001say tom ken i'm going to hear me yep he just posted a chat message hey tom we can't hear anything on our on the zoom call hey garrett what are those two bottles on your uh right hand shoulder those are pepsi bottles from russia oh okay i would not drink them i got them i think they came up back with me for in 1988 so yeah you have no idea what's in them well it's pepsi i just wouldn't drink them everyone can hear you when you're talking but we're viewed until the meeting starts rick can you hear us yeah i can hear you loud and clear okay great are you do you think you're able to leave the meeting or do you want neil to do it right here i think i can do it

002i just i i may not be able to see people raising their hands so if uh neil can just call him out that would be great so you're gonna co-lead the meeting oh am i so he's gonna he's gonna run the meeting and then if uh you would help out with like if someone raises a hand or something if you could help out with that piece of it he said he thinks he can do it okay i don't know there's a first song for everything so let's just go i feel like it's odds [Laughter] i'm going to go ahead and call the dresden school board meeting to order at 7 35 does anyone have any uh additions or things to remove or reorder on our agenda tonight um did we wanna hang on one second

003rick did you want to move that up in the agenda this evening quality indicators whatever we have a call there can it just move as close to the top as possible yep so rick can we move um its item 5d annual report hhs profile up earlier in the agenda this evening sure uh we'll make it uh 5a okay um actually it's a report so why don't we move it up to 4a for [Laughter] she can go right after so at this point uh uh i'll give the members of the public three minutes to comment on items on the agenda we uh respectfully ask members of the public to state their name and address before commenting on agenda topics does anyone have any comments none in the room right great so we're moving on to the

004new 4a annual report hanover high school profile good evening i'm tom eberhardt i'm the director of counseling at the high school this is my first year in the position of my sixth year at hanover and i've been asked to get the quality indicator report in terms of using the hanover high school profile to walk through a couple of talking points this year there are 198 students in the class of 2022 a fact not included on the profile but many of you may know november 1st is a big date for many of our seniors applying to college for both non-binding early action and finding early decision deadlines noted on the profile 92 of the class of are now attending or deferred and are scheduled to attend four-year colleges covent has changed the landscape of not only

005college and college enrollments but also of standardized testing in many ways there are many students starting in the spring of 2020 and continuing through now who have had difficulty accessing testing due to covet as a result many colleges have moved to becoming test optional some will remain test optional temporarily and some have changed their policy to remain test optional moving forward moving beyond the profile and looking at another way of addressing quality indicators as a high school we administered the youth risk behavior survey to our students every two years most recently last week on october 19th here are a few data points from when the survey was administered in 2019 the 2019 yrbs responses illustrate that when asked about behaviors in the past 30 days 98 of hanover high school students have not smoked cigarettes

006and 88 of students have never smoked cigarettes 82 percent of hanover high students have not used an electronic paper product and 57 percent of students have never used an electronic paper product 80 percent of hanover high students have not used marijuana and 68 of students have never used marijuana 66 percent of students have not consumed alcohol and 48 of students have never consumed alcohol statistics from a high school profile can be important and highlight a certain kind of quality i also think it can be helpful to share some numbers from the yrbs in 2019 which can also illustrate quality as it relates to student behaviors of the high school moving forward we'd love to hear from the board in terms of what's actually important or helpful to hear or learn about when the quality indicator

007report is presented thank you for your time thank you tom um so this is rick the chair i know that the survey you are looking at dangerous substances have we done a survey with regards to mental health or behavioral health issues yeah the yrbs is pretty comprehensive and it covers everything from wearing seat belts to trusted adults in the building to some of the stats that i shared it's pretty pretty informative and helpful survey that looks at how our students respond compared to other students in the state as well so i'd love to be able to see the details i'd like to understand the stress levels and depression and anxiety and suicidal ideation that uh our population may have yeah and the so i can send 2019 okay board that's the good and the bad

008is that it's every two years and so what i just read was representing fall of 2019 and what students took last week will be more indicative of maybe what's happening as a fallout of the pandemic but we won't get that for another two years no it it gets released usually in the spring i want to say okay so but i can hopefully yeah maybe we can maybe we can have you come back in the spring and give us an update if you get the data okay so uh anyone else have any questions for tom i can't see any hands so neil i've got my hand up anyone else other than neil [Laughter] that's where this is working for me go ahead neil have we um in looking at the 2019 yrbs data have we disaggregated

009that data say for example by race ethnicity lgbtq status at the local level not that i'm aware of can we also don't know easy to check if we can but i don't think so is my initial response okay it's all and i said i don't think so simply because when it happens it's all in the past number of years electronics so kids are given a card with a code and a website and they do it in an effort to ask them to respond as honestly openly truthfully as possible yeah so i know so i have looked at the data at the vermont state level and it is captured that way at the state level how would they do that though um because i think that data is probably self-reported in the survey self-reported yes so

010i i was curious i know the data exists i'm sorry i know it exists at the state level i just wasn't sure whether or not the school got that data in in our local results i don't know it goes to chris seibel initially he oversees it he administers it so i can check with them and then we can check with the person at the state level to find out yeah um and i just mentioned it too because it would be extremely helpful um for some of the work that we're doing on the equity committee to have access to that de-identified data if possible anyone else got another question from kevin you can get that from getting it historically as well so you can look at trends and we make it more useful not just looking

