but will be approved when the agenda is adopted this is possible since members of the governing board receive the agenda along with backup materials at least 24 hours prior to the meeting and have time to review and consider all items prior to the agenda being adopted members of the governing border audience may ask that an item be removed from the consent agenda and brought to the floor for discussion at the appropriate place on the agenda i would like to offer the agenda as posted with the following exception g5 will move to the approval section as the first item under approval does any member of the governing board wish to have an additional item removed from the consent agenda any member of the audience seeing none mrs greenberg may i have an emotion to oh oh
mrs bacon me we switched quarters mrs bacon may i have a motion to approve the meeting agenda and recommending consent agenda items g1 to g4 and g6 to g22 so moved all those in favor say aye aye any opposed motion passes unanimously next on the agenda is governing board statements mrs greenberg yes earlier this week i had the opportunity to attend the steam event at sunrise middle school and um as usual i was great to be back in person and um [Music] we and it was just it was lovely there were dancers there was culinary there were um the um artwork that had been in the sights and sounds and then um the other in the gym there were uh the science projects which were extraordinary as someone who deals quite a bit with medical
lit and hypotheses and things like that it was interesting to see what the students had come up with and what they found in the course of their research and as always it was great to see the robotics team so i want to give a shout out to sunrise it's a great evening thanks okay um i wanted to say i also went to the steam event at sunrise and it was great to see all of those projects they were very in-depth projects that these science students put forth so i was impressed with with all of that um additionally i was able to attend the cte signing day and i saw some of our deca students there at that event where students were celebrated seniors were celebrated who are continuing on in the cte fields as they
move forward in their careers in college and it was really great there were 48 seniors there and something that i was very impressed by was that so far this year our cte students have earned 451 certifications through our cte programs which is amazing so [Applause] so i'm very excited about our cte programs additionally i was able to attend the pvea prom boutique which is always fun and just a really really moving place to be and to be able to see what our teachers have put together for students and really made me think about and be proud that our teachers noticed a need in our district as a hurdle that some students were not able to attend prom for lack of having outfits and things like that and took it upon themselves several years ago to
start this program and just made it a little bit easier for those kids to be able to participate in something that means a lot to them and so i'm just really proud that our teachers did that for our kids and that's what uh that's what our district is about is trying to remove those hurdles and and be there for the students and uh give them what they need so thank you mrs case sorry she looked at me earlier and i didn't look up um i just want to say when desert elementary second graders just said the pledge did you feel the electricity in the air wasn't that wonderful i love it when children help lead the pledge because it just changes everything these kids are so wonderful um i am going to miss the next
two school board meetings but i have happy news for the next time we have a school board meeting the second one in april um my daughter our youngest seventh child is graduating from college and so we will be at those i might be able to attend via uh internet for part of the meeting i don't know what all the festive festivities are yet but that's really exciting and then the next week that two weeks later i'll still be out of town and i'll be out of the country with said graduate now let me go back to the graduate i have to she's become a writer and she just is getting published at the at the school she's at and i was asking her i said well and i named her sixth grade teacher i said
did she help you become a writer well yeah but it was really and then she named the teacher in high school he's a run that really got me to love to write and how to write and i just have to give kudos to this district for what they have given to my children because i'm seeing that result and i'll never forget the bee she got from this incredible teacher at the beginning of the year you had to turn in something when you started and she retook english because she wanted to get into a certain school so she got a b and that tipped the score but that really hard teacher taught her so much and i am so grateful because she literally loves to write and it's amazing what our teachers in our district can
instill so i just wanted to share that moment with you since i will be out of town but um happy times and thank you to all the teachers in pv who have helped so many children achieve their dreams and become and and to rise to their full potential so thank you mrs case i'd just like to say congratulations on your final child finishing college that must be a good feeling all right next on the agenda is dr bales uh with rewards and recognitions thank you president mature it's always a pleasure to highlight students and staff and uh for their success and our appreciation and mr drogie will emcee our honors tonight thank you good evening president matura governing board members dr bales members of cabinet and attendees both in person and virtual tonight we have

ready for first grade and beyond she has an unheard amount of patience and helps her students navigate the complexities of being in a school setting she encourages the best from her students and helps everyone feel valuable her approach to teaching struggling learners is magical and inventive she makes learning fun and creative she certainly deserves to be the pva props recipient this month she's had an incredible year and she's taken every day with patience and kindness and i think i've already spoken about my ability to derail a classroom of kindergarteners in a half a second and i'm going to tell you that this classroom was so calm and so quiet i did show up while they were looking at snails so they may not have been all that interested in this award but they were so
sweet and so quiet i cannot believe the magic that kindergarten teachers do every day but hers her classroom blew me away was amazing i'm so proud to be michelle's colleague and so proud that she is one of the amazing professionals in paradise valley she was not able to be here tonight but um please join me in celebrating her and all the kindergarten teachers in this district thank you [Applause] and that concludes awards and recognitions thank you next on the agenda is called the public we are about to convene call to the public which allows the public the opportunity to address the board although state law does not require that we hold a call to the public we have chosen to do so because we believe it is crucial for us to hear from our community
about concerns and issues having said that please note that the board is here to listen call to the public is not designed to be a discussion due to arizona open meeting law the governing board cannot respond to discuss or take any action on items brought up during this time however staff members may be directed to get back to you to address your individual concerns additionally i want to remind you that in lieu of speaking tonight you may choose to submit written comments to the board by completing a public comment form on the district homepage all comments submitted by noon today have been provided to each governing board member and to the superintendent's office in advance of tonight's meeting tonight we have seven people who have submitted comment cards prior to the start of the meeting
each speaker will have three minutes for remarks those who have asked to speak on agenda items will be recognized at the appropriate time during the meeting as a reminder the point of this and every board meeting is to accomplish the business at hand and to be able to do so openly and collaboratively all in attendance are expected to observe our meeting rules as well as rules of politeness and decorum so that we may serve as an example to our students that issues can be discussed in a respectful and civil manner please state your first and last name when you come to the podium our first speaker is lily gresham and our next speaker will be kristen mcafee thank you my name is uh lily gresham and um first i wanted to say thank you for
to the board and especially to dr carson for reaching out to me last week um about my concern at the last meeting where i spoke about the human growth and development curriculum and he contacted me and we had a really nice long conversation and was very receptive to feedback and so thank you for that the second thing i wanted to say is kind of a follow-up on that um the permission slips that were sent out for that particular program or um was very misleading and very inaccurate um it's a two-page thing um it was a it was a big problem because um nobody seemed to understand if it was a class if it was a video where it was going to be taught who is it going to be taught to was it going to
be in science class the i printed out the um the permission slip and it says your son or daughter will have the opportunity to receive instruction in a unit entitled human growth and development and then it says the topics to be included are you know it lists a whole bunch of things but um that's inaccurate because all it is is access to a video an 18 minute video that that i saw on on the computer on google classrooms and it says that this um um this curriculum will be taught lessons between april 21st and may 25th now i don't understand that it doesn't make any sense i mean is that a how how are these topics going to be included how is it going to be taught it's basically just a video so the fact
