move changed okay at this point uh if there's anyone in the public who would like to address the board if there's an item that's in our agenda if you can hold your comments until we get to that point but if there's any other comments you'd like to make this is your opportunity if you would like to speak please raise your hand and i'll move you over into the panel so you can talk hi dan you are now allowed to talk if you can just introduce yourself and what town you're from yeah sure yeah thank you for the recognition my name is dan richards i am a resident of uh aetna and the father of samantha who is in the second grade and jackson who will soon be next year in the uh in kindergarten so
i've just got a couple of comments to make and i apologize for those of you who saw me earlier uh today but uh this is a little bit of a follow-up uh with respect to to the comments that i made earlier um the first is that i just want to i want to publicly recognize and thank uh superintendent jay badams for his leadership in that of his team during a really really difficult year and just to let him and the rest of his leadership team know that we are enormously grateful for uh the steady hand that he and his team have had during uh what has really been an unprecedented and really difficult year and to help lead our community through challenging times so thank you jay and and for your team and you know
and honestly for the whole board um you know for making that happen um my two comments are as follows number one i've been told that some of the faculty members uh at uh sau 70 have been displaying political signs on school property in violation of new hampshire state law and i want to make a formal request that any and all signs for democrat or republican candidates political slogans maga blm or any other political literature be removed from school grounds i also want to request that sau 70 confirmed that all classes and coursework are being taught without political bias which has no place in our education system well i think everyone on the call will probably agree that spirited debate is essential to the learning process it's the job of our school to teach our kids
how to think not what to think when it comes to matters of politics religion and other protected classes of subjects so if you could just log my request and it would be wonderful if the school board could respond affirmatively that this will happen and uh when it does report back to the community that would that would be wonderful um the second topic i want to address is the equity diversity and inclusion initiatives that are currently underway at sau 70. um first of all i'd like to commend uh again the leadership team for addressing what is a difficult topic uh head-on and the good news at least um to the extent there is you know good news that's coming out of 2020 not a lot of it um is that the survey that was performed that
i read last year by the center for education equity reported that our school achieved very high marks in virtually all of the categories that were evaluated right i mean that's great news in fact it means our schools are egalitarian they're inclusive they provide equitable access to our students to learn and while there are always areas that we can improve um we should be proud and i am proud of the environment that has been created for our kids and for their education and and i appreciate the work that has gone into making that so both at the sau 70 level and for the folks um who are on the board and attend these meetings you know week in and week out uh when you've got other obligations particularly in a time when we're all impacted just
terribly by covid so so thank you for that so um i understand though that the faculty and staff have been undergoing edi training and i think it's really really important for sau 70 and for the board to be as fully transparent with the community as to the content of these trainings in all of the curriculum or policy changes that might result because i've got some concerns and i know these concerns that i have are shared by others in the community and let me just uh share some of that with you in march of last year there was an intensive titled exploring whiteness and becoming an anti-racist activist that was taught at hanover high school so i asked several weeks ago actually before the holidays for the syllabus and received it now i don't know how
many of you on this call have gone through everything that there's a lot there um so many hours of videos and i haven't actually finished reviewing all of it but i've spent enough time with it uh to be deeply troubled by some of the contents in in troubled enough that you know i'm sitting here with you tonight and i intend to engage in some of the folks that i've been talking to ten intend to engage um to understand fully the context in which this is being taught number one and number two the influences it's going to be potentially going to have on our school system let me just give you a couple of examples as to as to why i'm here um the course the march intensive started with a quiz about race and there
were a bunch of innocuous questions about race which is fine um but about three quarters of the way through the quiz there's there's a real whopper um and that question is the rise of white supremacy was tied most directly to and there are five choices indian removal slavery the declaration of independence the u.s constitution or ancient greece now my again my hunch is that most of us on this call would probably get this wrong at least in the minds of the people who administered the quiz so i'll just tell you what the answer is according to the quiz makers uh the declaration of independence is responsible for the rise of white supremacy um and the reason given is that the concept of freedom itself gave rise to racism and so you know you can try
