Hi there. I'm Tanya Nevie. I am the principal of Exit High School. >> And I'm Kathy Nukem. I'm the director of school counseling. >> We'd like to walk you through an updated process for our course selection and ad drop. Exit high school has a scheduling process that is intentional and student- centered. It involves teachers, counselors, students, and caregivers. Following the procedures below makes it possible to build a workable master schedule and causes fewer disruptions to student learning. This video explains how course selection works and when you can request a schedule change. So, let's talk about the recommendation process. Students will review the program of studies to learn about graduation requirements and course options with school counselors. For some, this process has already started and will continue through the month. Teachers will make course level recommendations
in Alma based on each student's readiness and performance and students will build their schedules from those recommendations. If a student disagrees with the recommendation, the student will need to discuss the concern with the current teacher and request an override form to change their course selection. Students may also meet with their school counselor to select courses that support their goals. And we encourage caregivers to talk with your children about their choices before submitting final course selections. This piece is important. Once schedules are finalized, changes are limited. Once a student has selected their courses this spring, their selections are final while the master schedule is constructed. There will still be another opportunity to discuss your child's schedule, so don't worry. We just cannot make changes until the master schedule is built. In June, your child will receive
a course verification form. Please check it carefully to make sure everything is correct. If you notice an error, please have your child schedule an appointment with their counselor before the school year ends. It's important to note that schedule changes will not be made over summer. During this time, schedules are balanced and finalized. So, let's talk about the ad drop period. When school starts again in the fall, students will have another opportunity to adjust their schedule if necessary. We will go over that in a moment. The ad drop window starts on the third day of classes and lasts for 7 days each semester. Schedule changes are considered only during this time and only for specific reasons. The approved reasons for a schedule change include that a student was placed in the wrong course, a graduation or
prerequisite requirement was missed, a student has a duplicate class or a missing period in their schedule, a student wants to add a class to replace a study hall if space is available. a student has a documented medical IEP or 504 that requires a specific change or there was a school scheduling conflict or error that occurred. Here are the reasons that a schedule change cannot be approved. Wanting a different teacher or a different class period, including periods 1 and seven for seniors. Wanting to be in the same class or lunch as your friends. changing your mind after the class has already started so you can see why it's very important to make careful decisions during the initial course selection process. We'd like to now discuss an important change to Vlax or other online courses. If Exit
High School offers a course required for graduation and that course can fit into a student's schedule, the student may not substitute it with an online course, nor can they drop an EHS course to enroll in an online course. We will only accept VLAX and other online courses if we do not offer a class or if there is a scheduling conflict on our end. Here are some important things to know about making changes. You may request one schedule change meeting per semester, so come prepared with all of your requests for that meeting. Of course, exceptions are made for school errors. Also, please note that dropping a class after the add drop deadline, which is the 10th day of classes, results in a W on your transcript. A W simply means withdrawal. Remember, if a course is
required for graduation and can fit into a student's EHS schedule, the student may not substitute it or drop a course to enroll in an online course, including Vlax. Students who elect to take an online course that EHS does not offer or due to an irresolvable conflict within the EHS master schedule must do so by October 1st for first semester classes and January 30th for second semester classes. Your school counselor is always your first stop if you have questions or concerns about your schedule. This course selection process is designed to ensure that every student is placed in courses that are appropriate, balanced, and aligned with graduation requirements and future goals. By taking time to make thoughtful choices during course selection and understanding how schedule changes work, families can help us create a master schedule that supports
high-quality learning for all students. And it also helps us ensure adequate staffing for those courses. Our goal is to partner with you and to keep students challenged, supported, and on a clear path to graduation. If you would like to review any of this information, your child will get a copy and you can also find the program of studies on the website. Thank you so much.
