scoop it down here david drogan here here jankowitz here ledotti here panichi here zimmerman paul president thank you receiving of the minutes can we please have a motion to accept the minutes from august 30th 2021. second i only heard it motion made by mr haberther second by mr viner all in favor of those receiving minutes please say aye aye thank you uh reading and accepting of monthly correspondence mr ganello do we have any this evening uh none from our last mate since our last meeting okay perfect thank you so much okay now we'll have mr arlington superintendents reports and presentation please hi everyone uh tonight i'd like to share details of this year's district and school goals uh throughout the presentation i've sprinkled in some pictures of our teacher clapping at the start of the
year along with some other beginning of year picks my intention is always to create over communicate and reinforce clarity our goals help us to do that they help us to all keep growing in the same direction and help to make explicit what's important that we value with those are within those intentions of a set of purposes for our goals by being intentional we align our efforts to big ideas and zoom in on priorities our goals help us to keep accountable and make transparent how collaboration will help accelerate student achievement and so i start here with an overview of district goals these are our current goals and they've guided us for the last few years our aims have been around enhancing intervention services supporting future ready teaching and learning strengthening communication district operation efficiency and effectiveness
and professional learning so our district goals are the circles in blue heart and goals are in gold and breely goals are in the blue boxes to keep us moving forward in timely and innovative ways i'm proposing we refresh some of those goals those goals that we're still aspiring to actualize will keep and continue to operationalize others that i feel we've satisfactorily shown growth in will retire i will keep those soon to be former goals priorities of course but we'll sunset them in order to make front-facing other big work we need to engage in so here's what i'd like to propose uh continuing to focus on future ready teaching learning and innovation along with continued focus on increasing opportunities for meaningful professional learning at the same time i'm suggesting we double down on work we have
in motion by formalizing our commitment to the following better using data to drive student achievement nurturing diversity equity and inclusion and building an educational case for support for a september 2022 bond referendum so what i've done here is taken the three goals i'm suggesting we sunset and provide just a sampling of achievement towards our fulfillment of them again these goals remain important areas and we'll continue to keep them at the forefront of our work but we've made considerable strides towards their progress so to start in the areas of intervention services we continue to revamp and nuance our multi-tiered system of supports through better intervention protocols and data monitoring and more clearly defined personnel structures for mtss i think we've really addressed uh strengthening communication in our district in the past couple of years through increased
updates from me and the principals we've offered a robust cache of parent trainings and we also try out some new communication efforts like videos and blogs and town halls the fourth goal i'm not suggesting we sunset so much as think differently about um i'd like for us to kind of use goal four as an overlaying goal because every single district move that we make supports our quest to operate a safe efficient and effective school district prior to creating detailed action plans i've generalized with the big work inherent in the goals will be so these action steps serve to help unpack each of these goals the first one is a big one i'm suggesting we build an instructional environment that relies on values and uses student performance data to drive teaching and learning and improve our
students academic achievement as an institution i've learned while we've always kind of looked at data we've yet to really build a strong data culture by formalizing professional learning around data frameworks data protocols and even creating a space for teachers to rely on and explore student performance data as i've reported previously over the summer and continuing throughout the year the admin team and i are getting outside support and learning how to coach and facilitate the teachers use of instructional data the work of diversity equity and inclusion matters also and this helps to reinforce those ideas so as part of this work we'll look to continue efforts of a district-wide equity committee we began last year we'll continue to examine state mandates around dei in order to fill uh curricular gaps and then we'll also look to
crosswalk our school climate work with diversity equity and inclusion efforts what i personally hope will come from this is a kind of burgeoning common language so for example equity doesn't mean everyone gets the same thing it means everyone gets what they need and for some that's a mindset shift then finally around a prospective referendum this goal makes explicit our work of selecting projects building a case for support at the community level and then communicating out timelines facts and important information and as you obviously know the likelihood of passing a bond referendum often relies on a get out and vote campaign along with making sure that we're communicating facts in timely and compelling ways and also thinking upstream by proactively disabusing community members who may have misinformation or faulty perceptions which around referendum times sometimes increase
we'll look to do that through the framework that this goal establishes so i'm going to segue here from our district goals to our school goals the school goals scale out some of the work i just shared so these were harding's goals last year to work to create a framework for sel to advance tech tools and to boost communication with harding school community members and so there's lots of good news to celebrate we've really more widely embraced the use of second step our sel curriculum and also offered really robust differentiated counseling counseling groups last year as it relates to tech tools there's been widespread adoption of google classroom and really greater reliance on tech to transform and encourage uh teaching and learning and we've we've received a lot of positive feedback about principal bumowski's communication through