wrapping your mind around that uh actually i i wouldn't um because it's not only anti-american it's absurd um the second thing that i would say is that we have there are a bunch of examples and again i'm not i don't want to waste everybody's time and consume the evening because i know you got important stuff to do but the course is filled with videos and the first of which is a lecture by a guy named tim wise and mr wise describes himself not as a liberal but as a proud leftist which is fine i mean everybody's entitled to their own uh you know political views but the stuff that is in the speech that he gives is uh in my opinion outrageous and had so much profanity in it that i had to make sure
that my kids were literally in the other room with the door closed um while i was reviewing it so i'm not going to repeat the you know the swears from the from the speech but let me just give you a couple of examples of the kinds of things that are being taught in this march intensive number one rich white people telling working-class white people that their problem is other working-class people who just so happen to be broader than themselves that is the whole history of america number two liberty and freedom you think we believed in that what history book have you been reading we don't believe in that number three let's be clear our ancestors from europe were the losers of their societies number four teachers they want to do the right thing but if
you get into a system that is about domination and control in sorting and separating and limiting opportunity rather than expanding it if you get into a system as an educator the job of which is to provide opportunities for a narrow few and everybody else works for those people then whatever your intentions are don't mean anything number five we've created a fictional narrative in this country about why certain people come to america a lot of white folks are real quick to say i don't mind them coming i just want them to come the right way legally like my family what the hell legally like your family do we really believe our grandparents deserve credit for not breaking a law that didn't exist there was no law that said they couldn't we came for principles like liberty
and freedom and they're just coming for stuff what the hell are you talking about we came for stuff and lastly we conceive of our role those of us who have got some enlightenment some important stuff to share we conceive of our role as converting the heathen we're conversion machines we're evangelical radicals and we're going to evangelize the heathens and get them to see the error of their ways so price goes on like this for two hours in 13 minutes and outstanding delivery aside because his delivery is i have to give him credit excellent um he's derogatory he's offensive and i would dare say that the things that are coming out of his mouth are yes in fact racist and i don't think they belong in our school system so now to be fair i was
not in the classroom so i don't know how this instructors contextualize this but if this guy's views are the ones that are being taught as as right as things that we should you know ascribe to then we've got real problems and those problems should be addressed and addressed early on and dealt with and i think everyone would agree on this call that we don't need evangelical radicals as he describes himself proselytizing to our students that's not the that's not the purpose of our school system you know our hard working staff for starters who are already stretched in performing absolutely heroically during really difficult times they shouldn't have to endure this kind of stuff either so please consider this a formal request for the sau 70 school board to provide to the community in a timely
way all available information regarding the trainings being conducted including syllabi course materials objectives and any and all intellectual property being used to support these these trainings and classes so i really appreciate you all bearing with me and listening to what i had to say but um you know i represent the view of a whole bunch of folks that we've been talking to and uh we just really want some transparency and want to make sure that things are being done in a balanced and measured way number one and number two that we're not just overloading and breaking the backs of our educators who are you know really working hard during a terribly terribly difficult period um in our history so thank you very much thank you dan for bringing your concerns to the board uh i
will note we will take a look at uh the issues you've raised and we'll make sure we get a response in the future uh one thing is this is the hanover school board so this is the race school um so this is probably the the second issue you brought up probably should have been brought to the dresden or the sau board but a lot of us are on on those boards too so we we heard your concerns um does anyone on the board or the administration have any comments at this point okay yeah the point that mr richards brings up is is well taken and uh we we we did respond to his right to know request on the curriculum for the march intensive uh which which was board approved um and and we'll uh