that parents needed to sign a permission slip and um which i didn't do in time so i called the school and tried to give them a verbal permission and they wouldn't accept that so i had to actually print it out sign it and drive it over there and then i realized it's just the video that's all there was to it so what is what is even the point okay that's that then the third thing i wanted to say is um on the adoption committee for um the ela um i'd like to be on that um it's is that too late hopefully it's not too late the adoption committee um for the community review of a curriculum and one more thing is that how could they how could the adoption committee even approve the curriculum where
the legislature has like just approved a bunch of bills that limit um what can be taught and how it can be taught because the objectives of the school board and the district um [Music] are in opposition to the the the bills that are passed um at the bottom of the of the paper that says according to ars this scenario there's so many things have been crossed out of um what um what is supposed to be taught okay that's all thank you okay we have uh kristen mccaffer can't read mcphee so if this is something with sales or trying to offer curriculum or things like that that needs to go through a different department cannot be presented directly to the board uh okay i'm here to speak uh so yeah are you here as a parent
uh or you're soliciting sharing solicitation made us a gift i understand uh are you going to ask us for something in return i'm not asking for anything if you want it you want it if you don't you don't you know okay go ahead so so about me i'm excited to be here today i want to say first off you all did a great job at the beginning with the um with the engagement right so i've traveled across the country i'm from chicago um i went to asu and uh so i'm an author i wrote some great books um but more importantly than the books is the knowledge behind it um you know i've been taking these cool selfies which is why my book is about superintendents take the best selfies um so i've been able
to take who selfies with the state superintendent the um secretary of education you know all these cool people when i'm working with them so that's why i say you know either way i'm all right um but i didn't always start that way i struggled in school i was a slacker and my dad forced me to read um and now it's pretty cool because i'm writing books like you all mentioned and uh and it's about social emotional learning civics fun um and it's really to bring engagement right and to make you all the heroes so i created school district hashtag rocks which is teaching the kids about the board um i created superintendents take the best selfies teachers association nfts and uh it's all it's all about taking action in my opinion like i met the
um pinot county superintendent right and i only learned these things you know in my 30s because i decided to become a sub and get engaged for my daughter and then i learned oh it's the districts i already know as a district superintendent but then i learned it's a regional superintendent state superintendent you know and it's a you know national superintendent and i would say you know five percent of the population knows that right which in my opinion right it was beautiful children up here right and we want them to replace us right in these positions so that's why i'm passionate right that's why i try to travel the country right because you know education is global right and uh yeah it's just this is very important that we create the next devin booker right of
education or the next uh who else larry fitzgerald you know beyonce right of education it's very important right i tell my daughter that you're going to be the next state superintendent you're going to be the next you know national superintendent so i i just believe that you know it's so important that we um give them that so thank you all right next up is uh wendy mahler and then philip zane good evening president matura board and committee members probably said that wrong sorry um i'm here to speak tonight again about the ap literature um you'll probably hear in the next coming weeks that slaughterhouse five will be green lighted meaning that it will be approved for the ap students to read without parental consent now i'm asking that it be changed to where it's coated
yellow so parents are given consent and one of the reasons why is because on the american library association for 20 years it was on the top 100 list of being one of being one of the most um controversial books not that this book is so graphic but let me just give you some plot points that uh this is about so it's a little sci-fi um the main character he has two children upon his daughter's wedding he's kidnapped by aliens and the aliens also kidnap porn star and the aliens want to put them in a zoo type setting and they want them to mate and then the two actually fall in love and have a kid as well so it's outside of marriage and then that porn star somehow had committed suicide but ended up with
the aliens i don't know why um so then he gets transported back to earth and he lands in new york city in a porn pornographic store watching a video in the video of is of the the porn star that he was with um so basically this might be not too graphic but these are the subjects that it's talking about in this book so it would be nice for parents just to have the choice to know that it's there and if they choose to have their kid read it's fine um again um from 1990 to 99 this was the sixth 63rd 67th entry on the most frequently challenged book and again from 2000 to 2009 it was number 46. so i don't want to see any more controversy in the district about this i don't know
if anyone will complain about it later or not but i'm just giving a fair warning that this is in the book um that's it thanks phillip zane and then lori berman good evening everyone superintendent and everybody from here all the way around and everybody from behind me it's a navajo way and um glad to be here for this opportunity and to start out with we have been living in the midst of this pandemic ever since it arrived and it's hit everybody one way or another good but that's the situation that it has caused and what a way how to start a child just entering school in the midst of all of this and the school environment because of it was not very friendly either being introduced to a online starting school and where right from
the onset having this child and take classes interaction and attempt to interact with the teacher but it failed and one of the problems that we saw at the beginning was that we know kids at that age had a very short attention span and when she wasn't very attentive within that one hour that was she was given that day the teacher just put the plug boom you're gone so it kept going on this time and because of that i have read or some studies that's already been done two year period with living in this environment has caused kids at that young age behind basically two years of starting everything all over again and tried to the child i'm talking about is adopted child not a biological child so i have a concern when i saw that
happening and i talked to the principal i talked to the vice principal talked to the teacher okay at the beginning at the onset of the school this school year she got referred to the office about three or four times for her behavior so i didn't see it right so i talked to you who ever i wanted to talk to and say hey what's going on how what do you see in this child and then come to find out that everybody matters supposedly has a contract with the school district to do and provide um some a service for a special special needs and we were not aware of it until months later so without our knowledge she was referred so you need to have someone looking to philip i'll have dr jairus follow up if you
provide your contact information to him and he will follow up with you i've got more had more to say so thank you thank you okay lori berman and then jessica crane good evening board members president matura cabinet in person and virtual attendees what a great performance tonight and congratulations to the students who were recognized that was amazing i want to thank you all for your time and energy that you give to our district you all put in a lot of hours time and sleepless nights to help our community evolve into the leader in education that we have become known for you are all appreciated to our district volunteers and staff thank you for your time and energy that you give to our schools and our families there are some who give many hours and some
who give a few but it takes all of us working together with kindness and understanding working towards the common goal of providing the best educational environment for all of our students regardless of their race religion ethnicity sexual orientation gender and abilities i want to give you an update on all the things that you that your united parent council outreach team has been doing it is my honor to be volunteering for my 13th year at our schools and in the pvusd district did you know that the upc outreach team is only three years old we started our committee and had just begun to gather information about the needs of our parent groups schools and families across the district when covet hit but that didn't stop us in fact it propelled us forward we provided 20 thanksgiving
meals being sorted in my driveway thanks dr jairus for helping and 50 winter holiday meals to our very own families in 2020 we also had a lot of discussions and virtual meetings to assist the parent groups this year we were able to provide 50 thanksgiving meals and 50 winter holiday meals to our families we have developed a great relationship with safeway albertsons that we hope will continue for many years we have also developed many relationships across the district with our parent groups by assisting with development of bylaws standard practices personnel issues fundraising and the list goes on we did two appreciation breakfasts for our transportation department and we have one more surprise for them coming but don't tell them we helped to provide resources and ideas to our parents for staff and teacher appreciation week
did you know that on average we each put in about 20 hours a week with meetings preparations calls and the execution of our events this is in addition to our paid jobs other volunteer commitments and taking care of our own families and just yesterday in partnership with our special education upc committee we provided over 350 appreciation bags to our para educators thank you to our para educators for all you do every day for all of our students these are just a few examples of how your upc outreach committee has worked within our district we look forward to connecting with our communities through recognition events support of our students families staff and our district thank you all right we have jessica crane and then robin shop good evening president matura governing board members dr bales and