011at 2019 previous years as well yeah something that compared to observation from the public hi nancy carter um we just do it so folks at home can hear you yes yes no i totally understand hi nancy carter um parent of three hanover high graduates and neil while the information would be important to your committee i would be extremely surprised if you could get that data i know that my children and all of their contemporaries were willing to participate only if there were no identifying characteristics whatsoever otherwise they said i'm putting in the trash because i'm going to be honest about everything i've done the past you know six months or whatever but not if the board of education no matter how wonderful you folks are are going to do anything with that even with without

012their their names attached it's just tough from the perspective of a 16 year old thank you you're welcome anyone else uh council rep kate sorry kate yeah i can't i'm like channeling rick johnson [Laughter] go ahead kate thank you i just wanted to add to that and say that from a student perspective um we took this in advisories and you do self report like race um sexuality things like that um and it's an anonymous survey but since there are so few people of color here um people of color were less likely to identify their race and instead just said like white because they felt it would be easier to identify them if they gauge their race thank you anyone else we good neil i think we're good thank you kate you're up for a report

013on the council thank you um okay so in the past month um council passed a motion to fund a driver's ed scholarship since we do not have a driver's life class at this school um so we allocated a few thousand dollars towards that um and i think it is already being put to use we also allocated money to buy two new weber grills from um this home assistant town because our last one was old and broken and a lot of clubs and activities use the grill as kind of a common place to come together so we've done that and the biggest thing we've done recently is continue with the mascot um we voted our voting opened last friday um to the students and staff of the high um and i think it is going to

014close this friday there are around 30-ish choices it's a san francisco um select ranked based voting system and council is planning to approve whatever mascot has been ranked highest this coming wednesday somewhat tomorrow the week after and then i believe announce it to school the following friday um thank you uh any questions for kate uh from lisa um yeah i just was wondering um do you know how many people have voted already i mean are people participating i i'm not sure but we did them in advisory normal and not third which increases and there's been a lot of talk around the school so i think most people but there's a scheduling meeting either i was told by nancy that i produced myself as the council moderator jeffrey i am the council exec [Laughter] anyways i

015talked to probably patel he's one of the co-chairs and he assured me because this was a question that came up in council what number of people have to vote if we're talking about students and staff to make it a legitimate qualifying vote and it was more than half and he assured me that we had already reached that a couple days after it went to advisory so wow thank you any other questions for kate nothing in the room right oh sorry one more um if you have it great if you don't it's okay um just what are the short lists of those that are voting just so folks at home can play along um yeah sure the like different options okay we have within each option we have a few drawings but the main ones um

016we have bears hawks huskies trailblazers and just maroon crush and each design has about three or four different designs that could be voted on anyone else you're good thank you kate uh so we're going to move to rms principles report is principal boyle i'm here i'll go through just uh very quickly we we have i think this week uh the school as a whole has sort of taken a deep breath this is really sort of our first lull since we started in person last year i think everybody is i think it's sort of settled out we have uh more cases than we'd like um we're sort of reintroducing everybody to all the hand hygiene that we used all last year mostly for flu but also there's a pretty nasty cold going around it's been knocking

017some people out so we're trying to make sure that we keep all that in focus we spent our pd day working on two of our goals social emotional health and equity so we're trying to keep those again sort of as a forefront of what we're doing we worked on suicide prevention with a group from conor's climb and then we had people come in and talk about the divisive concepts legislation that's out there that i think was sort of a low-lying anxiety among our staff in speaking to people we realize that we seem to be doing things the way they're supposed to be done which is we're steering clear of generalities trying to seat everything that we do in context whether it be historically or socially and then really just trying to give everybody a voice

018we did our virtual open house i think it's one of those things that we will probably hold on to for a while gets rid of some of the difficulties that an in-person open house would have we tried to offset the inability for people to come in and see people by running a series of parent check-in meetings last week so we did for all the grade levels just to sort of talk about things and make sure that everybody could actually meet not in person but in a live square um teachers and administrators we had a fairly good turnout people seem to be fairly happy with what's going on the standard questions are out there about homework about transition to the ninth grade those are sort of the biggest ones um so we've started some conversations around

019some of the things we're doing about homework um it seems to be fairly well fairly well received so far quarter one ends on friday um so we're walking everybody through that especially the sixth graders seventh graders for marion cross we're not used to that sort of grading process report cards will become available november 8th so that people will see that we're trying hard again to sort of recalibrate people's ideas of middle school grades they're more of a snapshot of what you've done for the last nine weeks rather than any sort of a predictor as to what's coming so it's okay if you didn't do what you were supposed to do for six weeks and then you try to cram it all in the last three weeks and it turns out that you don't do as

020well as you thought you should that's probably a good lesson to learn in sixth grade rather than as a freshman in college so that's kind of what we're trying to do um the last thing we have is that we were very happy this past week that we reinstituted our arena scheduling for our electives so our students were allowed to go and talk to all the elective teachers and choose what they wanted to do for the upcoming quarter um i should say most of them this year coming out of the kobe deer last year our sixth graders are in a set reputation of electives so they each will get access to each one of our electives for a semester hoping that they will then have their choice and know what they're choosing during the 7th and