like i said like rick said we'll we'll take a look at this um what what's really apparent just in in dan's comments is that the the work that we're doing with diversity equity and inclusion is a is a much larger conversation and we acknowledge this in a meeting we had with with our equity committee and the leadership team yesterday um that there are community conversations that definitely need to take place before the district makes any big moves with regard to curriculum and instruction and that's what we've been saying all along should be part and parcel of our strategic planning process we have assured the community that equity will be a lens through which we do look at our curriculum and our practices and while that work was derailed by kovid robin and i have been
working to kick start it uh we do intend to have our strategic planning work resume well in advance at the end of this school year and and these topics are are certainly going to be really opportunities for us to have community conversations thank you jay okay uh moving on uh to principal's report lauren all right perfect i will use the first part of this is not what i'd written out for the principal's report but um simply to say that i nan and i encourage dialogue around these issues and we've engaged with dan particularly nan has engaged with dan and we will continue to do so in a productive manner and i can't comment on what's happening at the high school but i can comment on what's happening at the ray school and i would just
say that as we're doing this diversity equity and inclusion training one of the many key tenets is the lens of multicultural education and multicultural education is defined by three pillars and those things are a curriculum that's rigorous that requires us and our students to have critical thinking and learn those skills of critical thinking and apply them and also to include social justice and what we're teaching every day in the classroom so that students can engage and staff can engage in these important conversations and so that not one voice is heard but all voices are heard um to the extent that i'm i'm able to on a monthly basis i've been sharing out what the race school has been doing for diversity equity and inclusion as it pertains to these trainings so i would encourage anybody
that is interested in hearing about what we've been doing here at the race school to take a view of previous school board meetings and continue to attend them because at every meeting i do try to highlight in my principles report what our focus for the month has been and i intend to do that during this principles report as well and last month we had a wonderful vignette by two of our staff members that spoke a little bit more about what the staff is doing in terms of a book study here at the school so we'll continue to engage in these conversations and certainly move the needle and move things forward because that's what we're tasked to do uh we can't sit on our hands and pretend that these issues don't exist that's a crime so
we'll continue this work together with input from the community and this hard work that's being done by our teachers here at the race school as dan said has to be commended because in light of what we're all going through right now we still continue to do this work because it is the cornerstone and the foundation for everything else that we do i'm going to circle back around to dei in just a moment but i'm going to officially start my principles report right now to talk to update the board about enrollment as i promised as you all know we're going to be heading into the third and final term here at the race school and that changeover date is march 5th we conducted our term three survey to determine what class sizes and staffing and space
would look like in our third term as of today our enrollment is at 456 students that will change with the addition of the students that i'm about to tell you who aren't registered yet but once they go live for this final term they will be added to our enrollment if they are transferring from another district or transferring back in from home education in our kindergarten in person classrooms we are adding five students three of those students are already added to our classrooms and have come through our doors from other districts and we'll be having two more join us from uh either home education or uh remote classroom uh in this final term so our in-person class sizes for kindergarten will range between 15 16 and 17. in our remote classroom for kindergarten for two term
three we will have four remote students for first grade we are adding three students for the final term our class size will be at 16 or 17 and we will have five remote learners in our first grade remote classroom in second grade we're adding three students for the final term our class sizes in person will be either 16 or 17 students and our remote classroom will have 17 sorry seven students in third grade we're adding three students to hear a trend here we're adding three students to our in-person learning our remote classroom will be at six so our in-person class sizes will be 18 or 19. in grade four we're adding three students to our in-person classes um this will push our class sizes in fourth grade to 20 21 and 22 i'm going to
circle back to that in a moment our remote classroom will be at nine students in fourth grade and for fifth grade we're adding four students uh so our remote classroom will have seven and our class sizes in person for fifth grade will be at 18. so i hit a pretty high number 22 in fourth grade so i'd like to update the board about our plans for term three um we have been sitting at 19 or 20 students in person in fourth grade and maxed out um our ability to physically distance in fourth grade before adding these additional three students and not counting the possibility of other students enrolling into fourth grade during the third term we have a known loan leave of absence beginning at the end of february the beginning of march and continuing