his weekly updates along with parent nights and support opportunities so some of these goals harding will continue so should we we should think of continuing to create a framework for developing sel skills as two as a two or more year goal parting will embark upon some vision and value work and then in direct alignment to one of our district goals third goal for harding is to use data to propel achievement here's what action plans for these goals may look like when we unpack them so expanding our use of second step to create like monthly themes along with additional differentiated counseling groups the purpose and vision work asks staff to engage and explore beliefs and core values and then also create and refresh vision and missions you'll see a common trend here right there's this triangulated
focus between the district harding and burley on the use of student assessment data to drive teaching and learning so we're thinking of this as this really big omnipresent goal and so the action plans look similar across those three pla those three spaces uh like harding goals burley's goals also puzzle into our district goals as complements of each other last year ab really focused on implementing anti-bullying scl and school spirit efforts um increased support for college-bound students via the counseling department uh where they also focused on boosting communication and then provided a space in place to discuss and adopt more engaging and relevant future-ready coursework and some of the achievements are are listed here so our entire school climate team received professional learning last year and restorative practices which directly supports our sel and school spirit
work i've mentioned many times the different sel type check-ins we have which again i think are really stellar we'll continue and expand those there's a great deal of focus and thinking differently about how to support college-bound students i wrote to you in the summer and also shared some of the the camp college work that we did we've also worked to boost communication with really school community members so in my friday updates to you i try to include mr davey's updates as well so you get a flavor of what that communication sounds like he's also attended all pto meetings which was identified as an area of growth for us um and these last three bullets you're also duly aware of which are some of the efforts we've made to provide for more engaging and relevant courses
at brewley and as you'll see we're continuing down that same trajectory for this year too so we will look to continue to implement programs focused on anti-bullying support for college-bound students continue to provide engaging and relevant ready courses and use assessment data wisely here's how we hope to do this so we hope to like problematize what we started last year and really build upon it so currently brilly is working for a no place for hate anti-defamation league designation they're looking really to yoke together um opportunities for inclusivity with uh spirit and culture building and then we differentiated the middle school code of conduct this year realizing discipline and correlating infractions for a seventh grader probably should look different than they do for a 12th grader so as part of that the middle school will more
overtly implement restorative practices there's a college essay writing day that's being planned for an additional college support as part of our efforts to increase like scaffolds for college-bound seniors through many different avenues we're already beginning to think about courses for next year so for 22 and 23 so we're beginning to build those now we're working to develop a sports marketing program of course along with some more uh non-traditional stem type coursework such as music technology or sound engineering and then as i mentioned earlier burley 2 will be looking at student assessment data to drive achievement i want to share quickly some some next steps for us so you'll see here some of the tried and true moves that i've traditionally made to communicate district goal work and something i want to try maybe a little
differently so we'll continue to widely communicate our goals because the more people who know what they are and believe in them the more agency people will have over the work and the greater the likelihood that our students will benefit from them but then i also want to look at this idea that i've been kind of ruminating on which is to create district goal work groups made up of varied stakeholders so teachers parents admin so that there's greater agency and ownership of the goals by like the different stakeholders so the purpose of that those groups would be for the group members to look at the goals look at the action plans provide feedback actually hold up the progress to metrics to see how we're achieving and what type of turns we may need to make um
and that's another kind of thing i'm thinking about this year as it relates to like enriching enriching our uh district goal thinking i will be sure to send this presentation out in our friday folder and some other different forms of communication but i'm also happy to take questions now um measurements or a barometer on you have like certain dates you're gonna be uh giving kind of like an update to the board or making sure we're kind of achieving these goals or getting close to them or yeah sure so yeah and kind of going back into my notes in preparation for this presentation uh last january i presented a mid-year update this is what bruno said would happen i made your update and then also at the end of the year but i could also think
differently if there's a greater desire for more frequent updates i'm just making not so much to the board but for yourself i mean to make sure you're on target and your staff's on target the administration's on target on a monthly basis or a quarterly basis or something to make sure you don't want to find out in february that we're way off right so yeah so these are um super high level the next step would be to create these action plans right exactly okay and part of that is like assigning a person responsible for the action step for that like accountability link but thank you valid point yeah potential courses like new courses yeah um i'm not sure how we've done it in the past uh sometimes it comes in multiple ways right like sometimes a
teacher or a lead teacher may say there's a need sometimes kids come to faculty members and say like we really want to try this but we're also trying to look at what other districts are doing too to keep us competitive so like sports marketing is a kind of a course that lots of school districts are offering that we haven't but we want to make sure that the kids voices are are heard in the process and that's really represented in like the redesigned english four courses so teachers work together to provide some some options for kids but then ultimately the kids kind of voted on the courses that they wanted um knowing that no matter what they voted on they would have access to the standards that they need um so it's kind of like a
