001Welcome everyone. I will call this meeting to order at 6:01 p.m. Um we may call a non-public session at any time in accordance with chapter 91A:32A, B, C, D, E, or I. And I will now open the floor for public input for the next 30 minutes. Anyone has anything? Feel free to You want to go? Um thank you. I have a question. I I was wondering Can you do your name and then we can Oh, I'm sorry. Al Brandano, 2 Westbourne Terrace, Kensington. Um is there a way to do like uh pledge of allegiance before the meetings? Cuz I see them do it in the in the selectmen meeting and I'm thinking when kids come to visit it would be I don't know what the protocol is if you do it in the classrooms and
002all. Hopefully you do, but if you could start the meeting with it maybe next time so when kids come it's it's a great civics lesson. That's true. Yeah, we could start We do start the morning every morning with the pledge of a There is there's a policy in SAU 16 that the pledge will be given every morning in the classroom. So it is given all every morning in our schools. Awesome. I'm saying is if the kids see you doing it too, you know what I mean? Yeah. >> it's just a follow through and we consider Yeah, we yeah, we could certainly start doing that at our next meeting. Let's let's plan on that. Yes. All about it. All right. Okay, where was I? Okay, so approval of meeting minutes. Any thoughts on the meeting minutes?
003I didn't see anything that was not correct. >> Yeah, Becky, did you see anything? Okay. I had nothing this month. Okay, we should just state for the people at home, um it's taking that that principal role is here remotely, but Becky, there's no one else in the room with you. No, she's there um and so [snorts] that's we have that principal role here remotely on the screen. All right, thank you. Okay, well, then I will make a motion to accept the meeting minutes from April 7th, both the public minutes and the non-public minutes as drafted. Second. On favor? I. I. >> I. All right, great. Okay, so our next agenda item is a central office update on the facilities. Yes, and I want to thank the board for their patience cuz I know we started
004this conversation in November, and then there was a lot of fact-finding. Mike Davey came down, and he went through the building again, and helped us update our capital improvement plan, which the board had commissioned before I came along. And then Becky and I worked on updating it. I know we've had a lot of conversations about systems control, and the oil We have two oil boilers that are on their last leg. Um don't We don't expect them to last much longer, and sort of been talking about what do we do to support the building. Um last year we had put in fiscal year budget 26 the system controls, and we did start that work. I think they've been in here. They worked on it over April vacation. So that phase one has happened. We have an
005interesting fund balance issue due to unfilled positions. And as we talked about in our budget workshop in November, and I've talked to you guys a little bit about in memos and other conversations is a strategic idea, which is to take advantage of the fund balance. You've talked a lot in public about the need for the new heating system. The cost of oil has gone up. [clears throat] So we asked Mike Davey to come and do a presentation on what the superintendent's office is recommending for action from the board in terms of replacing We have two oil boilers replacing one with propane. >> [snorts] >> And just setting Kensington up for the next 10-15 years where otherwise you're going to have to come up with this money within the next few years. So, Mike has a
006presentation. [clears throat] You guys want him to go ahead and >> Please. Yep. And just a quick um intro. Um Mike Davey, I'm the president of EEI. We actually helped Kensington develop a capital plan in 2016, I think. So, it's been been a while. Um at that time the boilers were um were still had about uh 10 to 15 years of life on them. So, now it's almost 10 years later since we started the process and they're they're getting near the end of it. And so, Brian um uh had us come in to take a fresh look at it. And we have a quick PowerPoint which it will be over here. I'll turn [snorts] the camera back to this and say what I emailed you. >> Do you want to pull it up? Do you
007want to pull it up for you? >> Uh sure. >> [snorts] >> All right. So, we're going to jump into the numbers first and then talk a little bit more about the design. Right now, there are two the two oil boilers um both um nearing the end of their useful life. We are recommending replacing one of the boilers now to a high efficiency propane tank. And the es- the estimated cost to put that system in is $274,000. We anticipate it'll save 13,000 a year in heating costs. Um oil costs are now up to $5 a gallon. Um [clears throat] propane is at $1.79 a gallon. >> Oh, wow. Um so there's a pretty significant savings with bulk propane. And there's a one-time rebate of $10,000 um from the utility from the New Hampshire Saves program