cabinet tonight i would like to highlight one of the events that laurie just mentioned that showcased the strength of pv schools community to come together for a common goal in this case the appreciation and celebration of some multi-talented individuals on our pv campuses yesterday april 6 was national paraeducator day united parent council's outreach and special education committees joined forces to organize a district-wide appreciation day for our 350 paraeducators in tv para educators are an integral part of each school community their hard work and hearts make it possible for students to achieve their personal best these hard-working individuals help to ensure the students with ieps receive what they need to be successful in the classroom setting paraeducators help students to form relationships with their peers and to navigate the school community para educators are often a
source of safety trust and positivity in student stays and para educators not only benefit the students that they work with directly but also all of the students on the campus as well as help to create a positive school culture on behalf of the outreach and special education committees of united parent council i would like to thank the pv community for their generous donations thank you to the paradise valley education association 14 pv school parent groups pv principals the pv special education department community partners safeway and portillos individual donors three pv art teachers on three three campuses who helped us to have students decorate these lovely bags for para educators um and the upc reps who all came together to celebrate our incredible pve schools paraeducators i would like to leave you with a definition of
paraeducator as written by one of those tv students on the bag that they decorated paraeducator a multitasking educational rock star who lives to inspire and loves to encourage they're kind of a big deal thank you [Applause] okay and robin shope good evening all i'm here because my son has been bullied on the bus all year long and this last thursday he it came to a head where i said he's not riding the bus at least not until this situation is resolved the reason well another child decided to bring a gun on the bus and point it at my son's head and my son was so scared it took hours to calm him down by the time i finally calmed him down to so i could figure out what was going on it was too late
to call transportation or the school so they both got called they both i went to the school first thing friday morning and reported it to the principal um they said they would research it and then i i got home and i called transportation they too said they would research it i got a call back from the principal on friday afternoon saying oh it was just a toy gun so we're just going to suspend them from the bus for a couple of days my son's life was threatened he did not know that that was a toy gun as a matter of fact that kid told him it was a real gun so what is he supposed to think he's been traumatized over this situation not to mention the other kids on the bus you know i
understand it's a toy gun but he was in real danger or he thought he was in real danger and i am not i i just can't put his life in danger to make him ride the bus so i change my schedule work and i'm taking him to school and picking them up until the situation is resolved you know i know the bus drivers are very busy i know their primary thing is to take the kids to and from school get them home but isn't it their job also to protect the children safety of our kids if it's not then whose job is it because it's not just my child that could have been hurt on that bus that day it could have been all those other kids and so i plead to figure out what
we need to do because as a mother i can't tell my kid to get back on the bus why would i want to i i've reported it to the police and their their supposedly um they gave me a report number miss shope would you please provide your contact information to mrs herbert who's in the back of the room and she'll be happy to follow up with you we will follow up um she's outside dr jairus would you yeah thank you mrs wilcox we'll meet you thank you mishu okay uh next on the agenda is dr bales with superintendent comments good evening because the mature governing board members cabinet guests thank you i want to start by sending my thanks to quail run first graders for inviting me to speak on march 31st about my role
in the community last week it's always a great day to start visit in our schools and witness firsthand the wonderful things that our students and staff are doing i had the pleasure of joining phoenix mayor kate gallego who also spoke to our students about her role in the community i'd like to extend my thanks to her for supporting our students in pv schools i'd like to like to extend my thanks to our community allowing me to express our deepest appreciation for their continued support the support has allowed us to continue offering high quality instruction meaningful educational opportunities and dynamic learning experiences the support of our voters is also allowed for our facilities to properly match the level of instruction and potential of our students there were several construction items approved in the consent portion of
tonight's agenda that will take place this summer each of the last several meetings we have approved different items in nearly every campus will be touched this summer with some summer project you'll see more of these projects as moving forward painting remodels furniture and more all contributing to the success of our students offering them updated spaces to collaborate learn and grow thank you to our community in pv schools we engage inspire and nurture students through high quality instruction meaningful educational opportunities and dynamic learning experiences this is our mission one of those experiences is our gifted preschool yes pv schools is expanding its gifted preschool program to include sonoran sky elementary school for the 22-23 school year sarah noren sky now joins desert trails fireside in north ranch elementary schools offering this gifted preschool experience the gift
to preschool program at sonoran sky will provide an enriched learning environment for gifted and talented students across our districts in this setting students will participate in age-appropriate learning experiences with a focus on developing their creativity their critical thinking and problem-solving skills learning learn more about this program at pbschools.net forward slash preschool pb schools is currently reviewing our curriculum materials for english language arts grades seven through twelve and the adoption committee composed of teachers administrators and parents is now seeking community feedback as part of that community review process for more information on this community review visit pbschools.net finally congratulations goes out to our hard-working staff committed to responsible management of public funds pb schools was recently awarded the asbo international certificate of excellence and financial reporting for fiscal year 21 annual comprehensive financial report this award
puts the stamps of approval on our commitment to transparency and high quality financial reporting thank you to ms berrigan and her staff for helping us achieve this honor and those are my comments for tonight next on the agenda is items for approval dr bales thank you president mature governing board members cabinet and guests the first item is item g6 moved from the consent agenda to the first item for approval this item recommends the excuse me g5 this item recommends the administrative evaluation instruments for assistant principals principals and central office administrators to summarize any changes in next year's instrument dr holmes [Music] yes there besides dates there are no substantive changes for the evaluation system for the year so we are recommending your approval happy to answer any questions you have first we're going to uh
we have two public comments on this uh first we'd like to hear from wendy muller and then nicole klutwick good evening my name is wendy mahler thank you and with all due respect i would like to object to the use of the school culture of equity in the performance reviews of the principals assistant principals deans and central office administrators to me this seems like crt in evaluating the leaders in this way you have set an expectation in crt and we all know that if you lead from the top it's going to trickle down to the teachers and students thereby instituting these practices i don't know if you can put page 14 up from the principles page on the screen um let me read school culture of equity the principles strive for equity of education opportunity
and culturally responsive practices to promote each student's academic success and well-being um why don't we talk about letter b on this recognize respect and employ each student's strengths diversity and culture as assets for teaching and learning well that's fine but what are you defining as diversity is this a lens of race of culture is this supposed to be racially biased so you're grading the staff as highly effective effective developing and ineffective i'm just curious i'm going to continue for example d develop student policies and address student misconduct in a positive fair and unbiased manner that reflect a restorative practices mindset what is restorative practices mindset it's creating community built on kindness not consequences it's to seek to repair relationships that have been damaged so it's about if a child does something wrong in the class
then they have done that wrong and they're supposed to get a sense of remorse and then so they're the offender and then the victim is the one who gives forgiveness this is what i looked up online is what this definition is so is that so is that what you mean is that what you're grading the principles on um letter e confront and alter institutional biases so you're assuming there's bias student marginalization deficit-based schooling and low expectations associated with race class culture and language gender and sexual orientation and disability or special statuses are we assuming bias and that there's an oppressor and a victim here are we grading these administrators thank you we have that's your time we have uh next speaker will be nicole klutwick and so i have three boys my oldest is a