0218th grade year we had a number of students who last year when we had to tell people what their electives were or sort of like i i wish i'd taken living arts instead of waiting until eighth grade i didn't know how cool this was so hopefully now this year at least the sixth graders will know about drama and about some of the other things that they don't necessarily get to take but the students really like that idea of having more choice they can rework their schedules individually much better than we can in the office so and right now we are discovering that we were able to equalize our electives a little bit more we had fewer requests for studies than we have had in the past not by a huge number but by a smaller

022number and we're hoping that that's reflective of a little bit of less stress and anxiety in the building which was one of our main goals for this year is to try to sort of put the fun back in middle school and not turn it into there's enough stress going on in their lives without adding to it so i think that's all that we have i always write this and don't forget um yeah so that is my report again i invite anybody who wants to come by um we have our parent we have a parent admin coffee this thursday at noon so that's already there noon's a good time you can drink coffee you can eat lunch austin's uh that's can't remember thursday is meat free so if you're vegetarian you can come by so yeah

023that's it thank you tim so what is the turkey bowl uh i'm not mr lacrosse is in charge of the turkey bowl um i'm trying to get uh more time before we actually play it because i have to recruit some subs because we're struggling right now i don't like our chances at the moment um i think it'll be i'm not sure when it's gonna be but we're gonna get through all the halloween stuff first and then it'll probably be uh somewhere second week in november great keep us posted uh anyone have questions for tim being none right thank you tim moving to julie stevenson for the hanover high school principles report we're not having nearly as much fun as the middle school right now part of it but it's november first soon we have the

024largest senior class of all of our four classes and for teachers high school teachers know that there's a lot of responsibilities surrounding november first and college recommendations it's an extra part of the job that's not really part of the job but everybody does them um and so our seniors are a bit stressed but kind of excited about opportunities away from fair our teachers are writing those recommendations at the same time as a quarter coming to a close so you may not see even though you can't see them anyway because we're wearing masks as many smiles as usual but there's definitely a little stress level there at the high school in terms of just a few things the decision making group i tried to i put links in so you can see the motions that are

025starting to pass there's three two more motions that are coming in a couple weeks to give you a sense of that i'm letting you know because i would suspect that at some point much like the council was codified here at the board level the whatever the letters are that go with the council policy but at some point our staff will come and ask for these to be recognized these motions at some point um we can have them stay at the building level but i think they feel like since we have council it's recognized at a board level they would like the staff to also be recognized at the board level the staff meeting part of it so i just wanted you to see them as we go along and you can see that the staff

026voted for them in terms of open house we do have a date at the end of february it's the thursday the last thursday february that we're hoping to see people in person and that's are not november first optimistic outlook that we will all be the health of our nation will be well enough that we'll get to see parents in person we're also talking about elective rotation and if you look at the bottom where tech is that's the project that jess and martha are working on i'm trying to figure out have we flooded the market with electives and should we be rotating them and how do we make that decision so students might have a sense of in 22 22 you can take this course in 23 you can take that and you'd have to plan

027a little bit more but we wouldn't have courses that are slightly enrolled or trying to figure out which one we should close semester semesterizing courses that whole reason for that is the trouble we're having with the new schedule um getting students to get all the courses they want and sometimes the year-long courses have buggered that up so we're trying to see if semesterizing all courses like french you have to take a and b but a could be first period for semester and seventh period um second semester and that might allow students to get more of what they want you heard about the hawks bears crash trail break julian hi i sorry i'm looking at the thing that's posted in board docs and i'm not following is this can someone are we on this talking the

028same document is it there it's there it might be you rick i didn't see anything about i didn't see anything about semesterizing electives and all that so i must staff projects it's just like hidden in there it just says curriculum night open house these are topics got it okay yeah oh i see it look up and then the circle lesson um just wanted you to get a sense of on friday circle what that is and so connected that i also did for our parents too because often people are calling to excuse their students from school for a circle and want to do to realize like it's a really people plan that it's not just we hang [Music] i think that's it in terms of highlights yeah what did circle replace i'm just trying to remember

029we have common ground yeah so what is the how's how is this working so i would say um okay so common ground was once a week and common ground had twice the number of students in it with two staff members this was half with one um and the curriculum was not as prescribed like it had announcements and we'd give the announcements but then there wasn't there weren't people that were specifically working on like this is what we need to talk about in this circle so from my perspective i think it's a lot better in terms of addressing a social emotional curriculum right um it it was really great last year i had one and because we had lunch in serpent we had to retreat like the ray school into a different position you would do

030it with your advisory and meeting every day and having lunch together really bonded those groups and so that part was great we held on to once a week lunch with the group and once a week doing the circle piece with the group and i would say the bonds probably don't feel as strong as they did last year but we're not into a crisis situation either so i think we've got to see like is it good to have that hold on to that lunch would it be better to go back to once a week and give students another free lunch period versus having to eat lunch with a group of people so i think with the scheduling committee is reconvening i think they're going to look at all of those things too the only thing when