008that uh encourages high-efficiency boilers. Um so that being said, we recommended a Crest boiler, which is a lot made by Lochinvar. It's made in in Tennessee. It's a high-efficiency boiler. It's a fairly big and robust boiler. Um and it's it's the product that uh this we do all the schools in Manchester, and they've >> [clears throat] >> they've um they've sort of uh tested a bunch of the boilers and believe that that's the most efficient um best ones that it's been standardized on uh for the city of Manchester for their schools. Uh we also um Mr. Sands, the facility director here, uh we had worked with him in Pelham, and that's the product that we put in at the Pelham school. So we've had great luck with this product across uh New Hampshire, Maine, and
009Vermont. Um there is a lower-cost boiler that would fit in the room actually a little bit better called the FTX L that would save $7,500. However, the rebate comes down by 6,000. So it almost the the rebate program is almost encouraging that um one of the things that uh the district could do so that the um rebate check typically comes in at the completion of the project. I understand that the budgets the budget um year ends in June 30th. So, one option to bring the budget down from 274 is we could have that rebate check go toward EEI, our company, in 2026. Um included in the 274,000 is the district owning 3 1,000-gallon buried propane tanks, and I have a map of where those would go. Um and that the cost of of the district
010owning the tanks is roughly $22,000. There is an option where if we want to save money, um most propane vendors, like Dead River, Rymes, Irving, they will let they will own those tanks for you if you enter into a a fuel contract with just them. If you want to go out to bid every year, um it you usually have to own your tanks or deal with a swap out or an in-kind transfer. So, if if you decide to go with this option, and let's just say hypothetically you go with Dead River, and you're really dissatisfied with the tanks, because they're buried, what would normally happen is if you want to get out of that contract, you can either buy out at that point, or um what's what's commonly done is an in-kind transfer, meaning let's
011just say you have Dead River or Hafner's, and you switched to Rymes. Rymes would provide new tanks to um that vendor to make up for it. Um we we have most of our districts feel that they they get better pricing owning the tanks and going out to bid, rather than having the propane vendor >> [clears throat] >> uh own the tanks. It's I know you know, people at their homes kind of go both ways on this, too. Some people like to have the the tank manufacturer the I'd say the majority of New Hampshire districts that are on propane uh end up buying their tanks either outright or at the end of the when they're able to buy them out. So, depending on which credits you take, um that 274 could get down to about um
012242,000 if you let the vendor own the tanks. Can I jump in? >> Yep. Um so, talked to Brian Sands about this. We have a contract with Heffner. Um he's pretty back and I we've talked about it. We're really leaning towards um not owning the tanks and we're not concerned about having to go out to bid with Heffner cuz they do all This is where being part of SAU 16 is a benefit where um Brian says we get really good deals because we are so large and um cutting off the 22,000 right now, having Heffner who works with a lot of our schools own the tanks, and then in the future it would cost you a lot less to buy them when you wanted to, and you're doing such a big ticket item now. And
013um Brian's confident [clears throat] that our rates for propane will be very competitive um because we're such a large SAU and Heffner's, you know, is inclined to continue to partner with us. So, just putting that out there. >> [clears throat] >> Um what's also included in this So, projects of this size in New Hampshire are required to have a payment and performance bond. That's an insurance policy that we take out on behalf of the district um that guarantees that price. So, for for any reason, it would be it would be from Nationwide. Um it includes engineering. So, the two the two [clears throat] types of engineering involved in this are civil engineering where we're going to locate the propane tank and we have a preliminary idea where that would go, uh running underground the the
014pipes, and then the mechanical design of the boiler. Under this scenario, one oil boiler will remain as backup. However, the propane it's really for in the event of uh a failure or a cleaning or if you run out of propane, then you would automatically switch to oil. But this this boiler would be sized to heat the entire building, so it would be a fail-safe. And we would recommend in the CIP eventually within the next 5 years replacing that oil boiler and going to all propane um and and and eventually [clears throat] getting rid of oil. Just one kind of We We all think of oil as a heating fuel in New Hampshire. In general, across It's really only New England and the upper peninsula of Michigan that do any heating with oil. Natural gas and
015propane are the way almost everyone um heats in the rest of the country. Um and so and with oil at $5 a gallon, um these savings are even even better than what's realized here. Um We have a To get this [clears throat] pricing, we did a preliminary um 3D rendering of what the boiler room would look like um and um making sure that that fits. One note, the the more robust boiler, I don't know if anyone's been in that boiler room, it's pretty tight. So the boiler that we like that has a lot of longevity just barely squeezes in there, so that's why we had to do a 3D model. And if we can fit it in, but it is very tight. Um and so these are just sort of our drawings. Um as for