freshman in college and when he was in young grade school i don't remember second grade-ish maybe first um we were told we don't have time or attention for birthday parties this might seem ill um my brain's skipping a beat but um that might not seem relevant in talking about these evaluations but we were told that anything that's pulling away attention from learning attention from focusing on education specifically including birthdays um is just it's too much and and we can't do it when i look at the policies and procedures that you guys have outlined on asbas um arizona school board association's policy book this is how you say you're going to evaluate principles the governing board shall adopt policies that um well there's a lot of stuff i don't want to take up my whole three
minutes reading it but um include quantitative data on academic progress improve perform principal performance and student achievement um it'll have you know four levels of outcome achieve um achievement you know highly achieve below expectations that kind of thing and overall in instructional program student progress personal curriculum and facilities all of those will be addressed and you have a section for facilities in in this adoption and i do realize this has been around since 2019 my mistake for not paying attention um you have an entire section filled with super political undefined information with no objective way of determining whether or not somebody has actually achieved these things if you take principals and administrators and you take them with their focus if our 15 minutes for birthday parties was too much an entire more than a tenth
of their evaluation being on something that's hyper-political politicized words with no definition in them has to be it has to be worse than having birthday parties so um i don't expect that you're going to change that this time i'm sure you're going to approve it but i do hope that in the future you will at least add definitions measurements when i looked at your performance measures they're a repeating of just what what the crite what what the original indicator is i mean um address matters of equity and social cultural responsiveness in all aspects of leadership i mean is is is even this section very culturally responsive to the current times that we're in it doesn't feel like it thank you okay uh may i have a motion to approve the administrative evaluation systems for the
0492022-2023 school year uh year as presented so moved do we have any questions or comments from the board mr laney um so i wasn't here for last year when this was approved uh how much of this has changed from last year i i don't recall any changes from from last year okay okay 2018. okay the dates the dates were changed the people who are now in the director positions and that sort of thing were changed on the on the form okay i mean like the language in the form and the evaluations and all that hasn't changed okay [Music] mrs case thank you um [Music] so dr bells you would probably know this so it says 2 21 19 is that when this document was put together that would have been the last update to the
document okay because that well there's a i think that 20 and a 21. yeah i can't recall exactly i think that update had more to do with the performance uh the last piece on um performance let me get to that page okay um i can appreciate what you made a comment about definitions but from the definition that i have understood since i've been going to think there was a a nationally it was a somebody from i think san diego that came and talked about restorative practices wasn't he from san diego anyway to me the restorative was well anyway let me just make my comment to me the restorative was um that instead of kicking a kid out of school for 10 days that we help them learn instead of having them miss class isn't that
kind of the gist of the restorative that's part of it that's part of it and and that they've come to understand what they did but we don't want kids in trouble to keep missing more school kind of a deal but they still need to have ramifications for what they did i totally get that but we didn't want to and i re he told some amazing stories and i thought oh this kid this man loves students and he taught a lot of leaders in the district about it and then from my understanding the definitions the new definitions of equity and those kind of things are different than what i've been going to meetings with in this district for a long time they're different definitions and so i just wanted to put that on the record that
the type of things in this evaluation is what we've been doing for years so we want to make sure that there's uh blocks sometimes there's a lot of one social and economical economic students incl in ap classes and there's a whole segment that is left out that's the definition i've been give given about equity that we want all students to have the same opportunity no matter what social economic situation they come no matter what color they are we want them all to have the same opportunities that has been the definition that i have been taught in this district and perhaps we need to put some more definitions in there maybe that's good to clarify things because so much of the things have changed in our nation in looking at those things but that is what
i am when i see those words those are the words that's the way they have been defined to me i just wanted to make that understood because i've gone to lots of different activities uh i'll never forget the time i was at a table and there was a black woman there and she was one of our teachers and she later became a leader and i wrote down some things and i thought oh i look at things differently than i thought i did and it was important for me to understand my own personal view of life and it helped me anyway she and it was mrs white she used to teach her and i remember having that conversation with her and it opened my eyes to some things i didn't know that i had prejudice and
i didn't want to have prejudice but i didn't know that i had them anyway so the definition to me what pv wants to do more than anything is have all children no matter who they are have an opportunity for a good education that to me is equity and we'll have to discuss this later because i don't think you can respond back in this meeting but i as a board member can say something so i'm giving a definition of what i understand that to be and perhaps we do need to have some definitions of those terms because they're being used different now in our society thank you thank you miss case any other comments or questions mr laney since i'm new to this can we add um definitions to this or when we're proving tonight this
will be the final form or yeah this is how it's recommended for the next school year okay and a question um our definitions like this evaluation form doesn't need to contain all of the definitions that we use in our district because we have those defined elsewhere that the teachers would be aware of what the definitions are of words that are used in this instrument are used throughout our district in other parts of the district is that correct well i would i would say that i in in public schools generally there's um there's shared understanding about what all of this means uh and in particular here um you know the the notion that we we value kids we value all kids and and we expect that to be a focus of our of our principles let's
do value all kids oh thanks i just wanted to also say that um words have changed over the you know since this is um since this was last approved and my goal on joining the board was to reduce contention and some of these words in this document can be construed as contentious in today's atmosphere and so that's why i was asking those questions on if we can try and alleviate that so president uh mr elaine governing board members um i think that it's important that uh you maybe have the opportunity to review we can include it in the next update if you have if you're online you can go and look at policy i m b uh that addresses teaching controversial and sensitive materials and issues in our district so that was a policy that
was adopted last fall if i remember right dr courson is at the right imb and you know those do that that policy specifically you know does not allow instruction we're not going to evaluate people on it either does not allow or make part of a course that that uh identifies one race ethnic group or sex or inherently moral morally or intellectually superior in another race ethnic group or sex so all the things that that you see where people writing narratives and definitions that are not consistent with us are addressed in policy that prevent that from happening mrs case um dr bells is this are some of these definitions going to be more plainly spelled out as we're writing as the what can i not the the plan for the future thank you strategic i always
lose that word strategic plan aren't some of those going to be more defined in the worst word smithing in that yeah a little bit later in the in the conversation tonight in the update on strategic planning you'll hear us talk about district initiatives and it's very likely the evaluation instruments such as the administrative instruments and or teaching uh evaluation instruments are revisited uh in the in the near to short-term future uh to align with our strategic plan so yes i do believe that you know these instruments will have an opportunity to be updated uh they've been based on standards these instruments both administrative instruments have been based on islik was a national organization i can't think of all the acronyms now that it's the names it stands for but they were national standards for administration
for many many years the state no longer requires adoption to those standards we we continue to stay with them because they were well-founded on best practices and research for effective leadership but that being said um i do believe mrs case that we'll have the opportunity to revisit these instruments as a result of our strategic planning process um also could you say that the abcs you said at the beginning of where to find that policy that was adopted last fall imb imb yes thank you okay uh we do already have a motion uh all those in favor to approve please say aye aye any opposed uh any abstention i'm opposing i just forgot the word okay all right motion passes four to one uh next on the agenda is consideration and approval of administrative personal actions