multi-step process for that um the sound engineering class that you're talking about do we have the equipment for that kind of stuff or is that something we'd have to yeah that would be like a sound like the sound board of the kind of traditional yeah that would be what vince calls a program improvements plan yeah okay there would be a budgetary number today is anthony's brother going to teach it anthony no he does doesn't he help with the plays right no my brother dies yeah yeah yeah yeah i'm sitting with your brother teaching the class teaching the class he's talking about joe he's probably good yeah any other questions about the presentation uh just before we move on to report of committees a few notes um as i mentioned in my update and i know
mr laddy will mention also i'm temporarily scratching number nine from the agenda uh simply because i'd like additional time to make a thoughtful decision about adjusting the school calendar to make up for the lost professional day for teachers due to hurricane ida i'll have a recommendation to adjust the school calendar at a future meeting with enough time for families and employees to plan as it relates to the tap committee i have it slated for discussion with the president and vice president of the teachers association when we meet next week i'm hopeful that there'll be a more robust teacher response than there was last year and then the association put out their all-call for volunteers shortly i also remain optimistic that an agreeable time is found to be convenient for the majority of the committee members
and i'll continue to provide updates and as i sort of transition your attention to the enrollment report i'd like to thank the guidance counselors our support staff and mrs dukkovitz our registrar for accommodating lots of end of summer registrants uh since august 23rd i thought it'd be interesting for you to know um since august 23rd to today we had 30 students withdrawal from our district and 59 new students enroll in these last two or three weeks so the delta is an increase of 29 students with several others whose registration is in the queue and pending i'm working on an aggregate of class size data and i'll have that for you on friday the last piece i have is in your packet you have the hib report for august for august we have no reported cases
of hiv later in the meeting under the cni section you'll be voting on the july hiv data and for july we also had no reported cases questions you know it's always been since i've been on the board it's always concerning or maybe it's surprising that so many kids come into the into the school district right at the beginning of school um do we are we doing like the proper residency checks on making sure everybody's legitimately in town and stuff okay we are but we also know that there are some other ideas we want to explore for for vetting residency and and i i'm sure many of you know this kennel worth is not the anomaly in having a rush of registrants in august it happens a lot in districts and no matter how much we
advertise for kindergarten registration in in february and march it just happens at people sure we're doing our due diligence on that and also to you know each kid cost money right so for losing programs whether it's middle school soccer at one point several years ago for ten twelve thousand dollars you know gotta make sure we're doing our due diligence on that yeah and i would just add kind of um close the loop a little bit on that that mr gannels in the past couple weeks alone brought to my attention a couple um cases that we're looking into regarding residency um fact checking leases and things like that so um okay great and his team are definitely on top of it thanks yeah people sorry i think this is very cool thank you report of committees
review of resolutions and board discussion first up finance facilities and negotiations okay thank you thank you um all right mr um start with my report uh mr general had covered much of the project uh project updates and the august 30th meeting i apologize for not being here for that meeting um since then the projects of the remaining projects are progressing nicely the buildings are open to the student and thanks to the help of the maintenance and custodial staff staff a lot of the furniture was shifted around to accommodate the required social distancing and modifications to uh in the remodifications to the cafeteria as you know lunch is being served on the harding and barely auxiliary gyms now um the harding's straight stage i'm sorry in the burley auxiliary gym the committee over the next few
months will be zeroing in on the scope of the 2022 proposed referendum we already had one meeting well we did actually discuss a potential referendum several months ago but we did meet in august and reviewed and discussed some key elements of this potential referendum and we also reviewed the current project work the administration is in process of interviewing candidates for the supervisor of buildings and grounds vacancy and plans on presenting a candidate for that position um would be probably on the october 12th meeting vince yes right yeah so um let's see continue with the resolutions i reviewed all the financial resolutions they're all in order there was no outliers on either of the or all of the four or five um financial resolutions superintendent or like to mention resolution nine has been removed um and
the rest are pretty clear-cut for the financial resolutions i don't think this needs much of an explanation but we will take questions um after i finish this and finally i just want to mention if it's okay michelle or yeah president um negotiation on as far negotiations on negotiations are continuing and we are making progress and that's my report any questions for mr ladati thank you mr alidadi next up personnel management mr hayweather thank you very much um 10 resolutions tonight 10 11 rescind offers of employment to teachers sorry a teacher a custodial maintenance and a special ed classroom aid resolution 12 approves the teachers for before and after care resolution 13 approves am lunch a.m lunchroom aids and paraprofessional aids resolution 14 approves the payment of unused vacation days resolution 15 approves student teachers resolution
approved certified stipend schedules resolution 17 approves additional teaching sections for the 21-22 school year resolution 18 approves paraprofessional staff resolution 19 approves home instruction and that's it that's the last one any questions these are not to work we don't need them anymore what is the usual reason for that yeah so regarding um resolution 11 um we decided to rescind the offer on our end um mostly because of interactions um and i would leave it at that ten i don't know ten was because the person didn't want to complete some of the paperwork and requirements associated with employment in public schools at this time so then they would be replaced yes okay thank you okay thank you mr haymathor next up curriculum instruction mr jenkins great thank you uh two resolutions first one number 20