016the I'm trying to think. So I um So if this is the main entrance here, Yep. the boiler is sort of in this courtyard. It's a It's a um little bump out and it's a It's a It's access to that boiler room only and you can't get to the school from it. >> Yeah. And so we're proposing putting the buried propane tanks um right out here on Amesbury right just off of um Amesbury Road. You wouldn't see them other than like they'll have like a green cap at the top so you bury [clears throat] them except for the fill point. We would bury this underground pipe, come around the building, go here. We did talk about and again all pending board approval. We talked about other locations. The two other ones we talked about were
017back in the courtyard but it would mean that the propane truck would have to back back around like where all those bikes are parked right now for example. We also talked about right here which is also a decent location in front of the handicap spots. Downside of that spot is if there were ever to be like an addition to the school for any reason in the future um that would be the most obvious place to put an addition. So I think that would be a reasonable location too if somebody doesn't like the front one and then you'd have to deal with moving those tanks in the future if if ever there was a a need to do an addition of some kind. Um and so that That's about it. We can certainly talk talk more
018about it but hopefully that gives you kind of a flavor of uh the options um in front of you. So I have I have a couple of questions. So you said the savings from this is going to be it's like 13 for a year and the life of this is going to be 10 years. This This is a 20-year project. >> A 20-year project. So technically over the course of the 20 years, we'd be saving what more than what we're paying for it. Would that be correct? >> Yes. And you're replacing an obsolete piece of equipment. Are there warranties that come with this? So, there's a 1-year all systems and parts warranty. So, the the first year and then there's a 5-year warranty on the boiler heat exchanger. Okay. What's the time frame? It would
019be completed prior to this heating season. We we usually call the heating season Halloween. So, we would definitely want to get the the underground work done before September and then we kind of be finishing up the boiler plant in September. What's nice about this boiler plant is our crew can access it without coming through the school. So, we can be completely outside. I had a question too about the location. Is there Is there any concern with doing that and letting abutters know because you are a abutting property? >> that's a good question. So, we are a we're going to have a civil engineer and and when we do a project of this scale, we have to send it to the town and to the state fire marshal's office. Um normally [snorts] when we site the
020property we're we're enough off the property line. Normally, we wouldn't >> [snorts] >> do it for the tanks. We are going to be fairly close on the underground line itself. So, I honestly don't know. There's certainly nothing telling um there's no you know, the school board could ask me to go to the planning board and if it's not required in general school districts have more [snorts] um Let me pick the word right. Um independence and self-determination. There's probably a better word than on issues than most property owners. So, there's an RSA that gives broadly gives school districts um immunity from most zoning and planning ordinances. However, um you know, you guys we can do we can absolutely go to the planning board, especially if you think there's abutters that would be concerned about this. I
021think you only have one abutter, who just happens to be a friend of mine. >> [laughter] >> So, that's the reason I'm asking. Yeah, that's a good neighbor. with them about the planning the project? Yeah. Yeah, go see the Cohens instead of going to the planning board, maybe? Yeah, in more informal. And and if this is approved, we would bring a final print to town hall and say, "Hey, are there any other steps that they want us to jump through before we did it?" Mhm. And your um recommendation of the Crest one over the the other one is is based having seen it and it's been used a lot in in >> It's based on longevity of the boiler. So, Honestly, if we were just to say what would look most aesthetic and fit easiest,
022then the FTX L fits better. This is a longer lasting product. It's called a It's a higher mass boiler. So, I would call this product one that I would expect to last 20 years. It's like anything else. It may not make it that that far, but um the FTX L one is usually more of a 15-year boiler. They're both really good products. If you want it and we talked with Brian about this, this I will say this Crest boiler is going to just fit in by happenstance. So, that's why we kind of if there was a bigger boiler, I would say you would do the Crest every single day, but it was so tight that it really was a jump ball and I don't think you could make a wrong decision between the two. Mhm.