received updates in previous study sessions and regular board meetings tonight's emphasis is on our commitments which some people may know as objectives in the strategic planning process dr jarrus will present thank you president matura governing board dr bales cabinet and guest tonight i present you an update to our strategic plan process which was started at the beginning of this year again our goal tonight is to provide you with an update on our strategic goals and commitments as dr bail says reference and to answer any questions you might have regarding our current work as a reminder this is the work of our strategic design strategic design team members which included representation from each of our stakeholder groups and as dr bales just referenced again uh was facilitated by dr connie kam from cam solutions just as
a reminder as to where we've been the governing board previously approved our vision statement every learner empowered for a lifetime of success and our mission statement we engage inspire and nurture students through high quality instruction meaningful educational opportunities and dynamic learning experiences you also approved our value statements which are centered around student focus innovation collaboration integrity growth and respect as part of phase two of our process the design team identified six strategic goal areas around which we will focus our improvement efforts these areas are student experience staff experi student experience staff experience educational environment diversity equity inclusion and optimized resources for each of these areas the design team created a strategic goal with a list of commitments which will help drive our district initiatives to for continuous improvement the first goal is student experience to
provide students with supportive learning environments that include rich academic and extracurricular experiences interventions and programs to prepare them for a successful future this goal was written to encompass the multiple facets of a student's experience that we want to provide them to help our students be successful this includes not only core academic offerings and associated supports but also extracurricular opportunities that can round out a student's experience in our district the design team then created eight commitments align curriculum instruction and assessment to maximize student learning engage students in multi-disciplinary stem learning experiences provide authentic learning experiences and personalized pathways to ensure all students have access to post-secondary education and career opportunities implement multi-tiered systems of support with fidelity at each site to provide interventions for each student's success build trust-based culturally responsive environments that support collaboration and
celebrate risk-taking provides students with special areas electives and extracurricular activities to help help them identify and pursue their passions enhance students agility and resilience in a digital learning environment provide comprehensive programs that meet the wellness of the wellness needs of students the second goal is staff experience foster a supportive and collaborative work environment that makes pb schools an exemplary place to thrive this goal addresses the need to recruit and retain the best employees to help us fulfill our mission our commitment to this goal are to create professional learning opportunities that support individual growth career advancement and organizational excellence recruit hire and retain a qual high quality diverse workforce a high quality and diverse workforce provide the staff with comprehensive wellness programs to support individual and organizational well-being develop and implement mentorship programs for all staff
provide opportunities for staff to meaning meaningfully collaborate with one another our third goal is educational environment support a district-wide culture that promotes a robust equitable educational experience prioritizes relationships among students staff and families and meets learners unique needs to maximize their potential the commitments to this goal are integrate student and staff voice when developing meaningful and equitable educational experiences cultivate trust collegiality and professionalism promote gracious open-minded listening that encourages a compassionate and courageous culture create and maintain welcoming campuses and facilitates facilities district-wide that are safe and appealing create a physically and emotionally safe environment that is inclusive and supports the diverse needs of all learners our fourth goal is community strength build meaningful relationships with new and existing partners to provide opportunities that enrich the lives of our diverse students staff families and community this
goal was written to reflect the valuable opportunities that exist in our relationship with the pb schools community the commitments to this goal are to provide opportunities for students and families to participate in community activities through field trips mentorships externships internships cti cte opportunities athletics fine arts competitions and more offer relevant student experiences through community partnerships that foster school-based service learning activities offer a variety of experiences that grow positive community-based relationships and teach students that they are a valuable member of the community and to provide collaborative opportunities and diverse educational programs for families our fifth strategic goal is diversity uh equity and inclusion to develop resp develop respect and value diverse thinking and experiences that lead to safe equitable and inclusive environments for all the commitments to this goal are to create an inclusive learning environment
that supports the physical and mental health of students and staff develop policies and practices that provide equitable value diverse thinking and create opportunities to engage in respectful dialogue recruit and retain a diverse workforce that is prepared to meet the unique needs of each student and ensure inclusive practices in the decision-making process by involving appropriate stakeholders and our final goal is optimize resources acquire and prioritize resources to equitably advance pb schools vision mission values and strategic goal the commitments to this goal are develop transparent physically responsible district and site budgets in alignment with the district's strategic goals bless you seek community partnerships and funding opportunities strengthen strengthen recruitment and retention efforts to minimize staff vacancies and reduce time to hire prioritize resources to support the strategic plan providing safe learning environments close learning gaps and accelerate
academic achievement for every student and procure and optimize resources to support student development and ensure sustainable sustainability through public and private support our next step in the strategic planning process is where we will begin to operationalize these commitments this will involve gathering and analyzing data developing superintendent goals and district-wide initiatives developing implementation teams for district-wide initiatives and creating school and department success plans i would be happy to answer any questions at this time or hear your comments regarding the strategic goals and commitments mr laney so yeah i have a few um i have a few things that i would like to see possibly changed on it as far as goal number one in it you have the word interventions and as i read it and then read one point what was it 1.4 it almost
seems like we have a a bunch of kids that need to go to rehab um and this that's just the way i saw it and um and so is there a possibility just to remove the word interventions and leave the rest exactly the same that's my first suggestion there i just think it would be i just think it would read better i even asked my kid what they thought and they thought oh that's kind of weird so that's my first one on goal number and i have two more so goal number two 2.5 change that to read provide opportunities for staff to mean meaningfully collaborate with one another to be able to best serve our students needs so there's just a small addition to that and then on goal number four just a general thing
for that i don't have a specific but i would like to see wording added or a statement in there that gives direction to encourage more inter or across school collaboration to build the whole paradise valley community as a whole i didn't really see that or maybe maybe i just didn't see it in there but that's what i would like to see to help grow our district and much like the kids at student voice set at least in my group they wanted more inter-school participation so i'd really like that included in that and that's all that i have mrs case or did uh did anyone want to respond to mr laney regarding interventions the um definition of interventions like in school setting versus the traditional wait all the questions first let's take one at a time
go through it i think okay yeah because i think there's others that have the same question about that word keep going okay mrs case thank you when we had our study session um in number three educational environment um mrs bacon had them include the word families it it so many kids come from a variety of family situations and i think it said parents or something but it says families and i appreciate it saying families in there because that's what the strength of this district is so i appreciate that that was changed there and i have to say on gold to the staff experience and are these done in an order of importance they are not ranked in priority they are not ranked at all okay because to me on staff experience 2.5 the most important
thing is to provide opportunities for staff to to meaningfully collaborate with one another to me that's the most important thing there's so been so much research on it as teachers collaborate the educational success anyway i appreciate that that is included and it's just very important to me [Music] and then going in goal five ensure inclusive practices in the decision making process by involving appropriate stakeholders i still would like that expanded to make sure that we're having a variety of diverse opinions included there just for clarification did you say 5.5 um 5.5 yes and okay and expanded we can clarify that later or now mrs matura do you have a suggestion uh mrs case um i just want to make sure that all parents voices are heard so i i don't know something i want to