for the remainder of the year and we're taking this opportunity to hire two teachers to fill that long-term sub-position so we will have two long-term subs in the fourth grade and we will be dividing the class that was already going to have a new teacher anyway into two separate cohorts that will have smaller class sizes that can accommodate the students that we're adding as well as any additional students that will have for the remainder of the year joining us moving into district this will allow us to be able to physically distance properly to not have any concerns moving forward about adding any potential new fourth grade students for the purposes of we've talked a lot this year about um the limits to sort of social circles as we're cohorting students so even though academically and
during the course of the day for physically distancing we will have two separate classrooms with two teachers these cohorts were joined back together for spanish classes for recesses and for a couple of the specials so we intend to maintain a larger social circle in those friendships for the remainder of the year while still solving a long-term sub issue for to fill for this level of absence for the remainder of the year and still accommodate it seems to be ever-increasing numbers so we're excited about the folks that we have extended offers to for the long-term sub-positions and i look forward to now being able to update the staff as well as the families of this classroom having now updated the board uh the second thing that i wanted to return back to was the update about
our diversity equity inclusion training so this month our focus both at the district level and at the school level was on being an upstander so in moments of bias what do we do we were provided with a very helpful and very implementable framework for how to be an upstander in situations of bias and there are four steps that we learned about at the district level and then we practice actually today at our marion cross race school smaller school level trainings the first step being to interrupt which means to engage verbally with what you just heard questioning so we walked through how we would interrupt and why we would interrupt and how our audience might impact how we interrupt in that moment step two was to discern intent versus impact of a biased comment that was
made so we talked and uh role played what questions would help us surface the intent of the comment and the impact of the comment step three is to educate so talking to the person who has made a comment based on how we were able to question them around their intent and the impact how are we going to name that do we know enough about that issue to educate on it in the moment or in that moment should we simply say that it's wrong and then find ways to educate in the future and then step four is to echo so one of the um one of the strengths of this training is that we're doing this all together which means that we're all being empowered with the same language and the same framework to echo means
that if somebody decides to be the interrupter that they're not the sole interrupter that they're backed by others that are echoing the same sentiment that what was said was not okay and that we will do better and this is how we're going to do better in our trainings this afternoon we broke into smaller breakout sessions and were given scenarios similar to a table talk to practice and role play how we would be upstanders in very difficult situations that require a lot of courage i'll move on to the ice slide so last year we were not able to have an ice slide here at the ray school but i wanted to thank bill young who is one of our community members who reached out to us again this year having installed an ice slide in previous
years for our students he came back and installed another ice slide it's right over near little play space you can see it if you look closely if you're driving through the drop off loop in the morning or during dismissal students stand at the top of this ice slide and just can slide on down and go back and do it again it's adding another awesome element to our playground something to mix it up a little bit and the kids are really enjoying it so a huge shout out to bill young and several families that helped install the ice slide uh one evening this week and then also you know the planters that we have out front uh our decoration right now for our planters is in the form of ice sculptures uh bill young dropped off
these colored it was really amazing he colored water froze that water and brought it here to school and students from various classes made ice sculptures in our front planters out of the colored ice um so i'm going to include some pictures in this week's rays of sunshine but check it out it looks really cool were they using sharp objects to carve the ice absolutely and power tools at the same time was able to freeze the ice in different shaped containers so we have different shapes of things and different ice trays and i think that he he may have used like cookie trays and different shapes as well so it was brought to us kind of preformed for us to be able to use our creativity and create the sculptures different than you know a big