023Um Yeah, it's I mean there's not that much Well, it's like a $1,500 savings for what most people in the field feels is a higher quality. Yeah. Longer lasting. It doesn't really matter that it takes up the whole No. >> No. No, it was just a It was It was funny for to watch them try to figure out the math and Yeah. measure the pipes and figure out how it was going to fit in. Yeah, and taking the door frame off and stuff. Great. Huh? So, what are you So, really looking for the board to either approve using the end-of-year fund balance to go up to authorize this project knowing that there'll be updates um or not is really where where we're at. Um That's where we're at. [snorts] That's our Are Are we going
024to be using any of the money that's in the trust for this? So, that's also a conversation you guys can have. Um if we want to skip to the part of the board packet with your um financials that I do, I mean Molly just did it. Um I had it just open to it, too. Um Right now and I think I just Oh, there she is. She just lost my page. Sorry, I I lost my page. I just want to go a little back up. What? I had it on the two pages. Do you have more than two pages? For your what? >> For the board Okay. Oh, you just There was the updated agenda and then a board packet. Oh, you want to Oh, I see it. I'm sorry, Becky. I don't You know
025what happened? I moved the Thank you. Okay. So, right now, the end-of-year budget the right now the balance is 281. You're not going to end at 281 because there's subs- like it's not perfect. There's substitute What Becky did um with um Molly and me, but what Becky did was really go through and scrub the budget, um clear up encumbrances, encumbered what she thought we had some a lot of special ed needs that we know we're going to pay, so she put that in there. And then we [snorts] took out encumbrances that we we got the final balance for. So, we're close to 281. It's not going to be exactly 281. We're looking Well, so when we're just looking at spending, we do have to go against the remaining budget, which is the 257. Okay. However,
026we do have the small sources of revenue that bump us up to the 281. And so, trust funds are funded from fund balance, not from remaining expense. So, just keep that in mind as we're having this conversation. Say that again, I'm sorry. >> Trust fund balances come from Trust funds are funded from fund balance, not remaining expense. >> Yeah, we're not talking about putting money in the trust fund. They're talking about expending it from the trust fund that is a core part of the project. >> And so, just keep in mind, we we can only expend up to the 257. Right. But then there's 90,000 in the repair and maintenance fund. Correct. So, they could spend a portion of that fund. Okay. Yeah, I mean, that's what it's for. Right. And that's what you've been
027saving up for, knowing that the boiler has to be replaced. >> And I thought that we talked about maybe using half of that towards that Yep, you all talked about this in public and and using that 100% and it's really um there's a couple decisions I feel like the board needs to make. Go ahead and do this project because you do have to do it eventually and deferred maintenance equals increased cost from everything I've done in research around facilities. Um also, you're never going to have this large fund balance again. We had a staffing that were not filled, including we tried to fill that we couldn't fill. It's a big chunk of this. Um and you have the trust fund. So, it's really yes, do it. No, do it. And if it's yes, how much
028of the fund balance do you want to use? And the next would be you would authorize the use of trust funds up to a certain amount to cover the cost of the boiler project. And so, that's really where the board needs to to guide me. Um and ask Molly questions if you have questions and ask Mike if you have questions. Okay. Are we seeing anything else in the horizon in the next year that we might need to use that fund balance for? Not according to the capital improvement plan. Um we we um the system controls were right now. And then the boiler. Um we are um we're going to be tight next year because of the Super tight. We're just going to We're going to make some tough decisions next year. And we um there's
029materials that we would have typically buy that we're not going to buy. There's lots of things um that we're just going to be really tight next year regardless. And the boiler could break next year. And [clears throat] we have no discretionary funds for the default budget. Um So, So, maybe we save that in the God forbid something happens. I don't know. I don't know. Should we save the building repair trust fund? Is that it? What? Yeah. Save that for the God forbid because we're in a default budget. We don't have any >> the whole 90. You wouldn't use the I wouldn't assume you would authorize the use of the whole 90 cuz if even if we end at, you know, 230, you could authorize up to 30,000 of the trust fund and cover the rest
030of it. >> Yeah. Um I [clears throat] I definitely wouldn't want to drain the trust fund. To Wendy's point, I don't want drain the maintenance trust fund because we could have something fall through the roof. Like we don't want to drain that. Um I just think you might have to tap into it for a little bit to cover the cost to get it done this summer and just we know that way we know we have a boiler that works. I mean we've had we've had maintenance on these boilers the last couple years. It it We're going to shut down school if we don't have heat. Like there's a lot for pipes. Like there's a lot to risk of just not having a a sturdy boiler. >> Right. And it's not going to get cheaper. And
031it won't get cheaper and oil is not going to get cheaper. Yes, it's about switching it. I mean we have to do it. I mean it's like when your oil guy comes and goes, "Hey." >> [laughter] >> Right. Um you you you have to do it. Yeah. Okay, so so um yeah, my opinion is is do it, use the unassigned fund balance, and then up to 50 from the trust fund. I don't know what you guys think. >> Half. Well, I mean it'll have it'll have >> It's like 90. >> It It will have 90 and you won't be adding anything to it because you'll be using all the fund balance. So then what the after June 30th, we'll get there'll be 50 added, right? So that'll be >> Not if you don't have the
032money. You You won't be adding 50 because you'll be putting that on the boiler. That was That was your plan. Oh, I see what you're saying. So right now your building repairs and maintenance has your trust fund has 90,000 in it and [snorts] you won't be adding any this year if you do this boiler project. Yes. And you were going to add the 50 because you knew you had to replace the boiler I'm saying just do it now with your fund balance and authorize I would recommend, and it is the board's decision. I would recommend you authorize up up to $40,000 from the maintenance trust fund to finish the completion of the boiler project and That's all right. >> I would direct us to use as much of the fund balance as we can. Yeah.