031we created it we created it before the pandemic it was right before and so where the idea of it was and it was supposed to be a once a week thing and the pandemic merged it with lunch and then suddenly that became part of this feeling of your advisory circle was happening and we're extracting them from each other that wasn't the original intent of the program was supposed to be a once a week thing but we found that eating lunch together they can grab together not having a topic for a lot of groups as a bonding experience and we need students who might otherwise stress out about where they might eat at least once a week would have this group that they felt like they could eat with and so i don't know if i

032answered your question well yeah it's well on the way together i just wanted to get it done knowing that common ground wasn't particularly at least what i heard popular towards the end of its uh live stream there and just wanted to know how this one was gone can you remind me to the makeup of the group it's across all classes so common ground was a across all classes advisories with your grade so this year what is happening is the peer leaders are meeting they go to advisory circle and they help run it last year they would go to the different circles and help run it throughout the year this year they just are focusing on the ninth grade so they meet in lunch and they plan what they're going to do and then when it's

033the circle they are dispatched to their their people and they help run it so the seniors and juniors are running the ninth grade circles and everybody else doesn't get a peer leader but kate maybe can correct me if i'm wrong but i'd say if you were to ask a kid who knew common ground and a kid with a new advisory my senses but i'm known to be way out of touch that the people like advisory better than they like common ground but i don't know if you i think because it's is same your same grade people find it easier to get close to each other so yeah that's the student's action and is the uh with advisory is it the same group of students who go all through all four grades too that's the idea

034that you're going to stay together yeah unless you get pulled out as a peer leader right so some people lost their a person because they're now a peer leader uh jay i saw the comment in this about the server failure would it make sense to have josh give us an update on the tech upgrades maybe at the november meeting sure okay anyone else have any questions for julie uh none from the board one from the public right now right please please come up nancy carter you know i i thought i was just i really didn't think i was just going to be an observer because i spent a decade on this board i built the rms history history my question is um common ground one of the original reasons for it was to get the

035school in its entirety to be a community and therefore mixing the uh 9 through 12. um have people decided that that's not worth it or that it was an artificial fit or has anybody said that they're losing anything by um by not doing come grab my style i would say in practice it wasn't working okay the way it was meant to work and i think this works better but you are losing i mean you get the ninth graders meeting with the juniors and seniors but then 10th graders have had on their own but i think in terms of addressing school issues um and things for students to think about and how they treat each other and all that i think but it's you're right we're losing that most likely i'm just curious yeah fancy took

036care of my kids too it takes a village any other questions for julie ain't none thank you oh sorry wait i i don't i don't have a question but i i was madly texting uh liz powers about the yrbs um because the middle school takes it as well the survey and we do not get at the school level disaggregated data based on any sort of risk factors in terms of student identity and she thinks it's probably because the numbers are so small that he would then be able to go back and identify who those students were so we do get it at the state level but we don't get it at the school or the district level we could try to come up with our own surveys for that i'm sure but uh we'd have

037to do something on our own anyone else okay moving on to business requiring discussion town of hanover trustees of the trust fund is that you jamie hold on sorry did you sorry david quickly check your recycle bin if you haven't already i don't know where that is on here okay i'll help you later so this is a report that uh as you can tell by the date august 18th we secure every year uh during audit um it's included in our audit um and the as we all know or maybe we don't all know uh the the dresden school district um there are challenges with the dresden school district being allowed to have any monies held in trust okay for the district itself um from past legal discussions between the department of justice and new hampshire

038and because it's commingling funds from two states blah blah blah and go on and on and on but we won't talk about that so the monies reporting here are actually um trust fund monies for the students use okay in the way of um i'm trying to just flip it back from being upside down this is money that's been set aside at the um school district level in order to bestow awards on i believe it's mostly all seniors julie can correct me but when seniors depart and go off to other educational opportunities these the monies here are used to bestow awards to them so you can see we have the dw bruce prize fund jeremiah ice hockey fund e-rube photography prize fund william murphy lamp of learning price fund so we report on those funds every

039single year you can see that some of them have not had fund withdrawals in the last fiscal year and that could very well be because nobody met the criteria perhaps of what the fund requires um or maybe there wasn't enough money remaining i'm not quite honestly sure because i'm not in charge of how the funds are dispersed but jamie who asks so for like the hockey fund is that a request from the hockey coach or the parents i know the photography prize was given out this at the graduation this year and then i'm not sure why murphy's lamp was not given out as a graduation scholarship or gift okay so perhaps it was and as of 6 30 it hadn't been reported that could be that it might show in the next fiscal year out

040but is this are these funds anyone can make a request form or is there designated groups that can request it i'm gonna let julie answer that question because i i'm not there at the school level i'm not remembering hockey right now but basically with all of these those different funds have different ways that we like you know decide them and criteria that we decide them and so the people at the school decide them and then they're given to the students sorry i just want to make sure that we're we're taking full advantage if the intent was to use this money to help the schools and our students that we're not just leaving money on the table every year so i would imagine that and i'm guessing here that during the probably junior and senior year