make sure that that happens in in the goals name the stakeholder groups sure okay mrs bacon do you have any questions comments yeah i think the um i'm wondering um with mr laney's question about interventions i wonder if we added academic interventions that whether that is a better reflection of what we're trying to say is making sure that every student because what that multi-tiered systems of support is kind of education ease that's not really something that the average person knows what that means so when we say multi-tiered systems of support we're talking about academic interventions that we're doing in the classroom so i just wonder if that would better clarify that specific one and then i wonder whether we should talk about the school to school collaboration because i think that's a good idea but
i wonder if that should be in the staff experience in goal 2 instead of the community because i i wonder if the community if we're talking about people outside our district um so that was just something else that i thought um the other thing that and it obviously could go both places i guess um the other thing i want to um just comment on is i want to make sure that and i appreciate mrs case talking about her definition of equity um and in in goal five my i if if every student who walks through our doors in kindergarten graduates in 12th grade then we have achieved everything that we should set out to do that's not the case so along the way we need to figure out what the barriers are to those students
achieving that goal so to me that's equity equity to me is i mean frankly just the whole institution of public schools um we you know our founding fathers did talk about education um the people who created this country knew that everyone needed an education and not everyone was getting an education at the beginning of time so that's something to think about the other thing is and i know i've talked about it i think everyone up here has talked about what we need to do to make every student successful i in my own family with my two children had very different experiences and very different needs to make them successful i know mr laney has talked about that i think all of us have talked about that at one time or another and those choices and
making sure that there aren't barriers to every student having those choices is what i think is most important in the work that we do as far as it relates to students and equity and making sure every student graduates from high school mrs greenberg um i had the exact same reaction to the word interventions um and so perhaps you know in 1.4 it makes sense defining it academically but maybe in the overall goal changing it to something like hold on i'm looking at the email i sent dr bales um something like engagement involvements that sort of thing so it's a broader term but provides that same sense of support for some reason i also reacted in 1.7 to the word agility um [Music] 1.7 i wrote down some notes but again i'm not exactly sure i
it just it it feels a little not jargony is not the word i want but it just i don't know it just it doesn't feel like it meshes in an academic sense to me so i'm not totally sure dexterity something like that i don't know if dexterity is a better word than agility for me but it's a very now word right it my husband said to me once if one more person on a on one of my calls says we need to be agile i'm going to scream i think we've proven we can be agile so i mean and i and i understand that i understand it's the same thing with resilience it's you know but i don't know resilience i have i think works agility i don't know i have more of a concern
on that one um in goal two in 2.2 um just a i love the in the in the whole goal i love that we talk about being a place to thrive i think that's spectacular i i to me that solidifies exactly what we should be in terms of a place for our staff a place for all everybody to to thrive along kind of along those lines i guess just a suggestion in 2.2 to add the word celebrate so it would be recruit hire retain and celebrate a high quality and diverse workforce because i do think that's something we do and i think we should declare that um in goal three um i sent dr bail some possible words just so we don't repeat verbs so perhaps in 3.4 rather than use the word create again
because we use it 3.5 maybe foster craft build establish something like that again just suggestions um goal 4 is the same thing just offered different words so we don't use offer and provide twice it's like i don't know present impart extend that sort of thing um [Music] goal five i just want to say i appreciate that it's here and um [Music] i think when we dig down as as i think mrs bacon was was discussing [Music] there's a lot to unpack when we talk about diversity there's a lot to unpack when we talk about equity and when we talk about inclusion and the point is to ensure that every student who walks in our doors graduates ultimately that should be the goal of every school district i know we have elementary districts but that should
be the goal for every district is that their students are successful and and they graduate um but every student is different and i appreciate that this goal reminds us of that and gives us something to work for to ensure that i know we haven't come to the portugal grad yet but that when we come to the portion of the grad that this supports every grant um and 6.1 i had a instead of in lined with just aligned with our district as opposed to the district that was just a quick little one so those were my thoughts mr laney i just had one more comment i talked with dr bells about this last week i think about the steam and um and i know a lot of parents were fearful that we were getting rid of
stem and i like how we're actually not getting rid of it we're expanding it and this includes you know all education aspects from you know the fine arts and actually anyway i just wanted to say i'm i'm grateful that it's including all of it mrs case hi you've you've sparked ideas and what i'm thinking so thank you um in the student experience well well let's see i like having academic intervention does that help you mr laney with that okay and then enhances students agility and resilience in a digital learning environment um i that could be wordsmithed better but um i like anne your celebrate and um and i agree with the thrive i think that's fabulous but um um when we're talking about the steam what was that is that on students go on okay
um i i one of my strong passions that i've had and one of my goals as a school board member is that we have more detailed teaching of i had a son who'd graduated in technology uh information technology i.t and works and i mean he can get into your computer and change it that kind of a deal and he works for a company anyway he um he never had a coding class until he went to college and that's just wrong we have to have more coding in this district we have to prepare our students better because so many jobs are opening up so we just need more coding classes from my perspective and perhaps in that student experience something along that i know it names science technology engineering arts and math but i think personally
i would like it to say something along along the lines of coding and that can be in offering clubs after school that can be all kinds of things offering coding to our students to me is very important um just gonna say i have a a granddaughter who's dating she's a senior and her boyfriend went to park city and he's been offering a job for 65 000 right now and graduates from high school because he is so good at coding he came from a district that had coding taught all the way through and if we don't do a better job we're missing the boat we used to be highest in in technology in the state and we just need to do better and i think it needs to be included included specifically in our goals um
let me see if i had anything on this other page no and i'm not sure where that would go oh i i know what it is okay on on goal five i think the word all needs to be included let's see if it is in in inclusive environments for all somehow it needs to be repeated down below because to me that's the the definition in this district it doesn't matter who you are you are included in the all that all students will achieve and and be successful so i just think the word all needs to be used again so that everyone understands our definition thank you did you have mr laney i was just going to say that as far as coding goes most people who are in the technology sector and know that that's
just part of technology so um maybe it could be included maybe not but i would see it as being included in there coming from a tech background so just want to say that yeah it seems also like kind of a oh i'm sorry um it seems like a specific goal these are more objectives that that seems like that's a dig down like a little bit deeper um goal that we could have within that yeah president mature uh mr laney mrs case and uh i think that when we operationalize this plan and i do believe that there will be uh there's great potential to have an implementation team and an implementation plan for steam as an issue district-wide initiative i do think that in that plan we can call out strategies such as offering coding at
certain grade levels grade bands or things like that when we get to developing that implementation plan i just wanted to start the discussion and and the planting the seed early so planted okay um i have a few comments and uh suggestions as well of course um so one of my overall comments for um i appreciate all of this there's so much work in here so thank you thank you to everyone who uh worked on all of this process um i personally i mrs case brought up the word all and wanting the word all included and i wanted to kind of tweak it a little differently because our vision is every learner empowered and i know that was a very specific reason it wasn't all learners it wasn't each learner it was like very specifically decided
to use the word every every learner and so i personally would like to see that concept of every learner carried throughout this next step as opposed to sometimes it's all sometimes it's each sometimes it's i just feel like if we throughout where we can where it makes sense and just say instead of saying offer students an opportunity for specials and that sort of thing to offer every student because if that's our goal if our mission really is to offer things to every student then i i would like to call that out um so i would like the word every carried through um the document just to kind of continue that so that's my that's my overall comment there um and then uh for let me see for goal number six i know these are not