033So that you don't take it you we won't take extra [clears throat] out of the maintenance repair trust fund if we don't have to. Yeah. Sure. >> That's what I think. >> Yeah. Yeah. Up to This 40 sound good? Okay. I was going to say 45 but I was going to say 40. >> going to say, too. Yeah. So I mean you could do up to 45 and just tell us don't use what you don't have to use and this and we will We're going to get the financials. We're going to report back to you. We're going to say this is how much we're requesting to trust you to release and this is where we stand with the final Okay. So let's say up to 45 then. Let's do that. Yeah. Let's do Let's do
034it dangerous. Okay. So we just need a motion from the board to allow Mike to go ahead to work with the >> make that motion to allow Mike to go ahead with No. How about make a motion to approve the boiler project as presented to EAI. Do we have to say the specific With FY26 funds. FY26 funds we will use to fund the boiler project and approve up to $45,000 from the trust fund should we need it. Yeah. We just need They need to be separate motions. Okay. The trust fund has to be a standalone motion. Do we have to say which of the two boilers we're voting on, too? A or B? The Crest or the Oh, yeah. Oh, Crest. >> Yes. And Crest. >> Yes. Yes. That's a great point, Wendy. Okay. So
035it's seconds. Well, let's clarify the motion. Let's clarify the motion. >> do it again. Okay. So I >> [laughter] >> I would like to make a motion that we use what we need of the fund balance to fund the Crest boiler boiler um and that's it. Just clarify FY26 funds. >> From the FY26. Yes. And yeah. Okay. As presented. >> As presented. >> Yep. Okay. Second. Very good. Okay. All in favor? I. Then you have the other one. The second, no. >> [laughter] >> I would like to make a motion to authorize the use of up to $45,000 of the trust fund if needed. >> For the maintenance and repair If needed. All right. Second. Second. Okay. All in favor? I. Fantastic. Okay. Thank you. Thank you, Mike. And thanks the board for their patience
036through all of the facility update promises I made. Great. >> [snorts] >> I don't know why they keep moving. Okay. Let me get back to my agenda. Where is she? [snorts] There she [clears throat] is. Okay. So, that was our facilities update. Okay. Business and financials is next. Okay. So, the financials are I mean, the manifests are over there. Um if you want to sign those. Yes. Did you already do that? >> Yep. So, included in your board pack is a current year financial. Now, we did tell all the schools that the last day for purchase requisitions was Let me just calendar here. Friday, April 24th, which is the Friday right before vacation. Um and so, in order to have your board pack out, we had we the board pack ran on April 21st. So,
037it did run before that last um there might have been a few things that got added after the fact. Um I'm not going to move it. Every time I move it, it shut off. Sorry. So, you should have most everything in here for the for the fiscal year, but you might see a little bit more in your June board pack. Um I did put all the details of the ups and downs. Did anyone have any questions? No questions. Okay, great. And so, um as just a reminder, we will going into the June financial um as Mike was walking out the door, he said he will send over a contract. So, the accountant will add the encumbrance for the boiler project. Um and then we'll see where that puts us. You might see a negative number
038in the June financial because as we close out all the purchase orders, we're going to have our final busing bills, our final electric bills. We're going to It It's going to show a negative because I don't want to take money out of the trust until we know exactly how much we have to take. Okay. Um So, did anyone have any questions on that? And so again, we can't go over our voted appropriation, but the the tiny bit of revenue that we do get helps fund the maintenance. Right. Okay. So, if you want to sign the manifests and pass them back this way, that would be great. I'm just signing them now. Um and and then under general assurances, the general assurances is what um the school board chair and the superintendent sign and assure and
039what it really is the general assurances all the things that you'll do to be appropriate with your entitlement grants, which are your title grants, your IDEA grants. Um and so I just want to thank the board for signing it. We could not go after we we could not go after any of our grants without um the board signing off on the entitlement. Um the general assurances for our grants. Um and we do it every year and this is the standard um general assurances that the board had signed for years. I know there was a hiccup last year with additions. Tho- Those are not there. This is the general assurances that school um school boards have signed for years. And so, um thank you for signing that and it does help Kensington to be able to