041the folks in the guidance departments who are helping advise the students you know on making applications to the different schools and what they're with what their interests are i'm sure that they're probably they share the information with them that they're available okay thank you we can check on that good question well yeah the other the three of them are kind of it sounds like graduation presents but this hockey fund um how much they they have 1750 uh available so i don't know if the hockey team is not aware that they have men's and women's that they have this money to use to help the team so yeah okay any any questions for jamie rick kim has one [Laughter] neil your voice changed [Laughter] so this is just more for just i guess a learning psa

042um so why we're looking at a hanover trustee of the trust funds is because these are all you know private donors that are holding the funds these are not dresden resources because as we know dresden is not allowed to have reserve funds so this is why um if it is private donations you know the hanover trust uh trustee of the trust fund can hold them which is why we get this very small amount um you know kind of just the private donor versus when we look say in hanover the hanover trustee of trust fund you know has you know kind of other um funds that are managed so just wanted to give you a information why there are just these kind of random ones and why it's coming from hanover sure so not random thank

043you very much any other questions seeing none thank you neil okay moving on to nhsba resolutions deb yes this is nelson um i went last saturday to or i guess it was a week ago down to concord for the new hampshire school board association meeting and we had an opportunity in the hanover school board meeting trying to go over the resolutions that i was voting on and i apologize for going without the dresden board having voted on each of those resolutions but i had a pretty good idea of what you thought about at least one of them and so i just wanted to report that all the continuing resolutions passed it's one of those once they've passed three times they become you know i don't know put in concrete there was an effort to remove

044the resolution about guns from the whole poo-poo platter and that was defeated um i found myself a little unnerved because i was sitting right in front of the maskless woman who wanted to remove guns from consideration with all the others but she was okay um there were five proposed resolutions and one of them was to have a scholarship available for student reps to school boards in the state of new hampshire and there were some configurations and in the end that actually the resolution didn't pass but the general sentiment of the group was to do something like that so the school board association is going to do it um the second one had to do with paying dues the board the new hampshire school board association didn't support it it didn't pass the third one came

045from the keene school district and that was very similar to the hannover dresden proposal and because it came in earlier it was on the agenda earlier it was not as specific nor related to hb 544 as the hannover dresden proposal was a resolution was but it passed and i can i just want to read it was a general statement of support for diversity equity and inclusion and commitment to free and open dialogue around such concepts as racism and sexism it was also pretty much a two-sentence resolution which i think helped but anyway that passed that was from keem then there was a resolution to fund a transition year a postgraduate transition program and this was for every school district to fund such a thing and the new hampshire school board association said you know we

046are still working on funding special ed funding all of the things that have been ongoing problems so this sounds like a great idea we are not going to support that as adding on to what we want the state to um fund because it was for the new hampshire legislature to fund it so that did not pass and then we came up as the fifth and final resolution and the good news is that i got to vote twice for everything because i was the only representative to represent two boards and i made sure i got both my pieces of orange paper but um they weren't i think they weren't even going to entertain a motion to vote on it and i stood up and i said i think it's really important that our peers give us

047the courtesy of a vote on this the school board association had said you know it's kind of they didn't say redundant but the keane had already presented this resolution which they presume would be passed and they said we were too specific in focusing on one bill and i reminded them that we used two bills as examples but they were not the focus and i referred to legislative creep being something of concern to us in hanover adjustment and then they voted it down um so that's my report but they have really good snacks i am happy to continue to go and i have a really good pen that i like so i'm happy to represent you in additional years or for future years but that's my report thank you one hand in the room with kevin

048kevin i noticed that there weren't a lot of attendees at the meeting so it was less than 50 representation there was a quorum so how do they define a quorum because there are less than 50 percent of the school districts represented you know what that's a really good question i don't know the answer to that but um i don't know so uh i don't know the answer off the top of my head but you will find the answer in the bylaws for the new hampshire school board association that will tell you what uh what a quorum would be required for the year we only had a 30 representation or something like it was pretty low uh [Laughter] so thanks for attending first of all um and then i i was reading in the minutes of

049the meeting that i think there was i don't know if it was emotion from the floor and i'm lost in the minutes right now so i can't find it um but that there was a discussion around kind of remote access board meetings and how it's how several board members felt or at least districts felt like that was really helpful to have this flexibility and participation anything on that or that was there an actual uh motion from the floor at that point or do you recall and i'm sorry i don't have them that's perfectly okay i think that um i'm trying to remember where i took all my notes my understanding was that they said as long as i don't remember whether there was an actual emotion so that's to answer that question but there was

050uh the advice was given that absolutely school board members can continue to attend as rick is doing with our meetings but that there needed to be a quorum of bodies present in the spot that the public could come to if they so wished so that was in fact discussed but i don't recall that there was right so that just kind of i didn't know if there was anything further in advocating perhaps to new hampshire legislature to say you know maybe we should entertain some flexibility and what because that's kind of the status quo right right right um yeah so i saw that in the notes and i just thought thanks thank you thank you for calling me out i will note that garrett's at home too [Laughter] thank you anyone else any questions thank you