chunk of ice with people carving it out uh two more things conferences coming up in march as a reminder on march 10th and march 17th both wednesdays we will have a noon dismissal here at the rey school so that teachers can conduct conferences over zoom and then i just wanted to take a quick moment to celebrate that today was our 93rd day of school here at the ray school 93 days that we have been in school and what an accomplishment that is um i will end with this sentiment um it's an honor and a privilege to work with such a dedicated staff here at the race school one that can name how challenging and tiring this year is but also identify silver linings and solutions to the problems that we're facing this is a staff
that doesn't use covid as an excuse but rather it's been used as a rallying cry to show up every day for our students and for each other this is a staff that amidst this all continues the hard work of equity training curriculum documentation unit revision and self-care so speaking of self-care a huge happy february break next week i hope you all enjoy it i know the race school staff will this concludes my report thank you thank you lauren great news uh great report um is the school board allowed to use the slide anytime any day come on by there might be cameras so careful okay uh does anyone have any questions or comments for lauren you'll have to compete with lauren and myself though or you can get on the slide so i see a
comment oops nope any oh kelly go ahead i just wanted to reiterate that thank you from lauren i have um the rest of my family is out in oregon and they have not been in school since last march and now their teachers are getting vaccinated so they're thinking about going back and um you know they're so nervous and they're so worried and it's just um i i feel so grateful for this community and how hard you guys have been working and for the outside time that we're still doing in winter i think that is something that i have just been so grateful for and my kids have been so grateful for um i've seen comments too from people saying you know we've been in school but now we can't go outside because of the snow
and i'm like what do you mean you can't go outside because the snow that's why you go outside you know so thank you guys really in the bottom of my heart thank you and i will just note i'm sure robin will say this we got to keep our eye on the ball though 93 days let's not let's not screw it up now we've got hopefully a couple more months and then we'll be sort of back to normal any other comments or questions so oops next on the agenda [Music] is uh robin kovitt update okay well i'm happy to report we continue to have good news around covid we're covet free still and i'm crossing my fingers for the next two days but we have been very fortunate and so i think we'll send out a
reminder before break to people just reminding them to keep up the good work and no traveling and quarantining when necessary and um we also have been seeing declining numbers around us declining numbers of cases declining hospitalizations increasing numbers of people getting vaccinated so i think these are all hopefully good signs for us in the next month or so and we still do not have word about teachers getting vaccinated but i'm hoping that now that the numbers of vaccines are increasing in the state that it will happen sooner rather than later and that's it for my coveted report tonight thank you robin any comments or questions for robin okay moving on to parting words from a retiring board member so dan i will note that the document that's posted in there is the wrong document that
was the original document i have the the final document here so uh dan is uh stepping down from the board this year and we wanted to thank him for all his commitment his time and his uh contributions to all the boards and i would like to read the resolution and then turn it over to dan for any remarks and any any other remarks from the board so resolution of the hanover school board february 10 2021 whereas one person can make a difference through service to one's community and whereas dan rockmore served as a member in good standing for the hanover sau and dresden school boards for more than six years serving from 2014 to 2021 and whereas dan rockmore served on numerous committees during his term of office including central staff development committee hanover budget
committee and education committee and whereas dan rockmore has also served as a member of the hanover dresden and sau boards and whereas dan rockmore has been a tireless advocate and spokesperson for curriculum evaluation enrichment school safety and long-term strategic planning and whereas dan rockmore's unwavering principled stand on numerous topics has served as an example for all board members and whereas dresden and hanover school boards not only maintain but also in many respects improved upon their quality during dan rockmore's years of service as a board member in hanover and dresden we the undersigned extend our heartfelt gratitude and deep appreciation for the difference dan rockmore made in the lives of the students in hanover new hampshire during his years of service and for many years to come in the resolutions signed by all the hanover school
board so um let me get back to the zoom a silent clap for dan so uh does anyone uh dan i'm gonna turn over to you for any comments and then we're gonna roast you uh all right um it's uh i hope that's not a eulogy but thank you um i when i saw the agenda it seemed like i was i should say something so i i so i prepared a very short statement so thanks rick um uh i joined the school board because i have this belief one that probably many of you share that education especially public education is one of the pillars of a just society a belief that learning to wrestle with all kinds of ideas and information is an important part of making your way in the world and building a
