers and music teachers sometimes to get together during the regular day as they have to travel and schedules don't align DMS and DHS work on discipline learning so as an AG teacher I taught reading but I had to learn how to teach reading within my disciplinary so they'll be working on on that with some of our coaches there's some curriculum review processes going on in math and then there also be time for collaborative work on plc's and RTI which again is supporting all three of our board goals do you want to talk about a survey that um is trustum and myself sent out on December 22nd just requesting information from families and certified staff on
the effectiveness of virtual days and then the preference I think it's fair to say that snowstorms aren't perfect no matter what whether it's a virtual day a snow day or a makeup day seems like it's just challenging to to make that learning up but we did have a majority of stakeholders both families support the use of that virtual day uh and then we also had a majority of certified teachers support virtual learning the virtual learning was split along in the certified staff though half of them were great with virtual day half of them thought we should also utilize the grace days worked with cabinet on looking at that data we do believe when we survey people we want to know what they think and we use that to make decisions I will be moving forward
with continuing to use Virtual days the way we have which is set out in board policy we do have enough minutes where we could provide Grace days where we wouldn't have to make up that time I think it's the educator in me that always wants to make sure we can maximize learning so we'll try and use Virtual days when we can but scenarios such as the last one I think we found ourselves in at the end of three days it just got hard to do virtual learning you got to think of that that virtual learning that first day is really probably a continuation of the class and I think by the third day there were some people getting tired both second grade kids probably and and high school teachers are all teachers so when necessary
when we have prolonged periods of bad storms or something happens in the building we'll consider gray stays and then also scenarios that we can't plan for so let's say we have fluke storm and it comes in and we have to cancel school tomorrow morning at 6 a.m we'd use Grace days because we probably wouldn't be prepared for a virtual day at that moment but people thought we are getting better at what we're doing too and I think the word grace is important in that hopefully families have Grace for our teachers not everyone's an expert online teacher and hopefully teachers have Grace for our students it's not all families sometimes can make those things work so calendar committee meets again on the 12th we have two calendars that we're looking at and hopefully by February we'll
have a recommendation it is the board that adopts the calendar so that's all I have for a superintendents report okay thank you any questions for Dr lewton okay hearing none we will move on to our business topics and we will start with our budget input and development committee update just a real quick update um at the last meeting we had I think we did share that building C on the north campus we don't have the funds some of those funds are tied up in the Federal Reserve right now 3.3 million dollars that we'd like to utilize for building C I brought some options to the board just to consider that's my job is to bring you guys options and the committee met looked at stuff looked at finances looked at different revenues expenditures and really
have decided before we investigate anything I think that we're going to play the conservative game and and wait for that Federal money or there are some bills Ian brought forth in the legislature that might help Fast Track some of that money or supplant that money so we're just going to wait and see what the hopefully the treasury Department gets us that 3.3 million for now and we'll just continue uh Mr Anderson's doing a great job working on building a and b now but we'll have to wait for building C which probably is going to push that building opening off to the following year so item on here is our board goals and with that we have I believe Mr Anderson Miss Coleman welcome thank you so I'm JC collum I'm here to give an update
on where we are at with our goal 3.2 the goal three is that the school district will increase the percentage of students who are Choice ready from 53.4 percent in the spring of 2022 to 78.4 percent in the spring of 2027. um specifically the part that I work with on this goal is our work based learning students and the experiences that we have for work based learning in the high school um so this specific goal is to increase our work-based learning from seven percent in the spring of 2022 to 25 of the senior class having some sort of work based learning experience by the spring of 2027. I've updated our data here for the spring our goal was to have 10 percent by the spring of 2023 10 of senior class involved in a work-based
learning experience we have surpassed that for the spring we are currently at 12 percent of our students are set to start their work based learning experience next week when the spring semester starts right now we're sitting at 25 seniors who are have a finalized placement I did put a little highlight in blue there I'm still working on finalizing a few others so I didn't put that in our final number but I would assume that number would increase to maybe about 30 by the end of the week so we're going to have about 25 to 30 students placed within the local community it's really exciting to see the students who have done it in the fall and how they've I guess progressed throughout their experience and continue on through the spring um so a couple of
the ways that we've been going about increasing our student numbers is by promoting this more with our businesses and organizations within the local Dickinson Community I feel like that's kind of the biggest push that we're going for right now a lot of businesses don't know about what work based learning is or never had an intern with their business or organization before so kind of walking them through that process is something that I've been really focusing on I guess this semester we've also had the academy Expo in December for DHS we had a lot of local representation from different Industries students can mingle around with the businesses and kind of learn more about what opportunities there are within internships and work-based learning programs there we're also meeting with I'm also meeting with counselors teachers to learn