040go after the grant funds for sure. Okay. Wonderful. Okay. Principal's report is up next. >> All right, Becky, you're up. Oh, it's Yeah, you're up. So, they have three. Yeah. Or So, let me just scroll on to the principal's report. Is this Um So, a couple things that I um highlighted about First of all, I had sent an email with the picture to the three of you as a follow-up from last month's um principal's report, which was about growth mindset. Um and I just had to share that picture of >> [clears throat] >> um one of our first graders who kind of took her knowledge of um growth mindset with the book that she was reading and then wanted to make changes so that the the little kitten's eyes aren't open yet was just maybe
041the cutest thing I had ever seen and I just wanted to share that with all of you. >> I absolutely loved it, Becky. >> [clears throat] >> Um so, the first thing that I wrote about was the first grade celebration of learning. Um and I know Shannon is still in the audience and she can pipe in um if she wants to, but it really is the highlight of the year for our first graders um when they put those eggs in the incubator and they wait anxiously for 21 days for them to have to pip and hatch. Um and the learning that's involved in the unit is just amazing. It's a just a lovely integrated unit of science and reading and research and writing. Um and the kids are just so excited to be able to
042share all of that with their families. Shannon, do you want to jump in and say anything about this year's journey with the chicks? Um no, we had We had a really good year with the chicks and the kids absolutely loved them and then we had one um family who had given us some eggs to hatch because I don't have roosters at my house anymore. It's taking some of the chicks and the rest are going to live in Cockingham Palace Oh. at this my school at Ismith's Corner. Oh, they just have baby goat goats at Ismith's Corner. My son's going to teach them objectives. Oh, really? That's exciting. Um, and all of their birthday pictures were taken on the wall, so if you wanted to see all of the chicks and their names, Turbo, Hershey, Oreo,
043they're all on the birthday wall if you want to check them out on the way out. Um, I wrote again a little bit more about the birth mindset and highlighting our spring student-led conferences, so those are held each fall and spring, and students are really in the driver's seat of the conferences. It looks a little different at each grade level, as you might expect kindergarten looks a little different than fifth grade, but every student is able to share what we call the glow and a grow with their families at the conferences, and they're able to really highlight some of the things that they've learned. They're able to reflect on some of the things that they still need to get better at here at school, but it's it's been a nice shift, I think, to our
044conferences to really have students be part of them. And then generally teachers and families get a couple minutes kind of at the end of the the conferences to have some adult conversations if needed as well, so I I think it's just been a nice model that we've had at Kensington for the last couple couple years. Um, and then the last paragraph is about bike week. Sorry, Molly, that you didn't know it was bike week for three days to ride bikes and they can bring it in tomorrow. Um, so yeah, so we've had a beautiful first few days of bike week, but again, one of the favorites for the kids of the year is the chance where they get to bring their bikes to school and their scooters to school, and they can ride with their
045friends at recess around the parking lot. All of the teachers park around the the of the parking lot, and we set up cones in the middle, and then they also can ride on the track around the playground. Um and then um new this year, the there was a group of uh families who went to the Kensington Rec Department, and they wanted to start what they're calling a bike bus, so that once a week um students can ride to school safely under the supervision of an an adult, cuz we all know, especially right on 150 with some of those sharp sharp corners, it's not necessarily the safest um so this was a way that families thought that they could put a bus together a bike bus together, and be able to help supervise getting kids um
046to school safely. So, we'll let you know how that goes. That's awesome. Is it You said once they're going to do that once a week? Once a week on Tuesdays, starting next Tuesday. It was originally supposed to start this morning, but I they they're starting it next Tuesday. Um so it'll be on Tuesday mornings um until the end of the school year. Yeah, there's just making sure Molly knows. No, but there's not a stop at the end of my street. That's okay. Did you say that they did that in coordination with the Rec Department? They did. [snorts] Yeah. So, I went to the Rec Department meeting with this group of um families that were proposing it um just so that, you know, they had the blessing of the Rec Department as well. Um and they