in order ranked order of any case so i'm not i'm not um trying to i had a suggestion for moving something around but not because of rank order just because i felt like a couple of things went together and yet we're far apart um for instance there is uh 6.2 is seek community partnerships and funding opportunities and then 6.5 is to procure and optimize resources ensure sustainability through public and private support which sounded like that was kind of a similar thing like looking for partnerships and funding and then public and private support so i just felt like those being next to each other might kind of make that flow a little better um and i felt that number four and 6.4 and 6.1 kind of went together so uh that was that was something that
i had had noticed there um let me see the for goal number 1.7 we talked about this a few times but i just want to make sure that people are aware um that the goal here because we talked about enhanced students agility and resilience in a digital learning environment that we're we're not trying to be pushing everyone back on computers all the time that we're not saying that that's the direction we're going i just wanted to make sure that we're clarifying that and not necessarily in this wording but just just in general that parents know that that's not the goal is to move back everything online or anything like that but just knowing that in the future in college and career there is so much technology and that we want to make sure our students
are prepared for that um let me see and do you have uh examples on like 2.3 i have just wondering uh making sure we're providing staff with comprehensive wellness programs and do you have examples of something that that might be uh yeah we currently have for example a program through our insurance plan that allows incentivizes you know healthy habits um where students where employees can submit uh wellness checks and verification of certain uh screenings throughout the year that earns them points towards certain prizes and and the idea behind that obviously is that uh when our health our employees are healthy uh it it makes it better for students they're they're teachers are in the classroom parapro's are in the classroom uh we're also not then trying to shuffle around substitutes as we've been doing quite
a bit this year um and also being self-insured that also helps protect us as an organization when we have healthier employees so that would be one example of of a program we currently have that we can continue to to uh you know look at it and grow thank you um i think that's uh i think that's all i have for for now anyway okay let me see if i can have some reflections and uh and foster this conversation a little further so in goal number one we'll go through each goal um what i heard was some recommendations in the goal regarding the word intervention and a suggestion was made to maybe change that word interventions in goal 1 to engagements as a possible uh substitution um or i think using um academic intervention no no
oh that's in a different place go to goal one goal one says provide students with supportive learning environments that include rich academic and extracurricular experiences comma interventions comma the suggestion was made that that intervention was changed to potentially a different word like engagements and then it would read experiences engagements and programs to prepare them for a successful future i think we i thought we were keeping interventions adding no we wanted to change i think it's talking about the bullet point so if you go to 1.4 when we get there that was the place that we talked about adding the word academic but there was also a suggestion for a revis revision to the word intervention in the actual gall so i i don't know if that is something that the board majority i haven't heard
from everybody on this particular topic and you know another possible word might be something like involvement involvement yeah um having tutored a lot of children for a lot of years i like in engagement i mean i mean intervention but say academic intervention even in both places right just just having tutored so many children for so many years that intervention is vital so i like that included because anyway academic and intervention up there just adding the word academic academic already appears in the goal yeah academic is is already in the goal there as i read include rich academic and extracurricular experiences comma interventions and programs so here's a question for you when we're giving you this feedback yes then you're taking it back to the committee no uh not likely this is a lot of work
no please no at the end we're all right there and so we are taking your feedback tonight and cabinet will make those revisions uh if we sense that that's that's the board's directions the um this is not a not a policy these would become regulations that you know would guide our work as administration and staff together it'll foster the development of the superintendent goals and such so um you know minor word changes like this uh isn't going to probably change the intent of the commitment now will we will this come back to us for approval we'll send it back to you no we i wasn't planning to but i'm happy to i mean i mean i don't i i just didn't want to present the revisions to you okay as a regulation well then i
would suggest you take it back to cabinet and you guys wordsmith and let us see what you came up with okay that's that's fine um moving along into goal uh 1.2 the the commitment engage students in multiple disciplinary scheme parentheses science technology engineering arts and mathematics learning experiences uh once again i think cabinet can foster that conversation a little bit more but we would tend to not specifically call coding here it would be in an implementation plan later uh you we did hear uh of the potential of kind of carrying every learner throughout the document too i i think i'm happy to have cabinet review that and look on where we might do that but that's um you know without a specific suggestion i'm just going to offer the suggestion that we look through the
document and try to find some ways to do that definitely in 1.4 i heard and saw a lot of head nodding of adding academic uh there to describe the intervention um 1.7 uh agility not that i didn't really sense you know an alternative to that word but how about capacity to adapt okay adaptability i don't know it just seems agility is very in three years it's going to be dated i feel like okay flexibility readiness another possibility possibly readiness okay all right in goal number two i'm specifically looking at uh 2.2 and i heard potentially a recommendation to add and celebrate to that i saw a lot of head nodding there and in 2.5 um i think i heard uh you know the recommendation to potentially add to this sentence provide opportunities for staff to
meaningfully collaborate with one another to best serve our student needs to best serve our student needs or to best serve every learner okay all right nancy likes that that's what happens when you have teachers collaborate every learner they learn how to do that all right i am moving on to goal number three specifically looking at 3.4 just to kind of mix it up maybe 3.4 would start with the word foster and maintain welcoming campuses and facility facilities district-wide that are safe and appealing okay so what do we mean by create do we mean physical building do we mean the physical structure we mean what's inside or do we mean both it's it's going to be both all right i think from a very uh initial design phase to new facilities to redesign existing spaces the
aesthetics and we've worked real hard even just in the last year to add uh to our existing campuses an aesthetic appeal it's warm and welcoming but it also includes the you know the customer service reception so it's both so i guess foster could be build right like i'm just trying to think does that i mean build was another suggestion i had another was craft another was established so i think it's kind of dependent on the mood that we want set by the word [Music] yeah have fun with that whoa all right we have a few suggestions to dr jarrus with that one i guess we'll put it in a hat and draw um all right they're all in the email uh moving on the goal number four uh 4.2 specifically i i once again an
offer was suggested as an alternative mrs greenberg i didn't capture a lot of the alternatives did you have some others i had present impart extend possibilities any of those grab anybody's attention all right we'll we'll figure one of those out and then um somewhere in here i heard uh mr laney mention about more inter or across school experiences i think that you know if i look back to the student experience right back under goal number one maybe we can find a way dr jarros to embed that idea that that students might have we do have many partnerships we have a lot of ptos that partner with other schools we have we've had virtual buddies uh you know at different times so there may be opportunities and i think that's what you're getting at is having
kids have an experience with other students or be familiar with what's going on in other schools is that the gist of it mr laney yeah i'm thinking both but yeah definitely the students and and i think a sense of overall that we are a district we are a united district um and just ways that we can just as opposed to school to school and i think we've done a good job of of having interactions that way but showing that as a deliberate part of our district the the other thing that brought this on and i know this meeting is getting along but the other thing that brought this on was my visiting of all the schools and there's a big disparity between our schools and so that's why um i want to do this or
i want that in there sure thank you i mean it actually might also fit in under 4.4 when you look at provide collaborative opportunities and diverse educational programs for families i think that can be expanded um to sort of bring in school communities as well perhaps okay does that work yeah i i think an example of that is at student voice when the one student who came from an affluent school spoke to the other student who didn't have any way to pay for graduation gowns and you could just see it clicking in her head more experiences in between schools of wealth and not wealth to interact and to community projects and service and those kind of things i i it gives them a lifetime of understanding and appreciation for other cultures exactly and even our