051moving on to class enrollment and uh class size is that jay or jamie um [Music] so whoever wants to go whoever wants to go first i just put up enrollments for people so the october one report um is all it's been called last year it never happened um the year before it was a very small sort of class size report and then i found one from 2014 that was like 15 pages long so i didn't know which version of a report to do so i just stuck with the class size one um and it's pretty straightforward the only you know comment i would really say is sometimes the average doesn't tell the whole story because there might be a small class and then a class that's over enrolled in that same so if you take

052you know seven sections of advanced prose writing there's not 16.3 students or 16 in and 18 there might be a class of 22 and then a class of 12 based on how the schedule rolls out um but when looking at it and it was a good exercise to do because i look at it in general but just to see it all on the spreadsheet them to go through and i had to figure out what was over and what was under it felt like we were in really good shape right now for this year and gave me a sense of budgeting needs for next year so thank you uh and tim what does that mean total 346 plus 1hs home school oh one home school okay yeah because we're going to have one and we are

053enrolling one student after october 1st i think they start next week who is going to be doing most of their curriculum at home school but will be joining us for pe science and i can't remember what the other classes social studies yeah i didn't know if that meant high school i didn't homeschool okay thanks and then do you want while you're there do you want to anything you want to talk about the sections but just the sections um you know they're they don't always work out exactly the way they're supposed to so the average it's not like you have all 19 you can see there's some fluctuation one of the big differences that we do notice is that this foreshadowing will come up again right now we have seven sections in the seventh grade and

054eight sections in the eighth grade and you can see that there is a significant difference in the size of some of the sections especially in english uh social studies and science um where we don't have level of math that sort of makes everything even out so we're trying to we're trying to come up with ways to sort of make that more equitable and also the smaller class sizes do allow you to do a lot more differentiation much more easily uh that's pretty much all we have we see some fluctuation in uh electives um coming off of last year when we had people who were out of the building some of our one of our elected teachers was out taught remotely the entire year so people weren't exposed to some of those classes so notice our

055sort of our eighth grade choir is down considerably from where it was previous we assume that that's going to go back up and that will give us some more ability to equalize our own why is why is phys ed listed as a an elective i thought that was required because there is one day that is you can actually choose to take pe on a wednesday as a free election got it okay offer all kinds of different things uh fishing mountain biking snowshoeing all those sorts of things can be offered as free electives i like ukulele ukulele is very popular thank you uh and julie do you have any comments on your section reports because the only other thing i would add is if you know the column that says class max that's an agreed upon

056max by our cpp group and we looked it over a year ago and adjusted them and you'll know and it's just what they've agreed upon and they'll often notice in elective sections they might feel like the max can be higher and in sections where the students need a little bit more hands-on work the max is lower okay that's what first came from that agreed upon cpp documents the committee on policy and procedure but not real policy [Laughter] thank you any questions for tim or julie one from um kim so so julie um it's a high school question so i was looking through and seeing kind of what the average enrollment are and it's i see french one has four score students in it transforming so when we ran that course or decided to run it

057it's always a debate whether you run it or not and it's kind of strange to not have level one in the language with kids coming from other districts last spring it was sitting over ten and for some reason i don't know if those kids left or they switched languages over the summer or what happened but it is at four and a half years and then also that general biology is six this is i was just trying to yeah it needs to seem kind of small right so yeah no there's there's definitely room to grow in some areas um a lot of this problem than the other but um but definitely that's what makes me feel comfortable going into budgeting too this is where we're sitting right now because we're at 691 as of october 1st

058and our projections for next year are 29 lower and we've lost a few students since october 1. so i mean i think we'll gain some but um we're probably as small as it's been since i've been here yeah thank you any other questions uh kevin's up kevin how did you say you set max class that was the ideal yeah so so if there's a document that keeps getting updated in this group see it was called cli once now at cpp the group of coordinators plus the community on the leases in that group looks over that document every few years and with input from departments sets the maxes for the classes so what do you do when you start seeing like an average class size bigger than that max like you have for pre-calculation right so

059then what we would do is add another section right but the hard part is we see that in the spring when we determine the number of sections and decide who's teaching those sessions and how many people we might need to hire are fifths that we might need to hire and then if that changes so sometimes kids will change or if they're in an honors level they might move down or in a regular they move up and we didn't plan on that in the spring and so when it happens as the year's going um it's harder to fix that um and sometimes it runs a little high and then we remember that for the next year and we keep an eye on it and we maybe add a section of that and take away a section

060somewhere else so there isn't a way to adjust it on the fly during the school year we adjusted on the fly um the social studies one last board meeting a month ago when we added that tenth in social studies and that wasn't a way to adjust on the fly and if we have extra fists that we can spend then we can adjust on the fly and teachers who can teach them so hiring a person to teach one section might be impossible um so that's the adjustment we were able to make in social studies um and we could try to do that in math too um we just have to make sure we have a math teacher who could teach it and make sure we have this left over to be able to do that okay

061okay yeah the other option is and we've done this before we're at the semester we shut down one of those smaller classes so i think a couple years ago in social studies we shut down one of the lower level classes had three sections or four and we made it three and then could fit the other class and gave it to someone else and moved that but that's more of a semester move it's a really hard move to make right now in the middle of the quarter okay thank you yeah anyone else thank you tim and julie moving on to business requiring action can i get someone to make a motion by consent meal move to approve items b through d by consent do i hear uh have a second you do from lisa christie thank