047put maps out, I think on I think on Facebook. Um just so families knew the different routes that were going around town. Yeah, it might be a good suggestion to have them put something up on Kensington Connects about heads-up drivers on Tuesdays Yeah. around 8:00. You know, so that they know. Yeah, that's a great idea. Um the Kensing They've also met with the Kensington Police Department to get their blessing on the project as well, and the Police Department did offer to support um Um, the kids and riders on those Tuesday mornings. Good. Nice. That's >> So, I can also ask the police department to maybe put something up on their Facebook page on Tuesdays just reminding drivers. And I'm I'm up early a lot and I often see them right here. Mhm, by the school
048early. So, that's good, too. Yeah. Great. >> [snorts] >> All right, thank you so much, Becky. That's great. >> Becky, Becky. Mhm, thanks. [clears throat] All right, back to the agenda. I think committee reports is up next. >> Yeah. Yes, all right. So, committee Are we doing reassignments or is that just in the packet? >> That That is Renee didn't take that off. I apologize. Okay. No worries. All right, so policy, what do you got? >> [snorts] >> Um, nothing dramatic. Um, I mean, the first one was about the communication devices, um, and it's just an update of that. Um, you know, the the one thing that hit me, which I thought was interesting, too, is they're trying to take the the onus off the teachers in in, um, you know, being the ones to
049slap the kids on the hand, so to say, if something happens and giving it more to the SAU. Um, and then, of course, as technology develops, there's going to be Now, they're concerned about wearables. Mhm. Um, but obviously, at this level, it hasn't really been a situation. It's more the middle school and high school. Right. So, anyhow, but that was just a basic revision. Um, same with the guidance and, you know, the counseling. Um, everything, actually, was just revisions. Um, you know, how how we do it, you know, in a in a systematic way, once a year. Um, one question I had, um, there was a policy in regards to wellness, nutrition, and physical education. And it brought up um wellness committees. And do we have a wellness committee at KES? The SAU 16 has
050a wellness committee, when the KES has a representative on it. Okay. All right. Yeah, I was I was unclear on that. So, yeah, so nothing earth-shattering in the policy department. All right. So, I will make a motion to accept the following policies as written: JICJ, JLD, JLCJA, JLCF, and JICBB. Second. All in favor? Aye. All right. 24 15. Uh safety and security updates? Next week. Okay, great. Um superintendent evaluation committee, um we're meeting on Friday to discuss the um the the evaluations that are coming in from all of the different boards, which we will do in we're going to have to do it in nonpublic at this meeting. Which you you two are prepared for, I can tell. I'm totally prepared. >> [laughter] [gasps] >> As long as I can go to the bathroom first.
051I think that should be fine. Um okay, it won't take too I already put some stuff in it. Oh, did you do it? Oh, you just did it yourself like that? Yeah, well, yeah. >> just jumped right in. That's fine. >> I had to get authorization. >> [laughter] >> But That's all right. We can look at what you wrote. Okay, I didn't write a lot. It's fine. It's fine. Okay, so that is that update we meet on Friday. Um any general correspondence? Um general correspondence, I don't think the board was on I don't think the board was on any of them. Um the the the superintendent got a right to know regarding um uh activities of a neighbor. We have nothing to share. Um but I don't think the board was on that. That was
052just the superintendent. If that does come to anything, I'll let you know. Um we get a lot of right to knows. We We get a lot of right to knows. Um this was specific about Kensington's elementary school and if we had any information um regarding a neighbor and we have none. And we >> Like a a physical neighbor? Yeah, like um smoke and bonfires. >> I know all about that. >> Yeah, so we don't have any records. We don't keep records on our neighbors. We wouldn't have time if we wanted to. >> Yeah, exactly. But um it was a right to know and we're doing our due diligence thing and just double-checking. But that was really I think the only correspondence that is worth noting this month for the board. Okay. Great, thank you. Um
053community news submission. >> Not yet. It's like in a couple weeks. >> Yeah, couple weeks. The 15th? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, well I got to put some other things in that Becky talked about tonight. I love that especially that picture she sent us. I love that so much. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah. Yeah, cool. Okay, thank you. And then strategic plan committee, I have an update on that. Um okay, any new business? No. Um new business? Uh no. Okay. Any old business? I don't think we've ever had any old business. We have the uh um resume for that nurse. She looks terrific. Yeah. Yes, that is impressive. All right, any people-related matters? Any people-related matters? No, for the board. No. And then uh last We do have a new We do have a new kindergartner starting. Yep.