festival sports is a is a good example of where we have our schools uh you know visiting each other's campuses and interacting with each other through our sports programs in the middle school but by one campus serving another campus it changes your perspective on life in in an academic setting in certainly sports but not just on the some that's a great equalizer in and of itself sports are but just to say oh they don't have money to pay the fees to become a national honor society so what can we do can we do a car wash to help them become a member because they can afford it whatever i mean that's just an example just so they can interact thank you all right moving down to goal number five specifically 5.5 i heard the suggestion
to kind of expand this one or at least maybe define stakeholders differently and so potentially this could be ensure inclusive practices in the decision making process by involving appropriate students staff parents and family voice 5.5 and then defining stakeholders as student staff parent and family voice yeah you had made a suggestion mrs case about all parent voices heard right so so you're saying by including so say it would read mrs case ensure inclusive practices in the decision making process by involving all by by involving appropriate student staff parent and family voice i i like it defined better than not thank you i don't like appropriate because that's a that's a yeah that's i don't know like who's appropriate so let's just say by involving parents i think the word appropriate was provided because not all
decision making processes impact all stakeholders so then say not appropriate decision making appropriate decision ensure inclusive practices in the decision making process as appropriate by involving blah blah blah but appropriate sounds like there are these people are good to do and these people are not good and that is not what we want okay let's work on that one or you can do as is appropriate at the end you know by naming everybody right right is another word sorry invested go ahead tested do we want to add community in 5.5 perhaps and then just maybe a little grammatical revision to 6.1 and then moving on to uh the suggestions of maybe aligning even though they're not ranked but aligning uh six two and six five near each other and six one and six four we certainly
do that that doesn't change any uh content i think based on uh the conversations uh the the number of revisions that cabinet will follow up on i'll probably put it back on as a discussion item just so you can see the final uh revision and i'll send it to you certainly a week in advance but sound like a good plan okay sounds good thank you all right moving on dr jairus drumroll shall i provide part two part two uh we also are here tonight to share with you an initial visual presentation of our portrait of a graduate uh through the development of our vision mission and values we have identified characteristics that we want our students to possess when they leave our schools these include being a critical and creative thinker to be collaborative and
community-minded and ethical and resilient and again we are also open to any thoughts you might have on this visual representation or any of the comment content so just as a reminder this was a conversation at our december study session you provided some feedback and we did make some revisions based on that feedback i believe particularly under community minded we called out community service and we also included in the very top title pb schools graduate is prepared for career college and community involvement that exhibits the following characteristics so those were a couple revisions that i recalled dr jarrus were there any others from december that i'm missing in terms of content otherwise there's there's a couple things that we would certainly like uh in your discussion and feedback you know certainly your impressions on the visual
representation we see this uh as part of a several different ways to share with the community we believe that this will be a page in our family student handbook we believe this is a one-pager that we can use both digitally and in print to hand out when we talk with parents groups and such whether that be school-wide school-level tours district-level information and then part of a greater strategic planning document that we'll put together and include in the in the website and imprint and then the second part you know after you give me some feedback on the visual uh uh i know that the marketing and communications team is uh certainly interested in your feedback there if there's any other revisions or conversations around the content we're welcome to listen to those ideas as well mrs
case just from the earlier discussion we have i like the word compassionate and i'm looking at all this and i can't figure out how to put it in but i think especially nowadays we need people who are compassionate as i gave that example at student voice to me they gain compassion and understanding so i don't know i don't know i don't know how that would fit in or if it can fit in oh that is actually on there under collaborative the third bullet point is demonstrates care and compassion oh there it is i didn't read all that i don't know it's just kind of at the end though i just like it to be highlighted i don't know if it's possible mrs greenberg um in the uh intro line the pv schools graduate um i
would suggest i'd like to suggest we change the word exhibits because i feel that sort of layers on it's just you know it's sort of a shell to something more like embodies or personifies or exemplifies or something that is more intrinsic to the individual so and [Music] then to repeat what i said before perhaps not agility under result i'm sorry go ahead again we have the word agility under resilience so readiness deafness something it probably works better here i think than in the goals but um it still could get dated pretty quickly and since you're asking about the whole thing the graphic um it's growing on me a little bit but i still not sure about it just doesn't do it for me maybe put a pair of chucks on the feet i'm just kidding
i mean i'm either thinking i mean i i absolutely totally get it but i'm kind of thinking perhaps the graduation gown should go all the way down to the shoes or or no graduation count i don't know it just again i get it and if we use it we use it it just hasn't grown on me to the extent i wish it can have we asked student voice about this uh we did share this with them today and they did not have any suggestions but it was a very small group we had a lot of absences so we actually are going to be bringing the student body presidents as well as their the future student body president because the law have completed their elections we're going to bring them to the uh student voice in
may right today was the today was so it wasn't student voice that saw today it was a student body presidents that saw it and we we only had a 50 attendance rate so we're going to bring the student body presidents as well as their new student body presidents to the student voice in may so we certainly can you know solicit some feedback from them but the one the students that were there today um they they didn't have any feedback on the actual infographic but the wording and everything could they be given it ahead of time and say this is a draft what's your input what do you think we've actually used this before with the student voice earlier is that i think if i recall mr long you're not in your head as well i'd
have to go back and look at our agenda but i think we've shared it i i it's they have so many good ideas they do as we have found out i'm just saying what do they think because they can understand what a student thinks better than we can i promise our student body presidents today were very complementary of this and we had a good discussion with them about how this might be measured and potentially could they be you know a self-reflection they had a great suggestion that maybe this is used as part of uh on um freshman orientation camp and that there's a check box and that maybe the freshmen as they enter can kind of uh you know pick some of the things they think they're strong at and weak at but they have
an idea of where they want to go over the next four years so we thought that was good feedback too that's cool to build on that i think we should create something for elementary and middle as well if we're if the goal is every kindergartener walks in and graduates in 12th grade this is this is a portrait that starts then not in ninth grade well we certainly know absolutely um this is uh greenberg that you know students in developing resiliency can reflect on where they're at and uh they can kind of chart their own growth too any comments from anyone i do like i do like the graphic um i thought it struck me i i thought it was very uh i liked the visual i thought it was made it easy to the way
it was broken down and with the graduate in the middle so i did like the i think oh i think the gown does need to be longer what i just said to mrs matures is the layout is fine i have no problem with the layout it's just the red i did notice uh that the um the shadowing the the ombre coloring is something i think that's in our in our new website and and that sort of thing and so i did i did notice that that um that carryover from the website the new website design and also in here uh in that color change mr droby would you like to add some thoughts here yes color is obviously very important to my department you'll see the gradients throughout future projects to modernize our branding mrs
case did you have oh sorry all right well president mature at giving board members um might my take away is i think cabinet will certainly go back and take a look at the word exhibits in the title sentence possibly the word agility i a little confused about you know whether or not there's a huge interest in changing the infographic i didn't sense that um so we'll probably run with it uh mr drogy and uh and we will be happy to share the the update when we bring back for discussion revisions to the commitments as well that's all we have tonight okay before we adjourn i would like to remind you that the next regular board meeting will be held on thursday april 21st 2022 at 7 pm may i have a motion to adjourn so
moved all those in favor say aye aye any opposed motion passes unanimously meeting adjourned