062you lisa okay going around the horn and i can't see everyone so i'll start with garrett i don't think i can vote but i'll say yes okay johnson is yes neil take it from here uh odell yes uh cam you want me to go to rick or you want to go yeah please yeah please sue okay tom cannon yes ben keaney yes john yes deborah nelson yes marcella lisa christie kevin kennedy yes oh yes rick thank you okay moving on to reports and communications so the only thing i will note is at the sau meeting i think uh the next sau meeting is november 16th and our next meeting is november 23rd which is the tuesday right before thanksgiving is there any concern with us moving the 23rd meeting to the 16th do we have

063enough time in the evening to do that the budget adoption is the only thing do we anticipate that running long yeah yeah is that the only item that would be on the agenda for that meeting [Music] i mean i think we would talk about it at the budget adoption right yeah so what is the uh sense of the board on moving the uh the tuesday is i'm guessing some people are gonna be out of town go ahead maybe it would make sense to have a later start time for it since just to anticipate the sau meeting going a little longer as it always does right now why don't we does everyone fine with moving it to the 16th at 7 30 p.m can i just ask one so uh is this the first presentation that

064dresden budget been to um if you want i'm the only thing i would caution is you may want to keep the rest of the dresden agenda light if this is the it's not the first present presentation budget are we presenting i thought we were presenting in december yeah it's december okay it's not never agenda yet jamie confirmed it's december right okay it so built but that's fine because we'll have built you know that'll be your your first real look at the first draft so you can opine on it and then we bring back the next draft of the monday at the december meetings so any anyone have an issue with us moving it to the 16th uh ben has a question of additional note rick looks like the same thing is going to happen in

065our december meeting which is the tuesday night before school yeah that was the next thing i was going to bring up is our next december meeting is the 21st which i'm fine with but i know i think dartmouth college has let everyone out a week earlier this year so is anyone concerned about a december 21st meeting and so let's let's right now uh keep it at the 21st of december we can always uh check back in november to see if we can find another night but so uh going forward let's plan on november 16th at 7 30 for the dresden meeting moving on to committee reports john do you got anything for the athletic i do um we had our last meeting um a couple weeks ago i think it was the 14th of october

066um had a brief discussion about uh just a facilities update from tony um kind of went in through some of the things that have already been brought before here so nothing new there um some things that will pop up in the in the budget presentations in the next couple months and then we discussed our member composition as i presented last time that we would be um discussing bringing on members of council um and then should we feel the need to bring anyone else in the committee felt at this time we didn't need to add other new community members or board members but we did officially approve bringing on council members so i believe at tomorrow's council meeting they're taking a vote um to have two representatives a male and a female um to be representatives

067on the athletics advisory council or committee um and that was about it our next meeting is scheduled for thursday november 18th at 11 am at hanover high school thank you thank you john any other committees that i didn't mention today you want to briefly just negotiations and evaluation committee right sure um who's who does evaluations well ben and i i thought you were on there too but i guess i was wrong the evaluation committee did meet again last week um to continue um working through some of the final steps um i know jay could probably be far more better than i can but we stand poised to hopefully have the final recommendation coming before um this body and then into negotiations um probably sometime in november i would guess great and then did you want

068to give a negotiations update um so negotiations continue for the hanover teachers um uh we will be meeting with them again for our next bargaining session tomorrow i do not know the status of the support staff negotiations though ben do you have an update on them similar we're meeting with them i believe next week is the next one thank you and lisa christie yeah i can do a quick cpp update um it's really quick because most of it's been covered between julie and kate um the i've been attending the cpp meetings and while they do policy with a small p um they've been doing a lot of discussions and one that wasn't mentioned is they had a discussion about credit recovery and helping um and helping students who are really struggling for whatever reason um

069and end up in that kind of 50 to 59 place of a d helping them figure out how to get them to be a pass instead of a d um and it was raised which i thought very thoughtfully as an issue of equity and just making sure that we're helping all the students that are in the building um not just the ones that are doing well but the ones that are having issues for whatever reason um so i just i really want to commend the group that um they take on a lot uh there's some pretty intense discussions um that would be putting it mildly and um i would say that julie has done an excellent job of keeping them moving and keeping things going and being very open to lots of opinions while still

070realizing that decisions have to eventually be made so that's it thanks thank you lisa okay moving on to jay superintendent's report i'll just reiterate my report from the sau meeting um i just want to thank everyone for all the amazing work that's going on despite the fact that we're facing challenges has been characterized by some as as difficult if not more difficult than last year and uh interestingly um people are doing amazing work under incredible stress and and i'm just grateful to be able to work with all of you and um we have quite a quite a lot ahead of us we had a setback in our strategic planning again and that we've had uh changeover in our board chairs now that that's finally resolved we can get back to that work and ryan is

071working to schedule a meeting um so far uh robin has has made an arrangement with the folks from battelle to do our portrait of a graduate work and we're ready to jump back into that now that we have the four chairs constituted again we also i believe robin got volunteers from among the teaching staff to be representatives on that steering committee and we will be approaching linda to talk about how we'll have student representation in this uh this endeavor too so um stay tuned that will be coming soon my report thank you jay any questions for jay robin is she still there oh yeah [Laughter] i didn't believe i'll add one thing that i did not talk about before but i've been working at the high school and middle school to um work on spending