more about some student recommendations that they might have or if they see students in their class that might be a good fit for a work-based learning experience I know just within the past month I've had a lot of students just reach out via email or phone hey I've heard about this internship program or this work based learning what is this so I know that it's getting around a student's word of mouth as well which is exciting and I think it'll continue to grow from this point forward another thing that I wanted to mention I didn't put it on this I thought about it on my way over but the state is also has implemented a work-based learning program within the ru ready that system that DPS uses um so hopefully I'm hoping that we can
roll that out to more employers as well as students employers can just post if they have an opportunity they can just post it on that are you ready website and students can kind of apply to it like they would a job it would still go through me I still have to approve it but that's kind of something else that we're going to start using to promote more based learning um so all in all our goal is to have 25 of the senior class involved um we're going to continue to push students uh for these amazing opportunities but as of now we are on track with where our goals are I hope that we can hit at least that 14 by the spring of 2024. okay that was a whole lot of information what kind of
questions do you have thank you any questions yeah I would like to I know this will be quick I would like to give you and Mr Anderson credit for the Academy Expo I've heard great feedback in the community as far as the companies that were a part of that that participated and I have to say the high school kids uh Rivera had a booth there and we had a blast with them they had a lot of fun a time but I think that Bingo that game that you guys added this year really helped and I think that's what really the engagement was higher this year so I was really impressed with that the other comic questions okay I would have a question all right JC could you talk a little bit I would imagine the
amount of work um up front in something like this um it's one of those things where it's a lot of work up front I would guess and then later on you're gonna probably start to see how things happen so just talk a little bit about like what is it if you were to take my son and you're going to put him in a whatever construction class or construction experience how many hours do you have into Tom Luton oh um it depends on the industry that they're wanting to go into I think some Industries are really quick like yeah let's make it happen and then others it's not the same I guess pace so um on the student front it students have to apply for the program um they have to have positive recommending teachers so
once they have applied I go through their application make sure that they've had relevant class work they have to have at least one credit let's say Tom was wanting to do something in Cabinetry he has to have at least one credit with construction science he has to have positive recommending teachers so I go around and talk to each teacher that they list as their recommended teachers and then that's when I start working with the student what time of day are we going to be able to do your workplace experience and then we should try to find a local employer that might have be a good fit for them I don't know I guess the amount of hours it kind of depends like I said on the industry some are real quick to get back and
not so much with others um but it's been really fun to see the different types of students that have applied we actually have of a student who was supposed to be an early grad and instead of graduating early I guess this would be her last week she's going to come back for the spring and do a work based learning experience with us at West Dakota vet as a vet tech so that's really exciting um but yeah I guess it is a lot on The Upfront but then once they're placed it's it's pretty seamless and students seem to like that so just real quick are the workplace experiences are any of them paid experiences yes I would say about half I would say it's about half and half I have half of the students who are
paid and the other half are not it is up to the discretion of the employer most of the ones that aren't being paid are um in the health industry Fields I would say thank you yes thank you we will now move on to our board business topics the first item on the agenda is our board evaluation progress tracker implementing our B legendary board leadership program before well we will I'll actually call for no motion Madam president Mr seats I moved to approve the North Dakota be legendary Dickinson Public School Board of leadership framework quarterly progress tracker for the fourth quarter 2022 as presented Mr cease do we here second I'll second that second by Mr Schwartz and then we will read Mr or Dr Luton is there anything you would like to add I would
just add the work that you guys uh did at the board workshops is surrounding us so the data uh the artifacts all those items that went into are we doing the right work are literally around us still so left that up so the public could know that we're authentically doing that work and then what I would like to do is for each of these objectives we have as a board we evaluated ourselves as far as we rated where we were at in each of these so objective one and two uh Jason or Mr rotakowski and Mr seeks were the ones who took time to evaluate our board in these areas and with that I have trying to see what we rated ourselves on that one this one was the board has adopted student outcome goals
the board has adopted goal progress measures aligned to each student outcome we were confident the board was proficient on the two goals the board is also starting the process to check boxes in the advanced category the next step in this one would be to share the board's vision and student outcome goals with the students and community objective three was Mrs Schwartz we uh and Mr Wilkie with objective three and four objective three the board had not completed a self-evaluation before this month therefore the board could not move past the novice level the board has requested superintendent Luton formalize his implementation plan and share it with the board objective four Mr Wilkie determined the board is at the advanced level in this area the board receives information for the board meetings and its Workshop to build
a meeting agenda the material the Board needs to take action on is posted three days in advance of the board meetings over the past one and a half years the board has been reviewing policies delegated to the board category and objectives five and six I rated those and I felt the board was proficient in objective number five Additionally the board is able to check out some boxes in the advanced category similar to objective one the students need to meet made aware of the guard rails and what the board is trying to accomplish for objective six also similar to objective one and five the Board needs to have a community engagement to move forward therefore the board is below the novice level or at the does not meet level in objective six so I think what