moral compass martin luther king famously said the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice and i believe that education is among the forces that move the ark in that direction so many thanks to all of you and all the folks that i served with earlier for the good work that you do in this regard and all best wishes and the continued and ongoing efforts to bring a great education to our children it surely will pay dividends to the world even beyond the upper valley thank you dan uh so i will make sure that the right copy of the resolution is printed out and we'll get you a hard copy of it and email it to you also uh jay do you have any comments i'm kind of throwing you on
the spot there but no i definitely do um and i would just say that um it can be it can be a little demoralizing when someone gets on a school board with the um with the idea that they're going to be focusing on the education of children and things like making sure we have a curriculum that is constantly in a state of renewal and improvement or that we're focusing on the you know the betterment of the school system writ large but but a lot of the work that school boards do is um is is really uh business it's it's approving budgets if you think about how much time you spend doing that work it's it's dealing with a lot of the operational aspects of running a school district and it sometimes feels like we never
have the opportunity to talk about education and uh and outside of board meetings i've had a number of conversations with dan about that and it can be quite frustrating at times and dan i'm really pleased uh that that you have cared um and that you have uh pushed us to make sure that we return to those things that truly are important and truly draw us to this service whether we're board members or administrators or teachers or or the support staff who work here um and uh and we will really miss that influence we'll miss you we hope that someone steps into that particular role uh sort of being the educational conscience of the board um and uh and i want to thank you for for that and i think another thing that bears mentioning is
all the work you've done in the schools outside of your role as a board member uh bringing your expertise and the expertise of a lot of your colleagues um to work with our students at each level that's something else that has uh has really been appreciated and and i hope that can continue even after your service on that it will thanks thanks jay sure anyone else so kelly you're now the longest serving school board member so great thank you dan so and i jumping between zoom and board docks i realized we skipped over policies so ben is this you unhazing yeah it's a second read and i think it was talked about a little bit at sau in dresden so i don't think there's been any changes since then any comments or questions on the
policy for ben thank you great so we're going to move on to requiring action uh kim emailed me right before the meeting saying there was two slight modifications to the january 20th minutes is that correct kim the 13th i think the 13th so can you just quickly tell us what those recommendations are sure it's really just to change one sentence it's in the uh section three article 8 description um i propose it's the original says kim harden kim hartman presented a warrant article for consideration to retain year-end assigned general funds in the amount not to exceed in any fiscal year two and a half percent of the current fiscal year's net assessment and i would like to propose um really the clarification is that um it's not the warrant article is not asking to actually
retain the funds but rather that the board have the option to retain the funds um and so i would revise it by saying um kim hartman presented a warrant article for consideration that the hanover board has the option to retain year-end unassigned general funds etc let's kind of keep the rest of it so just basically add that the hanover board has the option great and then your your name was misspelled sure that too so jay you got those changes okay great so um i guess we can do approval of items b through f by consent as amended i get a head nod from j so someone would like to make a motion uh john move to approve items b through f by consent as amended second ben any comments or questions okay i'm gonna go
around uh so john hunt yes marcella lassie yes bart minion dan rockmore yes ben keeney yes kelly mcconnell yes and johnson yes great okay moving on um report of the chair so as you all know we have our meeting coming up at the end of the month um just wanted to remind everyone who who's volunteered for what so article 2 which is the tech john's going to do that article 3 is bridgeman marcel is going to do that article 4 salaries of the board ben's going to do that article 6 budget is kim article i'm sorry they're out of order article 5 union agreement is me article 7 6th grade is kim and article 8 retainage retainages kelly uh jamie yes and i just want to say i know that a few of you have