072our funding for both the title grants and the esser grant so we're underway with that and hopefully we have some good purchases that we're going to be making so we'll be sending those funds up in the next few months thank you robin any questions question from ben i was looking into the from the last meeting and there was some discussion about a potential coma vaccination clinic for the five to 11 year olds yeah do you think that can realistically happen i have been in touch with alice eli she's our health person and she said at this time there are no plans but um i've been back and forth with dhmc and so i've offered our services to hold the clinic if they're able to but i'm just waiting to hear so but there it has

073been approved so now hopefully within the next week we'll start vaccinations so good news on that front any other questions for robin thank you great i'm turning it over to jamie for business administrator reports okay so some of those challenges jay spoke about are some of my my personal ones so i've not done a full-blown report for you based on the first quarter for dresden i did pull down some of the actual reports from the system so that you could take a look at where we are as of 9 30. um it looks like we're about eight percent remaining on encumbrances uh you know a lot of stuff has been encumbered they uncover things for the whole fiscal year when they know that what the dollar amounts are going to be we do know that

074on general fund revenue that we will be short on tuition income but right now all of your revenue numbers are going to change because we're setting tax rates right now okay so when we set tax rates some of the revenue numbers change um dresden will change a little bit we try not to change dresden because of the historical relationship between vermont new hampshire vermont sets tax rate and it's finalized in may so we can't change assessment going out to norwich off of this fiscal year so usually the only time that we change the revenues is if the revenues go up considerably and would cause both of the districts to have a surplus that's not the case this year so while you'll pricing uh changes a lot of changes to the revenue stream on the hanover

075one the dresden ones should come in pretty static because i'm hoping again i get the audit report so i can see where the actual ending balance was um so we'll br i'll bring that back out to you with a purge it's kind of early to do a projection right now but um i can bring that back up to you in october uh in november at least from the numbers so that running forward um i also did the grants so you could see what we're looking at right at the moment the grant um looks like we've had grant award we've recognized grant awards of 107 there will be more we have more available to us but we usually don't recognize them and book them until we've done it in the system in the grant system at

076the state of new hampshire okay so while uh robin has been having many meetings with the principals about the esser funds and what's available and what we're going to do with it we don't book it again until we've sent out the activities and they've been approved and then they come back to us um and ser three runs through 2024 yeah there's quite a few years left and my computer guys just died because of that um it's like telling me something so that's it from me for tonight it's uh we're working on negotiations it's been fast and furious with all of them four different ones going on two at dresden don't know which which we're getting to and then um transportation is still busy busy jamie i just want to thank you for all your hard

077work and whatever what's going on at home and we know family is more important right now so um but you i don't know how you're doing it keeping all the balls in the air but thank you very much sir i appreciate that hopefully it will come down here shortly so but we'll keep it rolling forward and we'll be doing budgets with our first draft meetings tomorrow and then dresden on thursday so that'll be exciting because we haven't pulled them all together yet to look at thank you got questions shoot them my way i'm happy to answer them feel any questions for jamie seeing none rick okay thank you so at this time we're going to need to go into non-public i believe it's uh 2b and 2c so for these people that are either on

078zoom or in person uh it'll probably be 10 15 minutes and then we're going to come back out go back into public to vote so feel free to stick around or thank you very much for coming 10 or 15 huh you're going to need a motion yeah i know um so could someone move and as i said i think it's 2b and 2c okay move to enter into non-public session under rsa 91-83 colon 2 b and c correct from ben okay uh garrett there it is johnson yes me altered it over to you tim hartman yes camden yes john yes deborah nelson yes marcella iglesias lisa christie s kevin kennedy s odell yes so uh tom i'm going to give you a call on my cell phone if that's right [Laughter] i can find it

079yeah i'll do that i'll see you in a bit and i think that [Music] yes do are we ready to move back into public we're there yes yes can i get someone to move on the approval of new hires and fte increases i will move to approve hiring me to scott as the interim learning specialist kelly mcconnell is a foreign language teacher donna ferreira as a part-time learning specialist and increasing the fte for social studies as presented we have a second we do all right lisa christie okay uh johnson votes yes neil over to you uh hartman hartman yes camden yes yes deborah yes yes there's christie yeah yes and odell yes that was unanimous rick thank you so if anyone has additional topics for the agenda uh please let me know um since we're

080going to be moving the meeting a week earlier i think my planning meeting will probably be the first week in november so just get it to me before then any questions or concerns i do have one issue this is dad nelson speaking after go ahead debra oh thanks twitch is deb now by the way thanks for your approval um after the questions about the new hampshire school board association i discovered that i had stuck in a different part of my book and overlooked when i was preparing tonight a resolution that was submitted past the deadline but that they did um allow people to discuss and it's the one that kim was asking about and so i'm just going to send an email to people kind of clarifying that resolution thank you okay um do i

081have a motion to adjourn i'll move sorry second by john punch great thank you everyone all right thank you thanks guys all right sorry keep everybody so late i'm sure rick will blame it on me