054Like now? Yep. Cool. Okay. Okay. Um okay, and then personnel. Yeah. So you you you Becky has a nurse she's nominating. Fantastic. Um and just approval from the board to accept the nomination for hire. Um that's really what it that's what I need there. And um I'm also asking the board to give the um superintendent [clears throat] authorization to hire for the next few months. Okay. Um we might have some other um staffing needs that are going to pop up. Um and so I'm just I'm wondering if the board considered making that motion tonight instead of June. Okay. Um and just allowing the superintendent to hire from now until August knowing that the all the board will be abreast of any situation and hires and I'll always communicate um and one of the reasons why
055I'm asking tonight is that I won't be at the June board meeting but we'll talk about that after we talk about the hires. Okay. Okay. Okay. Um this looks great to me. This the nurse is Yeah, she's terrific. Yeah, she is Yeah, she is wonderful. It was a kind of a unanimous decision from our local committee and then I know she met with the superintendent's office just prior to break. Um so we're really excited to be able to bring her on board. This obviously hasn't been made public cuz it was coming tonight to the board. So once um we get the approval then we can make that public announcement. Great. Okay. Is this a motion? Yeah, it is a motion to A motion to accept the nomination of the nurse. Christine Christine Patrick Patrick All
056right. I will second. All in favor? I I Okay. That's good news. She's coming from the DEA. Yeah, cool. Um and under the matter still but um so next in June I won't be here. I have to fly to Oregon. My daughter's having surgery. Oh. So a couple options for the board. Um, we could reschedule. Um, or Becky is going to be here in person in June, Molly's in person in June, and another member of SLT can come for June. Um, we haven't made the board agenda yet, and that is something under your purview. But, in June, there's a couple things we do. We look at the board calendar for next year and discuss uh an a summer workshop. Um, we are going to go over the report card committees um results, which Becky was
057at every committee, and she can report out on those. Um, and then we ask permission for the superintendent to hire. So, those were the And then whatever else you guys want to put on the board agenda. But, just looking at past Junes, Yeah. That's what we do. Do you want a motion to let the superintendent hire now? That way it's out of the Yeah, that I just want to check that off. >> Oh, sure. I'd like to make a motion to allow the superintendent to hire over the next 2 and 1/2 or 3 months until school opens next year, uh understanding that if there's anything we need to know, we'll be contacted. Great. All right. Second? All in favor? Aye. Aye. Thank you. Thank you. And then, are you guys comfortable with me having a
058sub at the June meeting? Does that feel right? >> would that be? >> fine with that? Uh I'm going to ask SLT tomorrow. I'm fine with it. I talked to Becky about it. She Becky's comfortable with it. Um, and I I'm I I'm always available by email. I can give you any information you want remotely. You want a report, you want a budget, I can get you >> Yeah. anything you need. >> Don't even think about it. Go take care of it. >> Yeah, I just it's just But, I think we need to know who the sub is going to be. Right. I will let I will I will let you know who's covering the meeting after tomorrow. Um, but again, Becky and I talked about it, and she's really comfortable. >> Yeah, and I
059and legally I have my my superintendent certification, so legally I can cover the meeting, but >> I know. So, do I have to say I can't cover my meeting. You can't cover your own meeting. Um, so [clears throat] are you guys okay with just keeping your date knowing that someone else will be here and I'm available remotely? Great. >> Okay. Awesome. >> All right. Okay. All right, I think I can get back in. >> 2nd, right? And if you guys want to go Yeah, June 2nd. Yes. Is it June 2nd? Okay. Great. So, um, yeah, that's everything. Um, we just need to go into a non-public and can you tell me what So, you are going to go what I would recommend um Chris Moore Yeah, it's it's I I think it's C. C? Yep.
060Okay. All right, we will now go into a non-public session under chapter 91 and non-public I'll show them right. C. [laughter] All right. Second. Second. >> Second. Okay. Wendy. Okay. Roll call vote. Cheryl McDonough, yes. Stephanie Swit, Wendy. Yes. Yes. Yes. Jesus.