reached out to me about expanded information that you might be able to share for the articles and i promise i have not forgotten about your needs and i'll be in touch uh probably tomorrow or friday okay so relax no problem we'll be good and just to confirm hanover's meeting is at five at the high school auditorium and then dresden's at seven yes okay we'll feed you really nice good stuff socially distanced i hope yes pre-wrapped okay so do we anticipate downtime between the meetings yeah uh we usually have like a half hour so depends on how many people are there and questions and all that but hanover we we we run a very effective and efficient school board meeting so um so our so that'll be at the end of february is that right february
yep okay so if anyone has any questions or concerns let me know um and jamie will help get you ready for the presentations february 25th great and i'm going to turn over to jay thanks rick uh wow where do i start um we have we've been um really sort of blah and not even sort of we've been blessed uh with the the fact that we're well over 90 days now of in-person instruction in our school system and that's uh really it's it is due to the hard work dedication um and just the incredible incredible above and beyond uh work of our staff all of our staff um our students have been really the key to a lot of this and and our families and um it's it's uh it's it's it's really um come into
stark contrast for me when i listen to national news and i watch what's happening in places like chicago and and more directly the district that i last served in uh has been remote since march of last year and the the devastation that causes in a place that already is suffering from really gross inequity uh 80 free and reduced lunch um majority minority and uh in the second poorest uh city in the state um it's it's it's uh it's really really um like i said they use the word stark and something dan just mentioned in his remarks that what we do in our schools absolutely will uh will have a big bearing on what happens in places like erie and chicago because our students don't all stay here the education they receive here and and what
they learn here will serve them as adults when they take their place in the economy and in society and so that makes the work we do together critical in ways beyond the quality of our local school system and um and so i i continue to be impressed by our staff and grateful to them and uh and i'm keenly aware of just how fortunate we are um in so many ways here in in hanover and norwich in the upper valley in general and uh and sharing um sharing that uh uh good fortune that we have with the rest of the country the rest of the world it should be one of our goals for our kids and and that's my report thank you jay any comments or questions to jay turning it over to jamie good
evening hope all is well um i did post late um a couple of financials just for folks to take a look at we don't do quarterlies again until april i know it stated that um in the public content so i just ran the consolidated expenditure report it shows that the grants expenditures that we receive the reimbursement for the covit expenses have been moved so i posted the grants revenue and expenditure report through january 31st um the revenue sheet i have posted however it does need to be adjusted because he has it still has the initial what we initially had projected as the assessment to hanover which actually went down a little bit so we'll get that adjusted um i normally do an overview sheet um and and i didn't do that for this one because
it's not at a quarterly juncture um i met with the athletic not the athletic director uh with the um buildings and grounds uh and maintenance director uh this week i think it was what's today wednesday uh actually it was last friday last friday and we reviewed all of the um buildings and site improvement lines um we're projecting that we're in a really great spot of course due in part to the three hundred thousand dollars that we retained per the governor's order uh early on when we didn't know what the covet expenditures were going to look like or whether we were going to receive any um other offset reimbursements other than the title one monies which was based on title one monies um which was very small like six thousand dollars um we did end up
getting the i think it was a hundred and six thousand dollar reimbursement 110. uh so we do have that um in hand so to speak um we've had some expenditure since then but nothing super large we did all of our big expenditures at the beginning of the school year to open the schools so that was good for us anyway um they're still working through the second round of ex of monies that are coming out um we're going to be meeting as a team in the sau office to discuss you know where those monies are best suited to be directed to um i think they've been awarded and then now we just have to go through and and tell them where we're going to spend that um we didn't get it is the money is the
money provided to the saus or is it provided to the different school boards it's provided the different districts yeah it's just that the folks who usually manage the grant funds are at the sau level so uh robin myself j ryan uh in conjunction with lauren uh will get together to discuss you know the amount that's been awarded and um you know whether it's we whether we as a team think it's best suited you know to be used for expansion and technology or maybe you know there's a broad host of things that you can spend this second round on so you know it can be anywhere it could be curriculum it could be you know making up if there's anybody that's running behind you know i mean it's just a huge broad host of things that
you could spend it on so we'll get that done um you have more time with the second round to spend it doesn't have that doesn't have to be done by the end of the fiscal year um so that's a good thing so that they can maybe evaluate even you know at the end of this year and see if there's any you know makeup that needs to happen and it can be spent in that area um so i met with tony and matt um we are well on track for having the carpet in the music room it won't hit next week in february it's too quick but for the april break april vacation break we're also well underway with the projects that we'll be looking at uh right after the school year ends with the new
budget coming out assuming that everything's ratified there are some safety initiatives that we'll be embarking on this summer that were on our list which is awesome we are also going to be spending down both of the accounts that we have monies left in because remember we held off um last uh early well late last summer because we were again we weren't sure what this this year was going to look like um but we're in good shape so we're going to spend down the lines of the monies that we had set aside for site improvements and building improvements um and we discussed that yesterday so he should be well on his way to uh getting those set up and lined up lined up to happen we'll have conversations of course with lauren to make sure that
we're not missing any pieces there's also been some opportunities that have come up for our custodial staff i think they're going to be embarking on some professional development next week as a team matt and amy have been working with them there's um a module that's being sponsored by the new hampshire association of school business officials nasbo of which i'm a member and so they're making available um a module about um protocol and covid 19 cleaning and you know just a really great um professional development opportunity for them so we're going to have them all participate in that it was very timely i think everything's going well busing has been a challenge right along but we're we're getting requests every single week as as uh the students are starting to come back and new kiddos are
moving into the district um and so far knucklehood we've been able to accommodate everybody um karen wright i have to thank her she's been a godsend in dealing with all the buses while the rest of us have been dealing with budgets and negotiations and uh everything so she's been picking up the slack in the background there on helping to um you know coordinate all of the different uh students needs and uh so far so good we've been able to do that um and i think the after-school program's been doing fine and and of course you know we've been you know moving our kiddos over to the black center for them to be able to go to after-school programs so and i think lauren that's been working okay so far still okay good good um yeah
so we're on target and things are you know knock on wood doing pretty good uh we've had a couple of storms they've been a little bit dicey um i'm gonna remind people please wear appropriate footwear you know we have good crews that do a lot of um you know snow removal but when it's greasy underneath if you're not wearing appropriate footwear and taking your time um accidents happen and we've had a couple of slips and falls and and it's very unfortunate and it's you know it can be life long lasting when you have a fall and so i just want to remind everybody you know creepers creepers are amazing thing they're five ten dollars you can get them at a discount store you know um put them on your feet uh take precautions um you
know we do the best we can and if you see something please say something if you see an area that looks slippery or appears to be slippery don't just keep going you know call me call lauren call tony call any of us call jay let us know we want to know when there's a problem so let's keep each other safe right wear our masks behave socially distance stay home and wear the appropriate footwear thank you jamie thank you committee reports uh does any member who's on a committee have anything to report kim nothing from the uh budget nothing to report thank you kelly so there's still i'll keep forwarding them along but there's still a lot of bills coming through the legislature pertaining to school funding the latest this week was 607 um so just
it to the extent that you can i know we're all busy but keep an eye out on those um and i'll just reiterate for everyone on the board and also the public that it is easy to um to register and log your opinion you don't have to testify you don't have to be there it takes about two seconds to go in and just log your opinion and they do they do consider the you know the number of people who are pro or con on any of these issues and their discussions so that's all thank you and at this point uh we don't have to move into non-public or lauren dewey j nope okay so if anyone has any agenda items for the march meeting please get with me or lauren and uh our agenda setting
meeting will be i guess probably the first week in march so we'll make sure we can capture it our next meeting will be our next board meeting will be march 10th um at seven o'clock and uh it'll be on zoom and uh if there's no comments or questions i'd like someone to move to adjourn the meeting dan you get to it move to adjourn my final hanover board meeting at 7 54 p.m what time is it again dan i know right before 8 o'clock that was really very sweet of you all do i have a second john okay going around john yes marcela de blasio yes kim minioff dan rockmore yes ben keaney yes kelly mcconnell yes johnson yes thank you everyone uh so we'll see you i guess next week and then at the
